  1. All right, and as you're getting yourselves settled, let me add to your settling, take out your copy of God's Word, and turn to the Old Testament.

  2. Throughout this summer, most of you would be probably a more fair assessment of that, but I'm going to work to catch you up and show you where we've been so that you can really grasp hold of where we are now in the book.

  3. Just in brief, the nation of Israel was sent into captivity. This was a judgment brought on them by God, first with the Assyrians and then the Babylonians.

  4. This was something that was promised to them by the prophets, and because they didn't turn from their wicked ways and turn back to God, God brought this judgment upon them.

  5. And where we are now is post-exilic Israel. They've now been sent back.

  6. The world power has shifted from the Babylonians to the Persians, and they have given them permission to go back to their homeland.

  7. Some 90 years that starts the process before where we are now in Nehemiah.

  8. Nehemiah serves here. We see him serving as the governor as he was appointed by the king of Persia.

  9. Prior to that, he was serving as the cupbearer to the king, and it was Nehemiah that was brought this news that the wall had yet to be rebuilt around the city.

  10. And that grieved him because it was evidence that the people of God were not in a good place.

  11. The city, the capital, was still in ruins.

  12. And as such, that was an affront to the majesty of God.

  13. The state of God's people showed the world, the nations around them, how good God was, in fact, to them.

  14. And so here we see God returning his goodness to the people and using the man, Nehemiah, to accomplish that work.

  15. So we've been working through this. We've seen opposition to the work.

  16. He goes back. He gets this opposition. They work in spite of that.

  17. They complete the wall in 52 days.

  18. And we can see now that there's this revival beginning to happen, a returning to, a rejuvenation of the people of God,

  19. wanting to follow the goodness of God.

  20. We've come now to chapter 8.

  21. And this is where many would say that the real revival begins,

  22. although I would argue that it's been happening all along,

  23. but it certainly seems to kick into high gear at this point.

  24. There's a fervency that picks up in it as they come together for a feast called the Feast of Trumpets.

  25. Rosh Hashanah was taught in the Old Testament that they should do this thing.

  26. And it was a celebration meant to celebrate the coming Day of Atonement,

  27. which would happen nine days later.

  28. I think it's actually eight days later.

  29. I'd probably say eight days later on the ninth day of the month,

  30. which was the great day that the high priest went to the Holy of Holies

  31. and made sacrifice for the people of God.

  32. The whole thing meant to foreshadow the coming of Christ

  33. and the full and final sacrifice for the church.

  34. This is what they were coming together to celebrate.

  35. So all the Israelites were estimating 30,000 to 50,000 gather,

  36. and they asked Ezra, the priest-scribed, to come and open up the Word of God,

  37. and he reads from it for half of a day.

  38. And we see a structure set out where it's explained.

  39. This is where we've been spending our time the last two weeks.

  40. I intended to do it in one,

  41. but we talked about if revival is to come on God's people,

  42. there will be some evidences of that,

  43. and that they will be praying.

  44. We can see that Nehemiah is a book of prayer.

  45. Nehemiah was certainly a man of prayer,

  46. beseeching God to work on behalf of His people.

  47. And it will be continued in prayer.

  48. We also saw that the people of God will reestablish the Word of God

  49. as the ultimate authority in their lives.

  50. And that's what we see happening in chapter 8.

  51. They no longer make excuses.

  52. They no longer try to justify their way.

  53. But they say, God's way is the right way,

  54. and His Word is the authority over our living.

  55. The proper response to that is you see them mourn.

  56. They recognize how far removed their lives are

  57. from the holy standard that God has set up for them.

  58. They see this and they begin to mourn.

  59. You can see this beginning in verse 9 of chapter 8.

  60. But because of the special nature of this day,

  61. what this day was meant for in Jewish culture,

  62. they're encouraged to rejoice.

  63. And they do.

  64. We see verse 17.

  65. And there was very great rejoicing.

  66. So the Word of God now has been established as the ultimate authority.

  67. And we see now coming back into chapter 9,

  68. a new season of repentance.

  69. A new level of contrition on their part.

  70. Before we get there though,

  71. I want to say to you that the things I'm presenting to you

  72. are not formulaic.

  73. It's not that if we as the people of God

  74. will get these four things I'm presenting

  75. that we're going to observe here right,

  76. then we will be in a state of revival.

  77. Or God will bring revival to us,

  78. a special close visit of His Spirit.

  79. But certainly these are things that should be true

  80. of the people of God.

  81. Recall that Ezra has been here for 14 years,

  82. faithfully teaching the Word of God,

  83. calling the people back to His way.

  84. Revival wasn't happening for him, was it?

  85. But suddenly the Spirit comes,

  86. sovereignly works in the hearts of men,

  87. and things take off.

  88. They take on a new fervency.

  89. Dr. Martin Lloyd-Jones,

  90. a man I would commend to you,

  91. he died in 1981,

  92. but for almost 30 years

  93. he was a minister of Westminster Chapel in London.

  94. A wonderful man to read.

  95. Some of you may be familiar with his daughter,

  96. Sally Lloyd-Jones,

  97. who wrote the Jesus Storybook Bible.

  98. Said this of revival,

  99. you cannot revive something that has never had life.

  100. So revival by definition

  101. is first of all

  102. an enlivening and quickening and awakening

  103. of lethargic, sleepy church members.

  104. Suddenly the power of the Spirit comes upon them.

  105. They are humbled.

  106. They are convicted of sin.

  107. Then as a result of their quickening and enlivening,

  108. they begin to pray.

  109. New power comes into the preaching of the ministers,

  110. and the result of this is large numbers are converted.

  111. So a revival is not something we can put on a calendar.

  112. It's not a thing to schedule

  113. that belongs on a sign

  114. out in front of a building.

  115. It cannot be advertised in that way.

  116. A revival is a visiting of the Spirit of God

  117. in a new way,

  118. in a freshening way,

  119. in a way that causes us to return.

  120. As religion seems to be on the decline,

  121. I think that America is primed for this thing.

  122. If you look at the history of revivals,

  123. I believe we're primed for that to happen once again.

  124. So keep in mind,

  125. these are not formulaic,

  126. but if revival is God sent,

  127. God's people will be praying.

  128. They will reestablish the Word of God

  129. as the ultimate authority in their lives.

  130. And we can observe from chapter 9,

  131. the people of God will recognize

  132. their defiance of God

  133. and view His chastisement

  134. or His punishment as just.

  135. This is a particularly remarkable mark

  136. of revival.

  137. So, we see here,

  138. and I'm going to give you a quick summary

  139. at the beginning of chapter 9,

  140. on the 24th day of the month,

  141. so first day of the month,

  142. Feast of Trumpets,

  143. Ezra reads from the Law,

  144. 24th day of the month,

  145. they come back together

  146. and we can see that they've been driven

  147. into a deep repentance for their sins.

  148. There's three hours again

  149. of reading of the Word of God

  150. and three hours of confession

  151. and of worshiping.

  152. You can see in verse 1

  153. that they come together

  154. with fasting and sackcloth

  155. and with earth on their heads,

  156. which were all signs of this contrition.

  157. The sackcloth would have been

  158. cloth bags made of goat hair.

  159. It would have been very, very coarse.

  160. It was worn to remind them

  161. of how terrible their sin was.

  162. The earth on their heads

  163. was more than likely,

  164. typically done was ashes.

  165. So it represented the sacrifice

  166. that needed to be made

  167. on their part.

  168. So it's this visible outward,

  169. we are sinners.

  170. We have offended God.

  171. And they were publicly

  172. displaying this with one another.

  173. They had come to realize

  174. through reestablishing the Word of God

  175. as the authority in their lives,

  176. having it read and taught to them,

  177. we see it again here

  178. on the 24th day,

  179. being read to them,

  180. that God is infinitely holy,

  181. and so His law is infinitely holy.

  182. Therefore, any transgression,

  183. any transgression,

  184. from what in your mind

  185. might be the greatest transgression

  186. to what in your mind

  187. might be the very littlest transgression,

  188. right?

  189. For God, they are all

  190. an infinite offense.

  191. This ought to cause us

  192. to repent.

  193. This ought to cause us

  194. to mourn.

  195. Because true repentance recognizes,

  196. first and foremost,

  197. that sin is primarily

  198. vertical in its offense.

  199. Our good God,

  200. the Creator of heaven and earth,

  201. the One that lavishes on us,

  202. abounding love,

  203. is the One who's primarily offended

  204. by our sin.

  205. We certainly sin against others.

  206. There certainly is

  207. a horizontal process of that.

  208. And repentance ought to appropriately

  209. make reparations for those types of things.

  210. You've sinned against a brother,

  211. you should go to him

  212. and make those things right.

  213. But firstly,

  214. we should make ourselves right with God.

  215. True repentance can be seen,

  216. as Charles Spurgeon said,

  217. and I quote,

  218. when a person's repentance

  219. becomes as notorious

  220. as his sin.

  221. Everybody knows of your sin,

  222. everybody should know

  223. of your repentance.

  224. One person knows of your sin,

  225. that person should know

  226. of your repentance.

  227. Your sin was a private matter,

  228. there's no need for the repentance

  229. to go beyond.

  230. And here we see

  231. the nation of Israel

  232. publicly displaying

  233. to everyone,

  234. everyone should know

  235. how very, very, very

  236. offensive my sin is

  237. to God,

  238. clothing themselves

  239. and sackcloths,

  240. fasting,

  241. putting ash or earth

  242. on their heads.

  243. That's what they're putting

  244. on display.

  245. We are a wretched,

  246. sinful people.

  247. We have offended

  248. God.

  249. if you don't feel this

  250. for your sin,

  251. your view of God

  252. is too small.

  253. You need to have your vision

  254. expanded for God

  255. and His holiness.

  256. You need to see

  257. that He has a standard

  258. that we have all

  259. failed to live up to.

  260. Even as those

  261. who have been delivered

  262. by Christ,

  263. who have the Spirit of God

  264. working within us,

  265. the ability now

  266. to not transgress the law,

  267. we have failed

  268. at so many points.

  269. Now, properly,

  270. we see here,

  271. there's a traditional

  272. understanding

  273. in Reformed communities.

  274. We would all

  275. probably agree to this.

  276. It's an altogether

  277. biblical

  278. understanding

  279. that confessions of faith

  280. are necessarily

  281. preceded

  282. by deep contrition.

  283. That people need

  284. to recognize

  285. their transgression

  286. of the law.

  287. That ought to be

  288. a reality.

  289. I have sinned

  290. against the most holy God

  291. and this grieves me.

  292. My end is destruction.

  293. Because of my status,

  294. I am cut off from Him.

  295. I worship the devil,

  296. is what Jesus said.

  297. And therefore,

  298. we're broken by that,

  299. but then we're turned

  300. to joy

  301. because of the work

  302. of Christ.

  303. And we've seen this

  304. happen already

  305. back in chapter 8.

  306. We see the mourning

  307. and then they're instructed

  308. to don't mourn,

  309. be joyful.

  310. There's this

  311. day of atonement

  312. that's coming

  313. on your behalf.

  314. Be filled with joy

  315. as a result.

  316. But I think

  317. what we often neglect

  318. is that the Christian life

  319. is going to run

  320. in cycles

  321. of contrition

  322. and joy.

  323. Repentance

  324. and joy.

  325. That is the

  326. life

  327. of the believer.

  328. And here we see

  329. the evidence of that.

  330. Right?

  331. It's now 24 days later.

  332. They've been filled

  333. with joy.

  334. The record there

  335. in verse 17

  336. of chapter 8.

  337. And there was

  338. very great rejoicing.

  339. And then it doesn't say

  340. and then they went

  341. about their merry way

  342. and their life

  343. and did their

  344. American thing.

  345. Right?

  346. No.

  347. They continue to study

  348. the Word of God.

  349. They continue to have

  350. new revelation

  351. of how very sinful

  352. they were.

  353. And they were moved

  354. back into a cycle

  355. of repentance.

  356. So that cycle is

  357. a cycle of deeper

  358. repentance

  359. and increasing joy.

  360. Deeper repentance

  361. and increasing joy.

  362. And so on.

  363. Have you ever

  364. stopped to reflect

  365. on what Jesus said

  366. in Matthew 5.

  367. 4?

  368. Blessed are they

  369. that mourn.

  370. Some have understood

  371. this to mean

  372. those who mourn

  373. say over a lost person.

  374. Right?

  375. That we're so sad

  376. of the sin of the world.

  377. Or somebody who dies.

  378. They mourn.

  379. And this is a promise

  380. of God

  381. to come close

  382. and comfort

  383. in those times.

  384. In fact,

  385. it finishes

  386. for they shall be

  387. comforted.

  388. But we've come

  389. to understand

  390. that what Jesus

  391. is actually talking

  392. right here

  393. is the state

  394. of a person.

  395. Not a time

  396. somebody dies

  397. I mourn at that time.

  398. But who they

  399. actually are.

  400. So catch that.

  401. If you're a Christian

  402. your life is going

  403. to run

  404. in these cycles.

  405. What we mourn

  406. over

  407. is our sin.

  408. That we still

  409. carry around

  410. the baggage

  411. of our flesh.

  412. That our flesh

  413. has been spoiled

  414. by this.

  415. We have a new

  416. nature.

  417. That's what we're

  418. going to talk about

  419. with baptism.

  420. We can walk

  421. in that new nature

  422. and yet

  423. we still

  424. fall back

  425. into this sinful

  426. state as Paul

  427. laments in

  428. chapter 7 of

  429. Romans.

  430. Oh, I do

  431. the things I

  432. don't want to

  433. do.

  434. But what does

  435. he say here?

  436. That we are

  437. blessed.

  438. We are

  439. filled with

  440. an abiding

  441. joy even

  442. as we

  443. mourn.

  444. This is coming

  445. off the hip.

  446. I don't remember

  447. who said this.

  448. You've heard me

  449. and Wes quote

  450. this before,

  451. but a man

  452. who I owe

  453. credit to

  454. and I can't

  455. give it,

  456. once said

  457. that the gospel

  458. all at once

  459. both gladdens

  460. and abases

  461. the soul.

  462. That's what it

  463. ought to do

  464. to you.

  465. You ought to

  466. feel pretty

  467. crummy

  468. about your

  469. performance,

  470. but you ought

  471. to be overjoyed

  472. that God is

  473. working in you

  474. to bring about

  475. perfection.

  476. This should be

  477. the process

  478. that goes on

  479. in your life.

  480. I want people

  481. to leave

  482. on Sunday

  483. morning

  484. so overjoyed,

  485. but I want

  486. them to leave

  487. because they

  488. know that

  489. Christ is at

  490. work in them

  491. to accomplish

  492. his goodwill,

  493. not because I

  494. give you some

  495. kind of a pep

  496. talk and make

  497. you feel pretty

  498. good about what

  499. you accomplished

  500. this week.

  501. That the

  502. particular sin

  503. we addressed

  504. that week,

  505. you handled

  506. well,

  507. and so you

  508. can walk out

  509. and say,

  510. good,

  511. gold star

  512. for me.

  513. Gold star

  514. for Jesus,

  515. right?

  516. He's the one

  517. working in you

  518. to accomplish

  519. these things.

  520. Man, I say

  521. some weird stuff

  522. off the hip.

  523. So we're going

  524. to read.

  525. Here we go.

  526. So remember,

  527. if the Bible

  528. is God sent,

  529. God's people

  530. will recognize

  531. their defiance

  532. of God

  533. and view

  534. his chastisement

  535. as just.

  536. We're going

  537. to begin

  538. in verse 5b.

  539. So the gathering

  540. has happened,

  541. they've been

  542. reading,

  543. they've been

  544. confessing,

  545. and then we

  546. see a group

  547. of the Levites,

  548. we've got a

  549. couple of

  550. different groups

  551. of Levites

  552. here,

  553. say to them,

  554. stand up

  555. and bless

  556. the Lord

  557. your God

  558. from everlasting

  559. to everlasting.

  560. Blessed be

  561. your glorious

  562. name which

  563. is exalted

  564. above all

  565. blessing

  566. and praise.

  567. Then we

  568. launch into

  569. a prayer

  570. together.

  571. The

  572. Septuagint,

  573. the Greek

  574. translation

  575. of the Hebrew

  576. Old Testament

  577. adds at this

  578. point,

  579. and Ezra

  580. said.

  581. So,

  582. possibly,

  583. I don't know

  584. where that

  585. comes from,

  586. but possibly

  587. Ezra is

  588. leading this

  589. prayer.

  590. I don't

  591. think it

  592. really

  593. matters

  594. at this

  595. point

  596. though.

  597. So,

  598. beginning

  599. in verse

  600. 6,

  601. you are

  602. the Lord,

  603. you alone.

  604. You have

  605. made heaven,

  606. the heaven of

  607. heavens,

  608. with all

  609. their hosts,

  610. the earth

  611. and all

  612. that is on

  613. it,

  614. the seas

  615. and all

  616. that is

  617. in them,

  618. and you

  619. preserve

  620. all of

  621. them,

  622. and the

  623. host of

  624. heaven

  625. worships

  626. you.

  627. They

  628. praise

  629. God

  630. as the

  631. God

  632. of

  633. creation.

  634. Verse

  635. 7,

  636. you are

  637. the Lord,

  638. the God

  639. who chose

  640. Abram,

  641. and brought

  642. him out

  643. of Ur

  644. of the

  645. Chaldeans,

  646. and gave

  647. him the

  648. name

  649. Abraham.

  650. You

  651. found his

  652. heart

  653. faithful

  654. before you

  655. and made

  656. with him

  657. the covenant

  658. to give

  659. to his

  660. offspring the

  661. land of

  662. the Canaanite,

  663. the Hittite,

  664. the Amorite,

  665. the Perizzite,

  666. the Jebusite,

  667. and the

  668. Girgashite.

  669. And you

  670. have kept

  671. your promise,

  672. for you

  673. are righteous.

  674. They

  675. praise him

  676. as the

  677. God of

  678. Abraham.

  679. Verse

  680. 9,

  681. And you

  682. saw the

  683. affliction

  684. of our

  685. fathers

  686. in Egypt,

  687. and you

  688. heard their

  689. cry at the

  690. Red Sea,

  691. and performed

  692. signs and

  693. wonders against

  694. Pharaoh and

  695. all his

  696. servants,

  697. and all the

  698. people of

  699. his land,

  700. for you

  701. knew that

  702. they acted

  703. arrogantly

  704. against our

  705. fathers.

  706. And you

  707. made a

  708. name for

  709. yourself,

  710. as it is

  711. to this

  712. day.

  713. And you

  714. divided the

  715. sea before

  716. them,

  717. so they

  718. went through

  719. the midst

  720. of the

  721. sea on

  722. dry land,

  723. and you

  724. cast their

  725. pursuers

  726. into the

  727. depths as

  728. a stone

  729. into mighty

  730. waters.

  731. By a

  732. pillar of

  733. cloud you

  734. led them

  735. in the

  736. day,

  737. and by

  738. a pillar

  739. of fire

  740. in the

  741. night,

  742. to light

  743. for them

  744. the way

  745. in which

  746. they should

  747. go.

  748. You

  749. came down

  750. on Mount

  751. Sinai,

  752. and spoke

  753. with them

  754. from heaven,

  755. and gave

  756. them right

  757. rules and

  758. true laws,

  759. good statutes

  760. and commandments.

  761. And you

  762. made known

  763. to them

  764. your holy

  765. Sabbath,

  766. and commanded

  767. them commandments

  768. and statutes

  769. and a law

  770. by Moses

  771. your servant.

  772. You gave

  773. them bread

  774. from heaven

  775. for their

  776. hunger,

  777. and brought

  778. water for

  779. them out

  780. of the

  781. rocks for

  782. their thirst.

  783. And you

  784. told them

  785. to go in

  786. to possess

  787. the land

  788. you had

  789. sworn to

  790. give them.

  791. They praised

  792. him for

  793. being the

  794. God of

  795. the Exodus,

  796. the people

  797. of Israel.

  798. Verse 16,

  799. But they

  800. and our

  801. fathers

  802. acted

  803. presumptuously

  804. and stiffened

  805. their neck

  806. and did not

  807. obey your

  808. commandments.

  809. They refused

  810. to obey,

  811. were not

  812. mindful of

  813. the wonders

  814. that you

  815. performed

  816. among them,

  817. but they

  818. stiffened

  819. their neck

  820. and appointed

  821. a leader

  822. to return

  823. to their

  824. slavery

  825. in Egypt.

  826. But you

  827. are a

  828. God

  829. ready to

  830. forgive,

  831. gracious

  832. and merciful,

  833. slow to

  834. anger,

  835. and abounding

  836. in steadfast

  837. love,

  838. and did

  839. not forsake

  840. them.

  841. Even when

  842. they had

  843. made for

  844. themselves a

  845. golden calf

  846. and said,

  847. This is

  848. your God

  849. who brought

  850. you up

  851. out of

  852. Egypt,

  853. and had

  854. committed

  855. great

  856. blasphemies,

  857. you and

  858. your great

  859. mercies did

  860. not forsake

  861. them in

  862. the wilderness.

  863. The pillar

  864. of cloud

  865. to lead

  866. them in

  867. the way

  868. did not

  869. depart

  870. from them

  871. by day,

  872. nor the

  873. pillar

  874. of fire

  875. by night

  876. to light

  877. for them

  878. the way

  879. by which

  880. they should

  881. go.

  882. You gave

  883. your good

  884. spirit to

  885. instruct

  886. them,

  887. and did

  888. not withhold

  889. your manna

  890. from their

  891. mouth,

  892. and gave

  893. them water

  894. for their

  895. thirst.

  896. Forty

  897. years you

  898. sustained

  899. them in

  900. the wilderness,

  901. and they

  902. lacked

  903. nothing.

  904. Their

  905. clothes did

  906. not wear

  907. out,

  908. and their

  909. feet did

  910. not swell.

  911. And you

  912. gave them

  913. kingdoms

  914. and peoples,

  915. and allotted

  916. to them

  917. every corner.

  918. So they

  919. took possession

  920. of the land

  921. of Sihon,

  922. king of

  923. Heshbon,

  924. and the land

  925. of Og,

  926. king of

  927. Bashan.

  928. You

  929. multiplied

  930. their

  931. children

  932. as the

  933. stars of

  934. heaven,

  935. and you

  936. brought

  937. them into

  938. the land

  939. that you

  940. had told

  941. their

  942. fathers

  943. to enter

  944. and possess.

  945. So the

  946. descendants

  947. went in

  948. and possessed

  949. the land,

  950. and you

  951. subdued before

  952. them the

  953. inhabitants

  954. of the

  955. land,

  956. the

  957. Canaanites,

  958. and gave

  959. them into

  960. their hand

  961. with their

  962. kings and

  963. the people

  964. of the

  965. land,

  966. that they

  967. might do

  968. with them

  969. as they

  970. would.

  971. And they

  972. captured

  973. fortified

  974. cities and

  975. a rich

  976. land and

  977. took possession

  978. of houses

  979. full of

  980. all good

  981. things,

  982. cisterns

  983. already

  984. hewn,

  985. vineyards,

  986. olive orchards,

  987. and fruit

  988. trees in

  989. abundance.

  990. So they

  991. ate and

  992. were filled

  993. and became

  994. fat and

  995. delighted

  996. themselves in

  997. your great

  998. goodness.

  999. Praise

  1000. him for

  1001. sustaining

  1002. them,

  1003. the God

  1004. of the

  1005. sustenance

  1006. in the

  1007. wilderness,

  1008. and the

  1009. conquering

  1010. of

  1011. Canaan.

  1012. Verse 26,

  1013. Nevertheless,

  1014. they were

  1015. disobedient,

  1016. and rebelled

  1017. against you,

  1018. and cast

  1019. your law

  1020. behind their

  1021. back,

  1022. and killed

  1023. your prophets,

  1024. who had

  1025. warned them

  1026. in order to

  1027. turn them

  1028. back to you,

  1029. and they

  1030. committed

  1031. great

  1032. blasphemies.

  1033. Therefore

  1034. you gave

  1035. them into

  1036. the hand

  1037. of their

  1038. enemies,

  1039. who made

  1040. them suffer.

  1041. And in

  1042. the time

  1043. of their

  1044. sufferings

  1045. they cried

  1046. out to

  1047. you,

  1048. and you

  1049. heard them

  1050. from

  1051. heaven.

  1052. And

  1053. according

  1054. to your

  1055. great

  1056. mercies

  1057. you gave

  1058. them

  1059. saviors

  1060. who

  1061. saved

  1062. them from

  1063. the hand

  1064. of their

  1065. enemies.

  1066. But after

  1067. they had

  1068. rest,

  1069. they did

  1070. evil again

  1071. before you,

  1072. and you

  1073. abandoned

  1074. them to

  1075. the hand

  1076. of their

  1077. enemies,

  1078. so that

  1079. they had

  1080. dominion

  1081. over them.

  1082. Yet when

  1083. they turned

  1084. and cried

  1085. to you,

  1086. you heard

  1087. from heaven,

  1088. and many

  1089. times you

  1090. delivered

  1091. them according

  1092. to your

  1093. mercies.

  1094. And you

  1095. warned

  1096. them in

  1097. order to

  1098. turn back

  1099. to your

  1100. law.

  1101. Yet they

  1102. acted

  1103. presumptuously

  1104. and did

  1105. not obey

  1106. your

  1107. commandments,

  1108. but sinned

  1109. against

  1110. your

  1111. rules,

  1112. which if

  1113. a person

  1114. does

  1115. them,

  1116. he shall

  1117. !

  1118. Praise

  1119. him as

  1120. the God

  1121. of the

  1122. judges

  1123. and of

  1124. the

  1125. prophets.

  1126. Now,

  1127. catch at

  1128. this point,

  1129. they're getting

  1130. fairly caught

  1131. up to speed.

  1132. Ezra,

  1133. if he's the

  1134. one praying

  1135. at this

  1136. point,

  1137. has covered

  1138. the Old

  1139. Testament

  1140. narrative.

  1141. Praise

  1142. God all

  1143. along the

  1144. way for

  1145. the great

  1146. things he

  1147. has done

  1148. for the

  1149. people of

  1150. Israel.

  1151. And I

  1152. want you

  1153. to hear

  1154. this

  1155. carefully.

  1156. This is

  1157. not a

  1158. history

  1159. that's

  1160. removed

  1161. for us.

  1162. This is

  1163. God's

  1164. special

  1165. people,

  1166. his called

  1167. ones,

  1168. which we

  1169. are now

  1170. that,

  1171. the church.

  1172. The gospel

  1173. has advanced

  1174. that out

  1175. beyond the

  1176. borders of

  1177. a nation,

  1178. of a

  1179. bloodline.

  1180. And this

  1181. now belongs

  1182. to us.

  1183. This is

  1184. our history.

  1185. These are

  1186. our people

  1187. that were

  1188. let out,

  1189. that acted

  1190. wickedly,

  1191. that God

  1192. was good

  1193. to just

  1194. the same.

  1195. The promises

  1196. here and

  1197. the praises

  1198. are ours

  1199. as well.

  1200. Now here's

  1201. the request

  1202. beginning in

  1203. verse 32.

  1204. Now

  1205. therefore,

  1206. our God,

  1207. the great,

  1208. the mighty,

  1209. and the

  1210. awesome God

  1211. who keeps

  1212. covenant and

  1213. steadfast love,

  1214. let not all

  1215. the hardship

  1216. seem little to

  1217. you that has

  1218. come upon us,

  1219. upon our

  1220. kings,

  1221. our princes,

  1222. our priests,

  1223. our prophets,

  1224. our fathers,

  1225. and all your

  1226. people since

  1227. the time of the

  1228. kings of Assyria

  1229. until this

  1230. day.

  1231. Yet you

  1232. have been

  1233. righteous in

  1234. all that

  1235. has come

  1236. upon us,

  1237. for you

  1238. have dealt

  1239. faithfully,

  1240. and we

  1241. have acted

  1242. wickedly.

  1243. Our kings,

  1244. our princes,

  1245. our priests,

  1246. and our fathers

  1247. have not kept

  1248. your law or

  1249. paid attention

  1250. to your

  1251. commandments and

  1252. your warnings

  1253. that you gave

  1254. them.

  1255. Even in

  1256. their own

  1257. kingdom and

  1258. amid your

  1259. great goodness

  1260. that you

  1261. gave them,

  1262. and in the

  1263. large and

  1264. rich land

  1265. that you

  1266. set before

  1267. them,

  1268. they did

  1269. not serve

  1270. you or

  1271. turn from

  1272. their wicked

  1273. works.

  1274. Behold,

  1275. we are

  1276. slaves this

  1277. day in

  1278. the land that

  1279. you gave to

  1280. our fathers

  1281. to enjoy

  1282. its fruit

  1283. and its

  1284. good gifts.

  1285. Behold,

  1286. we are

  1287. slaves,

  1288. and its

  1289. rich yield

  1290. goes to

  1291. the kings

  1292. who you

  1293. have set

  1294. over us

  1295. because of

  1296. our sins.

  1297. They rule

  1298. over our

  1299. bodies and

  1300. over our

  1301. livestock as

  1302. they please,

  1303. and we are

  1304. in great

  1305. distress.

  1306. Because of

  1307. all this,

  1308. we make a

  1309. firm covenant

  1310. in writing.

  1311. On the

  1312. sealed document

  1313. are the

  1314. names of

  1315. our princes,

  1316. our Levites,

  1317. and our

  1318. priests.

  1319. So see

  1320. the recognition

  1321. here on

  1322. their part.

  1323. They see

  1324. that they

  1325. have defied

  1326. God.

  1327. They have

  1328. stated that

  1329. now over

  1330. and over

  1331. and over

  1332. and over

  1333. again.

  1334. But they

  1335. also see

  1336. that God

  1337. is right

  1338. and just

  1339. and good.

  1340. Notice the

  1341. praises that

  1342. they give

  1343. Him all

  1344. throughout

  1345. this.

  1346. First in

  1347. verse 6,

  1348. you are

  1349. righteous.

  1350. Then in

  1351. verse 6,

  1352. you are

  1353. the Lord,

  1354. you alone.

  1355. Verse 8,

  1356. you are

  1357. righteous.

  1358. Verse 17,

  1359. but you are

  1360. a God

  1361. ready to

  1362. forgive,

  1363. gracious,

  1364. merciful,

  1365. slow to

  1366. anger,

  1367. abounding

  1368. in steadfast

  1369. love.

  1370. Verse 25,

  1371. they praise

  1372. Him for

  1373. His great

  1374. goodness.

  1375. Verse 32,

  1376. you are

  1377. God,

  1378. our God,

  1379. the great,

  1380. the mighty,

  1381. the awesome

  1382. God who

  1383. keeps covenant

  1384. and steadfast

  1385. love.

  1386. And I

  1387. think kind

  1388. of the

  1389. hinging

  1390. verse for

  1391. us here

  1392. that wraps

  1393. this up

  1394. for us

  1395. in such

  1396. a nice

  1397. little neat

  1398. package

  1399. is verse

  1400. 33.

  1401. Yet you

  1402. have been

  1403. righteous

  1404. in all

  1405. that has

  1406. come upon

  1407. us,

  1408. for you

  1409. have dealt

  1410. faithfully

  1411. and we

  1412. have acted

  1413. wickedly.

  1414. In spite

  1415. of all

  1416. these good

  1417. things that

  1418. you have

  1419. done for

  1420. us,

  1421. look at

  1422. this great

  1423. history

  1424. that we

  1425. have as

  1426. the people

  1427. of God.

  1428. We look

  1429. back across

  1430. it and

  1431. we see

  1432. your

  1433. consistent

  1434. faithfulness.

  1435. You're

  1436. never

  1437. changing.

  1438. Your

  1439. loving

  1440. kindness

  1441. is

  1442. abounding

  1443. to us.

  1444. You just

  1445. keep on

  1446. being good

  1447. and we

  1448. keep on

  1449. rebelling

  1450. against you.

  1451. And we're

  1452. so quick

  1453. in our

  1454. arrogance

  1455. to look

  1456. at them

  1457. and say,

  1458. those foolish

  1459. Israelites,

  1460. what was

  1461. their problem?

  1462. I mean,

  1463. he records

  1464. here the

  1465. work of the

  1466. golden calf.

  1467. They were

  1468. not very

  1469. far out

  1470. of Egypt

  1471. having been

  1472. delivered.

  1473. An ocean

  1474. split in

  1475. front of

  1476. them.

  1477. They walked

  1478. through it.

  1479. It crashed

  1480. behind them

  1481. and destroyed

  1482. an army.

  1483. They were

  1484. being led

  1485. by a

  1486. pillar of

  1487. fire and

  1488. a pillar

  1489. of cloud

  1490. which existed

  1491. when they

  1492. cast the

  1493. golden calf.

  1494. Doesn't

  1495. that not

  1496. just in

  1497. some way

  1498. seem insane

  1499. to you

  1500. that they

  1501. were doing

  1502. this thing?

  1503. That they

  1504. were saying

  1505. this image

  1506. that we

  1507. created,

  1508. this is

  1509. what led

  1510. us out

  1511. of Egypt.

  1512. But we

  1513. are the

  1514. same way.

  1515. We are

  1516. equally

  1517. foolish

  1518. because we

  1519. have this

  1520. history and

  1521. we have

  1522. our own.

  1523. Study church

  1524. history.

  1525. Look at the

  1526. faithfulness of

  1527. God.

  1528. The very

  1529. fact that you

  1530. have sitting

  1531. in your lap

  1532. or opened

  1533. up on some

  1534. device the

  1535. words of

  1536. God translated

  1537. in your

  1538. language is

  1539. a mighty

  1540. work of

  1541. God.

  1542. This thing

  1543. has been

  1544. tried to

  1545. be killed

  1546. throughout

  1547. the ages

  1548. and yet

  1549. it perseveres.

  1550. Men have

  1551. died bringing

  1552. this book

  1553. to us

  1554. this morning.

  1555. We have

  1556. such a

  1557. rich,

  1558. rich history.

  1559. How about

  1560. your own

  1561. life?

  1562. If you're

  1563. truly a

  1564. believer,

  1565. you've

  1566. experienced

  1567. repentance.

  1568. You've

  1569. experienced

  1570. how very,

  1571. very ugly

  1572. your sin

  1573. is.

  1574. You've

  1575. felt the

  1576. depth of

  1577. that.

  1578. You've

  1579. seen God

  1580. in His

  1581. holiness

  1582. and you

  1583. know

  1584. there was

  1585. no way

  1586. you could

  1587. measure up

  1588. to that.

  1589. And yet

  1590. in Christ

  1591. you've

  1592. been

  1593. delivered.

  1594. You've

  1595. experienced

  1596. the kind

  1597. of joy

  1598. that comes

  1599. from that.

  1600. You've

  1601. been

  1602. !

  1603. You've

  1604. been

  1605. delivered.

  1606. Eternal

  1607. end was

  1608. destruction

  1609. and yet

  1610. someone

  1611. paid the

  1612. price fully

  1613. for you.

  1614. You just

  1615. believe in

  1616. that.

  1617. You place

  1618. faith in

  1619. them and

  1620. you've

  1621. been

  1622. delivered.

  1623. You've

  1624. been ushered

  1625. back into

  1626. the kingdom.

  1627. You are

  1628. now a

  1629. son of

  1630. the living

  1631. God.

  1632. Why does

  1633. that history

  1634. not come

  1635. into our

  1636. minds?

  1637. Right?

  1638. Look at

  1639. the amazing

  1640. things God

  1641. has done

  1642. on our

  1643. behalf and

  1644. yet here

  1645. we are

  1646. just like

  1647. the

  1648. Israelites

  1649. turning

  1650. back away

  1651. back to

  1652. our

  1653. sin.

  1654. Look at

  1655. these

  1656. important

  1657. words.

  1658. Verse 16

  1659. and 17.

  1660. There are

  1661. two rather

  1662. incredible

  1663. buts in

  1664. the text

  1665. and I

  1666. say it

  1667. that way

  1668. on purpose

  1669. because I

  1670. want you

  1671. to remember

  1672. it.

  1673. There's

  1674. some

  1675. incredible

  1676. buts

  1677. in this

  1678. text.

  1679. Two of

  1680. them.

  1681. Verse 16

  1682. but they

  1683. and then

  1684. verse 17

  1685. but you.

  1686. Those are

  1687. precious

  1688. precious

  1689. words.

  1690. God has

  1691. been good

  1692. to us

  1693. but we

  1694. but then

  1695. right back

  1696. we can

  1697. say but

  1698. you.

  1699. God is

  1700. God.

  1701. We don't

  1702. affect who

  1703. he is and

  1704. how he

  1705. operates.

  1706. He is

  1707. self-existent.

  1708. His very

  1709. title he gave

  1710. to Moses

  1711. to tell

  1712. the people

  1713. tell them

  1714. I am

  1715. has sent

  1716. you.

  1717. The very

  1718. thought of

  1719. that word

  1720. is that

  1721. he is

  1722. self-sufficient.

  1723. You've

  1724. heard me say

  1725. before that

  1726. everything plugs

  1727. into him

  1728. but he

  1729. plugs into

  1730. nothing.

  1731. This is

  1732. the but

  1733. you that

  1734. we get to

  1735. bank on

  1736. when the

  1737. but we

  1738. is playing

  1739. out in

  1740. our lives.

  1741. Two

  1742. incredible

  1743. buts.

  1744. We continue

  1745. to sin

  1746. against our

  1747. God even

  1748. though he's

  1749. shown us

  1750. so much

  1751. goodness

  1752. but he

  1753. continues to

  1754. be good

  1755. and faithful

  1756. to us.

  1757. This should

  1758. move us

  1759. to repentance

  1760. beloved.

  1761. This should

  1762. move us

  1763. to hate

  1764. our sin

  1765. and to

  1766. love him

  1767. more.

  1768. To not

  1769. be

  1770. complacent.

  1771. To not

  1772. make excuses

  1773. but to

  1774. see that

  1775. the word

  1776. of God

  1777. is the

  1778. authority.

  1779. It is

  1780. the authority

  1781. whether you

  1782. recognize it

  1783. or not.

  1784. But to

  1785. begin to

  1786. recognize it

  1787. in your

  1788. life.

  1789. And begin

  1790. to arrange

  1791. your life

  1792. accordingly.

  1793. because you

  1794. know your

  1795. God loves

  1796. you and

  1797. your

  1798. appropriate

  1799. response

  1800. is a

  1801. love for

  1802. him in

  1803. keeping

  1804. his

  1805. commands.

  1806. The

  1807. American

  1808. church

  1809. and ours

  1810. has much

  1811. room

  1812. for repentance.

  1813. We were

  1814. putting together

  1815. a preaching

  1816. schedule for

  1817. Thursday night

  1818. and this

  1819. year

  1820. October 31st

  1821. falls on a

  1822. Thursday night

  1823. and so

  1824. most of

  1825. you

  1826. immediately

  1827. think of

  1828. Halloween

  1829. but it's

  1830. also

  1831. Reformation

  1832. Day.

  1833. It's the

  1834. day that

  1835. Martin Luther

  1836. nailed the

  1837. 95 theses

  1838. on the door

  1839. of the

  1840. Wittenberg

  1841. church.

  1842. And I

  1843. was just

  1844. thinking about

  1845. that like

  1846. how we

  1847. probably should

  1848. do something

  1849. that night

  1850. for that.

  1851. And the

  1852. thought that

  1853. came into

  1854. my head

  1855. was that I

  1856. probably

  1857. needed to

  1858. write my

  1859. own

  1860. thesis

  1861. and put

  1862. it on

  1863. our

  1864. door.

  1865. There

  1866. wasn't

  1867. another

  1868. church

  1869. that needs

  1870. what I

  1871. have to

  1872. say about

  1873. it but

  1874. there's

  1875. plenty of

  1876. work to

  1877. be done

  1878. here

  1879. amongst

  1880. we do

  1881. some things

  1882. really well.

  1883. I think we

  1884. have some

  1885. things right.

  1886. We try to

  1887. be faithful

  1888. in the way

  1889. we arrange

  1890. church.

  1891. Some of

  1892. you will

  1893. say this

  1894. is a

  1895. strange

  1896. church.

  1897. It's a

  1898. lot

  1899. different.

  1900. We

  1901. just try

  1902. to line

  1903. up with

  1904. what we

  1905. see the

  1906. Word of

  1907. God

  1908. telling us

  1909. we ought

  1910. to do.

  1911. Good

  1912. for us.

  1913. Right?

  1914. But boy

  1915. do we

  1916. fail at

  1917. so many

  1918. points as

  1919. a congregation.

  1920. This work

  1921. of revival,

  1922. this type

  1923. of repentance,

  1924. this level,

  1925. this depth

  1926. of contrition,

  1927. is going

  1928. to show

  1929. up when

  1930. God sends

  1931. it amongst

  1932. us.

  1933. And my

  1934. question is

  1935. do we

  1936. long for

  1937. that type

  1938. of thing?

  1939. Do we

  1940. want our

  1941. sin exposed?

  1942. If we

  1943. could put it

  1944. on the

  1945. screen,

  1946. use the

  1947. technology,

  1948. would you

  1949. want it

  1950. exposed up

  1951. on the

  1952. screen?

  1953. Everything

  1954. that you

  1955. thought,

  1956. every emotion

  1957. that you've

  1958. had,

  1959. played,

  1960. for all

  1961. of us

  1962. to see?

  1963. It's what

  1964. the Israelites

  1965. were doing.

  1966. They were

  1967. putting on

  1968. sackcloth.

  1969. They were

  1970. fasting,

  1971. ashes on

  1972. their head.

  1973. They knew

  1974. that the

  1975. people of

  1976. God needed

  1977. to see,

  1978. I'm a

  1979. sinner too.

  1980. I am in

  1981. desperate need

  1982. of God's

  1983. grace in

  1984. my life.

  1985. Would we

  1986. be willing

  1987. for this

  1988. type of

  1989. thing to

  1990. happen?

  1991. Jay turned

  1992. me on to a

  1993. book this

  1994. week by

  1995. Jonathan Edwards

  1996. called The

  1997. Surprising

  1998. Work of

  1999. God.

  2000. I had

  2001. never heard

  2002. of it

  2003. until Jay

  2004. showed it

  2005. to me.

  2006. Sadly,

  2007. I'm going

  2008. to give

  2009. his copy

  2010. back and

  2011. I'm going

  2012. to buy

  2013. my own

  2014. soon to

  2015. continue

  2016. reading it.

  2017. Listen to

  2018. what he

  2019. said as

  2020. he observed

  2021. what was

  2022. going on

  2023. during the

  2024. Great

  2025. Awakening,

  2026. which he

  2027. was one

  2028. of the

  2029. major

  2030. leaders in,

  2031. a catalyst

  2032. for this

  2033. near work

  2034. of God.

  2035. He's

  2036. speaking of

  2037. converts.

  2038. He says,

  2039. there's a

  2040. great deal

  2041. of difference

  2042. in the

  2043. distinctness

  2044. of these

  2045. awakenings.

  2046. Genuine

  2047. God-sent

  2048. revival

  2049. awakenings.

  2050. Some people

  2051. who have

  2052. not had

  2053. such a

  2054. clear sight

  2055. of God's

  2056. justice

  2057. in their

  2058. condemnation

  2059. still mention

  2060. things that

  2061. plainly imply

  2062. it.

  2063. They develop

  2064. disposition to

  2065. acknowledge that

  2066. God is just

  2067. and righteous

  2068. in declaring

  2069. that he will

  2070. inflict punishment

  2071. on those

  2072. who sin.

  2073. They know

  2074. that they are

  2075. undeserving of

  2076. his comforts.

  2077. Many times

  2078. they did not

  2079. have such a

  2080. clear sight

  2081. of it

  2082. at the

  2083. beginning.

  2084. They have

  2085. very clear

  2086. discoveries

  2087. of their

  2088. unworthiness

  2089. soon after

  2090. their conviction

  2091. along with

  2092. being made

  2093. humble in

  2094. the dust

  2095. before God.

  2096. So let me

  2097. just sum up

  2098. for you

  2099. what he's

  2100. saying.

  2101. As a man

  2102. who observed

  2103. a genuine

  2104. God-sent

  2105. revival,

  2106. people who

  2107. were converting

  2108. to Christ

  2109. during this

  2110. time reacted

  2111. in this way.

  2112. They saw

  2113. the depth

  2114. of their sin

  2115. and they also

  2116. saw that God

  2117. was just

  2118. and right

  2119. and holy.

  2120. Just like

  2121. the people

  2122. in Nehemiah's

  2123. day recognized

  2124. that it was

  2125. proper that

  2126. God should

  2127. punish them.

  2128. It was the

  2129. right thing

  2130. for him to

  2131. do because

  2132. their sin

  2133. was great

  2134. and grievous.

  2135. This is the

  2136. thing that we

  2137. ought to also

  2138. do.

  2139. Many of us

  2140. grew up in

  2141. good Christian

  2142. homes and

  2143. were moral

  2144. and have

  2145. yet to really

  2146. see fully

  2147. unfolded before

  2148. us the depth

  2149. of our sin.

  2150. We really

  2151. act in a lot

  2152. of ways as

  2153. if God

  2154. owes us

  2155. something.

  2156. I've lived

  2157. a good

  2158. life.

  2159. I've done

  2160. my thing.

  2161. I've gone

  2162. to church.

  2163. I've done

  2164. on the

  2165. mission trips.

  2166. God owes

  2167. me.

  2168. God owes

  2169. you nothing.

  2170. You're a

  2171. sinner.

  2172. You're an

  2173. enemy of

  2174. his.

  2175. Cut off.

  2176. He doesn't

  2177. owe you

  2178. anything.

  2179. He freely

  2180. gives you

  2181. the gift

  2182. of grace

  2183. because he

  2184. loves you.

  2185. This is

  2186. that attitude

  2187. that should

  2188. be set

  2189. amongst

  2190. us.

  2191. Recognizing

  2192. the depth

  2193. of our

  2194. sin,

  2195. it's an

  2196. offense to

  2197. this holy

  2198. God.

  2199. Why would

  2200. he ever

  2201. forgive me?

  2202. Why would

  2203. he ever

  2204. do anything

  2205. good for

  2206. me?

  2207. Look at

  2208. what I

  2209. have done

  2210. against

  2211. him.

  2212. And that's

  2213. when we

  2214. turn to

  2215. Christ.

  2216. We see

  2217. that God

  2218. poured out

  2219. his wrath

  2220. for our

  2221. sin on

  2222. Christ.

  2223. The punishment

  2224. has been

  2225. played and

  2226. we place

  2227. our faith

  2228. in him.

  2229. We recognize

  2230. that the

  2231. person,

  2232. the work

  2233. of Christ

  2234. is the

  2235. way in

  2236. which we

  2237. get back

  2238. in right

  2239. standing

  2240. with God.

  2241. Our

  2242. righteousness

  2243. is found

  2244. in Christ.

  2245. This is a

  2246. supernatural

  2247. work of

  2248. the Spirit

  2249. of God.

  2250. When the

  2251. Spirit of

  2252. God draws

  2253. the Word

  2254. of God,

  2255. we see this

  2256. happening here,

  2257. draws the

  2258. Word of

  2259. God from

  2260. its

  2261. scabbard and

  2262. begins to

  2263. apply it

  2264. to the

  2265. hearts of

  2266. men.

  2267. Slices it,

  2268. dices it,

  2269. julian's fries,

  2270. gets in there

  2271. and starts

  2272. working in

  2273. our hearts.

  2274. This is what

  2275. happens.

  2276. This is the

  2277. evidence that

  2278. will take

  2279. place.

  2280. So we can

  2281. say,

  2282. yeah,

  2283. we're repentant

  2284. people.

  2285. Sure,

  2286. yeah,

  2287. we get the

  2288. depth of

  2289. sin until

  2290. we begin to

  2291. see this

  2292. kind of

  2293. repentance

  2294. happen.

  2295. The kind

  2296. that Spurgeon

  2297. spoke of.

  2298. The repentance

  2299. is as

  2300. notorious as

  2301. the sin

  2302. itself.

  2303. It's not

  2304. the work

  2305. that's taking

  2306. place in our

  2307. lives.

  2308. I'm going

  2309. to show you

  2310. two New

  2311. Testament

  2312. examples of

  2313. genuine

  2314. God

  2315. wrought

  2316. repentance.

  2317. The first

  2318. being the

  2319. prodigal son.

  2320. Don't turn

  2321. here.

  2322. I'll have you

  2323. turn to the

  2324. next one.

  2325. The first

  2326. being the

  2327. prodigal son,

  2328. Luke 15

  2329. 21.

  2330. This is the

  2331. parable that

  2332. Jesus told.

  2333. You see the

  2334. return of the

  2335. son.

  2336. He's gone.

  2337. He said to

  2338. his dad,

  2339. I wish you

  2340. were dead.

  2341. Give me my

  2342. share of the

  2343. inheritance.

  2344. He's gone.

  2345. He's lived

  2346. lavishly.

  2347. He's wasted

  2348. it all.

  2349. He's gone and

  2350. lived as one

  2351. contrary to the

  2352. way his father

  2353. would have him

  2354. live.

  2355. But he

  2356. returns to

  2357. him and he

  2358. says,

  2359. Father, I

  2360. be called

  2361. your son.

  2362. I get that.

  2363. I'm not

  2364. coming to you

  2365. because I

  2366. expect anything

  2367. of you

  2368. whatsoever.

  2369. The second

  2370. one, 2

    2 Corinthians 7 chapter mention

  2371. Corinthians

  2372. chapter 7.

  2373. Please do

  2374. turn here

  2375. with me.

  2376. So I

  2377. hope you

  2378. get that

  2379. 2 Corinthians

  2380. is the

  2381. follow-up

  2382. letter to

  2383. 1 Corinthians.

  2384. The second

  2385. letter that

  2386. Paul wrote

  2387. to the

  2388. Corinthian

  2389. church.

  2390. He was

  2391. pretty hard

  2392. on the

  2393. Corinthian

  2394. church in

  2395. his first

  2396. letter.

  2397. He was

  2398. setting

  2399. straight a

  2400. lot of

  2401. things that

  2402. needed to

  2403. be set

  2404. straight.

  2405. Listen to

  2406. what he

  2407. says here

  2408. beginning in

  2409. verse 8.

  2410. For even

  2411. if I made

  2412. you grieve

  2413. with my

  2414. letter,

  2415. I do

  2416. not

  2417. regret it

  2418. though I

  2419. did regret

  2420. it for I

  2421. see that the

  2422. letter grieved

  2423. you though only

  2424. for a little

  2425. while.

  2426. So catch

  2427. that.

  2428. He says

  2429. even if I

  2430. made you

  2431. grieve with

  2432. my letter,

  2433. I don't

  2434. regret it

  2435. now even

  2436. though I

  2437. did because

  2438. it grieved

  2439. you.

  2440. That saddened

  2441. him, these

  2442. people that

  2443. he loved.

  2444. But he

  2445. recognized it

  2446. only was for

  2447. a little

  2448. while.

  2449. Verse 9.

  2450. As it

  2451. is, I

  2452. rejoice not

  2453. because you

  2454. were grieved

  2455. but because

  2456. you were

  2457. grieved into

  2458. repenting.

  2459. For you

  2460. felt a

  2461. godly

  2462. grief.

  2463. So that

  2464. you suffered

  2465. no loss

  2466. through us.

  2467. For godly

  2468. grief produces

  2469. a repentance

  2470. that leads

  2471. to salvation

  2472. without regret

  2473. whereas worldly

  2474. grief produces

  2475. death.

  2476. For see what

  2477. earnestness this

  2478. godly grief has

  2479. produced to you

  2480. but also what

  2481. eagerness to

  2482. clear yourselves,

  2483. what indignation,

  2484. what fear,

  2485. what longing,

  2486. what zeal,

  2487. what punishment.

  2488. He's

  2489. overjoyed.

  2490. He's

  2491. happy that

  2492. it brought

  2493. about grief

  2494. because the

  2495. grief led

  2496. to repentance.

  2497. It's the same

  2498. picture of what's

  2499. happening here

  2500. to the Israelites

  2501. in the book of

  2502. Nehemiah.

  2503. Broken,

  2504. weeping over

  2505. their sin.

  2506. Visibly displaying

  2507. how distraught

  2508. they are over

  2509. this and then

  2510. calling on God

  2511. for the

  2512. deliverance of

  2513. their souls.

  2514. praise God

  2515. that even when

  2516. the but they

  2517. and the but we

  2518. exists,

  2519. the but you

  2520. is quick to

  2521. come along

  2522. behind it.

  2523. Join me in

  2524. prayer.
