  1. Turn to the Old Testament book of Nehemiah chapter 8.

    Nehemiah 8 chapter mention

  2. I bless my heart to hear everybody singing in that way.

  3. ! If that's all that God had for me this morning, I would be content.

  4. And I hope and pray He has much more for us.

  5. Nehemiah chapter 8.

    Nehemiah 8 chapter mention

  6. We're going to read the chapter together, beginning in verse 1.

  7. And all the people gathered as one man into the square before the water gate.

  8. And they told Ezra the scribe to bring the book of the law of Moses that the Lord had commanded Israel.

  9. So Ezra the priest brought the law before the assembly, both men and women,

  10. and all who could understand what they heard.

  11. And on the first day of the seven month.

  12. And he read from it facing the square before the water gate from early morning until midday,

  13. in the presence of the men and the women and those who could understand.

  14. And the ears of all the people were attentive to the book of the law.

  15. And Ezra the scribe stood at a wooden platform that they had made for the purpose.

  16. And beside him stood, we'll say six men to his right without reading all those names,

  17. and seven men to his left.

  18. Verse 5.

  19. And Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people, for he was above all the people.

  20. And as he opened it, all the people stood.

  21. And Ezra blessed the Lord, the great God.

  22. And all the people answered, Amen, Amen.

  23. Lifting up their hands.

  24. And they bowed their heads and worshipped the Lord with their faces to the ground.

  25. Also, thirteen other men that were Levites helped the people to understand the law while the people remained in their places.

  26. This is verse 8 now.

  27. They read from the book from the law of God clearly, and they gave the sense so that the people understood the reading.

  28. And Nehemiah, who was the governor, and Ezra the priest and scribe, and the Levites who taught the people,

  29. said to all the people,

  30. This day is holy to the Lord your God.

  31. Do not mourn or weep.

  32. For all the people wept as they heard the words of the law.

  33. Then he said to them,

  34. Go your way, eat the fat and drink sweet wine,

  35. and send portions to anyone who has nothing ready.

  36. For this day is holy to our Lord.

  37. And do not be grieved, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.

  38. So the Levites calmed all the people, saying,

  39. Be quiet, for this day is holy.

  40. Do not be grieved.

  41. And all the people went their way to eat and drink,

  42. and to send portions, and to make great rejoicing,

  43. because they had understood the words that were declared to them.

  44. On the second day, the heads of fathers' houses of all the people,

  45. with the priests and the Levites,

  46. came together to Ezra the scribe,

  47. in order to study the words of the law.

  48. And they found it written in the law,

  49. that the Lord had commanded by Moses,

  50. that the people of Israel should dwell in booths,

  51. or tabernacles, during the feast of the seven months.

  52. And that they should proclaim it,

  53. and publish it in all their towns, and in Jerusalem.

  54. Go out to the hills, and bring branches of olive,

  55. wild olive, myrtle, palm, and other leafy trees,

  56. to make booths, as it is written.

  57. So the people went out, and brought them,

  58. and made booths for themselves, each on his roof.

  59. And in their courts, and in the courts of the house of God,

  60. and in the square at the water gate,

  61. and in the square at the gate of Ephraim.

  62. And all the assembly of those who had returned from the captivity,

  63. made booths, and lived in the booths.

  64. For from the days of Jeshua, the son of Nun,

  65. to that day the people of Israel had not done so.

  66. And there was very great rejoicing.

  67. And day by day, from the first to the last day,

  68. he read from the book of God.

  69. They kept the feast seven days,

  70. and on the eighth day, there was a solemn assembly,

  71. according to the rule.

  72. Let's pray together.

  73. Father God, we praise you again for Christ,

  74. and we thank you that he was the word of God,

  75. a physical manifestation,

  76. a thing that we could tangibly touch,

  77. and see of who you are.

  78. And we thank you also that your word is the same.

  79. The very words, that it was both written by men,

  80. but inspired by you.

  81. So we could say,

  82. who wrote the book of Nehemiah?

  83. Probably Ezra.

  84. With a bit of Nehemiah's input.

  85. But we could also say,

  86. who wrote the book of Nehemiah?

  87. God wrote the book of Nehemiah.

  88. So I pray, Father, this day that by your spirit,

  89. you will speak to us from your word.

  90. That we will approach it with expectation,

  91. in trembling,

  92. because we get to meet with our God.

  93. We pray this in Christ's name.

  94. Amen.

  95. So to catch some of you up,

  96. which by the way, it's very good to see.

  97. Many of your faces I haven't seen in a while.

  98. It's always hard sometimes to preach,

  99. and catch people's faces I haven't seen in a long time,

  100. because I really want to stop and go,

  101. oh hey!

  102. I'm going to try not to do that this morning.

  103. But to catch you up,

  104. the book of Nehemiah, where we've been,

  105. we've seen that God has brought news to Nehemiah,

  106. who was wintering in Susa,

  107. as cupbearer to the king,

  108. Artaxerxes, the king of Persia.

  109. And he brings news of the state of God's people.

  110. And God's people are in a bit of a shambles

  111. back in Jerusalem.

  112. The wall has yet to be rebuilt.

  113. They've been back from exile now for some 90 years.

  114. And they're still in a poor state.

  115. And the issue for Nehemiah is not that the city is not rebuilt,

  116. but that the condition of the people

  117. are not in good repair.

  118. And in this day, the way that God was glorified,

  119. the way that people saw who God was,

  120. was by how his people were doing.

  121. The same is true today of the church.

  122. This is the way people gaze upon the glory of God,

  123. see the redemptive work of Christ,

  124. is in the state of his people.

  125. Not in the building of cities and grand walls to protect ourselves,

  126. not in massive amounts of trade,

  127. but we have a new set of standards,

  128. a new way by which we live.

  129. And that's this holy calling that we've been called to.

  130. To be holy and to bring about holiness in the life of others.

  131. So, Nehemiah's heart is moved by this report.

  132. God moves in him and grieves him

  133. and moves him to prayer in chapter 1.

  134. We see Nehemiah sovereignly placed in this unique position

  135. as cupbearer to the king.

  136. Certainly, to be able to bring influence,

  137. to be a trusted friend of the king

  138. as the one who tasted his wine.

  139. We've seen him request of the king,

  140. and the king, for no good apparent reason

  141. other than God's work in his heart,

  142. gave permission to Nehemiah

  143. to go back and rebuild the wall,

  144. which was to go against an edict

  145. that he had issued some years earlier

  146. to stop the building of the wall.

  147. Not only that, but King Artaxerxes gives a blank check.

  148. He gives him his own credit

  149. to go and get the materials he needs

  150. for the building of the wall.

  151. It's recorded here in Nehemiah chapter 1, verse 8.

    Nehemiah 1:8

  152. Nehemiah's words,

  153. For the good hand of God was upon me.

  154. We see this work, this sovereign work.

  155. So, Nehemiah's now returned.

  156. He's surveyed the wall.

  157. He's rallied the Israelites to rebuild.

  158. They've rebuilt the wall.

  159. 52 days this work was completed.

  160. And yet the work to be done in Israel

  161. has yet to really begin in its entirety.

  162. And here we see the beginning of that.

  163. The bringing about of revival amongst the people.

  164. Now, let's say to you,

  165. we see it recorded here in chapter 8.

  166. Kind of what seems to be the official beginning of that.

  167. And many commentators would say

  168. that we had a physical work taking place

  169. up until this point.

  170. And now here is when the spiritual work begins.

  171. But I say to you that spiritual work

  172. has been going on already.

  173. We see that God has been working

  174. and moving amongst the people.

  175. The fact that they even rose up to build

  176. was a mighty work of God.

  177. The evidences of what God was doing in their heart

  178. is in the building.

  179. And now we see it ramp up

  180. to a whole new level.

  181. This revival that comes about.

  182. But before we move on,

  183. we have a bit of a problem.

  184. I think a problem of definition.

  185. definition.

  186. Because when I say the word revival,

  187. lots of different things may spring up in your mind.

  188. I hope to show you over the next few weeks

  189. what ought to be springing up in your mind

  190. when we see this.

  191. The word revival or to revive

  192. appears throughout the scriptures.

  193. It is used on occasion to speak of those

  194. who have been sick or even dead

  195. and were brought back to life.

  196. But more often it is used to speak

  197. of the bringing about

  198. of a new burning,

  199. a new desire for God

  200. in the hearts of men.

  201. We see revivals happen throughout the scriptures

  202. no less than ten times

  203. in corporate ways.

  204. This being one of them.

  205. Revival in the scriptures

  206. has affected whole nations.

  207. People groups.

  208. We see that to be true

  209. throughout history today,

  210. throughout the history of the church.

  211. our own country experienced a revival

  212. known as the Great Awakening

  213. led by men like George Whitefield

  214. and Jonathan Edwards.

  215. This is the revival

  216. that we are talking about.

  217. A couple of quick quotes for me.

  218. One from Andrew Murray says,

  219. A true revival

  220. means nothing less than a revolution.

  221. Casting out the spirit of worldliness,

  222. making God's love triumph

  223. in the heart.

  224. J.I. Packer said,

  225. Revival is God's quickening visitation

  226. of His people,

  227. touching their hearts

  228. and deepening His work of grace

  229. in their lives.

  230. This is something we should long for.

  231. Revival is when God comes close to earth

  232. and God's people respond appropriately.

  233. Now that's not to say

  234. when we're not in a time of revival

  235. that God's not at work,

  236. that God isn't working amongst His church.

  237. But it seems,

  238. if we look at history,

  239. that God visits in special ways

  240. at particular times the church.

  241. And I think,

  242. this is just Nathan's opinion,

  243. but I think that the American church

  244. is poised for a revival right now.

  245. As we see it on the continual decline,

  246. both in number and in fervency,

  247. I believe it's time

  248. for a new close swinging of God

  249. to bring about repentance

  250. and a return to Him.

  251. In fact,

  252. for the past four or five years,

  253. it's been one of my major prayers

  254. to pray that revival would come

  255. and that God would use our church

  256. to help catalyze such a thing.

  257. So this is what we mean by revival.

  258. A revival is not something

  259. that can be put on a calendar.

  260. All of this sounds good,

  261. and some of you

  262. with the wrong understanding of revival

  263. might say,

  264. well good,

  265. get the church calendar out.

  266. We can make a sign.

  267. That is not revival.

  268. I went to a conference

  269. and the little introduction

  270. to the pamphlet of the conference

  271. stated that we were about to have

  272. a good old-fashioned Holy Spirit revival.

  273. Great.

  274. I'm glad you have the power

  275. to bring such a thing about.

  276. But we don't.

  277. We have no ability of our own

  278. to bring about revival.

  279. Revival is the sovereign work

  280. of the Spirit of God.

  281. So hear that.

  282. Revival is the sovereign work

  283. of the Spirit of God.

  284. However,

  285. I want to show you four evidences

  286. of God-sent revival.

  287. I want to show you four things

  288. from chapter 8,

  289. chapter 9,

  290. and chapter 10

  291. in the coming weeks

  292. that are evidences

  293. of God-sent revival.

  294. And certainly,

  295. if this is what the people of God do

  296. when God comes close,

  297. visits them in a special way,

  298. ignites their hearts,

  299. ought we also endeavor

  300. to live in this way?

  301. We should, right?

  302. We should want to do these things.

  303. Let me give you all four of them

  304. and then we're going to address

  305. the first two today.

  306. If revival is God-sent,

  307. God's people will be praying.

  308. That's number one.

  309. If revival is God-sent,

  310. God's people will reestablish

  311. the Word of God

  312. as the ultimate authority

  313. in their lives.

  314. Number three,

  315. if revival is God-sent,

  316. God's people will recognize

  317. their defiance of God

  318. and view His chastisement

  319. as just.

  320. And number four,

  321. if revival is God-sent,

  322. God's people will turn

  323. from their defiance

  324. to obedience.

  325. These are things

  326. that we are all commanded

  327. to press into anyway, right?

  328. But hear me carefully, right?

  329. This is not a set of presuppositions

  330. that if we do these things,

  331. then revival will come.

  332. These are just the evidences

  333. of the God-sent revival.

  334. So let's look at the first two together.

  335. Just kind of a precursor, number one.

  336. If revival is God-sent,

  337. God's people will be praying.

  338. We see evidence here

  339. of Nehemiah's prayers.

  340. I'll tell you, in fact,

  341. when I set out to preach

  342. through the book of Nehemiah,

  343. I thought it was very timely

  344. for our church

  345. in a kind of a growing

  346. transitioning stage

  347. to talk about the work

  348. and the effort

  349. that needed to go into things.

  350. I honestly,

  351. as many times as I had read

  352. through Nehemiah,

  353. we had done a study together,

  354. the men did,

  355. a couple of years ago

  356. through the book of Nehemiah,

  357. I never saw

  358. how prevalent prayer was

  359. throughout the book.

  360. That God starts

  361. by moving Nehemiah to pray

  362. on behalf of his people.

  363. So we have Nehemiah's prayers.

  364. I believe there are

  365. ten recorded prayers

  366. in the fourteen chapters.

  367. Nehemiah's prayers,

  368. chapter one,

  369. verse five through eleven,

  370. chapter two,

  371. verse four,

  372. chapter six,

  373. verse nine,

  374. and again in verse fourteen.

  375. We see the Israelites' prayers,

  376. chapter four,

  377. verse nine,

  378. and then here in our text,

  379. chapter eight,

  380. verse six,

  381. we see a prayer led by Ezra,

  382. and I have to tell you honestly

  383. as I studied all this

  384. the past couple of weeks,

  385. I wish we had more details.

  386. I wish I had a record

  387. of the prayer that is prayed.

  388. It simply just says,

  389. and Ezra,

  390. bless the Lord,

  391. the great God.

  392. And here's the response

  393. of the people

  394. as they joined in.

  395. And all the people answered.

  396. Thirty to fifty thousand people,

  397. scholars say,

  398. were the Israelites' numbers

  399. at this time.

  400. And all the people answered,

  401. Amen,

  402. Amen,

  403. or let it be,

  404. so may it be.

  405. And they say it twice

  406. to give emphasis

  407. to that type of thing.

  408. And so here even

  409. at the very beginning,

  410. when the book of the law

  411. is open to be read,

  412. it begins in prayer.

  413. Jesus prayed.

  414. Well,

  415. I'll take an example from him,

  416. shouldn't we?

  417. Just look at one example

  418. of Jesus' prayer.

  419. Luke 6,

  420. 12.

  421. In these days,

  422. he being Jesus,

  423. went out to the mountain

  424. to pray.

  425. And all night,

  426. he continued in prayer

  427. to God.

  428. When was the last time

  429. you devoted yourself

  430. to prayer in that way?

  431. Paul instructed

  432. the Philippian church

  433. to pray.

  434. Philippians chapter 4,

    Philippians 4 chapter mention

  435. last half of 5 and 6,

  436. The Lord is at hand.

  437. Do not be anxious

  438. about anything,

  439. but in everything,

  440. by prayer and supplication,

  441. with thanksgiving,

  442. let your requests

  443. be made known

  444. to God.

  445. We do not have

  446. because we do not ask.

  447. A.T. Pearson,

  448. a wonderful pastor

  449. and biographer,

  450. wrote my favorite biography

  451. of George Mueller,

  452. which my father handed to me

  453. at an early age.

  454. He said,

  455. From the day of Pentecost,

  456. there has not been

  457. one great spiritual waking

  458. in any land

  459. which has not begun

  460. in a union

  461. of prayer.

  462. He also wrote,

  463. Wherever the church

  464. is aroused

  465. and the world's wickedness

  466. arrested,

  467. somebody has been praying.

  468. Charles Haddon Spurgeon

  469. said,

  470. Whether we like it or not,

  471. asking is the rule

  472. of the kingdom.

  473. If you may have everything

  474. by asking in His name,

  475. and nothing without asking,

  476. I beg you to see

  477. how absolutely vital

  478. prayer is.

  479. Jonathan Edwards,

  480. one of the great pastors

  481. of the Great Awakening,

  482. who was a man

  483. who wasn't very entertaining

  484. in his delivery.

  485. We talked a bit about that

  486. last week,

  487. and I may address it

  488. more today.

  489. His preaching

  490. was steeped

  491. in prayer.

  492. Content-driven

  493. and steeped

  494. in prayer.

  495. In fact,

  496. often he stood

  497. at the very back

  498. of their meeting places

  499. and read very dryly

  500. a manuscript.

  501. But it was said

  502. that people would cling

  503. to the pillars

  504. and the backs

  505. of the pews

  506. in the church

  507. in fear

  508. that the floor

  509. would open up

  510. and they'd be swallowed

  511. into hell

  512. because of the great

  513. high view

  514. they had of God's

  515. holiness.

  516. He wrote,

  517. Matthew Henry,

  518. the great commentator,

  519. said,

  520. when God intends

  521. great mercy

  522. for his people,

  523. the first thing

  524. he does

  525. is set them

  526. a praying.

  527. You probably can

  528. remember that one,

  529. I hope.

  530. When God intends

  531. great mercy

  532. for his people,

  533. the first thing

  534. he does

  535. is set them

  536. a praying.

  537. Prayer is vital

  538. for our Christian living.

  539. Certainly,

  540. if we want to see

  541. revival come

  542. on this land.

  543. So if revival

  544. is God sent,

  545. God's people

  546. will be

  547. praying.

  548. If revival

  549. is God sent,

  550. God's people

  551. will reestablish

  552. the word of God

  553. as the ultimate

  554. authority

  555. in their lives.

  556. Beloved,

  557. we neglect

  558. the very

  559. word

  560. of God

  561. to us.

  562. We have

  563. it in abundance.

  564. And maybe the fact

  565. that we have it

  566. in abundance

  567. is one of our

  568. problems.

  569. that we have

  570. so many

  571. different versions

  572. of it.

  573. So many

  574. different study

  575. Bibles.

  576. So many

  577. different bindings

  578. even on our

  579. Bibles themselves.

  580. You may have

  581. your favorite

  582. that you carry

  583. around,

  584. but you probably

  585. have a shelf

  586. of them

  587. at home.

  588. In places

  589. in the world

  590. where the Bible

  591. is scarce,

  592. where the word

  593. of God

  594. there aren't

  595. copies that

  596. exist,

  597. I am told

  598. that people

  599. are desperate

  600. to hear it.

  601. We'll walk

  602. for days.

  603. We'll ride

  604. bicycles.

  605. will sit

  606. for hours

  607. and hours

  608. and hours

  609. to hear the

  610. preaching of it.

  611. We'll weep

  612. and rejoice

  613. that they get

  614. to hear

  615. words from

  616. the Almighty

  617. God.

  618. And yet

  619. many of us

  620. struggle to

  621. sit and open

  622. it once a day

  623. and read

  624. from it

  625. for 15

  626. minutes.

  627. We neglect

  628. this precious

  629. gift

  630. that was given

  631. to us.

  632. Paul wrote

  633. in 1 Thessalonians

  634. 2.13

  635. And we also

  636. thank God

  637. constantly for this.

  638. that when you

  639. received the

  640. word of God

  641. which you

  642. heard from

  643. us,

  644. you accepted

  645. it,

  646. not as the

  647. word of men,

  648. but as what

  649. it really

  650. is,

  651. the word

  652. of God,

  653. which is at

  654. work in you,

  655. believers.

  656. Paul's

  657. thanksgiving

  658. was overflowing

  659. in his writing

  660. that they

  661. accepted that

  662. this was in

  663. fact the

  664. word of God.

  665. Hebrews 4.12

  666. I hope you're

  667. familiar with,

  668. says,

  669. for the word

  670. of God

  671. is living

  672. and active.

  673. It's sharper

  674. than any

  675. two-edged

  676. sword,

  677. piercing to

  678. the division

  679. of soul

  680. and of spirit,

  681. of joints

  682. and of marrow,

  683. and discerning

  684. the thoughts

  685. and intentions

  686. of the heart.

  687. The word

  688. of God

  689. is the

  690. spirit's

  691. instrument.

  692. It is the

  693. tool that

  694. he uses

  695. to bring

  696. correction

  697. and direction

  698. in our

  699. lives.

  700. The spirit

  701. of God

  702. begins working

  703. in the hearts

  704. of men

  705. by first

  706. drawing

  707. his sword

  708. from its

  709. scabbard.

  710. That is

  711. the word

  712. of God.

  713. It is the

  714. supreme rule

  715. and authority

  716. for our

  717. lives.

  718. Many people

  719. give lip

  720. service

  721. to the

  722. sufficiency

  723. and efficacy

  724. of the

  725. Bible,

  726. but yet

  727. do not

  728. read it.

  729. In their

  730. very actions

  731. they deny

  732. what they

  733. say with

  734. their lips.

  735. Many

  736. people,

  737. as they

  738. look for

  739. direction

  740. in this

  741. world,

  742. will take

  743. small bits

  744. of biblical

  745. wisdom

  746. and add

  747. to it

  748. a bit

  749. of pop

  750. psychology

  751. to arrive

  752. at their

  753. decisions.

  754. Some will

  755. take small

  756. bits of

  757. biblical

  758. instruction

  759. and add

  760. to it

  761. some

  762. business

  763. methodology.

  764. Some will

  765. take small

  766. bits of

  767. biblical

  768. guidance

  769. and add

  770. to it

  771. the opinions

  772. of a

  773. friend.

  774. Beloved,

  775. the Bible

  776. is to be

  777. the guide

  778. and rule

  779. of our

  780. lives.

  781. We need

  782. to re-establish

  783. it as the

  784. ultimate

  785. authority.

  786. Proverbs

  787. 8,

  788. 32-34,

  789. the Lord

  790. speaks here

  791. and says,

  792. And now,

  793. O sons,

  794. listen to

  795. me.

  796. Blessed are

  797. those who

  798. keep my

  799. ways.

  800. Hear

  801. instruction

  802. and be

  803. wise,

  804. and do

  805. not

  806. neglect

  807. it.

  808. Blessed

  809. is the

  810. one who

  811. listens

  812. to me,

  813. watching

  814. daily at

  815. my gates,

  816. waiting

  817. beside my

  818. doors.

  819. In Luke

  820. 11,

  821. 28,

  822. Jesus

  823. says,

  824. Blessed

  825. are those

  826. who hear

  827. the word

  828. of God

  829. and keep

  830. it.

  831. God's

  832. God's

  833. people

  834. will

  835. recognize

  836. this.

  837. They

  838. will

  839. treat

  840. the

  841. word

  842. of

  843. God

  844. as

  845. the

  846. ultimate

  847. authority.

  848. And there

  849. will be

  850. no

  851. revival

  852. amongst

  853. people

  854. who do

  855. not

  856. love

  857. and read

  858. and hear

  859. and proclaim

  860. the words

  861. of the

  862. living

  863. God.

  864. We see

  865. that to

  866. be the

  867. case.

  868. This

  869. work

  870. that's

  871. happening

  872. by the

  873. Spirit

  874. is moving

  875. in the

  876. Israelites,

  877. this

  878. mass

  879. number

  880. of

  881. people

  882. to

  883. reestablish

  884. it

  885. in

  886. this

  887. way.

  888. And I

  889. want to

  890. show you

  891. from the

  892. text

  893. today

  894. four

  895. observations

  896. in this

  897. regard.

  898. Firstly,

  899. take a

  900. look at

  901. their

  902. eagerness.

  903. Take a

  904. look at

  905. their

  906. eagerness

  907. to see

  908. from the

  909. word

  910. of God.

  911. The law

  912. we're told

  913. here,

  914. the books

  915. of Moses,

  916. Genesis,

  917. Exodus,

  918. Leviticus,

  919. Numbers,

  920. Deuteronomy.

  921. That's what's

  922. being read

  923. at this

  924. time.

  925. Notice

  926. at the

  927. beginning

  928. of chapter

  929. 8,

  930. all of

  931. the

  932. alls,

  933. I've

  934. got them

  935. underlined

  936. here.

  937. Verse

  938. 1,

  939. all the

  940. people

  941. gathered.

  942. Verse

  943. 2,

  944. both men

  945. and women

  946. and all

  947. who could

  948. understand,

  949. which I

  950. take to

  951. mean

  952. children,

  953. he's adding

  954. this detail

  955. for us,

  956. that even

  957. the children

  958. were there,

  959. those who

  960. could hear

  961. what was

  962. being said

  963. and understand,

  964. and I

  965. would take

  966. that a

  967. step further

  968. to say,

  969. if all

  970. the people

  971. were there,

  972. he doesn't

  973. make a caveat

  974. for nursery

  975. workers.

  976. So it probably

  977. means that the

  978. infants were

  979. there as well

  980. because all

  981. the people

  982. were there

  983. being able

  984. to hear the

  985. instruction.

  986. They weren't

  987. stuck off

  988. in some

  989. room or

  990. a building

  991. someplace else

  992. at a different

  993. gate in the

  994. city,

  995. but they were

  996. all gathered

  997. together so

  998. that all

  999. could hear

  1000. the instruction.

  1001. Look at

  1002. verse 3,

  1003. all the

  1004. people

  1005. were

  1006. attentive,

  1007. eager to

  1008. hear what

  1009. God may

  1010. say.

  1011. Verse 5,

  1012. all the

  1013. people,

  1014. for he

  1015. was above

  1016. all the

  1017. people.

  1018. The prayer,

  1019. all the

  1020. people

  1021. answered.

  1022. It goes

  1023. on in

  1024. this way.

  1025. The people

  1026. of God

  1027. were eager

  1028. to hear

  1029. the words

  1030. of God.

  1031. Note 2

  1032. in verse

  1033. 1,

  1034. that it's

  1035. not that

  1036. Nehemiah

  1037. and Ezra

  1038. got together

  1039. and made

  1040. a plan

  1041. to have

  1042. a big

  1043. rally.

  1044. They wanted

  1045. a conference

  1046. to take

  1047. place,

  1048. so they

  1049. put together

  1050. this massive

  1051. conference

  1052. that they

  1053. built the

  1054. stage that

  1055. he was

  1056. going to

  1057. stand upon

  1058. so that

  1059. everybody

  1060. could hear

  1061. the reading

  1062. of the

  1063. law.

  1064. But the

  1065. people

  1066. did it.

  1067. Verse 1,

  1068. and they

  1069. told Ezra

  1070. the scribe

  1071. to bring

  1072. the book

  1073. of the

  1074. law of

  1075. Moses

  1076. the Lord

  1077. had

  1078. commanded

  1079. Israel.

  1080. They told

  1081. him to

  1082. bring it.

  1083. They said

  1084. we have

  1085. this event

  1086. that's going

  1087. to happen

  1088. at the

  1089. water gate

  1090. and we

  1091. want you

  1092. to come

  1093. and bring

  1094. the copy

  1095. of God's

  1096. word that

  1097. you have

  1098. and read

  1099. it to

  1100. us.

  1101. They built

  1102. a platform.

  1103. There was

  1104. some planning

  1105. that went

  1106. into this

  1107. thing.

  1108. It wasn't

  1109. a spontaneous

  1110. gathering

  1111. of all

  1112. the people

  1113. of Israel.

  1114. Word had

  1115. gone out.

  1116. There had

  1117. been a

  1118. seeking,

  1119. a gathering.

  1120. Can you

  1121. just imagine

  1122. from Ezra's

  1123. perspective

  1124. what a

  1125. wonderful

  1126. thing

  1127. this would

  1128. have been?

  1129. Because

  1130. remember

  1131. that Ezra

  1132. has been

  1133. back in

  1134. the land

  1135. now for

  1136. 14 years

  1137. faithfully

  1138. carrying out

  1139. the duty

  1140. of a priest.

  1141. He had

  1142. been teaching

  1143. the word

  1144. of God

  1145. for 14

  1146. years.

  1147. This is an

  1148. encouragement

  1149. to me.

  1150. I'm going

  1151. to continue

  1152. to plot

  1153. on and

  1154. teach the

  1155. word of

  1156. God to

  1157. people in

  1158. the hopes

  1159. that something

  1160. like this

  1161. happens one

  1162. day.

  1163. What an

  1164. amazing thing.

  1165. He receives

  1166. an invitation.

  1167. Please come

  1168. read the

  1169. word of the

  1170. law to us.

  1171. All of us.

  1172. We're all

  1173. going to be

  1174. there.

  1175. We built

  1176. you a big

  1177. stage that

  1178. you can

  1179. stand way

  1180. up on

  1181. because we

  1182. want everybody

  1183. to hear

  1184. the words

  1185. of God.

  1186. We know

  1187. you've been

  1188. plotting on

  1189. and teaching

  1190. these things

  1191. and pushing

  1192. forward.

  1193. And in

  1194. fact,

  1195. that they

  1196. even knew

  1197. that they

  1198. ought to

  1199. gather

  1200. was a

  1201. work of

  1202. Ezra.

  1203. Notice that

  1204. it was a

  1205. very particular

  1206. day.

  1207. We get the

  1208. record here.

  1209. It's not

  1210. just for our

  1211. dating,

  1212. but it's the

  1213. first day

  1214. of the

  1215. seventh month.

  1216. And the

  1217. Israelites

  1218. knew,

  1219. I would argue,

  1220. because of

  1221. Ezra's teaching

  1222. to them,

  1223. that there

  1224. was a

  1225. prescribed

  1226. feast that

  1227. was to

  1228. happen on

  1229. this day.

  1230. It's called

  1231. the Feast

  1232. of Trumpets,

  1233. or if you

  1234. prefer in

  1235. Hebrew,

  1236. Rosh Hashanah.

  1237. You guys

  1238. heard that

  1239. term before,

  1240. I'm sure.

  1241. The Feast

  1242. of Trumpets.

  1243. And it

  1244. was a

  1245. day that

  1246. the Israelites

  1247. were meant

  1248. to rejoice.

  1249. They were

  1250. supposed to

  1251. play trumpets

  1252. all over

  1253. Israel.

  1254. It was

  1255. meant to

  1256. be going

  1257. on.

  1258. It was

  1259. supposed to

  1260. be a

  1261. big thing

  1262. because

  1263. nine days

  1264. later was

  1265. the Day

  1266. of Atonement.

  1267. The day

  1268. when the

  1269. high priest

  1270. would take

  1271. sacrifice

  1272. into the

  1273. Holy of

  1274. Holies

  1275. and make

  1276. sacrifice

  1277. for the

  1278. people of

  1279. Israel.

  1280. this

  1281. symbol,

  1282. this action

  1283. that took

  1284. place,

  1285. which told

  1286. us of

  1287. the coming

  1288. great

  1289. sacrifice.

  1290. That is,

  1291. Jesus Christ,

  1292. the Lamb of

  1293. God,

  1294. the one that

  1295. could fully

  1296. and finally

  1297. take away

  1298. the sins

  1299. of his

  1300. people.

  1301. This was

  1302. the day

  1303. that they

  1304. were coming

  1305. together

  1306. to celebrate,

  1307. built a

  1308. stage for it,

  1309. and said,

  1310. come and

  1311. read the

  1312. Word of

  1313. God to

  1314. us.

  1315. Notice

  1316. in verse

  1317. three,

  1318. the time

  1319. frame that

  1320. this happened

  1321. in.

  1322. First,

  1323. that it

  1324. happened

  1325. from early

  1326. morning.

  1327. We start

  1328. meeting at

  1329. 1030,

  1330. and sometimes

  1331. that is a

  1332. real struggle.

  1333. They had

  1334. the whole

  1335. family up

  1336. and ready

  1337. to go.

  1338. We don't

  1339. know exactly

  1340. what early

  1341. morning means,

  1342. but we do

  1343. know that

  1344. this event

  1345. took place

  1346. from early

  1347. morning until

  1348. midday,

  1349. which meant

  1350. literally noon.

  1351. So five

  1352. to seven

  1353. hours this

  1354. took place.

  1355. I try

  1356. really hard

  1357. to keep

  1358. these

  1359. sermons

  1360. at 45

  1361. minutes

  1362. for you

  1363. guys.

  1364. We may

  1365. need to

  1366. devote

  1367. ourselves

  1368. in a

  1369. higher

  1370. degree

  1371. to

  1372. God's

  1373. Word.

  1374. We may

  1375. be a

  1376. little bit

  1377. numb to

  1378. it,

  1379. and not

  1380. desire it,

  1381. and not

  1382. be eager

  1383. enough to

  1384. come and

  1385. hear its

  1386. teaching.

  1387. And then

  1388. notice in

  1389. verse 13

  1390. that this

  1391. didn't end

  1392. here.

  1393. It wasn't

  1394. just this

  1395. day,

  1396. just this

  1397. five to

  1398. seven hours,

  1399. but on

  1400. the second

  1401. day,

  1402. something else

  1403. happens.

  1404. And this

  1405. time,

  1406. all the

  1407. heads of

  1408. the father's

  1409. houses,

  1410. they come

  1411. together,

  1412. and they

  1413. said,

  1414. I'm postulating

  1415. to Ezra,

  1416. we can't keep

  1417. getting everybody

  1418. together every

  1419. single day.

  1420. It's just not

  1421. going to work.

  1422. There's no way

  1423. that you can

  1424. read in this

  1425. way all of

  1426. these days.

  1427. So we're

  1428. going to come

  1429. together and

  1430. let you crash

  1431. course us on

  1432. the law,

  1433. and we'll

  1434. take it back

  1435. to our

  1436. houses.

  1437. So notice

  1438. that there

  1439. in verse

  1440. 13,

  1441. and we

  1442. see that

  1443. they discover

  1444. some things

  1445. along the

  1446. way.

  1447. There was

  1448. a great

  1449. eagerness

  1450. amongst the

  1451. people to

  1452. hear and

  1453. to learn,

  1454. to love,

  1455. to proclaim

  1456. the word

  1457. of God.

  1458. Notice

  1459. secondly,

  1460. their reverence.

  1461. Verse

  1462. five,

  1463. Nehemiah

  1464. ascends the

  1465. stage,

  1466. he opens

  1467. up the

  1468. book that

  1469. he has

  1470. with him,

  1471. and all

  1472. the people

  1473. stood.

  1474. That's the

  1475. record.

  1476. As he

  1477. opened it,

  1478. all the

  1479. people

  1480. stood.

  1481. Now,

  1482. I'm not

  1483. suggesting that

  1484. that's something

  1485. that we

  1486. ought to do,

  1487. that we

  1488. have to

  1489. stand for

  1490. the reading

  1491. of God's

  1492. word.

  1493. Many people

  1494. do practice

  1495. it in this

  1496. way.

  1497. Many

  1498. denominations,

  1499. that is a

  1500. normative

  1501. thing.

  1502. When the

  1503. word of

  1504. God is

  1505. read,

  1506. everybody

  1507. stands.

  1508. It's the

  1509. practice

  1510. done that

  1511. way.

  1512. What I

  1513. care about

  1514. is the

  1515. heart of

  1516. what's

  1517. going on

  1518. when the

  1519. word of

  1520. God

  1521. is being

  1522. read.

  1523. I don't

  1524. really expect

  1525. you to

  1526. tune in to

  1527. every single

  1528. thing that

  1529. I say.

  1530. The words

  1531. that come

  1532. out of my

  1533. mouth are

  1534. the words

  1535. of Nathan.

  1536. My hope

  1537. is,

  1538. and my

  1539. great desire

  1540. throughout the

  1541. week is

  1542. that I'm

  1543. simply

  1544. explaining to

  1545. you the

  1546. same way

  1547. men did

  1548. here,

  1549. the words

  1550. of God.

  1551. But how

  1552. many of you

  1553. just zone

  1554. out when

  1555. the word

  1556. of God

  1557. is being

  1558. read?

  1559. I labor

  1560. to read

  1561. well in

  1562. the hopes

  1563. that you'll

  1564. hear the

  1565. things that

  1566. are happening

  1567. in the

  1568. word of

  1569. God.

  1570. How many

  1571. of you do

  1572. other

  1573. activities

  1574. during a

  1575. sermon?

  1576. Fill in

  1577. all the

  1578. little

  1579. O's

  1580. in the

  1581. text.

  1582. You see

  1583. somebody's

  1584. Bible

  1585. that's

  1586. like that?

  1587. Some

  1588. people doodle,

  1589. it helps

  1590. them listen.

  1591. My wife's

  1592. one of

  1593. those.

  1594. You ever

  1595. see my

  1596. wife doodling?

  1597. She's paying

  1598. attention.

  1599. That's a

  1600. good thing.

  1601. How many

  1602. of you

  1603. get

  1604. extremely

  1605. distracted

  1606. and you

  1607. have no

  1608. reverence

  1609. for the

  1610. very

  1611. words

  1612. of God?

  1613. Notice

  1614. that the

  1615. reverence

  1616. goes beyond

  1617. just the

  1618. standing

  1619. and the

  1620. listening.

  1621. We don't

  1622. know if

  1623. they stood

  1624. up for

  1625. this entire

  1626. period of

  1627. time.

  1628. I would

  1629. guess not.

  1630. That would

  1631. be a

  1632. challenging

  1633. thing to

  1634. do.

  1635. However,

  1636. what's

  1637. probably

  1638. happening

  1639. here,

  1640. and again,

  1641. I wish

  1642. I had

  1643. all the

  1644. details,

  1645. but you

  1646. notice that

  1647. he had

  1648. six men

  1649. on his

  1650. left and

  1651. six on

  1652. his right.

  1653. I can't

  1654. imagine what

  1655. it's like

  1656. to try to

  1657. read to

  1658. a group

  1659. of 30,000

  1660. to 50,000

  1661. people.

  1662. What kind

  1663. of energy

  1664. it must

  1665. take to

  1666. read out

  1667. loud with

  1668. no PA

  1669. system and

  1670. simply just

  1671. trying to

  1672. project yourself

  1673. as best you

  1674. can over a

  1675. group like

  1676. that.

  1677. I'm sure

  1678. that it was

  1679. exhausting.

  1680. I love

  1681. my Sunday

  1682. afternoon naps.

  1683. I am tired

  1684. after I get

  1685. up and do

  1686. this.

  1687. I want to

  1688. go rest.

  1689. And here

  1690. they are for

  1691. an entire

  1692. morning doing

  1693. this.

  1694. And so I

  1695. think what's

  1696. happening,

  1697. my best

  1698. guess,

  1699. is that they're

  1700. taking turns

  1701. doing this.

  1702. That there's a

  1703. process by which

  1704. the word of

  1705. God is being

  1706. read.

  1707. And Ezra is not

  1708. the only one

  1709. reading, but he

  1710. steps aside and

  1711. somebody else

  1712. reads.

  1713. And in fact,

  1714. you saw that

  1715. there were 13

  1716. other Levites.

  1717. And we see that

  1718. they have this

  1719. process they go

  1720. about that they

  1721. read from the

  1722. book, from the

  1723. law of God

  1724. clearly, and they

  1725. gave the sense

  1726. that the people

  1727. understood the

  1728. reading.

  1729. That's verse

  1730. 8.

  1731. And so what's

  1732. more than likely

  1733. happening is there's

  1734. a process happening

  1735. that one of these

  1736. men on the stage

  1737. gets up, reads

  1738. from the word of

  1739. God, takes a

  1740. break.

  1741. So maybe everybody

  1742. stood, heard from

  1743. the reading,

  1744. everybody sat down,

  1745. and then these 13

  1746. Levites would go

  1747. amongst the

  1748. people and help

  1749. them more clearly

  1750. understand.

  1751. Just expound

  1752. upon.

  1753. That's what

  1754. preaching really

  1755. should be.

  1756. That's the issue

  1757. at hand when we

  1758. talk about what is

  1759. expositional

  1760. preaching.

  1761. It's simply that,

  1762. just telling people

  1763. what the word of

  1764. God says, right?

  1765. Not piecing it

  1766. together to

  1767. reinforce what we

  1768. want to say, but

  1769. simply looking at a

  1770. text and saying,

  1771. this is what the

1772. word of God has to

  1773. say for you.

  1774. This is what we're

  1775. supposed to be doing

  1776. with the word of

  1777. God.

  1778. This is what God

  1779. means with what God

  1780. said, and that's the

  1781. process that's taking

  1782. place here.

  1783. But notice that beyond

  1784. the standing, right,

  1785. however that was, if

  1786. they stood the whole

  1787. time or stood and

  1788. sat, whatever may

  1789. have happened, they

  1790. worship in other ways

  1791. as well.

  1792. And it would seem

  1793. that it would have

  1794. been foreign to

  1795. them and probably

  1796. foreign to anybody

  1797. who's experiencing

  1798. revival that they

  1799. would hold back

  1800. anything from God.

  1801. And I am guilty

  1802. amongst you of this.

  1803. Right?

  1804. When I am moved

  1805. inside, I tend to

  1806. keep my arms down.

  1807. Right?

  1808. We're a pretty boring

  1809. group of people.

  1810. And I don't mean that

1811. as an offense to you

  1812. at all.

  1813. Right?

  1814. It may be just

  1815. perfectly fine that

  1816. we're that way.

  1817. But notice the people

  1818. here, they lifted up

  1819. their hands, they bowed

  1820. their heads, and they

  1821. worshiped with their

  1822. faces to the ground.

  1823. Right?

  1824. Which was a position

  1825. that gave reverence to,

  1826. that communicates that

1827. we are not worthy to be

1828. in the presence of the

  1829. Holy God.

  1830. They gave all of

  1831. themselves in their

  1832. reverence to the Word

  1833. of God being read.

  1834. Notice also their

  1835. responsiveness.

  1836. So their eagerness,

  1837. their reverence, and

  1838. their responsiveness.

  1839. Notice.

  1840. Look now further on,

  1841. down to verse 9.

  1842. The second part there

  1843. says,

  1844. For all the people

  1845. wept as they heard

1846. the words of the law.

  1847. All the people

  1848. wept.

  1849. It wasn't a little

  1850. group, first couple

  1851. of rows, that really

  1852. were being affected

  1853. by this.

  1854. You know, the

  1855. 50,000th man in the

  1856. very back wasn't

  1857. twiddling his thumbs

1858. waiting to get a meal.

  1859. Right?

  1860. All the people were

  1861. being affected by this

  1862. reading of the Word.

  1863. And as Ezra and

  1864. possibly other men

  1865. read, they were

  1866. seeing and beholding

  1867. the holiness of God.

  1868. And they were seeing

  1869. how very, very, very

  1870. short they fell of

  1871. this objective.

  1872. They're seeing their

  1873. own condition.

  1874. The way that they

  1875. had offended God.

1876. As the Word of God

  1877. was being read, an

  1878. ever-widening chasm

  1879. was opening up.

  1880. As if they're standing

  1881. or you're still on a

  1882. bank that's giving

1883. way and it starts to

1884. crumble and you take a

  1885. couple steps back and

  1886. it just keeps crumbling,

  1887. it just kept crumbling

  1888. and crumbling and

  1889. crumbling.

  1890. The expanse between

  1891. them and God got

  1892. bigger and bigger and

  1893. bigger and they

  1894. wept.

  1895. They responded to the

  1896. Word of God.

1897. They saw it as a

  1898. communication.

  1899. God was speaking to

  1900. them and they

  1901. responded.

  1902. There should be an

  1903. appropriate response to

  1904. the teaching of the

  1905. Word.

  1906. Now notice what's said

  1907. to them.

  1908. What the instruction

  1909. that's given to them

  1910. as they're weeping,

  1911. right?

  1912. There's this weeping and

  1913. mourning going on and

  1914. Nehemiah the governor,

  1915. Ezra the priest and

  1916. scribe, and the Levites

1917. who taught said to the

1918. people, and we see it in

  1919. three different places,

  1920. chapter 9, excuse me,

  1921. verse 9, verse 10, and

  1922. verse 11.

1923. This day is holy to the

  1924. Lord your God.

1925. Do not mourn or weep.

1926. Verse 10, go your way,

1927. eat the fat and drink

  1928. sweet wine and send

  1929. portions to anyone who

1930. has nothing for this day

1931. is holy to our Lord.

1932. And do not be grieved for

1933. the joy of the Lord is

  1934. your strength.

1935. Verse 11, be quiet for

  1936. the day is holy.

  1937. Do not be grieved.

  1938. The day is holy.

1939. The day is set apart.

  1940. Don't grieve.

  1941. The day is holy.

1942. The day is set apart.

  1943. Don't grieve.

1944. It was probably a great

  1945. surprise to Ezra, to

  1946. Nehemiah, to the

  1947. Levites that when they

1948. came together on a day,

  1949. remember the day of

1950. trumpets, a day that was

1951. supposed to be a day of

  1952. great joy, right?

1953. That's why it was set

  1954. apart.

1955. It was prescribed by God

1956. to be a day of rejoicing

  1957. and celebration.

  1958. Why?

  1959. Because the day of

  1960. atonement was close at

  1961. hand.

1962. So as they heard the law

1963. being read to them, and

  1964. as that ever widening

1965. expanse was open to them,

  1966. what they're saying to

1967. them is, don't be sad.

1968. Let the joy of the Lord be

  1969. your strength.

1970. The fact that in Him we

  1971. have the redemption of

  1972. our souls.

1973. Yes, the chasm is wide,

1974. but it has been closed by

1975. the goodness of our God.

  1976. That's what they're saying

  1977. to them, right?

1978. This is a day set aside for

  1979. joy.

1980. Now, that's not to say that

  1981. they're writing off

  1982. repentance, right?

  1983. They're not saying

  1984. contrition is not important.

1985. We're actually going to see

1986. in chapter 9 a great deal of

  1987. repentance over their sin.

1988. But this day was not for

  1989. that.

1990. This was a day to

  1991. celebrate the person and

  1992. work of Jesus Christ.

1993. They may not have realized

1994. that was happening on the

1995. Day of Atonement, but this

1996. is what that day was for.

  1997. Fourthly, notice their

  1998. obedience.

1999. This will be a full point,

  2000. right?

2001. When God sends revival, we

2002. will obey the Word of God.

2003. But let me just point it out

  2004. here as well.

  2005. Note their obedience.

2006. In verse 14, as they come

2007. back together on the second

2008. day and they open the book

2009. of the law again, they find

2010. something and they found it

2011. written in the law that the

2012. Lord had commanded Moses that

2013. the people of Israel should

2014. dwell in booths during the

2015. feast of the seventh month.

2016. So this is called the feast of

  2017. booths or sakat.

  2018. It's a time between the feast

2019. of the trumpets and the day of

2020. atonement that the people were

2021. meant to dwell in booths,

  2022. tabernacles, temporary shelters,

  2023. if you will.

2024. And it was to remind them of

2025. the sustaining work of God

2026. after He led them out of

  2027. Israel.

2028. They were led out into the

  2029. wilderness where they tarried

2030. for 40 years and God cared for

2031. them and provided for them in

  2032. that time.

2033. This was something that they

2034. were required to do as Old

  2035. Testament Jews.

2036. And so what did they do?

2037. We see no record of a debate on

2038. whether or not it should take

  2039. place.

2040. They just simply did it.

2041. One of the single greatest mark

2042. of Christian maturity is obedience.

2043. Not what you know, but what you do

  2044. with what you know.

2045. You understand that the Lord has

2046. commanded something and you simply

  2047. do it.

2048. Sometimes, with hesitancy, I teach

2049. you new things because when I teach

2050. you something new, you're held

2051. responsible for the thing that you

  2052. know.

2053. You now know something to be true

2054. and therefore you need to be

  2055. obedient to that truth.

2056. But yet, I love you and I want you

2057. to be like Christ, so we need to

  2058. keep pressing on together.

  2059. It's a great mark of Christian

2060. maturity that we are obedient to the

2061. work, the words of God.

2062. And notice the result of this,

  2063. verse 17.

2064. Look at the result of their

  2065. obedience.

2066. They're told to go away on this

  2067. first day, right?

2068. To go and to rejoice.

2069. Something they're intended to go do.

2070. And then the result of their

  2071. obedience, the record is,

2072. and there was great rejoicing.

2073. The people of God set the Word of

2074. God aside as the ultimate authority

  2075. in their lives.

2076. There will be great rejoicing.

2077. We saw that blessed are those who

2078. hear the Word of God and keep it.

2079. This word, blessed, that Jesus uses

2080. doesn't mean abounding in stuff,

  2081. right?

2082. It means full of a joy that bubbles

2083. up from inside of us.

2084. That's not affected by the circumstances

2085. outside of us, but that is something

  2086. that abides within us.

2087. This is the type of joy that comes.

  2088. Beloved, are we a joy-filled people?

2089. Blessed because we hear the Word of God

  2090. and we keep it?

2091. Have we established for ourselves

2092. the Word of God as the ultimate

  2093. authority in our lives?

  2094. Let's pray together.
