  1. Well, good morning, beloved. It's very good to see you here today with us.

  2. ! And I'm so thankful to see so many guests on this special Easter morning.

  3. ! Certainly, our Savior is risen, and not just on this day, but He has been for quite some time.

  4. And our freedom, our life, and our joy is bought by His person and by His work.

  5. So, I'm glad to be back today. Last week, I was traveling with Daniel Gentry, a member of our church, to the country of Nicaragua.

  6. We decided to undertake a cross-country drive, which we were able to find almost no information about.

  7. We even, in Managua, at the airport, were asking the car rental folks,

  8. is there a road that gets where we're going? And they had never heard of where we were going.

  9. We trusted with a little bit of information that, by God's providence, He would get us there.

  10. And the very beginning of Hebrews, chapter 1, verse 3, says that Jesus upholds the universe by the word of His power.

    Hebrews 1:3

  11. And that's true in all circumstances, all the time.

  12. It's more evidenced in some circumstances, like Daniel Gentry and I driving across Nicaragua, speaking no Spanish at all.

  13. But as we were singing, Wes, I'm glad he did the Spanish version of that song.

  14. There's a good chance that I spoke in tongues down there, because people seemed to understand what I was saying

  15. in my very southern English, and we managed to get across the country and back safely.

  16. And I'll share later some more of what happened during that time.

  17. But today, I want you to turn with me to the book of Romans, chapter 15.

    Romans 15 chapter mention

  18. We've been working our way, verse by verse, through the book of Romans.

  19. We're coming to a close, I think another maybe six weeks to eight, and we will finish out the book together.

  20. And we have come together today to chapter 15, verse 4.

  21. And we're going to look today together at verse 4 through verse 7.

  22. For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction,

  23. that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.

  24. May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another,

  25. in accord with Christ Jesus, that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  26. Therefore, welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you for the glory of God.

  27. Let's pray together.

  28. Father God, I pray this morning by the power of your Spirit that you will speak to us by your Word.

  29. We recognize this morning, Lord, that our preaching is in vain if Christ is not risen,

  30. and we praise you for that reality.

  31. That he is seated at your right hand even now, interceding for us,

  32. that our prayers would be heard by you because we're clothed in his righteousness.

  33. So we come to you humbly, asking that you work amongst us,

  34. recognizing that we are your people, and you want good things for us from your Word.

  35. We pray this in Christ's name. Amen.

  36. So some of you, I know, may already be wondering why we're in Romans chapter 15,

    Romans 15 chapter mention

  37. looking at verse 4 through 7.

  38. And I will say to you, that's because that's where we are in the Scriptures.

  39. Many today are going to pause from whatever their preaching schedule is to preach a special Easter sermon.

  40. And I say to you that every sermon is an Easter sermon.

  41. Because every sermon contains within it the beauties, the glories of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

  42. And that includes his resurrection.

  43. So we'll certainly talk about that this morning.

  44. We're going to talk about that in the light of these truths that Paul's been trying to show us,

  45. the workings out of the Gospel,

  46. which he's presented in the first 11 chapters of this book.

  47. But before we go any further, I want to take a pause from Romans chapter 15

    Romans 15 chapter mention

  48. to address quickly a social issue going on in our country right now.

  49. It's going to be very, very brief, and then we're going to move on.

  50. Currently, right now, the Supreme Court is debating DOMA, the Defense of Marriage Act.

  51. And we may see that repealed in our country.

  52. Gay marriage may become a reality very soon in our country.

  53. And I just want to say two things to you, if this comes about.

  54. Firstly, the federal government legalizing homosexual marriage

  55. in no way affects the sanctity of your marriage.

  56. Look to your personal holiness.

  57. Husbands, lead your wives.

  58. Pastor, provide and protect for her.

  59. Wives, submit to your husbands just as the church submits to Christ.

  60. Raise your kids well.

  61. Be a living example of what healthy marriage should look like in this world.

  62. It's meant to be a picture of Christ and the relationship with his church.

  63. Just continue to do that.

  64. It doesn't destroy your marriage.

  65. If you think it does, come see me.

  66. We've got a lot to talk about.

  67. Secondly, our primary goal as Christians is not to prevent gay marriage.

  68. Our primary goal as Christians is not to prevent gay marriage.

  69. It's the redemption of souls.

  70. So stay calm and carry on.

  71. Continue to propagate the gospel.

  72. Continue to speak to people's hearts.

  73. Because people really don't change until their hearts change.

  74. And so let's keep soldiering on together.

  75. Expect that this world is going to get worse.

  76. It's going to happen all around us.

  77. Not just this issue.

  78. This is one amongst many ways that our culture is rejecting almighty God and his standard for us.

  79. So keep calm.

  80. Carry on.

  81. Continue to present the gospel in every possible way.

  82. Close that.

  83. Back to Romans chapter 15.

    Romans 15 chapter mention

  84. I want to bring to you four observations from the text this morning.

  85. And if you'll allow, I'm actually going to begin with verse 7.

  86. So we're going to begin with verse 7 and then we'll jump back up to verse 4.

  87. Because we're going to start with the first observation, which is that we have been welcomed by Christ.

  88. And therefore he is our example for what Paul is trying to say to us here in this text.

  89. That we ought to welcome one another.

  90. Chapter 14 has been all about the fact that there are these non-clear issues in our Christian faith.

  91. These things that are now permissible to us as Christians, but may or may not be beneficial.

  92. Gray areas, so to speak.

  93. I've said to you previously that they're non-issues that we tend to make into issues.

  94. And they develop and they form into legalism.

  95. And we tend to bash each other and beat each other up over these non-primary things.

  96. So let's not make issues out of non-issues.

  97. Let's continue to persevere and press on in the truth of the gospel with one another.

  98. And Christ here is set up as our supreme example for that.

  99. And I think it's so fitting that as he's coming to the close of his exhortations to us,

  100. the way that we're supposed to work the gospel out,

  101. that he ends it with Christ just as he began it with Christ.

  102. So you remember back in chapter 12, verse 1, he says,

  103. Brethren, by the mercies of God, I appeal to you by the mercies of God to present your bodies as a living sacrifice.

  104. And now he's working out what this life sacrifice to God looks like.

  105. So you would say, but wait, is that really starting with Christ?

  106. And I would say to you, yes, in the first 11 chapters.

  107. That's where he began with these doctrines of the gospel,

  108. that we are saved by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone forever.

  109. That that is the way in which we stand right before God,

  110. not by any work that we can do on our own,

  111. not by any pressing of our own,

  112. but by his great work on our behalf.

  113. So he begins it with Christ and he ends it here in verse 7 with Christ once again.

  114. So therefore, welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you.

  115. It is Easter Sunday, is it not?

  116. I'd be remiss if we didn't read an Easter Sunday text.

  117. Luke chapter 24, verse 1 through 7.

    Luke 24:1–7

  118. I invite you to turn there with me.

  119. Chapter 24, verse 1, the book of Luke, the gospel of Luke.

  120. But on the first day of the week, at early dawn,

  121. they went to the tomb, taking the spices they had prepared.

  122. And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb.

  123. But when they went in, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.

  124. While they were perplexed about this,

  125. behold, two men stood by them in dazzling apparel.

  126. And as they were frightened and bowed their face to the ground,

  127. the men said to them,

  128. Why do you seek the living among the dead?

  129. He is not here, but has risen.

  130. Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee,

  131. that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men

  132. and be crucified, and on the third day, rise.

  133. So as we saw in the story,

  134. the presentation from the Jesus Storybook Bible,

  135. and I wish I had an English accent,

  136. because I think you would hear it better if I did, right?

  137. We had this dark grieving,

  138. this darkness that stood over the Christians,

  139. those who had devoted their lives to Christ,

  140. who were following him,

  141. thinking that he had come to conquer

  142. in a different way than he did.

  143. He was crucified.

  144. And here's some women that come to serve him just the same,

  145. to continue the preparation of burial,

  146. to put spices there in the tomb.

  147. Sad, mourning over this loss.

  148. And they get there, and he is risen.

  149. He has conquered death on our behalf in that great act.

  150. We don't just talk about the death of Christ.

  151. We talk about the death, the burial,

  152. and the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

  153. All of these things are key and important

  154. to our understanding of the Gospel.

  155. That he bore for us the wrath of our sin.

  156. He died.

  157. The ultimate penalty for sin

  158. was buried and then resurrected.

  159. He conquered death on our behalf.

  160. The person and the work of Jesus Christ

  161. is so important for us to understand.

  162. There are many people across the world today

  163. that are sitting in services

  164. thinking that the very act of coming

  165. to an Easter service in some way

  166. puts them in right standing with God.

  167. If I go on Christmas and celebrate his birth,

  168. I go on Easter Sunday,

  169. I celebrate his resurrection,

  170. he'll find me just.

  171. Nicaragua is this way.

  172. There's a lot of religion down there,

  173. but I think very little Christianity.

  174. Lots of striving on their own part

  175. to be found right before God.

  176. And I ask the question to so many people

  177. that we sat and talked with,

  178. when you stand before God,

  179. how will you be judged?

  180. If you're found right,

  181. why will you be found right?

  182. And more often than not,

  183. I got blank stares.

  184. So I fed him the answer.

  185. You'll be found right

  186. because you placed your faith in Christ,

  187. right?

  188. In his person and his work.

  189. In the things that he has done for you.

  190. And all of you have added to the equation

  191. is belief.

  192. You believe that when you get there,

  193. when you're finally judged,

  194. you'll stand before God

  195. and he will say to you,

  196. well done my good and faithful servant,

  197. because you're found in Christ.

  198. That is the beauty of Christianity.

  199. Of what our God has done for us.

  200. It depends not at all on us.

  201. I've used the analogy

  202. of a whitewater river before here

  203. as I've been a whitewater paddler

  204. and talked about how

  205. the end of our life,

  206. if we're not found in Christ,

  207. is certain destruction.

  208. It's a massive waterfall.

  209. That we're going to go over.

  210. And this river is so wide

  211. that by our greatest efforts

  212. of swimming upstream,

  213. away from this peril that's behind us,

  214. we'll never, ever, ever

  215. be able to work our way

  216. to the safety of the shore

  217. unless someone comes to get us.

  218. Really, that analogy falls short.

  219. In even talking about us

  220. trying to swim,

  221. right?

  222. We can't do anything

  223. to gain our own salvation.

  224. Really, we're dead

  225. in our trespasses and our sin.

  226. Right?

  227. Really, we're dead

  228. and we're limp

  229. already headed towards

  230. our destruction.

  231. But Jesus Christ comes

  232. because of the person in the world,

  233. because of what he's done for us.

  234. He comes and he plucks us out

  235. and he puts us safely

  236. on the shore.

  237. He pumps the water

  238. out of our lungs.

  239. He revives us

  240. and gives us life

  241. in him.

  242. This is so incredibly important

  243. to recognize

  244. and that the resurrection

  245. is one of the many keys

  246. that are so important

  247. for that to happen.

  248. We have life

  249. because he is alive.

  250. Seated for us now,

  251. holding the world

  252. by the power of his word,

  253. what glorious, glorious truths

  254. these are.

  255. John chapter 8,

    John 8:31–36

  256. verse 31 through 36.

  257. Record,

  258. So Jesus said to the Jews

  259. who had believed in him,

  260. If you abide in my word,

  261. you are truly my disciples

  262. and you will know the truth

  263. and the truth will set you free.

  264. They answered him,

  265. We are offspring of Abraham

  266. and have never been enslaved

  267. to anyone.

  268. How is it that you say

  269. you will become free?

  270. Jesus answered them,

  271. Truly, truly,

  272. I say to you,

  273. everyone who practices sin

  274. is a slave to sin.

  275. The slave does not remain

  276. in the house forever.

  277. For the Son remains forever.

  278. So if the Son sets you free,

  279. you will be free indeed.

  280. So you see that these truths

  281. that I'm stating,

  282. these things about the personal work of Christ,

  283. are the overarching truths

  284. of this world.

  285. Every other truth

  286. is bound up in this,

  287. what Jesus Christ

  288. has accomplished

  289. for his church.

  290. And if we will abide

  291. in that truth,

  292. we will be set free

  293. by the Son.

  294. Now our text before us today

  295. talks also about the Scriptures,

  296. does it not?

  297. So our second point,

  298. just as Christ has welcomed us,

  299. those who were once enemies of God,

  300. utterly incapable

  301. of our own righteousness,

  302. he has welcomed us

  303. to set the example

  304. of the way we ought to welcome

  305. one another.

  306. The second point I want to make today,

  307. the observation,

  308. is that the Scriptures

  309. have been given to us

  310. for the blessing

  311. of hope.

  312. Look here at verse 4.

  313. For whatever was written

  314. in former days

  315. was written

  316. for our instruction,

  317. that through endurance

  318. and through the encouragement

  319. of the Scriptures,

  320. we might have hope.

  321. Whatever was written

  322. in the former days.

  323. So Paul was referring here

  324. to what we would call

  325. the Old Testament.

  326. These are the Scriptures

  327. that he's referencing

  328. at this point.

  329. The rest of the Scripture

  330. hadn't been canonized yet

  331. at this point.

  332. It hadn't been accepted

  333. as part of the revealed

  334. words of God.

  335. And so he's talking about

  336. the Old Testament here

  337. and directly he's referencing

  338. verse 3,

  339. the last half,

  340. here in chapter 15,

  341. where Jesus quotes

  342. from Psalm 69, 9,

  343. which is David speaking,

  344. but so much more so

  345. to Christ,

  346. the reproaches of those

  347. who reproached you

  348. fell on me.

  349. So he's specifically referencing

  350. Psalm 69, 9

  351. as he talks about

  352. those things written

  353. in former days.

  354. The general instruction

  355. of the Scriptures

  356. is included in that for us,

  357. right?

  358. For our instruction.

  359. But more than that,

  360. all of their Scripture

  361. to that date,

  362. and certainly all

  363. that had been added

  364. since then,

  365. shows us Christ,

  366. his person,

  367. and his work.

  368. Now many Christians

  369. don't believe this.

  370. Many Christians

  371. ignore the Old Testament

  372. altogether.

  373. They look to the New.

  374. Have you ever heard

  375. a Christian say that?

  376. I'm kind of a

  377. New Testament Christian.

  378. What does that mean?

  379. What are you even

  380. talking about?

  381. The Old Testament

  382. was enough

  383. for people to know

  384. that they needed

  385. a Savior.

  386. We've just now seen

  387. the revealing of all that,

  388. the working of it all out.

  389. In fact,

  390. the Old Testament

  391. is quoted 263 times

  392. in the New Testament.

  393. Jesus quoted it 78 times.

  394. Paul,

  395. just in the book of Romans,

  396. quotes it 84 times.

  397. The Old Testament

  398. gave us what we needed

  399. to know

  400. to know that we needed

  401. a Savior.

  402. The New Testament

  403. reveals Him to us.

  404. When Jesus Christ

  405. came on the scene,

  406. the Jews

  407. should have known.

  408. Had it been

  409. capable for them

  410. to understand

  411. and wrap their minds around,

  412. if the Scriptures

  413. weren't spiritually discerned,

  414. they should have known.

  415. All the keys were there

  416. for them to see Him,

  417. and they missed it.

  418. The Old Testament

  419. is so important,

  420. we actually distribute

  421. as Americans

  422. just New Testaments.

  423. I got a box

  424. in the mail

  425. from the North American

  426. Mission Board.

  427. We didn't ask for it,

  428. but a box

  429. of New Testaments.

  430. I think they want us

  431. to give them out.

  432. I'm not really sure.

  433. They sent us a box

  434. of New Testaments

  435. in the mail.

  436. All the Scriptures

  437. are precious.

  438. I'll hand you

  439. a book of Romans.

  440. In there is all

  441. you need to know

  442. to come to Christ,

  443. for sure.

  444. But we,

  445. as Christians,

  446. we even divorce

  447. the book.

  448. We put it in half.

  449. You know,

  450. that's the Old Testament.

  451. We've got the New Testament

  452. now.

  453. It's all valuable.

  454. It's all precious

  455. because it all

  456. speaks of

  457. Christ.

  458. He even says here

  459. in verse 4,

  460. we're given

  461. these Scriptures,

  462. the endurance

  463. through encouragement

  464. of the Scriptures,

  465. that we might have

  466. hope.

  467. And what is it

  468. that we're to hope in?

  469. Christ.

  470. For what?

  471. What do we hope

  472. in Christ for?

  473. We hope in Christ

  474. for future glory.

  475. A few chapters back,

  476. Romans chapter 8,

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  477. is all about that.

  478. Longing for future glory.

  479. All about waiting

  480. for us to be

  481. finally fixed up

  482. the way we were

  483. meant to be,

  484. the way we were

  485. created to be,

  486. unhindered by our flesh

  487. and the curse of sin.

  488. Able to worship

  489. and praise God

  490. forever and ever.

  491. This is the future glory

  492. that we're longing for

  493. here in chapter 8.

  494. And you remember,

  495. it's been a long time

  496. since we've been

  497. in chapter 8 together,

  498. but this would have

  499. been read.

  500. So,

  501. future glory

  502. would have been present

  503. on the minds

  504. of the original readers

  505. of this letter

  506. as he talks about it.

  507. Look at chapter 8,

  508. verse 23

  509. through 25

  510. as he talks about

  511. the creation,

  512. the creation itself

  513. longing for things

  514. to be set right,

  515. longing for Christ

  516. to finally return

  517. and finish

  518. his sovereign purpose

  519. in this world.

  520. And it says,

  521. but we ourselves

  522. who have the first fruits

  523. of the Spirit

  524. grown inwardly

  525. as we wait eagerly

  526. for adoption of sons,

  527. the redemption of our bodies,

  528. for in this hope

  529. we were saved.

  530. Now hope that is seen

  531. is not hope,

  532. for who hopes

  533. for what he sees?

  534. But if we hope

  535. for what we do not see,

  536. we wait for it

  537. with patience.

  538. And this is what

  539. the Scriptures

  540. are meant to do for us,

  541. to remind us

  542. of this great hope,

  543. to give us endurance

  544. and encouragement

  545. as we patiently wait

  546. for the coming

  547. of our Lord.

  548. The full fulfillment

  549. of all that he began

  550. in his death,

  551. burial,

  552. and resurrection.

  553. We want to see that

  554. come to culmination.

  555. We want to see him

  556. finish it all finally.

  557. And that's what he's

  558. referring to here

  559. as we have a hope.

  560. The word endurance

  561. here in ESV

  562. may be in some

  563. of your Bibles

  564. as perseverance,

  565. patience.

  566. We see that

  567. in chapter 8.

  568. And encouragement.

  569. So do you value

  570. the whole counsel of God

  571. for what it does

  572. for you in that way?

  573. I hope that you do.

  574. I hope that you

  575. treasure this book.

  576. This is an incredible book

  577. because these are

  578. the very words

  579. of God.

  580. Now granted,

  581. these are English

  582. translations

  583. of the very words

  584. of God.

  585. But still,

  586. precious,

  587. dividing our souls,

  588. working in us.

  589. If you've never

  590. experienced the life

  591. that comes from

  592. the scriptures,

  593. pray that you will.

  594. They're of extreme value.

  595. Let me just show you

  596. an example.

  597. Turn with me

  598. to the book

  599. of Psalm 119.

  600. Psalm 119.

  601. Psalm 119

  602. being a psalm

  603. all about

  604. God's Word,

  605. His precepts,

  606. His orders,

  607. His law.

  608. It's a very fascinating book.

  609. We'll probably look at it

  610. all together

  611. someday.

  612. Let me just pull out

  613. for you

  614. a few

  615. of the verses

  616. from here.

  617. Psalm 119,

  618. 46.

  619. I will also speak

  620. of your testimonies

  621. before kings

  622. and shall not be.

  623. I'm sorry.

  624. I'm reading the wrong one.

  625. 49.

  626. Remember your word

  627. to your servant

  628. in which

  629. you have made

  630. me hope.

  631. 119,

  632. 116.

  633. I marked these

  634. but I have a lot

  635. of them marked.

  636. That's why I'm having

  637. a hard time finding them.

  638. Psalm 119,

  639. 116.

  640. Uphold me

  641. according to your promise

  642. that I may live

  643. and let me not be put

  644. to shame

  645. in my hope.

  646. And Psalm 119,

  647. 166.

  648. I hope

  649. for your salvation,

  650. O Lord,

  651. and I do

  652. your commandments.

  653. So do you see here

  654. to the psalmist

  655. who we believe

  656. is David,

  657. right?

  658. To the psalmist

  659. the very words

  660. of God

  661. is what he hoped in.

  662. He knew

  663. that God's word

  664. was sure.

  665. Psalm 130,

    Psalms 130:5

  666. verse 5.

  667. I wait for the Lord.

  668. My soul waits.

  669. And in his word

  670. I hope.

  671. Because God's word

  672. to us

  673. is sure.

  674. If God doesn't

  675. keep his word,

  676. he ceases to be holy,

  677. he becomes a liar,

  678. and therefore

  679. he's not God.

  680. So by very definition,

  681. God himself cannot

  682. be a liar.

  683. Numbers 23,

    Numbers 23:19

  684. verse 19

  685. says,

  686. God is not man

  687. that he should lie,

  688. or a son of man

  689. that he should change

  690. his mind.

  691. Has he said

  692. and will he not do it?

  693. Or has he spoken

  694. and will he not

  695. fulfill it?

  696. So the scriptures

  697. for us

  698. are a great guide,

  699. a great promise

  700. of the hope

  701. that is to come.

  702. So if we're to

  703. live in this way

  704. that Paul is showing us,

  705. we have Christ

  706. as our supreme example,

  707. having been welcomed

  708. by him,

  709. and then we have

  710. the scriptures

  711. as a blessing

  712. of hope.

  713. Thirdly,

  714. God is the source

  715. of our endurance

  716. and our encouragement.

  717. Notice the first part

  718. of verse 5.

  719. May the God

  720. of endurance

  721. and encouragement

  722. grant you

  723. to live

  724. in such harmony

  725. with one another.

  726. May the God,

  727. the one who rules

  728. over endurance

  729. and encouragement.

  730. So we see

  731. that the scriptures

  732. are a provision for,

  733. but God is the source

  734. of

  735. this endurance

  736. and this encouragement.

  737. And Paul's

  738. benediction here,

  739. his brief benediction,

  740. is that God

  741. would grant us

  742. to live

  743. in harmony

  744. with one another

  745. the way we ought.

  746. That God would give it to us

  747. as a gift.

  748. We would call that

  749. in the church

  750. a grace.

  751. Something that we don't deserve.

  752. By his power,

  753. he would work

  754. in us

  755. harmony

  756. with one

  757. another.

  758. So we see

  759. in this little benediction,

  760. we see

  761. Paul's

  762. movement,

  763. his exhortation

  764. to the Roman believers

  765. to have a great

  766. devotion to the scriptures

  767. and

  768. to prayer.

  769. It follows

  770. that if

  771. our source

  772. for living

  773. in this way

  774. comes from God,

  775. that we

  776. must ask him

  777. for it.

  778. And God is faithful

  779. to provide

  780. to his children

  781. good things.

  782. Things that are

  783. within his will.

  784. This is a good,

  785. tested

  786. thing.

  787. This is something

  788. that Paul is saying

  789. to us we ought

  790. to be doing

  791. and therefore

  792. if we ask

  793. for it,

  794. we will receive

  795. this ability

  796. to live

  797. in harmony

  798. with one another.

  799. To put aside

  800. the things

  801. that are non-issue,

  802. the gray things,

  803. and to focus

  804. on the primary things,

  805. the black and white things,

  806. right?

  807. To embrace each other,

  808. to welcome one another,

  809. and to live in this way

  810. is a great gift

  811. from God.

  812. So we

  813. have the hope,

  814. we see it from the scriptures,

  815. what we ought to be doing

  816. and the way we ought to be living,

  817. and we pray

  818. that God will grant us

  819. the ability

  820. to do so.

  821. Recognize,

  822. I get the strain

  823. as we talk about

  824. God's sovereign hand

  825. in all things.

  826. I fully understand that.

  827. I started out today

  828. talking about providence.

  829. I fully believe

  830. that Jesus Christ,

  831. sitting at the right hand

  832. of the Father,

  833. by the power of his word,

  834. holds everything

  835. that happens in this world

  836. in his power,

  837. by his word,

  838. which is awesome

  839. because he's just

  840. speaking it

  841. and it happens.

  842. everything is under

  843. his control.

  844. And I recognize then

  845. some of the strain

  846. that creates for us

  847. and our responsibility.

  848. I know what that does

  849. to your minds sometimes.

  850. I know what it does

  851. to your hearts

  852. because I've been there.

  853. We recognize here

  854. that Paul's benediction,

  855. asking that God

  856. would grant them

  857. to live in harmony

  858. with one another,

  859. is not inconsistent.

  860. God uses our prayers

  861. as the means to his end.

  862. There's power in our prayer.

  863. God grants power

  864. to our prayer

  865. as the means to his end.

  866. God wants to knit together

  867. his church.

  868. God wants to be called together

  869. perfect and holy

  870. and he uses the prayers

  871. of his people

  872. to accomplish that goal.

  873. Why?

  874. Because he loves you.

  875. He doesn't just work it.

  876. He just doesn't make us

  877. into robots

  878. and we just go around

  879. loving one another.

  880. I love you, brother.

  881. Although I feel that way

  882. sometimes, right?

  883. But he asks that we

  884. fellowship with him,

  885. that we abide with him,

  886. that we come to him

  887. longing for the very things

  888. he longs to give us.

  889. And he does that

  890. through the vehicle

  891. of prayer.

  892. Prayer is the breath

  893. of the Christian life,

  894. just as the scriptures

  895. are the bread.

  896. We need both.

  897. We need to be fed

  898. and we need to breathe oxygen

  899. as Christians.

  900. And when we stop doing

  901. one or the other,

  902. we'll very quickly die.

  903. Right?

  904. I have in recent years

  905. recognized my prayerlessness.

  906. We must pray.

  907. It is a blessing to us.

  908. Let us take hold of it.

  909. So thirdly,

  910. that was God

  911. God is the source

  912. of endurance

  913. and encouragement.

  914. And fourthly,

  915. and finally,

  916. all things work

  917. to the great end

  918. of God's glory.

  919. All things work

  920. to the great end

  921. of God's glory.

  922. glory.

  923. So you see in verse 6

  924. that together,

  925. as we live in this way,

  926. we may with one voice

  927. glorify the God

  928. and Father

  929. of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  930. And then notice

  931. in verse 7,

  932. as he speaks

  933. of Christ welcoming us,

  934. he did so

  935. for the glory of God.

  936. Right?

  937. So we see here

  938. in both ways,

  939. we're meant to glorify God

  940. just as Christ

  941. glorified God

  942. as our supreme example

  943. of that.

  944. We're called to this

  945. together

  946. to not

  947. heap upon God

  948. something that isn't

  949. already his.

  950. We don't have things

  951. that he needs from us

  952. to make him great.

  953. He already is great.

  954. He uses us

  955. as his church

  956. to show

  957. his greatness.

  958. So everything

  959. he does

  960. and works through us

  961. is to show himself

  962. as magnificent,

  963. to show himself

  964. as supreme,

  965. to show himself

  966. as glorious.

  967. This is what's

  968. taking place

  969. in this activity.

  970. Christ knew that.

  971. He understood that

  972. completely.

  973. Christ did die

  974. for you.

  975. That's a reality.

  976. That's true.

  977. But it's a lesser reality

  978. than the greater reality.

  979. Ultimately,

  980. Christ died

  981. for God.

  982. Christ died

  983. as the great expression

  984. of God's love

  985. and justice

  986. to the world.

  987. I think all of God's story,

  988. the climax of it,

  989. comes together

  990. in the death,

  991. burial,

  992. resurrection

  993. of Jesus Christ.

  994. He magnified himself.

  995. He showed himself

  996. in the greatest

  997. possible way

  998. to be him.

  999. As he came

  1000. as a man,

  1001. lowly,

  1002. suffered,

  1003. died on our behalf,

  1004. but rose

  1005. as a great

  1006. conquering king.

  1007. This is a beautiful,

  1008. beautiful picture.

  1009. Christ knew

  1010. that his overarching,

  1011. his major purpose

  1012. was to honor God

  1013. as he died,

  1014. was buried,

  1015. and resurrected.

  1016. We should know

  1017. the same.

  1018. We tend to become

  1019. so humanistic

  1020. as Christians,

  1021. so inward focused,

  1022. so looking

  1023. to ourselves.

  1024. The gospel

  1025. is ultimately

  1026. not about us.

  1027. The gospel

  1028. is ultimately

  1029. about God.

  1030. we get to receive

  1031. the beautiful,

  1032. precious,

  1033. life-giving benefits

  1034. of this greater truth.

  1035. That God chose

  1036. to reveal himself

  1037. to man

  1038. in this way.

1039. We ought to praise him

  1040. for it.

  1041. Let's pray together.
