  1. If you have a copy of God's Word, I invite you to open with me to Mark chapter 1.

    Mark 1 chapter mention

  2. Mark chapter 1.

    Mark 1 chapter mention

  3. We've been tracking with Jesus through the book of Mark over the past several weeks.

  4. And in case you've missed it, or just to refresh your memory, I want to catch you up to where we are thus far,

  5. and where we've been thus far in the book of Mark.

  6. And to do that, I want to use a map.

  7. Sometimes it's good to see a geographical context of where we've been and where we are.

  8. So we could get that map up there.

  9. This map that we're using is a map of the upper region of Galilee.

  10. Galilee is a region. It's not a town. It's not a country. It's a region.

  11. A lot of times people get confused about that.

  12. Over here is the Mediterranean Sea, just to kind of give you a geographical context.

  13. This is in modern-day Israel.

  14. And where we've been thus far is, we'll come down here and we'll see that Nazareth is right there.

  15. Nazareth is the town where Jesus grew up in.

  16. It wasn't where he was born, but where he grew up.

  17. But we've seen Jesus move from Nazareth over to this region over here, where it's the Jordan River.

  18. The Jordan River flows between these two bodies of water and actually flows south of here as well.

  19. But the Jordan River is right here where Jesus was baptized.

  20. And then we see Jesus come down from the Jordan River to the shores of the banks of the Sea of Galilee,

  21. where he's called his first four disciples.

  22. So far we've seen Simon Peter, Andrew, James, and John.

  23. And this week we arrive in a little fishing village called Capernaum.

  24. It's right there.

  25. If I can hold the thing on there just right.

  26. It's Capernaum. It's a fishing village.

  27. It's a very prominent fishing town of this time.

  28. And it's actually the hometown of Simon Peter.

  29. And this is really where we pick up in verse 21 of chapter 1 of Mark.

  30. It says,

  31. They went to Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath he entered the synagogue and began to teach.

  32. I want to pause here for a moment because Clay last week pointed out something that's really important to us

  33. as we track through the book of Mark.

  34. Mark likes to use words indicating immediacy,

  35. or things that show quick action from one place to another.

  36. In fact, we see this word immediate no less than ten times in the first chapter alone of Mark.

  37. So Jesus, we see, immediately is compelled to go into the wilderness after his baptism.

  38. Simon and Andrew immediately drop their nets to follow Jesus.

  39. And here Jesus gets to Capernaum and immediately begins to teach.

  40. So Mark is really, by using these words and using this immediacy,

  41. he's really showing the urgency of the task at hand,

  42. that Jesus' ministry is one of urgency.

  43. It's one of necessity.

  44. And we move from places very quick in the book of Mark.

  45. And so, Jesus gets to Capernaum, likely with the first four disciples,

  46. and says,

  47. Man, that was a tough hike.

  48. I'm feeling pretty tired today.

  49. I think, since it's the Sabbath, we're just going to take a break and just kick up.

  50. No, that's not what happens.

  51. Jesus gets to Capernaum and he says,

  52. Does somebody say it's the Sabbath?

  53. Surely there's got to be somebody at the synagogue.

  54. Let's get to work.

  55. And Jesus begins to get to work.

  56. He begins teaching in the synagogue.

  57. By the way, the reason why Jesus is able to do this is because there is a Jewish tradition

  58. in the synagogues of that day where traveling teachers could go into a synagogue and begin to teach.

  59. They did that so that they could hear from other teachers.

  60. And if somebody happened to be traveling, then it was a great thing to be able to hear from different people.

  61. And so they allowed traveling rabbis and known teachers to be able to teach within the synagogues.

  62. So Jesus is using that right that he has to go into these places and teach when he's teaching there.

  63. Verse 22, it says that they were amazed at his teaching.

  64. For he was teaching as one having authority and not as the scribes.

  65. So there's something different about the way Jesus taught.

  66. He was different than the scribes and the teachers of that day.

  67. This is really important.

  68. We're going to come back to that.

  69. Verse 23, then there was a man in their synagogues with an unclean spirit.

  70. In other words, he was demon possessed.

  71. This demon possession and men filled with unclean spirits is synonymous in the New Testament.

  72. And he cried out saying, what business do we have with each other, Jesus of Nazareth?

  73. Have you come to destroy us?

  74. I know who you are, the Holy One of God.

  75. Now notice here, the demonized man was in the synagogue, which is essentially the old covenant equivalent of the church gathering place.

  76. It would be like somebody coming into this room or into this building and creating a scene and shouting out loud during the teaching time.

  77. So don't think for a minute that in the church all the people there are great,

  78. and that the people outside of the church are the only ones who are demon possessed.

  79. Because I would almost guarantee you, I can't know for certain, but I would almost guarantee you there are people all across our nation right now

  80. who are entering into church buildings with demon possession.

  81. Jesus called them wolves in sheep's clothing, and the enemy loves to enter into these places.

  82. He loves to infiltrate our camps.

  83. He loves to infiltrate our churches.

  84. And they cause all kinds of division and strife and conflict within the flock.

  85. And that's what's happening in this text.

  86. Jesus is bringing in the kingdom of God.

  87. The kingdom of God, we already know, is at hand.

  88. And as the kingdom of God is ushered in, the kingdom of darkness is lashing out against it.

  89. They rightfully don't want Jesus there, because he is disrupting their world.

  90. He's disrupting their mission to destroy people's souls and destroy people in a very dark way.

  91. This time, however, they're messing with the wrong person.

  92. As we continue on in verse 25,

  93. So three primary truths that we're going to focus on this morning.

  94. And the first thing that we see in this passage is that Jesus had authority in his teaching.

  95. There's something different about Jesus when he taught than the teachers of that day.

  96. Jesus didn't bore people with the Bible.

  97. That's one of the greatest travesties a teacher of God's Word can commit,

  98. is teaching in a boring way.

  99. And it's happening all over the country this morning,

  100. where preachers and teachers are boring people with God's Word.

  101. And to bore people with this Word that's so rich, is so meaningful,

  102. is so powerful and authoritative, sharper than any two-edged sword,

  103. and able to pierce as far as joint and marrow, according to Hebrews 4.12.

  104. Jesus didn't just get up there and read some passages and just kind of make a few comments here and there,

  105. like most of the teachers of that day did.

  106. We've seen already some examples of Jesus' teaching,

  107. and examples of how he taught with authority.

  108. Last week, we saw where he said,

  109. The time is fulfilled.

  110. The kingdom of God is at hand.

  111. Repent and believe in the Gospel.

  112. It was foretold that this would happen, by the way,

  113. in Isaiah 11.2.

  114. It says that,

  115. So we see Jesus teaching with authority,

  116. and always in such a way that spurred his followers,

  117. the people who are listening to him,

  118. into action somehow.

  119. And he was compelling in a very unique way.

  120. Now, when I was in seminary,

  121. I had the opportunity to listen to a lot of preachers and teachers.

  122. When you're in a place, if you can imagine,

  123. in a place where you have three chapel services every week,

  124. in addition to your Sunday night, Sunday morning, and Wednesday night,

  125. activities, you hear a bunch of sermons,

  126. and you get to hear from a lot of different people,

  127. which for the most part, is a really, really good thing.

  128. It's good to see the different dynamics and teaching styles.

  129. It's really good to be able to see how they divide the Word of God differently.

  130. But every now and then, you run across someone who's in it for themselves.

  131. And they're in it to make a name for themselves.

  132. And oftentimes, you'll see these guys on TV.

  133. And the primary reason is because they have made it a mission and a goal in their lives

  134. to make a name for themselves.

  135. And they have placed themselves in a position where they are in front of people.

  136. And oftentimes, they're in front of people.

  137. And they're on the news.

  138. You see them on CNN sometimes making incredibly unbiblical comments.

  139. It's because they've built themselves up to the point,

  140. and they think that they are just going after it.

  141. And these guys are really good communicators, by the way.

  142. They'll tickle your ears.

  143. They'll make you laugh.

  144. But when it comes down to the content of what they're saying,

  145. it's man-centered truth, not Bible-centered truth, and not God-centered truth.

  146. And I want you to hear this this morning.

  147. The deal is that good preaching never leads to man-centered praise.

  148. Good teaching, good Bible teaching will never lead to man-centered praise.

  149. As a teacher of God's Word, I almost cringe.

  150. And I hesitate to say this because I don't want to discourage anybody.

  151. But I almost cringe when people say,

  152. Good job, Kyle.

  153. That was a great sermon.

  154. And it's not because I don't like that.

  155. And if you've said that before, it's not a big deal.

  156. I don't want to make a big deal out of just that fact.

  157. But the reason why I cringe is because it seems like I'm taking credit where credit isn't due.

  158. Because if there's anything good about something that I say or the way I preach,

  159. it's not because of me.

  160. It's because of the Spirit that works in and through me.

  161. And God deserves the glory, not man.

  162. I'd much rather have preached in such a way that people don't say,

  163. Great job, Kyle.

  164. I'd rather preach in such a way that people say,

  165. Wow, what an amazing God we serve.

  166. Because He is amazing.

  167. And preaching should lead to God-centered praise, not to man-centered praise,

  168. with the exception, by the way, of one preacher

  169. who deserves all the praise and the glory that we can give to Him.

  170. And I'm not talking about Spurgeon or Whitfield or Jonathan Edwards.

  171. We like those people too.

  172. But it's Jesus.

  173. He speaks as one with authority because He is one with authority.

  174. He speaks as one with authority because He is the authority.

  175. As one writer put it,

  176. Jesus' teaching is different than the scribes of that day

  177. because His teaching is tied to His very character.

  178. And that's just it.

  179. Everything about Jesus is holy.

  180. Everything about Him is God.

  181. He is 100% God.

  182. When He speaks,

  183. every single word that comes out of His mouth

  184. is the Word of God.

  185. And people are rightfully amazed by Him in this context

  186. because He is amazing.

  187. He is the spoken, living, breathing Word of God.

  188. And so we clearly see that Jesus had authority in His teaching

  189. and He was rightfully authoritative in His teaching.

  190. When I teach, or when Nathan teaches,

  191. or when other people here,

  192. Clay last week and Chris is speaking next week,

  193. when we teach,

  194. we teach on the authority of the Word of God.

  195. We don't want to teach on our own authority.

  196. We teach on the authority of the Word of God.

  197. So we see that Jesus was authoritative in His teaching,

  198. but Jesus also had authority over demons.

  199. We see that very clearly in this text,

  200. that Jesus has authority over demons.

  201. So that brings up the question,

  202. is spiritual warfare and demons, are they real?

  203. But some people in our culture will tell you,

  204. no, they're not real.

  205. But it's written all over the pages of Scripture,

  206. that yes, spiritual warfare is real.

  207. Demons are real.

  208. Satan is real.

  209. C.S. Lewis wrote a good little book called Screwtape Letters.

  210. Anybody in here ever read that book?

  211. A few of us?

  212. It's a tough read.

  213. Sometimes it's hard for us to read that

  214. because C.S. Lewis kind of gets into the mind

  215. of what it's like to be a demon

  216. or to be on the dark side of spiritual warfare.

  217. It's a crazy book.

  218. And it's amazing how he's able to write it.

  219. Now, it's not truth.

  220. It's fictional.

  221. But he does write some truth in there.

  222. And he makes this interesting little statement

  223. in the Screwtape Letters that goes like this.

  224. He says,

  225. There are two equal and opposite errors

  226. in which our race could fall about the devils.

  227. One is to believe in their existence.

  228. The other is to believe

  229. and to feel an excessive, unhealthy interest in them.

  230. And so what he's saying here is that people,

  231. when they hear demons,

  232. when they hear about spiritual warfare,

  233. what they often do is they resort to one of two things.

  234. Oftentimes they'll either go,

  235. I don't want to see them.

  236. I don't want to hear about them.

  237. I don't believe in them.

  238. I just want to ignore everything the Bible has to say about them.

  239. You're making me feel awkward by even talking about them.

  240. So some of you might be going there right now.

  241. You might be like,

  242. Kyle, I'm just kidding.

  243. I'm feeling awkward even talking about it right now.

  244. Others of you will have an unhealthy,

  245. inordinate obsession with them

  246. where you blame everything that happens

  247. that's bad in your life on spiritual warfare.

  248. I've heard some pretty crazy stuff.

  249. I won't tell you exactly what I've heard,

  250. but it's just crazy stuff.

  251. Kind of like somebody would say,

  252. you know,

  253. my coffee is hot,

  254. hotter today than it was yesterday,

  255. and hell is hot,

  256. so that means that the demons of coffee

  257. are trying to scorch my tongue,

  258. and they're trying to punish me today.

  259. And I've heard some crazy off-the-wall stuff.

  260. I've heard people blame Satan for their sin.

  261. Satan made me do it.

  262. Let's call sin what it is,

  263. and it's an act of our own act,

  264. our own choice to commit an atrocity against God,

  265. to go outside of what God's Word has told us.

  266. That's what sin is.

  267. It's not anybody making us do it.

  268. It's our own wrong.

  269. It's our own decision.

  270. So to deny spiritual warfare is wrongful,

  271. and to overemphasize it is wrongful as well.

  272. But spiritual warfare does exist,

  273. and demons do exist,

  274. and Satan does exist.

  275. So what does that mean for us?

  276. It means we're at war.

  277. We're constantly at war

  278. in a lot of different ways.

  279. We're not just at war spiritually.

  280. We're also at war with our flesh,

  281. according to Scripture.

  282. We know that spiritual warfare is going on,

  283. and any good soldier,

  284. in order to learn how to defeat the enemy,

  285. has to know his enemy.

  286. And so we see here that we need to know our enemy.

  287. Scripture reveals much to us about Satan and demons.

  288. We're not going to go into everything about that.

  289. We don't have time this morning.

  290. We could spend weeks on learning about our enemy.

  291. So we're just going to stick to what does this text tell us

  292. about demons and spiritual warfare.

  293. The first thing that we should note here

  294. is that Satan and demons can speak,

  295. and that they are crafty.

  296. They're smart.

  297. They don't just come to us dressed in red,

  298. holding pitchforks,

  299. saying,

  300. I'm a demon,

  301. and I'm here to destroy your soul.

  302. Right?

  303. They come to us very subtly.

  304. In this case,

  305. a demon is coming into the synagogue,

  306. into God's camp, so to speak,

  307. and he is disguised inside of a human.

  308. They're not just going to come to us

  309. and make us fearful of them.

  310. Satan came to Adam and Eve as a serpent.

  311. And the way these evil spirits often operate

  312. is they'll come to you in the context of truth.

  313. They'll begin to twist that truth

  314. and turn it into a lie.

  315. And then they'll begin to promise goodness

  316. apart from God.

  317. We talked about this in our college Bible study

  318. a couple of weeks ago,

  319. where the lie that Satan tells Adam and Eve

  320. in the garden,

  321. it's just a mere,

  322. it's a simple atrocity.

  323. I mean, it is just an affront on God.

  324. He tells them that by eating the fruit,

  325. they will be like God.

  326. And here's the lie.

  327. Adam and Eve,

  328. when they were created,

  329. they were already like God.

  330. They were created in God's own image.

  331. He states it more than once in Genesis chapter 2.

    Genesis 2 chapter mention

  332. And so we see that the Satan,

  333. in the context of truth,

  334. he twists that truth

  335. and turns it into a lie.

  336. The reality was for Adam and Eve,

  337. they became less like God.

  338. when they sinned.

  339. Because before,

  340. they were able to commune with God.

  341. They were running to God.

  342. They were enjoying His presence.

  343. After they sinned,

  344. it became a whole different story.

  345. They're running from God

  346. in sheer terror of God.

  347. They became less like Him in reality.

  348. So we need to recognize the enemy's schemes

  349. and resist him.

  350. The next thing that we need to recognize

  351. and understand about our enemy

  352. is that even though they may be crafty,

  353. that God is creator

  354. and they are creature.

  355. Which means that God is sovereign

  356. and Satan and demons are subordinate.

  357. You look at what happens in this passage.

  358. Verse 25,

  359. And Jesus rebuked him saying,

  360. Be quiet and come out of him.

  361. There's no magic formula there.

  362. There's no sprinkling of holy water.

  363. There's no priest standing over him

  364. reciting incantations.

  365. Just a simple command,

  366. but firm command

  367. that Jesus gives.

  368. He says,

  369. Be quiet and come out of them.

  370. And we see that demons recognize

  371. Jesus' authority over them.

  372. Not only that,

  373. but they respond in immediate.

  374. They have to respond

  375. in immediate obedience.

  376. Verse 26,

  377. Throwing him into convulsions,

  378. the unclean spirit cried out

  379. with a loud voice

  380. and came out of him.

  381. And just like that,

  382. the demon has to be obedient to Christ.

  383. His authority and his rule

  384. are too much to overcome.

  385. So it's important for us to understand

  386. because we often think of spiritual warfare

  387. like dualism.

  388. Dualism is what we see

  389. in a lot of our stories

  390. and a lot of our movies

  391. that we come to

  392. where,

  393. like in Star Wars,

  394. where you have

  395. the evil emperor

  396. who shocks people

  397. into submission.

  398. And you have this incredibly evil,

  399. just everybody under his control

  400. is incredibly evil.

  401. His sidekick,

  402. Darth Vader.

  403. And everything that's happening

  404. is just evil

  405. from their side of things.

  406. Then you come over

  407. to the light side

  408. and you have Luke Skywalker

  409. and the last remaining Jedi.

  410. And you have all the goodness

  411. and they're fighting for the good

  412. and trying to save the universe.

  413. And oftentimes in our stories

  414. you see this picture

  415. where you have the evil side

  416. and the dark side

  417. are equal and opposing forces

  418. that are going against each other.

  419. That's not what we see

  420. in the text of Scripture

  421. when it comes to spiritual warfare.

  422. This is not dualism.

  423. This is total domination.

  424. This is God supreme

  425. and Satan subordinate.

  426. God as the ruler of all things,

  427. demons subject to his rule.

  428. And when the time comes

  429. for Jesus to return,

  430. these guys are done.

  431. They're just done.

  432. You get the revelation

  433. and it's all over for them.

  434. Because the day will come

  435. when God says,

  436. enough is enough.

  437. We're moving forward

  438. with Operation Christ Return.

  439. And when that happens,

  440. Scriptures already told us

  441. that the God of peace

  442. will soon crush Satan

  443. under your feet.

  444. And on that day,

  445. whether rich or poor,

  446. whether angel or demon,

  447. whether lost or saved,

  448. every knee shall bow

  449. and every tongue confess

  450. that Jesus Christ is Lord.

  451. And our God will reign

  452. as He always has

  453. for the rest of eternity.

  454. And demons,

  455. they come into contact with Jesus

  456. and they know the authority

  457. that Jesus has.

  458. Verse 24 saying,

  459. What business do we have

  460. with each other,

  461. Jesus of Nazareth?

  462. Have you come to destroy us?

  463. And the demon recognizes

  464. Jesus' authority

  465. and His ultimate ability

  466. to destruct

  467. in the spiritual realm.

  468. This demon recognizes

  469. that Jesus has the power,

  470. if He wanted to,

  471. to destroy Him.

  472. And if that's not enough,

  473. he further declares,

  474. I know who you are,

  475. the Holy One of God.

  476. And I love the fact,

  477. and hopefully you'll get this with me,

  478. but I love the fact that demons,

  479. every ounce that is within them,

  480. they hate and loathe

  481. everything about Jesus.

  482. And yet at the same time,

  483. they have no,

  484. they are powerless

  485. to do anything apart

  486. from His sovereign authority,

  487. His sovereign command.

  488. It's just amazing.

  489. It's good to be on Team Jesus.

  490. It's good to be

  491. on this side of the cross

  492. and to be able to see

  493. the power and the authority

  494. that He has.

  495. Satan can do nothing

  496. in this world.

  497. The minions,

  498. His minions can do

  499. nothing in this world to you

  500. apart from God's divine authority

  501. and apart from what God says

  502. that they can do.

  503. Satan is a lion,

  504. according to 1 Peter 5,

  505. but he is a lion

  506. that is on a leash.

  507. And the leash is being held

  508. by the Son of God

  509. who takes away

  510. the sins of the world.

  511. It would be one thing

  512. if this just happened one time,

  513. but it doesn't.

  514. This happens over and over

  515. and over again

  516. where Jesus encounters demons

  517. and spiritual warfare

  518. and over and over

  519. and over again

  520. they submit to His authority.

  521. I can't help but see

  522. a contrast here.

  523. I want you to think

  524. about this with me.

  525. Demons have fear

  526. because of their belief.

  527. They know who Jesus is

  528. and they're scared

  529. out of their minds.

  530. They believe in

  531. and know that Jesus

  532. has authority

  533. and that's why they're scared.

  534. But we're the opposite.

  535. Oftentimes, not always,

  536. but oftentimes we fear

  537. because of our disbelief.

  538. And if we could only realize

  539. what the demons realize

  540. about Jesus,

  541. then we can experience

  542. security

  543. and understand

  544. that we have no reason

  545. to fear.

  546. He is the Son of God

  547. who takes away

  548. the sin of the world.

  549. He came to us.

  550. He walked among us.

  551. He ate and drank

  552. like we do.

  553. He had a power over disease.

  554. He had a power over nature.

  555. And ultimately,

  556. He sacrificed Himself

  557. on the cross

  558. so that we can come

  559. into communion.

  560. We can have a relationship

  561. with Him.

  562. And that same God

  563. is holding us

  564. and we can feel safe

  565. and secure

  566. in His arms.

  567. You know,

  568. this kind of reminds me

  569. of this whole concept

  570. of us not really

  571. having that faith

  572. in Christ.

  573. It reminds me

  574. of when He was

  575. with His disciples

  576. and they were out

  577. on a boat

  578. and the storm came

  579. and the waves were rising

  580. and the wind

  581. was coming up upon them.

  582. And Jesus was asleep

  583. in the boat

  584. as you recall.

  585. And the disciples,

  586. they are just rightfully

  587. just like out of their minds

  588. scared.

  589. They're just scared

  590. out of their minds.

  591. And Jesus wakens

  592. and He calms the sea.

  593. He rebukes the wind

  594. and the waves

  595. and says,

  596. Be calm.

  597. And immediately,

  598. nature calms

  599. when He speaks.

  600. And then,

  601. He rebukes the disciples

  602. and says,

  603. O ye of little faith,

  604. there's been a time

  605. in my life

  606. when I've been scared

  607. out of my mind

  608. just like the disciples.

  609. It was on Palm Sunday,

  610. 1994.

  611. My brother was there

  612. with me.

  613. My brother's sitting

  614. in the back

  615. and his family

  616. and my dad

  617. and they're all here.

  618. It's good to have them

  619. here this morning

  620. with us.

  621. If you disbelieve

  622. anything about this story,

  623. go and talk to my brother

  624. afterwards

  625. because he was there.

  626. It was me and my brother

  627. and my mom

  628. were at home.

  629. Anybody remember 1994?

  630. Anybody from Lumpkin County

  631. remember what happened

  632. in 1994

  633. on Palm Sunday?

  634. Maybe not.

  635. Craig remembers.

  636. Okay.

  637. That day,

  638. Lumpkin County

  639. was ravaged

  640. by a series of tornadoes.

  641. Our house

  642. was the first

  643. of the tornadoes

  644. to come through.

  645. We were eating

  646. a late lunch that day

  647. and we usually

  648. ate around noon

  649. but we were eating

  650. more like 2 o'clock

  651. that day,

  652. I believe.

  653. and we were

  654. finishing up with lunch.

  655. We had observed

  656. all throughout the day

  657. how strange

  658. the weather was.

  659. It was just

  660. a weird weather day.

  661. We saw the clouds

  662. racing and sometimes

  663. they were kind of

  664. colliding into each other

  665. which by the way,

  666. if you see that,

  667. it's time to get

  668. to the basement

  669. because,

  670. I mean,

  671. that's a good sign

  672. that there's tornado

  673. weather coming.

  674. And we even made

  675. the comment that day

  676. that hey,

  677. this looks like

  678. a lot like tornado weather.

  679. just to give you

  680. kind of a picture

  681. of how weird things were,

  682. there's a cloud

  683. we observed that day.

  684. There's a cloud

  685. up in the sky

  686. that just had

  687. lightning just

  688. surging through it.

  689. It was like

  690. unending lightning

  691. just surging

  692. through this cloud.

  693. Never seen anything

  694. like it before

  695. in my life.

  696. So we already knew

  697. how strange

  698. the weather was

  699. that day

  700. and so Craig

  701. goes out on the porch

  702. and out into our yard

  703. just kind of observing

  704. the weather

  705. one more time

  706. and we'd already

  707. been out there

  708. several times

  709. but he went out there again

  710. and he's kind of

  711. looking over to the east

  712. and kind of

  713. looking up to the clouds

  714. just kind of,

  715. man,

  716. this is so strange

  717. and he looks

  718. toward the west

  719. to our next door

  720. neighbor's house

  721. and there was a tornado

  722. just standing there

  723. moving toward us

  724. and beginning to rip apart

  725. our next door neighbor's house.

  726. Now,

  727. I want you to know that

  728. because you need to know

  729. why my brother

  730. was acting

  731. the way that he was.

  732. He's not normally

  733. scared of a lot of

  734. things but he came

  735. bolting in the house

  736. yelling at the top

  737. of his lungs

  738. get down to the basement

  739. everybody get down

  740. to the basement

  741. and so he and I

  742. it was the three of us

  743. in the house at the time

  744. it was my mom

  745. me and my brother

  746. and my dad was

  747. somewhere else

  748. serving in the community

  749. but the three of us

  750. were there

  751. and so Craig and I

  752. just bolt down

  753. and we get to the bottom

  754. of the basement

  755. and we're standing there

  756. looking at each other

  757. where's mom?

  758. Mom was not down there yet.

  759. I don't know how

  760. she could have missed

  761. him yelling

  762. get down to the basement

  763. but somehow she did

  764. and apparently we found

  765. out later that she

  766. was upstairs

  767. turning lights off

  768. and closing the garage

  769. door while a tornado

  770. was barreling

  771. towards our house.

  772. So,

  773. we get up to the top

  774. of the stairs

  775. and we said

  776. mom get downstairs

  777. and we get down there

  778. and by the time

  779. that we got to the basement

  780. we're sitting

  781. on the basement floor

  782. we're kind of

  783. in a triangle

  784. huddled together

  785. we start to see

  786. the effects

  787. of this thing.

  788. I didn't see

  789. the tornado

  790. personally

  791. my brother did

  792. and so

  793. this is how

  794. is it okay

  795. if I tell them

  796. how you're reacting?

  797. So,

  798. he's going

  799. oh no

  800. look at the trees

  801. let me tell you

  802. what the trees

  803. were doing

  804. the trees

  805. would be sucked

  806. toward the tornado

  807. they'd be blown over

  808. and then they'd suck

  809. back and just

  810. snap off

  811. I'm talking about

  812. big trees

  813. just snapping off

  814. and flying away

  815. I've never seen

  816. power like this

  817. before in my life

  818. just sheer power

  819. of wind

  820. and he's going

  821. oh no

  822. look at the trees

  823. oh no

  824. look at the

  825. look there goes

  826. the fence

  827. and I mean

  828. he was just

  829. like we're observing

  830. everything

  831. we're looking

  832. out the windows

  833. seeing everything

  834. that's going on

  835. it is utter chaos

  836. mom's to my right

  837. and she's going

  838. it's going to be okay

  839. it's going to be okay

  840. it's going to be okay

  841. and then Mr. Future Preacher

  842. man I'm over here

  843. in my corner

  844. of the triangle

  845. going let's pray

  846. let's pray

  847. let's pray

  848. and finally

  849. I said

  850. let's pray

  851. now

  852. and I just began

  853. to spill out words

  854. out of my mouth

  855. I don't remember

  856. everything

  857. that I prayed

  858. but I remember

  859. specifically asking

  860. that God would place

  861. a dome of protection

  862. over our family

  863. and over our house

  864. after I got done

  865. praying

  866. Craig prayed

  867. and mom prayed

  868. and by that time

  869. the tornado

  870. had moved on

  871. and we could see

  872. outside

  873. that there was

  874. no more wind

  875. at least there

  876. were no more

  877. effects of the wind

  878. at the time

  879. so we thought

  880. well hey

  881. we're okay

  882. right now

  883. at least we're alive

  884. and we're very grateful

  885. and thankful for that

  886. we walked up

  887. the steps

  888. from our basement

  889. our basement door

  890. kind of opens up

  891. into the foyer area

  892. of our house

  893. and we saw that

  894. for the most part

  895. our house is intact

  896. and we're grateful

  897. again

  898. all over again

  899. that we didn't know

  900. what we were going to see

  901. when we went up

  902. to the next floor

  903. we had no idea

  904. if we had a house

  905. above us

  906. or if we had a roof

  907. above us

  908. or if there was

  909. anything there

  910. but we're grateful

  911. that at least

  912. our house was intact

  913. so we walked

  914. out our front door

  915. and we looked

  916. to the west

  917. to that house

  918. that Craig saw

  919. with a tornado

  920. hitting it

  921. at that time

  922. and it's leveled

  923. all but one wall

  924. the only one wall

  925. was left standing

  926. in that house

  927. and we realized

  928. how fortunate

  929. we were at the time

  930. it wasn't until

  931. a couple weeks later

  932. when somebody

  933. came into my dad's pharmacy

  934. and told him

  935. what they saw

  936. that we realized

  937. the gravity

  938. of what happened

  939. that day

  940. because they said

  941. when I saw it

  942. coming through

  943. your neighborhood

  944. I saw the tornado

  945. split into two

  946. different funnels

  947. it's a phenomenon

  948. that they call

  949. the double vortex tornado

  950. and they'll split

  951. into two different funnels

  952. there's a funnel

  953. there's damage

  954. on the back side

  955. of our house

  956. in the backyard

  957. there's damage

  958. to the lot

  959. across from us

  960. now there were

  961. some damage

  962. to our house

  963. but structurally

  964. speaking

  965. it stands today

  966. like it stood

  967. before the tornado

  968. structurally speaking

  969. it was pretty sound

  970. and the only way

  971. to explain it

  972. is that the God

  973. who can calm

  974. the wind

  975. and the waves

  976. place a dome of protection

  977. over our house

  978. and he is sovereign

  979. there is nothing

  980. that we should fear

  981. and let me tell you

  982. something

  983. even if we had

  984. died that day

  985. our eternal security

  986. rests in Christ Jesus

  987. so either way

  988. no matter what

  989. had happened that day

  990. we were secure

  991. in him

  992. so whom shall we fear

  993. Paul puts it this way

  994. he says

  995. for I am convinced

  996. that neither

  997. death nor life

  998. nor angels

  999. nor demons

  1000. neither the present

  1001. nor the future

  1002. nor any powers

  1003. neither height

  1004. nor depth

  1005. nor anything else

  1006. in all of creation

  1007. will be able

  1008. to separate us

  1009. from the love

  1010. that is in

  1011. Christ Jesus

  1012. our Lord

  1013. we have nothing

  1014. and no one

  1015. to fear

  1016. because Jesus

  1017. has all authority

  1018. last but not least

  1019. what we see

  1020. in this passage

  1021. and I want us

  1022. to see this clearly

  1023. is that Jesus'

  1024. authority

  1025. his sovereign

  1026. authority

  1027. leads us to

  1028. total allegiance

  1029. to him

1030. I'm going to say that

  1031. again because

  1032. that's kind of wordy

  1033. I didn't know

1034. how else to word it

  1035. but Jesus' sovereign

  1036. authority

  1037. leads us to

  1038. total allegiance

  1039. to him

  1040. this particular passage

  1041. is bookended

  1042. with the people's

  1043. amazement of Jesus

  1044. they were amazed

  1045. first by his teaching

1046. and then at the end

  1047. of this passage

  1048. they were amazed

  1049. by his authority

  1050. over demons

  1051. this word amazed

  1052. here in the text

  1053. is a compound form

  1054. of the Greek verb

  1055. pleso

  1056. and what pleso means

  1057. it literally means

  1058. to strike

  1059. or to smite

  1060. and so we're

  1061. talking about

  1062. a very strong

  1063. word with

  1064. very strong

  1065. meaning here

  1066. so the picture

  1067. is here

  1068. is that

  1069. the people

  1070. weren't just

  1071. amazed

  1072. they were

  1073. dumbfounded

  1074. they were

  1075. astonished

  1076. they were

  1077. shocked

  1078. in other words

  1079. Jesus may have

  1080. caused a few

  1081. jaws to drop

  1082. that day

  1083. what we know

  1084. for sure

  1085. and don't miss

  1086. this is that

  1087. people who were

  1088. there that day

  1089. were compelled

  1090. to go and

  1091. spread the news

  1092. about him

  1093. all over the

  1094. region of Galilee

  1095. you see one

  1096. thing Jesus

  1097. never had to

  1098. do was to

  1099. beg people

  1100. for followers

  1101. or to follow

  1102. him

  1103. he never had

  1104. to beg

  1105. people to

  1106. spread the

  1107. news about

  1108. him

  1109. he was just

  1110. amazing

  1111. he amazed

  1112. people

  1113. and in their

  1114. amazement

  1115. of Jesus

  1116. they went

  1117. out and

  1118. they shared

  1119. the truth

  1120. about him

  1121. the good

  1122. news

  1123. about him

  1124. last week

  1125. we saw him

  1126. approach four

  1127. fishermen

  1128. he said

  1129. follow me

  1130. there's no

  1131. begging

  1132. there's no

  1133. pleading

  1134. he just said

  1135. follow me

  1136. and it says

  1137. they immediately

  1138. dropped their

  1139. nets and

  1140. followed him

  1141. the picture is

  1142. the same

  1143. this week

  1144. Jesus didn't

  1145. ask him

  1146. people to

  1147. spread the

  1148. word about

  1149. him

  1150. they just

  1151. do it

  1152. out of

  1153. their

  1154. amazement

  1155. their

  1156. amazement

  1157. led them

  1158. to action

  1159. and those

  1160. followers

  1161. told other

  1162. followers

  1163. and those

  1164. followers

  1165. told other

  1166. followers

  1167. until Jesus

  1168. just has

  1169. these crowds

  1170. of people

  1171. who are

  1172. following him

  1173. around

  1174. everywhere

  1175. so brothers

  1176. and sisters

  1177. in here

  1178. this morning

  1179. I exhort

  1180. you

  1181. if Christ

  1182. has done

  1183. anything

  1184. amazing

  1185. in your

  1186. life

  1187. if you

  1188. are counted

  1189. among the

  1190. redeemed

  1191. then go

  1192. out and

  1193. share

  1194. what he

  1195. has done

  1196. for you

  1197. there are

  1198. plenty of

  1199. people all

  1200. over north

  1201. Georgia

  1202. and all

  1203. over the

  1204. state of

  1205. Georgia

  1206. and all

  1207. over the

  1208. United States

  1209. and to the

  1210. ends of

  1211. the earth

  1212. there are

  1213. people who

  1214. do not

  1215. yet know

  1216. Jesus

  1217. as their

  1218. Lord and

  1219. Savior

  1220. there is a

  1221. mission field

  1222. right here

  1223. where we are

  1224. in northeast

  1225. Georgia

  1226. so if you

  1227. are counted

  1228. among the

  1229. redeemed

  1230. it's time

  1231. that we

  1232. act as if

  1233. we're redeemed

  1234. and out of

  1235. the joy

  1236. that overflows

  1237. in us

  1238. through what

  1239. Christ has

  1240. done for us

  1241. it's time

  1242. that we go

  1243. and share

  1244. that with

  1245. our lost

  1246. people

  1247. to share

  1248. it with

  1249. our neighbors

  1250. to proclaim

  1251. it in your

  1252. workplace

  1253. to proclaim

  1254. him in your

  1255. schools

  1256. or on your

  1257. campuses

  1258. to proclaim

  1259. him to

  1260. the nations

  1261. he is

  1262. worthy

  1263. to be on

  1264. our minds

  1265. he is

  1266. worthy

  1267. to be

  1268. the topic

  1269. of our

  1270. conversations

  1271. more than

  1272. football

  1273. and more

  1274. than TV

  1275. shows

  1276. and more

  1277. than politics

  1278. he is

  1279. worthy

  1280. Jesus

  1281. is worthy

  1282. may his

  1283. name be

  1284. glorified

  1285. as we go

  1286. out from

  1287. here

  1288. and as we

  1289. go into

  1290. our communities

  1291. and we go

  1292. to the various

  1293. spheres of

  1294. influence that

  1295. we have

  1296. may his

  1297. name

  1298. increase

  1299. because of

  1300. our

  1301. amazement

  1302. in him

  1303. and because

  1304. we are

  1305. willing

  1306. to share

  1307. the gospel

  1308. with a

  1309. lost

  1310. and dying

  1311. world

  1312. let's pray

  1313. together

  1314. together
