  1. Amen. Please take out your copy of God's Word. Turn to the Gospel according to Mark chapter 7.

    Mark 7 chapter mention

  2. Amen. It's good to be here with you today, and I'm glad that you're here with us. If you are a guest with us today, we have been preaching, working together through, verse by verse, through the Gospel according to Mark, looking at the life of Christ together.

  3. And we've come now to chapter 7, and I'm going to read to us the first 13 verses.

  4. Now when the Pharisees gathered to him with some of the scribes who had come from Jerusalem, they saw that some of his disciples ate with hands that were defiled, that is, unwashed.

  5. For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they wash their hands properly, holding to the tradition of the elders.

  6. And when they come from the marketplace, they do not eat unless they wash.

  7. And there are many other traditions that they observe, such as the washing of cups and pots and copper vessels and dining couches.

  8. And the Pharisees and the scribes asked him,

  9. Why do your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat with defiled hands?

  10. And he said to them,

  11. Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written,

  12. This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.

  13. In vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.

  14. You leave the commandment of God and hold to the tradition of men.

  15. And he said to them,

  16. You have a fine way of rejecting the commandment of God in order to establish your tradition.

  17. For Moses said,

  18. Honor your father and mother, and whoever reviles father or mother must surely die.

  19. But you say,

  20. If a man tells his father or his mother,

  21. Whatever you would have gained from me is Corban, that is, given to God,

  22. then you no longer permit him to do anything for his father or mother,

  23. thus making void the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down.

  24. And many such things you do.

  25. This is God's word to us, written for his glory and our good.

  26. We will all do well to listen to it and obey it.

  27. Join me in prayer.

  28. Father, we do praise you this morning for the person and work of Jesus Christ.

  29. We thank you that you are drawing us together even now to hear from your word,

  30. and we praise you for it.

  31. I pray, Father, that it will be powerful this morning in our lives,

  32. in my preaching of it and in the hearing of it and in the application of it throughout this next week.

  33. This is a gift from you.

  34. We cannot accomplish this on our own.

  35. No perfectly put together speech.

  36. No convincing nature of my argument.

  37. Not the best note-taker, best listener in this room can possibly understand and apply your word

  38. unless you work in us to accomplish that by your spirit.

  39. And so we pray that that would be the case this morning,

  40. that none of us would leave here unchanged.

  41. And we pray this in Christ's name.

  42. Amen.

  43. So we have another one of these confrontations on the religious of Jerusalem with Jesus.

  44. Now he's coming to a close of his Galilean ministry.

  45. It's beginning to wind down.

  46. He's just fed the 5,000.

  47. It's the last of the largest groups.

  48. We'll see him feed later 4,000 as the reverb is being worked out of the system right now.

  49. But this is winding down.

  50. When he's going to move from the region of Galilee,

  51. he's going to go to Tyre and Sidon, some other places.

  52. He's primarily going to be focused, through the rest of the Gospel account of Mark,

  53. on teaching the disciples.

  54. And he'll encounter the world, the lost along the way.

  55. And he'll be teaching the disciples things as that happens.

  56. And we kind of see this heightened level of confrontation

  57. as the religious of the day are getting more and more nervous about the things that Jesus is teaching.

  58. And they confront him here.

  59. As he is allowing his disciples to eat with unwashed hands.

  60. And we'll explain that in a bit more degree in just a moment here.

  61. But I want you to focus your attention in on the very beginning of verse 7.

  62. This is the axiom statement.

  63. This is the thing we really need to draw our attention to and really notice.

  64. Everything else in this text builds around this.

  65. This little phrase,

  66. In vain do they worship me.

  67. In vain do they worship me.

  68. It is possible to worship the right God wrongly.

  69. And this is a frightful reality.

  70. That you could worship the God of Moses,

  71. the God of Abraham,

  72. the God of Jesus,

  73. and do it wrongly,

  74. and find yourself outside the faith,

  75. is a frightful reality.

  76. You see,

  77. they thought that they were worshiping God rightly.

  78. In fact,

  79. their lives were devoted to this.

  80. These Pharisees and the scribes.

  81. The scribes would have been the academic elite.

  82. They would have come down from Jerusalem.

  83. You see,

  84. they were probably called as some elites down.

  85. Help us come and confront this Jesus

  86. because he is confounding our accusations at every turn

  87. and we need your expertise

  88. to come down from Jerusalem,

  89. the center of religious learning.

  90. These people devoted themselves

  91. to what they thought was the right worship of God

  92. in their legalism.

  93. And we see that

  94. Mark's parenthetical statement

  95. that it was not just the Pharisees and the scribes,

  96. but that it was all of Israel

  97. at the beginning of verse 3.

  98. The Pharisees and the scribes

  99. and all of Israel

  100. worshipped in this way.

  101. This small group of Judaism,

  102. the Pharisees numbered about 700 in these days,

  103. had so convinced the nation

  104. that they must follow the traditions of the elders

  105. rather than submit themselves

  106. to the Word of God.

  107. Today we see this happening

  108. with either legalism or liberalism,

  109. right?

  110. With good intention,

  111. but that there's a strain

  112. from the teaching of the Word

  113. and a living that is supposed

  114. will bring us into righteousness

  115. by the outworking,

  116. the showing of what we do

  117. rather than the change that happens

  118. in our hearts.

  119. Matthew 23,

    Matthew 23:13–15

  120. verse 13-15,

  121. Jesus rebukes the scribes and Pharisees.

  122. He says,

  123. But woe to you,

  124. scribes and Pharisees,

  125. hypocrites,

  126. for you shut the kingdom of heaven

  127. in people's faces,

  128. for you neither enter yourselves

  129. nor allow those who would enter

  130. to go in.

  131. Woe to you,

  132. scribes and Pharisees,

  133. hypocrites,

  134. for you travel across sea and land

  135. to make a single proselytite.

  136. And when he becomes a proselytite,

  137. you make him twice as much

  138. a child of hell

  139. as yourselves.

  140. You see the good intention here.

  141. They would do all this traveling

  142. to just bring one convert

  143. into Judaism.

  144. All of this work

  145. to see this accomplished.

  146. And yet,

  147. what they're accomplishing

  148. is the opposite

  149. of what they hoped to do.

  150. Well-intentioned,

  151. but wrong.

  152. To quote the great Wes Shelnut,

  153. the song he once wrote,

  154. which he thinks he picked this up

  155. from someplace else,

  156. they were providing

  157. air conditioning

  158. on a train ride to hell.

  159. Air conditioning

  160. on a train ride to hell.

  161. And the issue at hand here,

  162. really,

  163. concerning the worship of God,

  164. is an issue of heart.

  165. God desires heart worship.

  166. Deuteronomy 6, 4 and 5.

  167. God says,

  168. Hear, O Israel,

  169. the Lord our God,

  170. the Lord is one.

  171. You shall love the Lord your God

  172. with all your heart

  173. and with all your soul

  174. and with all your might.

  175. And we're speaking here

  176. of the heart

  177. as the center of who we are,

  178. our very being.

  179. Don't misunderstand this

  180. as the beating vessel

  181. that pumps blood to our organs.

  182. This is the center

  183. of who we are.

  184. Religion kills.

  185. Outward trappings,

  186. outward appearance

  187. of righteousness

  188. kills.

  189. Its end is destruction

  190. and death.

  191. But heart worship

  192. gives life.

  193. This is how we find

  194. these Pharisees

  195. and these scribes

  196. coming and bringing

  197. this accusation.

  198. Mark chapter 12,

    Mark 12:28–34

  199. verse 28 to 34.

  200. You'd do well to turn there

  201. if you'd like to join me.

  202. Mark chapter 12.

    Mark 12 chapter mention

  203. Here we see

  204. an exception to the dorm.

  205. A scribe who seems

  206. to understand

  207. what Jesus was teaching.

  208. Beginning in verse 28,

  209. and one of the scribes

  210. came up

  211. and heard them

  212. disputing with one another

  213. and seeing that he

  214. answered them well,

  215. asked,

  216. which commandment

  217. is the most important

  218. of all?

  219. Jesus here answers

  220. quotes from Deuteronomy 6,

  221. 4 and 5.

  222. The important is,

  223. Hear, O Israel,

  224. the Lord our God,

  225. the Lord is one.

  226. And you shall love

  227. the Lord your God

  228. with all your heart,

  229. with all your soul,

  230. with all your mind,

  231. and with all your strength.

  232. The second is this,

  233. that you shall love

  234. your neighbor as yourself.

  235. There is no other

  236. commandment greater

  237. than these.

  238. And the scribe said to him,

  239. You are right, teacher.

  240. You have truly said

  241. that he is one

  242. and there is no other

  243. besides him.

  244. And to love him

  245. with all the heart

  246. and with all the understanding

  247. and with all the strength

  248. and to love one's neighbor

  249. as oneself

  250. is much more

  251. than all whole burnt offerings

  252. !

  253. And sacrifices.

  254. And when Jesus saw

  255. that he answered wisely,

  256. he said to him,

  257. You are not far

  258. from the kingdom

  259. of God.

  260. It's an issue of

  261. heart,

  262. right?

  263. We must

  264. be changed

  265. by God,

  266. that we will submit

  267. to his ways.

  268. The things that we do

  269. on the exterior

  270. are the evidences

  271. of a changed heart.

  272. But those evidences

  273. do not change

  274. who we are.

  275. This was not a new issue

  276. just in Jesus' time.

  277. In the past,

  278. this was a problem as well.

  279. It seems to be

  280. kind of knit into

  281. our sinful character

  282. that we would want

  283. to trade the commandments

  284. of God

  285. for the traditions of men.

  286. In the days of Isaiah,

  287. this was true.

  288. Turn to Isaiah 1,

    Isaiah 1:11

  289. verse 11.

  290. Get ready to Bible drill

  291. this morning,

  292. or at least jot down

  293. these references.

  294. Isaiah 1,

  295. beginning in verse 11.

  296. What to me is the multitude

  297. of your sacrifices,

  298. your religion,

  299. says the Lord?

  300. I have had enough

  301. of burnt offerings,

  302. of rams,

  303. and the fat

  304. of well-fed beasts.

  305. I do not delight

  306. in the blood of bulls,

  307. or of lambs,

  308. or of goats.

  309. When you come to appear

  310. before me,

  311. who has required of you

  312. this trampling

  313. of my courts?

  314. Now get,

  315. these were prescribed things.

  316. God had asked them

  317. to do these things.

  318. But he says to them,

  319. who has required of you

  320. this trampling

  321. of my courts?

  322. Bring no more

  323. vain offerings.

  324. Verse 13.

  325. Incense is an abomination

  326. to me.

  327. New moon and Sabbath

  328. and the calling

  329. of convocations.

  330. I cannot endure

  331. iniquity and solemn assembly.

  332. The two can't walk

  333. hand in hand.

  334. Your new moons

  335. and your appointed feasts

  336. my soul hates.

  337. They have become

  338. a burden to me.

  339. I am weary

  340. of bearing them.

  341. When you spread out

  342. your hands,

  343. I will hide my eyes

  344. from you.

  345. Even though you make

  346. many prayers,

  347. I will not listen.

  348. Your hands are full

  349. of blood.

  350. Now here's the answer.

  351. Here's the right way

  352. to worship God.

  353. Wash yourselves.

  354. Make yourselves clean.

  355. We do this by the blood

  356. of Christ.

  357. Remove the evil

  358. of your deeds

  359. from before my eyes.

  360. Cease to do evil.

  361. Learn to do good.

  362. Seek justice.

  363. Correct oppression.

  364. Bring justice

  365. to the fatherless.

  366. Plead the widow's cause.

  367. These are the evidences

  368. of changed hearts.

  369. Come now.

  370. Let us reason together,

  371. says the Lord.

  372. Though your sins

  373. are like scarlet,

  374. they shall be

  375. as white as snow.

  376. Though they are red

  377. like crimson,

  378. they shall become

  379. like wool.

  380. If you are willing

  381. and obedient,

  382. you shall eat

  383. the good of the land.

  384. But if you refuse

  385. and rebel,

  386. you shall be eaten

  387. by the sword,

  388. for the mouth

  389. of the Lord

  390. has spoken.

  391. This was not a new issue

  392. in Jesus' time.

  393. This was a problem

  394. in the days of Isaiah

  395. as well.

  396. It's also a problem

  397. in the days of Malachi

  398. after Israel's return

  399. from exile.

  400. Malachi chapter 2.

    Malachi 2 chapter mention

  401. This is the prophet

  402. right before Matthew

  403. if you don't know

  404. where that's at.

  405. Just before Matthew,

  406. Malachi chapter 2.

    Malachi 2 chapter mention

  407. After God is commended

  408. by the prophet Malachi

  409. the service of Levi,

  410. the first in the

  411. priestly order,

  412. in verse 8 he says

  413. to the priests of that day,

  414. but you have turned aside

  415. from the way.

  416. You have caused many

  417. to stumble

  418. by your instruction.

  419. You have corrupted

  420. the covenant of Levi,

  421. says the Lord of hosts,

  422. and so I make you

  423. despised and abased

  424. before all the people

  425. inasmuch as you do not

  426. keep my ways,

  427. but show partiality

  428. in your instruction.

  429. So it's happening

  430. after the return

  431. from exile.

  432. After Israel had been

  433. taught a great lesson

  434. at the hands

  435. of their enemies,

  436. and they returned,

  437. they'd been restored

  438. by God,

  439. it was still an issue.

  440. It was an issue

  441. in the days of Peter

  442. and Paul,

  443. after Jesus' death

  444. and his resurrection.

  445. Turn to 1 Timothy

    1 Timothy 6 chapter mention

  446. chapter 6.

  447. 1 Timothy 6.

  448. 1 Timothy 6.

  449. 1 Timothy 6.

  450. 1 Timothy 6.

  451. Verses 3 through 5.

  452. If anyone teaches

  453. a different doctrine

  454. and does not agree

  455. with the sound words

  456. of our Lord Jesus Christ

  457. and the teaching

  458. that accords with godliness,

  459. he is puffed up

  460. with conceit

  461. and understands nothing.

  462. He has an unhealthy craving

  463. for controversy

  464. and for quarrels

  465. about words

  466. which produce envy,

  467. dissensions,

  468. slander,

  469. evil suspicions,

  470. and constant friction

  471. among people

  472. who are depraved in mind

  473. and deprived of the truth,

  474. imagining that godliness

  475. is a means of gain.

  476. So men in this day

  477. were already preaching

  478. what we would call

  479. the prosperity gospel.

  480. And the warning to Timothy

  481. is to shut them up.

  482. This is not truth.

  483. Quiet them.

  484. Peter experienced it too.

  485. 2 Peter 2.

  486. Verses 1-3.

  487. But false prophets

  488. also arose among the people.

  489. Just as there will be

  490. false teachers among you

  491. who will secretly bring in

  492. destructive heresies,

  493. even denying the master

  494. who bought them,

  495. bringing upon themselves

  496. swift destruction.

  497. And many will follow.

  498. Many will follow

  499. their sensuality.

  500. And because of them

  501. the way of truth

  502. will be blasphemed.

  503. And in their greed

  504. they will exploit you

  505. with false words.

  506. Their condemnation

  507. from long ago

  508. is not idle.

  509. And their destruction

  510. is not asleep.

  511. It was happening there

  512. in this case as well.

  513. And was predicted

  514. that it would happen

  515. both by Peter

  516. in the text we just read

  517. as well as by Paul

  518. in 2 Timothy 4.

  519. Verses 3-4.

  520. Paul stated

  521. this would be the case.

  522. For the time is coming

  523. when people

  524. will not endure

  525. sound teaching

  526. but having itching ears

  527. they will accumulate

  528. for themselves

  529. teachers to suit

  530. their own passions

  531. and will turn away

  532. from listening to the truth

  533. and wander off

  534. into myths.

  535. This is a problem

  536. in our day.

  537. People who have

  538. wandered from

  539. the truth of God.

  540. People who have

  541. wandered away

  542. into myths.

  543. People who have

  544. built religion

  545. which kills

  546. which damns people

  547. rather than

  548. bringing them

  549. to Christ

  550. and having their hearts

  551. be changed.

  552. Now

  553. let's take a look

  554. at our text

  555. and let's see

  556. three ways

  557. that the Pharisees

  558. and all the Jews

  559. worshipped God

  560. in vain.

  561. But don't miss

  562. that this has

  563. application for our day.

  564. Don't put this

  565. off and distant

  566. for the Pharisees

  567. and all the Jews.

  568. This was a problem

  569. for them.

  570. The reason I just read

  571. to you all those texts

  572. was to show you

  573. that this is a sweeping

  574. problem.

  575. It existed

  576. way back then

  577. and it certainly

  578. exists now.

  579. So three ways

  580. that the Pharisees

  581. and all the Jews

  582. worshipped God

  583. in vain.

  584. In vain

  585. do they

  586. worship me.

  587. Number one

  588. by being

  589. hypocritical.

  590. The first part

  591. of verse 6

  592. and he said to them

  593. well did Isaiah

  594. prophesy of you

  595. hypocrites

  596. as it is written.

  597. He constantly

  598. was railing

  599. against them

  600. this accusation

  601. that they were

  602. hypocrites

  603. that they said

  604. one thing

  605. and they did

  606. quite the opposite

  607. that they set

  608. a standard up

  609. for the people

  610. of Israel

  611. to live to

  612. that they themselves

  613. could not keep

  614. and they did this

  615. by mounding laws

  616. that were called

  617. hedge laws

  618. on top of

  619. the law of God.

  620. In order to

  621. prevent people

  622. from breaking

  623. the law of God

  624. they added all

  625. these nuances

  626. all these extra

  627. things

  628. they stacked

  629. them up

  630. they piled it

  631. around

  632. so that no one

  633. could possibly

  634. keep all of them

  635. and they missed

  636. the very point

  637. of the law of God.

  638. The very point

  639. of it being

  640. that we are meant

  641. to live righteous

  642. before him

  643. and we can't

  644. so we need

  645. a savior.

  646. Every road

  647. in the scriptures

  648. leads to

  649. Golgotha.

  650. The law

  651. was meant

  652. to show us

  653. our need

  654. of Christ

  655. but they

  656. became legalists

  657. they began

  658. to add on

  659. extra things

  660. all around

  661. do we not

  662. know people

  663. like that

  664. this day?

  665. Matthew chapter 23

    Matthew 23:25–28

  666. verse 25

  667. through 28

  668. Woe to you

  669. scribes

  670. and Pharisees

  671. hypocrites

  672. for you clean

  673. the outside

  674. of the cup

  675. and the plate

  676. but inside

  677. they are full

  678. of greed

  679. and self-indulgence

  680. you blind

  681. Pharisee

  682. first clean

  683. the inside

  684. of the cup

  685. and the plate

  686. that the outside

  687. also may be

  688. clean

  689. clean your heart

  690. so that your actions

  691. will be clean

  692. is what he's saying

  693. to them

  694. verse 27

  695. Woe to you

  696. scribes

  697. and Pharisees

  698. hypocrites

  699. for you are like

  700. whitewashed tombs

  701. which outwardly

  702. appear beautiful

  703. but within

  704. are full of

  705. dead people's bones

  706. and all uncleanliness

  707. so you also

  708. outwardly appear

  709. righteous to others

  710. but within

  711. you are full

  712. of hypocrisy

  713. and lawlessness

  714. their hearts

  715. were not changed

  716. they did a lot

  717. of things

  718. that seemed

  719. righteous

  720. on the outside

  721. but they were not

  722. because they were

  723. done for their glory

  724. and not for the glory

  725. of the Lord and Savior

  726. Jesus Christ

  727. John 14

  728. 15

  729. Jesus says

  730. if you love me

  731. you will keep

  732. my commandments

  733. so get it right

  734. that if our hearts

  735. are changed

  736. if we have been

  737. compelled by God

  738. to believe in Christ

  739. and our desires

  740. are now being shaped

  741. into his desires

  742. and we love Jesus

  743. for the reality

  744. of the gospel

  745. all these songs

  746. we sing together

  747. that are so gospel

  748. centric

  749. are also Christo

  750. centric

  751. that we might praise

  752. the one who redeemed us

  753. if we love him

  754. we'll keep his commandments

  755. we'll do the things

  756. he told us to do

  757. the commandment keeping

  758. is a result

  759. of the love

  760. of the changed heart

  761. not the other way

  762. around

  763. now at this point

  764. Jesus' statement here

  765. is so scathing

  766. because none of us

  767. can say

  768. that we keep

  769. Jesus' commandments

  770. as perfectly

  771. can we?

  772. I certainly cannot

  773. right?

  774. is that not great evidence

  775. that I don't love him

  776. at all?

  777. 1 John chapter 1

    1 John 1 chapter mention

  778. gives us some

  779. better understanding

  780. I think

  781. of this

  782. bring some comfort

  783. to your Christian souls

  784. 1 John chapter 1

    1 John 1 chapter mention

  785. beginning of verse 5

  786. this is the message

  787. we have heard from him

  788. and proclaim to you

  789. that God is light

  790. and in him

  791. is no darkness

  792. at all

  793. he is perfect

  794. he is righteous

  795. he is holy

  796. if we say we have

  797. fellowship with him

  798. while we walk

  799. in darkness

  800. we lie

  801. and do not practice

  802. the truth

  803. but if we walk

  804. in the light

  805. as he is in the light

  806. we have fellowship

  807. with one another

  808. and the blood

  809. of Jesus his son

  810. cleanses us

  811. from all sin

  812. now get

  813. he's talking about

  814. habitual practice here

  815. right?

  816. John's talking about

  817. a person who walks

  818. in darkness

  819. it is the characteristic

  820. of their life

  821. they walk in darkness

  822. versus the 1 in verse 7

  823. the characteristic

  824. of their life

  825. is that they walk

  826. in the light

  827. notice the summation

  828. of verse 7

  829. the blood of Jesus

  830. his son

  831. cleanses us

  832. from all sin

  833. verse 8

  834. if we say we have

  835. no sin

  836. you find the Pharisees

  837. would find themselves

  838. this way

  839. the legalists of our day

  840. would find themselves

  841. in this position

  842. if we say we have

  843. no sin

  844. we deceive ourselves

  845. and the truth

  846. is not in us

  847. we don't have

  848. a clear picture

  849. of who we are

  850. we don't know

  851. that we need

  852. a savior

  853. verse 9

  854. if we confess our sins

  855. praise God

  856. he is faithful

  857. and just

  858. to forgive us

  859. our sins

  860. and to cleanse us

  861. from all unrighteousness

  862. if we say we have

  863. not sinned

  864. we make him a liar

  865. and his word

  866. is not in us

  867. in some ways

  868. we're all hypocrites

  869. aren't we?

  870. we say one thing

  871. and practice another

  872. it's very often

  873. that we don't

  874. practice what we preach

  875. but the regenerate heart

  876. the one that is

  877. close to God

  878. the person who is pursuing

  879. God knows this

  880. full well

  881. and is humbled by it

  882. throws themselves

  883. on his grace

  884. and mercy

  885. knows that we have

  886. a high standard

  887. that we've been called to

  888. that we cannot keep

  889. apart from his work

  890. in our life

  891. it is true that God

  892. uses crooked sticks

  893. to draw straight lines

  894. the religious elite

  895. of this day

  896. were self-proclaimed

  897. straight sticks

  898. drawing lines

  899. that they supposed

  900. were straight

  901. but they were horribly

  902. mistaken

  903. they thought they were

  904. doing this on their own

  905. under their own

  906. power

  907. yes those of you

  908. who like propaganda

  909. that's where that came from

  910. in vain do they worship me

  911. by being hypocritical

  912. in vain do they worship me

  913. number two

  914. by having their hearts

  915. distant from God

  916. the second part of verse six

  917. this people

  918. honors me with their lips

  919. but their heart

  920. is far

  921. from me

  922. turn to the book of Hosea

  923. chapter six

  924. I hope by the time

  925. you young people

  926. leave Christ family church

  927. you love the Old Testament

  928. and I hope that none of you

  929. only carry a New Testament

  930. with you

  931. to church

  932. that's only a part

  933. of the scriptures

  934. Hosea chapter six

  935. verses one

  936. through six

  937. now there's just been

  938. this accusation made

  939. to the people of Israel

  940. by the prophet Hosea

  941. if you read there

  942. at the end of chapter five

  943. and this is the response

  944. to it

  945. okay now

  946. I want you to

  947. I want you to know

  948. that it's going to sound

  949. really good for the first

  950. three verses

  951. I'm going to tell you

  952. why it's not

  953. verse one

  954. come let us return

  955. to the Lord

  956. for he has torn us

  957. that he may heal us

  958. he has struck us down

  959. and he will bind us up

  960. after two days

  961. he will revive us

  962. on the third day

  963. he will raise us up

  964. that we may live

  965. before him

  966. let us know

  967. let us press on

  968. to know the Lord

  969. his going out

  970. is sure as the dawn

  971. he will come to us

  972. as the showers

  973. as the spring rains

  974. that water

  975. the earth

  976. this is not

  977. true repentance

  978. and God's going to give us

  979. a clue to that

  980. here in a moment

  981. through the

  982. through the prophet Hosea

  983. right

  984. but what they are doing

  985. is expecting something

  986. of God

  987. without first repenting

  988. of their sin

  989. right

  990. they are just saying

  991. yeah

  992. time and time again

  993. God has restored

  994. his people

  995. time and time again

  996. we mess up

  997. God came back

  998. this is a

  999. let's sin so that grace

  1000. may abound

  1001. type of attitude

  1002. which Paul said

1003. of may it never be

  1004. emphatically

  1005. we cannot go on

  1006. living our lives

  1007. that way

  1008. if we are thankful

  1009. for what God

  1010. has done for us

  1011. we will live

  1012. righteously

  1013. as a response

  1014. to it

  1015. right

  1016. look at his response

  1017. here

  1018. verse 4

  1019. this is God

  1020. speaking to

  1021. the people of Israel

  1022. because of their response

  1023. Hosea chapter 6

    Hosea 6:4

  1024. verse 4

  1025. what should I do

  1026. with you

  1027. oh Ephraim

  1028. what should I do

  1029. with you

  1030. oh Judah

  1031. your love

1032. is like a morning cloud

  1033. like the dew

  1034. that goes early away

  1035. therefore I have

  1036. hewn them

  1037. by the prophets

  1038. I have slain them

  1039. by the words

  1040. of my mouth

  1041. and my judgment

  1042. goes forth

  1043. as the light

  1044. for I desire

  1045. steadfast love

  1046. and not sacrifice

  1047. the knowledge

  1048. of God

  1049. rather than burnt

  1050. offerings

  1051. see that steadfast love

  1052. that he requires

  1053. our hearts

  1054. being close

  1055. to God

  1056. a desire to commune

  1057. with him

  1058. and meet with him

  1059. and live appropriately

  1060. in response

  1061. to that

  1062. Psalm of David

  1063. Psalm 28

    Psalms 28:7

  1064. verse 7

  1065. David writes

1066. the Lord is my strength

  1067. and my shield

  1068. in him

  1069. my heart

  1070. trusts

  1071. and I am helped

  1072. my heart exults

  1073. and with my song

  1074. I give thanks

  1075. to him

  1076. if our hearts

  1077. are thankful

  1078. if our hearts

  1079. are near to God

  1080. our lives

  1081. will reflect that

  1082. our lives

  1083. will be the song

1084. in which we give thanks

  1085. to our God

  1086. in Hebrews chapter 10

    Hebrews 10 chapter mention

1087. first part of verse 22

  1088. says

1089. in light of the gospel truth

1090. that the writer of Hebrews

  1091. has presented so far

  1092. he says

  1093. let us draw near

  1094. with a true heart

  1095. in full assurance

  1096. of faith

  1097. it's a matter of heart

  1098. and these people

  1099. these scribes

  1100. and these Pharisees

  1101. had hearts

  1102. that were distant

  1103. from God

  1104. thirdly

1105. in vain do they worship

  1106. me

  1107. one by being hypocritical

1108. two by having their hearts

  1109. distant from God

  1110. three by placing

  1111. the tradition of men

  1112. above

  1113. the commandment

  1114. of God

  1115. and you see that

  1116. in this quote

  1117. from Isaiah 29

  1118. 13

  1119. the last half

  1120. of verse 7

  1121. teaching as doctrines

  1122. truths

  1123. doctrine not words

  1124. simply means truths

  1125. the commandments

  1126. of men

  1127. now they had done

  1128. all types of things

  1129. as I mentioned previously

1130. and here we actually see

1131. in the rest of our text

  1132. we see

  1133. Mark's commentary

  1134. on that

  1135. in the parenthetical

  1136. from verse 3

  1137. and verse 4

  1138. right

  1139. they weren't talking

  1140. about them eating

  1141. with dirty hands

1142. it wasn't that they had

  1143. soiled hands

1144. and they just couldn't believe

  1145. that they would possibly

  1146. do that

  1147. because there was

  1148. Old Testament commandment

  1149. to clean your hands

  1150. right

1151. for the sake of staying healthy

1152. and we all know that

1153. they knew it in this day

  1154. as well

  1155. right

1156. you don't go do something

  1157. real nasty

  1158. and then go eat

  1159. with your hands

  1160. right

  1161. not a good idea

1162. I hope you all know that

  1163. right

  1164. not a good idea

  1165. this is not what

  1166. they're talking about

  1167. the disciples weren't

  1168. sitting around with

  1169. with gross hands

  1170. in that way

  1171. but they were speaking

  1172. of this further tradition

1173. that they had stacked on

  1174. just look at his

  1175. explanation

1176. and I like to read it

  1177. with a bit of

  1178. sarcasm

  1179. for the Pharisees

  1180. and all the Jews

  1181. did not eat

  1182. unless they washed

  1183. their hands

  1184. holding the tradition

  1185. of the elders

  1186. and when they come

  1187. from the marketplace

  1188. they don't eat

  1189. unless they wash

  1190. and there are many

  1191. other traditions

  1192. that they observe

  1193. such as the washing

  1194. of cups and pots

  1195. and copper vessels

  1196. and dining couches

  1197. it's like he's marked

1198. going and on and on

  1199. and on and on

  1200. and on

  1201. all these other things

  1202. that they do

  1203. that's his commentary

  1204. there

  1205. and then Jesus shows

  1206. them another example

  1207. another way in which

  1208. that they've done this

  1209. and remember that he

1210. sums up at the end

  1211. of verse 13

  1212. and many such

  1213. things

  1214. you do

  1215. this is not the

  1216. only two cases

  1217. in which they did

  1218. this

  1219. they did this

  1220. in many

  1221. many ways

  1222. and his summation

  1223. is

  1224. you leave the command

  1225. of God

  1226. hold the traditions

  1227. of men

1228. and he said to them

1229. you have a fine way

  1230. of rejecting the command

  1231. of God

  1232. in order to establish

  1233. your tradition

  1234. for Moses said

  1235. honor your father

  1236. or mother

  1237. and whoever reviles

  1238. father or mother

  1239. must surely die

  1240. so Moses gave

  1241. by God

  1242. a commandment

  1243. to honor

  1244. your father

  1245. and mother

  1246. and that if you're

  1247. sinful and you don't

  1248. the end of that

  1249. is death

  1250. but you say

  1251. these religious elite

  1252. you say

  1253. if a man tells

  1254. his father or mother

  1255. whatever you have

  1256. gained from me

  1257. is Corban

  1258. that is

  1259. we get the

  1260. again Mark's

  1261. little commentary

  1262. that is

  1263. given to God

  1264. this was a

  1265. common practice

  1266. this term

  1267. was similar

  1268. to a term

  1269. that referred

  1270. to the

  1271. temple treasury

  1272. and so it

  1273. became a

  1274. kind of oath

  1275. you could take

  1276. monies that you

  1277. had

  1278. and you could

  1279. set it aside

  1280. for the expressed

  1281. intent of giving

  1282. it to the temple

  1283. service

  1284. whether in your

  1285. life or when you

  1286. died it would be

  1287. set aside

  1288. for that purpose

  1289. so what this

  1290. person would be

  1291. doing

  1292. saying to his

  1293. father or mother

  1294. rather than caring

  1295. for them

  1296. in their older age

  1297. when they were no

  1298. longer able to

  1299. produce for themselves

  1300. they didn't have

  1301. 401ks or any

  1302. other types of

  1303. retirement investing

  1304. in this day

  1305. they relied on

  1306. the younger

  1307. people to take

  1308. care of them

  1309. so they said

  1310. to them

  1311. whatever you

  1312. would gain

  1313. from me

  1314. is Corban

  1315. I'm not going

  1316. to give it

  1317. to you

  1318. I'm going

  1319. to give it

  1320. to the temple

  1321. service

  1322. instead

  1323. then you

  1324. no longer

  1325. verse 12

  1326. permit him

  1327. do anything

  1328. for his

  1329. father or

  1330. mother

  1331. thus making

  1332. void the

  1333. word of

  1334. God

  1335. by a tradition

  1336. that you've

  1337. handed down

  1338. and many

  1339. such things

  1340. you do

  1341. so the

  1342. explanation

  1343. this is the

  1344. accusation

  1345. that Jesus

  1346. makes back

  1347. in response

  1348. that they

  1349. had taken

  1350. these teachings

  1351. of men

  1352. and placed

  1353. them above

  1354. the word

  1355. of God

  1356. beloved this

  1357. happens so

  1358. so much

  1359. in our

  1360. day

  1361. I have

  1362. as I

  1363. come to

  1364. preach the

  1365. word of

  1366. God

  1367. I don't

  1368. think I'm

  1369. the best

  1370. preacher of

  1371. the word

  1372. of God

  1373. there are

  1374. many men

  1375. more talented

  1376. than I am

  1377. more full

  1378. of the spirit

  1379. quite often

  1380. than I am

  1381. but I gotta tell

  1382. you I come to

  1383. this thing

  1384. fearfully

  1385. I do not

  1386. want to

  1387. say something

  1388. that would

  1389. cause you

  1390. to follow

  1391. me and

  1392. not follow

  1393. our risen

  1394. and reigning

  1395. Lord

  1396. the word

  1397. of God

  1398. points you

  1399. to him

  1400. you ever

  1401. wonder why

  1402. all my

  1403. sermons

  1404. are so

  1405. text heavy

  1406. it's because

  1407. I just

  1408. don't know

  1409. what to

  1410. say

  1411. I just

  1412. don't feel

  1413. like I

  1414. have anything

  1415. really good

  1416. to say

  1417. to you

  1418. at all

  1419. but the

  1420. word

  1421. of God

  1422. speaks

  1423. to our

  1424. hearts

  1425. and our

  1426. lives

  1427. this is

  1428. why

  1429. because I

  1430. see this

  1431. rampant

  1432. in our

  1433. culture

  1434. I see

  1435. pastor

  1436. worship

  1437. see guys

  1438. saying

  1439. look like

  1440. me

  1441. right

  1442. that's

  1443. that's

  1444. hypocrisy

  1445. that's

  1446. legalism

  1447. look like

  1448. me

  1449. I'm

  1450. ahead

  1451. of you

  1452. watch me

  1453. watch what

  1454. I do

  1455. this is

  1456. the way

  1457. I treat

  1458. my wife

  1459. this is

  1460. the way

  1461. I eat

  1462. food

  1463. this is

  1464. what I

  1465. exercise

  1466. this is

  1467. all the

  1468. things

  1469. we get

  1470. all the

  1471. steps

  1472. and all

  1473. the

  1474. processes

  1475. for being

  1476. more like

  1477. the pastor

  1478. I don't

  1479. want you

  1480. to be

  1481. like me

  1482. I'm a

  1483. sinner

  1484. I screw

  1485. up all

  1486. the time

  1487. I want

  1488. you to

  1489. be like

  1490. Christ

  1491. I don't

  1492. want to

  1493. help

  1494. point

  1495. you

  1496. to

  1497. that

  1498. very

  1499. thing

  1500. this is

  1501. why

  1502. I mean

  1503. literally

  1504. I tremble

  1505. before I

  1506. preach

  1507. sometimes

  1508. I'm a

  1509. type 1

  1510. diabetic

  1511. I think

  1512. I'm low

  1513. many of

  1514. you have

  1515. caught me

  1516. drinking grape

  1517. juice

  1518. in the

  1519. back

  1520. the juice

  1521. we use

  1522. for the

  1523. Lord's

  1524. supper

  1525. because I

  1526. think

  1527. I'm low

  1528. and more

  1529. often than

  1530. not

  1531. I'm just

  1532. nervous

  1533. because it

  1534. has such

  1535. weight

  1536. there's so

  1537. much

  1538. value

  1539. for your

  1540. living

  1541. in it

  1542. I don't

  1543. want you

  1544. to hear

  1545. me

  1546. if it

  1547. were

  1548. possible

  1549. for me

  1550. to

  1551. disappear

  1552. from the

  1553. stage

  1554. and you

  1555. guys

  1556. just

  1557. hear

  1558. the

  1559. word

  1560. of

  1561. God

  1562. I

  1563. would

  1564. do

  1565. it

  1566. I

  1567. would

  1568. absolutely

  1569. do

  1570. it

  1571. what

  1572. the

  1573. Bible

  1574. is brutal

  1575. absolutely

  1576. brutal

  1577. the book

  1578. of Jude

  1579. verses 12

  1580. and 13

  1581. speaking of

  1582. false

  1583. teachers

  1584. says

  1585. these are

  1586. hidden

  1587. reefs

  1588. at your

  1589. love

  1590. feast

  1591. as they

  1592. feast

  1593. with you

  1594. without

  1595. fear

  1596. shepherds

  1597. feeding

  1598. themselves

  1599. waterless

  1600. clouds

  1601. swept

  1602. along

  1603. by

  1604. winds

  1605. fruitless

  1606. trees

  1607. in late

  1608. autumn

  1609. twice

  1610. dead

  1611. uprooted

  1612. wild

  1613. waves

  1614. of the

  1615. sea

  1616. casting

  1617. up the

  1618. foam

  1619. of their

  1620. own

  1621. shame

  1622. wandering

  1623. stars

  1624. it's like

  1625. he can't

  1626. get enough

  1627. adjective

  1628. to explain

  1629. these type

  1630. of men

  1631. for whom

  1632. the gloom

  1633. of utter

  1634. darkness

  1635. has been

  1636. reserved

  1637. forever

  1638. Charles

  1639. Spurgeon

  1640. said of

  1641. this text

  1642. if I

  1643. must be

  1644. lost

  1645. let it

  1646. be

  1647. anyhow

  1648. rather

  1649. than

  1650. as

  1651. an apostate

  1652. an apostate

  1653. is one

  1654. who falls

  1655. away

  1656. from the

  1657. truth

  1658. who's

  1659. walked

  1660. away

  1661. from the

  1662. truth

  1663. it's

  1664. one

  1665. who

  1666. teaches

  1667. the

  1668. traditions

  1669. of

  1670. men

  1671. over

  1672. the

  1673. commands

  1674. of

  1675. God

  1676. if

  1677. there

  1678. be

  1679. any

  1680. distinction

  1681. among

  1682. the

  1683. damned

  1684. those

  1685. have

  1686. it

  1687. who

  1688. are

  1689. wandering

  1690. stars

  1691. trees

  1692. plucked

  1693. up

  1694. by

  1695. the

  1696. roots

  1697. twice

  1698. dead

  1699. for whom

  1700. Jude

  1701. tells

  1702. us

  1703. is

  1704. reserved

  1705. the

  1706. blackness

  1707. of

  1708. darkness

  1709. forever

  1710. reserved

  1711. as if

  1712. nobody

  1713. else

  1714. were

  1715. qualified

  1716. to

  1717. occupy

  1718. that

  1719. place

  1720. but

  1721. themselves

  1722. they

  1723. are

  1724. to

  1725. inhabit

  1726. the

  1727. darkest

  1728. hottest

  1729. place

  1730. because

  1731. they

  1732. forsook

  1733. the

  1734. Lord

  1735. in

  1736. vain

  1737. do

  1738. they

  1739. worship

  1740. me

  1741. by

  1742. being

  1743. hypocritical

  1744. by

  1745. having

  1746. their

  1747. hearts

  1748. distant

  1749. from

  1750. God

  1751. by

  1752. placing

  1753. the

  1754. tradition

  1755. of

  1756. men

  1757. above

  1758. the

  1759. commandments

  1760. of

  1761. God

  1762. and so

  1763. what

  1764. does

  1765. this

  1766. mean

  1767. for

  1768. us

  1769. today

  1770. because

  1771. it

  1772. does

  1773. the

  1774. word

  1775. of

  1776. God

  1777. was

  1778. written

  1779. then

  1780. but

  1781. it

  1782. was

  1783. written

  1784. for

  1785. us

  1786. firstly

  1787. be

  1788. sure

  1789. that

  1790. you

  1791. were

  1792. not

  1793. apostate

  1794. be

  1795. sure

  1796. that

  1797. you're

  1798. not

  1799. found

  1800. outside

  1801. the

  1802. faith

  1803. we

  1804. live

  1805. in a

  1806. Christian

  1807. culture

  1808. to

  1809. be

  1810. sure

  1811. and

  1812. many

  1813. of

  1814. you

  1815. may

  1816. come

  1817. to

  1818. church

  1819. thinking

  1820. that

  1821. that's

  1822. what

  1823. gains

  1824. you

  1825. acceptance

  1826. to

  1827. heaven

  1828. thinking

  1829. that

  1830. if

  1831. you

  1832. can

  1833. just

  1834. stack

  1835. more

  1836. good

  1837. things

  1838. up

  1839. than

  1840. bad

  1841. things

  1842. up

  1843. that

  1844. God

  1845. will

  1846. put

  1847. that

  1848. on

  1849. a

  1850. scale

  1851. and

  1852. accept

  1853. you

  1854. into

  1855. heaven

  1856. you

  1857. must

  1858. know

  1859. that

  1860. apart

  1861. from

  1862. Christ

  1863. you

  1864. are

  1865. utterly

  1866. sinful

  1867. everything

  1868. you

  1869. do

  1870. even

  1871. the

  1872. things

  1873. you

  1874. may

  1875. see

  1876. as

  1877. good

  1878. attending

  1879. church

  1880. is

  1881. evil

  1882. apart

  1883. from

  1884. Christ

  1885. it

  1886. is

  1887. from

  1888. Christ

  1889. that

  1890. we

  1891. are

  1892. able

  1893. to

  1894. have

  1895. faith

  1896. and

  1897. anything

  1898. not

  1899. of

  1900. faith

  1901. is

  1902. sin

  1903. you

  1904. must

  1905. understand

  1906. this

  1907. you

  1908. must

  1909. stand

  1910. before

  1911. God

  1912. one

  1913. day

  1914. and

  1915. claim

  1916. only

  1917. the

  1918. excellencies

  1919. of

  1920. Christ

  1921. for

  1922. your

  1923. admission

  1924. !

  1925. into

  1926. his

  1927. kingdom

  1928. that's

  1929. all

  1930. we've

  1931. got

  1932. that

  1933. is

  1934. all

  1935. we've

  1936. got

  1937. be

  1938. sure

  1939. that

  1940. you

  1941. are

  1942. not

  1943. apostate

  1944. that

  1945. you

  1946. don't

  1947. simply

  1948. go

  1949. through

  1950. motions

  1951. thinking

  1952. that

  1953. it

  1954. gains

  1955. you

  1956. godliness

  1957. secondly

  1958. correct

  1959. the

  1960. one

  1961. who

  1962. is

  1963. apostate

  1964. correct

  1965. the

  1966. one

  1967. who

  1968. is

  1969. apostate

  1970. we

  1971. need

  1972. to

  1973. learn

  1974. something

  1975. from

  1976. our

  1977. Lord

  1978. here

  1979. and

  1980. the

  1981. way

  1982. in

  1983. which

  1984. he

  1985. deals

  1986. with

  1987. his

  1988. accusers

  1989. now

  1990. remember

  1991. that

  1992. this

  1993. is

  1994. compassionate

  1995. Jesus

  1996. right

  1997. this

  1998. is

  1999. the

  2000. Jesus

  2001. who

  2002. was

  2003. trying

  2004. to

  2005. get

  2006. away

  2007. from

  2008. the

  2009. crowds

  2010. because

  2011. he

  2012. had

  2013. just

  2014. learned

  2015. that

  2016. his

  2017. predecessor

  2018. and

  2019. cousin

  2020. John

  2021. the

  2022. Baptist

  2023. had been

  2024. beheaded

  2025. he was

  2026. trying to

  2027. get

  2028. away

  2029. to

  2030. a

  2031. quiet

  2032. place

  2033. and

  2034. this

  2035. large

  2036. crowd

  2037. followed

  2038. him

  2039. around

  2040. 20 to

  2041. 25

  2042. thousand

  2043. people

  2044. I

  2045. would

  2046. have

  2047. been

  2048. so

  2049. annoyed

  2050. by

  2051. them

  2052. but

  2053. he

  2054. had

  2055. compassion

  2056. on

  2057. them

  2058. he

  2059. saw

  2060. !

  2061. them

  2062. as

  2063. sheep

  2064. without

  2065. a

  2066. shepherd

  2067. right

  2068. he

  2069. sat

  2070. them

  2071. down

  2072. and

  2073. not

  2074. only

  2075. gave

  2076. them

  2077. the

  2078. things

  2079. they

  2080. needed

  2081. for

  2082. spiritual

  2083. life

  2084. but

  2085. also

  2086. gave

  2087. them

  2088. the

  2089. things

  2090. they

  2091. needed

  2092. for

  2093. physical

  2094. life

  2095. this

  2096. is

  2097. the

  2098. Jesus

  2099. that

  2100. healed

  2101. indiscriminately

  2102. people

  2103. came up

  2104. and touched

  2105. !

  2106. Him

  2107. and

  2108. were

  2109. healed

  2110. he

  2111. went

  2112. around

  2113. making

  2114. people's

  2115. lives

  2116. better

  2117. constantly

  2118. this

  2119. is

  2120. the

  2121. Jesus

  2122. who

  2123. spoke

  2124. words

  2125. of

  2126. life

  2127. to

  2128. people

  2129. right

  2130. this

  2131. is

  2132. that

  2133. Jesus

  2134. compassionate

  2135. in

  2136. every

  2137. way

  2138. but

  2139. when

  2140. to

  2141. you

  2142. scribes

  2143. and

  2144. Pharisees

  2145. you

  2146. hypocrites

  2147. brood of

  2148. vipers

  2149. because

  2150. what they

  2151. were doing

  2152. was evil

  2153. in the

  2154. greatest sense

  2155. because they

  2156. were leading

  2157. so many

  2158. astray

  2159. I don't know

  2160. what that looks

  2161. like for your

  2162. life

  2163. I would

  2164. not encourage

  2165. you to go

  2166. and confront

  2167. preachers

  2168. that you know

  2169. don't preach

  2170. the word of

  2171. God

  2172. well

  2173. probably

  2174. not your

  2175. place

  2176. I don't

  2177. know what

  2178. it means

  2179. exactly

  2180. for my

  2181. life

  2182. but

  2183. beloved

  2184. we have

  2185. to be

  2186. more

  2187. bold

  2188. in living

  2189. the truth

  2190. of the

  2191. gospel

  2192. speaking

  2193. the truth

  2194. of the

  2195. gospel

  2196. and

  2197. correcting

  2198. it

  2199. there

  2200. are

  2201. thousands

  2202. hundreds

  2203. of

  2204. thousands

  2205. possibly

  2206. millions

  2207. of

  2208. people

  2209. in

  2210. just

  2211. our

  2212. region

  2213. being led

  2214. astray

  2215. by false

  2216. teachers

  2217. so number

  2218. one be sure

  2219. that you're

  2220. not apostate

  2221. second correct

  2222. the one

  2223. who is

  2224. apostate

  2225. thirdly

  2226. do not

  2227. miss the

  2228. lesson

  2229. for our

  2230. lives

  2231. now if

  2232. you are

  2233. found

  2234. in

  2235. Christ

  2236. you are

  2237. sure

  2238. that you're

  2239. in the

  2240. faith

  2241. you can

  2242. say with

  2243. confidence

  2244. that you're

  2245. not

  2246. apostate

  2247. praise

  2248. God

  2249. for that

  2250. as a

  2251. work

  2252. of his

  2253. on your

  2254. behalf

  2255. praise

  2256. God

  2257. for it

  2258. but yet

  2259. we still

  2260. act like

  2261. the Pharisees

  2262. in many

  2263. ways

  2264. we can

  2265. still tend

  2266. towards this

  2267. because we

  2268. still have

  2269. our sinful

  2270. nature

  2271. we can

  2272. tend to want

  2273. to make

  2274. our list

  2275. and simply

  2276. check them

  2277. off

  2278. this is so

  2279. tempting

  2280. right

  2281. just give me a

  2282. list

  2283. it'd be so

  2284. much easier

  2285. right

  2286. just give me a

  2287. list

  2288. it wouldn't

  2289. require my

  2290. devotion

  2291. it wouldn't

  2292. require my

  2293. relationship

  2294. with the

  2295. Lord

  2296. right

  2297. just give me

  2298. the list

  2299. I can do

  2300. the list

  2301. it's no

  2302. problem

  2303. God draws

  2304. us into

  2305. relationship

  2306. with him

  2307. because he

  2308. is the

  2309. best thing

  2310. he is the

  2311. great end

  2312. to everything

  2313. that we

  2314. do

  2315. that we

  2316. might know

  2317. him

  2318. experience

  2319. him

  2320. and make

  2321. him known

  2322. this is why

  2323. we have

  2324. life

  2325. this is why

  2326. we're not

  2327. already taken

  2328. up with

  2329. him

  2330. that's why

  2331. we're

  2332. experiencing

  2333. him in

  2334. greater

  2335. and more

  2336. unfolding

  2337. ways

  2338. if you

  2339. all don't

  2340. know about

  2341. the man

  2342. George

  2343. Mueller

  2344. I would

  2345. really

  2346. really

  2347. commend

  2348. any of

  2349. his

  2350. biographies

  2351. to you

  2352. particularly

  2353. George

  2354. Mueller

  2355. of Bristol

  2356. written by

  2357. a man

  2358. named

  2359. wonderful

  2360. read

  2361. listen to

  2362. this quote

  2363. from him

  2364. after he's

  2365. recorded

  2366. Mueller going

  2367. through an

  2368. experience in

  2369. his life

  2370. where he

  2371. became more

  2372. devoted to

  2373. the word

  2374. of God

  2375. as the

  2376. supreme

  2377. authority

  2378. in his

  2379. life

  2380. and I

  2381. just as

  2382. an aside

  2383. tell you

  2384. that he

  2385. was preaching

  2386. at a

  2387. meeting

  2388. and afterwards

  2389. three ladies

  2390. were having

  2391. a conversation

  2392. about believers

  2393. baptism

  2394. and they

  2395. asked him

  2396. what he

  2397. thought

  2398. and he

  2399. said

  2400. I see

  2401. no need

  2402. to be

  2403. baptized

  2404. as a

  2405. believer

  2406. because I

  2407. was

  2408. baptized

  2409. as an

  2410. infant

  2411. and one

  2412. lady said

  2413. have you

  2414. ever searched

  2415. the scriptures

  2416. on this

  2417. matter

  2418. and he

  2419. said

  2420. no I

  2421. haven't

  2422. and she

  2423. said

  2424. well then

  2425. I would

  2426. encourage

  2427. you

  2428. to never

  2429. speak

  2430. on it

  2431. again

  2432. until you

  2433. have

  2434. this is

  2435. the preacher

  2436. the guest

  2437. preacher

  2438. and he

  2439. was moved

  2440. to do so

  2441. he did

  2442. and he

  2443. read the

  2444. entire

  2445. new

  2446. testament

  2447. and praise

  2448. god

  2449. he was a

  2450. baptist

  2451. at the

  2452. end of

  2453. that

  2454. process

  2455. as was

  2456. A.T.

  2457. Pearson

  2458. listen to

  2459. what he

  2460. says

  2461. what radical

  2462. reforms

  2463. would be

  2464. made in

  2465. modern

  2466. worship

  2467. teaching

  2468. and practice

  2469. in the

  2470. whole

  2471. conduct

  2472. of

  2473. disciples

  2474. and the

  2475. administration

  2476. of the

  2477. church

  2478. of God

  2479. if the

  2480. one final

  2481. criterion

  2482. of all

  2483. judgment

  2484. were

  2485. what

  2486. do the

  2487. scriptures

  2488. teach

  2489. and what

  2490. revolutions

  2491. in our

  2492. own lives

  2493. as believers

  2494. might take

  2495. place

  2496. if we

  2497. should

  2498. first put

  2499. every

  2500. notion

  2501. of truth

  2502. and custom

  2503. of life

  2504. to this

  2505. one test

  2506. of scripture

  2507. authority

  2508. and then

  2509. with the

  2510. courage

  2511. of conviction

  2512. dare to do

  2513. according

  2514. to that word

  2515. counting

  2516. no cost

  2517. but studying

  2518. to show

  2519. ourselves

  2520. approved

  2521. of God

  2522. is it

  2523. possible

  2524. that there

  2525. are any

  2526. modern

  2527. disciples

  2528. who reject

  2529. the commandment

  2530. of God

  2531. that they

  2532. may keep

  2533. their own

  2534. tradition

  2535. and he's

  2536. asking that

  2537. rhetorically

  2538. is it

  2539. possible

  2540. yes

  2541. it is

  2542. that there

  2543. are modern

  2544. disciples

  2545. disciples in

  2546. our day

  2547. who reject

  2548. the commandment

  2549. of God

  2550. that they

  2551. may keep

  2552. their own

  2553. tradition

  2554. beloved we

  2555. must filter

  2556. everything we

  2557. do

  2558. through the

  2559. powerful

  2560. word

  2561. of God

  2562. and it

  2563. is there

  2564. God wrote

  2565. a book

  2566. for us

  2567. we should

  2568. submit

  2569. ourselves

  2570. to it

  2571. in every

  2572. way

  2573. so as we

  2574. look at the

  2575. lives of

  2576. these men

  2577. that Jesus

  2578. makes these

  2579. great accusations

  2580. to let us

  2581. also be sure

  2582. that we will

  2583. not be

  2584. accused one

  2585. day of

  2586. these same

  2587. things

  2588. be sure

  2589. you're not

  2590. apostate

  2591. correct the

  2592. one who

  2593. is and

  2594. do not

  2595. miss this

  2596. lesson for

  2597. those of

  2598. us who

  2599. are in

  2600. the faith

  2601. let's pray

  2602. together
