  1. Okay, I've got a confession to make. I'm not a coffee guy. I don't really know a lot about coffee.

  2. If you make it for me, I might drink it, like the guys who live with me make really good coffee.

  3. And I'll ask them sometimes, like, hey, are you going to make any coffee?

  4. And they're like, no, but you can make some if you want.

  5. And I'm like, that's okay, never mind.

  6. That's as far as my love for it goes.

  7. But because I am ignorant of coffee, like I drank some a little while ago because it's kind of just fading.

  8. And now I'm like just really messed up.

  9. So we'll see how it goes tonight.

  10. But a little out of sorts.

  11. Yeah.

  12. Well, tonight we're talking about sanctification.

  13. What a word.

  14. You know, what a confusing word at times.

  15. And I think if I have a title for tonight, it would be sanctification, becoming who we are in Christ.

  16. So becoming who we are in Christ.

  17. So I kind of have an introduction, and then I have four different, or five, something like that, questions we're going to look at just on this.

  18. But to understand what sanctification is, we need to ask another question, and that is, what does holy mean?

  19. What does holiness mean?

  20. And when we talk about the holiness of God, what does that mean?

  21. And from that, we need to, from there, we can kind of continue on about what sanctification is.

  22. But the Old Testament root, the Hebrew word for holy, it implies a lot, okay?

  23. There's not just one fixed definition that you can actually put on for what holy means.

  24. It's really quite difficult.

  25. But when talking about holy, at least in the root word in the Hebrew, it's an idea that means to be separated,

  26. to be utterly different and distinct from anything else, and to be utterly devoted to something else.

  27. And when applied to God, it's meant that God's holiness is His separateness.

  28. It's the way of God being in a class all by Himself.

  29. If you have to pick one term almost to define who God is, it's holy.

  30. He's totally separated from everything that is not God, in a way, if you want to put it that way.

  31. He's being in a class all by Himself.

  32. And because He is in a class all by Himself, that makes Him, like, supremely, infinitely valuable,

  33. because of Him being in this category by Himself.

  34. He's distinct from all else that is not God.

  35. So it kind of implies transcendence, otherness.

  36. It's a part of God's very essence.

  37. There's no lack or deficiency in God at all.

  38. I'm going to just read out of Revelation 4.8.

  39. You don't have to turn there.

  40. But there's this scene going on around the throne of God.

  41. And there's these angelic beings that are flying around and they're crying out to God.

  42. It says,

  43. The four living creatures, each of them has six wings, are full of eyes all around and within.

  44. And day and night they never cease to say,

  45. Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come.

  46. So that's what is constantly going on.

  47. It says they don't stop doing that.

  48. That's constantly going on around the throne of God.

  49. These creatures are crying out to God,

  50. Holy, holy, holy.

  51. And so, if you wanted to limit holiness just to being separate,

  52. they've got to be saying more than, like, separated, separated, separated.

  53. It just doesn't roll out like that.

  54. It implies a lot more.

  55. It's a holiness is where our language kind of runs out and we can't describe who God is anymore.

  56. And we're kind of like, we've reached the edge.

  57. And then beyond that is just the vastness of who God is.

  58. It really, we can't actually put our hands on it.

  59. But holiness does mean that God is, like, utterly separated from all things that are sinful,

  60. all things that are evil.

  61. He's in a completely different category in and of himself.

  62. And Isaiah had a similar experience.

  63. Like when he was in the throne room of God,

  64. he saw angelic beings, seraphim, flying around and crying out,

  65. Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty.

  66. The whole earth is full of his glory.

  67. And he was confronting with that.

  68. If you were here a long time ago for one of the first messages,

  69. that was a passage we actually looked at.

  70. And a lot of us, you know, we have this idea that we just kind of want to, like, run right upon God.

  71. We want to see God.

  72. We want to behold God.

  73. And kind of almost an idea of just, like, waltzing right into his presence.

  74. But everyone in Scripture seems to have a completely different kind of experience.

  75. Because whenever they encounter God, whenever they encounter the holiness of God,

  76. they're utterly terrified.

  77. Like, they are, some of them almost, some of the experiences almost even kill them.

  78. Because that's how powerful it was.

  79. And this holiness of God is in a category in and of itself.

  80. And that's why in Isaiah, all throughout Isaiah, which I'm kind of reading right now,

  81. I didn't count how many times, but I mean, I at least saw it seven times,

  82. where God says something kind of like this,

  83. To whom then will you compare to me, that I should be like him, says the Holy One.

  84. God's always, like, daring people to find something to compare to him.

  85. And it's because he is completely other, completely separate, completely immorally pure, is God.

  86. So look at this. Turn to 1 Peter, chapter 1.

    1 Peter 1 chapter mention

  87. So, God is holy means God is God.

  88. If you want to think about it that way.

  89. Yeah, so, what does this have to do with sanctification?

  90. Well, since God is holy, he calls his people also to be holy.

  91. Those who belong to him, those who are in Christ.

  92. So, 1 Peter 1, verse 14.

    1 Peter 1:14

  93. It says this,

  94. As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance.

  95. So don't be like you were before you were a Christian.

  96. But as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct.

  97. Since it is written, you shall be holy, for I am holy.

  98. And if you call on him as Father who judges impartially according to each one's deeds,

  99. conduct yourselves with fear throughout the time of your exile,

  100. knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers,

  101. not with perishable things such as silver or gold,

  102. but with that which is the precious blood of Christ,

  103. like the lamb without blemish or spot.

  104. So, it says basically here, God is saying,

  105. You will be holy, for I am holy.

  106. And that's quoted out of Leviticus 11, 44.

  107. It says this,

  108. Yahweh, your God, He is holy.

  109. You must consecrate yourselves because He is holy, for He is holy.

  110. So, it's this idea that because God is holy,

  111. He now calls His children, those who belong to Him, to also walk in holiness.

  112. If you look at the language here,

  113. it kind of carries the language of like children to a father.

  114. And you see that here?

  115. He commands us to be holy,

  116. but He's not giving us an arbitrary command.

  117. He's basically saying that like,

  118. Look, if you belong to God, holiness is a family trait.

  119. Like, holiness is like the spiritual DNA that we have received from God,

  120. and it should be in us.

  121. If we truly are born of God,

  122. if we truly have been born again by the Spirit,

  123. then like His DNA has been put in us.

  124. And so, He's saying,

  125. Walk as the children that you are.

  126. Walk as those who have been changed by God.

  127. And then He goes on, He says,

  128. Because, you know,

  129. you were ransomed by the precious blood of Christ.

  130. Like, you were made His,

  131. you were made His child through the precious blood of Christ.

  132. So, you were bought.

  133. Right?

  134. You no longer belong to yourself.

  135. You belong to God.

  136. And you want it to be that way.

  137. Right?

  138. The freest person in the world is the one who's a slave to a perfect master.

  139. Right?

  140. We want to belong to God.

  141. And we want to be who He's called us to be.

  142. The spiritual DNA that's in us is holiness.

  143. So, point being here,

  144. whenever the New Testament talks about sanctification,

  145. it's basically talking about holiness.

  146. Okay?

  147. That's kind of what the focus is.

  148. You can't really understand it without the others.

  149. So, let's get into some of the things here.

  150. The first question,

  151. which we're going to kind of unpack this with,

  152. is what is sanctification?

  153. What is sanctification?

  154. And so,

  155. just talk about terms a little bit.

  156. Don't get lost in this.

  157. I tried to condense this as much as I could.

  158. But,

  159. the English word sanctify,

  160. or sanctification,

  161. comes from the Latin word,

  162. you know,

  163. sanctus.

  164. And it,

  165. which means holy in Latin,

  166. sanctus.

  167. But,

  168. the problem is,

  169. like,

  170. in our English language,

  171. the adjective holy,

  172. we don't have a way of,

  173. like,

  174. converting that into a verb.

  175. We don't have,

  176. um,

  177. holification.

  178. You know,

  179. it doesn't exist,

  180. like,

  181. in the English language.

  182. But,

  183. um,

  184. but in the New Testament,

  185. the adjective for holy

  186. can also be made into a verb,

  187. which means to make holy,

  188. or to set apart as holy.

  189. It can be turned into a verb.

  190. So,

  191. so,

  192. the adjective holy

  193. can be implied as

  194. the condition of being holy,

  195. right?

  196. The condition of being holy,

  197. holiness,

  198. or it can imply

  199. to the process of becoming holy.

  200. It's,

  201. uh,

  202. either one of those,

  203. which would be like holification,

  204. uh,

  205. which doesn't really exist.

  206. Again,

  207. if the word existed.

  208. So,

  209. we use sanctification.

  210. That's,

  211. basically,

  212. what we're,

  213. what we're getting this word from.

  214. Um,

  215. so,

  216. the crucial point is this,

  217. all right?

  218. Anytime you read in the New Testament,

  219. the word sanctify,

  220. you know they're talking about holiness.

  221. That's what,

  222. that's what you need to,

  223. to kind of read into

  224. when you're,

  225. when you're reading those words.

  226. Okay?

  227. So,

  228. therefore,

  229. the goal tonight

  230. is to talk about

  231. not just being holy,

  232. but like becoming holy.

  233. It's,

  234. it's both of those.

  235. Uh,

  236. as the New Testament talks about it.

  237. And so,

  238. the New Testament refers to our holiness

  239. in both senses,

  240. a condition of being holy

  241. and becoming holy.

  242. All right?

  243. So,

  244. uh,

  245. but,

  246. if you start really researching this

  247. and studying this,

  248. you're going to find like the word

  249. sanctify,

  250. sanctification,

  251. is used for like a lot of different

  252. kind of things.

  253. And you're going to be like,

  254. how do you put all this together?

  255. It's not as clear a term as like

  256. regeneration or justification.

  257. It's really broad.

  258. But,

  259. it can be said

  260. that there's two ways

  261. that it occurs the most.

  262. There's two different ways.

  263. So,

  264. so in what ways

  265. does scripture speak about

  266. sanctification?

  267. Okay,

  268. now,

  269. this is the two that you want to write

  270. underneath that first title.

  271. What is sanctification?

  272. Excuse me.

  273. But the first one is

  274. called definitive

  275. sanctification.

  276. A big word,

  277. definitive,

  278. right?

  279. Try to spell that,

  280. whatever.

  281. Definitive sanctification.

  282. All right,

  283. and I'm just going to read

  284. a definition of it for you

  285. by John Frame.

  286. It's not really that long,

  287. but

  288. in this sense,

  289. definitive sanctification

  290. is a once-for-all event

  291. simultaneously

  292. with regeneration

  293. that transfers us

  294. from the sphere of sin

  295. to the sphere of God's holiness.

  296. From the kingdom of Satan

  297. into the kingdom of God.

  298. It's this act

  299. that God does himself

  300. where he like takes us

  301. from the realm of sin,

  302. the realm of Satan,

  303. and moves us to

  304. the realm of the kingdom of God.

  305. It's like a transfer

  306. that he's done.

  307. He's made us

  308. like his people.

  309. I'll give you an example of this.

  310. In 1 Peter 2,

  311. it says this.

  312. Are you already in Peter?

  313. Are you still in Peter?

  314. Oh, how about that?

  315. Go ahead and flip over

  316. to chapter 1,

  317. verse 2.

  318. Excuse me,

  319. chapter 2,

  320. verse 9.

  321. All these words

  322. are blending together.

  323. Chapter 2,

  324. verse 9.

  325. It says this.

  326. And this is one way

  327. we can think of

  328. definitive sanctification.

  329. But you are a chosen race,

  330. a royal priesthood,

  331. a holy nation.

  332. See that?

  333. A people for God's own possession

  334. that you may proclaim

  335. the excellencies of him

  336. who called you out of darkness

  337. into his marvelous light.

  338. Once you were not a people,

  339. but now you are God's people.

  340. Once you had not received mercy,

  341. but now you have received mercy.

  342. You see that?

  343. It's like this transfer

  344. of like you were this

  345. and now you're this.

  346. God has like brought you there.

  347. He set you aside

  348. to be his people

  349. and to live for his purposes.

  350. That's one way

  351. that this is used.

  352. But I didn't intend

  353. for you to turn there,

  354. but turn to 1 Corinthians 6

  355. real quick.

  356. I'll show you another

  357. example of this.

  358. 1 Corinthians 6.

  359. Then go to verse 9.

  360. Alright?

  361. So it says,

  362. Or do you not know

  363. that the unrighteous

  364. will not inherit

  365. the kingdom of God?

  366. Rhetorical question.

  367. Do not be deceived,

  368. neither sexual, immoral,

  369. nor adulterers,

  370. nor men who practice

  371. homosexuality,

  372. nor thieves,

  373. nor the greedy,

  374. nor drunkards,

  375. nor revilers,

  376. nor swindlers

  377. will inherit

  378. the kingdom of God.

  379. Okay?

  380. So he's saying like

  381. that's,

  382. that's,

  383. those kind of actions

  384. are manifestations

  385. of someone's sinful condition.

  386. They come out of us

  387. because we are sinful.

  388. So he's saying

  389. if you live by those things,

  390. if that's what's coming

  391. out of your life constantly

  392. and that's what you live for,

  393. he's like,

  394. you won't have,

  395. you won't not inherit

  396. the kingdom of God.

  397. But then he changes

  398. his kind of tone

  399. and he says,

  400. and such were some of you,

  401. the Christians he's talking to,

  402. but you were washed,

  403. you were sanctified,

  404. you were justified

  405. in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ

  406. by the Spirit of our God.

  407. Pretty awesome.

  408. Like a picture of like us

  409. moving from this realm

  410. to that realm.

  411. That's who a lot of us were.

  412. Some of you may still be

  413. in that realm,

  414. but God has all the power

  415. to move you into

  416. his realm,

  417. the kingdom of light

  418. and to be a part

  419. of the holy nation,

  420. his own possession.

  421. So,

  422. so definitive sanctification

  423. redeems us,

  424. okay,

  425. this is important.

  426. Definitive sanctification

  427. redeems us

  428. from the ruling power

  429. of sin in our life

  430. and it frees us

  431. from the slavery of sin.

  432. Okay,

  433. so it,

  434. so we still sin,

  435. okay,

  436. right,

  437. as believers,

  438. we all know that,

  439. that's where we're kind of,

  440. where we're kind of going here.

  441. But,

  442. but it's not the same

  443. like as it was before,

  444. before we were in Christ.

  445. The power of sin

  446. has been broken.

  447. So,

  448. if you really have become

  449. a believer

  450. and God's Spirit

  451. is in you,

  452. you should notice

  453. over time,

  454. like,

  455. sin weakening

  456. in your life

  457. in certain areas.

  458. Not totally being demolished,

  459. but like,

  460. God's power

  461. and God's Spirit

  462. inside of you

  463. is causing you

  464. to have more

  465. and more victory

  466. over those sins

  467. in your life,

  468. in your actual life.

  469. So,

  470. and that's because

  471. of definitive sanctification.

  472. God has

  473. caused you

  474. to be born again.

  475. Some of you were here

  476. when Nathan,

  477. if you weren't here

  478. when Nathan preached

  479. on regeneration,

  480. I don't know

  481. if we have the sermons

  482. up yet,

  483. but do we have

  484. the sermons up yet?

  485. Okay,

  486. working on it?

  487. Yeah,

  488. but,

  489. but if that has

  490. happened to you,

  491. you now are not

  492. a slave to sin anymore,

  493. you're not a slave

  494. to Satan anymore,

  495. you belong to God

  496. and by His power

  497. you can like walk

  498. in victory over sin.

  499. So,

  500. it destroyed the dominion

  501. of sin over your life.

  502. So,

  503. sanctification in this sense

  504. is decisive

  505. and it's a radical break

  506. with the power

  507. and pleasure of sin,

  508. okay?

  509. It's like a,

  510. and God does this,

  511. it's an act that God does

  512. at regeneration

  513. as He moves us

  514. from one kingdom

  515. to another.

  516. So,

  517. that's the first one.

  518. Thank God for that one.

  519. That's the first way

  520. it's used.

  521. We've been set apart

  522. as God's people

  523. for His purposes.

  524. Sorry.

  525. The second way

  526. this is mostly used,

  527. alright,

  528. and this is probably

  529. the one that we're

  530. most familiar with,

  531. is progressive

  532. sanctification.

  533. Progressive

  534. sanctification.

  535. And Wayne Grudem,

  536. he defines it

  537. this way,

  538. it's a progressive

  539. work of God

  540. and man,

  541. key phrase there,

  542. work of God

  543. and man,

  544. that makes us

  545. more and more

  546. free from sin

  547. and like Christ

  548. in our actual lives,

  549. like right now.

  550. Read that again.

  551. It's a progressive

  552. work of God

  553. and man

  554. that makes us

  555. more and more

  556. free from sin

  557. and like Christ

  558. in our actual lives.

  559. So,

  560. so in definitive

  561. sanctification,

  562. it's all the work

  563. of God.

  564. Justification,

  565. all the work

  566. of God.

  567. You don't cooperate

  568. at all.

  569. Being born again,

  570. completely the work

  571. of God.

  572. But in sanctification,

  573. at least in this sense,

  574. we do cooperate

  575. with God.

  576. We exercise

  577. our new natures

  578. and the new desires

  579. and wills

  580. that we have

  581. that were given

  582. to us

  583. to love God.

  584. So what?

  585. So guess what?

  586. We're not puppets,

  587. right?

  588. We're not machines

  589. dangling around.

  590. We have real

  591. actions.

  592. Our actions

  593. mean things.

  594. And we can choose

  595. to love God

  596. or choose to

  597. disobey God,

  598. even as believers.

  599. So,

  600. in this sense,

  601. we can think of

  602. sanctification

  603. as the outworking

  604. of the new life

  605. that we have

  606. in Christ.

  607. Okay?

  608. It's like

  609. the new life

  610. that was given

  611. to us

  612. in regeneration,

  613. we're actually

  614. now moving

  615. more and more

  616. into our new nature

  617. that was given

  618. to us

  619. when we were born

  620. again.

  621. And this involves

  622. like a gradual,

  623. incremental,

  624. progressive work,

  625. spiritual work

  626. inside of us

  627. when we're still

  628. putting to death

  629. remaining sin

  630. in our lives.

  631. All of us still

  632. have remaining sin

  633. in our lives.

  634. I know I do.

  635. But by God's power,

  636. what I'm able to do

  637. is I can rely

  638. on His strength

  639. and I can have

  640. more and more

  641. victory over

  642. those particular sins

  643. that are in my life.

  644. And I can become

  645. more like Christ

  646. in this life.

  647. So we do play a role.

  648. We cooperate.

  649. Alright?

  650. Let's just say

  651. you're facing

  652. that moment

  653. of temptation.

  654. Right?

  655. It's before you.

  656. And everything in you

  657. is wanting to go for it.

  658. Like your flesh,

  659. which actually

  660. is not your nature.

  661. That's a whole new talk.

  662. You have one nature now.

  663. Right?

  664. It lives in

  665. corrupted,

  666. sinful flesh,

  667. but you have

  668. one spiritual nature.

  669. And that's the new man

  670. that's come from

  671. the act of regeneration.

  672. So you're faced

  673. with temptation.

  674. Alright?

  675. Now you have a chance there.

  676. The Holy Spirit,

  677. this is His operation

  678. and us,

  679. by the way.

  680. He's saying like,

  681. don't do this.

  682. This is close enough.

  683. Stop now.

  684. You know this is going

  685. to lead to disaster.

  686. You know that God

  687. is so much better.

  688. Trust me.

  689. Right?

  690. And then He will

  691. begin teaching you

  692. and showing you ways

  693. to get out of that situation.

  694. And what?

  695. You can either say,

  696. okay,

  697. alright,

  698. I'm out of here.

  699. You know,

  700. like whatever it is.

  701. Or you can be like,

  702. you know what?

  703. I really don't want

  704. to fight right now.

  705. So I'm just going

  706. to lay down

  707. and get into my sin.

  708. Right?

  709. So that's an example

  710. of how this works

  711. in reality.

  712. We do play a role.

  713. We cooperate

  714. with the Holy Spirit

  715. as children of God.

  716. And we have to yield

  717. to His work.

  718. I'll turn to

  719. Colossians 3.

  720. I'll show you

  721. an example of this.

  722. Sorry.

  723. Sorry.

  724. So here,

  725. Paul writes,

  726. okay,

  727. to the Christians here,

  728. in light of your new identity

  729. in Christ,

  730. in light of what

  731. Christ has done for you,

  732. because of that,

  733. live this way.

  734. That's kind of what he's saying.

  735. Because of who you are now,

  736. live this way.

  737. Walk this way.

  738. Colossians 3,

    Colossians 3:5

  739. verse 5.

  740. And you'll see

  741. this is a picture

  742. of progressive sanctification.

  743. It says,

  744. put to death,

  745. therefore,

  746. what is earthly in you,

  747. sexual immorality,

  748. impurity,

  749. passion,

  750. evil desire,

  751. and covetousness,

  752. which is idolatry.

  753. On account of these,

  754. the wrath of God

  755. is coming.

  756. In these,

  757. you too,

  758. once walk.

  759. There's that idea of like,

  760. hey, you know what?

  761. You used to be that way.

  762. That's who you were

  763. before Christ.

  764. Then he's making a present

  765. connection.

  766. But he says,

  767. but now,

  768. you must put them

  769. all away.

  770. Anger,

  771. wrath,

  772. malice,

  773. slander,

  774. obscene talk

  775. from your mouth.

  776. Do not lie to one another.

  777. Seeing that you have been,

  778. you have put off

  779. the old self

  780. with its practices,

  781. and you have put on

  782. the new self,

  783. which is being renewed

  784. in the knowledge

  785. after the image

  786. of its creator.

  787. Right?

  788. So,

  789. if you remember the talk

  790. a good while back

  791. when Kyle talked about

  792. sin and the fall of man

  793. and how we were,

  794. man was the shattered

  795. image of God,

  796. the broken image of God,

  797. how we were meant

  798. to reflect who God is,

  799. right?

  800. His holy character

  801. and His dominion.

  802. And sin shattered that.

  803. Okay?

  804. But as believers now,

  805. people that have been

  806. born again,

  807. have a new nature,

  808. most of us sin here,

  809. we can now actually

  810. reflect who God is.

  811. You see that?

  812. It says there

  813. at the end.

  814. It says,

  815. He's being renewed

  816. after the knowledge,

  817. or excuse me,

  818. the knowledge

  819. after the image

  820. of its creator.

  821. We can now reflect

  822. to the world

  823. who God really is.

  824. It's really cool.

  825. We can actually do that

  826. now as believers.

  827. But He says,

  828. you know,

  829. put what's earthly

  830. in you to death.

  831. Stop these things

  832. because

  833. that's not

  834. who you are anymore.

  835. And really sorry

  836. Bible teaching,

  837. which I grew up with a lot

  838. and a lot of us

  839. have been exposed to,

  840. they'll jump immediately

  841. like,

  842. do these,

  843. don't do these,

  844. do these,

  845. don't do these.

  846. But the problem,

  847. a great example of this,

  848. maybe John remembers this,

  849. maybe not,

  850. but a long time ago,

  851. we were teaching

  852. through Ephesians

  853. when we were all

  854. in college,

  855. and the first three chapters

  856. of Ephesians,

  857. okay,

  858. are about who we are

  859. as children of God,

  860. who we are in Christ.

  861. It talks about our identity,

  862. right,

  863. our new identity.

  864. And then the next three chapters

  865. talk about,

  866. now,

  867. in light of who you are,

  868. walk this way.

  869. That's kind of,

  870. this is what the new man

  871. looks like.

  872. So it's a totally different

  873. way of thinking.

  874. It's saying like,

  875. wow,

  876. this is who we are.

  877. You always hear Nathan

  878. and Wes and I say,

  879. you were created to be

  880. and not to do,

  881. and now the being

  882. comes to doing.

  883. This is what we're talking about.

  884. So put to death

  885. these things

  886. that remain in you,

  887. right?

  888. So that's progressive

  889. sanctification.

  890. So,

  891. I'm going to show you

  892. probably one of the wildest

  893. verses in the Scripture,

  894. I think.

  895. It's very interesting.

  896. Look at Hebrews 10

  897. real quick.

  898. Is there any places

  899. where you see

  900. definitive and progressive

  901. sanctification

  902. in the same verse?

  903. And the answer is yes.

  904. That's kind of

  905. mind-boggling here.

  906. But look at

  907. Hebrews 10,

    Hebrews 10:10

  908. verse 10.

  909. So,

  910. these passages

  911. demonstrate how

  912. true Christians

  913. are sanctified,

  914. they are holy,

  915. but then it says

  916. they also are

  917. being sanctified,

  918. they're becoming holy.

  919. It's really a

  920. crazy thing,

  921. but both are true.

  922. So look at verse 10.

  923. And by that

  924. we have been

  925. sanctified

  926. through the offering

  927. of the body

  928. of Jesus Christ

  929. once for all.

  930. See that?

  931. So which one do you think

  932. that's implying to?

  933. It says,

  934. and by that

  935. we will have been

  936. sanctified

  937. through the offering

  938. of the body

  939. of Jesus Christ

  940. once for all.

  941. Which one?

  942. Definitive or progressive?

  943. Someone say something.

  944. Definitive.

  945. Yeah.

  946. He's like

  947. taking us

  948. and moved us here.

  949. Okay?

  950. So then,

  951. in the same chapter,

  952. look at verse 14.

  953. Let's go down

  954. just a little bit.

  955. Here's like the verse

  956. that just is like,

  957. what?

  958. It says,

  959. for by a single offering,

  960. Christ has perfected

  961. for all time

  962. those who are being

  963. sanctified.

  964. Right?

  965. Christ has perfected

  966. for all time

  967. those being

  968. sanctified.

  969. So there is a sense,

  970. right,

  971. by which

  972. we believe in Jesus

  973. and we are sanctified

  974. in this verse.

  975. We are holy.

  976. Right?

  977. But then later on,

  978. like in this verse,

  979. we see that Christians

  980. are both perfected,

  981. we already are holy,

  982. and then we also

  983. are being sanctified.

  984. We're being made holy.

  985. It's pretty crazy.

  986. So one of the greatest

  987. sources of joy

  988. for us as believers

  989. is that

  990. to endure

  991. and keep fighting,

  992. which I think

  993. Chris McKean

  994. is going to talk

  995. about that next week.

  996. You don't want

  997. to miss that.

  998. It's going to be

  999. a good one.

  1000. So where it says,

1001. for by a single offering,

  1002. namely Christ Himself,

  1003. right?

1004. Just look at the verse.

  1005. He has perfected

  1006. for all time

  1007. those being

  1008. sanctified.

  1009. And that's amazing

  1010. because in the same

  1011. sentence,

  1012. right,

  1013. he says we are

  1014. being sanctified

  1015. and that we already

  1016. are perfect.

  1017. Isn't that nuts?

  1018. So being sanctified

  1019. means that we are

  1020. imperfect,

  1021. right,

  1022. in the process

  1023. of,

  1024. but we are

  1025. becoming holy

  1026. but not because,

  1027. but we're not

  1028. fully holy.

  1029. And I'll read you

  1030. this quote by

  1031. John Piper

  1032. on this particular

  1033. verse,

  1034. right?

  1035. The joyful

  1036. encouragement here

  1037. is that the evidence

  1038. of our perfection

  1039. before God

  1040. is not our

  1041. experience perfection

  1042. but our experience

  1043. progress.

  1044. See that?

  1045. I'll read that again.

  1046. The joyful encouragement

  1047. here is that the

  1048. evidence of our

  1049. perfection before God,

  1050. right,

  1051. being holy,

  1052. is not our

  1053. experience perfection.

  1054. Most of us don't

  1055. really experience

1056. what it's like to be

  1057. perfectly holy,

  1058. right?

1059. We don't in this life.

  1060. But he says

  1061. the evidence of our

  1062. perfection before God

  1063. is our experiential

  1064. progress.

  1065. Are you growing?

  1066. That's the evidence

  1067. that you already are

  1068. perfected.

1069. And this is what he

  1070. says,

  1071. the good news

  1072. is that being

  1073. on the way

  1074. is proof that

  1075. we have already

  1076. arrived.

  1077. Pretty awesome.

  1078. The good news

  1079. is that being

  1080. on the way

  1081. is proof that

  1082. we have already

  1083. arrived.

  1084. So don't ask,

  1085. like,

  1086. am I perfectly

  1087. holy yet?

  1088. Because the answer

  1089. is going to say,

  1090. like,

  1091. experientially.

  1092. No,

  1093. you're not.

  1094. But are you

  1095. growing in holiness?

  1096. And you can answer

  1097. yes,

  1098. then that's evidence

  1099. that you've already

  1100. arrived.

  1101. That's kind of

  1102. like what he's

  1103. saying.

  1104. So that's the two

  1105. ways that the

  1106. Bible mostly

  1107. talks about

  1108. sanctification.

  1109. But number

  1110. two,

  1111. the big number

  1112. two,

  1113. second point

  1114. or question,

  1115. what is the

  1116. difference between

  1117. sanctification and

  1118. justification?

  1119. Those are

  1120. serious distinctions.

  1121. You might

  1122. couldn't call

  1123. yourself Christian

  1124. if you don't

  1125. understand,

  1126. at least in

  1127. experience,

  1128. right,

  1129. what these

  1130. differences are.

  1131. There's a big

  1132. difference.

  1133. So we have to

  1134. be careful to

  1135. distinguish the

  1136. two,

  1137. but also not

  1138. to separate

  1139. them.

  1140. We can't

  1141. have one

  1142. without the

  1143. other.

  1144. Some people

  1145. actually want

  1146. to make that

  1147. happen.

  1148. The same thing

  1149. is like light

  1150. and heat from

  1151. the sun.

  1152. You can't

  1153. really separate

  1154. those things.

  1155. The sun

  1156. gives out

  1157. light and

  1158. heat.

  1159. We both

  1160. need those

  1161. things.

  1162. And so

  1163. they're not

  1164. the same,

  1165. but they're

  1166. not separated

  1167. either.

  1168. They're still

  1169. together.

  1170. It's what the

  1171. sun gives

  1172. us,

  1173. right?

  1174. So the

  1175. problem is a

  1176. lot of

  1177. people want

  1178. to say,

  1179. I've been

  1180. justified,

  1181. like I've

  1182. been made

  1183. right before

  1184. God,

  1185. but then

  1186. they actually

  1187. don't experience

  1188. any kind

  1189. of growth

  1190. in this

  1191. life,

  1192. right?

  1193. That can be

  1194. dangerous.

  1195. They want to

  1196. kind of

  1197. separate those

  1198. two things.

  1199. And also,

  1200. at least in

  1201. church history,

  1202. the Roman

  1203. church would

  1204. put sanctification

  1205. before

  1206. justification.

  1207. Saying that

  1208. you actually

  1209. have to,

  1210. like,

  1211. make yourself

  1212. holy enough

  1213. in this

  1214. life to

  1215. actually be

  1216. justified.

  1217. I'm glad

  1218. that's not

  1219. the case.

  1220. It would

  1221. mean that

  1222. we have to,

  1223. like,

  1224. make ourselves

  1225. godly,

  1226. right?

  1227. And that he

  1228. only would

  1229. justify us

  1230. when we

  1231. had made

  1232. ourselves

  1233. godly.

  1234. It's a big

  1235. difference.

  1236. We believe

  1237. that sanctification

  1238. is the evidence

  1239. of justification.

  1240. It's the

  1241. outflow of

  1242. what God

  1243. has done.

  1244. So I'm

  1245. going to

  1246. give you

  1247. some statements,

  1248. okay?

  1249. And just

  1250. differences,

  1251. just to kind

  1252. of make

  1253. a clarification.

  1254. The justification

  1255. versus

  1256. sanctification.

  1257. Justification

  1258. is being

  1259. declared

  1260. righteous

  1261. by God.

  1262. Sanctification

  1263. is being

  1264. made righteous.

  1265. Declared

  1266. and then

  1267. made,

  1268. right?

  1269. Justification

  1270. is about

  1271. God's

  1272. attitude

  1273. to me

  1274. changing.

  1275. Sanctification

  1276. is about

  1277. God

  1278. changing

  1279. us,

  1280. right?

  1281. He

  1282. accepts us

  1283. because of

  1284. what Christ

  1285. has done,

  1286. right?

  1287. Kind of

  1288. the point

  1289. there.

  1290. Justification

  1291. is our

  1292. position or

  1293. status before

  1294. God,

  1295. legally

  1296. speaking.

  1297. But

  1298. sanctification

  1299. is a

  1300. practice that

  1301. continues

  1302. throughout

  1303. our lives.

  1304. It goes

  1305. on and

  1306. on throughout

  1307. this life

  1308. on earth.

  1309. all right?

  1310. So,

  1311. this is a

  1312. big one.

  1313. Justification

  1314. is immediate

  1315. and complete

  1316. upon

  1317. conversion.

  1318. It's like

  1319. that,

  1320. okay?

  1321. It's

  1322. instantaneous

  1323. with being

  1324. born again.

  1325. So,

  1326. what's cool

  1327. about that

  1328. is you

  1329. can't be

  1330. more justified

  1331. today or

  1332. tomorrow than

  1333. the moment

  1334. you first

  1335. believed.

  1336. You can

  1337. have a

  1338. terrible,

  1339. awful day

  1340. and like

  1341. falling to

  1342. grievous

  1343. sin.

  1344. That

  1345. doesn't

  1346. make

  1347. you

  1348. any

  1349. less

  1350. justified

  1351. before

  1352. God

  1353. as

  1354. your

  1355. so-called

  1356. best

  1357. day

  1358. where

  1359. you

  1360. share

  1361. the

  1362. gospel

  1363. with

  1364. five

  1365. people

  1366. and

  1367. you read

  1368. your

  1369. Bible

  1370. for three

  1371. hours.

  1372. You're just

  1373. as justified

  1374. before God

  1375. as you

  1376. always have

  1377. been.

  1378. So,

  1379. that's

  1380. big.

  1381. And so,

  1382. comparing

  1383. that to

  1384. sanctification,

  1385. sanctification

  1386. is a

  1387. progressive

  1388. process.

  1389. It's a

  1390. process.

  1391. We are

  1392. being

  1393. sanctified,

  1394. growing

  1395. into

  1396. holiness.

  1397. then,

  1398. okay,

  1399. justification

  1400. is

  1401. objective.

  1402. Sanctification

  1403. is

  1404. subjective,

  1405. right,

  1406. because we

  1407. cooperate

  1408. with God.

  1409. All right,

  1410. and then

  1411. the last

  1412. one here,

  1413. justification

  1414. is completely

  1415. an act

  1416. of God,

  1417. monergistic,

  1418. God alone.

  1419. Sanctification,

  1420. we actually

  1421. play a role

  1422. by cooperating

  1423. with the

  1424. Holy Spirit

  1425. and growing

  1426. in holiness.

  1427. So,

  1428. those are

  1429. major

  1430. differences.

  1431. If you

  1432. switch those

  1433. around,

  1434. we would

  1435. be in

  1436. trouble,

  1437. because it

  1438. would be

  1439. like God

  1440. standing on

  1441. top of

  1442. Mount Sinai

  1443. saying,

  1444. like,

  1445. you have

  1446. to,

  1447. like,

  1448. climb all

  1449. the way

  1450. up here,

  1451. obey every

  1452. single law

  1453. with your

  1454. heart,

  1455. your mind,

  1456. your soul,

  1457. on your

  1458. own,

  1459. and when

  1460. you get

  1461. up here,

  1462. I'll

  1463. justify you.

  1464. No,

  1465. that's not

  1466. the way the

  1467. Bible actually

  1468. talks about it.

  1469. It says that

  1470. justification

  1471. came first,

  1472. clearly.

  1473. That's what the

  1474. whole Reformation

  1475. was about,

  1476. almost.

  1477. So,

  1478. Luther would argue,

  1479. so,

  1480. all together

  1481. now,

  1482. let's kind

  1483. of put this,

  1484. all these

  1485. statements together.

  1486. All right,

  1487. so,

  1488. when you were

  1489. born again,

  1490. right,

  1491. God raised you

  1492. from spiritual

  1493. death to life.

  1494. Like Lazarus

  1495. being called

  1496. out of the tomb,

  1497. Christ said,

  1498. Lazarus,

  1499. come out,

  1500. and he came

  1501. out.

  1502. And,

  1503. so that's

  1504. regeneration.

  1505. generation.

  1506. The result

  1507. is,

  1508. the new

  1509. life you

  1510. have actually

  1511. breathes air.

  1512. That is

  1513. saving faith.

  1514. The air that

  1515. the new

  1516. person breathes

  1517. is saving

  1518. faith.

  1519. Right?

  1520. That's what

  1521. happens at

  1522. conversion.

  1523. And then once

  1524. we have,

  1525. says what,

  1526. we're justified

  1527. by,

  1528. we were here,

  1529. last week,

  1530. justified by

  1531. what?

  1532. Works or

  1533. faith?

  1534. Faith.

  1535. So we

  1536. were justified

  1537. by faith.

  1538. So when you

  1539. actually have

  1540. saving faith,

  1541. in that moment,

  1542. God justifies

  1543. you.

  1544. It's all like

  1545. this.

  1546. It's not a,

  1547. well,

  1548. I was born

  1549. again,

  1550. but I don't

  1551. think I'm

  1552. justified yet.

  1553. It's like this

  1554. one instantaneous

  1555. act.

  1556. We actually

  1557. just know

  1558. that there's

  1559. some sort

  1560. of sequence

  1561. based on how

  1562. Scripture

  1563. talks about

  1564. it.

  1565. And it

  1566. carries on.

  1567. So if

  1568. we're justified,

  1569. right,

  1570. we've been

  1571. established

  1572. permanently as

  1573. a living,

  1574. breathing,

  1575. new nature,

  1576. child of

  1577. God,

  1578. right?

  1579. And so

  1580. how we put

  1581. sanctification

  1582. into this?

  1583. Sanctification

  1584. is the

  1585. exercising of

  1586. or the

  1587. working out

  1588. of the

  1589. new nature

  1590. in which

  1591. the Holy

  1592. Spirit is

  1593. like our

  1594. trainer.

  1595. He pushes

  1596. us and

  1597. disciplines us

  1598. and encourages

  1599. us as our

  1600. teacher to

  1601. like walk

  1602. more like

  1603. the person

  1604. that we

  1605. now are

  1606. before God.

  1607. If you

  1608. want to

  1609. think about

  1610. it that

  1611. way,

  1612. it's like

  1613. the exercising

  1614. of the

  1615. new man,

  1616. right?

  1617. So another

  1618. example is

  1619. like,

  1620. I mean,

  1621. whatever,

  1622. Jesus might

  1623. have been a

  1624. carpenter,

  1625. maybe,

  1626. I mean,

  1627. his dad was,

  1628. his earthly

  1629. dad was,

  1630. so maybe he

  1631. learned that,

  1632. but there's

  1633. really nothing

  1634. in the

  1635. scripture that

  1636. says that

  1637. Jesus was a

  1638. carpenter,

  1639. but necessarily.

  1640. Let's just

  1641. say that like

  1642. Christ being the

  1643. carpenter,

  1644. he carefully

  1645. crafts us into

  1646. something beautiful,

  1647. right?

  1648. The construction

  1649. is messy,

  1650. and it

  1651. takes time,

  1652. and it

  1653. does hurt

  1654. us from

  1655. time to

  1656. time,

  1657. and he

  1658. has to

  1659. move things

  1660. around,

  1661. but like

  1662. major

  1663. renovations,

  1664. right,

  1665. require,

  1666. you know,

  1667. us to like

  1668. get rid of

  1669. things that

  1670. are in

  1671. us,

  1672. right?

  1673. We need

  1674. to push

  1675. those out

  1676. and allow

  1677. him to

  1678. work.

  1679. And so,

  1680. I read this

  1681. somewhere,

  1682. this is this

  1683. side of

  1684. heaven,

  1685. right?

  1686. We never

  1687. will reach

  1688. complete

  1689. perfection in

  1690. this actual

  1691. life,

  1692. it's not

  1693. going to

  1694. happen.

  1695. But with

  1696. something we

  1697. should strive

  1698. for and

  1699. move into.

  1700. And so,

  1701. God basically

  1702. kind of hangs

  1703. this sign of

  1704. our heart that

  1705. says under

  1706. construction.

  1707. And when we

  1708. go to heaven,

  1709. we go to

  1710. glory,

  1711. which glorification

  1712. will be in

  1713. a few weeks,

  1714. we then will

  1715. be completely

  1716. and fully

  1717. holy,

  1718. perfect,

  1719. sinless.

  1720. That's when

  1721. it's completed.

  1722. So,

  1723. I remember

  1724. this really

  1725. kooky saying,

  1726. all right?

  1727. I remember

  1728. when I was

  1729. an early

  1730. Christian back

  1731. in the

  1732. early 2000s,

  1733. I liked

  1734. him a lot.

  1735. He's a nice

  1736. guy.

  1737. He's kind

  1738. of a traveling

  1739. Baptist

  1740. preacher.

  1741. He was from

  1742. the North

  1743. American Mission

  1744. Board,

  1745. I think.

  1746. He was an

  1747. old guy,

  1748. and he was

  1749. like really,

  1750. he did a

  1751. really good

  1752. exposition of

  1753. John 3,

  1754. I think.

  1755. But then he

  1756. said this,

  1757. all right?

  1758. When God

  1759. saves you,

  1760. there's an

  1761. inward

  1762. transformation,

  1763. which leads

  1764. to an outward

  1765. demonstration,

  1766. not sanctification,

  1767. which leads

  1768. to an upward

  1769. destination.

  1770. When God

  1771. saves you,

  1772. there's an

  1773. inward

  1774. transformation,

  1775. it leads

  1776. to an

  1777. outward

  1778. demonstration,

  1779. which leads

  1780. to an upward

  1781. destination.

  1782. But you

  1783. couldn't say

  1784. that something

  1785. actually happened

  1786. inside of you

  1787. if there was

  1788. not something

  1789. showing for

  1790. that.

  1791. Big difference.

  1792. So,

  1793. you can

  1794. remember it

  1795. that way,

  1796. maybe.

  1797. So,

  1798. number three,

  1799. what is our

  1800. role in

  1801. sanctification?

  1802. Right?

  1803. Tell me what

  1804. to do.

  1805. So,

  1806. what is our

  1807. role in

  1808. sanctification?

  1809. Look at

  1810. Colossians 1.

  1811. We're going

  1812. to stay in

  1813. Colossians just

  1814. for a minute.

  1815. Colossians 1,

    Colossians 1:9

  1816. verse 9.

  1817. Colossians 1,

    Colossians 1:9

  1818. verse 9.

  1819. What is our

  1820. role in

  1821. sanctification?

  1822. Alright,

  1823. verse 9.

  1824. Paul says,

  1825. And so,

  1826. from the day

  1827. we heard,

  1828. we have not

  1829. ceased to pray

  1830. for you,

  1831. asking that

  1832. you may be

  1833. filled with

  1834. the knowledge

  1835. of His

  1836. will and

  1837. all spiritual

  1838. wisdom and

  1839. understanding.

  1840. And then he

  1841. says this,

  1842. So,

  1843. walk,

  1844. so as to

  1845. walk in

  1846. a manner

  1847. worthy of

  1848. the Lord,

  1849. fully pleasing

  1850. to Him,

  1851. bearing fruit

  1852. in every good

  1853. work,

  1854. and increasing

  1855. in the knowledge

  1856. of God.

  1857. Alright,

  1858. so it kind of

  1859. says there,

1860. if you look at it,

  1861. it's like,

  1862. yeah,

  1863. walk this way,

  1864. do this,

  1865. bear fruit

  1866. in every good

  1867. work,

  1868. increasing the

  1869. knowledge of

  1870. God.

  1871. It's kind of

  1872. like telling

  1873. you to do

  1874. something here.

  1875. So,

  1876. we want to

  1877. please God,

  1878. right,

  1879. and with our

  1880. attitudes,

  1881. and bearing

  1882. fruit is kind

  1883. of the example

  1884. of that.

  1885. So,

  1886. this fruit

  1887. that we have

  1888. in our

  1889. Christian life

  1890. is evidence

  1891. of God's

  1892. work in us,

  1893. right?

  1894. It's the outflow

  1895. of what God

  1896. has done in us.

  1897. And so,

  1898. if you want to

  1899. take a statement

  1900. here,

  1901. if you want to

  1902. just ask the

  1903. question,

  1904. what is our

  1905. role?

  1906. We are called

  1907. to be faithful,

  1908. obedient,

  1909. to labor,

  1910. and to toil

  1911. in the work

  1912. of being holy.

  1913. In growing

  1914. in holiness,

  1915. we do play

  1916. a role.

  1917. We are like

  1918. to strive

  1919. for this,

  1920. you know,

  1921. and just

  1922. even practically

  1923. speaking,

  1924. you know,

  1925. what does that

  1926. look like?

  1927. It means like

  1928. taking advantage

  1929. of every means

  1930. of grace

  1931. that God

  1932. has given us.

  1933. You being

  1934. here tonight

  1935. is a means

  1936. of grace

  1937. because you're

  1938. hearing the

  1939. word of God,

  1940. you're reading

  1941. the word of

  1942. God,

  1943. being around

  1944. the people

  1945. of God,

  1946. the church,

  1947. the body

  1948. of Christ,

  1949. that's a huge

  1950. means of grace.

  1951. Something that

  1952. probably 60-70%

  1953. of college students

  1954. neglect because

  1955. they're content

  1956. to just be on

  1957. campus,

  1958. you know,

  1959. but the body

  1960. of Christ

  1961. will help you

  1962. grow in holiness.

  1963. You need to be

  1964. around older

  1965. individuals that

  1966. have gone before

  1967. you and have

  1968. lived, you know,

  1969. different lives

  1970. and they can

  1971. teach you and

  1972. disciple you.

  1973. and ultimately

  1974. prayer, like

  1975. sitting, talking

  1976. to God,

  1977. pouring out your

  1978. heart to Him,

  1979. listening to what

  1980. His heart is,

  1981. and meditating,

  1982. reading, and

  1983. practicing the

  1984. word of God.

  1985. Those are all

  1986. means that He's

  1987. given us.

  1988. Those are the

  1989. primary means,

  1990. right?

  1991. So, that's it.

  1992. We're to be

  1993. faithful, obedient,

  1994. to labor,

  1995. to toil.

  1996. It's not the

  1997. whole let go

  1998. and let God.

  1999. It's kind of

  2000. like a,

  2001. applying it to

  2002. growing in holiness

  2003. is kind of like

  2004. not true.

  2005. In some situations

  2006. when you're trying

  2007. to control everything,

  2008. maybe it is,

  2009. but we are to

  2010. be active,

  2011. proactive in this,

  2012. being obedient

  2013. children.

  2014. All right,

  2015. which brings us

  2016. to the next

  2017. question,

  2018. number four.

  2019. What is the

  2020. Spirit's role

  2021. in sanctification?

  2022. All right?

  2023. And you find

  2024. that in the next

  2025. verse,

  2026. verse 11.

  2027. It says,

  2028. May you be

  2029. strengthened with

  2030. all power,

  2031. according to

  2032. his glorious

  2033. might,

  2034. for all endurance

  2035. and patience

  2036. with joy,

  2037. giving thanks

  2038. to the Father

  2039. who has qualified

  2040. you to share

  2041. in the inheritance

  2042. of the saints

  2043. in light.

  2044. Saints mean

  2045. holy,

  2046. holy ones,

  2047. right?

  2048. So those who

  2049. have been set

  2050. apart,

  2051. that same idea

  2052. uses the word

  2053. there.

  2054. So the Holy

  2055. Spirit gives us,

  2056. according to this,

  2057. the divine strength

  2058. we need

  2059. to live holy

  2060. lives.

  2061. He, like,

  2062. gives us that.

  2063. He shapes

  2064. our desires

  2065. and our wills.

  2066. He comforts us.

  2067. He guides us.

  2068. He teaches us.

  2069. Wes taught in the

  2070. Holy Spirit a few

  2071. weeks ago.

  2072. Good, great message.

  2073. You can go back

  2074. and hear it once

  2075. we get that up

  2076. and running again.

  2077. But the Spirit

  2078. empowers us,

  2079. right,

  2080. to live for God.

  2081. He gives us

  2082. the strength we need.

  2083. So,

  2084. the second statement

  2085. here,

  2086. all right,

  2087. so what's the

  2088. Spirit's role?

  2089. As we step out

  2090. in faithfulness

  2091. and obedience,

  2092. as we move,

  2093. right,

  2094. the Holy Spirit

  2095. is faithful

  2096. to empower

  2097. and encourage

  2098. and guide

  2099. and comfort us

  2100. while we're

  2101. growing in holiness.

  2102. All right?

  2103. And so that's

  2104. the great spiritual

  2105. mystery,

  2106. right?

  2107. Some people just

  2108. want to make it

  2109. one or the other.

  2110. It's either all God

  2111. or it's all us,

  2112. but in this case,

  2113. it's both.

  2114. We have a clear

  2115. calling and a clear

2116. part to play in this,

  2117. but ultimately,

  2118. it's God's power

  2119. that's working

  2120. inside of us.

  2121. And since you're

  2122. in Colossians,

  2123. jump to the end

  2124. of the chapter

  2125. to verse 27,

  2126. right?

  2127. And we're going

  2128. to see like how,

  2129. again,

  2130. both of these

  2131. work together.

  2132. Verse 27,

  2133. to them God

  2134. chose to make known

  2135. how great among

  2136. the Gentiles

  2137. are the riches

  2138. of the glory

  2139. of this mystery,

  2140. which is Christ

  2141. in you,

  2142. the hope of glory.

  2143. All right?

  2144. That's the message.

  2145. And here's what

  2146. Paul says.

  2147. Him we proclaim,

  2148. warning everyone,

  2149. teaching everyone

  2150. with all wisdom

  2151. that we may present

  2152. everyone mature

  2153. in Christ.

  2154. For this I toil,

  2155. struggling.

  2156. See that?

  2157. I'm toiling,

  2158. I'm fighting.

  2159. He actually uses

  2160. the word agonize

2161. in lots of his letters.

  2162. He is like toiling,

  2163. fighting,

  2164. struggling.

  2165. Then it says this,

  2166. with all his energy

  2167. that he powerfully

  2168. works within me.

  2169. What?

  2170. You know?

  2171. So like,

  2172. as we step out

  2173. and are active,

  2174. being proactive,

  2175. being obedient,

  2176. God gives us

  2177. the strength we need

  2178. to endure.

  2179. All right?

  2180. So,

2181. kind of wrapping this up.

  2182. We got started

  2183. a little late tonight,

  2184. but I apologize

  2185. for that.

  2186. Number five,

  2187. the last one.

  2188. And this is

  2189. the encouraging part.

  2190. God will finish,

  2191. you might feel like

2192. you're never going to ride,

  2193. but God will finish

2194. what he started in us.

  2195. God will finish

2196. what he started in us.

  2197. Right?

2198. So one of the greatest

2199. heartaches in the Christian life

  2200. is like the slowness

  2201. of our change.

  2202. We like,

  2203. it's so slow.

  2204. Personally,

  2205. I get very discouraged

2206. at how slow I change

  2207. and are black thereof

  2208. of change

2209. in my life at times.

  2210. I get very discouraged.

  2211. I'm not seeing

2212. a lot of spiritual growth

  2213. during certain seasons

  2214. in my life

2215. and I can be very hard

  2216. on myself.

  2217. I really long

  2218. to love God

  2219. with all my heart

  2220. and all my mind.

  2221. Right?

2222. I want to love him

  2223. fiercely.

2224. I want my whole life

2225. to be consumed by him.

  2226. I want that.

  2227. I know that

2228. that's what most of you

  2229. want too.

2230. But then you find yourself

  2231. just slipping back

  2232. into a reoccurring

  2233. state in your life

  2234. and you get discouraged

  2235. and dang it,

2236. you just want to quit.

  2237. I know the feeling

2238. and I know I'm not alone here.

  2239. So,

2240. if you feel like that sometimes,

  2241. be encouraged

  2242. because,

  2243. unlike us,

2244. who start a lot of things

  2245. and don't finish them,

  2246. right,

  2247. God never does that.

  2248. Whatever he starts,

  2249. he always finishes.

  2250. He always brings you

  2251. completion.

  2252. Right?

  2253. So,

  2254. our destiny,

  2255. one day,

2256. is to be one day

  2257. like completely holy,

  2258. sinless,

  2259. perfect before God.

  2260. That's where he's going

  2261. to take us.

2262. I think in three weeks,

  2263. something like that,

  2264. four weeks,

2265. we're going to talk about

  2266. the doctrine of like

  2267. glorification,

  2268. which is basically

  2269. being perfect

2270. and being with the Lord

  2271. in eternity.

  2272. And he's going

  2273. to take us there.

  2274. Philippians 1.6

  2275. says this.

  2276. Most of you

  2277. have heard this verse.

  2278. Philippians 1.6

2279. I am sure of this,

  2280. sure of this,

  2281. that he who began

2282. a good work in you

  2283. will bring it

  2284. to completion

  2285. at the day

  2286. of Jesus Christ.

  2287. He will complete it.

  2288. So,

  2289. true,

  2290. genuine believers,

  2291. right,

  2292. who have experienced

  2293. God's saving power

  2294. and have the confidence

  2295. that one day

  2296. the work that God

  2297. started right now

2298. is going to be completed.

2299. It's going to be finished.

  2300. He will complete it.

  2301. Another man

  2302. discouraged about

2303. the slowness of his change,

2304. kind of like I can be,

2305. and maybe like most of you,

  2306. hopefully,

2307. that you grieve over your sin,

2308. the sin of your life,

  2309. was John Newton,

  2310. former slave trader

  2311. and brigand

  2312. and drunk

  2313. and brawler

  2314. who became a believer

2315. and completely had a life change,

  2316. completely was devoted to

  2317. to Christ

  2318. and actually helped

2319. bring down the slave trade

  2320. in the British Empire

  2321. years later.

  2322. But he said

  2323. in that hymn,

  2324. Amazing Grace,

2325. it was grace that taught

  2326. my heart to fear

2327. and grace my fears relieved.

  2328. How precious did

  2329. that grace appear

2330. the hour I first believed.

  2331. Right?

  2332. And what he says

  2333. right here,

  2334. a very cool statement.

  2335. He says,

2336. I am not what I ought to be.

2337. I am not what I want to be.

  2338. I am not what I hope

2339. to be in another world.

  2340. But still,

2341. I am not what I used to be.

2342. And by the grace of God,

  2343. I am what I am.

  2344. Pick that up like,

2345. I'm not where I want to be.

  2346. The one encouraging thought

2347. is I'm not who I used to be.

  2348. Right?

  2349. And by God's grace,

  2350. I am what I am.

  2351. Very powerful.

  2352. So,

2353. we'll close with this text.

  2354. Let's look at

  2355. 1 Thessalonians 5.

2356. Just to kind of wrap this up.

  2357. 1 Thessalonians 5.

  2358. Just showing you

  2359. another verse here.

  2360. Verse 23.

2361. And this is kind of a prayer

  2362. of Paul.

2363. And he would pray it

  2364. for us too.

  2365. He says this.

  2366. Verse 23.

  2367. Now may the God

  2368. of peace Himself

  2369. sanctify you completely

2370. and may your whole spirit

  2371. and soul and body

  2372. be kept blameless

  2373. at the coming

2374. of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  2375. Right?

  2376. He who calls you

  2377. is faithful

2378. and surely He will do it.

  2379. See that?

2380. He's going to do it.

2381. He's going to bring us

  2382. to completion.

  2383. Holy and blameless.

2384. And it's going to be

  2385. God's power.

  2386. He will do it.

  2387. So let's pray together.

  2388. Let's pray together.
