  1. And a good morning to you all. It's very good to see you here on this day.

  2. I ask that you open up your copy of God's Word.

  3. I hope you have it with you this day.

  4. Paul's letter to the Romans chapter 15.

    Romans 15 chapter mention

  5. We're going to look together this morning at verses 8 through 12.

  6. Romans chapter 15 verses 8 through 12.

    Romans 15:8–12

  7. For I tell you that Christ became a servant to the circumcised to show God's truthfulness

  8. in order to confirm the promise given to the patriarchs

  9. and in order that the Gentiles might glorify God for His mercy.

  10. As it is written,

  11. Therefore I will praise you among the Gentiles and sing to your name.

  12. And again it is said,

  13. Rejoice Gentiles with His people.

  14. And again, praise the Lord all you Gentiles

  15. and let all the peoples extol Him.

  16. And again Isaiah says,

  17. The root of Jesse will come,

  18. even he who arises to the rule Gentiles,

  19. in him with the Gentiles hope.

  20. Now I hope this morning that we're all a little more prepared

  21. than I was for Aletheia Way.

  22. But certainly we need God's blessing on the preaching of His word.

  23. So let's join together in prayer and ask for that.

  24. Father God, we praise you this morning for the good things you've done for us in Christ.

  25. And one of those things is you've given us your precious word,

  26. a great tool, an asset to us to live the Christian life,

  27. to see how it is that we ought to serve and worship and honor you.

  28. And we plead with you this morning, Lord, by your Spirit.

  29. Speak through me.

  30. Minister to all of our hearts.

  31. Soften them where they need softening.

  32. Harden them where they need hardening.

  33. That we might boldly proclaim your gospel to this world.

  34. That we might display the goodness of it in our own lives.

  35. That your name will be honored to all peoples.

  36. We pray this in Christ's name.

  37. Amen.

  38. So as we've continued through Romans,

  39. Paul has come and began to narrow the scope,

  40. the outworkings of the gospel,

  41. which he's presented to us in the first 11 chapters.

  42. He's beginning to show us how then,

  43. in light of these great gospel truths, we should live.

  44. And he does that through 12, 13, 14.

  45. And in 14, he really begins to talk about

  46. the gray areas of Christian life.

  47. The things that the scriptures don't speak to directly.

  48. What we should and shouldn't do in those gray realms.

  49. And he talks about how we ought to have unity in those things.

  50. And in the beginning of 15,

  51. he uses Christ as the example.

  52. You see in verse 7,

  53. Therefore, welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you.

  54. And in response to that,

  55. then he then broadens the scope once again.

  56. He then takes a step back up.

  57. And it seems like every time Paul talks about Jesus Christ,

  58. he doesn't narrow down.

  59. He goes bigger.

  60. He says,

  61. I just said the name Jesus Christ.

  62. I've got to proclaim something huge and massive and true

  63. about our glorious Savior and Lord.

  64. I imagine him being moved back towards

  65. what we sometimes call the high theology

  66. as he speaks of Christ and his work for us.

  67. So in response to him talking about Christ welcoming us,

  68. he expounds upon that a bit for us.

  69. And we see this here.

  70. And the teaching is fairly simple.

  71. We find it in verse 8 and the first part of 9

  72. with support, with Old Testament scriptural support.

  73. And here's what he's trying to say to us.

  74. Christ became a servant to the Jews,

  75. to the circumcised,

  76. to show God's truthfulness,

  77. to accomplish two things.

  78. Number one,

  79. in order to confirm the promises given to the patriarchs

  80. in the proof of God being true.

  81. And secondly,

  82. so that in order that the Gentiles

  83. would glorify God for his mercy.

  84. The point he's making to us,

  85. as Christ became a servant,

  86. verse 3 of chapter 15,

  87. For Christ did not please himself,

  88. but he pleased God with his action,

  89. with his sacrifice on our behalf.

  90. And he did these things

  91. in order to confirm the promises given to the patriarchs

  92. and to cause the Gentiles to glorify him for his mercy.

  93. So we're going to look together at these Old Testament proofs,

  94. and I'm going to expand upon them a bit

  95. to show you God's global purpose,

  96. what he has always intended from the very beginning of time,

  97. the way in which he intended to glorify himself,

  98. the way in which he chose to expose his very character to the world.

  99. Well, let's begin with this first little phrase,

  100. the first part of chapter, or verse 8.

  101. Christ became a servant to the circumcised

  102. to show God's truthfulness.

  103. At this point, you may ask a question,

  104. but didn't Christ come to serve the world?

  105. Here the text says he became a servant to the circumcised,

  106. and my response to that would be both yes and no.

  107. Take, for example, Matthew chapter 15, verse 24.

    Matthew 15:24

  108. We see a Canaanite woman come to him

  109. who's been oppressed by a demon,

  110. and she's coming to him for healing.

  111. And he responds to her in verse 24 of chapter 15,

  112. I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.

  113. So Christ was sent to serve Israel,

  114. to serve the Jews, his kin,

  115. the nation that he was born from.

  116. He was sent to serve them.

  117. But then what do we see her response to that being?

  118. She has this great measure of faith.

  119. As he says to her,

  120. I didn't come to serve the Canaanites,

  121. I came to serve the Jews.

  122. And she said,

  123. but even the dogs get scraps from the table.

  124. Your mercy surely extends beyond just those seated at the table.

  125. And he then rewards her for her great faith.

  126. So he expands then his mercy and his gospel beyond.

  127. So my answer to that is both yes and no.

  128. But Jesus was in fact sent to serve the Jews

  129. in order to confirm the promises given to the patriarchs,

  130. in order to prove God faithful,

  131. to fulfill all of the promises given to the patriarchs.

  132. Speaking expressly of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

  133. We see in Matthew chapter 5, verse 17,

    Matthew 5:17

  134. Jesus' Sermon on the Mount.

  135. He says,

  136. Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets.

  137. I have not come to abolish them, but to fulfill them.

  138. He fulfilled the law by upholding it,

  139. its sacredness, reestablishing its truth.

  140. He expounded upon what it meant.

  141. That's what the Sermon on the Mount is all about.

  142. It's about showing people what the law was originally intended for.

  143. He fulfilled the law by keeping it perfectly.

  144. Without flaw, Jesus Christ kept the law.

  145. But beyond that, He came to verify the whole revealed truth of God.

  146. 2 Corinthians chapter 1, verse 20,

    2 Corinthians 1:20

  147. reads,

  148. For all the promises of God, all of them,

  149. find their yes in Jesus Christ.

  150. That is why it is through Him that we utter our amen to God for His glory.

  151. All the promises of God are yes in Jesus Christ.

  152. And so as Paul is writing to an audience that was both Jew and Gentile,

  153. and he's coming off this treatise on the way we ought to live together in harmony.

  154. And the Jews were strict adherers to the Old Testament law,

  155. and many of them hadn't quite let go of the liberty that they now had in Christ.

  156. Still were very dogmatic about the things that they would and wouldn't eat.

  157. As an example, you'll see throughout chapter 14, right?

  158. I believe he's speaking here specifically to the Jews,

  159. to show them that the gospel was always meant to expand beyond their borders.

  160. The Jews' very calling, their very purpose from the beginning,

  161. the reason that they were called out as a people set apart for God,

  162. was to reach the Gentiles for His glory.

  163. The very purpose that they were created for.

  164. Which brings us to the second point, the thing he's trying to establish here, right?

  165. Christ became a servant to the circumcised to show God's truthfulness.

  166. Secondly, in order that the Gentiles might glorify God for His mercy.

  167. In order that the Gentiles might glorify God for His mercy.

  168. Now, when we read this phrase rendered this way in the ESV,

  169. you see that word might?

  170. And for us, that raises question.

  171. We would read it maybe, in order that the Gentiles could possibly glorify God.

  172. In order that the Gentiles could have the potential of glorifying God.

  173. But that's not what the original language means at all, right?

  174. The language used here is actually something that has already been accomplished.

  175. I won't get into all the details of that this morning.

  176. But, what really he's saying is, in order that the Gentiles would,

  177. in order that they necessarily did glorify God for His mercy,

  178. was something that was accomplished by Christ coming,

  179. serving the circumcised, and fulfilling,

  180. showing God's truthfulness to be true, accurate.

  181. Dependable, all right?

  182. And it's entirely consistent with the promises given to the patriarchs, okay?

  183. Paul's been working on establishing that for us this far.

  184. That, in fact, the gospel of grace was not meant just for the Jews,

  185. but meant for the world.

  186. That's that language we use.

  187. Paul's using the term Gentiles here so often,

  188. you could replace with that the nations, the world, peoples, okay?

  189. Gentiles is what the Jewish readers would have understood to be everyone but them, all right?

  190. So, recognize that it just expands to everyone, not including them, all the other people of the world.

  191. And that's the point he's making here.

  192. Flip with me back to the beginning of Romans.

  193. We're going to do a quick little tour through,

  194. just to show you the consistency of his argument here.

  195. Keep in mind that this would have been read all at one time, right?

  196. So, hopefully this would have been fresh on the original readers' minds as they came to this spot.

  197. I've been tempted so many times, rather than preaching a sermon,

  198. just to read you a whole book of the Bible,

  199. because that's what would have been done in the historical church.

  200. They would have received a letter from Paul,

  201. and they would have just stood up and read it,

  202. because the context is so important.

  203. I'll probably never do it, but maybe someday.

  204. We'll see.

  205. All right.

  206. So, Romans chapter 1, verses 4 and 5.

    Romans 1:4

  207. Let's start there.

  208. He says,

  209. So, he starts it very quickly here in his prologue in Romans.

  210. Now, turn to, well, you don't probably have to turn.

  211. Verse 13 through 16 of chapter 1.

  212. I want you to know, brothers, that I have often intended to come to you,

  213. but thus far have been prevented,

  214. in order that I may reap some harvest among you,

  215. as well as among the rest of the Gentiles.

  216. I am under obligation both to Greeks and to barbarians,

  217. both to the wise and to the foolish.

  218. So I am eager to preach the gospel to you also, who are in Rome.

  219. For I am not ashamed of the gospel,

  220. for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes,

  221. to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

  222. So there we see it again.

  223. Chapter 2, verse 24.

  224. Stated here in the negative, speaking of Israel.

  225. It says,

  226. For as it is written,

  227. The name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you.

  228. Because of the Jewish rejection of God and his ways.

  229. The name was blasphemed among the Gentiles.

  230. It was intended to not be.

  231. It was intended to be honored among the Gentiles.

  232. But because of their disobedience, it was blasphemed.

  233. Chapter 3, verse 29 and 30.

  234. Or is God the God of Jews only?

  235. Is he not the God of Gentiles also?

  236. Yes, of Gentiles also.

  237. Since God is one who would justify the circumcised by faith,

  238. and the uncircumcised through faith.

  239. Chapter 10, verse 12 and 13.

  240. For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek.

  241. For the same Lord is Lord of all,

  242. bestowing his riches on all who call on him.

  243. For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.

  244. Praise God.

  245. Chapter 11, right?

  246. Which is all about Israel and what will finally happen to Israel.

  247. And we talked at length about this.

  248. And I think at the end of it all, I really said, I don't know.

  249. I had a guess at what the outcome of it would be.

  250. But chapter 11, verses 11 and 12 and 25.

  251. So I asked, did they stumble in order that they might fall?

  252. By no means.

  253. Rather, through their trespass, salvation has come to the Gentiles.

  254. So as to make Israel jealous.

  255. Now if their trespass means riches for the world,

  256. and if their failure means riches for the Gentiles,

  257. how much more will their full inclusion mean?

  258. In verse 25.

  259. Lest you be wise in your own sight,

  260. I want you to understand this mystery, brothers.

  261. A partial hardening has come upon Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in.

  262. He's making the point pretty emphatically throughout the book of Romans so far.

  263. Now recognize that this has been canonized as scripture.

  264. The church has recognized Paul's letter to the Romans as inspired by the Spirit.

  265. And we have included it, canonized it into our scriptures.

  266. We see this as the word of God.

  267. And I fully believe that it is.

  268. I'm not so sure that as Paul was writing,

  269. he knew that's what was going to happen.

  270. He constantly references back.

  271. Constantly.

  272. I think it's 84 times in the book of Romans.

  273. He references the scriptures.

  274. What we would call the Old Testament.

  275. We talked last week about the great value of the Old Testament.

  276. How poorly neglected it is.

  277. But here, as he continues to make this point,

  278. as he's really trying to drive it home for us,

  279. that the gospel was not just for the Jews,

  280. but it was for the Gentiles.

  281. Praise God for that,

  282. because I think we're all included in that number.

  283. The Gentiles.

  284. All those who are not of Jewish descent.

  285. He, again,

  286. hearkens back to the Old Testament to prove his point.

  287. He quotes the Old Testament scriptures.

  288. We get four of them here,

  289. beginning in the last half of 9 through 12.

  290. We see four of them,

  291. and I want to read to you the original text,

  292. what he's actually quoting from,

  293. and you can look at it here in your own copy of the word.

  294. So the first one is from 2 Samuel 22, 50.

  295. For this I will praise you, O Lord,

  296. among the nations,

  297. and sing praises to your name.

  298. The second one, Deuteronomy 32, 43.

  299. Rejoice with him, O heavens.

  300. Bow down to him, all gods.

  301. The third one, Psalm 117, 1.

  302. Praise the Lord, all nations.

  303. Extol him, all peoples.

  304. And the fourth, Isaiah 11, verse 10.

    Isaiah 11:10

  305. In that day, the root of Jesse, being Christ,

  306. who shall stand as a signal for the peoples,

  307. of him shall the nations inquire,

  308. and his resting place shall be glorious.

  309. Now you may note, I hope you did,

  310. the reason I read them to you that way,

  311. is that Paul's quotes of these Old Testament texts aren't exact, are they?

  312. I'm reading the Old Testament English,

  313. right, the English translation in ESV,

  314. and it doesn't match up perfectly, does it?

  315. And the reason for that,

  316. is that in this day,

  317. culturally,

  318. rabbis were permitted to take some liberties with the scriptures.

  319. They were allowed to quote them in such a way

  320. to give greater understanding to the scripture itself.

  321. So take, for example,

  322. he replaces the nations with the word Gentiles.

  323. Speaking to a Jewish audience

  324. who wouldn't really have thought of

  325. all the nations of the world,

  326. but would have thought of them and everyone else.

  327. That's the term he's using here for Gentiles.

  328. You've got the Jews and everyone else.

  329. So he takes the liberty in this case to do this.

  330. Recognize also that this was written,

  331. this was dictated for him.

  332. I imagine him pacing around a room

  333. and putting out these scriptures from memory.

  334. Just toss them out there.

  335. Oh, and another thing.

  336. Pin this one down.

  337. And another thing.

  338. In 2 Samuel.

  339. Oh, and another place in Deuteronomy.

  340. Oh, and by the way, in Psalm.

  341. It's scholars that have gone back

  342. and matched it up and found.

  343. What is he referencing to?

  344. Also know that the punctuation that we have

  345. in our English language

  346. didn't exist in the original language as well.

  347. So we see it as these quotes.

  348. We've got the quotation marks.

  349. We've got clear punctuation.

  350. We've got, and it says, comma, right?

  351. And so for us, we immediately,

  352. especially those of you who are in college right now,

  353. want to quickly go to our citation rules

  354. and figure out how in the world

  355. Paul didn't get kicked out of school

  356. for misquoting and not citing it properly.

  357. Right?

  358. We do all those things.

  359. It was acceptable for him

  360. to use the scriptures in this way.

  361. And beyond all that, okay?

  362. So that's in one hand, right?

  363. More importantly, in this hand,

  364. this is inspired by the Spirit of God.

  365. So if he changes it just a little bit,

  366. praise God that he was trying to give us

  367. a better understanding.

  368. Help us really, it's the commentary

  369. of the Old Testament text

  370. to see that this was God's eternal purpose.

  371. Right?

  372. I want you to notice the types of quotations

  373. he uses here.

  374. Right?

  375. The first one is from one of the books of history,

  376. 2 Samuel.

  377. The second, from Deuteronomy,

  378. is a book of the law.

  379. The third, being from Psalm,

  380. is a book of poetry.

  381. And the fourth, being from Isaiah,

  382. is one of the books of the prophets.

  383. Paul used one of the,

  384. each of the four types of literary books

  385. in the Old Testament to make his point.

  386. And what he's trying to say to his readers

  387. and what he's saying to us this morning

  388. is that all of the Old Testament

  389. is consistent.

  390. The theme of this thing,

  391. of God coming to earth,

  392. condescending,

  393. in order to make himself known,

  394. to glorify himself to all peoples,

  395. is consistent in the Scriptures.

  396. It didn't start with Paul.

  397. Certainly Paul's ministry.

  398. He was an apostle sent to the Gentiles.

  399. Right?

  400. But it didn't start with them.

  401. A great example of that would be Nineveh.

  402. Jonah was sent to a people

  403. that were not of Jewish descent.

  404. Right?

  405. To preach repentance.

  406. A good example of this.

  407. It's consistent.

  408. And I want to broaden.

  409. I hope that Paul's argument is enough for you.

  410. It should be.

  411. It should be enough.

  412. He's showing you this theme here.

  413. But let me pull it up a little bit more.

  414. Let's look at a few more examples.

  415. And let's do the same thing he did.

  416. Let's look at a book of the law,

  417. history, poetry, and a prophet

  418. from the Old Testament.

  419. And then we'll look at a few

  420. New Testament examples as well.

  421. I'm going to Bible drill you

  422. a little bit this morning.

  423. So get ready for it.

  424. Let's go to Exodus chapter 9.

    Exodus 9 chapter mention

  425. And we'll go in order.

  426. Okay?

  427. Is that moment when you worry

  428. that your neighbor

  429. is going to judge you

  430. for not knowing exactly

  431. where some books of the Bible are?

  432. Okay?

  433. I cheated.

  434. I marked mine this morning.

  435. Exodus chapter 9,

    Exodus 9:13–16

  436. verses 13 through 16.

  437. Showing us the twofold purpose

  438. of the Exodus.

  439. The very reason that God

  440. delivered his people from Egypt.

  441. Then the Lord said to Moses,

  442. Rise up early in the morning

  443. and present yourself before Pharaoh

  444. and say to him,

  445. Thus says the Lord,

  446. the God of the Hebrews,

  447. Let my people go,

  448. firstly,

  449. that they may serve me.

  450. Verse 14.

  451. For this time,

  452. I will send all my plagues

  453. on you,

  454. yourself,

  455. and on your servants

  456. and your people

  457. so that they may know

  458. that there is none like me

  459. in all the earth.

  460. For by now,

  461. I could have put out my hand

  462. and struck you and your people

  463. with pestilence

  464. and you would have been cut off

  465. from the earth.

  466. But for this purpose,

  467. I have raised you up

  468. to show you my power

  469. so that my name

  470. may be proclaimed

  471. in all the earth.

  472. That's quoted in Romans 9,

    Romans 9:17

  473. verse 17,

  474. isn't it?

  475. So the twofold purpose

  476. of God bringing the people out

  477. of Egypt

  478. was that they would serve him,

  479. honor him,

  480. glorify him,

  481. and that all the peoples

  482. of the world

  483. might know of this God,

  484. might sing his praises

  485. one day.

  486. Book of History,

  487. Joshua,

    Joshua 4 chapter mention

  488. chapter 4.

  489. Just a couple of books over.

  490. This is the point

  491. that most papers

  492. usually tell you

  493. the page number

  494. that they're on.

  495. I think they're doing that

  496. to get you to buy

  497. the same Bible they have.

  498. I'm not really sure.

  499. Page 180,

  500. if you're using

  501. the same one I'm using.

  502. ESV Thinline,

  503. in case you needed to know.

  504. Joshua, chapter 4,

    Joshua 4:19–24

  505. verses 19 through 24.

  506. This is the purpose

  507. of the people crossing

  508. the Jordan

  509. into the Promised Land.

  510. They crossed on dry land

  511. just like they crossed

  512. the Red Sea

  513. to escape from Pharaoh's army.

  514. They crossed the Jordan

  515. on dry land.

  516. And here's the stated purpose

  517. for that very thing.

  518. Chapter 4, verse 19,

  519. we'll read through 24.

  520. The people came up

  521. out of the Jordan

  522. on the tenth day

  523. of the first month

  524. and they encamped

  525. at Gilgal

  526. on the east border

  527. of Jericho.

  528. And those twelve stones

  529. which they took out

  530. of the Jordan,

  531. Joshua set up

  532. at Gilgal.

  533. And he said

  534. to the people of Israel,

  535. when your children

  536. ask their fathers

  537. in times to come,

  538. what do these stones mean?

  539. Then you shall let

  540. your children know

  541. Israel passed over

  542. this Jordan

  543. on dry ground.

  544. For the Lord your God

  545. dried up the waters

  546. of the Jordan

  547. for you until you

  548. passed over

  549. as the Lord your God

  550. did to the Red Sea

  551. which you dried up

  552. for us

  553. until we passed over

  554. so that all the peoples

  555. of the earth

  556. may know

  557. that the hand

  558. of the Lord

  559. is mighty

  560. that you may fear

  561. the Lord your God

  562. forever.

  563. So here we see it again

  564. verse 24.

  565. So that,

  566. why?

  567. Why did all these

  568. things happen?

  569. So that all the peoples

  570. of the earth

  571. may know

  572. that the hand

  573. of the Lord

  574. is mighty.

  575. Book of poetry.

  576. Turn to the book

  577. of Psalm.

  578. Smack dab in the middle.

  579. You can find it.

  580. Over a hundred times

  581. in the Psalms

  582. this very point

  583. is made.

  584. We're going to look

  585. at three real quick.

  586. We're doing three

  587. because they're so good.

  588. Psalm chapter 2

    Psalms 2:8

  589. verse 8.

  590. This is a record

  591. of God

  592. speaking to Christ.

  593. That's important here.

  594. God speaking to Christ

  595. says,

  596. Ask of me

  597. and I will make

  598. the nations

  599. your heritage

  600. and the ends

  601. of the earth

  602. your possession.

  603. He says to Christ,

  604. Ask of me

  605. and I will give it all

  606. to you.

  607. Psalm 46.

  608. Verse 10.

  609. Be still

  610. and know

  611. that I am God.

  612. I will be exalted

  613. among the nations.

  614. I will be exalted

  615. in the earth.

  616. A promise.

  617. This will in fact

  618. come to pass.

  619. And Psalm 67.

  620. Psalm 67.

  621. The entire Psalm.

  622. This is so good.

  623. May God be gracious

  624. to us

  625. and bless us

  626. and make his face

  627. to shine upon us.

  628. Why?

  629. That your way

  630. may be known

  631. on earth.

  632. Your saving power

  633. among all nations.

  634. Let the peoples

  635. praise you,

  636. O God.

  637. Let all the peoples

  638. praise you.

  639. Let the nations

  640. be glad

  641. and sing for joy

  642. for you judge

  643. the peoples

  644. with equity

  645. and guide the nations

  646. upon earth.

  647. Let the peoples

  648. praise you,

  649. O God.

  650. Let all the peoples

  651. praise you.

  652. The earth has yielded

  653. its increase.

  654. God,

  655. our God,

  656. shall bless us.

  657. God shall bless us.

  658. Let all the ends

  659. of the earth

  660. fear him.

  661. A prophet.

  662. Ready for it?

  663. Zephaniah.

  664. Zephaniah.

  665. You're going to find

  666. Zephaniah

  667. between Habakkuk

  668. and Haggai

  669. if that helps you.

  670. See how you're flipping?

  671. If you're sitting

  672. judging your neighbor

  673. right now,

  674. these are hard

  675. because they're little.

  676. So don't be too hard

  677. on people.

  678. Don't be too hard

  679. on people.

  680. Don't be too hard

  681. on people.

  682. chapter 2,

  683. verse 11.

  684. If you're not there yet,

  685. just listen.

  686. The Lord will be

  687. awesome against them

  688. for he will famish

  689. all the gods of the earth

  690. and to him

  691. shall bow down

  692. each in its place

  693. all the lands

  694. of the nations.

  695. There it is again

  696. from a minor prophet.

  697. Let's look in the New Testament

  698. together now.

  699. Notice I'm doing

  700. the very same thing

  701. Paul did.

  702. Now I get the advantage

  703. of the New Testament.

  704. Paul didn't have that

  705. at his disposal

  706. in this time.

  707. Letting the Scripture

  708. speak for itself.

  709. Notice the theme.

  710. Let's look at a Gospel.

  711. John,

    John 3:16

  712. chapter 3,

  713. verse 16.

  714. And I use this one

  715. specifically to show you

  716. that the theme

  717. carries on.

  718. Okay?

  719. For God so loved the world

  720. that he gave his only Son

  721. that whoever believes in him

  722. should not perish

  723. but have eternal life.

  724. For God did not send his Son

  725. into the world

  726. to condemn the world

  727. but in order that the world

  728. might be saved

  729. through him.

  730. Whoever believes in him

  731. is not condemned.

  732. Whoever does not believe

  733. is condemned already

  734. because he has not believed

  735. in the name

  736. of the only Son of God.

  737. The point of the text being

  738. the point of it being

  739. Jesus here is recorded

  740. talking to a Jewish audience

  741. and he's saying

  742. this salvation

  743. the Son of Man

  744. did not come just for you.

  745. He came for all the nations.

  746. Stop thinking you're so special Israel.

  747. It goes beyond your borders.

  748. This is what Jesus is saying

  749. in this text.

  750. It's beautiful

  751. and it's precious

  752. because in this

  753. is our salvation.

  754. Right?

  755. It expands beyond

  756. just the Jews.

  757. Me as a

  758. I don't even know

  759. where I'm from.

  760. I think maybe England.

  761. I'm guessing.

  762. Maybe I'm of like

  763. Norman descent.

  764. Dad would probably tell you

  765. exactly where we're from.

  766. Not now, Dad.

  767. I don't know.

  768. But it doesn't really matter.

  769. I'm not of Jewish descent.

  770. Okay?

  771. But the promises of God

  772. are yes to me

  773. in Christ.

  774. Right?

  775. And let's look at

  776. some New Testament prophecy.

  777. Let's turn to the book

  778. of Revelation.

  779. See how this all works out

  780. in the end.

  781. Revelation chapter 5.

    Revelation 5 chapter mention

  782. Verse 9 and 10.

  783. John gets to peer into heaven

  784. at the end of things.

  785. And this is what he observes.

  786. Chapter 9 of chapter 5.

  787. Excuse me.

  788. Verse 9 of chapter 5.

  789. And they sang a new song

  790. saying,

  791. Worthy are you

  792. to take the scroll

  793. and to open its seals.

  794. For you were slain

  795. and by your blood

  796. you ransomed people for God

  797. from every tribe

  798. and language

  799. and people

  800. and nation.

  801. And you have made them

  802. a kingdom

  803. and priests

  804. to our God

  805. and they shall reign

  806. on the earth.

  807. And then again,

  808. chapter 7

  809. verses 9 and 10.

  810. Verse 9 of chapter 5.

  811. Verse 9 of chapter 5.

  812. Verse 9 of chapter 5.

  813. And then again,

  814. So it's accomplished.

  815. From the beginning

  816. this was God's intent.

  817. And in the end

  818. it's accomplished.

  819. Now people have debated

  820. throughout time

  821. what is meant

  822. by these different things,

  823. the tribes,

  824. the nations.

  825. What is meant by this?

  826. And I really,

  827. honestly,

  828. don't know.

  829. We tend as Baptists

  830. to believe

  831. that this will represent

  832. there will be

  833. those named in heaven

  834. amongst every people group.

  835. Every tribe,

  836. nation,

  837. language.

  838. But you know

  839. what's the really important thing?

  840. Really important thing

  841. is that Christ hasn't returned

  842. so it's not done yet.

  843. We can bank on that.

  844. We know we're not finished yet.

  845. God's mission in this world

  846. is still being carried out

  847. because Christ hasn't returned.

  848. When it's finished

  849. he'll come back.

  850. We're guaranteed that.

  851. So we're still

  852. to be about the work

  853. however it's defined.

  854. We're still meant

  855. to be advancing

  856. the gospel

  857. in this world.

  858. So

  859. back in

  860. Romans chapter 15

    Romans 15 chapter mention

  861. the important question

  862. for you to ask

  863. and not in an irreverent way

  864. is so what?

  865. Why?

  866. Why is the case

  867. being made to us?

  868. What are we meant

  869. to do

  870. with this information?

  871. Why have I spent

  872. all this time

  873. sharing it with you?

  874. Proving the point.

  875. Hopefully pressing it

  876. through your mind

  877. into your heart.

  878. There's two things

  879. at least two things

  880. that we ought to be doing

  881. with this kind of info.

  882. First

  883. we need to be

  884. praising God

  885. for his goodness

  886. to us

  887. in Christ.

  888. Praising God

  889. for his goodness

  890. to us

  891. in Christ.

  892. This is the gospel

  893. ladies and gentlemen.

  894. The fact that God

  895. has chosen

  896. to make himself known

  897. to display

  898. his mercy

  899. to us

  900. verse 9

  901. in this way

  902. is such

  903. a blessing.

  904. That God

  905. as he's zealous

  906. for his own glory

  907. to make himself

  908. look more like he is

  909. to show himself

  910. to this world

  911. has chosen

  912. to let us

  913. be the benefactors

  914. of it

  915. is such

  916. a blessing.

  917. The gospel

  918. is not

  919. first and foremost

  920. primarily

  921. about us.

  922. It's firstly

  923. about God

  924. and we get

  925. to benefit.

  926. Praise God

  927. that he decided

  928. to work this out

  929. in this way.

  930. That he chose

  931. to show mercy

  932. to us

  933. so that we'll

  934. sing to his name.

  935. Do you

  936. praise God

  937. the way the

  938. saints in Revelation

  939. praise God?

  940. God.

  941. Notice the

  942. emotion

  943. that we

  944. poured into that.

  945. We read that

  946. kind of stuff

  947. so boring

  948. sometimes.

  949. I hope I

  950. didn't just

  951. do the

  952. very thing

  953. I'm

  954. accusing us

  955. of doing.

  956. Emotionless.

  957. It's a great

  958. passion poured

  959. into the praise

  960. of God

  961. because of

  962. what he's

  963. accomplished

  964. on our behalf.

  965. So firstly,

  966. we ought to

  967. praise God

  968. for his goodness

  969. to us

  970. in Christ.

  971. Today,

  972. now,

  973. sitting in your

  974. seat,

  975. you ought to

  976. be praising God

  977. for his goodness

  978. to you

  979. in Christ.

  980. You,

  981. a Gentile.

  982. You,

  983. one of the

  984. peoples

  985. of the

  986. earth.

  987. Secondly,

  988. we need to

  989. recognize that

  990. we are the

  991. tools by

  992. which God

  993. accomplishes

  994. this task.

  995. This task,

  996. making himself

  997. known to all

  998. the peoples

  999. of the world.

  1000. See,

  1001. this to be

  1002. accomplished

  1003. in the book

  1004. of Revelation.

  1005. How is it

  1006. that he does

  1007. that?

  1008. He uses

  1009. his church

  1010. to accomplish

  1011. this.

  1012. He uses

  1013. his church.

  1014. I like to

  1015. think of it

  1016. like this.

  1017. And somebody

  1018. said this.

  1019. I can't

  1020. remember who.

  1021. Somebody smarter

  1022. than me

  1023. said,

  1024. God has not

  1025. given a

  1026. mission to

  1027. the church,

  1028. but rather

  1029. he's given

  1030. the church

  1031. to his

  1032. mission.

  1033. Got a cool

  1034. way of thinking

  1035. about it?

  1036. God didn't

  1037. have a church

  1038. that said,

  1039. now,

  1040. I've got to

  1041. get them

  1042. busy doing

  1043. something.

  1044. Oh,

  1045. proclaiming

  1046. my goodness

  1047. to the world.

  1048. That's the

  1049. task I'm

  1050. going to

  1051. put him

  1052. to.

  1053. He's about

  1054. proclaiming

  1055. his goodness

  1056. to the world.

  1057. He's about

  1058. making himself

  1059. known amongst

  1060. all peoples,

  1061. and he

  1062. called us

  1063. together,

  1064. he formed

  1065. the church

  1066. so that

  1067. we could be

  1068. the tool

  1069. by which

  1070. that's

  1071. accomplished.

  1072. Every time

  1073. I say this,

  1074. I'm also

  1075. going to say,

  1076. God does

  1077. not need

  1078. us.

  1079. He could

  1080. do it

  1081. another way.

  1082. He could

  1083. do it

  1084. on his

  1085. own,

  1086. but he's

  1087. chosen

  1088. to use

  1089. us because

  1090. he loves

  1091. us.

  1092. He's chosen

  1093. to let

  1094. us get

  1095. caught up

  1096. with him

  1097. in accomplishing

  1098. this thing,

  1099. to experience

  1100. him in

  1101. this way

  1102. because

  1103. he loves

  1104. us.

  1105. Romans

    Romans 10 chapter mention

  1106. chapter 10.

  1107. You can

  1108. flip back

  1109. a little

  1110. bit here.

  1111. Verse 14,

  1112. how then will

  1113. they call

  1114. on him

  1115. in whom

  1116. they have

  1117. not

  1118. believed?

  1119. And how

  1120. are they

  1121. to believe

  1122. in him

  1123. of whom

  1124. they have

  1125. never

  1126. heard?

  1127. And how

  1128. are they

  1129. to hear

  1130. without

  1131. someone

  1132. preaching?

  1133. And how

  1134. are they

  1135. to preach

  1136. unless

  1137. they are

  1138. sent?

  1139. As it

  1140. is written,

  1141. how beautiful

  1142. are the feet

  1143. of those

  1144. who preach

  1145. the good

  1146. news?

  1147. God is

  1148. zealous

  1149. for his

  1150. own glory.

  1151. And in the

  1152. same way,

  1153. as children

  1154. of the

  1155. Most High,

  1156. those who

  1157. have been

  1158. delivered,

  1159. welcomed

  1160. by Christ,

  1161. we're just

  1162. talking about

  1163. the beginning

  1164. of chapter

  1165. 15,

  1166. we also

  1167. ought to

  1168. be zealous

  1169. for his

  1170. name to

  1171. be proclaimed

  1172. amongst

  1173. the nations.

  1174. Do we

  1175. go to

  1176. peoples,

  1177. our neighbors,

  1178. our co-workers,

  1179. those we sit

  1180. in class

  1181. with,

  1182. and those

  1183. at the

  1184. very furthest

  1185. possible place

  1186. we can

  1187. imagine

  1188. in the

  1189. earth

  1190. because

  1191. we love

  1192. them?

  1193. Absolutely.

  1194. But the

  1195. lesser

  1196. includes

  1197. the

  1198. greater,

  1199. the greater

  1200. being

  1201. that we're

  1202. zealous

  1203. for God's

  1204. name to

  1205. be proclaimed

  1206. among

  1207. all peoples.

  1208. We serve

  1209. a great

  1210. and a

  1211. glorious

  1212. God,

  1213. and we

  1214. want,

  1215. I hope

  1216. I can

  1217. say this

  1218. with confidence,

  1219. we want

  1220. his name

  1221. to be

  1222. proclaimed

  1223. everywhere.

  1224. We want

  1225. people to

  1226. serve him

  1227. and bow

  1228. in adoration

  1229. of him

  1230. and speak

  1231. the truth

  1232. of the

  1233. gospel.

  1234. Our

  1235. vision statement

  1236. for our

  1237. church,

  1238. Christ's

  1239. family

  1240. church

  1241. exists

  1242. to glorify

  1243. God

  1244. by

  1245. experiencing,

  1246. proclaiming,

  1247. and displaying

  1248. the supremacy

  1249. of Jesus

  1250. Christ

  1251. in all

  1252. things

  1253. to all

  1254. peoples.

  1255. We want

  1256. that to be

  1257. true of our

  1258. own lives.

  1259. We want

  1260. to be

  1261. truly

  1262. regenerate

  1263. believers.

  1264. We want

  1265. to experience

  1266. the supremacy

  1267. of Christ

  1268. in our

  1269. own

  1270. living.

  1271. We want

  1272. it to

  1273. affect

  1274. how we

  1275. respond to

  1276. things.

  1277. We want

  1278. to affect

  1279. how we

  1280. feel.

  1281. We want

  1282. it to

  1283. affect

  1284. what we

  1285. hold to

  1286. in this

  1287. world.

  1288. But not

  1289. just that.

  1290. It can't

  1291. just be

  1292. for us.

  1293. It needs

  1294. to be

  1295. for everybody.

  1296. So we

  1297. want to

  1298. proclaim

  1299. it.

  1300. We want

  1301. to speak

  1302. the truth

  1303. of the

  1304. gospel.

  1305. The

  1306. gospel is

  1307. necessary

  1308. to be

  1309. heard,

  1310. for a

  1311. heart

  1312. to be

  1313. pricked

  1314. to believe.

  1315. We want

  1316. to speak

  1317. the gospel.

  1318. We want

  1319. to proclaim

  1320. it.

  1321. And we

  1322. want to

  1323. display

  1324. it with

  1325. acts

  1326. of mercy.

  1327. We want

  1328. to carry

  1329. the gospel

  1330. in our

  1331. actions to

  1332. the world

  1333. around us.

  1334. In all

  1335. things.

  1336. To all

  1337. peoples.

  1338. It's a

  1339. great website

  1340. I'll encourage

  1341. you to go

  1342. to.

  1343. There may

  1344. be a

  1345. better one,

  1346. but I've

  1347. used one

  1348. called

  1349. Joshua

  1350. Project.

  1351. You can

  1352. Google

  1353. Joshua

  1354. Project.

  1355. And according

  1356. to Joshua

  1357. Project,

  1358. in the world

  1359. right now,

  1360. there are

  1361. 16,594

  1362. people groups.

  1363. Of those,

  1364. 7,162

  1365. are unreached.

  1366. Now the way

  1367. the Joshua

  1368. Project defines

  1369. unreached is

  1370. that less

  1371. than 2%

  1372. of the

  1373. population are

  1374. confessing

  1375. Christians.

  1376. And even

  1377. at that

  1378. point we

  1379. could say,

  1380. are they

  1381. really

  1382. Christians?

  1383. They've

  1384. confessed it,

  1385. are they

  1386. regenerate,

  1387. are they

  1388. bearing fruit?

  1389. But that's

  1390. the way they

  1391. do it.

  1392. They had to

  1393. pick a

  1394. number.

  1395. So less

  1396. than 2%

  1397. are unreached.

  1398. That's

  1399. 43.2%

  1400. of the

  1401. people groups

  1402. in the

  1403. world.

  1404. You break

  1405. it down

  1406. by population,

  1407. and again,

  1408. we're talking

  1409. about

  1410. those who

  1411. confess to

  1412. be Christian,

  1413. 60%

  1414. of the

  1415. world's

  1416. population.

  1417. It's a

  1418. huge,

  1419. huge number.

  1420. And it

  1421. can be so

  1422. staggering at

  1423. times that it

  1424. cripples us.

  1425. We don't even

  1426. know.

  1427. How do we

  1428. get that

  1429. accomplished?

  1430. You know what

  1431. the great

  1432. thing is?

  1433. It's God's

  1434. mission.

  1435. God's

  1436. accomplishing it,

  1437. and he just

  1438. wants to

  1439. use you

  1440. in some

  1441. way to

  1442. accomplish

  1443. that.

  1444. It doesn't

  1445. mean that

  1446. you're

  1447. necessarily

  1448. going to

  1449. be called

  1450. to go

  1451. to a

  1452. people

  1453. group

  1454. that's

  1455. unreached.

  1456. But it

  1457. could,

  1458. and I

  1459. really hope

  1460. that you're

  1461. opening yourself

  1462. up and being

  1463. available for

  1464. that.

  1465. You being

  1466. obedient to

  1467. God's

  1468. call in your

  1469. life could

  1470. mean that

  1471. you live

  1472. right here

  1473. in Dahlonega,

  1474. and you're

  1475. a valuable

  1476. member of

  1477. our church,

  1478. and you

  1479. work a

  1480. job,

  1481. and you

  1482. create

  1483. money,

  1484. and you

  1485. have a

  1486. family,

  1487. and you

  1488. raise

  1489. them up

  1490. in the

  1491. way of

  1492. God,

  1493. all those

  1494. things are

  1495. a huge

  1496. possibility

  1497. for your

  1498. life.

  1499. Absolutely.

  1500. That may

  1501. be exactly

  1502. what God

  1503. wants for

  1504. you.

  1505. But he

  1506. also may,

  1507. on the

  1508. other end

  1509. of the

  1510. spectrum,

  1511. want you

  1512. to go and

  1513. spend your

  1514. life on

  1515. the mission

  1516. field.

  1517. He may

  1518. want you

  1519. to go and

  1520. be martyred

  1521. in a place

  1522. that's

  1523. dangerous,

  1524. that the

  1525. gospel has

  1526. yet to be

  1527. proclaimed.

  1528. We're

  1529. excited about

  1530. it.

  1531. In

  1532. verse 20

  1533. of

  1534. chapter 15,

  1535. Paul says,

  1536. And thus I

  1537. make it my

  1538. ambition to

  1539. preach the

  1540. gospel,

  1541. not where

  1542. Christ has

  1543. already been

  1544. named,

  1545. lest I

  1546. build on

  1547. someone else's

  1548. foundation,

  1549. but as it

  1550. is written,

  1551. those who

  1552. have never

  1553. been told of

  1554. him will

  1555. see,

  1556. and those

  1557. who have

  1558. never heard

  1559. will understand.

  1560. Paul was

  1561. zealous for

  1562. the name of

  1563. Christ to

  1564. be named

  1565. amongst the

  1566. Gentiles.

  1567. That's why

  1568. he went,

  1569. look in the

  1570. appendix of

  1571. your Bible,

  1572. there's probably

  1573. a little

  1574. cool map of

  1575. his

  1576. missionary

  1577. journeys.

  1578. That's why

  1579. he traveled

  1580. far and

  1581. wide to

  1582. share this

  1583. gospel.

  1584. So God

  1585. may call

  1586. you to

  1587. do that

  1588. very thing,

  1589. to go to

  1590. an unreached

  1591. people somewhere

  1592. in the world.

  1593. I learned of

  1594. a new one.

  1595. I try to

  1596. keep my

  1597. mind into

  1598. unreached

  1599. peoples.

  1600. I try to

  1601. pray for

  1602. them.

  1603. I try to

  1604. kind of

  1605. have a

  1606. global

  1607. mindset.

  1608. As God

  1609. has a

  1610. global

  1611. mindset,

  1612. it's really

  1613. easy for

  1614. us to

  1615. get our

  1616. little

  1617. small

  1618. box,

  1619. Dahlonega

  1620. slash

  1621. Gainesville,

  1622. Georgia,

  1623. and not

  1624. think about

  1625. God's

  1626. eternal

  1627. purposes for

  1628. the world.

  1629. So I

  1630. try to

  1631. read about

  1632. this,

  1633. and I

  1634. found,

  1635. I get a

  1636. couple of

  1637. magazines that

  1638. help me with

  1639. this,

  1640. but this one

  1641. I found in

  1642. The Bathroom

  1643. Reader.

  1644. You guys are

  1645. familiar with

  1646. that?

  1647. It's a great

  1648. book,

  1649. The Bathroom

  1650. Reader.

  1651. It's just

  1652. interesting

  1653. facts,

  1654. and we keep

  1655. it in the

  1656. bathroom.

  1657. But I learned

  1658. about a people

  1659. group in The

  1660. Bathroom Reader

  1661. called the

  1662. Sentinelese.

  1663. They live on

  1664. an island in

  1665. the Bay of

  1666. Bengal,

  1667. which is off

  1668. the eastern

  1669. coast of

  1670. India,

  1671. and I'm

  1672. going to say

  1673. it wrong,

  1674. Burma.

  1675. I know it's

  1676. called something

  1677. else now.

  1678. Thank you.

  1679. Okay.

  1680. Off the

  1681. western coast

  1682. of Myanmar.

  1683. That's right.

  1684. Thank you,

  1685. guys.

  1686. There's a

  1687. little island

  1688. there.

  1689. And The Bathroom

  1690. Reader, of

  1691. course, wasn't

  1692. speaking from a

  1693. missionary

  1694. perspective,

  1695. but talked

  1696. about this

  1697. people group

  1698. that have

  1699. been encountered

  1700. in a very

  1701. small way

  1702. by the rest

  1703. of the world.

  1704. A very, very

  1705. small way.

  1706. In fact, the

  1707. only real

  1708. western

  1709. interaction

  1710. they've had

  1711. is the

  1712. British,

  1713. back in the

  1714. 1800s,

  1715. there was a

  1716. visiting family

  1717. from this

  1718. island on a

  1719. neighboring

  1720. island,

  1721. and they

  1722. captured them.

  1723. And the

  1724. hope was that

  1725. they were

  1726. going to make

  1727. them like

  1728. them and

  1729. send them

  1730. back to

  1731. their people.

  1732. But in

  1733. the meantime,

  1734. the two

  1735. parents died

  1736. of sickness,

  1737. western

  1738. diseases that

  1739. they weren't,

  1740. ready for.

  1741. And so they

  1742. took the

  1743. kids and

  1744. dropped them

  1745. off in the

  1746. bay and

  1747. let the

  1748. kids swim

  1749. to shore.

  1750. And that's

  1751. been about

  1752. it.

  1753. The Indian

  1754. nation for

  1755. a while was

  1756. working on

  1757. trying to

  1758. build some

  1759. rapport with

  1760. them and

  1761. connect with

  1762. them and

  1763. see what

  1764. they could

  1765. accomplish.

  1766. And so

  1767. they sent

  1768. throughout the

  1769. 80s and

  1770. 90s,

  1771. they sent

  1772. out boats

  1773. regularly who

  1774. just simply

  1775. went into

  1776. the little

  1777. bay and

  1778. threw

  1779. things overboard

  1780. for them

  1781. to wash

  1782. up on

  1783. shore.

  1784. Because if

  1785. they went

  1786. on shore,

  1787. they were

  1788. likely to be

  1789. killed.

  1790. So this is

  1791. people that

  1792. have been

  1793. accessed in

  1794. such a

  1795. limited way.

  1796. How are

  1797. they going to

  1798. believe in

  1799. the gospel

  1800. if someone

  1801. doesn't preach

  1802. it to them?

  1803. They won't.

  1804. The gospel

  1805. needs to be

  1806. carried to

  1807. this people

  1808. group.

  1809. people who

  1810. really have

  1811. been isolated

  1812. for the

  1813. last thousands

  1814. of years

  1815. will probably

  1816. die as

  1817. neighboring

  1818. tribes have

  1819. died on

  1820. other islands

  1821. if they're

  1822. exposed to

  1823. western

  1824. diseases.

  1825. And now

  1826. India has

  1827. seen it

  1828. fruitless.

  1829. Somebody just

  1830. one day said,

  1831. why are we

  1832. trying to

  1833. do this?

  1834. These are

  1835. tribal people

  1836. living on

  1837. this island.

  1838. Why are we

  1839. trying to be

  1840. friends with

  1841. them exactly?

  1842. This is

  1843. costing a lot

  1844. of money.

  1845. We're throwing

  1846. a lot of

  1847. coconuts

  1848. into their

  1849. bay for no

  1850. reason.

  1851. What are we

  1852. doing?

  1853. So they

  1854. just stopped

  1855. and in fact

  1856. now they

  1857. enforce a

  1858. three mile

  1859. radius with

  1860. planes and

  1861. boats.

  1862. They enforce

  1863. a radius

  1864. around the

  1865. island so

  1866. that people

  1867. can't touch

  1868. it.

  1869. So they

  1870. can't get

  1871. there.

  1872. How does

  1873. the gospel

  1874. of God

  1875. get to the

  1876. Sentinelese

  1877. on North

  1878. Sentinel Island

  1879. in the Bay

  1880. of Bengal?

  1881. I don't

  1882. know.

  1883. I actually

  1884. for fun have

  1885. been trying

  1886. to rack my

  1887. brain about

  1888. how in the

  1889. world you

  1890. would even

  1891. get there

  1892. and how

  1893. you would

  1894. accomplish

  1895. people who

  1896. probably speak

  1897. a language

  1898. that no

  1899. one

  1900. else in

  1901. this world

  1902. knows.

  1903. How do

  1904. you do

  1905. this type

  1906. of work?

  1907. And you've

  1908. got a nation

  1909. India actually

  1910. enforcing it

  1911. keeping you

  1912. away from

  1913. it.

  1914. How is the

  1915. gospel going

  1916. to be carried?

  1917. And I don't

  1918. know but praise

  1919. God we serve

  1920. a sovereign

  1921. God who is

  1922. in control of

  1923. these things.

  1924. He knows

  1925. right?

  1926. And he knows

  1927. that maybe

  1928. someone in

  1929. this room is

  1930. going to go

  1931. to the

  1932. Sentinelese

  1933. and find a

  1934. way to

  1935. preach the

  1936. gospel there.

  1937. There are

  1938. countless

  1939. others

  1940. 7162

  1941. as qualified

  1942. by the

  1943. Joshua Project

  1944. people who

  1945. have never

  1946. heard the

  1947. gospel of

  1948. Christ.

  1949. God has

  1950. not given

  1951. a mission

  1952. to the

  1953. church but

  1954. rather the

  1955. church to

  1956. his mission.

  1957. And whether

  1958. we stay

  1959. here or go

  1960. there,

  1961. we're all

  1962. called to be

  1963. caught up in

  1964. this, to be

  1965. zealous for

  1966. Christ's name

  1967. to be

  1968. proclaimed

  1969. everywhere.

  1970. So don't

  1971. think that if

  1972. you're not

  1973. called to

  1974. foreign missions

  1975. that you're

  1976. in a different

  1977. category.

  1978. The term

  1979. missionary was

  1980. invented.

  1981. It's not in

  1982. the scriptures

  1983. anywhere.

  1984. We see

  1985. followers of

  1986. Christ.

  1987. We see

  1988. perseverers.

  1989. We see

  1990. disciples.

  1991. We're all

  1992. meant to be

  1993. missionaries if

  1994. you want to

  1995. think about it

  1996. in that term.

  1997. It's okay

  1998. that we've

  1999. created a term

  2000. for people who

  2001. spend their

  2002. full time,

  2003. it's a vocation

  2004. to go

  2005. overseas.

  2006. It's okay

  2007. that we do

  2008. that.

  2009. But the

  2010. danger of

  2011. it is that

  2012. we cease to

  2013. do anything

  2014. because we're

  2015. not missionaries.

  2016. We're not

  2017. radical like

  2018. that.

  2019. We're all

  2020. called to

  2021. serve God

  2022. in this

  2023. way.

  2024. The things

  2025. of this

  2026. earth are

  2027. fading away.

  2028. They're

  2029. turning to

  2030. dust.

  2031. They're

  2032. passing.

  2033. Soon

  2034. they will

  2035. be gone.

  2036. Do you

  2037. spend your

  2038. energies on

  2039. those things,

  2040. on the

  2041. finite,

  2042. or are you

  2043. spending your

  2044. energy on

  2045. the infinite?

  2046. joy,

  2047. joy,

  2048. abounding joy

  2049. will be yours

  2050. if you do.

  2051. Verse 13,

  2052. we'll talk about

  2053. that next week.

  2054. Let's pray

  2055. together.
