  1. One time there has been some movements back to Israel.

  2. About 90 years now they've been back in the land.

  3. And Nehemiah finds out from his brother that the wall has yet to be rebuilt around the city.

  4. In fact, the king that he serves issued an edict 13 years prior to stop the building of said wall.

  5. As the inhabitants of the area, more than likely, Sambalat and Tobiah, that we're going to talk a bit about today,

  6. let him know what was happening in the land.

  7. And he saw it as an affront to his kingship.

  8. And so he put a stop to the wall.

  9. But the fact that this wall had yet to be built really grieved Nehemiah.

  10. Because the glory of God was being belittled in this way.

  11. The people of God's condition was the visible way in which God was praised in this day.

  12. And the fact that they were still living in a ruined city meant that Nehemiah's God didn't appear so great.

  13. And notice my careful wording.

  14. He didn't appear so great.

  15. And so Nehemiah was grieved by this and he prayed.

  16. We saw that in chapter 1.

  17. I introduced the Latin phrase to you sine qua non, without which nothing.

  18. He knew that if this work was going to get done, it had to be a movement of God.

  19. That he could not accomplish it on his own.

  20. And so he prayed.

  21. But even though he recognized that God's providence must come into play,

  22. God must be in control of what was going to happen, he planned.

  23. So we saw that as well, that he set forth a plan that he could present to the king.

  24. And we saw then in the middle of verse 8 of chapter 2,

  25. And the king granted me what I asked, for the good hand of my God was upon me.

  26. We see God bringing about this great work of bringing back together the people,

  27. using Nehemiah to go back to lead them.

  28. And so we talked last week about the actual work.

  29. We looked at chapter 3, and I apologize to you for breaking a little bit from the flow of what's happening here.

  30. But we talked through chapter 3 of this great list of these men and women who worked hard to rebuild the wall.

  31. And we talked about how it was that they did in fact work,

  32. and that they worked without regard to their positions, to their gender, their zip code.

  33. Some of them were from outlying cities.

  34. They did their fair share.

  35. You remember some of them did more than just a section of the wall.

  36. My favorite being a perfumer who built two sections of the wall.

  37. Or their skill sets.

  38. These weren't masons.

  39. They carried out various tasks.

  40. Rulers and priests that worked on this wall.

  41. So we're going to look today at the very end of chapter 2, which we bounced over before, verse 19 and 20.

  42. And then chapter 4.

  43. We're going to look at the way they worked in the face of opposition.

  44. It would be nice if we came to this point in the story.

  45. They get to work.

  46. They get this mind for it.

  47. They see that the good hand of God is with Nehemiah and the work before them.

  48. And they strengthen their hands.

  49. And then the rest of the story we read,

  50. And they built a magnificent wall.

  51. And it was wonderful.

  52. And that's the end of the story.

  53. It would be a nice way to read it.

  54. That would be an encouragement to me in my own life.

  55. I have a work that's been set before me.

  56. I'd kind of like the story to play out that way.

  57. Because that would mean that things are just going to go good.

  58. I've strengthened my hands.

  59. I'm ready to do the work God's putting for me.

  60. And it's just going to go really well.

  61. The story's going to go great in that way.

  62. But that's not what we see happening here.

  63. They end up having to work in the face of great opposition.

  64. Remembering that they were motivated by providence.

  65. Chapter 2, verse 18.

  66. Nehemiah reports the hand of my God that had been upon me for good.

  67. You remember that when God's people attempt to do God's work in His way,

  68. there will always be opposition.

  69. This world hates the ways of God.

  70. So when God's people attempt to do God's work in His way,

  71. notice the careful wording there.

  72. Things can go real well for you sometimes if you're not doing things in God's way.

  73. But when God's people attempt to do God's work in His way,

  74. there will always be opposition.

  75. My mind was drawn to 2 Timothy 3.12 where Paul wrote,

  76. Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.

  77. You remember as we're looking at this story, it's certainly a historical account.

  78. It's not an allegory.

  79. But we in some ways can take it allegorically for our own living.

  80. We are now being built up into a temple, a holy habitation for God.

  81. And so the work before us is not to build a wall, to build buildings.

  82. The work before us is to build up the church.

  83. To be holy and to bring about holiness in the lives of others.

  84. To be disciple-making disciples.

  85. And so 2 Timothy 3.12 comes together for us then.

  86. Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.

  87. Will face opposition.

  88. So let's read together.

  89. I'm going to help us skip around just a little bit.

  90. Beginning in chapter 2, verse 19.

  91. But when Sanballat the Horonite and Tobiah the Ammonite servant and Geshem the Arab heard of it,

  92. they jeered at us and despised us and said,

  93. What is this thing that you are doing?

  94. Are you rebelling against the king?

  95. Then I replied to them,

  96. The God of heaven will make us prosper,

  97. and we his servants will arise and build.

  98. But you have no portion or right or claim in Jerusalem.

  99. Now let's just pause there before we go to chapter 4.

  100. Firstly, I love the names of our antagonists in the story.

  101. Sanballat and Tobiah.

  102. I'm glad I get to say them over and over again this morning.

  103. We see some other antagonists.

  104. They're the primary ones, but we also see Geshem here.

  105. Later in chapter 4, we see the Arabs, the Ammonites, and the Ashdodites

  106. all rise up against the work that's happening in Israel.

  107. But pay a close attention before we move on to chapter 4

  108. at the response, which I just love.

  109. Then I replied to them,

  110. The God of heaven will make us prosper.

  111. By his providential hand, he will make us proper.

  112. And we his servants will arise and build.

  113. Flying in the face of their objection to the building.

  114. The God of heaven will make us prosper.

  115. We will arise and build.

  116. And he says to them,

  117. But you have no portion or right or claim in Jerusalem.

  118. Now it's likely that there were rulers in Jerusalem

  119. that were bowing to Sanballat and Tobiah.

  120. More than likely, the Techoites that we saw in chapter 3

  121. that would not stoop to serve their Lord

  122. had a pact, had an agreement with Sanballat,

  123. and therefore they wouldn't serve the work of God.

  124. Nehemiah is very careful to say to them,

  125. But you have no portion or right or claim in Jerusalem.

  126. Get out of the way.

  127. God and his people are rebuilding the wall.

  128. Chapter 4.

  129. Bear with me.

  130. Now, when Sanballat heard that they were building the wall,

  131. he was angry and greatly enraged,

  132. and he jeered at the Jews.

  133. And he said in the presence of his brothers

  134. and of the army of Samaria,

  135. What are these feeble Jews doing?

  136. Will they restore it for themselves?

  137. Will they sacrifice?

  138. Will they finish up in a day?

  139. Will they revive the stones out of the heaps of rubbish

  140. and burned ones at that?

  141. Tobiah the Ammonite was beside him,

  142. and he said,

  143. Yes, what are they building?

  144. If a fox goes up on it,

  145. he will break down their stone wall.

  146. Hear, O our God,

  147. for we are despised.

  148. Turn back their taunt on their own heads

  149. and give them up to be plundered in a land

  150. where they are captives.

  151. Do not cover their guilt,

  152. and let not their sin be blotted out from your sight,

  153. for they have provoked you to anger

  154. in the presence of the builders.

  155. So we built the wall,

  156. and all the wall was joined together

  157. to half its height,

  158. for the people had a mind to work.

  159. But when Sambalat and Tobiah

  160. and the Arabs and the Ammonites

  161. and the Ashdodites heard

  162. that the repairing of the walls of Jerusalem

  163. was going forward

  164. and that the breaches were beginning to be closed,

  165. the gaps were being closed,

  166. they were very angry.

  167. And they all plotted together

  168. to come and fight against Jerusalem

  169. and to cause confusion in it.

  170. And we prayed to our God

  171. and set a guard as a protection against them

  172. day and night.

  173. In Judah it was said,

  174. The strength of those who bear the burdens is failing.

  175. There is too much rubble.

  176. By ourselves we will not be able to rebuild the wall.

  177. And our enemies said,

  178. They will not know or see

  179. till we come among them

  180. and kill them and stop the work.

  181. At that time the Jews who lived near them

  182. came from all directions

  183. and said to us ten times,

  184. You must return to us.

  185. So in the lowest parts of the space behind the wall

  186. in open places,

  187. I stationed the people by their clans

  188. with their swords,

  189. their spears,

  190. and their bows.

  191. And I looked and arose

  192. and said to the nobles

  193. and to the officials

  194. and to the rest of the people,

  195. Do not be afraid of them.

  196. Remember the Lord

  197. who is great and awesome

  198. and fight for your brothers,

  199. your sons,

  200. your daughters,

  201. your wives,

  202. and your homes.

  203. When our enemies heard

  204. that it was known to us

  205. that God had frustrated their plan,

  206. we all returned to the wall.

  207. Each to his work.

  208. From that day on,

  209. half of my servants

  210. worked on construction

  211. and half held the spears,

  212. shields,

  213. bows,

  214. and coats of mail.

  215. And the leaders stood behind

  216. the whole house of Judah

  217. who were building on the wall.

  218. Those who carried burdens

  219. were loaded in such a way

  220. that each labored on the work

  221. with one hand

  222. and held his weapon

  223. with the other.

  224. And each of the builders

  225. had a sword strapped at his side

  226. while he built.

  227. The man who sounded the trumpet

  228. was beside me.

  229. And I said to the nobles

  230. and to the officials

  231. and to the rest of the people,

  232. The work is great

  233. and widely spread

  234. and we are separated

  235. on the wall

  236. far from one another.

  237. In the place where you hear

  238. the sound of the trumpet,

  239. rally to us there.

  240. Our God will fight for us.

  241. So we labored at the work

  242. and half of them

  243. held the spears

  244. from the break of dawn

  245. until the stars came out.

  246. I also said to the people

  247. at that time,

  248. that every man and his servant

  249. pass the night within Jerusalem

  250. that they may be a guard

  251. for us by night

  252. and may labor by day.

  253. So neither I nor my brothers

  254. nor my servants

  255. nor the men of the guard

  256. who followed me,

  257. none of us took off our clothes.

  258. Each kept his weapon

  259. at his right hand.

  260. Now in chapter 5,

  261. we see a little interjection

  262. and Kyle actually will be telling you

  263. a bit more about the work

  264. that's happening

  265. even as the work on the wall

  266. is taking place.

  267. But then in chapter 6,

  268. we see some oppression

  269. that's brought against Nehemiah himself.

  270. Originally, I planned to go this far,

  271. but I chopped it this morning

  272. because it was just way too much.

  273. But turn your attention

  274. to chapter 6, verses 15 and 16.

  275. So the wall was finished

  276. on the 25th day of the month.

  277. It lulled in 52 days.

  278. And when all our enemies heard of it,

  279. all the nations around us

  280. were afraid and fell greatly

  281. in their own esteem.

  282. For they perceived

  283. that this work had been accomplished

  284. with the help of our God.

  285. Join me in prayer.

  286. Father God, we thank you

  287. for your inspired word.

  288. This is a record of an event

  289. that happened many thousands

  290. of years ago.

  291. But it was written

  292. for our encouragement today.

  293. I believe that you have brought

  294. all of us together today.

  295. And that you intend to speak

  296. to all of our hearts.

  297. And so I just ask

  298. that you will.

  299. That you will show us

  300. how it is

  301. that the work before us,

  302. even in the face of opposition,

  303. can and will be completed.

  304. We praise you

  305. for your words to us.

  306. That we have

  307. a glimpse,

  308. a window in

  309. to the mind of the Almighty.

  310. And we pray this in Christ's name.

  311. Amen.

  312. So there are two types

  313. of opposition

  314. that took place here.

  315. And I want to kind of

  316. bring those to you.

  317. Firstly,

  318. physical opposition.

  319. We see chapter 4,

  320. verse 7 and 8.

  321. We see Sambalat and Tobiah,

  322. the Arabs,

  323. the Ammonites,

  324. and the Ashdodites.

  325. They hear that the progression

  326. is still happening.

  327. Even though there's been

  328. some jeering,

  329. some making fun of,

  330. they are still beginning

  331. to build the wall.

  332. In fact,

  333. they're starting to close

  334. in the gaps of the wall.

  335. It's been completed

  336. to half of its height.

  337. And they become angry.

  338. And they plot together

  339. to come and fight

  340. against Jerusalem.

  341. There's this physical opposition

  342. that's presented before them.

  343. What is their response to this?

  344. What is their response?

  345. They enter into,

  346. this is what we read

  347. through chapter 4,

  348. into a state of perpetual readiness.

  349. They got prepared.

  350. They got ready

  351. for the fight that may come.

  352. In fact,

  353. in case you didn't catch it,

  354. we turn from the end

  355. of verse 14 to 15,

  356. they actually stood

  357. in the low gaps

  358. behind the wall,

  359. all of them ready to fight.

  360. They hear rumor

  361. that a fight is coming

  362. and they armed themselves

  363. and they got ready.

  364. They ceased building

  365. on the wall

  366. to stop

  367. and to fight.

  368. But in verse 15,

  369. when they heard

  370. that their enemies

  371. had heard

  372. that the plan

  373. had been confounded,

  374. that they had stood guard,

  375. that they knew

  376. they were coming,

  377. they go back

  378. to the work.

  379. And they go back

  380. to the work

  381. in some very interesting ways.

  382. Nehemiah comes up

  383. with some brilliant plans

  384. for how they're going to work.

  385. Half of his servants

  386. stand guard

  387. while the other half

  388. are working.

  389. Those that are working

  390. carry loads

  391. in such a way

  392. that they can carry

  393. a weapon in one hand

  394. and a load,

  395. and remember a load

  396. in this case

  397. is probably heavy stones

  398. and mortar

  399. and things to fill in,

  400. the gaps on the wall.

  401. In the other hand,

  402. he has people

  403. standing by

  404. with all of the armaments

  405. they would need,

  406. the coat of mail,

  407. the things they wouldn't wear

  408. while they were working.

  409. They stood by

  410. holding on to those things

  411. so that if they needed them,

  412. they could drop

  413. what they were doing,

  414. put on the armor,

  415. and fight

  416. for the sake of the city.

  417. He set up a plan

  418. for how they would

  419. rally together.

  420. They're spread out

  421. amongst this wall,

  422. this great parameter

  423. of the city Jerusalem.

  424. So he comes up

  425. with a plan

  426. to blow a trumpet

  427. and everybody

  428. to gather

  429. at that place.

  430. You even see record

  431. of the fact

  432. that he had everybody

  433. stay inside the city,

  434. not return to their homes

  435. outside of the city,

  436. but rest and stay inside

  437. in case they needed

  438. to fight at night.

  439. And that he even records

  440. in verse 23

  441. that they didn't

  442. take off their clothes,

  443. which was not

  444. for the sake of grossness,

  445. but just to let us know

  446. that they were always ready.

  447. They never disrobed to sleep.

  448. They always kept ready

  449. to fight and to work.

  450. For 52 days,

  451. they did this type of thing.

  452. So they got ready

  453. in the state

  454. of perpetual readiness.

  455. But before that,

  456. before they ever did that,

  457. what do we see them

  458. stopping to do?

  459. They prayed.

  460. Right?

  461. Sine qua non.

  462. Without which nothing.

  463. Chapter 4, verse 9.

  464. And we prayed to our God

  465. and set a guard

  466. as a protection.

  467. And set that word there,

  468. the little phrase

  469. that sits in between there,

  470. means nevertheless.

  471. We prayed to our God

  472. knowing full well

  473. that God's good hand

  474. was upon this work.

  475. His providence

  476. was draped over

  477. the work that was

  478. happening here.

  479. But nevertheless,

  480. we set a guard.

  481. We did our part.

  482. We did the planning.

  483. The things that needed

  484. to be done.

  485. It's a bit of a tension.

  486. And I think that most of us

  487. here feel this tension.

  488. We've seen the sovereignty

  489. of God in scriptures

  490. and we've seen the

  491. responsibility of man.

  492. I feel like I've talked

  493. about it at length.

  494. But recognize that this

  495. tension is everywhere

  496. in the scriptures.

  497. It doesn't just exist here.

  498. Seeing the people of God

  499. praying, kneeling,

  500. asking God to work,

  501. knowing that without him

  502. doing the work,

  503. it's not going to get

  504. accomplished at all.

  505. You see even here

  506. that we see in verse 20

  507. as Nehemiah's encouraging

  508. the people,

  509. talking about the rallying

  510. of the people.

  511. He's basically saying to

  512. them,

  513. in the place where you

  514. hear the sound of the

  515. trumpet,

  516. come fight.

  517. And his sixth sentence

  518. is,

  519. our God will fight for us.

  520. This full recognition

  521. that God was going to

  522. have to accomplish it.

  523. And yet,

  524. we also see that they

  525. knew that they were

  526. the means by which God

  527. would accomplish it.

  528. They were the means

  529. to the end.

  530. This tension is found

  531. all throughout the

  532. scriptures.

  533. Begin to read the Bible

  534. with this in mind

  535. and notice all of the

  536. places that happens,

  537. particularly in Paul's

  538. language.

  539. He always wants to be

  540. so careful as he

  541. presents the mightiness

  542. of our God that he

  543. doesn't leave out the

  544. fact that we're

  545. responsible.

  546. And as he presents to

  547. us the fact that we're

  548. responsible and we have

  549. a part to play,

  550. he never ever leaves it

  551. hanging without wrapping

  552. it up with the

  553. sovereignty of God.

  554. One example,

  555. 1 Corinthians 15,

    1 Corinthians 15:10

  556. verse 10.

  557. He says,

  558. By the grace of God,

  559. I am what I am.

  560. And his grace toward me

  561. was not in vain.

  562. On the contrary,

  563. I worked harder than

  564. any of them,

  565. though it was not I,

  566. but the grace of God

  567. that is with me.

  568. It talks about the

  569. grace of God,

  570. the sovereignty of God

  571. and him being who he

  572. is.

  573. But then he presents

  574. that he worked very

  575. hard at being who he

  576. is.

  577. But just so that we're

  578. not unclear,

  579. he wraps it back up

  580. to say,

  581. but it was not I,

  582. it was the grace of

  583. God that is with me.

  584. This tension,

  585. if it feels that way

  586. for you,

  587. it does for me,

  588. it makes my mind

  589. want to split open

  590. sometimes,

  591. exists all throughout

  592. the scriptures.

  593. God uses his people

  594. to accomplish his will,

  595. but it is indeed

  596. God who works.

  597. So in face of this

  598. physical opposition,

  599. the possibility that

  600. the wall would be

  601. stopped by an attack,

  602. they pray,

  603. they make a plan,

  604. they prepare,

  605. they stand at the ready

  606. perpetually

  607. so that they can

  608. complete the wall.

  609. But there's a

  610. greater danger,

  611. a greater opposition

  612. that face them here,

  613. and that is a

  614. spiritual opposition.

  615. Presented to you

  616. before that the

  617. problems we have

  618. as people are

  619. going to be one

  620. of two types of

  621. problems.

  622. They're either going

  623. to be physical or

  624. they're going to be

  625. spiritual.

  626. Ultimately,

  627. the way we think

  628. is affected by our

  629. spirit.

  630. You see here,

  631. there's some things

  632. happening with them.

  633. You see discouragement

  634. taking place.

  635. And you see fear.

  636. Discouragement,

  637. chapter 4,

  638. verse 10.

  639. In Judah it was said,

  640. the strength of those

  641. who bear the burdens

  642. !

  643. The burdens is failing!

  644. There is too much

  645. rubble!

  646. By ourselves we will

  647. not be able to

  648. rebuild the wall!

  649. See that discouragement

  650. beginning to set in

  651. on them.

  652. They're being taunted

  653. by the outsiders.

  654. My mind goes to

  655. Noah building his

  656. boat and all his

  657. friends coming and

  658. making fun of him

  659. for building a boat

  660. in the middle of

  661. the desert.

  662. Yet he built on

  663. all the same.

  664. Here you see them

  665. being taunted,

  666. verses 1-3,

  667. by Sambalat.

  668. He jeers at the

  669. Jews.

  670. And he said in the

  671. presence of his

  672. brothers in the

  673. army of Samaria,

  674. what are these

  675. feeble Jews doing?

  676. Will they restore

  677. it for themselves?

  678. These are rhetorical

  679. questions.

  680. Will they sacrifice?

  681. Meaning,

  682. will they get it

  683. set up in a way

  684. in which they can

  685. then turn to

  686. temple service?

  687. Will they finish

  688. up in a day?

  689. Will they revive

  690. the stones out of

  691. the heaps of

  692. rubbish and

  693. burned ones at

  694. that?

  695. Mox the work

  696. that they're about

  697. to be doing.

  698. And then his

  699. buddy Tobiah

  700. pipes in and

  701. says, yes, what

  702. are they building?

  703. If a fox goes up

  704. on it, he will

  705. break down their

  706. stone wall,

  707. meaning it doesn't

  708. have structure.

  709. It's a horribly

  710. built wall.

  711. And even if a

  712. fox were to run

  713. up on it, it

  714. would just collapse.

  715. They're being

  716. taunted in this

  717. way, and

  718. discouragement has

  719. begun to set in.

  720. How is it that

  721. they bear up under

  722. that type of

  723. discouragement?

  724. You may have

  725. experienced this in

  726. your work for the

  727. Lord.

  728. Remember the way

  729. that Nehemiah's

  730. prayer begins in

  731. chapter 1,

  732. verse 5.

  733. He says,

  734. O Lord,

  735. God of heaven.

  736. And I presented

  737. to you that this

  738. Hebrew phrase,

  739. was a Hebrew

  740. phrase that had

  741. become especially

  742. important to the

  743. Israelites as they

  744. were in Babylonian

  745. captivity, as they

  746. had spent all of

  747. this time abroad.

  748. And it meant

  749. simply that their

  750. God was a God

  751. that ruled over

  752. everything.

  753. Remember chapter 2,

  754. verse 20,

  755. Nehemiah's response

  756. to Sambalot,

  757. Tobiah,

  758. and Geshem,

  759. the God of heaven,

  760. same language,

  761. will make us

  762. prosper.

  763. They got through

  764. this discouragement

  765. by trusting in

  766. the sovereign

  767. goodness of God.

  768. They would have

  769. been familiar with

  770. Psalm 135,

  771. 5 and 6,

  772. For I know that

  773. the Lord is great,

  774. and that our Lord

  775. is above all gods.

  776. Whatever the Lord

  777. pleases,

  778. He does,

  779. in heaven and on

  780. earth,

  781. in the seas,

  782. and all the

  783. deeps.

  784. They knew

  785. that the good

  786. hand of God

  787. had been upon

  788. Nehemiah for

  789. the good work.

  790. This is the

  791. language we're

  792. seeing up until

  793. this point.

  794. They knew that

  795. God intended

  796. to complete the

  797. wall with

  798. them,

  799. and therefore,

  800. they knew it

  801. would get

  802. done.

  803. Let me read to

  804. you a little bit

  805. from Spurgeon

  806. on the topic of

  807. God's sovereignty.

  808. That's what we're

  809. talking about here.

  810. There is no

  811. attribute more

  812. comforting to

  813. His children than

  814. that of God's

  815. sovereignty.

  816. Under the most

  817. adverse circumstances,

  818. in the most

  819. severe trials,

  820. they believe that

  821. sovereignty has

  822. ordained their

  823. afflictions, that

  824. sovereignty overrules

  825. them, and that

  826. sovereignty will

  827. sanctify them all.

  828. There is nothing

  829. for which the

  830. children ought more

  831. earnestly to

  832. contend than the

  833. doctrine of their

  834. master over all

  835. creation.

  836. The kingship of

  837. God over all

  838. the works of

  839. His own hands,

  840. the throne of

  841. God and His

  842. right to sit

  843. upon that

  844. throne.

  845. On the other

  846. hand, there is

  847. no doctrine more

  848. hated by

  849. worldings, no

  850. truth of which

  851. they have made

  852. such a football

  853. as the great,

  854. stupendous, but

  855. yet most certain

  856. doctrine of the

  857. sovereignty of

  858. the infinite

  859. Jehovah.

  860. Men will allow

  861. God to be

  862. everywhere except

  863. on His throne.

  864. They will allow

  865. Him to be in

  866. His workshop to

  867. fashion worlds

  868. and make stars.

  869. They will allow

  870. Him to be in

  871. His almanry to

  872. dispense His

  873. alms and bestow

  874. His bounties.

  875. They will allow

  876. Him to sustain

  877. the earth and

  878. bear up the

  879. pillars thereof,

  880. or light the

  881. lamps of heaven,

  882. or rule the

  883. waves of the

  884. ever-moving

  885. ocean.

  886. But when God

  887. ascends His

  888. throne, His

  889. creatures then

  890. gnash their

  891. teeth.

  892. But we

  893. proclaim and

  894. enthrone God,

  895. and His right

  896. to do as He

  897. wills with His

  898. own, to dispose of

  899. His creatures as

  900. He thinks well,

  901. without consulting

  902. them in the

  903. matter, then it

  904. is that we are

  905. hissed and

  906. execrated, and

  907. then it is that

  908. men turn a deaf

  909. ear to us.

  910. For God on His

  911. throne is not

  912. the God they

  913. love, but it

  914. is the God upon

  915. the throne that

  916. we love.

  917. It is God upon

  918. His throne whom

  919. we trust.

  920. That is the

  921. great encouragement

  922. judgment, when

  923. we are feeling

  924. discouraged, that

  925. our God reigns

  926. over the

  927. work.

  928. We talked

  929. about how

  930. Nehemiah's

  931. prayer in

  932. chapter 1 was

  933. saturated in

  934. the Word of

  935. God.

  936. He knew what

  937. God attempted

  938. to accomplish

  939. with His

  940. people, and

  941. therefore he

  942. could confidently

  943. lay hold of

  944. those promises.

  945. Beloved, we

  946. must study God's

  947. Word and know

  948. His promises.

  949. If we know

  950. them, we can

  951. know that

  952. they are

  953. sure.

  954. The second

  955. condition I see

  956. here in

  957. chapter 4 is

  958. fear.

  959. Spiritual

  960. opposition to

  961. them is this

  962. fear, right?

  963. There's a great

  964. force, a mighty

  965. force.

  966. The armies of

  967. Samaria are

  968. going to come

  969. against them and

  970. stop the building

  971. of the wall.

  972. Chapter 4, 11,

  973. and 12 says,

  974. And our enemy

  975. said they will

  976. not know or

  977. see till we

  978. come among

  979. them and kill

  980. them and stop

  981. the work.

  982. Then you see in

  983. verse 12,

  984. at that time

  985. the Jews who

  986. lived near

  987. them came

  988. from all

  989. directions and

  990. said to us

  991. ten times,

  992. you must

  993. return to

  994. us.

  995. What's happening

  996. is the people

  997. who are living

  998. in the perimeter

  999. who aren't

  1000. coming and

  1001. building the

  1002. wall are

  1003. coming to

  1004. the city

  1005. and they're

  1006. saying,

  1007. listen, we

  1008. are hearing

  1009. news that

  1010. they are going

  1011. to come and

  1012. kill you.

  1013. They're forming

  1014. armies to

  1015. come and kill

  1016. you and stop

  1017. the building

  1018. of the wall.

  1019. Please come

  1020. back to the

  1021. suburbs.

  1022. Come on

  1023. back out to

  1024. the houses

  1025. and live.

  1026. Let's tend

  1027. our sheep.

  1028. Let's look

  1029. after our

  1030. gardens and

  1031. stop the

  1032. building of the

  1033. ten times.

  1034. There's an

  1035. urgency here

  1036. to get them

  1037. to return.

  1038. So how do

  1039. they stand

  1040. up?

  1041. How do they

  1042. work in

  1043. light of

  1044. that type

  1045. of opposition?

  1046. You see in

  1047. verse 6 of

  1048. chapter 4

  1049. this record

  1050. that the

  1051. people had

  1052. a mind

  1053. to work.

  1054. The Hebrew

  1055. word there

  1056. means so much

  1057. more than

  1058. just mind.

  1059. It means that

  1060. they had

  1061. hearts to

  1062. work.

  1063. It means that

  1064. their very

  1065. being was set

  1066. to the work.

  1067. In chapter

  1068. 2 we saw

  1069. that they

  1070. strengthened

  1071. their hands

  1072. and had

  1073. that same

  1074. feeling to

  1075. it.

  1076. That they

  1077. made

  1078. themselves

  1079. resolute

  1080. for the

  1081. work that

  1082. was ahead

  1083. of them.

  1084. And then

  1085. you see

  1086. Nehemiah's

  1087. response in

  1088. verse 14.

  1089. Do not

  1090. be afraid

  1091. of them.

  1092. Remember

  1093. what?

  1094. The

  1095. Lord.

  1096. Who is

  1097. great

  1098. and

  1099. awesome.

  1100. We saw

  1101. that same

  1102. language in

  1103. his prayer

  1104. in chapter

  1105. 1.

  1106. Who is

  1107. great and

  1108. awesome.

  1109. Who rules

  1110. over everything

  1111. his greatness.

  1112. Who stands

  1113. above,

  1114. who has

  1115. power over

  1116. everything

  1117. and is

  1118. awesome.

  1119. Strikes

  1120. fear in

  1121. the hearts

  1122. of his

  1123. enemies.

  1124. This is

  1125. what we are

  1126. to remember

  1127. when we're

  1128. afraid.

  1129. Remember the

  1130. Lord who is

  1131. great and

  1132. awesome.

  1133. Psalm 28,

  1134. 7 and 8

  1135. says,

  1136. The Lord is

  1137. my strength

  1138. and my

  1139. shield.

  1140. In him

  1141. my heart

  1142. trusts and

  1143. I am

  1144. helped.

  1145. My heart

  1146. exults and

  1147. with song I

  1148. give thanks

  1149. to him.

  1150. The Lord

  1151. is the

  1152. strength of

  1153. his people.

  1154. He is

  1155. the saving

  1156. refuge of

  1157. his

  1158. anointed.

  1159. Jeremiah

    Jeremiah 32:40

  1160. 32,

  1161. verse 40,

  1162. I will

  1163. make with

  1164. them an

  1165. everlasting

  1166. covenant that

  1167. I will not

  1168. turn away

  1169. from doing

  1170. good to

  1171. them.

  1172. You

  1173. notice so

  1174. far as

  1175. our study

  1176. in Nehemiah

  1177. keep drawing

  1178. us back

  1179. to scripture

  1180. that they

  1181. would have

  1182. had.

  1183. I want you

  1184. to see that

  1185. these people

  1186. knew scriptures

  1187. of God.

  1188. They had

  1189. been given

  1190. to them.

  1191. They had

  1192. proper

  1193. motivation

  1194. by which

  1195. to do

  1196. this work

  1197. because they

  1198. trusted in

  1199. their sovereign

  1200. Lord.

  1201. So we saw

  1202. that the

  1203. wall was

  1204. completed.

  1205. That's why

  1206. I jumped

  1207. to chapter

  1208. 6.

  1209. So in

  1210. spite of

  1211. this

  1212. opposition,

  1213. both the

  1214. physical

  1215. and the

  1216. spiritual

  1217. opposition,

  1218. the work

  1219. continued.

  1220. And the

  1221. wall was

  1222. finished in

  1223. 52 days.

  1224. And when

  1225. all the

  1226. enemies

  1227. heard of

  1228. it,

  1229. verse 16,

  1230. all the

  1231. nations

  1232. around us

  1233. were afraid

  1234. and fell

  1235. greatly in

  1236. their own

  1237. esteem.

  1238. They said,

  1239. we are not

  1240. rulers of

  1241. this world.

  1242. We ought

  1243. not think

  1244. so highly

  1245. of ourselves

  1246. for they

  1247. perceived

  1248. that this

  1249. work had

  1250. been accomplished

  1251. with the

  1252. help of

  1253. our God.

  1254. So how

  1255. is it

  1256. then that

  1257. we should

  1258. work in

  1259. the face

  1260. of opposition?

  1261. We take

  1262. this narrative

  1263. and we

  1264. apply it

  1265. to our

  1266. very own

  1267. living.

  1268. Firstly,

  1269. we should

  1270. trust in

  1271. the sovereign

  1272. goodness of

  1273. God.

  1274. We should

  1275. trust in

  1276. the sovereign

  1277. goodness of

  1278. God as

  1279. His people.

  1280. As He is

  1281. redeeming the

  1282. church for

  1283. Himself,

  1284. we should

  1285. trust in

  1286. the sovereign

  1287. goodness of

  1288. our God.

  1289. Turn with

  1290. me to the

  1291. book of

  1292. Ephesians,

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  1293. chapter 2.

  1294. You can

  1295. leave Nehemiah

  1296. behind.

  1297. You don't

  1298. have to

  1299. mark it

  1300. with your

  1301. hand.

  1302. The very

  1303. greatest

  1304. expression to

  1305. us of

  1306. God's sovereign

  1307. goodness is

  1308. the person

  1309. and the

  1310. work of

  1311. Jesus Christ.

  1312. Christ

  1313. crucified and

  1314. resurrected on

  1315. our behalf.

  1316. Ephesians,

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  1317. chapter 2,

  1318. beginning in

  1319. verse 17.

  1320. He, being

  1321. Christ, came

  1322. and preached

  1323. peace to you

  1324. who are far

  1325. off and

  1326. peace to

  1327. those who

  1328. were near.

  1329. For through

  1330. Him we

  1331. both have

  1332. access in

  1333. one spirit

  1334. to the

  1335. Father.

  1336. So then you

  1337. are no longer

  1338. strangers and

  1339. aliens, but

  1340. you are fellow

  1341. citizens with

  1342. the saints and

  1343. members of

  1344. the household

  1345. of God,

  1346. built on the

  1347. foundation of

  1348. the apostles

  1349. and prophets,

  1350. Christ Jesus

  1351. Himself being

  1352. the cornerstone,

  1353. in whom the

  1354. whole structure

  1355. being joined

  1356. together grows

  1357. into a holy

  1358. temple in

  1359. the Lord.

  1360. In Him you

  1361. also are being

  1362. built together

  1363. into a dwelling

  1364. place for God

  1365. by the Spirit.

  1366. Catch all that

  1367. language.

  1368. Again, I've been

  1369. drawing you to

  1370. 1 Peter, but

  1371. here we see in

  1372. Ephesians Paul

  1373. using the same

  1374. type of language

  1375. about us being

  1376. built up into

  1377. a structure,

  1378. calls it here a

  1379. holy temple in

  1380. the Lord, a

  1381. dwelling place for

  1382. God by the

  1383. Spirit with

  1384. Jesus Christ

  1385. Himself being

  1386. the cornerstone.

  1387. Cornerstone was

  1388. significant.

  1389. It set all

  1390. things right.

  1391. It was the

  1392. measure by which

  1393. everything else

  1394. was taken.

  1395. It's how the

  1396. building came

  1397. together properly.

  1398. You can't miss

  1399. that.

  1400. The language of

  1401. cornerstone doesn't

  1402. make a lot of

  1403. sense to us.

  1404. Probably not even

  1405. to modern day

  1406. builders, but for

  1407. most of us we

  1408. don't build

  1409. buildings.

  1410. We don't know

  1411. what that would

  1412. even look like.

  1413. This was incredibly

  1414. significant language

  1415. to them.

  1416. It means that

  1417. without Christ,

  1418. and Christ

  1419. crucified and

  1420. resurrected, none

  1421. of this holds

  1422. together.

  1423. All of our

  1424. great efforts at

  1425. church and being

  1426. religious and

  1427. trying to build

  1428. something for God

  1429. is totally failed

  1430. apart from

  1431. Christ.

  1432. Remember that it's

  1433. through Him we

  1434. have access in

  1435. one Spirit to

  1436. the Father.

  1437. We're no longer

  1438. strangers and

  1439. aliens.

  1440. We are now part

  1441. of the household

  1442. of God, and

  1443. this is God's

  1444. sovereign goodness

  1445. to us.

  1446. we'll look

  1447. beyond and

  1448. go further

  1449. into some

  1450. of that reality

  1451. of God's

  1452. sovereign goodness

  1453. here momentarily.

  1454. Look on down

  1455. in the book of

  1456. Ephesians, or

  1457. over, depending

  1458. on your media

  1459. that you're using,

  1460. to chapter 6.

  1461. Paul begins to

  1462. conclude his letter

  1463. in this way,

  1464. verse 10,

  1465. looking at the

  1466. work that's ahead

  1467. of us, finally be

  1468. strong in the Lord

  1469. and in the strength

  1470. of His might.

  1471. Put on the whole

  1472. armor of God

  1473. that you may be

  1474. able to stand

  1475. against the schemes

  1476. of the devil.

  1477. For we do not

  1478. wrestle against

  1479. flesh and blood,

  1480. but against the

  1481. rulers, against

  1482. the authorities,

  1483. against the

  1484. cosmic powers

  1485. over this

  1486. present darkness,

  1487. against the

  1488. spiritual forces

  1489. of evil in

  1490. the heavenly

  1491. places.

  1492. There's our

  1493. challenge, there's

  1494. our opposition

  1495. to us.

  1496. Verse 13,

  1497. therefore take

  1498. up the whole

  1499. armor of God

  1500. that you may be

  1501. able to withstand

  1502. in the evil

  1503. day, and having

  1504. done all to

  1505. stand firm,

  1506. stand therefore

  1507. having fastened

  1508. on the belt of

  1509. truth, and having

  1510. put on the

  1511. breastplate of

  1512. righteousness, and

  1513. as shoes for

  1514. your feet,

  1515. having put on

  1516. the readiness

  1517. given by the

  1518. gospel of

  1519. peace.

  1520. In all

  1521. circumstances, take

  1522. up the shield

  1523. of faith with

  1524. which you can

  1525. extinguish all

  1526. the flaming

  1527. darts of the

  1528. evil one, and

  1529. take the helmet

  1530. of salvation and

  1531. the sword of the

  1532. spirit, which is

  1533. the word of God,

  1534. praying at all

  1535. times in the

  1536. spirit with all

  1537. prayer and

  1538. supplication, or

  1539. petitioning in

  1540. that way.

  1541. can you kind of

  1542. you can't

  1543. can you kind of

  1544. get the picture

  1545. I do of the

  1546. workers of the

  1547. wall in

  1548. Nehemiah's day

  1549. with a load on

  1550. one arm and

  1551. the sword in the

  1552. other hand or

  1553. the spear in the

  1554. other hand, they

  1555. got themselves ready

  1556. for this work that

1557. was ahead of us, and

  1558. here we see that

1559. we're to be strong in

  1560. the Lord and the

  1561. strength of his

  1562. might, and how do

  1563. we do that?

  1564. Right?

  1565. We put on these

  1566. things here called

  1567. the armor of God,

  1568. and notice what

  1569. they are, they're

  1570. truth, righteousness,

  1571. readiness, faith,

  1572. salvation, the

  1573. word of God, and

  1574. prayer.

1575. Now I wish we had

  1576. time to expound

  1577. this in its

  1578. entirety.

  1579. Someday we will

  1580. go through the

  1581. book of Ephesians

  1582. and we will do

  1583. that very thing.

  1584. There's so much

  1585. that all of this

  1586. means, but simply

  1587. we can simply

  1588. boil these things

  1589. down, probably in

  1590. an over simple

  1591. way, to say that

  1592. we need to know

  1593. the truth of God,

  1594. who we are in

  1595. Christ, the gospel,

  1596. right?

  1597. And we need to

  1598. pray.

  1599. The word of God

  1600. being the bread of

  1601. life, the prayer

  1602. being the breath of

  1603. life.

  1604. Remember those two

  1605. things.

  1606. The word of God

  1607. is the bread of

  1608. life.

  1609. It's our sustenance.

  1610. And prayer is the

  1611. breath of life.

  1612. I'll give you an

  1613. example from my

  1614. week.

  1615. I was feeling

  1616. rather discouraged

  1617. this week and it

  1618. wasn't something I

  1619. really realized was

  1620. happening until

  1621. later.

  1622. It worked its way

1623. kind of up out of

  1624. my heart and to

  1625. my head until I

  1626. kind of stopped and

  1627. assessed what was

  1628. going on with me.

  1629. But I had allowed

  1630. the father of lies

1631. to tell me a lie and

1632. I began to believe it.

1633. I just began to be

  1634. discouraged.

  1635. Totally unwarranted.

  1636. Completely unwarranted.

  1637. But discouraged about

  1638. the work that's

  1639. happening here at

  1640. Christ Family Church.

  1641. Saying that we're

  1642. never going to

  1643. accomplish some of

  1644. the goals that are

  1645. set out before us.

1646. That I feel so alone

  1647. in the work I'm

  1648. doing.

  1649. I'm inadequate for

  1650. the work I'm

  1651. doing.

  1652. And these lies began

  1653. to work around in

  1654. me.

  1655. And again, not up

  1656. here but down in

  1657. here.

  1658. And I just found

  1659. myself feeling really

  1660. unmotivated at the

  1661. beginning of this

  1662. week.

1663. Just kind of open up

  1664. to read and reading

  1665. Nehemiah and reading

  1666. just the narrative on

  1667. the surface.

  1668. I'm just going,

  1669. okay, they built the

  1670. wall.

  1671. They set a guard.

1672. What are we going to

  1673. talk about this Sunday?

  1674. How does this apply

  1675. to our lives?

  1676. I just don't know.

1677. So I'd close it and

  1678. I'd move on to

  1679. something else.

  1680. And just lacking this

  1681. real motivation.

  1682. It finally bubbled

  1683. up enough that I

  1684. realized I was acting

  1685. in this way.

1686. Why am I feeling so

  1687. unmotivated this week?

1688. Why can I not sit down

1689. and focus and get the

  1690. work done that's in

  1691. front of me?

  1692. And I realized that I

  1693. was being discouraged.

1694. I was believing all of

  1695. these lies that were

  1696. being told to me.

1697. And this is when God

  1698. really began to

  1699. minister to me with

  1700. the lives of these

  1701. people.

  1702. I had really forgotten

  1703. the gospel.

  1704. Forgotten who I was

  1705. in Christ.

  1706. And that's a complete

  1707. work of Him.

  1708. He has accomplished

  1709. it.

1710. He's done all of that.

  1711. Certainly God works

  1712. through faithful people,

1713. but it is God who works.

1714. I take great hope and

  1715. encouragement in my time

  1716. of discouragement in

1717. knowing that God has a

  1718. plan.

1719. And it will, in fact,

  1720. come to fruition.

  1721. salvation.

  1722. No doubt about that.

1723. We believe highly in the

  1724. sovereignty of God here,

  1725. not because it's our

  1726. particular thing, it's our

1727. flavor, we want to pick it

  1728. up, but because the

  1729. scriptures tell us that

  1730. God is sovereign.

1731. It's all over in here.

  1732. We believe in the

  1733. doctrines of grace, as

  1734. they're commonly called.

1735. Some of you may wrestle

  1736. with some of these.

  1737. I still do.

  1738. The famous tulip,

  1739. right?

  1740. Total depravity, who we

  1741. are.

  1742. Before Christ.

  1743. No good at all.

  1744. Sin has totally spoiled

  1745. us.

  1746. My righteousness prior to

  1747. Christ was as filthy

  1748. rags.

  1749. Nothing I can do that's

  1750. good on my own.

1751. It ends in the beautiful

  1752. doctrine of the

  1753. perseverance of the

  1754. saints.

1755. The last one, the end

1756. cap on this, is that

1757. once we are gods, we

  1758. are gods forever.

  1759. There's no undoing that.

1760. Once we're in his hand,

1761. nothing can take us out

  1762. of his hand, even

  1763. ourselves.

  1764. Right?

  1765. Can't remove myself from

  1766. God's hand.

1767. And you see the work of

  1768. the Trinity in those

  1769. middle three, which are

  1770. unconditional election.

1771. God has made a plan

  1772. before the foundation of

  1773. the world.

  1774. Limited atonement, which

1775. many people like to call

  1776. particular redemption,

  1777. but I don't think TUPIP is a

1778. very good acronym here in

  1779. this case.

  1780. Limited atonement, right?

1781. The work of Christ for us

  1782. on the cross.

  1783. God made the plan.

  1784. Christ accomplished the

  1785. work.

  1786. It is finished.

  1787. Right?

  1788. And then irresistible

  1789. grace.

  1790. Some people say the

  1791. effectual calling of the

  1792. Spirit.

1793. So God made the plan.

  1794. Christ accomplished the

  1795. work.

1796. And the Spirit is bringing

  1797. that work into fruition.

  1798. Right?

1799. He has called us, and now

1800. He is working in us to

  1801. make us perfect.

  1802. Right?

  1803. Beloved, these doctrines

1804. are meant to be a pillow

1805. for us to lay our heads

  1806. on.

  1807. They're not meant to be a

1808. rock for us to crash

  1809. headlong into.

  1810. And they're certainly not

1811. meant to be a rock into

  1812. which to beat somebody

1813. else over the head with.

1814. Every time we see this

  1815. taught throughout the

  1816. Scriptures, it is meant

1817. to be a comfort to the

  1818. people of God.

1819. God is sovereign, and He

1820. is good to His people.

  1821. That's what we're meant

1822. to grab hold of and

  1823. take.

  1824. As Spurgeon was arguing

  1825. that the sovereignty of

1826. God, that doctrine should be

1827. fought for more than any

  1828. other doctrine for the

  1829. people of God.

1830. Because that is where our

  1831. surety comes from.

  1832. Right?

1833. That's what gives us the

  1834. encouragement to continue

  1835. to work.

1836. If all of this depended

1837. on me, I'd be done

  1838. already.

  1839. Because I'm a failure at

  1840. leading a church.

  1841. I would just quit.

  1842. I'd say, there's not a

  1843. chance I'm getting this

  1844. done.

  1845. It would be fruitless

1846. effort if it all depended

  1847. on me.

1848. But because it depends on

  1849. God, the call, whatever

  1850. that particular vision for

  1851. our church is, I don't

  1852. really even know.

  1853. It will be completed.

  1854. Right?

1855. God will do exactly what

1856. He intends to do with us.

  1857. Right?

  1858. Remember that.

  1859. These doctrines are meant

1860. to be a pillow for us to

  1861. rest our heads on.

1862. The light yoke that we

  1863. take upon us.

  1864. John 16.33, Jesus says,

1865. I have said these things

1866. to you that in me you may

  1867. have peace.

1868. In the world you will have

  1869. tribulation.

  1870. But take heart.

1871. I have overcome the world.

  1872. Christ crucified.

1873. He has overcome the world.

1874. Paul had confidence in this

1875. as he was talking to others

  1876. about others and their

  1877. progression in faith.

  1878. Philippians 1.6, he says,

1879. And I'm sure of this, that

1880. he who began a good work in

1881. you will bring it to

1882. completion at the day of

  1883. Jesus Christ.

1884. Christ, it is in God's

  1885. sovereign control.

1886. It doesn't negate our part

  1887. in it.

1888. But God is in control.

1889. As we are given the great

1890. commission by Christ to go

1891. and make disciples of all

1892. the world, baptizing them in

1893. the name of the Father and

1894. the Son and the Holy Spirit,

1895. teaching Him to walk in His

  1896. ways.

1897. As we're given that commission,

1898. we're given an even greater

  1899. promise.

  1900. Matthew 28.20,

1901. And behold, I am with you

1902. always to the end of the age.

1903. If we're going to set about

1904. the work in the face of

  1905. opposition, we must believe

  1906. these things.

1907. The sovereign goodness of our

  1908. God.

  1909. Secondly, simply know that

1910. opposition is part of the

  1911. work.

1912. It is part of the work.

1913. It doesn't just stand in the

1914. way of the work, but it is

1915. in fact part of the work of

1916. us being built into a holy

1917. temple, a dwelling place for

1918. God, as the people of God.

1919. It's part of the work.

  1920. James 1.2-4 says,

1921. Counter all joy, my brothers,

1922. when you meet trials of

  1923. various kinds.

1924. For you know that the testing

  1925. of your faith produces

  1926. steadfastness.

1927. And let steadfastness have its

1928. full effect, that you may be

  1929. perfect and complete,

  1930. lacking in nothing.

1931. What did I say to you?

1932. That the work that's before us

1933. is to be holy and to bring

1934. about holiness in the lives of

  1935. others.

1936. This is a major way in which

  1937. that happens.

1938. As we work in the face of

1939. opposition, that is in fact

  1940. part of the work.

  1941. Right?

  1942. Relying on God.

1943. The testing of our faith.

1944. God does this to me constantly.

1945. He says to me, do you really

  1946. trust me?

1947. Do you really think you can do

  1948. nothing apart from me?

1949. And so often I go, yeah, but I

  1950. forgot.

  1951. You're right.

1952. I can do nothing apart from you.

1953. Everything good that happens in

1954. me and through me is a work of

  1955. God.

1956. It's this testing of my faith and

  1957. it produces steadfastness.

  1958. In what?

  1959. Steadfastness in faith.

1960. In our dependence on God.

1961. And that is the process by which

  1962. we're made perfect.

1963. That our faith will be made

  1964. complete.

1965. So let me conclude this morning

1966. by just asking you two questions.

1967. I just want you to ponder these.

1968. Has opposition caused you to

  1969. cease working?

1970. And are there any endeavors that

1971. you need to renew your

  1972. commitment to?

  1973. Let's pray together.
