  1. Amen. Please take out your copy of God's Word and turn to the Gospel according to Mark chapter 7.

    Mark 7 chapter mention

  2. The Gospel of Mark chapter 7. Our text for today will be verse 14 through verse 43.

    Mark 7 chapter mention

  3. ! But before we get to reading that, let me just remind you that this is the summation of Jesus' Galilean ministry.

  4. He's no longer going to journey about the region of Galilee, preaching any longer.

  5. He's about to, you'll notice in verse 24, go off to the region of Tyre and Sidon, which is on the coast of the Mediterranean,

  6. never to return and preach in Galilee again.

  7. And I think, fittingly, he closes up his time with a very important message,

  8. and that is a message of proper worship of God.

  9. And we addressed last week, if you'll notice in chapter 7, verse 7,

  10. he says of the scribes and the Pharisees and all of Israel,

  11. in vain do they worship me.

  12. This is a prophecy from Isaiah 29, 13, and certainly it was being fulfilled in this day.

  13. In vain do they worship me because they were hypocritical,

  14. because they had their hearts distant from God,

  15. and because they placed the tradition of men above the commandment of God.

  16. This vain worship was such a concern in Jesus' time, just as it is in our time,

  17. that Jesus then addresses the larger crowd in our text together.

  18. So let's read together.

  19. Mark chapter 7, beginning in verse 14.

    Mark 7 chapter mention

  20. And he called the people to him again and said to them,

  21. Hear me, all of you, and understand.

  22. There is nothing outside a person that by going into him can defile him,

  23. but the things that come out of a person are what defile him.

  24. And when he had entered the house and left the people,

  25. his disciples asked him about the parable.

  26. And he said to them,

  27. Then are you also without understanding?

  28. Do you not see that whatever goes into a person from outside cannot defile him,

  29. since it enters not his heart, but his stomach, and is expelled?

  30. Thus he declared all foods clean.

  31. And he said,

  32. What comes out of a person is what defiles him.

  33. For from within, out of the heart of man,

  34. come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, coveting, wickedness,

  35. deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride, foolishness.

  36. All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person.

  37. This is God's word to us.

  38. It's written for his glory and our good.

  39. We would all do well to listen to it in order to believe its promises and obey its commands.

  40. Let's pray together.

  41. Father God, it is certainly true that we need you in every hour of every day.

  42. Lord, that we ask that you would come close to us now,

  43. because we certainly need you in the hearing and understanding,

  44. the application of your word to us.

  45. We thank you for it,

  46. that you passed it down through all the ages,

  47. that we might open it and read it in our language,

  48. and commune with you in the study of it.

  49. Father, have your way with us this morning.

  50. Accomplish exactly what you intend to accomplish with us.

  51. Tear down barriers to your goodness in us.

  52. And we pray this in Christ's name.

  53. Amen.

  54. Amen.

  55. So, we observe here that Jesus continues this discourse on defilement.

  56. This was kind of the issue that was surrounding Jesus' accusation of the scribes and the Pharisees

  57. at the beginning of chapter 7,

  58. that some of the disciples weren't washing their hands.

  59. They weren't going through this extra-biblical ceremony

  60. that the people of that day thought defiled them,

  61. thought set them apart from God.

  62. The truth of it is that it didn't at all,

  63. but they thought that it did.

  64. And Jesus uses this example of Corban,

  65. things that were committed to God,

  66. was a tradition in the day.

  67. And the way that was put on top of the command of God,

  68. which was to honor your father and your mother.

  69. And so,

  70. so he broadens this.

  71. He continues this discourse on defilement with the larger crowd.

  72. We see this in verse 14,

  73. and he called the people to him again and said to them,

  74. hear me, all of you, and understand.

  75. Right?

  76. Such an important issue of the day that he draws everybody back together

  77. as he's had this side encounter with the scribes and the Pharisees.

  78. He then pulls everyone together

  79. and speaks this very simple and short parable to them that we find in verse 15.

  80. There's nothing outside a person that by going into him can defile him,

  81. but the things that come out of a person are what defile him.

  82. And then he goes on to give further explanation of this comment to the disciples.

  83. Note verse 17,

  84. and when he had entered the house and left the people,

  85. his disciples asked him about the parable.

  86. And we now get this further explanation of that

  87. with the parenthetical statement on the part of Mark.

  88. Thus he declared all foods clean,

  89. that there were no longer things that people ate that set them apart from God,

  90. but now people could eat anything and it wasn't necessary for them to divide up what they could and couldn't eat.

  91. And for us to kind of wrap our minds around this,

  92. I think we need to first understand what was meant by defilement.

  93. What does it mean to be defiled?

  94. And this word in the Greek means to be dirty,

  95. to be unclean,

  96. to be impure,

  97. to be corrupt.

  98. It is a word used often in the New Testament

  99. and its Hebrew counterpart is used over 200 times in the Old Testament.

  100. But it wasn't merely an exterior purification that was necessary.

  101. In fact, the Levitical law was meant to teach us of our need of a deeper purification.

  102. The external purification was meant to show us of our need of a deeper purification,

  103. the purification of our hearts,

  104. because we cannot enter into the presence of God unless we have first been made clean.

  105. It was designed to point to a cleansing that would come through faith in Christ.

  106. We now, on this side of the Testaments, get to see that and understand that.

  107. The writer of Hebrews wrote in chapter 10, verse 19 through 22,

  108. Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus,

  109. by the new and living way that He opened for us through the curtain,

  110. that is, through His flesh,

  111. and since we have a great priest over the house of God,

  112. let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith.

  113. Let us draw into the presence of God with true hearts and full assurance of faith,

  114. with our hearts sprinkled clean from evil conscience,

  115. and our bodies washed with pure water.

  116. It is this internal cleanliness that we need.

  117. It's a changing of who we are that is necessary in order to be in relation with the Lord God.

  118. But the scribes, the Pharisees, and the Jewish culture at large

  119. had added literally hundreds, hundreds of extra laws to the Levitical law.

  120. And in that process, right?

  121. And I think in the well-motivated process of trying to stack on laws upon laws upon laws upon laws,

  122. they had lost the point altogether of what the Levitical law was meant to accomplish,

  123. which was to point us to Christ.

  124. You see, they believed that purity was an exterior issue and not an issue of the heart.

  125. And Jesus rebukes the Pharisees for this.

  126. He does it time and time again.

  127. Let me give you one example.

  128. Matthew chapter 23, verse 27 and 28.

    Matthew 23:27

  129. Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!

  130. For you are like whitewashed tombs which outwardly appear beautiful,

  131. but within are full of dead people's bones and all uncleanliness.

  132. So you also outwardly appear righteous to others,

  133. but within you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.

  134. Right?

  135. They had the appearance of righteousness.

  136. As far as anyone could observe, they lived rightly,

  137. but they were dead inside.

  138. They did not have changed hearts that worshipped God.

  139. This is a serious issue in our day as well.

  140. And I would venture to say that even amongst us,

  141. there are people who come and sit in our audience

  142. thinking that it somehow gains them merit with God.

  143. Insert joke about finals here, which Wes already took from me.

  144. Right?

  145. You would be better off studying this morning

  146. if you think that coming to church gains you favor with God

  147. so that you might do well on your finals.

  148. This is not the case.

  149. Right?

  150. The things that we do are an outflow.

  151. They're a response to what God has done already in our hearts.

  152. We do things because of who we are.

  153. And this is heart worship.

  154. This is what it means to worship God from the heart.

  155. And God requires of us heart worship.

  156. Deuteronomy 6.5.

  157. Do you guys all know it now?

  158. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart,

  159. with all your soul, and with all your might.

  160. With all of our being we are meant to worship God.

  161. And how is this possible if we are born into sin,

  162. if we are utterly destroyed by sin,

  163. our image-bearing possibility has been torn down

  164. because of the effects of sin.

  165. We cannot bear the image of God apart from Christ because of sin.

  166. We are enemies of God apart from Christ.

  167. Do you remember the rare scribe, Mark chapter 12, 28 and 34?

    Mark 12 chapter mention

  168. We spoke of him last week.

  169. And one of the scribes came up and heard them disputing with one another.

  170. And seeing that he answered them well,

  171. Jesus being answered them well,

  172. asked him,

  173. Which commandment is the most important of all?

  174. Jesus answered,

  175. The most important is,

  176. Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one.

  177. And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart,

  178. and with all your soul,

  179. and with all your mind,

  180. and with all your strength.

  181. Jesus expands for us what that looks like, our being.

  182. Verse 31,

  183. The second is this,

  184. You shall love your neighbor as yourself.

  185. There is no other commandment greater than these.

  186. And the scribe said to him,

  187. You are right, teacher.

  188. You have truly said that he is one,

  189. and there is no other besides him.

  190. And to love with all the heart,

  191. with all the understanding,

  192. with all the strength,

  193. and to love one's neighbor as oneself

  194. is much more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.

  195. It is outward worship.

  196. Right?

  197. Much more than all of those things.

  198. And when Jesus saw that he answered wisely,

  199. he said to him,

  200. You are not far from the kingdom of God.

  201. You see, the scribe understood it in his mind.

  202. He got the commandment of God in his mind,

  203. but it had yet to work into him and change his heart.

  204. He possessed the right knowledge,

  205. but he didn't possess heart change.

  206. I hope that this scribe was part of the kingdom soon after.

  207. Jesus teaches us that those who are part of the kingdom of God

  208. do not vary in degree,

  209. but in type.

  210. There's two types.

  211. There's not somewhere in between.

  212. I'm more holy than you are holy.

  213. That we're gaining our holy points,

  214. but we vary in types.

  215. You are a child of God,

  216. or you are an enemy of God.

  217. Those are the only two categories.

  218. Put different names on them if you wish.

  219. Those are the only two categories that you can live in.

  220. You are a child of God,

  221. or you are an enemy of God.

  222. There is no in between.

  223. This is something that I'm trying to teach my boys at a very early age.

  224. And Sam and I decided early on

  225. that we were going to use language

  226. when we punished them,

  227. and we're reconciling with them after the fact,

  228. after they were spanked and sobbed on the bed for a while,

  229. and we go into them to bring correction.

  230. And I'm confident that they don't understand a word I'm saying

  231. at this point in their lives.

  232. But I hope they do when I say to Cade,

  233. when I say,

  234. Cade, you are my son,

  235. and I love you.

  236. And that is why I want you to obey.

  237. If we are children of God,

  238. our response to God's love for us

  239. should be obedience to Him.

  240. Because we know He loves us.

  241. Because of our status.

  242. He is our Father.

  243. And I hope for my kids,

  244. I hope that they can get that with me,

  245. that there's nothing that they can do

  246. that will remove them from that.

  247. They will never stop being my sons,

  248. that I love them with an unconditional love,

  249. that I'm always seeking their good,

  250. not perfectly,

  251. because I'm fallen as well,

  252. but I'm always looking to their best interest,

  253. to the best of my ability,

  254. and as such,

  255. they should want to be obeyed.

  256. It should be the natural response

  257. of their status.

  258. I am a son of Nathan Rayner.

  259. Therefore, I obey,

  260. and I do what Nathan Rayner asks me to do.

  261. This is the way we function as believers,

  262. those who have regenerate hearts.

  263. We get some great metaphorical pictures of this.

  264. Luke chapter 6,

    Luke 6:43

  265. verse 43 and 45.

  266. Jesus says,

  267. For no good tree bears bad fruit,

  268. nor again does a bad tree bear good fruit.

  269. For each tree is known by its own fruit.

  270. So see the category here is

  271. bad tree and good tree.

  272. For figs are not gathered from thorn bushes,

  273. nor are grapes picked from a bramble bush.

  274. The good person out of the good treasure of his heart

  275. produces good.

  276. And the evil person out of his evil treasure

  277. produces evil.

  278. For out of the abundance of the heart

  279. his mouth speaks.

  280. So you see,

  281. what we do is a result of who we are.

  282. What you do does not change who you are,

  283. but who you are changes what you do.

  284. Jesus used another plant metaphor

  285. in the parallel passage to today's

  286. in Matthew chapter 15,

    Matthew 15:10–14

  287. verses 10 through 14.

  288. And he says,

  289. And he called the people to him,

  290. and he said to him,

  291. Hear and understand.

  292. It is not what goes into the mouth

  293. that defiles a person,

  294. but what comes out of the mouth.

  295. This defiles a person.

  296. Then the disciples came and said to him,

  297. Do you know that the Pharisees were offended

  298. when they heard this saying?

  299. Of course they were.

  300. Of course they were offended

  301. because they thought all of their careful preparation

  302. and all their very, very careful observance

  303. of these extra laws that had been created

  304. is what made them righteous.

  305. It's what set them apart.

  306. It's what kept them from being defiled.

  307. Of course it was an offense to them.

  308. Verse 13,

  309. He answered,

  310. Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted

  311. will be rooted up.

  312. Let them alone.

  313. There are blind guides.

  314. And if the blind lead the blind,

  315. both will fall into a pit.

  316. Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted

  317. will be rooted up.

  318. Rooted up plants are destroyed.

  319. Listen to what Jeremiah says of our hearts

  320. before they are changed by the grace of our Lord.

  321. Jeremiah 17, 9,

  322. And the heart is deceitful above all things

  323. and desperately sick.

  324. Who can understand it?

  325. Jesus said in Mark 2, verse 17,

    Mark 2:17

  326. Those who are well have no need of a physician.

  327. Those who see themselves as well.

  328. None of us are well.

  329. But those who see themselves as well

  330. have no need of a physician.

  331. But those who are sick,

  332. those who are humble,

  333. those who recognize their broken state,

  334. know that they need fixing.

  335. And then he says,

  336. I came not to call the righteous,

  337. but sinners.

  338. Jesus Christ is about the work

  339. of fulfilling the prophecy of Ezekiel.

  340. Where God spoke saying in Ezekiel 36,

    Ezekiel 36:24–28

  341. verse 24-28,

  342. I will take you from the nations

  343. and gather you from all the countries

  344. and bring you into my own land.

  345. I will sprinkle clean water on you

  346. and you shall be clean

  347. from all your uncleanliness

  348. and from all your idols.

  349. I will cleanse you.

  350. And I will give you a new heart

  351. and a new spirit I will put within you.

  352. And I will remove the heart of stone

  353. from your flesh

  354. and give you a heart of flesh.

  355. And I will put my spirit within you

  356. and cause you to walk in my statutes

  357. and be careful to obey my rules.

  358. You shall dwell in the land

  359. that I gave to your fathers

  360. and you shall be my people

  361. and I will be your God.

  362. I will give to you a new heart.

  363. I will cause you to walk in my ways.

  364. You see that it is our identity

  365. that affects how it is that we live.

  366. Proverbs 4.23 says,

  367. Keep your heart with all vigilance

  368. for from it flow the springs of life.

  369. So good fruit comes from good trees.

  370. Righteousness comes from people

  371. with changed hearts.

  372. Righteousness is the response

  373. of a heart changed by God.

  374. Now the opposite is also true.

  375. Jesus states it here for us

  376. in the negative.

  377. I've been saying it in the positive.

  378. Jesus states it for us here

  379. in the negative.

  380. In verse 15 and then 18-23.

  381. It seems a bit tongue-in-cheek even

  382. that He says in verse 18,

  383. Do you not see what will go into a person

  384. from the house that cannot defile him?

  385. Since it doesn't enter into his heart

  386. but a stomach and it's expelled

  387. and the Greek here literally goes

  388. into the latrine.

  389. It passes through you.

  390. Right?

  391. It doesn't go into your heart.

  392. It just passes through you

  393. is what He's saying to us here.

  394. And then He gives us

  395. this list of things

  396. that come out of a person

  397. and those are the things

  398. that are the evidence

  399. of what kind of tree the person is.

  400. Right?

  401. It's an evidence of what their heart loves

  402. because they participate

  403. in these things.

  404. For from within,

  405. out of the heart of man,

  406. now just listen to these.

  407. I just want to read them to you slowly

  408. and just let these sink.

  409. Come, evil thoughts,

  410. sexual immorality,

  411. theft,

  412. murder,

  413. and remember Jesus says

  414. if you hate your brother,

  415. you've committed murder in your heart.

  416. Adultery,

  417. if you look on a woman with lust,

  418. you've committed adultery in your heart.

  419. Coveting,

  420. wickedness,

  421. deceit,

  422. sensuality,

  423. envy,

  424. slander,

  425. pride,

  426. and foolishness.

  427. Beloved,

  428. we are all guilty

  429. of all of these things.

  430. And proper,

  431. humble hearts,

  432. regenerate hearts,

  433. those who understand the gospel

  434. get this.

  435. I am guilty of these things.

  436. Praise God

  437. my righteousness comes from Christ.

  438. Praise God

  439. that He is working in me

  440. to make me new.

  441. I have a new heart

  442. and that overflows

  443. into righteous living.

  444. I don't do it perfectly,

  445. but that is the trajectory

  446. of my life.

  447. I'm headed away from sin

  448. and towards holiness.

  449. If you look at the graph

  450. of my life,

  451. it should be trending

  452. toward holiness.

  453. If you zoom in on any one moment,

  454. I can't guarantee

  455. that it would be.

  456. But if you look at it

  457. in a whole,

  458. I should be moving

  459. towards holiness,

  460. towards Christ-likeness.

  461. As with people

  462. who don't have changed hearts,

  463. we shouldn't be surprised

  464. when they sin.

  465. It shouldn't be a shock to us

  466. that they have forsaken

  467. the ways of God

  468. to follow their own passions

  469. and their own desires.

  470. It shouldn't shock us a bit

  471. when our co-workers,

  472. our classmates,

  473. our neighbors,

  474. our friends,

  475. our family members sin.

  476. It shouldn't shock us

  477. if they're not found

  478. in Christ.

  479. Because the unregenerate heart

  480. is a sin factory.

  481. That is what it's bent on doing.

  482. It's bent on generating sin,

  483. on doing things

  484. that say to God,

  485. I hate you.

  486. I don't want to submit myself

  487. to your ways.

  488. I want to live in my way.

  489. My way is better than your way.

  490. I want to be like a God.

  491. This is what the unregenerate heart does.

  492. And if this is the trajectory

  493. of your life,

  494. if it doesn't lead away

  495. from these things

  496. listed here in verse 22 and 23,

  497. right,

  498. our evil thoughts,

  499. sexual immorality,

  500. theft, murder, adultery,

  501. coveting, wickedness,

  502. deceit, sensuality,

  503. envy, slander, pride, foolishness,

  504. right,

  505. then you are defiled.

  506. That's your stance.

  507. It's where you exist.

  508. That is your unclean.

  509. You're not set apart

  510. for the worship of God.

  511. You can't be in relationship

  512. with Him

  513. because you are dirty.

  514. If your life

  515. is generally characterized

  516. by any of the things

  517. our Lord has listed here,

  518. then this is the evidence

  519. that you are a bad tree.

  520. You are a bad tree.

  521. If you're a bad tree

  522. which produces evil,

  523. then you're not one

  524. of God's trees.

  525. You're not a child of God,

  526. but rather an enemy of God.

  527. And how damning it is

  528. to be an enemy of God.

  529. What a frightful end you have

  530. if you are an enemy of God.

  531. God is love.

  532. He has extended to us grace

  533. in Jesus Christ.

  534. We can have our image-bearing possibility

  535. restored in Jesus.

  536. God has done so much

  537. to lavish love on this world.

  538. In fact,

  539. He does it in every way

  540. in every day.

  541. His sustaining grace,

  542. the fact that any of us

  543. woke up this morning,

  544. whether we're a child of God

  545. or an enemy of God

  546. and breathed air

  547. and were automatically

  548. thrown into a pit of hell,

  549. is His extension

  550. of His love and grace.

  551. I hate when the wrath of God

  552. is preached that people say,

  553. well, but God is love.

  554. Of course He's love.

  555. He's done so many things

  556. to show His great love for us.

  557. Stop for a moment

  558. and count for blessings.

  559. Even if you think there are few,

  560. there are so many.

  561. They abound to us

  562. in every way.

  563. But God must punish sin.

  564. For those of us found in Christ,

  565. He punished it in Christ.

  566. He didn't just dismiss it.

  567. It must be punished.

  568. He punished it in Christ

  569. on our behalf.

  570. If you're not found in Christ

  571. at the end of all things,

  572. you will bear the wrath of God

  573. for your sin.

  574. This is a scary thing.

  575. I would plead with you

  576. to avoid this judgment.

  577. In a broadening metaphor,

  578. Jesus says that anyone

  579. that persists in doing evil

  580. does not abide in Him.

  581. John 15, 6.

  582. If anyone does not abide in Me,

  583. he is thrown away

  584. like a branch and withers.

  585. And the branches are gathered,

  586. thrown into the fire,

  587. and burned.

  588. If this is your final resting state,

  589. you will know in that day,

  590. you'll fully comprehend and get

  591. that the only thing

  592. that put you there

  593. was your unbelief.

  594. This will be the damning thing for you,

  595. will be your unbelief.

  596. You will not blame God for it

  597. in that day.

  598. You will not stand in judgment over Him.

  599. You will see Him as a right,

  600. a just judge,

  601. properly punishing your sin.

  602. Repent and believe.

  603. Please repent and believe.

  604. This is an eternal matter

  605. that we have before us.

  606. That we might have life

  607. and life everlasting.

  608. And not judgment everlasting.

  609. It's a serious, serious issue.

  610. And this is why sin is so serious.

  611. It's persistent sin

  612. that leads to death.

  613. Persistent sin leads to death.

  614. And now hear what I'm saying here,

  615. that if your life has this trajectory of sin,

  616. that's an issue,

  617. that's an evidence

  618. of where your heart is

  619. which leads to death.

  620. Right?

  621. If your trajectory is different than this,

  622. if you are hating sin

  623. by the grace of God

  624. and turning to Him,

  625. then this is not the trajectory of your life.

  626. Then your heart is,

  627. in fact,

  628. regenerate.

  629. But persistent sin leads to death.

  630. And Jesus has stark words to say about it.

  631. Mark chapter 9,

    Mark 9:43–48

  632. verse 43 through 48.

  633. And if your hand causes you to sin,

  634. cut it off.

  635. It is better for you to enter life

  636. crippled than with two hands

  637. to go to hell

  638. to the unquenchable fire.

  639. And if your foot causes you to sin,

  640. cut it off.

  641. It is better for you to enter life

  642. lame than with two feet

  643. to be thrown into hell.

  644. And if your eye causes you to sin,

  645. tear it out.

  646. It is better for you

  647. to enter the kingdom of God

  648. with one eye

  649. than with two eyes

  650. to be thrown into hell

  651. where their worm does not die

  652. and the fire is not quenched.

  653. Cutting off your hand

  654. and tearing out your eye

  655. does not solve the issue of sin.

  656. Jesus is not suggesting to us

  657. that we mutilate our bodies.

  658. But what He is suggesting to us

  659. is that we put to death

  660. sin in our life

  661. by the power of Jesus Christ.

  662. This is what He's teaching us here.

  663. Brian Hedges in his book

  664. License to Kill says,

  665. we will not exert

  666. holy violence against our sins

  667. until we're convinced

  668. that they really are dangerous.

  669. We're all so comfortable.

  670. We're all so lulled to sleep

  671. by how easy life really is.

  672. Sin is serious.

  673. And there are serious consequences for it.

  674. Please hear that

  675. from the Word of God today.

  676. There's encouragement

  677. to those of us

  678. who find ourselves in Christ

  679. for the serious nature of sin.

  680. Paul says in Philippians 2,

    Philippians 2:12

  681. verse 12 and 13,

  682. Therefore, my beloved,

  683. he's recognizing they are Christians,

  684. as you have always obeyed,

  685. so now,

  686. not only as my presence,

  687. but much more as my aspens.

  688. Work out your own salvation

  689. with fear and trembling.

  690. Give evidence to the fact

  691. that you are regenerate

  692. by the things that you do.

  693. Be about the work of God,

  694. proving time and time again

  695. that He has given grace to your heart.

  696. For it is God who works in you,

  697. both to will and to work

  698. for His good pleasure.

  699. If sin is not being put to death

  700. in your life,

  701. then you are not God's.

  702. Then you are not God's.

  703. But you can be.

  704. So don't hear me just speaking

  705. condemnation down on you.

  706. If you're not found in the faith,

  707. if you're not a child of God,

  708. I need to tell you I love you.

  709. Don't go to hell.

  710. You have to leap over my body

  711. to get there,

  712. as Spurgeon said.

  713. Repent and believe.

  714. Believe in the Gospel.

  715. Believe that Christ

  716. bore your wrath on the cross.

  717. Ask that He would change your heart.

  718. That He would make you new

  719. day by day

  720. into His image.

  721. Believe that Jesus is

  722. who He said He is.

  723. He is the Christ,

  724. the Anointed One,

  725. the Son of God,

  726. who came and took away

  727. the sins of the world.

  728. Examine yourselves.

  729. 2 Corinthians 13.5

  730. Paul says,

  731. Examine yourselves

  732. to see whether you are in the faith.

  733. Test yourselves,

  734. or do you not realize

  735. this about yourselves,

  736. that Jesus Christ is in you,

  737. unless indeed

  738. you fail to meet the test.

  739. Examine yourselves.

  740. Ask God to search you,

  741. to try you,

  742. and to lead you.

  743. Psalm 139, 23, and 24

  744. says,

  745. Search me, O God,

  746. and know my heart.

  747. Try me and know my thoughts,

  748. and see if there be

  749. any grievous way in me,

  750. and lead me in the way everlasting.

  751. Ask that God would expose to you

  752. those things that you can't see yourself.

  753. Ask that God would get inside of you

  754. and shed light into dark places,

  755. to see if there's anything

  756. grievous in you

  757. that you might repent and believe.

  758. We want to find ourselves

  759. in the state that John encourages

  760. in 1 John 2, 28-29.

  761. And now, little children,

  762. abide in Him,

  763. so that when He appears

  764. we may have confidence

  765. and not shrink from Him

  766. in shame at His coming.

  767. If you know that He is righteous,

  768. you may be sure

  769. that everyone who practices righteousness

  770. has been born of Him.

  771. Beloved, we have great charge

  772. placed out before us.

  773. A great deal of conformity

  774. to bring ourselves in with.

  775. There is so much teaching

  776. in the Scriptures

  777. about the things that we ought not do,

  778. and the things that we should be doing.

  779. But so many of us miss the point

  780. that when we're not doing the things

  781. we see the Scriptures teaching,

  782. we've got to behavior change

  783. or modification.

  784. We've just got to get in there.

  785. We've got to work a little bit.

  786. We've got to do a little better.

  787. We've got to do a little more.

  788. When what needs to happen

  789. is our hearts need to change.

  790. Even those of us

  791. who have regenerate hearts,

  792. our hearts can grow cold sometimes

  793. to the truth of the Gospel.

  794. We can forget the realities of it.

  795. We can stop believing it at times.

  796. Stop understanding what it is

  797. that God has done for us

  798. in Christ.

  799. Recognize that all sin

  800. is an issue of the heart.

  801. Who we are at our very core.

  802. In our essence.

  803. And the response

  804. wherever you find yourself today,

  805. wherever you find yourself,

  806. is to repent of that sin

  807. and to believe.

  808. Turn from sin

  809. and turn to God.

  810. This is the call for those of you

  811. who don't know

  812. if you're found in Christ.

  813. You don't know

  814. where your eternal end is.

  815. You may find

  816. that you're feeling

  817. some conviction

  818. that it may be destruction.

  819. That you have been living life

  820. your way

  821. and that your heart

  822. has not changed.

  823. The answer to you

  824. is repent and believe.

  825. Turn from your sin

  826. and turn to God.

  827. And for those of us

  828. who find ourselves

  829. in the faith,

  830. as you mature in your faith,

  831. you will realize

  832. that our lives

  833. are this constant cycle

  834. of repentance and belief.

  835. Messing up

  836. and being made right.

  837. And messing up

  838. and being made right.

  839. But at least we know

  840. when we fall,

  841. we fall in the right direction.

  842. We know that our trajectory

  843. is set heaven bound.

  844. That we are being made

  845. into the image of Christ.

  846. It is a heart issue.

  847. It's not what goes into us

  848. that defiles us.

  849. It's what comes out of us

  850. that defiles us.

  851. Let's pray together.

  852. Thank you.

  853. Thank you.
