  1. It's good to be with you tonight. It's always a joy and a privilege and an honor to be able to share His Word no matter what circumstance, no matter where we are in our lives.

  2. It's good to come here. I had a pretty rough day today. Just being honest with you guys, it's just kind of one of those rough days. A lot of stuff happened at work and I work in the IT field, so when stuff goes wrong, I'm responsible for that and we have to get that stuff working again. It was pretty tough.

  3. So let's go to the Lord and pray real quick so we can just praise Him for tonight and the fellowship that we get to experience together in His Word and in worship.

  4. Heavenly Father, we thank You so much for giving us the opportunity here tonight to hear Your Word, but not only just to be hearers, but also be doers.

  5. So Father, I pray that You would make Your Word alive in our hearts tonight.

  6. Father, that it would transform us. It would transform our understanding of You. It would transform our understanding of the cross and of this topic that's so important for us to understand in our faith.

  7. So Father, I pray that You would use this time tonight, that You would utilize this time tonight for Your glory.

  8. And Father, we would see the ultimate reality of our salvation in You. It's in Jesus' name that we pray. Amen.

  9. If you have a Bible tonight, and I hope you do, I invite you to open with me to Galatians chapter 2.

    Galatians 2 chapter mention

  10. Galatians chapter 2.

    Galatians 2 chapter mention

  11. And we have a great Word to study tonight.

  12. I know that it's great because every passage that we study in God's Word is great, isn't it?

  13. I love God's Word. It's just great to be able to study it.

  14. But tonight, I'm praying that this chapter will just come alive in this room.

  15. And it will come alive in our hearts.

  16. And that it would transform our lives and transform our understanding of the cross.

  17. And our understanding of our salvation.

  18. And ultimately, our view of our topic tonight, which is, as Nathan already mentioned, justification.

  19. It's very important that we understand that.

  20. And I want to be clear tonight that we're not just teaching topics here.

  21. I'm going to be primarily teaching from a singular passage, which is known as expository preaching,

  22. even though it seems like we might be teaching topically here on Thursday nights.

  23. And it's true that we have an idea of where we're going.

  24. We teach from God's Word. We don't teach from a topic.

  25. And I think it's important for us to grasp that because we find our truth in God's Word, not from man-centered ideas.

  26. And that's why we, as a church, have made a commitment to teaching expository messages on Sunday mornings.

  27. And we teach expository on Thursday nights in our Bible studies because we get our truth from God's Word,

  28. not from an idea where we pull an idea out of our heads and then we try to apply Scripture to it.

  29. That's the wrong way to handle God's Word.

  30. We get our ideology and our ideas because we believe that God has given us a Word that is sufficient.

  31. And we believe that God's given us everything in Scripture that pertains to life and godliness.

  32. And therefore, we get our truth. We derive our truth from Scripture and not from man-centered ideas.

  33. This text tonight speaks strongly toward justification.

  34. And Paul, as you know, is writing to a church of Galatia or the people of God in Galatia.

  35. And what we have here in this chapter, we're going to go through the whole chapter.

  36. What we have here is two episodes, essentially two episodes, and then we have an explanation at the end.

  37. So that's how we're going to divide the text tonight in three different ways.

  38. So let's dive into the first episode, Galatians 2, verse 1.

    Galatians 2:1

  39. Then after fourteen years, I went up against Jerusalem with Barnabas, taking Titus along with me.

  40. I went up because of a revelation and set before them, though privately before those who seemed influential,

  41. the gospel that I proclaim among the Gentiles, in order to make sure that I was not running or had not run in vain.

  42. But even Titus, who was with me, was not forced to be circumcised, though he was a Greek.

  43. Yet because of false brothers secretly brought in, who slipped in to spy out our freedom that we have in Christ,

  44. so that they might bring us into slavery, to them we did not yield in submission, even for a moment,

  45. so that the truth of the gospel might be preserved for you.

  46. Verse 6.

  47. Verse 6.

  48. And when James and Cephas and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace that was given to me,

  49. they gave the right hand of fellowship to Barnabas and me,

  50. that we should go to the Gentiles and they to the circumcised.

  51. Only they asked us to remember the poor, the very thing that I was eager to do.

  52. Galatians 2, verses 1 through 10, this first episode, the first section that we're kind of looking at tonight,

    Galatians 2:1–10

  53. is a picture of legalism.

  54. It's a picture of legalism.

  55. If you're a note taker, this is what I want you to do, is warm up your pens and get ready for some definitions tonight.

  56. Legalism is a situation where there is a right behavior with a wrong belief.

  57. Legalism is a situation where there is a right behavior with a wrong belief.

  58. I'm going to explain that in just a moment.

  59. But here's what's going on.

  60. The problem in the church is that they have these Judaizers who are coming in and saying that you have to do certain things,

  61. you've got to perform certain laws or certain rituals in order to receive grace from God.

  62. And so you have these people who are trying to explain these things,

  63. and namely what we're talking about here is circumcision.

  64. They're saying in order for you to receive grace, it's only available to you if you are circumcised.

  65. This is what these Judaizers are saying.

  66. They're saying you have to follow the law of the Old Testament, the old law.

  67. And this is where Paul talks about how Titus, who he himself, a Gentile, wasn't compelled to participate,

  68. wasn't compelled to be circumcised.

  69. And this was huge.

  70. This was incredibly huge because if Titus had been compelled to be circumcised,

  71. then it would have been an affront to the gospel of grace that Paul was teaching.

  72. Because it would have made the gospel conditional.

  73. It would be conditional upon whether or not you were circumcised.

  74. And you would have had to have been circumcised in order to receive this gospel.

  75. Or you have to do certain things to receive this gospel.

  76. And so here we have legalism at its finest.

  77. That's what's going on in this first section of Scripture, the first section of Galatians 2.

  78. And legalism at its heart is working on our own rules and in our own power.

  79. And ultimately legalism is working to earn God's favor.

  80. You follow a set of rules.

  81. You perform these certain sacraments.

  82. You do things right.

  83. And then you earn favor with God.

  84. That is what legalism is.

  85. I'll give you an example just real quickly of my own life.

  86. When I was growing up, I had a brother that was six years older than me.

  87. And I looked up to him.

  88. Anybody a younger sibling?

  89. We have quite a few younger siblings here.

  90. Man, I looked up to my older brother like he was...

  91. I mean, I just wanted to be just like him.

  92. And so one day we were...

  93. After school, we were at home alone before mom and dad got home from work.

  94. And that's when we usually got into trouble.

  95. You know, that's when we usually did things that we weren't supposed to be doing.

  96. So we went outside.

  97. We were bored.

  98. We went outside one day.

  99. And we started to pick up the little stone pebbles that are in the landscaping...

  100. Like the landscaping pebbles that are, you know, in our bushes and stuff.

  101. And we started to pick those up and just start chunking them over the house.

  102. Don't ask me why.

  103. It's completely pointless.

  104. But we were having a good time.

  105. And so we were picking up these pebbles.

  106. We got a handful of them.

  107. And he starts throwing them.

  108. So I'm the little brother following along with what he's doing.

  109. And I started picking up pebbles and chunking them over the house.

  110. Well, it didn't take real long.

  111. I didn't take too many stones before me as an uncoordinated six-year-old.

  112. I take a pebble and I start to chunk it.

  113. And I just...

  114. Straight into a glass storm door.

  115. And this thing didn't just crack.

  116. This thing started in one little bitty section.

  117. And you could see it as if it was in slow motion.

  118. From that one section, millions of cracks started to spread out from there.

  119. And glass started to rain down from this thing.

  120. And I'm looking at this thinking, I'm in trouble.

  121. I'm in big trouble now.

  122. Because me and my brother did a lot of stuff that we could kind of cover over.

  123. We used a lot of paint in our lifetime to cover up marks on the wall and things like that.

  124. Where we scuffed up the walls or we were doing something we shouldn't be doing and we could cover over.

  125. This was not something that I could cover up.

  126. And so I knew that I was in trouble.

  127. And so I went in my room and I just started bawling.

  128. The six-year-old, you know, you're just like crying because you know you're in trouble.

  129. I said, Craig, you've got to call Mom and my brother.

  130. His name's Craig.

  131. You've got to call Mom and let her know because she's going to come home and find it anyway.

  132. So we've got to get out of this somehow.

  133. And there's no getting out of it, of course.

  134. The consequence, by the way, is really what we're heading toward for the story.

  135. But the consequence was, it must have been around fall time because there must have been leaves in the yard.

  136. And my dad came home and was like, okay, we've got to figure out a consequence for that.

  137. So you guys need to get out in the yard and rake some leaves.

  138. So we rake leaves.

  139. Not just that day.

  140. We raked leaves all fall.

  141. Anytime there was a leaf in the yard, dad was like, remember the storm door?

  142. Get out in the yard and start raking.

  143. The next year came around.

  144. Leaves started falling again.

  145. Remember the storm door?

  146. It's time to get outside.

  147. Third year, fourth year, fifth year.

  148. I'm not even kidding.

  149. It was like we kept being reminded of this thing where we had to do.

  150. We had to go out and rake and rake and rake.

  151. And we never, I mean, I'm surprised my dad doesn't still bring it up.

  152. For how many years he kept bringing that up.

  153. But in my six-year-old mind to 13-year-old, however long it lasted that we had to go rake yard,

  154. I felt or I thought that I had to go rake leaves to earn my father's love.

  155. That's what I thought.

  156. But the reality was that my dad's love was there for me all along the way.

  157. And I know this being on the other side of fatherhood, of being a father myself.

  158. If Joseph were to do something, yes, he would have consequences.

  159. I don't know if he's going to have five years worth of leaf raking, but he would have consequences.

  160. But my love would still remain for him.

  161. I know that on this side of fatherhood.

  162. And I know, looking back, that my dad loved me all along the way.

  163. Now, think about our definition of legalism.

  164. Right behavior with wrong belief.

  165. Was it wrong for me to rake leaves?

  166. No.

  167. It's absolutely not wrong for me to rake leaves.

  168. It was a good thing to serve my family.

  169. I was being obedient to my father.

  170. I was facing the consequences of the poor decision that I made.

  171. But was it wrong for me to think that I needed to rake leaves to receive my father's love?

  172. Yes.

  173. And that's what these Judaizers were saying needed to be done, to be circumcised, to follow Jewish laws.

  174. Needed to be done in order to receive the father's love, in order to be accepted for the father.

  175. Were following Jewish laws or being circumcised in and of themselves wrong?

  176. No, absolutely not.

  177. Circumcision was a huge part of God's story.

  178. It's a huge part of the history of God.

  179. It's a huge part of the old covenant.

  180. There was absolutely nothing wrong with circumcision.

  181. I want you to hear that loud and clear tonight.

  182. There was nothing wrong with following the old law.

  183. But when it became a bad thing is when it was accompanied by the belief that they needed to do these things in order to earn favor with God.

  184. Or in order to earn acceptance with God.

  185. It's right behavior with wrong belief.

  186. Now translate that a couple thousand years later into our context.

  187. We're not talking about circumcision.

  188. We're not talking about Jewish law.

  189. Most of us aren't really stumbling over that issue right now.

  190. But what are the good things we do?

  191. What are the really great things that we do in our Christian lives?

  192. Maybe a quiet time.

  193. Or maybe it's showing up here on Thursday night for Bible study.

  194. You check that off on your list of things that you do good for the week.

  195. You're serving people.

  196. Or maybe it's a prayer meeting on Friday morning.

  197. So you come to you.

  198. Good things.

  199. These are excellent behaviors to which we place, we pour our lives into.

  200. And there's nothing wrong with doing these things.

  201. But where we run into wrong is as soon as they're accompanied by the belief that doing those things finds us more favor with God.

  202. We've missed the point.

  203. Right behavior with wrong belief.

  204. I know some of you right now are thinking, man, what does this have anything to do with justification?

  205. It has everything to do with justification.

  206. I hope you can track with me as we continue on through God's Word.

  207. So we're going to look at the second picture, Galatians 2, 11.

  208. Galatians 2, we'll start in verse 11 for the second picture here.

  209. When Peter came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face because he was clearly in the wrong.

  210. Before certain men came from James.

  211. And he used to eat with the Gentiles.

  212. But when they arrived, he began to draw back and separate himself from the Gentiles

  213. because he was afraid of those who belonged to the circumcision group.

  214. And so what we have going on here right now is we have two different groups.

  215. It's two different segments.

  216. You can almost even think about it, if we want to bring it into our context,

  217. you can think of it as Reformed believers and non-Reformed believers.

  218. You have two different camps and they're believing two different things.

  219. And so you have people who believe that circumcision was necessary.

  220. Then you have those who are Gentiles who don't believe that circumcision was necessary.

  221. And these groups are in conflict with one another.

  222. Believers in conflict with other believers and their beliefs.

  223. And so what he's saying here is that Peter's beginning to draw back from the Gentiles

  224. because he's afraid of what the people who are circumcised, the Jews, with their thinking of him.

  225. All along the way.

  226. Verse 13.

  227. So the first part of Galatians chapter 2 is a picture of legalism.

    Galatians 2 chapter mention

  228. The second part of Genesis chapter 2 is a picture of hypocrisy.

    Genesis 2 chapter mention

  229. It's a picture of hypocrisy.

  230. For you note-takers, hypocrisy is right belief with wrong behavior.

  231. Hypocrisy is right belief with wrong behavior.

  232. Let me explain what just happened in Genesis 2, 11 through 14.

  233. It's kind of hard to follow this.

  234. And I believe this is one of those sections of Scripture that's hard to follow because of translation.

  235. It's not just because, you know, it just seems kind of wordy.

  236. And I think that that's how it had to be translated.

  237. But this is one of the most dramatic, most intense episodes in all of church history.

  238. And certainly in the New Testament.

  239. Because what you have here is the Apostle Paul is publicly confronting the Apostle Peter.

  240. Two big shots in apostolic history, okay?

  241. These two big shots in early history.

  242. They are apostles, which means that they're above just a regular disciple.

  243. They are these first major teachers.

  244. And you have Apostle Paul going up against the man who essentially taught the first Christian sermon.

  245. And he was kind of, you can kind of think of Peter kind of like the leader of the apostles in a sense.

  246. And Paul's going up against him in front of these people.

  247. And this was an intense moment.

  248. And there's background here that has to be explained.

  249. It mostly centers around Acts chapter 10 where Peter receives a vision from God

    Acts 10 chapter mention

  250. that essentially tells him that the gospel is not just open to the Gentiles.

  251. That salvation is not just open, I'm sorry, to the Jews.

  252. It's not just open to the Jews.

  253. But now it's open to a whole range of people that we call the Gentiles.

  254. The people who aren't Jews.

  255. What was once available only to a small segment of the population

  256. is open up to a whole world of people.

  257. Now this is really important for us in here tonight.

  258. Because most of us who are in here tonight will fall under the category of Gentile.

  259. Most of us are not Jewish by heritage.

  260. So this is a great truth for us.

  261. Because we are now part of the new covenant.

  262. We are allowed to be part of the new covenant in Christ Jesus.

  263. And Peter was there.

  264. Peter knew the gospel.

  265. He believed the gospel.

  266. And he knew.

  267. We know from Acts chapter 10.

    Acts 10 chapter mention

  268. He knew that the gospel was open to Gentiles.

  269. He knew that.

  270. But Peter's life wasn't reflecting the gospel.

  271. He knew that all men were accepted before God.

  272. Regardless of whether they were circumcised or not circumcised.

  273. But he wasn't practicing that in his life.

  274. Now again, we can't just keep this in the context of 2,000 years ago.

  275. We've got to bring this back into our context today.

  276. We don't normally get hung up over circumcision.

  277. But are there inconsistencies in your life?

  278. Are there inconsistencies in your life that don't line up with the gospel that we believe in?

  279. If we believed in a Savior that came to preach good news to the poor and to the powerless,

  280. yet our lives aren't entirely abandoned to teaching that and taking that message to the world,

  281. then our lives are out of line with the gospel.

  282. We're out of step with the gospel.

  283. They don't match up with the gospel.

  284. And there's inconsistency there.

  285. And I don't really think we have to give many examples tonight,

  286. because each and every one of us struggle in some way differently.

  287. We all have different struggles.

  288. We all have different inconsistencies that don't line up with the gospel.

  289. I struggle with stuff.

  290. You struggle with stuff.

  291. I might struggle with different things than you struggle with.

  292. But let us suffice to say that if your life doesn't look radically different than the rest of the world,

  293. then you're probably not living for the gospel, for the sake of the gospel.

  294. There's probably inconsistencies in your life.

  295. And these things are often evident, by the way, in the way that we spend our time,

  296. in the way that we spend our money,

  297. the way that we spend our thoughts as we think about things,

  298. even down to the way that we dress sometimes.

  299. There can be inconsistencies.

  300. And so what we have to do, as a people of God, is avoid both of these errors.

  301. We have to avoid legalism, thinking that we have the behaviors right,

  302. and everything's okay.

  303. We have to avoid, on the other hand,

  304. talking and believing in this gospel of grace,

  305. and then living our lives just like the rest of the world.

  306. So how do we bring these two things together?

  307. How do we fuse right beliefs with right behavior?

  308. How do we pull these two things together?

  309. And the answer, it's going to be a Sunday school answer,

  310. and you've got to bear with me on this one,

  311. the answer is faith.

  312. The answer is faith.

  313. And this is where justification comes into play.

  314. This idea of faith and justification fuse these two ideas together.

  315. So let's continue in Galatians chapter 2 and verse 15.

    Galatians 2 chapter mention

  316. We ourselves are Jews by birth and not Gentile sinners,

  317. yet we know that a person is not justified by the works of the law,

  318. but through faith in Jesus Christ,

  319. so that we have believed in Christ Jesus,

  320. in order to be justified by faith in Christ,

  321. and not by works of the law,

  322. because by works of the law no one will be justified.

  323. But if in our endeavor to be justified in Christ,

  324. we too were found to be sinners,

  325. is Christ a servant of sin?

  326. Certainly not.

  327. For if I rebuild what I tore down,

  328. I prove myself to be a transgressor.

  329. For through the law I died to the law,

  330. so that I might live to God.

  331. Verse 20.

  332. I have been crucified with Christ,

  333. and it is no longer I who live,

  334. but Christ who lives in me.

  335. And the life I now live in the flesh,

  336. I live by faith in the Son of God,

  337. who loved me and gave himself for me.

  338. I do not nullify the grace of God.

  339. For if righteousness were through the law,

  340. then Christ died for no purpose.

  341. You see the two key words mentioned throughout this section of Scripture?

  342. The two key words there are justified in faith.

  343. Justified in faith.

  344. And over and over and over again,

  345. you'll notice that justification,

  346. not just in this passage,

  347. but all over the New Testament,

  348. that justification is one of the amazing results of faith in Jesus Christ.

  349. We know that man is not justified by observing the law,

  350. so we too have put our faith in Christ Jesus,

  351. that we might be justified by faith in Christ,

  352. not by observing the law,

  353. because by observing the law,

  354. no one will be justified.

  355. So what Paul is saying here is that we are justified by our faith.

  356. But what is justification?

  357. It's translated all throughout the New Testament

  358. as justified, just, justify, justification, righteousness, right, or righteous.

  359. All those words can essentially be interchanged in New Testament terminology.

  360. And it's one of the most important concepts that any follower of Christ can really grasp.

  361. And so this is an incredibly important concept for us to understand tonight.

  362. If we walk away from here not understanding justification,

  363. then this is going to be a travesty.

  364. We have to understand what this justification means for us tonight.

  365. Luther said,

  366. The doctrine of justification by faith alone

  367. is the doctrine upon which the church stands or dies.

  368. Sorry, or falls.

  369. John Calvin said,

  370. It's the hinge upon which everything turns.

  371. So it's at the heart of the Reformation,

  372. and it's at the heart of New Testament Christianity.

  373. Luther said in another place, he said,

  374. The justification is the truth of the gospel.

  375. It's the principal article of all Christian doctrine,

  376. wherein the knowledge of all godliness consists.

  377. Most necessary it is, therefore,

  378. that we should know this article well,

  379. teach it unto others,

  380. and beat it into their heads continually.

  381. I like that, don't you?

  382. We're just to beat this concept of justification into each other's heads.

  383. Man, you trip up, you stumble, you fall.

  384. Yeah, you go to your brother and your sister in Christ.

  385. You confront them with their sin,

  386. but then you beat justification into their heads.

  387. Because the reality is that we are justified.

  388. We are justified.

  389. So we clearly see this is a very important concept,

  390. and it's certainly important for us to get this right.

  391. And we get this clear and precise in our understanding.

  392. I've heard people attempt to explain it in this way,

  393. and it's not that this is a wrong way to explain justification necessarily,

  394. it's just that it's an incomplete way to explain justification.

  395. But you may have heard this before,

  396. have you ever heard anybody say,

  397. justification means it's just as if I'd never sinned.

  398. And I think the problem with that is that

  399. in trying to find a cute way of explaining something

  400. so that we can remember it,

  401. we kind of don't encompass the whole of justification.

  402. So it's just as if I'd never sinned.

  403. But here's the problem.

  404. You have sinned.

  405. And the consequences for sin is death,

  406. according to Scripture.

  407. All over Scripture, the consequences for sin is death.

  408. So there's a consequence,

  409. and sin deserves the wrath of God.

  410. And God, who is just and holy,

  411. a God who is just and holy,

  412. can't just sweep sin under a rug and forget about it.

  413. There's a consequence that must be paid,

  414. and somebody, someone,

  415. has to pay that consequence.

  416. And so the best way to understand justification

  417. is to understand just a good, solid definition of justification.

  418. So that's what we're going to do.

  419. We're going to walk through this word by word,

  420. because each word in this definition is incredibly important.

  421. Note takers, here you go.

  422. You're geared up, ready to go.

  423. Justification is the gracious act of God.

  424. So we're going to start there.

  425. Justification is the gracious act of God.

  426. It's something that God does by His grace.

  427. In verse 16, at the very end of the verse,

  428. he says,

  429. Not by observing the law,

  430. because by observing the law,

  431. no one will be justified.

  432. It's the same picture in Romans chapter 3,

    Romans 3 chapter mention

  433. where Paul also says,

  434. There is no one who does good,

  435. not even one.

  436. There's nothing that anyone in all the earth

  437. can do to initiate God's justification.

  438. God does it by His own grace,

  439. by His own will,

  440. His own grace.

  441. It's entirely from Him and by His grace.

  442. Justification is the gracious act of God

  443. by which God declares.

  444. By which God declares.

  445. The key word there is declares.

  446. Justification is a declaration.

  447. And the word picture that we have

  448. with this word justification

  449. is kind of in a courtroom setting.

  450. You think of a judge

  451. and how he declares judgment upon someone.

  452. How he declares whether you're guilty

  453. or not guilty.

  454. He passes judgment.

  455. And that's the picture,

  456. the word picture that we get

  457. is a holy judge who passes judgment,

  458. makes a declaration.

  459. And that's the language

  460. that's being used here in justification.

  461. It's not a process.

  462. It is an act.

  463. It happens at one point in time.

  464. And this is huge for us to understand this.

  465. It's huge for us to understand

  466. that this is something that happens

  467. as an act in one point in time

  468. because we can't be more justified tomorrow

  469. than we are today.

  470. And we can't be more justified

  471. a year from now than we are today.

  472. Because justification happens.

  473. It's an act.

  474. It's not a process.

  475. Romans 5.1, Paul says,

  476. Since we have been justified through faith,

  477. we have peace with God.

  478. When we have been justified,

  479. I want to just clarify that

  480. if you're a born-again believer in this room,

  481. you've been justified.

  482. I don't want to make the assumption

  483. that everybody in here is a born-again believer,

  484. that everyone's redeemed,

  485. because that may not be the case.

  486. But God has made a once and for all declaration

  487. over you as a believer in Christ Jesus.

  488. Now that declaration involves next in the definition,

  489. a sinner.

  490. This is how it reads,

  491. Justification is the gracious act of God

  492. by which God declares a sinner.

  493. This is the picture of justification.

  494. It is God as the judge dealing with man, the sinner,

  495. guilty before a holy God.

  496. And this is so big for Paul to be teaching this doctrine.

  497. Why?

  498. Why is it so big that Paul is teaching this doctrine?

  499. Because talk about a guy who,

  500. before meeting Christ,

  501. was trying to follow the rules to a T.

  502. See, he attributed righteousness to himself

  503. by trying to follow the law of God.

  504. Yeah, he was persecuting the Christian church.

  505. That was very true.

  506. He was persecuting the church,

  507. but why was he persecuting the church?

  508. Because he believed that they were an affront

  509. to the Old Testament law.

  510. He believed that they were false teachers at the time.

  511. But they were certainly not false teachers.

  512. So he was attempting to be the best person that he could be.

  513. And when he met Christ,

  514. he was confronted not only with his inadequacy

  515. because of his own sin,

  516. he was also confronted with his inadequacy

  517. to be able to do anything good

  518. or anything righteous

  519. that would live up to the standard of Christ.

  520. Because there's nothing that he can do.

  521. The best things that we bring to the table before God

  522. are wickedness.

  523. They're as filthy rags,

  524. according to the Old Testament.

  525. Nothing that we can bring to God

  526. is good enough.

  527. And so here's the picture.

  528. What you have is a guilty man

  529. standing before the Holy Judge of the universe,

  530. and in justification,

  531. you have a gracious act of God

  532. by which God declares a sinner righteous.

  533. That's the whole definition.

  534. Gracious act of God

  535. by which God declares a sinner righteousness.

  536. That, ladies and gentlemen,

  537. is an amazing, amazing truth.

  538. That is an amazing truth.

  539. That the Holy God of the universe,

  540. the Holy Judge over all the earth,

  541. would look at you and at me

  542. as we're standing there

  543. in direct defiance

  544. and direct obedience to Him,

  545. an affront to the gospel itself,

  546. as we live in our sin,

  547. that a holy God and a holy judge

  548. would look down on me and you,

  549. and He would say,

  550. not guilty.

  551. Not guilty.

  552. Not guilty.

  553. Righteous.

  554. Accepted.

  555. Peace before me.

  556. It doesn't make sense

  557. to us in our minds.

  558. How can that happen?

  559. Solely on the basis of faith in Christ Jesus.

  560. That's how it happens.

  561. That's the only way.

  562. How can a sinner be declared righteous in God's sight?

  563. I can tell you,

  564. the process was not an easy process.

  565. It required a perfect human sacrifice,

  566. and it required God to sacrifice His Son,

  567. and not just sacrifice Him,

  568. but sacrifice Him in one of the most gruesome

  569. kind of deaths that a human can experience.

  570. But not only that,

  571. and I may be getting ahead of myself here a little bit,

  572. but not only did He die a gruesome death,

  573. but He took on the sin of the world

  574. into His body

  575. when He hung on the cross.

  576. We're talking about

  577. a radical,

  578. gruesome,

  579. horrifying death.

  580. The answer to the question

  581. is that God has taken

  582. the righteousness of Christ,

  583. He has taken His righteousness,

  584. and He has credited it

  585. to the sinner's account.

  586. This is 2 Corinthians 5.

  587. God made Him who had no sin

  588. to be sin for us.

  589. And don't miss this.

  590. God took all that was in your account,

  591. all the unrighteousness,

  592. all the sinful acts,

  593. all the ugliness of sin,

  594. and the willful rebellion,

  595. and idolatry that was in your account,

  596. and He placed that onto His Son

  597. as He hung on the cross.

  598. He didn't just sweep it under the rug

  599. and pretend like it's not there.

  600. See, Jesus, in His life,

  601. He never minimized sin.

  602. And God never minimizes sin.

  603. In Luke chapter 7,

    Luke 7 chapter mention

  604. we have an account

  605. where Jesus was eating

  606. with the Pharisees,

  607. as He often did.

  608. He would eat with sinners,

  609. he would eat with the Pharisees,

  610. he would eat with whoever

  611. invited Him over

  612. because He wanted to make

  613. an impact on the region,

  614. He wanted to make an impact

  615. on the culture,

  616. and so He often would eat

  617. with people who didn't

  618. necessarily agree with Him.

  619. So He was eating

  620. with the Pharisees,

  621. and word gets out around town

  622. that Jesus is in this,

  623. home,

  624. and Simon the Pharisee,

  625. in his house,

  626. he was eating with them,

  627. and word spreading

  628. all over town,

  629. and it gets to this one woman.

  630. This woman was,

  631. according to Scripture,

  632. a known sinner,

  633. possibly a prostitute.

  634. But nonetheless,

  635. we know that she was

  636. a known sinner in the town.

  637. You know, most of us,

  638. we like to kind of

  639. keep our sins private,

  640. don't we?

  641. This woman was not

  642. keeping our sins private.

  643. She was a known sinner.

  644. And word gets to her

  645. that Jesus is eating

  646. with the Pharisees,

  647. and I don't know

  648. how all it spreads

  649. and how it went.

  650. I'm sure that Jesus

  651. was starting to make

  652. a stir in the land,

  653. and so people were

  654. talking about Him

  655. wherever He goes,

  656. and so this woman,

  657. she hears somebody say,

  658. Jesus,

  659. He's over here.

  660. He's in this house.

  661. I saw Him walk in there

  662. with the Pharisees.

  663. She says,

  664. Jesus,

  665. He's eating over here

  666. in this house?

  667. Yeah,

  668. I saw Him walk in.

  669. And Simon,

  670. the Pharisee,

  671. went in his house.

  672. He went in there,

  673. and a couple other Pharisees

  674. went in there,

  675. and Jesus went in.

  676. And this woman,

  677. a known sinner,

  678. I don't know what makes

  679. someone do this,

  680. but she was determined

  681. to get in there.

  682. She was determined

  683. to go in

  684. and to speak to Jesus.

  685. I don't know what makes

  686. a sinner do that,

  687. but she was determined.

  688. So she,

  689. slips in the back door,

  690. knocks out the cook.

  691. I mean,

  692. I don't know how you

  693. get into these places.

  694. You know,

  695. there weren't big homes

  696. like we have today,

  697. so she somehow slips in,

  698. gets to the area

  699. where they're eating.

  700. It says they're reclining

  701. at the table,

  702. which usually meant

  703. that they all had their heads

  704. in and tore the table together,

  705. and they reclined.

  706. It was a custom

  707. that they did back then.

  708. They didn't really necessarily

  709. always sit in chairs

  710. like we do today.

  711. So they're reclining there,

  712. and she makes her way

  713. around to Jesus.

  714. Remember,

  715. a known sinner,

  716. and she begins to weep.

  717. She begins to weep,

  718. and as her tears

  719. are falling off of her face,

  720. they're dripping

  721. onto the feet

  722. of the Son of God.

  723. And as those tears

  724. dripping,

  725. accumulate,

  726. she takes her hair

  727. and begins to

  728. scrub his feet

  729. and to wash

  730. his feet

  731. with her tears.

  732. she brought in

  733. a container

  734. with oil.

  735. She anointed

  736. his feet

  737. with oil,

  738. perfume.

  739. Pharisees

  740. had a heyday

  741. with that.

  742. Pharisees who were

  743. eating with him

  744. had a just,

  745. you know,

  746. if he was the Son of God,

  747. he would surely know

  748. that this woman,

  749. they thought they had

  750. Jesus trapped,

  751. he would surely know

  752. this woman was a known

  753. sinner in this town.

  754. If he was the Son of God

  755. like he says he is,

  756. he would surely know that.

  757. And knowing their thoughts,

  758. you gotta know Jesus

  759. knew what they were saying,

  760. he knew what they were

  761. thinking in their minds.

  762. He turns to them,

  763. he says,

  764. can I tell you a story?

  765. Two men

  766. owed money.

  767. One owed a lot.

  768. And one owed

  769. just a little.

  770. Both of their debts

  771. were forgiven.

  772. Who do you think

  773. was more grateful,

  774. the one who owed a lot

  775. or the one who owed

  776. a little?

  777. They said,

  778. well,

  779. the one who owed a lot.

  780. He said,

  781. yep,

  782. she owes a lot.

  783. She sinned

  784. in a public,

  785. horrible way.

  786. And her debt

  787. is big.

  788. She owes a lot.

  789. See,

  790. it's important to note

  791. that Jesus doesn't

  792. minimize the sin here.

  793. He doesn't minimize

  794. the sin.

  795. He says that her debt

  796. is big.

  797. And he looks at the woman

  798. and he says,

  799. your sins

  800. are forgiven.

  801. Your sins are forgiven.

  802. Your faith has saved you.

  803. Go

  804. in peace.

  805. And even though

  806. her sins

  807. were never minimized,

  808. she found peace

  809. with God

  810. that day

  811. through his son.

  812. And you'll notice

  813. that it happened

  814. in a declaration.

  815. Jesus declaring

  816. her sins

  817. forgiven.

  818. It's the picture

  819. of justification.

  820. And it works

  821. the same way

  822. for us

  823. when we give our lives

  824. over to Christ

  825. and righteousness

  826. is imputed

  827. to us.

  828. We are declared

  829. righteous.

  830. We are accepted

  831. before God.

  832. And this is why

  833. Paul adamantly

  834. opposes Peter

  835. in this circumstance

  836. and anyone else

  837. who undercuts

  838. the gospel

  839. by trying to add

  840. works

  841. by necessity

  842. for salvation.

  843. Because God

  844. has already done

  845. the work for us.

  846. Christ's work

  847. on the cross

  848. was sufficient

  849. for us.

  850. We no longer

  851. have to work

  852. for our salvation.

  853. And I hope you see

  854. why the doctrine

  855. of justification

  856. is such a beautiful

  857. thing in the life

  858. of the believer.

  859. That through faith

  860. in Christ

  861. we are accepted

  862. before God.

  863. And you can see

  864. why people

  865. during the Reformation

  866. were saying

  867. man that just

  868. sounds like

  869. it's just too easy.

  870. Because they had

  871. been living

  872. the life of works

  873. before their doctrine

  874. stated that they

  875. had to do works.

  876. They had to do

  877. good things

  878. to credit

  879. to their account

  880. to credit

  881. toward their

  882. righteousness.

  883. And the church

  884. at that time

  885. had made people

  886. believe this

  887. by manipulating people.

  888. And so Martin Luther

  889. comes along

  890. and Calvin

  891. comes along

  892. and all these

  893. reformers

  894. come along

  895. and they say

  896. no that's not

  897. the way it works.

  898. You get to

  899. receive justification.

  900. It's an act.

  901. It's something

  902. that God

  903. declares us

  904. righteous

  905. because of our

  906. faith.

  907. And they're saying

  908. no that's just

  909. too easy.

  910. You just trust

  911. and that's it.

  912. And it's the same

  913. question that these

  914. Judaizers were asking

  915. in Galatians chapter 2.

    Galatians 2 chapter mention

  916. Aren't you

  917. undercutting the

  918. obedience to the

  919. law?

  920. And Paul says

  921. no.

  922. Through faith in

  923. Christ we're

  924. accepted before

  925. God.

  926. Number one.

  927. Number two.

  928. Through faith in

  929. Christ.

  930. And this is where

  931. it gets really

  932. really really good

  933. for the life

  934. of the believer.

  935. Through faith in

  936. Christ we are

  937. alive to

  938. God.

  939. So not only

  940. are we accepted

  941. before God

  942. because of

  943. justification.

  944. We are alive

  945. because of our

  946. faith in Christ.

  947. We are alive

  948. to God.

  949. And being alive

  950. to God means

  951. that our

  952. life has been

  953. transformed by

  954. Christ.

  955. And what the

  956. work that he has

  957. done in our

  958. hearts and in

  959. our lives.

  960. And in verse

  961. 18 Paul says

  962. if I rebuild

  963. what I destroyed

  964. I prove that I

  965. am a lawbreaker

  966. for through the

  967. law I died

  968. to the law

  969. so that I

  970. might live.

  971. So that I

  972. might live

  973. for God.

  974. Died to the

  975. law so that I

  976. might live for

  977. God.

  978. Paul is saying

  979. that because of

  980. our faith that

  981. we are accepted

  982. before God.

  983. But faith is

  984. also the

  985. only way that

  986. we can live

  987. to God.

  988. It's the only

  989. way to experience

  990. true life in

  991. God.

  992. You see Paul

  993. is leaving no

  994. room here for

  995. a one time

  996. decision that

  997. you walk down

  998. the aisle,

  999. maybe you

  1000. prayed a

  1001. prayer and

  1002. you lived

  1003. your life just

  1004. like everybody

  1005. else.

  1006. There's no

  1007. room for that

  1008. in Paul's

  1009. theology.

  1010. There's no

  1011. room for that

  1012. in Paul's

  1013. doctrine.

  1014. It's not

  1015. possible because

  1016. if we are

  1017. saved by faith

  1018. and we also

  1019. live by faith,

  1020. our works

  1021. are a result

  1022. of our

  1023. faith in

  1024. other words.

  1025. And then

  1026. Paul gives

  1027. us a loaded

  1028. verse in

  1029. verse 20

  1030. and I

  1031. encourage you

  1032. if you've

  1033. not already

  1034. hidden this

  1035. scripture in

  1036. your heart,

  1037. if you've

  1038. not already

  1039. hidden this

  1040. word in

  1041. your heart,

  1042. that you

  1043. hide it in

  1044. your heart

  1045. this week.

  1046. It says,

  1047. I have been

  1048. crucified with

  1049. Christ and

  1050. I no longer

  1051. live but

  1052. Christ lives

  1053. in me.

  1054. And the

  1055. life that I

  1056. now live in

  1057. the flesh,

  1058. I live by

  1059. faith in

  1060. the Son of

  1061. God who

  1062. loved me and

  1063. gave himself

  1064. up for me.

  1065. What an

  1066. amazing verse.

  1067. I've been

  1068. crucified with

  1069. Christ.

  1070. What does

  1071. that mean?

  1072. What does it

  1073. mean to be

  1074. crucified with

  1075. Christ?

  1076. Does that

  1077. mean that

  1078. Paul was

  1079. there with

  1080. Jesus hanging

  1081. on the cross

  1082. with him?

  1083. No, he

  1084. wasn't physically

  1085. there with

  1086. him.

  1087. But it

  1088. means that

  1089. we are

  1090. dead and

  1091. we're alive.

  1092. That makes

  1093. sense.

  1094. We're dead,

  1095. but let me

  1096. explain.

  1097. We are dead

  1098. to our

  1099. sin.

  1100. We are

  1101. dead to

  1102. sin and

  1103. alive to

  1104. Christ.

  1105. And this

  1106. is why

  1107. justification is

  1108. so important

  1109. for us to

  1110. understand because

  1111. justification is

  1112. different than

  1113. forgiveness.

  1114. Justification,

  1115. they're related,

  1116. but justification

  1117. is different than

  1118. forgiveness.

  1119. And this,

  1120. that when you

  1121. commit something

  1122. wrong, you

  1123. have to ask for

  1124. forgiveness, and

  1125. then you go out

  1126. and commit another

  1127. wrong, you have

  1128. to come back

  1129. and ask for

  1130. forgiveness again.

  1131. Forgiveness is

  1132. kind of a one-time

  1133. thing.

  1134. Justification is

  1135. all-encompassing.

  1136. In justification,

  1137. you're justified.

  1138. You're declared

  1139. not guilty.

  1140. You do something

  1141. wrong, God's still

  1142. looking at you

  1143. saying, not

  1144. guilty, accepted,

  1145. peace with me.

  1146. There's no

  1147. condemnation for

  1148. those who are in

  1149. Christ Jesus, for

  1150. the law of the

  1151. spirit of life has

  1152. set you free from

  1153. the law of the

  1154. spirit of death.

  1155. And over and

  1156. over and over and

  1157. over again, in the

  1158. New Testament, you

  1159. see this justification.

  1160. You see not

  1161. guilty.

  1162. You see accepted

  1163. before God.

  1164. Accepted before God.

  1165. Not guilty.

  1166. Do we believe that

  1167. in our lives

  1168. tonight?

  1169. I mean, do we

  1170. really believe that?

  1171. That we're accepted

  1172. before God?

  1173. God, some of us,

  1174. we might just need

  1175. to just let that

  1176. soak in to our

  1177. hearts right now.

  1178. You, despite your

  1179. sin, despite all the

  1180. things that you've

  1181. done in your life,

  1182. you're found

  1183. acceptable before God.

  1184. That you are

  1185. accepted by the God

  1186. of the universe,

  1187. a perfect and holy

  1188. God.

  1189. God, I think

  1190. sometimes we

  1191. struggle to fully

  1192. believe this and

  1193. fully realize this

  1194. in our lives.

  1195. We like to hang

  1196. on to our guilt,

  1197. don't we?

  1198. We like to hang

  1199. on to that shame

  1200. that we experience.

  1201. And so often we

  1202. think of our lives

  1203. like this cosmic

  1204. lifelong game of

  1205. Simon Says, where

  1206. if we don't do

  1207. what God says,

  1208. then we're out for

  1209. the count.

  1210. We have to sit

  1211. out for a while

  1212. until we can feel

  1213. righteous again.

1214. And we have to sit

  1215. out until we're

  1216. made right before

  1217. God again.

  1218. And that's not what

  1219. the doctrine of

  1220. justification teaches

  1221. us.

  1222. We've been bought

  1223. with a price and

  1224. we have already

  1225. been forgiven.

  1226. I used to use

  1227. this illustration

  1228. where I used a

  1229. cinder block.

  1230. Is Wes still in

  1231. here?

  1232. Wes, you might

  1233. remember this

  1234. illustration because

  1235. you're the first

  1236. person I used as

  1237. an example.

  1238. I don't know if

  1239. you remember that

  1240. or not.

1241. But I used to use

  1242. an illustration

  1243. with a cinder block

  1244. and I was all

  1245. excited about using

  1246. this illustration.

  1247. So I went into

  1248. the hardware store

1249. and I went in and

  1250. I was like, I told

  1251. the guy when I

  1252. walked in, he was

  1253. like, how can I

  1254. help you?

  1255. I said, you know,

  1256. this is what I

  1257. need.

  1258. I need a cinder block.

  1259. I need about 10

  1260. feet of the

  1261. heaviest duty chain

  1262. that you have.

  1263. And I need a

  1264. bolt cutter.

  1265. And the guy

  1266. looked at me

  1267. really strange and

  1268. he was like,

  1269. almost like with a

  1270. worried look.

  1271. He's like, I need

  1272. to ask you

  1273. something.

  1274. You're not

  1275. planning on sinking

  1276. somebody in a

  1277. lake, are you?

  1278. And I could look

  1279. back on that and

1280. see this does look a

  1281. little bit suspicious.

  1282. You could chain

  1283. somebody to a

  1284. cinder block and

  1285. sink them alive if

  1286. you wanted to, I

  1287. guess.

  1288. But no, I wasn't.

1289. I was trying to use

  1290. a sermon illustration

1291. so it was kind of

  1292. cool because I got

1293. to explain that to a

  1294. guy who was probably

  1295. lost in a hardware

  1296. store.

  1297. But the illustration

  1298. was this.

  1299. Before Christ, we

  1300. were bound up in

  1301. our sin.

  1302. That's what the

  1303. chains resemble.

  1304. You're chained to

  1305. this weight and

  1306. this guilt that you

  1307. carry around before

  1308. Christ.

  1309. You're chained to

  1310. it.

  1311. And the picture there

  1312. was after Christ.

  1313. And what I had, I

  1314. actually had Wes,

  1315. because he was in

  1316. the student ministry

  1317. where I was teaching

  1318. this.

  1319. Do you remember

  1320. this, Wes?

  1321. You don't remember

  1322. this at all?

  1323. Amazing.

  1324. It had no impact

  1325. on the students who

  1326. were there.

  1327. That's good to

  1328. know.

  1329. All right, so

  1330. anyways, you take

  1331. the cinder block and

1332. you put it on to

  1333. Wes.

  1334. And he basically

  1335. at the very

  1336. beginning or toward

  1337. the beginning of

  1338. the sermon, through

  1339. the whole sermon, you

  1340. had him sitting up

  1341. there.

  1342. You remember it

  1343. now?

  1344. Because you remember

  1345. you didn't just stand

  1346. there the whole time.

1347. He sat down on the

  1348. cinder block because

  1349. that's the best that

  1350. you can do.

  1351. You can't stand up

  1352. there the whole

  1353. sermon.

  1354. And so in the

  1355. sermon, the reality

  1356. is that Jesus, because

1357. of the work that he

1358. did on the cross, you

  1359. are broken free from

  1360. that guilt and that

  1361. shame, from that sin,

  1362. the reality of sin.

  1363. You're broken free

  1364. from that.

  1365. You no longer have

  1366. to be chained to

  1367. it.

  1368. You're no longer

  1369. bound up in that

  1370. sin that you are

  1371. before you're a

  1372. believer in Christ

  1373. Jesus.

1374. And so that was the

  1375. visual picture there,

  1376. that you no longer

  1377. have to carry the

  1378. weight and the guilt

  1379. of sins.

  1380. That's where the

  1381. bolt cutters came

  1382. in.

  1383. And as I recall, I

  1384. was very careful to

  1385. avoid your Achilles as

  1386. you sat there and

  1387. pinching that thing

  1388. down.

1389. But the reality of the

  1390. whole thing is, the

1391. reality is that we are

  1392. free from that sin.

  1393. And ultimately, we

1394. can pick it up and

  1395. we can carry it.

  1396. I brought something

  1397. over here.

  1398. The best thing I

  1399. could find.

  1400. I had a cinder block

  1401. in my crawl space

  1402. underneath my house,

1403. but it was dirty and

  1404. it wasn't real good.

1405. You can pick up the

  1406. weight and you can

  1407. carry it around with

  1408. you.

  1409. Potentially for your

  1410. whole life.

  1411. You can carry around

  1412. this weight of guilt

  1413. and shame.

1414. And it's going to be

  1415. really hard because

  1416. it's hard to walk

  1417. into a building like

  1418. we're in right now

  1419. and to be amongst

  1420. other believers and

  1421. to worship God,

  1422. holding the weight of

  1423. the guilt and the

  1424. shame that you carry

  1425. around in your life.

1426. And you find it hard to

  1427. share with unbelievers.

  1428. Because you're sharing

  1429. with them and you're

  1430. saying, you know,

1431. and Jesus is the best

  1432. way to life.

  1433. Ignore what I'm

  1434. holding here.

1435. But Jesus is the best

  1436. way to life.

1437. He's the best way to

  1438. live.

  1439. All the while you're

  1440. holding this guilt and

  1441. this shame.

  1442. Don't truly believe in

  1443. the justification that

  1444. Christ, this Christ's

1445. work on the cross that

  1446. justified you.

1447. You go on a mission

  1448. trip and you say,

  1449. I don't know how I'm

  1450. going to get this

  1451. through the TSA,

  1452. the metal detectors,

  1453. the airport security,

  1454. but I'm going.

  1455. I'm getting on an

  1456. airplane.

  1457. I'm going to have a

1458. lot of explain to do

1459. when I get to customs

  1460. in China.

  1461. But I'm going.

  1462. I'm going on a

  1463. mission trip and I'm

  1464. carrying this with me.

  1465. The reality is we

  1466. don't have to carry

  1467. this anymore.

1468. If you want to pick

1469. it up, you can pick

  1470. it up.

1471. But I'm here to tell

  1472. you tonight that it

  1473. was endaled to the

  1474. cross when Jesus died.

1475. And you can pick it

1476. up and carry it if you

  1477. want to carry it.

1478. but it was nailed to

  1479. the cross and you

  1480. no longer are bound

  1481. to the weight of

  1482. guilt and shame in

  1483. your life.

  1484. And let that speak

  1485. truth over you right

  1486. now.

  1487. Because some of us

  1488. came in here tonight

  1489. laden with guilt and

  1490. laden with shame.

1491. And maybe you came in

  1492. here tonight thinking

1493. that you are out of

1494. the game for a little

  1495. bit because you sinned

  1496. earlier, maybe right

  1497. before you came.

  1498. Maybe you sinned at

  1499. some point this week

  1500. and you know that

  1501. you're carrying around

  1502. that guilt and that

  1503. shame and you brought

1504. it in here with you

  1505. tonight.

  1506. And I'm telling you,

  1507. this doctrine of

  1508. justification should be

  1509. made real in our

  1510. lives.

  1511. And whatever we

  1512. brought in here, we

  1513. no longer have to

  1514. carry that with us

  1515. because Jesus carried

1516. it in him on the

  1517. cross.

  1518. This is what God's

  1519. word tells us in

  1520. 1 Peter 2.4, that he

  1521. himself bore our

1522. sins in his body on

  1523. the tree that we

1524. might die to sin and

  1525. live to righteousness.

  1526. For by his wounds

  1527. you were healed.

1528. By his wounds, by the

  1529. sacrifice of Christ, you

  1530. were healed.

  1531. And that's the picture

  1532. of justification.

  1533. And it's so important

  1534. that when we approach

  1535. the text of Scripture

1536. that we see, when we

  1537. see these tough

  1538. commands in Scripture,

  1539. these commands that

  1540. are sometimes hard for

1541. us to follow, that we

  1542. don't walk away saying,

1543. if I do these things

  1544. and I'm accepted before

  1545. God, why?

  1546. Because that's

  1547. legalism.

  1548. We don't walk away

  1549. ignoring these truths

  1550. because that's

  1551. hypocrisy.

  1552. Instead, we walk away

  1553. with our hearts running

  1554. toward Christ saying,

  1555. Jesus, you are

  1556. everything that I need

1557. and I need more of

1558. you and more of you

  1559. each and every second

  1560. of my life.

1561. and I need you to

  1562. show me the places

1563. in my life where my

  1564. life doesn't line up

  1565. with the gospel.

  1566. Show me the places

1567. where I need to be

  1568. more conformed into

  1569. the image of your

  1570. Son.

1571. I need more of you.

  1572. And in doing so,

1573. we honor God with a

  1574. life that's not just

  1575. justified by works.

  1576. It's justified by the

  1577. grace of Christ that

  1578. comes through faith,

  1579. only through faith in

  1580. Christ Jesus.

  1581. And it's for this

  1582. purpose that we are

  1583. saved by grace alone,

  1584. through faith alone,

  1585. and in Christ alone.

  1586. Let's pray together.

  1587. Amen.
