  1. Go ahead and take out your copy of God's Word and turn to the Gospel of Mark, chapter 3.

    Mark 3 chapter mention

  2. We proceed with our study through Mark's Gospel account.

  3. ! We have come now to chapter 3, verse 20.

  4. Mark chapter 3, I'll begin reading in verse 20.

    Mark 3 chapter mention

  5. Then he went home, and the crowd gathered again so that they could not even eat.

  6. And when his family heard it, they went out to seize him, for they were saying,

  7. He is out of his mind.

  8. And the scribes who came down from Jerusalem were saying,

  9. He is possessed by Beelzebul, and by the prince of demons he casts out the demons.

  10. And he called them to him and said to them in parables,

  11. How can Satan cast out Satan?

  12. If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand.

  13. And if a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand.

  14. And if Satan has risen up against himself and is divided, he cannot stand.

  15. But is coming to an end.

  16. But no one can enter a strong man's house and plunder his goods,

  17. unless he first binds the strong man.

  18. Then indeed he may plunder his house.

  19. Truly I say to you, all sins will be forgiven the children of man,

  20. and whatever blasphemies they utter.

  21. But whoever blasphemies against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness,

  22. but is guilty of an eternal sin.

  23. For they were saying, He has an unclean spirit.

  24. And his mother and his brothers came.

  25. And standing outside, they sent to him and called him.

  26. And a crowd was sitting around him, and they said to him,

  27. Your mother and your brothers are outside seeking you.

  28. And he answered them, Who are my mother and my brothers?

  29. And looking about those who sat around him, he said,

  30. Here are my mother and my brothers.

  31. For whoever does the will of God, he is my brother and sister and mother.

  32. Please pray with me.

  33. Father God, we thank you for your word,

  34. and the reading of it, and the preaching of it.

  35. And pray, Father, this day, by the power of your Spirit,

  36. for those of us who know you,

  37. and have been given the gift of the Helper,

  38. that you will apply these words to our heart,

  39. that we might be transformed this day.

  40. And I pray, Father, for anyone here who may not have placed faith in Christ,

  41. who may not believe he is who he says he is,

  42. and that he did, in fact, accomplish the things that we see recorded in the Scriptures,

  43. that this will be the last day that would be true of them,

  44. that they might believe today and be saved.

  45. And we pray this in Christ's precious, holy, and magnified name.

  46. Amen.

  47. So this is a bit of a chunk of text,

  48. particularly for us as we typically try to take a little bit smaller bites of things

  49. and ruminate on them a bit more.

  50. But I had a very difficult time not including verse 20 down through 35.

  51. For most of you, as we read that,

  52. you probably noticed that we passed by a couple of subheadings.

  53. Please know that those are not inspired in any way whatsoever.

  54. From the ESV that I'm reading here,

  55. these are inserted,

  56. and most of us have the same insertions of this.

  57. But you'll find that as we looked at verse 28 and verse 29,

  58. this is the text that is often talked about.

  59. This is where the unpardonable sin is preached from.

  60. And there's lots and lots of misunderstanding about what that is and what that means.

  61. And I hope for us here,

  62. those of you who are regulars with us,

  63. this causes a little bit of grief in you

  64. to see when he says at the end of verse 29,

  65. but is guilty of an eternal sin.

  66. What does that mean?

  67. Because we preach a gospel of forgiveness.

  68. A gospel that comes by grace alone through faith

  69. and Christ alone forever.

  70. We believe that our sins are expunged from us.

  71. That they are cast as far as the east is from the west.

  72. That they are forgotten.

  73. That when God looks at us who have believed in Christ,

  74. He sees the righteousness of Christ.

  75. So we preach a gospel of forgiveness.

  76. And here we see it taught that there's a sin that cannot be forgiven

  77. and that should cause a little bit of conflict in you

  78. until we arrive together, I hope,

  79. at what this really means and how we should understand it.

  80. There are lots and lots of entirely unacceptable understandings

  81. of what the unpardonable sin is.

  82. Some people believe it's just simply saying something against the Holy Spirit.

  83. That if in some way you speak poorly of,

  84. it's what this term blasphemy means,

  85. is to belittle or to utter a,

  86. some kind of a condemnation against the Spirit,

  87. that you are therefore cursed.

  88. That there is no way you could possibly ever have

  89. forgiveness and acceptance in God.

  90. I've actually seen some people make the case

  91. that it's perfectly acceptable to cuss in God's name

  92. and Jesus Christ's name,

  93. but not in the Spirit's name,

  94. which if you think cussing is cool,

  95. that would definitely take your cool factor down

  96. if you cuss the Holy Spirit's name.

  97. That's not what this means.

  98. Rather commonly,

  99. it's believed to be that

  100. it's the act of denying some work of the Spirit,

  101. whether that's a real work or a supposed work.

  102. The charismatic movement is classic for railing this against

  103. those of us who don't believe that the Spirit works

  104. in exactly the same way they do,

  105. that we are committing a blasphemy of the Spirit

  106. because we don't think that the falling out

  107. and the speaking in tongues

  108. and all these things that are happening

  109. in these particular settings

  110. are actually the work of the Spirit,

  111. and therefore that is a blasphemy of the Spirit.

  112. I'd say to you now,

  113. none of these are what Jesus means at all.

  114. There are some more acceptable understandings of it,

  115. although I think we'll see

  116. as we look at the context together

  117. that they're a little bit narrow.

  118. One being an act of resistance

  119. which belittles the Holy Spirit so grievously

  120. that He withdraws forever

  121. with His convicting power.

  122. So we're not able to repent and be forgiven.

  123. Others say that it's simply,

  124. as Jesus is responding to the Pharisees,

  125. that it is to say that Jesus worked by a power

  126. other than the power of the Holy Spirit.

  127. And both of these things are true

  128. in their proper sense,

  129. but I don't think they're quite inclusive enough

  130. of what Jesus is trying to teach here.

  131. And so let me tell you,

  132. not to leave you hanging too long,

  133. quick summary,

  134. and then I'll build the case

  135. for why I believe

  136. that what Jesus is saying here

  137. is that the unpardonable sin

  138. is denying that Jesus is the Christ

  139. or the anointed one with finality.

  140. Denying that Jesus is the Christ

  141. with finality.

  142. And I arrive at that

  143. by looking at the context.

  144. That's why we started in verse 20

  145. and we're ending in verse 35.

  146. It's incredibly important.

  147. But before we even get to that,

  148. we should look at the context

  149. of the Gospel of Mark to this point.

  150. There have been many proclamations

  151. up to this point

  152. that Jesus is in fact the Son of God,

  153. the Christ,

  154. the one who has come

  155. to bring forgiveness to His people.

  156. Mark states that

  157. in chapter 1, verse 1.

  158. He says the beginning of the Gospel

  159. of Jesus Christ,

  160. the Son of God.

  161. John the Baptist makes that declaration

  162. in chapter 1, verse 8.

  163. He says,

  164. I have baptized you with water,

  165. but He will baptize you

  166. with the Holy Spirit.

  167. God the Spirit and God the Father

  168. have declared that Jesus is the Christ.

  169. When Jesus was baptized,

  170. the Spirit of God descended on Him

  171. like a dove,

  172. which would have been representative

  173. of both the indwelling power

  174. of the Spirit in His life

  175. and the blessing of the Spirit.

  176. And God spoke out of heaven

  177. and said in verse 11 of chapter 1,

  178. You are my beloved Son.

  179. With you I am well pleased.

  180. This was a fulfillment

  181. of messianic prophecy.

  182. 2 Samuel 7, 12-14.

  183. A promise given to David

  184. speaking of his son Solomon,

  185. but in a greater way

  186. speaking of the Christ.

  187. Nathan said to David,

  188. When your days are fulfilled

  189. and you lie down with your fathers,

  190. I will raise up your offspring after you

  191. who shall come from your body

  192. and I will establish his kingdom.

  193. He shall build a house for my name

  194. and I will establish the throne

  195. of his kingdom forever.

  196. I will be to him a father

  197. and he shall be to me a son.

  198. This is speaking both of Solomon

  199. and of our Lord.

  200. And Jesus has declared this of himself,

  201. that he is the Christ.

  202. When he states in chapter 2,

  203. verses 10-11,

  204. that he has the power to forgive sin.

  205. And in chapter 2, verse 28,

  206. when he says that he is the Lord

  207. of the Sabbath.

  208. This has been established,

  209. this reality,

  210. throughout the book so far.

  211. Now as we look at our text today,

  212. beginning in verse 20

  213. and going through verse 35,

  214. there emerges a common literary device

  215. that was used in the days of Mark.

  216. I've said to you before

  217. that this was a rhetorical writing,

  218. not in the sense that we use rhetoric today,

  219. which is typically pointless argument

  220. or unvaluable argument,

  221. just meant to convince people of something.

  222. But this would have been considered

  223. valuable argument,

  224. based in fact,

  225. but aimed at convincing us of something.

  226. You see here,

  227. we're being driven towards understanding

  228. that Jesus is in fact the Christ.

  229. And he uses a literary form

  230. called a chiasm.

  231. It's not important for you to write down,

  232. but I happen to know what it's called.

  233. So there you have it.

  234. It's called a chiasm.

  235. And he follows a pattern,

  236. beginning in verse 20

  237. and working himself down to verse 35.

  238. And a chiasm is reflective.

  239. So if you can track this in your mind,

  240. we have A, B, C, C prime, B prime, A prime.

  241. They reflect one another.

  242. And we see this in verse 20.

  243. We see a crowd.

  244. In verse 21, we see Jesus' family.

  245. There's A and B.

  246. C, verse 22, we see the scribes.

  247. Then in verses 23 through 30,

  248. he addresses the scribes.

  249. Verse 31 through 33,

  250. he addresses the family.

  251. In verse 34 through 35,

  252. he addresses the crowd.

  253. This is significant.

  254. It means that this was meant

  255. to be taken together.

  256. So as we look at verse 28 and 29,

  257. and we really try to understand

  258. what is it that Jesus was teaching,

  259. we can't simply look at verse 28 and 29.

  260. We have to look at the context.

  261. We have to back up to this broader picture

  262. of this situation that's happening

  263. with the scribes and the crowd

  264. and his family.

  265. Very significant in this way.

  266. So let me say to you again,

  267. my assertion is that the unpardonable sin

  268. is denying that Jesus is the Christ

  269. with finality.

  270. The same account of this story

  271. in Matthew chapter 12.

    Matthew 12 chapter mention

  272. Let me ask you to actually turn there.

  273. I'm going to show you a few things

  274. from this text.

  275. Matthew chapter 12, verse 32.

    Matthew 12:32

  276. Jesus says,

  277. And whoever speaks a word

  278. against the Son of Man

  279. will be forgiven.

  280. But whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit

  281. will not be forgiven,

  282. either in this age

  283. or in the age to come.

  284. So here, Jesus is saying,

  285. If you speak words against me,

  286. Jesus, the Christ,

  287. you'll be forgiven.

  288. But if you speak words against the Spirit,

  289. you will not be forgiven.

  290. So this seems to be contradictory

  291. to the very thing I just told you,

  292. that the unpardonable sin is denying that Jesus is the Christ with finality.

  293. So as he's making this point to us,

  294. we must understand why would he have chosen to say this the way that he said it.

  295. Now note firstly, in verse 32 of chapter 12,

  296. he uses a term he gives to himself consistently and constantly,

  297. son of man.

  298. He talks about his humanity in this case.

  299. And we see many, many insults railed against him,

  300. many blasphemies spoken against Jesus himself as he is here on earth.

  301. So keep that in mind.

  302. But also recognize that when Jesus was here on earth in human form,

  303. his will and his power,

  304. his will and his power as he was absolutely God,

  305. his will and his power bowed to that of the Father and of the Spirit.

  306. He set aside that part of his deity.

  307. Jesus could have come down and done whatever he wanted to do,

  308. but he set it aside and he bowed that will and that power

  309. to that of the Father and of the Spirit.

  310. John chapter 5, verse 19.

    John 5:19

  311. Jesus says,

  312. Truly, truly, truly, I say to you,

  313. the Son can do nothing of his own accord,

  314. but only what he sees the Father doing.

  315. For whatever the Father does,

  316. the Son does likewise.

  317. Right?

  318. He was humble in that way.

  319. He took direction from the Father.

  320. John chapter 14, verses 10 and 11.

    John 14:10

  321. He says,

  322. Do you not believe that I am in the Father

  323. and the Father is in me?

  324. The words that I say to you,

  325. I do not speak on my own authority,

  326. but the Father who dwells in me

  327. does his work.

  328. Here's the Spirit abiding within him.

  329. Believe me that I am in the Father

  330. and the Father is in me.

  331. Or else, believe on account of the works themselves.

  332. So both the things that he spoke

  333. and the things that he did

  334. were in submission to the work of the Father

  335. and of the Spirit.

  336. So here we have this understanding

  337. that he's bowing now to the will of the Father

  338. that is accomplished by the work of the Spirit.

  339. And we have to then talk a bit about

  340. what is it that the Spirit exists to do?

  341. Why is it that not believing

  342. that Jesus is the Christ with finality

  343. would be to blaspheme the Spirit?

  344. Would be to insult the Holy Spirit of God?

  345. It's kind of a phrase that we've lost.

  346. I think it's been mentioned here now

  347. in the last couple of months

  348. a couple of times.

  349. But that the Spirit of God

  350. is often referred to as the shy spirit.

  351. The Spirit of God works in this world

  352. not to magnify himself,

  353. as many believe,

  354. but to rather magnify and exalt Christ.

  355. Listen to what Jesus says about the Spirit.

  356. John 14, verse 26.

    John 14:26

  357. But the Helper, the Holy Spirit...

  358. So we see this term Helper.

  359. He defines for us what he means.

  360. But the Helper, the Holy Spirit,

  361. whom the Father will send in my name,

  362. he will teach you all things

  363. and to bring remembrance to all things

  364. that I have said to you.

  365. He is going to come to help you remember

  366. all of the things,

  367. he's speaking to the apostles,

  368. that Jesus had taught them.

  369. Chapter 15, verse 26.

  370. Jesus says,

  371. But when the Helper comes,

  372. whom I will send to you from the Father,

  373. the Spirit of truth,

  374. who proceeds from the Father,

  375. he will bear witness about me.

  376. Chapter 16, verses 12-14.

  377. I still have many things to say to you,

  378. but you cannot bear them now.

  379. When the Spirit of truth comes,

  380. he will guide you into all the truth.

  381. For he will not speak on his own authority,

  382. but whatever he hears, he will speak.

  383. And he will declare to you

  384. the things that are to come.

  385. He will glorify me,

  386. for he will take what is mine

  387. and declare it to you.

  388. So here is the work of the Spirit.

  389. It's to exalt Jesus as the Christ.

  390. So denying that Jesus is the Christ

  391. with finality

  392. is to blaspheme the Spirit

  393. and that his work is not taking effect.

  394. It's not having an effectual work

  395. in your heart.

  396. All of this is really a matter of the heart.

  397. Not so much about what we say,

  398. but about what we believe.

  399. About who we are at our very core.

  400. And we become who we are as Christians

  401. by the work of the Spirit.

  402. We were once dead in trespasses and sins.

  403. Our heart were stoned.

  404. But God sent his Son

  405. that by his Son,

  406. he could send a Spirit into our hearts

  407. to make them hearts of flesh.

  408. That we might believe

  409. that faith would be birthed in us

  410. to pursue him

  411. and be disciple-making disciples

  412. of Jesus Christ.

  413. So this is a matter ultimately of the heart.

  414. I hope you're still in Matthew 12.

  415. I didn't deceive you

  416. and tell you I wouldn't show you

  417. something from there

  418. and just show you verse 32.

  419. This is the more extended account

  420. of this interaction with these scribes.

  421. Now, I want to point out to you

  422. that in verse 22,

  423. the record in Mark

  424. is that the scribes

  425. who came down from Jerusalem...

  426. Jesus at this point

  427. has already had

  428. many scribes and Pharisees

  429. following him around,

  430. railing accusations at him,

  431. trying to discredit

  432. the things that he was saying

  433. to be true of himself.

  434. Ultimately,

  435. what he would be crucified for

  436. would be for blaspheming God,

  437. for saying that he himself

  438. was God.

  439. And here we see

  440. now kind of a raising of the bar.

  441. They've called in the big shots.

  442. The scribes were the theological experts

  443. of the day for apostate Judaism.

  444. Right?

  445. So they've called in the big wigs now.

  446. The ones who reside in Jerusalem

  447. have now come to accuse him.

  448. So beginning in verse 30

  449. of Matthew 12,

  450. Jesus sets for us some position.

  451. He says,

  452. For whoever is not with me

  453. is against me.

  454. And whoever does not gather with me

  455. scatters.

  456. Two categories of humanity.

  457. Those who are with Christ,

  458. who believe he is

  459. who he says he is,

  460. and those who do not.

  461. Verse 31,

  462. Therefore I tell you,

  463. every sin and blasphemy

  464. will be forgiven people,

  465. but the blasphemy against the Spirit

  466. will not be forgiven.

  467. It's our same thing

  468. we found in verse 29.

  469. And whoever speaks a word

  470. against the Son of Man

  471. will be forgiven,

  472. but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit

  473. will not be forgiven,

  474. either in this age

  475. or in the age to come.

  476. Now here we go.

  477. Here's my context.

  478. It's so important.

  479. Jesus goes on to say

  480. in verse 33,

  481. Either make the tree good

  482. and its fruit good,

  483. or make the tree bad

  484. and its fruit bad.

  485. For the tree is known

  486. by its fruit.

  487. You brood of vipers,

  488. how can you speak good

  489. when you are evil?

  490. For out of the abundance

  491. of the heart

  492. the mouth speaks.

  493. The good person

  494. out of his good treasure

  495. brings forth good.

  496. And the evil person

  497. out of his evil treasure

  498. brings forth evil.

  499. I tell you,

  500. on the day of judgment

  501. people will give an account

  502. for every careless word

  503. they speak.

  504. For by your words

  505. you will be justified

  506. and by your words

  507. you will be condemned.

  508. Our words give evidence

  509. of what we believe.

  510. Right?

  511. Out of the outflow of the heart

  512. the mouth speaks.

  513. So for you to deny

  514. that Jesus is the Christ

  515. with finality,

  516. and I'll explain what I mean

  517. by that here eventually,

  518. to deny that

  519. gives evidence

  520. of where your heart is.

  521. If you do not believe

  522. that Jesus is the Christ,

  523. you are not regenerate.

  524. You do not have

  525. the Spirit of God.

  526. You do not have that seal

  527. that the accomplished work

  528. of Christ was done

  529. on your behalf

  530. and therefore

  531. you are damned.

  532. But if you do,

  533. if you do recognize

  534. that Jesus Christ

  535. is who He says He is,

  536. you believe

  537. in His person

  538. and His work,

  539. you can have great confidence

  540. in that.

  541. this is important doctrine

  542. for us.

  543. It's important for us

  544. to get this right.

  545. As John MacArthur said,

  546. properly understanding this

  547. brings comfort

  548. to the fearful

  549. and should bring fear

  550. to the comforted.

  551. Those of us

  552. who understand

  553. the weight of sin,

  554. understand the great offense

  555. that it is

  556. to our God

  557. should be fearful

  558. of judgment.

  559. But this should bring us

  560. great comfort

  561. that we believe

  562. that Jesus

  563. is the Christ.

  564. That His accomplished

  565. work on the cross

  566. has meaning

  567. for my life

  568. today.

  569. That there is no thing

  570. that I can do

  571. that will not be

  572. forgiven

  573. by grace

  574. in Christ.

  575. There's a

  576. fairly common argument

  577. made,

  578. was originally

  579. penned,

  580. I'm sure it was made

  581. prior to this,

  582. by C.S. Lewis.

  583. It's often summed up

  584. as the liar,

  585. lunatic,

  586. or Lord argument.

  587. If you ever heard this,

  588. it's an argument

  589. against Jesus

  590. simply being a good

  591. and moral teacher.

  592. I heard it said

  593. that a lot of people

  594. in this world

  595. think that Jesus

  596. was just a rather

  597. good guy.

  598. I've heard very few

  599. people say

  600. that He wasn't.

  601. Just kind of a good guy,

  602. but He made some

  603. really audacious claims,

  604. didn't He?

  605. He claimed to be

  606. the Son of God.

  607. He claimed to be

  608. the way,

  609. the truth,

  610. the life.

  611. And so,

  612. C.S. Lewis wrote

  613. in this great quote,

  614. essentially,

  615. in summation,

  616. that you have to believe

  617. either that He's a liar,

  618. a lunatic,

  619. or Lord.

  620. And I think He probably

  621. pulled that

  622. from this text itself.

  623. So listen carefully

  624. to what C.S. Lewis wrote

  625. in a book he wrote

  626. called Mere Christianity.

  627. A man who was merely

  628. a man and said

  629. the sort of things

  630. Jesus said

  631. would not be

  632. a great moral teacher.

  633. He would either

  634. be a lunatic

  635. on the level

  636. with a man

  637. who says he is

  638. a poached egg,

  639. or he would be

  640. the devil of hell.

  641. You must take

  642. your choice.

  643. Either this was

  644. and is the Son of God,

  645. or else a madman,

  646. or something worse.

  647. You can shut him up

  648. for a fool,

  649. or you can fall

  650. at his feet

  651. and call him Lord

  652. and God.

  653. But let us not come

  654. with any patronizing nonsense

  655. about his being

  656. a great human teacher.

  657. He has not left

  658. that open to us.

  659. The things he said

  660. were so audacious

  661. that we either

  662. have to dismiss him

  663. completely

  664. or worship him

  665. as the Christ.

  666. We see in our text here,

  667. we see all of these

  668. different summations

  669. of who Jesus was.

  670. Liar, lunatic,

  671. or Lord.

  672. The Pharisees

  673. are essentially

  674. the scribes

  675. who are accusing him

  676. of being a liar.

  677. Verse 22,

  678. they said,

  679. and the scribes

  680. came down from Jerusalem

  681. and were saying,

  682. he is possessed

  683. by Beelzebul

  684. and by the prince

  685. of demons.

  686. He casts out

  687. the demons.

  688. This term they gave

  689. to him,

  690. Beelzebul,

  691. was a bit of a changing

  692. of a common term

  693. used of the devil.

  694. We use today

  695. Beelzebub.

  696. It's used five times

  697. in the Old Testament

  698. and it's derived

  699. from a Canaanite god,

  700. the lord of the

  701. Ekronites,

  702. which was

  703. Beelzebub,

  704. which meant in Hebrew

  705. lord of the high place.

  706. But they had changed

  707. that word a bit

  708. and just swapped out

  709. the B

  710. and replaced it

  711. with the L

  712. and that one little letter

  713. changed the meaning

  714. to mean lord of the flies.

  715. Interesting.

  716. Right?

  717. Which expressed

  718. the Jewish disdain

  719. for the god of the Canaanites.

  720. This was their way

  721. of really saying

  722. that they hated Satan.

  723. Right?

  724. This false god.

  725. That was a way

  726. of really belittling him.

  727. And this is the very accusation

  728. that they're making

  729. of Christ

  730. who has said,

  731. I am myself god.

  732. They're calling him

  733. the great antithesis

  734. to who God is

  735. and was

  736. and will be forever.

  737. And that is this

  738. false god

  739. of the Ekronites

  740. that they contorted

  741. the word

  742. to mean the lord

  743. of the flies.

  744. They're accusing him

  745. of being a liar.

  746. They're calling him

  747. something completely different.

  748. And he responds to them

  749. so cleverly

  750. as Jesus always does

  751. in our first

  752. recorded parables

  753. that we see

  754. in the Gospel of Mark

  755. and we'll see many more

  756. in the coming months.

  757. Verse 23 says,

  758. And he called to them,

  759. Hey, come over here.

  760. And he said to them

  761. in parables.

  762. And he essentially

  763. goes through

  764. a number of true statements.

  765. Things that would be

  766. really hard for anybody

  767. to deny.

  768. How can Satan

  769. cast out Satan?

  770. That makes no sense.

  771. How can someone

  772. who is possessed

  773. by Satan

  774. cast out Satan?

  775. If a kingdom

  776. is divided against itself,

  777. that kingdom cannot stand.

  778. Much civil unrest.

  779. And if a house

  780. is divided against itself,

  781. that house

  782. will not be able

  783. to stand.

  784. Those of you

  785. who are married

  786. know this to be true.

  787. Your house

  788. will not stand

  789. if you seek strife

  790. in it.

  791. And if Satan

  792. has risen up

  793. against himself

  794. and is divided,

  795. he cannot stand

  796. but is coming to an end.

  797. He's simply

  798. rattling off points.

  799. How ridiculous

  800. is it that you're

  801. making an accusation

  802. that I'm casting out

  803. evil spirits

  804. and you're saying

  805. I'm doing that

  806. by an evil spirit.

  807. That makes no sense.

  808. And they would have been

  809. entirely on board

  810. with him at this point.

  811. But then he makes

  812. an even more

  813. audacious statement

  814. when he says,

  815. No one can enter

  816. a strong man's house

  817. and plunder his goods

  818. unless he first

  819. binds the strong man

  820. then indeed

  821. he may plunder his house.

  822. And he's referring here

  823. to the world

  824. being Satan's house

  825. and Satan being

  826. that strong man.

  827. So you wanted to

  828. break into somebody's home

  829. and they're there.

  830. You've got to do something

  831. with the man of the house

  832. or else you're not

  833. going to be able

  834. to take his stuff.

  835. He's going to

  836. overpower you

  837. and call the police.

  838. This is what will happen.

  839. You come into my house

  840. you better come armed.

  841. You better have

  842. more ammunition

  843. and better aim

  844. than I do

  845. if you're going to

  846. plunder my goods

  847. in my house.

  848. This is what you would

  849. have to do

  850. if you're going to

  851. plunder somebody's house.

  852. So it would take

  853. a stronger man

  854. to accomplish this.

  855. So Jesus is again

  856. proclaiming his deity.

  857. Who's stronger

  858. than Beelzebul?

  859. God.

  860. And that is the very thing

  861. that he's saying

  862. to them here.

  863. I am working

  864. by the power

  865. of the Spirit.

  866. I am working

  867. by the power

  868. of God

  869. and that is how

  870. I'm able to cast out

  871. demons.

  872. A very simple

  873. and poignant

  874. argument.

  875. Jesus is

  876. the Christ.

  877. You could take

  878. Jesus for a lunatic.

  879. It's a possibility.

  880. We see his family here

  881. do that very thing.

  882. They come to him.

  883. He's more than likely

  884. in Capernaum.

  885. He's not back

  886. in Nazareth

  887. Nazareth

  888. in Bethlehem

  889. but in Capernaum

  890. kind of his home base

  891. for where he was operating

  892. and there's such a crowd

  893. that they can't even

  894. recline at table

  895. and eat.

  896. They're pressed

  897. into the house.

  898. They're pressed in

  899. around him

  900. and his family comes

  901. and they're in

  902. probably with good motive

  903. trying to get him

  904. out of the situation

  905. he's found himself in

  906. with countless

  907. thousands of people

  908. pressing him in

  909. around him

  910. to see these miracles

  911. because they just

  912. think that he's crazy.

  913. They just think

  914. that he's absolutely

  915. lost his mind.

  916. I like to muse

  917. we have no record

  918. of it but I like to muse

  919. about what it must have

  920. been like to be

  921. the brother of Jesus

  922. and hear your mom

  923. and dad say to you

  924. constantly

  925. why can't you be

  926. more like your brother?

  927. It cracks me up

  928. or what it would even

  929. be like to raise

  930. a perfect child

  931. I'm not sure

  932. I have no idea

  933. what that would

  934. possibly look like

  935. I can dream of that

  936. but here they come

  937. to him and they

  938. have missed the point

  939. at this station

  940. in their life.

  941. They do not get

  942. who he is.

  943. Here in the record

  944. they're denying

  945. that Jesus is the Christ.

  946. Are they not?

  947. They're calling him

  948. a lunatic.

  949. They think he's

  950. absolutely out of

  951. his gourd.

  952. There's no way

  953. that our brother

  954. that my son

  955. Mary

  956. like Mary

  957. she was visited

  958. by an angel

  959. who told him

  960. who he was going

  961. to be.

  962. She gave birth

  963. to an immaculately

  964. conceived child.

  965. How could she not

  966. believe at this point?

  967. Right?

  968. We know

  969. that it's her

  970. because we see

  971. later on

  972. that his mother

  973. and brothers

  974. are outside.

  975. Don't piecemeal

  976. this up.

  977. This is all happening

  978. at the same time.

  979. They've come.

  980. We see the record

  981. of them coming.

  982. He's inside

  983. dealing with the scribes

  984. and the crowd reports

  985. that his mother

  986. and his brothers

  987. are standing outside

  988. to seize him.

  989. Right?

  990. Because they think

  991. he's crazy.

  992. The blessing of this

  993. is that

  994. Jesus must be denied

  995. as the Christ

  996. with finality

  997. for that not

  998. to be forgiven.

  999. John 7.5

  1000. says for not

  1001. even his brothers

  1002. believed in him.

  1003. But then we have

  1004. a record

  1005. in Acts 1

  1006. that as they were

  1007. fearfully gathered

  1008. together and praying

  1009. together,

  1010. those who were

  1011. faithful to Christ,

  1012. his mother

  1013. and his brothers

  1014. were there.

  1015. That they had

  1016. accepted him

  1017. for who he is

  1018. and who he was

  1019. to them.

  1020. Right?

  1021. So it's important

  1022. for us to see

  1023. that that is the

  1024. case.

  1025. Just because

  1026. you've denied

  1027. that Jesus

  1028. is the Christ

  1029. at some point

  1030. in your life

  1031. doesn't mean

  1032. that you can't

  1033. begin to believe

  1034. by the work

  1035. of the Spirit

  1036. that he is now

  1037. the Christ.

  1038. Right?

  1039. That can happen.

  1040. So you must

  1041. reject to be

  1042. guilty of an

  1043. eternal sin.

  1044. You must

  1045. blaspheme the

  1046. Spirit by

  1047. rejecting that

  1048. Jesus is the

  1049. Christ with

  1050. finality.

  1051. So you live

  1052. your life,

  1053. you go about

  1054. your days,

  1055. and when you

  1056. pass and you're

  1057. judged,

  1058. if you have not

  1059. believed that

  1060. Jesus is the

  1061. Christ,

  1062. you don't

  1063. believe in

  1064. his person

  1065. and his

  1066. work for

  1067. the forgiveness

  1068. of your sins,

  1069. that will not

  1070. be forgiven.

  1071. And there is

  1072. your consistency

  1073. with this gospel

  1074. of forgiveness

  1075. that is taught

  1076. over and over

  1077. and over and

  1078. over again in

  1079. the Scriptures.

  1080. This entire book

  1081. speaks of Christ

  1082. and this gospel

  1083. of forgiveness.

  1084. It is all about

  1085. redemptive history.

  1086. So the final thing

  1087. that we're left with

  1088. is to believe

  1089. that he's Lord.

  1090. To believe that he's

  1091. Lord,

  1092. verse 34 and 35

  1093. in Mark chapter 3,

    Mark 3 chapter mention

  1094. he looks around

  1095. at those who sat

  1096. around and he said,

  1097. here are my mother

  1098. and my brothers.

  1099. For whoever does

  1100. the will of God,

  1101. he is my brother

  1102. and sister

  1103. and mother.

  1104. John chapter 6,

    John 6 chapter mention

  1105. beginning in verse 26,

  1106. Jesus says,

  1107. truly, truly,

  1108. I say to you,

  1109. you are seeking me

  1110. not because you saw

  1111. signs,

  1112. but because you ate

1113. your fill of the loaves.

  1114. So there's a massive

  1115. group of people

  1116. that followed him

  1117. around everywhere

  1118. and as we've said

  1119. repeatedly,

  1120. these people were

  1121. not to understand

  1122. as disciples of Christ.

  1123. Many of them,

  1124. most of them,

  1125. were following him

  1126. because of the things

  1127. he was doing.

  1128. He was feeding them.

  1129. He was healing sicknesses.

  1130. He was giving all

  1131. this affirmation

  1132. to the gospel message

  1133. that he was preaching.

1134. But we're not to understand

  1135. that they all

  1136. were regenerate believers

  1137. that were pursuing him

  1138. and he gives us

  1139. evidence of that

  1140. in John 6, 26.

  1141. You are seeking me

1142. not because you saw signs,

  1143. but because you ate

1144. your fill of the loaves.

  1145. Do not work

  1146. for the food

  1147. that perishes,

  1148. but for the food

  1149. that endures

  1150. to eternal life,

1151. which the Son of Man

  1152. will give to you.

  1153. For on him

  1154. God the Father

  1155. has set his seal,

  1156. the Spirit.

1157. Then they said to him,

  1158. what must we do

  1159. to be doing

  1160. the works of God?

  1161. Jesus answered,

  1162. so here's the question

  1163. they're asking,

  1164. right?

  1165. We get this,

  1166. verse 35,

  1167. whoever does the will

  1168. of God,

  1169. he is my brother

  1170. and sister and mother.

1171. What is the will of God?

  1172. This is the question

1173. they ask in verse 28.

  1174. Jesus answered them,

1175. this is the work of God,

1176. that you believe in him

  1177. whom he has sent.

1178. Want to be in the will of God?

  1179. There's your starting point.

  1180. Believe that Jesus

  1181. is the Christ.

  1182. John 6, 40.

  1183. Later in that chapter,

  1184. Jesus says,

1185. for this is the will

  1186. of my Father,

  1187. that everyone who looks

  1188. on the Son

  1189. and believes in him

  1190. should have eternal life,

1191. and I will raise him up

  1192. on the last day.

1193. And how do we do this?

1194. How is it that we

  1195. become regenerate?

  1196. Well, it's a work

  1197. of the Spirit,

  1198. so hear that clearly.

1199. It is a work of God

  1200. on our behalf.

1201. He works in our hearts.

1202. He shifts who we are

1203. and causes us to believe.

1204. But that has to have

  1205. some necessary outflow.

  1206. There has to be

  1207. some visible evidence

  1208. of this thing happening,

  1209. and there's a life of that.

  1210. Oh, the New Testament

1211. is full of all the things

  1212. that should be happening

  1213. in our lives

1214. if we do have faith

  1215. in Christ.

  1216. But the simplest

  1217. and the first thing

  1218. that starts at regeneration

  1219. and continues on,

  1220. Romans 10, 9.

1221. If you confess with your mouth

  1222. that Jesus is Lord

1223. and believe in your heart

  1224. that God raised him

  1225. from the dead,

  1226. you will be saved.

  1227. Back in Matthew,

1228. this is why he's saying

1229. that we will be judged

  1230. by the words

  1231. that come out

  1232. of our mouth.

1233. And so we ought to believe

  1234. that Jesus is

1235. who he says he is.

  1236. You've only got

  1237. three categories

1238. that you can put him in.

  1239. Call him a liar,

  1240. call him a lunatic,

1241. or bow at his feet

  1242. and call him Lord.

  1243. There's a great,

  1244. great stake

  1245. in this whole thing.

  1246. There's a meta-narrative

1247. that hangs over this world.

1248. And it is the reality,

1249. no matter what people's stories are,

1250. whatever situation they come from,

  1251. whatever country

  1252. they were born in,

  1253. socioeconomic,

  1254. ethnic,

  1255. it does not matter.

  1256. There's a commonality

  1257. between all mankind,

  1258. and that is that

1259. we are affected by sin.

  1260. That it has changed

  1261. who we are,

1262. and it has made us rebels.

  1263. Standing in opposition

  1264. to God.

  1265. That everything we do

1266. is in hatred of him.

  1267. It sets us up

  1268. on our own thrones.

  1269. The sovereign of heaven,

1270. we try to supplant him

  1271. in our own lives.

1272. And this is a damnable offense.

  1273. God will send those

1274. who are found in this state

  1275. to hell forever.

  1276. Rightly so.

  1277. Justly so.

  1278. Don't think that's unfair.

1279. If you think it's unfair,

  1280. you don't understand sin.

  1281. You deserve this

1282. if this is where you stand.

1283. But then he sent his Son,

  1284. righteous,

  1285. perfect,

  1286. in every respect,

1287. to be the perfect sacrifice

  1288. on our behalf.

1289. That he might trade with us

  1290. our sin

  1291. and give to us

  1292. his righteousness.

1293. That we would be seen in him.

1294. So God doesn't pass over sin,

1295. but he punished our sin

  1296. in Christ.

1297. And if you're not found in Christ,

1298. you have an eternal doom

  1299. waiting you.

  1300. This is the most

  1301. important question.

  1302. There's this meta-narrative,

  1303. this reality

  1304. that all of us

  1305. are headed towards death

  1306. and miserable death

  1307. forever.

1308. How do we fix that?

  1309. That is the question

1310. that everyone needs to answer

  1311. in their hearts.

  1312. So today,

  1313. if you have already

  1314. answered that question,

  1315. and I truly hope

  1316. everyone in this room

1317. can say it with great confidence,

  1318. Jesus is the Christ.

  1319. I know that.

1320. I can say that with finality.

1321. I know forever and ever

1322. I am redeemed in him.

  1323. Praise God for that.

  1324. But if not,

  1325. I'd ask today

  1326. that you repent

  1327. and believe.

  1328. I've said things

  1329. about the Spirit

  1330. working in your life

1331. and you may not even

1332. understand what that looks like.

  1333. If there's anything

1334. going on in your mind

  1335. that ascends

1336. to this kind of truth,

  1337. just respond to it.

  1338. That is the work

  1339. of the Spirit

  1340. in your heart.

  1341. Just respond

1342. to the Gospel of grace

  1343. in faith.

  1344. Let's pray together.

  1345. Let's pray together.
