  1. Go ahead and with me take out your copy of God's Word and turn to the Gospel according to Mark chapter 2.

    Mark 2 chapter mention

  2. !

  3. Uncomfortable moments for the Pharisees as Jesus makes great affronts to the religious culture of His day.

  4. We started there at the beginning of chapter 2 as He heals a paralytic and establishes authority to forgive sin which flew in the face of their religious culture.

  5. It was a blasphemy to them and it was indeed if He wasn't in fact God in flesh.

  6. And see that He spent time with sinners.

  7. That He reclined with them.

  8. That He came to heal those who were sick.

  9. Who needed spiritual renewal.

  10. And then we come here to verse 18.

  11. And we speak today about fasting which struck me just before in the service is rather hilarious considering what this week tends to be all about with Thanksgiving and a great gorging of food.

  12. We're going to talk at length today about fasting.

  13. But join me in reading Mark chapter 2 beginning in verse 18.

    Mark 2 chapter mention

  14. Now John's disciples and the Pharisees were fasting.

  15. And people came and said to Him,

  16. Why do John's disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?

  17. And Jesus said to them,

  18. Can the wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them?

  19. And as long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast.

  20. The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them and then they will fast in that day.

  21. No one sews a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment.

  22. If he does, the patch tears away from it.

  23. The new from the old and a worse tear is made.

  24. And no one puts new wine into old wineskins.

  25. If he does, the wine will burst the skins and the wine is destroyed.

  26. And so are the skins.

  27. But new wine is for fresh wineskins.

  28. Join me in praying.

  29. Father God, we thank you for the blessing of the Word and the privilege to come together and to learn from it.

  30. And I pray God, for all of us here, by a great work of your Spirit,

  31. you will plant the truth of your Word deep in our hearts that we might become more like Christ

  32. to the praise of your name and for our good.

  33. Father, we recognize this morning in great humility that we have no good thing in and of ourselves,

  34. but only those things that you have worked and are working in us by your Spirit.

  35. So I pray that he will move and be powerful in us this day.

  36. And we pray this in Christ's name.

  37. Amen.

  38. So, as he's confronting this religious culture,

  39. we have a very specific group of people that were constantly standing in opposition to the ministry of Jesus.

  40. And there was particularly these Pharisees.

  41. We see some broadening groups of people.

  42. We see the Sadducees.

  43. We've got the scribes, which some were Pharisees, some were not.

  44. But there's this particular group of about 6,000 people in this day.

  45. Their founding happened way back in the days of Ezra and Nehemiah.

  46. And it was this particularly pious group of people that practiced an apostate form of Judaism.

  47. And they thought they practiced it very well.

  48. This is exactly what Jesus is saying at the very end of verse 17.

  49. He says,

  50. Those who are well have no need of a physician.

  51. They were righteous in their own minds.

  52. They trusted in themselves.

  53. And it's these people that we see once again fasting,

  54. but in an improper way.

  55. Interestingly, in the beginning of verse 18,

  56. we also see them collectively put in with John's disciples,

  57. referring to John the Baptist.

  58. And just as an aside,

  59. note here that they're still being referred to as John's disciples.

  60. We see in chapter 1 a great multitude,

  61. all Judea is coming out to John to be baptized in the Jordan.

  62. But look here how few of them have followed Christ.

  63. Have had faith worked in their lives that they might follow Him in obedience.

  64. And you still have many who are John's disciples,

  65. even though John was saying,

  66. not me, but Him.

  67. They were missing the point.

  68. And here we find them fasting right along with the Pharisees.

  69. And a question is asked.

  70. And it's a question of accusation.

  71. Not so much an honest question,

  72. as we might propose,

  73. but a question of accusation.

  74. There was constantly a case being built against Jesus

  75. for the claims that He was making.

  76. And here they are, once again,

  77. trying to say,

  78. look at the pious nature of John's disciples and of the Pharisees.

  79. Why are your disciples not this way?

  80. Why is it that you're supporting an unholy living

  81. while these are so holy?

  82. These are righteous and your disciples are not.

  83. How dare you make the claims that you're making?

  84. That is what is loaded into this question here.

  85. You see, the Pharisees,

  86. the religious culture of the day,

  87. recognized that the teaching of Jesus Christ

  88. was completely opposite of their teaching.

  89. It was diametrically opposed.

  90. It was distinct in every way.

  91. And they knew that they had to shut Him down

  92. if they were going to continue

  93. to serve in the way that they served.

  94. This is the case for all world religions today.

  95. Apart from Christianity.

  96. Apart from those who believe that

  97. grace comes by faith in Christ alone.

  98. That is the way of salvation.

  99. All other religions are merely a creating of law.

  100. A work to change the exterior

  101. and the morality of that.

  102. It's Christianity.

  103. It's this message of the Gospel

  104. that seeks to change our hearts.

  105. Change who we actually are.

  106. All world religions recognize

  107. that there's a great symptom,

  108. a great issue with humanity.

  109. This problem of sin.

  110. And yet they treat symptoms.

  111. It reminds me of Western medicine.

  112. Always treating symptoms,

  113. but never treating root cause.

  114. It's Christianity that comes and treats the heart.

  115. And so they had to shut Him down.

  116. If they were going to remain right,

  117. Jesus had to be wrong.

  118. And so they approach Him on this question

  119. of fasting and why it was

  120. that His disciples were not fasting.

  121. Now to really understand

  122. the question they're asking,

  123. we have to understand first fasting.

  124. What it was meant to be

  125. and the way in which they

  126. were practicing it in this day.

  127. And so let's kind of step over

  128. just for a moment

  129. and let's talk a bit about

  130. fasting this morning.

  131. And this is the hilarious part

  132. coming into this week.

  133. First, Matthew 6,

  134. the Sermon on the Mount.

  135. Fasting there is assumed

  136. of Jesus' disciples.

  137. He brings about correction.

  138. He tells them not to be like the hypocrites

  139. who practice fasting in this way,

  140. but to rather practice fasting in this way.

  141. It's an assumption that is made.

  142. And I would ask you then,

  143. as a follower of Christ,

  144. do you, have you ever fasted?

  145. It's an assumption that you will,

  146. in fact, fast.

  147. And as we look a little bit more

  148. about what fasting is meant to be,

  149. I think you'll understand

  150. why it should be the case

  151. that we do fast.

  152. Maybe not the way you've seen it done,

  153. but that we ought to be fasting.

  154. It's an assumption that is made

  155. on our part.

  156. We find a multitude of examples

  157. of fasting in the Scripture.

  158. Very little expressed prescription

  159. for how it ought to take place.

  160. But we see it happening

  161. all over the place.

  162. More places than I could possibly

  163. present to you this morning.

  164. We see it in varying amounts.

  165. Fasting always being

  166. the not eating of food.

  167. It's not,

  168. I'm going to avoid chocolate for a week.

  169. Right?

  170. It's the abstinence from food altogether.

  171. No eating of any food

  172. is what fasting is always referred to

  173. in the Scriptures.

  174. We see one day fasts.

  175. We see three day fasts.

  176. We see seven day fasts.

  177. Fourteen day fasts.

  178. We see forty day fasts.

  179. Right?

  180. Note,

  181. here in our chapter,

  182. Jesus has fasted.

  183. Right?

  184. Mark 1, 12 and 13

  185. states that He was

  186. sent out into the wilderness,

  187. driven out into the wilderness

  188. by the Spirit of God,

  189. when He was there for forty days.

  190. And both the Gospel of Matthew

  191. and Luke add that He was fasting.

  192. He was there for a forty day fast.

  193. And it's important, I think,

  194. that we understand here

  195. why it is that He was fasting.

  196. Right?

  197. Why did Jesus go into the wilderness?

  198. And why was it while He was in the wilderness

  199. He was fasting?

  200. Right?

  201. I believe,

  202. and I think that the scriptural evidence

  203. of why fasting took place

  204. derives at this,

  205. and again,

  206. we're going to step into that

  207. in a moment here,

  208. but that He went as a preparation

  209. for the work that He was about to do.

  210. Right?

  211. He had just begun His ministry.

  212. He had just gone down to the Jordan

  213. and was baptized.

  214. Right?

  215. It was continuing this process

  216. of completed perfection.

  217. He was baptized.

  218. He comes up,

  219. and then immediately,

  220. in verse 12,

  221. chapter 1,

  222. it says,

  223. the Spirit immediately drove Him out

  224. into the wilderness.

  225. He went out to be alone with God.

  226. Right?

  227. To set His face before Him

  228. and to prepare for the work

  229. that He was to do.

  230. He knew full well

  231. what He was sent to accomplish.

  232. What would happen to Him

  233. some three years later

  234. on the cross

  235. and the ministry that was to take place

  236. between this time and that.

  237. I believe that's why

  238. He went out there,

  239. taking the example of Elijah

  240. in 1 Kings chapter 19,

    1 Kings 19 chapter mention

  241. who fasted for 40 days.

  242. He was actually given

  243. a special meal by the angels.

  244. And He fasts for 40 days

  245. on Mount Horeb

  246. where He gets to preach,

  247. I mean speak,

  248. with God Himself.

  249. So I believe that Jesus goes out

  250. to do this very thing.

  251. I've often heard it proposed

  252. that He did this

  253. so that He was very weak in the flesh,

  254. that it actually exalted

  255. the temptations

  256. that were given to Him,

  257. made it more difficult

  258. for Him to stand up.

  259. It was a way in which

  260. He showed forth His perfection

  261. and that He was very weak

  262. and therefore it was harder

  263. for Him to resist

  264. the temptation

  265. that was given to Him.

  266. But I think that

  267. while He was weak in the flesh,

  268. having fasted properly,

  269. He was strong in spirit.

  270. He was actually more prepared.

  271. He had been close with the Father

  272. and was ready to stand

  273. against the temptation of Satan.

  274. So what does it look like?

  275. When fasting is done rightly,

  276. what should it look like?

  277. And this is brief at best,

  278. but firstly, done rightly,

  279. it is a response to God's providence.

  280. It's a response to God's providence,

  281. not a means of obtaining God's favor.

  282. It's not some sort of equation

  283. that we put into play.

  284. If I want God to speak to me clearly,

  285. I am going to fast.

  286. I am going to stop eating food

  287. because that's what happens

  288. when you stop eating food.

  289. God speaks to you.

  290. It's not an equation in that way.

  291. In fact, it should be a response

  292. to God's providence,

  293. the fact that He is, in fact,

  294. in control.

  295. Turn with me to Isaiah chapter 58.

    Isaiah 58 chapter mention

  296. Let's look at an example

  297. of fasting done improperly

  298. and then God's prescription

  299. for what fasting should look like.

  300. This will just give you some clue

  301. as to what I'm trying to say to you here.

  302. Isaiah chapter 58.

    Isaiah 58 chapter mention

  303. God says to Isaiah,

  304. cry aloud, verse 1,

  305. cry aloud, do not hold back,

  306. lift up your voice like a trumpet,

  307. declare to my people

  308. their transgression,

  309. their sin,

  310. to the house of Jacob,

  311. their sins.

  312. Yet they seek me daily

  313. and delight to know my ways

  314. as if they were a nation

  315. that did righteousness

  316. and did not forsake

  317. the judgment of their God.

  318. They ask of me righteous judgments,

  319. they delight to draw near to God.

  320. Now, those of you who hate sarcasm,

  321. this is sarcasm, right,

  322. in the Scriptures, right?

  323. God's being very sarcastic.

  324. Yet they seek me daily

  325. and delight to know my ways

  326. as if they were a nation

  327. that did righteousness

  328. and did not forsake

  329. the judgment of their God.

  330. Verse 3,

  331. the response of the people.

  332. Why have we fasted

  333. and you see it not?

  334. Why have we humbled ourselves

  335. and you take no knowledge of it?

  336. There's their question.

  337. We've been doing this thing.

  338. We've been carrying out

  339. this equation

  340. that we think

  341. we've done this thing.

  342. We should be receiving God's favor

  343. because of our action.

  344. Last part of verse 3.

  345. He gets at the very heart of the issue.

  346. Without spending all the time

  347. of explaining all these things,

  348. what God is saying is

  349. you're doing something

  350. on the exterior,

  351. but yet in the inside

  352. you are still wicked.

  353. You are evil.

  354. Verse 6,

  355. Is not this the fast that I choose?

  356. To loose the bonds of wickedness?

  357. To undo the straps of the yoke?

  358. To let the oppressed go free

  359. and to break every yoke?

  360. Is it not to share your bread

  361. with the hungry

  362. and bring the homeless poor

  363. into your house

  364. when you see the naked

  365. to cover him

  366. and not to hide yourself

  367. from your own flesh?

  368. Then shall your light

  369. break forth like the dawn

  370. and your healing

  371. shall spring up speedily.

  372. Your righteousness

  373. shall go before you.

  374. The glory of the Lord

  375. shall be your rear guard.

  376. Then you shall call

  377. and the Lord will answer.

  378. You shall cry

  379. and He will say,

  380. Here I am.

  381. So it's a response here

  382. of the goodness of God

  383. on their heart.

  384. It's their heart

  385. that matters

  386. in this process.

  387. And so it should be

  388. a response in this way,

  389. not a prescription,

  390. not a means of obtaining

  391. God's favor.

  392. Secondly,

  393. done rightly,

  394. it avoids the praise of men.

  395. Turn to Matthew 6,

  396. which I referenced

  397. just a moment ago.

  398. Again, remembering

  399. that Jesus assumes

  400. that His followers

  401. will in fact fast.

  402. He assumes some other things

  403. as well,

  404. that they'll give to the needy,

  405. that they'll be philanthropic

  406. in that way,

  407. that they will pray.

  408. And He brings some correction here.

  409. We can see in

  410. the final place,

  411. verse 1,

  412. verse 5,

  413. and verse 16.

  414. Beware of practicing

  415. your righteousness

  416. for the people

  417. in order to be seen by them,

  418. for then you will have

  419. no reward from your Father

  420. who is in heaven.

  421. Verse 5,

  422. And when you pray,

  423. you must not be like the hypocrites,

  424. for they love to stand

  425. and pray in the synagogues

  426. and at the street corners,

  427. that they may be seen by others.

  428. Truly I say to you,

  429. they have received

  430. their reward.

  431. Verse 16,

  432. And when you fast,

  433. do not look gloomy

  434. like the hypocrites,

  435. for they disguise their faces

  436. that their fasting

  437. may be seen by others.

  438. In fact,

  439. they put makeup on

  440. to look sadder

  441. than they really were.

  442. Right?

  443. They disguise their faces

  444. that their fasting

  445. may be seen by others.

  446. Truly I say to you,

  447. they have received

  448. their reward.

  449. So done rightly,

  450. it avoids,

  451. it tries to get around

  452. the praise of men.

  453. It's intention is not

  454. to show people

  455. how holy and how pious

  456. and how set aside you are.

  457. Right?

  458. It avoids this very thing.

  459. Right?

  460. That you might have

  461. a reward in heaven.

  462. This is the instruction

  463. given to us

  464. by our Lord

  465. on fasting.

  466. Done rightly,

  467. it avoids the praise

  468. of men.

  469. Thirdly,

  470. done rightly,

  471. it is the sorrowful,

  472. prayerful rejection of food.

  473. It is the sorrowful,

  474. prayerful rejection of food.

  475. It's characterized by

  476. a hunger for God

  477. that drives out

  478. a hunger for food.

  479. A desire to see Him

  480. move and work

  481. both in your life

  482. and in the lives of the people

  483. and in the world.

  484. That it drives out

  485. the desire for food.

  486. I say to you

  487. that this is often

  488. a voluntary

  489. type of fasting.

  490. Not something

  491. that I prescribe to you.

  492. We as a church

  493. are going to go through

  494. a time of fasting.

  495. Right?

  496. But it's something you do

  497. out of a compulsion.

  498. Out of a sorrow

  499. for your sin

  500. and the sins of others.

  501. Out of a desire

  502. to see God

  503. repair such things.

  504. To bring reconciliation

  505. to such situations.

  506. Almost every Sunday

  507. I get up very early

  508. to prepare for Sunday morning.

  509. Sometimes that's because

  510. I'm just really not prepared

  511. for Sunday morning.

  512. I just don't feel like

  513. my notes are together.

  514. They're a scramble.

  515. They're just a big mess.

  516. I've got to get them

  517. in the right order

  518. so I can speak

  519. in some fashion

  520. that you'll be able to follow.

  521. Sometimes I'm entirely prepared.

  522. Sometimes I've got

  523. all my notes ready to go.

  524. I can sleep another

  525. couple of hours.

  526. But I always have this

  527. great desire

  528. to get up

  529. and to start preparing

  530. my own soul

  531. to stand before you

  532. each day.

  533. And I don't do this

  534. as an intentional effort.

  535. I don't wake up

  536. on Sunday mornings

  537. and say,

  538. man, this is a big day.

  539. It's important

  540. what we're going to do today.

  541. I'm going to fast

  542. so that I can call down

  543. the favor of God

  544. on what's going on.

  545. But I feel the weight

  546. of Sunday morning.

  547. And I feel the weight

  548. of preaching

  549. the Word of God.

  550. And I'm so aware

  551. of my frailty

  552. and my incapability

  553. of doing a good job

  554. of it apart from

  555. God working.

  556. And I find that often

  557. I don't eat

  558. on Sunday mornings.

  559. Not as a choice.

  560. I don't go,

  561. I'm not going to eat.

  562. I'm not really that hungry.

  563. I just don't think about it.

  564. I so want to see

  565. God move

  566. and work

  567. on our Sunday mornings

  568. that I just

  569. don't think about it.

  570. It doesn't cross my mind.

  571. I'm not hungry.

  572. It's often right

  573. before the service

  574. that I start to get hungry.

  575. Like right now,

  576. I'm pretty darn hungry

  577. right now.

  578. And totally unintentionally,

  579. I love that we do

  580. the Lord's Supper

  581. every Sunday

  582. because I get a snack

  583. that reminds me

  584. that Christ is my nourishment.

  585. Isn't that good?

  586. That I very often remember

  587. as I get that little bit

  588. that hits your stomach

  589. and you go,

  590. okay,

  591. I can get through to lunch.

  592. Right?

  593. But that Christ Himself

  594. is my sustenance.

  595. So in that way,

  596. I fast just about every week

  597. but not as dogma.

  598. If I were hungry at 9 a.m.,

  599. I would eat something.

  600. I don't think of it

  601. in those terms.

  602. I'm just not hungry.

  603. So some examples

  604. of voluntary fasting

  605. in the Scriptures.

  606. Esser chapter 4.

  607. Proceeding this

  608. in chapter 3,

  609. we have the king of Persia,

  610. Ahasuerus,

  611. has,

  612. we've got Mordecai

  613. not bowing down

  614. or paying homage

  615. to Haman

  616. who's been put in charge

  617. of a region

  618. by the king.

  619. So Haman

  620. receives the king's blessing

  621. to have all the Jews destroyed.

  622. Right?

  623. In order to destroy Mordecai,

  624. he receives the king's blessing

  625. to have all the Jews destroyed.

  626. And then chapter 4,

  627. verse 3,

  628. it says,

  629. And in every province,

  630. wherever the king's commands

  631. and his decree reached,

  632. there was great mourning

  633. among the Jews

  634. with fasting

  635. and weeping

  636. and lamenting

  637. and many of them lay

  638. in sackcloth and ashes.

  639. They had this outward expression

  640. of their mourning

  641. for what was going to happen.

  642. And you know why?

  643. They knew this was

  644. a judgment of God.

  645. They knew it was

  646. because of their sin.

  647. They were in captivity

  648. to begin with.

  649. They knew this was

  650. a judgment of God.

  651. And therefore,

  652. wherever the decree reached,

  653. the decree was not

  654. that they should fast.

  655. The decree was that

  656. they would be destroyed

  657. by Haman.

  658. They fasted.

  659. Joel chapter 1.

    Joel 1 chapter mention

  660. Joel brings a word

  661. from the Lord

  662. calling for a fast

  663. to lament the loss

  664. of grain and wine

  665. at the hands of a plague

  666. of locusts.

  667. Again,

  668. as a judgment from God.

  669. They became aware

  670. in this plague

  671. that they were sinful

  672. and God was bringing

  673. a judgment against them.

  674. And so a fast

  675. is called for.

  676. Daniel 9.

  677. Daniel's outpour

  678. of prayer

  679. for his people.

  680. Again,

  681. they're in captivity.

  682. This outpour of prayer

  683. is done

  684. while fasting.

  685. Right?

  686. He's mourning.

  687. He's sorrowful

  688. for the state

  689. of his nation.

  690. And so he fasts

  691. and prays

  692. the beautiful prayer

  693. of Daniel 9.

  694. I'll encourage you to read

  695. at a later time.

  696. There's only one time

  697. in all of the Old Testament.

  698. Right?

  699. This would have been

  700. what the Jews

  701. would have had

  702. to help them

  703. guide the practice

  704. of their own fasting.

  705. There's only one time

  706. that it's commanded

  707. for them to fast.

  708. There's one time a year

  709. for one day,

  710. the day known as

  711. Yom Kippur,

  712. the Day of Atonement.

  713. One day

  714. of the entire year

  715. that they were commanded

  716. as the nation of Israel

  717. to fast.

  718. That was it.

  719. Leviticus 16,

  720. 29-31

  721. is where you can read

  722. about that

  723. if you'd like to.

  724. This fast

  725. was meant to express

  726. their sorrow

  727. for their sins

  728. on the Day of Atonement

  729. when the High Priest

  730. went into the Holy of Holies

  731. and made atonement

  732. for the sins of Israel

  733. for that year.

  734. Right?

  735. It was meant to express

  736. the condition

  737. of their hearts.

  738. A real sorrow.

  739. A real humility.

  740. Right?

  741. Not just some religious

  742. rite and practice.

  743. That's what it was meant for.

  744. So we see it both

  745. being voluntary

  746. and commanded,

  747. but just the same,

  748. it was always meant

  749. to be done

  750. in sorrow

  751. and prayer

  752. and that's why

  753. you reject the food.

  754. You're just not hungry.

  755. You so desire

  756. to see God

  757. move and work.

  758. That is what you hunger for.

  759. That the desires

  760. of your flesh

  761. fade away.

  762. Now the practice

  763. of fasting

  764. in this day

  765. was quite different.

  766. Right?

  767. This fasting

  768. that was being done

  769. by the Pharisees

  770. was quite different.

  771. They in fact

  772. had elevated fasting

  773. to a really high degree.

  774. So much so

  775. that they fasted

  776. twice a week

  777. on Monday

  778. and Thursday.

  779. If you were going

  780. to be part of

  781. the in crowd,

  782. if you were part of

  783. God's crew

  784. in this day,

  785. these Pharisees,

  786. this is the way

  787. in which you fasted.

  788. You didn't eat

  789. sun up to sun down

  790. on Monday

  791. and on Thursday.

  792. You recall

  793. Jesus' parable

  794. of the Pharisee

  795. and the tax collector

  796. found in Luke

    Luke 18 chapter mention

  797. chapter 18.

  798. Beginning of verse 9

  799. we see recorded,

  800. He also told

  801. this parable

  802. to some who trusted

  803. in themselves

  804. that they were righteous.

  805. Hear the wording there.

  806. Who trusted

  807. in themselves

  808. that they were righteous

  809. and treated others

  810. with contempt.

  811. Those who didn't

  812. carry out this

  813. new religious fast.

  814. Verse 10,

  815. Two men went up

  816. to the temple

  817. to pray,

  818. one a Pharisee

  819. and the other

  820. a tax collector.

  821. The Pharisee

  822. standing by himself

  823. prayed thus,

  824. God, I thank you

  825. that I am not

  826. like other men,

  827. extortioners,

  828. unjust,

  829. adulterers,

  830. or even like

  831. this tax collector.

  832. I fast twice a week.

  833. I give tithes

  834. of all that I get.

  835. This is the evidence

  836. of his righteousness

  837. before God.

  838. I fast twice a week.

  839. This man-made law

  840. that had been put in place

  841. which was merely external.

  842. Something they had done

  843. to look more pious

  844. than others.

  845. John MacArthur said

  846. in a sermon

  847. on this text,

  848. Empty ritual

  849. is the enemy

  850. of true godliness.

  851. Empty ritual

  852. is the enemy

  853. of true godliness.

  854. Joel 2,

    Joel 2:12

  855. verses 12 and 13

  856. says,

  857. Yet even now,

  858. declares the Lord,

  859. return to me

  860. with all your heart,

  861. with fasting,

  862. with weeping,

  863. and with mourning,

  864. and rend your hearts

  865. and not your garments.

  866. It's an issue

  867. of the heart.

  868. This is the condition

  869. that needs to be fixed.

  870. This is the condition

  871. that the gospel

  872. of Jesus Christ fixes.

  873. It's distinct in that way.

  874. No other religious system

  875. accomplishes this.

  876. If you practice religion

  877. for that reason,

  878. and if you're here

  879. just because you're going

  880. through those motions,

  881. I would encourage you

  882. to stop.

  883. There are better,

  884. more fun things to do.

  885. If your end is destruction

  886. one day,

  887. you better get it in now.

  888. It's a beautiful day.

  889. Go hiking.

  890. It's a waste of your time

  891. to be here.

  892. If your heart's not regenerate,

  893. if you're not coming

  894. and seeking to worship God

  895. in spirit and in truth,

  896. and you're merely going

  897. through the exterior motions,

  898. what a waste

  899. of your time.

  900. I can think of all kinds

  901. of things I could do

  902. with two hours

  903. of my day.

  904. If it's merely exterior.

  905. If I'm trusting in this

  906. to put righteousness

  907. on myself,

  908. even the preaching

  909. of the Word.

  910. If I say,

  911. I'm glad I'm not like

  912. other men.

  913. I preach the Word of God

  914. on Sunday mornings.

  915. That is not my righteousness.

  916. Christ is my righteousness.

  917. The Gospel is distinct

  918. in this way.

  919. This is what the religions

  920. of the world need to hear.

  921. This is how Christianity,

  922. a devotion to our Lord,

  923. is different than all of them.

  924. And he gives us two

  925. little examples.

  926. These are really kind of

  927. the first parables

  928. that we see recorded in Mark.

  929. Little examples that are

  930. really fairly simple

  931. to make the point.

  932. Would have been very

  933. familiar to them

  934. in their cultural context.

  935. He says to them,

  936. can the wedding guests

  937. fast while the bridegroom

  938. is with them?

  939. As long as they have

  940. the bridegroom with them,

  941. they cannot fast.

  942. The days will come

  943. when the bridegroom

  944. is taken away from them,

  945. and they will fast

  946. in that day.

  947. Weddings,

  948. we get this,

  949. weddings are a time

  950. for joy.

  951. We come together

  952. to celebrate.

  953. It was more so

  954. in this day.

  955. Some wedding festivities

  956. went on for a week.

  957. Much joy was taking place.

  958. Big parties were going on.

  959. You remember what Jesus did

  960. in one of His early miracles?

  961. He turned water into wine.

  962. Jesus was into big parties

  963. and celebrating at weddings.

  964. That's what it was for.

  965. There's actually an old

  966. rabbinic document

  967. called the Megalot Ta'anit.

  968. You don't have to remember that.

  969. I just wanted to say it out loud.

  970. In English,

  971. the scroll of fasting

  972. gave rules

  973. to the way in which

  974. this should take place.

  975. And it forbid fasting

  976. at a wedding.

  977. You know why?

  978. Because no one wanted

  979. these bummers to show up.

  980. Right?

  981. To come in

  982. all self-righteous

  983. and pious

  984. with their makeup

  985. on their face

  986. looking sad

  987. and ruining the buzz

  988. of a wedding.

  989. It was meant

  990. for celebration.

  991. And that's the point

  992. that Jesus is making here now.

  993. He predicts His death.

  994. There's going to come a day

  995. when the bridegroom

  996. is going to be removed from them.

  997. And in that day,

  998. they will fast.

  999. They will.

  1000. It's going to happen

  1001. that they'll fast

  1002. in those days.

  1003. But now,

  1004. I am with them.

  1005. And they have reason

  1006. for much joy.

  1007. This is why

  1008. my disciples don't fast.

  1009. Right?

1010. And I love that Jesus

  1011. is telling you

  1012. why, in fact,

  1013. His disciples aren't fasting.

  1014. I wonder if that's really

  1015. even the case

  1016. for them personally.

  1017. Counted amongst that number,

  1018. I'd go,

  1019. that's a great reason, Jesus.

  1020. That is why

  1021. I'm eating

  1022. and enjoying this food.

  1023. Right?

1024. But this is what He tells us.

1025. This is why they're fasting

  1026. because they're experiencing

  1027. the joy

  1028. of the bridegroom,

  1029. the one

  1030. Jesus Christ.

  1031. Two more examples here.

1032. No one sews a piece

  1033. of unshrunk cloth

  1034. on an old garment.

  1035. If he does,

1036. the patch tears away from it.

1037. The new from the old.

1038. And a worse tear is made.

  1039. This is probably

  1040. a little bit removed

1041. from a lot of your thinking

  1042. because most of you

  1043. probably don't patch

  1044. your own clothing.

  1045. Most cloth we buy

1046. is probably in some way

  1047. fabricated

  1048. so that it's pre-shrunk

  1049. or something like that.

  1050. But,

1051. any of you ever had a horrible,

  1052. I've got some clothes

  1053. that have just been

  1054. shrunk horribly on me.

  1055. And it happens still

  1056. these days

  1057. that you put something

  1058. in the dryer

  1059. in the wrong way

  1060. and it ends up

  1061. a whole lot smaller

1062. than it was intended to be.

1063. And you have to get rid of it

1064. because you can't wear it

  1065. any longer

  1066. because it would be

  1067. obnoxious.

  1068. What's going on here

1069. is when they patched clothing

  1070. they had to pre-shrink

  1071. the patches

1072. before they put it on

  1073. to the clothing.

  1074. So that when

  1075. that patch shrunk

  1076. in the wash

  1077. from the fabric

1078. that had already been shrunk

  1079. it didn't cause

  1080. a greater problem.

  1081. You don't do this.

1082. This was a very simple

  1083. analogy for them.

  1084. They'd all go,

  1085. of course not.

1086. No, you wouldn't do that.

1087. Of course you've got to

  1088. shrink the patch

  1089. before you sew

  1090. the patch on.

1091. It says that no one

  1092. puts new wine

  1093. into old wineskins.

  1094. If he does,

  1095. the wine will burst

  1096. the skins

  1097. and the wine

  1098. is destroyed

1099. and so are the skins.

  1100. But new wine

  1101. is for fresh wineskins.

  1102. He didn't come

  1103. with a message

1104. to patch the old system.

  1105. He didn't come

  1106. to bring in

  1107. a little fix

  1108. to this form

  1109. of Judaism.

  1110. And remember,

1111. this is the apostate Judaism.

  1112. They weren't practicing it

1113. the way it had been

  1114. prescribed to them

  1115. in the Old Testament,

  1116. which was still

  1117. a message of faith.

  1118. So this is not

  1119. Jesus coming

  1120. and replacing

  1121. the Old Testament.

  1122. The Old Testament

  1123. is still gospel saturated.

  1124. But this is the

  1125. apostate form of Judaism

1126. that was being practiced today.

  1127. It's the modern form

  1128. of Judaism.

  1129. It's apostate

  1130. in all manner.

  1131. He didn't come

  1132. just to fix that.

  1133. He came to

  1134. replace

  1135. that.

  1136. He gave us

  1137. another parable,

  1138. Matthew 13,

    Matthew 13:44–46

  1139. verses 44-46.

  1140. He said,

  1141. The kingdom of heaven

  1142. is like treasure

  1143. hidden in a field,

  1144. which a man found

  1145. and covered up.

  1146. Then in his joy

  1147. he goes and sells

  1148. all that he has

  1149. and buys that field.

  1150. Again,

  1151. the kingdom of heaven

  1152. is like a merchant

1153. in search of fine pearls,

  1154. who on finding

1155. one pearl of great value

  1156. went and sold

  1157. all that he had

  1158. and bought it.

  1159. Put away

  1160. everything else

  1161. for the value

  1162. of this treasure.

  1163. Jesus came to

  1164. replace

  1165. not to patch.

  1166. Now in this day,

  1167. if you don't understand,

1168. I'm going to teach you today

  1169. everything I know

  1170. about wine,

1171. which is going to take

  1172. just a few moments.

  1173. But in this day,

  1174. they used goat skins

  1175. to store wine in

  1176. in the process

  1177. of it fermenting

  1178. and they simply,

1179. when they skinned the goats,

1180. they stitched them back up.

1181. They stitched the leg holes

1182. and the neck hole shut

  1183. and that's how they

  1184. stored wine.

  1185. And the process

  1186. of wine fermenting,

  1187. it expands.

  1188. It produces carbon dioxide

  1189. and it expands

  1190. and new goat skin

  1191. does the same.

  1192. It also can stretch

  1193. because it's still

  1194. pliable.

  1195. Old boots,

  1196. you've got to

  1197. condition the leather

  1198. to keep it soft

1199. so it doesn't get all

  1200. dry and brittle.

1201. So they would do this

  1202. and as the wine

  1203. fermented,

  1204. as it was forming,

  1205. it would separate.

  1206. There'd be less

  1207. beneficial parts of it,

  1208. often called dregs.

  1209. I don't know why.

  1210. I didn't take the time

  1211. to figure it out.

  1212. But that would settle

  1213. to the bottom

1214. and they would pour off

  1215. the better portion

  1216. of the wine

1217. into another new goat skin

  1218. and they would continue

  1219. that process

  1220. until the wine was

1221. where they wanted it to be

1222. and then it would be consumed.

  1223. So these sediments

  1224. would settle

1225. and they would do this.

  1226. Once that portion

  1227. was poured out,

  1228. if the wine skin

  1229. was just thrown

  1230. to the side,

  1231. it would get dry,

  1232. it would get brittle,

  1233. it would crack.

  1234. What he's saying is

1235. you can't pour the gospel

  1236. into old,

  1237. dry,

  1238. cracked wineskins

  1239. of religion.

1240. That's not where it belongs.

1241. It'll burst out of it.

  1242. That's the point

1243. that he's trying to make here.

  1244. That you need new,

  1245. a new thing.

  1246. Throw away the old.

  1247. This apostate Judaism.

  1248. You need the gospel

  1249. of Jesus Christ.

  1250. You cannot place

  1251. the gospel of grace

1252. into any system of law.

1253. That is not the gospel

  1254. that we celebrate.

  1255. Now to be clear,

  1256. a response

1257. to the gospel of grace,

1258. the changing of our hearts,

  1259. definitely yields fruit.

  1260. It has to

  1261. to be genuine faith.

  1262. We will live

  1263. a certain way

1264. in light of the truth.

  1265. But we don't earn

  1266. our salvation

  1267. because of the work.

  1268. We get it

  1269. caught before the horse

  1270. all of the time

  1271. this happens.

1272. The rest of the world's religions

  1273. seek to find

  1274. grace with God

  1275. because

  1276. of their action

1277. and not the other way around.

  1278. He gives us grace

  1279. and therefore

  1280. we act.

  1281. I love the story

  1282. of John Bunyan,

  1283. the man who wrote

  1284. Pilgrim's Progress

  1285. when he

  1286. was thrown into prison

  1287. because he was

  1288. preaching the gospel

  1289. without a license

  1290. from the state.

  1291. He was in prison.

  1292. He would actually preach

  1293. in the courtyard

  1294. and people would gather

  1295. around the prison

  1296. in the thousands

  1297. so they threw him

  1298. into a dark dungeon.

  1299. That's where he wrote

  1300. Pilgrim's Progress.

1301. So if you read that book,

1302. if you haven't read it,

1303. you should read that book.

1304. That's where he was at.

  1305. He had a copy

  1306. of his scriptures.

  1307. He had a copy

1308. of Fox's Book of Martyrs

  1309. and he wrote

  1310. Pilgrim's Progress

  1311. there in this

  1312. dark, dark dungeon.

  1313. There were another group

1314. of men who were also

  1315. thrown into the darker

  1316. part of the dungeon

  1317. to their commendation.

  1318. They were also

  1319. preaching the gospel

  1320. without a license.

  1321. Good job, men.

  1322. Right?

  1323. Also,

  1324. evangelical believers.

  1325. But they were

  1326. very concerned

  1327. with his message

  1328. and they said,

  1329. you must stop

  1330. teaching people

  1331. how much God

  1332. loves them

  1333. by grace

  1334. in Christ.

1335. If you keep doing that,

  1336. they're going to do

  1337. whatever they want to.

  1338. Right?

  1339. They saw he was

1340. giving a license to them.

  1341. God loves you immensely

1342. and that will never change

1343. and he pours out grace

  1344. on you in Christ.

  1345. This was his message.

  1346. And they said,

  1347. stop.

  1348. They're going to live

  1349. however they want to.

  1350. They're going to take

  1351. that grace

  1352. for advantage.

1353. They're just going to live

1354. in whatever way they want to.

  1355. And he said,

  1356. no,

  1357. if I teach God's people

1358. about God's love for them,

  1359. they'll do whatever

  1360. he wants.

  1361. Right?

  1362. So it's a natural response

1363. to the gospel of grace

  1364. that we live rightly,

1365. but we don't live rightly

1366. that we might receive grace.

  1367. Now, interestingly,

  1368. to drive this home,

1369. turn to Luke chapter 5.

    Luke 5 chapter mention

1370. Luke adds a little bit

  1371. to the story here

  1372. under the inspiration

  1373. of the Spirit.

1374. He records after the same phrase

1375. we see here in Mark chapter 2.

    Mark 2 chapter mention

  1376. It says,

1377. and then Jesus went on to say,

  1378. so it says,

1379. and no one after drinking

  1380. old wine

  1381. desires new,

  1382. for he says,

  1383. the old is good.

1384. And no one after drinking

  1385. old wine

  1386. desires new,

  1387. for he says,

  1388. the old is good.

1389. Does that get your wheels turning?

  1390. I hope so.

1391. I hope on Sunday mornings

  1392. you don't just go,

  1393. explain please,

1394. but you actually start thinking.

  1395. Get your mind engaged

  1396. in this process

  1397. this morning.

  1398. It's an interesting way

1399. to end his little parable,

  1400. this little journey

  1401. that he's been on,

  1402. because when you're

  1403. looking through it,

  1404. you think,

  1405. well, wait,

  1406. isn't the new wine

1407. the thing that we've just

1408. understood to be the gospel?

  1409. Isn't that what we've understood?

  1410. And yes, it is.

  1411. When he's talking about

  1412. new wine,

  1413. old wineskins,

  1414. the new wine,

1415. he's referring to the gospel.

1416. I just drove that point

  1417. for a little bit.

1418. So then it seems to say

  1419. that old wine

1420. is preferable to new wine.

1421. What is he talking about?

  1422. So it's been suggested

  1423. by some scholars

  1424. that this phrase,

  1425. the old is good,

1426. is people who are content.

  1427. They like the old

  1428. apostate Judaism.

  1429. Right?

  1430. And so therefore,

  1431. it's just the reality,

  1432. the truth of things

1433. that Jesus is saying to them.

  1434. And those of you

  1435. who think you have

  1436. old wine,

  1437. who have drunk

  1438. of the old wine,

  1439. you're just content

  1440. and satisfied with that.

1441. You don't want new wine.

  1442. But that's troubling

  1443. because new wine

  1444. was not as good

  1445. as old wine.

  1446. That's true today.

1447. Now that's all the information

  1448. I have.

  1449. I don't know anything else

  1450. about wine.

1451. Old wine was less tannic,

  1452. was less severe

  1453. in its flavor,

  1454. more mellow.

  1455. It was more nourishing

  1456. than new wine.

1457. It was the much preferred,

  1458. much preferred wine

  1459. over new wine.

  1460. So, I think that

1461. what Jesus is saying here

  1462. is that these people

1463. who say the old is good

1464. are people who have drank

  1465. of the old wine

  1466. of the gospel

  1467. of Jesus Christ.

  1468. I think what he's doing

1469. is he's flipping his analogy

  1470. back on them

  1471. as they are coming

  1472. thinking that they have

  1473. the old religion.

  1474. Right?

  1475. This apostate Judaism.

  1476. They're coming and saying,

  1477. whoa, whoa,

1478. what is this new teaching?

  1479. Right?

  1480. Jesus expresses it

  1481. as a new thing

1482. and then he flips it around

  1483. to say,

  1484. actually,

  1485. it's an ancient thing.

  1486. Right?

  1487. That began before

1488. the foundation of the world.

1489. The gospel of Jesus Christ

  1490. is old wine.

1491. And those who have tasted of it

  1492. never drink new wine.

  1493. Never care for this

  1494. apostate version of Judaism

1495. or any other world religion

1496. or ours for that matter.

1497. The trappings that we tend

1498. to stack on our faith as well.

  1499. It's the old wine.

  1500. Those who've been saved

  1501. by faith through grace

  1502. Noah,

  1503. Abraham,

  1504. Moses,

  1505. Isaiah,

  1506. to name a few.

  1507. These were drinkers

  1508. of the old wine.

1509. The wine that the apostles

  1510. drank of.

  1511. These that were now

  1512. not fasting

  1513. because they understood

  1514. the gospel of grace.

1515. But they were rather rejoicing

  1516. while the bridegroom

  1517. was with them.

  1518. I believe that's what

  1519. he's saying to these.

  1520. That have created

  1521. a religious system

  1522. and have replaced

  1523. the old good message

  1524. of the gospel

  1525. of Jesus Christ.

1526. We see the first proclamation

1527. of it in Genesis chapter 3.

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  1528. I hope and pray

  1529. that Adam drank deeply

  1530. of that.

1531. One day we might rejoice

  1532. in heaven with him.

  1533. And so today,

1534. you have to ask yourself

  1535. the question,

  1536. if you're here,

  1537. are you here

  1538. because you have

  1539. genuine saving faith

  1540. in Christ?

1541. Is it because you believed

  1542. the gospel of grace?

  1543. Are you here

  1544. because you merely

1545. find this an external thing

  1546. in the hopes

  1547. that you might

  1548. earn favor?

  1549. If you have fasted

  1550. or are considering fasting,

  1551. is that why

  1552. you would do that?

  1553. Because you think

  1554. in some way

1555. you can work your way

  1556. to God.

  1557. You can't.

  1558. Our righteousness

  1559. is found in Christ.

  1560. Christ.

1561. That is where it's from.

  1562. When God sees us,

  1563. He sees Christ

  1564. because of what Christ

  1565. has accomplished

  1566. on our behalf.

  1567. And if you haven't,

  1568. I pray this morning

  1569. that you will drink

  1570. of the old wine

1571. of the gospel of grace.

  1572. That you will repent

  1573. and believe,

  1574. which is the call

1575. that Jesus has given to us

  1576. in chapter 1,

  1577. verse 15.

  1578. And those of you

  1579. who have drank

  1580. of the old wine,

  1581. why do we trade

  1582. what is good

1583. for what is of lesser value?

1584. We do this so often.

  1585. Right?

  1586. Having begun

  1587. by the Spirit,

  1588. Paul says in Galatians,

  1589. are we now being

  1590. perfected by our flesh?

  1591. In this rhetorical,

  1592. again,

  1593. sarcasm.

  1594. No,

  1595. of course we're not.

  1596. We've begun

  1597. by the Spirit

  1598. and we're being

  1599. perfected

  1600. by the Spirit.

  1601. Why do we

  1602. so often

  1603. march off

  1604. on our own

  1605. thinking that

  1606. in some way

1607. we can get it right?

  1608. We can't.

  1609. In our flesh,

  1610. we get it wrong

  1611. every time

  1612. without a doubt.

  1613. This whole analogy

  1614. ought to draw us

  1615. into desperation

  1616. for God to continue

  1617. to move

  1618. and to work

  1619. in our living.

1620. I want to exalt Christ

1621. with all of my life.

1622. I want to lift Him up.

1623. This life is so fleeting

1624. and this is the highest aim

  1625. of any man's life.

1626. This is what I want to do.

  1627. And I know,

  1628. at least here,

  1629. day by day,

1630. that I cannot accomplish that

1631. apart from His work in me.

1632. Why do I so often

1633. try to do it on my own?

  1634. And every time

  1635. I fail,

  1636. those of us

  1637. who have drunk

  1638. of the old wine

  1639. need to continue

  1640. to do that

  1641. and to live

  1642. by the grace

  1643. that's been given us.

  1644. And the Lord's Supper,

  1645. again,

  1646. is this display.

  1647. It's old wine.

  1648. It's actually grape juice,

  1649. but it represents that,

  1650. doesn't it?

  1651. The symbols

1652. of the Gospel of Christ.

  1653. His body broken

  1654. and His blood spilt

  1655. on our behalf.

1656. And so as I'm praying,

  1657. men who have volunteered

  1658. this morning

  1659. to hold those elements,

1660. I'll ask you to go ahead

1661. and make your way back there.

  1662. Reflect upon this.

  1663. Have you drunk

  1664. of the old wine

1665. of the Gospel of Christ?

  1666. Let's pray.

  1667. Amen.
