  1. Please take out your copy of God's Word. Turn to the Gospel according to Mark chapter 7.

    Mark 7 chapter mention

  2. ! Often during an offering there's a choir special at a larger church.

  3. ! And I'm a fan of the choir special.

  4. I think it's enjoyable to hear large groups of people singing God's praises.

  5. But I will take that over a choir special any day.

  6. So thank you, Wes and Liz. I appreciate that.

  7. Mark chapter 7, as we continue to work through our preaching of the Gospel of Mark.

    Mark 7 chapter mention

  8. Every week when one Sunday sermon closes down, I turn my attention to the next week and begin to prayerfully consider where we should go next.

  9. And as we believe in verse-by-verse exposition as a general habit, of course my mind immediately goes to what's happening next in our text.

  10. And how far should we go?

  11. And I'm very apt every week to take some time to stop and ask the Lord if this is what He would have us do.

  12. I think it's also okay to take a break from our verse-by-verse exposition and do that.

  13. And I've got to tell you that this week I had the hardest time finding bearing on this morning's text.

  14. And figuring out what it is exactly that God wanted to communicate to us from it.

  15. And so I asked a couple of times, Lord, are you sure this is the text?

  16. Mother's Day, should I preach a sermon about women and being mothers?

  17. And was convinced that this was the text for us this day.

  18. So I hope that you'll enjoy it as we join together.

  19. At least there's a mother in it as we preach through it today.

  20. Let me remind you though, before we read, we're going to look together at verses 24-37 in chapter 7.

  21. But before we get there, remember that Jesus has just had this encounter with the scribes and the Pharisees.

  22. The Pharisees, kind of the legalistic Jews of this day, they were apostate in every way.

  23. They had really walked away from God and God's ways and His commandments, although they thought they were following Him to the letter.

  24. But we see here as He confronts them, He quotes from them this prophecy from Isaiah.

  25. And He says, in vain do they worship Me.

  26. Speaking of both the Pharisees and the scribes, as well as all of Israel, as He says to us here.

  27. They worshipped Him in vain as hypocrites with their hearts far removed from Him.

  28. Placing above the commandment of God the traditions of men.

  29. Giving evidence of their defilement or their uncleanliness, their unholiness.

  30. By participating in the activities that we saw listed in verses 21 and 22.

  31. And so we see that it is possible to worship the right God, but to worship Him wrongly.

  32. And this is a fearful thing.

  33. We ought to draw our minds and our hearts to worship Him properly.

  34. Because God desires of us heart worship.

  35. Deuteronomy 6.5

  36. God commands, you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.

  37. And hearts that are changed by God are hearts that worship God.

  38. And this is what God desires of us.

  39. And so as we look at this next text together, it would seem that Mark was inspired to record these events in this order

  40. to stress this very point, what Jesus was speaking about defilement.

  41. That it is a matter of the heart that matters mostly.

  42. So look in your text and your copy of God's Word as I read to you verses 24 through 37.

  43. And from there he arose and went away to the region of Tyre and Sidon.

  44. And he entered a house and did not want anyone to know, yet he could not be hidden.

  45. But immediately a woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit heard of him and came and fell down at his feet.

  46. Now the woman was a Gentile, a Syrophoenician by birth.

  47. And she begged him to cast the demon out of her daughter.

  48. And he said to her,

  49. Let the children be fed first, for it is not right to take the children's bread and throw it to dogs.

  50. But she answered him,

  51. Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs under the table eat the children's crumbs.

  52. And he said to her,

  53. For this statement you may go your way.

  54. The demon has left your daughter.

  55. And she went home and found the child lying in bed, and the demon gone.

  56. Then he returned from the region of Tyre and went through Sidon to the Sea of Galilee in the region of the Decapolis.

  57. And they brought to him a man who was deaf and had a speech impediment, and they begged him to lay his hand on him.

  58. And taking him aside from the crowd privately, he put his fingers into his ears,

  59. and after spitting, touched his tongue and looked up to heaven.

  60. He sighed and said to him,

  61. Ephphathah, that is, be opened.

  62. And his ears were opened, his tongue was released, and he spoke plainly.

  63. And Jesus charged them to tell no one.

  64. But the more he charged them, the more zealously they proclaimed it.

  65. And they were astonished beyond measure, saying,

  66. He has done all things well.

  67. He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.

  68. This is God's word to us, written for his glory and our good.

  69. We would all do well to listen to it in order to believe its promises and obey its commands.

  70. Let's pray together.

  71. Father God, we do thank you for your word to us.

  72. And Father, we recognize this morning that while this is an ancient book,

  73. written in ancient pen,

  74. that it was inspired by your spirit,

  75. that Mark was carried along by him as he recorded the life of Jesus for us.

  76. It has meaning and it has bearing on us this day.

  77. And we believe that you brought us here together with purpose and meaning.

  78. And so I pray, Father, we are all making ourselves available to what you would say to us by your word.

  79. This is accomplished by the power of your spirit,

  80. so we ask for a great deal of blessing in the preaching of your word

  81. and the hearing of it as well,

  82. to the great end of your glory.

  83. And we pray this in Christ's name.

  84. Amen.

  85. So we see here that Jesus has concluded his time in Galilee.

  86. His Galilean ministry has wound down.

  87. And he leaves the region altogether and departs to go to the region of Tyre and Sidon.

  88. Now, if you're not familiar with the geography of this day,

  89. these two cities were located on the coast of the Mediterranean.

  90. And this was far outside of any Jewish dwelling.

  91. Now, to be clear, the Jews were interspersed in a number of places.

  92. So there's not an area that Jesus travels that there were no Jews.

  93. But by and large, this is now a Gentile region, right?

  94. Which is a generic term for people who are not of Jewish descent,

  95. which I would assume includes all of us in this room.

  96. Maybe not, but most of us in this room would be counted in that number.

  97. And this is the place that he travels to.

  98. And it appears that he travels there to rest.

  99. If you look at the second half of verse 24,

  100. he goes and he hides himself away in a house,

  101. but he is found out just the same.

  102. So it seems that he's withdrawing.

  103. And as is always the case, the crowds seem to follow him.

  104. His reputation precedes him.

  105. And there's a request that's made of him.

  106. After this encounter with a Syrophoenician woman,

  107. he makes a journey to the Decapolis, which he's been in before.

  108. But this time to get there, rather than crossing the Sea of Galilee,

  109. he goes through Sidon, which is on the northern area of this region that he's in,

  110. and makes, it seems, we don't know this for sure,

  111. but it seems that he makes a rather circuitous route

  112. to get to the Decapolis, going all the way around Galilee.

  113. So he is done with Galilee.

  114. He has laid out his ministry.

  115. He has preached the gospel there.

  116. He has healed countless numbers.

  117. And he's now going to go all the way around it

  118. to get to this region called the Decapolis.

  119. Now remember the last time he was there,

  120. he crossed over the Sea of Galilee,

  121. and he was encountered by a man as soon as he lands

  122. that was possessed by a legion of demons.

  123. And he casts him out into a bunch of pigs

  124. who run off and are drowned into the sea.

  125. And after this, the man wants to follow him.

  126. He asks that he can get back in the boat with him and go with him.

  127. But Jesus doesn't permit him to do that.

  128. And in chapter 5, verse 19, he says to the man,

  129. go home to your friends and tell them how much the Lord has done for you

  130. and how he has had mercy on you.

  131. And then Mark accounts that this man went away

  132. and began to proclaim in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him.

  133. And everyone marveled.

  134. So it would seem that the man traveled far and wide in this region

  135. that was east of the Sea of Galilee

  136. and shared what Jesus had done for him.

  137. And he was apparently successful in telling his friends what the Lord had done

  138. because now we see this crowd gathered.

  139. You see the mention of that in verse 33 that's gathered to him.

  140. And then we note at the summation of all of this,

  141. in verse 36, that Jesus charged them,

  142. those who were his friends,

  143. those who witnessed the healing of this man who was deaf

  144. and had some form of blockage in his speech,

  145. to not tell anyone.

  146. But the more he charged them,

  147. the more zealously they proclaimed it.

  148. So he had entered into a region where he had no fame.

  149. He cast out a legion of demons out of a man

  150. and now he's suddenly famous.

  151. And he's in a region now where this fame is growing

  152. and it's growing.

  153. And as seemed to always be the case,

  154. as Jesus is led along by the Father,

  155. he's trying to keep his popularity down a bit,

  156. I believe to waylay his crucifixion,

  157. that he might complete his time on earth

  158. before it is that he's crucified.

  159. So here's kind of the background

  160. of where we see him moving as these events take place.

  161. And I'd like for us to notice two things,

  162. two primary things from our text this morning.

  163. Number one, Jesus' compassion to non-Jewish peoples.

  164. Number one, Jesus' compassion to non-Jewish peoples.

  165. Praise God were the recipients of that.

  166. And number two, the faith of the Syrophoenician woman

  167. and the man who was deaf and had a speech impediment.

  168. So these are kind of the larger things

  169. that we want to notice together today

  170. as we talk through these stories together.

  171. So when he goes to this region of Tyre and Sidon,

  172. he's encountered by a woman and she's called here a Gentile,

  173. verse 26, now the one was a Gentile,

  174. a Syrophoenician by birth.

  175. Another way to say that would have been a Syrian Phoenician,

  176. which speaks to her ethnicity being Syrian,

  177. as well as the region in which she lived.

  178. A larger area of the region of Tyre and Sidon

  179. would have been known as Phoenicia.

  180. And that is to say she was not of Jewish descent.

  181. She was of a different ethnicity, a Syrian ethnicity.

  182. These were people that were enemies of the Jewish people.

  183. These were people that had carried them off

  184. hundreds of years earlier into captivity

  185. and they had later been released.

  186. Much calamity had come upon the people of Israel

  187. as a result of a Syrian attacks.

  188. So she was of that descent.

  189. That was her ethnicity.

  190. And she didn't live in what was considered the Holy Land.

  191. She lived outside of that realm in the region of Phoenicia.

  192. And that's why this is being established for us.

  193. Because the Jews thought that the blessings of God

  194. just came to them because they were of a blood descent from Abraham.

  195. That the promises to Abraham, the Abrahamic covenant,

  196. was just theirs because of their bloodline.

  197. And this was some of the arrogance that the Pharisees, the scribes,

  198. and the people at large possessed in their worship of God.

  199. So remember that.

  200. We're coming just off the heels of this confrontation

  201. and we're going to see many more as we progress through the Gospel of Mark.

  202. But they were basing their merit before God

  203. on something that was exterior

  204. and that is their blood lineage,

  205. which I get doesn't feel exterior.

  206. But just the same.

  207. It was a thing that was tangible,

  208. not an issue of their heart.

  209. So Mark establishes that for us, right?

  210. Both by ethnicity and region,

  211. that she was not Jewish.

  212. In addition to that,

  213. she was a woman

  214. who would have been very much more lowly thought of

  215. in this very patriarchal society.

  216. And she had not a son that had a demon possession,

  217. but she had a daughter with an unclean spirit.

  218. So as far as the Jews were concerned,

  219. the odds would have been really stacked up against

  220. there being any blessing of any kind given to this woman.

  221. Jesus had no reason in their thinking

  222. to show her any compassion whatsoever.

  223. And we see that she comes to Jesus

  224. and she begs him to cast the demon out of her daughter.

  225. She knew,

  226. probably because she had heard of the work that he had done,

  227. she had probably heard of the many exorcisms he had already done,

  228. that he had the power to do this very thing.

  229. But it's interesting that she thought

  230. that that was something that he would do for her,

  231. a woman with a daughter

  232. who was not found to be part of Israel.

  233. And so I wonder why,

  234. and we don't know for sure,

  235. but maybe,

  236. maybe she knew the Old Testament Scriptures.

  237. Maybe they had been taught to her at some point.

  238. A scripture like Isaiah 5, 26,

  239. which says,

  240. He, being God,

  241. will raise a signal for nations far away

  242. and whistle for them from the ends of the earth

  243. and behold,

  244. quickly,

  245. speedily,

  246. they come.

  247. Maybe she was like the Sumerian woman

  248. that Jesus met at the well

  249. found in John chapter 4.

    John 4 chapter mention

  250. The woman says to him,

  251. Jesus,

  252. Sir,

  253. I perceive that you are a prophet.

  254. Our fathers worshipped on this mountain,

  255. but you say that in Jerusalem

  256. is the place where people ought to worship.

  257. Jesus said to her,

  258. Woman,

  259. believe me,

  260. the hour is coming when neither on this mountain

  261. nor in Jerusalem

  262. will you worship the Father.

  263. You worship what you do not know.

  264. We worship what we know,

  265. for salvation

  266. is from the Jews.

  267. Remember,

  268. Sumerian people were

  269. an interbred people.

  270. They were a people that existed

  271. apart from the pure bloodline of Israel

  272. because these were people that

  273. were the result of intermarriages

  274. between Babylonians

  275. and the Israelites.

  276. Verse 23,

  277. But the hour is coming

  278. and is now here

  279. when the true worshippers

  280. will worship the Father

  281. in spirit and truth.

  282. For the Father is seeking such people

  283. to worship Him,

  284. worship Him from the heart.

  285. God is spirit

  286. and those who worship Him

  287. must worship in spirit and truth.

  288. The woman said to Him,

  289. so here's where we are,

  290. maybe this Syrophoenician woman

  291. was like the Samaritan in this way.

  292. The woman said to Him,

  293. I know that Messiah is coming,

  294. He who is called Christ.

  295. When He comes,

  296. He will tell us all things.

  297. Jesus said to her,

  298. I who speak to you am He.

  299. And so she knew,

  300. the Samaritan woman knew,

  301. that the blessings of God

  302. could come to her in Christ.

  303. Maybe the Syrophoenician woman

  304. thought so as well.

  305. Maybe she was familiar

  306. with Psalm 145,

  307. 8-13,

  308. which says,

  309. The Lord is gracious

  310. and merciful,

  311. slow to anger,

  312. and abounding

  313. in steadfast love.

  314. The Lord is good to all,

  315. and His mercy is over

  316. all that He has made.

  317. All your work

  318. shall give thanks to you,

  319. O Lord,

  320. and all your saints

  321. shall bless you.

  322. They shall speak of the glory

  323. of your kingdom

  324. and tell of your power

  325. to make known to the children

  326. of man your mighty deeds

  327. and the glorious splendor

  328. of your kingdom.

  329. Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom,

  330. and your dominion endures

  331. throughout all generations.

  332. Maybe she was aware

  333. of the mercy that God had shown

  334. the Ninevites

  335. by the message of Jonah.

  336. She saw that God has always

  337. been about the work

  338. of making Himself known

  339. among the nations.

  340. Israel used to be

  341. the vehicle

  342. by which that happened.

  343. This was the way

  344. that God displayed

  345. His majesty

  346. in a people.

  347. Now the church

  348. is that vehicle.

  349. Praise God.

  350. Which includes Gentiles.

  351. And this is why,

  352. as a church,

  353. we have a vision statement

  354. that includes

  355. peoples.

  356. We even use this language

  357. to draw our minds

  358. simply beyond the people

  359. that we encounter

  360. day to day,

  361. but peoples,

  362. meaning people groups,

  363. people of different ethnicities

  364. and backgrounds,

  365. nationalities.

  366. So Christ Family Church

  367. exists to glorify God

  368. by experiencing,

  369. proclaiming,

  370. and displaying

  371. the supremacy

  372. of Jesus Christ

  373. in all things

  374. to all peoples.

  375. Because God wants

  376. to be known

  377. amongst all peoples

  378. to the ends of the earth.

  379. He is a global God

  380. who deserves

  381. global glory.

  382. I would say to you

  383. this is likely

  384. what she knew

  385. to be true

  386. of Jesus

  387. because of the way

  388. she approaches Him.

  389. She probably knew

  390. that she wasn't excluded

  391. from the blessing

  392. of God in Christ

  393. because of her ethnicity

  394. or nationality.

  395. The only thing

  396. that can possibly

  397. exclude anyone

  398. from the blessings

  399. of God in Christ

  400. is their own unbelief.

  401. Let's get that straight

  402. in our minds.

  403. The only thing

  404. that can possibly

  405. exclude anyone

  406. from the blessings

  407. of God in Christ

  408. is their own unbelief.

  409. There's nothing

  410. that we have done.

  411. There's no part

  412. of who we are

  413. except for our unbelief

  414. that excludes us

  415. from the blessings

  416. of God in Christ.

  417. Now as a side lesson

  418. for mothers today,

  419. if your child

  420. has some spiritual malady

  421. and the problems

  422. that our children

  423. experience

  424. are only either

  425. physical

  426. or they are spiritual,

  427. they have some

  428. spiritual malady,

  429. Jesus is the one

  430. you should go to

  431. for the remedy.

  432. Our children need

  433. doctors and Christ.

  434. We don't need

  435. child psychologists.

  436. It's only valuable

  437. psychology

  438. if it points people

  439. to Jesus Christ.

  440. So let's go to Christ

  441. for the spiritual maladies

  442. of our kids.

  443. I'm sure this week,

  444. mothers,

  445. you have felt

  446. like your children

  447. might be demon-possessed.

  448. It's a high likelihood

  449. of that.

  450. Now Jesus responds

  451. to her,

  452. verse 27,

  453. and it seems so harsh,

  454. doesn't it?

  455. It seems so very harsh.

  456. Let the children

  457. be fed first,

  458. for it is not right

  459. to take the children's bread

  460. and throw it

  461. to the dogs.

  462. And this was,

  463. on the surface,

  464. pretty harsh.

  465. This would have been

  466. the appropriate

  467. ethnic response.

  468. This is the type of thing

  469. that a Jew would have said

  470. to a Gentile

  471. who was asking

  472. for some blessing

  473. from God.

  474. They would have seen

  475. themselves as special

  476. and set apart

  477. and called,

  478. in derision,

  479. called people dogs.

  480. Now Jesus was not

  481. without compassion

  482. at this point,

  483. but this was rather,

  484. he said this as a testing

  485. of her faith.

  486. So he gave to her

  487. a harsh statement,

  488. a statement that may have

  489. caused her to turn away

  490. altogether,

  491. to say this couldn't

  492. possibly be the man

  493. that could do this thing

  494. for my daughter,

  495. but instead,

  496. she gives to him

  497. this beautifully

  498. humble response.

  499. And beloved,

  500. humility is the beginning

  501. of our faith

  502. when we realize

  503. that we are,

  504. in fact,

  505. broken.

  506. That having once been

  507. image bearers of God,

  508. that has been destroyed.

  509. Not made a little worse,

  510. but destroyed

  511. by sin.

  512. That we have no capacity

  513. for that whatsoever

  514. apart from Christ.

  515. And so we come to him

  516. humbly.

  517. And look what she does.

  518. She answers him,

  519. verse 28,

  520. yes, Lord.

  521. Yes, she is in

  522. agreement with him.

  523. It would be wrong

  524. to do this thing.

  525. I am a dog,

  526. is what she's saying.

  527. I am the very thing

  528. you have accused me

  529. of being.

  530. Yet even the dogs

  531. under the table

  532. eat the children's crumbs,

  533. which is so clever

  534. of her.

  535. But it is her faith

  536. that elicits

  537. Jesus' response.

  538. It's not the cleverness

  539. of her argument.

  540. She didn't get him.

  541. He didn't go,

  542. oh, you got me.

  543. You got me.

  544. You tricked me into it.

  545. Now I must heal

  546. your daughter.

  547. But it was this response

  548. of faith.

  549. For this statement,

  550. you may go your way.

  551. The demon has left

  552. your daughter.

  553. You see,

  554. faith is what brings

  555. to us

  556. the blessings

  557. of God.

  558. I think she understood this.

  559. If she didn't get it,

  560. this is the thing

  561. that Mark is trying

  562. to communicate

  563. to us.

  564. Now remember Abraham.

  565. Remember the Abrahamic covenant

  566. that God said

  567. to Abraham,

  568. I will make you

  569. the father

  570. of many nations.

  571. And he was very old

  572. when this happened.

  573. If you would turn with me

  574. to Romans chapter 4.

    Romans 4 chapter mention

  575. Let me show you

  576. a bit of this

  577. before we move on

  578. in our text.

  579. Romans 4 beginning

  580. in verse 18.

  581. Paul writing here

  582. is speaking of Abraham

  583. in hope he,

  584. Abraham,

  585. believed against hope

  586. that he should become

  587. the father of many nations

  588. as he had been told

  589. so shall your offspring be.

  590. He did not weaken

  591. in faith

  592. when he considered

  593. his own body

  594. which was as good

  595. as dead

  596. since he was about

  597. 100 years old.

  598. Those of you who are

  599. approaching that,

  600. I'm sorry for the offense.

  601. Or when he considered

  602. the barrenness

  603. of Sarah's womb.

  604. Sarah had not born children

  605. in many, many, many years.

  606. No unbelief

  607. made him waver

  608. concerning the promise

  609. of God

  610. but he grew strong

  611. in his faith

  612. as he gave glory to God.

  613. Fully convinced

  614. that God was able

  615. to do what he had promised.

  616. That is why

  617. his faith

  618. was counted to him

  619. as righteousness.

  620. Now here's the key for us.

  621. But the words

  622. it was counted to him

  623. were not written

  624. for his sake alone

  625. but for ours also.

  626. It will be counted

  627. to us who believe

  628. in him

  629. who raised from the dead

  630. Jesus our Lord

  631. who was delivered up

  632. for our trespasses

  633. and raised

  634. for our justification.

  635. So if we believe

  636. in the God

  637. who raised Jesus

  638. from the dead

  639. we believe

  640. in that reality

  641. it will also be counted

  642. to us

  643. as righteousness.

  644. It is by our faith

  645. that we are saved.

  646. That is the great

  647. treatise of Romans.

  648. Right?

  649. Salvation by grace alone

  650. through faith alone

  651. in Christ alone.

  652. Right?

  653. So Jesus' response

  654. in verse 29

  655. is because her statement

  656. evidenced her faith

  657. and therefore

  658. he exercised

  659. he cast the demon

  660. out of the daughter

  661. and we get the affirmation

  662. of that in verse 30.

  663. She goes home

  664. and yes indeed

  665. Mark records for us

  666. it happened.

  667. Jesus spoke it

  668. and it did in fact

  669. happen.

  670. What a beautiful

  671. beautiful response

  672. of humility

  673. and faith.

  674. He then leaves the region

  675. making the circuitous route

  676. and going to the region

  677. of the Decapolis

  678. and we see the man

  679. who was deaf

  680. and had a speech impediment.

  681. Some of your texts

  682. might say that he was mute.

  683. I looked a little bit

  684. just for interest

  685. into that this week

  686. and the Greek

  687. really seems to be

  688. more properly rendered

  689. speech impediment.

  690. Couldn't speak clearly.

  691. A stutter.

  692. Something of that type.

  693. It doesn't really matter though.

  694. He couldn't hear

  695. and something was wrong

  696. with the way he spoke.

  697. This region of the Decapolis

  698. was a region containing

  699. ten prominent Gentile cities.

  700. It was made up

  701. of many more cities.

  702. It's a big region

  703. if you get curious

  704. and you want to flip

  705. to the back of your Bible.

  706. It's the region

  707. that's primarily

  708. the whole region

  709. to the east

  710. of the Sea of Galilee.

  711. And we see again

  712. some evidence

  713. of faith.

  714. We see in verse 32

  715. at least likely

  716. I think

  717. he's got a group

  718. that bring him

  719. to Jesus.

  720. Now I got in a conversation

  721. with this text

  722. with my father

  723. this morning

  724. and he made a really

  725. really great point to me

  726. and I just would like

  727. to bring it up

  728. for you.

  729. We see constantly

  730. throughout the Gospels

  731. we see it here

  732. in the Gospel of Mark

  733. this encounter

  734. with the scribes

  735. and the Pharisees

  736. and it seems to be

  737. a thing that increases.

  738. You see because

  739. Jesus was coming

  740. and he was destroying

  741. the religion

  742. that they had set up.

  743. And this was not

  744. simply a religion

  745. that was something

  746. they did just in

  747. devotion to God

  748. but it gained for them

  749. a great deal of power

  750. a great deal of wealth.

  751. There was a structure

  752. that was in place

  753. that was very beneficial

  754. to them

  755. on this side

  756. of heaven

  757. and that's not something

  758. that they wanted

  759. to find destroyed

  760. and so we see

  761. there's constantly

  762. a little group

  763. of these guys

  764. following around

  765. looking for occasion

  766. to step in

  767. and interject

  768. ask questions

  769. to try to get him

  770. to falter

  771. and to fail

  772. at some point

  773. so they could accuse him

  774. of not being

  775. who he said

  776. that he is.

  777. And my dad proposed

  778. that it's possible

  779. and I have to

  780. mull this over

  781. a bit more

  782. it's very possible

  783. that the people

  784. who brought this man

  785. being the they

  786. we find at the beginning

  787. of verse 32

  788. may have in fact

  789. been a group

  790. of Pharisees

  791. and the reason

  792. that that could be

  793. possible

  794. is because they asked

  795. they begged him

  796. to lay his hand

  797. on him

  798. and this would have

  799. been a Jewish

  800. thing to do

  801. I don't know

  802. it's possible

  803. that this is the case

  804. it also could be

  805. just a group of friends

  806. maybe they were

  807. even Jewish

  808. living in the

  809. Decapolis region

  810. and they brought

  811. to him

  812. their friend

  813. and begged him

  814. that word

  815. is a challenging one

  816. in that view

  817. but they begged him

  818. to do this

  819. so we see

  820. possibly

  821. that they had

  822. faith in this regard

  823. maybe not

  824. maybe they were

  825. coming

  826. looking for a sign

  827. looking to do

  828. something to

  829. bring an accusation

  830. we see

  831. in chapter 8

  832. Jesus is going to

  833. feed 4,000

  834. and the very next

  835. thing we see

  836. is Pharisees

  837. demanding a sign

  838. from him

  839. so questionably

  840. his friends had faith

  841. but we do see

  842. that he does

  843. the man that

  844. they bring to him

  845. this man who is deaf

  846. and has some type

  847. of speech impediment

  848. does in fact

  849. have faith

  850. the beginning

  851. of verse 33

  852. we record

  853. that he went

  854. with Jesus

  855. right

  856. Jesus takes him

  857. aside

  858. he takes him

  859. aside from the

  860. crowd

  861. privately

  862. the man goes

  863. with him

  864. the man was

  865. capable

  866. of not going

  867. with him

  868. and walking

  869. away

  870. but he does

  871. go in fact

  872. with him

  873. and he has

  874. faith that this

  875. man can do

  876. something

  877. for him

  878. now the

  879. interesting

  880. question in

  881. this text

  882. and this

  883. miracle by the

  884. way is only

  885. recorded in the

  886. gospel of

  887. mark

  888. the interesting

  889. question is

  890. why did

  891. Jesus pull

  892. the man

  893. aside

  894. from the

  895. crowd

  896. we know

  897. that Jesus

  898. performed miracles

  899. not as the

  900. primary purpose

  901. of his ministry

  902. but he performed

  903. miracles

  904. to give

  905. evidence to

  906. to give

  907. power

  908. to give

  909. credence

  910. to the

  911. message

  912. that he

  913. was

  914. preaching

  915. it was

  916. constantly

  917. a way

  918. to draw

  919. people

  920. to the

  921. very

  922. thing

  923. he was

  924. trying

  925. to say

  926. to them

  927. and that

  928. was the

  929. gospel

  930. of the

  931. kingdom

  932. of God

  933. so why

  934. does he

  935. pull

  936. this

  937. man

  938. aside

  939. and it

  940. actually

  941. says

  942. he pulls

  943. him

  944. aside

  945. privately

  946. which

  947. I would

  948. presume

  949. !

  950. means it

  951. was just

  952. this

  953. man

  954. and

  955. Jesus

  956. maybe

  957. some

  958. of the

  959. disciples

  960. were

  961. around

  962. him

  963. but

  964. he

  965. gets

  966. them

  967. away

  968. from

  969. the

  970. crowd

  971. so

  972. people

  973. aren't

  974. witnessing

  975. this

  976. thing

  977. that

  978. he's

  979. about

  980. to

  981. do

  982. why

  983. did

  984. he

  985. do

  986. this

  987. well

  988. the clue

  989. is

  990. in what

  991. he

  992. did

  993. the

  994. last part

  995. of 33

  996. verse

  997. 34

  998. he puts

  999. his fingers

  1000. in his

  1001. ears

  1002. after

  1003. he

  1004. spits

  1005. he

  1006. touches

  1007. his

  1008. tongue

  1009. he

  1010. looks

  1011. up

  1012. to

  1013. heaven

  1014. he

  1015. sighs

  1016. says

  1017. to

  1018. him

  1019. which

  1020. is

  1021. so

  1022. he

  1023. goes

  1024. through

  1025. this

  1026. interesting

  1027. thing

  1028. now

  1029. this

  1030. is

  1031. the

  1032. Jesus

  1033. that

  1034. people

  1035. have

  1036. been

  1037. touching

  1038. his

  1039. garment

  1040. and

  1041. he's

  1042. been

  1043. healing

  1044. them

  1045. he

  1046. has

  1047. simply

  1048. spoken

  1049. he

  1050. cast

  1051. a

  1052. demon

  1053. just

  1054. previously

  1055. he

  1056. cast

  1057. a

  1058. demon

  1059. out

  1060. of

  1061. a

  1062. little

  1063. girl

  1064. from

  1065. a

  1066. distance

  1067. we

  1068. don't

  1069. know

  1070. how

  1071. far

  1072. but

  1073. he

  1074. said

  1075. the

  1076. demon

  1077. is

  1078. gone

  1079. he

  1080. could

  1081. have

  1082. done

  1083. this

  1084. without

  1085. going

  1086. through

  1087. this

  1088. practice

  1089. of

  1090. it

  1091. seems

  1092. some

  1093. !

  1094. incantation

  1095. that

  1096. he's

  1097. doing

  1098. here

  1099. but

  1100. think

  1101. about

  1102. the

  1103. man

  1104. that

  1105. he's

  1106. doing

  1107. this

  1108. for

  1109. this

  1110. man

  1111. can't

  1112. hear

  1113. anything

  1114. that

  1115. he

  1116. would

  1117. say

  1118. there

  1119. may

  1120. have

  1121. been

  1122. some

  1123. form

  1124. of

  1125. sign

  1126. language

  1127. in

  1128. this

  1129. day

  1130. but

  1131. I

  1132. don't

  1133. think

  1134. Jesus

  1135. knew

  1136. it

  1137. so

  1138. he

  1139. did

  1140. the

  1141. thing

  1142. some

  1143. version

  1144. of

  1145. sign

  1146. language

  1147. to

  1148. show

  1149. the

  1150. man

  1151. what

  1152. it

  1153. was

  1154. he

  1155. was

  1156. healing

  1157. him

  1158. from

  1159. how

  1160. it

  1161. was

  1162. that

  1163. he

  1164. was

  1165. going

  1166. commonly

  1167. connected

  1168. to

  1169. healing

  1170. and

  1171. medicinal

  1172. things

  1173. I

  1174. did

  1175. way

  1176. too

  1177. much

  1178. study

  1179. on

  1180. that

  1181. this

  1182. week

  1183. and

  1184. none

  1185. of

  1186. the

  1187. details

  1188. are

  1189. important

  1190. for

  1191. you

  1192. at

  1193. all

  1194. but

  1195. there

  1196. would

  1197. have

  1198. been

  1199. an

  1200. understanding

  1201. of

  1202. spitting

  1203. and

  1204. saliva

  1205. we'll

  1206. see

  1207. later

  1208. in

  1209. Mark

  1210. Jesus

  1211. spits

  1212. in

  1213. some

  1214. mud

  1215. and

  1216. puts

  1217. it

  1218. on

  1219. a

  1220. blind

  1221. man's

  1222. eyes

  1223. for

  1224. the

  1225. same

  1226. reason

  1227. right

  1228. so

  1229. he

  1230. does

  1231. this

  1232. thing

  1233. physically

  1234. for

  1235. him

  1236. so

  1237. that

  1238. the

  1239. man

  1240. understands

  1241. what

  1242. he

  1243. is

  1244. doing

  1245. he

  1246. looks

  1247. up

  1248. to

  1249. heaven

  1250. so

  1251. that

  1252. the

  1253. man

  1254. knows

  1255. that

  1256. it's

  1257. God

  1258. who's

  1259. going

  1260. to

  1261. heal

  1262. him

  1263. and

  1264. then

  1265. he

  1266. commands

  1267. that

  1268. he

  1269. be

  1270. made

  1271. well

  1272. right

  1273. so

  1274. why

  1275. did

  1276. he

  1277. pull

  1278. the

  1279. man

  1280. aside

  1281. from

  1282. the

  1283. crowd

  1284. and

  1285. I

  1286. believe

  1287. the

  1288. reason

  1289. is

  1290. because

  1291. he

  1292. didn't

  1293. want

  1294. anybody

  1295. in

  1296. the

  1297. crowd

  1298. to

  1299. think

  1300. that

  1301. it

  1302. was

  1303. this

  1304. !

  1305. magic

  1306. incantation

  1307. this

  1308. thing

  1309. he

  1310. did

  1311. that

  1312. caused

  1313. the

  1314. man

  1315. to

  1316. be

  1317. healed

  1318. that

  1319. God

  1320. himself

  1321. is

  1322. the

  1323. one

  1324. who

  1325. healed

  1326. and

  1327. he

  1328. didn't

  1329. want

  1330. anybody

  1331. to

  1332. think

  1333. otherwise

  1334. he

  1335. wanted

  1336. glory

  1337. placed

  1338. in

  1339. the

  1340. proper

  1341. location

  1342. I

  1343. think

  1344. that's

  1345. why

  1346. so

  1347. he

  1348. so

  1349. he

  1350. touches

  1351. the

  1352. man

  1353. he

  1354. commands

  1355. and

  1356. interestingly

  1357. as he

  1358. gives

  1359. his

  1360. command

  1361. in

  1362. Aramaic

  1363. which

  1364. would

  1365. be

  1366. open

  1367. he's

  1368. actually

  1369. giving

  1370. the

  1371. command

  1372. to

  1373. the

  1374. ears

  1375. which

  1376. I

  1377. just

  1378. find

  1379. so

  1380. fascinating

  1381. and

  1382. to

  1383. the

  1384. tongue

  1385. who

  1386. commands

  1387. even

  1388. your

  1389. ears

  1390. and

  1391. my

  1392. tongue

  1393. be

  1394. opened

  1395. and

  1396. they

  1397. obey

  1398. what

  1399. he

  1400. said

  1401. to

  1402. do

  1403. and

  1404. then

  1405. note

  1406. that

  1407. he

  1408. sighs

  1409. he

  1410. looks

  1411. up

  1412. to

  1413. heaven

  1414. he

  1415. sighs

  1416. and

  1417. I

  1418. think

  1419. this

  1420. speaks

  1421. to

  1422. the

  1423. compassion

  1424. of

  1425. Christ

  1426. as

  1427. he

  1428. has

  1429. pulled

  1430. this

  1431. man

  1432. off

  1433. to

  1434. the

  1435. side

  1436. and

  1437. he

  1438. is

  1439. about

  1440. to

  1441. !

  1442. heal

  1443. them

  1444. as

  1445. he

  1446. and

  1447. felt

  1448. a

  1449. sorrow

  1450. for

  1451. the

  1452. effects

  1453. of

  1454. sin

  1455. on

  1456. the

  1457. world

  1458. and

  1459. I

  1460. believe

  1461. that's

  1462. why

  1463. he

  1464. sighs

  1465. that

  1466. as

  1467. he

  1468. looks

  1469. up

  1470. to

  1471. heaven

  1472. he

  1473. gives

  1474. another

  1475. one

  1476. another

  1477. one

  1478. another

  1479. created

  1480. being

  1481. another

  1482. child

  1483. that

  1484. is

  1485. being

  1486. punished

  1487. because

  1488. of

  1489. the

  1490. effects

  1491. of

  1492. sin

  1493. in

  1494. this

  1495. world

  1496. and

  1497. so

  1498. we

  1499. see

  1500. this

  1501. great

  1502. outflow

  1503. of

  1504. compassion

  1505. for

  1506. this

  1507. man

  1508. verse

  1509. 35

  1510. his

  1511. tongue

  1512. was

  1513. released

  1514. and

  1515. he

  1516. spoke

  1517. plainly

  1518. whatever

  1519. was

  1520. the

  1521. issue

  1522. with

  1523. his

  1524. tongue

  1525. he

  1526. can

  1527. now

  1528. speak

  1529. very

  1530. plainly

  1531. and

  1532. all

  1533. of

  1534. this

  1535. and

  1536. I

  1537. believe

  1538. the

  1539. reason

  1540. that

  1541. Mark

  1542. was

  1543. led

  1544. by

  1545. the

  1546. spirit

  1547. to

  1548. record

  1549. this

  1550. is

  1551. a

  1552. fulfillment

  1553. of

  1554. a

  1555. prophecy

  1556. he

  1557. did

  1558. a

  1559. thing

  1560. that

  1561. only

  1562. God

  1563. could

  1564. do

  1565. Isaiah

    Isaiah 35:5

  1566. chapter

  1567. 35

  1568. verse

  1569. 5

  1570. and

  1571. 6

  1572. then

  1573. the

  1574. ears

  1575. of

  1576. the

  1577. deaf

  1578. unstopped

  1579. then

  1580. shall

  1581. the

  1582. lame

  1583. man

  1584. leap

  1585. like

  1586. a

  1587. deer

  1588. and

  1589. the

  1590. tongue

  1591. of

  1592. the

  1593. mute

  1594. sing

  1595. for

  1596. joy

  1597. for

  1598. waters

  1599. break

  1600. forth

  1601. in

  1602. the

  1603. wilderness

  1604. and

  1605. streams

  1606. in

  1607. the

  1608. desert

  1609. so

  1610. he

  1611. had

  1612. done

  1613. a

  1614. thing

  1615. that

  1616. only

  1617. he

  1618. could

  1619. do

  1620. and

  1621. it

  1622. was

  1623. fitting

  1624. that

  1625. one

  1626. of

  1627. the

  1628. gospel

  1629. accounts

  1630. that

  1631. one

  1632. of

  1633. the

  1634. writers

  1635. was

  1636. inspired

  1637. to

  1638. record

  1639. this

  1640. thing

  1641. that

  1642. we

  1643. might

  1644. see

  1645. it

  1646. take

  1647. place

  1648. and

  1649. the

  1650. response

  1651. of

  1652. the

  1653. people

  1654. when

  1655. he

  1656. goes

  1657. back

  1658. there

  1659. was

  1660. a

  1661. man

  1662. that

  1663. they

  1664. knew

  1665. he

  1666. goes

  1667. back

  1668. now

  1669. he

  1670. can

  1671. hear

  1672. now

  1673. he

  1674. can

  1675. speak

  1676. verse

  1677. 37

  1678. they

  1679. were

  1680. astonished

  1681. beyond

  1682. measure

  1683. they

  1684. were

  1685. incredibly

  1686. astonished

  1687. more

  1688. astonishment

  1689. took place

  1690. than we

  1691. could

  1692. possibly

  1693. measure

  1694. and

  1695. this

  1696. is

  1697. their

  1698. phrase

  1699. this

  1700. is

  1701. the

  1702. thing

  1703. they

  1704. say

  1705. He

  1706. has

  1707. done

  1708. all

  1709. things

  1710. well

  1711. he

  1712. has

  1713. done

  1714. all

  1715. things

  1716. well

  1717. !

  1718. He

  1719. even

  1720. makes

  1721. He

  1722. had

  1723. done

  1724. so

  1725. many

  1726. things

  1727. right

  1728. He

  1729. had

  1730. cast

  1731. a

  1732. legion

  1733. of

  1734. demons

  1735. out

  1736. of

  1737. a

  1738. man

  1739. they

  1740. knew

  1741. about

  1742. this

  1743. this

  1744. news

  1745. had

  1746. traveled

  1747. around

  1748. the

  1749. area

  1750. He

  1751. even

  1752. makes

  1753. the

  1754. deaf

  1755. hear

  1756. and

  1757. the

  1758. mute

  1759. speak

  1760. I

  1761. think

  1762. we

  1763. can

  1764. hear

  1765. in

  1766. this

  1767. statement

  1768. the

  1769. echoes

  1770. of

  1771. Genesis

  1772. 131

  1773. and

  1774. God

  1775. saw

  1776. everything

  1777. that

  1778. he

  1779. had

  1780. made

  1781. and

  1782. behold

  1783. it

  1784. was

  1785. very

  1786. good

  1787. Jesus

  1788. is

  1789. God

  1790. incarnate

  1791. and he

  1792. proves

  1793. that

  1794. to us

  1795. once

  1796. again

  1797. as he

  1798. expresses

  1799. compassion

  1800. for

  1801. non-Jewish

  1802. people

  1803. and works

  1804. in them

  1805. a responsive

  1806. faith

  1807. beloved

  1808. we

  1809. are

  1810. now

  1811. given

  1812. to

  1813. the

  1814. very

  1815. same

  1816. task

  1817. and

  1818. I

  1819. hope

  1820. as

  1821. we've

  1822. been

  1823. looking

  1824. through

  1825. mark

  1826. as

  1827. we

  1828. will

  1829. continue

  1830. to

  1831. do

  1832. so

  1833. as

  1834. we

  1835. peer

  1836. at

  1837. the

  1838. life

  1839. of

  1840. Christ

  1841. we

  1842. will

  1843. desire

  1844. to

  1845. be

  1846. more

  1847. like

  1848. him

  1849. compassionately

  1850. pouring

  1851. out

  1852. our

  1853. lives

  1854. for

  1855. the

  1856. sake

  1857. of

  1858. the

  1859. glory

  1860. of

  1861. God

  1862. and

  1863. the

  1864. advancing

  1865. of

  1866. his

  1867. kingdom

  1868. let's

  1869. pray

  1870. together

  1871. God
