  1. On that day when evening had come, he said to them, let us go across to the other side.

  2. And leaving the crowd, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was.

  3. And other boats were with him.

  4. And a great windstorm arose, and the waves were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was already filling.

  5. But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion.

  6. And they awoke him and said to him, teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?

  7. And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, peace, be still.

  8. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.

  9. He said to them, why are you so afraid?

  10. Have you still no faith?

  11. And they were filled with great fear and said to one another, who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?

  12. Let's pray together.

  13. Father God, we do thank you this morning for your holy word.

  14. And we thank you for Christ, who is your very character made manifest amongst us.

  15. And we thank you for the gospel of Mark, that we have an opportunity to behold his life, to learn from it, to glean, to wonder at who he was.

  16. We thank you for his accomplished work.

  17. We thank you for who he is to us this day.

  18. And I pray that by the gift of the Spirit, to those of us who have placed our faith in him, that we might learn, we might understand, we might apply your word today in wisdom in this world.

  19. For the great end cause of magnifying your name.

  20. And we pray this in Christ's name.

  21. Amen.

  22. Well, we would do well this morning as we would any time we study the gospel of Mark together to remember why it is Mark wrote this gospel account.

  23. And it's very similar to the other gospel accounts.

  24. It shouldn't be a strange concept to you.

  25. But remember Mark 1, verse 1, it reads,

    Mark 1:1

  26. The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

  27. And he takes a great deal of pains in presenting to us the fact that Jesus Christ was, in fact, the Son of God.

  28. And therefore, God himself made flesh to dwell amongst us.

  29. And the natural then response to understanding that is that we might follow him.

  30. That we will be disciples of Christ.

  31. And disciples of Christ make disciples.

  32. So you've heard me saying over and over again that the great call of Mark to our lives is to recognize Jesus as the Christ.

  33. And to become disciple-making disciples of Jesus the Christ.

  34. We've witnessed a series of Jesus' miracles up to this point.

  35. In fact, Mark fires through them pretty quickly for us.

  36. Kind of laying out for us the authority that Jesus had.

  37. His power over creation we've seen a number of times already in his healings.

  38. That he has healed people of physical illness means that he had to do some regenerative work in them.

  39. That there was some malady of a particular organ or of some limbs and he had to do a regenerative work.

  40. Not apply some medicine but actually make something new.

  41. So we've already seen this power over creation displayed for us in the gospel.

  42. But here we see it in a particularly mighty way.

  43. We see a display of Jesus as the creator and sustainer of creation.

  44. Now, if you study much the attributes of God, you will come to know and understand that there are attributes of God that are both communicable.

  45. Meaning things that we can do.

  46. God is love.

  47. Therefore, we can love.

  48. And there are also some incommunicable attributes of God.

  49. Things that God is that we will never be.

  50. We're called to be holy because God is holy.

  51. Not like God is holy.

  52. We'll never be like God in that way.

  53. And another way that we'll never be like God is in his creativity.

  54. And I'm not suggesting that we cease using that term for the things that we do that are creative.

  55. I have a very creative wife and I will continue to call her creative and appreciate her creativity.

  56. But none of us are creative the way that God is creative.

  57. The way that Jesus Christ is creative.

  58. And that is that God creates from nothing.

  59. The fancy Latin term for that is ex nihilo if you care about such things.

  60. We will never be this way.

  61. And in fact, I think one of the reasons that we're so wired to appreciate creativity

  62. is that it gives some semblance, some reflection of who God is.

  63. That God creates beauty.

  64. Whether you like art or not, if that's where your mind is gone,

  65. you may appreciate music.

  66. You may appreciate buildings that are beautiful to behold.

  67. All of these things are some reflection of God's creative person.

  68. So we see that on display here in the person of Jesus Christ.

  69. And this shouldn't be, for those of us who are students of the Bible, any real surprise.

  70. We should already know this to be true.

  71. I've got a number of texts I'd like for you to try to turn with me quickly for the sake of time.

  72. John 1, verses 1-3.

    John 1:1–3

  73. Anybody catch that I just spilled water all over myself?

  74. I'm just not being quite as full.

  75. In the beginning was the Word, being Christ.

  76. This is who John is writing of.

  77. And the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

  78. He was in the beginning with God.

  79. And all things were made through Him,

  80. and without Him was not anything made that was made.

  81. Jesus Christ.

  82. All things were made through Him,

  83. and nothing was made apart from Him.

  84. Ready?

  85. Hebrews 1, verses 1-3.

    Hebrews 1:1–3

  86. Hebrews 1, verse 1.

    Hebrews 1:1

  87. Long ago, at many times and in many ways,

  88. God spoke to our fathers by the prophets,

  89. but in these last days He has spoken to us by His Son,

  90. whom He appointed the heir of all things,

  91. through whom He also created the world.

  92. He is the radiance of the glory of God,

  93. and the exact imprint of His nature,

  94. the facsimile of God.

  95. And He upholds the universe by the word of His power,

  96. certainly the creator and sustainer.

  97. of this world.

  98. Colossians 1.

  99. Don't turn in here.

  100. Just stick with me.

  101. Colossians 1, verses 16-17.

    Colossians 1:16–17

  102. For by Him all things were created,

  103. in heaven and on earth,

  104. visible and invisible,

  105. whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities,

  106. all things were created through Him and for Him.

  107. And He is before all things,

  108. and in Him all things hold together.

  109. And the last one, 1 Corinthians 8, verse 6.

    1 Corinthians 8:6

  110. For us there is one God, the Father,

  111. from whom are all things,

  112. and from whom we exist,

  113. and one Lord, Jesus Christ,

  114. through whom are all things,

  115. and through whom we exist.

  116. And this is only a sampling of texts

  117. in the New Testament

  118. that make this very apparent to us,

  119. that Jesus Christ,

  120. being the Son of God,

  121. is Himself God,

  122. and is therefore the creator

  123. and the sustainer of the universe.

  124. And this is what we see displayed for us

  125. as He has power over this storm.

  126. There's much conversation as of late

  127. about the question of origin.

  128. Recently there was a debate

  129. between Bill Nye, the science guy,

  130. and Ken Ham,

  131. which had some mixed review

  132. at the quality of the debate itself.

  133. But that sparked a lot of conversation.

  134. There's a lot of people talking about

  135. the issue of origin right now

  136. and applying science to the age of the earth.

  137. And all of those things are important and valuable.

  138. And I appreciate young earth apologists

  139. that are making a case

  140. for the inerrancy of Scripture in that way.

  141. I love it.

  142. I appreciate that.

  143. But more importantly than all of that,

  144. if you want to ask where our origin is from,

  145. how did this world come into existence?

  146. It came into existence by Jesus.

  147. That is it.

  148. That is the answer to this great question.

  149. I have encouraged a number of you,

  150. particularly the families,

  151. to use with your children

  152. a resource called New City Catechism.

  153. I would actually encourage everyone in here

  154. to use it as a resource.

  155. A question and an answer.

  156. A doctrinal layout.

  157. A road map, so to speak,

  158. for us to understand the truths of God

  159. in a very systematic way.

  160. And the second question of that,

  161. which we're working on with Cade,

  162. is what is God?

  163. What is God?

  164. And the answer,

  165. and Cade can say this with confidence,

  166. I don't think he fully understands it,

  167. but is that God is the creator

  168. and sustainer of everyone and everything.

  169. And this is such an important truth

  170. for us to understand.

  171. It's so key that we wrap our minds

  172. around who Jesus is.

  173. This is a magnificent thing about our Lord.

  174. In fact, the use of the word Lord

  175. in the Old Testament

  176. was the word Yahweh.

  177. In Hebrew, spelled Y-H-W-Y

  178. in our English equivalent of that.

  179. Which is the name that God gave Himself

  180. in speaking to Moses in the burning bush,

  181. which was to say,

  182. I am.

  183. That's how we read it in English.

  184. I am.

  185. In that everything emanates from Him.

  186. You've heard me say before

  187. that everything plugs into God.

  188. God plugs into nothing.

  189. He is self-sufficient.

  190. He is self-sustaining.

  191. All the power in this universe

  192. comes from His being.

  193. And in this miracle,

  194. Jesus expresses Himself uniquely

  195. as the Great I Am.

  196. This is huge.

  197. The miracles before this

  198. have been a big deal.

  199. He's shown that He has authority over sin.

  200. He's shown that He has authority over Satan.

  201. He's shown that He has authority over flesh

  202. and that failing.

  203. But here He is saying,

  204. I am the Great I Am.

  205. Watch what I'm about to do.

  206. Now I'll tell you that I've stolen great part

  207. the outline for this sermon

  208. from John MacArthur.

  209. I just think it's proper to give him

  210. proper due in this

  211. and not be a plagiarizer.

  212. College students know what that means.

  213. But we're going to look at this story

  214. in four different parts.

  215. The calm before the storm.

  216. The calm during the storm.

  217. The calm after the storm.

  218. And the storm after the calm.

  219. So that's how we're going to progress

  220. through this together.

  221. So let's look first

  222. at the calm during the storm.

  223. Verse 37.

  224. We're just going to read that again

  225. so it's fresh in our minds.

  226. And a great windstorm arose.

  227. Oh, excuse me.

  228. I just jumped.

  229. On that day when evening had come,

  230. He said to them,

  231. Let us go across to the other side.

  232. And leaving the crowd,

  233. they took Him with them in the boat

  234. just as He was.

  235. And other boats were with them.

  236. Now, it's widely understood.

  237. There's some debate.

  238. We can't say with a great deal of finality on this.

  239. But that this event proceeds,

  240. follows up a day,

  241. excuse me,

  242. follows a day of teaching.

  243. So beginning in chapter 4,

  244. we see Him casting out on the side

  245. teaching from a boat.

  246. He's on the side of the Sea of Galilee.

  247. And He's now gotten out

  248. because the crowd is pressing it around Him

  249. in a boat.

  250. And He uses the water then

  251. as a natural projection.

  252. He didn't have a handy mic

  253. that thumps His voice

  254. when He looks the wrong direction.

  255. But spoke out across the water

  256. so that all this crowd

  257. might hear the message

  258. that He was teaching.

  259. And we saw very quickly

  260. kind of backing up that

  261. a series of four sayings,

  262. some of them parables,

  263. some not really fitting into that mold.

  264. And I believe that Mark

  265. intends for us to see this

  266. as a day of teaching.

  267. There's some evidence to that.

  268. There's just a little bit of evidence

  269. contrary to that,

  270. like in verse 10.

  271. And when He was alone,

  272. those around Him with the twelve

  273. asked Him about the parables.

  274. So at some point,

  275. He was not with the crowd

  276. and was able to give some explanation

  277. to the disciples.

  278. Ultimately, it doesn't really matter.

  279. And praise God for that.

  280. But certainly,

  281. He has concluded some teaching.

  282. And it's likely,

  283. I would err,

  284. if I'm going to err on a side,

  285. I would err to the side,

  286. of this being a full day of teaching.

  287. Because it says,

  288. in verse 36,

  289. that they took Him with them

  290. in the boat.

  291. And the article is there

  292. in the original language.

  293. So, what boat are they referring to?

  294. And I would assume

  295. that it was the boat

  296. that He was teaching from

  297. in the beginning of chapter 4.

  298. So it's been this

  299. long day of teaching.

  300. And I can say to you

  301. that preaching a 45-minute sermon

  302. is exhausting.

  303. And some of you in your lives

  304. will understand

  305. what that looks like

  306. and what that means

  307. and what it feels like

  308. to have this many eyes

  309. staring at you

  310. and have to kind of

  311. pour yourself out

  312. and to have both

  313. something happening

  314. coming out of your mouth

  315. and dialogue running

  316. in the back of your head.

  317. Like, why is He looking

  318. at me like that?

  319. I'm not really sure

  320. what I just said wrong.

  321. Or as I tend to invent words

  322. at times,

  323. I'm thinking,

  324. is that a word?

  325. I don't think that's a word.

  326. Should I go back

  327. and correct myself?

  328. No, I won't worry about it.

  329. And moving forward like that.

  330. And it's quite mentally exhausting.

  331. The preparation for such

  332. is exhausting.

  333. And so we see Jesus here

  334. wanting to get away.

  335. Getting in a boat

  336. in order to get away.

  337. Jesus was God in flesh,

  338. but He was still a man.

  339. And I'm always encouraged

  340. to see the times

  341. that He rested,

  342. the times that He withdrew,

  343. because I feel that so readily

  344. in my life as well.

  345. So there's a calm

  346. before the storm.

  347. There's a calm during the storm,

  348. beginning in verse 37.

  349. And a great windstorm arose,

  350. and the waves were breaking

  351. into the boat,

  352. so that the boat

  353. was already filling.

  354. But He was in the stern,

  355. asleep on the cushion,

  356. and they woke Him

  357. and said to Him,

  358. Teacher,

  359. do you not care

  360. that we are perishing?

  361. And He awoke

  362. and rebuked the wind

  363. and said to the sea,

  364. Peace.

  365. Be still.

  366. Now some of the incredibly

  367. fascinating things

  368. I learned this week

  369. were about the Sea of Galilee.

  370. As a person who likes adventure,

  371. I really want to go

  372. to the Sea of Galilee now.

  373. It's a fascinating place

  374. in the world.

  375. I would say primarily

  376. for its historical significance.

  377. Many very important things happen.

  378. The other lake miracle,

  379. Jesus walked on these waters,

  380. the Sea of Galilee.

  381. The fact that He stilled a storm

  382. on these waters

  383. would be a reason

  384. to go see this place.

  385. But it's unique

  386. in many different ways.

  387. It's different from

  388. all other bodies of water

  389. in the world.

  390. To give you some approximation

  391. of the size of it,

  392. it's 13 miles long

  393. and 8 miles wide,

  394. 64 square miles.

  395. And just to kind of

  396. help you understand that,

  397. Lake Lanier is 59 square miles.

  398. If you ever look at pictures

  399. of the Sea of Galilee,

  400. it's much more open.

  401. It doesn't quite have the fingers

  402. that Lake Lanier has.

  403. But it's roughly the same size.

  404. At its greatest depth,

  405. it's about 150 feet deep.

  406. Just like Lake Lanier,

  407. at the dam,

  408. it's about 150 feet deep.

  409. So it kind of helps,

  410. I think,

  411. you wrap your mind around

  412. this is not a massive

  413. body of water.

  414. It's unique in that

  415. it's 682 feet below sea level.

  416. Not the lowest lake in the world.

  417. The Dead Sea is the lowest,

  418. but the Dead Sea

  419. is a saltwater lake.

  420. This is the lowest

  421. freshwater lake in the world.

  422. 682 feet below sea level.

  423. Fed primarily by the Jordan River,

  424. although it does have

  425. some natural springs

  426. that feed it as well.

  427. What's really,

  428. really unique about

  429. this particular lake

  430. is the way that the mountains

  431. border it

  432. and the way the winds blow

  433. across this lake.

  434. Primarily in the wintertime.

  435. There are two seasons.

  436. The summer,

  437. there's some fairly regular storms

  438. that come in

  439. that can be calculated.

  440. In the wintertime,

  441. the winds come from

  442. a different direction

  443. and they are really hard

  444. to calculate.

  445. Come up at any moment.

  446. And this is the experience

  447. that they find themselves in.

  448. I can't say with certainty

  449. that this was in the wintertime,

  450. but they certainly

  451. didn't set out across the lake

  452. to brave a storm

  453. of this nature,

  454. so it's safe to assume

  455. that it came up on them

  456. very suddenly.

  457. Now get this.

  458. Imagine Lake Lanier.

  459. I think most of us

  460. have been out on the lake

  461. and the lake on a really windy day

  462. gets pretty choppy.

  463. Pretty choppy on the lake

  464. is like one foot waves.

  465. Those waves are caused

  466. by the wind.

  467. Well, on the Sea of Galilee,

  468. these waves can be up to

  469. ten feet high

  470. caused by the wind.

  471. Isn't that fascinating?

  472. Just a small body of water.

  473. Waves ten feet high.

  474. And these boats

  475. were low-sided boats.

  476. They were used to fish out of.

  477. They hauled nets aboard them

  478. and they hauled nets manually,

  479. not with some kind of a crane

  480. or something like that.

  481. So they were low-sided boats

  482. and these waves

  483. would have crashed

  484. across the deck.

  485. And we see here

  486. that it was happening,

  487. such a storm was happening

  488. that the boat was filling

  489. with water

  490. and a boat that's full of water

  491. sinks,

  492. just in case you didn't know that.

  493. Right?

  494. Now,

  495. up to seven of the disciples,

  496. possibly up to seven

  497. were confident,

  498. five,

  499. but up to seven of the disciples

  500. were fishermen.

  501. They would have been very familiar

  502. with this circumstance.

  503. Very familiar with it.

  504. They probably would have

  505. encountered it before.

  506. But here we see this calm

  507. during the storm

  508. as they're terribly concerned

  509. having experienced this,

  510. being in the midst of it,

  511. having the boat

  512. filling with water

  513. and in the back of the boat,

  514. Jesus is sleeping.

  515. Jesus is sleeping

  516. in the back of the boat.

  517. That's the stern,

  518. the back of the boat.

  519. And He's asleep on the cushion,

  520. which is probably something

  521. that was always in a boat like this

  522. and that the fishermen

  523. would sit on

  524. in order to steer the boat.

  525. He just decided to doze off

  526. and take a nap

  527. after his long day of teaching.

  528. Right?

  529. This is similar

  530. to the story of Jonah.

  531. Remember the story of Jonah?

  532. God calls him

  533. to go and preach to Nineveh,

  534. to call them to repent

  535. and turn to God.

  536. And he flees instead

  537. in the opposite direction

  538. across the Mediterranean

  539. towards a town called Tarshish.

  540. He doesn't quite get there,

  541. but a great storm comes up

  542. and he is also asleep in a boat.

  543. And he admits

  544. that it's probably his fault

  545. that this is happening.

  546. This is in Jonah 1

  547. and is thrown overboard.

  548. Although I think

  549. that this comparison

  550. is meant to express

  551. contrast

  552. rather than similarity.

  553. Right?

  554. It's meant to express

  555. contrast

  556. rather than similarity.

  557. Jonah

  558. is the victim

  559. rather than the victor

  560. in his story.

  561. Jonah was tired

  562. from running away

  563. from God.

  564. Fell into such a sleep

  565. that he could sleep

  566. through a storm

  567. like this.

  568. And I would

  569. propose to you

  570. that Jesus was tired

  571. because he was running

  572. after God.

  573. Jesus could rest

  574. because he knew

  575. the promises of Romans 8.28.

  576. Even though Paul

  577. had yet to write it,

  578. for those who love God,

  579. all things work together

  580. for good.

  581. For those who are called

  582. according to his purpose,

  583. he could rest

  584. confident

  585. in the hands

  586. of the king.

  587. Further,

  588. as Jonah's running away

  589. from the call of God

  590. to preach good news

  591. to the people of Nineveh,

  592. Jesus is running

  593. towards

  594. a divine appointment.

  595. In John 5.19,

  596. Jesus says,

  597. Truly, truly,

  598. I say to you,

  599. the Son can do nothing

  600. of his own accord,

  601. but only what he sees

  602. the Father doing.

  603. For whatever the Father does,

  604. that the Son does likewise.

  605. He had a great confidence

  606. in his ministry.

  607. He didn't have to look

  608. to some methodology.

  609. He didn't have to

  610. come up with some

  611. sort of strategy.

  612. His single-mindedness

  613. is that he would listen

  614. to what the Father

  615. was doing

  616. and do

  617. what he said.

  618. So he gets into a boat

  619. and he sets out

  620. across a lake

  621. headed from the west

  622. side of the lake

  623. to the east

  624. side of the lake.

  625. We don't know.

  626. Did Jesus know

  627. the encounter

  628. he was about to experience?

  629. Maybe.

  630. Probably not.

  631. I would guess

  632. in his humanity

  633. that he did not know

  634. the future

  635. of his encounter

  636. on the other side

  637. of the lake,

  638. but he knew

  639. that he was meant

  640. to go across the lake

  641. and he could rest

  642. in that.

  643. Now we see where he goes

  644. at the beginning

  645. of chapter 5.

  646. We'll talk about this

  647. at length

  648. in some coming weeks.

  649. Chapter 5,

  650. verse 1,

  651. he ends up in the

  652. land of the Gerasenes.

  653. There are two cities there,

  654. Gerasa and Gadara,

  655. I'm assuming,

  656. is the way you pronounce

  657. these things.

  658. And this is where

  659. he casts out

  660. a demon,

  661. which is demons,

  662. called legion.

  663. Remember the story

  664. of the crazy man

  665. who lived amongst

  666. the tombs

  667. and he casts the demons

  668. out and he puts them

  669. into a herd of pigs?

  670. Guess what Jews

  671. didn't eat?

  672. Pigs.

  673. These are Gentile towns

  674. that he's gone to.

  675. Jesus' primary ministry

  676. was amongst Jewish people,

  677. but here we see him

  678. crossing to the other

  679. side of the lake

  680. to proclaim

  681. the good news

  682. of the coming kingdom,

  683. which was his

  684. consistent message

  685. to Gentile peoples.

  686. How do we know this?

  687. Chapter 5,

  688. verse 18,

  689. the man that he's

  690. cast this legion

  691. out of

  692. wants to go with him.

  693. They're going to get

  694. back in the boat

  695. and go back across

  696. the Sea of Galilee

  697. and he wants to go with him

  698. and instead

  699. he tells him

  700. to stay.

  701. He tells him to stay

  702. and go share

  703. the good news.

  704. Verse 19 and 20,

  705. into the Decapolis,

  706. which is a group

  707. of ten cities

  708. which were on the

  709. eastern front

  710. of the Roman Empire

  711. in modern day Jordan,

  712. they were Gentile cities

  713. in this largely Jewish region

  714. and this is where

  715. this man that legion

  716. was cast out of

  717. goes and shares

  718. the good news

  719. of the coming kingdom.

  720. I was so enlivened

  721. by this

  722. as I read this

  723. because our God

  724. is a global God.

  725. He makes

  726. global promises

  727. all throughout

  728. the Old Testament.

  729. We know that we are meant

  730. to go to the ends

  731. of the earth

  732. and here we see

  733. Jesus as part of that work

  734. as ministering primarily

  735. to Jewish people

  736. of Jewish descent

  737. but also expanding

  738. that reality

  739. out and beyond

  740. to Gentiles as well.

  741. We read in Isaiah 60

    Isaiah 60:1–3

  742. verses 1-3

  743. Arise, shine

  744. for your light has come

  745. and the glory of the Lord

  746. has risen upon you

  747. for behold

  748. darkness shall cover the earth

  749. and thick darkness

  750. the peoples

  751. but the Lord

  752. will arise upon you

  753. and His glory

  754. will be seen upon you

  755. and nations shall come

  756. to your light

  757. and kings

  758. to the brightness

  759. of your shining.

  760. And Jesus could

  761. rest

  762. in this.

  763. So that's the calm

  764. during the storm.

  765. And then the calm

  766. after the storm.

  767. He awakes

  768. and He rebukes

  769. the wind

  770. and rebukes it

  771. peace

  772. be still

  773. and the wind

  774. ceased

  775. and there was

  776. a great calm.

  777. He said to them

  778. why are you so afraid?

  779. Have you still

  780. no faith?

  781. Now remember

  782. that these are the men

  783. that Jesus spoke to

  784. in chapter 4

  785. verse 11

  786. He says

  787. to these men

  788. to you has been given

  789. the secret

  790. of the kingdom of God.

  791. We know that these men

  792. except for one

  793. all became

  794. followers of Christ

  795. in their finality.

  796. They pursued Him

  797. to death.

  798. But yet

  799. they still lacked faith

  800. at this point.

  801. What a fascinating

  802. time

  803. in history.

  804. They still

  805. lacked

  806. the faith

  807. to believe

  808. He is

  809. who He says

  810. He is.

  811. He has made this point

  812. to them

  813. previously

  814. at the end of chapter 3.

  815. They are those

  816. that are sitting

  817. with Him

  818. and He says

  819. that those who are

  820. my family

  821. those who are

  822. my mothers

  823. and my brothers

  824. and my sisters

  825. are those who do

  826. the will

  827. of my Father.

  828. He has already

  829. made this claim

  830. that He is the Son of God

  831. again and again

  832. and again

  833. and yet they still

  834. find their faith

  835. so weak.

  836. Faith is confidence

  837. in the person

  838. and promises

  839. of God

  840. which find their

  841. fulfillment in Christ.

  842. Faith is confidence

  843. in the person

  844. and promises

  845. of God

  846. which find their

  847. fulfillment in Christ.

  848. 2 Corinthians 1.20

  849. says for all the promises

  850. of God

  851. find their yes

  852. in Him

  853. being Jesus.

  854. So we ask this question

  855. why are you so afraid?

  856. If you believe I am

  857. who I say I am

  858. why are you afraid?

  859. If I am God incarnate

  860. coming to dwell amongst you

  861. and I'm asleep on the boat

  862. why are you afraid

  863. of a little storm?

  864. Ten foot waves

  865. right?

  866. Why are you afraid

  867. of a little storm?

  868. Have you still

  869. no faith?

  870. And this is a piercing

  871. question

  872. that Jesus asked

  873. and we would do well

  874. to ask ourselves

  875. the same question.

  876. Do we have faith

  877. that Jesus Christ

  878. is the Son of God?

  879. That's the case

  880. that's been building here

  881. that Mark is driving at.

  882. And most of us

  883. I believe

  884. with a great deal

  885. of confidence

  886. in the room

  887. can say yes

  888. of course I do.

  889. Of course I believe

  890. that Jesus is the Son of God

  891. and I see fruit

  892. in your lives

  893. that bear evidence

  894. of this reality.

  895. But I don't know that

  896. to be true

  897. of everyone in here.

  898. And we would be remiss

  899. at this point

  900. if we didn't ask

  901. that question.

  902. Do you believe

  903. that Jesus

  904. is the Christ?

  905. It's not merely enough

  906. just to say it.

  907. It's not enough

  908. just to have

  909. some mental recognition

  910. of it.

  911. It's not enough

  912. to have grown up

  913. in a Christian home

  914. and to attend church services

  915. on a regular basis.

  916. All those things

  917. are outward trappings.

  918. Where is your heart?

  919. At the end of chapter 3

  920. we found three categories.

  921. We found his family

  922. coming to him

  923. thinking that he was insane.

  924. That he was a lunatic.

  925. We saw the scribes

  926. accusing him

  927. of being a liar.

  928. Saying that he couldn't

  929. possibly be

  930. the son of God

  931. but that he must be

  932. the son of Satan

  933. doing these miracles

  934. from the power of Satan.

  935. And then we see

  936. those who are truly

  937. his family

  938. his mothers

  939. and his brothers

  940. doing the will of God

  941. and that is to believe

  942. that he is the Christ.

  943. So he's either going to be

  944. a liar

  945. a lunatic

  946. or Lord

  947. in your life.

  948. And this

  949. question

  950. and the answer to it

  951. has such

  952. great

  953. consequence.

  954. I would plead with you

  955. if you can't say

  956. with confidence

  957. you place your faith

  958. in Christ

  959. do that today.

  960. Begin searching.

  961. Begin asking questions.

  962. Begin stepping out

  963. of Christendom

  964. this little bubble

  965. that we live in

  966. that for some people

  967. is so magical

  968. and neat

  969. and for some people

  970. is so distasteful

  971. because they've seen

  972. the hypocrisy

  973. so many.

  974. And begin to really

  975. ask questions

  976. of your heart.

  977. What do I believe

  978. about Jesus Christ?

  979. There is no more

  980. important question

  981. in this world.

  982. Do I believe

  983. that he was

  984. in fact

  985. the Son of God?

  986. And if what he said

  987. was true

  988. about himself

  989. then this Bible

  990. these scriptures

  991. are of utmost importance

  992. and the way we arrange

  993. our lives by them

  994. matter immensely.

  995. The question

  996. the answer to this question

  997. has eternal consequence

  998. and I can't

  999. with you

1000. I'm right there with you

1001. I'm not more high minded

  1002. than you

1003. I cannot wrap my mind

  1004. around eternity.

  1005. I do not know

  1006. what that looks like.

  1007. Every example I've seen

  1008. people have told me

1009. oh I saw this great example

  1010. somebody was showing

  1011. about eternity

1012. that is a poor example

  1013. of eternity.

  1014. A piece of string

  1015. stretched across a string

1016. with a little flag on it

  1017. this is your life

  1018. this is eternity

  1019. no

  1020. you can measure that

  1021. right?

  1022. Eternity is much bigger

  1023. than that

  1024. it's forever

  1025. I don't even know

  1026. it's so

  1027. so difficult to see

  1028. but the answer

  1029. to this question

  1030. has eternal consequence

  1031. death

  1032. pain

  1033. punishment

  1034. I fully believe

  1035. in hell

  1036. Jesus spoke about it

  1037. more than he spoke

  1038. about heaven

  1039. there's retribution

  1040. coming

  1041. for those who are

  1042. enemies of God

  1043. who are not found

  1044. in his family

1045. what that would be like

  1046. I just can't imagine

  1047. I can't imagine

  1048. what eternal joy

  1049. is like

  1050. and that's what's promised

  1051. to those of us

  1052. who do believe

1053. that Jesus is the Christ

  1054. this matters not just

  1055. for eternity

1056. but it matters now too

1057. the way we arrange our lives

1058. what we believe to be true

  1059. matters now

1060. you want to have life

  1061. now

  1062. believe in Christ

1063. you want to have death

1064. you want to live a miserable life

1065. you've come to the end

  1066. of everything

1067. that you think might possibly

  1068. bring you some satisfaction

  1069. and some joy

  1070. continue on that path

  1071. right?

1072. reject Jesus as the Christ

  1073. you want life

  1074. accept him

  1075. for who he is

  1076. who he said

  1077. he is

  1078. that's a very piercing

  1079. question

  1080. have you still

  1081. no

  1082. faith

  1083. that's the calm

  1084. after the storm

  1085. then there's a bit of a storm

  1086. after the calm

  1087. it says

  1088. and they were filled

  1089. with great fear

1090. and said to one another

  1091. who then is this

  1092. that even the wind

  1093. and the sea

  1094. obey him

  1095. you see their response

  1096. of faithlessness

  1097. at this point

  1098. and they really

  1099. should have known

  1100. these men

1101. while they were simple men

  1102. they would have known

  1103. their scriptures

  1104. as Jews

  1105. they would have been

  1106. saturated by this

  1107. and they should have

  1108. known who he was

  1109. Job 38

  1110. 8-11

  1111. says

1112. this is God speaking to Job

1113. or who shut in the sea

  1114. with doors

  1115. when it burst out

  1116. from the womb

  1117. when I made clouds

  1118. its garment

  1119. and thick darkness

  1120. its swaddling band

  1121. and prescribed limits

  1122. for it

  1123. and set bars

  1124. and doors

  1125. and said

1126. thus far shall you come

  1127. and no farther

1128. and here shall your proud waves

  1129. be stayed

  1130. they would have been

  1131. familiar with

  1132. these words of God

  1133. to Job

  1134. right

  1135. and the clear answer

  1136. to that is

  1137. me

  1138. God

  1139. the one who's speaking

  1140. I am the one

  1141. who set the limits

  1142. on the sea

1143. we see in Psalm 65

  1144. a Psalm of David

  1145. verses 5-8

  1146. by awesome deeds

  1147. you answer us

  1148. with righteousness

1149. O God of our salvation

  1150. the hope of all

1151. the ends of the earth

1152. and of the farthest seas

1153. the one who by his strength

  1154. established the mountains

  1155. being girded with might

  1156. who stills the roaring

  1157. of the seas

1158. the roaring of their waves

1159. the tumult of the peoples

1160. so that those who dwell

1161. at the ends of the earth

1162. are in awe at your signs

1163. you make the going out

  1164. of the morning

  1165. and the evening

  1166. to shout for joy

  1167. David saw

  1168. that this Christ

  1169. was going to

  1170. still

  1171. the roaring

  1172. of the waves

  1173. and here they are

  1174. witnessing it

  1175. unique characters

  1176. in history

  1177. in the boat

  1178. with Christ

  1179. when there is a

  1180. great calm

  1181. brought about

  1182. by his simple words

  1183. peace

  1184. be still

  1185. and yet they didn't

  1186. believe

  1187. there is a storm

1188. going on in their hearts

  1189. who is

  1190. this man

  1191. they feared him

  1192. it says

  1193. a man who speaks

  1194. to the waves

  1195. and they

  1196. obey

  1197. what we believe

  1198. about Jesus

  1199. has to have

  1200. some real effect

  1201. in our lives

  1202. in fact

  1203. the word believe

1204. that we see so often

  1205. throughout our New Testament

  1206. scriptures

  1207. is the Greek word

  1208. pastuo

  1209. and it means

  1210. to be persuaded of

  1211. to place confidence in

  1212. it carries a weight

  1213. with it

  1214. that's not simply

  1215. understanding something

  1216. to be true

  1217. but understanding it

  1218. to be true

  1219. and having it affect

1220. the way that you live

  1221. it's that kind

  1222. of a belief

  1223. John 14

  1224. 12

  1225. Jesus says

  1226. truly truly

  1227. I say to you

  1228. whoever

  1229. believes in me

  1230. will also do

  1231. the works

  1232. that I do

  1233. and greater works

  1234. than these

  1235. will he do

  1236. because I am going

  1237. to the Father

  1238. whoever believes

  1239. in me

  1240. has this kind of

  1241. deep abiding

  1242. belief

  1243. this persuasion

  1244. this confidence

  1245. in who Jesus

  1246. is

  1247. will also

  1248. do the works

  1249. that I do

  1250. so the belief

  1251. in us

  1252. births

  1253. activity

  1254. it births

  1255. good works

  1256. it births

  1257. following the example

  1258. of Christ

1259. and to make it so simple

  1260. and repetitive

  1261. for you

  1262. it makes us

  1263. disciple making disciples

  1264. those who pursue Christ

1265. in all that he did

  1266. and Jesus was about

  1267. the work

  1268. of seeking

  1269. and saving

  1270. the lost

  1271. so the reality

  1272. that Jesus Christ

1273. is the Son of God

  1274. has real implication

  1275. for today's living

1276. we could just look at this

  1277. and say

  1278. man that was awesome

  1279. how cool

  1280. Jesus spoke

  1281. and the waves stopped

  1282. but it has

  1283. real implications

  1284. for today

  1285. this reality

  1286. that Jesus Christ

  1287. is the Son

  1288. of God

  1289. 1 John 5

  1290. 12 says

  1291. God has given us

  1292. eternal life

  1293. and this life

  1294. is in his Son

1295. he who has the Son

  1296. has life

  1297. who has not

  1298. the Son of God

  1299. has not

  1300. life

  1301. and the opposite

  1302. of that being

  1303. death

  1304. I mentioned that

  1305. previously

  1306. right

  1307. he is

  1308. the surety

  1309. of our salvation

  1310. placing our faith

  1311. in him

  1312. and that means

  1313. something today

  1314. your confidence

  1315. in who Jesus is

  1316. means something

  1317. for your position

  1318. today

  1319. his accomplished

  1320. work

  1321. is what's granted

  1322. you access

  1323. into the family

  1324. of God

  1325. it's what's given

  1326. you adoption

  1327. you are a

  1328. daughter

  1329. or a son

  1330. of the most

  1331. high

  1332. because of

  1333. the accomplished

  1334. work of Christ

  1335. we don't believe

  1336. he was the

  1337. the Son of God

  1338. then his work

  1339. was nothing

  1340. he was just

  1341. a man

  1342. who was crazy

  1343. and died

  1344. for his insanity

  1345. Galatians 2 20

  1346. says that we

  1347. live by faith

1348. in the Son of God

  1349. who loved us

  1350. and gave himself

  1351. for us

  1352. so it carries out

  1353. a process in our

  1354. life

  1355. the continual

  1356. believing

  1357. in the good news

  1358. of Jesus Christ

  1359. carries out a process

  1360. of faith for us

  1361. it builds our faith

  1362. the opposite

  1363. puts faith to death

  1364. in our lives

  1365. as Chris so

  1366. poignantly said

  1367. this morning

  1368. in our Sunday

  1369. school class

  1370. right

  1371. believing

  1372. that Jesus

  1373. is who he says

  1374. he is

  1375. believing in the

  1376. work that he did

  1377. that it has been

  1378. accomplished

  1379. births faith in us

  1380. and so we live

  1381. by that

  1382. faith

  1383. God creates

  1384. life in us

  1385. in Jesus Christ

  1386. and God sustains

  1387. life in us

  1388. in Jesus Christ

  1389. remember who God is

  1390. the creator

  1391. and sustainer

  1392. of everyone

  1393. and everything

  1394. this happens

  1395. by the person

  1396. and work

  1397. of Jesus Christ

  1398. it means something

  1399. for you and I

  1400. today

  1401. today

  1402. it means something

  1403. right now

  1404. sitting in your chair

  1405. this moment

  1406. this great reality

  1407. this means something

1408. for one of our elders

  1409. this morning

  1410. Stan Luttrell

  1411. and his family

  1412. aren't here

  1413. you may note

  1414. they're in Tennessee

  1415. where his father

  1416. is potentially dying

  1417. he's had a heart condition

  1418. had a stint

  1419. put in yesterday

  1420. we're going to reach

  1421. the 24 hour mark

  1422. at about noon

  1423. of the success

  1424. of such an operation

  1425. it means something

  1426. for them

  1427. as they sit

  1428. at his bedside

  1429. wondering what

  1430. will happen to him

  1431. it means that God

  1432. is able to heal

  1433. his father

  1434. that it's possible

  1435. that that might happen

1436. that he can pray that

  1437. that if it's God's will

1438. God can heal his father

  1439. if we see

  1440. his father

  1441. come back

  1442. to some

  1443. level of rejuvenation

1444. this will be a great work

  1445. of God

  1446. maybe by the hands

  1447. of able doctors

  1448. but it will certainly

1449. be a work of God

  1450. and Stan's father

1451. as far as he knows

  1452. is not a believer

1453. he may be at the very

  1454. end of his life

  1455. right now

  1456. and his eternal

  1457. surety

  1458. is not secure

  1459. his dad may be

  1460. facing an eternity

  1461. of torment

  1462. and separation

  1463. from God

  1464. knowing that Jesus

  1465. is the Christ

  1466. knowing that he is

  1467. in fact

  1468. God himself

  1469. that he can say

  1470. to the waves

  1471. and the wind

  1472. peace be still

  1473. and they obey him

  1474. certainly means

  1475. that Jesus is able

  1476. to save his father

  1477. you can pray

  1478. confident prayers

  1479. that God would

  1480. save his father

  1481. it means things

  1482. for us

  1483. day by day

  1484. that we remember

  1485. who Jesus

  1486. is

  1487. the vision statement

  1488. of Christ Family Church

  1489. that Christ Family Church

  1490. exists

  1491. to glorify God

  1492. by experiencing

  1493. proclaiming

  1494. and displaying

  1495. the supremacy

  1496. of Jesus Christ

  1497. in all things

  1498. to all peoples

  1499. is Jesus Christ

  1500. supreme

  1501. is Jesus Christ

  1502. the son of God

  1503. made manifest

1504. the one who is being

  1505. exalted

  1506. at God's right hand

  1507. even now

  1508. as we speak

  1509. if he is this

  1510. then he is certainly

  1511. supreme

  1512. to everything else

  1513. in this world

  1514. the father himself

  1515. has exalted

  1516. the son

  1517. the spirit

  1518. exists

  1519. to exalt

  1520. the son

  1521. he is supreme

  1522. to all

  1523. things

  1524. so is Christ

  1525. supreme

  1526. in your

  1527. experience

  1528. in all things

  1529. do you experience

  1530. Christ to be supreme

  1531. in all things

  1532. has this truth

  1533. worked down into you

  1534. in such a way

  1535. that you can say

  1536. in every moment

  1537. of every day

  1538. Christ is supreme

  1539. Christ is better

  1540. than

  1541. anything else

  1542. that I might

  1543. experience

  1544. in this world

  1545. the clear answer

  1546. to that is no

  1547. and the clear answer

  1548. to that should be

  1549. yes

  1550. is Christ supreme

  1551. in your proclamation

  1552. in all things

  1553. what do you talk

  1554. about

  1555. what do you spend

  1556. your days

  1557. gabbing on about

  1558. right

  1559. what occupies

  1560. your words

  1561. so I'll tell you

  1562. this

  1563. you talk about

  1564. the things you love

  1565. think over this

  1566. past week

  1567. the things you

  1568. spent your time

  1569. talking about

  1570. what did you

  1571. talk about

  1572. this week

  1573. not that we

  1574. don't ever

  1575. talk about

  1576. anything else

  1577. in this world

  1578. right

  1579. but is the

  1580. personal work

  1581. of Jesus Christ

  1582. the predominant

  1583. thing that you

  1584. talked about

  1585. this past week

  1586. I'm afraid

  1587. that the

  1588. resounding

  1589. answer to that

  1590. would be no

  1591. for most of us

  1592. but the clear

  1593. answer should be

  1594. yes

  1595. Jesus Christ

  1596. is supreme

  1597. and therefore

  1598. I talk about

  1599. him

  1600. is Christ

  1601. supreme

  1602. in your

  1603. display

  1604. in all things

  1605. do you live

  1606. like you have

  1607. a hope

  1608. beyond this

  1609. world

  1610. right

  1611. do you live

  1612. in such a way

  1613. that people see

  1614. you and think

  1615. you're odd

  1616. this person is

  1617. different

  1618. even in this

  1619. Christian culture

  1620. that we live in

  1621. we should be

  1622. set apart

  1623. not that we

  1624. want to be

  1625. set apart

  1626. for the sake

  1627. of being

  1628. set apart

  1629. right

  1630. sometimes you

  1631. can run away

  1632. from things

  1633. and not ever

  1634. know what

  1635. you're running

  1636. to

  1637. right

  1638. but a lot

  1639. of Christians

  1640. don't look

  1641. any different

  1642. from this

  1643. world

  1644. they give

  1645. no really

  1646. clear evidence

  1647. that they

  1648. have any

  1649. hope at all

  1650. beyond the

  1651. normal things

  1652. of this

  1653. world

  1654. right

  1655. how do we

  1656. arrange our

  1657. lives

  1658. this means

  1659. things about

  1660. the way we

  1661. dress

  1662. this means

  1663. things about

  1664. what we

  1665. drive

  1666. what kind

  1667. of professions

  1668. we pursue

  1669. this means

  1670. things about

  1671. the quality

  1672. of our

  1673. study

  1674. this means

  1675. things about

  1676. the quality

  1677. of our

  1678. work

  1679. this means

  1680. things about

  1681. how we

  1682. take care of

  1683. our homes

  1684. and what we

  1685. use our

  1686. homes for

  1687. right

  1688. it means

  1689. things for

  1690. every aspect

  1691. of our

  1692. living

  1693. and I know

  1694. this is a

  1695. high and

  1696. lofty concept

  1697. and it's so

  1698. difficult to

  1699. take this and

  1700. play it out

  1701. into every

  1702. situation in

  1703. your life

  1704. but you've

  1705. got to start

  1706. taking this

  1707. reality

  1708. and begin

  1709. filtering who

  1710. you are

  1711. through it

  1712. is Christ

  1713. supreme

  1714. in everything

  1715. in your life

  1716. right

  1717. if he's not

  1718. when you're not

  1719. experiencing them

  1720. to be that

  1721. then you

  1722. have failed

  1723. to believe

  1724. in that

  1725. moment

  1726. the reality

  1727. of the

  1728. gospel

  1729. and don't

  1730. hear me

  1731. saying that

  1732. you can

  1733. you can

  1734. wax and

  1735. wane

  1736. that you

  1737. can

  1738. unbelieve

  1739. the gospel

  1740. right

  1741. if you

  1742. are gods

  1743. you are

  1744. gods

  1745. you are

  1746. secure

  1747. in his

  1748. hand

  1749. and I

  1750. have

  1751. confidence

  1752. that you

  1753. will

  1754. progress

  1755. until the

  1756. end

  1757. in your

  1758. faith

  1759. full

  1760. confidence

  1761. in that

  1762. praise

  1763. god

  1764. for our

  1765. soteriology

  1766. the doctrines

  1767. around

  1768. salvation

  1769. that we

  1770. believe

  1771. around

  1772. here

  1773. the bible

  1774. clearly

  1775. teaches

  1776. !

  1777. this

  1778. to

  1779. us

  1780. you're

  1781. secure

  1782. in that

  1783. way

  1784. but in

  1785. those

  1786. moments

  1787. you

  1788. forget

  1789. the

  1790. riches

  1791. of that

  1792. truth

  1793. for your

  1794. life

  1795. in those

  1796. moments

  1797. right

  1798. you fail

  1799. to believe

  1800. it

  1801. at that

  1802. time

  1803. right

  1804. because

  1805. belief

  1806. really

  1807. believing

  1808. that Jesus

  1809. is who

  1810. he said

  1811. he is

  1812. will have

  1813. effect

  1814. it will

  1815. change

  1816. the way

  1817. we live

  1818. it will

  1819. give us

  1820. power

  1821. to deny

  1822. sin

  1823. it will

  1824. give us

  1825. power

  1826. to live

  1827. righteous

  1828. lives

  1829. right

  1830. these

  1831. realities

  1832. of the

  1833. gospel

  1834. we must

  1835. filter

  1836. everything

  1837. through it

  1838. so this

  1839. is the

  1840. storm

  1841. after the

  1842. calm

  1843. and I

  1844. hope

  1845. for everyone

  1846. in here

  1847. I maybe

  1848. shook you

  1849. up a bit

  1850. but I

  1851. hope that

  1852. you find

  1853. a calmness

  1854. in your

  1855. confidence

  1856. in your

  1857. faith in

  1858. Christ

  1859. this morning

  1860. if you

  1861. don't

  1862. it's time

  1863. to wake

  1864. Jesus up

  1865. that he

  1866. might

  1867. calm

  1868. that

  1869. storm

  1870. for you

  1871. let's

  1872. pray

  1873. together
