  1. That has also been turning to joy as we begin a new study together.

  2. And we'll spend most of this summer, the next couple of months,

  3. looking together at the book of Nehemiah.

  4. Let me begin this morning as I heard a sermon this week on this book.

  5. There was a quote read from a book by a man named Wesley Finn

  6. called Man Ruined and Restored.

  7. I just want to begin reading to you this quote, this little story he told.

  8. And a preacher made the mistake of showing two boys the text he would be preaching from

  9. that Sunday, the previous Saturday afternoon.

  10. When he turned his back, the boys glued some of the pages of his Bible together.

  11. Not a funny joke, young men.

  12. So on Sunday, when he stood to preach, he read,

  13. And Noah, when he was 120 years old, took unto himself a wife who was,

  14. then turning the page, 300 cubits long, 50 cubits wide, and 30 cubits high,

  15. built of gopher wood, and pitch within and without.

  16. Puzzled, he paused, read it again, and then looked up at his congregation and said,

  17. I have read the Bible through many, many times,

  18. but this is the first time I have ever read this.

  19. Yet I believe the Bible to be true from cover to cover,

  20. so I accept it as truth that we are fearfully and wonderfully made.

  21. Reading that to you just to say, there are parts of our Bible that have yet to be peeled open.

  22. And that's a sad thing in American Christianity,

  23. that we altogether have neglected whole sections of the Scriptures.

  24. Many Christians walk around acting as if the only inspired part of the Bible is the New Testament.

  25. I made a little jest at you earlier.

  26. Some of us just carry New Testaments around with us,

  27. and that's okay.

  28. There's such valuable truths contained within,

  29. but it's certainly a mark of a mature Christian when we begin to value the Old Testament Scriptures.

  30. We begin to see that they speak of Christ as well.

  31. And those of us who are standing on this side of the cross

  32. now have the ability to see all of the fulfillment of the promises of God.

  33. And therefore, the Old Testament Scriptures become that much more precious to us.

  34. It's a people not looking to the promise,

  35. wanting to know how it is that this promise will be fulfilled,

  36. but having seen it fulfilled,

  37. we now get to take on a new and a deeper appreciation for the things contained in the Old Testament.

  38. And so, it's my hope as we peel the pages of Nehemiah open

  39. that you will begin to appreciate the Old Testament text as much of as the first.

  40. Now, the book of Nehemiah today, I'm going to give you kind of a sweeping overview of it.

  41. It records events chronologically from Nehemiah's first term as governor of Jerusalem,

  42. those of you who care about dates,

  43. from about 445 to 433 B.C.

  44. That's Nehemiah 1-12,

  45. to his second term as governor,

  46. possibly beginning about 424 B.C.

  47. That's the place that we put this book.

  48. Now, you may be a bit confused,

  49. because in your Bible, it's going to be ordered.

  50. So, we have 1-2 Samuel, 1-2 Kings, 1-2 Chronicles,

  51. Ezra, Nehemiah.

  52. Where does Nehemiah fall, though, in the timeline of reality, of the actual world?

  53. These are ordered by history books.

  54. It doesn't work out quite that way.

  55. At the same time as Nehemiah, we have Haggai and Zechariah,

  56. the events that happen in the book of Esser,

  57. and then Malachi.

  58. Really, if we were going to put it in chronological order,

  59. it belongs towards the end of our Old Testament.

  60. This is after Babylonian exile.

  61. This is the people returning again to the land that God had given them.

  62. God goes silent after Malachi comes and prophesies for 400 years,

  63. and then comes back on the scene when we see

  64. the heralding of the births of John the Baptist and Jesus Christ.

  65. So, that's where this fits.

  66. Some of you may have a chronological Bible,

  67. or they're kind of neat because they break things apart

  68. and put them in that proper order.

  69. Recognize that this is not laid out normally, normatively, in that way.

  70. They're grouped by types of books.

  71. And here we have a book of history.

  72. So, that's where this falls.

  73. Nehemiah was not written by Nehemiah.

  74. It's widely accepted that it was written by Ezra.

  75. In fact, the Latin Vulgate calls Nehemiah Ezra II.

  76. It's a continuation of.

  77. The early historical evidences actually show Ezra and Nehemiah as one book.

  78. Now, there's certainly some first-hand quotations

  79. believed to be taken from Nehemiah's own journal, Ezra pulled from.

  80. But the evidences we have,

  81. we see the recurrent phrase,

  82. hand of the Lord, very similar writing.

  83. And then as well as Ezra's role as a priest-scribe,

  84. which would have granted him access

  85. to the royal archives of the Persian Empire.

  86. So, we see these vast lists

  87. of the numbers of people that returned to Jerusalem.

  88. And Ezra would have actually had the access to those records,

  89. whereas Nehemiah would have not.

  90. So, it's widely accepted that Ezra was actually the writer

  91. of the book of Nehemiah.

  92. Now, at this point, you may be saying,

  93. great, fantastic facts.

  94. We know where it falls in time.

  95. We know who wrote it.

  96. But why are we going to be using Nehemiah?

  97. I've said to you already,

  98. I hope to give you an appreciation of the Old Testament text.

  99. Is that really a good reason, though,

  100. to delve into it together?

  101. It's a small reason, not a large reason,

  102. but it is a reason.

  103. The reason we're going to study Nehemiah together this summer

  104. is that I believe it's very timely for us.

  105. The place that our church is now.

  106. And I'll share a little more with you

  107. as we go on through this Sunday and in the coming weeks.

  108. And you'll begin to understand, I think,

  109. why I believe that to be the case.

  110. But let me just say to you,

  111. as an overarching reason,

  112. is that Nehemiah was a man who cared deeply

  113. about the glory of God

  114. and the good of God's people.

  115. He cared deeply about the glory of God

  116. and the good of God's people.

  117. And I think that this can speak to us

  118. where we are.

  119. So, let's look at the text together.

  120. Nehemiah chapter 1.

    Nehemiah 1 chapter mention

  121. We're just going to read together

  122. the first four verses.

  123. The words of Nehemiah, the son of Hakaliah.

  124. Now, it happened in the month of Chislev

  125. in the 20th year,

  126. as I was in Susa, the citadel,

  127. that Hanani, one of my brothers,

  128. came with certain men from Judah.

  129. And I asked them concerning the Jews who escaped,

  130. who had survived the exile,

  131. and concerning Jerusalem.

  132. So he said,

  133. how are things going back in Jerusalem?

  134. And they said to me,

  135. the remnant there in the province

  136. who had survived the exiles

  137. is in great trouble.

  138. This word in Hebrew is the opposite of peace.

  139. They're in turmoil and shame.

  140. They were being ridiculed

  141. because the wall of Jerusalem is broken down

  142. and its gates are destroyed by fire.

  143. And this grieves Nehemiah.

  144. Deeply grieves him.

  145. Look at verse 4.

  146. As soon as I heard these words,

  147. I sat down and wept and mourned for days.

  148. And I continued fasting and praying

  149. before the God of heaven.

  150. Now, to understand why Nehemiah may have felt this way,

  151. I think it's important that we get

  152. a little bit of a background.

  153. We set a stage leading up to this very point.

  154. Remember that the nation of Israel

  155. was formed around a patriarch, Abraham.

  156. Abraham was called by God

  157. to be a people for his possession.

  158. He promised to bless the nations in him.

  159. Gave him the name Abraham.

  160. And this nation grew.

  161. And of course, there's a lot of events.

  162. I'm sweeping through Old Testament history here.

  163. Grew to a nation that was ruled by three kings.

  164. Saul, David, and Solomon.

  165. This was Israel's golden age.

  166. They were the power to be reckoned with

  167. in that region.

  168. Mighty.

  169. David.

  170. You read the stories of David

  171. and the conquering that he did in those days.

  172. But because Solomon compromised so greatly

  173. with the things of God,

  174. God promised to bring calamity.

  175. Bring a judgment upon them.

  176. But because God loved David

  177. the way he loved him,

  178. he told Solomon that it wouldn't come to pass

  179. until Solomon died.

  180. And that's what happened.

  181. That's exactly what happened.

  182. A civil war broke out.

  183. The nation became divided.

  184. Israel, the group in the north,

  185. took the name Israel.

  186. Judah in the south.

  187. It was the most prominent tribe.

  188. They took the name Judah in the south.

  189. In 722 BC,

  190. the Assyrians,

  191. a great world power at the time,

  192. came and sacked,

  193. conquered in the northern kingdom.

  194. Pillaged, plundered,

  195. thousands died.

  196. They carried away captives.

  197. The tragic time for the northern kingdom.

  198. And then in roughly 605 to 586,

  199. the Babylonians did the same

  200. in the south.

  201. Turn with me back

  202. just a couple of books

  203. to 2 Chronicles.

  204. So you're going to have

  205. Ezra before Nehemiah

  206. and then 2 Chronicles

  207. right at the end,

  208. chapter 36.

  209. You read with me

  210. a little bit about this.

  211. 2 Chronicles 36,

  212. beginning in verse 15.

  213. The Lord,

  214. the God of their fathers,

  215. sent persistently to them

  216. by His messengers

  217. because He had compassion

  218. on His people

  219. and on His dwelling place.

  220. But they kept mocking

  221. the messengers of God,

  222. despising His words

  223. and scoffing at His prophets

  224. until the wrath of the Lord

  225. rose against His people

  226. until there was no remedy.

  227. Thereofor He brought up against them

  228. the king of the Chaldeans,

  229. Babylonians,

  230. interchangeable words here,

  231. who killed their young men

  232. with a sword

  233. in the house of their sanctuary

  234. and had no compassion

  235. on young man or a virgin,

  236. old man or aged.

  237. He gave them all

  238. into His hand.

  239. And all the vessels

  240. of the house of God,

  241. great and small,

  242. and the treasures

  243. of the house of the Lord,

  244. and the treasures

  245. of the king and of his princes,

  246. all these He brought to Babylon.

  247. And they burned

  248. the house of God,

  249. and here you go,

  250. and broke down the wall

  251. of Jerusalem

  252. and burned all its palaces

  253. with fire

  254. and destroyed

  255. all its precious vessels.

  256. He took into exile

  257. He took into exile

  258. in Babylon

  259. those who had escaped

  260. from the sword,

  261. and they became servants

  262. to Him and to His sons

  263. until the establishment

  264. of the kingdom of Persia.

  265. So here you see

  266. the destruction of Jerusalem

  267. to the degree

  268. that they actually

  269. tore down the walls.

  270. And the walls were significant

  271. both practically

  272. and symbolically.

  273. Practically,

  274. they protected the city.

  275. People came inside

  276. and they closed up the gates

  277. as a way they fended off

  278. attackers.

  279. Symbolically,

  280. it meant that the city

  281. was healthy.

  282. It meant that it had power

  283. because of the might

  284. of the walls.

  285. And the Babylonians

  286. knew this,

  287. and therefore they

  288. destroyed it.

  289. They laid it to waste.

  290. Jerusalem was ruined.

  291. And they carried

  292. everybody off.

  293. These dark,

  294. dark days.

  295. It's prophesied

  296. in Jeremiah chapter 25

    Jeremiah 25 chapter mention

  297. that they would be gone

  298. for 70 years.

  299. And this is exactly

  300. what happened.

  301. What happened

  302. to cause the tide

  303. to turn?

  304. What was it that

  305. began to allow

  306. the Jews

  307. to enter back

  308. into the promised land?

  309. It was a handing off

  310. of world power.

  311. The Persians

  312. conquered the Babylonians

  313. about 539 B.C.

  314. Such a cool picture

  315. of God's providence

  316. and the way

  317. He works

  318. in the world.

  319. He used the pagan peoples

  320. to judge His own,

  321. to judge Israel.

  322. And then He uses

  323. pagan peoples

  324. coming and conquering

  325. the Babylonians

  326. to send them back.

  327. The way He works

  328. and uses world events

  329. is rather incredible.

  330. And so we see

  331. that they were

  332. then sent back.

  333. 2 Chronicles 36

  334. 22-23

  335. Now in the first year

  336. of Cyrus,

  337. king of Persia,

  338. that the word of the Lord

  339. by the mouth of Jeremiah

  340. might be fulfilled,

  341. the Lord stirred up

  342. in the spirit of Cyrus,

  343. king of Persia,

  344. so that He made a proclamation

  345. throughout all His kingdom

  346. and also put it in writing,

  347. Thus says Cyrus,

  348. king of Persia,

  349. the Lord,

  350. the God of heaven

  351. has given me

  352. all the kingdoms of the earth

  353. and He has charged me

  354. to build Him

  355. a house at Jerusalem

  356. which is in Judah.

  357. Whoever is among you

  358. all of His peoples,

  359. may the Lord His God

  360. be with you.

  361. Let Him go up.

  362. So we begin to see

  363. a movement

  364. back towards

  365. the promised land.

  366. So,

  367. if you'll allow,

  368. we'll call the first group

  369. Group A,

  370. right?

  371. This is who Cyrus sends,

  372. the people that went back,

  373. they were led by a man

  374. named Zerubbabel,

  375. which is a fantastic name

  376. to say.

  377. I got to say it

  378. over and over this week,

  379. right?

  380. A man named Zerubbabel

  381. led them back,

  382. right?

  383. Took them 20 years

  384. to rebuild the temple,

  385. but that's what they

  386. set themselves to doing

  387. when they returned.

  388. You can read about this

  389. in the book of Ezra,

  390. right?

  391. Eighty years later,

  392. we've got Group B,

  393. and this is when

  394. spiritual reform

  395. begins to take place.

  396. And then 13 years later,

  397. here we have Nehemiah

  398. hearing the news

  399. of what's going on.

  400. So,

  401. we know the temple's

  402. been restored,

  403. some spiritual revival

  404. is beginning to happen there,

  405. but the walls

  406. are still not built.

  407. It's been 90 years

  408. since the people

  409. were released by Persia

  410. to go back,

  411. and yet,

  412. the city still lays

  413. in shambles.

  414. It's fascinating

  415. that Nehemiah was a layman.

  416. Here we find him

  417. serving the now king

  418. of Persia,

  419. King Artaxerxes,

  420. as his cupbearer.

  421. He was the guy

  422. that drank the wine

  423. before the king

  424. to be sure

  425. that it wasn't poisoned.

  426. A layman used

  427. in such a powerful way

  428. by God.

  429. It's an encouragement

  430. to me as a fairly

  431. uneducated,

  432. unequipped man.

  433. Nehemiah was used

  434. in mighty ways,

  435. and he was uniquely

  436. fitted for the task.

  437. Uniquely fitted

  438. for the task

  439. that was ahead of him.

  440. He was the cupbearer

  441. to Artaxerxes,

  442. which meant that

  443. if a cupbearer

  444. did his job well,

  445. he became a trusted friend

  446. of the king.

  447. He stood at his side

  448. all the time.

  449. Anytime the king drank,

  450. the cupbearer

  451. was there with him,

  452. served him as a friend.

  453. Often they became

  454. great counselors

  455. to the king.

  456. The king would bounce ideas

  457. off of the cupbearer.

  458. And here you see

  459. as Nehemiah is serving

  460. in his presence,

  461. chapter 2,

  462. that his face is long.

  463. He's sad,

  464. which was not a thing

  465. you did in front of a king.

  466. Kings wanted joyful people

  467. around them.

  468. I could say that of myself.

  469. Like,

  470. don't come around me

  471. and be sad.

  472. That's just depressing.

  473. Be happy around me.

  474. But here he is

  475. with a long face,

  476. risking his very life,

  477. but he's in such mourning

  478. and torment

  479. over what's happening

  480. in Israel

  481. that the king asks him,

  482. why are you so sad?

  483. And he shares with the king

  484. and the king does

  485. a phenomenal thing.

  486. Again,

  487. moved along

  488. by the prominence of God

  489. and gives to him

  490. basically a blank check.

  491. He says,

  492. well,

  493. go then.

  494. Go back and build

  495. the walls.

  496. Writes him letters.

  497. Gives him an armed escort

  498. to go back.

  499. Gives him letters

  500. to reap

  501. harvest of lumber

  502. from Lebanon

  503. to build

  504. precious,

  505. precious lumber

  506. in this area

  507. to build back up

  508. the wall.

  509. It's a great,

  510. great,

  511. great picture of this

  512. and as Nehemiah himself says,

  513. the good hand of God

  514. was upon me.

  515. Nehemiah was a man

  516. zealous

  517. for the glory of God.

  518. The reason

  519. that he's so

  520. torn,

  521. that he weeps

  522. and mourns

  523. for days,

  524. that he risks

  525. his own life

  526. being sad

  527. in the presence

  528. of the king

  529. is that

  530. the state of Israel

  531. in these days

  532. was the visible

  533. glory of God.

  534. It was the

  535. manifestation

  536. of God's goodness,

  537. of his character

  538. to his people.

  539. And the fact

  540. that they were

  541. in such shambles

  542. was an affront

  543. to what God

  544. had done for them.

  545. The fact that the people

  546. for 90 years

  547. had yet to put themselves

  548. to the work

  549. of rebuilding that,

  550. of properly displaying

  551. what God had done

  552. for them

  553. is why he's torn up.

  554. He cares about

  555. the good

  556. of God's people,

  557. but he primarily

  558. cares about the glory

  559. of his God.

  560. That people would

  561. properly worship him,

  562. properly see him

  563. for who he is.

  564. He was zealous

  565. for God's glory.

  566. And he was a man

  567. of prayer.

  568. We see in

  569. 13 chapters,

  570. we see him pray

  571. on 10 separate times.

  572. The book of Nehemiah

  573. both opens

  574. and closes

  575. with Nehemiah

  576. in prayer.

  577. because he understood

  578. the sovereign hand

  579. of God

  580. and his great

  581. necessity of it.

  582. So Nehemiah

  583. was uniquely

  584. fitted for this

  585. task

  586. that was set

  587. before him.

  588. So we see here

  589. in this story,

  590. to kind of give you

  591. the framework,

  592. and we're going to go

  593. back and fill in

  594. the pieces here,

  595. that he travels

  596. back to Israel

  597. with an armed guard

  598. sent by the king.

  599. When he gets there,

  600. he spends three days

  601. examining the situation.

  602. He even goes out

  603. by night

  604. to see the condition

  605. of the wall,

  606. to see what kind

  607. of task was set

  608. before him.

  609. And then he calls

  610. together the people

  611. to build.

  612. And the text records

  613. for us that they

  614. brought their hands

  615. to bear,

  616. for the people

  617. had a mind

  618. or a heart

  619. to work.

  620. So he rallies

  621. them together

  622. to do this great work

  623. that's ahead of them.

  624. And it'd be really

  625. great at this point

  626. if the story ended

  627. and we just said,

  628. well, fantastic,

  629. and they built the wall

  630. and everybody lived,

  631. happily ever after.

  632. But it didn't go

  633. so easy for them,

  634. right?

  635. There was much

  636. opposition to the work.

  637. And at this point,

  638. we can pause

  639. and reflect upon

  640. our own lives

  641. and the opposition

  642. that we experience

  643. in them.

  644. This morning,

  645. Sam allowed me

  646. to come up

  647. to the building early

  648. and just do a little bit

  649. of last preparation

  650. for the day.

  651. But I was thinking

  652. about it being

  653. Father's Day

  654. and I was thinking

  655. about dads

  656. loading kids

  657. into vans

  658. and the screaming

  659. and the wanting

  660. of juice

  661. and crackers

  662. and those of you

  663. who are without children

  664. will not understand

  665. the chaos sometimes

  666. that happens

  667. on a Sunday morning

  668. before we come here.

  669. There's opposition

  670. to the work, right?

  671. Like dads,

  672. how many times

  673. do you feel like

  674. just turning around

  675. and going back

  676. to the house

  677. saying,

  678. fine,

  679. this is not going well

  680. for us this day,

  681. right?

  682. There's much calamity,

  683. many things

  684. battling against us

  685. to do the work

  686. that's set before us

  687. by our Lord.

  688. That's a very minor

  689. example,

  690. I'm aware.

  691. But there's much

  692. opposition.

  693. The peoples of the land

  694. as they're referred to

  695. here in Nehemiah

  696. don't want to see

  697. Israel rebuild the walls.

  698. They don't want to see

  699. them fortify

  700. and protect themselves.

  701. They want glory

  702. and honor to belong

  703. to King Artaxerxes,

  704. not to the God

  705. of these people.

  706. And so there's plotting

  707. against them

  708. or we're going to

  709. study some of that

  710. together.

  711. There's times at which

  712. they're both building

  713. the wall

  714. and they've got swords

  715. on their sides.

  716. There's times at which

  717. they're carrying things

  718. in one hand

  719. and a sword

  720. in the other hand.

  721. But they were so

  722. determined.

  723. They had their minds,

  724. their hearts,

  725. set to the work

  726. before them.

  727. And so they complete

  728. the wall.

  729. I hope I'm not

  730. breaking,

  731. shattering your

  732. spoiler alert here

  733. for the story.

  734. They do in fact

  735. build the wall.

  736. They build it

  737. in 52 days.

  738. Something that

  739. hadn't been completed

  740. in 90 years.

  741. They set their minds

  742. to it.

  743. They work hard

  744. in spite of the opposition

  745. and they build the wall

  746. in 52 days.

  747. And we see this record

  748. through to chapter 7

  749. of the book.

  750. And it doesn't end there.

  751. The building is not

  752. yet done.

  753. The spiritual rebuilding

  754. begins at that point.

  755. As I told you,

  756. there's some things

  757. beginning to happen.

  758. Some spiritual revitalization

  759. happening back

  760. with that second movement

  761. we called Group B.

  762. But it really takes off

  763. at this point.

  764. In chapters 8-13

  765. we see this.

  766. And 8-10

  767. we probably have

  768. the greatest record

  769. in the scriptures

  770. of spiritual revival.

  771. They pull out

  772. the law

  773. and they open it

  774. and it's read before them

  775. by Ezra

  776. and there's this

  777. great repentance

  778. followed by

  779. wonderful praise

  780. of the things

  781. that God

  782. has done for them.

  783. This huge, huge revival

  784. that happens

  785. and we get the

  786. great privilege

  787. of getting to look

  788. at that together

  789. and what revival

  790. looks like

  791. in the land.

  792. And I want to tell you

  793. I've got four objectives

  794. in our time together

  795. over the summer.

  796. Four things

  797. that I hope to accomplish

  798. as we study this together.

  799. Firstly,

  800. I want to expand

  801. your appreciation

  802. for the inspired words

  803. of God.

  804. As I said before,

  805. the whole thing

  806. is inspired

  807. and given to us

  808. for our instruction.

  809. I want you to really

  810. take hold

  811. of that.

  812. Now it's going to be

  813. a challenge for me.

  814. I really much prefer

  815. to preach verse by verse

  816. through the epistles.

  817. The teaching,

  818. the doctrinal parts.

  819. This is narrative.

  820. It's going to be

  821. a little bit challenging

  822. for me,

  823. but as I've discovered

  824. that 40% of our scriptures

  825. is narrative.

  826. 40% of it

  827. is narrative.

  828. It is a wonderful,

  829. wonderful way

  830. to understand

  831. and to see

  832. the great truths

  833. of God

  834. as we see

  835. the stories of God

  836. being played out.

  837. There's evangelistic

  838. movements around

  839. the world right now

  840. that are using

  841. storytelling

  842. to present the gospel.

  843. It's a valuable way

  844. for us to learn

  845. information.

  846. Some of you

  847. may remember

  848. some of the books

  849. that you were

  850. forced to read

  851. in high school

  852. and the themes

  853. contained within them

  854. because you remember

  855. the story.

  856. You get the story.

  857. Still, right now

  858. The Great Gatsby

  859. has come out

  860. in a movie.

  861. I was forced

  862. to read that book

  863. in high school

  864. and I remember

  865. the themes

  866. of that story

  867. because I can remember

  868. what happens

  869. in it.

  870. So I hope that

  871. you'll appreciate

  872. better the inspired

  873. words of God

  874. in our study together

  875. which means

  876. I've got to work

  877. hard at showing

  878. it to you

  879. and showing you

  880. its great value.

  881. Secondly,

  882. I want to expose

  883. you to the character

  884. of God.

  885. I want to expose

  886. you to the character

  887. of God

  888. and I know

  889. that that sounds

  890. lofty

  891. and academic.

  892. You certainly

  893. could take

  894. a lot of notes.

  895. We could

  896. systematically

  897. work through

  898. the character

  899. of God

  900. but here we see

  901. it played out

  902. in a story

  903. and I can tell

  904. you that all

  905. the doctrines

  906. that really

  907. affect my life

  908. the things

  909. I really

  910. take hold of

  911. and work in me

  912. I came to

  913. by reading

  914. about stories

  915. of God.

  916. Take for example

  917. the gospel

  918. of grace

  919. the doctrines

  920. of grace.

  921. This really

  922. began to mean

  923. something to me

  924. when I began

  925. to read stories

  926. like in Genesis

  927. the life of Joseph

  928. who was sold

  929. into slavery

  930. thrown into jail

  931. ended up

  932. in a prominent

  933. position

  934. that he might

  935. save his people

  936. and you see

  937. the sovereign

  938. hand of God

  939. working

  940. and moving

  941. and suddenly

  942. the little

  943. things of my

  944. life

  945. little things

  946. that are nothing

  947. like getting

  948. sold into slavery

  949. nothing like

  950. being thrown

  951. into prison

  952. for being

  953. righteous

  954. very

  955. unmonumental

  956. right?

  957. Much of an

  958. effect as I

  959. see the sovereign

  960. hand of God

  961. working in

  962. things like

  963. this.

  964. I'll give you

  965. a list

  966. just in the

  967. book of Nehemiah

  968. the way that

  969. God is referred

  970. to here

  971. in the text

  972. and I don't

  973. believe this is

  974. exhaustive at all

  975. but listen to

  976. this

  977. he is called

  978. the great

  979. and awesome

  980. God

  981. the faithful

  982. God

  983. the loving

  984. God

  985. the powerful

  986. God

  987. the strong

  988. God

  989. the maker

  990. of the heavens

  991. the maker

  992. of earth

  993. and seas

  994. the life

  995. giver

  996. the sovereign

  997. God

  998. the righteous

  999. God

  1000. the covenant

  1001. keeping

  1002. God

  1003. the God

  1004. who performs

  1005. signs and

  1006. wonders

  1007. the delivering

  1008. God

  1009. the providing

  1010. God

  1011. the forgiving

  1012. God

  1013. the God

  1014. who is

  1015. gracious

  1016. compassionate

  1017. and patient

  1018. the teaching

  1019. God

  1020. the good

  1021. God

  1022. the judging

  1023. God

  1024. the admonishing

  1025. God

  1026. the just

  1027. God

  1028. the remembering

  1029. God

  1030. the rewarding

  1031. God

  1032. the God

  1033. who is the

  1034. giver

  1035. of great

  1036. joy

  1037. just in the

  1038. book of

  1039. Nehemiah

  1040. this is how

  1041. Nehemiah

  1042. speaks or Ezra

  1043. speaks of

  1044. Nehemiah

  1045. of his

  1046. God

  1047. many people

  1048. would preach

  1049. to you the

  1050. book of

  1051. Nehemiah

  1052. and at the

  1053. end of it

  1054. you would

  1055. say

  1056. Nehemiah

  1057. was a

  1058. great

  1059. guy

  1060. we ought

  1061. to be

  1062. more like

  1063. Nehemiah

  1064. but I

  1065. say to

  1066. you

  1067. if that's

  1068. what we

  1069. accomplished

  1070. this summer

  1071. we failed

  1072. I failed

  1073. you

  1074. you failed

  1075. in your

  1076. listening

  1077. that's not

  1078. what we

  1079. ought to

  1080. walk away

  1081. with

  1082. we ought

  1083. to walk

  1084. away

  1085. saying

  1086. what a

  1087. great

  1088. God

  1089. Nehemiah

  1090. worshipped

  1091. and served

  1092. that's what

  1093. we ought

  1094. to walk

  1095. away

  1096. with

  1097. because we

  1098. do in

  1099. fact

  1100. serve a

  1101. great

  1102. God

  1103. and

  1104. Nehemiah

  1105. is such

  1106. a wonderful

  1107. example

  1108. of that

  1109. the things

  1110. that

  1111. Nehemiah

  1112. does in

  1113. here

  1114. are not

  1115. a response

  1116. to his

  1117. own

  1118. character

  1119. right

  1120. man that

  1121. Nehemiah

  1122. what a

  1123. hard worker

  1124. he built

  1125. a wall

  1126. in 52

  1127. days

  1128. it's not

  1129. a response

  1130. to his

  1131. leadership

  1132. ability

  1133. it's a

  1134. response

  1135. to who

  1136. his

  1137. God

  1138. was

  1139. and is

  1140. for us

  1141. that's what

  1142. caused him

  1143. that's what

  1144. motivated him

  1145. to work

  1146. to lead

  1147. in the way

  1148. that he

  1149. did

  1150. we should

  1151. walk away

  1152. from here

  1153. praising

  1154. our

  1155. great

  1156. God

  1157. thirdly

  1158. I want

  1159. to show

  1160. you the

  1161. timeliness

  1162. of these

  1163. lessons

  1164. for the

  1165. work that's

  1166. ahead of

  1167. us

  1168. as we

  1169. build a

  1170. church

  1171. to the

  1172. glory

  1173. of God

  1174. I'm going

  1175. to draw

  1176. a connection

  1177. for you

  1178. between

  1179. those two

  1180. as we

  1181. as God's

  1182. people

  1183. should

  1184. be desiring

  1185. his glory

  1186. the proclamation

  1187. of his

  1188. goodness

  1189. to us

  1190. we're building

  1191. a church

  1192. but we don't

  1193. build a church

  1194. with physical

  1195. stones

  1196. I'm not

  1197. talking about

  1198. this building

  1199. I hope

  1200. that you've

  1201. gotten that

  1202. here

  1203. that this

  1204. building

  1205. is not

  1206. the church

  1207. we're

  1208. the church

  1209. and so

  1210. we're

  1211. building up

  1212. a people

  1213. for his

  1214. praise

  1215. that is

  1216. the work

  1217. that's ahead

  1218. of us

  1219. and I

  1220. will probably

  1221. affectionately

  1222. call you

  1223. the remnant

  1224. a lot

  1225. over the

  1226. summer

  1227. we're those

  1228. that are

  1229. here now

  1230. I guess

  1231. our college

  1232. students have

  1233. been carried

  1234. off to exile

  1235. I don't

  1236. really know

  1237. if we're

  1238. going to

  1239. draw it

  1240. out quite

  1241. that far

  1242. but the

  1243. task has

  1244. been given

  1245. to us

  1246. to build

  1247. to display

  1248. God's

  1249. glory

  1250. we are

  1251. now the

  1252. visible

  1253. display

  1254. of God's

  1255. goodness

  1256. of his

  1257. character

  1258. in the

  1259. world

  1260. so there's

  1261. a great

  1262. connection

  1263. between the

  1264. two

  1265. and we can

  1266. learn and

  1267. glean so

  1268. much about

  1269. God's

  1270. character

  1271. to us

  1272. and the

  1273. work that

  1274. we ought

  1275. to be

  1276. doing

  1277. together

  1278. as we

  1279. look at

  1280. the book

  1281. of Nehemiah

  1282. first

  1283. Peter

  1284. chapter

  1285. two

  1286. Peter

  1287. speaks

  1288. of us

  1289. as

  1290. living

  1291. stones

  1292. who's

  1293. the

  1294. chief

  1295. cornerstone

  1296. Christ

  1297. right

  1298. this

  1299. this

  1300. imagery

  1301. of the

  1302. building

  1303. right

  1304. we're

  1305. chosen

  1306. and

  1307. precious

  1308. and we're

  1309. being built

  1310. up

  1311. as a

  1312. spiritual

  1313. house

  1314. it's

  1315. timely

  1316. for us

  1317. to be

  1318. studying

  1319. this

  1320. together

  1321. and

  1322. then

  1323. fourthly

  1324. I want

  1325. to exalt

  1326. the person

  1327. and the

  1328. work

  1329. of Jesus

  1330. Christ

  1331. which

  1332. all good

  1333. preaching

  1334. does

  1335. I want

  1336. to exalt

  1337. the person

  1338. and the

  1339. work

  1340. of Jesus

  1341. Christ

  1342. now

  1343. how is

  1344. it

  1345. exactly

  1346. that we're

  1347. going to

  1348. do that

  1349. in the

  1350. book

  1351. of

  1352. Nehemiah

  1353. the name

  1354. Jesus

  1355. Christ

  1356. is never

  1357. mentioned

  1358. in these

  1359. pages

  1360. don't know

  1361. he's not

  1362. on the

  1363. scene

  1364. yet

  1365. we don't

  1366. know

  1367. this

  1368. to be

  1369. the

  1370. case

  1371. turn

  1372. with

  1373. me

  1374. to

  1375. Luke

    Luke 24 chapter mention

  1376. chapter

  1377. 24

  1378. I lose

  1379. men

  1380. who

  1381. stand

  1382. in

  1383. pulpits

  1384. or

  1385. given

  1386. positions

  1387. of

  1388. power

  1389. to

  1390. preach

  1391. and

  1392. they

  1393. don't

  1394. preach

  1395. Christ

  1396. they

  1397. preach

  1398. tips

  1399. for

  1400. your

  1401. life

  1402. little

  1403. ways

  1404. you

  1405. can

  1406. better

  1407. manage

  1408. your

  1409. business

  1410. we're

  1411. to

  1412. preach

  1413. Christ

  1414. verse

  1415. 13

  1416. chapter

  1417. 24

  1418. this

  1419. is after

  1420. the

  1421. resurrection

  1422. that

  1423. very

  1424. day

  1425. two

  1426. of

  1427. them

  1428. disciples

  1429. were

  1430. going

  1431. to

  1432. a

  1433. village

  1434. named

  1435. Emmaus

  1436. about

  1437. seven

  1438. miles

  1439. from

  1440. Jerusalem

  1441. and

  1442. they

  1443. were

  1444. talking

  1445. with

  1446. each

  1447. other

  1448. about

  1449. all

  1450. these

  1451. things

  1452. that

  1453. had

  1454. happened

  1455. when

  1456. they

  1457. were

  1458. talking

  1459. and

  1460. discussing

  1461. together

  1462. Jesus

  1463. himself

  1464. drew

  1465. near

  1466. and

  1467. went

  1468. with

  1469. them

  1470. but

  1471. their

  1472. eyes

  1473. were

  1474. kept

  1475. from

  1476. recognizing

  1477. them

  1478. and

  1479. he

  1480. said

  1481. to

  1482. them

  1483. what

  1484. is

  1485. this

  1486. conversation

  1487. that

  1488. you

  1489. are

  1490. having

  1491. with

  1492. each

  1493. other

  1494. as

  1495. you

  1496. walk

  1497. this

  1498. must

  1499. have

  1500. been

  1501. a

  1502. very

  1503. looking

  1504. back

  1505. on

  1506. it

  1507. for

  1508. them

  1509. a

  1510. very

  1511. comical

  1512. conversation

  1513. what

  1514. is this

  1515. conversation

  1516. that

  1517. you

  1518. were

  1519. having

  1520. with

  1521. each

  1522. other

  1523. as

  1524. you

  1525. walk

  1526. and

  1527. they

  1528. stood

  1529. still

  1530. looking

  1531. sad

  1532. then

  1533. one

  1534. of

  1535. them

  1536. named

  1537. Cleopas

  1538. answered

  1539. him

  1540. are

  1541. you

  1542. the

  1543. only

  1544. visitor

  1545. to

  1546. Jerusalem

  1547. who

  1548. does

  1549. not

  1550. know

  1551. the

  1552. things

  1553. that

  1554. have

  1555. happened

  1556. there

  1557. in

  1558. these

  1559. days

  1560. can you

  1561. imagine

  1562. how he

  1563. felt

  1564. after

  1565. realizing

  1566. who

  1567. he

  1568. been

  1569. talking

  1570. to

  1571. yep

  1572. a little bit

  1573. of rhetoric

  1574. there

  1575. verse 19

  1576. and he

  1577. said to

  1578. them

  1579. what

  1580. things

  1581. and they

  1582. said

  1583. to him

  1584. concerning

  1585. Jesus

  1586. of

  1587. Nazareth

  1588. a man

  1589. who

  1590. was

  1591. a

  1592. prophet

  1593. mighty

  1594. in

  1595. deed

  1596. and

  1597. word

  1598. before

  1599. God

  1600. and

  1601. all

  1602. the

  1603. people

  1604. and

  1605. how

  1606. our

  1607. chief

  1608. priests

  1609. and

  1610. rulers

  1611. delivered

  1612. him

  1613. up

  1614. to

  1615. be

  1616. condemned

  1617. to

  1618. death

  1619. and

  1620. crucified

  1621. him

  1622. but

  1623. we

  1624. had

  1625. hoped

  1626. that

  1627. he

  1628. was

  1629. the

  1630. one

  1631. to

  1632. redeem

  1633. Israel

  1634. yes

  1635. and

  1636. besides

  1637. all

  1638. this

  1639. it

  1640. is

  1641. now

  1642. and

  1643. enter

  1644. into

  1645. his

  1646. glory

  1647. so

  1648. notice

  1649. here

  1650. he

  1651. corrects

  1652. them

  1653. he

  1654. rebukes

  1655. them

  1656. he

  1657. calls

  1658. them

  1659. foolish

  1660. slow

  1661. of

  1662. heart

  1663. to

  1664. believe

  1665. all

  1666. that

  1667. the

  1668. prophets

  1669. have

  1670. spoken

  1671. and

  1672. he's

  1673. referring

  1674. here

  1675. to

  1676. everything

  1677. Old

  1678. Testament

  1679. everything

  1680. up

  1681. to

  1682. this

  1683. point

  1684. he's

  1685. saying

  1686. to

  1687. them

  1688. you

  1689. had

  1690. me

  1691. you

  1692. had

  1693. this

  1694. you

  1695. had

  1696. the

  1697. very

  1698. revelation

  1699. of

  1700. Jesus

  1701. Christ

  1702. coming

  1703. and

  1704. you've

  1705. missed

  1706. it

  1707. verse

  1708. 27

  1709. and

  1710. beginning

  1711. with

  1712. Moses

  1713. and

  1714. the

  1715. things

  1716. concerning

  1717. himself

  1718. boy

  1719. I

  1720. wish

  1721. we

  1722. had

  1723. the

  1724. record

  1725. of

  1726. that

  1727. that

  1728. would

  1729. that

  1730. would

  1731. make

  1732. my

  1733. job

  1734. at

  1735. Nehemiah

  1736. a lot

  1737. easier

  1738. if I

  1739. could

  1740. have

  1741. Jesus

  1742. Christ

  1743. commentary

  1744. on

  1745. the

  1746. book

  1747. of

  1748. Nehemiah

  1749. right

  1750. a

  1751. wonderful

  1752. thing

  1753. for

  1754. some

  1755. reason

  1756. it's

  1757. excluded

  1758. here

  1759. um

  1760. dependence

  1761. on

  1762. the

  1763. spirit

  1764. so

  1765. that's

  1766. my

  1767. answer

  1768. to

  1769. that

  1770. verse

  1771. 28

  1772. so

  1773. they

  1774. drew

  1775. near

  1776. to

  1777. the

  1778. village

  1779. to

  1780. which

  1781. they

  1782. were

  1783. going

  1784. he

  1785. acted

  1786. as

  1787. if

  1788. he

  1789. was

  1790. going

  1791. farther

  1792. but

  1793. they

  1794. urged

  1795. him

  1796. strongly

  1797. saying

  1798. stay

  1799. with

  1800. us

  1801. for

  1802. it is

  1803. toward

  1804. evening

  1805. and

  1806. the

  1807. day

  1808. is

  1809. now

  1810. far

  1811. spent

  1812. so

  1813. he

  1814. went

  1815. in

  1816. to

  1817. stay

  1818. with

  1819. him

  1820. when

  1821. he

  1822. was

  1823. at

  1824. table

  1825. with

  1826. him

  1827. he

  1828. took

  1829. the

  1830. bread

  1831. and

  1832. blessed

  1833. and

  1834. broke

  1835. it

  1836. and

  1837. gave

  1838. it

  1839. to

  1840. them

  1841. and

  1842. their

  1843. eyes

  1844. were

  1845. opened

  1846. and

  1847. they

  1848. recognized

  1849. him

  1850. and

  1851. he

  1852. !

  1853. said

  1854. to

  1855. !

  1856. each

  1857. other

  1858. did

  1859. not

  1860. our

  1861. hearts

  1862. burn

  1863. within

  1864. us

  1865. while

  1866. we

  1867. talked

  1868. to

  1869. us

  1870. on

  1871. the

  1872. road

  1873. while

  1874. he

  1875. opened

  1876. to

  1877. us

  1878. the

  1879. scriptures

  1880. and

  1881. they

  1882. rose

  1883. that

  1884. same

  1885. hour

  1886. and

  1887. returned

  1888. to

  1889. Jerusalem

  1890. and

  1891. they

  1892. found

  1893. the

  1894. eleven

  1895. and

  1896. those

  1897. who

  1898. were

  1899. with

  1900. them

  1901. gathered

  1902. together

  1903. saying

  1904. the

  1905. Lord

  1906. has

  1907. risen

  1908. indeed

  1909. and

  1910. has

  1911. appeared

  1912. to

  1913. Simon

  1914. and

  1915. they

  1916. told

  1917. what

  1918. had

  1919. happened

  1920. on

  1921. the

  1922. road

  1923. and

  1924. how

  1925. he

  1926. !

  1927. looked

  1928. down

  1929. at

  1930. verse

  1931. me

  1932. and

  1933. the

  1934. law

  1935. of

  1936. Moses

  1937. and

  1938. the

  1939. prophets

  1940. and

  1941. the

  1942. Psalms

  1943. must

  1944. be

  1945. fulfilled

  1946. he

  1947. said

  1948. remember

  1949. I

  1950. told

  1951. you

  1952. I

  1953. would

  1954. be

  1955. the

  1956. fulfillment

  1957. of

  1958. all

  1959. these

  1960. things

  1961. including

  1962. the

  1963. promises

  1964. in

  1965. Nehemiah

  1966. right

  1967. verse

  1968. 45

  1969. then

  1970. he

  1971. opened

  1972. their

  1973. minds

  1974. !

  1975. to

  1976. understand

  1977. the

  1978. scriptures

  1979. he

  1980. opened

  1981. their

  1982. minds

  1983. !

  1984. to

  1985. understand

  1986. the

  1987. scriptures

  1988. and

  1989. recognize

  1990. the

  1991. point

  1992. here

  1993. being

  1994. to

  1995. understand

  1996. the

  1997. scriptures

  1998. as

  1999. they

  2000. speak

  2001. of

  2002. him

  2003. because

  2004. every

  2005. single

  2006. page

  2007. every

  2008. word

  2009. every

  2010. bit

  2011. of

  2012. punctuation

  2013. speaks

  2014. of

  2015. Jesus

  2016. Christ

  2017. until

  2018. we

  2019. read

  2020. the

  2021. Old

  2022. Testament

  2023. scriptures

  2024. with a

  2025. view

  2026. to

  2027. Christ

  2028. looking

  2029. for

  2030. him

  2031. in

  2032. this

  2033. way

  2034. we

  2035. are

  2036. not

  2037. reading

  2038. it

  2039. properly

  2040. we

  2041. have

  2042. missed

  2043. the

  2044. point

  2045. if

  2046. we

  2047. say

  2048. look

  2049. at

  2050. David

  2051. what

  2052. a

  2053. brave

  2054. man

  2055. willing

  2056. to

  2057. go

  2058. out

  2059. and

  2060. face

  2061. Goliath

  2062. we

  2063. should

  2064. be

  2065. brave

  2066. like

  2067. him

  2068. there

  2069. a

  2070. lesson

  2071. there

  2072. certainly

  2073. we

  2074. should

  2075. trust

  2076. in

  2077. God

  2078. in

  2079. that

  2080. way

  2081. but

  2082. until

  2083. we

  2084. see

  2085. that

  2086. David

  2087. is

  2088. a

  2089. type

  2090. of

  2091. Christ

  2092. coming

  2093. on

  2094. our

  2095. behalf

  2096. to

  2097. conquer

  2098. sin

  2099. and

  2100. death

  2101. we've

  2102. missed

  2103. it

  2104. we've

  2105. missed

  2106. the

  2107. ultimate

  2108. point

  2109. and

  2110. we're

  2111. not

  2112. really

  2113. reading

  2114. the

  2115. Old

  2116. Testament

  2117. properly

  2118. missed

  2119. we

  2120. we've

  2121. preached

  2122. Jesus

  2123. Christ

  2124. even

  2125. when

  2126. we're

  2127. studying

  2128. Nehemiah

  2129. and

  2130. I want

  2131. to

  2132. show

  2133. you

  2134. how

  2135. that's

  2136. possible

  2137. I've

  2138. got

  2139. a lot

  2140. of

  2141. work

  2142. to do

  2143. in

  2144. that

  2145. way

  2146. but

  2147. I hope

  2148. that

  2149. we'll

  2150. exalt

  2151. the

  2152. personal

  2153. work

  2154. of

  2155. Christ

  2156. together

  2157. let me

  2158. read to

  2159. you a

  2160. quote

  2161. from

  2162. Charles

  2163. Spurgeon

  2164. on this

  2165. matter

  2166. from

  2167. every

  2168. town

  2169. village

  2170. and

  2171. little

  2172. hamlet

  2173. in

  2174. England

  2175. wherever

  2176. it may

  2177. be

  2178. there is

  2179. a road

  2180. to

  2181. London

  2182. and

  2183. so

  2184. from

  2185. every

  2186. text

  2187. in

  2188. scripture

  2189. there is

  2190. a road

  2191. to

  2192. the

  2193. metropolis

  2194. of

  2195. the

  2196. scriptures

  2197. that

  2198. is

  2199. Christ

  2200. your

  2201. business

  2202. is

  2203. when

  2204. you

  2205. get

  2206. to

  2207. a

  2208. text

  2209. to

  2210. say

  2211. now

  2212. what

  2213. is

  2214. the

  2215. road

  2216. to

  2217. Christ

  2218. and

  2219. then

  2220. preach

  2221. a

  2222. sermon

  2223. or

  2224. study

  2225. it

  2226. in

  2227. that

  2228. way

  2229. if

  2230. you're

  2231. not

  2232. a

  2233. !

  2234. a

  2235. !

  2236. running

  2237. along

  2238. the

  2239. road

  2240. towards

  2241. the

  2242. great

  2243. metropolis

  2244. Christ

  2245. and

  2246. that's

  2247. what

  2248. I

  2249. hope

  2250. to

  2251. accomplish

  2252. as

  2253. we

  2254. come

  2255. together

  2256. to

  2257. this

  2258. study

  2259. to

  2260. show

  2261. you

  2262. how

  2263. it

  2264. is

  2265. that

  2266. it's

  2267. timely

  2268. for

  2269. us

  2270. for

  2271. the

  2272. building

  2273. of

  2274. the

  2275. glory

  2276. of

  2277. God

  2278. to

  2279. have

  2280. you

  2281. have

  2282. a

  2283. deeper

  2284. appreciation

  2285. of

  2286. the

  2287. scriptures

  2288. which

  2289. will

  2290. accomplish

  2291. primarily

  2292. through

  2293. getting

  2294. you

  2295. to

  2296. see

  2297. that

  2298. every

  2299. single

  2300. word

  2301. speaks

  2302. of

  2303. Christ

  2304. let's

  2305. pray

  2306. together

  2307. !
