  1. We'll be looking at this today at chapter 2, verses 1-18.

  2. Join me in a word of prayer.

  3. Father God, we recognize this morning that this is your word.

  4. !

  5. And you spoke it to us in various ways and different means,

  6. but all of it was inspired by your spirit and it is sufficient for us.

  7. And I pray, Father, this day that you'll help us to relish it,

  8. to appreciate what it is that it has to say to us in our time now

  9. as we're studying this story of Nehemiah and what was happening then.

  10. It has implications for us now.

  11. And I pray that you'll help us to take these things to heart.

  12. We pray this in Christ's name. Amen.

  13. So, just to give us this kind of a summary up to this point,

  14. we've worked our way through chapter 1 in the past couple of weeks here.

  15. We have seen that Nehemiah is the cupbearer to King Artaxerxes.

  16. He is in the Persian Empire.

  17. And we're now at kind of the tail end of the remnant of Israel

  18. that had been taken away during Babylonian captivity, being taken back.

  19. They've been able to travel back now to Jerusalem.

  20. And word reaches him by way of his brother that the city is still in shambles.

  21. The wall is still broken down.

  22. We can see this through the beginning of the chapter through verse 3.

  23. And when he hears this, he sits down and he weeps and he mourns for days.

  24. Not simply because his people, his nation is in shambles,

  25. but more so because his God is being ridiculed.

  26. Because God's visible glory on earth at this time was the state of his nation.

  27. The state of Israel.

  28. And Nehemiah then launches into a prayer.

  29. And that's what we looked at together last week and the very nature of this prayer.

  30. Today I want to show you in verse 2 some themes that are kind of showing back up here again

  31. from when we studied in Romans chapter 15, the life of Paul.

    Romans 15 chapter mention

  32. And those themes are prayer, planning, and providence.

  33. Prayer, planning, and providence.

  34. And we looked last week at length at this prayer that Nehemiah prayed.

  35. Now, recognize that he was praying for approximately four months.

  36. Fasting and praying continually.

  37. This was a huge task ahead of him.

  38. Not only the task of building the wall,

  39. but even getting the permission to go and build the wall.

  40. Obtaining the means necessary for the building of the wall.

  41. It was a balancing act there, wasn't it?

  42. It was a massive, massive task ahead of him.

  43. I misspoke a little bit last week and said that King Artaxerxes had issued an edict 20 years previous.

  44. It wasn't quite that.

  45. It was about 13 years prior.

  46. To stop the building of the wall.

  47. Within the seventh year of his reign,

  48. word had reached him that the Israelites were beginning to build the wall again around Jerusalem.

  49. And he issued an edict saying,

  50. You will not build this wall.

  51. No glory will go to your God because all glory belongs to me as the king.

  52. So here, the cupbearer, lowly Nehemiah,

  53. is going to face the king and ask him to reverse his edict.

  54. Which was a big deal.

  55. We change our mind all the time.

  56. I'll tell you all the time that I was wrong then.

  57. We're going to do something different now.

  58. Kings didn't do that in these days.

  59. So it was an admission of their own frailty.

  60. Kings were worshipped as deities.

  61. They were gods.

  62. In their own minds, they were gods.

  63. So if they were to go back on their own word,

  64. they were admitting that they have faults.

  65. In addition to that, we kind of get this idea.

  66. I think some people read chapter 2 and they think that Nehemiah and the king were kind of buddies.

  67. You'll read that often the cupbearer to the king kind of became endeared to him

  68. because he risked his life every time the king drank wine.

  69. And kings drank a lot of wine.

  70. And they often became counselors to them.

  71. But the position stayed the same.

  72. The king was still the king.

  73. And the cupbearer, the cupbearer.

  74. They weren't buddies.

  75. He didn't walk in and stride up onto the platform and sit down next to him next to the throne and say,

  76. Hey, my people are kind of in a rough spot.

  77. I'd love to go help them out.

  78. What do you think?

  79. He had to go face this king.

  80. He had to go present something to him which was to say,

  81. You were faulty in your original edict.

  82. And I want to go build something that's much more glorious than you.

  83. I want to steal from you your glory.

  84. This was the presentation he was to make before the king.

  85. So for four months, he fasts and he prays.

  86. Presented to you a Latin term, sine qua non, without which nothing.

  87. He fully understood for the task ahead of him that if God was not with him in it,

  88. through his prayer, nothing would be accomplished.

  89. And we saw that his prayer was persistent.

  90. That it was saturated by God's character.

  91. That it was motivated by God's promises.

  92. And that it was humble and intercessory.

  93. He admitted both his guilt and the guilt of the nation.

  94. I exhorted you last week that we ought to be more patient in our prayers.

  95. Psalm 27, 14 says,

  96. Wait for the Lord, be strong, and let your hearts take courage.

  97. Wait for the Lord.

  98. Psalm 130, 5 and 6,

  99. I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in his word I hope.

  100. My soul waits for the Lord more than watchmen for the morning.

  101. More than watchmen for the morning.

  102. And this was the way in which he prepares himself for what we're about to see happen here.

  103. And I promise we're going to read the text together.

  104. But this is the stage being set.

  105. So we see the prayer on his part for this task that's ahead of him.

  106. So let's begin reading in verse 1 of chapter 2.

  107. And I'm going to stop along the way and bring some commentary into this as we go through it.

  108. And then we'll go back and visit the themes.

  109. Verse 1.

  110. In the month of Nisan, in the twentieth year of King Artaxerxes, when wine was before him, I took up the wine and gave it to the king.

  111. Now I had not been sad in his presence.

  112. And the king said to me,

  113. Why is your face sad, seeing you are not sick?

  114. This is nothing but sadness of the heart.

  115. Then I was very much afraid.

  116. I said to the king,

  117. Let the king live forever.

  118. Why should not my face be sad when the city, the place of my father's graves, lives in ruins, and its gates have been destroyed by fire?

  119. Now, recognize that as he's approaching the king,

  120. What a great time for God to orchestrate this conversation.

  121. Because he has now tasted the wine.

  122. He's shown how faithfully he's willing to serve the king.

  123. And the king is now endeared to him in this way.

  124. Yet, as I talked previously about their position,

  125. it was a very dangerous thing to be sad in the presence of the king.

  126. If you were sad in the presence of a king, it was to say to the king,

  127. The way you're ruling is not ample for my joy.

  128. And kings wanted people in their presence to think that they hung the moon.

  129. Everything is great in your kingdom.

  130. We are so, so very happy with all that's going on because you rule over everything.

  131. So to be sad in the face of the king could potentially lead to beheading.

  132. Just imagine some of the conversation that may have happened as the report of this went out.

  133. Somebody said,

  134. Can you believe what Nehemiah said to the king?

  135. He was sad in his presence and this is what he said?

  136. And that the other buddy would have said,

  137. Oh man, when is he getting beheaded?

  138. I'd love to watch that.

  139. And they go,

  140. The king granted him his wish.

  141. Can you believe it?

  142. What a shocking thing this would have been to have taken place here.

  143. So Nehemiah was afraid, we see there in verse 2.

  144. Because the king recognized his sorrow.

  145. Recognized that he wasn't content with the way things were.

  146. And I want to believe that as Nehemiah had the scriptures to this point,

  147. He took heart in things like Psalm 56, 3 and 4.

  148. When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.

  149. In God whose word I praise, in God I trust.

  150. I shall not be afraid.

  151. What can flesh do to me?

  152. So here's a man that has been communing with God in prayer for the past four months.

  153. And he's willing to be sad in the presence of the king to make known his request.

  154. Now verse 3, you'll notice that he talks about the tombs of his fathers and the gates.

  155. A tomb was a place of honor where respect was shown for the dead.

  156. And a place that the living hoped to one day join their ancestors.

  157. Recognizing the Jews knew there was an eternal state.

  158. But they wanted their bodies to be laid along with their ancestors.

  159. And the gates were emblematic of the life of the city.

  160. This is where traffic happened.

  161. Many meetings happened.

  162. Courts were adjourned at gates.

  163. So the city gates being burned meant that the people had no community.

  164. There was no livelihood happening in this place.

  165. Verse 4.

  166. Then the king said to me,

  167. What are you requesting?

  168. So I prayed to the God of heaven and I said to the king,

  169. If it pleases the king,

  170. And if your servant has found favor in your sight,

  171. That you send me to Judah, to the city of my father's graves,

  172. That I may rebuild it.

  173. Now notice again the pause here for prayer.

  174. And some scholars have suggested that he went away,

  175. Spent more time in prayer,

  176. And returned with this plan.

  177. And I don't believe so.

  178. I have no way of knowing that for sure.

  179. But it seems ludicrous to me that the king would have granted him permission to do that.

  180. He asked him a question.

  181. He wanted an answer to the question.

  182. And I believe that in this case,

  183. Nehemiah did a quick little,

  184. Now God?

  185. Like, this thing we've been praying about,

  186. This vision you give me for what needs to be done,

  187. Should I speak up now?

  188. You better put your hand over my mouth,

  189. Because I'm about to say it.

  190. I think this is the prayer that Nehemiah prays at this point.

  191. And I believe Nehemiah would have understood completely what Paul meant in 1 Thessalonians 5.17

  192. When he said,

  193. Pray without ceasing.

  194. This continual conversation happening with the Lord.

  195. So when the king asked the question,

  196. He said,

  197. Now God, go?

  198. Is this the moment we've been waiting for?

  199. God said yes.

  200. And off he goes into this conversation with the king.

  201. Nehemiah is often considered the Old Testament counterpart to Paul.

  202. Because he had such a grand, holy ambition,

  203. Just as Paul did to take the gospel to the Gentiles.

  204. And he had such a beautiful life of prayers.

  205. I've said before, there are ten prayers recorded in the thirteen chapters of Nehemiah.

  206. So he prays.

  207. Verse 6,

  208. And the king said to me,

  209. The queen sitting beside him,

  210. How long will you be gone?

  211. And when will you return?

  212. So it pleased the king to send me when I had given him a time.

  213. Now just an interesting note,

  214. I believe the introductory paper I gave you,

  215. This note saying that the queen was sitting beside him

  216. Probably meant

  217. That there was some endearing quality

  218. That had been passed down

  219. For the Jews.

  220. Recall the story of Esser.

  221. Esther was likely

  222. King Artaxerxes' stepmother.

  223. She was married to Xerxes.

  224. And she would have had great influence over the current queen.

  225. She would have taken her under her wing

  226. And probably passed along

  227. A love for the Jewish people.

  228. So just an interesting note for you there.

  229. Verse 7,

  230. And I said to the king,

  231. If it pleases the king,

  232. Let letters be given me

  233. To the governors of the province beyond the river,

  234. That they may let me pass through

  235. Until I come to Judah.

  236. And a letter to Asaph,

  237. The keeper of the king's forest,

  238. That he may give me timber

  239. To make beams for the gates

  240. Of the fortress of the temple,

  241. And for the wall of the city,

  242. And for the house that I shall occupy.

  243. And the king granted me what I asked,

  244. For the good hand of my God was upon me.

  245. Then I came to the governors

  246. Of the province beyond the river,

  247. And gave them the king's letters.

  248. Now the king had sent with me

  249. Officers of the army and horsemen.

  250. But when Sambalat the Horonite

  251. And Tobiah the Ammonite's servant heard this,

  252. This pleased them greatly

  253. That someone had come to seek the welfare

  254. Of the people of Israel.

  255. So when the king asks him what he needs,

  256. Seems that he cashes all of his chips in,

  257. And he asks for letters for safe passage.

  258. It's about 800 miles distance

  259. That he had to travel from where he was

  260. In Susa, where they were wintering,

  261. To Israel.

  262. It would have taken them about three months,

  263. And there would have been a lot of peril

  264. Along the way,

  265. If they didn't have the permission of the king.

  266. If the king hadn't given them a pass,

  267. So to speak.

  268. But he goes even a step beyond that,

  269. Because the people needed the resources

  270. By which to rebuild.

  271. And forests at this time

  272. Were highly, highly guarded.

  273. Wood was a high commodity in this region,

  274. As if you've ever seen photos or traveled

  275. In the Middle East,

  276. You can understand that very thing.

  277. So not only does Nehemiah ask for permission

  278. To go to relinquish his duty as the cupbearer,

  279. To go rebuild something

  280. That's going to compete with the glory of the king,

  281. But he also asks for the king to pay for it.

  282. He asks for letters

  283. To go to Asaph,

  284. Who governs his property

  285. To get wood for the rebuilding.

  286. It's a bold, bold,

  287. Very bold thing he did.

  288. And beyond this,

  289. Beyond what he asks,

  290. You'll notice in verse 9 and 10

  291. That the king sends with him an armed guard

  292. To protect him to that degree,

  293. Because the governors were not pleased

  294. With the work that was going to be done.

  295. Verse 11,

  296. So I went to Jerusalem

  297. And was there three days.

  298. So we fast forward this three months journey.

  299. So I went to Jerusalem

  300. And was there three days.

  301. Then I arose in the night,

  302. I and a few men with me.

  303. And I told no one what my God

  304. Had put into my heart to do for Jerusalem.

  305. There was no animal with me

  306. But the one on which I rode.

  307. I went out by night,

  308. By the valley gate,

  309. To the dragon spring,

  310. And to the dung gate.

  311. And I inspected the walls of Jerusalem

  312. That were broken down,

  313. And its gates had been destroyed by fire.

  314. Then I went on to the fountain gate,

  315. And to the king's pool,

  316. But there was no room for the animal

  317. That was under me to pass.

  318. Then I went up in the night

  319. By the valley,

  320. And inspected the wall,

  321. And I turned back

  322. And entered by the valley gate,

  323. And so returned.

  324. And the officials did not know

  325. Where I had gone,

  326. Or what I was doing.

  327. And I had not yet told the Jews,

  328. The priests,

  329. The nobles,

  330. The officials,

  331. And the rest,

  332. Who were to do the work.

  333. So once he gets there,

  334. He sets out,

  335. He spends three days

  336. Making a very careful plan.

  337. In fact,

  338. Travels by night

  339. To inspect the work

  340. That's ahead of them.

  341. The record here

  342. Of these gates

  343. And the sections of the wall

  344. Are of interest,

  345. But only historical interest.

  346. They really add no weight

  347. Or bearing

  348. To the text itself.

  349. But it does help us see

  350. That the record is accurate.

  351. That the way the city was built,

  352. The state that it was in

  353. At this time,

  354. Even the fact that he had to

  355. Get off of the animal

  356. And travel through a narrow area

  357. Gives record that there's

  358. Some accountability here.

  359. There's legitimacy

  360. To the text itself.

  361. So he goes out

  362. And he surveys

  363. And he plans.

  364. Verse 17,

  365. Then I said to them,

  366. He addresses the people,

  367. You see the trouble we are in,

  368. How Jerusalem lies in ruins

  369. With its gates burned.

  370. Come,

  371. Let us build the wall of Jerusalem

  372. That we may no longer suffer

  373. Derision.

  374. And I told them

  375. Of the hand of my God

  376. That had been upon me for good

  377. And also of the words

  378. That the king had spoken to me.

  379. And they said,

  380. Let us rise up

  381. And build.

  382. So they strengthened their hands

  383. For the good work.

  384. Now notice here again,

  385. He addresses them

  386. In verse 17,

  387. He says,

  388. That we may no longer

  389. Suffer derision.

  390. And I want you to always remember

  391. That the state of the people,

  392. They connected their state

  393. To the glory of God.

  394. So he's not saying,

  395. Let's build this for us.

  396. We don't want to be ridiculed.

  397. Let's do this for us.

  398. When he spoke these words to them,

  399. They recognized fully

  400. What he was saying.

  401. Let's do this

  402. So we're not ashamed

  403. Because when we're ashamed,

  404. Our God is ashamed.

  405. And then it says,

  406. They put their hands

  407. To the good work.

  408. Means they became

  409. Resolute

  410. To build the wall.

  411. And the picture in my mind

  412. Of this is when you're

  413. Getting ready to do something

  414. Hard with your hands.

  415. So you're going to

  416. Dig a hole with pulse hole diggers

  417. And a guy cracks his knuckles

  418. And gets ready for that

  419. Kind of a work.

  420. Or a boxer who tapes his hands up

  421. And gets ready to go.

  422. You're going to have to do

  423. A lot of dissuading

  424. To keep that guy

  425. From getting into a fight

  426. Once that happens.

  427. Right?

  428. They were resolute.

  429. They got themselves ready.

  430. They strengthened themselves

  431. For the good work

  432. That was ahead of them.

  433. So we saw already

  434. Nehemiah's prayer

  435. Leading up to this

  436. In the midst of his request

  437. To the king.

  438. He also planned.

  439. Three ways he planned.

  440. He knew

  441. That he needed to go.

  442. God had directed him

  443. In his time of prayer

  444. To know that he was

  445. The one that was meant

  446. To go back

  447. And lead the people

  448. In the rebuilding.

  449. Remember he's a three month journey

  450. Eight hundred miles away.

  451. Could he have not

  452. Written a letter?

  453. Dispatched a plan?

  454. Sent it along?

  455. And had somebody else

  456. Build it?

  457. Certainly God could have

  458. Reconstructed the wall

  459. In that way

  460. And used Nehemiah

  461. To that degree.

  462. But Nehemiah knew

  463. He was the one

  464. That was meant to go.

  465. To be so bold

  466. As to ask the king

  467. To let him relinquish his duty

  468. And leave.

  469. He knew

  470. It was him.

  471. It's in verse five.

  472. Verse six.

  473. He knew how long

  474. He needed to go for.

  475. He must have had

  476. A very clear plan

  477. For the work

  478. That was ahead of him.

  479. He had it to see the wall.

  480. But he was able

  481. To give the king an answer

  482. As to when he would return.

  483. And in verses seven and eight

  484. He knew what provisions

  485. He needed from the king

  486. As well.

  487. He had already plotted it out.

  488. He had thought about the journey.

  489. Once he got there

  490. He thought about the things

  491. That were going to be available

  492. For the rebuilding.

  493. And he knew what to request

  494. Of the king.

  495. So the planning was

  496. Very very important here.

  497. But the planning is not devoid

  498. Of the providence of God.

  499. Rejoice John MacArthur said

  500. Making sensible

  501. And careful plans

  502. For serving God

  503. Does not conflict

  504. With reliance

  505. On his providence.

  506. And reliance

  507. On his providence

  508. Does not excuse

  509. Failure to plan.

  510. Notice

  511. In the last half

  512. Of verse eight

  513. He says

  514. And the king granted me

  515. What I asked

  516. He granted me my plan

  517. Why?

  518. For the good hand

  519. Of my God

  520. Was upon me.

  521. So he prayed

  522. And he planned

  523. But he fully recognized

  524. The providence of God

  525. Which is necessary

  526. For any work

  527. Any holy ambition

  528. To come to pass.

  529. So let's look some more

  530. At this providence.

  531. We see it again

  532. In verse 18.

  533. It says

  534. And I told them

  535. Of the hand of my God

  536. That had been upon me

  537. For good.

  538. He encourages the people

  539. To do the work

  540. This work

  541. That they had been

  542. Ordered not to do

  543. Thirteen years previous.

  544. This work

  545. That had yet

  546. To be completed

  547. For the 90 years

  548. That they've been

  549. Back now

  550. In Jerusalem.

  551. They were encouraged

  552. By his report

  553. Of his presentation

  554. To the king.

  555. They would have said

  556. The king did what?

  557. You're here with letters

  558. Protection

  559. An armed guard?

  560. You got his credit card

  561. To get wood

  562. For this building?

  563. Incredible.

  564. It was an encouragement

  565. To them.

  566. Proverbs

  567. They had these

  568. Proverbs by the way

  569. These scriptures.

  570. Proverbs 16

  571. 3

  572. Commit your work

  573. To the Lord

  574. And your plans

  575. Will be established.

  576. 16

  577. 9

  578. The heart of man

  579. Plans his way

  580. But the Lord

  581. Establishes

  582. His steps.

  583. Proverbs 19

  584. 21

  585. Many are the plans

  586. In the mind of a man

  587. But it is the purpose

  588. Of the Lord

  589. That will stand.

  590. Nehemiah

  591. Certainly knew this

  592. As he set a course

  593. As he thought through

  594. What needed to be done.

  595. How foolish would it have been

  596. For Nehemiah

  597. To stand in front of the king

  598. And the king says

  599. What do you need?

  600. What are you requesting of me?

  601. Nehemiah goes

  602. I don't know.

  603. Can I have a little bit of time

  604. To think about it?

  605. Would the king have responded

  606. Favorably to that?

  607. Probably not.

  608. He would have said you fool.

  609. Probably would have beheaded him

  610. In this case.

  611. He had a plan.

  612. He knew when it was time

  613. To press on

  614. And act.

  615. He had it all

  616. Plotted out.

  617. A couple of weeks ago

  618. We had one of our

  619. Project Grow outings

  620. And we did our

  621. Annual boat race

  622. Where we bring together

  623. A bunch of

  624. Junk cups

  625. And styrofoam plates

  626. And things of that nature

  627. And we build boats

  628. And we race them

  629. Down Yuhula Creek

  630. Just for fun.

  631. It's always a good time though.

  632. We always have a blast.

  633. The whole boat

  634. Has to cross the finish line

  635. So that's always the joys

  636. They come down in pieces.

  637. These boats have no power sources.

  638. They usually have some sails.

  639. Some really creative people

  640. Put sails on them

  641. But it's never windy enough

  642. Really to propel the boat

  643. Down the river.

  644. So all of these boats

  645. Are kind of victim

  646. If you'll allow

  647. To the current.

  648. Right?

  649. We line people up

  650. Across the creek

  651. And I always try to get people

  652. To be smart about

  653. Where they put the boat in

  654. The current.

  655. You know?

  656. Because there's logs

  657. And things that are going to

  658. Cause them to get caught up.

  659. But ultimately

  660. Once you let the boat go

  661. You have no control of the boat

  662. The boat just moves its way down

  663. And the boat certainly has

  664. No control of its own.

  665. God's providence is like that

  666. An undercurrent providence

  667. That carries us along.

  668. Now in real life

  669. A boat has no power

  670. Out on the ocean

  671. It's just going to get tossed

  672. To and fro

  673. By the waves

  674. Until you put it under power.

  675. You put a boat under power

  676. You have it move faster

  677. Than the water around it

  678. And the rudder then actually

  679. Has some ability to turn.

  680. The same is true on a river

  681. If you're paddling a canoe

  682. If you're just drifting in a canoe

  683. You can't turn the canoe

  684. You speed the canoe up a little bit

  685. And you can use the paddles

  686. To steer the boat

  687. Down the river.

  688. In our lives

  689. We have power

  690. We have minds

  691. We have ability

  692. But recognize that even that

  693. Is a gift of God.

  694. Even that is providential.

  695. So everything we do

  696. There is an undercurrent

  697. That carries us along.

  698. Romans 8

  699. 28-31

  700. And we know that for those

  701. Who love God

  702. All things work together

  703. For good.

  704. All things.

  705. No matter what you do

  706. Or anyone does to you

  707. All things.

  708. No matter what major calamity happens

  709. No matter what economy fails

  710. Or mudslide goes down

  711. Or tornado comes

  712. And rips your house apart

  713. All things.

  714. Work together for good.

  715. For those who are called

  716. According to his purpose.

  717. For those whom he foreknew

  718. He also predestined

  719. To be conformed

  720. To the image of a son.

  721. And there's our definition of good.

  722. Work together for good

  723. To be conformed

  724. To the image of a son.

  725. In order that he might be

  726. The firstborn among many brothers.

  727. And those whom he predestined

  728. He also called.

  729. And those whom he called

  730. He also justified.

  731. And those whom he justified

  732. He also glorified.

  733. What then shall we say

  734. To these things?

  735. If God is for us

  736. Who can be against us?

  737. The undercurrent of providence.

  738. And so the encouragement in that

  739. Is to strengthen your hands

  740. For the good work.

  741. Why not?

  742. The providence of God

  743. Is presented to us.

  744. We know that his goodness

  745. Is upon the good work.

  746. Strengthen your hands

  747. For the good work.

  748. That would bring us back

  749. To the Old Testament again.

  750. Again a story

  751. That Nehemiah

  752. And the people he was speaking to

  753. Would have been very aware of.

  754. Genesis chapter 39

    Genesis 39 chapter mention

  755. We see the story of Joseph

  756. Being sold into slavery.

  757. And he is now a slave

  758. In the house of Potiphar.

  759. In verse 2

  760. It says the Lord was with Joseph

  761. And he became a successful man.

  762. And he was in the house

  763. Of his Egyptian master.

  764. His master saw the Lord

  765. And the Lord caused

  766. All that he did

  767. To succeed in his hands.

  768. So Joseph found favor

  769. In his sight

  770. And attended him

  771. And he made him

  772. Overseer of his house

  773. And put him in charge

  774. Of all that he had.

  775. Verse 3

  776. The Lord was with him

  777. And the Lord caused

  778. All that he did

  779. To succeed in his hands.

  780. Later

  781. We know Potiphar's wife

  782. Tries to be with him.

  783. Accuses him

  784. Of trying to be with her.

  785. Potiphar has him

  786. Thrown into prison.

  787. Beginning in verse 20

  788. Of chapter 39

  789. And Joseph's master

  790. Took him

  791. And put him

  792. Into the prison.

  793. The place where

  794. The king's prisoners

  795. Were confined.

  796. And he was there

  797. In prison.

  798. But the Lord

  799. Was with Joseph

  800. And showed him

  801. Steadfast love

  802. And gave him favor

  803. In the sight

  804. Of the keeper

  805. Of the prison.

  806. And the keeper

  807. Of the prison

  808. Put Joseph in charge

  809. Of all the prisoners

  810. Who were in the prison.

  811. Whatever was done there

  812. He was the one

  813. Who did it.

  814. The keeper of the prison

  815. Payed no attention

  816. To anything that was

  817. In Joseph's charge

  818. Because the Lord

  819. Was with him

  820. And whatever he did

  821. The Lord

  822. Made it succeed.

  823. The keeper of the prison

  824. Gave him charge

  825. Of a section of the prison

  826. And said

  827. I don't have to worry

  828. About that anymore

  829. Because Joseph the prisoner

  830. Has got it handled.

  831. He'll take care

  832. He'll keep everything

  833. In order.

  834. Right?

  835. Because the Lord

  836. Made it succeed.

  837. And of course

  838. If we go on

  839. In that story

  840. We see Joseph

  841. Having visions

  842. Being put in charge

  843. Of all of the crops

  844. Of Egypt

  845. Storing them up

  846. To save the Egyptians

  847. And later

  848. We find out

  849. The Jews

  850. From famine.

  851. Right?

  852. We see God's providence

  853. As an undercurrent

  854. Working through the story

  855. And I believe that

  856. The people here

  857. Would have known this

  858. And they're seeing

  859. Evidence of God's providence

  860. In the working

  861. Through Nehemiah

  862. To come back and build

  863. So they strengthen

  864. Their hands

  865. For the work.

  866. Need some further

  867. Encouragement?

  868. I hope not

  869. But you're getting it

  870. Anyway.

  871. Colossians 1.16

  872. Paul, speaking of Christ

  873. Says,

  874. For by Him

  875. All things were created

  876. In heaven and on earth

  877. Visible and invisible

  878. Whether thrones

  879. Or dominions

  880. Or rulers

  881. Or authorities

  882. All things were created

  883. Through Him

  884. And for Him

  885. Now, catch

  886. I always

  887. Grab hold of the beginning

  888. And I grab hold of the end

  889. For by Him

  890. All things were created

  891. That's awesome

  892. All things were created

  893. Through Him

  894. And for Him

  895. But notice the list

  896. Of things that were created

  897. By Him

  898. And for Him

  899. All things in heaven and earth

  900. Visible and invisible

  901. Whether thrones

  902. Or dominions

  903. Or rulers

  904. Or authorities

  905. Reigns over

  906. All of those things

  907. Certainly

  908. In the case of

  909. Artaxerxes

  910. We see that God

  911. Shapes

  912. The heart of this man

  913. To go back

  914. On His own edict

  915. To basically say

  916. To His people

  917. I was a fool then

  918. To send off

  919. A people

  920. To build a fortress

  921. Against Him

  922. And His reign

  923. To rob

  924. Some of the glory

  925. That He felt

  926. Was due Him

  927. The name

  928. Artaxerxes

  929. Means

  930. Righteous

  931. Ruler

  932. And we can certainly

  933. See here

  934. That He was ruled

  935. By the

  936. Righteous ruler

  937. Jesus Christ

  938. All the rulers

  939. Of this world

  940. Those that we face

  941. Today

  942. Are ultimately

  943. And finally ruled

  944. By Jesus Christ

  945. They were created

  946. By Him

  947. And

  948. For Him

  949. Is this true

  950. Of our president

  951. It certainly

  952. Is

  953. How about

  954. Of Kim Jong-un

  955. Right

  956. We probably

  957. Could label him

  958. One of the most

  959. Evil men

  960. Alive now

  961. He's the

  962. Succeder to his

  963. Father

  964. Kim Jong-il

  965. North Korea

  966. If you know this

  967. Right

  968. You know he's not

  969. The president

  970. Of North Korea

  971. The presidency

  972. Belongs to

  973. His grandfather

  974. Who apparently

  975. Will be the

  976. President forever

  977. His father

  978. Is the supreme

  979. Leader

  980. Who will be

  981. The supreme

  982. Leader

  983. Forever

  984. So

  985. Kim Jong-un

  986. Has had to come up

  987. With some of his

  988. Own titles

  989. And in seven

  990. Months time

  991. He's come up

  992. With six

  993. You ready for them

  994. He is the

  995. Marshal of the

  996. Democratic People's

  997. Republic of Korea

  998. The first chairman

  999. Of the National

  1000. Defense Commission

  1001. First secretary

  1002. Of the Workers

  1003. Party

  1004. Chairman of the

  1005. Party's Central

  1006. Military Commission

  1007. Member of the

  1008. Presidium of the

  1009. Party's Political

  1010. Bureau

  1011. And supreme

  1012. Commander of the

  1013. Korean People's

  1014. Army

  1015. This is Kim Jong-un

  1016. He is ruled

  1017. By the Son of

  1018. God

  1019. The right arm

  1020. Of the Lord

  1021. The Lion of Judah

  1022. The Great I Am

  1023. No title

  1024. No matter how

  1025. Lofty

  1026. Will ever

  1027. Place a man

  1028. In charge of

  1029. The greatest man

  1030. The one who

  1031. Walked this earth

  1032. Fully human

  1033. And fully

  1034. Divine

  1035. The one that we

  1036. Call Jesus Christ

  1037. He reigns

  1038. Supreme

  1039. Over all

  1040. So here we

  1041. Have

  1042. The Jews

  1043. Living in

  1044. Shambles

  1045. Their walls

  1046. Torn down

  1047. The glory of

  1048. God defaced

  1049. In this way

  1050. And they hear

  1051. A report

  1052. Of the providence

  1053. Of God

  1054. God working

  1055. Through

  1056. Nehemiah

  1057. And they're

  1058. Encouraged

  1059. To strengthen

  1060. Their hands

  1061. For the work

  1062. We're going to

  1063. See the work

  1064. They do

  1065. It's incredible

  1066. They complete

  1067. This wall

  1068. Hasn't been

  1069. Completed

  1070. In 90

  1071. Years

  1072. They do

  1073. It in 52

  1074. Days

  1075. They work

  1076. Tirelessly

  1077. We'll talk

  1078. About that

  1079. Next week

  1080. An incredible

  1081. Incredible

  1082. Effort

  1083. And they're

  1084. Encouraged

  1085. To do this

  1086. By the

  1087. Providence

  1088. Of God

  1089. How much

  1090. More should

  1091. We

  1092. Be encouraged

  1093. To work

  1094. Because we

  1095. Now have

  1096. The full

  1097. Revelation

  1098. Of the

  1099. Providence

  1100. Of God

  1101. We have

  1102. Jesus

  1103. Christ

  1104. The finisher

  1105. Of all

  1106. Of that

  1107. All the

  1108. Promises

  1109. Of God

  1110. Are yes

  1111. And amen

  1112. In Jesus

  1113. Christ

  1114. We should be

  1115. All the

  1116. Much more

  1117. Encouraged

  1118. So let me draw

  1119. Out the connection

  1120. For you

  1121. As we talk

  1122. About these

  1123. People

  1124. Who are

  1125. Building a

  1126. Wall

  1127. Visible

  1128. Glory of God

  1129. On earth

  1130. What is now

  1131. The visible

  1132. Display

  1133. Of God's

  1134. Glory

  1135. On this

  1136. Earth

  1137. It's me

  1138. And it's you

  1139. It's the

  1140. Church

  1141. This is

  1142. Redeemed

  1143. People

  1144. 1 Peter

  1145. 2

  1146. 1

  1147. Let's go

  1148. And turn

  1149. There

  1150. With me

  1151. It's too

  1152. Much goodness

  1153. Here for you

  1154. Just to listen

  1155. To me

  1156. Say it

  1157. 1 Peter

  1158. 2

  1159. 1

  1160. Peter's giving

  1161. Instruction

  1162. To the way

  1163. These people

  1164. Ought to live

  1165. What their lives

  1166. Should look like

  1167. So put away

  1168. All malice

  1169. And all deceit

  1170. And hypocrisy

  1171. And envy

  1172. And all slander

  1173. Like newborn infants

  1174. Long for the pure

  1175. Spiritual mick

  1176. Though by it

  1177. You may grow up

  1178. Into salvation

  1179. If indeed

  1180. You have tasted

  1181. That the Lord

  1182. Is good

  1183. As you come

  1184. To him

  1185. A living stone

  1186. Rejected by men

  1187. But in the sight

  1188. Of God

  1189. Chosen and precious

  1190. You yourselves

  1191. Like living stones

  1192. Are being built up

  1193. As a spiritual house

  1194. There's the key

  1195. To this

  1196. Whole connection

  1197. Right

1198. As you come to him

  1199. Being Christ

  1200. Right

1201. You're able to put off

  1202. These things

  1203. This type of living

  1204. Long for the pure

  1205. Spiritual milk

  1206. Jesus is the

  1207. Saver

  1208. Of God

  1209. He is the

  1210. Very

  1211. Flavor

  1212. That the Lord

  1213. Is good

  1214. So as you come

  1215. To him

  1216. To Christ

  1217. A living stone

  1218. Rejected by men

  1219. But in the sight

  1220. Of God

  1221. Chosen and precious

  1222. You yourselves

  1223. Like living stones

  1224. Are being built up

  1225. As a spiritual house

1226. To be a holy priesthood

  1227. To offer spiritual

  1228. Sacrifices

  1229. Acceptable to God

  1230. Through Jesus Christ

  1231. For it stands

  1232. In scripture

  1233. Behold

  1234. I'm allaying

  1235. In Zion

  1236. A stone

  1237. A cornerstone

  1238. Chosen and precious

  1239. And whomever

  1240. Believes in him

  1241. Will not be put

  1242. To shame

  1243. So the honor

  1244. Is for you

  1245. Who believe

  1246. But for those

  1247. Who do not

  1248. Believe

  1249. The stone

  1250. That the builders

  1251. Rejected

  1252. Has become

  1253. The cornerstone

  1254. And a stone

  1255. Of stumbling

  1256. And a rock

  1257. Of offense

  1258. They stumble

  1259. Because they

  1260. Disobey the word

  1261. As they were

  1262. Destined

  1263. To do

  1264. So we're

  1265. Being built up

  1266. Into a spiritual

  1267. House

  1268. We're not

  1269. Building

  1270. Houses

  1271. It's not

  1272. The point

  1273. Of us

  1274. To build

  1275. Elaborate

  1276. Grand

  1277. Buildings

  1278. To God

  1279. It's us

  1280. We're being

  1281. Built up

  1282. As a spiritual

  1283. House

  1284. And for those

  1285. Of us

  1286. Who place

  1287. Our faith

  1288. In Christ

  1289. Jesus

  1290. Is the

  1291. Cornerstone

  1292. And we

  1293. Will not

  1294. Be put

  1295. To shame

  1296. Verse 9

  1297. But you

  1298. Are a chosen

  1299. Race

  1300. A royal

  1301. Priesthood

  1302. A holy

  1303. Nation

  1304. A people

  1305. For his

  1306. Own possession

  1307. That you

  1308. May proclaim

  1309. The excellencies

  1310. Of him

  1311. Who called

  1312. You out

  1313. Of darkness

  1314. Into his

  1315. Marvelous

  1316. Light

  1317. There is

  1318. The work

  1319. We may

  1320. Proclaim

  1321. The excellencies

  1322. Of him

  1323. Who has

  1324. Called us

  1325. Out of

  1326. Darkness

  1327. And into

  1328. His

  1329. Marvelous

  1330. Light

  1331. Once you

  1332. Were not

  1333. A people

  1334. But now

  1335. You are

  1336. God's

  1337. People

  1338. Once you

  1339. Had not

  1340. Received

  1341. Mercy

  1342. But now

  1343. You have

  1344. Received

  1345. Mercy

  1346. Beloved

  1347. I urge

  1348. You as

  1349. Soldiers

  1350. And exiles

  1351. To abstain

  1352. From the

  1353. Passions

  1354. Of the

  1355. Flesh

  1356. Which wage

  1357. War

  1358. Against your

  1359. Soul

  1360. Keep your

  1361. Conduct

  1362. Among the

  1363. Gentiles

  1364. Honorable

  1365. So that

  1366. When they

  1367. Speak

  1368. Against you

  1369. As evildoers

  1370. They may

  1371. See your

  1372. Good deeds

  1373. And glorify

  1374. God

  1375. On the

  1376. Day of

  1377. Visitation

  1378. This is

  1379. The work

  1380. That's

  1381. Before

  1382. Us

  1383. Have

  1384. We seen

  1385. The providence

  1386. Of God

  1387. I sure

  1388. Hope so

  1389. We see it

  1390. In the story

  1391. Of Nehemiah

  1392. We see it

  1393. In the personal

  1394. Work of

  1395. Jesus Christ

  1396. We're given

  1397. The promises

  1398. Of scripture

  1399. Whether or

  1400. Not you

  1401. Feel it

  1402. Day to

  1403. Day

  1404. You're being

  1405. Carried along

  1406. On the

  1407. Providence

  1408. Current

  1409. It's happening

  1410. Even now

  1411. You're here

  1412. For a very

  1413. Specific reason

  1414. Not just by

  1415. Happenstance

  1416. Did you show

  1417. Up today

  1418. God brought

  1419. You along

  1420. By his

  1421. Providence

  1422. To be here

  1423. Today

  1424. So do

  1425. Do you

  1426. Have a

  1427. Plan

  1428. I'll make

  1429. This

  1430. Really

  1431. Simple

  1432. Do you

  1433. Have a

  1434. Plan

  1435. For this

  1436. Week

  1437. About how

  1438. It is

  1439. That you're

  1440. Going to

  1441. Proclaim

  1442. The excellencies

  1443. Of God

  1444. That you're

  1445. Going to

  1446. Live out

  1447. Righteous

  1448. Lives

  1449. In front

  1450. Of

  1451. Evil

  1452. Doers

  1453. So they

  1454. May glorify

  1455. God

  1456. On the

  1457. Day of

  1458. Visitation

  1459. If you're

  1460. Part of

  1461. A community

  1462. Group

  1463. This is

  1464. The week

  1465. That we're

  1466. Not meeting

  1467. In order

  1468. To meet

  1469. With our

  1470. Neighbors

  1471. Do you

  1472. Have a

  1473. Plan yet

  1474. For who

  1475. You're

  1476. Going to

  1477. Meet

  1478. With

  1479. Who

  1480. You're

  1481. Going to

  1482. Work

  1483. Toward

  1484. Sharing

  1485. The gospel

  1486. With

  1487. You should

  1488. Plan

  1489. You should

  1490. Set up

  1491. Time

  1492. Specific

  1493. Times

  1494. To meet

  1495. With people

  1496. To build

  1497. Relationships

  1498. Find strategies

  1499. For turning

  1500. Conversations

  1501. To spiritual

  1502. Ones

  1503. That you

  1504. Might share

  1505. The goodness

  1506. Of our

  1507. Lord

  1508. Make

  1509. Plans

  1510. Do you

  1511. Know that

  1512. Our church

  1513. Has a

  1514. Plan

  1515. We call

  1516. It the

  1517. Plan

  1518. Of

  1519. Action

  1520. For

  1521. 2013

  1522. Here

  1523. It is

  1524. Some of

  1525. You may

  1526. Or may

  1527. Not

  1528. Have

  1529. Actually

  1530. Seen

  1531. This

  1532. Or may

  1533. Have

  1534. Forgotten

  1535. Already

  1536. That it

  1537. Exists

  1538. It's

  1539. Beautiful

  1540. Isn't

  1541. It

  1542. We'll

  1543. Present

  1544. Another

  1545. One

  1546. In

  1547. October

  1548. The way

  1549. In which

  1550. We believe

  1551. God

  1552. Is

  1553. Directing

  1554. Us

  1555. There

  1556. Are

  1557. Some

  1558. Men

  1559. In

  1560. This

  1561. Church

  1562. That

  1563. Have

  1564. Gone

  1565. Out

  1566. At

  1567. Night

  1568. And

  1569. We've

  1570. Surveyed

  1571. The

  1572. Wall

  1573. And

  1574. We've

  1575. Come

  1576. Up

  1577. With

  1578. A

  1579. Plan

  1580. For

  1581. This

  1582. Year

  1583. We're

  1584. Going

  1585. !

  1586. To be

  1587. Coming

  1588. Up

  1589. With

  1590. One

  1591. For

  1592. Next

  1593. !

  1594. Year

  1595. A

  1596. Way

  1597. It

  1598. And

  1599. Our

  1600. Calendar

  1601. Comes

  1602. Out

  1603. Of

  1604. The

  1605. Way

  1606. In

  1607. Which

  1608. We

  1609. Believe

  1610. God

  1611. Is

  1612. Leading

  1613. Us

  1614. So

  1615. Prayer

  1616. Planning

  1617. And

  1618. Providence

  1619. I hope

  1620. That

  1621. These

  1622. Are

  1623. Realities

  1624. In

  1625. Your

  1626. Life

  1627. Let's

  1628. Pray

  1629. Together
