  1. So join me as I read to you Mark chapter 9 verses 1 through 13.

    Mark 9:1–13

  2. And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, and they were talking with Jesus.

  3. And Peter said to Jesus, Rabbi, it is good that we are here.

  4. Let us make three tents, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah.

  5. For he did not know what to say, for they were terrified.

  6. And a cloud overshadowed them, and a voice came out of the cloud,

  7. This is my beloved son. Listen to him.

  8. And suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone with them but Jesus only.

  9. And as they were coming down the mountain, he charged them to tell no one what they had seen

  10. until the Son of Man had risen from the dead.

  11. So they kept the matter to themselves, questioning what this rising from the dead might mean.

  12. And they asked him, Why do the scribes say that first Elijah must come?

  13. And he said to them, Elijah does come first to restore all things.

  14. And how is it written of the Son of Man that he should suffer many things and be treated with contempt?

  15. But I tell you that Elijah has come, and they did to him whatever they pleased, as it is written of him.

  16. This is God's word to us.

  17. It was written for his glory and for our good.

  18. We would all do well to listen to it in order to believe its promises and obey its commands.

  19. Let's pray together.

  20. Father God, we are always at all times in desperate need of you.

  21. But Father, it's in times like this that I feel that most.

  22. And I need you.

  23. I desperately need you to come and to help me preach the word of God accurately and poignantly this day.

  24. And Father, we all need you to work by your Spirit to apply your word to us to our hearts,

  25. that they might be changed from one degree of glory to another.

  26. Father, this day do not neglect your people.

  27. Make us in greater degrees into the image of Christ that we might glorify your name.

  28. And we pray this in Jesus Christ's name.

  29. Amen.

  30. So, we've come to a rather exciting part of Mark's Gospel account.

  31. In fact, the beginning of eight and a half chapters really kind of seem to be an introduction

  32. to where we've arrived so far as we came to verse 29,

  33. excuse me, yep, 29,

  34. where Jesus asks the question of the disciples,

  35. but who do you say that I am?

  36. And Peter answers him with this massive proclamation,

  37. you are the Christ, the anointed one of God,

  38. the prophet, priest, and king who reigns forever.

  39. But we see very quickly that he had a misunderstanding.

  40. In fact, we're going to see a couple of other passion predictions on Jesus' part.

  41. We find those in the following, verse 31 and verse 32.

  42. And there's always a misunderstanding response on the behalf of the disciples.

  43. But we begin the great teaching period as Jesus is making his journey toward Jerusalem.

  44. We're about six months out from the crucifixion at this point,

  45. and he's spent quite a few years now with the disciples.

  46. And they're just now starting to grasp who he is and what the kingdom of God will look like.

  47. We see the misunderstanding on Peter's part in verse 32 as he takes him aside and rebukes him

  48. to say to him,

  49. how could it possibly be that you are the Christ and that you will suffer and die?

  50. May it never be.

  51. Peter had yet to understand what the kingdom was really going to look like,

  52. that was coming in spirit for now,

  53. not in the physical realm,

  54. but in the spiritual realm for this period of time.

  55. And Jesus' response to him is a scathing one.

  56. He says to him,

  57. get behind me, Satan,

  58. for you are not setting your mind on the things of God,

  59. but on the things of man.

  60. And he goes on, as we spoke last week,

  61. to raise the bar for what discipleship would look like.

  62. He says to them,

  63. if anyone would come after me,

  64. let him deny himself,

  65. take up his cross,

  66. and follow me.

  67. That is,

  68. deny himself,

  69. set aside his self-governing,

  70. his very being,

  71. in order to follow Jesus.

  72. Verse 35,

  73. whoever would save his life,

  74. will lose it.

  75. Whatever loses his life for my sake and the gospels,

  76. will save it.

  77. He's beginning to explain to the disciples,

  78. and I hope that we're seeing very clearly,

  79. the way in which he came to serve the world.

  80. This apparent paradox that seems to exist,

  81. that he would come and reign by first becoming a servant,

  82. by emptying himself,

  83. and dying on behalf of the church.

  84. It's incredible.

  85. Absolutely incredible.

  86. And we see on the heels of Peter's great proclamation,

  87. you are the Christ.

  88. We have not followed you in vain.

  89. You are the anointed one.

  90. You are going to come,

  91. and you are going to reign.

  92. And then Jesus says to him,

  93. but first,

  94. I'm going to die.

  95. And if you want to follow me,

  96. you're going to do the same.

  97. You're also going to suffer and die.

  98. Jesus,

  99. in his great compassion,

  100. brings along a beautiful encouragement to the disciples.

  101. And he says this to them in verse 1 of chapter 9.

  102. Truly I say to you,

  103. there are some standing here,

  104. those who he was speaking to,

  105. who will not taste death

  106. until they see the kingdom of God

  107. after it has come with power.

  108. And there's a lot of different opinions

  109. about what Jesus meant.

  110. All of them,

  111. save the right opinion,

  112. seem crazy to me.

  113. Because then,

  114. something happens.

  115. Immediately following this statement,

  116. six days later,

  117. but after this,

  118. the record is,

  119. the transfiguration occurred.

  120. So he's saying to the disciples,

  121. some of you,

  122. who are standing here,

  123. are going to get to see me transfigured.

  124. You're going to get to get a glimpse of my glory.

  125. You're going to get to see the kingdom

  126. in its power

  127. before you die.

  128. This was a great act of encouragement to them.

  129. To take some of the disciples up onto the mountain

  130. and say,

  131. see,

  132. it's worth following me.

  133. I am God's visible glory.

  134. Watch this.

  135. He's said things to them now.

  136. Now he's going to show them something.

  137. Something that they can hold on to

  138. and they can take

  139. through the next six months

  140. and the years that would follow

  141. to their very own deaths

  142. in pursuit of the gospel

  143. of the kingdom of God.

  144. It's a beautiful,

  145. precious thing

  146. that Jesus does for them there

  147. in this

  148. incredible miracle.

  149. This is by far

  150. the greatest miracle

  151. he's performed so far

  152. and you probably will never see this

  153. in a list of

  154. Jesus' miracles

  155. but the transfiguration

  156. is amazing.

  157. Next to only maybe

  158. the resurrection itself,

  159. this is the greatest,

  160. it could be argued,

  161. of miracles.

  162. But before we get into

  163. the particulars

  164. of the transfiguration itself,

  165. I first want to deal with

  166. verses 11,

  167. 12,

  168. and 13.

  169. So if you'll allow me,

  170. we're going to jump to the end

  171. of our text for the day,

  172. look at 11,

  173. 12,

  174. and 13

  175. and we'll back back up

  176. to verse 2.

  177. So they're coming down the mountain

  178. having seen this

  179. miraculous transfiguration,

  180. this conversation

  181. that takes place

  182. between Jesus,

  183. Elijah,

  184. and Moses,

  185. having God cover them

  186. with a cloud

  187. and speak out of heaven

  188. to them.

  189. And they're coming down

  190. the mountain

  191. and they say,

  192. why do the scribes say

  193. that first Elijah must come?

  194. And then Jesus gives

  195. explanation to that.

  196. He gives some explanation

  197. to the fact that

  198. Elijah has in fact come.

  199. Rightly,

  200. the scribes,

  201. which were the religious elite,

  202. the studious religious

  203. of that day,

  204. say that Elijah must come first

  205. and they get this

  206. from Malachi chapter 4,

    Malachi 4 chapter mention

  207. the last of the prophets

  208. before God goes silent

  209. for 400 years.

  210. Malachi said in chapter 4,

  211. verse 5 and 6,

  212. Behold,

  213. I will send you Elijah,

  214. the prophet,

  215. before the great and awesome

  216. day of the Lord comes.

  217. And he will turn the hearts

  218. of fathers to their children

  219. and the hearts of children

  220. to their fathers,

  221. lest I come and strike the land

  222. with the decree

  223. of utter destruction.

  224. So they believed

  225. that Elijah was going to come

  226. reincarnate.

  227. He was going to come

  228. back to life.

  229. In fact,

  230. one of the great differences

  231. between the Pharisees

  232. and the Sadducees

  233. is that the Pharisees

  234. believed in the resurrection

  235. of the dead.

  236. This was part of that reason.

  237. They were waiting for Elijah

  238. to be resurrected

  239. and to come back

  240. and do this,

  241. be the heralder of Jesus,

  242. the Lord who would come

  243. and reign,

  244. the Christ.

  245. Mark records that a number

  246. of people thought

  247. that Jesus was Elijah,

  248. that it was possible

  249. that he was the forerunner

  250. of the Christ.

  251. We see that in Mark 6,

  252. 15 and 8,

  253. 28.

  254. The prophecy that Elijah

  255. would precede Jesus

  256. is fulfilled by John the Baptizer.

  257. Look at Mark's introductory statements

  258. concerning John the Baptizer

  259. in chapter 1, verse 2

  260. from Isaiah.

  261. They're incredibly similar

  262. to a previous prophecy

  263. of Malachi in chapter 3

  264. where he says,

  265. Behold, I send my messenger

  266. and he will prepare the way

  267. before me.

  268. How do we know for sure

  269. that Jesus was saying

  270. that John the Baptizer

  271. was the predicted Elijah?

  272. How can we know that for sure?

  273. The Bible tells us for sure.

  274. In the same account,

  275. Matthew chapter 17,

    Matthew 17:13

  276. verse 13,

  277. Matthew records,

  278. Then the disciples understood

  279. that he was speaking to them

  280. of John the Baptist.

  281. So John the Baptist

  282. is the Elijah

  283. that they're speaking of.

  284. He is the forerunner.

  285. He is the fulfillment

  286. of the Old Testament

  287. prophecy of Malachi.

  288. Therefore,

  289. Jesus is

  290. the Christ.

  291. Isn't it incredible

  292. as we look at the lives

  293. of these disciples

  294. that they have spent

  295. all this time

  296. with Jesus,

  297. we see his words,

  298. we read them,

  299. and their response,

  300. the faithlessness

  301. on their part.

  302. And I just want to remind you

  303. as we walk through

  304. these next couple of chapters together,

  305. the reason that Mark records

  306. the healing of the blind man

  307. at Bethsaida,

  308. we find that in verse 20 through to 26,

  309. is to show us

  310. that Jesus is the Lord

  311. over spiritual,

  312. excuse me,

  313. physical sight

  314. as well as spiritual sight.

  315. So we saw a miracle

  316. where he healed a man

  317. of his physical blindness

  318. in degrees,

  319. and now we're seeing him

  320. do the same

  321. in degrees

  322. with the disciples.

  323. It's beyond me.

  324. Sometimes you read this

  325. and you go,

  326. how could you not get this?

  327. How can you not understand?

  328. But the spiritual scales

  329. were being lifted

  330. from their eyes.

  331. It was being unfolded for them.

  332. They were getting it in part

  333. and they would get it

  334. more completely

  335. as Jesus' death

  336. and resurrection occurs.

  337. So back to verse 2.

  338. Jump back up there

  339. to verse 2.

  340. Now remember that they have

  341. traveled from Bethsaida

  342. to the region of Caesarea Philippi.

  343. There's been some teaching

  344. happening here

  345. and then there's this statement,

  346. truly I say to you,

  347. there's some standing here

  348. who will not taste death

  349. until they see the kingdom of God

  350. after it's come with power

  351. and then six days.

  352. Six days happens.

  353. We don't know exactly

  354. where they went to.

  355. I'm going to tell you

  356. a bit about the high mountain

  357. and where I believe

  358. they headed off to.

  359. But we see a record

  360. that six days has passed.

  361. If you study this further later,

  362. you also will note

  363. that in Luke,

  364. Luke records that eight days

  365. have passed.

  366. And I don't want you

  367. to think at this point

  368. that the scripture

  369. has failed to be inerrant.

  370. It was common in this day

  371. to measure time

  372. in two different ways.

  373. Here we see in Matthew

  374. and in Mark,

  375. they started counting

  376. on the next day

  377. and they counted the days

  378. up to the day prior

  379. to the transfiguration.

  380. Six days.

  381. Luke instead

  382. counted the day

  383. he said it

  384. as well as the day

  385. the transfiguration happened.

  386. Therefore,

  387. eight days.

  388. Very common.

  389. And interchangeable

  390. in that way.

  391. So six or eight,

  392. whichever way

  393. you want to count it.

  394. I might even count that

  395. as seven personally.

  396. Roughly a week later,

  397. they take a bit

  398. of a retreat.

  399. And he goes away

  400. with some closer buddies.

  401. This was kind of

  402. the inner circle

  403. in Jesus' day.

  404. In his humanity,

  405. he had a limited capacity

  406. for personal relationship.

  407. He had his twelve

  408. and within his twelve

  409. he had three.

  410. And we see this consistently.

  411. These are the ones

  412. that went and prayed

  413. with him in the Garden

  414. of Gethsemane

  415. before his crucifixion.

  416. Peter and James and John,

  417. the brothers,

  418. James and John,

  419. the sons of Zebedee.

  420. And he leads them up

  421. onto a high mountain

  422. by themselves.

  423. Now the high mountain

  424. tradition holds

  425. that the mountain

  426. is Mount Tabor,

  427. which is down

  428. on the western side

  429. of the Sea of Galilee.

  430. Could have been traveled to.

  431. A lot of the speculation

  432. is because of the days

  433. that had passed.

  434. They may have been

  435. traveling in those days

  436. and traveled to

  437. Mount Tabor.

  438. Although,

  439. the record is that

  440. it's a high mountain

  441. and Mount Tabor

  442. is not all that much taller

  443. than the other mountains

  444. in the region.

  445. It's not really a high mountain.

  446. It's just a mountain.

  447. If you look at pictures of it,

  448. it looks really more

  449. like a hill.

  450. It's 1,800 feet

  451. above sea level.

  452. More likely,

  453. I would say to you,

  454. that the high mountain

  455. is Mount Hermon,

  456. which is just north

  457. of the region

  458. of Caesarea Philippi.

  459. In fact,

  460. it would have taken

  461. quite some time

  462. to climb

  463. because it's 9,200 feet

  464. above sea level.

  465. It has snow on it

  466. much of the year

  467. in this region.

  468. Either way,

  469. it doesn't really matter.

  470. They're up on a high mountain

  471. by themselves

  472. and they go up there

  473. in order

  474. to pray.

  475. Luke 9, 28

  476. states that they went up

  477. on the mountain

  478. to pray.

  479. And in verse 32,

  480. it says that they were

  481. heavy with sleep.

  482. They were heavy

  483. with sleep.

  484. It's likely

  485. in Luke's account

  486. that as they went up

  487. there to pray together,

  488. just like they did

  489. in the Garden of Gethsemane,

  490. they fell asleep.

  491. And in our Garden of Gethsemane

  492. account,

  493. they're asleep

  494. with sorrow.

  495. Have you ever been

  496. in such a sorrowful situation,

  497. lamenting something

  498. that's happened

  499. in your life

  500. that all you want

  501. to do

  502. is go to sleep?

  503. I have.

  504. Seems to be a bit

  505. of a salve

  506. for the tender heart.

  507. Forget about

  508. the troubles

  509. of the day

  510. and just go to sleep.

  511. And so it's likely

  512. that as he takes them

  513. up onto the mountain

  514. that they're sorrowful.

  515. They have followed him,

  516. they have recognized him

  517. to be the Christ,

  518. but they have also seen

  519. that he's going

  520. to suffer and die

  521. and that they're going

  522. to as well

  523. if they're going

  524. to continue

  525. to follow him.

  526. And then we see

  527. this miracle.

  528. He was

  529. transfigured

  530. before them.

  531. Mark, to this point,

  532. has been so brief,

  533. so punchy,

  534. moved us along

  535. so quickly,

  536. and I believe

  537. that he's doing so

  538. to get us to this point,

  539. to get us to the last

  540. half of chapter 8

  541. and get us into chapter 9.

  542. This is kind of

  543. the watershed moment.

  544. He's pumped everything

  545. up to this point.

  546. Now everything flows away

  547. from this point

  548. in his record here,

  549. and he says to us,

  550. and he was

  551. transfigured

  552. before them.

  553. It's a simple,

  554. punchy statement.

  555. Come on, Mark.

  556. It's a little more.

  557. What actually

  558. happened here?

  559. We don't really know.

  560. In fact,

  561. Matthew and Luke

  562. don't give us

  563. a lot more detail.

  564. The word transfigured

  565. in the Greek

  566. is metamorpho.

  567. It's where we get

  568. metamorphosis from.

  569. It means literally

  570. changed in figure.

  571. His character,

  572. his essence,

  573. his being didn't change,

  574. but the way he looked

  575. changed.

  576. The account in Mark

  577. is his clothes

  578. became radiant,

  579. intensely white,

  580. as no one on earth

  581. could bleach them.

  582. There were people

  583. in this day

  584. that bleached clothing.

  585. No one could have

  586. accomplished this.

  587. It was a supernatural thing.

  588. His clothes,

  589. radiant,

  590. intensely white.

  591. Matthew 17, 2

  592. says his face

  593. shone like the sun

  594. and his clothes

  595. became white,

  596. as light.

  597. And Luke 9, 22

  598. says the appearance

  599. of his face

  600. was altered

  601. and his clothing

  602. became dazzling white.

  603. And that's our explanation

  604. of what the transfiguration

  605. looked like.

  606. But,

  607. you have to note

  608. these words,

  609. radiant,

  610. intensely white,

  611. whiter than anybody

  612. could bleat them,

  613. face like the sun,

  614. white as light.

  615. Clothing became

  616. dazzling white.

  617. Jesus' radiance here

  618. is very key.

  619. The way in which

  620. he was transfigured

  621. was very key

  622. to the encouragement

  623. of the disciples

  624. because

  625. whenever God appears

  626. to his people

  627. in the Old Testament,

  628. he appears in some sort

  629. of light phenomenon,

  630. some sort of appearance

  631. of light.

  632. His disciples were Jews.

  633. They knew this.

  634. They knew their Old Testament.

  635. They knew that when God

  636. showed up,

  637. this was how

  638. he showed up.

  639. A couple of examples

  640. of that.

  641. At the initiation

  642. of the priestly service

  643. in Leviticus 9,

  644. God appears as light.

  645. In Exodus 24,

  646. God appears to Moses

  647. as light.

  648. In Exodus 40,

    Exodus 40:34

  649. verses 34 and 35,

  650. the tabernacle

  651. is completed

  652. and God begins

  653. to dwell there

  654. as light,

  655. just above

  656. the Ark of the Covenant.

  657. We know this

  658. as God's

  659. Shekinah glory,

  660. which just means

  661. dwelling,

  662. the Shekinah glory

  663. of God.

  664. It dwelt

  665. in the tabernacle.

  666. In Ezekiel,

  667. we can see where

  668. God's Shekinah glory

  669. leaves the temple,

  670. travels up to a hill

  671. and departs

  672. to heaven.

  673. So it's very key

  674. that Jesus showed up

  675. in light.

  676. He transfigures

  677. in that way.

  678. It was a message

  679. to them that he is

  680. in fact who he says

  681. he was.

  682. All the miracles,

  683. all the things

  684. that he's performed

  685. up to this point

  686. had yet to give them

  687. the faith they needed

  688. to persevere.

  689. And here he shows up

  690. as God himself.

  691. He's radiant

  692. with light.

  693. Hebrews 1, 3a

  694. says he is the radiance

  695. of the glory

  696. of God.

  697. 2 Corinthians 4, 6

  698. Paul writes,

  699. God who said

  700. let light shine out

  701. of darkness

  702. has shown in our hearts

  703. to give the light

  704. of the knowledge

  705. of the glory of God

  706. in the face

  707. of Jesus Christ.

  708. Jesus Christ

  709. is often called

  710. the glory

  711. of God.

  712. The way that we

  713. can witness

  714. the glory

  715. of God.

  716. Moses asked

  717. to see God's glory

  718. as they were

  719. in the desert

  720. and God showed

  721. him his back.

  722. We get to behold

  723. Jesus,

  724. the Christ.

  725. We get to see him

  726. fully for who he is.

  727. We have record

  728. and account

  729. and we get to hold

  730. this in our hands.

  731. They got to stand

  732. on the mountain

  733. with him

  734. and see him

  735. transfigured,

  736. see him shine

  737. as light.

  738. As I said before,

  739. the brief account

  740. of this is a bit

  741. frustrating to me.

  742. I believe that

  743. the word of God

  744. is inspired

  745. and therefore

  746. it was told this way

  747. for this reason.

  748. I want more.

  749. I want to know

  750. a little bit more

  751. of what was going on.

  752. We've got a couple

  753. of other clues to it.

  754. Not much.

  755. John in his gospel,

  756. chapter 1,

  757. verse 4 says,

  758. in him was life

  759. and the life

  760. was the light

  761. of men.

  762. chapter 1,

  763. verses 16 through 18,

  764. Peter records,

  765. for we did not follow

  766. cleverly devised myths

  767. when we made known

  768. to you the power

  769. and coming

  770. of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  771. But we were witnesses

  772. of his majesty.

  773. He's speaking here

  774. of the transfiguration.

  775. For when he received

  776. honor and glory

  777. from God the Father

  778. and the voice

  779. was born to him

  780. by the majestic glory,

  781. this is my beloved son

  782. with whom I am well pleased,

  783. we ourselves heard

  784. this very voice

  785. born from heaven

  786. for we were with him

  787. on the holy mountain.

  788. And those are the accounts

  789. that we get

  790. of this amazing thing

  791. that happened

  792. in history.

  793. And it seems to me

  794. that they tend

  795. to relegate

  796. the miracle

  797. in order to exalt

  798. the person.

  799. That they wanted

  800. to set aside

  801. the fact that he was

  802. this shiny being,

  803. that he becomes

  804. something different

  805. in vision

  806. in order to exalt

  807. him and the message

  808. that he came

  809. to preach.

  810. Remember Mark,

    Mark 1:15

  811. chapter 1,

  812. verse 15,

  813. Jesus says,

  814. the time is fulfilled

  815. and the kingdom

  816. of God is at hand.

  817. Repent and believe

  818. in the gospel.

  819. And here we see,

  820. rather than becoming

  821. very mystical

  822. and focusing on

  823. this amazing thing,

  824. it must have been

  825. incredible to witness,

  826. they want to drive us

  827. back to the message.

  828. Repent and believe

  829. in the gospel.

  830. Jesus is who he says he is.

  831. He is the son of God,

  832. the one who's come

  833. to take away

  834. the sins of the world,

  835. the one who's come

  836. to make remission

  837. of sins for many.

  838. Repent and believe

  839. in the gospel.

  840. So they relegate

  841. the miracle

  842. in order to exalt

  843. the person

  844. and the message.

  845. In addition to

  846. him transfiguring,

  847. we see some other people

  848. show up in glory.

  849. They are Elijah

  850. and Moses.

  851. We see this in

  852. verse 4.

  853. And they were

  854. talking with Jesus.

  855. And why do you

  856. suppose they showed up?

  857. Why do we need

  858. a couple of people

  859. to show up?

  860. Let me say to you

  861. it's because,

  862. consistently through

  863. the scriptures,

  864. two or three witnesses

  865. were necessary

  866. to give credence

  867. to something,

  868. to make something

  869. final and true.

  870. Deuteronomy 19.15,

  871. the second half,

  872. says only on the evidence

  873. of two witnesses

  874. or of three witnesses

  875. shall a charge

  876. be established.

  877. Matthew 18.16

  878. says that dealing

  879. with sins

  880. in the church,

  881. that we should do so

  882. with two or three witnesses.

  883. Paul tells the church

  884. at Corinth

  885. in his second letter

  886. that he will bring

  887. charges by the evidence

  888. of two or three witnesses.

  889. 1 Timothy 5.19

  890. says,

  891. Do not admit

  892. to charge

  893. against an elder

  894. except on the evidence

  895. of two or three witnesses.

  896. This was very common

  897. of the day.

  898. This was the way

  899. in which you brought

  900. charges against

  901. or for

  902. an individual.

  903. And so Jesus

  904. is joined

  905. by two great witnesses,

  906. Moses and Elijah.

  907. Moses was,

  908. arguably,

  909. I believe,

  910. Israel's greatest leader.

  911. Led them out of captivity,

  912. away from this symbolic

  913. captivity to sin,

  914. out of Egypt,

  915. and into,

  916. eventually,

  917. with all the obstacles

  918. that came in the way,

  919. at least to the border

  920. of the promised land.

  921. It was Moses

  922. who gave the law.

  923. He was the

  924. arbiter of that.

  925. God gave it to him

  926. and he gave it to Israel.

  927. Elijah,

  928. again,

  929. arguably,

  930. but Elijah,

  931. I think,

  932. was Israel's

  933. greatest prophet.

  934. As Moses gave the law,

  935. Elijah guarded the law.

  936. Elijah said

  937. to the people of God

  938. over and over

  939. and over again,

  940. keep the commandments

  941. of God.

  942. And now they're

  943. in a conversation

  944. with Jesus

  945. who came and fulfilled

  946. the law.

  947. They were talking

  948. with Jesus.

  949. What were they

  950. talking about?

  951. What were they

  952. talking about?

  953. They were talking

  954. about the crucifixion.

  955. Again,

  956. how do we know this?

  957. The Bible tells us

  958. what they were talking about.

  959. In a different account,

  960. Luke chapter 9,

    Luke 9:30

  961. verse 30 and 31,

  962. And behold,

  963. two men were talking

  964. with him,

  965. Moses and Elijah,

  966. who appeared in glory

  967. and spoke

  968. of his departure.

  969. which he was about

  970. to accomplish

  971. at Jerusalem.

  972. This is what

  973. they were talking about.

  974. They were talking

  975. about the very thing

  976. that Jesus had said

  977. was going to happen.

  978. They're giving witness

  979. to the fact

  980. that as he's appearing,

  981. transfigured,

  982. he is the visible

  983. glory of God.

  984. The disciples can see this.

  985. They're having

  986. a conversation

  987. about the fact

  988. that he was going

  989. to suffer and die

  990. at the hands

  991. of the scribes

  992. and the Pharisees.

  993. They're giving

  994. account to the fact

  995. that what Jesus said

  996. was going to happen

  997. is going to happen.

  998. Elijah and Moses

  999. join with him

  1000. in affirming

  1001. this great reality.

  1002. And then Peter

  1003. butts in.

  1004. If Jesus and Elijah

  1005. and Moses

  1006. showed up today,

  1007. please don't interrupt

  1008. the conversation

  1009. that they're having.

  1010. Peter,

  1011. always the spokesman,

  1012. says to Jesus,

  1013. Rabbi,

  1014. it's good

  1015. that we are here.

  1016. Let us make

  1017. three tents,

  1018. one for you

  1019. and one for Moses,

  1020. one for Elijah,

1021. for he did not know

  1022. what to say,

  1023. for they were terrified.

  1024. A good record

  1025. that you shouldn't

  1026. say anything at all.

  1027. At all.

  1028. However,

  1029. Peter was,

  1030. even though he was

  1031. a simple man,

1032. he had his theology right.

1033. He had his theology right.

  1034. The transfiguration

  1035. happened in the month

  1036. of Tishri,

1037. which as I've said before,

  1038. was six months

  1039. before Passover.

  1040. And there was

  1041. something happening

  1042. at the very time

  1043. in Jerusalem

  1044. that they're up

  1045. on the mountain

  1046. and this is happening.

  1047. There was something

  1048. happening.

  1049. It's called the Feast

  1050. of Tabernacles.

1051. And it was a feast

  1052. that came and happened

  1053. to commemorate

  1054. the Exodus.

  1055. Being led out of

  1056. one kingdom

  1057. to be free

  1058. in another kingdom.

1059. This was the very thing

  1060. that they were doing.

  1061. But Peter's

  1062. desire to build

  1063. for them

  1064. Tabernacles

  1065. was to celebrate that.

  1066. He's now seeing

  1067. Christ

  1068. exalted,

  1069. transfigured,

  1070. shining in glory.

  1071. And Moses

  1072. and Elijah are there

  1073. and he's saying

  1074. it's time.

  1075. It's time to go.

1076. It's time to get out

  1077. of this world

1078. and go to the next world.

1079. It's time for the kingdom

  1080. to come.

  1081. Can't you see

  1082. the misunderstanding

  1083. on this part?

  1084. It was not yet

  1085. the time.

  1086. Peter, James, and John

1087. wanted to exit the world.

  1088. They wanted to

  1089. be spared the suffering

1090. that Jesus had talked about.

  1091. They said,

  1092. we have the Christ,

  1093. we have Moses,

  1094. we have Elijah.

  1095. Let's get the glorious

  1096. kingdom started.

  1097. They wanted glory

  1098. without suffering.

  1099. They wanted exaltation

  1100. without humiliation.

  1101. They wanted Jesus

  1102. to be crowned king

  1103. without the cross.

  1104. This is not something

  1105. that could happen.

  1106. God's ordained plan

1107. go all the way back

1108. to the end of verse 33.

  1109. For you are not

  1110. setting your mind

1111. on the things of God

1112. but on the things of man.

  1113. The plan of God

  1114. was for Jesus

1115. to go to the cross.

1116. I'm glad he did it.

1117. I hope you are too.

1118. And as they say this,

  1119. a theologically informed

  1120. but wrong statement,

  1121. as they say this,

1122. a third witness shows up.

  1123. Elijah and Moses,

  1124. one and two witnesses.

1125. And now look who shows up.

  1126. A cloud overshadows them

1127. and a voice came out

  1128. of the cloud.

1129. This is my beloved son.

  1130. Listen to him.

  1131. The almighty shows up

  1132. and combines in chorus

1133. with Elijah and with Moses

  1134. to give account

1135. to the things that Jesus

  1136. has said.

1137. I love the record of it

  1138. in Matthew chapter 17

    Matthew 17:5

  1139. verses 5 and 6.

  1140. It says,

  1141. verse 5,

  1142. speaking of Peter,

  1143. he was still speaking.

  1144. So I love that

  1145. because Peter's still talking

  1146. and then God comes

  1147. and shuts him down.

  1148. He's interrupted

  1149. by the divine.

  1150. When, behold,

  1151. a bright cloud

  1152. overshadowed them.

1153. Again, you see the bright cloud

  1154. overshadowed them.

1155. Shows up in a light phenomenon.

1156. And a voice from the cloud said,

1157. this is my beloved son

1158. with whom I am well pleased.

  1159. Listen to him.

  1160. And I love verse 6.

1161. When the disciples heard this,

1162. they fell on their faces

  1163. and were terrified.

  1164. You better be

  1165. when you're interrupted

  1166. by the divine

  1167. and corrected.

1168. The very thing that happened.

1169. Jesus has spoken to you.

  1170. He has told you

1171. what will come to pass.

  1172. And now you're trying

  1173. to establish a kingdom

  1174. by another way?

1175. This is my beloved son.

  1176. Listen to him.

  1177. Right?

1178. He knows the way of God.

1179. Follow him in that way.

  1180. Even if it leads

  1181. to your own death.

  1182. Take up your cross.

  1183. Follow him.

  1184. And then suddenly,

  1185. verse 8,

  1186. suddenly,

  1187. looking around,

  1188. the whole scene vanished.

  1189. The kingdom preview,

  1190. this glimpse they got

1191. of the coming glory of God

  1192. was gone.

1193. And then plain old Jesus Christ

  1194. was standing before them

  1195. once again.

  1196. And he charged them

  1197. to tell no one

  1198. what they had seen,

  1199. verse 9,

1200. until the Son of Man

1201. had been risen from the dead.

1202. And here we see again

1203. they just don't seem to get it.

1204. So they kept the matter

  1205. to themselves.

1206. Until they recorded it later

1207. for all of us to read.

  1208. Questioning what this

  1209. rising from the dead

  1210. might mean.

1211. They just didn't get it.

  1212. The light is dawning

1213. in their hearts and minds.

1214. But it's yet to fully arrive.

1215. They're starting to get it.

  1216. And they certainly would

  1217. one day.

1218. We're going to see them

1219. come to a greater realization

  1220. of this.

1221. They would one day preach

  1222. Christ crucified and risen

  1223. in their messages.

  1224. Think of Peter's sermon

1225. on the day of Pentecost

1226. found in Acts chapter 2

    Acts 2:23

  1227. verse 23 and 24.

  1228. He says,

  1229. This Jesus

  1230. delivered up according

  1231. to the definite plan

  1232. and foreknowledge of God,

  1233. you crucified and killed

1234. by the hands of lawless men.

  1235. God raised him up,

1236. loosing the pangs of death

1237. because it was not possible

1238. for him to be held

  1239. by it.

  1240. Christ crucified

  1241. and risen.

  1242. John devotes all

  1243. of chapter 19

  1244. and the first half

  1245. of chapter 20

  1246. of his gospel account

  1247. to the death

  1248. and resurrection

  1249. of Christ.

  1250. Later stating in

  1251. chapter 20

  1252. verse 30 and 31,

  1253. Now Jesus did many

1254. other signs in the presence

  1255. of the disciples

  1256. which are not written

  1257. in this book,

  1258. but these are written

1259. so that you may believe

1260. that Jesus is the Christ,

  1261. the Son of God,

  1262. and that by believing

  1263. you may have

  1264. life in his name.

  1265. They preached Christ,

  1266. crucified and risen.

  1267. What happened to James?

1268. James was the first martyr.

1269. He was martyred in 44 AD.

1270. He was pierced with swords

  1271. for preaching Christ

  1272. crucifies and raised

  1273. by Herod.

  1274. These men would someday

  1275. come to fully understand

  1276. what the transfiguration

  1277. meant for them.

1278. But what does it mean for us?

1279. Three men privy to this vision.

1280. We didn't get to see it.

1281. We get a kind of

1282. a paltry record of it.

1283. Not a lot of detail

  1284. going on here.

1285. What does it mean for us?

  1286. And so three lessons

  1287. for today quickly

  1288. as we close.

  1289. Number one,

  1290. life is found

  1291. in the power

  1292. of the cross.

  1293. Life is found

  1294. in the power

  1295. of the cross.

  1296. Mark 8.35,

  1297. For whoever would save

1298. his life will lose it,

  1299. but whoever loses

1300. his life for my sake

  1301. and the gospels

  1302. will save it.

  1303. And this is following

  1304. him talking about

  1305. his death and resurrection.

1306. His death on the cross,

  1307. his resurrection

  1308. three days later.

  1309. This apparent paradox

1310. that we must follow him

  1311. in the same way

  1312. in order to gain

  1313. our lives.

  1314. 1 Corinthians 1.18-24,

  1315. Paul says,

1316. For the word of the cross

  1317. is folly

1318. to those who are perishing.

  1319. But to us

  1320. who are being saved,

1321. it is the power of God.

  1322. For it is written,

  1323. this is Isaiah 29.14,

  1324. I will destroy

1325. the wisdom of the wise

  1326. and the discernment

  1327. of the discerning

  1328. I will thwart.

  1329. Where is the one

  1330. who is wise?

  1331. Where is the scribe?

  1332. Where is the debater

  1333. of this age?

  1334. Has not God

  1335. made foolish

  1336. the wisdom

  1337. of the world?

  1338. For since

1339. in the wisdom of God

1340. the world did not know

  1341. God through wisdom,

  1342. it pleased God

  1343. through the folly

  1344. of what we preach

  1345. to save those

  1346. who believe.

  1347. The folly being

  1348. that a king came

  1349. to reign

  1350. by suffering

  1351. and dying.

  1352. Verse 22,

  1353. For Jews demand signs

  1354. and Greeks seek wisdom,

  1355. but we preach

  1356. Christ crucified,

  1357. a stumbling block

  1358. to Jews

  1359. and folly to Gentiles,

  1360. but to those

  1361. who are called

  1362. both Jews and Greeks,

  1363. Christ,

  1364. the power of God

  1365. and the wisdom

  1366. of God.

  1367. 1 Corinthians 2,

  1368. 1-2

  1369. Paul says,

  1370. And I,

1371. when I came to you,

  1372. brothers,

  1373. did not come

  1374. proclaiming to you

  1375. the testimony of God

  1376. with lofty speech

  1377. or wisdom,

  1378. for I decided

  1379. to do nothing

  1380. among you

  1381. except Jesus Christ

  1382. and Him crucified.

  1383. Life is found

  1384. in the power

  1385. of the cross.

  1386. Secondly,

1387. the power of the cross

  1388. is transmitted to us

  1389. by the Scriptures.

1390. The power of the cross

  1391. is transmitted to us

  1392. by the Scriptures.

  1393. Beloved,

  1394. do you realize

  1395. how precious

  1396. the book you hold

  1397. in your laps is?

  1398. This language

  1399. inspired by God

  1400. translated for us

  1401. into our English language,

  1402. the one in which

  1403. we have so many

  1404. copies of,

  1405. both physical

  1406. and digital,

  1407. that we have

  1408. so many resources.

  1409. We can search it

1410. and we can search it

1411. and we can know it.

  1412. There is unending

  1413. resources at our

  1414. fingertips

  1415. to know

  1416. the Word of God

  1417. to us.

  1418. It is the way

  1419. in which the power

  1420. of the cross

  1421. comes to us.

  1422. 2 Peter 1,

  1423. 16-21,

  1424. I read to you

  1425. the first three verses.

  1426. I'm going to read

  1427. those again

1428. and then read the rest

  1429. of what Peter

  1430. has to say.

  1431. This blows my mind.

1432. First time I read this,

  1433. I just,

1434. I wanted to fall down.

  1435. I didn't,

  1436. but I wanted to.

  1437. For we did not

  1438. follow cleverly

  1439. devised myths

  1440. when we made known

  1441. to you the power

  1442. and coming

1443. of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  1444. but we were

  1445. eyewitnesses

  1446. of His majesty.

  1447. Would you like to

  1448. have been in their

  1449. shoes,

  1450. been there on the

  1451. mountain?

  1452. For when He received

  1453. honor and glory

  1454. from God the Father

  1455. and the voice

  1456. was born to Him

  1457. by the majestic glory,

  1458. this is my beloved

  1459. Son with whom

  1460. I am well pleased,

  1461. we ourselves

  1462. heard this very

  1463. voice born from

  1464. heaven,

  1465. for we were with

  1466. Him on the

  1467. holy mountain.

  1468. Oh,

  1469. to have been there.

  1470. How great that

  1471. would have been.

  1472. But listen to what

  1473. Peter says to us.

  1474. Verse 19,

  1475. And we have

  1476. the prophetic

  1477. word

  1478. more fully

  1479. confirmed.

  1480. Catch that?

  1481. It's better

  1482. to have this.

  1483. It's more

  1484. fully confirmed.

  1485. We have seen

  1486. the promises

  1487. of God

  1488. carried out

  1489. from the

  1490. scriptures.

  1491. We have it.

  1492. It's more sure.

  1493. It's a thing

  1494. that we can trust.

  1495. It's greater

  1496. than being present

  1497. at the

  1498. transfiguration.

  1499. To which you

  1500. will do well

  1501. to pay attention

  1502. as to a lamp

  1503. shining in a

  1504. dark place

  1505. that we see

  1506. light again

  1507. until the day

  1508. dawns and the

  1509. morning star

  1510. rises in your

  1511. hearts.

  1512. Knowing this

  1513. first of all,

  1514. that no prophecy

  1515. of scripture

  1516. comes from

  1517. someone's own

  1518. interpretation,

  1519. for no prophecy

  1520. was ever produced

1521. by the will of man,

  1522. but men

  1523. spoke from God

  1524. as they were

  1525. carried along

  1526. by the Holy Spirit.

  1527. This book

  1528. is precious.

  1529. The power

  1530. of the cross

  1531. is transmitted

  1532. to us

  1533. by it.

  1534. Beloved,

  1535. we are a people

  1536. of words.

  1537. Words have

  1538. power.

  1539. Thirdly,

  1540. we are to be

  1541. transformed

  1542. by the power

  1543. of the cross.

  1544. We're not to

  1545. stay the same.

  1546. We're to be

  1547. transformed.

  1548. This is this

  1549. imagery he's

  1550. giving us.

  1551. If we would

  1552. follow him,

  1553. we have to

  1554. deny ourselves.

  1555. Stop being

  1556. you.

  1557. Pick up your

  1558. cross and

  1559. follow me.

  1560. Become me.

  1561. Look to me.

  1562. I'm your

  1563. example.

  1564. Paul writes,

  1565. Galatians 2.20,

  1566. I have been

  1567. crucified with

  1568. Christ.

  1569. It is no longer

  1570. I who live,

  1571. but Christ

  1572. who lives in me.

  1573. In the life

1574. I now live in the

  1575. flesh,

  1576. I live by faith

1577. in the Son of God

  1578. who loved me

  1579. and gave

  1580. himself for me.

  1581. We operate

  1582. from faith

  1583. to look like

  1584. Christ,

  1585. to pursue him

  1586. in all that we

  1587. are.

  1588. The derogatory

  1589. phrase given to

  1590. us,

  1591. Christian,

  1592. means little

  1593. Christ.

  1594. What a far

  1595. gap there is

  1596. between the way

  1597. we live and

  1598. the way Christ

  1599. lived.

  1600. Beloved,

  1601. pursue,

  1602. pursue the

  1603. example given

  1604. to us by him.

  1605. Hear me.

  1606. we hold the

  1607. sovereignty of

  1608. God so

  1609. precious here.

  1610. It's in our

  1611. closed fist.

  1612. Oh,

  1613. God is sovereign

  1614. over all things.

  1615. He ordains

  1616. all things.

  1617. He stands

  1618. over all

  1619. things.

  1620. But beloved,

  1621. grace is not

  1622. an enemy

  1623. of effort.

  1624. Grace fuels

  1625. our effort.

  1626. Grace is only

  1627. an enemy of

  1628. any merit

  1629. earned by

  1630. our effort.

  1631. We are to

  1632. work out

  1633. our salvation

  1634. with fear

  1635. and trembling

  1636. for it's God

  1637. who works

  1638. in us

  1639. to will

  1640. and to

  1641. work for

  1642. his good

  1643. pleasure.

  1644. Get busy

  1645. following

  1646. Christ.

  1647. You have

  1648. been given

  1649. the power

  1650. of the

  1651. cross

  1652. if you've

  1653. believed in

  1654. him.

  1655. This great

  1656. verse in

  1657. 2 Corinthians

  1658. 3.18

  1659. Paul says,

  1660. And we all

  1661. with unveiled

  1662. face,

  1663. beholding the

  1664. glory of the

  1665. Lord,

  1666. are being

  1667. transformed to

  1668. the same

  1669. image from

  1670. one degree

  1671. of glory

  1672. to another.

  1673. For this

  1674. comes from

  1675. the Lord

  1676. who is

  1677. the Spirit.

  1678. So what

  1679. do we

  1680. learn from

  1681. the

  1682. transfiguration,

  1683. from beholding

  1684. this?

  1685. Jesus is

  1686. the Christ

  1687. and we

  1688. must,

  1689. if he is,

  1690. if we believe

  1691. that he is,

  1692. we must

  1693. follow him.

  1694. We must

  1695. follow him

  1696. to the

  1697. point of

  1698. death as

  1699. all of

  1700. the

  1701. apostles

  1702. did,

  1703. all except

  1704. for John

  1705. who died

  1706. in exile

  1707. of old age.

  1708. They all

  1709. followed him

  1710. to the

  1711. point of

  1712. death.

  1713. Believe

  1714. the words,

  1715. follow him.

  1716. Life is

  1717. found in

  1718. the power

  1719. of the

  1720. cross.

  1721. The power

  1722. of the

  1723. cross is

  1724. transmitted to

  1725. us by the

  1726. scriptures and

  1727. we are to be

  1728. transformed by

  1729. the power

  1730. of the

  1731. cross.

  1732. Let's pray

  1733. together.

  1734. Amen.
