  1. Today we're going to look at John the Baptist, or as I prefer to call him John the Baptizer.

  2. ! Let's read together the first eight verses. Mark chapter 1.

    Mark 1 chapter mention

  3. The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

  4. As it is written in Isaiah the prophet,

  5. Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way.

  6. The voice of one crying in the wilderness,

  7. Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.

  8. John appeared, baptizing in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.

  9. And all the country of Judea and all Jerusalem were going out to him,

  10. and were being baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.

  11. Now John was clothed with camel's hair, and wore a leather belt around his waist,

  12. and ate locusts and wild honey.

  13. And he preached, saying,

  14. After me comes he who is mightier than I,

  15. the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down,

  16. and untie.

  17. I have baptized you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.

  18. Let's pray together.

  19. Father, certainly this morning we can echo the writing of the hymnists.

  20. We need you.

  21. We need you in this hour to bless the preaching of your word,

  22. for our hearing, for your sake.

  23. We pray this in Christ's name.

  24. Amen.

  25. So, today we're going to look a bit at who is John.

  26. Last week, who was Mark?

  27. Here we see who is John.

  28. But I want you to be very clear and remember that this is ultimately a story about Jesus Christ.

  29. But it's important, I think, that we know a little bit of the background.

  30. We see here in verse 4 that John appears.

  31. And he appears as the fulfillment of prophecy, as the foretold prophet.

  32. So, firstly, John was the foretold prophet.

  33. We see this bit of prophecy here in verse 2 and verse 3,

  34. which is kind of a mash-up.

  35. We know it's attributed here in Mark to Isaiah,

  36. but it's actually a bit of a combination of two.

  37. Verse 2 is the first part of Malachi 3.1,

  38. which reads in the ESV,

  39. Behold, I send my messenger, and he will prepare the way before me.

  40. And then verse 3 in Mark is from Isaiah 40, verse 3,

    Isaiah 40:3

  41. which says,

  42. A voice cries,

  43. In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord.

  44. Make straight in the desert a highway for our God.

  45. And these two verses together are commonly used,

  46. both in Matthew and in Luke,

  47. to prove who John the baptizer was,

  48. that he was this foretold prophet.

  49. Now, to clarify for you,

  50. as it says, as written in Isaiah, the prophet,

  51. it was very common when this was done,

  52. when two different prophecies were put together,

  53. to use the greater prophet,

  54. the prophet that had had more influence,

  55. that people would have been more familiar with,

  56. and to attribute the prophecy to that man.

  57. So this is a very common thing done in Hebrew writing.

  58. The writers of the New Testament quote sometimes exactly from the Hebrew.

  59. Sometimes they quote from the Septuagint,

  60. which is the Greek translation of the Old Testament.

  61. They would have had at this time.

  62. Sometimes they make sort of a general reference to a text.

  63. And sometimes it's an interpretive reference.

  64. This is what we see here.

  65. If you carefully were listening to me,

  66. quoting to you Malachi 3.1 and Isaiah 43,

  67. you saw that it wasn't the exact wording,

  68. but rather an interpretive reference.

  69. Remember that the New Testament writers were inspired,

  70. carried along by the Spirit of God to write this,

  71. and therefore we can take their interpretations as inspired

  72. to help us find meaning and help us understand the Old Testament text.

  73. So it's a common thing that's happening.

  74. As you're reading through your New Testament,

  75. and you're really checking out those cross references,

  76. and you're going back to the Old Testament,

  77. so that's not exactly what this says.

  78. It is.

  79. Because this was common practice that these people did

  80. as they were carried along by the Spirit of God.

  81. So we see that he is the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy,

  82. and this is the extent of the argument that Mark makes in that regard.

  83. He gives us two verses put together as they were commonly done to say,

  84. this John, John the Baptizer,

  85. is the one that the Old Testament was telling us about,

  86. that Malachi the prophet and Isaiah the prophet said would come

  87. and make the way, would be the predecessor for Jesus Christ.

  88. Now I say to you, this is proof enough.

  89. There it is.

  90. Need he say more?

  91. Some of the other Gospel accounts make a more extensive case

  92. for who John the Baptizer was,

  93. that he was in fact this foretold prophet.

  94. But I want to remind you that Mark, most likely,

  95. it's widely accepted,

  96. wrote this Gospel account from Rome,

  97. more than likely in a Roman prison,

  98. for Roman Christians or a Roman audience to convince them.

  99. He didn't need to use the Old Testament in an extensive fashion.

  100. It wouldn't have meant that much to them.

  101. So it's important, I think, just to pause at this moment

  102. and recognize that it's important for us to look at a letter intended audience.

  103. Why is it that Mark did it in this way?

  104. It gives us two verses to say,

  105. this is John.

  106. This is the foretold prophet.

  107. And so we see this here in verse 2 and verse 3.

  108. Now, let's get down to verse 6 for a moment as we ask this question,

  109. who was John?

  110. There is certainly much that could be said about John the Baptizer.

  111. Right?

  112. Matthew, Luke, even John, the Gospel of John,

  113. speak of John rather extensively.

  114. And they report to us a number of interesting facts about him.

  115. Firstly, he was miraculously conceived

  116. because his parents were too old and had been barren.

  117. He was filled with the Holy Spirit from his mother's womb.

  118. It's a unique thing in this day.

  119. He was a relative of Jesus.

  120. He was the culmination of Old Testament prophetic history,

  121. the last prophet,

  122. and there hadn't been a prophet for 400 years.

  123. This is John the Baptizer.

  124. Jesus said in Matthew 1.11,

  125. He's the greatest man that ever lived up until His time.

  126. Why?

  127. Because He was the predecessor.

  128. He was the herald for Jesus Christ.

  129. Jesus Himself said He's the greatest man that ever lived up until His time.

  130. There's much that could be said about John the Baptizer,

  131. but Mark doesn't mention any of this, does he?

  132. He doesn't mention any of it.

  133. In verse 6, He gives us some seemingly obscure facts.

  134. The things that I have read over the years and just thought made John an odd guy.

  135. Right?

  136. He was clothed with camel's hair,

  137. wore a leather belt around his waist,

  138. and ate locusts and wild honey.

  139. What an oddball.

  140. But there's significance to this.

  141. The reason that the descriptive things that were given by Mark as just this is very, very important.

  142. So recognize, we need to hone in on these things.

  143. Firstly, we need to see that He was in the wilderness.

  144. Right?

  145. It doesn't actually say that in verse 6.

  146. I think we're up in verse 4.

  147. Right?

  148. But we need to recognize that He was in fact in the wilderness,

  149. which was a fulfillment of the prophecy of Isaiah 43 and Micah 1.3 that we saw in verse 3.

  150. Right?

  151. He'd be the voice of one crying in the wilderness.

  152. So here we see the fulfillment of that.

  153. But why would He have been in the wilderness?

  154. It seems to me that it would have been more beneficial for John to have planted himself somewhere in the city

  155. where there were more people.

  156. That's typically a good habit if you're trying to perpetuate something,

  157. trying to get truth going, some sort of a movement, to be with people.

  158. Right?

  159. I wouldn't suggest to any of you that you go off in the wilderness to be a gospel herald.

  160. It's really not the best place to be.

  161. Go park on the AT and just talk to people who walk by you occasionally.

  162. Right?

  163. It's good to be around people.

  164. Be on campus.

  165. Be in your workplaces.

  166. Be in your neighborhoods.

  167. That's where people are.

  168. So why is it that He's in the wilderness and people are coming out to Him?

  169. You remember the wilderness at the first exodus when the people of God were led out of captivity,

  170. which was symbolic.

  171. It was a foreshadowing of the full and final salvation we have in Christ.

  172. The wilderness was a place of trial and judgment.

  173. So they're being called back out to the wilderness for the very same reason.

  174. A great quote I'm going to read to you, and I could not find the author of the quote.

  175. I found it attributed to somebody, but I don't think this person exists.

  176. I couldn't find any information about them anyway.

  177. So I'm just going to say to an unknown author, but this is very good.

  178. Listen carefully.

  179. The summons to be baptized in the Jordan means that Israel must once more come to the wilderness.

  180. As Israel long ago had been separated from Egypt by a pilgrimage through the waters of the Red Sea,

  181. the nation is exhorted again to exercise separation.

  182. The people are called to a second exodus in preparation for a new covenant with God.

  183. As the people heed John's call and go out to him in the desert,

  184. far more is involved than contrition and confession.

  185. They returned to a place of judgment, the wilderness,

  186. where the status of Israel as God's beloved son must be reestablished in the exchange of pride for humility.

  187. The willingness to return to the wilderness signifies the acknowledgement of Israel's history

  188. as one of disobedience and rebellion and a desire to begin once more.

  189. So not only is this a fulfillment of the prophecy,

  190. which I would say is the most important reason John was in the wilderness,

  191. but it was also a beckoning for people to come back to a place of humility,

  192. a place of recognition.

  193. Israel existed, dwelt in the desert for 40 years because of their disobedience.

  194. They come out once again to the wilderness to meet with him,

  195. to hear his preaching, and to be baptized.

  196. We see a record in verse 6, as I said, that he was dressed oddly.

  197. That he was dressed oddly.

  198. Certainly there could have been some practical application to him being clothed in camel's hair.

  199. In the desert it gets very cold at night.

  200. You may not realize that.

  201. Very hot in the day, but very cold at night.

  202. But the reference here is not to a hide.

  203. This wasn't a camel's hide.

  204. This would have been camel's hair woven.

  205. It's common.

  206. This happened, right?

  207. Coats and things were made of this type of material.

  208. And this is what he's wearing.

  209. Camel's hair and a leather belt.

  210. This was the garb.

  211. This was the uniform of prophets.

  212. There had yet been a prophet for 400 years.

  213. And John comes on the scene,

  214. and he knows that to be taken as a prophet,

  215. he must dress as a prophet.

  216. So catch this.

  217. Let me show you the evidence of this.

  218. Zechariah 13.4.

  219. Speaking of a day when false prophecy will cease,

  220. there's a prophecy about false prophecy ceasing,

  221. says he, being the false prophet,

  222. will not put on a hairy cloak in order to deceive.

  223. 2 Kings 1.8, when we meet Elijah the prophet,

  224. says he wore a garment of hair with a belt of leather about his waist.

  225. Elijah set the dress code for prophets.

  226. This was the way they set themselves apart from the people.

  227. They wore a rough clothing.

  228. Rather than a fine cotton, they wore rough clothing.

  229. Would have been similar to somebody clothing themselves in sackcloth.

  230. Uncomfortable cloth.

  231. This was the garb.

  232. This was the uniform of a prophet.

  233. And that's why Mark records it for us here.

  234. If you think about this,

  235. and I hope maybe at least a few of your minds were drawn to Jesus' words in Matthew 7.15,

  236. where he says,

  237. Beware of false prophets who come to you in sheep's clothing,

  238. but inwardly are ravenous wolves.

  239. Very clever turn of phrase for Jesus,

  240. because the false prophets would have in fact come

  241. in some woven form of animal fur

  242. to say to the people,

  243. I am a prophet.

  244. But the heart is what matters in this case.

  245. So, he was dressed oddly, to be sure,

  246. but to set himself apart.

  247. As a prophet for God.

  248. John did not wish to be associated with the people,

  249. but rather with the prophets.

  250. Look at this prophecy in Malachi 4, 5, and 6 concerning John.

  251. Behold, I will send you Elijah,

  252. the prophet,

  253. before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes.

  254. And he will turn the hearts of fathers to their children,

  255. and the hearts of children to their fathers,

  256. lest I come and strike the land with a decree

  257. of utter destruction.

  258. This is Malachi prophesying much time has passed

  259. since Elijah was on the scene.

  260. And here it says,

  261. Behold, I will send you Elijah,

  262. one like Elijah,

  263. the one we know as John,

  264. the baptizer.

  265. Now, as a side note,

  266. it's of some significance,

  267. but we also see that he ate oddly.

  268. He ate locusts and honey.

  269. These would have been plentiful things for him to eat in the desert.

  270. Would have been things that the average individual would not have ate as their set-apart diet.

  271. And so again, he's separating himself from the people.

  272. Incidentally, if you care about this,

  273. Leviticus 11, 22,

  274. the locusts were one of the only insects that God permitted people to eat in this day.

  275. So locusts, crickets, and grasshoppers were permissible in this way.

  276. I thought it was very interesting information about how they cooked them.

  277. All kinds of ways.

  278. I thought of the scene in Forrest Gump,

  279. all the different ways you can cook shrimp.

  280. They did all kinds of things with them.

  281. They roasted them.

  282. They ground them up and put them in flour.

  283. It's a good source of protein.

  284. Took off the legs and the wings,

  285. and did all kinds of things with the locusts.

  286. And this is what John ate.

  287. Plentiful supply of locusts and honey would have been there for him.

  288. Good protein and carbohydrate complement there.

  289. So this is what John is doing.

  290. This is why Mark chooses to share this information with us.

  291. So here's how we see it.

  292. We see John as a prophet in the line of Elijah,

  293. sent from God to herald the coming of the king.

  294. So that's who John was secondly.

  295. John was the herald of the king.

  296. We'll go back to verse 1.

  297. And recall his language here.

  298. The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  299. The Son of God.

  300. And this word gospel is the word euangelion.

  301. Euangelion.

  302. And now as he's writing to a primarily Gentile population,

  303. in Rome there would have been Jews as well.

  304. And they would have really understood this term.

  305. It meant generally good news.

  306. We know that.

  307. Gospel.

  308. Good news.

  309. It meant that generally.

  310. And was used in that way throughout history.

  311. Throughout both Hebrew and Greek writing.

  312. In a very general sense.

  313. But it more often was specifically used to speak of the coming of a God king.

  314. We have a couple of Old Testament examples of that.

  315. I read these to you last week.

  316. Isaiah 40 chapter 9.

  317. Go on up to a high mountain, O Zion.

  318. Herald of good news.

  319. Here's the word.

  320. In the Greek, in the Septuagint, would have been this word.

  321. Would have been translated that way.

  322. Lift up your voice with strength, O Jerusalem.

  323. Herald of good news.

  324. Euangelion.

  325. Lift it up.

  326. Fear not.

  327. Say to the cities of Judah,

  328. Behold your God.

  329. So here they are heralding God.

  330. Isaiah 52.7 says,

  331. How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news.

  332. Euangelion.

  333. Who publishes peace.

  334. Who brings good news of happiness.

  335. Who publishes salvation.

  336. Who says to Zion,

  337. Your God reigns.

  338. Again, heralding the God king who will come.

  339. There also would have been a very clear understanding of this term in Greek culture.

  340. In Gentile culture.

  341. In Rome as well.

  342. Listen to this inscription from 9 B.C.

  343. Okay, so track the timeline there.

  344. Pre-Christ, 9 B.C.

  345. Listen to this inscription.

  346. The providence which has ordered the whole of our life,

  347. Showing concern and zeal,

  348. Has ordained the most perfect consummation for human life,

  349. By giving to it Augustus.

  350. Caesar Augustus.

  351. By filling him with virtue for doing the work of a benefactor among men,

  352. And by sending in him, as it were,

  353. A savior for us and those who come after us,

  354. To make war cease,

  355. To create order everywhere,

  356. The birthday of the God Augustus

  357. Is the beginning for the world of the good news,

  358. Of the gospel that has come to men through him.

  359. So this inscription, apparently,

  360. Etched on Caesar Augustus' birthday,

  361. Uses that very same term,

  362. Of course, in this manner,

  363. Speaking of Caesar Augustus.

  364. They worshipped him as a God-king.

  365. So they would have understood this term as well,

  366. This euangelion, right?

  367. That this was a good news of the coming of a king

  368. That was not just a king,

  369. But God who would reign.

  370. A lot of significance, right?

  371. In that little word,

  372. Right there at the beginning of the gospel of Mark.

  373. The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ,

  374. The Son of God.

  375. And here we see him ascribing to Jesus

  376. As Yeshua, the God who saves,

  377. As Christ, the anointed one, right?

  378. The king who saves,

  379. And as the Son of God,

  380. Who has equality then with God.

  381. You see now the power and the thrust of verse 1.

  382. And then he goes right on to tell us about

  383. John the baptizer,

  384. The one who is coming to tell us of this

  385. God-king,

  386. Who is coming to reign.

  387. Turn to Luke chapter 1.

    Luke 1 chapter mention

  388. This is the record of the angel coming to Zechariah,

  389. Who was John the baptizer's father.

  390. Beginning in verse 13,

  391. It says,

  392. Do not be afraid, Zechariah,

  393. For your prayer has been heard,

  394. And your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son,

  395. John.

  396. And you shall call his name John,

  397. And you will have joy and gladness,

  398. And many will rejoice at his birth.

  399. For he will be great before the Lord.

  400. And he must not drink wine or strong drink,

  401. And he will be filled with the Holy Spirit,

  402. Even from his mother's womb.

  403. And he will turn many of the children of Israel

  404. To the Lord their God.

  405. And he will go before him

  406. In the spirit and power of Elijah.

  407. There he is again, Elijah.

  408. To turn the heart to the fathers,

  409. To the children,

  410. And the disobedient to the wisdom of the just,

  411. To make ready for the Lord

  412. A people prepared.

  413. So here's the work that he's about doing, right?

  414. Heralding the coming of this king,

  415. The Lord,

  416. The one who will come and reign,

  417. To make them ready for his reign.

  418. So what was he saying to prepare the people?

  419. What was it that he was preaching

  420. To prepare the people

  421. For the coming of Jesus?

  422. We see in verse 4,

  423. Excuse me, I'm going to back up a sec.

  424. Firstly, judgment.

  425. Not found necessarily in verse 4,

  426. But we see that in verse 4,

  427. He was preaching a baptism of repentance

  428. For the forgiveness of sins.

  429. Why do we need forgiveness of sins

  430. If there is no judgment?

  431. Okay, so there's my connection for you.

  432. Right?

  433. But turn down to Luke chapter 3.

    Luke 3 chapter mention

  434. To show you some of what he was saying.

  435. We'll step out of Mark

  436. To give you a little bit of weight

  437. To what was being preached

  438. By John the baptizer.

  439. Beginning in verse 7,

  440. He said therefore to the crowds

  441. That came out to be baptized by him,

  442. You brood of vipers,

  443. Who warned you to flee

  444. From the wrath to come?

  445. Bear fruits in keeping with repentance

  446. And do not begin to say to yourselves,

  447. We have Abraham as our father.

  448. For I tell you,

  449. God is able from these stones

  450. To raise up children for Abraham.

  451. Even now the axe is laid

  452. To the root of the tree.

  453. Every tree therefore

  454. That does not bear good fruit

  455. Is cut down and thrown into the fire.

  456. Right?

  457. Don't come out here

  458. Making claims

  459. That just because you're a Jew

  460. You have salvation.

  461. Right?

  462. You must bear fruit

  463. In keeping with repentance.

  464. That's what he's saying.

  465. He's preaching judgment to them.

  466. And then skip down to verse 15.

  467. As the people were in expectation

  468. And all were questioning

  469. In their hearts concerning John

  470. Whether he might be the Christ,

  471. John answered them all saying,

  472. I baptize you with water,

  473. But he who is mightier than I

  474. Is coming,

  475. The strap of whose sandals

  476. I'm not worthy to untie,

  477. He will baptize you

  478. With the Holy Spirit

  479. And fire.

  480. His winnowing fork

  481. Is in his hand

  482. To clear his threshing floor

  483. And to gather the wheat

  484. Into his barn.

  485. But the chaff he will burn

  486. With unquenchable fire.

  487. So here he is

  488. Preaching this judgment

  489. Upon the people

  490. That are coming out to him.

  491. Because of your sin,

  492. Because of your offense to God,

  493. You will be destroyed.

  494. Right?

  495. So here we see

  496. As he's preaching

  497. A baptism of repentance

  498. For the forgiveness of sins,

  499. This is why.

  500. Right?

  501. It's this teaching of judgment

  502. That he's bringing upon them.

  503. That God will in fact

  504. Judge the wicked.

  505. Secondly,

  506. He's also preaching

  507. Repentance.

  508. I flipped my notes this morning

  509. So I apologize for the

  510. Previous misspeak.

  511. He's preaching repentance.

  512. A baptism of repentance

  513. For the forgiveness of sins.

  514. Now at this point,

  515. This is where I'd like to explain to you

  516. Why I like to call him

  517. John the Baptizer.

  518. Right?

  519. This was a signifying mark for him.

  520. Certainly appropriate to him

  521. As he was in the wilderness

  522. Baptizing

  523. In the Jordan River.

  524. Right?

  525. It's a way to set him apart.

  526. There were a lot of Johns

  527. In this day.

  528. A couple of years ago

  529. We would have said that

  530. Of our church as well.

  531. Lots of Johns

  532. In our church.

  533. Right?

  534. So this is a way of

  535. Setting him apart.

  536. Right?

  537. John was not the first Baptist.

  538. To be clear.

  539. Right?

  540. I think he would have

  541. Agreed with us.

  542. But he was not

  543. The first Baptist.

  544. He was simply

  545. John who baptized.

  546. Right?

  547. John the Baptizer.

  548. Right?

  549. But what is this

  550. Baptism that he's doing?

  551. What is this

  552. Pre-Christ

  553. Baptism

  554. That we're observing

  555. At this point?

  556. Because we understand

  557. Baptism to be

  558. A symbol

  559. A picture

  560. Of what Christ

  561. Has accomplished

  562. On our behalf

  563. With his death

  564. And his resurrection.

  565. Right?

  566. Romans 6

  567. 3-4 says

  568. Do you not know

  569. That all of us

  570. Who have been baptized

  571. Into Christ Jesus

  572. Were baptized

  573. Into his death?

  574. We were buried

  575. Therefore with him

  576. By baptism

  577. Into death

  578. In order that

  579. Just as Christ

  580. Was raised from the dead

  581. By the glory of the Father

  582. We too might walk

  583. In the newness of life.

  584. Okay?

  585. So here we have

  586. The picture

  587. That Paul's laying out

  588. For us

  589. About what baptism

  590. Is meant to symbolize

  591. To show people

  592. What has taken place

  593. In our hearts.

  594. Right?

  595. But Christ has yet to be

  596. Killed and buried

  597. And resurrected.

  598. Right?

  599. So what is this baptism

  600. That John is performing

  601. In the wilderness?

  602. There was a practice

  603. Called proselytite baptism

  604. And that would have been

  605. For somebody

  606. Who was not

  607. Of Jewish descent

  608. But was a Gentile

  609. And wanted to come

  610. And worship God

  611. With the Jews.

  612. Right?

  613. As they saw rightly

  614. To worship the God

  615. Of the Hebrews

  616. And wanted to be included

  617. In that community

  618. Of faith.

  619. It's called

  620. Proselytite baptism.

  621. Right?

  622. It was a very uncommon thing.

  623. Very, very rarely happened.

  624. But by and large

  625. Up until this point

  626. Until Christ sends the gospel

  627. Out to the world.

  628. Right?

  629. Israel had been very closed off

  630. To the nations.

  631. They were really meant

  632. To be that way.

  633. We talked about that

  634. In Nehemiah

  635. That they were meant

  636. To be a people

  637. Set apart for God's glory.

  638. So it's very rare

  639. That God brought

  640. Into the family

  641. Into the community

  642. Somebody in this way.

  643. But recognize

  644. Who's coming out.

  645. Verse 5

  646. And all the country

  647. Of Judea

  648. And all Samaria

  649. A vast number of people

  650. We don't read these

  651. Alls as literal

  652. Alls

  653. But a vast number

  654. Of people

  655. Are coming out.

  656. People of Jewish descent

  657. Judea and Jerusalem.

  658. Right?

  659. I think I just said

  660. Samaria.

  661. Excuse me.

  662. Judea and Jerusalem

  663. They're coming out

  664. To be baptized

  665. With a proselytite

  666. Baptism.

  667. Which was to say

  668. They recognized

  669. Their offense

  670. Against God

  671. To the degree

  672. That they saw

  673. That they ought

  674. Not be treated

  675. As the people of God.

  676. That they should be

  677. Treated as a Gentile

  678. Outside of this

  679. Community

  680. This covenant community.

  681. They were seeing

  682. That it was more

  683. Than just

  684. Their Jewish descent

  685. That made them

  686. Right before God.

  687. But rather

  688. Repentance of sin

  689. And righteous living.

  690. Catch that.

  691. That's important.

  692. This was

  693. For these Jews

  694. Radical repentance.

  695. Seeing this

  696. To be the case

  697. Was a huge

  698. Deal

  699. For them.

  700. Now

  701. What John

  702. Was doing for them

  703. Was simply

  704. To prepare them

  705. For the Christ.

  706. Simply to prepare them

  707. For what was happening.

  708. This was not

  709. Forgiveness

  710. Of their sins.

  711. Right?

  712. But it was to prepare

  713. Their hearts

  714. For the gospel

  715. That was coming

  716. To them

  717. In the person

  718. And work

  719. Of Jesus Christ.

  720. Okay?

  721. So be careful

  722. At that step.

  723. Right?

  724. This was not

  725. John had a special

  726. A special time

  727. Where he got to

  728. Baptize people

  729. And that forgave

  730. Their sins.

  731. It didn't.

  732. In fact

  733. We have a record here

  734. That all the country

  735. Of Judea

  736. And all Jerusalem

  737. Were coming out to him

  738. Listening to his teaching

  739. Receiving his baptism.

  740. How many people

  741. After Christ is crucified

  742. Do we see waiting

  743. Upon him

  744. Afterwards?

  745. Right?

  746. 120.

  747. So was there

  748. True

  749. Genuine

  750. Repentance

  751. On their part?

  752. No.

  753. But this was a step

  754. To prepare them

  755. For what was to come.

  756. Most of these people

  757. Came out

  758. Thinking

  759. They were repenting

  760. And in fact

  761. Weren't.

  762. But this was what

  763. Was going on.

  764. This is proselytite

  765. Baptism.

  766. This is why

  767. He was baptizing

  768. In this way.

  769. Thirdly

  770. John was preaching

  771. Jesus Christ.

  772. I'm getting to you next.

  773. Verse 8

  774. We see that

  775. John baptized

  776. With water

  777. But Jesus

  778. Will baptize

  779. With the Holy Spirit.

  780. We're not referring here

  781. To some

  782. Pentecostal

  783. Second baptism.

  784. It's not at all

  785. What's being talked about here.

  786. This is the washing

  787. Of regeneration

  788. And the renewing

  789. Of the Holy Spirit

  790. Of Titus chapter 3.

    Titus 3 chapter mention

  791. This is the new covenant

  792. Purification

  793. Cleansing

  794. Transformation

  795. Regeneration

  796. New birth.

  797. And John says to them

  798. I can't give you that.

  799. I can prepare the way.

  800. I can herald

  801. The coming king.

  802. The one

  803. Who can come

  804. And give to you

  805. New hearts.

  806. The one that will

  807. Come to you

  808. And bring you

  809. The Holy Spirit.

  810. I can't do that.

  811. I can prepare your hearts.

  812. I can maybe

  813. Massage them a little bit

  814. To get you prepared

  815. For the coming

  816. Of the king

  817. Who can give you

  818. The spirit.

  819. This is why

  820. He says

  821. He's not even

  822. Worthy to untie

  823. Jesus' sandals.

  824. It was not his point

  825. To get people

  826. To worship him.

  827. It was his point

  828. To get people

  829. To worship

  830. The Christ.

  831. Right?

  832. Now understand

  833. That this task

  834. That he says

  835. That he is below

  836. Would have been

  837. The lowest

  838. Possible task

  839. For any slave

  840. In Jewish culture.

  841. This would have been

  842. The lowliest

  843. Of the low task.

  844. The reason that

  845. Jesus washed

  846. The disciples' feet

  847. Would have been this.

  848. You did not

  849. Want to be around

  850. Feet at this time.

  851. I think as a culture

  852. Now we probably

  853. Understand that more

  854. Because all of you

  855. Wear Chacos

  856. All summer.

  857. And your feet

  858. Stink.

  859. Right?

  860. We at least

  861. Get the benefit

  862. Of bathing

  863. And soap

  864. For our sandals

  865. And can do things

  866. Like that.

  867. They didn't do that

  868. As often

  869. In this case.

  870. And their feet

  871. Stunk.

  872. Right?

  873. They were dirty.

  874. Filthy.

  875. So the job

  876. For a slave

  877. To untie

  878. Somebody's sandals

  879. Was a low job.

  880. In fact

  881. Most masters

  882. Didn't require

  883. That of any

  884. Of their slaves.

  885. They thought

  886. It so belittling

  887. They didn't even

  888. Ask them to do it.

  889. They would untie

  890. Their sandals

  891. Themselves

  892. And then let

  893. The slave

  894. Wash their feet.

  895. Right?

  896. So this is

  897. An incredibly

  898. Subservient thing.

  899. And what John

  900. Is saying is

  901. I'm not even

  902. Worthy

  903. To do that.

  904. Right?

  905. Think of the

  906. Most humble person

  907. In our society.

  908. I am more humble

  909. Than that

  910. Compared to

  911. This Christ.

  912. Right?

  913. John was a great man.

  914. Jesus himself said

  915. That John was a great man.

  916. Filled with the spirit

  917. From his mother's womb.

  918. Right?

  919. Accomplishing

  920. Great things

  921. For the coming

  922. Of the kingdom.

  923. The first prophet

  924. In 400 years.

  925. And he says

  926. Compared to the one

  927. Who is coming

  928. I am

  929. Nothing.

  930. His aim

  931. Was to point

  932. People

  933. To Christ.

  934. We see the record

  935. Of the words here.

  936. John chapter 3

    John 3:28–30

  937. Verse 28 through 30.

  938. John the baptizer

  939. Speaking.

  940. He says

  941. I am not the Christ.

  942. People were speculating that.

  943. They thought maybe he was.

  944. He says

  945. I am not the Christ

  946. But I have been sent

  947. Before him.

  948. The one who has the bride

  949. Is the bridegroom.

  950. The friend of the bridegroom

  951. Who stands and hears him

  952. Rejoices greatly

  953. At the bridegroom's voice.

  954. That's John.

  955. The friend of the bridegroom.

  956. Therefore

  957. This joy of mine

  958. Is now complete.

  959. He must increase

  960. But I must decrease.

  961. He must be made great.

  962. Stop coming

  963. And looking to me.

  964. Stop worshipping me.

  965. I am simply

  966. John the baptizer.

  967. The one you need to worship

  968. Is Jesus.

  969. The Christ.

  970. And that's what he was

  971. Out there doing.

  972. Preaching this.

  973. Judgment.

  974. The repentance of sin.

  975. And Jesus Christ

  976. In whom we find

  977. Our forgiveness.

  978. Jesus.

  979. Jesus.

  980. The coming king.

  981. Jesus.

  982. The one who would come

  983. And rule

  984. In the hearts of men.

  985. Who would bring his kingdom

  986. To earth in a way

  987. That nobody thought

  988. As they reviewed

  989. The Old Testament text.

  990. They thought he would come

  991. In a charge

  992. With an army.

  993. Conquer Rome.

  994. Send them back

  995. Cowering.

  996. Instead he came

  997. And brought his kingdom

  998. To rule in the hearts

  999. Of the men.

1000. And that is the kingdom

  1001. We are part of

  1002. This morning.

  1003. We are part of

  1004. This kingdom.

  1005. So John was the

  1006. Foretold prophet

  1007. Who came to herald

  1008. The coming

  1009. Of a new king.

  1010. It's good news.

  1011. Isn't it?

  1012. That is good news.

1013. A king who would usher

  1014. A kingdom

  1015. Of forgiveness

  1016. For sins.

  1017. John foretold

  1018. The coming of

  1019. Jesus Christ

  1020. Who would be

  1021. The great climax

  1022. Of redemptive history.

  1023. The Jesus that we

1024. Have placed our faith in

  1025. For the forgiveness

  1026. Of our sins.

1027. The source of our life.

  1028. Our joy.

  1029. Our comfort.

  1030. Our peace.

  1031. He is to us

  1032. Our great prophet.

  1033. Our atoning priest.

  1034. And our glorious king.

1035. And now it has been

  1036. Given to us

  1037. As those who are

  1038. Filled by the spirit

1039. By the work of Christ.

  1040. Much like John

1041. Was filled by the spirit.

  1042. To also be heralds

  1043. Of our king

  1044. Who is coming

  1045. Again

  1046. To return.

  1047. This is the place

  1048. We find ourselves in.

  1049. He has come

  1050. Brought the kingdom.

  1051. He's coming

  1052. To complete

  1053. That work.

  1054. Right?

  1055. And that is our

  1056. Task now.

  1057. In that way

  1058. John's a very unique

  1059. Character in the

  1060. Biblical narrative.

  1061. But in that way

  1062. We should be

  1063. Just like him.

  1064. Making much of Christ.

  1065. Making very little

  1066. Of ourselves.

  1067. Right?

1068. I fail if you look at me

  1069. On Sunday morning.

  1070. Right?

1071. If you look at me

  1072. And think

  1073. Nathan's a great speaker.

1074. But if you do that

  1075. I failed

  1076. At my job.

  1077. Right?

  1078. But if you look

  1079. To Christ

  1080. And you say

1081. Christ is a great savior.

  1082. He is a king

  1083. Worth worshipping.

  1084. Then I have succeeded.

  1085. Right?

  1086. I must decrease.

  1087. He must increase.

  1088. Right?

  1089. All of us

  1090. Must do this

1091. For the sake of the kingdom

  1092. Our good

  1093. And God's glory.

  1094. Let's pray together.

  1095. Amen.

  1096. Amen.

  1097. Amen.

  1098. Amen.

  1099. Amen.
