  1. Turn to the Gospel according to Mark chapter 9.

    Mark 9 chapter mention

  2. I will begin reading in verse 14.

  3. !

  4. And he answered them,

  5. Immediately it convulsed the boy, and he fell on the ground and rolled about, foaming at the mouth.

  6. And Jesus asked the father,

  7. How long has this been happening to him?

  8. And he said,

  9. From childhood.

  10. And it has often cast him into fire and into water to destroy him.

  11. But if you can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.

  12. And Jesus said to him,

  13. If you can, all things are possible for one who believes.

  14. Immediately the father of the child cried out and said,

  15. I believe.

  16. Help my unbelief.

  17. And when Jesus saw that a crowd came running together,

  18. he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it,

  19. You mute and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him and never enter him again.

  20. And after crying out and convulsing him terribly,

  21. it came out, and the boy was like a corpse,

  22. so that most of them said,

  23. He is dead.

  24. But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up,

  25. and he arose.

  26. And when he had entered the house,

  27. his disciples asked him privately,

  28. Why could we not cast it out?

  29. And he said to them,

  30. This kind cannot be driven out by anything but prayer.

  31. This is God's word to us.

  32. It was written for his glory and our good.

  33. We would all do well to listen to it,

  34. to believe its promises,

  35. and obey its commands.

  36. Let's pray together.

  37. Father God, we do praise you for this day,

  38. and the opportunity to come together with the congregation,

  39. those whom you have called your own,

  40. and to learn from your word.

  41. And I pray, Father,

  42. that will be the very thing that happens this day,

  43. that all of us will submit ourselves willfully to it,

  44. that we'll be taught by you, our great teacher,

  45. that you will expose the places of our heart,

  46. that we harbor deep sin,

  47. that we harbor faithlessness.

  48. And Father, we pray that you will help our unbelief.

  49. And we pray this in Christ's name.

  50. Amen.

  51. We have come a few stories into now the second act of sorts,

  52. kind of a three-act play that Mark writes for us.

  53. So far through the first half of chapter 8,

  54. we've gotten really his lengthy introduction

  55. in which he presents to us story after story after story,

  56. some teaching interspersed,

  57. but primarily stories to say that Jesus is in fact the Son of God.

  58. All of these punctuations of miracles that he performs.

  59. And we've noted he kind of seems to speed us along.

  60. There's a real hastening to the last half of chapter 8,

  61. and chapter 9, and chapter 10.

  62. And this is the second act,

  63. and it's when he begins his journey toward Jerusalem.

  64. We all know what's going to happen when he gets there.

  65. The disciples now have been with Jesus for about two years.

  66. There's about six more months coming,

  67. and he's come to a time in his ministry

  68. where he sets aside largely the public aspect of his ministry,

  69. and he turns his attention fully to the apostles.

  70. They have been with him all this time,

  71. but yet they have so many lessons to learn.

  72. They are getting it, but they don't quite get it.

  73. And so there's a number of lessons that are going to begin happening here.

  74. We first see a blind man healed at Bethsaida,

  75. which is on the western coast of the Sea of Galilee.

  76. Then they move to the area north of the Sea of Galilee,

  77. known as Caesarea Philippi,

  78. where Peter makes the bold proclamation that Jesus is the Christ.

  79. And then there's the immediate rebuke following that,

  80. as he does not understand how it is that Jesus intends

  81. to usher the kingdom of God into place.

  82. And the lesson taught here to the disciples

  83. is the cost of discipleship.

  84. We talked about that two weeks ago.

  85. Then Jesus leads a small band with him,

  86. Peter, James, and John,

  87. up onto a mountain, likely Mount Hermon,

  88. just north of Caesarea Philippi,

  89. and the transfiguration happens.

  90. Jesus comes in his glory.

  91. He gives them a visible manifestation

  92. of what the kingdom of God will look like.

  93. And we see Moses and we see Elijah in fellowship with him there.

  94. And the lesson he's teaching them there

  95. is the surety of the coming kingdom.

  96. This week we're going to see the necessity of faith.

  97. And then in the coming weeks,

  98. the excellence of service,

  99. the seriousness of sin,

  100. the nature of marriage,

  101. the childlikeness of faith,

  102. the difficulty of riches,

  103. and the prominence of humility.

  104. And all of this is capped off in Mark's Gospel

  105. with another blind healing,

  106. the healing of blind Bartimaeus.

  107. All that to say that Jesus himself

  108. is the Lord of spiritual blindness.

  109. It's metaphorical in that way.

  110. And he's bringing about this process of education

  111. with the disciples.

  112. And so we see this fascinating story.

  113. Mark is actually, in this case,

  114. the most lengthy telling of the story

  115. and gives us the most detailed.

  116. Thank you, Mark.

  117. You finally came out of your writing brevity

  118. and you've given us more detail to the story.

  119. And we'll talk a little bit about

  120. Matthew and Luke's account,

  121. some of the things that they add to this.

  122. But we get this very lengthy account.

  123. And for good reason,

  124. because Mark is saying to us,

  125. if you were going to be a disciple of Jesus Christ,

  126. it is going to require faith.

  127. It is necessary to be a disciple.

  128. And he does that so beautifully

  129. under the inspiration of the Spirit in this story.

  130. So notice with me, firstly, the scene.

  131. Verse 14 says,

  132. And when they came to the disciples,

  133. remember they have been up on the mountain.

  134. The they here, the pronoun,

  135. the help that we need with that

  136. is to see that this is Peter

  137. and James and John and Jesus.

  138. When they came back,

  139. when they rejoined this band of brothers,

  140. they saw a crowd around them of scribes.

  141. The scribes being the religious elite of the day,

  142. the mouthpieces, arguing with them.

  143. These scribes seem to follow Jesus around

  144. his entire ministry,

  145. hiding behind walls and bushes,

  146. just popping up all kinds of places

  147. at the most inopportune times.

  148. And here they've ambushed the disciples

  149. and they're having a debate with them.

  150. Likely, it's around an event we're going to look at,

  151. but likely on whether or not Jesus is the Christ

  152. and if they should be following him,

  153. if they should even be his disciples.

  154. And verse 15 says that we see a crowd

  155. and nothing amazing happened.

  156. Jesus didn't do anything amazing,

  157. but they knew who he was.

  158. And so they were amazed

  159. and they ran up and they greeted him.

  160. And he wants to know,

  161. he asks a simple question,

  162. what are you arguing about with them?

  163. Now notice they don't get a response.

  164. He doesn't get a response from the scribes.

  165. He doesn't get a response from the disciples,

  166. but rather he ends up getting a response

  167. from a man in the crowd.

  168. And so it's likely that as Jesus comes back

  169. as the great teacher,

  170. they're ashamed in his presence

  171. about the things they were arguing about.

  172. And here he has a great opportunity

  173. to set all of the argument straight.

  174. But Mark here,

  175. going from the telling of the transfiguration,

  176. and again under inspiration,

  177. but moving into this story

  178. of the healing of this boy,

  179. Mike's a stark juxtaposition

  180. between the mountaintop

  181. and the valley down below.

  182. The scene changes

  183. from unimaginable glory on a mountain

  184. to the den of a crowd in the valley.

  185. From the sweetest of fellowship

  186. to the senselessness of an argument.

  187. From the exaltation of the Son of God

  188. to the suffering of another only child.

  189. And Luke adds that detail for us.

  190. I believe that Mark here

  191. means to show us the stark contrast

  192. between the kingdom of God

  193. and this world.

  194. And the great issue at hand

  195. is the issue of faith.

  196. Notice Jesus' response.

  197. Skipping the man in the crowd,

  198. the father,

  199. as he tells Jesus what's going on for a moment.

  200. But verse 19,

  201. Jesus answers,

  202. finding out that the disciples

  203. are unable to heal the boy,

  204. unable to cast out the spirit.

  205. He answers them,

  206. O faithless generation.

  207. He's speaking to all those there,

  208. including the disciples

  209. who were really the object

  210. of this story.

  211. How long am I to be with you?

  212. How long am I to bear with you?

  213. Bring him to me.

  214. I think that this phrasing

  215. is very similar to the sigh we see

  216. in chapter 7, verse 34.

  217. As he just says,

  218. just get it.

  219. Just get it.

  220. You recall back in chapter 6,

  221. Jesus commissions the twelve apostles

  222. and sends them out two by two

  223. to minister the gospel of God.

  224. He's shown them how to do it

  225. as he's been ministering all these years

  226. and then he sends them out to do it.

  227. Mark 6.13 says,

  228. And they cast out many demons

  229. and anointed with oil

  230. many who were sick

  231. and healed them.

  232. Because,

  233. in verse 7 of chapter 6,

  234. we see the record

  235. that Jesus gave them authority

  236. over the unclean spirit.

  237. So they've been able

  238. to do this thing before,

  239. but now we find them

  240. in a position

  241. where they're unable to do it.

  242. Remember in Mark 4, verse 40,

    Mark 4:40

  243. after Jesus has calmed

  244. the storm of the Sea of Galilee,

  245. these great 10 to 15 foot waves

  246. on this little body of water,

  247. He's spoken

  248. and the waves,

  249. the wind has obeyed Him.

  250. He says to them,

  251. Why are you so afraid?

  252. Have you still no faith?

  253. After Jesus feeds the 5,000,

  254. then later He feeds the 4,000.

  255. The disciples are fretting

  256. because they only remembered

  257. to bring one loaf of bread with them

  258. on this boat journey

  259. back across the Sea of Galilee

  260. in one of the many crossings.

  261. And Jesus asks them,

  262. How many baskets full of broken pieces

  263. did you take up

  264. when I fed the 5,000?

  265. And they responded,

  266. 12.

  267. And He said,

  268. How many baskets full of broken pieces

  269. did you take up

  270. when I fed the 4,000?

  271. And they say,

  272. Seven.

  273. So 19 baskets of leftovers.

  274. And so He says to them,

  275. So I fed a multitude abundantly.

  276. And then Mark 8, 21,

  277. Do you not yet understand?

  278. Do you still not have faith?

  279. This section that we're in now,

  280. the last half of 8,

  281. chapter 9,

  282. chapter 10,

  283. before the journey to Jerusalem

  284. really sets off

  285. is punctuated by predictions

  286. of Jesus' coming,

  287. suffering,

  288. death,

  289. and resurrection.

  290. We see three passion predictions

  291. that are always followed

  292. by some faithless misunderstanding

  293. on the part of the disciples.

  294. They have yet to fully understand

  295. the power and provision

  296. in Jesus' presence.

  297. They're there with Him

  298. and they still don't get

  299. His power and provision.

  300. How is it possible

  301. that they would come

  302. to understand these things

  303. and experience these things

  304. when He's absent?

  305. This is what Jesus

  306. is setting them up for

  307. and this is what He's going

  308. to teach them

  309. in this story.

  310. How is it that they're

  311. to function when He's gone?

  312. And here we see

  313. the necessity of faith.

  314. So first, that's the scene.

  315. This is what's happening.

  316. Second, the son's situation.

  317. Verse 17 and 18.

  318. As he asks what they're arguing

  319. about, someone from the crowd

  320. answers him,

  321. Teacher, I brought my son to you

  322. for he has a spirit

  323. that makes him mute.

  324. And whenever it seizes him,

  325. it throws him down

  326. and he foams and grinds his teeth.

  327. That's foams at the mouth

  328. and he becomes rigid, tense.

  329. So I asked your disciples

  330. to cast it out

  331. and they were not able.

  332. So we see a boy.

  333. We don't know his exact age,

  334. although when asked

  335. how long this has been happening,

  336. he said from childhood,

  337. so he's potentially

  338. a little bit older boy

  339. who is demon-possessed.

  340. And this is the cause

  341. of all of these other symptoms

  342. that we see listed here.

  343. It's the demon possession

  344. that is causing these things.

  345. Now, as a bit of a side note,

  346. I do believe that this type of stuff

  347. still happens in our world today,

  348. although not in the prevalence

  349. that it happened in this day.

  350. It seems that in all of history,

  351. there was a great fervor

  352. to demonic activity

  353. in the days of Jesus.

  354. It's my presumption

  355. this was Satan's attempt

  356. to occupy the people,

  357. to destroy their

  358. God-image-bearing ability

  359. because the Son of God

  360. was on the scene.

  361. So it would be irresponsible

  362. to assume that anyone

  363. with similar symptoms

  364. also has a possession.

  365. This would be a bad hermeneutic.

  366. This would be a bad way

  367. to deal with the Scriptures.

  368. But this certainly is

  369. the cause of this boy's infirmities.

  370. The father says that he's mute,

  371. can't talk.

  372. Jesus later adds

  373. that he is deaf

  374. in verse 25.

  375. The father may not have even known

  376. that the boy couldn't hear

  377. what it is he was saying.

  378. This young boy was living

  379. in complete isolation.

  380. Right?

  381. Had the presence of people around him

  382. but couldn't hear a thing they would say.

  383. No comforting words

  384. could enter into his mind.

  385. And he couldn't express

  386. the anguish that he was in.

  387. In complete and total isolation.

  388. Verse 18.

  389. The father says that the demon

  390. that possesses him

  391. throws him down.

  392. If you have an NASB,

  393. the word used here is slams.

  394. The original Greek is a violent word.

  395. Right?

  396. Not tosses him to the ground

  397. but slams him to the ground.

  398. Luke adds in chapter 9,

  399. verse 39,

  400. and shatters him.

  401. Right?

  402. This is a violent,

  403. this is a pummeling.

  404. This boy is being beat

  405. against the ground

  406. again and again

  407. and again.

  408. Matthew 17, 15

  409. says that he has epilepsy.

  410. And this is a Greek word.

  411. The word we use,

  412. epilepsy,

  413. is a Greek word

  414. which means

  415. to seize,

  416. possess,

  417. or afflict.

  418. In fact,

  419. our common use,

  420. our western use

  421. of the word epilepsy

  422. just refers to a group

  423. of neurological disorders.

  424. It's not a particular one.

  425. It's a group

  426. of neurological disorders.

  427. The cause of which

  428. mostly are unknown

  429. although brain damage

  430. can often be the cause

  431. of epilepsy.

  432. And so it's likely,

  433. we don't know this for sure,

  434. but it's likely

  435. that this demon

  436. has been throwing this boy

  437. so violently

  438. against the ground

  439. that he has sustained

  440. head injury

  441. after head injury

  442. after head injury.

  443. And the other things

  444. that are happening

  445. to him

  446. are a result

  447. of the demon

  448. trying to kill him

  449. by throwing him

  450. into the ground.

  451. We know that the demon

  452. was trying to kill the boy.

  453. The father says

  454. that he's trying

  455. to destroy him.

  456. Verse 22,

  457. it's often cast him

  458. into fire

  459. and into water.

  460. The father believes

  461. that the demon

  462. is trying to destroy him.

  463. There would have been

  464. a lot of open fires

  465. in this day.

  466. They didn't go camping

  467. all the time.

  468. They just lived their lives

  469. and open wells.

  470. This father is

  471. following his son around.

  472. I would imagine

  473. at all moments

  474. and all time

  475. to save him

  476. from being burned alive

  477. or drowned

  478. by this demon.

  479. Now, demons

  480. are created beings.

  481. We don't have time

  482. to get into the theology.

  483. I don't have time

  484. to study it right now.

  485. But they're fallen angels.

  486. We know that

  487. they were created by God.

  488. And therefore,

  489. they fall under

  490. the reign of God.

  491. God permitted

  492. this boy

  493. to be possessed.

  494. He permitted it

  495. to happen.

  496. It's not the causation

  497. of it,

  498. but He permitted it

  499. to happen.

  500. And therefore,

  501. He also reigned

  502. over what was happening

  503. to this boy.

  504. And that's a hard thing

  505. to understand.

  506. I don't know why.

  507. I don't know why

  508. any of us deal

  509. with the things

  510. that we deal with

  511. and why this boy

  512. would have to go

  513. through such a terrible thing.

  514. His father as well,

  515. as a loving dad

  516. witnessing what's

  517. happening to this boy.

  518. We can certainly say

  519. that Jesus was exalted

  520. in this situation

  521. and that may be

  522. the greatest reason

  523. that this thing

  524. is happening

  525. to this boy

  526. and to this father.

  527. But what we can say

  528. for sure is that

  529. as God reigns over this,

  530. God did prevent

  531. the demon

  532. from taking the boy's life.

  533. The demon was doing

  534. everything it possibly could

  535. to take this boy's life.

  536. And God,

  537. by His grace,

  538. was preventing it

  539. from happening.

  540. Whether it be through

  541. simply sustaining

  542. the head injuries

  543. that would come to him

  544. or by his father

  545. scooping him up

  546. out of fire

  547. and out of open wells.

  548. This boy is in a

  549. horrible, horrible state.

  550. This is his only son.

  551. I have two sons.

  552. And I know a lot of you

  553. in the room

  554. don't have children,

  555. but when you have children

  556. and you start to see them

  557. get hurt,

  558. it is absolutely

  559. heartbreaking.

  560. When Cade was finally

  561. able to form tears,

  562. babies can't form tears

  563. really early

  564. if you don't know that.

  565. When he could form tears

  566. and the first time

  567. he got hurt

  568. and he cried,

  569. I cried too.

  570. It was so heartbreaking

  571. to me

  572. that he got hurt.

  573. Gosh,

  574. you want to rescue them

  575. from every pain

  576. in this world.

  577. In fact,

  578. I think Sam

  579. had to take Cade

  580. to the bathroom

  581. when we were singing.

  582. When they came back in,

  583. when they got to the corner,

  584. Cade was holding Judas' hand.

  585. I think he thought

  586. it would be funny

  587. to sling him

  588. around the corner.

  589. And my heart like,

  590. because I was looking at,

  591. thinking Judas' head

  592. was going to get slammed

  593. into the wall

  594. the way this boy

  595. was slammed repeatedly

  596. into the ground,

  597. but this by his brother

  598. rather than a possession

  599. of sorts.

  600. But what I'm trying

  601. to point out to you

  602. is that this boy

  603. is suffering,

  604. but the father

  605. is suffering as well.

  606. The father is suffering

  607. as well.

  608. I am sure that many times

  609. in the life of this father

  610. and this son,

  611. this father has desired

  612. to trade places

  613. with his son.

  614. Please,

  615. let me take the beating.

  616. Spare him.

  617. And Jesus says to him,

  618. verse 19,

  619. bring him to me.

  620. He has immediate compassion.

  621. They're arguing over here.

  622. What are you arguing about?

  623. The father tells them

  624. what they're arguing about

  625. and he says,

  626. bring him to me.

  627. In verse 20,

  628. it says,

  629. and they brought the boy

  630. to him.

  631. And when the spirit saw him,

  632. this is the unclean spirit,

  633. the demon inside the boy,

  634. immediately it convulsed the boy

  635. and he fell on the ground

  636. and rolled about,

  637. foaming at the mouth.

  638. And we see here

  639. a picture of darkness

  640. colliding with light.

  641. The demon sees Jesus

  642. and it knows

  643. what's going to happen.

  644. And it tries to get in

  645. its last punch.

  646. It tries to get in

  647. its last damage

  648. to this child.

  649. Such a picture

  650. of evil incarnate.

  651. This great collision.

  652. Verse 21,

  653. and Jesus asked his father,

  654. how long has this

  655. been happening to him?

  656. And he said,

  657. from childhood.

  658. And then we see

  659. the explanation

  660. of the fire

  661. and the water.

  662. We shouldn't miss

  663. at this point

  664. this question

  665. that Jesus asked the father.

  666. How long has this

  667. been happening

  668. to him?

  669. Jesus doesn't need

  670. to know

  671. as if he's got to work out

  672. the equation

  673. of his power.

  674. Let me dial my power

  675. meter up properly

  676. so that I can

  677. put the right amount

  678. of power

  679. into the situation.

  680. Jesus,

  681. we could argue,

  682. is omniscient.

  683. He already knows.

  684. How long

  685. it's been happening

  686. to him?

  687. But what he does

  688. in this great display

  689. of compassion

  690. is he empathizes

  691. with the father's

  692. suffering.

  693. We've heard about

  694. the son's suffering,

  695. but as I pointed out,

  696. the father has suffered.

  697. And he asks him a question.

  698. How long

  699. has this been happening

  700. to him?

  701. How long?

  702. Let me share

  703. in this story with you

  704. before I do

  705. this mighty,

  706. mighty work.

  707. And then the father

  708. makes this request

  709. at the end of verse 22.

  710. This is the father's request.

  711. But if you can do anything,

  712. have compassion on us

  713. and help us.

  714. And you see here

  715. that the father understands

  716. that Jesus is empathizing

  717. with him.

  718. The Greek word for help

  719. is a much,

  720. much mightier word

  721. in the original language.

  722. Boatheo.

  723. It means to run

  724. to our aid.

  725. Help us with urgency.

  726. We need your help.

  727. That's what he's saying.

  728. Right?

  729. And he includes

  730. that plural pronoun

  731. of compassion on us

  732. and help us,

  733. deliver us

  734. from the torment

  735. of this demon.

  736. Fourth,

  737. notice the response

  738. of Jesus.

  739. And Jesus says to him,

  740. if you can,

  741. all things are possible

  742. for one who believes.

  743. He says to him,

  744. I can and I will

  745. if only you will believe

  746. that I can.

  747. The father's response

  748. is the opposite

  749. of the leper's request

  750. in chapter 1,

  751. verse 40 of Mark.

  752. You remember that?

  753. He said,

  754. if you will,

  755. you can make me clean.

  756. The leper says,

  757. I know you can,

  758. but I just don't know

  759. if you want to.

  760. The father here says,

  761. I think you will,

  762. but I don't know

  763. if you can.

  764. And then Jesus follows

  765. with this axiom statement,

  766. this hinging statement,

  767. all things are possible

  768. for one who believes.

  769. The power of God

  770. is accessed, beloved,

  771. by our faith,

  772. by our belief

  773. in his power,

  774. that he has the ability

  775. to do the things

  776. that he said

  777. he's going to do.

  778. This is what he means

  779. by all things.

  780. He means all things

  781. within the will

  782. of the father.

  783. All those things

  784. that are ordained

  785. by God himself.

  786. I think the word all

  787. quite possibly

  788. may be one of the greatest

  789. misunderstood words

  790. of scripture

  791. for modern evangelicals.

  792. If we take this

  793. at its face value

  794. and say all things

  795. are possible

  796. for one who believes,

  797. every Christian

  798. can do anything

  799. they want to do.

  800. Isn't that fantastic?

  801. What a poor,

  802. poor hermeneutic.

  803. What does he mean?

  804. All things.

  805. He means all things

  806. in the will of the father.

  807. John 14.14 is similar.

  808. If you ask me

  809. anything in my name,

  810. Jesus says,

  811. I will do it.

  812. What does anything include?

  813. Things in his name.

  814. Things that exalt him.

  815. Things that are within

  816. the will of the father.

  817. All things are possible

  818. for the one who believes.

  819. For the one who has faith.

  820. Notice fifth,

  821. the sufficient faith

  822. of the father.

  823. The sufficient faith

  824. of the father.

  825. Immediately the father

  826. of the child cried out,

  827. verse 24,

  828. I believe,

  829. help my unbelief.

  830. And I love this statement.

  831. I love it.

  832. I have just meditated

  833. for hours this week

  834. on this statement.

  835. I believe,

  836. help my unbelief.

  837. It's such a beautifully

  838. humble statement.

  839. And doesn't it so readily

  840. sum up the experience

  841. of our lives?

  842. It does mine.

  843. I think it does yours as well.

  844. I'm always working

  845. to get my heart

  846. to catch up to my head.

  847. I know things,

  848. but I just don't believe them.

  849. I'm in constant ebb

  850. and flow in my faith.

  851. For many years,

  852. I ran Appalachian Outfitters

  853. in town here.

  854. On the Chesity River,

  855. there's a bend in the river.

  856. And on the inside bank,

  857. which is how rivers function,

  858. there's a beach.

  859. And we called it

  860. Big Bend Beach.

  861. I'm sure it's still called that

  862. this day.

  863. And that beach changed

  864. all the time.

  865. Every time there's a little change

  866. in the water fluctuation,

  867. the water level,

  868. more sand would be deposited

  869. or some sand would be carried away.

  870. But there was always a beach there.

  871. The beach always existed.

  872. We always would send people down there

  873. and let them camp on it.

  874. We never wondered

  875. if the beach was going to exist or not.

  876. It always existed,

  877. but it changed.

  878. Many of you are going to go

  879. to the beach this summer.

  880. I'm not.

  881. Praise God I'm not going

  882. to the beach this summer.

  883. Many of you will.

  884. Watch the sand as it comes

  885. and it goes.

  886. There's always sand on the beach.

  887. There's always faith,

  888. but it ebbs and flows.

  889. It waxes and it wanes.

  890. And this is the statement

  891. that he says,

  892. I believe.

  893. Help my unbelief.

  894. Praise God

  895. that he does not require

  896. of us perfect faith.

  897. But rather he requires

  898. of us humble faith,

  899. which is sufficient faith.

  900. I believe.

  901. Help my unbelief.

  902. And we know that his faith

  903. is sufficient

  904. because Jesus responds to it.

  905. The Father has said,

  906. if you can do this,

  907. if you can do it,

  908. and Jesus' response to him is,

  909. if you can,

  910. all things are possible.

  911. The very thing you're requesting

  912. of me is possible

  913. for the one who believes.

  914. The Father responds,

  915. I believe.

  916. Help my unbelief.

  917. And the evidence

  918. that he actually believed,

  919. that he has faith,

  920. is that Jesus heals his son.

  921. Verse 25.

  922. There's a crowd running together.

  923. So it would seem

  924. that the fact that Jesus is there

  925. is gathering a larger crowd.

  926. And so he quickly rebukes.

  927. His public ministry

  928. has largely completed.

  929. Remember?

  930. Like, he's got to get in these days.

  931. He doesn't want to be taken captive,

  932. to be put in charge,

  933. to be a military ruler.

  934. This was the thing

  935. he's trying to avoid

  936. as he's functioning in secrecy.

  937. So he quickly rebukes

  938. the unclean spirit,

  939. says to it,

  940. you mutant deaf spirit,

  941. I command you,

  942. come out of him

  943. and never enter him again.

  944. This boy is delivered

  945. and he's delivered forever

  946. from the power of this demon.

  947. And after crying out

  948. and convulsing him terribly,

  949. it came out again,

  950. giving him one last go,

  951. it came out

  952. and the boy was like a corpse

  953. so that most of them said,

  954. he is dead.

  955. Mark records for us

  956. the faithlessness still

  957. of the crowd.

  958. See that little detail

  959. he includes for us.

  960. Most of them said,

  961. he is dead,

  962. but Jesus took him by the hand

  963. and lifted him up

  964. and he arose.

  965. In verse 27,

  966. he lifted him up.

  967. And this is what Jesus does.

  968. He takes those who are sin sick

  969. and makes them whole again.

  970. He takes those who were dead

  971. and he makes them alive.

  972. And as I reflected on this phrase this week,

  973. he lifted him up.

  974. My mind was taken to Ephesians 2.

  975. So please go there with me.

  976. Amen.

  977. The metaphor of this boy's life,

  978. this real event that happened,

  979. it points to something greater

  980. that has happened in your life

  981. if you have placed your faith in Christ.

  982. Oh, and I pray that you have.

  983. Ephesians chapter 2,

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  984. And you were dead

  985. in the trespasses and sins

  986. and once you once walked.

  987. You were dead.

  988. Walking, but dead.

  989. Following the course of this world.

  990. Doing all the things that this world does.

  991. You just go along with the flow.

  992. Following the prince of the power of the air.

  993. You were dead.

  994. You were a worshiper of Satan.

  995. The spirit that is now at work

  996. in the sons of disobedience.

  997. Not that we're demon-possessed

  998. prior to Jesus delivering us.

  999. We're not demon-possessed.

1000. But yet there's a work that's happening in us.

  1001. By our nature,

1002. we are enemies of God.

  1003. Verse 3,

1004. among whom we all once lived

1005. in the passions of our flesh,

1006. carrying out the desires of the body

  1007. and of the mind,

  1008. and we're by nature,

  1009. there's that word,

  1010. children of wrath

1011. like the rest of mankind.

  1012. Precious conjunction.

  1013. But God,

  1014. being rich in mercy

1015. because of the great love

1016. with which He loved us,

1017. even when we were dead

  1018. in our trespasses,

1019. made us alive together with Christ.

1020. By grace you have been saved.

1021. He's lifted you up in Christ

1022. and raised us up with Him

1023. and seated us with Him

1024. in the heavenly place in Christ Jesus

1025. so that in the coming ages

1026. He might show the immeasurable riches

1027. of His grace and kindness

1028. toward us in Christ Jesus.

1029. I read past where I wanted to,

  1030. but it's so good.

  1031. And then verse 8,

1032. for by grace you have been saved

  1033. through faith.

1034. Faith has been given to us

1035. as a gift of God.

1036. This boy couldn't deliver himself

  1037. from the demon,

  1038. but Jesus delivered him.

  1039. Praise God

  1040. for the sufficient faith

  1041. of the Father.

  1042. Sixth,

1043. look at the disciples' doubt.

  1044. Verse 28,

1045. And when He had entered the house,

  1046. presumably a house

1047. that they were staying at

  1048. in the area,

1049. His disciples asked Him privately,

1050. Why could we not cast it out?

1051. And He said to them,

1052. This kind cannot be driven out

  1053. by anything but prayer.

1054. Now it would be really,

1055. really dangerous at this point

1056. to try to form some sort of

1057. doctrine about types of demons,

  1058. species of demons.

  1059. The lesson here ultimately

  1060. in this story

  1061. is not even about

  1062. casting out demons.

1063. It's the lesson of faith

  1064. and the power

1065. and how do we access the power

1066. to do the work of God,

  1067. more generally speaking.

1068. So it would be wrong

1069. to look at that and go,

  1070. What does He mean,

  1071. this kind?

1072. What does He mean by that?

  1073. He's simply saying

  1074. an enemy of God.

  1075. An enemy of God,

  1076. the demon-possessed person,

  1077. can't be exercised

  1078. by anything but prayer.

1079. So the question I asked earlier,

  1080. how would the disciples

  1081. access the power,

  1082. presence,

  1083. and provision

  1084. of Jesus Christ

  1085. in His absence?

  1086. They would,

  1087. as we should,

  1088. access it by prayers

  1089. of faith.

1090. Prayer is the natural response

1091. of the person of faith.

1092. We believe in the God

1093. who says He will do things

1094. and therefore we ask Him

1095. to do those very things.

  1096. How do we know

1097. that I'm right about this?

  1098. How do we know

  1099. that Jesus isn't trying

1100. to set up a doctrine

  1101. of species of demon?

  1102. Right?

  1103. Matthew,

  1104. His explanation

  1105. is more explicit.

  1106. Matthew 17, 20.

  1107. He said to them

1108. in response to their question,

1109. why could we not cast it out?

  1110. He says to them,

1111. because of your little faith.

1112. For truly I say to you,

  1113. if you have faith

1114. like a grain of mustard seed,

1115. you will say to this mountain,

1116. move from here to there

  1117. and it will move

1118. and nothing will be impossible

  1119. for you.

  1120. Now again,

1121. Jesus is not teaching them

  1122. literally,

1123. you guys are going to start

  1124. an excavating company

1125. because you're going to have faith

1126. and it's going to be amazing

1127. because you're going to need

  1128. no equipment.

1129. You're just going to go out there

  1130. and talk

1131. and things are going to get

  1132. moved around.

1133. This isn't what He's saying to them.

1134. He's saying if you even just have

  1135. a little faith.

1136. The problem in this situation,

1137. the reason that they couldn't

  1138. cast out the demon

1139. is because they had no faith.

1140. They had no faith at all.

  1141. They thought that they

  1142. could exercise demons

1143. and they didn't go to the source

  1144. of the power.

1145. They didn't believe that Jesus

  1146. is the Christ

1147. and Jesus is the source

  1148. for the ability

  1149. to do such things.

  1150. They had zero faith.

  1151. He says to them,

  1152. if you have faith

1153. like a grain of mustard seed

1154. and mustard was the smallest

  1155. seed in this region.

  1156. Maybe ever.

  1157. I don't know.

  1158. But very small.

  1159. They would have gotten

1160. what He meant by this.

1161. And if you've ever seen

  1162. a mustard seed,

  1163. it's like a little flake.

1164. It's really easy to like

  1165. breathe too hard

1166. and it blows off your hand

1167. and you never find it again.

  1168. Tiny.

1169. You just have a little,

  1170. right?

1171. It doesn't have to be

  1172. perfect faith.

1173. It just has to be

  1174. sufficient faith.

  1175. Humble faith.

  1176. Know that the power

  1177. doesn't come from you

1178. but it comes from me.

  1179. This is the further

  1180. juxtaposition

  1181. of the Father's faith

  1182. and the disciples' doubt.

  1183. He believed

  1184. and the disciples

  1185. did not.

  1186. Habakkuk 2.4

1187. God says by the prophet,

  1188. the righteous shall live

  1189. by his faith.

  1190. Paul cites Habakkuk 2.4

  1191. in Romans 1.17

  1192. and Galatians 3.11.

  1193. Again, the righteous

  1194. shall live by faith.

  1195. The author of Hebrews

  1196. does it as well

  1197. in 10.38

  1198. but my righteous one

  1199. shall live by faith.

  1200. It is by faith

  1201. that we have

  1202. our very being,

  1203. our access into

  1204. the kingdom of God

1205. and it is by faith

  1206. we continue

  1207. in this life.

  1208. So the application.

1209. What areas of your life

1210. do you lack faith in?

1211. What areas of your life

  1212. do you have like

  1213. no faith?

  1214. You have no faith

  1215. if you're not responding

  1216. properly to the gospel.

1217. You don't have to have

  1218. perfect faith.

1219. You just have to have

  1220. sufficient faith.

  1221. Faith like a mustard

  1222. seed.

  1223. Another way to ask

  1224. the question would be

1225. in what ways have you

  1226. failed to trust God?

  1227. Do you trust Him

  1228. with your very soul?

  1229. Do you trust Him

  1230. with your very soul?

  1231. Have you placed

  1232. believing faith

  1233. in Jesus Christ?

  1234. John 3.18 says,

  1235. whoever believes in Him

  1236. is not condemned.

1237. But whoever does not believe

  1238. is condemned already

1239. because he has not believed

1240. in the name of the only

  1241. Son of God.

  1242. Whoever believes

  1243. is delivered

  1244. from the consequence

  1245. of his sin.

1246. But the one who doesn't

  1247. has already been condemned.

  1248. Do you trust Him

  1249. in all the circumstances

  1250. of your life?

  1251. Romans 8.28,

1252. I hope this is not a promise

1253. that grows old to you.

  1254. And we know that

1255. for those who love God,

  1256. all things,

  1257. all things work together

  1258. for good for those

  1259. who are called

  1260. according to His purpose.

  1261. Do you trust Him

1262. in all of the circumstances

  1263. of your life?

  1264. Matthew 28.20,

  1265. behold,

  1266. Jesus says,

1267. I am with you always

1268. to the end of the age.

  1269. Do you trust Him

  1270. with your children,

1271. with your wife or husband,

1272. or future wife or husband?

  1273. Do you trust Him

  1274. with your finances?

  1275. Matthew 6.25-33,

  1276. Jesus tells us

  1277. not to be anxious

  1278. about our life,

1279. what we're going to wear,

1280. what we're going to eat,

  1281. all these things.

  1282. It's ridiculous

  1283. to be worried

  1284. about these things.

  1285. For the Gentiles

  1286. seek after these things,

  1287. verse 32,

  1288. and your heavenly Father

1289. knows that you need them all.

  1290. But seek first

  1291. the kingdom of God

  1292. and His righteousness

  1293. and all these things

1294. will be added to you.

  1295. Do you trust Him

  1296. in your finances?

  1297. Do you trust Him

  1298. with your plans?

  1299. College students,

  1300. the transition of life

  1301. right now,

  1302. do you trust Him

  1303. with your plans?

  1304. Proverbs 19.21,

1305. this is many of the plans

1306. in the mind of a man.

  1307. You all can relate

  1308. to that, can't you?

  1309. Many are the plans

1310. in the minds of a man,

1311. but it is the purpose

  1312. of the Lord

  1313. that will stand.

  1314. To give some explanation

  1315. to that,

  1316. James 4.13-15,

1317. Come now you who say,

  1318. today or tomorrow

1319. we will go into such and such town

1320. and spend a year there

1321. and trade and make a profit.

1322. Yet you do not know

  1323. what tomorrow will bring.

  1324. What is your life?

1325. For you are a mist

1326. that appears for a little time

  1327. and then vanishes.

1328. Instead you ought to say

  1329. if the Lord wills,

  1330. we will live

1331. and do this or that.

  1332. If God directs,

  1333. I will go.

  1334. You can rest

  1335. and trust,

  1336. have faith

  1337. in a plan

  1338. for your life.

  1339. The disciples

  1340. of Jesus Christ,

  1341. this is what Mark

1342. is driving us to be.

1343. This is the very point

  1344. of this.

  1345. Believe that Jesus

  1346. is the Christ

  1347. and follow Him.

  1348. The disciples

  1349. of Jesus Christ

  1350. will be so

  1351. by faith.

1352. Let us cry out together

  1353. to God,

  1354. I believe.

  1355. Help my unbelief.

  1356. Let's pray.

  1357. Let us pray.
