  1. Please take out your copy of God's Word and turn to the Gospel of Mark chapter 4.

    Mark 4 chapter mention

  2. As you're doing that, you've heard it said already that we had our men's retreat this weekend,

  3. and everyone's a bit tired from that. I'm feeling this as well. My soul is very awake this morning,

  4. and glad to be here. I'm trying to get my mind and my body to catch up to that. So,

  5. if at any time during the sermon I just suddenly fall asleep and fall over on the stage,

  6. what I want you to do is drag me by my feet to the back corner, put the chair rack in front so

  7. no one steps on me and just leave me alone. Wes will come up and maybe do an extra song,

  8. and we'll close the service up that way. But I'm sure by grace I'll stay standing in this process.

  9. We finally find ourselves back in Mark. We ended up taking a little bit of a three-week

  10. hiatus from it. Not really intentionally, but previously when we were in Mark we talked about

  11. what the purpose of the parables were. We looked in chapter 4 verses 10 through 12, and we saw how

  12. it was that Jesus used these parables. He laid these truths that were understood to them alongside

  13. greater truth to help them understand it in expanding degrees. And that the parables were designed,

  14. as we can see as he quotes here, from Isaiah chapter 6, there in verse 12, to both conceal and reveal

    Isaiah 6 chapter mention

  15. things about the kingdom of God, this gospel message that he was preaching.

  16. So we did that together, and now we're going to actually back up a little bit and look at verses

  17. 1 through 20. So join me reading along as I read out loud.

  18. Again he began to teach beside the sea, and a very large crowd gathered about him so that he got into

  19. a boat and sat in it on the sea, and the whole crowd was beside the sea on the land. And he was

  20. teaching them many things in parables, and in his teaching he said to them,

  21. Listen, a sower went out to sow, and as he sowed, some seed fell along the path, and the birds came and devoured it.

  22. Other seed fell on rocky ground, where it did not have much soil, and immediately it sprang up,

  23. since it had no depth of soil. And when the sun rose, it was scorched, and since it had no root,

  24. it withered away. Other seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it, and yielded no grain.

  25. And other seeds fell into good soil and produced grain, growing up and increasing and yielding

  26. thirtyfold, and sixtyfold, and a hundredfold. And he said, He who has ears to hear, let him hear.

  27. And when he was alone, those around him with the twelve asked him about the parables. And he said to

  28. them, To you has been given the secret of the kingdom of God, but for those outside everything is in

  29. parable, so that they may indeed see but not perceive, and may indeed hear but not understand,

  30. lest they should turn and be forgiven. And he said to them, Do you not understand this parable?

  31. How then will you understand all the parables? The sower sows the word, and these are the ones along

  32. the path where the word is sown. When they hear, Satan immediately comes and takes away the word that

  33. is sown in them. And these are the ones sown on rocky ground. The one who, when they hear the word,

  34. immediately receives it with joy, and they have no root in themselves, but endure for a while.

  35. Then, when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately they fall away.

  36. And others are the ones sown among the thorns. They are those who hear the word, but the cares of

  37. the world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the desires for other things, enter in and choke the

  38. word, and it proves unfruitful. But those that were sown on the good soil are the ones who hear the word,

  39. and accept it, and bear fruit, thirtyfold, and sixtyfold, and a hundredfold. Please join me in praying.

  40. Father, we praise you this morning for Christ, and we praise you for your word to us in the scriptures

  41. that speaks of the word of God who became flesh, who came and dwelt amongst us, who lived a sinless life

  42. on our behalf, bore your wrath for us who will believe in him, that we might have life and be set free

  43. from the bondage and slavery of sin. We praise you for the gospel of Mark, and the opportunity to look at

  44. the life of Christ as recorded here by Mark, who was carried along by your spirit. We accept this this

  45. morning as your word to us. It is holy, and we come to you in reverence, asking that you work change in

  46. our lives by its power, and we pray this in Christ's name. Amen. So we find Jesus again, likely close to

  47. Capernaum on the northwest side of the Sea of Galilee, and he has gone out again in more remote places, but

  48. these big crowds keep following him, and we see this kind of repeatedly throughout the story here. And so

  49. Mark pauses at this point to set a little bit of a scene for us. He gets into a boat. He goes out a ways

  50. into the water so that the crowd isn't pressing in on him so much, where he can stop performing miracles,

  51. which validated the message, and preach. He got out and he began to teach them. And the gospel of Mark,

  52. I've said to you before, is a work of rhetoric. It's a work. Mark's intention as he's writing by the

  53. power of the Spirit is to access our hearts through our minds to have us be devoted followers of Jesus

  54. Christ. And it's action-packed. He moves, and he moves very quickly through the events that are

  55. happening in Jesus' life. But he pauses on a couple of occasions to record his teaching at length,

  56. particularly chapter 4 and chapter 13. We see Jesus dropping truth along the way in the midst of

  57. these stories, but he really stops and pauses in these places, which should give us reason to stop

  58. and pause and really question how is it that this teaching, how is it that this parable in particular

  59. is incredibly important. This parable is recorded in all three of the Synoptic Gospels, along with Jesus'

  60. explanation. It's one of the few parables that we get a recorded explanation of exactly what it means.

  61. Quite fascinating to come to a text. Often I come to a text and I have to get its bearing, try to

  62. understand what it means, and then say, okay, now we know what it means. What does it mean for our

  63. people? And Jesus just does the work for me here, right? We know exactly what it means, right? He tells

  64. us. He continues his sermon. He goes right on. And so the challenge before us today is then to

  65. apply it as well into our lives. Notice verse 13. As he responds to his apostles, we kind of see two

  66. settings. By the sea, he's preaching from the water. And then later on, when he was alone, his disciples

  67. come to him and ask him this question about parables. And he says to them in verse 13, do you not

  68. understand this parable? How then will you understand all the parables? So this kind of seems to be a

  69. paradigm-shifting parable. We must understand this one if we're going to get the others right.

  70. And so it's a parable about soils. This would have been a very commonly understood parable. The general

  71. population would have got this symbolism, this agrarian symbolism. So the challenge before us is

  72. to say, okay, this is an important parable. By it, we must understand other parables. So what does it

  73. mean for us? What does it mean for us today? And I want to give you two objectives of this parable

  74. that means something for us today. Firstly, to have us question which type of soil we are.

  75. In the parable, Jesus is the sower. We find him in this stage in his ministry right now,

  76. going about sowing the Word, preaching the Gospel of the Kingdom of God. And he says to us that there

  77. are types of soil. And those are those who hear the message of God. And so we must ask ourselves,

  78. which type of soil we are. This is the greatest question we could ask. How do we find ourselves in

  79. the category that will be damned for eternity because of our sin against the most holy God?

  80. Or those who have been redeemed by the blood of Christ? You must answer that question this morning.

  81. We are commended in the Scriptures to test our faith. Do that today as you reflect upon these

  82. different types of soils? Our fruitfulness matters a great deal. We want to find ourselves as good soil.

  83. Those who have received the Word and who have bore fruit thirtyfold and sixtyfold and a hundredfold.

  84. The fruit matters. Our salvation is a great work of grace that Christ has bought on our behalf.

  85. We cannot earn our salvation in any way, but yet the fruit is the evidence of the work of God in our lives.

  86. So it matters. Matthew 3.8, Jesus says,

  87. Bear fruit in keeping with repentance, in evidence of your repentance.

  88. And later in Matthew 12, verse 33, He said that a tree is known by its fruit.

    Matthew 12:33

  89. Good trees produce good fruit. Bad trees produce bad fruit.

  90. At the end of chapter 3, we looked at kind of some beginning parable, but there's a lot of activity happening

  91. as He's likely back in Capernaum.

  92. And we see an interaction with a number of different types of people here.

  93. And He's elaborating. Mark, being led by the Spirit, is giving us this parable

  94. in following the way He's treated by His family, as He's treated as a lunatic.

  95. They come to Him, if you look back up in verse 21 of chapter 3,

  96. and when His family heard it, that He was back in town, they went out to seize Him,

  97. for they were saying, He is out of His mind.

  98. Then we see Him interacting with the scribes, who thinks that He's a liar.

  99. He's saying that He's the Son of God, and they're saying,

  100. You can't possibly be the Son of God. You are working by Satan.

  101. And then we see those that He recognizes are His mother and His brothers and His sisters,

  102. in verse 34 and 35, those who do the will of His Father.

  103. John 6.4, He says,

  104. For this is the will of My Father, that everyone who looks on the Son and believes in Him

  105. should have eternal life.

  106. So, our faith is not merely an outward activity.

  107. Thousands of people were following Him around,

  108. but they followed Him for the benefits that He could provide for them.

  109. They wanted to be healed, or they wanted to see healing happen.

  110. They wanted demons cast out, or they wanted to see that happen.

  111. It was a spectacle that was going on.

  112. And many people today, and you may find yourself in this position,

  113. that you follow Jesus for what you think He can offer you,

  114. in this world, but not for what He actually came to offer.

  115. And that was the redemption of our souls.

  116. I love you, Dad.

  117. This is why we come to Christ, for the redemption of our souls.

  118. And we receive immense blessing in Him.

  119. Immense, immeasurable blessing.

  120. But often not the way we think.

  121. You don't follow Jesus for a new car or financial success.

  122. The prosperity gospel is damning untold millions to hell.

  123. They're just air conditioning the trip there.

  124. That is not the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  125. We must ask ourselves, if we're good soil,

  126. do we have the seed of the Word in us,

  127. and is it producing fruit as evidence of that?

  128. Secondly, if we are good soil,

  129. this parable helps to prepare us for the way the world will receive the gospel of grace.

  130. If you want to complicate the parable a bit,

  131. you certainly can,

  132. to say that we're now sowers,

  133. sowing the Word.

  134. I like to think that Jesus is still the sower,

  135. and He uses us as His tools of sowing seed,

  136. right?

  137. Spreading the Word amongst the world.

  138. And not all people are going to receive the Word the way we would hope that they would.

  139. The way we think they ought to.

  140. And this is to help us to understand what that's going to look like.

  141. Because the major task of every disciple of Christ is to sow seed.

  142. This is it.

  143. You want to know God's will for your life?

  144. Believe in Him,

  145. and sow seeds so that others might believe in Him.

  146. This is the task that has been given to us.

  147. Many people call it the Great Commission.

  148. Properly, aptly called that thing.

  149. In fact, all the instruction that we receive in the Scriptures about holy living,

  150. the ways in which we ought to glorify God,

  151. is giving validation to that message.

  152. The same way that Jesus went around and healed people,

  153. and showed that He had a power from above,

  154. validated His message,

  155. is what we do as we love one another,

  156. as we live holy lives,

  157. as we put to death sin,

  158. as we pursue righteousness,

  159. all of these things validate this primary thing of sowing seed,

  160. sowing the Word in the world.

  161. This is the primary task.

  162. We are to propagate to the glory of God.

  163. Propagate to the glory of God.

  164. Sow seed so that others might bear fruit.

  165. I think it's behind me.

  166. I'm pretty sure it is.

  167. Our vision statement for our church.

  168. That we exist to glorify God

  169. by experiencing,

  170. proclaiming,

  171. and displaying the supremacy of Jesus Christ

  172. in all things to all peoples.

  173. That is our way of saying

  174. that in all of our activity,

  175. our experience,

  176. in our proclamation,

  177. and the things we do together,

  178. we are to show Jesus Christ as supreme.

  179. To show Him as He is.

  180. To sow the Word in the world,

  181. in everything we do,

  182. to the ends of the earth.

  183. I hope that you're working on memorizing

  184. this statement.

  185. It's there for you.

  186. Remember it.

  187. Remember it.

  188. The Canons of Dort,

  189. which quite interestingly,

  190. was the response to Arminianism.

  191. So,

  192. if you got a little bit uncomfortable

  193. with the song we sang beforehand,

  194. and if you get uncomfortable

  195. with this particular parable here,

  196. a group of men met together

  197. to look at the claims of Jacob Arminius,

  198. and they wrote responses to that.

  199. We often call them

  200. the doctrines of grace,

  201. but in the Canons of Dort,

  202. it said it this way.

  203. The Word should be declared

  204. and published to all nations

  205. and to all persons

  206. promiscuously

  207. and without distinction.

  208. I love that.

  209. Right?

  210. Promiscuously,

  211. the Word should be sown.

  212. Massive handfuls of seed

  213. thrown everywhere.

  214. This is our response

  215. to this great gospel of grace.

  216. I challenge you when you get home,

  217. next time you're on your computer,

  218. type into Google

  219. evangelism methods that work.

  220. Just watch the stuff that pops up.

  221. Watch the stuff that pops up in that.

  222. We have,

  223. as American Christians,

  224. I believe with the best of intention,

  225. try to come up with

  226. our own methodologies

  227. for how it is

  228. that Jesus saves souls.

  229. Right?

  230. We don't want there to be

  231. any types of soil.

  232. Right?

  233. We want to say there's one type of soil,

  234. and if we can just be convincing enough,

  235. right,

  236. if we can just get the game

  237. just right,

  238. and what we end up doing

  239. is we end up modifying

  240. the seed itself.

  241. Right?

  242. It no longer becomes

  243. the seed of the kingdom of God.

  244. It becomes some weird distortion of it

  245. that has no value

  246. that will ultimately be

  247. ripped up by its roots

  248. and thrown into the fire.

  249. Right?

  250. It doesn't produce more fruit.

  251. It's not the thing

  252. that's good for nourishment.

  253. I was thinking about this

  254. this past week,

  255. and I just started thinking

  256. about all of the

  257. genetically modified food

  258. that we eat these days,

  259. and we could go off

  260. on a big,

  261. huge tangent about that,

  262. but there's lots

  263. of genetically modified foods,

  264. and they are modified

  265. to produce better,

  266. to make more.

  267. We may never see

  268. this side of heaven,

  269. the effects that's having

  270. on our bodies,

  271. drought resistant,

  272. different things like that,

  273. but I came across

  274. a story of Monsanto,

  275. which is a bad word

  276. in some circles,

  277. an organization

  278. that had genetically

  279. modified some wheat

  280. that they found

  281. to be incredibly bad,

  282. and it was discovered

  283. just this past year

  284. on a farm in Oregon.

  285. They had withdrawn it,

  286. weren't sending it anymore,

  287. but it somehow was found

  288. that this plant was growing

  289. on this farm in Oregon,

  290. and as a result of that,

  291. our wheat export

  292. was boycotted by Japan,

  293. South Korea,

  294. and Taiwan

  295. at the tune of $8.1 billion.

  296. in revenue

  297. this past year.

  298. They recognized

  299. that this was not

  300. weak as it should be,

  301. and they rejected it.

  302. And here we find ourselves

  303. as Americans

  304. modifying the gospel,

  305. right,

  306. and then exporting it

  307. all over the world.

  308. And we're finding

  309. that there are places

  310. that are rejecting

  311. much of the gospel,

  312. the modified gospel

  313. that comes out

  314. of America.

  315. Praise God

  316. that there are countries

  317. that are now

  318. being missionaries

  319. to the states.

  320. South Koreans

  321. are a good example

  322. of that,

  323. who have said,

  324. what an evil,

  325. wicked place

  326. that needs the light

  327. of Christ.

  328. We will go there

  329. and preach the gospel

  330. to those people.

  331. Fantastic.

  332. Absolutely fantastic.

  333. You remember these people,

  334. the people that Jesus

  335. is talking to here,

  336. his disciples,

  337. had much messianic expectation.

  338. Right?

  339. They were waiting

  340. for the Christ.

  341. They didn't know

  342. that this was him

  343. in various forms

  344. quite yet,

  345. but they were waiting

  346. for him to come.

  347. They knew the messianic

  348. prophecies.

  349. They were expecting

  350. Jesus to come

  351. to be a king

  352. who would restore

  353. the Davidic dynasty

  354. and usher in a time

  355. of justice

  356. and peace.

  357. And he will,

  358. but it just didn't happen

  359. the way they thought

  360. that it would.

  361. They were oppressed

  362. by Rome.

  363. They thought he was

  364. going to come,

  365. put Rome back

  366. in its place,

  367. restore the glory

  368. of the Davidic kingdom.

  369. They were familiar

  370. with Isaiah 9, 6, and 7.

  371. For to us a child is born,

  372. to us a son is given,

  373. and the government

  374. shall be upon his shoulders,

  375. and his name shall be called

  376. Wonderful Counselor,

  377. Mighty God,

  378. Everlasting Father,

  379. Prince of Peace.

  380. Of the increase

  381. of his government

  382. and of peace

  383. there will be no end

  384. on the throne of David

  385. and over his kingdom

  386. to establish it

  387. and to uphold it

  388. with justice

  389. and with righteousness

  390. from this time forth

  391. and forevermore.

  392. The zeal of the Lord of hosts,

  393. will do this.

  394. Jesus Christ has,

  395. in fact,

  396. restored the

  397. Davidic dynasty.

  398. He was in the lineage

  399. of David

  400. and he has come

  401. and he's reigned.

  402. He's seated now

  403. at the right hand of the Father

  404. and he reigns in our hearts.

  405. The kingdom of God

  406. looked much different

  407. than they thought it would.

  408. And here he is

  409. setting up

  410. a paradigm-shifting parable

  411. to understand

  412. what this would look like.

  413. You see why this is

  414. really important

  415. for us to get

  416. as followers of Christ.

  417. As evidence of this,

  418. in Luke chapter 12,

    Luke 12:23

  419. verse 23,

  420. his record ends.

  421. Someone who was following

  422. said to him,

  423. Lord,

  424. will those who are saved

  425. be few?

  426. Will those who are saved

  427. be few?

  428. Here's the parable

  429. that helps us

  430. to understand

  431. what's going on

  432. and happening

  433. in this world.

  434. I said to you before

  435. this agricultural symbolism

  436. may be a little bit

  437. lost on us,

  438. but they totally understood it.

  439. This was an agrarian society.

  440. And they got this parable

  441. both physically and mentally.

  442. And let me explain

  443. what I mean by that.

  444. Physically,

  445. they got the picture.

  446. They understood

  447. what he was talking about

  448. as he talked about

  449. this field

  450. and what it meant

  451. to sow seed.

  452. We talked previously

  453. at the end of chapter 2

  454. when the disciples

  455. and Jesus

  456. are chastised

  457. for picking the heads

  458. of wheat

  459. and walking

  460. and eating.

  461. And I told you

  462. that there were paths

  463. that kind of crisscrossed

  464. around the edges

  465. of these fields.

  466. And this is where

  467. people traveled.

  468. They have highways

  469. that they were traveling on.

  470. They would walk

  471. these beaten paths

  472. between the fields.

  473. And it was permissible

  474. by law

  475. that you could gather

  476. as you were walking along.

  477. So the person

  478. sojourning through

  479. the country

  480. could gather and eat

  481. as they went along.

  482. And this is what

  483. they were attacked for

  484. was doing that

  485. on the Sabbath.

  486. So these fields

  487. were set up

  488. in some form of a grid

  489. and had these hard

  490. paths around it.

  491. And the fields

  492. would be tilled.

  493. Much the same way

  494. we do now,

  495. but we do it

  496. with big machinery.

  497. They would till

  498. the fields up

  499. so you would have

  500. had a nice big blank

  501. plot of land

  502. with the soil

  503. turned up

  504. ready to go

  505. and they would

  506. sow seed

  507. in a bag.

  508. They would put it

  509. in a bag,

  510. carry it over their

  511. shoulder,

  512. and they would

  513. cast the seed

  514. like this.

  515. Any of you

  516. have ever done that?

  517. I've seeded a lawn

  518. that way,

  519. hand seeding a lawn.

  520. And you threw it

  521. out there.

  522. And you can't,

  523. you can kind of

  524. control where it goes,

  525. but if you want

  526. it to get to the edges,

  527. you've definitely

  528. got to do some

  529. overlapping.

  530. It's got to play out

  531. a little bit

  532. beyond that.

  533. They would have

  534. totally understood.

  535. The picture of this

  536. would have been

  537. in their heads.

  538. They possibly could

  539. have looked at

  540. somebody doing it.

  541. Jesus may have.

  542. Jesus may have

  543. seen somebody doing it

  544. and said,

  545. I've got one for them.

  546. The sign of a natural

  547. teacher is that

  548. they've always got

  549. some beautiful analogy

  550. to speak about

  551. something of a

  552. greater truth.

  553. These people also

  554. would have known

  555. of the promises

  556. of God,

  557. which were very

  558. agrarian in their

  559. symbolism,

  560. of Psalm 126,

  561. Jeremiah chapter 31,

    Jeremiah 31 chapter mention

  562. Hosea chapter 2.

    Hosea 2 chapter mention

  563. Spend some time

  564. looking at those.

  565. They also would have

  566. known of some

  567. of the symbolism

  568. of the judgment

  569. of God using

  570. these kind of

  571. agrarian symbols.

  572. Isaiah chapter 34

    Isaiah 34 chapter mention

  573. is an example of that.

  574. So it was a very

  575. timely way for him

  576. to speak to these

  577. people.

  578. Note that there

  579. are six soils.

  580. Don't spend a ton

  581. of time racking

  582. your brain about six.

  583. I think you counted

  584. four already.

  585. Don't spend a bunch

  586. of time thinking

  587. about that.

  588. I'll get you to

  589. that point here

  590. readily.

  591. But let's talk

  592. one by one

  593. about these

  594. different soils.

  595. Firstly,

  596. we see the soil

  597. that is along

  598. the path.

  599. The soil that's

  600. at the edge

  601. of the path.

  602. The part that

  603. would have been

  604. beaten down.

  605. The person that

  606. didn't walk down

  607. the middle of the

  608. path but walked

  609. a little off to

  610. the edge of the

  611. path would have

  612. beat the ground

  613. down quite well.

  614. We see that in

  615. verse 4 and then

  616. the explanation of

  617. it in verse 15.

  618. This would have

  619. been hard.

  620. Hard packed.

  621. Hard as a rock.

  622. This area of the

  623. world is very dry

  624. for most of the

  625. year.

  626. Nothing's saturating.

  627. Our paths would

  628. have been mud

  629. here in Georgia.

  630. But in this place

  631. it would have been

  632. hard as a rock.

  633. As if it was

  634. paved.

  635. And so we see

  636. verse 4 that he

  637. sows it and some

  638. of it falls onto

  639. the path.

  640. And immediately

  641. the birds follow

  642. the sower along

  643. and they snatch

  644. it up.

  645. It's food for

  646. them and they

  647. eat it.

  648. In verse 15

  649. we see that this

  650. is Satan.

  651. Comes and takes

  652. the word away

  653. that they might

  654. not believe.

  655. In the same

  656. account in Luke

    Luke 8 chapter mention

  657. chapter 8

  658. I like the

  659. language here

  660. in verse 15

  661. of chapter 4

  662. it says

  663. and takes away

  664. the word that

  665. is sown in

  666. them.

  667. In Luke

    Luke 8 chapter mention

  668. chapter 8

  669. it says

  670. the ones along

  671. the path of

  672. those who

  673. have heard

  674. then the devil

  675. comes and

  676. takes away

  677. the word

  678. from their

  679. hearts

  680. so that it

  681. may not

  682. believe

  683. and be

  684. saved.

  685. One thing

  686. for us

  687. just to hear

  688. the word

  689. in our

  690. heads

  691. but the

  692. word must

  693. come down

  694. and penetrate

  695. into our

  696. hearts.

  697. It must

  698. plant itself

  699. in us

  700. and for

  701. these people

  702. this word

  703. is snatched

  704. away

  705. before they

  706. can believe.

  707. Secondly

  708. we see

  709. the rocky

  710. ground

  711. in verses

  712. 5 and

  713. 6

  714. and then

  715. the

  716. explanation

  717. in verses

  718. 16 and

  719. 17.

  720. It falls

  721. on the rocky

  722. ground

  723. where it

  724. didn't have

  725. much soil

  726. and immediately

  727. sprang up

  728. since it

  729. had no

  730. depth of

  731. soil.

  732. And when

  733. the sun

  734. rose it

  735. was scorched

  736. and since

  737. it had

  738. no root

  739. it withered

  740. away.

  741. Now the

  742. picture here

  743. is not

  744. that there's

  745. rocks on

  746. the surface

  747. or that

  748. there's

  749. chunks of

  750. rock in

  751. the soil.

  752. They would

  753. have fixed

  754. that.

  755. They wouldn't

  756. have let

  757. that remain

  758. in their

  759. field but

  760. that there

  761. was rock

  762. underneath

  763. the soil.

  764. That they

  765. had tilled

  766. it.

  767. It looked

  768. good and

  769. fine on

  770. the surface

  771. so the

  772. seed was

  773. sown there.

  774. But there's

  775. rock down

  776. below that

  777. prevented those

  778. roots from

  779. going down

  780. deep.

  781. And again

  782. in this area

  783. it's very

  784. arid and

  785. roots had to

  786. go down.

  787. They had to

  788. get down

  789. deep into

  790. where the

  791. water table

  792. would be

  793. when the

  794. water was

  795. before they

  796. could start

  797. putting up

  798. height.

  799. If you don't

  800. know much

  801. about plants

  802. that's the

  803. first thing

  804. that plants

  805. do.

  806. When you put a

  807. seed in the

  808. ground it

  809. sends out

  810. roots first

  811. that it

  812. might have

  813. nourishment.

  814. Then it

  815. begins putting

  816. energy into

  817. setting up

  818. the stalk

  819. and setting

  820. it up

  821. above the

  822. ground.

  823. So in this

  824. case they

  825. would have

  826. looked out

  827. across the

  828. field and

  829. they would

  830. have had

  831. all their

  832. little plants

  833. and wheat

  834. maybe in

  835. this case

  836. coming up.

  837. But these

  838. plants would

  839. have come

  840. up higher

  841. and they

  842. would have

  843. known.

  844. Planted that

  845. one on

  846. rock.

  847. Because they

  848. would have

  849. jumped up.

  850. They would

  851. have sprung

  852. up even

  853. higher because

  854. the plant

  855. not able to

  856. !

  857. Put roots

  858. down any

  859. deeper.

  860. would have

  861. been putting

  862. all its

  863. energy into

  864. shooting a

  865. stalk up

  866. high.

  867. And those

  868. things would

  869. have certainly

  870. been pulled

  871. out and

  872. burned.

  873. It would

  874. have been

  875. pointless.

  876. It would

  877. have never

  878. produced any

  879. fruit whatsoever.

  880. Just vegetable

  881. matter at that

  882. point.

  883. So this would

  884. have been rock

  885. up underneath

  886. the soil.

  887. And you can

  888. see in the

  889. explanation that

  890. Jesus gives

  891. us.

  892. They hear the

  893. word and they

  894. immediately receive

  895. it with joy.

  896. It springs up

  897. in them.

  898. Praise God for

  899. the growth in

  900. this person's

  901. life.

  902. Some of you

  903. may know

  904. these type of

  905. people.

  906. I know quite

  907. a few.

  908. You rejoice in

  909. this transformative

  910. work.

  911. It seems like

  912. God has done a

  913. great mighty

  914. work in them.

  915. But then,

  916. because they

  917. have no root,

  918. they endure for

  919. a while.

  920. And when

  921. tribulation or

  922. persecution arises

  923. because of their

  924. faith, everything

  925. doesn't go hunky

  926. dory, everything

  927. isn't great the

  928. way they think it's

  929. going to be, they

  930. fall away.

  931. They're scorched

  932. by the sun and

  933. they fall away.

  934. I would say to

  935. those of you,

  936. especially those

  937. of you who are

  938. young and on

  939. college campuses

  940. and seeing people

  941. come to repentance

  942. and faith, push

  943. new believers out

  944. into the sun.

  945. We tend to coddle

  946. new believers a

  947. lot.

  948. And we must

  949. disciple people.

  950. We must build

  951. foundation of truth

  952. in them.

  953. We must help

  954. them be able to

  955. stand firm.

  956. But the truly

  957. regenerate soul

  958. does not reject

  959. the gospel when

  960. tribulation comes

  961. as a result of

  962. the gospel.

  963. So push them.

  964. Kick them out

  965. into the sun.

  966. Push them out

  967. there and see

  968. what happens.

  969. Press them into

  970. sharing their

  971. faith.

  972. Press them into

  973. speaking freely

  974. about the work of

  975. God in their

  976. life and see

  977. what happens.

  978. They may get a

  979. little bit knocked

  980. down.

  981. You want to be

  982. there to help

  983. them in those

  984. times.

  985. But we'll see

  986. very quickly

  987. whether or not

  988. they're truly

  989. regenerate.

  990. Those of us

  991. who are found

  992. in Christ

  993. welcome

  994. tribulation.

  995. Rejoice in

  996. tribulation.

  997. It gives

  998. evidence of

  999. our faith.

  1000. The writer of

  1001. Hebrews in

  1002. chapter 12.

  1003. Actually, please

  1004. turn to Hebrews

    Hebrews 12 chapter mention

  1005. chapter 12 with

  1006. me.

  1007. This is enough

  1008. text for you to

  1009. look at it with

  1010. me.

  1011. This is good if

  1012. you've been

  1013. feeling

  1014. disciplined by

  1015. the Lord.

  1016. If you've

  1017. been experiencing

  1018. tribulation of

  1019. any kind.

  1020. Hebrews chapter

    Hebrews 12 chapter mention

  1021. 12 beginning in

  1022. verse 5.

  1023. And have you

  1024. forgotten the

  1025. exhortation that

  1026. addresses you as

  1027. sons?

  1028. My son, do not

  1029. regard lightly the

  1030. discipline of the

  1031. Lord, nor be

  1032. weary when

  1033. reproved by him.

  1034. For the Lord

  1035. disciplines the

  1036. one he loves,

  1037. and chastises

  1038. every son whom

  1039. he receives.

  1040. Now you might

  1041. be saying, but

  1042. wait, tribulation

  1043. is not of God.

  1044. Sure, it's

  1045. permitted by him.

  1046. You are

  1047. chastised.

  1048. You are

  1049. reproved by the

  1050. actions of others

  1051. because everything

  1052. is held in God's

  1053. sovereign hand.

  1054. Verse 7.

  1055. It is for

  1056. discipline that you

  1057. have to endure.

  1058. God is treating

  1059. you as sons.

  1060. For what son is

  1061. there whom his

  1062. father does not

  1063. discipline?

  1064. Now this is a

  1065. general truth.

  1066. Some of us may

  1067. have had fathers

  1068. that did not

  1069. discipline us.

  1070. But because I

  1071. love my sons, I

  1072. discipline them.

  1073. Because I want

  1074. what is good for

  1075. them.

  1076. I want what is

  1077. right for them.

  1078. I teach that because

  1079. they do not know

  1080. it on their own.

  1081. Leave our little

  1082. kids alone, they

  1083. become absolutely

  1084. wretched.

  1085. Absolutely.

  1086. I discipline my

  1087. sons because I

  1088. love them.

  1089. Verse 8.

  1090. If you are left

  1091. without discipline in

  1092. which all have

  1093. participated, then

  1094. you are illegitimate

  1095. children and not

  1096. sons.

  1097. God leaves you

  1098. alone and doesn't

  1099. discipline you, then

  1100. you are not sons.

  1101. Besides this, we

  1102. have had earthly

  1103. fathers who

  1104. disciplined us and

  1105. we respected them.

  1106. Shall we not much

  1107. more be subject to

  1108. the father of

  1109. spirits and live?

  1110. For they disciplined

1111. us for a short time

1112. as it seemed best to

  1113. them, but he

  1114. disciplines us for

  1115. our good that we

  1116. may share his

  1117. holiness.

  1118. Speaking of my

  1119. son.

  1120. For the moment,

  1121. all discipline seems

  1122. painful rather than

  1123. pleasant, but later it

  1124. yields the peaceful

  1125. fruit of righteousness

  1126. to those who have

  1127. been trained by it.

  1128. This is good.

  1129. The son of

  1130. tribulation, if our

  1131. roots are down deep,

1132. if we're good soil and

  1133. our roots are firmly

  1134. planted and we're

  1135. drinking deep from the

1136. goodness of God in our

  1137. lives, the son of

  1138. tribulation causes

  1139. growth.

  1140. That's how plants work.

  1141. They send up the

  1142. shoot because they

  1143. need the sun to

  1144. continue that process

  1145. of photosynthesis

  1146. and all the things

  1147. that go along with

  1148. that.

  1149. We won't get into a

  1150. science lesson at

  1151. that point.

1152. But the sun is then

  1153. good for us.

  1154. And so that's the

  1155. rocky ground.

  1156. Those who appear,

  1157. they appear to be

  1158. regenerate.

  1159. They appear to make

  1160. genuine confessions of

  1161. faith.

  1162. I have been duped.

  1163. I don't think it was

  1164. any fault of mine,

  1165. but people that I

  1166. really thought were

  1167. regenerate and ended

1168. up not being at all.

  1169. We've had members of

  1170. our church were that

  1171. way.

  1172. Fooled us.

  1173. I mean, there's just

1174. no way we thought that

  1175. they weren't not

  1176. Christians.

  1177. Christians, right?

  1178. Allowed them into our

  1179. fellowship and later had

1180. to ask them to leave

  1181. our fellowship because

  1182. they were evidently not.

  1183. By their own admission

  1184. were not.

  1185. They say to them,

  1186. it doesn't make sense

1187. for you to be a member

  1188. of a believing church

  1189. if you're not a

  1190. Christian.

  1191. They say, I agree.

1192. We loved them in parted

  1193. ways in that.

  1194. We take sin seriously

  1195. here.

1196. So this is the rocky

  1197. ground.

  1198. Thirdly, there was seed

  1199. that fell among thorns.

  1200. Now get here.

  1201. Again, the picture is

  1202. no farmer in his

  1203. right mind is going

  1204. to sow seed amongst

  1205. thorns and let thorns

  1206. naturally grow.

  1207. I shouldn't say

  1208. naturally.

  1209. Let them just propagate

  1210. in his field.

1211. He's going to pull them

  1212. up.

  1213. In that tilling process,

1214. he's going to pull them

  1215. up.

1216. So here you find seed

1217. that's going to land on

  1218. ground that has thorn

  1219. seed in it.

  1220. It's been blown from a

  1221. neighboring field.

  1222. It's come out of a

  1223. ditch somewhere.

  1224. We all experience that

  1225. in the southeast.

  1226. Weeds are everywhere

  1227. where we are.

  1228. And those plants, in

  1229. competition for sun,

  1230. sinned up quickly.

1231. I mean, boy, do they

  1232. ever sinned up quickly.

  1233. They sinned up their

  1234. greenery.

  1235. They produce seed like

1236. crazy so that they can

1237. go and go and go and

  1238. go and go.

1239. If you've ever tried to

1240. have a garden in the

  1241. southeast, you know what

  1242. this looks like.

  1243. It comes up before.

1244. You've got to get out

  1245. there and start weeding

  1246. before your good plants

1247. come up to make sure

  1248. they don't get shaded

  1249. out.

1250. So here we find in

  1251. verse 7, seed falling

  1252. among thorns.

1253. And the thorns grew up

  1254. and choked it.

1255. And it yielded no grain.

1256. They grew up and they

  1257. shielded out the sun.

  1258. Right?

1259. And they sucked up all

  1260. the nutrients from the

  1261. ground.

  1262. Jesus' explanation says

1263. that they are those who

1264. hear the word, but the

1265. cares of the world and

  1266. the deceitfulness of

  1267. riches and the desire

  1268. for other things enter

1269. in and choke the word

  1270. and it proves unfruitful.

1271. I really fear this type of

1272. soil is prevalent in our

  1273. churches.

1274. That people hear the word,

1275. make some sense to them,

1276. seems to have some effect

1277. in their hearts, but all of

1278. the cares of the world,

  1279. this deceitfulness of

  1280. riches, the desire for

1281. things, comes in and chokes

  1282. it out.

1283. Beloved, being a disciple of

1284. Christ comes at a cost.

1285. It comes at a cost.

1286. We've been given free grace,

1287. but pursuing Him, being a

1288. disciple, comes at a cost.

1289. We must give things up.

1290. You cannot love and serve the

1291. world and love and serve God.

  1292. Right?

1293. They're at odds with one

  1294. another.

1295. That isn't to say that we

  1296. have to be monastic.

1297. That isn't to say that we

1298. have to take vows of

  1299. poverty.

1300. But you need to really check

1301. how much do I love the

  1302. world.

1303. So often, even for those of

1304. us who are good soil, who

  1305. are regenerate, who have

1306. faith in Christ, so often

1307. our love for Christ gets

1308. trumped by our love for

  1309. this world.

  1310. We are absolutely inundated

  1311. at every turn by

  1312. materialism where we live.

  1313. Right?

1314. I hate going down to the

1315. Mall of Georgia area because

1316. every time I go down there,

1317. I'm usually driving one of

  1318. the crummiest vehicles down

  1319. there, and everyone's clothes

1320. are more expensive than mine,

  1321. and there are billboards

1322. everywhere, and every store is

1323. new and flashy and nice, and

1324. I can feel this pressure.

1325. It kind of presses down on me

  1326. to want more.

  1327. Right?

1328. I'm glad I live up here where

  1329. people drive crummy vehicles,

1330. and I'm just thankful that my

1331. truck is running as you see them

1332. broken down on the side of the

1333. road, and I'm like, praise God

  1334. I'm getting from point A to

  1335. point B.

1336. This is all around us.

1337. Ask that God would test your

  1338. heart in this regard.

  1339. Are you good soil?

  1340. Right?

1341. Are you good soil that's just

1342. been distracted by the world?

1343. Or are you this seed thrown

  1344. among the thorns?

1345. Seed sown among the thorns?

1346. Say that five times fast.

  1347. Right?

  1348. 1 John 2.19

  1349. John says,

1350. They went out from us, but they

  1351. were not of us.

1352. For if they had been of us, they

1353. would have continued with us.

1354. But they went out, that it might

1355. become plain, that they are all

  1356. not of us.

1357. If we're going to be a community

  1358. of faith, right, disciple-making

1359. disciples of Jesus Christ, we are

1360. going to look different from this

  1361. world.

1362. Not that we're going to wear special

  1363. outfits to look different.

1364. But all of our activity, our

  1365. experience, our proclaiming,

1366. displaying, is going to look

  1367. different from this world.

1368. And people who come here and

1369. want to sit amongst us are

1370. going to have a couple of

  1371. emotions.

1372. They're going to stay, feel

  1373. incredibly uncomfortable.

1374. These people are so different

  1375. than I am.

1376. Look at the way they press.

1377. Look at the way they give

  1378. freely.

1379. Look at the way they don't love

1380. the things of this world.

  1381. And I do.

1382. They're going to pull in the

1383. parking lot in their car and

1384. go, my car is a lot different

1385. than all these other cars in

  1386. this parking lot.

1387. They're going to walk in here

1388. dressed a particular way and

1389. say, I am dressed very strangely

  1390. compared to these people.

1391. They're going to be here and

1392. they're going to be uncomfortable.

  1393. That is an option.

  1394. Secondly, they could change.

1395. They could pursue Christ with

  1396. us in a community.

1397. We could press them towards that

  1398. type of thing.

  1399. Or they could leave.

1400. And I'm not suggesting that

1401. everyone who leaves our church

1402. is a seat among thorns.

1403. I'm not saying that at all.

1404. But speaking of this particular

1405. issue of loving the things of

1406. this world over Christ, those are

  1407. the options for them.

1408. We ought to be that kind of

  1409. people.

1410. This shouldn't be the kind of

1411. group where you can come in and

  1412. meld.

1413. People who love the things of

  1414. this world shouldn't be

  1415. comfortable here.

1416. It should be the case.

  1417. Right?

1418. People should walk in and be

1419. amongst us and spend time with

1420. us, hear what's on our hearts,

1421. and they should go, these people

1422. love Jesus more than anything.

1423. There is no doubt in my mind of

  1424. that fact.

1425. And we pray that that causes

  1426. change in everybody's life.

1427. Which brings us to our last three

  1428. soils.

  1429. Good soil.

1430. We see good soil that yields

  1431. thirtyfold and sixtyfold and

  1432. a hundredfold.

  1433. There's your three different

  1434. types of soil.

  1435. And I have to say that I'm a

1436. little bit encouraged by this

1437. just as sometimes in my

1438. Christian walk I want to see

  1439. more things happen.

1440. I want more fruit to happen.

1441. But to see that God has

  1442. particularly gifted people in

  1443. different ways and that I don't

1444. need to be Billy Graham.

1445. I would like to be.

1446. I would like to be that

  1447. effective for the kingdom.

1448. God wants to use me in that

  1449. way.

1450. I am willing to do that.

1451. But I don't have to be Billy

  1452. Graham.

  1453. There's not a pressure to that.

1454. Like the measure of my faith is

1455. not that I am Billy Graham.

1456. That I accomplish what he has

  1457. accomplished by God's grace.

1458. But that I could just be one

  1459. that yields thirtyfold.

  1460. Now understand that this

  1461. terminology for them,

  1462. thirtyfold and sixtyfold and

  1463. hundredfold would have been

  1464. astronomical crop yield.

1465. Not like normal crop yield.

1466. I tried to read up on this.

  1467. I really didn't understand

1468. what I was reading when I was

1469. trying to figure out the

1470. percentages that it would be.

1471. But essentially this would be

1472. a yield of like three thousand,

1473. six thousand and ten thousand

  1474. percent.

  1475. What they're measuring I'm not

  1476. sure.

1477. Probably weight of crop versus

  1478. weight of yield.

1479. But just get this was huge.

  1480. Right.

1481. The gradient of society would

  1482. have gone thirtyfold, sixtyfold

  1483. and a hundredfold.

  1484. Are you crazy?

1485. But this is the kind of fruit

  1486. that Christians yield.

1487. That we sow the seed.

1488. We put the seed out in the world.

1489. God does this work that causes

  1490. this propagation to happen.

1491. The growth of God's church.

  1492. Right.

1493. That his people amass and amass

  1494. and amass and amass.

1495. And sometimes I get a little bit

  1496. discouraged as an American

1497. Christian running in the circles

  1498. that I run in.

1499. That we don't see massive

  1500. regeneration.

  1501. We've been praying as a church

1502. for quite some time for revival.

1503. We want to see a big movement

  1504. of people towards God.

1505. And that's a good thing to desire

1506. and we should continue to press

  1507. into that.

1508. And sometimes I feel a little bit

1509. discouraged as if God's not

1510. moving and working in the world.

1511. But you only have to open your

1512. eyes a little bit and read some

1513. of the accounts of some of the

  1514. things that are happening

  1515. around the world.

1516. The last time I kind of checked

1517. in on what was going on in China

  1518. it's reported that about

  1519. 10,000 people a day are coming

1520. to faith in Christ in China.

1521. 10,000 people a day God is at work.

  1522. Right.

1523. Seed is being sown and it is

  1524. meeting good soil.

  1525. Right.

1526. It is growing up and it is

  1527. producing more.

  1528. And hear this.

1529. The way that God came into this

1530. world that brought the kingdom.

1531. He brought it through His Son

1532. Jesus Christ who picked a little

  1533. band of brothers.

  1534. Right.

  1535. Inadequate for the task.

  1536. Totally uneducated.

  1537. Just normal guys.

  1538. Right.

1539. And He left them with the task

1540. of being disciple making disciples

1541. and from this little place

  1542. in the Middle East

1543. the fire of the kingdom of God

1544. has spread rampantly across the world

  1545. because these people got

1546. that the task of propagating the truth

1547. of sowing seed was theirs.

1548. What is happening to us in America?

1549. Have we forgotten that that is

1550. what we're supposed to be about?

  1551. Right.

1552. Not merely about learning things

1553. knowing who our God is

1554. but knowing who our God is

1555. so that other people can know

  1556. who our God is

1557. so that we can sing His praises

  1558. more accurately

  1559. and more loudly

1560. for the world to hear.

1561. I want a big bag of seed.

  1562. That's why I should be studying

  1563. the Word of God.

  1564. Right.

1565. I want to spread it everywhere.

1566. I want to feel speaking to people's lives

  1567. at every turn

  1568. and at every occasion.

1569. So we see this good seed

  1570. and I hope

  1571. genuinely

1572. immense desire in my heart

1573. that everyone in this room

  1574. can say

  1575. I'm good soil.

  1576. I'm good soil.

1577. I may be distracted often.

  1578. I may not live

1579. and be devoted to Christ

1580. the way I should be today

  1581. but I'm good soil

1582. and I can say that with confidence.

  1583. I know for a fact

1584. that the seed of the Word

1585. is taking root in my heart

1586. and it's working on me

  1587. and it's changing me.

1588. I feel conviction for sin.

1589. I desire to be more holy.

1590. I want to give my life

  1591. for the kingdom.

  1592. I hope that's true

  1593. of you.

  1594. 2 Corinthians chapter 2

    2 Corinthians 2:14

  1595. verse 14 and 17

  1596. Turn there with me

  1597. if you will please.

  1598. Now I don't try

  1599. to like to play

  1600. with symbolism too much

  1601. in the scriptures.

1602. So often we try to draw

  1603. these neat little connections

  1604. between various parables

  1605. or various analogies

1606. that Paul gives to us

  1607. and they're not really

1608. always meant to be done.

1609. So I just want you

  1610. to hear that clearly.

  1611. Don't draw connections

  1612. between my analogies

  1613. because analogies

1614. fall short at every point.

  1615. There's always something

1616. that kind of doesn't quite.

  1617. A lesser truth

  1618. meant to expose

  1619. a larger truth

  1620. just doesn't quite

1621. get there all the time.

  1622. But in 2 Corinthians chapter 2

    2 Corinthians 2:14–17

  1623. verses 14 through 17

  1624. Paul says

1625. But thanks be to God

  1626. who in Christ Jesus

  1627. always leads us

  1628. in triumphal procession

  1629. there's a great victory

  1630. in that

  1631. and through us

  1632. spreads the fragrance

1633. of the knowledge of Him

  1634. everywhere.

  1635. I love that language.

  1636. Spreads the fragrance

  1637. of the knowledge

  1638. of Him everywhere.

1639. And as I was reading that

1640. these last couple of weeks

1641. the idea in my mind

  1642. is that

  1643. we're talking probably

  1644. about wheat

  1645. in this parable here

  1646. but that as fruit

  1647. the way that fruit

  1648. gets on the ground

1649. and then like an apple tree

  1650. for example

1651. as it falls to the ground

  1652. and it rots

  1653. and apple trees

  1654. smell amazing

  1655. when they're doing that

  1656. for a while

  1657. they can stink

  1658. after that rot

  1659. goes too far

  1660. so there's the analogy

  1661. falling short

  1662. so you walk by

  1663. an apple tree

  1664. that's got apples

  1665. on the ground

  1666. that are rotting

  1667. and it just smells

  1668. wonderful

  1669. because those fruits

  1670. have gotten riper

  1671. and riper

  1672. they've got all that

  1673. good sugar in them

  1674. which is there

  1675. to nourish the seed

  1676. in its beginning stage

1677. it starts to break down

  1678. so that seed

1679. can get in the ground

  1680. and make a new

  1681. apple tree

  1682. and so there's my

  1683. mixing of analogies

  1684. for you today

  1685. verse 15

  1686. for we the aroma

  1687. of Christ

  1688. to God

  1689. among those

  1690. who are being saved

  1691. and among those

  1692. who are perishing

  1693. to one a fragrance

  1694. from death to death

  1695. to the other fragrance

  1696. from life to life

  1697. who is sufficient

  1698. for these things

  1699. we've been given

  1700. the task

  1701. of propagating

  1702. of sowing seed

  1703. who is sufficient

  1704. for these things

  1705. for we are not

  1706. like so many

  1707. peddlers

  1708. of God's word

1709. but as men of sincerity

  1710. as commissioned

  1711. by God

1712. in the sight of God

  1713. we speak

  1714. in Christ

  1715. right

  1716. we are sufficient

  1717. for these things

  1718. because we are

  1719. in Christ

  1720. we're sufficient

  1721. for them

  1722. because Christ

  1723. is sufficient

  1724. Christ is more

  1725. than sufficient

  1726. for these things

  1727. Christ is

  1728. the great

  1729. sower

  1730. now as you think

  1731. about all of this

  1732. I mentioned before

  1733. sometimes I get depressed

  1734. being an American Christian

1735. oh I want to see

  1736. good soil

  1737. springing up

  1738. and fruit

  1739. being produced

  1740. and we see

  1741. these different

  1742. types of soils

  1743. just to give you

  1744. some comfort

  1745. in thinking

  1746. well it seems

  1747. hopeless

  1748. it seems hard

  1749. you shouldn't be

  1750. hearing it that way

  1751. you should be hearing

1752. that there is good soil

  1753. right

  1754. and that the sower

  1755. puts the seed

  1756. in the good soil

  1757. and that it does

  1758. in fact produce

  1759. fruit

  1760. but let's listen

  1761. to some other promises

  1762. that the sower

  1763. will yield

  1764. his harvest

  1765. turn with me

1766. to the book of Hosea

  1767. Old Testament book

  1768. of Hosea

  1769. just after Daniel

  1770. if that helps you

  1771. if you're flipping

  1772. back and forth

  1773. Hosea is referred to

  1774. as a minor prophet

  1775. which doesn't mean

  1776. he's less important

1777. but just that the book

  1778. is shorter

  1779. major and minor prophets

1780. this is a minor prophet

  1781. my favorite

  1782. of the minor prophets

  1783. really really love

  1784. the book of Hosea

  1785. Hosea is commanded

  1786. by God

  1787. to go and take

  1788. a wife

  1789. who's a harlot

  1790. she's said

  1791. she will cheat

  1792. on you

  1793. she will not be

  1794. faithful to you

  1795. and it's meant

  1796. to be this picture

  1797. this great display

  1798. of the way that

  1799. Israel betrayed

  1800. God

  1801. the way that Israel

  1802. was unfaithful

  1803. to God

  1804. and they have

  1805. three children

  1806. that are recorded here

  1807. it's presumed

  1808. the way the account

  1809. speaks of it

  1810. in chapter 1

  1811. you'll notice

  1812. in verse 4

  1813. they have a son

  1814. together

  1815. God tells Hosea

  1816. to name him

  1817. Jezreel

  1818. which means

  1819. to scatter

  1820. then it would appear

  1821. she has a daughter

  1822. not likely with him

  1823. but it's also

  1824. Hosea's daughter

1825. because he is a good

  1826. husband and father

  1827. in that way

  1828. and God tells him

  1829. to name her

  1830. Lo-Ruhamah

  1831. which means

  1832. no mercy

  1833. your translation

  1834. probably says

  1835. no mercy

  1836. then again

  1837. likely she has

  1838. a son

  1839. not with him

  1840. because he's

  1841. a good husband

  1842. and father

  1843. calls him his own

  1844. and God tells him

  1845. to name him

  1846. Lo-Ami

  1847. which means

  1848. not my people

  1849. or those for

  1850. kid names for you

  1851. to scatter

  1852. no mercy

  1853. and not

  1854. my people

  1855. but then turn

  1856. to Hosea chapter 2

    Hosea 2 chapter mention

  1857. we see in this

  1858. great pageant

  1859. played out

  1860. God

  1861. calling Israel

  1862. back to himself

  1863. in the same way

  1864. as we

  1865. get further on

  1866. in Hosea chapter 2

    Hosea 2 chapter mention

  1867. and then into

  1868. chapter 3

  1869. Hosea goes

  1870. and calls Gomer

  1871. back to himself

  1872. it's such a beautiful picture

1873. but listen to what God says

  1874. beginning in verse 21

  1875. and in that day

  1876. I will answer

  1877. declares the Lord

1878. I will answer the heavens

  1879. and they shall answer

  1880. the earth

  1881. and the earth

  1882. shall answer the grain

  1883. the wine

  1884. and the oil

  1885. and they shall answer

  1886. Jezreel

  1887. now remember

  1888. first son

  1889. is named Jezreel

  1890. which means to scatter

  1891. but it also meant

  1892. to plant

1893. what do you do to plant

  1894. seed

  1895. you scatter it

  1896. right

  1897. so it had both

  1898. a negative meaning

1899. as well as a positive

1900. and he's putting the positive

  1901. application here

1902. at the end of verse 22

  1903. they shall answer

  1904. Jezreel

  1905. we are planted

  1906. verse 23

1907. and I will sow her

  1908. for myself

  1909. in the land

  1910. and I will have

  1911. mercy

  1912. or ruhamah

  1913. on no mercy

  1914. and I will say

  1915. to not my people

  1916. you are my people

  1917. or ami

  1918. and he shall say

  1919. you are my God

  1920. isn't that a beautiful picture

  1921. of him sowing

  1922. and establishing

  1923. his people

  1924. in his land

  1925. after Jesus teaches

  1926. about the drinking

  1927. of his blood

1928. and the eating of his flesh

  1929. in John chapter 6

    John 6:65

  1930. verse 65

  1931. he says

1932. this is why I told you

1933. that no one can come to me

  1934. unless it is granted

  1935. him by the father

1936. this is a great example

  1937. of this

  1938. right

  1939. after this

  1940. many of the disciples

  1941. turned back

  1942. and no longer

  1943. walked with him

  1944. he explained to them

  1945. that what it meant

  1946. to abide with him

  1947. what it meant

  1948. to be in Christ

  1949. and it was hard

1950. for them to understand it

  1951. it's hard for them

  1952. to understand it

  1953. and he says

1954. this is why I told you

1955. that no one can come to me

1956. unless the father is granted

  1957. by the father

  1958. right

1959. this is the evidence of that

  1960. you don't understand this

1961. because it was not given

1962. to you by the father

1963. that you should come to me

  1964. and the disciples left

  1965. verse 67

  1966. so Jesus said

  1967. to the twelve

1968. do you want to go away

  1969. as well

  1970. and Simon Peter

  1971. answered him

  1972. Lord

1973. to whom shall we go

  1974. where would we go

  1975. where would we go

  1976. you have the words

  1977. of eternal life

  1978. and we have believed

1979. and have come to know

1980. that you are the holy one

  1981. of God

  1982. good soil

  1983. right

  1984. the word

  1985. had taken root

  1986. in his heart

  1987. where are we going

  1988. to go

  1989. right

  1990. they followed him

  1991. to death

  1992. right

  1993. through various circumstances

  1994. but they followed him

  1995. to death

  1996. the disciples

  1997. martyred on his behalf

  1998. Isaiah chapter 55

    Isaiah 55 chapter mention

  1999. gotta go here too

  2000. Isaiah chapter 55

    Isaiah 55 chapter mention

2001. Isaiah is a major prophet

2002. again because of the length

  2003. of the book

  2004. Isaiah chapter 55

    Isaiah 55 chapter mention

  2005. there's some classically

  2006. quoted texts here

  2007. that

  2008. that I hear

  2009. by themselves

  2010. very often

  2011. but not together

  2012. all that often

  2013. and

  2014. I was

  2015. very invigorated

  2016. when I saw

  2017. their nature

  2018. together

  2019. and why it is

  2020. that

  2021. that God spoke

  2022. through Isaiah

  2023. in this way

2024. it says in verse 8

  2025. for my thoughts

  2026. are not your thoughts

  2027. neither are your ways

  2028. my ways

  2029. declares the Lord

  2030. for as the heavens

2031. are higher than the earth

  2032. so are my ways

  2033. higher than your ways

  2034. and my thoughts

  2035. than your thoughts

  2036. so as you're contemplating

  2037. this soil condition

  2038. right

2039. as you're trying to work

  2040. through

  2041. the schemes of man

  2042. to bring about salvation

  2043. right

  2044. hear this

  2045. my thoughts

  2046. are not your thoughts

  2047. neither are my ways

  2048. your ways

  2049. declare the Lord

  2050. verse 10

  2051. for as the rain

  2052. and the snow

  2053. come down from heaven

2054. and do not return there

  2055. but water the earth

  2056. making it bring forth

  2057. and sprout

2058. giving seed to the sower

2059. and bread to the eater

2060. so shall my word be

  2061. that goes out

  2062. from my mouth

  2063. it shall not return

  2064. to me empty

  2065. but it shall accomplish

  2066. that which I purchase

  2067. purpose

  2068. and shall succeed

  2069. in the thing

2070. for which I sent it

  2071. the rain

  2072. will accomplish

  2073. what I sent it

  2074. to do

  2075. right

  2076. we use this

  2077. we speak of this

2078. speaking of the word of God

  2079. all the time

  2080. right

  2081. it is my prayer

  2082. before I preach

  2083. that God will accomplish

2084. what he intends to accomplish

  2085. on a Sunday morning

  2086. right

2087. in spite of all of my frailty

2088. and all of my inability

2089. and all of my insecurity

  2090. right

  2091. that he will accomplish

2092. what he intends to accomplish

  2093. by that

  2094. in verse 12

2095. for you shall go out in joy

2096. and be led forth in peace

  2097. it's in this promise

  2098. to those of us

  2099. who believe

  2100. in the gospel

2101. the mountains and the hills

  2102. before you

  2103. shall break forth

  2104. into singing

  2105. and all the trees

  2106. of the field

  2107. shall clap their hands

  2108. right

  2109. the knowledge

2110. of the glory of God

  2111. being spread

  2112. amongst the world

  2113. instead of the thorn

2114. shall come up the cypress

  2115. instead of the briar

2116. shall come up the myrtle

  2117. and it shall make

2118. a name for the Lord

  2119. an everlasting sign

  2120. that shall not be

  2121. cut off

  2122. there's promise

  2123. in this

  2124. that there is

  2125. good soil

  2126. right

  2127. it exists

  2128. in the world

  2129. and therefore

2130. as the synod of Dort

  2131. concluded

  2132. we ought to be

  2133. sowing seed

  2134. right

  2135. promiscuously

  2136. such a negative word

  2137. so often

  2138. right

2139. but we ought to be

  2140. throwing it

  2141. in abundance

2142. we ought to be going out

  2143. being people

  2144. of the word

  2145. that sow

  2146. the knowledge

  2147. of Jesus Christ

  2148. everywhere

  2149. so

  2150. what kind of soil

  2151. are you

  2152. you must

  2153. ask yourself

  2154. that question

  2155. you must pray

  2156. if you are not

  2157. good soil

  2158. if you don't have

  2159. a confidence

  2160. in that

  2161. you must

  2162. pray

  2163. that God

  2164. would save your soul

  2165. repent

  2166. and believe

  2167. recognize

  2168. the depth

  2169. of your sin

  2170. your offense

  2171. to God

  2172. and turn to him

  2173. right

  2174. he's a loving God

2175. he has a bounding mercy

2176. to pour out on you

  2177. there's nothing

  2178. you can do

  2179. there's no great sin

  2180. that would cause God

2181. to not want to show you mercy

2182. so cry out to him

  2183. if you're good soil

  2184. you may find yourself

  2185. this morning

  2186. and I would imagine

2187. that most of us do

  2188. not bearing fruit

  2189. thirty fold

  2190. and sixty fold

  2191. and a hundred fold

  2192. right

  2193. but cold

  2194. in our affection

  2195. for Christ

  2196. pray this morning

  2197. that God would work

  2198. in you

  2199. right

  2200. that the roots

  2201. would go down

  2202. deeper

  2203. sprout up more

  2204. that you might produce

  2205. and produce

  2206. and produce

  2207. and I promise you

2208. if you will do this

  2209. you will never

  2210. regret it

2211. to the end of your life

  2212. wherever God takes you

  2213. to the hardest places

  2214. of the world

  2215. the great trial

  2216. and persecution

  2217. even possibly

  2218. to death

  2219. for your faith

  2220. you will never regret

  2221. trading the things

  2222. of this world

  2223. the lesser joy

  2224. for the greater joy

  2225. that is found

  2226. in Christ

  2227. let's pray together

  2228. a lot of times

  2229. a lot of times

  2230. a lot of times

  2231. a lot of times

  2232. a lot of times

  2233. a lot of times

  2234. a lot of times
