  1. Let's take your copy of God's Word.

  2. Turn to the Gospel according to Mark, chapter 10.

    Mark 10 chapter mention

  3. For those of you who haven't seen us all summer, yes, we are still continuing our verse-by-verse

  4. ! exposition of the Gospel according to Mark, and we have made it to chapter 10. We have seen

  5. the conclusion of Jesus' Galilean ministry and His public ministry at large, and He's

  6. begun to travel kind of halfway through chapter 8 with the disciples towards Jerusalem, and

  7. His attention has turned towards them. There's lots of Pericopes here that are specifically

  8. poignant and challenging to those of us who claim to be in Christ. And last week we came

  9. to Mark 10, verses 13 through 16. Let's pray together first, and then I'll read that to

    Mark 10:13–16

  10. you. Father God, I have no good that is mine apart from you. In the preaching of your Word,

  11. there is no wisdom that's been given to me that wasn't given to me by you. There's no degree

  12. of slickness of presentation that could possibly change anyone's heart apart from your work in their

  13. lives. And so I plead with you today. Help me. Empower me to speak with clarity and with conviction.

  14. And help, Father, all of us to believe and to follow Christ as we should. And it's in His name I pray.

  15. Amen. So Mark chapter 10, beginning in verse 13. And they were bringing children to Him that He might

    Mark 10 chapter mention

  16. touch them. And the disciples rebuked them. But when Jesus saw it, He was indignant and said to them,

  17. Let the children come to Me. Do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God. Truly I say to

  18. you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it. And He took them in His arms

  19. and blessed them, laying His hands on them. And last week we spent some time talking about what it is

  20. that this text does mean. And we see that we are meant to have a childlike faith. And we came to

  21. understand together that this is not an ignorant faith, but that this is a faith that recognizes we

  22. have nothing to offer the kingdom of God. That we have nothing to add to the equation of our salvation

  23. because we are like children. But we also talked about some things that this text does not mean.

  24. And we did this because I ran across in a commentary that I've been using in my study

  25. of the Gospel of Mark by J.C. Ryle, who was a 19th century Anglican bishop. He wrote this,

  26. Of course, it is not pretended that there is any mention of baptism or even any reference to it in the

  27. verses before us. All we mean to say is that the expressions and gestures of our Lord in this passage

  28. are a strong indirect argument in favor of infant baptism. It is on this account that the passage

  29. occupies a prominent place in the baptismal service of the Church of England. This fascinated me

  30. as John MacArthur would say, this is a dry passage. There's no mention of baptism in it anywhere. And

  31. yet it is used by Anglicans as a central text for the baptism of infants. And so in brief last week,

  32. I made the point to you that this text does not mean that there's some sort of special salvific category

  33. for children, although I would make a case there is from other biblical texts, but not this one. Or that

  34. this text is a case for infant baptism. And I promise you that we would look at that at greater length

  35. today. So we're starting kind of as a jumping off point, Mark chapter 10, but we're going to look at some

    Mark 10 chapter mention

  36. selected texts today. Now, as I don't typically do, we're going to be dealing thematically. I want to encourage you to

  37. try to turn and try to keep up with me, but I'm afraid I have a lot of info to cover.

  38. My normal 45-minute sermon is about four and a half pages. This is seven, so I'm going to move and try to get us

  39. through, because I know you guys are already all hungry.

  40. There are a number of categories of what people believe about baptism, and there are some various

  41. erroneous views that we won't even address in any degree today. But the two more common categories that we

  42. would find people that we would fellowship with that believe are paedo-baptists and credo-baptists.

  43. Now, paedo-baptism or paedo-baptists is derived from the Greek paes simply means child. It's a simple term,

  44. sounds really fancy. Anglicans, Lutherans, Presbyterians, Methodists, Episcopalians, more erroneous

  45. views like the Catholic Church are paedo-baptists. We are, our church, I can't speak for every individual

  46. here, we are, I am, what's called a credo-baptist, which is from Latin, credo, I believe.

  47. Now, for the sake of simplicity for this sermon, I'm going to use the terms paedo-baptist and

  48. Presbyterian interchangeably, and let me tell you why. I'm going to paint with some extremely broad

  49. brushstrokes over the coming 45 minutes or so, but we find ourselves most theologically aligned

  50. with the Presbyterian Church, and specifically the branch of the Presbyterian Church known as the

  51. Presbyterian Church of America, the PCA Church. I am thankful for our PCA brethren. I want you to hear me

  52. very carefully. Please let this flavor everything else I say today. I am thankful for them. In fact, I discovered

  53. that every commentary I'm using for Mark right now was written by a Presbyterian. Isn't that fascinating?

  54. They have offered so much to the Kingdom of God. We have a PCA church in our town, which I love,

  55. and I am thankful for. I consider the pastor a friend, although we have had trouble finding time

  56. to get together and to know each other at a deeper level. We'll continue to work on that. I am thankful

  57. for their partnership in the Gospel in this community. Glad that they are here.

  58. However, we need to know why we believe what we believe. Not simply because it's another flavor,

  59. it's another idea concerning baptism, but because we have conviction about it. Some would have us just

  60. amiably disagree and fellowship with one another. I read a sermon this week from a pastor who was

  61. celebrating that he had both Credo Baptist and Paedo Baptist in his congregation. To say that this is a

  62. secondary issue, which I agree, it's not central to the Gospel. Baptism is not necessary for salvation,

  63. but it is an important doctrine. Baptism is not only given as an individual commandment to you and to me,

  64. but it is granted to the church, to the local church, as an ordinance. An ordinance or a sacrament. We tend to not,

  65. in Protestant churches, use the term sacrament because Catholics believe that the sacraments

  66. actually administer grace. They go in your good person list. We don't believe this is the case. So we tend to use

  67. the term ordinance. That is, it was ordained by Christ. An ordinance is a Christian right with particular

  68. significance. There's two of them. In the case of baptism, it's the Christian right that grants

  69. admittance to the covenant community. Paedo and Credo Baptists agree on this. The Lord's Supper is the

  70. other, which renews our commitment to the covenant community. It's part of the reason we do it every

  71. Sunday here in our congregational meeting. Convictions ought to be held. I recently overheard a PCA pastor,

  72. one that none of you would know, say, well, we're pretty much a Baptist church.

  73. And it wasn't my place in the conversation to scream, no, you're not. You're not, right? In fact,

  74. what you believe about baptism stands in antithesis to what Baptists believe about baptism.

  75. Now, I, with you, wish there was no denominationalism. What a wonderful world that would be, where we all

  76. could agree on all things in the scriptures. But what I will say as a benefit, as a value of

  77. denominations, is that it means that we believe things, that we have convictions, that we stand firm

  78. in, and that collectively, as a local congregation, we hold those things together. It matters what we

  79. believe about baptism. I don't think it's okay that it's a non-issue in our churches. I do believe

  80. we should hold the same convictions, and I'll show you why in the coming moments. Now,

  81. paedo-baptists do not contest that a believer ought to be baptized if that person makes a profession of

  82. faith, and they have never been baptized. If you were not baptized as an infant, and you make a

  83. profession of faith, you should be baptized, right? Our point of contention is whether or not an infant

  84. should ever be baptized, right? So, paedo-baptists believe in believer's baptism, which is why I think

  85. it's important that we clarify that we're credo-baptists. We believe in believer's baptism alone, and not

  86. infant baptism in any case. We don't have to look long or make a very long, challenging argument for

  87. baptism of a believer. We see baptism as expression in the scriptures of repentance and faith. We see

  88. this in Acts chapter 2, verse 37 through 38 and 41. Now, when they heard this, they were cut to the

    Acts 2:37–38

  89. heart. This is the conclusion of Peter's sermon on the day of Pentecost, and said to Peter and the rest

  90. of the apostles, brothers, what shall we do? And Peter said to them, repent and be baptized, every one of you,

  91. in the name of Jesus Christ, for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the

  92. Holy Spirit. Repent and be baptized, and it's expression of our repentance. And then verse 41,

  93. so those who received this word, received the word, were baptized, and there were out of that day about

  94. 3,000 souls. We will address verse 39 in a moment. Colossians 2, 11-12, Paul also expresses

  95. baptism as a response of repentance and faith. Verse 11, chapter 2, Colossians,

  96. in him also you were circumcised with a circumcision made without hands by putting off the body of flesh

  97. by the circumcision of Christ, having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised

  98. with him through faith in the powerful working of God who raised him from the dead. So we have,

  99. those of us who have believed in Christ in the symbol of baptism, we've been buried with him,

  100. and we've been raised with him, past tense, through what? Our faith. It's an expression of a thing that

  101. has occurred. Our faith. It's commanded to us to baptize in the name of the Father and the Son and the

  102. Holy Spirit in the Great Commission, Matthew 28, 19 and 20. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations.

  103. See people come to repentance and faith and baptize them.

  104. We don't have to look hard to make this argument, and no one, no one disagrees on this point.

  105. To my knowledge, it has never been debated in the history of the church.

  106. I looked long and hard this past week for the history of infant baptism, and there is a lot of

  107. disagreement about it. Some say that it existed from the first century. Some say not until the third,

  108. which is the place that I'm arriving at. It would seem that it came about as part of state control of

  109. religion. It was a way to include all of the citizenship in the church so that they could be

  110. ruled over, but it's difficult. Boy, is it difficult. There's no lack of writing on the topic. I have read

  111. and read and read this week trying to to get all the education I could possibly gather on, and I have to

  112. tell you, I still feel a bit ignorant on the history of it all. Create some challenges for us. We want to

  113. look at the church past and understand how we should operate now. Like we want to stand on the shoulders

  114. of giants, and we have giants to stand upon their shoulders. Men that have contributed so much to our

  115. faith. This is a case, it would seem though, that we need to just look at the scriptures, because there is

  116. so much disagreement on the matter. Let me read to you from the Westminster Confession, 1646.

  117. Chapter 28 of Baptism. Now hear me, this is what the Presbyterian Church holds to in this day. This is

  118. their confession of faith. Section 1. Baptism is a sacrament, or ordinance, of the New Testament,

  119. ordained by Jesus Christ, not only for the solemn admission of the party baptized into the visible

  120. church. So it grants admission to the visible church, but also to be unto him a sign and seal of the

  121. covenant of grace, or his engrafting into Christ, right? It's a picture, it's a symbol of what has

  122. happened. A sign, a seal of covenant grace, and engrafting into Christ of regeneration, the changing

  123. of our hearts, of remission of sins, and of his giving up unto God through Jesus Christ to walk in newness

  124. of life. Okay? We all agree upon this. Boy, I read that and I say, that is beautiful. However, the Westminster

  125. Confession, chapter 28, section 4, says not only those that do actually profess faith in and obedience

  126. unto Christ, but also the infants of one or both believing parents are to be baptized.

  127. Now, I'm aware of all the arguments. If you sit in this room as a paedo-baptist, I'm completely aware

  128. of them, but when you read the Westminster Confection, it is contradictory. Not only in tone, but in reality,

  129. it is contradictory. Right? What did they just say baptism was about? Not only for the solemn admission

  130. of the party baptized into the visible church, right? But also as a sign and seal of covenant grace,

  131. and engrafting into Christ, regeneration, remission of sins, giving up unto God through Jesus Christ to

  132. walk in a newness of life. All of this is present moving forward. Not a future hope. The language

  133. doesn't say that at all. And so we find ourselves in a place of confusion. And there are three ways,

  134. I think, that the doctrine of infant baptism confuses the church. Isn't it interesting that as we've come

  135. to chapter 10, we have dealt now with the three stories so far with issues that are really contentious

  136. in the church that have been challenged in so many ways. A couple of weeks ago, we talked about divorce

  137. and remarriage and all of the views. And we started a process that our church is going to need to go to

  138. resolve what we believe about divorce and remarriage. We've come to this text, which on the surface doesn't

  139. seem to have anything to do with anything that would cause any contention whatsoever. However, it's been

  140. misused, I believe. And next week we get to talk about money, wealth, what's become of that in the church.

  141. We need clarity in our day. This has never been untrue. We need the Bible to communicate to us how it is

  142. we're to live our lives in every respect. I find this issue particularly frustrating because I love you guys.

  143. Again, broad strokes. I'm not upset at any one individual. I think that people who hold the doctrine of infant baptism

  144. do so with a clear conscience, with good motivation. But I just think they're wrong. I think they're confusing

  145. the church of God. I think that the reformers didn't go far enough. They took giant steps. We owe them so much,

  146. but they didn't press on into the truth. And that's what I want for us. And that's what I want for you as an

  147. individual. To submit yourself in every way to the Word of God. Three ways it confuses us. Infant baptism

  148. confuses our belief in the sufficiency of Scripture. It confuses our belief in the sufficiency of Scripture.

  149. I believe that the Scripture is a perfect guide to holiness. Psalm 19, 7-13. Listen carefully.

  150. Let them not have dominion over me. Then I shall be blameless and innocent.

  151. God's law is perfect to deliver us to this point that we might be blameless if we could keep it.

  152. Right? We're given that blamelessness in Christ. But the Word of God is sufficient for this. We don't need to appeal

  153. to history. We don't need to appeal to tradition. All we need is the Word of God.

  154. This is why I've been saying to you all summer long after reading our text, this is God's Word to us.

  155. Written for His glory and for our good. Right? Our good. Our eternal good.

  156. We would all do well to listen to it in order to believe its promises and obey its commands.

  157. Presbyterians find many of their roots in the Reformation, as do we as a Protestant denomination.

  158. Men that threw off the false teaching of the Catholic Church waved a banner called Sola Scriptura.

  159. By Scripture alone. We will not allow the history or the traditions of the Catholic Church to define for us what it is we should believe.

  160. You remember Martin Luther, the great Reformer, nailed his 95 feces on the door, 95 reasons that indulgences were not biblical.

  161. And he was summoned to the Diet of Worms in 1521.

  162. And he said this,

  163. The Reformation, the Reformers, had a principle they called the regulative principle of worship.

  164. As defined by John Calvin as follows,

  165. God disapproves of all modes of worship not expressly sanctioned by His Word.

  166. Not fascinating.

  167. Now they would say expressly sanctioned would be that it's given as a command or example,

  168. or that it could be deduced by good and necessary consequence,

  169. which was a way of the time simply to say plain reason or plain logic.

  170. This is all I want.

  171. Show me in the Scriptures.

  172. Show me where the Scriptures say it and use plain reason.

  173. Don't get fancy on me.

  174. Just show me with plain reason and the Scriptures that something is true,

  175. and I'll believe it to be true.

  176. A good example of something arrived at that's not expressly taught,

  177. but that it has arrived at by plain reason or logic,

  178. is the doctrine of the Trinity.

  179. The term Trinity is nowhere used in the Scriptures.

  180. However, the Bible speaks of the Father as God in Philippians 1-2,

  181. Jesus as God in Titus 2-13,

  182. and the Holy Spirit as God in Acts 5-3-4.

  183. So by plain reason, we can arrive at God being three in one.

  184. I don't believe this is the case for impton baptism.

  185. Infant baptism is nowhere taught in the Scriptures.

  186. Pato Baptists agree that it's nowhere expressly taught.

  187. They would just say that it can be inferred by plain reason.

  188. One of their primary defenses is that while it's not found anywhere expressly in the Scriptures,

  189. that it's also not anywhere expressly prohibited in the Scriptures,

  190. which I find fascinating.

  191. Again and again and again you'll read this type of reasoning.

  192. The Bible nowhere prohibits us from physically abusing our children, does it?

  193. Yet we know with plain reason, right?

  194. This way of treating our children is contradictory to the way in which we are guided to treat our children.

  195. The Bible nowhere expressly prohibits heroin use.

  196. However, we know that we're to honor and worship God with our bodies,

  197. not destroy them.

  198. These are plain reason.

  199. These are things that we can arrive at simply and easily.

  200. Infant baptism is not that way.

  201. And the argument of household baptisms is often made by paedo-baptists.

  202. Right?

  203. Places like Acts 16, 14-15,

  204. we see a woman named Lydia and her household is baptized.

  205. Acts 16, 30-34,

  206. and if you'd like to turn with me to this one, you can.

  207. Paul and Silas are in a Philippian prison.

  208. They're praying and singing hymns.

  209. You remember there's an earthquake and all the doors open up.

  210. And the Philippian jailer,

  211. the man that was in charge,

  212. feared for his life because he thought they had escaped.

  213. He was actually about to kill himself.

  214. In verse 30 of chapter 16,

  215. they told him,

  216. don't kill yourself, we're here.

  217. It says,

  218. It doesn't say anything about infants.

  219. In the text at all, does it?

  220. In fact,

  221. likely, a Philippian jailer who was in charge would have been a much older man.

  222. It probably wouldn't have had infants in the house anyway,

  223. but it doesn't say.

  224. It says nothing at all.

  225. It's an argument from silence.

  226. Are we to presume then that there's a doctrine we should practice in our churches

  227. because maybe?

  228. I could just as easily teach to you that there were teenagers in this house,

  229. as anyone else can make the case that there were infants in the house.

  230. 1 Corinthians 1.16,

  231. Paul here mentions baptizing the household of Stephanas.

  232. Again, no mention of infants,

  233. those who were unable to profess faith in Christ being baptized.

  234. Now, I mentioned that we were going to look at Acts chapter 2, verse 39,

    Acts 2:39

  235. that I would come back to it.

  236. Now, remember verse 37 and 38.

  237. Now, when they heard this,

  238. they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles,

  239. Brothers, what shall we do?

  240. And Peter said to them,

  241. Repent and be baptized,

  242. every one of you,

  243. in the name of Jesus Christ,

  244. for the forgiveness of your sins,

  245. and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

  246. Verse 39.

  247. For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off,

  248. everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself.

  249. Verse 40.

  250. And with many other words,

  251. he bore witness and continued to exhort them,

  252. saying,

  253. Save yourselves from this crooked generation.

  254. So those who received his word were baptized,

  255. and they were added to that day 3,000 souls.

  256. So you see in a sandwich,

  257. and I intentionally presented it to you in that way,

  258. verse 37,

  259. verse 38,

  260. response of faith.

  261. Verse 31,

  262. response of faith.

  263. And then we see verse 39,

  264. speaking of a promise for you and your children.

  265. But don't miss that it's also for all who are far off,

  266. everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself.

  267. Peter is broadening the scope of the gospel.

  268. The gospel is now available to all people who respond in faith.

  269. Not just you who are here on the day of Pentecost,

  270. but you can go back to your house,

  271. and you can preach the gospel to your kids.

  272. And they can receive it.

  273. And you can go far off and preach the gospel,

  274. and they can receive it.

  275. If our logic stays consistent with the Pato-Baptists,

  276. the promise being for you and for your children,

  277. but wait,

  278. and all who are far off,

  279. it would seem that when I become a Christian,

  280. my kids are automatically granted that as well,

  281. and everyone else,

  282. as long as I can call them far off.

  283. So you guys should run as far from me as you possibly can.

  284. It doesn't hold water.

  285. Pun intended.

  286. Turn to 1 Corinthians chapter 7.

    1 Corinthians 7 chapter mention

  287. There's a new issue in the church now.

  288. What happens if a believer is married to an unbeliever?

  289. This is now suddenly a new issue.

  290. Not people who are of the same lineage,

  291. not an Israelite married to an Israelite,

  292. but what happens now that there's a status change in a marriage?

  293. And Paul addresses that.

  294. Chapter 7, beginning in verse 12.

  295. To the rest I say, I, not the Lord,

  296. that if any brother has a wife who is an unbeliever,

  297. and she consents to live with him,

  298. he should not divorce her.

  299. Stay together.

  300. If any woman has a husband who is an unbeliever,

  301. and he consents to live with her,

  302. she should not divorce him.

  303. For the unbelieving husband is made holy because of his wife,

  304. and the unbelieving wife is made holy because of her husband.

  305. Otherwise, your children would be unclean,

  306. but as it is, they are holy.

  307. It's interesting language, right?

  308. Verse 15.

  309. But if the unbelieving partner separates, let it be so.

  310. In such cases, the brother or sister is not enslaved.

  311. God has called you to peace.

  312. For how do you know, wife, whether you will save your husband?

  313. Or how do you know, husband, whether you will save your wife?

  314. Now, firstly, the point of the text is speaking of unbelieving spouses, right?

  315. You see that.

  316. It wraps back around to that with this interesting little interjection

  317. that the children are made holy.

  318. Verse 16 says,

  319. Remain with them.

  320. If they're willing to remain with you, remain with them.

  321. Because verse 16 says,

  322. How do you know?

  323. Maybe in your living out the gospel

  324. and your presentation of the gospel to your spouse,

  325. they may become saved.

  326. What a glorious thing that would be

  327. if both of you would be regenerate

  328. and your marriage could better reflect the glory of God.

  329. So if they're willing, stay with them.

  330. That's the point of the text.

  331. This is what he's trying to communicate to us.

  332. So what does he mean for the unbelieving husband is made holy?

  333. Another way of translating that word is made sanctified or set apart.

  334. And all Paul's communicating here

  335. is that the blessings of the gospel are made available to these people.

  336. If they're willing as an unbeliever to stay in your house,

  337. just as your children are going to stay in your house,

  338. let them stay.

  339. It's good for them to be in the presence of someone who is redeemed.

  340. They are in a sense then set apart,

  341. given the blessings of God through your faith.

  342. This is all Paul is communicating to us here.

  343. Now the Pato-Baptist argument draws a lot,

  344. and I think rightly this is the best possible case for it,

  345. through the covenants,

  346. through the covenant of grace specifically.

  347. Now Presbyterians are what we would call

  348. covenant theologians or covenantalists.

  349. They're on one end of a spectrum

  350. of how it is that we understand

  351. the ages and the covenants of God.

  352. I find that covenant theology

  353. is over-reductionary.

  354. It's almost too simple.

  355. And it is that it looks that there are two

  356. overarching covenants in the scriptures.

  357. There's a covenant of works

  358. which was given to Adam and Eve pre-fall.

  359. They broke that.

  360. They broke the fellowship as a result.

  361. And ever since then,

  362. everyone else who has lived

  363. has lived under the covenant of grace.

  364. Whether or not they responded to it

  365. and were the people of God,

  366. they live underneath it.

  367. And in an over-simplification,

  368. that means that every promise

  369. given to the Israelites of the Old Testament

  370. is a promise that directly correlates

  371. to the church in our day.

  372. I just don't think it's that easy.

  373. The other end of that are dispensationalists,

  374. the whole left-behind crowd,

  375. if you're familiar with that.

  376. I'm also not on that end of the spectrum.

  377. I'm somewhere in between.

  378. It's very difficult to sort it all out

  379. and to figure out

  380. where does God make a promise

  381. to the Old Testament people of God

  382. that carries forward

  383. to the New Testament people of God?

  384. How do these things find their mark?

  385. There's not possibly enough time

  386. to work out all the intricacies of that.

  387. There wasn't enough time in this week

  388. to work out all the intricacies of that

  389. and the way God's covenants manifest

  390. in the New Testament

  391. versus the Old Testament.

  392. But this is the draw that they make,

  393. the connection that they make,

  394. that the Old Testament Abrahamic covenant

  395. found in Genesis chapter 12

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  396. and the mark of it,

  397. which was circumcision to the males,

  398. which was just for infants eventually,

  399. once all the men had been circumcised,

  400. new men were circumcised,

  401. is found in Genesis chapter 17.

    Genesis 17 chapter mention

  402. So there's a mark given to the people of God,

  403. specifically men of the people of God,

  404. and that now baptism is the direct correlation

  405. of that in our day.

  406. Now rightly, right, again,

  407. respect these men,

  408. valuable biblical theologians.

  409. Rightly, Romans chapter 9,

    Romans 9 chapter mention

  410. second half of 6 through 8,

  411. for not all who are descended from Israel

  412. belong to Israel,

  413. and not all are children of Abraham

  414. because they are his offspring,

  415. but through Isaac shall your offspring be named.

  416. This means that it is not

  417. the children of the flesh

  418. who are the children of God,

  419. but the children of the promise

  420. are counted as offspring.

  421. We see this to be true in the Scriptures,

  422. that we are children of Abraham.

  423. We can sing that ridiculous song,

  424. Father Abraham,

  425. and turn in circles

  426. and kick our legs around

  427. because we are children of Abraham

  428. because of the spiritual blessings

  429. that have been brought to us.

  430. But the covenants have changed, right?

  431. There was a physical birth,

  432. a physical birthright granted,

  433. but now it's a spiritual birthright

  434. that we have.

  435. I believe that some of the promises

  436. of God still apply to the nation,

  437. the actual bloodline of Israel

  438. in this day,

  439. but not all of them do.

  440. Romans chapter 2,

    Romans 2:28

  441. verse 28 and 29,

  442. Paul writes,

  443. For no one is a Jew

  444. who is merely one outwardly,

  445. nor is circumcision outward and physical,

  446. but a Jew is one inwardly,

  447. and circumcision is a matter of the heart

  448. by the Spirit,

  449. not by the letter.

  450. His praise is not from man,

  451. what man can do,

  452. what man can accomplish,

  453. but from God,

  454. because God has circumcised our hearts,

  455. made us clean in that way.

  456. In Wayne Grudem's Systematic Theology,

  457. which I would commend to you,

  458. he writes,

  459. We should not be surprised

  460. that there was a change

  461. from the way the covenant community

  462. was entered in the Old Testament

  463. through physical birth

  464. to the way the churches entered

  465. in the New Testament,

  466. which is spiritual birth.

  467. There are many analogous changes

  468. between the Old and New Covenants

  469. in other areas as well.

  470. There's a few for you.

  471. While the Israelites fed on

  472. physical manna in the wilderness,

  473. New Testament believers

  474. feed on Jesus Christ,

  475. the true bread that comes down

  476. from heaven,

  477. John chapter 6.

    John 6 chapter mention

  478. The Israelites drank physical water

  479. that gushed from the rock

  480. in the wilderness,

  481. but those who believe in Christ

  482. drink of the living water

  483. of eternal life that he gives,

  484. John chapter 4.

    John 4 chapter mention

  485. The Old Covenant had a physical temple

  486. to which Israel came for worship,

  487. but in the New Covenant,

  488. believers are built

  489. into a spiritual temple,

  490. 1 Peter.

  491. Old Covenant believers

  492. offer physical sacrifices

  493. of animals and crops

  494. upon an altar,

  495. but New Testament believers

  496. offer spiritual sacrifices

  497. acceptable to God

  498. through Jesus Christ.

  499. 1 Peter and Hebrews.

  500. Old Covenant believers

  501. receive from God

  502. the physical land of Israel

  503. which he had promised to them,

  504. but New Testament believers

  505. receive a better country

  506. that is a heavenly one.

  507. Hebrews chapter 11.

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  508. In the same way,

  509. in the Old Covenant,

  510. those who were the physical seed

  511. or descendants of Abraham

  512. were members of the people of Israel,

  513. but in the New Testament,

  514. those who are the spiritual seed

  515. or descendants of Abraham

  516. by faith are members of the church.

  517. And how do we know?

  518. How do we know?

  519. If you were a member,

  520. if you were a seed of Abraham

  521. unless you have professed faith in Christ.

  522. Furthermore,

  523. the Bible nowhere makes such a connection

  524. between the Old Covenant sign

  525. and the New Covenant sign.

  526. Doesn't it seem like a pretty important thing

  527. to connect if it was meant to be connected?

  528. As baptism is an ordinance of the church,

  529. it reasons,

  530. it reasons that this would follow.

  531. Recall John's baptism,

  532. Mark chapter 1, verse 4.

    Mark 1:4

  533. It was a baptism of what?

  534. Repentance.

  535. It was a baptism of repentance.

  536. Recall John the Baptist's response

  537. to the Pharisees and the Sadducees,

  538. the religious elite,

  539. those who had a bloodline heritage

  540. to the people of God.

  541. Verse 7, Matthew chapter 3,

    Matthew 3 chapter mention

  542. he says,

  543. But when he saw many of the Pharisees

  544. coming to his baptism,

  545. he said to them,

  546. You brood of vipers,

  547. who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

  548. Bear fruit in keeping with repentance

  549. and do not presume to say to yourselves,

  550. We have Abraham as our father.

  551. For I tell you,

  552. God is able from these stones

  553. to raise up children for Abraham.

  554. We are those stones

  555. that have been raised,

  556. professed faith in Christ,

  557. and are baptized

  558. with the baptism of repentance.

  559. He refused to baptize

  560. those who didn't bear

  561. fruit of repentance.

  562. Now here's an argument for you

  563. from silence.

  564. Acts chapter 15,

    Acts 15 chapter mention

  565. the Jerusalem council.

  566. Paul and Barnabas

  567. are currently in Antioch,

  568. and we see,

  569. starting in verse 1,

  570. but some men came down from Judea

  571. and were teaching the brothers,

  572. Unless you are circumcised,

  573. according to the custom of Moses,

  574. you cannot be saved.

  575. Unless you take this sign,

  576. the Jews,

  577. you cannot be saved.

  578. And after Paul and Barnabas

  579. had no small dissension and debate,

  580. I love that record,

  581. no small,

  582. a large dissension and debate with them,

  583. Paul and Barnabas

  584. and some of the others

  585. were appointed to go up to Jerusalem

  586. to the apostles

  587. and the elders

  588. about this question.

  589. Do you recall this story

  590. that the gospel has been expanded

  591. to the Gentiles,

  592. and Paul and Barnabas

  593. are on missionary journey,

  594. and they are bringing people

  595. to faith in Christ,

  596. and there's this constant nagging

  597. of the Judaizers.

  598. We see it in Galatians.

  599. That's what the book of Galatians

  600. is all about,

  601. is telling them that

  602. they can't be saved by their works.

  603. They don't have to be circumcised.

  604. Don't be circumcised.

  605. It doesn't matter anymore.

  606. It's no longer the sign.

  607. It's no longer the mark.

  608. And so they go,

  609. and they have this recorded conversation.

  610. This council decides

  611. to send letters out

  612. to all the Gentile churches

  613. to tell them not to worry about it.

  614. You're okay.

  615. You don't have to be circumcised.

  616. Why did they not record here

  617. by the hand of Luke,

  618. baptism's the new thing.

  619. Don't worry about the circumcision.

  620. Don't worry about the circumcision more,

  621. but be sure you're baptizing

  622. because that now is

  623. this new sign of the covenant.

  624. They don't mention it anywhere.

  625. Baptize your infants.

  626. Baptize your infants.

  627. Baptize your infants.

  628. It's not in the scriptures.

  629. Can you get your head around that?

  630. I can't.

  631. I have a really difficult time

  632. doing so.

  633. And I have to say,

  634. the whole matter seems to be

  635. a way of reconciling

  636. the doctrine of original sin

  637. and the need to repent and believe

  638. concerning children who die

  639. prior to such confessions.

  640. Isn't that a challenging thing?

  641. If we're to believe

  642. that we have a father

  643. who was Adam

  644. and his sin,

  645. the original sin,

  646. passed to us,

  647. that we have the same guilt,

  648. isn't that a challenge

  649. that we're born in iniquity,

  650. the Psalms say?

  651. What happens to our young ones?

  652. We're not able to respond.

  653. We don't get that.

  654. How can we possibly reconcile

  655. these things?

  656. There are some that just argue

  657. against the doctrine of original sin,

  658. stating that children are inclined

  659. to sin by their nature.

  660. They're born with a propensity

  661. to sin by their nature,

  662. but they're not guilty of sin

  663. until they knowingly sin.

  664. My kids knowingly sin all the time.

  665. I've got a four-year-old

  666. and a two-year-old.

  667. This is where we get the concept

  668. of the age of accountability

  669. found nowhere in the Scriptures.

  670. As a church,

  671. we hold to the doctrine

  672. of original sin.

  673. Our statement of faith says,

  674. we believe that man was created

  675. in holiness

  676. under the law of his Maker,

  677. but by voluntary transgression

  678. fell from that holy and happy state.

  679. This would be Adam.

  680. In consequence of which

  681. all mankind are now sinners,

  682. not by constraint,

  683. but choice,

  684. being by nature

  685. utterly void of that holiness

  686. required by the law of God,

  687. positively inclined to evil,

  688. and therefore under just condemnation

  689. to eternal ruin

  690. without defense or excuse.

  691. We believe this to be true.

  692. What happens to children

  693. who die in the womb?

  694. To our young ones?

  695. To children who are mentally,

  696. or adults for that matter,

  697. who are mentally handicapped

  698. and don't seem to be able

  699. to understand and conceptualize?

  700. The truth of it is

  701. that I don't know.

  702. I throw myself on the mercy of God

  703. for the matter.

  704. I lean on his character

  705. to say, surely,

  706. surely they're not being

  707. eternally punished.

  708. Surely not.

  709. There are some instances

  710. in the Scripture.

  711. We see David has a young one

  712. that dies,

  713. and he says that one day

  714. he'll be with him.

  715. Speaking of glory.

  716. We've got some hints

  717. and some clues to that,

  718. but the Scripture

  719. don't speak clearly to it.

  720. And it puts us in a place

  721. where we ought to just say

  722. we believe that God

  723. knows what is best.

  724. We trust him in that

  725. because he's good,

  726. sovereign ruler.

  727. Now I'll say that

  728. modern Presbyterians

  729. don't believe that infant baptism

  730. is salvific.

  731. They do not believe that.

  732. Again, broad brush,

  733. maybe some do.

  734. As far as I know,

  735. PCA Church does not believe

  736. that it is salvific,

  737. salvific.

  738. Although they do use

  739. the terminology that it's

  740. a sign of covenant promise,

  741. which is hard for me

  742. because it seems that if God

  743. makes a promise,

  744. he necessarily fulfills

  745. that promise.

  746. And the Westminster Confession

  747. seems to give some hint to that.

  748. Again, chapter 28,

  749. this is section 6.

  750. The efficacy,

  751. or the effect,

  752. of baptism

  753. is not tied to that

  754. moment of time

  755. wherein it is administered.

  756. Right?

  757. So they're not saved

  758. at the time of baptism.

  759. Yet,

  760. notwithstanding,

  761. or nevertheless,

  762. by the right use

  763. of this ordinance,

  764. the grace promise

  765. is not only offered,

  766. but really exhibited

  767. and confirmed

  768. by the Holy Ghost

  769. to such,

  770. whether of age

  771. or infants,

  772. as that grace

  773. belongeth unto

  774. according to the counsel

  775. of God's own will

  776. in his appointed time.

  777. It seems to say

  778. that they will.

  779. That they will

  780. be saved.

  781. They have another section

  782. that says

  783. not necessarily.

  784. It's fascinating.

  785. It seems very confusing

  786. to me.

  787. I found on the website

  788. for the Orthodox

  789. Presbyterian Church,

  790. not PCA,

  791. so to be very clear

  792. and fair about that.

  793. This gentleman wrote,

  794. Moreover,

  795. I personally believe

  796. that when believing parents

  797. sometimes experience

  798. the tragedy

  799. of an infant

  800. miscarried from the womb

  801. or dying soon

  802. after birth,

  803. we may cling

  804. with reasonable hope

  805. that our little one

  806. is in heaven

  807. with the children's Savior.

  808. Worldlings,

  809. that is those

  810. who are not believers,

  811. have no such hope.

  812. That's the inference

  813. he draws.

  814. In the fourth century,

  815. Augustine,

  816. who we love,

  817. wrote this.

  818. If you wish

  819. to be a Christian,

  820. do not believe,

  821. nor say,

  822. nor teach

  823. that infants

  824. who die before baptism

  825. can obtain the remission

  826. of original sin.

  827. If you wish

  828. to be a Christian,

  829. how dare you

  830. say,

  831. believe,

  832. or teach

  833. that kids

  834. that are not baptized

  835. can be saved.

  836. That's what he's saying

  837. here.

  838. So the baptism

  839. then,

  840. in some way,

  841. extends grace to them.

  842. And again,

  843. whoever says

  844. that even infants

  845. are vivified

  846. or brought to life

  847. in Christ,

  848. when they depart

  849. this life

  850. without participation

  851. in his sacrament,

  852. that is baptism,

  853. both opposes

  854. the apostolic preaching

  855. and condemns

  856. the whole church

  857. which hastens

  858. to baptize infants

  859. because it

  860. unhesitantly believes

  861. that otherwise

  862. they cannot possibly

  863. be vivified

  864. in Christ.

  865. Right?

  866. No church

  867. that hastens

  868. to baptize them

  869. because if we don't

  870. they can't possibly

  871. be vivified

  872. in Christ.

  873. So it would seem

  874. that early

  875. church leaders,

  876. Augustine of Hippo

  877. believed that there was

  878. grace administered

  879. to baptism.

  880. There's much confusion

  881. over this

  882. where the Bible

  883. does not give

  884. clarity.

  885. We should simply

  886. not try

  887. to define it.

  888. So it confuses

  889. our belief

  890. in the sufficiency

  891. of Scripture.

  892. Point one.

  893. These are going

  894. to move faster now.

  895. Foundation laid.

  896. It confuses

  897. the nature

  898. of the church.

  899. It confuses

  900. the nature

  901. of the church.

  902. What is the church?

  903. We believe

  904. in a believer's

  905. church.

  906. Ephesians 5.25

  907. says Christ

  908. loved the church

  909. and gave himself

  910. up for her.

  911. Every New Testament

  912. reference concerning

  913. the universal church

  914. or the local church

  915. rather,

  916. whether it's past,

  917. present,

  918. or future,

  919. is always speaking

  920. of those who are

  921. in the faith.

  922. Not those outside,

  923. not those that we

  924. question,

  925. not our kids,

  926. but those who are

  927. in the faith.

  928. Remember the

  929. Westminster Confession?

  930. Baptism is a sacrament

  931. in the New Testament

  932. ordained by Jesus Christ

  933. not only for the

  934. solemn mission

  935. of the party

  936. baptized in the

  937. invisible church.

  938. We believe that

  939. to be true,

  940. but we just believe

  941. that somebody

  942. must be saved

  943. for that to be

  944. the case.

  945. From our own

  946. document,

  947. from our bylaws,

  948. those seeking to

  949. become members

  950. of Christ's family

  951. church must meet

  952. the following

  953. conditions.

  954. Number one,

  955. such persons

  956. must profess

  957. who have been

  958. born again

  959. of the Holy

  960. Spirit,

  961. having believed

  962. in the power

  963. of God Almighty

  964. in Jesus'

  965. death,

  966. resurrection,

  967. and ascension

  968. to save them

  969. from the bondage

  970. and penalty

  971. of their sins

  972. and bearing fruit

  973. of their new

  974. life in Him.

  975. You must be

  976. a Christian

  977. and you must

  978. be giving

  979. some evidence

  980. of that,

  981. that you are

  982. a Christian,

  983. that you are

  984. a good tree

  985. bearing good fruit.

  986. And secondly,

  987. such persons

  988. must have been

  989. baptized by

  990. immersion or

  991. expressed intent

  992. thereunto,

  993. right,

  994. when we get

  995. the tank out

  996. to make that

  997. happen as soon

  998. as we possibly

  999. can.

  1000. That we agree

  1001. upon this,

  1002. that we are

  1003. believers and

  1004. we are united

  1005. in this together.

  1006. To be clear,

  1007. the kids in our

  1008. church that

  1009. haven't professed

  1010. faith in Christ

  1011. and been baptized

  1012. are not members

  1013. of our church.

  1014. They don't sit

  1015. in our meetings

  1016. and vote.

  1017. Right?

  1018. We don't hold

  1019. them to the

  1020. same standard.

  1021. Please don't

  1022. hold my kids

  1023. to the same

  1024. standard you

  1025. hold me to.

  1026. They're not

  1027. yet members

  1028. of our church.

  1029. What a wonderful

  1030. opportunity to

  1031. not give our

  1032. kids a false

  1033. sense of

  1034. their salvation.

  1035. Does it not

  1036. confuse that

  1037. matter when you

  1038. say to a child

  1039. you were baptized,

  1040. therefore you're

  1041. part of the

  1042. covenant community

  1043. because you

  1044. have received

  1045. the covenant

  1046. sign of

  1047. promise.

  1048. Oh, but wait.

  1049. You must repent

  1050. and believe.

  1051. After the fact,

  1052. you must respond

  1053. in faith from

  1054. the symbol of

  1055. the baptism that

  1056. was originally

  1057. given to you

  1058. as a child.

  1059. In our church,

  1060. failure to be

  1061. baptized would

  1062. constitute a

  1063. matter of church

  1064. discipline.

  1065. If you want to

  1066. join our church

  1067. and you've never

  1068. been baptized or

  1069. you were baptized

  1070. as an infant

  1071. and you don't

  1072. see the case

  1073. for believer's

  1074. baptism and

  1075. you refuse to

  1076. be baptized as

  1077. a believer,

  1078. we would say

  1079. that we can't

  1080. fellowship together

  1081. in this way.

  1082. It's a plain

  1083. case in the

  1084. scriptures made

  1085. here.

  1086. If you were to

  1087. be obedient to

  1088. the call of

  1089. Christ, you

  1090. need to be

  1091. baptized.

  1092. You say,

  1093. no, I

  1094. totally disagree.

  1095. If we allowed

  1096. you to be a

  1097. member of our

  1098. church, there

  1099. would be an

  1100. immediate case

  1101. for church

  1102. discipline.

  1103. Would there

  1104. not?

  1105. We'd be saying

  1106. repent of your

  1107. sin of not

  1108. being baptized.

  1109. And the

  1110. proper repentance

  1111. would be to

  1112. be baptized.

  1113. And if you

  1114. didn't, we

  1115. would have

  1116. to excuse

  1117. you from

  1118. the church.

  1119. So we

  1120. just prevent

  1121. that altogether

  1122. by not allowing

  1123. it to begin

  1124. with.

  1125. Listen again,

  1126. the Westminster

  1127. Confession,

  1128. chapter 28,

  1129. section 5.

  1130. Although it

  1131. be a great

  1132. sin to

  1133. contemn or

  1134. treat with

  1135. contentment or

  1136. neglect this

  1137. ordinance, yet

  1138. grace and

  1139. salvation are

  1140. not so

  1141. inseparably

  1142. annexed unto

  1143. it as that no

  1144. person can be

  1145. regenerated or

  1146. saved.

  1147. without it.

  1148. Or that

  1149. all are

  1150. baptized are

  1151. undoubtedly

  1152. regenerated.

  1153. So catch

  1154. what they're

  1155. saying.

  1156. It's a

  1157. great sin

  1158. to hold the

  1159. position I

  1160. have.

  1161. To treat

  1162. infant baptism

  1163. with contempt.

  1164. Will not do

  1165. it.

  1166. Will not

  1167. baptize my

  1168. children.

  1169. Yet, again,

  1170. broad stroke,

  1171. in many,

  1172. many, many

  1173. Presbyterian

  1174. churches, if

  1175. you hold

  1176. different

  1177. convictions,

  1178. you're not

  1179. required to

  1180. have your

  1181. child baptized.

  1182. What kind

  1183. of a

  1184. conviction is

  1185. that?

  1186. And about

  1187. an ordinance,

  1188. no less.

  1189. My personal

  1190. conviction

  1191. concerning

  1192. alcohol is

  1193. that I

  1194. don't.

  1195. I don't

  1196. drink alcohol

  1197. because of

  1198. my position,

  1199. because of

  1200. the culture

  1201. in which we

  1202. live in.

  1203. I think that

  1204. the possible

  1205. negativity of

  1206. doing so

  1207. far outweighs

  1208. any short-term

  1209. benefit of

  1210. doing so.

  1211. It just

  1212. makes no

  1213. sense to

  1214. me.

  1215. But the

  1216. scriptures

  1217. nowhere prohibit

  1218. you from

  1219. doing so,

  1220. and therefore

  1221. I'm not going

  1222. to teach you

  1223. that you

  1224. cannot.

  1225. Right?

  1226. This is the

  1227. type of

  1228. gray area

  1229. conviction that

  1230. we can

  1231. disagree on.

  1232. Somebody,

  1233. I know many

  1234. of you do,

  1235. enjoy a good

  1236. glass of wine

  1237. with your

  1238. meal,

  1239. go ahead.

  1240. No problem.

  1241. We can

  1242. fellowship

  1243. together on

  1244. that.

  1245. We can be

  1246. a church

  1247. together around

  1248. that matter.

  1249. This is one.

  1250. How could we

  1251. possibly disagree

  1252. on this?

  1253. Right?

  1254. A conviction

  1255. about an

  1256. ordinance given

  1257. to us as a

  1258. church.

  1259. How it is

  1260. that we

  1261. define the

  1262. community of

  1263. faith.

  1264. And you say,

  1265. nah, don't

  1266. worry about it.

  1267. I say a

  1268. conviction treated

  1269. that way is no

  1270. conviction at

  1271. all.

  1272. Thirdly,

  1273. it confuses

  1274. the meaning

  1275. of believer's

  1276. baptism.

  1277. Infant baptism

  1278. confuses the

  1279. meaning of

  1280. believer's

  1281. baptism.

  1282. Again, let's

  1283. just remember,

  1284. what is it that

  1285. we believe

  1286. baptism means?

  1287. It's a symbol,

  1288. right?

  1289. It's not

  1290. salvific.

  1291. It doesn't

  1292. bring to us

  1293. any type of

  1294. grace.

  1295. It's a picture

  1296. of the grace

  1297. that's already

  1298. occurred in

  1299. our lives.

  1300. Romans chapter

    Romans 6 chapter mention

  1301. 6.

  1302. Again, notice

  1303. the past tense

  1304. language.

  1305. You not know

  1306. that all of us

  1307. who have been

  1308. baptized into

  1309. Christ Jesus

  1310. were baptized

  1311. into his

  1312. death.

  1313. We were

  1314. buried,

  1315. therefore,

  1316. with him

  1317. by baptism

  1318. into death

  1319. in order

  1320. that,

  1321. just as

  1322. Christ was

  1323. raised from

  1324. the dead

  1325. by the glory

  1326. of the

  1327. Father,

  1328. we too

  1329. might walk

  1330. in newness

  1331. of life.

  1332. Our old

  1333. selves have

  1334. been put

  1335. to death,

  1336. and we are

  1337. now a new

  1338. creation.

  1339. This is the

  1340. picture of

  1341. baptism,

  1342. right?

  1343. It's showing

  1344. everybody,

  1345. I have

  1346. believed in

  1347. Christ.

  1348. The old

  1349. Nathan is

  1350. dead and

  1351. gone.

  1352. The new

  1353. Nathan is

  1354. here.

  1355. I want

  1356. to be in

  1357. fellowship

  1358. with you.

  1359. I want

  1360. to be held

  1361. to that

  1362. standard.

  1363. Please help

  1364. me to do

  1365. so.

  1366. Michael

  1367. Green,

  1368. Presbyterian,

  1369. in his

  1370. book,

  1371. Baptism,

  1372. its purpose,

  1373. practice,

  1374. and power,

  1375. says this,

  1376. and I just

  1377. want to tell you

  1378. up front,

  1379. I completely

  1380. disagree with

  1381. him.

  1382. Infant

  1383. baptism

  1384. stresses the

  1385. objectivity of

  1386. the gospel.

  1387. It points to

  1388. the solid

  1389. achievement of

  1390. Christ crucified

  1391. and risen,

  1392. whether or not

  1393. we respond to

  1394. it,

  1395. not that we

  1396. gain anything

  1397. from it unless

  1398. we repent and

  1399. believe.

  1400. I agree with

  1401. that.

  1402. But it is the

  1403. standing

  1404. demonstration that

  1405. our salvation

  1406. does not

  1407. depend on our

  1408. own very

  1409. fallible faith,

  1410. it depends on

  1411. what God has

  1412. done for us.

  1413. Infant

  1414. baptism

  1415. stresses the

  1416. initiative of

  1417. God and

  1418. salvation,

  1419. should it be

  1420. attached primarily

  1421. to man's

  1422. response or

  1423. to God's

  1424. initiative?

  1425. That is the

  1426. heart of the

  1427. question.

  1428. For the

  1429. Baptist,

  1430. baptism primarily

  1431. bears witness to

  1432. what we do in

  1433. responding to

  1434. the grace of

  1435. God.

  1436. For the

  1437. paedo-baptist,

  1438. it primarily bears

  1439. the witness to

  1440. what God has

  1441. done to make

  1442. it all

  1443. possible.

  1444. Wrong!

  1445. That is not

  1446. what we do when

  1447. we baptize

  1448. somebody.

  1449. We are not

  1450. applauding the

  1451. person baptized.

  1452. Good for you.

  1453. You chose

  1454. faith in

  1455. Christ.

  1456. Exalt you.

  1457. Exalt you.

  1458. Not at all.

  1459. We are praising

  1460. God for what

  1461. He has done,

  1462. what He has

  1463. accomplished in

  1464. that person.

  1465. We know you are

  1466. a Christian.

  1467. You have

  1468. professed faith.

  1469. Let's see what

  1470. that looks like.

  1471. Let's get our

  1472. minds around it

  1473. by burying

  1474. you and

  1475. raising you

  1476. once again.

  1477. Michael Green

  1478. needs to sit

  1479. down with me.

  1480. This is a

  1481. horrible explanation

  1482. of what we

  1483. believe baptism

  1484. to emphasize.

  1485. Now as a

  1486. separate but

  1487. really inextricably

  1488. tied issue is

  1489. the confusion

  1490. about the

  1491. mode of

  1492. baptism.

  1493. I will tell

  1494. you, this

  1495. is not a

  1496. hill I am

  1497. going to

  1498. die on.

  1499. I would

  1500. not do

  1501. it.

  1502. However, we

  1503. baptize by

  1504. immersion and

  1505. we do so

  1506. for two

  1507. reasons.

  1508. For what we

  1509. believe the

  1510. ordinance of

  1511. baptism

  1512. represents.

  1513. That is our

  1514. death.

  1515. I have said

  1516. to you before,

  1517. I will say

  1518. it to you

  1519. again.

  1520. If our

  1521. culture as

  1522. a whole begins

  1523. laying people

  1524. out on the

  1525. ground when

  1526. they die and

  1527. tossing a

  1528. handful of

  1529. dirt in

  1530. their face and

  1531. walking away,

  1532. this is the

  1533. way we expose

  1534. of dead

  1535. people, we

  1536. may reconsider

  1537. the way that

  1538. we baptize

  1539. people.

  1540. Maybe.

  1541. Wait till you

  1542. get to my

  1543. second point.

  1544. But just by

  1545. this one point,

  1546. maybe we would

  1547. consider that.

  1548. But what do we

  1549. do with dead

  1550. people?

  1551. They are buried.

  1552. Even if they are

  1553. not buried,

  1554. they are in

  1555. tomb.

  1556. You keep

  1557. dead bodies

  1558. away from

  1559. animals.

  1560. Let them

  1561. decompose at

  1562. their own

  1563. happy rate.

  1564. This is the

  1565. way that people

  1566. are dealt

  1567. with when

  1568. they die.

  1569. I've got to

  1570. tell you,

  1571. we've got a

  1572. cattle trough.

  1573. If you haven't

  1574. been here long,

  1575. we have a

  1576. cattle trough we

  1577. bring out and

  1578. we put it

  1579. right here.

  1580. It is a

  1581. pain in the

  1582. rear.

  1583. I've done

  1584. it each

  1585. time.

  1586. I have

  1587. flooded our

  1588. stage twice

  1589. and spent

  1590. hours cleaning

  1591. up the

  1592. water.

  1593. It's a

  1594. pain.

  1595. It really,

  1596. really is.

  1597. It's heavy.

  1598. I had to

  1599. devise a

  1600. complicated hose

  1601. system to

  1602. fill it.

  1603. We've got to

  1604. spread plastic

  1605. out all over

  1606. the place.

  1607. It is worth

  1608. the trouble

  1609. though.

  1610. It is worth

  1611. the trouble

  1612. because of the

  1613. picture and

  1614. what it

  1615. represents.

  1616. That's the

  1617. first reason.

  1618. Secondly,

  1619. though,

  1620. the Greek

  1621. word from

  1622. which we

  1623. derive our

  1624. English,

  1625. baptize or

  1626. baptist,

  1627. is baptizo,

  1628. which means,

  1629. catch this,

  1630. which means

  1631. not to

  1632. wash.

  1633. Not to

  1634. wash.

  1635. It means to

  1636. dunk repeatedly

  1637. and in a

  1638. number of

  1639. cases it's

  1640. used for

  1641. drown,

  1642. immerse,

  1643. go underwater.

  1644. Now,

  1645. you see a

  1646. couple of

  1647. cases in

  1648. the Bible.

  1649. We see

  1650. Jesus,

  1651. Mark chapter

    Mark 1 chapter mention

  1652. 1,

  1653. goes down

  1654. into the

  1655. water when

  1656. he comes

  1657. back up.

  1658. It's

  1659. possible,

  1660. and many

  1661. paedo-baptists

  1662. argue,

  1663. that he

  1664. simply walked

  1665. down to

  1666. the water.

  1667. That's where

  1668. the water

  1669. was at.

  1670. He walked

  1671. down to

  1672. it.

  1673. He walked

  1674. back up.

  1675. Maybe he

  1676. was standing

  1677. in the

  1678. water.

  1679. Possibly

  1680. it was

  1681. a little

  1682. bit easier

  1683. to sprinkle

  1684. in that

  1685. way.

  1686. But the

  1687. word

  1688. baptizo

  1689. means to

  1690. dunk,

  1691. dunk

  1692. repeatedly,

  1693. or to

  1694. drown.

  1695. And to

  1696. add,

  1697. to heap

  1698. upon that,

  1699. Martin

  1700. Luther,

  1701. again,

  1702. our famed

  1703. Protestant

  1704. Reformer,

  1705. said,

  1706. in the

  1707. primitive

  1708. church,

  1709. baptism

  1710. was a

  1711. total

  1712. immersion,

  1713. or burial,

  1714. as it

  1715. were.

  1716. John

  1717. Calvin,

  1718. Presbyterian,

  1719. says,

  1720. baptizo

  1721. signifies

  1722. to

  1723. immerse.

  1724. And it

  1725. is certain

  1726. that

  1727. immersion

  1728. was the

  1729. practice

  1730. of the

  1731. primitive

  1732. church.

  1733. Philip

  1734. Sheff,

  1735. a 19th

  1736. century

  1737. Presbyterian

  1738. theologian

  1739. and church

  1740. historian,

  1741. said,

  1742. immersion

  1743. was

  1744. unquestionably

  1745. the original

  1746. form of

  1747. baptism.

  1748. So somewhere

  1749. along the

  1750. way,

  1751. somewhere

  1752. throughout

  1753. history,

  1754. someone

  1755. figured it

  1756. out and

  1757. got it

  1758. right and

  1759. got it

  1760. better than

  1761. the early

  1762. church,

  1763. seemed to

  1764. understand it,

  1765. even apart

  1766. from what

  1767. the very

  1768. word

  1769. itself

  1770. means.

  1771. So I

  1772. think it

  1773. confuses our

  1774. belief in

  1775. the sufficienting

  1776. of scripture.

  1777. I think it

  1778. confuses the

  1779. nature of

  1780. the church.

  1781. I think it

  1782. confuses the

  1783. meaning of

  1784. believers'

  1785. baptism.

  1786. I think for

  1787. all these

  1788. reasons,

  1789. while it's

  1790. not the

  1791. gospel,

  1792. it's an

  1793. obedient

  1794. response

  1795. to the

  1796. gospel.

  1797. What are we

  1798. commanded to

  1799. do in the

  1800. Great

  1801. Commission?

  1802. Go and

  1803. make

  1804. disciples of

  1805. all nations,

  1806. baptizing them

  1807. teaching them

  1808. all that I

  1809. have commanded

  1810. you.

  1811. This is no

  1812. different.

  1813. This is a

  1814. doctrine that

  1815. should not

  1816. be neglected.

  1817. This is

  1818. something that

  1819. you should

  1820. find out

  1821. what you

  1822. believe.

  1823. Search the

  1824. scriptures for

  1825. it.

  1826. I hope I've

  1827. made a case

  1828. for you to

  1829. be a

  1830. credo-baptist

  1831. today.

  1832. Wrap your

  1833. hands around

  1834. it.

  1835. Fellowship

  1836. with those

  1837. who agree

  1838. with you

  1839. because we

  1840. honor the

  1841. gospel when

  1842. we do so.

  1843. why would

  1844. we believe

  1845. in a

  1846. doctrine

  1847. that's not

  1848. anywhere

  1849. explicitly

  1850. taught in

  1851. the

  1852. scriptures?

  1853. As I've

  1854. argued,

  1855. cannot be

  1856. arrived at

  1857. by plain

  1858. reason and

  1859. that confuses

  1860. so much.

  1861. It is a

  1862. precious

  1863. ordinance.

  1864. If you

  1865. have not

  1866. been baptized

  1867. as a

  1868. believer,

  1869. you should

  1870. do so.

  1871. What a

  1872. wonderful

  1873. thing to

  1874. celebrate in

  1875. with the

  1876. church of

  1877. God.

  1878. What God

  1879. has done

  1880. in your

  1881. life.

  1882. His

  1883. initiative,

  1884. His

  1885. work,

  1886. His

  1887. accomplishment,

  1888. if you

  1889. don't know

  1890. where you

  1891. stand on

  1892. this,

  1893. if you're

  1894. shaky on

  1895. the matter,

  1896. study your

  1897. Bible and

  1898. pray that

  1899. God would

  1900. reveal the

  1901. truth to

  1902. you.

  1903. If you

  1904. come out

  1905. at the

  1906. end of

  1907. that as

  1908. a

  1909. paedo-baptist,

  1910. I will

  1911. give you

  1912. a big

  1913. hug.

  1914. We can

  1915. fellowship

  1916. with one

  1917. another in

  1918. reaching this

  1919. community.

  1920. We can

  1921. preach the

  1922. gospel side

  1923. by side.

  1924. I will

  1925. link arms

  1926. with you

  1927. in so

  1928. many

  1929. respects,

  1930. but you

  1931. shouldn't

  1932. be part

  1933. of a

  1934. Baptist

  1935. church.

  1936. You

  1937. just

  1938. shouldn't.

  1939. Let's

  1940. pray

  1941. together.

  1942. Let's

  1943. pray together.

  1944. Let's

  1945. pray together.

  1946. Let's

  1947. pray together.

  1948. Let's

  1949. pray together.
