  1. We have been continuing our verse-by-verse journey together through the Gospel according to Mark.

  2. ! We have come to chapter 10.

  3. And Jesus has, about halfway through chapter 8, summed up his Galilean ministry, which was largely his public ministry.

  4. There are certainly some other public things he does as we continue through the Gospel account.

  5. But in large part, he's ceased this public ministry, and he's now narrowed his scope to the teaching of the disciples.

  6. We see that in chapter 9, verse 30 and 31.

  7. He passes through Galilee. He did not want anyone to know, for he was teaching his disciples.

  8. He has about six months left now before his death.

  9. He is summing up his earthly ministry, and he wants to be sure that the disciples understand the things they're going to need to know before he leaves them.

  10. And we've seen in this sort of second act a number of lessons taught, beginning with a blind man healed at Bethsaida in varying degrees,

  11. to show us that Jesus is in fact the Lord, both over physical blindness, but more importantly, as we see these samplings, these paracopes, these different stories,

  12. that he's also the Lord over spiritual blindness.

  13. This section is summed up at the end of chapter 10 with the healing of blind Bartimaeus in an instant.

  14. And so we see that Jesus reigns over these things, and he's teaching the disciples all of these various lessons.

  15. We come now to a very short paracope, one that seems a bit insignificant and could be easily read past,

  16. but let's be sure that we don't do that this morning.

  17. Mark chapter 10, beginning in verse 13.

    Mark 10 chapter mention

  18. And they were bringing children to him that he might touch them, and the disciples rebuked them.

  19. But when Jesus saw it, he was indignant and said to them,

  20. Let the children come to me. Do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God.

  21. Truly I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it.

  22. And he took them in his arms and blessed them, laying his hands on them.

  23. This is God's word to us. It was written for his glory and for our good.

  24. We would all do well this morning to listen to it in order to believe its promises and obey its commands.

  25. Let's pray together.

  26. Father God, we do thank you for your word to us this morning.

  27. Father, I admit, and I admit on behalf of this congregation that we are not sufficient for such things.

  28. That we can, in no way, under our own power, understand your word rightly.

  29. And so, Father, I would ask that your spirit would be active in me to preach it well.

  30. To speak with clarity and with conviction.

  31. And that we would all hear it.

  32. That it would saturate our hearts and it would change us for your glory.

  33. And we pray this in Christ's name. Amen.

  34. Now, as I mentioned, it's kind of an easy little four verses to read right past.

  35. To maybe make some improper assumptions about and move on.

  36. The next story is the rich young man, which I'm massively looking forward to getting to preach through.

  37. But this little story is contained in all three of the synoptic gospels.

  38. Matthew, Mark, and Luke.

  39. Much with the same detail.

  40. And they all three contain the phrase,

  41. To such belongs the kingdom of God.

  42. We need to wrestle with this.

  43. We need to really understand what it means.

  44. These three gospel writers, under inspiration,

  45. thought it was important to include this teaching in the scriptures.

  46. In fact, we ought to pay attention any time Jesus talks about the kingdom of God.

  47. Mark 1, verse 15.

    Mark 1:15

  48. This was the message he was bringing.

  49. He said the time is fulfilled and the kingdom of God is at hand.

  50. Repent and believe in the gospel.

  51. What is this kingdom of God?

  52. And how is it that we get to be a part of the kingdom of God?

  53. And once we are a part of the kingdom of God,

  54. how do we operate properly underneath the rule of the king?

  55. This is the great question,

  56. the thing that ought to captivate all human minds.

  57. How do we live in subject, proper subjection to the king?

  58. And here we see a story that teaches us that what it looks like to be part of the kingdom of God

  59. is to have faith like a child.

  60. God, to have faith like a child.

  61. Now let's understand some of the aspects of this.

  62. This would be called the exegesis.

  63. What does it mean as we're reading through this story?

  64. What are some of the details involved here?

  65. And we see at the very beginning that there are people, it says,

  66. and they, a larger crowd, it's safe to assume that they were children.

  67. I would hope that these are not people who have kidnapped children

  68. and for the sake of the children and bring them to Jesus,

  69. but they are their parents.

  70. So that he could do what?

  71. That he would touch them.

  72. That he would touch them.

  73. And this was the way that Jesus' ministry was largely being carried out.

  74. All of the healings that he was doing, he was doing by touch.

  75. He wanted to be sure that people knew that the power to heal was coming from him,

  76. that he was Lord over this.

  77. And so it made sense that they were bringing them to him to touch them.

  78. And we see a sharp rebuke.

  79. The disciples rebuked him, this incredibly strong verb here,

  80. which means in the noun form to punish them.

  81. They reprimanded them when they came.

  82. Now in Luke's account, Luke 18, 15, it says,

  83. now they were bringing even infants to him.

  84. Luke uses a different Greek noun here.

  85. And so they were very small children, likely even infants.

  86. In the verse 16, we see the summation.

  87. He gives us a teaching, but in the summation of this,

  88. he then rebukes the disciples and then he takes them in his arms

  89. and he blesses them, laying his hands on them.

  90. Now what the parents were asking of him was something that was consistent in this culture.

  91. It was a tradition of the elders that when somebody had a new child,

  92. fathers would come to the elders and they would lay their hands on the child

  93. and the elders would join in laying their hands on the child

  94. and they would pray for them.

  95. Similar in a lot of ways to the way we do dedications

  96. when a family would like to do that in our church.

  97. We come together and we collectively pray for the child.

  98. They would pray specifically for three things.

  99. They pray that they would be famous in law.

  100. They would know it well and expound upon it well.

  101. That they would be faithful in marriage.

  102. And that they would do good works.

  103. These were the things that were asked of a Jewish child

  104. to be responsible by their understanding to their God.

  105. They also, in asking these things, were asking for salvation for the child.

  106. The Jewish people had an understanding

  107. that to be saved, they had to walk in the ways of God.

  108. They had to be saved from the condemnation of the law.

  109. The unfortunate thing is that it was misguided.

  110. It was just simply misguided

  111. because they thought it was works that brought them to that point

  112. and not their faith.

  113. They were asking, as they came to Jesus,

  114. that Jesus would bless them,

  115. that He would lay His hands on them

  116. and set them on the right path

  117. that they might merit their salvation by works.

  118. Now, maybe this is why the disciples rebuked them,

  119. although I think Jesus' response gives us a clue

  120. that this is not the reason why.

  121. This sharp reprimand that they give to them.

  122. Likely, Jesus' sharp response back to them

  123. is that they've already forgotten the lesson we observed

  124. from chapter 9

  125. concerning the excellence of service.

  126. Turn back to verse 33.

  127. And they came to Capernaum.

  128. They're traveling back through Galilee.

  129. They came to Capernaum.

  130. And when He was in the house, He asked them,

  131. what were you discussing on the way?

  132. But they kept silent.

  133. They were ashamed.

  134. For on the way, they had argued with one another

  135. about who was the greatest.

  136. Which of us is going to be best in the kingdom of God?

  137. And He sat down and called the twelve

  138. and He said to them,

  139. if anyone would be first,

  140. he must be last of all

  141. and servant of all.

  142. And then in verse 36, what does He do?

  143. He brings a child into the situation.

  144. He brings a child into the situation.

  145. He says,

  146. whoever receives,

  147. verse 37,

  148. one such child in My name receives Me.

  149. Whoever receives what would have been perceived

  150. as the lowest human subject.

  151. Children have very little,

  152. no worth in society in this day.

  153. If anyone would be first,

  154. he must be last of all

  155. and servant of all.

  156. And here we see now a group of parents

  157. who want to bring children

  158. to the midst of Jesus

  159. and the disciples have already forgotten

  160. this important lesson.

  161. And so Jesus is indignant with them.

  162. Angry would be a synonymous word here.

  163. He was angry with them.

  164. And then says to them,

  165. let the children come to Me.

  166. Do not hinder them,

  167. for to such belongs the kingdom of God.

  168. To such belongs the kingdom of God.

  169. And then He goes beyond.

  170. He goes a little further in verse 15.

  171. He says,

  172. truly I say to you,

  173. whoever does not receive the kingdom of God

  174. like a child shall not enter it.

  175. I want to show you four things

  176. from the text this morning.

  177. First, I want to show you two things

  178. that the text does not mean.

  179. Those common things

  180. that we might misunderstand about it

  181. and would cause us to read right past us.

  182. Two things that this text does not mean.

  183. And then secondly,

  184. two things that this text does mean.

  185. So firstly,

  186. it does not build a case

  187. for some sort of special salvific category

  188. for children

  189. or for the baptizing of infants.

  190. It's not some special category

  191. that we see here.

  192. Jesus says,

  193. verse 14,

  194. not that the kingdom of God

  195. belongs to these children

  196. or these children belong

  197. to the kingdom of God,

  198. but that to such belongs

  199. the kingdom of God.

  200. To people like this

  201. belongs the people,

  202. the kingdom of God.

  203. He reinforces that in verse 15.

  204. Right?

  205. Not saying that there's a special

  206. salvific category.

  207. In fact,

  208. the Bible speaks very little

  209. to what happens to children,

  210. young children,

  211. babies in the womb.

  212. What happens to these children's souls

  213. when they die?

  214. They haven't been able to receive

  215. and respond to the gospel.

  216. What happens to them?

  217. What happens to mentally handicapped

  218. children and adults

  219. who don't seem to be able

  220. to comprehend

  221. or to understand the gospel?

  222. The Bible doesn't speak

  223. explicitly to it.

  224. I do believe

  225. that a case can be made

  226. implicitly

  227. that children

  228. and mentally handicapped people

  229. have an eternal dwelling with God.

  230. I do believe that.

  231. For another day

  232. and another time.

  233. But I cannot

  234. in good conscience

  235. make this text

  236. mean that.

  237. Again,

  238. the reinforcement.

  239. Whoever does not receive

  240. the kingdom of God

  241. like a child

  242. shall not enter it.

  243. This is not some

  244. special salvific category

  245. he's talking about.

  246. He's talking about

  247. those who will be part

  248. of the kingdom

  249. and what characterizes

  250. their faith.

  251. What their faith

  252. must look like

  253. to be included.

  254. in that kingdom.

  255. It follows then

  256. that this also

  257. is not a case

  258. for infant baptism.

  259. Interestingly,

  260. on Friday,

  261. in fact,

  262. I picked up a commentary

  263. by J.C. Ryle

  264. who's a 19th century

  265. Anglican bishop.

  266. On this text,

  267. he says,

  268. I respect J.C. Ryle

  269. so you're clear.

  270. Of course,

  271. it is not pretended

  272. that there is any

  273. mention of baptism

  274. or even any reference

  275. to it in the verses

  276. before us.

  277. All we,

  278. meaning Anglicans

  279. who practice

  280. infant baptism,

  281. all we mean to say

  282. is that the expressions

  283. and gestures

  284. of our Lord

  285. in this passage

  286. are a strong

  287. indirect argument

  288. in favor

  289. of infant baptism.

  290. It is on this account

  291. that the passage

  292. occupies a prominent

  293. place

  294. in the baptismal

  295. service

  296. of the Church

  297. of England.

  298. This text

  299. from Mark

    Mark 10 chapter mention

  300. chapter 10,

  301. 13 through 16

  302. has a prominent place

  303. in the baptism service

  304. of the Church

  305. of England

  306. and I discovered

  307. in many other

  308. denominations

  309. that celebrate

  310. infant baptism.

  311. It is certainly

  312. not taught here.

  313. By J.C. Ryle's

  314. own admission,

  315. it's not taught here.

  316. And,

  317. for that matter,

  318. anywhere else

  319. in the pages

  320. of Scripture.

  321. It is a troubling

  322. thing to me

  323. that so many

  324. people who we love

  325. and respect,

  326. people who we love

  327. to partner with

  328. in advancing

  329. the Gospel,

  330. who we agree with

  331. on so many

  332. finer points

  333. of Gospel truth,

  334. embrace

  335. the false doctrine

  336. of infant baptism.

  337. It's not taught

  338. anywhere

  339. in the Scriptures.

  340. I read to you

  341. before this

  342. wonderful quote

  343. from A.T. Pearson's

  344. biography of George Mueller.

  345. I think it would be

  346. well read again here.

  347. George Mueller,

  348. 19th century

  349. pastor,

  350. operated children's home

  351. as well as

  352. a missionary society.

  353. If you hang around

  354. here long,

  355. you'll know he's

  356. one of my spiritual heroes.

  357. While at Sidmouth

  358. preaching in April,

  359. 1830,

  360. three believing sisters

  361. held in his presence

  362. a conversation

  363. about believer's

  364. baptism,

  365. which proved

  366. the suggestion

  367. of another important

  368. step in his life

  369. which has a wider

  370. bearing than at first

  371. as a parent.

  372. They naturally

  373. asked his opinion

  374. on the subject

  375. about which they

  376. were talking,

  377. and he replied that,

  378. having been baptized

  379. as a child,

  380. he saw no need

  381. of being baptized

  382. again.

  383. Being further asked

  384. if he had ever yet

  385. prayerfully searched

  386. the Word of God

  387. as to its testimony

  388. in this matter,

  389. he frankly confessed

  390. that he had not.

  391. Now catch here,

  392. he's the guest speaker,

  393. right?

  394. He's the visiting pastor

  395. come to speak,

  396. and these three women

  397. asked this question

  398. of him.

  399. At once,

  400. with unmistakable

  401. plainness of speech

  402. and with rare fidelity,

  403. one of these sisters

  404. in Christ promptly said,

  405. I entreat you then

  406. never again to speak

  407. any more about it

  408. till you have done so.

  409. We would do well

  410. to take a lesson

  411. from this rather embarrassing

  412. moment in Mueller's life,

  413. and A.T. Pearson

  414. goes on to say

  415. that Mueller

  416. not willing to back down

  417. such a challenge did.

  418. He read the Bible

  419. cover to cover

  420. with the topic

  421. of infant

  422. and what we would call

  423. credo-baptism

  424. in mind

  425. and was promptly

  426. on his completion

  427. of that study

  428. baptized as a believer.

  429. Now there is so much

  430. to be said

  431. on this topic,

  432. and I know that I've made

  433. some incredibly strong

  434. statements that

  435. potentially have offended

  436. some of you.

  437. In fact,

  438. I set out this week

  439. to talk a lot about this

  440. because it would seem

  441. that the text

  442. is so grossly misused

  443. that that needs

  444. to be set straight.

  445. However,

  446. in my work on that,

  447. I realized that I was

  448. going to neglect

  449. what the text

  450. actually does mean,

  451. and that would be

  452. a shame as well.

  453. So we're going to leave

  454. it at that

  455. this Sunday.

  456. But next Sunday,

  457. I'm going to expound

  458. upon this.

  459. Right?

  460. Part two of this text.

  461. We're going to step away

  462. from it,

  463. and we're going to look

  464. more holistically

  465. at the Scriptures

  466. at what they have

  467. to teach about

  468. infant baptism

  469. or paedo-baptism

  470. versus credo-baptism.

  471. Beloved,

  472. this is something

  473. we should set straight

  474. in our minds.

  475. It's important

  476. to what we believe.

  477. So it doesn't mean that.

  478. It's not some special

  479. salvific category.

  480. It's certainly not a case

  481. for infant baptism.

  482. It also

  483. does not mean

  484. that we are to have

  485. ignorant,

  486. uninformed,

  487. blind faith.

  488. This is sometimes

  489. the way people teach this

  490. or understand it,

  491. that to have faith

  492. like a child

  493. is this simple,

  494. naive type of faith.

  495. Many people use it

  496. to make an excuse

  497. for their lack

  498. of knowledge.

  499. Right?

  500. Well, I just think

  501. it's enough to have faith

  502. like a child.

  503. There's a great

  504. jars of clay song

  505. that I no longer like

  506. after studying this

  507. as a result of this.

  508. Now, recall

  509. in 1 Corinthians 14,

  510. Paul exhorts Christians

  511. not to be like children

  512. in our thinking.

  513. And we so quickly

  514. want to divorce

  515. our heads

  516. from our hearts.

  517. It's enough that

  518. I feel a certain way.

  519. It's not.

  520. It's not.

  521. God calls all of us

  522. into the worship of Him.

  523. Our head and our heart

  524. and in fact,

  525. our head is a conduit

  526. for our heart.

  527. The way you think

  528. affects the way you feel

  529. and therefore act.

  530. 1 Corinthians 14,

  531. 20,

  532. Brothers,

  533. do not be children

  534. in your thinking.

  535. Be infants in evil,

  536. innocent in that way,

  537. but in your thinking

  538. be mature.

  539. He exhorts us

  540. in 1 Thessalonians 5,

  541. 21,

  542. to test everything

  543. so that,

  544. in order that,

  545. we can hold fast

  546. to what is good.

  547. 2 Corinthians 1,

  548. 20 states

  549. that all the promises

  550. of God

  551. find their yes

  552. in Jesus Christ.

  553. You must know

  554. these promises

  555. in order to live

  556. by them.

  557. That's the thing

  558. I've been saying

  559. week after week now,

  560. and I intend to say it

  561. every single Sunday,

  562. why the Word of God

  563. was written.

  564. God's glory

  565. and our good.

  566. We would do well

  567. to listen to it,

  568. to believe its promises,

  569. and obey its commands.

  570. We are meant

  571. to be a thinking people,

  572. a people of the book.

  573. C.S. Lewis famously said

  574. in Mere Christianity,

  575. it needs no special education

  576. to be a Christian.

  577. Christianity is an education

  578. itself.

  579. This is not a call

  580. to high-minded Christianity

  581. that has no action at all.

  582. Head and heart.

  583. The two must be combined

  584. together.

  585. We must delve in.

  586. We must know.

  587. Have you ever heard

  588. somebody say,

  589. oh, I don't really like

  590. being theological.

  591. Well, then you don't like God.

  592. If you love God,

  593. you want to know God.

  594. The great evidence

  595. of the love for my wife

  596. is that I want to know

  597. who she is.

  598. I want to know

  599. what she experiences.

  600. I want to know

  601. what hurts her,

  602. what makes her happy.

  603. I want to spend time

  604. with her.

  605. The same is true

  606. of our God,

  607. that we want to know Him

  608. because we love Him.

  609. We delve deep.

  610. This isn't a naive,

  611. a blind type of faith

  612. that God is calling us to.

  613. Now remember,

  614. God doesn't require

  615. of us perfect faith,

  616. but rather sufficient faith.

  617. So I'm not suggesting

  618. that you have to know everything

  619. and learn everything

  620. and you have to be

  621. so deep and theological

  622. and be able to expound

  623. upon anything

  624. that God might accept you.

  625. That is not what I'm saying

  626. right now.

  627. He requires of us

  628. sufficient faith.

  629. Remember the story

  630. back in chapter 9,

  631. verses 14 through 29,

  632. when Jesus heals

  633. the demon-possessed boy?

  634. It's in response

  635. to the faith

  636. of the Father.

  637. Remember verse 24,

  638. He says,

  639. I believe.

  640. Help.

  641. My unbelief.

  642. This expression

  643. of imperfect faith.

  644. I think you can do it.

  645. I'm pretty sure

  646. you can do it.

  647. Please help me believe

  648. is the response of faith

  649. of this Father.

  650. This is the type of faith

  651. God requires of us.

  652. A sufficient faith.

  653. But then we are

  654. to go deep.

  655. To know God.

  656. I appreciated

  657. what Stan had to read

  658. this morning.

  659. It was not planned

  660. on our part.

  661. This is the most important thing

  662. about who we are.

  663. What we think

  664. and therefore how we act

  665. concerning God.

  666. So read.

  667. Beloved, we have a book.

  668. We have a book.

  669. A book that's been given to us

  670. that we might know our God.

  671. What a phenomenal,

  672. phenomenal thing.

  673. Right?

  674. Written by men

  675. under the inspiration

  676. of the Spirit,

  677. the words of God

  678. to us.

  679. The Almighty

  680. condescended

  681. to become an author.

  682. We should read that book.

  683. That's an important,

  684. important book.

  685. Now here's some fun stats

  686. for you.

  687. I love statistics.

  688. In another life,

  689. I should be a statistician.

  690. The average person reads

  691. 250 to 300 words per minute.

  692. Okay?

  693. Average.

  694. You guys are all above average.

  695. I'm sure of that.

  696. The average person reads

  697. 250 to 300 words per minute.

  698. The average page of my Bible,

  699. not necessarily yours,

  700. but the average page

  701. of my Bible

  702. contains 750 words.

  703. Right?

  704. My copy has just over

  705. 1,000 pages.

  706. 1,042 pages

  707. to be exact.

  708. Okay?

  709. Now catch this.

  710. If you read for 30 minutes

  711. per day,

  712. and I'm talking about

  713. sitting down,

  714. distraction-free,

  715. actually reading.

  716. Right?

  717. If you read for 30 minutes

  718. per day,

  719. five days a week,

  720. just five,

  721. I'm going to give you

  722. two off in my example,

  723. for the entire year,

  724. you could read

  725. the entire Bible

  726. two and a half times

  727. per year.

  728. 30 minutes a day.

  729. Five days a week.

  730. Two and a half hours

  731. a week.

  732. Two and a half hours

  733. a week.

  734. You could read

  735. the entire scriptures

  736. through two and a half times.

  737. That's apart from

  738. meditation on it.

  739. I'm not suggesting

  740. that everybody needs

  741. to read the Bible

  742. two and a half times

  743. a year.

  744. Please don't hear me

  745. saying that.

  746. Right?

  747. Soak in it.

  748. Spend a day on a verse.

  749. That's okay.

  750. Spend a day on a word

  751. in the scriptures.

  752. It'll affect your life.

  753. But just to give you

  754. an idea of the capacity

  755. that we have

  756. as a people,

  757. how about this?

  758. Same example.

  759. If you read

  760. for 30 minutes a day,

  761. five days a week,

  762. for the 52 weeks

  763. of the year,

  764. the average book

  765. contains 300 pages,

  766. which means you can

  767. read 26 books

  768. in a year.

  769. 26 books

  770. in a year.

  771. Right?

  772. Now catch this.

  773. The average college student,

  774. and again,

  775. you guys are all

  776. above average.

  777. I am sure this is

  778. not true of you,

  779. but the average college

  780. student spends

  781. 106 minutes per day

  782. on social media.

  783. 106 minutes per day

  784. on social media.

  785. Now,

  786. social media itself

  787. is not evil.

  788. I'm not suggesting

  789. that at all.

  790. However,

  791. if you devoted

  792. five days a week,

  793. 52 weeks out of the year,

  794. that 106 minutes

  795. instead to reading,

  796. you could read

  797. 92 books.

  798. Average books

  799. in a year.

  800. 92 books

  801. in a year.

  802. Or,

  803. and I would encourage

  804. the Bible

  805. 8.8 times.

  806. That's a worthy trade.

  807. It's a worthy trade.

  808. Set aside Facebook

  809. and Twitter

  810. and Instagram.

  811. I don't know what else

  812. is happening out there

  813. these days.

  814. And read.

  815. Get to know

  816. our God

  817. through the wealth

  818. of knowledge

  819. that is out there

  820. concerning Him.

  821. In 1 Corinthians,

  822. as Paul is exhorting

  823. the Corinthians,

  824. as they're putting

  825. themselves under

  826. the leadership,

  827. I belong to Paul,

  828. I belong to Apollos,

  829. he flips that around

  830. on them to say

  831. that Paul and Apollos

  832. belong to you.

  833. Right?

  834. That they are in service

  835. to you because we are

  836. Christ and Christ

  837. is God's.

  838. Right?

  839. Which means

  840. that all the saints,

  841. all the people

  842. in the present

  843. and in the past

  844. belong to us

  845. for our benefit

  846. because we belong

  847. to Christ

  848. and Christ belongs

  849. to God.

  850. As do they

  851. to our service,

  852. to our sanctification,

  853. to our holiness.

  854. holiness.

  855. Which means

  856. we should access

  857. these things

  858. that I know of.

  859. No one in this church

  860. writes deep theological books.

  861. Please let me know

  862. if you do.

  863. I don't think

  864. that's the case

  865. but men throughout history

  866. have written

  867. wonderful reads.

  868. You can sit down

  869. at dinner

  870. with some of these

  871. phenomenal men

  872. and hear their mind

  873. on a particular topic

  874. concerning God.

  875. I started out

  876. making a huge list

  877. of people you should read.

  878. It would have been

  879. a waste of time.

  880. Ask me some time.

  881. Let me just give you

  882. the Johns.

  883. It's sort of

  884. really like recognizing

  885. there are a ton

  886. of phenomenal theologians

  887. that are named John.

  888. Ready?

  889. The Johns.

  890. Read the Johns.

  891. Piper, MacArthur,

  892. Edwards,

  893. that was Jonathan,

  894. but Edwards,

  895. Wesley, Murray,

  896. Flavel, Calvin,

  897. Owen, Bunyan,

  898. Knox, or Gill.

  899. And there's probably

  900. some more.

  901. Read the Johns.

  902. I've set it as a goal

  903. for myself,

  904. and I know that

  905. I've got a little more time,

  906. which I love and appreciate,

  907. and I thank you all

  908. for supporting me

  909. so that I can do

  910. these types of things.

  911. As a goal for myself,

  912. in addition to the other

  913. reading that I do,

  914. to my scripture reading,

  915. in addition to that,

  916. I'm going to try to read

  917. 50 books this year

  918. starting this Sunday.

  919. I'll be making a stack.

  920. There's 50,

  921. and I'm going to try

  922. to go process through them.

  923. Because we can do this.

  924. Average.

  925. Average.

  926. If you're 25% of average,

  927. 25% of average,

  928. you could easily

  929. read through the scriptures

  930. in a year.

  931. You could easily

  932. read five or more books.

  933. Right?

  934. The call here is not

  935. to an ignorant faith.

  936. Right?

  937. Uninformed.

  938. Blind.

  939. I exhort you to the opposite.

  940. You will not be disappointed.

  941. You will not be disappointed.

  942. All right.

  943. Two things that this text

  944. does mean.

  945. Two things that it doesn't mean.

  946. Two things that it does mean.

  947. It does mean that Jesus

  948. gave special attention

  949. to children.

  950. And so should we.

  951. Verse 16.

  952. He takes them in his arms

  953. and he blesses them

  954. laying his hands on them.

  955. The Greek here

  956. just paints for us

  957. such a beautifully tender moment.

  958. Jesus embraces the children.

  959. The Greek word means

  960. he enfolds his arms

  961. around them.

  962. He scoops them up

  963. and it would seem

  964. in a group

  965. he does it with them.

  966. All these little babies

  967. and these little children.

  968. He scoops them up.

  969. Jesus loved children.

  970. We should do the same.

  971. Do we?

  972. Do we love kids?

  973. Our society doesn't really

  974. seem to love kids.

  975. Our society seems to think

  976. of children more as a burden

  977. than a blessing.

  978. It kills me.

  979. It absolutely just

  980. just wrenches my heart.

  981. When I go someplace

  982. with somebody who owns a dog

  983. and we've got our kids with us

  984. and you like go to the park

  985. and people come up to you

  986. and they want to pay attention

  987. to the dog

  988. and they don't give any attention

  989. to the kids at all.

  990. People in our society

  991. love animals.

  992. Right?

  993. Soulless beings.

  994. Sorry to disrupt

  995. your thinking at all.

  996. Right?

  997. Non-eternal beings.

  998. There's no dogs in heaven.

  999. I'm sorry.

  1000. Right?

  1001. Right?

  1002. More than my kids.

  1003. How dare you?

  1004. My kids are precious

  1005. and eternal.

  1006. We should love.

  1007. And dogs are fine.

  1008. I'm okay with dogs.

  1009. But we should love.

  1010. Love children.

  1011. Listen to what God

1012. has to say about children.

  1013. Psalm 127.

  1014. Behold,

  1015. children are heard

  1016. from the Lord

1017. the fruit of the womb

  1018. a reward.

  1019. Not a burden.

  1020. A reward.

  1021. A blessing.

  1022. A gift.

1023. Like arrows in the hand

  1024. of a warrior

  1025. are the children

  1026. of one's youth.

  1027. Blessed.

  1028. Happy.

1029. Joyful is what that means.

1030. Is the man who fills

  1031. his quiver with them.

1032. Some of us in this church

  1033. have fuller quivers

  1034. than others.

  1035. But kids are

  1036. a blessing.

  1037. They're hard.

  1038. Right?

  1039. They're sinful.

  1040. They're a challenge.

  1041. Expose our sinfulness.

  1042. I am selfish

  1043. at my core

  1044. and my kids often

  1045. show me

  1046. how really

  1047. evident that is

  1048. in my activity.

  1049. with them.

  1050. They're a blessing.

  1051. They're precious.

  1052. We ought to be

  1053. about children.

  1054. We should love them

1055. and because we love them

  1056. we should minister

  1057. the gospel to them.

  1058. Psalm 78

    Psalms 78:1–4

  1059. verse 1-4

1060. Give ear, O my people,

  1061. to my teaching.

  1062. Incline your ears

1063. to the words of my mouth.

1064. I will open my mouth

  1065. in a parable.

1066. I will utter dark sayings

  1067. from of old.

1068. Things that we have heard

  1069. and known

  1070. that our fathers

  1071. have told us.

1072. We will not hide them

  1073. from children

1074. but tell to the coming

  1075. generations

  1076. the glorious deeds

  1077. of the Lord

  1078. and His might

  1079. and the wonders

  1080. that He has done.

  1081. We as a society

  1082. spend so much time

  1083. entertaining

  1084. with the fantastical

  1085. our kids

  1086. and we don't often

  1087. give to them

  1088. the very best

  1089. possible thing

1090. we can give to them.

  1091. The most amazing,

  1092. the most miraculous story

1093. that we can ever tell them.

1094. God and His redemptive work

  1095. in this world.

  1096. It is a phenomenal,

  1097. phenomenal story

  1098. that has eternal consequence,

  1099. that has the power,

  1100. the ability

  1101. to captivate their hearts

1102. and change who they are

  1103. with eternal purpose.

1104. We need to teach our kids.

1105. We need to pour into our kids.

  1106. Why?

  1107. I mean, I really wasn't prepared

  1108. for this morning

  1109. but I read

1110. Our House is Like a Little Church

  1111. for that reason.

1112. This is the best thing

1113. we can do for our kids,

  1114. parents.

  1115. Feed them,

  1116. clothe them,

  1117. these things matter

1118. but they don't primarily matter.

1119. What happens to their souls

  1120. is what matters most.

  1121. Have you ever considered

  1122. that we can fix

  1123. the problems

  1124. in the church

  1125. in just one generation?

1126. Have you ever thought about that?

1127. Let me just use for an example

  1128. the way that Christians

  1129. these days

1130. tend to be so consumeristic.

1131. They have such a poor view

  1132. of what church is.

1133. They just want to show up,

  1134. consume the show,

  1135. entertain me,

1136. give me a little life lesson,

  1137. let me go home.

1138. They don't want to show up to serve.

1139. They don't want to be transparent.

1140. They don't want to get to know.

1141. They don't want to be part

  1142. of a faith family.

1143. They just want to go

  1144. to a big conference

  1145. every Sunday.

  1146. This is a disease

  1147. in our churches.

  1148. The me, me, me

  1149. kind of mentality.

1150. If we come to realize this,

  1151. fight against it,

  1152. push out our culture

  1153. and what our culture

1154. has to say about that

  1155. and begin to embrace

1156. the truth of what church

  1157. really is

  1158. and how it is

1159. we're meant to live together

  1160. in the faith,

  1161. we've got to battle

  1162. with the wrong understanding.

  1163. We've got to battle

  1164. with our history

  1165. and our upbringings,

  1166. but our kids don't.

  1167. We could teach them

1168. what it really looks like

  1169. to be in fellowship

  1170. in a church

  1171. and in a generation

  1172. it could change.

  1173. Isn't that a phenomenal idea?

  1174. All the things

  1175. that lament us

  1176. about the way

  1177. that Christians live

  1178. in this world

  1179. could be changed

  1180. in a generation.

1181. We should be about that work.

  1182. Jesus loved children,

  1183. do we.

  1184. We let the kids

1185. sit in the service with us

  1186. and I know

1187. that that's not always easy.

  1188. Some Sundays

  1189. better than others.

1190. I'll tell you right now

1191. that we have a group

  1192. of phenomenal kids.

  1193. There's not a lot of kids

1194. that can handle and do

  1195. what happens

  1196. in our service together.

  1197. It serves the parents

1198. to get to have their kids

  1199. with them.

  1200. It serves the children

  1201. to get to sit

  1202. and listen,

  1203. pay attention,

  1204. see that this matters

  1205. to their parents.

  1206. But those of you

  1207. without kids,

  1208. it serves you too.

  1209. It really does.

  1210. To not think

1211. that you have to have

  1212. a perfect vacuum

  1213. of silence

1214. to be able to pay attention,

1215. to learn to pay attention

  1216. regardless,

  1217. and it teaches you

  1218. to love children.

  1219. Do you love kids

  1220. even when they're

  1221. a little bit disruptive?

  1222. And let's be clear,

  1223. it's always a little bit disruptive.

  1224. It's never a lot disruptive

  1225. in here.

  1226. A little bit disruptive.

1227. Do you love the children?

  1228. Went to a graduation

  1229. yesterday at North Georgia

  1230. to see Daniel Swanson

  1231. and Ash Harris

  1232. who were both here

  1233. this morning with us

1234. as well as Cody Klinker.

  1235. Klink?

  1236. Is it Klinker?

  1237. Okay.

  1238. Sorry.

  1239. Sorry, Cody,

1240. if you hear this recording.

  1241. I don't know your last name.

  1242. I love you though.

  1243. Graduate.

  1244. And, you know,

  1245. and it's silent-ish

  1246. in the gymnasium

  1247. if you've been to

  1248. the graduations there

1249. and they're calling the names

  1250. and there's these kids

  1251. crying out

  1252. and you know

1253. it's just the most miserable

1254. place they could possibly be

1255. and parents trying to hush them

1256. and deal with that kind of a thing

1257. and it was not a distraction

  1258. to me at all.

  1259. Praise God

1260. that we do this here.

  1261. It didn't bother me a bit.

  1262. In fact,

1263. I wanted to go hang out

  1264. with the kids.

1265. Ah, that kid just needs

1266. somebody to have fun with them.

  1267. Let's go do it.

1268. Was the cry of my heart

  1269. in that setting.

1270. Plus, it was really long

  1271. and boring.

1272. it would have been better.

  1273. Right?

  1274. So, it's good.

  1275. It's good.

  1276. I think it's good for everybody.

1277. I think it's good for all of us.

1278. Not that it's the only way

1279. that church can be done.

1280. I would not argue that.

  1281. I wouldn't draw that kind of

1282. a line in the sand

  1283. but I do think

  1284. it's the best way

  1285. for us.

1286. If you don't have kids,

  1287. what can you do?

1288. You can help us love our kids.

  1289. Right?

1290. You could use your help.

  1291. You can babysit.

  1292. Healthy parents are good.

  1293. When they're good together,

  1294. they're good for kids

1295. and we need time away

  1296. from our kids sometimes

  1297. to be good together.

  1298. Offer your services

  1299. and that whether you're

  1300. a young person

  1301. or an older person.

1302. Your kids are out of the house.

  1303. Spend some time

  1304. with the kids.

  1305. It'll help you appreciate

1306. not having kids in the house.

  1307. Spend time with some

  1308. of the older kids

1309. in our church as well.

  1310. Young people,

  1311. college students.

  1312. We've got upcoming

  1313. young people

  1314. who would love

1315. to spend time with you.

  1316. The young adults.

  1317. Right?

  1318. I'm losing cool.

  1319. I'm trying.

1320. I'm really working at it.

  1321. You guys are cool

1322. and you can spend time with them

1323. and you can point them to God.

1324. You can reinforce the things

1325. that their parents are doing

  1326. at home with them.

  1327. Right?

  1328. Keep the distractions down

  1329. in the service

1330. the way that you can love kids

  1331. and love parents.

  1332. Show the children

1333. how they're supposed to act

  1334. in the service.

  1335. That could be helpful.

  1336. Talk to each other.

  1337. Pass notes.

  1338. Draw.

  1339. Right?

  1340. Sit.

  1341. Pay attention.

1342. Be an example for them.

  1343. Right?

1344. You've got to go to the bathroom.

  1345. Go to the bathroom.

  1346. Please don't suffer.

1347. But if you don't have to go,

  1348. don't go.

  1349. Stay.

  1350. Stick around.

1351. I do it every Sunday.

1352. I think you can too.

  1353. Right?

1354. What we do in the service together

  1355. is important.

  1356. It matters.

  1357. It matters.

  1358. It matters to Jesus.

1359. He enfolded his arms around them.

  1360. Right?

  1361. Secondly,

  1362. what it does mean.

  1363. Right?

1364. And here's the primary point

  1365. of the text.

1366. It took us a while to get to it.

1367. But here is the primary point.

  1368. Right?

1369. If you don't hear anything else

  1370. I said,

1371. if you don't take anything else

  1372. away from this,

1373. this is the primary point

  1374. of the text.

1375. That we must come to the kingdom

  1376. with humility.

  1377. Right?

  1378. What does childlike faith

  1379. look like?

  1380. Right?

1381. It means that we come to the kingdom

  1382. with nothing to offer.

1383. We recognize that we have

  1384. nothing of ourselves

  1385. to offer

  1386. to the kingdom.

  1387. Again,

  1388. remember all the misconception

1389. about what the kingdom even meant.

  1390. They thought that Jesus,

  1391. that the Christ,

  1392. was going to come

1393. and he was going to reign

  1394. militarily.

1395. I think that the disciples

1396. are still getting this understanding

  1397. out of their heads.

1398. Jesus is continually giving them

  1399. passion predictions

  1400. and they keep misunderstanding

1401. what that's going to mean.

1402. We're going to see that again

1403. in a couple of weeks.

1404. About halfway through chapter 10.

  1405. Again,

  1406. he foretells his death.

  1407. Again,

  1408. they don't get it.

  1409. It's common misconception.

  1410. What does a child

  1411. have to offer

1412. to the army of God

  1413. who's going to come

  1414. and set them free

  1415. from Roman rule?

  1416. Nothing.

  1417. Nothing.

1418. Luke says that they're infants.

1419. Whether or not they're infants,

  1420. they're little

1421. and the parents are the ones

1422. that bring them to Jesus.

  1423. They didn't come under

  1424. their own volition.

1425. They were brought to him

1426. that he might pray for them,

1427. that he might bless them.

  1428. This is the way

1429. we come to the kingdom

  1430. as well,

  1431. with humility.

  1432. Knowing that we have

  1433. nothing to offer.

  1434. Knowing that we're insignificant.

1435. That our sin has totally wrecked

  1436. our image-bearing capacity.

  1437. Destroyed it.

  1438. We come to Christ

  1439. by grace alone,

  1440. through faith alone.

  1441. no merit

  1442. of our own.

  1443. Ephesians 2,

  1444. 8 and 9.

  1445. For by grace

  1446. you have been saved.

  1447. Through faith.

1448. And this is not your own doing.

1449. It is the gift of God.

1450. Not a result of works

  1451. so that no one

  1452. may boast.

  1453. We cannot be proud

1454. of what we have done.

1455. We do not trust ourselves

  1456. for salvation.

  1457. Oh,

1458. if that was the call

  1459. of the gospel,

  1460. I would be lost

  1461. again

  1462. and again

  1463. and again.

  1464. We rather trust

  1465. in Him,

  1466. in Jesus Christ.

  1467. We recognize

  1468. that there's no thing

  1469. or massive things,

  1470. massive pile of things

1471. that we could possibly do

1472. to merit our own salvation.

  1473. We see that

  1474. Jesus' perfection,

  1475. His holiness,

  1476. His righteousness

  1477. can be ours

  1478. through faith.

  1479. We simply believe

1480. that that is the case.

  1481. this gift

  1482. of faith

1483. that is given to us.

  1484. This is what Jesus

  1485. is communicating

  1486. in this text.

1487. This is what He means

  1488. when He says,

  1489. whoever does not receive

  1490. the kingdom of God

  1491. like a child,

  1492. a little one,

  1493. an insignificant one,

  1494. one who has nothing

  1495. to offer

  1496. shall not

  1497. enter it.

  1498. Children,

  1499. perk your ears.

  1500. I wholeheartedly

  1501. agree

  1502. with the words

  1503. of Jesus loves me.

  1504. Jesus loves me.

  1505. This I know.

  1506. For the Bible

  1507. tells me so.

  1508. Little ones

  1509. to Him belong.

  1510. They are weak.

1511. The point of this text.

  1512. But He

  1513. is strong.

  1514. Let's pray together.
