  1. Good morning. Welcome to Christ's family.

  2. If you will please turn in your Bibles to Mark chapter 1.

    Mark 1 chapter mention

  3. ! We're going to be reading from verses 29 to 39 this morning.

  4. !

  5. That which can be mimicked. Obviously we're not God in the flesh.

  6. But what can be mimicked of Christ, we ought to mimic Him as much as we can, if we abide in Him.

  7. So, an encouragement as we study through the Gospel, both corporately and individually.

  8. Whenever you see things of Christ's life that you can replicate, strive to do so.

  9. Really strive to do so, because that is the command of Scripture,

  10. and that is our great honor as Christians, is to reflect our God, Christ.

  11. And this is a reminder of the immediate context where we've been.

  12. Nathan, the first sermon that we preached on this series, he preached on Mark 1.1,

  13. which is the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

  14. And the Gospel, as he showed us there, was a reference to Isaiah 40, the coming of the King.

  15. So, whenever we say the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God,

  16. he's not talking about the crucifixion quite yet.

  17. The pinnacle of the Gospel of Mark is the crucifixion of Christ, is death, burial, and resurrection.

  18. But, thus far, we're talking about the coming Kingdom and the coming of Christ.

  19. In the first nine chapters of Mark, Mark really desires and strives

  20. to show us Christ as the powerful Son of God,

  21. having authority over everything, as we're going to look at and see here in just a moment.

  22. And in the last couple chapters, Mark really slows down,

  23. because as everybody has pointed out when they've preached,

  24. Mark uses the word immediately quite often to hurry the narrative along.

  25. But, the last couple chapters are really shown,

  26. they really show Christ as the suffering servant who dies for sins.

  27. So, with that immediate context in mind,

  28. let's also look at the context of this actual chapter.

  29. Two weeks ago, Clay preached,

  30. and he showed us Christ's absolute and total authority over man,

  31. in that he said to the disciples,

  32. Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.

  33. He had authority over their will.

  34. They obeyed, and they complied to his command.

  35. Last week, we saw Kyle show us,

  36. we had Kyle show us,

  37. his absolute authority over the spiritual realm,

  38. in that there was a demon-possessed man in the synagogue,

  39. in that he cast the demon out,

  40. and the demon had no choice but to obey.

  41. Even though it wanted to rebel, obviously, as we see that,

  42. he told it to be quiet,

  43. and it still made a loud noise when it left.

  44. And this week, we're going to see quite a few things.

  45. So, let's read our text.

  46. Mark 1, 29-39 reads as follows,

  47. And immediately after they came out of the synagogue,

  48. they came into the house of Simon and Andrew,

  49. with James and John.

  50. Now Simon's mother-in-law was lying sick with a fever,

  51. and immediately they spoke to Jesus about her.

  52. And he came to her and raised her up,

  53. taking her by the hand,

  54. and the fever left her,

  55. and she waited on them.

  56. When evening came, after the sun had set,

  57. they began bringing to him all who were ill,

  58. and those who were demon-possessed.

  59. And the whole city had gathered at the door,

  60. and he healed many who were ill,

  61. with various diseases,

  62. and cast out many demons.

  63. And he was not permitting the demons to speak,

  64. because they knew who he was.

  65. In the early morning, while it was still dark,

  66. Jesus got up, left the house,

  67. and went away to a secluded place,

  68. and was praying there.

  69. Simon and his companions searched for him.

  70. They found him and said to him,

  71. Everyone is looking for you.

  72. And he said to them,

  73. Let us go somewhere else to the towns nearby,

  74. so that I may preach the gospel there also.

  75. For that is why I came for.

  76. And he went into their synagogues,

  77. through all of Galilee,

  78. preaching and casting out the demons.

  79. Let's pray.

  80. Dear Heavenly Father,

  81. we thank you for Scripture.

  82. We thank you that you've given us

  83. four accounts of the life of Christ,

  84. and that we're working through one of them.

  85. Father, I pray as we see your

  86. just absolute sovereign authority

  87. over all realms today,

  88. Father,

  89. and we see the need for prayer,

  90. Father,

  91. that we would be effectual hearers,

  92. and that we do what the Word says,

  93. Father.

  94. As Wes just talked about,

  95. that the miracle of hearing,

  96. and response,

  97. and faith would occur,

  98. Father,

  99. that we would have faith,

  100. that this is the Word of God being spoken,

  101. and that we would have repentance,

  102. Father,

  103. that we would conform ourselves

  104. to what it says,

  105. God.

  106. Father,

  107. Father,

  108. we ask that you would move spirit,

  109. if you don't move,

  110. all is vain.

  111. We praise you,

  112. and we worship you,

  113. and we pray all this in the name

  114. and glory of Christ Jesus.

  115. Amen.

  116. All right.

  117. So,

  118. our text is broken into three paragraphs,

  119. I'm sure in all of your Bibles,

  120. at least it should be.

  121. And it says,

  122. And immediately after they came out

  123. of the synagogue,

  124. they came into the house of Simon

  125. and Andrew with James and John.

  126. So what Mark has done,

  127. he's established that we are

  128. in the same day as Kyle preached

  129. about last week.

  130. It's still the Sabbath.

  131. Teaching had occurred,

  132. demon had been cast out,

  133. and then immediately

  134. after they left the synagogue,

  135. they went to Peter's house.

  136. And upon going to the house,

  137. they find out that

  138. Peter's mother-in-law is sick,

  139. that she has a,

  140. Luke,

  141. the physician records

  142. in Luke chapter 4

    Luke 4 chapter mention

  143. that she had a high fever,

  144. and that she was sick

  145. to the point where Christ

  146. had to stand over her

  147. because she wasn't able to sit up.

  148. So we see that she is

  149. severely,

  150. severely sick

  151. in this text.

  152. Maybe not super severe,

  153. we don't really know,

  154. but the text came to indicate

  155. that she was really sick.

  156. And we see that Christ

  157. has authority

  158. over the natural realm.

  159. Before we get there though,

  160. in the Gospel of Luke

  161. in the fourth chapter,

  162. Luke the physician,

  163. the Gospel writer,

  164. had already told us

  165. that up until this point,

  166. Christ had already

  167. performed many miracles

  168. and healing.

  169. So we only have

  170. the casting out of a demon

  171. and the calling of disciples

  172. according to this Gospel account,

  173. but according to the Gospel of Luke,

  174. they had seen many,

  175. many,

  176. many miracles

  177. already occur.

  178. So,

  179. obviously they had trust

  180. in the authority

  181. and the power of Christ

  182. and His ability to do

  183. as He pleased

  184. in the natural realm

  185. as well as the spiritual realm.

  186. So,

  187. as we've looked at,

  188. and the emphasis

  189. that Mark is making here

  190. is he's wanting to show

  191. the absolute and complete

  192. and total authority

  193. of who Christ is.

  194. Like we just said,

  195. He has authority over man

  196. as we saw

  197. whenever Clay preached

  198. and He told the disciples

  199. to come.

  200. He has authority

  201. over the spiritual realm,

  202. over demons,

  203. those who rebel against Him

  204. from the beginning,

  205. in that He casts them out

  206. and they have no choice

  207. but to obey.

  208. And we see here

  209. that He has authority

  210. over the physical realm as well.

  211. Look what happens

  212. in verse 31 with me.

  213. And it says,

  214. And He came to her

  215. and raised her up,

  216. taking her by the hand,

  217. and the fever left her

  218. and she waited on them.

  219. So Christ came,

  220. simply takes her by the hand,

  221. raises her up,

  222. and she is completely healed.

  223. I'm sure everyone in here

  224. has had a fever

  225. of various kinds

  226. and whenever you have a fever,

  227. you feel like drunk.

  228. And even after the fever's

  229. kind of gone

  230. and the fever's gone down,

  231. you still feel ill,

  232. your body's still recuperating

  233. and recovering.

  234. But notice how Christ

  235. has healed her

  236. in such a way

  237. that she was immediately

  238. able to wait on them.

  239. And the wait on them

  240. in this context

  241. is more than likely

  242. that she served a Sabbath meal.

  243. They had a special meal

  244. on the Sabbath,

  245. the Jews did.

  246. And I'll remind you

  247. that they didn't have microwaves

  248. and freezers

  249. and refrigerators

  250. and ovens back then.

  251. So it was quite an ordeal

  252. to get fresh food

  253. and to prepare a meal

  254. for four burly fishermen

  255. because we see that

  256. Peter and his brother

  257. and James and John

  258. had gone in there.

  259. So four burly fishermen,

  260. whoever else lived in the house,

  261. and herself.

  262. So that was quite a meal

  263. to prepare.

  264. So there's a great joy

  265. in seeing that Christ

  266. has the authority

  267. over the natural realm

  268. and that he is able

  269. to heal so much so

  270. to the point where

  271. there's not even

  272. a recovery phase,

  273. but she is immediately well,

  274. automatically.

  275. And something that's

  276. really interesting

  277. and worth noting

  278. in the text,

  279. I'm sorry,

  280. in Luke chapter 4,

    Luke 4 chapter mention

  281. is that Christ rebuked

  282. the fever with a word

  283. in Luke chapter 4.

    Luke 4 chapter mention

  284. So we see then

  285. that Christ has the authority

  286. and power over

  287. the natural realm,

  288. not just in terms of

  289. how God has blessed us today

  290. with various types of medicines,

  291. surgery of various sorts,

  292. but by his word

  293. he's able to cure.

  294. And what's really cool

  295. is whenever we see

  296. the correlation here,

  297. we see that in 115

  298. of the Gospel of Mark

  299. that Christ spoke

  300. to the disciples

  301. and told them to follow

  302. when they did.

  303. We see that Christ

  304. spoke to the demon,

  305. told him to be quiet,

  306. and cast out,

  307. and it was.

  308. And we see here,

  309. whenever we look at

  310. the parallel accounts,

  311. that Christ rebuked the fever

  312. and by his word

  313. he had absolute authority.

  314. In the same way

  315. that Hebrews talks about

  316. that he sustains all things

  317. by the word of his power,

  318. the word of God

  319. is powerful,

  320. both the Bible

  321. as well as Christ's authority.

  322. And one thing

  323. that we should note

  324. from the text

  325. that we should pull

  326. from the disciples

  327. seeing as we are

  328. disciples of Christ

  329. is the fact that

  330. they had seen

  331. Christ's authority,

  332. they had seen

  333. his ability to heal,

  334. his ability to cast out demons.

  335. These are miraculous things,

  336. by the way,

  337. I'm sure you all deduce that,

  338. but these are really big deals.

  339. There's things that hadn't happened

  340. for 400 years,

  341. more than that actually,

  342. since the days of Elijah.

  343. And he's speaking with authority,

  344. and they had noticed

  345. all these things,

  346. and let us note

  347. in verse 30 what it says.

  348. It says,

  349. Now Simon's mother-in-law

  350. was lying sick with the fever,

  351. and immediately

  352. they spoke to Jesus about her.

  353. The first thing

  354. that disciples did

  355. whenever they had a problem

  356. in their life,

  357. a situation occur,

  358. they didn't rely on themselves

  359. or anything like that.

  360. They immediately went to Christ.

  361. They went and spoke to Christ.

  362. I'm not saying this is prayer,

  363. because Christ was there,

  364. so they probably spoke to him.

  365. But we nowadays

  366. have the gift of prayer.

  367. And we would do well

  368. to learn,

  369. like the disciples did,

  370. because of who Christ is,

  371. because of his authority,

  372. to immediately speak to Christ

  373. in any temptation or trial,

  374. whether it be sickness,

  375. financial,

  376. temptation,

  377. in terms of being led to sin,

  378. being led to,

  379. in various ways.

  380. So we would do well

  381. to learn,

  382. as the disciples did,

  383. to look at the authority of Christ,

  384. because he is absolutely authoritative.

  385. He has sovereign dominion

  386. over all the areas

  387. that he had created,

  388. over both man

  389. in his own little realm,

  390. the whole nature,

  391. and the demonic forces.

  392. And I've repeated this

  393. like four times now,

  394. because it is that significant,

  395. that he has absolute authority

  396. over every single realm.

  397. And the disciples,

  398. knowing that Christ was kind

  399. and loving,

  400. they came to him

  401. knowing that he would help.

  402. Now,

  403. let me qualify this real fast.

  404. We see two natures

  405. of our Savior's office.

  406. We see both his nature

  407. as Savior,

  408. in that he was kind,

  409. and willing to help.

  410. And we see both,

  411. and we see also

  412. his nature as Lord,

  413. in that he was able to do

  414. what he wanted to do.

  415. So we see that

  416. when something was brought to him,

  417. he was kind enough

  418. to hear their petition,

  419. he was kind enough

  420. to hear their request,

  421. and to go and do it.

  422. And he had the authority

  423. and the absolute ability

  424. to do it.

  425. So,

  426. those are the two main points

  427. from the text.

  428. And there's a third point,

  429. which I think is very significant,

  430. that we draw from verse 31.

  431. It says,

  432. And he came to her

  433. and raised her up

  434. and took her by the hand

  435. and the fever left her

  436. and she waited on them.

  437. The last five words there,

  438. and she waited on them.

  439. What the Holy Spirit is doing

  440. through Mark

  441. in this gospel

  442. is he is showing us

  443. a proper response

  444. to those who have been

  445. touched by Christ,

  446. for those who have been

  447. moved by Christ.

  448. It is to wait on them.

  449. And there's two

  450. kind of branches

  451. within this them.

  452. There is obviously

  453. she waited on Christ.

  454. In this situation,

  455. as I said earlier,

  456. she probably prepared

  457. a Sabbath meal.

  458. She probably prepared

  459. food for them to eat

  460. and something for them to drink

  461. because it had been

  462. a long day at that point.

  463. Christ had been teaching,

  464. casting out demons,

  465. walking around and stuff.

  466. So we see that

  467. she waited on Christ

  468. and we also see

  469. that she waited on them,

  470. meaning the disciples

  471. and those who were with him.

  472. In the same way today,

  473. us who have been

  474. touched by Christ,

  475. us who have been healed,

  476. because we've been healed

  477. in a far greater way, beloved.

  478. She was healed of a fever.

  479. We had sin-sick souls.

  480. We were dead in our sin

  481. and our trespasses,

  482. rebelling against God,

  483. completely and totally

  484. against him.

  485. We had a malady

  486. that wrath was due us.

  487. The wrath of God

  488. was to be poured upon us.

  489. So we have a much greater healing

  490. than she did in this scene.

  491. We have been healed

  492. from our sin,

  493. both in terms of

  494. the wrath of God

  495. and from the bondage to it.

  496. So if she was so eager

  497. to wait on them

  498. in the text as we see

  499. that she immediately

  500. waited on them,

  501. should not we

  502. who have been cured

  503. and forgiven of so much more

  504. seek to serve our Christ

  505. in all ways that are possible?

  506. Beloved,

  507. there are many, many ways

  508. that one serves the church.

  509. Ms. Barbara,

  510. I told you I was going to mention you today.

  511. Ms. Barbara is very diligent.

  512. If you ever show up

  513. around like 9 o'clock

  514. and just watch her,

  515. she does like everything around here.

  516. It's crazy.

  517. It's pretty awesome.

  518. But in all seriousness though,

  519. there are many, many ways

  520. that you can serve the church.

  521. Romans 12, 6-8 reads,

  522. Since we have gifts that defer

  523. according to the grace given to us,

  524. each of us is to exercise them accordingly.

  525. If prophecy,

  526. according to the proportion of his faith,

  527. is service and serving,

  528. or he who teaches and is teaching,

  529. or he who exhorts and is exhortation,

  530. he who gives with liberty,

  531. he who leads with diligence,

  532. he who shows mercy with cheerfulness.

  533. So we see that Paul here

  534. is saying that the Spirit gives us

  535. many gifts in terms of

  536. how to serve the church.

  537. Perhaps God has given you

  538. some of the gift of preaching.

  539. Perhaps God has given you

  540. some of the gift of teaching.

  541. Perhaps God has given you

  542. the gift of music.

  543. Those are the more public things.

  544. There's also the things

  545. that no one sees.

  546. You know, the financing that occurs

  547. to keep everything running smoothly.

  548. The administrative aspect

  549. to keep everything planned.

  550. Even things as small as

  551. making the coffee in the morning.

  552. All these things are done

  553. and they bring us great fellowship.

  554. Think about it.

  555. The coffee seems like a small thing,

  556. but everybody's gathered

  557. around the coffee,

  558. drinking it,

  559. and enjoying fellowship.

  560. So all these different forms of service

  561. add to the church

  562. in a way that God has chosen.

  563. And an implication therein

  564. is that if you are not serving

  565. in a way that God has gifted you,

  566. then the body is neglected.

  567. The body is missing

  568. an aspect of service

  569. that it could have.

  570. And that is to the detriment of the body.

  571. But the greatest way,

  572. and above all else,

  573. the way that we can

  574. serve this body,

  575. serve the believers,

  576. serve the church,

  577. both visible,

  578. which means here in this congregation,

  579. and invisible,

  580. meaning the whole church,

  581. is through prayer.

  582. It is through praying for the service,

  583. praying for the worship,

  584. all aspects of it.

  585. The preaching,

  586. that God's word would be proclaimed

  587. through the hearing,

  588. as we've talked about

  589. several times already today,

  590. that the people that are here

  591. would respond in faith and truth

  592. to what the text shows.

  593. They pray for the singing aspect

  594. and the music,

  595. that God would be greatly glorified

  596. through the worship of His name

  597. and through the praise of His people.

  598. Pray for the Lord's Supper,

  599. that it would be the solemn

  600. and joyful event

  601. that it's meant to be.

  602. Pray for one another

  603. as we bear one another's burdens.

  604. The greatest service

  605. that you can do for the church

  606. is to pray.

  607. And that is a service

  608. that we can all do,

  609. that we are all gifted in.

  610. We all have the ability

  611. to sit down,

  612. get on our knees,

  613. lay down,

  614. have a pace,

  615. however you want to,

  616. to pray,

  617. and to pray for the beloved.

  618. So,

  619. don't tell me

  620. that you don't have the ability.

  621. Don't tell anybody

  622. that you don't have the ability.

  623. I think we're very blessed here

  624. with a body who does serve

  625. and serves very fervently

  626. in a lot of ways.

  627. And for that,

  628. I'm very thankful.

  629. I know Nathan is thankful.

  630. I've heard him say it many times.

  631. So,

  632. but if you're not serving,

  633. there are ways you can serve.

  634. And I would encourage you

  635. to seek them.

  636. And I know we have many teams here

  637. that do the audio,

  638. the service,

  639. and other stuff.

  640. Maybe Wes can make an announcement.

  641. I don't know.

  642. But,

  643. so,

  644. okay,

  645. so that concludes

  646. verses 29 through 31.

  647. We've seen that Christ

  648. has absolute authority,

  649. just to emphasize again,

  650. that the disciples

  651. had seen his absolute authority

  652. and felt comfortable

  653. coming to him

  654. with their request

  655. that they may be made known to him

  656. and that he may do

  657. as he pleases.

  658. And we see also

  659. that a proper reaction

  660. to being touched by Christ

  661. is to serve both him

  662. through the work of reconciliation,

  663. sharing Christ in the gospel,

  664. which is not exactly

  665. what this text says,

  666. but it's an implication,

  667. and also through various ways

  668. of serving the church,

  669. both physically and spiritually.

  670. So,

  671. let's look at verses 32 through 34.

  672. It says,

  673. when evening came,

  674. after the sun had set,

  675. they began bringing to him

  676. all who were ill

  677. and those who were demon-possessed.

  678. And the whole city

  679. had gathered at the door,

  680. and he healed many who were ill

  681. with various diseases

  682. and cast out many demons.

  683. And he was not permitting

  684. the demons to speak

  685. because they knew who he was.

  686. So,

  687. verse 32 starts off

  688. with a kind of interesting phrase.

  689. It says,

  690. when evening came,

  691. and after the sun had set,

  692. they began bringing.

  693. And the reason this was so

  694. was because you weren't allowed

  695. to carry anyone or anything

  696. on the Sabbath.

  697. In the Gospel of Luke,

  698. in the 14th,

  699. sorry,

  700. the 13th chapter,

  701. in the 14th verse,

  702. one of the leaders of the synagogues

  703. rebuked some Jews

  704. who had brought someone

  705. to be healed by Christ.

  706. And he's saying,

  707. there's six days

  708. where work can be done.

  709. Why do it on this day?

  710. So, obviously,

  711. the people had been taught

  712. that doing anything

  713. that was like that on the Sabbath

  714. was a negative thing

  715. that shouldn't be done.

  716. So,

  717. they waited until the sun

  718. had gone down,

  719. and the reason that was

  720. was because the Jews

  721. didn't understand days

  722. as we do

  723. from 12 a.m.

  724. to 12 a.m.

  725. They understood days

  726. as from sundown to sundown.

  727. So,

  728. whenever the sun had went down

  729. on the day of the Sabbath,

  730. which would have been a Saturday,

  731. not a Sunday,

  732. by the way,

  733. just so you all know

  734. from Jewish culture,

  735. the day would have been over.

  736. So,

  737. they would have been able

  738. to freely bring people

  739. to Christ.

  740. And let us see

  741. the kindness of Christ,

  742. and once again,

  743. the greatness and grandeur

  744. of who He is,

  745. in that He's able to heal

  746. all who are brought to Him.

  747. Mark records that

  748. He healed many.

  749. The Gospel of Luke

  750. in the 4th chapter

  751. records that He healed

  752. each one,

  753. indicating each

  754. individual person.

  755. So,

  756. we have a Savior

  757. who is both willing

  758. and able to heal.

  759. Now,

  760. I want to make a

  761. clarifying note here

  762. about healing.

  763. I'm not saying that

  764. God heals all the time.

  765. This is a very specific

  766. and special time

  767. in redemptive history

  768. when Christ was in person

  769. in the flesh.

  770. What we would do wise

  771. to learn

  772. is that though God

  773. can heal,

  774. He's in no way

  775. obligated to heal.

  776. He heals

  777. at His sovereign choice.

  778. At this time,

  779. in the Gospel,

  780. I'm sorry,

  781. the Gospel of Isaiah,

  782. in the Prophet Isaiah,

  783. we see that He had said

  784. that Christ came

  785. to take the infirmities

  786. of them all,

  787. meaning Israel.

  788. So,

  789. this was a very specific time

  790. and Christ was fulfilling

  791. a very specific role

  792. as the Messiah

  793. at this time period.

  794. So,

  795. though Christ is

  796. and though God is

  797. so able to heal,

  798. and I believe

  799. does so occasionally,

  800. that's a whole other sermon

  801. that can be discussed,

  802. He is not forced,

  803. His hand is not played

  804. by us to do so.

  805. So,

  806. if you go to Christ

  807. and pray for healing

  808. and it doesn't come,

  809. take comfort in knowing

  810. that God works out

  811. all things for the good

  812. of those who love Him

  813. and are called

  814. into His purposes.

  815. That if you are not healed,

  816. it is for your good.

  817. Even though it may seem

  818. bad to you initially,

  819. in the long run,

  820. you can take comfort

  821. in knowing that God,

  822. who is infinitely wise,

  823. infinitely knowledgeable,

  824. knows the future

  825. because He plans it,

  826. has decided that it is not

  827. good for you

  828. to be healed

  829. at this moment.

  830. So,

  831. let us observe

  832. though Christ did here,

  833. He is not obligated to today.

  834. even though

  835. many people would say

  836. He might be.

  837. Alright.

  838. So,

  839. let's move on

  840. to the last portion

  841. of our text.

  842. We've kind of gone

  843. through the first two portions

  844. relatively quickly

  845. because I want to spend

  846. the most time

  847. in the last portion.

  848. I think that's where

  849. the meat of what God

  850. has for us today

  851. is at.

  852. And it says,

  853. in the early morning

  854. while it was still dark,

  855. Jesus got up,

  856. left the house,

  857. and went away

  858. to a secluded place

  859. and was praying there.

  860. The first thing

  861. that Christ did

  862. with His day,

  863. the very first thing

  864. that this text shows us

  865. is that in the early morning

  866. while it was still dark,

  867. the KJV translated

  868. long before dawn,

  869. that Christ went out

  870. and He prayed.

  871. And what this shows us

  872. about Christ

  873. and His view of prayer

  874. is that He saw it

  875. as a priority.

  876. He is the first thing

  877. He wanted to do

  878. with His day.

  879. Before He saw the face

  880. of any man,

  881. before He had an encounter

  882. with any person

  883. or other thing,

  884. He wanted to see His Father.

  885. He wanted to see God the Father

  886. and interact with Him

  887. and be with Him.

  888. And also,

  889. it's really cool to see how,

  890. as we're kind of exploring

  891. a little bit here,

  892. that Christ's prayer

  893. was wedged in between

  894. His two forms of ministry.

  895. You know,

  896. He was healing

  897. and preaching the Gospel.

  898. Oh yeah,

  899. that's what I wanted

  900. to point out.

  901. Okay,

  902. real fast,

  903. backtrack with me

  904. for just a moment.

  905. This whole time,

  906. everything that we have

  907. been talking about,

  908. all the healings

  909. and miracles and whatnot,

  910. the emphasis is found

  911. in verse 15 of this chapter.

  912. It says,

  913. The time is fulfilled

  914. and the kingdom of God

  915. is at hand.

  916. Repent and believe the Gospel.

  917. So Christ's main focus

  918. in His ministry,

  919. as He's about to say,

  920. and we've already read once,

  921. was to preach the Gospel.

  922. And all these other things

  923. were happening

  924. because they were foretold

  925. that they would.

  926. But this whole time,

  927. while He's doing

  928. all these things,

  929. He has continued

  930. to preach the Gospel.

  931. that the kingdom of God

  932. is at hand,

  933. that God is literally there

  934. at that moment

  935. in terms of Christ

  936. and the Carnet,

  937. that the kingdom of God

  938. and that the people of God

  939. need to repent and believe.

  940. As we've already established,

  941. that the Gospel,

  942. in terms of Jesus Christ

  943. crucified,

  944. buried,

  945. and resurrected,

  946. obviously not occurred

  947. at this point.

  948. So He was telling them

  949. to repent,

  950. turn from their sins,

  951. forsake their evil,

  952. wicked ways,

  953. and believe unto God.

  954. So that is the context

  955. in which everything else

  956. is occurring.

  957. And we need to keep that in mind

  958. because it shows the focus

  959. of Christ's ministry.

  960. And it shows the focus

  961. when we do various kinds

  962. of ministry,

  963. what we will be doing

  964. and how we should be focusing.

  965. All right.

  966. I don't even know

  967. what I'm at in my notes.

  968. I haven't been using them.

  969. Anyways,

  970. let's continue on

  971. with verse 35.

  972. Yes,

  973. let us know,

  974. this gives back

  975. where we were.

  976. He went out early

  977. in the morning

  978. because He saw it

  979. as a priority in His day.

  980. It was the very essence

  981. of His day

  982. to start it off that way.

  983. He gave it the top priority

  984. because it was first.

  985. And also,

  986. while it was still dark,

  987. Jesus got up,

  988. left the house,

  989. and went to a secluded place.

  990. So why did Christ

  991. go to a secluded place?

  992. Why did He go to be alone?

  993. He went to be alone

  994. because He wanted

  995. to be alone with God.

  996. And I know that seems

  997. like an obvious statement

  998. based on what the text

  999. is saying,

1000. but we have to take

  1001. a step back

  1002. and think about

  1003. what that really means.

  1004. He didn't desire

  1005. to be interrupted

1006. by the distractions of men,

  1007. by the distractions

  1008. of our society.

1009. He sought to seek God first

1010. and for that to be

1011. a priority in His life.

1012. And He sought to do it wholly,

  1013. to be separated

  1014. from everybody else

  1015. and be wholly devoted

1016. to God in this time period.

  1017. What's interesting here

  1018. in the text,

  1019. the word secluded,

  1020. that's translated right here

  1021. in verse 12

  1022. and other places

  1023. in the text,

  1024. is also the word

  1025. that is translated wilderness.

  1026. So in verse 12

  1027. where it says,

  1028. immediately the Spirit

  1029. impelled Him

1030. to go into the wilderness,

  1031. the word wilderness there

  1032. is the same place

  1033. for secluded place here.

1034. So if you look at a map,

  1035. which I don't expect

  1036. you all to do,

1037. but if you look at a map,

1038. you'll see that there are

  1039. no wilderness,

  1040. how it's generally used

  1041. to describe in Capernaum

  1042. in the immediate area.

1043. So Jesus would have gone

  1044. a relatively good ways

  1045. away from the city

  1046. to get away

  1047. from everybody else,

  1048. to go and pray

1049. and be alone with God

  1050. and to spend time

  1051. with the Father.

1052. And let us also see,

  1053. wait,

  1054. whenever you look

1055. at the rest of Scripture,

1056. you see Christ's prayer life

  1057. continually.

  1058. Let us remember

  1059. that mark here

1060. in these first nine chapters

1061. and especially in chapter one

  1062. as he's continually

  1063. showed the authority

  1064. of Christ,

  1065. is showing Christ

  1066. as the God-man,

  1067. He who is powerful,

1068. who is far more able

  1069. than we are

1070. in our own human flesh,

1071. in our own human selves.

  1072. And yet Christ took

  1073. the time to pray.

  1074. It was His priority

  1075. in His life.

1076. And the lesson for us

  1077. as we looked at

  1078. 1 John 2, 6,

  1079. obviously we can't replicate

1080. the first part of the text

  1081. that we looked at.

1082. We don't have the ability

1083. to heal the way that Christ did.

1084. We don't have the ability

1085. to do all those miracles,

  1086. although Christ does do

  1087. miracles today still.

1088. We don't have the ability

  1089. like He did.

  1090. But we can replicate

1091. this aspect of His ministry,

  1092. of His life.

1093. We do have the ability

1094. to continue on in prayer

  1095. alone and making it

  1096. a priority.

  1097. So that's why

  1098. whenever we look at

  1099. what Christ is doing

  1100. here is significant

  1101. that we take note

  1102. and that we notice

  1103. what He does,

1104. so that way we can do it too.

1105. If Him who was perfect

  1106. sought to pray,

  1107. how much more so

1108. do we who are imperfect

  1109. need to?

  1110. Christ had no sins

  1111. to confess,

  1112. which would take up

1113. most of our time in prayer,

  1114. based on how sinful

  1115. we are.

  1116. He had no...

  1117. Well,

  1118. He didn't deal

  1119. with temptation

  1120. the same way

  1121. that we did,

1122. in that we have to

  1123. bitterly seek freedom

  1124. from temptation.

  1125. If Christ,

  1126. who was God

  1127. in the flesh,

  1128. sought the face

  1129. of His Father,

  1130. probably praying

  1131. for the ministry

  1132. that occurred

  1133. the day previous,

  1134. that the word

  1135. that had been sown

  1136. would remain,

  1137. that Satan

  1138. wouldn't snatch it up

1139. and be on good soil,

  1140. and praying for the

  1141. next day,

  1142. which was His preaching,

  1143. if He sought

  1144. so vigorously the Father

1145. as to make it a priority

  1146. to rise early

1147. long before the sun rose

  1148. and to go somewhere

1149. far away from everybody else

  1150. after a long day

  1151. of ministry,

1152. should not we as well?

  1153. You told me that...

1154. You told me you're too busy

  1155. to really sit down

1156. and take time to pray?

  1157. That's crazy,

  1158. because Christ was way

1159. busy than any of us.

  1160. Look at His day.

  1161. 32 through 34

1162. is really just a summary

1163. of a day of Christ,

  1164. that He killed many,

  1165. many people,

1166. and that the whole town

1167. had literally come to Him

  1168. and He healed all

  1169. who were sick

  1170. and demon-possessed.

  1171. You told me that

  1172. you are distracted?

  1173. I understand, beloved.

1174. Whenever I seek to pray,

1175. that's like the only time

  1176. I get text messages,

1177. the only time I get

  1178. phone calls.

  1179. It's really strange.

1180. People knock at the door.

  1181. I'm really tempted

  1182. to check Facebook.

  1183. And various things.

1184. I can relate to your temptation,

  1185. but far greater,

1186. far greater than my ability

1187. to relate to your distraction,

  1188. your ability,

  1189. or your tendency

  1190. to be distracted

  1191. is Christ's.

  1192. Look here.

1193. Look at us in verse...

  1194. Look at us,

  1195. with me,

  1196. in verse 36 and 37.

  1197. It says,

  1198. Simon and his companions

  1199. searched for Him.

  1200. They found Him

  1201. and said to Him,

1202. everyone is looking for you.

  1203. Christ had taken

  1204. this great effort

  1205. to arise long before

  1206. everybody else,

  1207. so that we hopefully,

  1208. I imagine,

  1209. that He didn't want

  1210. to be seen,

1211. gone to this far-off place

  1212. to be secluded,

1213. to be alone with God

1214. and to seek His face.

  1215. And then disciples,

1216. wanting to do a good thing,

  1217. I imagine,

  1218. saying,

  1219. everybody's looking for you.

1220. They go and distract Him.

1221. They go and take Him away

  1222. from the Father's presence.

  1223. So, beloved,

  1224. listen,

1225. this is really, really important.

  1226. Christ can relate

  1227. to your weakness

  1228. in this area.

  1229. Christ knows

  1230. what it feels like

  1231. to be distracted

  1232. while you seek

  1233. the Father's face.

1234. It is no surprise to Him.

  1235. It is not something

  1236. He is unlearned in.

  1237. And let us learn

1238. to look to the beloved,

  1239. the beloved crucified

  1240. Son of God

  1241. who is risen

  1242. and who knows

  1243. our weakness

  1244. to learn to cope

  1245. with these things.

  1246. Beloved.

  1247. Let us also note

1248. that Christ in His flesh

  1249. did not have

  1250. infinite energy.

  1251. It was not something

  1252. that we see

  1253. continuing in the Scriptures

  1254. at moments like

  1255. when Christ says,

  1256. I thirst,

  1257. and moments like that,

1258. that Christ did not have

  1259. infinite amount of energy

  1260. and that Christ

1261. had had a very busy day,

  1262. far busier than

  1263. what most of us

1264. experience on our regular day

  1265. previously.

  1266. And as we see

  1267. from the following verses

1268. that He was going to go

  1269. and continue to do

  1270. the same thing continually.

1271. Yet He made the time

1272. and the priority to pray.

1273. So, if you feel tired,

  1274. distracted,

1275. like you don't have energy

  1276. to stay awake

  1277. and sit there,

  1278. beloved,

1279. Christ knows how you feel.

1280. Look to Him for guidance.

1281. Look to Him for wisdom.

  1282. Look at His example.

1283. In Luke 5.16 it says,

  1284. But Jesus Himself

  1285. would often slip away

1286. to the wilderness and pray.

  1287. One of the beauties

  1288. of this text,

  1289. as a man named

  1290. Brother Paul Washer

1291. points out in a sermon,

1292. is that Christ slipped away

1293. to pray in the wilderness.

  1294. And you slip away

1295. to that which you love.

  1296. You slip away

  1297. and go off

  1298. to that which is

  1299. most cherished to you.

  1300. Maybe you slip away

  1301. to play music

  1302. or you slip away

  1303. to read a book.

  1304. Those aren't intrinsically

  1305. bad things to do,

  1306. by the way.

1307. I'm not saying those are sin.

1308. Those are good things to do

  1309. and God refreshes

  1310. our spirit to them.

  1311. But Christ often

  1312. slipped away to pray.

  1313. And that shows us

  1314. in the text,

  1315. Christ slipping away,

1316. that was the most valuable

  1317. to Him,

  1318. was seeing the face

  1319. and beholding the face

1320. of the Father in prayer.

1321. It was the great joy

  1322. of His day.

1323. In the context of that passage,

  1324. He had been doing

  1325. many miracles.

1326. It says that He was

  1327. healing many lepers.

  1328. It says,

  1329. but Christ would often

  1330. slip away to pray.

  1331. So let us learn,

  1332. like our beloved did,

1333. to slip away to God,

1334. to make prayer a priority,

  1335. to make beholding

  1336. the face of God

  1337. such a joyous thing

  1338. in our hearts,

  1339. that we long for

  1340. to the point where,

1341. in spite of our busy day,

1342. in spite of our hectic schedules,

1343. in spite of our tiredness

  1344. and all these things,

1345. that we slip away to it.

  1346. That it becomes

  1347. our source of strength

1348. and joy in the ministry.

  1349. Because we're all called

  1350. to the ministry

  1351. of reconciliation.

  1352. In 2 Corinthians 5,

  1353. Paul talks about

1354. all who are born again.

1355. And then he continues on

1356. and he ends the passage

  1357. with a great exchange,

  1358. justification by grace

  1359. through faith.

  1360. But in between that,

  1361. he says that God

  1362. has given us

  1363. the ministry

  1364. of reconciliation.

  1365. Going out

  1366. and proclaiming to men

  1367. the good news

1368. that Jesus Christ is Lord.

1369. And let us learn, beloved,

  1370. as Christ did,

  1371. as he went about

  1372. this same ministry,

1373. let us look at his example

1374. and see how he did it.

1375. He slipped away to pray.

1376. And my prayer for this point

  1377. in the sermon

1378. is that y'all really see

  1379. the value of prayer.

  1380. Because Christ did it.

  1381. Christ who was God

1382. made a common practice of it.

  1383. If Christ,

1384. who was God in the flesh

1385. made a practice of it,

  1386. we ought to.

  1387. Because he is our

  1388. perfect example.

  1389. He is the captain

  1390. of our faith,

  1391. our elder brother,

1392. who we should look after

  1393. to repeat.

1394. And let us also note

  1395. in this text

  1396. involving Christ's ministry

  1397. and how he was,

  1398. how he worked,

1399. how he shunned the comfort

  1400. and popularity

  1401. of the world.

1402. His disciples walk up to him

  1403. and they say,

1404. everyone is looking for you.

1405. All men seek after you.

  1406. This is a great,

  1407. joyous proclamation.

1408. It would have been so easy

  1409. to say,

  1410. I'm popular here.

  1411. I'm well received here.

1412. I'm going to stay here,

  1413. continue preaching,

  1414. continue healing,

1415. be loved by the people

1416. and continue on in my ministry.

1417. But what does Christ say?

  1418. He says,

1419. let us go somewhere else

  1420. to towns nearby

1421. so that I may preach

  1422. there also.

1423. For that is what I came for.

  1424. Christ knew the work

1425. that God had set before him

  1426. and refused to rest

1427. in the comfort of works

  1428. already accomplished.

  1429. And I know myself,

1430. and I'm sure many of you

1431. can relate to me in this,

  1432. that often I find

1433. the opposite to be true.

1434. I find myself only referring

  1435. back to past experiences

  1436. instead of continually

  1437. pushing forward

1438. oftentimes in the work of God.

  1439. I take comfort

1440. in what God has already

  1441. used me for

1442. and what God has already

  1443. done in me

  1444. rather than striving forward.

1445. And we would do well

1446. to learn as our Savior did

  1447. to not rest

  1448. until we have done

1449. what God has given us to do.

1450. And as you all know,

1451. what God has given us to do

  1452. is the Great Commission

1453. to go into all the nations,

  1454. all the world,

  1455. and preach Christ.

1456. And that has not been done,

  1457. as we all know.

  1458. So let us learn,

1459. as our Savior did here,

1460. not to rest in the comfort

  1461. of our friends,

  1462. the comfort of those

  1463. who receive us well.

1464. Let us continue fighting on

1465. for the glory of God,

1466. advancing the flag of Zion.

1467. Let us not rest in ease

  1468. and peace

1469. while men are out there

  1470. not worshiping God

1471. as he ought to be worshipped,

  1472. praising the Lord

1473. as he ought to be praised,

  1474. and they are dying

1475. and condemned to hell as well.

1476. We should have a burden

  1477. and urgency about us

  1478. to continue pressing on

  1479. because God deserves glory,

  1480. both being bowed to

  1481. as Lord

  1482. and being rejoiced

  1483. over as Savior.

  1484. Because Christ deserves

  1485. these things,

  1486. let us press

  1487. and press and press

  1488. and rely entirely

  1489. upon seeing the face

  1490. of the Father

1491. in prayer as Christ did here.

1492. Verse 39 of our text says,

1493. And he went into their synagogues

  1494. throughout all of Galilee,

  1495. preaching and casting out

  1496. the demons.

  1497. This shows us that

  1498. what Christ had said

  1499. in verse 38,

1500. what he came to do,

  1501. to go and preach,

  1502. he did,

  1503. and he accomplished.

  1504. It's obviously a curse

1505. to the rest of the Gospels.

  1506. I'm not saying

1507. at verse 39 it was done

  1508. because it wasn't.

  1509. Obviously,

1510. we have the rest of this Gospel

  1511. in the Gospel accounts,

  1512. but it shows that

  1513. Christ continued on

  1514. and pressed on

1515. with what he came to do.

  1516. He,

  1517. we see that Christ,

  1518. ah,

1519. I'm trying to word this properly.

1520. It's not in my notes.

1521. That was a bad choice.

  1522. We see that Christ

  1523. is entirely dependent,

  1524. as we've actually covered,

  1525. and that he accomplished

1526. what he came to do

  1527. because of the work

1528. that he had done previously.

1529. The power of his ministry

  1530. was in prayer.

1531. The power of his ministry

  1532. was in prayer,

  1533. my beloved.

  1534. We are not going

  1535. to accomplish things

  1536. because of our wit,

  1537. our own ability,

  1538. or anything like that.

  1539. We will accomplish

  1540. because we behold

  1541. the face of God

1542. and act as Christ did,

  1543. as our great brother.

  1544. So,

1545. last page of the notes.

  1546. Good.

  1547. So,

  1548. we're at the finally

  1549. and the conclusion.

  1550. Oh,

  1551. yeah,

1552. I remember what I was going to say now.

  1553. Sorry,

1554. I apologize for that distraction.

  1555. But,

1556. what Christ came to do,

  1557. he said,

1558. was to preach the Gospel.

  1559. That was the focus

  1560. and main aspect

  1561. of his ministry.

  1562. Um,

  1563. oftentimes,

  1564. you hear about

  1565. social work these days

  1566. and social justice

  1567. is an area

  1568. that has been

  1569. often neglected

  1570. by the church,

  1571. especially among

  1572. the evangelical church.

  1573. And that's the tragedy

  1574. because God loves

  1575. social justice.

  1576. He desires for it

  1577. to be brought out

  1578. and accomplished.

  1579. But we see here

  1580. that Christ's primary ministry

  1581. was preaching the Gospel.

1582. What Christ came to do

1583. and what we are to push on doing

  1584. is to preach

  1585. the Gospel of Christ.

  1586. We are to love

  1587. as Christ loved,

1588. to walk as he walked

  1589. as we looked at

  1590. that first verse

  1591. that I read,

  1592. which includes

  1593. looking after

  1594. those who are sick,

  1595. those who are destitute,

  1596. those who are poor,

  1597. unable themselves.

  1598. But his primary focus

  1599. was to preach

  1600. the Gospel

  1601. in all the places

  1602. that he was going.

  1603. For him,

  1604. it was Israel.

  1605. For us,

  1606. he has expanded it

  1607. to the whole world.

1608. So as we go forth,

1609. I know many of you

  1610. are called to missions.

1611. I know many of you,

  1612. whether it be

  1613. missions overseas

  1614. or missions

  1615. in a different state

1616. or missions down the road

  1617. or however it is

1618. that God has called you to do,

1619. let us not lose focus

  1620. of the main thing

1621. in our time of going,

1622. that we not ever see

  1623. the Gospel

1624. as less than an end

  1625. and all these things

  1626. as a means.

  1627. Using these things

  1628. to extol God.

  1629. So,

  1630. I want to,

  1631. I want to,

1632. we've kind of looked at

  1633. a bunch of like

  1634. spider web strings

1635. and I want to show you

1636. how the web actually looks

1637. in light of the whole passage

1638. that we've been looking at.

1639. So we see the first

1640. that Mark has at this point

  1641. established Christ's

  1642. absolute authority.

  1643. I hope you all

1644. have walked away with that

  1645. because I've said it

  1646. like ten times.

  1647. So we see Christ

  1648. as absolute authority

  1649. and we see that

  1650. the disciples

  1651. were compelled

  1652. by that absolute authority

  1653. to go to Christ

  1654. and to present

  1655. their needs before Him.

  1656. That

  1657. they had comfort

  1658. knowing that Christ

  1659. would hear

  1660. and faith knowing

  1661. that He was able

1662. to do as He pleased.

  1663. And then we see

  1664. that Christ continues on

1665. with a really busy day

1666. and we see an emphasis

  1667. on prayer

  1668. in that Christ prayed

1669. and we see how Christ prayed.

  1670. We see the emphasis

  1671. of how Christ prayed

  1672. being alone

  1673. to be completely

  1674. shut off to God

  1675. and early

  1676. showing a priority.

  1677. So beloved,

1678. what God is showing us

  1679. through Mark,

1680. one of the many things

  1681. is the importance

  1682. of prayer

  1683. and turning to God

  1684. in all things

  1685. for ministry

  1686. and for all.

  1687. Whether it be

  1688. the ministry

  1689. of being a husband,

  1690. a father,

  1691. a son,

  1692. a daughter,

  1693. or the ministry

  1694. of preaching the gospel

1695. to those who don't know Christ.

  1696. God is showing us

  1697. this great,

  1698. great,

  1699. great need

  1700. for prayer.

  1701. And beloved,

  1702. Hebrews 4.15

1703. says that we do not have

  1704. a high priest

  1705. who is unable

  1706. to sympathize with us

  1707. but in all ways

  1708. was attempted

  1709. as we were

  1710. yet without sin.

1711. And then it goes on

  1712. to say,

  1713. now let us boldly

  1714. approach the throne

  1715. of grace,

  1716. receiving grace

1717. as it is for the need.

  1718. And beloved,

  1719. listen,

  1720. this is really important.

  1721. We see

  1722. that the emphasis

  1723. of that passage

  1724. shows us

  1725. that because of

  1726. who Christ was,

  1727. we have boldness

  1728. before the Father.

  1729. We can come

  1730. and make bold requests

  1731. of God

  1732. in our prayer,

  1733. present bold things.

  1734. That's why we have

  1735. the ability to pray

  1736. for things like revival

  1737. because Christ

  1738. is our token.

  1739. His righteousness

  1740. has paid for us.

  1741. Our union with Christ,

  1742. being one with Him,

  1743. has made the road

  1744. for us to be

  1745. at the throne room

  1746. of God.

1747. And we have the ability,

  1748. the great and glorious,

  1749. precious ability

  1750. to walk before God,

  1751. say Father,

  1752. and present our requests

  1753. to Him

  1754. because of Christ,

1755. because of who He is,

1756. because of what He has done.

1757. So let us pray boldly.

  1758. Let us pray often,

  1759. alone,

  1760. and boldly

  1761. to our God

  1762. who hears us

  1763. and graciously,

  1764. ever so graciously,

  1765. condescends

  1766. to answer our prayers.

  1767. I have a confession

  1768. to you all.

  1769. As Nathan preached

1770. through the book of Nehemiah,

  1771. he often talked

  1772. about the value

  1773. of prayer

1774. as we see in the book.

  1775. And I so often

  1776. found myself saying

  1777. yes and amen

  1778. in my heart,

  1779. but so little

  1780. had been changed

  1781. by hearing

1782. what he was preaching about.

  1783. And I promise you,

  1784. until preparing

  1785. for this sermon,

  1786. God has birthed

  1787. a greater prayer life

  1788. in me

  1789. through this text

  1790. than before.

  1791. But my confession

  1792. is that

  1793. it is not enough,

  1794. brethren,

  1795. brothers and sisters,

1796. to say yes and amen

  1797. to these truths,

  1798. to say that prayer

  1799. is important

1800. and we need to do it

1801. and we need to push on.

  1802. We must back

  1803. our words

  1804. with actions

  1805. because

  1806. in the letter

  1807. to Corinth,

  1808. in the first one,

  1809. Paul talks about

1810. those who are reviling him

  1811. and he says,

  1812. well,

  1813. I will come soon

  1814. and they can have

  1815. the words

  1816. because the kingdom

  1817. of God comes

  1818. in word and deed.

  1819. So, brethren,

  1820. as we encourage

  1821. one another

  1822. to pray

  1823. and to seek

  1824. God's face,

  1825. as we say yes

  1826. and amen

  1827. to these truths

  1828. because they are

  1829. beautiful truths

  1830. found in scriptures,

  1831. the righteousness

  1832. of Christ

  1833. enabling us to pray,

  1834. let us back

  1835. our actions,

  1836. let us back

  1837. our words

  1838. with actions.

  1839. I've been doing

  1840. a lot of meditation

  1841. on Christian liberty

  1842. recently

  1843. and something

  1844. that God

  1845. has really shown me

  1846. through the meditation

  1847. and the word

  1848. is that there are

  1849. two kind of people

  1850. and James talks

  1851. about this.

  1852. There are the effectual

  1853. hearers and those

  1854. who do.

  1855. There are people

  1856. who say these things

  1857. that will say

  1858. yes and amen.

  1859. Yes,

  1860. these are true statements.

1861. We need to pray more.

  1862. We ought to act

  1863. as Christ acted

  1864. in that way

  1865. but then nothing

  1866. changes in their lives

  1867. and I'm fearful

  1868. for that

  1869. for many of you

  1870. and for myself

  1871. above all.

  1872. Trust me.

  1873. James 3.1

  1874. says,

  1875. let not many

  1876. become teachers

1877. for held to a higher

  1878. judgment.

  1879. So,

  1880. I fear

  1881. to sit here

1882. and preach this to you

  1883. to say these things

  1884. to you

1885. and then not change myself

1886. but I fear for you also

  1887. because you have heard

  1888. the word of God

  1889. regardless of how

  1890. poorly or well

1891. this sermon has been delivered

  1892. you have seen

  1893. that Christ prayed

  1894. made it a priority

1895. and went to do it

  1896. by himself

  1897. and did so

  1898. for the sake

  1899. of his ministry

1900. and if you do not

  1901. follow suit

1902. with what Christ has done

  1903. you give an account

  1904. for it

  1905. because you have knowledge

  1906. brethren

1907. I pray that the fear

  1908. of God

  1909. would press upon you

  1910. in that regard

  1911. and it would myself

  1912. that we would know

1913. that God has called us

1914. to be these kind of people

  1915. people of prayer

  1916. people that seek him

1917. and that we would not stand

1918. before God on judgment day

  1919. and give an account

  1920. for all the truth

  1921. we heard about prayer

  1922. all the truth

  1923. we heard about

  1924. these beautiful

  1925. glorious truths

  1926. and also

1927. let's look at the beauty

  1928. and the truth

1929. of who we get to pray to

1930. we get to pray to Christ

  1931. who had absolute authority

1932. as we've seen in this text

1933. and over the past couple sermons

  1934. over both man

  1935. the will of man

  1936. the nature

  1937. the nature

  1938. nature

1939. as well as the demonic world

  1940. and the spiritual realm

1941. what a joy to bring to him

  1942. our troubles and peace

  1943. our troubles

1944. and seek peace from him anyways

  1945. but

  1946. I want to end

  1947. with

1948. talking to any of you

1949. who are not in Christ

1950. who do not know Christ

  1951. I tell you people

  1952. that

  1953. this sermon

  1954. has very little

  1955. to offer you

  1956. because God is not

1957. obligated to hear your prayers

  1958. God is not

  1959. I mean

1960. he knows what your prayers are

1961. because he knows all things

  1962. but he's not obligated

  1963. to hear them

  1964. in the sense of

  1965. as a good friend

  1966. listens

1967. to you whenever you talk

1968. in the book of Daniel

  1969. in the 9th chapter

  1970. in the 18th verse

  1971. Daniel tells us that

  1972. he is not praying

  1973. based on his righteousness

1974. based on his own merits

1975. but on the great compassion

  1976. of God

  1977. and in the context

  1978. of what happens there

  1979. the next thing

  1980. that Daniel says

  1981. is forgive us

  1982. forgive us oh Lord

  1983. for our sins

  1984. he's making

  1985. he's praying

  1986. for the transgression

  1987. of his people

  1988. so

  1989. what that shows us

  1990. is that

  1991. whenever we talk about

  1992. having such confidence

  1993. and boldness

  1994. and prayer

  1995. being able to go

  1996. to God Almighty

  1997. and present our request

1998. is not because of who we are

1999. but is who Christ is

2000. and what he has done

  2001. and the compassion

2002. that Daniel was talking about

  2003. in that passage

2004. the compassion of the Lord

2005. is the work of Jesus Christ

  2006. that he came

  2007. lived a perfect

  2008. sinless life

2009. never committed a single sin

  2010. never lied once

2011. never had an impure thought

  2012. everything

2013. if you are outside of Christ

  2014. that you have done

  2015. that is wrong

  2016. he never did

  2017. and that he died

  2018. for his people

  2019. he completed the work

  2020. for his people

2021. and that he made redemption

  2022. for their sins

2023. and that is the merit

2024. that we come and pray

  2025. before our God with

2026. and if you are not in Christ

  2027. I tell you

  2028. and I invite you

  2029. to join us

  2030. Christ said

  2031. that he will

  2032. I'm sorry

  2033. the scriptures teach

  2034. that all who call

2035. on the name of the Lord

  2036. will be saved

  2037. all who call

2038. on the name of the Lord

  2039. will be saved

  2040. and you will also

  2041. have this joyous access

  2042. to this great God

2043. let me emphasize once more

2044. and now in my sermon

  2045. we're in the preaching

  2046. section of worship

2047. that God is not obligated

  2048. to answer your prayers

  2049. he is not obligated

2050. to do as you ask

2051. we do not force God's hand

  2052. God rejoices

  2053. to use the prayers

  2054. of his people

  2055. to accomplish his means

2056. but he has a far

  2057. greater view

2058. and a far greater wisdom

  2059. than we

  2060. in many things

  2061. so sometimes

  2062. we may ask things

2063. and they may not be

2064. they may not be given to us

2065. they may not be granted to us

  2066. by the Father

2067. but it is not because

  2068. the merit of Christ

  2069. is insufficient

  2070. it is because

  2071. God has a better

  2072. and greater plan

  2073. for his beloved

2074. to make them like Christ

  2075. let's pray
