  1. So we've been moving through, we've been seeing the beginning of Jesus' ministry.

  2. He comes out, he's in Galilee, he's been baptized, he begins establishing his authority as he's tempted

  3. ! and establishes his authority over Satan, as he drives out demons, as he heals paralytics and cleanses lepers.

  4. We saw in the beginning of chapter 2 that he has returned to Capernaum. For a while he was out in desolate places because of the healing of the leper.

  5. He's returned back to Capernaum and now here at the beginning of our story we see him again back out beside the sea.

  6. Now Capernaum is located close to the sea. It's a port town and the Sea of Galilee is on the northwest.

  7. Capernaum would have been on the northwest side of the Sea of Galilee.

  8. And so that's where he is back out by the sea and there's again a massive crowd that's following him.

  9. We've said repeatedly that this crowd was not necessarily following him from genuine faith.

  10. In fact, more than likely not.

  11. We see a very, very few faithful followers of Christ after his crucifixion.

  12. As they're waiting for his resurrection, the number we count in the beginning of Acts is 120.

  13. And here we see thousands and thousands of people following him.

  14. More than likely because of the miracles.

  15. Because he was doing something fantastic and they wanted to see it.

  16. Or they themselves had some infirmity that they wanted healed.

  17. So again we see a crowd following him.

  18. And I'll just point out to you once again his ministry.

  19. The ministry that God gave him of teaching.

  20. So he's teaching them we see at the beginning of verse 13.

  21. Verse 13.

  22. Remember the very thrust of Jesus' teaching.

  23. Even as we get further into the Gospel of Mark and we begin to study the parables and all these different facets of what he's teaching.

  24. Remember the primary thing that he's teaching is the coming of the Kingdom of God.

  25. Right?

  26. Back in chapter 1, verse 15.

  27. He says that he came out of Galilee, into Galilee, proclaiming the Gospel of God and saying,

  28. The time is fulfilled and the Kingdom of God is at hand.

  29. Repent and believe in the Gospel.

  30. So we can, with surety, say that in some way he was teaching this very same thing.

  31. As we see him here walking alongside the seashore and teaching this crowd.

  32. And in verse 14 we see that he passes by a man named Levi.

  33. Levi.

  34. Now it's interesting, the record here is that he's Levi, the son of Alphaeus.

  35. We know that the Apostle James was also the son of Alphaeus.

  36. So would this be then James' brother Levi?

  37. And who is this Levi?

  38. He's not listed in the account of the Apostles in other places in the Gospels.

  39. And there's a bit of debate about this, but most people agree that this Levi is the Apostle we know as Matthew.

  40. Now I won't get into the argument.

  41. I thought about it.

  42. It's not worth the time.

  43. Because most people agree that this is in fact Matthew.

  44. One author said that much ink has been spilled over determining if this is in fact Matthew.

  45. I like the way J.C. Ryle put this.

  46. He's a well-respected 19th century evangelical Anglican bishop and commentator.

  47. He said,

  48. The person who is called Levi at the beginning of this passage is the same person who is called Matthew in the first of the four Gospels.

  49. Let us not forget this.

  50. It is no less an apostle and an evangelist whose early history is now before our eyes.

  51. So I think with fair certainty, we can't say definitively, but with fair certainty we can say that this is Matthew.

  52. In this day, most people had some form of nickname, often a Hebrew name and a Gentile name, which would have been sort of a nickname for them.

  53. For example, Simon Peter.

  54. Jesus gave him the name Peter.

  55. His name was Simon and he was sometimes called Cephas.

  56. If you recall, he was mocked a bit by Paul using that name.

  57. His Greek slang name being Cephas.

  58. And so the probability here is that this is in fact one of his other names of the apostle that we know as Matthew.

  59. Matthew.

  60. So let's assume that together.

  61. That's what we're looking at.

  62. And he was a tax collector.

  63. We see that he was sitting at the tax booth.

  64. And some of your translations may say toll booth by the seashore.

  65. So he was likely collecting admission for passengers headed to Capernaum.

  66. So who were landing on the seashore, had sailed across the Sea of Galilee and headed into Capernaum.

  67. He was charging them a toll.

  68. And he would have been doing this as an agent of the Roman Empire.

  69. Collecting money for Rome.

  70. For their governance.

  71. For their war effort.

  72. You know Rome marched themselves across the known world conquering people.

  73. And that's what these dollars were going to.

  74. These men were crooked in nature.

  75. The tax collectors.

  76. The toll collectors were.

  77. Because the way they were paid is they were allowed to exact a charge above and beyond the actual toll charge.

  78. Rome didn't care as long as they got the cut that they had required of that particular trade route or port.

  79. They could collect above and beyond that.

  80. And so these men lined their pockets by charging more than was necessary.

  81. That was the arrangement that they had.

  82. Furthermore, having been working for Rome, he would have been absolutely despised by most Jews.

  83. Remember, Rome was ruling over them.

  84. So he was a traitor in their sight.

  85. The tax collectors, you see them commonly named amongst sinners throughout the New Testament.

  86. Because they were very, very disliked.

  87. Notice here that as he's traveling along, it says,

  88. And as he passed by, he, being Jesus, saw Levi sitting at this booth.

  89. It doesn't say that Levi was following him.

  90. It does not say that Levi sought him out.

  91. But here we see our great Lord seeking out Levi.

  92. Luke 19, 10.

  93. Jesus says of his ministry that what he came to do was to seek and to save the lost.

  94. Jesus seeks out and finds his lost sheep.

  95. And the sheep follows him.

  96. John 10, verse 27 says,

    John 10:27

  97. My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.

  98. So we have to pause at this and look at the efficacious call of our Lord.

  99. The Lord calls and Levi responds.

  100. He simply says to him,

  101. Follow me.

  102. He works in him the ability to do so.

  103. And Levi gets up and follows.

  104. And I love Mark's punctuality at this point.

  105. We've talked a bit about how he's so brief.

  106. And he runs us through stories so quickly.

  107. And in this case, I absolutely love.

  108. Jesus says, follow me.

  109. And the record is, and he rose and followed him.

  110. He left behind his profession that he was doing quite well at.

  111. Any of these men would have been incredibly wealthy doing this service for Rome.

  112. And he stands up and he walks away from it.

  113. Remember who this person is.

  114. This Matthew leaves everything to follow Jesus.

  115. Some 60 years or so later, writes the Gospel of Matthew.

  116. Follows Jesus to the grave.

  117. Experiences all of this.

  118. Writes the Gospel of Matthew.

  119. And is later, we think, martyred in Ethiopia.

  120. That's the prevalent rumor that he was martyred in Ethiopia.

  121. He leaves behind fame, success, fortune, and follows Christ.

  122. And this is a great work of grace in his life.

  123. You don't see a record here of him debating this.

  124. He doesn't go, this man seems pretty amazing.

  125. Healing people.

  126. And I'm kind of liking his teaching.

  127. I'm going to follow him around a little while and get a feel for what he's got going on.

  128. I'm going to have a chat with him and see what he may promise me if I follow him.

  129. If this is the Christ, the one who's come to reign, I want a prominent place in the kingdom.

  130. Let me go see if I can get on board with what he's doing.

  131. He had, by the world's measure, everything he could want.

  132. And Jesus walks by and says to him, follow me.

  133. And his heart is turned.

  134. And he does just that.

  135. What a precious view of the sovereign work of grace in a person's life.

  136. And so it would seem, we find in verse 15, that we see the record that Jesus is now reclining in his house.

  137. At table, it says.

  138. And so it's likely that as he followed him, he said, please come to my place.

  139. I have a house.

  140. And we can fill it with people.

  141. We see that many tax collectors and sinners were reclining with Jesus and his disciples.

  142. For there were many who followed him.

  143. And again here we see some debate.

  144. It could be that these tax collectors and sinners were those who followed Jesus.

  145. Or they were ones who followed Levi.

  146. Levi.

  147. Right?

  148. That he was already working as an evangelist.

  149. Right?

  150. We don't know exactly who this pronoun applies to.

  151. But all the same, we see them have a feast together at this table.

  152. And the record is that we find him at home with Levi reclining at table.

  153. Now, just to explain to you a little bit, tables of this day, they would have been low tables.

  154. People would have sat on three sides of them.

  155. One side was left open conveniently for serving at the table.

  156. Servants would bring food to the table and you didn't have to reach over somebody's shoulder.

  157. It would be kind of nice this day, wouldn't it, if we had the opening at the end?

  158. Maybe like our booths, our modern day booths.

  159. People can serve food in that way.

  160. And they reclined on couches that were at about a ten degree angle.

  161. And they actually sloped in towards the table.

  162. And they laid with their heads towards the table.

  163. And it was proper for them to prop themselves up on their left arm so they could use their right hand to eat.

  164. This seems like a miserable way to eat to me.

  165. This sounds so uncomfortable.

  166. I can't tell you the last time I laid on my stomach.

  167. No, thank you.

  168. Right?

  169. But this is the way they spent time together.

  170. They reclined together in this way.

  171. And the significant thing about the fact that he's in this place,

  172. this was the normal way that they ate food,

  173. but the fact that he was doing this was an intimate thing.

  174. You reclined at table with people that you had relationships with.

  175. And this is where we find our Lord.

  176. The one, Jesus Christ.

  177. The one who is without sin.

  178. Who does he choose to spend his time with?

  179. He spends his time with tax collectors and sinners.

  180. That he might advance the gospel.

  181. The one who is without sin.

  182. The one who is without sin.

  183. The one who is without sin.

  184. The one who is without sin.

  185. The one who is without sin.

  186. Now there's a sort of common phrase.

  187. I actually hope some of your minds were drawn to it immediately as I made that point about Christ.

  188. And people pull this phrase from John chapter 17 and they say,

    John 17 chapter mention

  189. we're called to be in the world, but not of the world.

  190. Are you familiar with that?

  191. We're called to be in the world, but not of the world.

  192. And admittedly, this is something I have used as well.

  193. And I think the person who probably coined this, the language is incredibly close to what's happening in John chapter 17.

    John 17 chapter mention

  194. The high priestly prayer did so with the best of intention and probably meant the right thing as they coined it.

  195. However, I think most people fall off one of two sides when they think in these terms.

  196. As living in this world as a redeemed person, they think I'm supposed to be in the world, but not of the world.

  197. And they either take it too far into licentious living, right?

  198. I'm supposed to be in the world, but not of the world.

  199. That's the way they tend to treat that, right?

  200. I'm supposed to hang out with sinners and in the act of doing so,

  201. they are continually worked into a more intimate relationship with these people who influence them and they themselves then sin.

  202. It's the end result of this action together.

  203. And then there are others who say, yeah, we're supposed to be in the world, but not of the world.

  204. We're not supposed to be of the world.

  205. And they therefore cut themselves off altogether from those who don't know Christ, right?

  206. They create these small little cultural subgroups.

  207. I actually think this is the side that we err to more often as evangelical believers.

  208. And we quit associating altogether with the world.

  209. And so there's a tightrope as there is with so many things here to be walked.

  210. How is it that we are meant to follow Christ into his ministry,

  211. the way in which he ministered to those around him,

  212. as those who have been called to carry out his mission in this world?

  213. Look at John chapter 17.

    John 17 chapter mention

  214. I should have go there with me.

  215. We've got a couple of verses to look at, so it would be of benefit to us all to be there together.

  216. I want to revise this common phrase this morning.

  217. Whether or not you actually say it differently, that's okay.

  218. But that you think of it rightly is my hope in making a revision to it.

  219. John chapter 17, beginning in verse 14.

    John 17 chapter mention

  220. This is the high priestly prayer.

  221. This is the prayer that Jesus prays on the behalf of his apostles

  222. and the disciples that would follow preceding his crucifixion.

  223. This is Jesus praying to God,

  224. I have given them your word,

  225. and the world has hated them because they are not of the world,

  226. just as I am not of the world.

  227. There's the language.

  228. Not of the world.

  229. Verse 15.

  230. I do not ask that you take them out of the world.

  231. There's the in the world part.

  232. But that you keep them from the evil one.

  233. They are not of the world,

  234. just as I am not of the world.

  235. Sanctify them in the truth.

  236. Your word is truth.

  237. As you sent me into the world,

  238. so have I sent them into the world.

  239. And for their sake,

  240. I consecrate myself,

  241. that they also may be sanctified in truth.

  242. So we see him very clearly say,

  243. they are not of the world,

  244. just as I am not of the world.

  245. But recognize that in this prayer,

  246. this is not the destination.

  247. He's not saying to God,

  248. make them not of the world.

  249. And now let's talk about the means by which that happens.

  250. The primary point of him saying this

  251. is to say,

  252. they're not of the world,

  253. therefore,

  254. they're being sent into the world.

  255. Right?

  256. You see that?

  257. Verse 17.

  258. Sanctify the truth and the word of the earth.

  259. As you sent me into the world,

  260. so have I sent them into the world.

  261. Right?

  262. Luke chapter 19, verse 10.

    Luke 19:10

  263. For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.

  264. So this is the very reason

  265. for which we are left in the world.

  266. As those not of it,

  267. we are sent into it.

  268. And then his prayer for them

  269. is that we will be spared

  270. from the sin that we'll be exposed to.

  271. That we'll be sanctified

  272. or perfected in the truth.

  273. Right?

  274. That we will remain

  275. not of the world

  276. as we're in the world.

  277. So let me suggest to you

  278. that we change the phrase

  279. in the world but not of the world

  280. to not of the world

  281. but sent into the world.

  282. Right?

  283. This is the calling

  284. of our lives.

  285. So,

  286. we've been set free

  287. from the passions of the world.

  288. The slavery of sin

  289. that controls sinful man.

  290. And we've been given freedom

  291. in order to serve the world

  292. to the glory of God.

  293. Right?

  294. Look at what Jesus did

  295. with his time.

  296. Right?

  297. He's confronting here

  298. in chapter 2

  299. in a number of ways

  300. the religious culture.

  301. And that's what we're going to get to here

  302. in just a moment.

  303. The scribes of the Pharisees

  304. are all kinds of offended

  305. by this.

  306. Right?

  307. This Jesus in their minds,

  308. if he was the teacher

  309. he said he was,

  310. if he was in fact

  311. the Son of God,

  312. should have spent

  313. all of his time with them.

  314. Right?

  315. That's where he should have dwelt.

  316. Sitting around

  317. having high-minded conversation

  318. with the scribes

  319. of the Pharisees,

  320. the great theologians

  321. of the day.

  322. But he instead

  323. finds himself

  324. reclining at table

  325. with tax collectors

  326. and with sinners.

  327. Now this has all kinds

  328. of implications

  329. in our life.

  330. And in the time we have,

  331. I couldn't even possibly

  332. work it out.

  333. And I don't even know

  334. that I've completely

  335. worked it out

  336. in my day-to-day.

  337. What does it look like

  338. to spend time

  339. with sinners

  340. in this way?

  341. But we have to

  342. engage this world

  343. with the gospel of Christ.

  344. There's no debate

  345. in that part.

  346. Right?

  347. We're not supposed

  348. to get in huddles

  349. and avoid the world

  350. altogether.

  351. Right?

  352. We're victorious

  353. because what of Christ

  354. has done for us.

  355. We're sent

  356. into the world.

  357. The gates of hell

  358. will not stand

  359. against the advance

  360. of the kingdom

  361. of God.

  362. That is what we are

  363. called to do.

  364. To go in

  365. and to take over

  366. for the glory of God.

  367. And so many believers

  368. have their little rites

  369. and their rituals

  370. and their schedule

  371. and they include

  372. the lost world

  373. all together

  374. in the things of God.

  375. This is not

  376. our calling, beloved.

  377. Galatians 5.13

  378. says,

  379. For you are called

  380. to freedom, brothers.

  381. Given freedom.

  382. Only do not use

  383. your freedom

  384. as an opportunity

  385. for the flesh

  386. but through love

  387. serve one another.

  388. Paul is saying

  389. to us here

  390. that our freedom

  391. is meant to be used

  392. to serve the world.

  393. Right?

  394. Not to live

  395. in licentiousness.

  396. Right?

  397. Not to run off

  398. hanging out

  399. with all of our pals

  400. and living however we might

  401. because of grace

  402. but in order

  403. to serve the world.

  404. Again,

  405. a warning

  406. just as you're thinking about

  407. how do I engage

  408. a culture?

  409. How do I get involved?

  410. How do I recline

  411. at table

  412. with those

  413. who are sinners?

  414. 1 Peter 2.11-12

  415. Peter says,

  416. Beloved,

  417. I urge you

  418. as soldiers of exiles

  419. to abstain

  420. from the passions

  421. of the flesh

  422. which wage war

  423. against your soul.

  424. Which wage war

  425. against your soul.

  426. Keep your conduct

  427. among the Gentiles

  428. honorable

  429. so that when they

  430. speak against you

  431. as evildoers

  432. they may see

  433. your good deeds

  434. and glorify God

  435. on the day of visitation.

  436. So there you see

  437. that tightrope line

  438. of walking

  439. that we keep

  440. our conduct

  441. honorable

  442. but that these people

  443. do in fact

  444. see our good deeds.

  445. That they actually

  446. know who we are.

  447. They can observe

  448. the work of God

  449. in our lives.

  450. And I hope this morning

  451. that we'll take a cue

  452. from Christ

  453. here as we see him

  454. reclining at table

  455. with the tax collectors

  456. and the sinners.

  457. Verse 16

  458. we see the scribes

  459. of the Pharisees.

  460. Some of your translations

  461. may say scribes

  462. and Pharisees.

  463. You can insert

  464. at this point

  465. we talked a bit

  466. about who these

  467. people were

  468. specifically

  469. last week

  470. but just insert

  471. at this point

  472. these were the

  473. this was the

  474. legalistic

  475. religious culture.

  476. These men

  477. were certainly

  478. apostate

  479. but they didn't

  480. think that they were.

  481. They thought

  482. that they kept

  483. God's law

  484. to a T.

  485. But they had

  486. failed to

  487. understand the

  488. point of God's law.

  489. So they were

  490. self-righteous

  491. they were built up

  492. they were holy

  493. in their own minds

  494. and they asked

  495. this question

  496. to the disciples

  497. why does he eat

  498. with tax collectors

  499. and sinners?

  500. Now you remember

  501. the reason

  502. that Jesus

  503. was crucified

  504. was the charge

  505. of blasphemy.

  506. Because Jesus

  507. had said

  508. that he himself

  509. was God.

  510. And certainly

  511. that would be

  512. blasphemy

  513. if he wasn't.

  514. If he wasn't God

  515. that would be

  516. the case.

  517. And so the

  518. constant effort

  519. of the scribes

  520. the Pharisees

  521. the Sadducees

  522. was to prove

  523. him to not

  524. be God.

  525. Because then they

  526. had him

  527. on the charge

  528. of blasphemy.

  529. He said it

  530. and he said it

  531. again and again

  532. and again

  533. that he was

  534. the son of God.

  535. And so they

  536. continued to do this

  537. and they did so

  538. by accusing him

  539. of things

  540. that they

  541. thought were

  542. wrong.

  543. By their own

  544. set of rules

  545. that they

  546. thought God

  547. had commanded.

  548. And so here

  549. we see this

  550. this charge

  551. being railed

  552. against him

  553. that he would

  554. stoop so low

  555. to associate

  556. with these

  557. unclean men.

  558. They had clearly

  559. categorized themselves.

  560. They were so

  561. much better

  562. as keepers

  563. of the law

  564. versus those

  565. that collect

  566. taxes and sin.

  567. And sinners

  568. is just a general.

  569. There are tax collectors

  570. and a bunch

  571. of other

  572. sinners

  573. is all that's

  574. being said

  575. in this case.

  576. And so this is

  577. their attempt

  578. to continue

  579. to build

  580. evidence

  581. against him.

  582. Why is it

  583. that he is

  584. not the son

  585. of God?

  586. Because look

  587. at the sin

  588. he lives in

  589. and Jesus

  590. in all of his

  591. wonderful

  592. profundity

  593. hears what

  594. they say

  595. and responds,

  596. those who are

  597. well have no

  598. need of a physician

  599. but those

  600. who are sick.

  601. I came

  602. not to call

  603. the righteous

  604. but sinners.

  605. And I love

  606. that he doesn't

  607. actually address

  608. the charge.

  609. He doesn't

  610. even give them

  611. the time

  612. of day

  613. but says to them

  614. this is why

  615. I came

  616. to come

  617. into this world

  618. to save

  619. sinners.

  620. Now you see

  621. these two groups

  622. we see those

  623. who are well

  624. and the righteous

  625. we can think

  626. of those

  627. as one.

  628. He says

  629. basically the same

  630. sentence twice

  631. to give us

  632. more explanation

  633. of what he

  634. means by this.

  635. Those who are

  636. well have no

  637. need of a

  638. physician but

  639. those who

  640. are sick.

  641. So these would

  642. have been

  643. people who

  644. would have

  645. been well

  646. in their

  647. own minds.

  648. Jesus here

  649. introduces himself

  650. as the great

  651. physician.

  652. Certainly he's

  653. healed people

  654. who are sick.

  655. He could take

  656. that title

  657. for this reason

  658. but here he's

  659. speaking specifically

  660. of being a

  661. spiritual healer

  662. of making

  663. people's

  664. souls

  665. right.

  666. So just

  667. think about

  668. our day

  669. of modern

  670. medicine.

  671. I'm sure

  672. you're thinking

  673. more about

  674. that these

  675. days than

  676. maybe other

  677. days you

  678. might.

  679. But how

  680. many people

  681. act and

  682. think as if

  683. they're well

  684. and they're

  685. not?

  686. Because the

  687. reality of it

  688. is that none

  689. of us really

  690. are well.

  691. We may not

  692. be in the

  693. hospital or

  694. necessarily need

  695. a doctor at

  696. that time

  697. but you're

  698. all falling

  699. apart.

  700. The degradation

  701. is happening.

  702. Maybe the

  703. little guys

  704. are still

  705. getting bigger

  706. and growing

  707. up but

  708. those of you

  709. who understand

  710. what I'm

  711. saying right

  712. now, you

  713. are falling

  714. apart.

  715. We're all

  716. in some

  717. way sick.

  718. How many

  719. of you have

  720. a very

  721. stubborn

  722. relative,

  723. maybe a

  724. dad or a

  725. grandpa,

  726. that will be

  727. so sick

  728. and will

  729. just refuse

  730. to believe

  731. that they're

  732. sick?

  733. That person,

  734. that's somebody

  735. who's like,

  736. it sounds like

  737. they're going

  738. to turn

  739. inside out,

  740. they're coughing

  741. so hard and

  742. you say,

  743. why when you

  744. not go to the

  745. doctor and say,

  746. I'm not sick,

  747. this is just a

  748. little cough.

  749. Do you know

  750. those people?

  751. I do.

  752. These are the

  753. type of men

  754. who certainly

  755. were soul

  756. sick,

  757. certainly were

  758. sinners,

  759. but not in

  760. their own

  761. mind.

  762. You see them

  763. constantly comparing

  764. themselves.

  765. They knew

  766. that they were

  767. flawed,

  768. they knew

  769. that they

  770. weren't keeping

  771. the law

  772. perfectly,

  773. but they

  774. were constantly

  775. comparing

  776. themselves,

  777. high-minded,

  778. setting themselves

  779. apart from

  780. everyone else.

  781. We're not

  782. like them.

  783. There's some

  784. 6,000 Pharisees

  785. at this time,

  786. and they were

  787. so much

  788. better in

  789. their own

  790. minds that

  791. they had

  792. earned this

  793. type of

  794. righteousness.

  795. It's a

  796. self-given

  797. righteousness,

  798. an outward

  799. righteousness that

  800. they appeared

  801. to be doing

  802. quite well.

  803. We can be

  804. that way

  805. sometimes.

  806. They trusted

  807. in themselves

  808. for righteousness.

  809. righteousness.

  810. In Matthew

    Matthew 23:27

  811. chapter 23,

  812. verse 27

  813. and verse 28,

  814. Jesus hands

  815. out quite the

  816. indictment to

  817. the scribes

  818. and the

  819. Pharisees.

  820. He says,

  821. Woe to

  822. you,

  823. scribes

  824. and Pharisees,

  825. hypocrites,

  826. for you are

  827. like whitewashed

  828. tombs,

  829. which outwardly

  830. appear beautiful,

  831. but within are

  832. full of dead

  833. people's bones

  834. and all

  835. uncleanness.

  836. So you also

  837. outwardly appear

  838. righteous to

  839. others,

  840. but within you

  841. are full of

  842. hypocrisy and

  843. lawlessness.

  844. righteousness.

  845. Woe to

  846. you if you

  847. think that

  848. you can look

  849. to yourself

  850. for righteousness.

  851. If you think

  852. that you have

  853. any good

  854. in and of

  855. yourself,

  856. right?

  857. You are like

  858. these Pharisees

  859. and hypocrites.

  860. You are a

  861. whitewashed

  862. tomb,

  863. right?

  864. You've made

  865. yourself up

  866. all neat

  867. and pretty

  868. on the outside,

  869. but inside

  870. you're full

  871. of death.

  872. That's what

  873. Jesus is saying

  874. here.

  875. And these are

  876. the men that

  877. deliver this

  878. accusation.

  879. How could

  880. he possibly

  881. eat with

  882. these men,

  883. these sinners,

  884. these unclean

  885. ones?

  886. So we must

  887. recognize our

  888. sin,

  889. our sickness

  890. to see our

  891. need of a

  892. physician.

  893. I think a lot

  894. of you know

  895. that on Tuesday

  896. I threw my

  897. back out of

  898. place.

  899. My lower

  900. back is one

  901. of the most

  902. miserable

  903. experiences of

  904. my life.

  905. I'm still,

  906. I'm rocking a lot

  907. today because

  908. I'm still a little

  909. uncomfortable as

  910. a result of it.

  911. I stayed

  912. bent in half

  913. for about 20

  914. minutes before

  915. I could even

  916. straighten.

  917. Spent just a

  918. couple of days

  919. laying on a

  920. heating pad.

  921. There was

  922. absolutely no

  923. avoiding the

  924. fact that I

  925. was in pain.

  926. I couldn't go,

  927. I'm alright,

  928. things are good.

  929. I wanted to

  930. throw up.

  931. I cried once.

  932. I sneezed,

  933. I sneezed,

  934. and it made me

  935. cry because it

  936. hurt so bad.

  937. There was no

  938. doubt of this,

  939. and so the

  940. very day I did

  941. it, I went to

  942. the chiropractor.

  943. There was no

  944. question in my

  945. mind.

  946. Like Sam

  947. suggested it,

  948. I didn't go,

  949. well, I don't

  950. know, let's

  951. wait and see

  952. how this goes

  953. for me.

  954. I went,

  955. okay, alright,

  956. I'll make the

  957. call right now.

  958. I did, and I

  959. went, and it

  960. helped.

  961. It certainly

  962. moved me along.

  963. We must

  964. recognize our

  965. need of the

  966. great physician.

  967. We must

  968. recognize that

  969. we have a

  970. sickness that

  971. we cannot

  972. heal ourselves.

  973. We must be

  974. humble in this

  975. way.

  976. We must

  977. recognize that

  978. we have no

  979. good in us,

  980. nothing at

  981. all.

  982. And this is

  983. the great

  984. sickness of

  985. our soul.

  986. And that if

  987. we're to stand

  988. right before

  989. God one day

  990. in judgment,

  991. if we're to

  992. have any

  993. joy in life

  994. now, that

  995. we need

  996. Christ's

  997. righteousness.

  998. That our

  999. source of

  1000. health must

  1001. come from

  1002. someplace else.

  1003. Remember

  1004. Jesus'

  1005. gospel call

  1006. to repent

  1007. and believe

  1008. in the

  1009. gospel.

  1010. Repentance

  1011. is carried

  1012. along by

  1013. humility.

  1014. A proud

  1015. person never

  1016. asks for

  1017. forgiveness,

  1018. never admits

  1019. they're wrong.

  1020. Right?

  1021. You must be

  1022. humble in

  1023. order to

  1024. repent.

  1025. And this is

  1026. the very

  1027. thing that

  1028. Jesus Christ

  1029. is calling

  1030. us to.

  1031. To recognize

  1032. who we are

  1033. apart from

  1034. him and

  1035. respond in

  1036. faith to

  1037. the grace

  1038. that he

  1039. lavishes on

  1040. sinners.

  1041. Because that

  1042. is who he

  1043. came to

  1044. save.

  1045. We were

  1046. all once

  1047. like Levi.

  1048. You might

  1049. say,

  1050. well, I

  1051. haven't been

  1052. rich.

  1053. You've been

  1054. successful.

  1055. You've had

  1056. what this

  1057. world can

  1058. offer to

  1059. you.

  1060. And you

  1061. were happy

  1062. to have

  1063. it.

  1064. And one

  1065. day Jesus

  1066. came along

  1067. beside you

  1068. and said,

  1069. follow me.

  1070. And by the

  1071. spirit working

  1072. in your life,

  1073. you said,

  1074. yes, sir.

  1075. And you

  1076. got up and

  1077. you followed

  1078. him if you

  1079. were found

  1080. in him.

  1081. And now he

  1082. has sent us

  1083. into the

  1084. world the

  1085. way he

  1086. went into

  1087. the world.

  1088. You know,

  1089. Paul gives

  1090. us a little

  1091. more severe

  1092. example of

  1093. this idea

  1094. of sickness

  1095. and health.

  1096. There's a

  1097. bit of an

  1098. implication here,

  1099. and I'm not

  1100. saying that

  1101. Jesus was

  1102. flawed in

  1103. his presentation

  1104. at all,

  1105. but there's a

  1106. bit of an

  1107. implication that

  1108. if we're

  1109. sick,

  1110. maybe there's

  1111. something we

  1112. can do for

  1113. ourselves.

  1114. Maybe it's

  1115. possible that

  1116. we could do

  1117. this for

  1118. ourselves.

  1119. And I'll

  1120. draw you

  1121. back again

  1122. to my

  1123. back example.

  1124. I was not

  1125. popping my

  1126. own back

  1127. that morning.

  1128. I needed

  1129. a physician.

  1130. Many places

  1131. in the

  1132. scripture that

  1133. we see that

  1134. we're actually

  1135. dead.

  1136. This is the

  1137. example given

  1138. to us.

  1139. This is what

  1140. we see as

  1141. Jesus brings

  1142. out this

  1143. indictment to

  1144. the Pharisees

  1145. that they're

  1146. full of

  1147. dead people's

  1148. bones.

  1149. In Colossians

    Colossians 2:13

  1150. 2,

  1151. verse 13

  1152. and 14,

  1153. Paul writes,

  1154. And you who

  1155. were dead in

  1156. your trespasses

  1157. and the

  1158. uncircumcision

  1159. of your flesh,

  1160. God made

  1161. alive together

  1162. with him,

  1163. having forgiven

  1164. us all our

  1165. trespasses,

  1166. by canceling

  1167. the record of

  1168. debt that stood

  1169. against us

  1170. with its

  1171. legal demands.

  1172. This he set

  1173. aside,

  1174. nailing it,

  1175. to the cross.

  1176. These scribes

  1177. of the Pharisees,

  1178. or the scribes

  1179. and Pharisees,

  1180. stood in this

  1181. very same place,

  1182. dead in their

  1183. trespasses,

  1184. in the

  1185. uncircumcision

  1186. of their

  1187. hearts.

  1188. And they

  1189. desperately needed

  1190. a physician.

  1191. Desperately.

  1192. But they were

  1193. not willing to

  1194. be humble.

  1195. And we get

  1196. to see that

  1197. record all

  1198. throughout the

  1199. Gospels.

  1200. All over the

  1201. place we see

  1202. scribes and

  1203. the Pharisees

  1204. hearing the

  1205. Gospel message

  1206. and rejecting

  1207. it and

  1208. rejecting it

  1209. and rejecting

  1210. it because

  1211. they were

  1212. so proud.

  1213. For those

  1214. of us who

  1215. are in

  1216. Christ,

  1217. we can rejoice

  1218. this morning

  1219. and see that

  1220. the record of

  1221. debt was

  1222. canceled that

  1223. stood against

  1224. us with all

  1225. its legal demands,

  1226. meaning our

  1227. eternal punishment.

  1228. Like what was

  1229. properly would

  1230. have been given

  1231. to us for our

  1232. infinite sin was

  1233. infinite death.

  1234. Right?

  1235. But this was

  1236. set aside and

  1237. nailed to the

  1238. cross and we

  1239. can rejoice

  1240. in that great

  1241. truth.

  1242. And now the

  1243. response to

  1244. that is to

  1245. recognize that

  1246. just as Jesus

  1247. came into the

  1248. world to seek

  1249. and to save

  1250. the lost,

  1251. he has sent

  1252. us into the

  1253. world as

  1254. high priestly

  1255. !

  1256. Prayer,

  1257. and therefore

  1258. we go and

  1259. we share his

  1260. goodness to us

  1261. in Christ.

  1262. I hope you

  1263. find yourself in

  1264. that place this

  1265. morning, that you

  1266. can rejoice

  1267. alongside me,

  1268. that you can

  1269. rejoice new

  1270. alongside me,

  1271. that you're not

  1272. sitting there

  1273. saying, I've

  1274. heard this

  1275. before.

  1276. Yeah, I'm a

  1277. redeemed one,

  1278. good for me.

  1279. This should warm

  1280. your heart,

  1281. to remember who

  1282. you once were,

  1283. Levi, Matthew,

  1284. sitting here

  1285. successful, happy

  1286. as he could be,

  1287. and then his

  1288. world got flipped

  1289. upside down and

  1290. he discovered

  1291. true joy in

  1292. Christ.

  1293. To the point of

  1294. death, he

  1295. discovered true

  1296. joy in Christ.

  1297. You may find

  1298. yourself this

  1299. morning not in

  1300. that place,

  1301. having some doubt

  1302. of that,

  1303. finding that

  1304. maybe you

  1305. have built

  1306. your righteousness

  1307. on the things

  1308. that you do,

  1309. that you come

  1310. to church,

  1311. that you live

  1312. in the south

  1313. and grew up

  1314. in a Christian

  1315. home.

  1316. Most of us

  1317. did.

  1318. That you have

  1319. a Bible and

  1320. you read it

  1321. occasionally.

  1322. That when things

  1323. are going real

  1324. crummy in your

  1325. life, you pray.

  1326. Right before

  1327. finals, lots of

  1328. prayer happens.

  1329. things.

  1330. Right?

  1331. And you hang

  1332. your goodness

  1333. on that.

  1334. Right?

  1335. And not that

  1336. bad.

  1337. Right?

  1338. You hold

  1339. yourself up to

  1340. other people.

  1341. You guys all

  1342. have friends and

  1343. co-workers that

  1344. are way worse

  1345. than you in

  1346. your mind.

  1347. Right?

  1348. Horrible messes.

  1349. And so you're

  1350. doing so much

  1351. better.

  1352. There's not a

  1353. scale that will

  1354. be judged upon.

  1355. Right?

  1356. You don't get up

  1357. there and God

  1358. says, eh, you're

  1359. good enough.

  1360. I'm going to tip

  1361. it that direction.

  1362. Come on in.

  1363. Right?

  1364. You're either in

  1365. Christ or you're

  1366. not.

  1367. Right?

  1368. You're in

  1369. Christ.

  1370. He sees Jesus'

  1371. righteousness.

  1372. Perfect righteousness.

  1373. That's what's

  1374. required of us to

  1375. stand in his

  1376. presence.

  1377. If you're not,

  1378. the little bit,

  1379. little pilfy

  1380. righteousness of

  1381. your own is not

  1382. nearly enough to

  1383. pay the infinite

  1384. debt of your

  1385. sin.

  1386. That's why,

  1387. that is why

  1388. Christ bore the

  1389. wrath for us

  1390. that we might

  1391. trade these two

  1392. things.

  1393. Martin Luther

  1394. called it the

  1395. great exchange.

  1396. He took our

  1397. sin.

  1398. He gave us his

  1399. righteousness.

  1400. This is what

  1401. happened on the

  1402. cross.

  1403. He perfectly

  1404. suffered for the

  1405. sins of the

  1406. church.

  1407. For those that he

  1408. would efficaciously

  1409. call, effectively

  1410. call, is what that

  1411. means.

  1412. Right?

  1413. Our sin has been

  1414. expunged from the

  1415. record.

  1416. It's been cast as

1417. far as the east is

  1418. from the west.

  1419. Let us rejoice in

  1420. that great truth.

1421. And let us be active

  1422. sharing that great

  1423. truth with this

  1424. world.

  1425. We take the Lord's

  1426. Supper together every

  1427. Sunday here.

1428. And we do it as a

  1429. climactic point.

  1430. I hope it's that for

  1431. you.

  1432. We really work at

  1433. leading you up to

  1434. it.

  1435. Right?

  1436. To stop and pause

  1437. and think about this

  1438. work of Christ on

  1439. our behalf.

  1440. His body broken,

  1441. his blood spilled.

  1442. There's symbols

  1443. here.

  1444. We don't believe in

  1445. transubstation.

  1446. We don't believe this

  1447. actually becomes the

  1448. body and the blood

  1449. of Christ.

  1450. Right?

  1451. We don't believe that

1452. this is in some way

  1453. goes into your

  1454. righteousness purse

1455. and you gain a little

1456. bit as a result of

  1457. taking the Lord's

  1458. Supper together.

  1459. Right?

  1460. That's heresy.

  1461. But what we do

  1462. believe is it's a good

  1463. practice.

  1464. It's as a symbolic

  1465. thing for us to

  1466. participate in

  1467. together to

  1468. remember the work

  1469. of Christ on our

  1470. behalf as well as

  1471. the things he's

  1472. promised to do and

  1473. complete finally and

  1474. fully.

1475. And that's why we do

  1476. it together.

1477. It only makes sense to

  1478. take the Lord's

  1479. Supper together

  1480. though from a pure

  1481. place, from a clean

  1482. heart.

  1483. Right?

1484. If you harbor sin in

1485. your heart in light of

  1486. these great truths,

  1487. what business do you

  1488. have celebrating the

  1489. death and the

  1490. resurrection of Christ?

  1491. It makes no sense.

1492. But if you're going to

  1493. actually celebrate what

  1494. he's done on your

  1495. behalf, you ought to

  1496. also ask that the

  1497. Spirit would examine

  1498. your life.

1499. Shed light in the dark

  1500. corners, which we all

  1501. have, that you might

  1502. repent and believe once

  1503. again.

1504. Turn from your sin and

1505. turn to God and take

  1506. the Lord's Supper

  1507. together with us.

1508. So I'm going to pray,

1509. men who are going to

  1510. take the Lord's Supper,

1511. if you'll go ahead and

1512. move to those as I'm

  1513. praying.

1514. As we do before, we'll

1515. have our station set up

  1516. and I just ask as you're

  1517. prepared, come take the

  1518. elements and partake of

  1519. the Lord's Supper.

  1520. Let's pray together.

  1521. together.
