  1. Take out your copy of God's Word and turn to the Old Testament book of Nehemiah.

  2. Last week we began our new study as we've concluded our study of the book of Romans.

  3. !

  4. A lot of history you presented last week and I don't know that everyone's going to remember all those details throughout our study together.

  5. And I'll do my best to kind of pull back in the necessary parts of it as we go along.

  6. But I saw the benefit of that and as I sat down to write it, you must know that I'm not a fantastic writer.

  7. And so I copied and pasted this.

  8. Gave credit where credit is due.

  9. This is an introduction by John MacArthur as well as his outline.

  10. And then I included in it the four objectives, the things that I want to see accomplished in our time together in Nehemiah.

  11. So that's just there for you, for your resource.

  12. If you didn't get one, we'll have them out in the hallway on your way out.

  13. You can certainly pick one of those up.

  14. Let's begin this morning by reading, starting in verse 1 of chapter 1 of Nehemiah.

  15. The words of Nehemiah, the son of Hakaliah.

  16. Now it happened in the month of Kislev in the twentieth year as I was in Susa, the capital.

  17. That Hananiah, one of my brothers, came with certain men from Judah.

  18. And I asked them concerning the Jews who escaped, who had survived the exile, and concerning Jerusalem.

  19. And they said to me,

  20. The remnant there in the province who had survived the exile is in great trouble and shame.

  21. The wall of Jerusalem is broken down and its gates are destroyed by fire.

  22. As soon as I heard these words, I sat down and wept and mourned for days.

  23. And I continued fasting and praying before the God of heaven.

  24. And I said,

  25. O Lord God of heaven, the great and awesome God, who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments.

  26. Let your ear be attentive and your eyes open to hear the prayer of your servant that I now pray before you, day and night, for the people of Israel, your servants.

  27. Confessing the sins of the people of Israel, which we have sinned against you, even I and my father's house have sinned.

  28. We have acted very corruptly against you and have not kept the commandments, the statutes, and the rules that you commanded your servant Moses.

  29. Remember the word that you commanded your servant Moses, saying,

  30. If you are unfaithful, I will scatter you among the peoples.

  31. But if you return to me and keep my commandments and do them, though your outcasts are in the uttermost parts of heaven, from there I will gather them and bring them to the place that I have chosen to make my name dwell there.

  32. They are your servants and your people whom you have redeemed by your great power and by your strong hand.

  33. O Lord, let your ear be attentive to the prayer of your servant and to the prayer of your servants who delight to fear your name and give success to your servant today and grant him mercy in the sight of this man.

  34. Now I was cupbearer to the king.

  35. Let's pray together.

  36. Father God, we thank you for the great blessing of your word.

  37. It is a tremendous grace to us.

  38. And I pray that today, by your spirit, you will apply it to our hearts.

  39. That we won't just hear words, give some mental recognition to them, but that they will in fact change us.

  40. That we will become more like your son as a result of hearing the preached word this day.

  41. And we pray this in Christ's name.

  42. Amen.

  43. And Nehemiah, you'll notice here at the beginning, the circumstance is being set up.

  44. He's cupbearer for the king Artaxerxes, the king of Persia.

  45. He's quite a ways.

  46. He's in the city of Susa, which is where the king was wintering at the time.

  47. Many, many days journey from Judah.

  48. And his brother comes to visit him to say that the city is in calamity.

  49. It's shameful because the exiles have returned from captivity.

  50. Babylonia has flipped over to be a Persian rule.

  51. Persian king has allowed them to go back.

  52. And they've yet to build the wall.

  53. It's in shambles.

  54. They're a weak people.

  55. And therefore, the name of God has been made weak.

  56. And this is why he's distraught.

  57. Verse 4, this is why he sits down and he weeps and he mourns for days.

  58. It's very, very heavy on his heart, the circumstance here.

  59. And Nehemiah wants to see something reconciled in this way.

  60. He wants to see the wall built.

  61. He wants the glory of God to be proclaimed amongst his people.

  62. Remember that the visible outworking of God's glory at this time are his people, the state,

  63. the well-being of his people.

  64. And the fact that they've been returned from exile for so long and they're still in shambles

  65. is a great affront to God's glory.

  66. And this so presses on Nehemiah as he has such a zeal for God's glory that he mourns the condition of Israel.

  67. Now, we get to clues later on.

  68. We don't know at this point as we begin to read about his prayer.

  69. But we do find out later that the ambition that's laid upon him is to actually go back to Judah

  70. and to begin to build the wall, to lead the reconstruction.

  71. But you need to understand the task that was ahead of him before we move on.

  72. He's serving as the cupbearer of King Artaxerxes.

  73. Artaxerxes, you can read in Ezra chapter 4, has put out an edict to stop the building of the wall.

    Ezra 4 chapter mention

  74. The wall was being built some 20 years earlier.

  75. There was an effort being put forward to do it, but some people of the land, as they're called in Ezra,

  76. some people who were not Israelites,

  77. seeing that the glory of the Almighty God could supplant the glory of King Artaxerxes,

  78. write a letter to him.

  79. And in response, he issues an edict, forcing the building of the wall to stop.

  80. So here is Nehemiah serving under a king who has already made a command that the wall should not be built.

  81. And in this day, for a king to reverse an edict would be to say that he's powerless,

  82. that he was unwise to begin with.

  83. And it did not happen often that this would take place.

  84. Know also that the wall itself, we'll talk more about this in some of the coming weeks,

  85. was four and a half miles in circumference, 15 feet tall and 15 feet thick.

  86. It was a huge, huge project that was ahead of him.

  87. And so what do we find Nehemiah doing?

  88. He prays.

  89. And I have to tell you honestly, as I searched out what we ought to do next,

  90. moving beyond Romans,

  91. the impression on my mind for Nehemiah was that it was about a group of people

  92. building something to the glory of God.

  93. That's one of my desires, that we will see as a church,

  94. that that's what we're here to do together.

  95. That it's going to be a hard work, that we're going to have to press into it.

  96. I did not realize, having read Nehemiah numerous times,

  97. what an incredible book of prayer that it is.

  98. Nehemiah begins with prayer.

  99. Charles Spurgeon once said,

  100. if any of you should ask me for an epitome, a perfect example of the Christian religion,

  101. I should say that it is one word, prayer.

  102. I learned a new Latin phrase today.

  103. And I don't use Latin to just sound really intelligent.

  104. I think I know maybe ten Latin phrases now at this point.

  105. But I want to kind of plant this one in your mind.

  106. And it is sine qua non.

  107. S-I-N-E-Q-U-A-N-O-N, if you're taking notes.

  108. Sine qua non.

  109. Which means, without which, nothing.

  110. Prayer is not just a part of our Christian living.

  111. It's not a little thing we attach alongside our efforts.

  112. But it is the thing without which we can accomplish nothing.

  113. Sine qua non.

  114. Without which, nothing.

  115. Prayer is vital to any effort for the kingdom.

  116. Now, we all, I'm sure, grew up and have heard phrases like,

  117. Prayer is just talking to God.

  118. Trying to make it approachable.

  119. Something that even I could do.

  120. Prayer is just talking to God.

  121. And many of us have grown up with kind of a buddy Jesus mentality.

  122. You've seen the t-shirts, Jesus is my homeboy.

  123. He's my pal.

  124. I come alongside and I just chit-chat with him.

  125. About my life and what's going on.

  126. And don't be mistaken, certainly Jesus instructed us to pray for our daily bread.

  127. He's concerned about the details of our life.

  128. He cares about even the smallest of things.

  129. But we as Christians too often pray paltry prayers.

  130. Trite.

  131. Meaningless at times.

  132. Prayers.

  133. Think about many of the prayer meetings you've probably attended.

  134. And the vast majority of the requests have nothing to do with the kingdom of God or the souls of men.

  135. But are typically about health.

  136. Again, not that that's a bad thing.

  137. Don't catch the wrong end of the stick, so to speak here.

  138. God cares about those things.

  139. But how we speak to him matters.

  140. And praise God that there's room for maturation in our prayer.

  141. That we can grow up in our prayer process.

  142. And it would be wise of us to take an example.

  143. Take a look at how it is we are instructed to pray.

  144. Recognize that the apostles, men who were Jews, who had spent their life praying,

  145. asked Jesus,

  146. Lord, teach us to pray.

  147. Did Jesus respond to them?

  148. Prayer's just talking to God.

  149. Guys, do it.

  150. No, he gave them a very clear example of what prayer should look like in their lives.

  151. The men have been getting together on Friday morning and spending some time praying together.

  152. And I told them this last Friday that I'm so thankful to lead a group of men that pray God-honoring,

  153. biblically founded prayers.

  154. What an absolute blessing that is.

  155. We should be maturing in the way that we pray.

  156. And here is a great example of this.

  157. I, since a very early age with Cademan, who's three now.

  158. You guys, if you know me, I have another son named Judah.

  159. He's downstairs asleep right now.

  160. He's one.

  161. But I tell them that I love him with my hand.

  162. A little sign language.

  163. And I say, I love you with my hand.

  164. I love you.

  165. And it lets me do that when I can't speak to him.

  166. Quiet times, I can do that.

  167. And Cade gets it.

  168. He absolutely knows what I'm trying to tell him.

  169. But he has a really difficult time forming that shape with his hand.

  170. I've tried to show him how to do it.

  171. I've tried to show him how to hold his fingers down, hold his fingers up.

  172. He just can't quite pull it off.

  173. And so Cade's version of I love you is this.

  174. Right?

  175. Which I've just taken to mean I love you too.

  176. Right?

  177. He just gives it back.

  178. Recently, he's altered it to I love you with three fingers like this.

  179. Let's see what you can.

  180. Cade, man.

  181. I love you.

  182. There we go.

  183. There we go.

  184. Three fingers.

  185. Right?

  186. That's great, buddy.

  187. Thanks.

  188. Right?

  189. Is God satisfied simply with the intention of our prayers?

  190. And I would say to you, no.

  191. Right?

  192. If Cade, man, the rest of his life tells me that he loves me with words insufficient for that

  193. or a hand symbol that just doesn't quite mean that.

  194. Cade continues to do this.

  195. At some point, I'm going to go, Cade, man.

  196. That means peace, pal.

  197. It doesn't mean I love you.

  198. Right?

  199. Like, it's time.

  200. It's time for you to shift the way you tell me that you love me.

  201. Right?

  202. We should be maturing in the same way.

  203. I want to show you four observations concerning Nehemiah's prayer.

  204. And I have to tell you that probably the most important thing we can learn today,

  205. the most important thing we can learn today,

  206. is that Nehemiah had a holy ambition.

  207. He had a task ahead of him,

  208. which all of us have ahead of us as Christians.

  209. As ministers of the gospel,

  210. we all have tasks laid out before us.

  211. God has prepared good works for us in advance.

  212. The most important thing that we should learn today

  213. is that it should be preceded by prayer.

  214. Right?

  215. Sine qua non.

  216. Without which nothing.

  217. Right?

  218. Prayer should precede all of that.

  219. So I want you to keep that in mind

  220. as we're moving quickly past that point

  221. to talk about Nehemiah's prayer itself.

  222. Right?

  223. If I had to say one thing to you this morning,

  224. I have already said it.

  225. Right?

  226. Prayer must precede our work.

  227. Right?

  228. But I want to bring you four observations this morning.

  229. Firstly,

  230. Nehemiah prayed persistently.

  231. Nehemiah prayed persistently.

  232. So notice in verse 4,

  233. he sits down,

  234. he weeps and he mourns for days,

  235. and he says,

  236. and I continued fasting and praying

  237. before the God of heaven.

  238. We see also later on

  239. that he prayed down in verse 6,

  240. day and night.

  241. So we see an example of his prayer here.

  242. Right?

  243. We see maybe a noted time,

  244. but this was the thrust of his praying

  245. and it happened consistently.

  246. It's important to know

  247. that this report of what was going on in Judah

  248. was brought to him in the month of Kislev,

  249. which is approximately November, December.

  250. When does he actually get to speak

  251. to our exerxes in chapter 2?

  252. In the month of Nisan,

  253. which is approximately March or April.

  254. So catch that,

  255. roughly four months has passed in this time.

  256. He recognizes this great task

  257. that's ahead of him

  258. and he sets himself to prayer.

  259. He says here,

  260. he continues,

  261. and he does it day and night.

  262. There's a fervency here in prayer

  263. because Nehemiah recognizes

  264. that the task ahead of him

  265. is not something he can accomplish on his own.

  266. So he is persistent in his prayer.

  267. Believe that he understood

  268. what John 15, 5 says

  269. when Jesus says,

  270. apart from me,

  271. you can do nothing.

  272. This is a lesson for us.

  273. So often we rush into things.

  274. We don't ask God

  275. to move and to act,

  276. to come along at all

  277. for the ride.

  278. I do this all the time.

  279. I use my business savvy

  280. to try to get things accomplished.

  281. And apart from prayer,

  282. I can accomplish nothing.

  283. I try in my sermon preparation

  284. to be incredibly prayerful

  285. before I ever even come

  286. to the text for the week,

  287. try to pray God's blessing on it

  288. that he'll open up my mind,

  289. help me to see,

  290. help me to study,

  291. find the right resources

  292. to pull it all together.

  293. And I'll tell you this week,

  294. I did that well.

  295. I let this text run through me.

  296. And then yesterday morning

  297. when I sat down

  298. to take all those things

  299. that were running around

  300. in my head and in my heart

  301. and put them on a piece of paper

  302. so that I could make

  303. an organized presentation

  304. of what was going on

  305. here in this text,

  306. I just rushed right into it.

  307. And I struggled.

  308. This is like the fourth outline

  309. I wrote of this.

  310. If you noticed that I double checked

  311. when I said I had four points,

  312. I wanted to make sure

  313. that I actually did have four points

  314. and I didn't change that

  315. at some point along the way.

  316. And I recognized yesterday

  317. that just the conviction

  318. that I had prayerfully prepared

  319. my mind and my heart,

  320. but I didn't prayerfully prepare

  321. to even put the notes down.

  322. I had to stop

  323. and I had to repent

  324. and ask God's blessing

  325. on even just typing it out

  326. on a piece of paper.

  327. We can do nothing apart from God.

  328. And there's a patience here.

  329. We've got Nehemiah.

  330. He's weeping and he's mourning for days.

  331. He is heartbroken over this.

  332. And yet for months he prays.

  333. He persists in prayer.

  334. Young people,

  335. I know your life just feels

  336. like it's passing by,

  337. that you've got to get in the mix

  338. so quick.

  339. You have such a desire

  340. to do mighty things for God

  341. and I pat you on the back for that.

  342. But be patient in prayer.

  343. Seek to know God's will

  344. for your life in prayer.

  345. So firstly,

  346. Nehemiah prayed persistently.

  347. Secondly,

  348. Nehemiah begins his prayer

  349. by proclaiming God's character.

  350. He roots his very prayer

  351. in who God is.

  352. Look at verse 5.

  353. He says,

  354. And I said,

  355. O Lord, God of heaven,

  356. the great and awesome God

  357. who keeps covenant

  358. and steadfast love

  359. with those who love him

  360. and keep his commandments.

  361. He ties it all in

  362. to who God is.

  363. His plea with God to act

  364. is requisite on God's character.

  365. He says,

  366. O Lord, God of heaven,

  367. in the Hebrew,

  368. this was an expression

  369. of God's sovereignty.

  370. That if God is the God of heaven,

  371. he is therefore the God

  372. of all kingdoms,

  373. the whole universe,

  374. God reigns over.

  375. This was a phrase

  376. that became especially precious

  377. to the Jews

  378. as they went off into exile.

  379. As they began to understand

  380. that God was not just

  381. the God of Israel

  382. reigning over them,

  383. providential in their lives,

  384. but also of the entire world.

  385. They saw the predicted judgment

  386. come to pass

  387. through the Babylonians.

  388. They saw that God

  389. used even wicked men

  390. to bring judgment upon them.

  391. They came to know

  392. this O Lord,

  393. God of heaven,

  394. that he is in fact

  395. sovereign over all things.

  396. Isn't it interesting

  397. in Matthew chapter 6,

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  398. when the disciples

  399. asked Jesus how to pray,

  400. he begins,

  401. Our Father in heaven.

  402. This is the Greek version

  403. of this Hebrew phrase.

  404. Our Father in heaven.

  405. Him who reigns over all.

  406. Certainly,

  407. Nehemiah,

  408. as he's versed in his scriptures,

  409. would have been familiar

  410. with Proverbs 21.1.

  411. As he's thinking about

  412. approaching King Artaxerxes,

  413. the king,

  414. and asking him

  415. to go back on an edict.

  416. Asking him to not be him

  417. is essentially

  418. what he's asking him to do.

  419. Proverbs 21.1 says,

  420. The king's heart

  421. is a stream of water

  422. in the hand of the Lord.

  423. He turns it

  424. wherever he will.

  425. He begins his prayer

  426. proclaiming that God

  427. is the great sovereign

  428. of all things.

  429. And he calls him

  430. the great

  431. and the awesome God.

  432. Great speaking of his power.

  433. His ability to do anything

  434. that he wishes to do.

  435. To set his mind

  436. to do it

  437. and he will,

  438. in fact,

  439. accomplish it.

  440. And he calls him

  441. the awesome God.

  442. Here's a misused phrase

  443. in our language,

  444. is it not?

  445. It's kind of entered

  446. into our vernacular

  447. as something maybe

  448. just a bit cooler

  449. than cool.

  450. I misuse awesome

  451. all the time.

  452. The word awesome

  453. simply means

  454. to inspire awe,

  455. but it also carries with it

  456. the idea of dread.

  457. A fear of something.

  458. Something that's

  459. so mighty

  460. and so big.

  461. In the case of God,

  462. because of his majesty

  463. and his glory,

  464. that you shrivel at it.

  465. That you shrink

  466. at the awesomeness

  467. of God.

  468. I was trying to think

  469. of a practical example

  470. of a day-to-day thing,

  471. and I don't experience

  472. things that really

  473. could properly be called

  474. awesome,

  475. although I think

  476. I call things awesome

  477. all the time.

  478. But I thought about

  479. when I was a child,

  480. I grew up in Arizona

  481. and my dad took me

  482. to fish below Hoover Dam

  483. at a place called

  484. Lee's Ferry.

  485. Hoover Dam,

  486. 700 plus feet tall.

  487. And we got to take

  488. a motorboat,

  489. I got to drive it,

  490. I was like eight,

  491. which is the coolest thing

  492. I've ever done,

  493. probably,

  494. in this cliff face,

  495. avoiding the sandbar.

  496. It was really fun.

  497. But we went up

  498. to the bottom

  499. of Hoover Dam

  500. and we began

  501. to fish down the river

  502. from that point.

  503. And I would say

  504. in human terms

  505. that was pretty awesome,

  506. being at the base

  507. of that 700 foot dam

  508. and the cliffs around it

  509. are the same.

  510. Awesome.

  511. But a better picture

  512. of that is

  513. what if that dam

  514. was beginning

  515. to crumble before me,

  516. right,

  517. and we're in the speedboat

  518. at the bottom

  519. and I know that

  520. at any moment

  521. the water's gonna

  522. burst forth

  523. and come rushing

  524. down that canyon.

  525. That maybe is the feeling

  526. that you might have,

  527. right,

  528. of the word awesome,

  529. the way in which

  530. we should think

  531. of our God.

  532. Right?

  533. That he inspires

  534. that kind of awe.

  535. This is how Nehemiah

  536. begins his prayer.

  537. Recognize that in verse 11,

  538. as you think about that,

  539. you think,

  540. wait a minute,

  541. are we supposed to dread God?

  542. Is that the way

  543. we're supposed to react

  544. to him?

  545. In verse 11,

  546. Nehemiah says,

  547. talks of his servants

  548. who delight to fear

  549. his name.

  550. They delight in the fear

  551. of God's name.

  552. He is this awesome God,

  553. sovereign,

  554. all-powerful,

  555. able to accomplish

  556. whatever it is

  557. that he sets himself to.

  558. Right?

  559. That's the type of dread

  560. that we're talking about here.

  561. And then he goes on

  562. to talk about his covenant

  563. and his steadfast love.

  564. He proclaims that God

  565. is immutable,

  566. meaning unchanging.

  567. Right?

  568. That if God has said

  569. he will do something,

  570. he keeps a covenant

  571. with his people,

  572. he makes a promise to them,

  573. that he will,

  574. in fact,

  575. carry it out.

  576. There's no changing our God.

  577. He is immutable.

  578. So Nehemiah begins his prayer

  579. by proclaiming God's character.

  580. And Nehemiah's prayer,

  581. thirdly,

  582. is motivated

  583. by God's promises.

  584. It's a nice connection there,

  585. right?

  586. We see that he praises God

  587. for his covenant

  588. and steadfast love,

  589. proclaims that,

  590. and then reminds him

  591. of his promises.

  592. We're doing a bit of a skip down here,

  593. but verses 8 through 10,

  594. and we'll come back up

  595. to verses 6 and 7.

  596. Right?

  597. Let's read that together.

  598. Remember the word

  599. that you commanded

  600. your servant Moses,

  601. saying,

  602. If you are unfaithful,

  603. I will scatter you

  604. among the peoples.

  605. But if you return to me

  606. and keep my commandments

  607. and do them,

  608. though your outcasts

  609. are in the uttermost

  610. parts of heaven,

  611. from there I will gather them

  612. and bring them to the place

  613. that I have chosen

  614. to make my name dwell there.

  615. They are your servants

  616. and your people

  617. whom you have redeemed

  618. by your great power

  619. and by your strong hand.

  620. Nehemiah's prayer

  621. is motivated

  622. by God's promises.

  623. Why would Nehemiah

  624. have any reason

  625. to think

  626. that God would

  627. bring him before

  628. King Artaxerxes

  629. and change the heart

  630. of this king

  631. to send him back

  632. to build an encampment,

  633. a fortress,

  634. against himself

  635. and write the bill

  636. for it?

  637. Why would Nehemiah

  638. ever think

  639. that could ever

  640. even be possible?

  641. It's because he knew

  642. God's promises.

  643. Verse 8 starts out,

  644. Remember.

  645. Now, he is praying.

  646. This is a record

  647. of a prayer,

  648. but don't think

  649. that he's being irreverent

  650. at this point.

  651. This language is a plea

  652. with God

  653. to enact his word.

  654. Right?

  655. Please do the things

  656. you said you would do.

  657. Right?

  658. And we see there

  659. this promise

  660. that was made.

  661. He's loosely quoting

  662. from Leviticus 26

  663. and Deuteronomy 4.

  664. He makes a covenant

  665. with his people

  666. that is conditional

  667. on their obedience.

  668. When they're disobedient,

  669. he judges them,

  670. sends them off

  671. at the hands

  672. of the Babylonians.

  673. But at that time,

  674. he says,

  675. if they will repent

  676. and turn back to me,

  677. I will restore them

  678. in their land.

  679. And this is the promise

  680. that Nehemiah

  681. is calling on God

  682. to fulfill.

  683. Arturo Zerdia,

  684. a pastor that I

  685. particularly appreciate,

  686. said,

  687. our Heavenly Father

  688. takes delight

  689. when we stake

  690. our confidence

  691. in Him.

  692. When we are so confident

  693. in His eternal character

  694. that we claim

  695. the promises

  696. He has made to us,

  697. God is pleased.

  698. Certainly,

  699. Nehemiah was familiar

  700. with Isaiah,

  701. the prophet.

  702. Chapter 43,

  703. verses 6 and 7,

  704. God says,

  705. I will say to the north,

  706. give up.

  707. And to the south,

  708. do not withhold.

  709. Bring my sons from afar

  710. and my daughters

  711. from the end of the earth,

  712. everyone who is called

  713. by my name.

  714. Now, this is pre-return,

  715. right?

  716. So we're quite a few years,

  717. some 90 years beyond that.

  718. But then certainly,

  719. Nehemiah understood

  720. that it goes on to say,

  721. whom I created

  722. for my glory,

  723. whom I formed

  724. and who I made.

  725. You see that

  726. as he begins to call

  727. on God in verse 10,

  728. they are your servants

  729. and your people

  730. whom you have redeemed

  731. by your great power

  732. and by your strong hand.

  733. They are a picture

  734. of your glory

  735. here on this earth.

  736. Act,

  737. restore,

  738. help us

  739. build

  740. the wall.

  741. Now, just out of curiosity,

  742. I got on the internet

  743. this week

  744. and I typed in

  745. how many promises

  746. does God make

  747. in the Bible?

  748. I found a lot of answers.

  749. My favorite one

  750. was from like a

  751. wiki answers

  752. or answers.com

  753. or something like that.

  754. And a person simply said,

  755. I have no idea

  756. but my father

  757. once counted them

  758. and said 7,487.

  759. I don't know.

  760. I don't know

  761. if that's a real number

  762. or not.

  763. I would presume

  764. it's probably getting close.

  765. I have no idea

  766. who this father is

  767. that counted

  768. these promises.

  769. But the scripture

  770. is riddled with them.

  771. They saturate

  772. this book.

  773. How many promises

  774. of God

  775. do you know?

  776. Fifty?

  777. Ten maybe?

  778. Can you think of a few?

  779. Five?

  780. One?

  781. Could it be

  782. that our prayers

  783. are paltry

  784. because we don't know

  785. what God has promised

  786. He will do?

  787. So we are not

  788. saturated

  789. in the scriptures

  790. the way we ought to be?

  791. The word of God

  792. and prayer

  793. are mutually dependent

  794. on one another.

  795. You cannot rightly

  796. understand the word of God

  797. apart from prayer

  798. and you cannot pray

  799. as you should

  800. without the promises

  801. of God's word.

  802. The two walk together

  803. hand in hand.

  804. So Nehemiah's prayer

  805. is motivated

  806. by God's promises.

  807. Fourthly,

  808. Nehemiah's prayer

  809. is humble

  810. and intercessory

  811. in nature.

  812. We're looking back up

  813. at verses 6

  814. and 7.

  815. He says,

  816. Let your ear

  817. be attentive

  818. and your eyes open

  819. to hear the prayer

  820. of your servant

  821. that I now pray

  822. before you

  823. day and night

  824. for the people

  825. of Israel,

  826. your servants,

  827. confessing the sins

  828. of the people of Israel

  829. which we have sinned

  830. against you.

  831. Even I

  832. and my father's house

  833. have sinned.

  834. We have acted

  835. very corruptly

  836. against you

  837. and have not kept

  838. the commandments,

  839. the statutes,

  840. and the rules

  841. that you commanded

  842. your servant,

  843. Moses.

  844. Notice that

  845. following Nehemiah's

  846. vision of God's character,

  847. immediately following it,

  848. he becomes very humble

  849. in his prayer.

  850. A vision of God's character

  851. will always

  852. make us painfully aware

  853. of our own shortcomings.

  854. When God shows up

  855. in all of His majesty,

  856. we become very,

  857. very aware

  858. of who we are.

  859. This is why

  860. all good praying

  861. begins with God's character.

  862. When we go to God,

  863. we need to recognize

  864. who He is

  865. and who we are.

  866. We're not going

  867. to talk to buddy Jesus.

  868. We're not chumming up

  869. next to Him

  870. to see what He may

  871. pull off on our behalf.

  872. He is God

  873. and we are not.

  874. But Isaiah,

  875. when he sees Jesus

  876. in all His glory,

  877. what does he say?

  878. Woe is me.

  879. Peter,

  880. when he finally,

  881. fully realizes

  882. that Jesus is the Messiah,

  883. says,

  884. depart from me, Lord,

  885. for I am a sinful man.

  886. John,

  887. when he has this vision

  888. of the resurrected Christ

  889. in chapter 1 of Revelation,

  890. he falls down on the ground

  891. like a dead man.

  892. This is the natural response

  893. to a proper view

  894. of God's character

  895. and it ought to be

  896. the way our prayers

  897. proceed along.

  898. Notice here

  899. Nehemiah's

  900. first person language.

  901. He says,

  902. I confess.

  903. We have sinned.

  904. I and my Father's house

  905. have sinned.

  906. We have acted

  907. very corruptly.

  908. It would have been easy,

  909. I think,

  910. at this point

  911. for Nehemiah

  912. to pray that

  913. those other Jews

  914. for the sins

  915. that they committed

  916. in the years past

  917. that caused them

  918. to come into

  919. Babylonian exile

  920. would be really easy

  921. to push off,

  922. to press it onto

  923. the others.

  924. But yet,

  925. here he takes it

  926. upon himself.

  927. You remember

  928. at the fall

  929. after Adam and Eve

  930. ate of the fruit

  931. and God comes to them

  932. and asks them

  933. what they've done.

  934. He asks this of Adam

  935. and we see the very first

  936. communication

  937. of fallen man

  938. and what does he do?

  939. He blames it on Eve.

  940. He says,

  941. the woman

  942. who you gave me.

  943. Not only does he blame it

  944. on Eve,

  945. but he blames it on God,

  946. his own sin.

  947. And then Eve turns

  948. and blames it

  949. on the serpent.

  950. It is part of our

  951. fallen nature

  952. to press blame

  953. on others.

  954. But here we see

  955. Nehemiah takes

  956. credit for it.

  957. He says,

  958. I and my Father's house

  959. have sinned.

  960. We are in the

  961. continual process

  962. of sinning against you

  963. and not keeping your law.

  964. This has been

  965. going on

  966. for all of these

  967. generations

  968. since the exile.

  969. You sent us into exile

  970. because of it

  971. and yet here we are

  972. still.

  973. But he's repenting now

  974. on behalf

  975. of the people.

  976. So he's humble

  977. as he approaches God.

  978. And his prayer is also

  979. intercessory in nature.

  980. He's also praying

  981. on the behalf

  982. of the nation

  983. of Israel.

  984. Is it possible here

  985. for him to speak

  986. and repent

  987. to change the hearts

  988. of the Israelites?

  989. No.

  990. But he prays

  991. on their behalf

  992. anyway.

  993. God,

  994. for your name's sake,

  995. for your glory,

  996. we have been evil

  997. in your sight.

  998. Restore us.

  999. Send us back.

  1000. Roots it back

  1001. in his character

  1002. in this way.

  1003. And Nehemiah

  1004. in this way

  1005. is a type

  1006. of Jesus Christ.

  1007. Now,

  1008. I want to introduce

  1009. you to typology

  1010. if you're not familiar

  1011. with this.

  1012. So,

  1013. I've said

  1014. I recognize

  1015. through the past

  1016. years,

  1017. various people

  1018. throughout the scriptures

  1019. are types

  1020. of Christ.

  1021. And I don't mean

  1022. that in the way

  1023. that a Granny Smith

  1024. apple is a type

  1025. of apple.

  1026. Right?

  1027. I don't really like

  1028. Granny Smiths.

  1029. I think they should

  1030. be excluded

  1031. from the apple

  1032. category.

  1033. but I don't mean

  1034. it in that way.

  1035. Right?

  1036. We're not saying

  1037. that,

  1038. I'm not saying

  1039. that Nehemiah

  1040. is a type

  1041. of Jesus Christ

  1042. and that he's

  1043. a different version

  1044. of him.

  1045. Right?

  1046. But typology

  1047. references a person

  1048. who supersedes

  1049. the antitype

  1050. or the fulfillment

  1051. of it.

  1052. It's a shadow,

  1053. a presupposition

  1054. of something

  1055. that's later to come.

  1056. For example,

  1057. in that way,

  1058. David is a type

  1059. of Christ

  1060. when he takes

  1061. on Goliath.

  1062. Right?

  1063. And the picture

  1064. being shown here

  1065. is that one day

  1066. a greater king

  1067. will come

  1068. and defeat

  1069. death on our behalf.

  1070. Right?

  1071. That we're not

  1072. going to have to

  1073. fight that war

  1074. but he's going to

  1075. come and fight

  1076. it for us.

  1077. The one man,

  1078. that man being

  1079. Jesus Christ.

  1080. And the Old Testament

  1081. is just full

  1082. of typology

  1083. pointing us to

  1084. Jesus Christ.

  1085. We're meant to

  1086. look at a Nehemiah

  1087. and expect

  1088. something greater.

  1089. Pressing us

  1090. too.

  1091. And as Nehemiah

  1092. intercedes

  1093. for the people

  1094. of God

  1095. in the same way

  1096. Jesus intercedes

  1097. for us.

  1098. He is the

  1099. greater Nehemiah,

  1100. the antitype

  1101. to the type

  1102. that is

  1103. Nehemiah.

  1104. Romans 8

  1105. 33 and 34

  1106. reads,

  1107. Who shall bring

  1108. any charge

  1109. against God's elect?

  1110. It is God

  1111. who justifies.

  1112. Who is to condemn?

  1113. Christ Jesus

  1114. is the one

  1115. who died.

  1116. More than that,

  1117. who was raised.

  1118. Who is at the

  1119. right hand of God

  1120. who is indeed

  1121. interceding

  1122. for us.

  1123. Notice here

  1124. that the tie-in

  1125. here is that

  1126. no one can bring

  1127. a charge against

  1128. God's elect.

  1129. No one can

  1130. convict us

  1131. of anything

  1132. because it is

  1133. Jesus Christ

  1134. himself who

  1135. intercedes for us.

  1136. Who leans over

  1137. to God and says,

  1138. Not that one.

  1139. Pass over him.

  1140. My sacrifice

  1141. was enough for him.

  1142. I took on

  1143. his punishment

  1144. and her punishment.

  1145. He intercedes

  1146. on our behalf.

  1147. So he is the

  1148. greater

  1149. Nehemiah.

  1150. Turn with me

  1151. from Nehemiah.

  1152. In closing,

  1153. we're going to look

  1154. at John

    John 13 chapter mention

  1155. chapter 13.

  1156. I just want to

  1157. show you something

  1158. here.

  1159. This is Jesus

  1160. the great

  1161. interceder.

  1162. I miss this

  1163. until this week.

  1164. We see the

  1165. Last Supper

  1166. beginning in

  1167. chapter 13.

  1168. See Jesus

  1169. washing the

  1170. disciples' feet.

  1171. And throughout

  1172. this process,

  1173. he's teaching

  1174. them things

  1175. along the way.

  1176. And at the

  1177. end of chapter

  1178. 14,

  1179. I just totally

  1180. read over this

  1181. so many times,

  1182. he says,

  1183. Rise.

  1184. Let us go

  1185. from here.

  1186. So in my mind,

  1187. I always pictured

  1188. Jesus talking

  1189. through chapter

  1190. 15 and 16

  1191. and even 17

  1192. with the high

  1193. priestly prayer

  1194. of him sitting

  1195. in this upper

  1196. room around a

  1197. table.

  1198. But they

  1199. weren't.

  1200. They were actually

  1201. walking along.

  1202. At the

  1203. beginning of

  1204. chapter 17,

  1205. this is kind

  1206. of where this

  1207. caught my

  1208. attention.

  1209. The record is

  1210. when Jesus had

  1211. spoken these

  1212. words, he

  1213. lifted up his

  1214. eyes to heaven

  1215. and said,

  1216. and here's

  1217. where we have

  1218. the high

  1219. priestly prayer.

  1220. Him pouring

  1221. out his

  1222. desire for

  1223. the apostles

  1224. and those

  1225. who would

  1226. precede them.

  1227. But notice

  1228. at the beginning

  1229. of chapter

  1230. 18,

  1231. when Jesus

  1232. had spoken

  1233. these words,

  1234. when he had

  1235. completed this

  1236. prayer,

  1237. he went out

  1238. with his

  1239. disciples across

  1240. the Kidron

  1241. Valley where

  1242. there was a

  1243. garden which

  1244. he and his

  1245. disciples entered.

  1246. This is the

  1247. garden of

  1248. Gethsemane.

  1249. He pauses

  1250. somewhere before

  1251. they go through

  1252. this.

  1253. Now this is

  1254. pure conjecture

  1255. on my part,

  1256. but I just

  1257. want to paint a

  1258. little bit of a

  1259. picture for you.

  1260. And this Kidron

  1261. Valley was the

  1262. brook of

  1263. Kidron,

  1264. and it was

  1265. used as a

  1266. drain from

  1267. the temple.

  1268. Recall that

  1269. we're in the

  1270. Passover week.

  1271. There was an

  1272. estimated six

  1273. million Jews

  1274. in Jerusalem

  1275. at this time.

  1276. And there's

  1277. sacrifice happening

  1278. that week on

  1279. and on and

  1280. on and on,

  1281. non-stop.

  1282. You could even

  1283. think of it,

  1284. the priest must

  1285. have been knee

  1286. deep in blood.

  1287. And where did

  1288. it all go?

  1289. It drained

  1290. through the

  1291. Valley of

  1292. Kidron,

  1293. down the

  1294. brook of

  1295. Kidron.

  1296. And this is

  1297. the brook

  1298. that they

  1299. pass over as

  1300. they're going

  1301. in to the

  1302. Garden of

  1303. Gethsemane.

  1304. And I just

  1305. imagine,

  1306. we don't know,

  1307. I mean,

  1308. please hear me

  1309. say,

  1310. I do not

  1311. know that

  1312. this is the

  1313. case,

  1314. but I

  1315. imagine that

  1316. this may

  1317. have been

  1318. what caused

  1319. Jesus to

  1320. pause,

  1321. to lift

  1322. his eyes

  1323. to heaven,

  1324. and to

  1325. pray.

  1326. Why?

  1327. He knew that

  1328. his blood was

  1329. about to be

  1330. spilt,

  1331. right?

  1332. He knew that

  1333. he was about

  1334. to make the

  1335. full and

  1336. final atonement.

  1337. All this

  1338. blood that was

  1339. pouring through

  1340. there,

  1341. that was

  1342. necessary for

  1343. the remission

  1344. of sins,

  1345. was just

  1346. meant to

  1347. show our

  1348. need of a

  1349. Savior.

  1350. And he

  1351. was that

  1352. Savior,

  1353. about to

  1354. make the

  1355. ultimate and

  1356. final sacrifice.

  1357. If you read

  1358. through the

  1359. high priestly

  1360. prayer,

  1361. I think also

  1362. he has in

  1363. mind the

  1364. suffering that's

  1365. going to

  1366. come to

  1367. his disciples

  1368. as a result.

  1369. The blood that

  1370. they will spill,

  1371. that they will

  1372. share in his

  1373. suffering in

  1374. that way.

  1375. And I believe

  1376. that he's moved

  1377. to pray at

  1378. that point.

  1379. So look back

  1380. at chapter 17,

  1381. just a portion.

  1382. It's really hard

  1383. for me to decide

  1384. what part of this

  1385. we would read

  1386. together.

  1387. But look at

  1388. verse 13.

  1389. Jesus here

  1390. praying to

  1391. God,

  1392. but now I

  1393. am coming to

  1394. you and

  1395. these things

  1396. I speak in

  1397. the world

  1398. that they

  1399. may have

  1400. my joy

  1401. fulfilled in

  1402. themselves.

  1403. I have

  1404. given them

  1405. your word

  1406. and the

  1407. world has

  1408. hated them

  1409. because they

  1410. are not

  1411. of the

  1412. world,

  1413. just as I

  1414. am not

  1415. of the

  1416. world.

  1417. I do

  1418. not ask

  1419. that you

  1420. take them

  1421. out of

  1422. the

  1423. world,

  1424. but that

  1425. you keep

  1426. them from

  1427. the evil

  1428. one.

  1429. They are

  1430. not of

  1431. the

  1432. world,

  1433. just as I

  1434. am not

  1435. of the

  1436. world.

  1437. Sanctify

  1438. them in

  1439. your truth.

  1440. Your word

  1441. is truth.

  1442. As you

  1443. sent me

  1444. into the

  1445. world,

  1446. so I

  1447. have sent

  1448. them into

  1449. the world,

  1450. and for

  1451. their sake

  1452. I consecrate

  1453. myself,

  1454. that they

  1455. also may

  1456. be sanctified

  1457. in truth.

  1458. He's

  1459. praying for

  1460. the apostles

  1461. here.

  1462. Then verse

  1463. 30 he

  1464. says,

  1465. I do not

  1466. ask for

  1467. these only,

  1468. but also

  1469. for those

  1470. who will

  1471. believe in

  1472. me through

  1473. their word.

  1474. All of

  1475. us.

  1476. He expands

  1477. this prayer

  1478. to all of

  1479. us who

  1480. have placed

  1481. our faith

  1482. in Jesus

  1483. Christ,

  1484. the word

  1485. of God.

  1486. You see

  1487. here this

  1488. picture to

  1489. draw you

  1490. a connection.

  1491. We have

  1492. been sanctified.

  1493. We have

  1494. been set

  1495. aside from

  1496. the world

  1497. for the glory

  1498. of God.

  1499. The way the

  1500. Old Testament

  1501. Israelites

  1502. had been.

  1503. To be built

  1504. up into a

  1505. spiritual house,

  1506. not a

  1507. physical one.

  1508. We're not

  1509. set to the

  1510. task of

  1511. building

  1512. grandiose

  1513. buildings to

  1514. the glory

  1515. of God.

  1516. We're building

  1517. up a

  1518. spiritual house,

  1519. the church.

  1520. church.

  1521. This is

  1522. what has

  1523. been set

  1524. before us

  1525. and it

  1526. is an

  1527. immense

  1528. task.

  1529. It's not

  1530. something we

  1531. ought to

  1532. think we

  1533. can accomplish

  1534. on our

  1535. own.

  1536. And as

  1537. such,

  1538. we ought to

  1539. set ourselves

  1540. to prayer.

  1541. We have

  1542. Jesus as

  1543. our great

  1544. example,

  1545. teaching us

  1546. to pray in

  1547. Matthew 6.

  1548. And we'll

  1549. address that

  1550. some more

  1551. in the coming

  1552. weeks.

  1553. Let me close

  1554. with a quote

  1555. from Hudson

  1556. Taylor,

  1557. an English

  1558. Protestant

  1559. missionary to

  1560. China.

  1561. He says,

  1562. All God's

  1563. giants have

  1564. been weak

  1565. men who

  1566. did great

  1567. things for

  1568. God because

  1569. they believed

  1570. that God

  1571. would be with

  1572. them.

  1573. Let's pray

  1574. together.
