  1. Nehemiah in a unique position to be trusted by King Artaxerxes as his cupbearer.

  2. We have seen King Artaxerxes give permission and a sort of blank check to Nehemiah for the rebuilding of the wall.

  3. Chapter 1, verse 8 says,

  4. For the good hand of God was upon Nehemiah.

  5. We have seen Nehemiah's return to Jerusalem, his observation of the wall,

  6. his report of God's sovereign goodness for the task, and the beginning of the building of the wall.

  7. We have seen the way that the Israelites worked in the face of opposition,

  8. for God had given them a mind to work.

  9. That's chapter 4, verse 6.

  10. And we have seen the work completed, and the surrounding nations afraid

  11. because they perceived that this work had been accomplished with the help of their God.

  12. Chapter 6, verse 16.

  13. So the wall has now been finished.

  14. But the work is far from over.

  15. The building of the wall was just the very beginning of the work that needed to be done in Israel.

  16. Notice here my careful language.

  17. As I said to you that God brought the news.

  18. That God moved Nehemiah's heart.

  19. That God placed Nehemiah in a unique position.

  20. We've been talking a lot about providence

  21. and the way in which God brings about His purposes.

  22. As I first read chapter 7 this week,

  23. I actually had a mind just to skip over it altogether.

  24. In fact, I spent the week preparing in that way

  25. and looking at chapters 8, 9, and 10

  26. at the spiritual revival that began to come.

  27. But I realized something in my study,

  28. and unfortunately, yesterday morning,

  29. I realized this and had to start all over again.

  30. But it's not that the work began,

  31. that there was a work happening during a period of time,

  32. these 52 days,

  33. and that was the work of rebuilding the wall,

  34. and then things changed.

  35. And now it's the spiritual work.

  36. And you'll hear many people preach

  37. and commentate on this in that way.

  38. There was a physical work,

  39. and then the spiritual work began.

  40. But in fact,

  41. the spiritual work had already begun.

  42. The people had already been moved to work.

  43. Nehemiah had been moved to lead in this way,

  44. not simply for the sake of the building of a wall,

  45. but because of God's glory.

  46. You remember, I've been telling you all along,

  47. the reason Nehemiah was so grieved

  48. is that the state of the nation of Israel

  49. was the visible manifestation of God's goodness,

  50. God's character to His people.

  51. And they were in shambles.

  52. They were languishing in the land.

  53. And Nehemiah wanted God to be seen

  54. as big as God actually is.

  55. Wanted to ascribe to Him

  56. the proper glory that is due Him.

  57. And that is why this work goes on

  58. as it begins.

  59. And we see the people not failing in this.

  60. They falter at some times in chapter 4.

  61. We see them falter.

  62. They think the work's too great for them.

  63. But they don't fail.

  64. Under Nehemiah's leadership,

  65. they continue to build.

  66. And it seems like everything is just right.

  67. Pretty rare in Scripture we get that.

  68. Glimpse of people doing it all right.

  69. And guess what?

  70. In this case,

  71. there's a failure on their part.

  72. I'm going to show you that in chapter 7

  73. and hope that it speaks to your life today.

  74. Join me in a word of prayer

  75. before we read in chapter 7.

  76. Father God, I thank You again for this day

  77. and I thank You for Your Word.

  78. And I pray that this morning

  79. You will bless the preaching of it.

  80. The miracle of this is not that I can get up here

  81. and say words that make any sense.

  82. It's that You, by Your Spirit,

  83. apply them to our hearts.

  84. I need this as much as anyone else this morning.

  85. And so I pray that You will bless the reading

  86. and the preaching of Your Word.

  87. I pray this in Christ's name.

  88. Amen.

  89. Now, I am not going to read to you

  90. all of chapter 7.

  91. I would encourage you to take a look at it

  92. on your own

  93. when you don't have to properly pronounce

  94. all of these names.

  95. We're going to make a little bit of a jump

  96. and I will go back

  97. and I will recap for you

  98. the section that we skip in our reading.

  99. But let's begin chapter 7, verse 1.

  100. Now, when the wall had been built,

  101. I had set up the doors

  102. and the gatekeepers, the singers,

  103. and the Levites had been appointed.

  104. I gave my brother Hanani

  105. and Hananiah, the governor of the castle,

  106. charge over Jerusalem,

  107. for he was a more faithful

  108. and God-fearing man than many.

  109. And I said to them,

  110. Let not the gates of Jerusalem be open

  111. till the sun is hot.

  112. And while they are still standing guard,

  113. let them shut and bar the doors.

  114. Appoint guards from among the inhabitants of Jerusalem,

  115. some at their guard posts

  116. and some in front of their own homes.

  117. The city was wide and large,

  118. but the people within it were few

  119. and no houses had been rebuilt.

  120. Then my God put it into my heart

  121. to assemble the nobles and the officials

  122. and the people to be enrolled by genealogy.

  123. And I found the book of the genealogy

  124. of those who came up at the first

  125. and I found written in it.

  126. Jump to verse 73.

  127. So the priests, the Levites,

  128. the gatekeepers, the singers,

  129. some of the people, the temple servants,

  130. and all Israel lived in their towns.

  131. And when the seventh month had come,

  132. the people of Israel were in their towns.

  133. I want to draw your attention to two verses.

  134. And this kind of arrested my attention

  135. as I was really preparing yesterday morning

  136. to give you a little brief summary of chapter 7

  137. so we can move on to chapter 8.

  138. And that's where I was at.

  139. And these two verses caught my attention.

  140. Verse 4 and verse 73.

  141. The city was wide and large,

  142. but the people within it were few

  143. and no houses had been rebuilt.

  144. So the priests, the Levites, the gatekeepers, the singers,

  145. some of the people, the temple servants,

  146. and all Israel lived in their towns.

  147. So what's happening here

  148. is that now the wall has been rebuilt.

  149. No one or very few people

  150. had lived within Jerusalem

  151. because it wasn't a safe place to be

  152. and they were in their country homes.

  153. They were out in the suburbs

  154. living.

  155. And now that the wall has been rebuilt,

  156. the houses still haven't been rebuilt,

  157. and people are back

  158. in their nice suburban places.

  159. That's where they are.

  160. They're in the comfort of their homes.

  161. And what struck me

  162. is that they missed the point altogether.

  163. God's glory is not found in buildings,

  164. but in His people.

  165. And they didn't see that the state of Jerusalem

  166. was the real point.

  167. How is it that the people of God

  168. are thriving?

  169. They did a great work.

  170. They built a wall in 52 days

  171. and they all headed back

  172. to their comfy homes.

  173. They didn't come to occupy the city.

  174. The people of God

  175. living in community

  176. as the people of God.

  177. The same problem existed

  178. a number of years later

  179. as the temple was being rebuilt.

  180. And Haggai,

  181. who prophesied during this time,

  182. chapter 1,

  183. verse 3 and 4,

  184. says,

  185. Then the word of the Lord

  186. came by the hand of Haggai the prophet.

  187. Is it a time for you yourselves

  188. to dwell in your paneled houses

  189. while this house lies in ruins?

  190. And speaking of the temple,

  191. is it the proper time for you

  192. to be living in your nice homes

  193. in the suburbs

  194. while this house lies in ruins?

  195. Now, in this day,

  196. a paneled house

  197. is a very fancy thing.

  198. Sam and I are painting

  199. our dining room right now,

  200. which at one time

  201. was paneled and painted

  202. and painted and painted

  203. and painted

  204. and I'm very frustrated

  205. because it's so hard

  206. to paint a paneled wall

  207. with all the little grooves

  208. and such in it.

  209. But in this time,

  210. it meant that they had lumber.

  211. They had paid the high price

  212. for wood

  213. and they had had it milled

  214. and they had placed it

  215. along the walls

  216. inside their homes.

  217. These were nice homes

  218. that they were dwelling in.

  219. And we find them here

  220. in the same condition.

  221. It's as if they completely

  222. missed the point.

  223. Entirely missed the point

  224. of why they were

  225. to rebuild Jerusalem.

  226. A revival comes.

  227. We're going to see that

  228. beginning next week.

  229. Truth.

  230. The Word of God is open.

  231. They called Ezra

  232. and he begins to read

  233. from the law

  234. and the Spirit of God

  235. comes and gives them conviction

  236. and we see at the end

  237. of this process

  238. 8, 9, and 10.

  239. The very beginning

  240. of chapter 11

  241. says,

  242. Now the leaders of the people

  243. lived in Jerusalem

  244. and the rest of the people

  245. cast lots to bring

  246. one out of ten

  247. to live in Jerusalem,

  248. the holy city,

  249. while nine out of ten

  250. remained in their other towns.

  251. And the people blessed

  252. all the men

  253. who willingly offered

  254. to live in Jerusalem.

  255. So recognize

  256. that a revival happens

  257. and what do they begin to do?

  258. They begin to send people

  259. back into Jerusalem

  260. to live and dwell

  261. in a community.

  262. So what does that say

  263. to us?

  264. I've been saying to you

  265. all along

  266. that the parallel here

  267. is that we're building

  268. a spiritual house.

  269. It's not such a far stretch.

  270. I kind of missed it

  271. myself.

  272. I wanted to draw

  273. this comparison

  274. between the building

  275. of a wall

  276. to the building

  277. of a church.

  278. But in fact,

  279. what they were really doing

  280. was building

  281. a community of faith.

  282. Those who were gods

  283. who worshipped Him.

  284. It's the very same thing

  285. we're doing today.

  286. In John chapter 13,

    John 13:34

  287. verse 34 and 35,

  288. Jesus says,

  289. A new commandment

  290. I give to you

  291. that you love one another.

  292. Just as I have loved you,

  293. you also are to love

  294. one another.

  295. By this,

  296. all people will know

  297. that you are My disciples

  298. if you have love

  299. for one another.

  300. Now the word used here,

  301. no, Jesus didn't say this

  302. in Greek.

  303. Jesus would have said this

  304. in Hebrew

  305. more than likely.

  306. But the Greek word here for,

  307. excuse me,

  308. the Hebrew word for new

  309. actually means renewed.

  310. So we could read it,

  311. A renewed commandment

  312. I give to you.

  313. A restating of the commandment

  314. found in Leviticus 19.18.

  315. You shall love your neighbor

  316. as yourself.

  317. It's the high calling

  318. of Christians

  319. to love God

  320. and to love people.

  321. The commandments

  322. that are given to us

  323. in this way.

  324. And how is it

  325. that they're going to know

  326. that we're Christians?

  327. By our buildings,

  328. by our signs,

  329. by our radio stations,

  330. by our t-shirts,

  331. by our bumper stickers,

  332. I hope not,

  333. but by our love

  334. for one another.

  335. The Greek word

  336. translated here,

  337. alelus,

  338. one another,

  339. has no singular form.

  340. There's no way

  341. to say this

  342. in the singular,

  343. meaning that it is never used

  344. in reference to me,

  345. but it is always used

  346. in reference to us.

  347. It is the very paradigm word

  348. for community.

  349. That is what we are called to.

  350. I fear there's a form of thinking

  351. in the Christian church

  352. in America

  353. that's very radically independent.

  354. There's a little phrase

  355. that kind of encapsulates it,

  356. although I wouldn't give

  357. all the credit to the phrase,

  358. but you've heard this,

  359. personal relationship

  360. with Jesus Christ.

  361. Found nowhere in the Scriptures.

  362. Now it's true,

  363. we do each have

  364. an individual relationship

  365. with Jesus Christ.

  366. He is my brother.

  367. We are friends.

  368. He is my Lord.

  369. There's a relationship there

  370. between me and Him,

  371. but the more proper way

  372. to speak about it

  373. would be to say

  374. that I have been saved

  375. not to a personal relationship

  376. to Jesus Christ,

  377. but to a community relationship

  378. with Jesus Christ.

  379. We have been saved

  380. in order to be together

  381. for the glory of God.

  382. You cannot miss this point.

  383. It's an axiom.

  384. Everything swings on this

  385. for your Christian living.

  386. Your Christian life

  387. cannot happen

  388. apart from the context

  389. of the church.

  390. Notice the epistles.

  391. All of the letters written,

  392. Paul, Peter, John,

  393. all of their primary concerns

  394. is correcting the community of faith.

  395. They do so doctrinally.

  396. They bring truth.

  397. Praise God for it.

  398. Much of it is commentary,

  399. setting us straight

  400. about our thinking.

  401. But they do so in order

  402. that the community of faith

  403. will live rightly.

  404. Let's take, for example,

  405. 1 Corinthians.

    1 Corinthians 1 chapter mention

  406. Chapters 1-4.

  407. Paul addresses the disunity

  408. that's happening amongst them

  409. because they're dividing

  410. over worldly criteria.

  411. chapter 1, verse 16 and 17.

  412. Do you not know

  413. that you are God's temple

  414. and that God's spirit

  415. dwells in you?

  416. That's not chapter 1.

  417. I don't know what chapter it is.

  418. You can find it.

  419. Verses 16 and 17

  420. of one of those chapters.

  421. I think it's 3.

  422. Do you not know

  423. that you are God's temple

  424. and that God's spirit

  425. dwells in you?

  426. If anyone destroys God's temple,

  427. God will destroy him.

  428. For God's temple is holy

  429. and you,

  430. being the church,

  431. are that temple.

  432. chapter 5,

  433. he addresses concern

  434. for immorality that's happening.

  435. There's, in fact,

  436. a sexual relationship

  437. that's happening.

  438. And he says in verse 2,

  439. let him who has done this

  440. be removed from among you.

  441. Chapter 6,

  442. lawsuits.

  443. There's these lawsuits

  444. happening between Christians.

  445. And in verse 8,

  446. he says,

  447. you yourselves wrong

  448. and defraud

  449. even your own brothers.

  450. Chapter 7-10,

  451. he addresses issues

  452. of Christian liberty.

  453. 10-32,

  454. it says,

  455. give no offense

  456. to Jew or to Greek

  457. or the church of God.

  458. Just as I try to please

  459. everyone in everything I do,

  460. not seeking my own advantage

  461. but that of many,

  462. that they may be saved.

  463. The way we live matters.

  464. Chapters 11-14,

  465. the worship practices

  466. of the Corinthian church.

  467. Chapter 14,

  468. verse 23,

  469. he says,

  470. will they not say

  471. that you are out

  472. of your minds?

  473. It's the major concern

  474. of the epistles

  475. as how it is

  476. that we live together

  477. in a community of faith.

  478. Because how we do this,

  479. how we live as a community

  480. of God's saints

  481. will either confirm

  482. the gospel realities

  483. in our life

  484. and attract people

  485. to Christ,

  486. or it will deny

  487. those gospel realities

  488. and repel people

  489. from Him.

  490. This happens

  491. far too much

  492. in the American church.

  493. I can't speak

  494. for the rest of the world.

  495. From my observation,

  496. this happens

  497. far too much.

  498. How will people know

  499. that we are disciples

  500. of Jesus Christ?

  501. By our love

  502. for one another.

  503. How will they see

  504. that our religion

  505. is a farce?

  506. That it is ridiculous?

  507. That it's just a bunch

  508. of rules and laws

  509. that are going to rob

  510. all the temporary fun

  511. of this life?

  512. Because we are just

  513. like them.

  514. Go back to Nehemiah.

  515. Let me sum up for you

  516. really fast

  517. what happens here

  518. in Nehemiah.

  519. It begins with,

  520. starting in verse 6,

  521. a numbering of the

  522. human resources.

  523. The people matter.

  524. The people that were

  525. brought back from exile,

  526. they matter.

  527. They mean something

  528. to the nation of Israel

  529. and therefore

  530. the glory of God.

  531. Verses 6-38,

  532. the laymen are numbered.

  533. Verses 39-42,

  534. the priests are numbered.

  535. Verse 43,

  536. the Levites are numbered.

  537. Verse 44,

  538. the Levitical singers

  539. are numbered.

  540. Verse 45,

  541. the gatekeepers

  542. who more than likely

  543. were also Levites

  544. are numbered.

  545. Verse 46-56,

  546. the temple servants

  547. are numbered.

  548. Verses 57-60,

  549. the descendants

  550. of Solomon's servants

  551. are numbered.

  552. And then we see

  553. a separating

  554. and an excluding

  555. in verses 61-65,

  556. kind of a sorting.

  557. And they exclude

  558. those who were

  559. unable to prove

  560. their descent from Aaron.

  561. Those whose

  562. Levitical line

  563. was not very clear

  564. and clean,

  565. which was a way

  566. that they were

  567. ascribing to the

  568. proper order

  569. of worship

  570. that God had given

  571. to them.

  572. We could draw a parallel

  573. to the way we pick

  574. leadership for our

  575. churches in this regard.

  576. And then verses 66-72,

  577. there's a numbering

  578. of the other resources,

  579. the other things

  580. that are at their

  581. disposal for the

  582. rebuilding and the

  583. goodness of the people.

  584. And that's chapter 7.

  585. You see why at first glance

  586. I might have jumped

  587. right over the top of it.

  588. But the one anotherness

  589. is important

  590. and they were missing it.

  591. A revival came amongst them

  592. and they got it

  593. and they began to get

  594. about that work.

  595. Now let's talk a little bit

  596. about the one another's

  597. of Scripture

  598. I mentioned to you before.

  599. They're in John.

  600. That we are to love

  601. one another.

  602. You know that the New Testament

  603. is full of them?

  604. I have a cheat sheet

  605. right here in front of me.

  606. Highlighted and ready to go.

  607. Listen to some of these.

  608. This is what we're meant

  609. to do together.

  610. Be at peace

  611. with one another.

  612. Love one another.

  613. Be devoted to one another

  614. in brotherly love.

  615. Honor one another

  616. above yourselves.

  617. Live in harmony

  618. with one another.

  619. Stop passing judgment

  620. on one another.

  621. Accept one another.

  622. Instruct one another.

  623. Greet one another

  624. with a holy kiss

  625. which was to say

  626. you're part of our family.

  627. Have equal concern

  628. for one another.

  629. Serve one another

  630. in love.

  631. Carry each other's burdens.

  632. Be patient.

  633. Bearing with one another

  634. in love.

  635. Be kind and compassionate

  636. to one another.

  637. Speak to one another

  638. with psalms, hymns,

  639. and spiritual songs.

  640. Submit to one another.

  641. In humility consider others

  642. better than yourselves.

  643. Bear with each other.

  644. Forgive one another.

  645. Teach one another.

  646. Admonish one another.

  647. Make your love increase

  648. and overflow

  649. for one another.

  650. Encourage one another.

  651. Build each other up.

  652. Spur one another

  653. on toward love

  654. and good deeds.

  655. Confess your sins

  656. to one another.

  657. Pray for one another.

  658. Love one another deeply

  659. from the heart.

  660. Live in harmony

  661. with one another.

  662. Offer hospitality

  663. to one another.

  664. Clothe yourselves

  665. with humility

  666. towards one another.

  667. And once again,

  668. love one another.

  669. These are the things

  670. we're called to

  671. as a faith community.

  672. You may have hoped

  673. that I was at this point

  674. going to just give you

  675. some opinion

  676. of how I think

  677. we ought to be

  678. living together

  679. because it would be

  680. really easy

  681. to weasel your way

  682. out of that.

  683. But thus speaks

  684. the word of the living God.

  685. This is how we're

  686. meant to live together

  687. for our good

  688. and for God's glory.

  689. This requires

  690. a togetherness.

  691. Do you catch

  692. all those things?

  693. I love texting.

  694. I love it.

  695. I don't like the formalities

  696. of conversation.

  697. Having a phone conversation.

  698. I could skip right over

  699. the hellos.

  700. How are you?

  701. I could just get right

  702. to the point.

  703. Texting allows me

  704. to do that.

  705. It's really hard.

  706. I mean,

  707. to a degree,

  708. some of these things

  709. we can accomplish

  710. this way.

  711. But we need to be

  712. together,

  713. face to face,

  714. spending time

  715. in relationship

  716. together

  717. to do these things.

  718. Community

  719. is incredibly

  720. important.

  721. Beloved,

  722. Sunday morning

  723. is not

  724. enough.

  725. Especially

  726. those of you

  727. who come

  728. right when we start

  729. and leave

  730. right when we end.

  731. That's just

  732. consumer Christianity.

  733. You're coming

  734. for the show.

  735. You sit,

  736. you consume,

  737. you leave.

  738. We need you

  739. as much as you

  740. need us.

  741. We need relationship.

  742. We need to spend

  743. time beforehand

  744. drinking coffee

  745. and talking about

  746. our weeks.

  747. We need to spend

  748. time afterward

  749. encouraging one another

  750. with the preaching

  751. of the word

  752. and the singing

  753. of our songs.

  754. Those things

  755. matter.

  756. The service

  757. itself is important.

  758. You know the reason

  759. we don't turn the music

  760. up super,

  761. super,

  762. super loud

  763. and turn off

  764. all the lights

  765. in here?

  766. Because we need

  767. to hear each

  768. other singing

  769. true words.

  770. If you're not

  771. a singer,

  772. start.

  773. I know it's

  774. terrifying.

  775. I have a horrible

  776. singing voice.

  777. I can hear

  778. a key at least.

  779. I think I sing

  780. the right notes.

  781. I think I sing

  782. the right notes.

  783. But it doesn't

  784. matter when you

  785. sing,

  786. think.

  787. The person in

  788. front of me

  789. and the person

  790. next to me

  791. needs to be

  792. encouraged with

  793. the truth of

  794. the gospel.

  795. I will sing.

  796. Find your heart

  797. uniting with the

  798. words coming out

  799. of your mouth.

  800. That's why we do

  801. that.

  802. If you ever

  803. come to a

  804. concert here,

  805. it'll be much

  806. louder.

  807. You won't be able

  808. to hear yourself

  809. think we're going

  810. to turn the music

  811. up so loud.

  812. But there's a

  813. reason we do

  814. it that way.

  815. Across the

  816. nation this

  817. morning,

  818. there are dark

  819. rooms and people

  820. having these little

  821. silent moments

  822. with God.

  823. Stay home if

  824. that's what you

  825. want to do.

  826. We come together

  827. to meet with the

  828. people of God,

  829. to encourage one

  830. another,

  831. to do all these

  832. things that I

  833. just listed off.

  834. life.

  835. It matters.

  836. It's so,

  837. so important.

  838. Other times

  839. during the week,

  840. if you are just

  841. coming on Sunday

  842. morning to

  843. Christ Family

  844. Church,

  845. you're missing

  846. a huge part

  847. of what church

  848. life looks like.

  849. We do something

  850. called community

  851. groups.

  852. Right now they

  853. meet on Wednesdays.

  854. They don't have

  855. to.

  856. There are two

  857. places they meet

  858. right now.

  859. They can meet

  860. in many,

  861. many,

  862. many places.

  863. Community groups

  864. are key and

  865. vital to what

  866. we do.

  867. It lets us get

  868. together and

  869. really start working

  870. these things out

  871. together,

  872. really pressing

  873. into Christian

  874. life together.

  875. It's hugely

  876. important.

  877. Now look,

  878. some of these

  879. people probably

  880. lived in their

  881. fancy homes out

  882. in the suburbs

  883. and they said,

  884. Nehemiah,

  885. we can't come

  886. live in the city.

  887. There aren't

  888. any houses yet.

  889. The houses

  890. haven't even been

  891. built.

  892. So when you get

  893. a whole city built

  894. for us,

  895. we'll come back

  896. and we'll stay.

  897. In the city,

  898. right?

  899. Make sure you

  900. build me a

  901. paneled house

  902. because I've got

  903. a nice paneled

  904. house out where

  905. I'm at right now.

  906. They didn't do

  907. that after

  908. revival came.

  909. Chapter 11,

  910. they went back

  911. and they worked

  912. and they built.

  913. It takes that.

  914. It takes work

  915. to get together.

  916. Just because you

  917. show up to a

  918. small little Bible

  919. study and you

  920. don't get a lot

  921. out of it,

  922. doesn't mean you

  923. shouldn't go again.

  924. It takes work.

  925. You have to

  926. contribute.

  927. It might be a

  928. mess.

  929. It might be a

  930. total shambles.

  931. Maybe you're the

  932. one that needs

  933. to step in and

  934. say,

  935. this is a mess.

  936. How can we

  937. help sort this

  938. out together?

  939. It's very

  940. possible.

  941. It takes

  942. investment to

  943. live the

  944. Christian life

  945. together.

  946. How many of

  947. you have

  948. said,

  949. don't raise

  950. your hands,

  951. please?

  952. I don't

  953. certainly

  954. get anything

  955. out of that.

  956. What did

  957. you put in?

  958. Did you

  959. contribute in

  960. any way

  961. whatsoever

  962. before you

  963. made that

  964. very comment?

  965. I would

  966. guess not.

  967. These things

  968. take work.

  969. It's hard to

  970. get to places,

  971. right?

  972. Parents, I

  973. understand.

  974. I didn't used

  975. to understand.

  976. I get it.

  977. I get it now.

  978. It's hard to get

  979. them up.

  980. Sam was mentioning

  981. this morning that

  982. there's got to be

  983. some spiritual warfare

  984. on a house on

  985. Sunday mornings because

  986. nothing goes well

  987. on Sunday mornings.

  988. Our boys wake up at

  989. a quarter till seven

  990. almost every day.

  991. It's annoying.

  992. We want one day,

  993. a day off.

  994. We sleep in just a

  995. little bit, 7.30,

  996. come on.

  997. But Sunday morning,

  998. we have to wake

  999. them up almost

  1000. every Sunday

  1001. morning.

  1002. They sleep so

  1003. well.

  1004. Wrestle to get

  1005. them here,

  1006. right?

1007. It's hard to go to

  1008. community group with

  1009. kids.

  1010. I get that.

  1011. It's conveniently

  1012. been at our house,

  1013. which makes it a

  1014. little bit easier

  1015. as of late,

  1016. right?

  1017. But it's challenging

  1018. to do that.

  1019. We have to work

  1020. at these things.

  1021. It's very,

  1022. very important.

  1023. If you're a member

  1024. of this church,

  1025. let's find a way to

  1026. get you involved in

  1027. a community group.

  1028. Come to me and

  1029. talk to me.

  1030. What are the

  1031. problems?

  1032. What are the

  1033. things that are

  1034. keeping it from

  1035. happening?

  1036. I understand that

  1037. we have distance

  1038. issues.

  1039. We have health

  1040. issues.

  1041. Come talk to me.

  1042. Let's find a way to

  1043. get you involved in

  1044. this kind of life.

  1045. Let me remind you

  1046. that if you're a

  1047. member of this

  1048. church, you signed

  1049. a covenant with

  1050. this church, a

  1051. commitment to be

  1052. together with us.

  1053. The preamble says,

  1054. having been led by

1055. the Spirit of God to

  1056. acknowledge Jesus

  1057. Christ as Savior

  1058. and Lord, and in

  1059. profession of that

  1060. faith, I most

  1061. solemnly and joyfully

  1062. enter into covenant

  1063. with Christ's family

  1064. church.

  1065. And there are seven

  1066. statements that

  1067. list it off here.

  1068. And the second to

  1069. the last one says,

  1070. to contribute to

  1071. the work of the

  1072. church with my

  1073. talents, time, and

  1074. finances.

  1075. Are you doing that?

  1076. There's probably a

  1077. number of people in

  1078. this church that

  1079. need a dose of

  1080. church discipline

  1081. because you're not.

  1082. You're breaking the

  1083. covenant because you

  1084. don't give of

  1085. yourself.

  1086. The closing paragraph

  1087. says, I enter into

  1088. this covenant together

  1089. with Christ's family

  1090. church under the

  1091. common goal of

  1092. obedience to,

  1093. glorification of,

  1094. and joyful satisfaction

  1095. in Jesus Christ

  1096. because I believe and

  1097. assert with the rest

1098. of the body that we

  1099. need one another's

  1100. help to do so.

  1101. We were created for

  1102. community.

  1103. You're spiritually

  1104. depressed?

  1105. Get with the

  1106. beloved.

  1107. You're struggling to

  1108. walk out your faith?

  1109. Get with the

  1110. beloved.

  1111. Don't just go when

  1112. you feel strong and

  1113. ready to contribute.

  1114. Go when you're

  1115. hurting.

1116. That is the place you

  1117. need to be.

  1118. It's with those who

  1119. understand what you're

  1120. going through and

1121. want to see you be

  1122. healthy.

  1123. These things matter.

  1124. I listened to a

  1125. sermon this week

  1126. where the guy was

  1127. sharing his shock

  1128. at some of the

  1129. things that are

  1130. happening in our

  1131. Christian culture.

  1132. The way now you

1133. can watch TV on the

  1134. web, which is not

  1135. really a new thing

  1136. because they've been

  1137. doing it on TV.

  1138. Excuse me.

  1139. TV on the web.

  1140. Sermons.

  1141. Church sermons.

  1142. Church services on

  1143. the web.

  1144. Right?

  1145. It's been happening

1146. on TV for a long,

  1147. long time.

  1148. But he was talking

  1149. about this phenomenon

  1150. and he said,

  1151. you'll never believe

1152. there is a church in

  1153. Atlanta where they

  1154. project a holographic

  1155. image of the pastor

  1156. onto the stage.

  1157. And I thought,

  1158. oh gosh, I know

  1159. exactly what he's

  1160. talking about.

  1161. That is in our

  1162. backyard.

  1163. And I won't say the

  1164. name of the church,

1165. but I think you know

  1166. what we're discussing

  1167. here.

1168. He was just in shock

  1169. about it.

  1170. He just couldn't

  1171. believe that these

  1172. things were happening.

  1173. And he brought up

  1174. the doctrine of the

  1175. incarnation of Jesus

  1176. Christ.

  1177. And I really,

  1178. really appreciated

1179. that and spent a lot

  1180. of time thinking

  1181. about it this week.

  1182. Jesus Christ came,

1183. God sent his son to

  1184. the earth in human

  1185. form.

  1186. He came and he

  1187. dwelt amongst us.

  1188. Right?

  1189. Physically dwelt.

  1190. Now I believe that

1191. God did that at the

  1192. perfect time in

  1193. history.

  1194. Right?

  1195. Perfectly sent him

  1196. right when he needed

  1197. to be sent.

  1198. Maybe if he had

  1199. waited, he could have

  1200. been a little more

  1201. efficient.

  1202. Right?

  1203. Could have sent him

  1204. during this time.

  1205. We could have

  1206. simulcasted Jesus all

  1207. over the world.

  1208. How phenomenal

  1209. that would have

  1210. been.

  1211. Maybe the reason

  1212. he didn't send

  1213. him at this time

1214. was so that no one

  1215. could simulcast him.

  1216. So that it was

  1217. impossible for some

  1218. guy with a web

  1219. phone to hold it

1220. up and try to get

  1221. him up on the

  1222. internet so that

  1223. everyone could hear

  1224. the man Jesus

  1225. Christ speak.

  1226. Right?

  1227. I think it's

  1228. important that we

  1229. take that and we

  1230. apply that.

  1231. That physical

  1232. presence is crucial.

  1233. Jesus came to

  1234. dwell amongst us.

  1235. Do we dwell with

  1236. each other?

  1237. I'm thankful that

  1238. you're here this

  1239. morning.

  1240. I think for a lot

  1241. of you, you get

  1242. this.

  1243. Like many of you

  1244. do.

  1245. And I would just

  1246. encourage you to let

  1247. this stiffen your

  1248. backbone.

1249. Put a rod of steel in

  1250. there and don't bend

  1251. from it.

  1252. Some of you don't.

  1253. I love you and that's

  1254. why I'm telling you.

1255. Some of you don't get

  1256. it.

1257. Some of you need to

  1258. spend time seriously

  1259. considering how to

  1260. work your week out

1261. so you can be with

  1262. the people of God.

  1263. How we function

  1264. together and how we

  1265. live in this community

  1266. of faith matters to

  1267. the world.

1268. I want people to see

  1269. Christ Family Church.

  1270. I don't want them to

1271. know us for the style

1272. of music we have or

1273. that we do verse by

  1274. verse exposition.

  1275. We're a reformed

  1276. church.

  1277. We're the church that

1278. meets on 60 and you

  1279. can't see the building

  1280. from the road.

  1281. I don't want to be

  1282. known for those things.

1283. I want to be known

  1284. for our love.

  1285. When people ask me

  1286. what I do for a living

  1287. and I say I pastor a

  1288. church and they say

  1289. what church do you

  1290. pastor and I say

  1291. Christ Family Church

1292. I want all over this

  1293. community for them to

  1294. go ah your people

  1295. love each other.

  1296. Wouldn't that be nice?

  1297. Be nice.

1298. But what a great grace

1299. of God that would be

1300. to us for that to

  1301. happen.

1302. Now I have to ask you

  1303. the question as we

  1304. talk about some of

  1305. these technology things

  1306. and why it's important

  1307. to be together.

  1308. Can you use technology?

1309. Is it an amazing tool?

  1310. Yes please do.

  1311. I told you that I was

  1312. listening to a sermon

  1313. online that even got

  1314. my mind going about

  1315. the doctrine of the

  1316. incarnation of Jesus

  1317. Christ and how it

1318. applies to the way we

  1319. do church.

  1320. It's a valuable tool.

  1321. It's neat.

1322. You ought to get out

  1323. there and listen to

  1324. sermons.

  1325. There are some good

  1326. preachers out there.

  1327. Don't let them jade

  1328. your opinion of me.

  1329. There's some very

  1330. very good preaching

  1331. at your fingertips.

  1332. On your cell phone

  1333. it's so incredibly cool.

  1334. But what is

1335. we have to ask the

  1336. question.

  1337. What is the difference

  1338. between just a mere

  1339. fellowship and a church?

  1340. Young people

  1341. especially you.

1342. As you get out of

  1343. going to church

  1344. with your parents

  1345. and you come away

  1346. to college

  1347. and you begin to

  1348. question everything.

  1349. Why can't you just

  1350. have a Bible study

  1351. on your dorm hall?

  1352. Isn't that enough?

  1353. Right?

  1354. You're encouraging

  1355. one another.

  1356. You're doing a lot

  1357. of these things

  1358. that I mentioned.

  1359. You're studying the

  1360. word.

  1361. You're devoting

  1362. yourself to it.

  1363. You're praying

  1364. together.

  1365. Those are good

  1366. things, right?

  1367. Why can it not

  1368. just stop at that?

  1369. Why do you need

  1370. to be part

  1371. of a church?

  1372. Because there

  1373. are some distinct

  1374. differences.

  1375. Firstly, a church

  1376. has qualified

  1377. leadership.

  1378. It's important.

  1379. Qualified leadership.

  1380. We saw the separation

  1381. that happened

  1382. in Nehemiah

    Nehemiah 7 chapter mention

  1383. chapter 7.

  1384. There's the practice

  1385. of the ordinances.

  1386. Baptism.

  1387. The Lord's Supper

  1388. which we'll take

  1389. here in a moment.

  1390. Those are an important

1391. aspect of what a church

  1392. does together

  1393. which are ultimately

  1394. about church discipline.

  1395. Something that happens.

  1396. I would encourage you

  1397. to not practice

  1398. church discipline

  1399. amongst a fellowship.

  1400. Continue to encourage.

  1401. Continue to teach.

1402. Do those types of things.

  1403. In the church setting

  1404. though, we must

  1405. call people out

  1406. when they're living

  1407. in habitual sin.

  1408. To our application

  1409. today, the third

  1410. thing is diversity.

  1411. It's a beautiful

  1412. thing about this

  1413. church.

  1414. I have discovered

  1415. now that I'm being

1416. quoted for one of the

  1417. things that I never

  1418. would have wanted

  1419. to be quoted for.

  1420. But apparently a lot

  1421. of the college students

  1422. tell each other

1423. as I have told them

  1424. numerous times.

1425. If you always hang out

  1426. with your idiot friend

1427. you'll always be an idiot.

1428. I put myself in that

  1429. category.

1430. If I'm always hanging out

1431. with people that are my age

  1432. and sharing my same

  1433. experiences, I'll never

  1434. grow.

1435. I need people that have

  1436. gone before me.

1437. And I need to be

  1438. passing information down

  1439. to those who are

  1440. behind me.

  1441. These are important

1442. things for us to be

  1443. doing.

  1444. Diversity in a church

  1445. should happen.

  1446. If we are preaching

  1447. Christ, Christ draws

  1448. men to himself.

  1449. And there are going

1450. to be men and women

  1451. of different ages

  1452. and different colors.

  1453. That's an important

1454. thing for us to do.

  1455. Now granted, we have

1456. a church in an area

1457. and that area is going

1458. to tend to have a

  1459. certain demographic.

1460. But we do not have

  1461. a Saddleback Sam.

  1462. If you're familiar

  1463. with the Purpose

  1464. Driven Church.

  1465. They had a target

  1466. person.

  1467. This person looks

  1468. like this and we're

  1469. going to arrange

  1470. everything we do to

  1471. get this person to

  1472. come to here.

  1473. income, likes,

  1474. dislikes, all of

  1475. those things.

  1476. That's who we're

  1477. going to go after.

  1478. Right?

1479. I love some of the

  1480. motivation behind some

  1481. of the like fringy

  1482. churches.

  1483. Right?

  1484. But they're wrong.

  1485. Biker churches?

  1486. We're going to

  1487. minister to motorcycle

  1488. guys.

  1489. No.

1490. We all have a common

  1491. demographic that we're

  1492. trying to minister to

  1493. and that's lost people.

  1494. Right?

  1495. That's people in need

  1496. of grace.

  1497. That's who we're

  1498. meant to minister to.

  1499. Right?

  1500. I heard recently that a

  1501. girl who had attended

1502. here for a while decided

1503. not to come any longer

  1504. because our music time

  1505. wasn't charismatic

  1506. enough for her.

1507. She grew up in a much

  1508. more charismatic church

1509. and she wanted to go

  1510. someplace else and

  1511. that's okay.

  1512. Right?

1513. But what I want you to

1514. see is that we didn't

  1515. exclude her from our

  1516. meeting because of the

  1517. way we do music.

  1518. Right?

1519. We didn't do music for

1520. people who really have a

1521. hard time swaying at all.

  1522. Right?

  1523. That's you guys.

  1524. The clapping is like,

  1525. right?

  1526. Clapping and singing is

  1527. tough for our group.

  1528. Right?

  1529. That's not what we're

  1530. trying to accomplish.

  1531. We didn't write that

  1532. down on our list.

  1533. Non-rhythmic people.

1534. It wasn't what we were

  1535. looking for.

  1536. Right?

1537. You guys want to get

  1538. super happy in here?

  1539. You go right ahead

  1540. and do it.

  1541. Right?

1542. We just want to minister

  1543. to people who need

  1544. grace.

  1545. That's what we're

  1546. here for.

  1547. In Acts chapter 4

    Acts 4 chapter mention

  1548. we see Peter before

  1549. the council.

  1550. Jerusalem verses

  1551. 11 and 12

  1552. says,

  1553. This Jesus is the

  1554. stone that was

  1555. projected by you,

  1556. the builders,

  1557. which has become the

  1558. cornerstone.

  1559. And there is salvation

  1560. in no one else,

1561. for there is no other

  1562. name under heaven

  1563. given among men

  1564. by which we must

  1565. be saved.

  1566. This is our

  1567. Jesus Christ.

  1568. The one who draws

  1569. men to himself.

1570. And he uses the church

  1571. to do that.

  1572. This fellowship

  1573. of Christian faith.

  1574. this community.

1575. So I'd ask you this

  1576. morning to examine

  1577. your hearts.

  1578. Are you playing your

  1579. part in this community?

  1580. Right?

  1581. The analogy is used

  1582. that we're a body.

1583. What part of the body

  1584. are you?

  1585. And is it

  1586. dysfunctional?

  1587. Is it non-existent?

1588. Does it just not even

1589. show up to some of the

  1590. things that it's

  1591. necessary at?

  1592. Ask God to search

  1593. your heart.

  1594. Let's pray together.

  1595. Amen.
