  1. Okay, please go ahead and have a seat and join me in the gospel of Mark chapter 4.

    Mark 4 chapter mention

  2. ! It's hard to believe it's already 2014.

  3. If you've had your first denial experience yet, I've written the date 2014 and it just felt so weird to do it already.

  4. And you know this time of year, many people, maybe you, make New Year's resolutions.

  5. It's a common thing that happens and these resolutions are typically aimed at making us better versions of ourselves.

  6. And I was reminded this past week that people have come and gone from our church

  7. and one of their complaints was that the preaching here didn't make them feel good about themselves.

  8. And I was reminded that that's not really the point of why we preach.

  9. And the point of why we preach is to make much of Christ.

  10. And the gospel properly presented will make you feel rather little about yourself.

  11. Those things that you can do and accomplish on your own.

  12. If you really understand the measure of sin, you will see that your image-bearing ability has destroyed by it.

  13. That you were dead in that.

  14. And those of us who have now placed our faith in Christ have been made alive again,

  15. but we still are sick with sin.

  16. It's still something we carry around.

  17. It's a baggage.

  18. It drags us down at times.

  19. And so many New Year's resolutions are aimed at changing that part of us.

  20. What we really ought to be devoting ourselves to is becoming more like Christ.

  21. Depending more on the regenerative power of the Spirit to conform us into His image this year.

  22. And so I hope with me, that's your plan for 2014.

  23. That at the end of 2014, as we come to the first Sunday of 2015,

  24. you can look back and say, my life better reflects the gospel.

  25. I look more like Christ in 2015 than I did at the beginning of 2014.

  26. And that is the aim of Mark's gospel.

  27. He's trying to make much of Christ.

  28. In fact, he doesn't even mention that he's the one that wrote the gospel of Mark

  29. in an attempt to relegate who he is and exalt who Christ is.

  30. It's history and tradition that holds that Mark was the one that in fact wrote this gospel.

  31. And he's been driving us all along at this point to see who Jesus is.

  32. That He is in fact the Son of God.

  33. The Christ.

  34. The one who came to bring redemption to the church.

  35. To make us disciples of Jesus Christ.

  36. To make much of Him.

  37. And so as we look here at chapter 4, I'm going to do kind of an odd thing with it.

  38. I'm going to read to you verse 1-34 to set the context.

  39. And we're going to focus this morning on verses 10-12 to talk about why it was that Jesus spoke in parable.

  40. Before we read together, let me just remind you that last week,

  41. the stage that's set for us as he goes into this next set of teaching

  42. is that he has returned more than likely to Capernaum,

  43. which was kind of his home base in Galilee as he was ministering.

  44. And he encountered, sort of all at the same time, a crowd and his family and the scribes.

  45. And we talked a bit about this idea that C.S. Lewis put into play,

  46. which is more than likely taken from this text,

  47. that you cannot think of Christ as simply a good moral teacher

  48. because he doesn't leave that option open for you.

  49. But you either have to think of him as a liar, a lunatic,

  50. or as Lord, who he actually says that he is.

  51. And there's kind of a two-category system set up here by Mark

  52. that you're either going to be one who does not believe that Jesus is the Christ

  53. or one who does believe that he is the Christ.

  54. Jesus says in verse 35 of chapter 34,

  55. Here are my mothers and my brothers,

  56. for whoever does the will of God,

  57. he is my brother and sister and mother.

  58. Those who do the will of God are part of the family of God.

  59. And we saw that the will of God, the primary will of God,

  60. the place in which all other wills for your life are rooted

  61. is that we believe that Jesus is in fact the Christ, the Son of God.

  62. So that continues here for us as he steps away from Capernaum

  63. and goes back to the seashore as Capernaum was located

  64. along the northwest side of the Sea of Galilee.

  65. And so we'll begin reading in verse 1, chapter 4.

  66. Again he began to teach beside the sea.

  67. And a very large crowd gathered about him so that he got into a boat

  68. and sat in it on the sea.

  69. And the whole crowd was beside the sea on the land.

  70. And he was teaching them many things and parables.

  71. And in his teaching he said to them,

  72. Listen.

  73. A sower went out to sow.

  74. And as he sowed, some seeds fell among the path.

  75. And the birds came and devoured it.

  76. Other seed fell on rocky ground where it did not have much soil.

  77. And immediately it sprang up since it had no depth of soil.

  78. And when the sun rose, it was scorched.

  79. And since it had no root, it withered away.

  80. Other seed fell among thorns.

  81. And the thorns grew up and choked it.

  82. And it yielded no grain.

  83. And other seeds fell into good soil and produced grain,

  84. growing up and increasing and yielding

  85. thirtyfold and sixtyfold and a hundredfold.

  86. And he said,

  87. He who has ears to hear, let him hear.

  88. And when he was alone,

  89. those around him with the twelve asked him about the parables.

  90. And he said to them,

  91. To you has been given the secret of the kingdom of God.

  92. But for those outside, everything is in parables.

  93. So that they may indeed see but not perceive.

  94. And may indeed hear but not understand.

  95. Lest they should turn and be forgiven.

  96. And he said to them,

  97. Do you not understand this parable?

  98. How then will you understand all the parables?

  99. The sower sows the word.

  100. And these are the ones along the path where the word is sown.

  101. When they hear, Satan immediately comes and takes away the word that is sown in them.

  102. And these are the ones sown on rocky ground.

  103. The ones who, when they hear the word, immediately receive it with joy.

  104. And they have no root in themselves, but endure for a while.

  105. Then, when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word,

  106. immediately they fall away.

  107. And others are the ones sown among thorns.

  108. They are those who hear the word,

  109. but the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches

  110. and the desires for other things

  111. enter in and choke the word,

  112. and it proves unfruitful.

  113. But those that were sown on the good soil

  114. are the ones who hear the word

  115. and accept it and bear fruit

  116. thirtyfold and sixtyfold and a hundredfold.

  117. And he said to them,

  118. Is the lamp brought in to be put under a basket

  119. or under a bed and not on a stand?

  120. For nothing is hidden except to be made manifest,

  121. nor is anything secret except to come to light.

  122. If anyone has ears to hear,

  123. let him hear.

  124. And he said to them,

  125. Pay attention to what you hear.

  126. With the measure you use,

  127. it will be measured to you,

  128. and still more will be added to you.

  129. For to the one who has,

  130. more will be given,

  131. and from the one who has not,

  132. even what he has will be taken away.

  133. And he said,

  134. The kingdom of God is as if a man

  135. should scatter seed on the ground.

  136. He sleeps and rises night and day,

  137. and the seed sprouts and grows.

  138. He knows not how.

  139. The earth produces by itself,

  140. first the blade,

  141. then the ear,

  142. then the full grain in the ear.

  143. But when the grain is ripe,

  144. at once he puts in the sickle,

  145. because the harvest has come.

  146. And he said,

  147. With what can we compare the kingdom of God,

  148. or what parable shall we use for it?

  149. It is like a grain of mustard seed,

  150. which, when sown on the ground,

  151. is the smallest of all the seeds on earth.

  152. Yet when it is sown,

  153. it grows up and becomes larger

  154. than all the garden plants,

  155. and puts out large branches

  156. so that the birds of the air

  157. can make nests in its shade.

  158. With many such parables,

  159. he spoke the word to them

  160. as they were able to hear it.

  161. He did not speak to them

  162. without a parable,

  163. but privately to his own disciples.

  164. He explained everything.

  165. Please join me in prayer.

  166. Father, we do thank you this morning

  167. for your word to us

  168. by your scriptures.

  169. And I pray, Father,

  170. by your spirit,

  171. as we boldly approach your throne,

  172. clothed in the righteousness of Christ,

  173. that you will have your way with us,

  174. that you will shape our hearts,

  175. that you will use our frailty

  176. in speaking and hearing

  177. and understanding

  178. to conform us to the image of your Son.

  179. Make us more like Him this morning.

  180. And we pray this in His name.

  181. Amen.

  182. Our religion is a religion of words.

  183. It is the way in which

  184. the power of God is communicated to us

  185. that the gospel itself,

  186. this gospel message,

  187. is the power of God

  188. unto salvation.

  189. Words give meaning and power

  190. and give birth to ideas.

  191. And it is this beautiful idea

  192. of the kingdom of God coming

  193. that Jesus has been presenting to us.

  194. You remember back in chapter 1,

  195. verse 15,

  196. He says,

  197. the time is fulfilled

  198. and the kingdom of God is at hand.

  199. Repent and believe in the gospel.

  200. And He does that so often

  201. in a very common way

  202. in the speaking of parables,

  203. which are short stories,

  204. allegorical in nature,

  205. and they're meant to teach

  206. a much greater truth.

  207. That's why Jesus spoke in this way

  208. was to teach something greater.

  209. So to draw your attention

  210. to Mark 4, 10-12,

  211. let's read it one more time.

  212. And when He was alone,

  213. those around Him with the twelve

  214. asked Him about the parables.

  215. And He said to them,

  216. To you has been given

  217. the secret of the kingdom of God,

  218. but for those outside,

  219. everything is in parables,

  220. so that they may indeed see

  221. but not perceive,

  222. and may indeed hear

  223. but not understand,

  224. lest they should turn

  225. and be forgiven.

  226. So they asked the question,

  227. Jesus,

  228. why is it

  229. that you speak

  230. in parables?

  231. We can see that

  232. in the parallel version

  233. of this story

  234. in Matthew 13.

  235. They say,

  236. why is it

  237. that you speak to them

  238. in parables?

  239. And the answer to that

  240. in the case

  241. that I'll build to you

  242. is that it was

  243. to veil the truth

  244. and to unveil

  245. or to reveal the truth.

  246. To make the truth

  247. very apparent to some

  248. and not to others.

  249. Now you recall,

  250. as you ponder that,

  251. you might think,

  252. well how narrow.

  253. Wouldn't Jesus have wanted

  254. everyone to respond?

  255. Wasn't that the point

  256. of Him coming?

  257. And preaching the gospel?

  258. We've said over and over again

  259. that the signs

  260. that He was doing

  261. was simply designed

  262. to validate the message.

  263. Isn't the message

  264. incredibly important?

  265. And yes,

  266. it certainly is.

  267. But recall

  268. that we've also talked

  269. about how very narrow

  270. Jesus was.

  271. He had an intended point

  272. and a purpose

  273. and a people

  274. that He was coming

  275. to redeem.

  276. This is why

  277. He spoke

  278. in parables.

  279. We've seen great crowds

  280. follow Him.

  281. And I have said to you

  282. repeatedly,

  283. that these people

  284. were not

  285. by and large

  286. regenerate.

  287. These people

  288. did not believe

  289. that He was

  290. who He says

  291. He is.

  292. We see in Acts 1,

  293. we see 120 gathered

  294. after His death.

  295. 120 that were faithful

  296. to the cause of Christ

  297. that saw

  298. who He was,

  299. that He was

  300. the King

  301. of this coming

  302. Kingdom.

  303. So Jesus

  304. is constantly

  305. narrowing

  306. and narrowing

  307. and narrowing

  308. as He speaks.

  309. And so He uses

  310. the veil

  311. and His response

  312. to them,

  313. He quotes Isaiah

    Isaiah 6:8–10

  314. chapter 6,

  315. verses 8-10.

  316. Isaiah 6,

  317. classic text.

  318. We all love

  319. to hear about

  320. the calling of Isaiah,

  321. His response

  322. to go.

  323. Verse 8,

  324. And I heard the voice

  325. of the Lord saying,

  326. Whom shall I send?

  327. And who will go

  328. for us?

  329. And then Isaiah responds,

  330. Here am I,

  331. send me.

  332. And then in verse 9,

  333. God says,

  334. Go and say to this people,

  335. Keep on hearing,

  336. but do not understand.

  337. Keep on seeing,

  338. but do not perceive.

  339. Make the heart

  340. of this people dull

  341. and their ears heavy

  342. and blind their eyes,

  343. lest they see

  344. with their eyes

  345. and hear with their ears

  346. and understand

  347. with their hearts

  348. and turn

  349. and be healed.

  350. Part of Isaiah's

  351. very ministry

  352. was to preach

  353. the coming of the kingdom

  354. of God

  355. to a people

  356. who would not hear it.

  357. It's prophesied right here

  358. that this would be the case.

  359. And in fact,

  360. in the parallel version

  361. of the story we have before us

  362. in Mark chapter 4,

    Mark 4 chapter mention

  363. in verse 14

  364. of chapter 13 of Matthew,

  365. right before Matthew records

  366. his quotation of Isaiah,

    Isaiah 6 chapter mention

  367. chapter 6,

  368. it's recorded,

  369. indeed,

  370. in their case,

  371. those who are outside

  372. of this understanding,

  373. the prophecy of Isaiah

  374. is fulfilled.

  375. That it is,

  376. in fact,

  377. fulfilled in this day

  378. of Jesus

  379. that says,

  380. and then he quotes

  381. from Isaiah chapter 6.

    Isaiah 6 chapter mention

  382. This is a prophecy

  383. that people,

  384. some would understand,

  385. and that some would not,

  386. which is why he spoke

  387. in parables,

  388. to veil the truth.

  389. Paul gives us

  390. a little bit of insight

  391. into this

  392. in 1 Corinthians chapter 2.

    1 Corinthians 2 chapter mention

  393. In verse 8,

  394. he writes,

  395. none of the rulers

  396. of this age

  397. understood this.

  398. He's talking about

  399. the secret,

  400. hidden wisdom of God

  401. in verse 7.

  402. None of the rulers

  403. of this age

  404. understood this,

  405. for if they had,

  406. they would not have

  407. crucified the Lord of glory.

  408. If they had understood

  409. who Jesus was,

  410. they wouldn't have

  411. put him to death.

  412. And it was necessary

  413. that he be put to death

  414. so that the remission

  415. of sins might extend

  416. and expand to all

  417. of mankind.

  418. And then he quotes

  419. also from Isaiah

    Isaiah 64:4

  420. chapter 64,

  421. verse 4,

  422. but as it is written,

  423. what no eye has seen,

  424. nor ear heard,

  425. nor the heart of man

  426. imagined,

  427. what God has prepared

  428. for those

  429. who love Him.

  430. Paul goes on to write

  431. in verse 10

  432. of chapter 2,

  433. that these are things

  434. that have been revealed

  435. to those who are in Christ

  436. by the Spirit of God.

  437. Verse 11,

  438. for who knows

  439. a person's thoughts

  440. except the Spirit

  441. of that person

  442. which is in him.

  443. So also no one

  444. comprehends the thoughts

  445. of God

  446. except the Spirit

  447. of God.

  448. And so Paul for us

  449. kind of brings

  450. these two ideas together

  451. that this was something

  452. that must happen,

  453. that some would not believe

  454. in order that

  455. the redemptive purposes

  456. of Christ

  457. might be completed

  458. so that we can believe

  459. by the power

  460. of His Spirit.

  461. Now it's interesting

  462. as Jesus is talking

  463. to this group of people,

  464. because it's those

  465. around Him

  466. with the twelve

  467. if you'll notice

  468. in chapter 4,

  469. verse 10.

  470. So not just the apostles

  471. but some others

  472. that were gathered

  473. with Him

  474. who have been given

  475. the secret

  476. of the kingdom

  477. of God.

  478. It's important

  479. that we note

  480. that they didn't

  481. still seem

  482. to quite get it.

  483. There was some

  484. understanding

  485. bearing in their hearts,

  486. but yet,

  487. if you look

  488. in verse 33

  489. of chapter 4,

  490. with many such parables

  491. He spoke the word

  492. to them

  493. as they were able

  494. to hear it.

  495. He did not speak

  496. to them without a parable,

  497. but privately

  498. to His own disciples

  499. He explained everything.

  500. Explanation was necessary

  501. for them.

  502. And look later

  503. in chapter 4,

  504. verse 40 and 41.

  505. After Jesus calms

  506. the storm,

  507. He says to them,

  508. Why are you afraid?

  509. Have you still

  510. no faith?

  511. And they were filled

  512. with great fear

  513. and said to one another,

  514. Who then is this

  515. that even the wind

  516. and the sea

  517. obey Him?

  518. They still

  519. didn't quite grasp

  520. who Jesus was.

  521. The light was coming

  522. to bear in their hearts,

  523. but they still had yet

  524. to entirely wrap

  525. their mind around it.

  526. And let that be

  527. an encouragement

  528. to us this morning

  529. as we are about

  530. to launch into a study

  531. of a number of parables

  532. which can be confounding

  533. at times.

  534. We'll take a break

  535. from that,

  536. go back to some narrative,

  537. and we're going to

  538. pick right back up

  539. into many more parables

  540. in the Gospel of Mark.

  541. And they're difficult

  542. to understand at times.

  543. By the Spirit

  544. and the Scriptures,

  545. we come to understand

  546. what it is they mean

  547. as we have a greater degree

  548. of revelation

  549. than these disciples

  550. would have had.

  551. But let it encourage you

  552. that you don't have

  553. to quite get it all

  554. to have the Spirit of God

  555. working in you

  556. and bringing to bear

  557. the truth.

  558. So he taught him parables

  559. to veil the truth.

  560. But he also taught him

  561. parables to reveal the truth.

  562. Here in chapter 4,

  563. this is not the first account

  564. we see of him speaking

  565. in parables.

  566. In fact,

  567. his response

  568. to the Pharisees,

  569. the scribes

  570. that challenged him

  571. back at the end

  572. of chapter 3

  573. were parables.

  574. This idea of a strong man

  575. being in his house

  576. and to plunder his house.

  577. You must come in

  578. and bind the strong man.

  579. He was speaking of

  580. who he is,

  581. that he is in fact God

  582. and he has the power

  583. to bind Satan

  584. and therefore come

  585. and take from the kingdom

  586. of Satan

  587. those who are his.

  588. It's also not the first time

  589. that parables are used generally.

  590. Jesus isn't the first

  591. to use parables

  592. to teach truth in this way.

  593. Back in 2 Samuel,

    2 Samuel 12 chapter mention

  594. chapter 12

  595. in the Old Testament,

  596. God brings David

  597. to conviction

  598. of his sin

  599. with Bathsheba

  600. and Uriah

  601. through the prophet Nathan

  602. through a parable.

  603. Listen to this.

  604. 2 Samuel 12

  605. beginning in verse 1.

  606. And the Lord sent Nathan

  607. to David.

  608. He came to him

  609. and said to him,

  610. there were two men

  611. in a certain city,

  612. the one rich

  613. and the other poor.

  614. The rich man

  615. had very many flocks

  616. and herds,

  617. but the poor man

  618. had nothing

  619. but one little ewe lamb

  620. which he had bought.

  621. And he brought it up

  622. and it grew up with him

  623. and with his children.

  624. He used to eat of his morsel

  625. and drink from his cup

  626. and lie in his arms

  627. and it was like a daughter to him.

  628. Now there came a traveler

  629. to the rich man

  630. and he was unwilling

  631. to take one of his own

  632. flock or herd

  633. to prepare for the guest

  634. who had come to him,

  635. but he took the poor man's lamb

  636. and prepared it for the man

  637. who had come to him.

  638. Then David's anger

  639. was greatly kindled

  640. against the man

  641. in the story.

  642. And he said to Nathan,

  643. as the Lord lives,

  644. the man who has done this

  645. deserves to die

  646. and he shall restore

  647. the lamb for full

  648. because he did this thing

  649. and because he had no pity.

  650. Nathan said to David,

  651. you are the man.

  652. This was how God,

  653. by the prophet Nathan

  654. and the enlightening

  655. of the Spirit,

  656. convicted David

  657. of his great sin.

  658. And then we see

  659. so many laments

  660. in the Psalms

  661. and repentance

  662. for what he had done.

  663. So, Jesus spoke in parables.

  664. God had used parables before.

  665. Jesus speaks in parables

  666. both to veil

  667. and to reveal the truth.

  668. And he sets up for us

  669. again another dichotomy,

  670. two groups of people

  671. that everyone in this world

  672. falls into.

  673. You fall into one of these

  674. two categories.

  675. And here it's stated

  676. in verse 11,

  677. to you,

  678. this is one group,

  679. to you has been given

  680. the secret of the kingdom of God.

  681. And another group

  682. are those who are outside.

  683. This morning,

  684. you're in one of those

  685. two places.

  686. Everyone in this earth

  687. is in one of those two places.

  688. Has been given the secret

  689. of the kingdom of God

  690. or is outside.

  691. And so we have to ask

  692. the question,

  693. what then is the secret

  694. of the kingdom of God?

  695. We should know this.

  696. If we want to find

  697. where we are,

  698. categorically speaking,

  699. in one of these two groups,

  700. are we those

  701. who have been given

  702. the secret of the kingdom of God

  703. or those who are outside?

  704. Do we have the key

  705. that unlocks the parables?

  706. Or should they be

  707. confounding to us?

  708. Should we never understand

  709. what is meant

  710. by all of these parables

  711. about the coming kingdom?

  712. The secret

  713. of the kingdom of God

  714. is the person,

  715. Jesus Christ.

  716. Paul says in 1 Corinthians 1,

    1 Corinthians 1:30

  717. verse 30,

  718. And because of God,

  719. you are in Christ Jesus,

  720. who became to us

  721. wisdom from God,

  722. righteousness,

  723. righteousness,

  724. and sanctification,

  725. and redemption.

  726. So those who have been given

  727. the secret of the kingdom of God

  728. are those who believe

  729. that Jesus is who He says

  730. that He is,

  731. that He is the Christ.

  732. And the others,

  733. those who are outside,

  734. are those who do not.

  735. Turn with me to the parallel version

  736. of this text.

  737. Matthew chapter 13.

    Matthew 13 chapter mention

  738. Matthew chapter 13.

    Matthew 13 chapter mention

  739. We see a more expanded version

  740. of the account beginning in verse 10.

  741. Then the disciples came

  742. and said to Him,

  743. Why do you speak to them

  744. in parables?

  745. There's the question.

  746. Why do you speak to them

  747. in parables?

  748. And He answered them,

  749. To you it has been given

  750. to know the secrets

  751. of the kingdom of heaven,

  752. but to them it has not been given.

  753. There's our two categories.

  754. Then verse 12.

  755. For to the one who has,

  756. more will be given,

  757. and he will have an abundance.

  758. But from the one who has not,

  759. even what he has

  760. will be taken away.

  761. This is why I speak to them

  762. in parables.

  763. Because seeing they do not see,

  764. and hearing they do not hear,

  765. nor do they understand.

  766. Now verse 12 is interesting

  767. because in Mark chapter 4,

    Mark 4 chapter mention

  768. it's recorded in a different spot.

  769. In Mark chapter 4,

    Mark 4 chapter mention

  770. it's in verse 25.

  771. As he concludes

  772. the lamp under a basket parable

  773. as it's headed

  774. in probably most of our Bibles.

  775. It's recorded in a different place

  776. and we'll look more

  777. at why that is

  778. in the coming weeks.

  779. But here we see it's added

  780. to this account.

  781. For to the one who has,

  782. more will be given,

  783. and he who will have an abundance.

  784. But from the one who has not,

  785. even what he has

  786. will be taken away.

  787. What is he talking about?

  788. Has what?

  789. What is it that we are to have

  790. in order to receive more?

  791. An abundance of more.

  792. And what is it that someone

  793. doesn't have,

  794. and even what they have

  795. is taken away?

  796. And what I would say to you

  797. is that thing that Jesus

  798. is referring to here

  799. is faith.

  800. For the one who has faith,

  801. the one who believes

  802. that Jesus is the Christ,

  803. will be given more faith,

  804. an abundance of faith,

  805. saving faith

  806. that will persevere to the end

  807. when all the things

  808. that we hope in

  809. will become a reality.

  810. The ability to see

  811. the kingdom of God

  812. coming to bear,

  813. to experience it

  814. to be true

  815. in our own hearts.

  816. But for the one

  817. who does not have faith,

  818. even what he has.

  819. Now, remember who he's

  820. speaking to primarily

  821. in these settings.

  822. These would have been Jews.

  823. Those who had

  824. the promises of God,

  825. who had what is called

  826. now our modern Old Testament.

  827. They had all of this teaching.

  828. They had Moses.

  829. And the prophets

  830. who spoke of the Christ.

  831. And yet, even this,

  832. this understanding

  833. that they have

  834. is taken away.

  835. I can remind you

  836. in Ephesians 2,

    Ephesians 2:8

  837. verse 8, it says,

  838. For by grace you have been saved

  839. through faith.

  840. And that this is not your own doing,

  841. it is the gift of God.

  842. We need the Spirit of God

  843. to work in our hearts

  844. to bring about faith in God.

  845. And these are the people

  846. who believe,

  847. who can understand,

  848. who are given

  849. the secrets

  850. of the kingdom.

  851. Now, the rest of the text

  852. in Matthew chapter 13,

    Matthew 13 chapter mention

  853. we see a longer quotation

  854. of Isaiah chapter 6.

    Isaiah 6 chapter mention

  855. Indeed, in their case,

  856. the promise of Isaiah

  857. is fulfilled

  858. that says,

  859. you will indeed hear

  860. but never understand.

  861. You will indeed see

  862. but never perceive.

  863. For this people's heart

  864. has grown dull

  865. and with their ears

  866. they can barely hear

  867. and their eyes

  868. have closed.

  869. Lest they should see

  870. with their eyes

  871. and hear with their ears

  872. and understand with their heart

  873. and turn

  874. and I would heal them.

  875. And then verse 16,

  876. but blessed are your eyes

  877. for they see

  878. and your ears

  879. for they hear

  880. for truly I say to you

  881. many prophets

  882. and righteous people

  883. long to see what you see

  884. and did not see it

  885. and to hear what you hear

  886. and did not hear it.

  887. They longed to see

  888. the Christ.

  889. They knew that in some way

  890. the promises of God

  891. would be fulfilled.

  892. They had some hint

  893. of this Messiah

  894. and what he was going

  895. to look like

  896. as they prophesied

  897. about him

  898. but they did not

  899. get to behold him.

  900. They longed to hear

  901. this coming message

  902. of the kingdom of God.

  903. The gospel preached

  904. in its entirety

  905. in the personal work

  906. of Christ

  907. and yet they did

  908. not hear it.

  909. How blessed are we

  910. to be ones

  911. who have received

  912. the secrets

  913. of the kingdom.

  914. We have received Christ.

  915. We have seen

  916. and heard

  917. this great truth.

  918. There are many Jews

  919. today

  920. strict adherents

  921. to

  922. Old Testament

  923. apostate Judaism

  924. that are still longing

  925. and looking

  926. for the Messiah.

  927. And they do so

  928. with an unclear understanding

  929. of who the Messiah is.

  930. I found an article

  931. by a rabbi

  932. I'm sure I should quote

  933. but I forgot to write down

  934. his name

  935. and I lost the article.

  936. And he gave four reasons

  937. why Jesus Christ

  938. is not the Messiah.

  939. It is predicted

  940. in Ezekiel chapter 37

    Ezekiel 37 chapter mention

  941. that he would

  942. build the third temple.

  943. This is yet to happen.

  944. Isaiah chapter 43

    Isaiah 43 chapter mention

  945. that he would gather

  946. all Jews

  947. back to the land

  948. of Israel.

  949. Isaiah chapter 2

    Isaiah 2:4

  950. verse 4

  951. that he would usher

  952. in an era

  953. of world peace

  954. and end all hatred,

  955. oppression,

  956. suffering,

  957. and disease.

  958. Zechariah 14.9

  959. that he would spread

  960. universal knowledge

  961. of the God of Israel

  962. which will unite humanity

  963. as one.

  964. And this is the Messiah

  965. that they are waiting for.

  966. They're waiting for

  967. a Messiah to come

  968. that will accomplish this

  969. in the here and now.

  970. And until they can see

  971. that happen

  972. they are not willing

  973. to believe

  974. that Jesus was the Christ.

  975. But yet,

  976. Jesus is in fact

  977. accomplishing

  978. all these things.

  979. And they will finally

  980. and fully

  981. be accomplished.

  982. The kingdom of God

  983. is at hand.

  984. He reigns even now

  985. doing this very work.

  986. But in this way,

  987. in the fulfillment

  988. of these prophecies,

  989. Jesus has veiled truth

  990. and revealed truth.

  991. Just think of the way

  992. that Jesus came

  993. into this world.

  994. He fulfilled prophecy

  995. in the way He came.

  996. But He came not

  997. as the king they expected.

  998. As they focused in

  999. on these particular

  1000. prophecies of the Messiah.

  1001. Not as the one

  1002. who would ride in

  1003. on a horse,

  1004. a valiant steed

1005. that would be like Saul,

  1006. a head taller

  1007. than everyone else

  1008. and would come

  1009. and conquer Rome

  1010. and restore things.

  1011. But He came instead

  1012. as a humble baby.

  1013. Veiled.

  1014. Born to a humble,

  1015. young,

  1016. teenage girl

  1017. in a stable,

  1018. in a very obscure

  1019. part of the world.

  1020. This Jesus

  1021. that is said

  1022. to be from Nazareth

1023. and we have to qualify

  1024. that it's Nazareth

  1025. of Galilee

  1026. because no one knew

  1027. where Nazareth was.

  1028. Talk about the county

1029. that it was located in

  1030. so you could get

  1031. where it was

  1032. on a map.

  1033. He came in obscure,

  1034. humble,

1035. the son of a carpenter

1036. and He served the world

  1037. in humility.

  1038. They missed this

  1039. because Jesus

  1040. veiled that truth

  1041. in order to reveal

  1042. that truth

  1043. to some of us

  1044. lowly,

  1045. lowly people.

1046. Last night I was playing

  1047. with the boys

  1048. on the floor

1049. and they got a bunch

  1050. of Hot Wheels

  1051. monster trucks

  1052. for Christmas

1053. which is a very cool thing

  1054. that Hot Wheels

  1055. has done

  1056. for boys everywhere.

  1057. And Judah,

  1058. there's eight of them

  1059. and Judah had carefully

  1060. lined them up,

  1061. neat little rows

1062. all facing the same direction

  1063. and didn't want

  1064. that game messed with.

1065. He had his little trucks

  1066. lined up

1067. and he was just laying

1068. on the floor like this

  1069. looking at them.

1070. And so I was laying

1071. on the floor with him

  1072. and we were talking

  1073. about their color

  1074. and counting them

  1075. trying to redeem

  1076. whatever the game was

  1077. for some future knowledge

  1078. and I counted them

  1079. to eight

  1080. and Caveman said,

  1081. he was sitting

  1082. cross-legged next to us

  1083. and said,

  1084. no daddy,

  1085. there are seven.

  1086. I said,

  1087. Caveman,

  1088. your dad's a good counter,

  1089. there are eight.

  1090. And he said,

  1091. no,

  1092. there are seven.

  1093. And I went,

  1094. okay,

  1095. watch.

1096. And I counted them again.

  1097. I put my finger

  1098. on each one,

  1099. counted them,

  1100. eight.

  1101. Here's the evidence,

  1102. look,

  1103. one,

  1104. two,

  1105. three,

  1106. four,

  1107. five,

  1108. six,

  1109. seven,

  1110. eight.

1111. And he kind of gave me

1112. this look when I got to eight

  1113. like,

  1114. I think he's got me.

1115. But he refused to believe

  1116. that there were eight.

  1117. I took his finger,

  1118. made him,

  1119. I held his finger

1120. and I touched each one

  1121. to convince him

  1122. that there were eight

  1123. and he got sad

  1124. that he was wrong

  1125. that there were eight

  1126. and not seven.

1127. And so what he wanted to do

  1128. was take one away

1129. so there would be seven

  1130. in the pile.

1131. And so I had to distract Judah

1132. so he wouldn't get mad

1133. that we messed up his line of trucks

  1134. and took one.

1135. So we had seven left

  1136. in the pile.

  1137. And is this not,

  1138. this made me think,

  1139. is this not

  1140. what the world does

  1141. with Jesus Christ?

  1142. There's so much evidence

  1143. on the table.

  1144. It would seem

  1145. that we should

  1146. by human terms

1147. be able to convince somebody

1148. that Jesus is the Christ.

  1149. Particularly the Jews.

  1150. Right?

  1151. Those who were actually

  1152. waiting for the Messiah

1153. just want to show them

  1154. the Scriptures

1155. and point to the One,

  1156. to Jesus Christ,

  1157. to magnify Him

1158. and that they would get that.

  1159. But they can't

  1160. until the Spirit works

1161. a work in their life.

  1162. They can't.

  1163. It's impossible.

  1164. These are things

1165. that are revealed to us

  1166. by the Spirit.

1167. Now I know that sometimes

1168. that causes a little bit

  1169. of an anxiety

  1170. because we really,

1171. really, really want to believe

1172. that our God is this

  1173. great, big, benevolent God

  1174. and loves the world.

  1175. And you know what?

  1176. He does.

  1177. He does.

1178. The fact that He has redeemed

  1179. even one of us

  1180. is a great expression

  1181. of His love.

  1182. Not to mention

  1183. untold millions.

  1184. Millions.

  1185. Billions.

  1186. I don't know.

  1187. An unmeasurable number.

  1188. A multitude,

  1189. the Scriptures say,

  1190. will be in heaven

  1191. praising our God.

  1192. Right?

  1193. None of us

  1194. deserve this.

1195. When you begin to feel

  1196. in some way

  1197. that as God

  1198. is calling people

  1199. to Himself,

  1200. that He's being unfair,

  1201. that it's not right,

1202. how could a loving God

  1203. exclude people

  1204. from the kingdom?

1205. How could He veil truth

  1206. to some

1207. and reveal it to others?

1208. This makes no sense to me.

  1209. Stop making

  1210. so much

  1211. of man.

1212. We are a created thing.

  1213. Right?

  1214. Humble yourself

  1215. under the Creator

  1216. who is working out

  1217. His redemptive purposes

  1218. in this way.

  1219. Who is expressing

1220. His very being to us

  1221. in this manner.

  1222. What should this kind

1223. of truth do for us?

  1224. Those of us

1225. who are part of this,

  1226. who have been given

  1227. the secret

1228. of the kingdom of God,

  1229. it should cause us

  1230. to praise Him.

  1231. Because we did

  1232. nothing of our own

  1233. to know this thing.

  1234. Right?

  1235. I cannot boast

  1236. in any way

  1237. that I have deciphered

  1238. magically the parables.

  1239. Right?

  1240. We say to you,

1241. I have found the key.

  1242. I have deciphered it.

  1243. I know now

1244. what the kingdom of God

  1245. is all about.

  1246. I can't.

1247. It has been revealed to me

1248. by the Spirit of God.

  1249. I was dead.

  1250. I was cut off

  1251. because of my sinfulness.

  1252. God made me alive

  1253. together with Him.

  1254. Right?

1255. This should be the joy

  1256. of our hearts.

  1257. That He has accomplished

  1258. this for us.

1259. And I will tell you

  1260. that there are many

  1261. harsh reactions

  1262. to the doctrines

  1263. that we teach,

1264. but there are harsh reactions

1265. to things that should not

  1266. be a reality.

  1267. That those of us

  1268. who believe that God

1269. is sovereign in all things,

  1270. that calls those

1271. whom He intends to call

  1272. and doesn't those

  1273. whom He doesn't,

  1274. would make us cold

  1275. and callous

  1276. to the Gospel.

1277. This should not be true

  1278. of us.

  1279. This truth

  1280. is the great motivation

  1281. to share your faith.

  1282. That God is working

  1283. in people's lives.

1284. That He is going into them

  1285. and changing their hearts.

  1286. No amount of logic.

  1287. I consider myself

  1288. a fairly logical person.

  1289. No degree of logic

  1290. on my part

  1291. can convince somebody

  1292. to come to Christ.

  1293. But the Spirit

  1294. can do it

  1295. with the simple words

  1296. of a fool.

  1297. That is an incredible

  1298. reality.

1299. This should be true of us.

  1300. Let me show you

  1301. this context.

  1302. Let me just broaden

  1303. your eyes

  1304. and your mind

  1305. a little bit.

  1306. We see this insertion

  1307. in Mark 4.

  1308. Talking about

  1309. those who have been

  1310. given the secret

  1311. of the kingdom

  1312. were found in one

  1313. of these two categories.

  1314. We believe that Jesus

  1315. is the Christ

  1316. or we do not.

1317. But what is He saying

  1318. in this context here

  1319. at the beginning

  1320. of chapter 4?

  1321. There should be

  1322. some outworking

  1323. of our faith.

  1324. We can't just be

  1325. counted in the crowd

  1326. that follows Jesus around.

  1327. But that we must

  1328. actually be devoted

  1329. to Him.

  1330. There must be

  1331. some degree

  1332. of sacrifice

  1333. and pursuit

  1334. of who He is.

1335. Let me just show you.

  1336. He talks about

  1337. the parable

  1338. of the sower.

  1339. The good soil.

  1340. Verse 8.

  1341. The good soil

  1342. produced grain

  1343. growing up

  1344. and increasing

  1345. and yielding

  1346. thirtyfold

  1347. and sixtyfold

  1348. and a hundredfold.

  1349. Later in His explanation

  1350. of that

  1351. in verse 20

  1352. He uses the term

  1353. fruit.

  1354. This good soil

  1355. bears

  1356. fruit.

  1357. He talks about

  1358. lamps

  1359. not being intended

  1360. to be hidden

  1361. but to shine.

  1362. He's speaking

  1363. in the negative

  1364. but in the positive.

  1365. Lamps shine.

  1366. Lamps give

  1367. light.

1368. I think some of our

  1369. lamps are turned down

  1370. so low

  1371. that they barely

  1372. flicker.

  1373. There's a little flame

  1374. which gives little

  1375. to no light

  1376. in this world

  1377. but lamps

  1378. are meant

  1379. to light

  1380. a room.

  1381. We see the parable

  1382. of the seed growing.

  1383. It does in fact

  1384. sprout

  1385. and grow.

  1386. And the parable

  1387. of the mustard seed

  1388. grows up

  1389. and becomes

  1390. larger

  1391. than all

  1392. the garden plants.

  1393. You see

  1394. that there must

  1395. be some

  1396. outworking

  1397. of our faith

  1398. and here is

  1399. what we see

  1400. Jesus teaching

  1401. to us

  1402. in the parables

  1403. that we're going

  1404. to cover

  1405. in the coming

  1406. weeks.

  1407. You want to know

  1408. which category

  1409. you lie in

  1410. as one who's been

  1411. given the secrets

  1412. of the kingdom

  1413. of God?

  1414. One who has

  1415. actually recognized

  1416. believed in your

  1417. heart that Jesus

  1418. is the Christ?

  1419. There will be

  1420. evidence in your

  1421. life of that

  1422. reality.

  1423. You will

  1424. knowing

  1425. that Jesus

  1426. brought this

  1427. truth to bear

  1428. in you

  1429. desire

  1430. to share

  1431. that truth

  1432. and see it

  1433. come to bear

  1434. in others.

  1435. We as a church

  1436. must be

  1437. theological.

  1438. We are really

  1439. wasting our time

  1440. if we're not.

  1441. If we don't

  1442. come together

  1443. and root

  1444. through

  1445. and parse

  1446. out

  1447. and figure out

  1448. all of the

  1449. deep things

  1450. of God

  1451. that he has

  1452. to say to us

  1453. in our scriptures

  1454. why are we

  1455. getting together?

  1456. But we also

  1457. must be

  1458. missional.

  1459. This should be

  1460. a great motivation

  1461. to us getting

  1462. out and going

  1463. and sharing

  1464. and moving

  1465. and healing.

  1466. Bringing redemption

  1467. to this world

  1468. as we come to

  1469. better understand

  1470. our own redemption.

  1471. These two things

  1472. must carry

  1473. together.

  1474. If Christ Family

  1475. Church errs

  1476. in 2013

  1477. we err

  1478. to being theological.

  1479. We err

  1480. to being theological.

  1481. And that does not

  1482. mean that we should

  1483. stop being theological.

  1484. and start being

  1485. more missional.

  1486. That just means

  1487. that we should

  1488. continue to be theological.

  1489. Find better ways

  1490. to be theological.

  1491. Press deeper

  1492. into the things

  1493. of God

  1494. so that we'll

  1495. be more missional.

  1496. So that's my

  1497. challenge to you

  1498. this morning.

  1499. Which category

  1500. do you lie in?

  1501. If you don't

  1502. think that you've

  1503. ever come

  1504. to really understand

  1505. that Jesus

  1506. is the Christ

  1507. that can change

  1508. this morning.

  1509. Ask that God

  1510. would do a work

  1511. in your heart.

  1512. Respond in faith

  1513. to the gospel

  1514. call to repent

  1515. and believe.

  1516. If you find

  1517. yourself in this

  1518. category

  1519. I can guarantee

  1520. that all of us

  1521. need to work

  1522. out our faith

  1523. in a greater degree

  1524. as we drag

  1525. along the baggage

  1526. of the sickness

  1527. of sin.

  1528. We're all being

  1529. made more

  1530. perfect.

  1531. We're all being

  1532. moved in a

  1533. further Christward

  1534. direction.

  1535. I've been accused

  1536. of being an idealist

  1537. and I think that

  1538. anybody who's a Christian

  1539. who's not an idealist

  1540. is pitiful.

  1541. It's shameful.

  1542. We're supposed

  1543. to be like Christ

  1544. who is ideal.

  1545. Keep pressing

  1546. to that high goal

  1547. of being like

  1548. Him

  1549. in 2014.

  1550. Let's pray together.

  1551. Let's pray together.
