  1. So turn to Mark 6, page 1171 in your ESV Bibles.

  2. So last week, Nathan began chapter 6 and wonderful exposition of the beginning of chapter 6.

  3. ! I encourage you if you weren't here to go back and listen to that.

  4. It talks about how Jesus was rejected.

  5. He was in his own hometown as a prophet, and he was turned away by many who actually knew him,

  6. and he marveled at the people's unbelief.

  7. So we're going to pick up after that, but just for context's sake, we'll begin reading in verse 1, chapter 6.

  8. He went away from there and came to his hometown, and his disciples followed him.

  9. And on the Sabbath he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were astonished.

  10. Saying, Where did this man get these things?

  11. What is the wisdom given to him?

  12. How are such mighty works done by his hands?

  13. Is this not the carpenter, the son of Mary, and the brother of James, and Judas, and Simon?

  14. And are not his sisters here with us?

  15. And they took offense at him.

  16. And Jesus said to them, A prophet is not without honor, except in his hometown,

  17. and among his relatives, and in his own household.

  18. And he could not do, excuse me, no mighty works there,

  19. except he laid his hands on a few sick people and healed them.

  20. And he marveled because of their unbelief.

  21. And so last week, Nathan taught that the only thing that holds us back from entering into Christ,

  22. into the presence of God, is our own unbelief.

  23. And at the judgment day, it won't be, you won't have any other excuse other than,

  24. I did not come to Christ for salvation.

  25. You'll be condemned for your own sin and your own crime.

  26. And unbelief is, he gave several different marks of unbelief.

  27. I encourage you to go back and look at those.

  28. But Jesus marveled at their unbelief.

  29. And what they didn't need was another miracle, another sign for him to prove who he was.

  30. It really was just their wicked, unrepentant hearts that held them back,

  31. not because they needed another sign.

  32. And so picking up from there,

  33. we're going to start at the second part of verse 6.

  34. It says,

  35. He went among the villages teaching,

  36. and he called the twelve and began to send them out two by two,

  37. and gave them authority over the unclean spirits.

  38. And he charged them to take nothing for their journey except a staff,

  39. no bread, no bag, no money in their belts,

  40. but to wear their sandals and not to put on two tunics.

  41. And he said to them,

  42. Whenever you enter a house, stay there until you depart from there.

  43. And if any place will not receive you,

  44. and they will not listen to you when you leave,

  45. shake off the dust that is on your feet as a testimony against them.

  46. So they went on out and proclaimed that the people should repent.

  47. And they cast out many demons,

  48. and anointed with oil many who were sick and healed them.

  49. So just pray with me for a minute.

  50. Lord, we confess that we need you this morning.

  51. I need you desperately.

  52. Lord, this isn't a time just to talk about you

  53. and to act as if we know a lot about you.

  54. But Lord, you have brought us here this morning to hear your word.

  55. And I pray that it would have its desired effect,

  56. that hearts would be broken,

  57. that people would be convicted,

  58. and also that people would be greatly encouraged,

  59. greatly emboldened to go out and declare the message of the gospel.

  60. So we just ask that, humbly Lord, in Christ's name.

  61. Amen.

  62. So, that's where we're finding ourselves today.

  63. And so this is just chapter 6,

  64. and the disciples have walked with Jesus for not too long of a time at this point,

  65. but they've been following Him and observing how He does things.

  66. And like any good teacher, disciple-maker,

  67. Jesus is not just teaching them with His words, but His actions.

  68. And He is the embodiment of what He teaches.

  69. He is the message that He preaches, that Ryan didn't expect it to.

  70. So, He is the very embodiment of that message.

  71. He doesn't just have so-called Bible studies with His disciples

  72. and talks about Torah, talks about poetry, and talks about the prophets,

  73. and, all right, great, and then they don't do anything else.

  74. He says, guys, like, this is what the Scriptures mean.

  75. How does this work in our hearts?

  76. Now let's go and live this out.

  77. And He was like any good teacher or disciple-maker.

  78. He didn't just teach with His mouth, but He demonstrated.

  79. He demonstrated with His life what He expected them to learn.

  80. So, you know, with prayer, He was like, guys, this is what prayer is.

  81. Now let's do it.

  82. You know, it wasn't just a theory about prayer.

  83. They observed Him practice praying, communing with the Father.

  84. And thankfully, we actually get a glimpse into that in John 17,

  85. and to see what that was like, to see Jesus commune with the Father.

  86. But He talks about the Scriptures.

  87. At least 66 times the Old Testament is referenced just in Jesus' conversation with His disciples.

  88. So He constantly was teaching them, this is what this meant.

  89. And I really try to endeavor with the men I've discipled over the years,

  90. not always successfully, as most of them will tell you.

  91. I think five of them are here right now.

  92. Of course, they'd be like, yeah, He doesn't always do that.

  93. But I try to demonstrate with my life like what I expect them to learn and show them with my actions.

  94. And this is biblical.

  95. And I'll just read you a couple of examples from Paul.

  96. It was a vital part of discipleship.

  97. He would say things like this,

  98. Be imitators of me as I imitate Christ.

  99. 1 Corinthians 11.1

  100. And in Philippians 4, he says,

  101. Brothers, join in imitating me,

  102. and keep your eyes on those who walk according to the example you have in us.

  103. And then later on, in chapter 3, he says,

  104. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me,

  105. practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.

  106. So he was living this out.

  107. Demonstrating what he expected them to learn.

  108. And now up until this point in Mark,

  109. he's been teaching, he's been healing,

  110. he's been proclaiming the kingdom of God,

  111. casting out demons.

  112. They've seen him do this,

  113. drive away evil spirits,

  114. and help many people.

  115. Raise a young girl from the dead even.

  116. And they were engaged.

  117. They were seeing this.

  118. They saw him share with the masses.

  119. And they watched him.

  120. A book that I recommend,

  121. that I read at least once a year,

  122. that a man introduced me to a long time ago,

  123. it's called The Master's Plan of Evangelism by Robert Coleman.

  124. And I really try, again,

  125. I try to follow this example of what discipleship was.

  126. But he has a chapter called Demonstration,

  127. and it's basically how any good disciple maker will demonstrate what he expects his disciples to learn.

  128. And this is just a quote out of that on the Demonstration chapter.

  129. He said,

  130. What all the disciples had to teach them was a teacher who practiced with them what he expected them to learn.

  131. Evangelism was lived out before them in spirit and in technique.

  132. Watching him, they learned what it was all about.

  133. He led them to recognize the inerrant need in all classes of people,

  134. and the best methods of approaching them.

  135. They observed how he drew people to himself,

  136. and how he won their confidence and inspired their faith.

  137. How he opened to them the way of salvation,

  138. and called them to decision.

  139. In all types of situations,

  140. and among all kinds of people,

  141. rich, poor, healthy, and sick,

  142. friend and foe alike,

  143. the disciples watched.

  144. The master soul winner at work.

  145. It wasn't outlined on a blackboard.

  146. This is when blackboards were still around.

  147. It wasn't outlined on a blackboard of a stuffy classroom,

  148. nor written in a do-it-yourself manual.

  149. His method was so real and practical that it just came naturally.

  150. Okay, so,

  151. I've had several conversations with some people this last semester,

  152. and one of them asked me,

  153. you know, like,

  154. why do you think that,

  155. like, it's one of the reasons, at least,

  156. it's so hard for people to share their faith.

  157. Why is it?

  158. Why is it just, like, so weird?

  159. And I'll use the term of our generation awkward today.

  160. Like, why is it,

  161. why is it like that?

  162. And I think the only answer is,

  163. is because we've divorced evangelism from our actual lives.

  164. It's not a part of who we are anymore.

  165. It's something that we, like,

  166. we do,

  167. we live this way,

  168. and then now we, like,

  169. oh,

  170. now I've got to evangelize.

  171. It's like a,

  172. it's an event that we take place in,

  173. but it's not coming out of who we are on a daily basis around the people that we're around.

  174. So we've divorced it from our actual lives,

  175. and that's why it's weird for a lot of us.

  176. So,

  177. if you look at verse 7

  178. in our text here,

  179. it says,

  180. He called the twelve,

  181. and began to send them out,

  182. two by two,

  183. this is just introduction,

  184. two by two,

  185. and gave them authority

  186. over the unclean spirits.

  187. So,

  188. also,

  189. in this book I refer to you,

  190. he has a chapter called Delegation.

  191. So,

  192. demonstration,

  193. delegation.

  194. And,

  195. and this is another part of real discipleship that our,

  196. our Lord uses,

  197. delegation.

  198. So from day one,

  199. Jesus was preparing his disciples

  200. to take over his mission one day.

  201. He saw, like,

  202. that's where I need to take them.

  203. And he began, like,

  204. slowly taking them there.

  205. That would have been quite a work,

  206. knowing what we know about the disciples.

  207. And he gradually assigned work,

  208. duties,

  209. responsibilities,

  210. and they were faithful to that.

  211. It's kind of like,

  212. okay, boys,

  213. you've watched me do it.

  214. You see,

  215. you've observed me.

  216. Now it's,

  217. now it's your turn.

  218. Go out and do this.

  219. And that's real discipleship.

  220. And in this context,

  221. in Mark today,

  222. we see him delegating for the first time,

  223. preaching,

  224. and evangelism,

  225. and soul winning,

  226. accompanied by acts of compassion.

  227. So it says,

  228. like,

  229. he began to send them out.

  230. He commissioned each pair to go out

  231. as his representatives.

  232. And we see that he gave them authority.

  233. So,

  234. that's important.

  235. He didn't like just sending them out

  236. to fend for themselves,

  237. and their own wit,

  238. because really they weren't that way,

  239. or their own knowledge and skill,

  240. which they lacked greatly.

  241. He gave them his authority to go out,

  242. or his power to go out.

  243. And that term here,

  244. it could be used as authority or power.

  245. It means like inerrant power,

  246. an idea of someone possessing the right to do something,

  247. and actually having,

  248. like,

  249. the capacity to do it.

  250. And that's the kind of power that he gave them to go out.

  251. And so,

  252. they didn't just go out on their own.

  253. And he gave them his power to go out

  254. and do as he had been doing.

  255. So,

  256. which is interesting.

  257. In a parallel text in Matthew,

  258. it says that after he sent them out,

  259. he himself went out and continued teaching and doing this.

  260. It wasn't like,

  261. I'm going to sit back at the house and drink some lemonade

  262. while y'all go out.

  263. You know,

  264. he was doing this himself

  265. as the example for them.

  266. And so,

  267. in another sense,

  268. he granted them authority.

  269. He was saying,

  270. in a literal sense almost,

  271. that he was an extension.

  272. They were an extension of him

  273. as they ministered to others.

  274. And up until now,

  275. Jesus had been the one teaching,

  276. preaching,

  277. healing,

  278. casting out demons.

  279. But he sent his power to go out.

  280. And then we see

  281. that he sent them out two by two.

  282. So,

  283. why twos?

  284. I was able to kind of think of like,

  285. six different reasons,

  286. but really quickly,

  287. how important was it fulfilled the requirements of the law

  288. to,

  289. for every testimony to have,

  290. to be established by two or more witnesses.

  291. That's out of Deuteronomy 17,

  292. six.

  293. And then it also followed the ancient wisdom of Solomon

  294. and the Old Testament,

  295. two are better than one.

  296. It's the idea that if you fall,

  297. you have someone to pick you up.

  298. So that's another one,

  299. is provided the men with the companionship,

  300. encouragement,

  301. and someone to pray for them.

  302. I've been so thankful for that over the years,

  303. to have those kind of situations.

  304. It was the method used by John the Baptist

  305. and his followers.

  306. He sent them out by twos.

  307. And then you also see

  308. it was the method of the early church.

  309. A lot in the book of Acts,

  310. you'll read that.

  311. Paul often has somebody else with him,

  312. Barnabas or Silas,

  313. and they would,

  314. they would go.

  315. Or he would say,

  316. I'm going to send to you Timothy

  317. and another guy.

  318. Like it was always by twos.

  319. And it really still is the best method today.

  320. I remember earlier on,

  321. in my walk with the Lord,

  322. I was 18,

  323. 19,

  324. and I was just

  325. really burdened

  326. to like share the gospel

  327. with all my crazy lost friends

  328. that I went to high school with.

  329. And the Lord paired me up

  330. with another buddy of mine

  331. who was probably the craziest,

  332. craziest dude in our grade,

  333. seriously,

  334. before the Lord saved him.

  335. And we just started hunting people down.

  336. You know,

  337. we would call somebody up and say,

  338. hey,

  339. what are you doing this day?

  340. Let's hang out.

  341. And we would genuinely just hang out with him.

  342. And then we'd be like,

  343. so,

  344. you know,

  345. have some good conversations.

  346. We,

  347. we didn't really know what we were doing,

  348. to be honest.

  349. We were just trying to love people

  350. and pointing to Jesus,

  351. kind of a bull in a china closet

  352. kind of stuff.

  353. I remember we actually ran out of friends.

  354. Like we were like,

  355. who are we?

  356. And we actually pulled the yearbook out

  357. and started like going down

  358. through the yearbook.

  359. I remember one time we were praying,

  360. like Lord,

  361. we're running out of people to talk to.

  362. And like two minutes later,

  363. he dug up something out of his closet

  364. and it was like this,

  365. he started laughing.

  366. It was like a list of all the people

  367. he used to call to party on the weekends.

  368. Like,

  369. we're going after them.

  370. So it was like,

  371. it was,

  372. it was that.

  373. So,

  374. and today,

  375. I try to take the men I disciple

  376. on the Appalachian Trail

  377. and to share with guys

  378. who were coming by.

  379. The last time I took Kittrell,

  380. Matt Kittrell with me,

  381. I made him carry the cooler.

  382. It was great.

  383. But we just took little bottles of water,

  384. some Powerade,

  385. and yes,

  386. I'll explain this later.

  387. I took a few beers too.

  388. Number one,

  389. I went in vodka.

  390. And number one,

  391. we didn't give them more than one.

  392. So,

  393. but,

  394. I've had people say,

  395. do you have any,

  396. do you have any beer?

  397. And I was like,

  398. no,

  399. I just got water,

  400. man.

  401. Well,

  402. that's okay.

  403. And just keep walking.

  404. And so,

  405. we actually had

  406. a couple people that stopped

  407. and had a beer

  408. and we talked about Jesus

  409. and that was kind of a conundrum for them.

  410. So,

  411. Daniel Swanson,

  412. he's done this too.

  413. He's taken people down to the mall

  414. and in pairs

  415. and shared with people down there.

  416. Definitely,

  417. like,

  418. I was convicted

  419. a few years ago

  420. in my discipleship

  421. that I was,

  422. I was telling the guys

  423. that I am sharing my faith

  424. and they knew I was sharing my faith.

  425. But,

  426. really,

  427. just a personal part of it,

  428. I needed to be able to show them

  429. how to do it.

  430. They need to see me,

  431. like,

  432. have terrible conversations with people.

  433. They need to see me,

  434. like,

  435. get burned

  436. and rejected

  437. and as well as just

  438. have good conversations

  439. so that,

  440. at the end of the day,

  441. they'll know

  442. that this is

  443. not about how much you know

  444. or how clever you are.

  445. It's about,

  446. like,

  447. God's power in you.

  448. That's all it is.

  449. It doesn't matter.

  450. So,

  451. yeah,

  452. the by twos thing,

  453. a great way to do it.

  454. So,

  455. three things

  456. from our text today,

  457. if you'll look at

  458. the beginning of verse 11.

  459. Excuse me.

  460. Number one is,

  461. faithful messengers

  462. proclaim salvation.

  463. Faithful messengers

  464. proclaim salvation.

  465. You look at verse 11 and 12.

  466. And if any place

  467. will not receive you

  468. and they will not listen to you

  469. when you leave,

  470. shake off the dust

  471. that is on your feet

  472. as a testimony

  473. against them

  474. so that when they

  475. went out

  476. and proclaimed

  477. that people

  478. should repent.

  479. So,

  480. this is the first one.

  481. If you would,

  482. there's just a couple

  483. of places for you

  484. to turn today

  485. outside of Mark 6.

  486. Hold your place

  487. in Mark 6,

  488. but just go back

  489. to chapter 1

  490. of Mark.

  491. So,

  492. what was the message

  493. that they were

  494. proclaiming?

  495. And,

  496. more than likely,

  497. it was the same message

  498. that Jesus

  499. was proclaiming here

  500. at the beginning of Mark.

  501. If you look at verse 14,

  502. it says this,

  503. Jesus came into Galilee

  504. proclaiming the gospel

  505. of God

  506. and saying,

  507. the time is fulfilled

  508. and the kingdom of God

  509. is at hand.

  510. Repent

  511. and believe the gospel.

  512. So,

  513. the message

  514. that he was proclaiming

  515. was the good news

  516. that the kingdom

  517. of God

  518. is here,

  519. that God was establishing

  520. his rule

  521. over the hearts

  522. of Adam's

  523. fallen race.

  524. It was being established.

  525. and in response

  526. to this,

  527. people should repent

  528. and believe the gospel.

  529. So,

  530. let's just break this down.

  531. The kingdom of God,

  532. without getting

  533. to all the craziness

  534. of the kingdom of God,

  535. it can really be

  536. simply understood

  537. in three ways.

  538. The first

  539. is the spiritual kingdom

  540. or the invisible kingdom

  541. that exists

  542. in the hearts

  543. of those who believe.

  544. It's like the church

  545. invisible,

  546. like,

  547. it's the

  548. rule of Christ

  549. that is established

  550. in the hearts

  551. of those

  552. who have put

  553. their faith in him.

  554. And then also,

  555. you could be referring

  556. to the future

  557. millennial kingdom

  558. and the new heaven,

  559. the new earth,

  560. Revelation 20,

  561. fulfilling the

  562. Old Testament promises

  563. about the Messiah,

  564. which will come

  565. shortly before the end,

  566. and then,

  567. and then the eternal kingdom

  568. that follows that

  569. in the new heaven.

  570. So God's kingdom,

  571. if you look at this text,

  572. it's interesting.

  573. If you look at the text,

  574. it says that God's kingdom

  575. is here,

  576. and that it is coming.

  577. There's places,

  578. you know,

  579. where Jesus is teaching

  580. his disciples,

  581. pray,

  582. your kingdom come,

  583. right?

  584. And,

  585. but here he says,

  586. the kingdom of God

  587. is here.

  588. So,

  589. like,

  590. how is that to be understood?

  591. And many of you

  592. have heard me say this,

  593. but it's only the best

  594. analogy I can come up with.

  595. Actually,

  596. I don't think I came up

  597. with it either.

  598. But it's,

  599. it's a picture of,

  600. like,

  601. there being darkness

  602. and no light,

  603. but suddenly,

  604. like,

  605. the sun begins to come up.

  606. I'm an outdoorsman,

  607. and I like to fish,

  608. and I like to hunt,

  609. and usually you're out there

  610. at dark,

  611. and then,

  612. like,

  613. the sun comes up,

  614. and you get to watch that a lot.

  615. It's that idea of,

  616. like,

  617. the sun coming up,

  618. piercing the darkness,

  619. but it's not fully

  620. daylight yet.

  621. And that's a picture of,

  622. kind of,

  623. where we live right now.

  624. So the kingdom is here,

  625. and it is coming.

  626. He said,

  627. the time is fulfilled,

  628. Jesus says.

  629. And that's the Greek word,

  630. keros,

  631. not kromos,

  632. which is like a clock time.

  633. It has more to do,

  634. like,

  635. an epochal time,

  636. the error,

  637. a fixed point in history

  638. for an event to happen.

  639. And like in Galatians 4,

  640. it says,

  641. in the fullness of time,

  642. is that idea.

  643. And so the most significant error

  644. in human history

  645. was the arrival of Christ

  646. on the scene

  647. and Him beginning

  648. to bring in the kingdom of God,

  649. paying the penalty for sin

  650. and resurrecting from the dead.

  651. So,

  652. so that's the kingdom.

  653. So,

  654. how do you actually get

  655. into the kingdom?

  656. Right?

  657. So,

  658. if you look back,

  659. just in Mark 1,

  660. it says,

  661. repent

  662. and believe the gospel.

  663. And this is the message

  664. that they were proclaiming,

  665. saying that they should go out

  666. and teach

  667. and declare

  668. that men should repent

  669. of their sin.

  670. So,

  671. a great,

  672. I'm trying to,

  673. so much to learn

  674. about repentance.

  675. And then those

  676. who actually mentor

  677. and disciple me here

  678. always tell me,

  679. you have a lot to learn

  680. about repentance.

  681. And I'm like,

  682. man,

  683. I do.

  684. Because I,

  685. I don't,

  686. I don't handle it

  687. so well sometimes.

  688. But really,

  689. literally,

  690. repenting,

  691. it means to change

  692. one's mind

  693. for the better.

  694. heartily to

  695. a man with

  696. abhorrence

  697. one's past sins.

  698. It's a changing

  699. of the mind

  700. that leads

  701. to change of action.

  702. It's a turning

  703. away of sin,

  704. hating it,

  705. and resolving

  706. only by God's power

  707. to overcome it,

  708. even as you turn

  709. in faith to Him.

  710. So,

  711. a little helpful thing,

  712. being repentant

  713. is not just

  714. feeling guilty

  715. and feeling bad

  716. for things you've done.

  717. unbelievers do that.

  718. So,

  719. what's the difference?

  720. And the difference

  721. is that

  722. genuine repentance

  723. arises from a heart

  724. of sorrow

  725. for the crimes

  726. it has committed

  727. against God.

  728. It's called

  729. a godly sorrow

  730. that leads to repentance.

  731. 2 Corinthians 7,

  732. 10.

  733. A godly sorrow

  734. that produces

  735. a desire

  736. to change

  737. one's ways

  738. and change

  739. the way

  740. a repentant sinner

  741. lives.

  742. As David said

  743. when he committed

  744. adultery,

  745. murder,

  746. and scandal,

  747. he told God

  748. in Psalm 51,

  749. you alone

  750. have I sinned against

  751. and done what is evil

  752. in your sight.

  753. So,

  754. he could have said

  755. I sinned against

  756. a lot of people,

  757. but he knew that

  758. all sin,

  759. all of it,

  760. is first and foremost

  761. against God.

  762. And that's why he said

  763. that you and you alone

  764. have I sinned against.

  765. It's a grief

  766. that's produced.

  767. So,

  768. all the sin,

  769. you know,

  770. calls us

  771. to reckon with God

  772. and to turn away

  773. from our sin.

  774. And by the way,

  775. another thing,

  776. like,

  777. when we say repent,

  778. when the scripture

  779. says repent,

  780. when Jesus said it

  781. right here,

  782. it's not an invitation.

  783. It's not,

  784. he's not simply

  785. inviting people

  786. to come

  787. and follow him.

  788. It's used as a command

  789. like repent

  790. and believe.

  791. It's not a

  792. imitation.

  793. And,

  794. as if,

  795. like,

  796. you see your child

  797. doing something crazy

  798. that could harm them

  799. and you command them

  800. like,

  801. turn now,

  802. come back.

  803. Because,

  804. because really,

  805. Jesus knows

  806. that he is the only hope

  807. they have.

  808. So,

  809. he's not saying like,

  810. please,

  811. like,

  812. he's not a,

  813. it's not that,

  814. it's just repent

  815. and believe.

  816. Because he knows

  817. that he is the only thing

  818. that can save them.

  819. So,

  820. it's not an invitation.

  821. So,

  822. we have to

  823. come back

  824. to this idea

  825. of repentance.

  826. It's left out

  827. a lot.

  828. Y'all won't believe me,

  829. but it's left out

  830. even on the college campus.

  831. It's left out.

  832. Several years ago,

  833. I had a conversation

  834. with a

  835. so-called atheist

  836. and

  837. he told me,

  838. like,

  839. I used to be

  840. a Christian

  841. and so I asked him

  842. to like explain

  843. what he meant

  844. and he said,

  845. well,

  846. about a year ago,

  847. I was going through

  848. a really rough time

  849. and some Christians

  850. came to me

  851. and they just said,

  852. man,

  853. I'm sorry,

  854. you're having a hard time.

  855. What you really need

  856. is Jesus in your life

  857. and he'll make you joyful,

  858. he'll bring you peace

  859. and so I was like,

  860. man,

  861. I want that.

  862. So,

  863. he came

  864. and he,

  865. you know,

  866. came to the church

  867. and,

  868. you know,

  869. did the whole deal

  870. and then,

  871. and then in that conversation

  872. he said,

  873. and it was cool

  874. for a while

  875. but then,

  876. this happened.

  877. I broke up

  878. with my girlfriend.

  879. I lost my job

  880. and,

  881. and I just had to tell him,

  882. like,

  883. man,

  884. like,

  885. I'm very sorry

  886. that like,

  887. all that's happened to you

  888. but I'm even more sorry

  889. that these Christians

  890. that probably meant well,

  891. they didn't tell you

  892. what the gospel really was.

  893. Like,

  894. the truth is,

  895. yes,

  896. Christ does give you joy,

  897. he does give you satisfaction,

  898. he does give you peace

  899. but that comes

  900. by way of repenting

  901. of your sin

  902. and following Christ

  903. and they forgot that.

  904. They forgot to tell him

  905. to turn away

  906. from his sin

  907. and believe the gospel.

  908. So,

  909. don't,

  910. it's a,

  911. it's an overflow,

  912. it's an outcome

  913. of knowing Christ

  914. that it is not the gospel

  915. and you keep that in mind

  916. and how we actually

  917. teach to people.

  918. So,

  919. he says,

  920. repent and believe.

  921. So,

  922. this isn't just

  923. a mere acknowledgement,

  924. it's to believe

  925. means to be persuaded,

  926. to be strongly convicted

  927. by something,

  928. to throw yourself

  929. completely in trust,

  930. right?

  931. So,

  932. it's a belief

  933. that produces action,

  934. it's not just

  935. a mental ascent.

  936. You believe it so much

  937. that it changes

  938. how you live.

  939. And then the gospel

  940. is just,

  941. we talk about it

  942. all the time,

  943. it's the glad tithings,

  944. the good news

  945. that Christ came here

  946. to save sinners,

  947. all right?

  948. Turn to Acts 3

  949. really quick.

  950. Acts 3.

  951. So,

  952. after Jesus

  953. had ascended back,

  954. after he had ascended

  955. back to heaven,

  956. the apostles,

  957. the apostles continued

  958. this message

  959. of repentance.

  960. It wasn't

  961. just come to Jesus

  962. and get happy.

  963. Acts 3,

    Acts 3:17

  964. verse 17,

  965. it said,

  966. And now,

  967. brothers,

  968. I know that you

  969. acted in ignorance,

  970. as did also your rulers,

  971. but what God foretold

  972. by the mouth

  973. of all the prophets,

  974. that his Christ

  975. would suffer,

  976. he thus fulfilled.

  977. Repent,

  978. therefore,

  979. and turn again,

  980. that your sins

  981. may be blotted out,

  982. that times of refreshing

  983. may come

  984. from the presence

  985. of the Lord,

  986. and that he may

  987. send the Christ

  988. appointed for you,

  989. Jesus,

  990. whom heaven must receive

  991. until the time

  992. for restoring

  993. all things

  994. about which God

  995. spoke by the mouth

  996. of all his holy prophets

  997. so long ago.

  998. That resembles

  999. what's said in Isaiah

  1000. about God saying,

  1001. Turn back to me,

  1002. repent,

  1003. that a time

  1004. of healing

  1005. and refreshing

  1006. will come,

  1007. that your sins

  1008. will be blotted away.

  1009. Christ was the fulfillment

  1010. of that,

1011. and we never forgot that.

  1012. Repent

  1013. and turn again

  1014. to the Lord,

  1015. that your sins

  1016. will be blotted out.

  1017. And it says

  1018. that genuine repentance

  1019. does bring refreshing.

  1020. Those of you

  1021. who have believed

  1022. the gospel

  1023. know that.

  1024. It's a refreshing,

  1025. cooling presence

  1026. to your seared conscience

  1027. that sin has brought.

  1028. So,

  1029. back in,

  1030. if you look back

  1031. in Mark 6,

1032. you see that he says,

  1033. if you're rejected,

  1034. shake off the dust

  1035. from your sandals.

  1036. Alright?

  1037. Shake off the dust

  1038. from your sandals.

  1039. So,

  1040. if the message

  1041. rejected,

1042. this is what Jews did

  1043. when they returned

  1044. from a foreign land

1045. or from a pagan land

  1046. when they returned

  1047. from a journey.

  1048. So,

  1049. before they actually

  1050. crossed back into Israel,

1051. they would shake the dust,

  1052. shake the dust

  1053. off their sandals,

  1054. off their clothes,

  1055. and it was just

  1056. symbolic.

  1057. It represented

  1058. like total

  1059. disassociation.

  1060. from the pagans

  1061. in their polluted land.

  1062. Luke 10,

  1063. 8 is an example

  1064. of that.

  1065. In this case,

  1066. Jesus was telling

  1067. his men

  1068. to do this

  1069. as a sign

  1070. of those

  1071. who rejected

  1072. the gospel

  1073. and rejected him

  1074. and that they would

  1075. face God's judgment

  1076. one day.

  1077. And so,

  1078. it also,

  1079. it made,

  1080. it was symbolic

  1081. of the messengers

  1082. freeing themselves

  1083. of the responsibility

  1084. of sharing.

  1085. Now,

  1086. some of you

  1087. may not like

  1088. to hear this,

  1089. but,

  1090. like,

  1091. if you,

  1092. if you just

  1093. write this down,

  1094. like Ezekiel 33

  1095. is the,

  1096. the picture

  1097. of the,

  1098. or the vision

  1099. of the watchman

  1100. that God gives

  1101. Ezekiel.

  1102. And he says,

  1103. I've appointed you

  1104. a watchman

  1105. to the house

  1106. of Israel.

  1107. And so,

  1108. a watchman

  1109. would be up

  1110. on a high place

  1111. in the city,

  1112. a guard tower

  1113. or whatever.

  1114. It is his job

  1115. to watch for danger

  1116. that might be coming.

  1117. And his job

  1118. also was to blow

  1119. a trumpet

1120. if he did see danger.

  1121. And,

  1122. and then the people

  1123. would either listen

  1124. to him

  1125. or they would

  1126. ignore it.

  1127. But,

  1128. God says,

  1129. it is your

  1130. responsibility,

  1131. I hold you

  1132. personally accountable

  1133. to blow the trumpet.

  1134. All right?

  1135. To warn the people

  1136. of impending danger.

  1137. And,

  1138. if they ignore it,

  1139. the blood is on

  1140. their own heads.

  1141. And you are free

  1142. of your responsibility.

  1143. But,

  1144. but if you don't

  1145. blow it,

  1146. he says,

  1147. I will hold you

  1148. accountable.

  1149. All right?

  1150. And that's true.

  1151. It's true.

  1152. Acts 18,

    Acts 18:6

  1153. verse 6,

  1154. Paul had just

  1155. been rejected

  1156. and this is

  1157. what he says.

  1158. And when they

  1159. opposed

  1160. and reviled

  1161. Paul,

  1162. he shook off

  1163. his garments.

  1164. There it is.

  1165. See,

  1166. he shook off

  1167. his garments.

  1168. And he said

  1169. to them,

  1170. your blood

  1171. be on your

  1172. own heads.

  1173. I am

  1174. innocent.

  1175. All right?

  1176. Yes,

  1177. this was the

  1178. man who wrote

  1179. Romans 9.

  1180. He knew

  1181. about the

  1182. sovereignty of

  1183. God.

  1184. He knew

  1185. that God

  1186. was the

  1187. one who

  1188. ultimately

  1189. worked in

  1190. the hearts

  1191. of men,

  1192. but he

  1193. never took

  1194. that as

  1195. an excuse

  1196. to just lay

  1197. back.

  1198. He knew

  1199. that preaching

  1200. the gospel

  1201. was the

  1202. means God

  1203. uses to

  1204. save sinners.

  1205. And he

  1206. said,

  1207. I'm innocent.

  1208. I'm free

  1209. of my

  1210. responsibility.

  1211. I've told you

  1212. the message,

  1213. and I'm

  1214. walking away.

  1215. So it

  1216. was symbolic

  1217. of moving

  1218. on.

  1219. So that's

  1220. number one.

  1221. Faithful

  1222. messengers

  1223. proclaim

  1224. salvation.

  1225. Number two,

  1226. in our text

  1227. back in

  1228. Mark,

  1229. faithful

  1230. messengers

  1231. manifest

  1232. compassion.

  1233. Faithful

  1234. messengers

  1235. manifest

  1236. compassion.

  1237. So nothing

  1238. is more

  1239. distasteful

  1240. to a lost

  1241. world than

  1242. Bible

  1243. thumpers

  1244. hurling

  1245. stuff at

  1246. them and

  1247. then not

  1248. caring for

  1249. them at

  1250. all.

  1251. Alright?

  1252. Good deeds,

  1253. good works,

  1254. as one of

  1255. the old

  1256. confessions

  1257. says,

  1258. good deeds,

  1259. good works

  1260. adorn the

  1261. gospel.

  1262. They make

  1263. the gospel

  1264. look beautiful.

  1265. And the

  1266. compassion of

  1267. Christ is

  1268. seen all

  1269. over the

  1270. place.

  1271. But if you

  1272. look back in

  1273. our text,

  1274. it's to

  1275. follow here,

  1276. faithful

  1277. messengers

  1278. !

  1279. Manifest

  1280. compassion.

  1281. Verse 7,

  1282. He called

  1283. the twelve

  1284. and began

  1285. to send

  1286. them out

  1287. two by

  1288. two,

  1289. and He

  1290. gave them

  1291. authority

  1292. over

  1293. unclean

  1294. spirits.

  1295. In

  1296. verse 13,

  1297. And they

  1298. cast out

  1299. many demons

  1300. and anointed

  1301. with oil

  1302. many who

  1303. were sick

  1304. and healed

  1305. them.

  1306. Alright?

  1307. So our

  1308. Lord,

  1309. He was

  1310. the embodiment

  1311. of compassion.

  1312. He was

  1313. the greatest

  1314. incarnation

  1315. of the

  1316. compassion

  1317. of God

  1318. ever.

  1319. He never

  1320. did things

  1321. selfishly

  1322. or begrudgingly.

  1323. He didn't

  1324. have a secret

  1325. agenda.

  1326. I mean,

  1327. He didn't

  1328. like,

  1329. I pity

  1330. these

  1331. sinners.

  1332. That wasn't

  1333. His attitude

  1334. at all.

  1335. Jesus

  1336. served people

  1337. from a

  1338. deep and

  1339. sincere

  1340. compassion.

  1341. And the

  1342. word that's

  1343. kind of used

  1344. for compassion

  1345. in many

  1346. places in

  1347. the New

  1348. Testament

  1349. means like

  1350. from the

  1351. bowels.

  1352. It means

  1353. like the

  1354. place of

  1355. tender

  1356. affections

  1357. for another.

  1358. a

  1359. aching

  1360. heart

  1361. which

  1362. mercy

  1363. resides

  1364. for those

  1365. who

  1366. are

  1367. lowly

  1368. and

  1369. weak.

  1370. Alright?

  1371. So it was

  1372. more like

  1373. that,

  1374. not like,

  1375. oh,

  1376. I need to

  1377. go help

  1378. these

  1379. people.

  1380. Like,

  1381. he felt

  1382. it.

  1383. It was

  1384. deep

  1385. inside

  1386. of him.

  1387. And

  1388. God's

  1389. compassion

  1390. was spoken

  1391. of so

  1392. many times

  1393. in the

  1394. Old

  1395. Testament.

  1396. It

  1397. reveals

  1398. like this

  1399. astounding,

  1400. tender-hearted

  1401. God toward

  1402. those who

  1403. are weak

  1404. and lowly.

  1405. Psalm 79

    Psalms 79:8

  1406. verse 8

  1407. says this,

  1408. Do not

  1409. remember

  1410. against us

  1411. our former

  1412. iniquities.

  1413. Let your

  1414. compassion

  1415. come speedily

  1416. to meet us

  1417. for we are

  1418. brought low.

  1419. There's that

  1420. idea.

  1421. Help us,

  1422. O God,

  1423. of our

  1424. salvation

  1425. for the

  1426. glory of

  1427. your name.

  1428. Deliver us

  1429. and atone

  1430. our sins

  1431. for your

  1432. name's sake.

  1433. So now,

  1434. Jesus is

  1435. here.

  1436. The gospel

  1437. is here.

  1438. And so all

  1439. the teaching,

  1440. all the

  1441. miracles

  1442. were acts

  1443. of compassion

  1444. to those

  1445. who dwelt

  1446. in darkness

  1447. and in the

  1448. bondage of

  1449. sin.

  1450. Okay?

  1451. He was the

  1452. incarnation of

  1453. the Father's

  1454. compassion.

  1455. What we just

  1456. read was

  1457. fulfilled in

  1458. Christ,

  1459. atoned for

  1460. our sins.

  1461. And a

  1462. little later

  1463. on in

  1464. Mark,

  1465. this same

  1466. chapter,

  1467. if you just

  1468. look at

  1469. Mark 6

  1470. 34,

  1471. it says,

  1472. He went

  1473. ashore and

  1474. he saw a

  1475. great crowd

  1476. and he had

  1477. compassion

  1478. on them

  1479. because they

  1480. were like

  1481. sheep without

  1482. a shepherd

  1483. and he

  1484. began to

  1485. teach them

  1486. many things.

  1487. So,

  1488. now the

  1489. disciples are

  1490. going out

  1491. as an

  1492. extension of

  1493. Christ to

  1494. the world

  1495. to deliver

  1496. and to

  1497. heal,

  1498. to preach

  1499. the kingdom,

  1500. to cast

  1501. out demons

  1502. and to

  1503. heal the

  1504. sick.

  1505. Alright?

  1506. Now,

  1507. as we've

  1508. said,

  1509. God uses

  1510. miracles to

  1511. confirm or

  1512. to validate

  1513. his claims.

  1514. Okay?

  1515. Like,

  1516. there was

  1517. miracles done

  1518. in the Old

  1519. Testament.

  1520. Jesus was

  1521. not the

  1522. first one

  1523. to work

  1524. miracles or

  1525. to raise

  1526. somebody from

  1527. the dead.

  1528. I mean,

  1529. even Elijah

  1530. did that.

  1531. So,

  1532. I do

  1533. believe,

  1534. because I've

  1535. seen,

  1536. I've heard

  1537. and I've

  1538. experienced,

  1539. I do

  1540. believe that

  1541. God still

  1542. does use

  1543. miracles as

  1544. something to

  1545. show his

  1546. power, to

  1547. show his

  1548. compassion to

  1549. people.

  1550. But I

  1551. also will

  1552. say that I

  1553. know it's

  1554. not the

  1555. norm.

  1556. Okay?

  1557. Years ago,

  1558. when I was in

  1559. the hospital,

  1560. people were

  1561. praying that

  1562. I would

  1563. like be

  1564. healed from

  1565. my cystic

  1566. fibrosis,

  1567. that I

  1568. wouldn't need

  1569. a transplant.

  1570. I had more

  1571. oil dumped

  1572. on me than

  1573. McDonald's

  1574. french fries.

  1575. But I

  1576. had a lot

  1577. of prayer

  1578. on that.

  1579. And,

  1580. but really,

  1581. the greatest

  1582. miracle that

  1583. is performed

  1584. today is

  1585. like the

  1586. transformation,

  1587. the regeneration

  1588. of the dead

  1589. human soul.

  1590. By his

  1591. wombs,

  1592. they will be

  1593. healed.

  1594. That was

  1595. speaking of

  1596. a spiritual

  1597. healing.

  1598. And Christ

  1599. brought that

  1600. when he

  1601. came.

  1602. You can't

  1603. be fickled

  1604. by miracles.

  1605. Did y'all

  1606. know that in

  1607. the last

  1608. days, like

  1609. false teachers

  1610. will be able

  1611. to do

  1612. miracles?

  1613. So what

  1614. are you

  1615. going to

  1616. do?

  1617. Are you

  1618. going to

  1619. believe it?

  1620. Or say,

  1621. like, where

  1622. is that

  1623. coming from?

  1624. It's not,

  1625. it can't be

  1626. it.

  1627. It's got to

  1628. be something

  1629. more than

  1630. that.

  1631. So for

  1632. Christ to

  1633. take a

  1634. lost,

  1635. hell-bound

  1636. sinner,

  1637. a rebel,

  1638. and transform

  1639. them into,

  1640. like a lover

  1641. of the king,

  1642. is the greatest

  1643. miracle,

  1644. really.

  1645. And that

  1646. comes by

  1647. the gospel.

  1648. It comes by

  1649. us sharing

  1650. the word of

  1651. God with

  1652. people.

  1653. So that's

  1654. number three,

  1655. or number

  1656. two.

  1657. Faithful

  1658. messengers

  1659. manifest

  1660. compassion.

  1661. Number

  1662. three,

  1663. faithful

  1664. messengers

  1665. live dependent

  1666. on God.

  1667. Okay?

  1668. Verse

  1669. eight,

  1670. he charged

  1671. them to

  1672. take nothing

  1673. for their

  1674. journey,

  1675. except the

  1676. staff,

  1677. no bread,

  1678. no bag,

  1679. no money,

  1680. in their

  1681. belts,

  1682. but to

  1683. wear their

  1684. sandals,

  1685. and to

  1686. not put

  1687. on two

  1688. tunics.

  1689. And he

  1690. said to

  1691. them,

  1692. whenever you

  1693. enter a

  1694. house,

  1695. stay there

  1696. until you

  1697. depart from

  1698. there.

  1699. So like,

  1700. what's all

  1701. that about?

  1702. Well,

  1703. you know,

  1704. the traveling

  1705. bag,

  1706. which he

  1707. doesn't ask

  1708. them to

  1709. take,

  1710. it was

  1711. used to

  1712. carry money

  1713. or to

  1714. carry food.

  1715. For a

  1716. long time,

  1717. like you

  1718. can just

  1719. use Exodus

  1720. 12 as an

  1721. example of

  1722. this,

  1723. things that

  1724. were listed

  1725. here in

  1726. these two

  1727. verses,

  1728. they were

  1729. signs to

  1730. the Jewish

  1731. people of

  1732. their helplessness,

  1733. their need to

  1734. trust in God,

  1735. and also

  1736. urgency.

  1737. Like,

  1738. when you're in

  1739. a hurry,

  1740. you don't have

  1741. time to

  1742. pack three

  1743. or four bags

  1744. of all your

  1745. junk.

  1746. Like,

  1747. go.

  1748. That's kind

  1749. of like the

  1750. picture here.

  1751. Guys,

  1752. you don't have

  1753. time to

  1754. let up the

  1755. hair dryer

  1756. and the

  1757. makeup.

  1758. You just

  1759. go.

  1760. Like,

  1761. that's,

  1762. it's not,

  1763. it's kind

  1764. of like that.

  1765. But bread

  1766. and bags

  1767. and money

  1768. and their

  1769. belts and

  1770. two tunics

  1771. were symbolic

  1772. of like all

  1773. the things

  1774. that make

  1775. life secure.

  1776. Like,

  1777. what makes

  1778. your life

  1779. feel secure

  1780. right now?

  1781. Probably your

  1782. money,

  1783. probably the

  1784. roof over

  1785. your head,

  1786. the clothes

  1787. on your

  1788. back.

  1789. And so,

  1790. Jesus was

  1791. somewhat asking

  1792. them to mimic

  1793. the prophets

  1794. of old,

  1795. like Elijah

  1796. and Elisha,

  1797. who were fed

  1798. and sheltered

  1799. by those they

  1800. ministered to,

  1801. and to accept

  1802. the hospitality

  1803. of the local

  1804. people that

  1805. accepted their

  1806. message.

  1807. Right?

  1808. It's like,

  1809. don't,

  1810. don't seek

  1811. out better

  1812. accommodations,

  1813. more comfortable

  1814. places.

  1815. Don't stay

  1816. at super

  1817. crazy nice

  1818. hotels,

  1819. you know?

  1820. Just be

  1821. content.

  1822. Take what

  1823. you're given

  1824. and be

  1825. content.

  1826. And so,

  1827. Jesus didn't

  1828. want his,

  1829. or the people

  1830. that encountered

  1831. his disciples

  1832. to think

  1833. that they had

  1834. some kind

  1835. of secret

  1836. agenda

  1837. to get

  1838. money,

  1839. to grow,

  1840. to grow

  1841. wealthy.

  1842. And so,

  1843. they just

  1844. went that

  1845. way.

  1846. Preachers

  1847. in England

  1848. during the

  1849. 18th and

  1850. 19th

  1851. centuries

  1852. were renowned

  1853. for considering

  1854. their own

  1855. personal pleasures

  1856. and comforts

  1857. above the

  1858. needs of the

  1859. people in

  1860. their church.

  1861. They could

  1862. talk to you

  1863. more about

  1864. their hunting

  1865. dogs and

  1866. their wine

  1867. sellers than

  1868. they could

  1869. about the

  1870. gospel and

  1871. the word

  1872. of God.

  1873. It's the

  1874. same thing

  1875. today,

  1876. really,

  1877. just prosperity

  1878. preaching,

  1879. tell evangelists,

  1880. send me

  1881. money.

  1882. It's the

  1883. same kind

  1884. of stuff.

  1885. And like,

  1886. we've had

  1887. enough of

  1888. that in

  1889. our generation.

  1890. We need

  1891. to be able

  1892. to preach

  1893. the true

  1894. gospel.

  1895. So,

  1896. he says,

  1897. he desires

  1898. them to

  1899. just travel

  1900. light,

  1901. to take

  1902. only what's

  1903. needed,

  1904. to leave

  1905. everything else

  1906. behind.

  1907. And the

  1908. staff that he

  1909. did tell them

  1910. to take

  1911. was used

  1912. for walking,

  1913. also for

  1914. protection,

  1915. and the

  1916. sandals were

  1917. just the

  1918. ordinary

  1919. footwear.

  1920. And he

  1921. says,

  1922. take one

  1923. tunic,

  1924. which are

  1925. just the

  1926. standard

  1927. dress,

  1928. because in

  1929. this culture,

  1930. two tunics

  1931. can symbolize

  1932. wealth.

  1933. And like,

  1934. look at me,

  1935. I've got two

  1936. tunics.

  1937. So he's

  1938. like,

  1939. just take

  1940. one.

  1941. Associate

  1942. with the

  1943. commoners,

  1944. the lowly,

  1945. and think

  1946. about this.

  1947. Don't come

  1948. across as

  1949. high and

  1950. mighty and

  1951. holier than

  1952. thou,

  1953. but associate

  1954. with these

  1955. people.

  1956. So,

  1957. are we

  1958. supposed to

  1959. do that

  1960. today?

  1961. Maybe,

  1962. but I

  1963. don't think

  1964. necessarily.

  1965. The idea

  1966. here is

  1967. that he

  1968. wants them

  1969. to learn

  1970. to trust

  1971. him,

  1972. that go

  1973. without making

  1974. special

  1975. preparations

  1976. for your

  1977. travels,

  1978. undertake

  1979. this

  1980. assignment,

  1981. trusting

  1982. in me,

  1983. to provide

  1984. for all

  1985. your needs.

  1986. Can you

  1987. do that?

  1988. He was

  1989. teaching

  1990. them

  1991. reliance

  1992. and

  1993. dependence,

  1994. that no

  1995. matter what,

  1996. no matter

  1997. what context,

  1998. ultimately,

  1999. all provision

  2000. comes from

  2001. God.

  2002. That's even

  2003. true for

  2004. us.

  2005. He was

  2006. just

  2007. specifically

  2008. showing

  2009. them,

  2010. just so

  2011. you'll

  2012. know,

  2013. a little

  2014. lesson for

  2015. you guys

  2016. and your

  2017. little

  2018. internship

  2019. here,

  2020. that

  2021. everything

  2022. comes

  2023. from me.

  2024. I'm

  2025. going to

  2026. go show

  2027. you,

  2028. so go

  2029. out,

  2030. don't

  2031. take all

  2032. this

  2033. stuff

  2034. with

  2035. you.

  2036. And

  2037. so,

  2038. to walk

  2039. in complete

  2040. dependence

  2041. on God

  2042. and his

  2043. power to

  2044. supply their

  2045. needs.

  2046. I've seen

  2047. the Lord

  2048. do it many

  2049. times in

  2050. my own

  2051. life.

  2052. so that's

  2053. the third

  2054. point,

  2055. to be

  2056. dependent

  2057. on God,

  2058. to not

  2059. want anything

  2060. other than to

  2061. minister the

  2062. gospel to

  2063. people,

  2064. and then

  2065. trust in the

  2066. Lord for

  2067. your provision.

  2068. So in

  2069. conclusion,

  2070. if you

  2071. know Christ,

  2072. and you

  2073. just need to

  2074. know that you

  2075. don't need a

  2076. bunch of

  2077. brains or a

  2078. theology degree

  2079. to talk about

  2080. Jesus with

  2081. people,

  2082. the disciples

  2083. were ordinary

  2084. guys,

  2085. super ordinary

  2086. guys,

  2087. like extra

  2088. ordinary

  2089. guys.

  2090. They were

  2091. fishermen,

  2092. tax collectors,

  2093. often actually

  2094. like kids and

  2095. fought with

  2096. each other.

  2097. I mean,

  2098. it would

  2099. have been

  2100. just to

  2101. see Jesus

  2102. and go,

  2103. man,

  2104. just so

  2105. many times

  2106. of these

  2107. guys.

  2108. They

  2109. weren't

  2110. anything

  2111. special.

  2112. But if

  2113. you look at

  2114. Acts 4

  2115. real quick,

  2116. I just

  2117. want to

  2118. show you

  2119. one thing.

  2120. Acts 4

    Acts 4:13

  2121. verse 13.

  2122. This is

  2123. Peter and

  2124. John as

  2125. they were

  2126. preaching.

  2127. Acts 4

    Acts 4:13

  2128. verse 13.

  2129. It says,

  2130. Now,

  2131. when they

  2132. saw the

  2133. boldness of

  2134. Peter and

  2135. John,

  2136. they perceived

  2137. that they

  2138. were uneducated,

  2139. common men,

  2140. they were

  2141. astonished,

  2142. and they

  2143. recognized that

  2144. they had

  2145. been with

  2146. Jesus.

  2147. That's the

  2148. key.

  2149. It's not

  2150. about how

  2151. many books

  2152. you've read.

  2153. I don't

  2154. care if you

  2155. can quote

  2156. the greatest

  2157. theologians in

  2158. history,

  2159. like to

  2160. know Jesus,

  2161. to encounter

  2162. Jesus,

  2163. and to be

  2164. taught and

  2165. fed by

  2166. Jesus is

  2167. all you need.

  2168. And if

  2169. you're

  2170. around him,

  2171. you become

  2172. like him.

  2173. If you

  2174. love him,

  2175. you talk

  2176. more about

  2177. him.

  2178. We've got to

  2179. get rid of

  2180. this idea

  2181. that evangelism

  2182. is some

  2183. awkward event

  2184. that we

  2185. take part in

  2186. every now and

  2187. then.

  2188. It's to be

  2189. embodied in

  2190. who we are,

  2191. and how we

  2192. talk, how we

  2193. live, and

  2194. whoever we

  2195. encounter.

  2196. And if you're

  2197. holding back a

  2198. fear of failure,

  2199. let go of those

  2200. fears today.

  2201. Be done with it.

  2202. There's a lot of

  2203. work that needs to

  2204. be done.

  2205. There's a lot

  2206. of dead,

  2207. lost souls out

  2208. there that

  2209. need the

  2210. gospel.

  2211. Fear God

  2212. more than

  2213. you fear

  2214. men.

  2215. All right?

  2216. So, come

  2217. before the

  2218. Lord.

  2219. Some of you

  2220. need to

  2221. pray that

  2222. God makes

  2223. you like

  2224. this.

  2225. I'm a

  2226. hero that

  2227. I've always

  2228. had, but

  2229. the last two

  2230. months I

  2231. began reading

  2232. more of his

  2233. stuff, and

  2234. it brought

  2235. me to tears

  2236. on several

  2237. occasions.

  2238. This is Jim

  2239. Elliott.

  2240. And in his

  2241. college years,

  2242. this is

  2243. something that

  2244. he wrote.

  2245. He said,

  2246. Father, make

  2247. me a

  2248. crisis man.

  2249. Bring those

  2250. I come in

  2251. contact to

  2252. decision.

  2253. Let me not

  2254. be a mile

  2255. post on a

  2256. single road.

  2257. Make me a

  2258. fork that

  2259. men must

  2260. turn one

  2261. way or

  2262. another on

  2263. facing Christ

  2264. in me.

  2265. Like, let

  2266. those who

  2267. encounter Christ

  2268. in me go

  2269. one way or

  2270. another.

  2271. Like, don't

  2272. let them turn

  2273. away or let

  2274. them come to

  2275. Christ.

  2276. that was

  2277. on July

  2278. 7th in

  2279. 1948.

  2280. So, we

  2281. need to

  2282. pray that.

  2283. We need to

  2284. pray that.

  2285. I need to

  2286. pray that.

  2287. We need to

  2288. be people who,

  2289. when others

  2290. meet us, they

  2291. encounter Christ.

  2292. And if you

  2293. don't know

  2294. Christ today,

  2295. you've heard

  2296. the message

  2297. that was

  2298. spoken.

  2299. Repent.

  2300. Turn away

  2301. from your

  2302. sin and

  2303. throw yourself

  2304. at the cross

  2305. on the mercy

  2306. of Jesus.

  2307. He is alive

  2308. today.

  2309. Like, we're

  2310. about to

  2311. come up on

  2312. Easter.

  2313. Like, what

  2314. are you going

  2315. to do with

  2316. that?

  2317. Like, he's

  2318. alive.

  2319. He's got this

  2320. dead dude from

  2321. the past.

  2322. He's somebody

  2323. that's here

  2324. right now that

  2325. you have to

  2326. reckon with.

  2327. And he's more

  2328. than willing to

  2329. receive you with

  2330. compassion and

  2331. open arms.

  2332. So, face him

  2333. now as your

  2334. friend or

  2335. resist him as

  2336. his enemy.

  2337. Turn in faith.

  2338. You can come

  2339. and talk to me

  2340. or Nathan or

  2341. Wes or one of

  2342. the elders here.

  2343. But don't pass

  2344. that up.

  2345. So, let's

  2346. just close in

  2347. prayer together

  2348. as we continue

  2349. our worship

  2350. today.

  2351. Amen.
