  1. All right, please take your copy of God's Word and turn to the book of 1 Timothy, chapter 2.

    1 Timothy 2 chapter mention

  2. Once again, if you do pay attention to the bulletin, you notice in the liturgy, we are not going to be in the book of Mark.

  3. But I will remind you that that's where we're at. We've been preaching together through the book of Mark.

  4. We've come to the end of chapter 4.

  5. And as a general habit, this is what we find to be the healthiest thing,

  6. is to go through the Scriptures verse by verse, and that is our work right now in Mark.

  7. However, we can become overly dogmatic about that kind of thing and make that somehow an idol.

  8. And it's important at times to stop and address some things topically.

  9. Now, just to be clear, for those of you who may not fully wrap your mind around what good expositional preaching is all about,

  10. which I don't know that I would qualify myself as a good expositional preacher,

  11. but expositional preaching takes, as its main point, the main point of the scriptural text.

  12. We don't do things with the Scriptures to fit into our own opinion, our own methodologies,

  13. but we simply look at what the Scriptures have to say about something.

  14. And as we're moving verse by verse through Mark, we're looking at the life of Christ

  15. and what it would say to us and to our living.

  16. But we can also look at a topic and say, what does the Scripture have to say about this particular topic?

  17. And so, this morning, I'm not very apt to do this, but this morning's sermon title is

  18. Modesty of the Heart.

  19. We'll begin reading in 1 Timothy 2, verse 8.

    1 Timothy 2:8

  20. Paul writes,

  21. Join me in prayer.

  22. Father, we do praise you for this day, and I praise you for all of the souls that are sitting here together in this room.

  23. We recognize that they came here today by your providential word.

  24. And therefore, Lord, you have something for us, each of us, in this day,

  25. some way in which you intend to conform us in greater degrees to the image of your Son.

  26. And so, I pray that you will bless the reading and the preaching of your word to that end.

  27. Father, we need you for this.

  28. I need you to be powerful in my preaching.

  29. Everyone needs for you to be powerful in our hearing.

  30. That by your Spirit, you will apply these truths to our hearts.

  31. That you will make us into new creations.

  32. And we pray this in Christ's precious, holy, high, lifted name.

  33. Amen.

  34. So, this morning we're going to talk about modesty.

  35. And as you may assume, that's because it's beginning to warm up a little bit out there.

  36. And as we have a church that has so many young people,

  37. this is a particular issue that young people need to hear.

  38. Modesty ultimately is an issue of the heart.

  39. As all behavior is, it's very easy and we're often likely to talk about behavior modification.

  40. Tell you how it is you should live.

  41. And give you some practical steps for what that might look like.

  42. And that is such a temptation here.

  43. I so desperately want to make a list.

  44. And a bunch of rules.

  45. And tell you ladies what it looks like to be modest.

  46. Say, do that.

  47. And if you don't, I don't know.

  48. There will be some consequence.

  49. Right?

  50. We're going to discipline you some way.

  51. Right?

  52. But that doesn't really get at the core of the issue.

  53. And that is, it is an issue of the heart.

  54. In Ezekiel chapter 36, beginning of verse 26, God says,

    Ezekiel 36 chapter mention

  55. And I will give you a new heart and a new spirit I will put within you.

  56. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.

  57. And I will put my spirit within you and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules.

  58. So as we talk this morning about modesty and what that looks like, we must remember that Paul was writing to Timothy,

  59. who was an elder of Christian people, who was leading believers and was leading women who had hearts that were changed.

  60. So the condition of their heart should be, necessitates some outward expression.

  61. An appropriate outward expression.

  62. An outward expression that honors the gospel of Jesus Christ rather than profanes it.

  63. An outward expression that ordains, that lays good works on the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  64. Ephesians 2.10, Paul says,

  65. Now, this is a little bit, potentially, a little bit of a touchy topic.

  66. And I hope that most of you ladies in the room have already sighed a big sigh of relief.

  67. And have said, yes, a sermon on modesty.

  68. That is great.

  69. That is something that our culture needs to hear.

  70. I hope that none of you have gotten really uptight and are feeling uncomfortable this morning.

  71. I want to speak to you plainly this morning.

  72. And I want to speak to you pastorally as one who loves you and cares about you.

  73. Cares about what's going on in your life and about the things that you're doing that may bring judgment on you one day.

  74. It's a great fear of mine.

  75. And it has been all week as I've been considering exactly how to say some things.

  76. And what should and what shouldn't be said.

  77. It's a great fear of mine to embarrass any of you.

  78. I think.

  79. I want to at least believe that anyone here who doesn't quite understand what it means to be modest has done so out of ignorance.

  80. And I don't want to embarrass you because you're ignorant.

  81. If I say something this morning that applies to you and makes you want to sink in your seat and sneak out of here as soon as we get back up to sing, please don't.

  82. You have a past this morning.

  83. We will assume ignorance on your part this morning.

  84. And never again from here on out.

  85. But this morning, you can be ignorant of why it is you should be modest and how it is that that serves the church.

  86. So please don't let me embarrass you.

  87. I really, really, really don't want to do that.

  88. Sam has coined a little phrase for me and she calls it my stomp hug method.

  89. Where I step on people's toes and I give them a quick hug before they can get away.

  90. Please hear me now hugging you.

  91. Please hear me now hugging you.

  92. Not bringing condemnation down on you.

  93. If I thought anybody in this room intentionally dressed immodestly, was intentionally trying to cause the men in our church to sin, was really working at that, I would have no problem laying it out for you.

  94. But I don't think that's the case in our church.

  95. Ladies, let me encourage you to apply this truth to your own heart.

  96. To not sit in judgment of other people around you, but to apply this truth to your own heart.

  97. And then in turn, in speaking the truth in love, to apply it to the hearts of others.

  98. Let me caution you against legalism.

  99. Legalism.

  100. Proper Christian encouragement says to people, I want you to look more like Christ.

  101. Legalism says, I want you to look more like me.

  102. Don't do that.

  103. Don't fall into that trap this morning as we talk about these very practical matters.

  104. Now ladies, as I speak to you and potentially in your ignorance, I say to you that there is not a man in this world.

  105. And certainly not a man in this room that does not battle with the temptation of the flesh of sexual lust.

  106. Not a man in this world that doesn't deal with that temptation.

  107. Now there are men in this world that fight quite well against it.

  108. And I don't mean this as a huge boast to myself, but I have been fighting that battle for two decades now.

  109. A little over two decades now.

  110. I have been battling against sexual sin in my life.

  111. And I find massive victory in this by the grace of God.

  112. Massive amounts of victory in this.

  113. But as you get to know me, you'll learn that I hate the beach.

  114. I hate the beach.

  115. To me, to go to a place that's hot, that has no sun, makes no, I mean no shade, makes no sense.

  116. A place where I have to manufacture my own shade or buy it at Walmart makes no sense to me.

  117. I try not to be, but I'm a bit of a control freak.

  118. And I cannot control where sand goes when I'm at the beach.

  119. And it just absolutely drives me crazy.

  120. But let me tell you the primary reason I do not like going to the beach.

  121. It's not relaxing to my soul to go to the beach.

  122. I don't get to rest when I go to the beach.

  123. I've got to be on my game when I go to the beach.

  124. I've got to arm up.

  125. And I've got armor.

  126. And I know how to wield my sword.

  127. I know how to fight the fight.

  128. I just don't want to fight when I'm on vacation.

  129. I want to go someplace where I can relax and be calm a little bit.

  130. I don't want to get up in the morning and go, it's battle time.

  131. Let's go play with the kids at the beach.

  132. I don't want to.

  133. Somebody suggested to me this week, they said,

  134. couldn't you just bury your head in a book when you're at the beach?

  135. And I said, not with toddlers.

  136. This last year, Judah wanted to walk up to people laying down on the beach and say, hi.

  137. And you had to go, come on, Judah.

  138. Come with me.

  139. It doesn't quite work that way.

  140. Ladies, you need to understand that this is something that all men battle with.

  141. And we live in a culture that is highly sexualized.

  142. Highly.

  143. It is everywhere.

  144. Men are asking most of the time for these things to be in front of them,

  145. for these images to be presented to them.

  146. It's in magazines.

  147. It's in our Facebook feeds.

  148. I can't believe some of the advertisements that are showing on Facebook now.

  149. I may just have to stop using it altogether because it's just horrible.

  150. The shows that we watch, the casual nature of sex and the presentation of women in our culture

  151. is there all the time.

  152. You don't want to be a part of that problem.

  153. Now hear me clearly.

  154. Secondly, I am not this morning making men's sexual sin your fault.

  155. Please, please hear that.

  156. I'm not going to say it to you over and over again throughout this sermon.

  157. It is not your fault.

  158. Men have their own deal.

  159. They have to deal with their own deal.

  160. They will be held accountable for their own sin.

  161. However, you could be sinning and contributing to that factor.

  162. If I were single and had a roommate who was an alcoholic,

  163. and I always had the fridge stocked full of cold beer,

  164. and had a liquor cabinet full,

  165. and offered to him on every occasion a drink,

  166. would I not be somehow accountable for his sin when he fell back into his alcoholism?

  167. Certainly, that would be true.

  168. And so there's a negative feedback loop that we find in our society.

  169. Men struggle with this.

  170. Women want to be accepted.

  171. This is big picture.

  172. Culturally, women want to be accepted.

  173. So they dress the way they perceive men want them to dress,

  174. which causes men to sin,

  175. which causes them to desire that,

  176. which is this bad negative feedback loop.

  177. And men, we really need to be the ones that are responsible

  178. for getting that loop going the opposite way.

  179. We need to be the ones saying to women,

  180. I don't want to be attracted to you for that.

  181. I want to be attracted to you for your mind,

  182. and your heart, and your actions.

  183. We need to be saying that to women.

  184. We need to be saying it to them verbally.

  185. We need to be saying it to them practically.

  186. We need to be finding ways of showing them

  187. that we don't want to see them dress immodestly.

  188. Like, we've got to be working at that.

  189. But ladies, help us do that.

  190. Be part of that process of getting that feedback loop

  191. to be a positive feedback loop,

  192. where we are growing together in grace.

  193. I want to read to you a short testimony

  194. of a young guy in our church

  195. that most of you love and respect,

  196. a godly young man,

  197. to just give you some idea

  198. of what young people are dealing with these days.

  199. He wrote,

  200. When I walk on the college campus,

  201. I must confess as a man

  202. that each and every day is a battle.

  203. If I do not spend sufficient time in prayer

  204. and meditation on the word of God,

  205. I find that I have already lost this battle,

  206. the battle of lust.

  207. I am so thankful that my father is faithful

  208. to provide the grace to stand in purity

  209. and to keep my heart from wandering from him.

  210. I am truly thankful that he has created me

  211. to be a man attracted to women.

  212. However, when walking the college campus,

  213. I enter into a spiritual war zone,

  214. especially when the weather is warm.

  215. I must constantly be on guard,

  216. using every weapon at my disposal

  217. to survive in the battle for purity.

  218. Scripture memory, prayer, and music

  219. aid me greatly.

  220. I try to bounce my eyes

  221. as not to gaze at immodestly dressed women,

  222. yet it seems nearly impossible

  223. to heed the apostles' exhortation

  224. to flee sexual immorality

  225. and youthful lusts

  226. when around every corner

  227. I find the same temptation.

  228. There are certain days

  229. I know my only option

  230. is to look down at the ground.

  231. When I see a girl immodestly dressed,

  232. my heart breaks for her.

  233. Little does she know

  234. that in a campus setting,

  235. she probably will be devoured

  236. in the hearts and minds of many men.

  237. Then again, perhaps she is aware.

  238. I honestly don't know.

  239. I truly think the majority of women

  240. have no idea how serious

  241. that battle against lust is

  242. for every man, young and old.

  243. It never, ever stops seeking

  244. to turn us aside,

  245. to draw us into its paths,

  246. to count us amongst its victims,

  247. to drag us down

  248. to the chambers of death.

  249. For the most part,

  250. the church is a sanctuary

  251. from this battle against lust.

  252. Yet today, the struggle

  253. is slowly becoming

  254. just as hard

  255. in the congregation

  256. of God's people.

  257. The manner in which

  258. some women dress at church

  259. can cause major distractions

  260. for a man.

  261. I would dare say

  262. that most girls

  263. are ignorant concerning dress,

  264. but some are not.

  265. I plead with you

  266. to embrace the truth

  267. that you are a woman

  268. created in the image of God

  269. and beautiful apart

  270. from what this world

  271. would make of you.

  272. Though my sin is my own

  273. and I will be held

  274. accountable to God for it,

  275. I plead with women,

  276. especially sisters in Christ,

  277. to choose to aid their brothers

  278. in this unending battle.

  279. For the godly women

  280. who refuse to dress

  281. according to the pattern

  282. of this world,

  283. a thousand thank yous.

  284. You have chosen to follow

  285. in the beauty,

  286. honor,

  287. and dignity

  288. of Sarah,

  289. Ruth,

  290. and Esther.

  291. You have considered

  292. serving,

  293. caring,

  294. and loving your brothers

  295. of higher value

  296. than what this wretched world

  297. thinks of you.

  298. You are the truly attractive women

  299. in the eyes of a godly man,

  300. and I am forever grateful for you.

  301. Lastly,

  302. I think it is right

  303. to ask the forgiveness

  304. on behalf of all men,

  305. for we have failed

  306. to treat you

  307. with the honor

  308. and respect you deserve

  309. as those created

  310. in the likeness

  311. of our wonderful Creator.

  312. The result has been

  313. you dressing in a way

  314. which appeals to the eyes

  315. of sinful,

  316. depraved men.

  317. Change must start

  318. with men

  319. loving you

  320. and treating you

  321. with the dignity

  322. you deserve.

  323. Only then will your dress

  324. reflect your love

  325. and care for you

  326. with sincerity,

  327. your brother in Christ.

  328. This is a very common issue.

  329. Now,

  330. to be very clear,

  331. if all of you ladies

  332. in this church

  333. got it just right,

  334. and many of you do,

  335. to be sure,

  336. men are still going to deal

  337. with this temptation.

  338. It's still going to be

  339. on our college campus.

  340. There's no doubt about it.

  341. I was there the other day

  342. visiting with some students,

  343. and I'll address

  344. a particular fashion

  345. that's come about

  346. and was just shocked.

  347. Like,

  348. oh,

  349. poor guys.

  350. Winter used to be so safe.

  351. It used to be so easy

  352. in the wintertime.

  353. It's not really the case

  354. anymore

  355. on our college campuses.

  356. So,

  357. it's going to exist,

  358. but you do not

  359. want to be a contributor

  360. to the issue.

  361. You want to be a help to it.

  362. You want to be

  363. a service

  364. to men.

  365. Ladies,

  366. you must know,

  367. as I say,

  368. that all of the men

  369. in this room

  370. deal with this,

  371. that so many of them

  372. deal with it so well.

  373. I know a lot of the young men

  374. in this room

  375. very well,

  376. and they fight,

  377. and they fight well.

  378. They really,

  379. really want to be pure

  380. in everything that they do.

  381. They want to relate

  382. to you appropriately,

  383. so please,

  384. please help them.

  385. So,

  386. back in our text,

  387. we see,

  388. beginning there

  389. in verse 9,

  390. that women should

  391. adorn themselves

  392. in respectable apparel

  393. with modesty

  394. and self-control.

  395. And modesty

  396. is an interesting word

  397. we use in English

  398. that in the Greek

  399. has a bit more meaning

  400. to it.

  401. It carries the idea

  402. of bashfulness,

  403. right?

  404. That you actually

  405. would feel

  406. that it's inappropriate

  407. to expose yourself

  408. to men,

  409. right?

  410. But it's a bashfulness

  411. that has a regard

  412. to others,

  413. right?

  414. That cares about

  415. others seeing you

  416. in a particular state.

  417. The truth of it is,

  418. you can dress however

  419. you want to

  420. when you're by yourself.

  421. I don't care.

  422. When you're all by room,

  423. in your room,

  424. all alone,

  425. by yourself,

  426. it really doesn't matter.

  427. But when you go out

  428. into the world,

  429. you must consider

  430. how it is that other

  431. people are looking

  432. at you.

  433. And ladies,

  434. I know you have

  435. a culture that feeds

  436. attention for the way

  437. that you look,

  438. right?

  439. And you guys are all

  440. beautiful girls,

  441. especially the young ones

  442. amongst you.

  443. You're young,

  444. which is what our

  445. culture worships,

  446. right?

  447. You have the ability

  448. to wear scanty clothes,

  449. to not be modest.

  450. But is that really

  451. the attention

  452. that you want?

  453. Is that really

  454. the attention

  455. that you want?

  456. If in your heart

  457. you say yes,

  458. then we have so many

  459. things to talk about.

  460. Let me say to you,

  461. that is not the attention

  462. that you want.

  463. You do not want

  464. the type of attention

  465. that is fleeting,

  466. right?

  467. That objectifies you.

  468. You want people

  469. to care about

  470. who you are

  471. as a person,

  472. to look at you

  473. in the eyes.

  474. What would be my

  475. encouragement to you

  476. is to dress in such

  477. a way that people

  478. want to look at you

  479. in the face.

  480. They want to look at you

  481. in the eyes

  482. when they're talking

  483. to you.

  484. So you're to be

  485. dressed appropriately

  486. with modesty

  487. and with self-control.

  488. And self-control here

  489. just simply means

  490. soundness of mind.

  491. Be rational about this.

  492. Think about what

  493. you're wearing.

  494. There's a particular

  495. type of bug

  496. called a

  497. processionary

  498. caterpillar.

  499. We talked about

  500. this in a community

  501. group.

  502. I thought it was a beetle.

  503. It's a caterpillar.

  504. A processionary

  505. caterpillar.

  506. And this caterpillar

  507. will follow another

  508. processionary caterpillar

  509. to food.

  510. And you can actually

  511. get them to work

  512. in a circle

  513. where they get

  514. head to tail,

  515. head to tail,

  516. head to tail,

  517. and you can work

  518. them around in a circle.

  519. And they will go

  520. around and around

  521. and around and around

  522. in a circle

  523. looking for food,

  524. following the person

  525. in front of them

  526. for food until they die.

  527. Don't be a

  528. processionary

  529. caterpillar.

  530. Operate with

  531. soundness of mind.

  532. Lift your head up.

  533. Look around you.

  534. Don't let this

  535. culture lull you

  536. to sleep and tell

  537. you what's appropriate.

  538. But look to the

  539. scriptures.

  540. Look to the church

  541. and ask them

  542. what is appropriate.

  543. Function with

  544. modesty

  545. and with

  546. self-control.

  547. As I said to you

  548. before,

  549. I don't want to

  550. embarrass anybody.

  551. I don't want to

  552. offend anybody

  553. this morning.

  554. So I'm going to

  555. let the scriptures

  556. do that for you.

  557. Proverbs 11,

  558. 22.

  559. I absolutely

  560. love this

  561. proverb.

  562. Maybe even a

  563. little less for its

  564. application and just

  565. for its brilliance.

  566. Proverbs 11,

  567. 22 says,

  568. Like a gold ring

  569. in a pig's

  570. snout is a

  571. beautiful woman

  572. without discretion.

  573. Like a gold ring

  574. in a pig's

  575. snout is a

  576. beautiful woman

  577. without discretion.

  578. The gold ring

  579. here is

  580. the beautiful

  581. woman.

  582. The gold ring

  583. is a beautiful

  584. woman.

  585. It's something

  586. to be treasured.

  587. It's something

  588. of great value.

  589. And the

  590. contrast here

  591. is that

  592. this type of

  593. thing should

  594. not belong

  595. in a pig's

  596. snout.

  597. It does

  598. not belong

  599. there.

  600. So the

  601. implication is

  602. that a

  603. beautiful woman

  604. necessarily

  605. should operate

  606. with discretion.

  607. The pig's

  608. snout is

  609. the lack

  610. of discretion.

  611. See that

  612. there.

  613. And pigs

  614. in this day

  615. were not

  616. in any way

  617. attractive.

  618. Some of you

  619. might have

  620. thought,

  621. Oh,

  622. but pot-bellied

  623. pigs are so

  624. incredibly cute

  625. and adorable.

  626. Now,

  627. these would have

  628. been like

  629. our modern

  630. hogs,

  631. the kind of

  632. hogs that

  633. are down

  634. south just

  635. ravaging farms

  636. and you can

  637. kill them all

  638. year long

  639. and you want

  640. to and they're

  641. hairy and they're

  642. disgusting.

  643. They're pretty

  644. good eating,

  645. but this type

  646. of a hog is

  647. what would have

  648. existed here.

  649. Remember that

  650. the Hebrew people

  651. didn't eat pigs

  652. and pigs

  653. would be out

  654. at the edge

  655. of town

  656. where refuse

  657. was dumped

  658. and they would

  659. go through

  660. the refuse.

  661. These were

  662. not attractive

  663. animals.

  664. This is not

  665. where a beautiful

  666. woman should

  667. reside.

  668. It should not

  669. be as a gold

  670. ring in a

  671. pig's snout

  672. at all.

  673. It does not

  674. belong there.

  675. Now,

  676. the exhortation

  677. that he continues

  678. with is that

  679. women should be

  680. adorned in

  681. respectable apparel

  682. with modest

  683. self-control,

  684. not with

  685. braided hair

  686. and gold

  687. or pearls

  688. or costly

  689. attire.

  690. Now,

  691. we could get

  692. ourselves into

  693. a little bit

  694. of trouble

  695. with this,

  696. can't we?

  697. And I am

  698. one who

  699. takes the

  700. word of God

  701. as the word

  702. of God

  703. and I take

  704. the word of

  705. God literally

  706. in its literary

  707. forms.

  708. And so we

  709. have to wrestle

  710. with this a

  711. little bit.

  712. What does

  713. this mean

  714. exactly to

  715. us and to

  716. our culture?

  717. Should we

  718. take it just

  719. at its face

  720. value and

  721. say,

  722. ladies,

  723. do not

  724. braid your

  725. hair.

  726. It's not

  727. appropriate for

  728. you to

  729. braid your

  730. hair.

  731. It's not

  732. appropriate for

  733. you to wear

  734. gold or

  735. pearls or

  736. costly attire.

  737. I don't know

  738. how we would

  739. define that

  740. exactly.

  741. What I say to

  742. you is no.

  743. It's important

  744. for us to

  745. understand the

  746. culture that

  747. was being

  748. spoken to here

  749. and then pull

  750. the reality

  751. out for us.

  752. What is being

  753. taught to us?

  754. Paul is saying

  755. to Timothy

  756. that women

  757. should not

  758. ever improve

  759. the way they

  760. look,

  761. that they

  762. should never

  763. do any

  764. dressing up

  765. at all.

  766. I would say

  767. to you,

  768. no.

  769. But what you

  770. need to

  771. understand is

  772. that the

  773. way in which

  774. these particular

  775. characteristics

  776. were true

  777. at best

  778. of the

  779. wealthy,

  780. these were

  781. things that

  782. wealthy would

  783. have done,

  784. at worst

  785. of prostitutes.

  786. So as the

  787. early church

  788. was finding

  789. some liberty

  790. in their

  791. faith in

  792. Christ,

  793. they were

  794. beginning to

  795. do some

  796. things that

  797. they would

  798. never have

  799. done previously

  800. as respected

  801. parts of the

  802. community,

  803. as Jewish

  804. adherents,

  805. or as

  806. just well-to-do,

  807. normal,

  808. good,

  809. Gentile people.

  810. They were

  811. beginning to

  812. say,

  813. well,

  814. we like the

  815. way the

  816. pretty women

  817. dress.

  818. We want to

  819. look like

  820. them.

  821. We want to

  822. put on the

  823. airs that

  824. we are

  825. these

  826. women,

  827. whether that

  828. would be

  829. the wealthy

  830. or those

  831. whom the

  832. whole culture

  833. looked at

  834. as the

  835. epitome of

  836. sexual desire.

  837. And that's

  838. what they

  839. were doing.

  840. That's what

  841. the instruction

  842. is against,

  843. is to be

  844. sure that

  845. when people

  846. see your

  847. apparel,

  848. they see

  849. godliness,

  850. not the

  851. things of

  852. the world.

  853. Now,

  854. specifically,

  855. we're speaking

  856. about modesty,

  857. but ladies,

  858. this is going

  859. to affect a

  860. lot of other

  861. things that

  862. you do

  863. and ways

  864. that you

  865. think.

  866. Now,

  867. I'm not

  868. going to be

  869. legalistic at

  870. this point.

  871. I could come

  872. up with

  873. some for

  874. you,

  875. but I'm

  876. just not.

  877. I'm tempted

  878. to,

  879. but I'm

  880. just not.

  881. I'm not

  882. going to

  883. say anything.

  884. I'm going

  885. to let

  886. this work

  887. in your

  888. own heart.

  889. How is

  890. it that

  891. you make

  892. yourself up

  893. to look

  894. more like

  895. the world

  896. and your

  897. motivation in

  898. that,

  899. the heart

  900. in it all,

  901. is to

  902. not look

  903. godly?

  904. Our culture

  905. does a lot

  906. of things

  907. to epitomize

  908. particular types

  909. of people,

  910. like celebrity.

  911. You must

  912. think about

  913. this.

  914. Peter wrote

  915. in 1 Peter 3,

  916. 3 and 4,

  917. do not let your

  918. adorning be

  919. external,

  920. the braiding

  921. of hair,

  922. and the putting

  923. on of gold

  924. jewelry,

  925. or the clothing

  926. you wear.

  927. See the same

  928. cultural issue

  929. happening there.

  930. But let your

  931. adorning be

  932. the hidden

  933. person of the

  934. heart,

  935. with the

  936. imperishable

  937. beauty of a

  938. gentle and

  939. quiet spirit,

  940. which in

  941. God's sight

  942. is very

  943. precious.

  944. This is the

  945. way you

  946. should want

  947. to adorn

  948. yourself.

  949. With respectable

  950. apparel is

  951. the terminology

  952. used here.

  953. With respectable

  954. apparel.

  955. And you must

  956. think about

  957. what that

  958. looks like.

  959. What does

  960. respectable

  961. apparel look

  962. like?

  963. And again,

  964. it would be

  965. so tempting

  966. at this point.

  967. In fact,

  968. I found some

  969. great resources

  970. that were

  971. checklists for

  972. you.

  973. Most schools

  974. have dressings

  975. code.

  976. Most of you

  977. probably went

  978. to some

  979. kind of a

  980. high school

  981. that had a

  982. dress code

  983. of some

  984. sort.

  985. I'm just

  986. not willing

  987. to make

  988. laws where

  989. the Bible

  990. doesn't make

  991. laws.

  992. I'm just

  993. not willing

  994. to do it.

  995. However,

  996. we do need

  997. to address a

  998. few things to

  999. give you an

  1000. idea of what

  1001. I may be

  1002. talking about.

  1003. And here's

  1004. the part where

  1005. I'm really

  1006. worried to

  1007. embarrass you.

  1008. Don't be.

  1009. Please don't

  1010. be embarrassed.

  1011. You're ignorant

  1012. this morning.

  1013. Tights or

  1014. leggings,

  1015. whatever you

  1016. want to call

  1017. them, ladies

  1018. are not

  1019. pants.

  1020. Hug.

  1021. They're not

  1022. pants.

  1023. And if in

  1024. your mind the

  1025. natural progression

  1026. from the

  1027. tightness of

  1028. your jeans is

  1029. that you might

  1030. as well, then

  1031. your jeans are

  1032. too tight too.

  1033. Right?

  1034. If you can't

  1035. comfortably sit

  1036. down in your

  1037. pants, you

  1038. need to wear

  1039. bigger pants.

  1040. Ladies, bikinis.

  1041. How did that

  1042. become culturally

  1043. acceptable?

  1044. How is that

  1045. something that

  1046. it seems that

  1047. everyone does?

  1048. Even people who

  1049. from the world's

  1050. terms shouldn't

  1051. possibly ever

  1052. be seen in a

  1053. bikini, they

  1054. would not wear

  1055. anything else at

  1056. the beach.

  1057. It's bizarre that

  1058. the culture really

  1059. says that you get

  1060. within an hour of

  1061. the beach and your

  1062. brain turns off.

  1063. And you begin to

  1064. think entirely

  1065. differently.

  1066. Right?

  1067. Would any of you

  1068. ever walk into

  1069. this building in

  1070. your underwear?

  1071. No.

1072. Why is it okay in

  1073. a different context?

  1074. I don't understand.

  1075. I honestly do not

  1076. understand.

  1077. Right?

  1078. If it would be

  1079. normative to wear

  1080. something on top of

  1081. something that you're

  1082. wearing, you probably

  1083. should be wearing

  1084. something on top.

  1085. Tights would be an

  1086. example of that.

  1087. If it would be

  1088. normative to wear it

  1089. as an undergarment,

  1090. treat it as an

  1091. undergarment and wear

  1092. something else.

  1093. on top of it.

  1094. Ladies, Facebook is

  1095. a dangerous medium

  1096. both for you and

  1097. for men.

1098. When you go to the

  1099. beach and you make

  1100. your pose, your cute

  1101. little picture in your

  1102. bikini, you know it

1103. ends up on a place

  1104. where everyone can

  1105. see it.

  1106. And sometimes, more

  1107. often than not, when

  1108. they didn't choose to

  1109. see it.

  1110. Right?

1111. It shows up there in

  1112. the feed and that

  1113. image is imprinted in

  1114. a guy's mind and he's

1115. got to deal with it and

  1116. he's got to wrestle

  1117. with it.

1118. He's got to go to

  1119. battle because you

1120. thought it'd be cute to

  1121. post a picture like

  1122. that.

  1123. Or your friend did.

  1124. Right?

  1125. You need to really

  1126. think about what you

  1127. wear everywhere that you

  1128. go.

  1129. Now, clearly, also none

1130. of you would walk into

1131. this room in a modest

  1132. one-piece bathing suit.

1133. That would also be very

  1134. strange.

  1135. I think there is

  1136. appropriate swimwear

  1137. that you can wear.

  1138. And I would encourage

1139. you ladies to be the

  1140. unique ones amongst your

  1141. groups of friends that

  1142. finds the cute,

  1143. appropriate swimwear.

  1144. And there are companies

  1145. out there doing this

  1146. now.

  1147. Right?

1148. That you can be the

1149. most adorable one on the

  1150. beach and be very

  1151. covered.

  1152. Right?

  1153. And I would encourage

  1154. you to do that.

1155. You may not be able to

1156. keep up with the latest

1157. trend if you desire to be

  1158. godly.

1159. You may not be able to

1160. fit in with the crowd if

1161. you desire to be godly.

1162. Is this shocking to you?

  1163. That God has sanctified

1164. you, He's taken you, and

1165. He's set you apart from

1166. the world to serve Him and

1167. His ways, and you may not

1168. be able to fit in in every

  1169. way?

  1170. Right?

1171. That your pants may not be

  1172. as tight?

1173. That you may be the one on

1174. the beach in the one-piece?

  1175. The modest one-piece?

  1176. There are some horrible

  1177. one-pieces as well.

  1178. Right?

1179. Is this a surprise to you?

  1180. It shouldn't be.

  1181. It shouldn't be.

  1182. And it shouldn't be

  1183. heartbreaking to you.

1184. It shouldn't hurt you in

1185. any way whatsoever to say,

1186. I would gladly give up

  1187. that.

  1188. To serve my Lord?

  1189. No problem.

  1190. Right?

  1191. That's easy.

  1192. Right?

  1193. That is low cost.

  1194. Right?

1195. To be a servant of the

  1196. Most High God.

1197. He's called us to much

  1198. higher costs than that.

  1199. Right?

1200. He's called us to suffer

  1201. for His sake.

  1202. To potentially lay your

1203. life down for His sake.

1204. To be martyred one day?

  1205. Don't wrestle over

  1206. swimwear with Him.

  1207. Be modest.

  1208. Serve your brothers.

  1209. Right?

1210. How can you possibly know

  1211. what is and isn't

  1212. appropriate?

  1213. Right?

1214. Nathan, give us the list.

1215. Just give me the list.

1216. I'm not giving you the list.

1217. But what you can do

1218. is you can ask your fathers.

  1219. Many of you have

  1220. godly fathers.

1221. And even if they're not

  1222. godly fathers,

  1223. they probably know

1224. the way men's minds work.

1225. And you could say to your

  1226. dad,

  1227. Dad,

  1228. is this appropriate?

1229. The little ones do it.

1230. If I ever have daughters,

  1231. oh,

  1232. I can guarantee they're

  1233. going to get screened

1234. before they go out of the

  1235. house.

  1236. Right?

1237. And I'll also check the

  1238. backpack to make sure

  1239. there's nothing stuffed

1240. in the bottom of it.

  1241. Right?

1242. Ask your fathers and be

  1243. willing to take something

  1244. back.

  1245. Right?

1246. Go to the store and buy

  1247. something, bring it home,

1248. show it to your dad,

  1249. and go,

  1250. okay, dad,

  1251. I'll take it back.

1252. I will honor you in that

  1253. way because you're a man

  1254. and you understand men.

  1255. And I don't want to be

  1256. consumed in the minds

  1257. and hearts of men.

1258. Ask the women of your

  1259. church.

1260. If this is your church,

1261. we have many godly women

1262. in our church that dress

  1263. very modestly.

  1264. Do that.

  1265. Talk to those women.

  1266. Ask them,

  1267. is this appropriate?

  1268. I'm feeling a little on the

  1269. edge here.

  1270. What do you think?

  1271. Right?

  1272. Ladies who are married,

  1273. ask your husbands.

  1274. I,

1275. without ever talking to Sam

  1276. about it,

1277. Sam has always asked me

  1278. about things she just

  1279. wasn't sure about.

  1280. Is this alright?

1281. And you know what I'll tell

  1282. you,

1283. that I really appreciate her

  1284. because she,

1285. she really errs to the

  1286. side of caution.

1287. And more often than not,

1288. my response to that is,

  1289. yeah,

  1290. it's fine.

  1291. Like,

  1292. totally fine.

  1293. No big deal.

  1294. But on occasion,

  1295. I've said,

  1296. yeah,

  1297. I don't,

  1298. I wouldn't do it.

  1299. Right?

  1300. Ask.

  1301. Just ask.

  1302. It's such a simple

  1303. thing to do.

  1304. And when in doubt,

  1305. don't.

  1306. Just,

  1307. if you don't know,

  1308. you're standing in your

1309. dorm room and you just

  1310. don't know if it's

  1311. appropriate.

  1312. You don't know if it's

  1313. going to serve your

  1314. brothers.

  1315. Just don't.

  1316. Just don't.

  1317. Caring for them matters

1318. more than how cute you

  1319. might be.

  1320. Right?

  1321. Verse 10,

  1322. though,

  1323. is kind of the

  1324. continuation of the

  1325. beginning of 9.

  1326. Right?

1327. What is it that you're

  1328. to be adorned with?

  1329. Respectable apparel.

  1330. Verse 10,

1331. but with what is proper

  1332. for women who profess

  1333. godliness.

  1334. With good works.

  1335. So what should make

  1336. women attractive

  1337. to men?

  1338. Good works.

  1339. Guys,

  1340. that's the kind of

  1341. woman that you want.

  1342. Our cultural

  1343. definition of beauty,

  1344. so hear me carefully

  1345. here,

  1346. our cultural definition

  1347. of beauty,

  1348. we epitomize youth.

  1349. And guess what?

  1350. Your wives are going

  1351. to get old.

  1352. They're not going

  1353. to hold together

  1354. the way they held

  1355. together when they

  1356. were younger.

  1357. Speaking as a

  1358. spiritual man,

  1359. who loves my wife

  1360. for spiritual reasons,

  1361. she gets more

  1362. beautiful to me.

  1363. Right?

  1364. Physically and

  1365. spiritually,

  1366. she's increasing

  1367. in beauty

  1368. day by day.

  1369. But if you

  1370. epitomize

  1371. beauty the way

  1372. culture epitomizes

  1373. beauty,

  1374. you're going to be

  1375. disappointed one day.

  1376. Someday,

  1377. you'll wake up

  1378. to an older woman

  1379. who'll be laying

  1380. next to you

  1381. and you'll say,

  1382. that is not the

  1383. woman that I married,

  1384. if that is what

  1385. you care about.

1386. Do not care about that.

  1387. Look for women

  1388. who profess godliness

  1389. and adorn that

  1390. with good works.

  1391. Proverbs 31.30,

  1392. speaking of our

  1393. famous Proverbs 31 woman,

  1394. says,

  1395. Charm is deceitful

  1396. and beauty is vain,

  1397. passing,

  1398. fleeting,

  1399. but a woman who

  1400. fears the Lord

  1401. is to be praised.

  1402. Ladies,

  1403. this is the way

  1404. you want to orient

  1405. yourself.

  1406. If guys don't

  1407. like that in you,

  1408. then they're not

  1409. worth your time.

  1410. Right?

  1411. If you have to

  1412. show off any

  1413. part of yourself,

  1414. any part of yourself

  1415. physically to a guy

1416. for him to like you,

1417. kick him to the curb.

1418. And if you can't do it,

1419. call me and I'll come

1420. kick him to the curb

  1421. for you.

  1422. Right?

  1423. Not worth

  1424. your time.

  1425. You want a man

  1426. who is attracted

  1427. to godliness

  1428. as you should be

  1429. displaying godliness.

  1430. 1 Corinthians 10.31

  1431. says,

  1432. So whether you eat

  1433. or drink

  1434. or whatever you do,

  1435. do all

1436. to the glory of God.

  1437. This would include

  1438. the way

  1439. in which

  1440. we dress.

  1441. So it's important

  1442. that you see

  1443. that

  1444. part of the way

  1445. that you give

  1446. legitimacy

  1447. to the gospel message

  1448. is how you dress.

  1449. It includes

  1450. all so many things

  1451. about the way

1452. we function in our life.

  1453. We've been talking

  1454. about that in Mark

    Mark 4 chapter mention

  1455. chapter 4

  1456. as we've been preaching

  1457. through that

  1458. about not hiding

  1459. our light

  1460. under our bed

  1461. but putting up

  1462. on a lampstand

  1463. where it's meant

  1464. to be seen.

  1465. We've been talking

  1466. about how we should

  1467. be sowing seed

  1468. in the world.

  1469. This is the activity

  1470. that's fitting Christians.

  1471. We should be

  1472. functioning in this way

  1473. and that includes

  1474. the way

  1475. that you dress.

  1476. A really classic

  1477. example of this

  1478. is 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 9:19–23

  1479. chapter 9

  1480. verse 19-23.

  1481. Now hear me

  1482. we have great

  1483. liberty in Christ.

  1484. That's one of the

  1485. great blessings

  1486. is that we are

  1487. no longer

  1488. under law

  1489. but under the spirit.

  1490. So we have been

  1491. given access

  1492. we've been granted

  1493. permission

  1494. to do things

  1495. like eat pork

  1496. would be a very

  1497. simple example

  1498. of that.

  1499. We're allowed

  1500. to do

  1501. some things

  1502. not all things

  1503. but some things

  1504. we're allowed to do

  1505. we've been given

  1506. liberty in Christ

  1507. but you can practice

  1508. your liberty

  1509. for yourself

  1510. or for service

  1511. to the kingdom.

  1512. Let me give you

  1513. an example

  1514. in my life

  1515. I find it

  1516. perfectly

  1517. permissible

  1518. by the scriptures

  1519. to consume alcohol

  1520. not to become

  1521. drunk

  1522. but to drink

  1523. but because of

  1524. my position

  1525. and because of

  1526. the culture

  1527. we live in

  1528. this hyper

  1529. Christianity

  1530. fairly legalistic

  1531. culture

  1532. that we live in

  1533. I choose not to

  1534. and I am

  1535. practicing my

  1536. liberty

  1537. in choosing

  1538. not to

  1539. as in no way

  1540. profanes the gospel

  1541. Christ has set me

  1542. free

1543. I'm free to do it

  1544. but I'm also

1545. free to not do it

  1546. I would encourage

  1547. the same

  1548. for all of you

  1549. not a law

  1550. but think about

  1551. where you live

  1552. and what you do

  1553. and how it is

  1554. that you serve

  1555. the kingdom of God

  1556. I would never

  1557. want anybody

  1558. in our culture

1559. to not hear the gospel

  1560. from me

  1561. because they saw me

  1562. drink

  1563. it's just not worth

  1564. it to me

  1565. I don't care

  1566. 1 Corinthians 9

  1567. beginning of verse 19

  1568. Paul says

  1569. for though I am

  1570. free from all

  1571. I have made myself

  1572. a servant to all

  1573. that I might win

  1574. more of them

  1575. to the Jews

  1576. I became as a Jew

1577. in order to win Jews

1578. to those under the law

  1579. I became as one

  1580. under the law

  1581. though not being

  1582. myself under the law

  1583. that I might win

  1584. those under the law

1585. to those outside the law

  1586. I became as one

  1587. outside the law

  1588. not being outside

  1589. the law of God

  1590. but under the law

  1591. of Christ

  1592. that I might win

  1593. those outside the law

  1594. to the weak

  1595. I became weak

  1596. that I might win

  1597. the weak

  1598. I have become

  1599. all things

  1600. to all people

  1601. that by all means

  1602. I might save some

  1603. I do it all

  1604. for the sake

  1605. of the gospel

  1606. that I may share

  1607. with them

  1608. in its blessings

  1609. what do you

  1610. ultimately care about

  1611. in this world

  1612. right

  1613. do you care about

  1614. being cute

  1615. do you care about

  1616. fitting in

  1617. do you care about

  1618. attracting the wrong

  1619. type of attention

  1620. from guys

  1621. or do you care

  1622. about the kingdom

  1623. of God

  1624. do you care

  1625. about advancing

  1626. the good news

  1627. of Jesus Christ

  1628. and if you do

  1629. if your heart

  1630. is modest

  1631. it is going

  1632. to affect

  1633. the way you live

  1634. it's going to affect

  1635. the way

  1636. that you dress

  1637. Titus 2.10

  1638. Paul says

  1639. that good works

  1640. adorn

  1641. the doctrine

  1642. of God

  1643. our Savior

  1644. so how we dress

  1645. guys this applies

  1646. to you

  1647. my two year old

1648. and my three year old

  1649. outclass some of you

  1650. guys on Sunday mornings

  1651. might not want that

  1652. to be the case

  1653. right

  1654. this applies to guys

  1655. as well

  1656. how we dress

  1657. matters

  1658. because

  1659. it's about the gospel

  1660. everything that we do

  1661. should adorn

  1662. the doctrine

  1663. of God

  1664. our Savior

  1665. now ladies

1666. let me say to you again

  1667. it is the fault

  1668. of men

  1669. that men sin

  1670. sexually in their minds

  1671. it is their fault

1672. but it is your fault

  1673. when you feed it

  1674. you will be judged

  1675. one day

  1676. for your actions

1677. and it is my great prayer

  1678. for this church

1679. as an odd group of people

  1680. we're fluctuating constantly

  1681. college students

  1682. I love you

1683. you make our group weird

  1684. and that's okay

  1685. like I'm really content

  1686. being weird that way

1687. you come and you go

  1688. many of you

1689. and I look out at your faces

1690. I've never even seen you

  1691. before this morning

  1692. that's okay with me

  1693. I'm glad that you're here

1694. but we ebb and we flow

  1695. and we change

  1696. but I just don't care

  1697. what I want

  1698. Christ Family Church

  1699. to be known for

  1700. is being set apart

  1701. from this world

  1702. not for the sake

  1703. of being different

1704. we're not trying to be

1705. rebels against our church culture

  1706. that's not the intention

1707. of what we're trying to do

1708. but to be set apart

  1709. from the world

  1710. that we might magnify

  1711. Christ

  1712. in all

  1713. that we do

  1714. and that includes

  1715. the way

  1716. you ladies dress

  1717. let's pray together

  1718. let's pray together

  1719. let's pray together

  1720. let's pray together

  1721. let's pray together

  1722. let's pray together

  1723. let's pray together

  1724. let's pray together

  1725. let's pray together

  1726. let's pray together
