  1. Continuing our verse-by-verse exposition of the Gospel of Mark.

  2. ! And last week we dealt with verses 17-31 in some part,

  3. ! And this week we're going to look at the other part, the second part of this text.

  4. Let's begin by reading it.

  5. Beginning at verse 17 of chapter 10.

  6. And as he was setting out on his journey, a man ran up and knelt before him and asked him,

  7. Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?

  8. And Jesus said to him, Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone.

  9. You know the commandments. Do not murder. Do not commit adultery. Do not steal. Do not bear false witness.

  10. Do not defraud. Honor your father and mother.

  11. And he said to him, Teacher, all these I have kept from my youth.

  12. And Jesus said, looking at him, I'm sorry, Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him,

  13. You lack one thing. Go sell all that you have and give to the poor,

  14. and you will have treasure in heaven. And come, follow me.

  15. Disheartened by the saying, he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.

  16. And Jesus looked around and said to his disciples,

  17. How difficult it will be for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God.

  18. And the disciples were amazed at his words.

  19. But Jesus said to them again, Children, how difficult it is to enter the kingdom of God.

  20. It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.

  21. And they were exceedingly astonished and said to him,

  22. Then who can be saved?

  23. Jesus looked at them and said, With man it is impossible, but not with God,

  24. for all things are possible with God.

  25. Peter began to say to him, See, we have left everything and followed you.

  26. Jesus said,

  27. Truly I say to you, there is no one who has left houses or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands for my sake and for the gospel,

  28. who will not receive a hundredfold now in this time houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands with persecutions and in the age to come eternal life.

  29. But many who are first will be last and the last first.

  30. This is God's word to us, written for his glory and our good.

  31. We would all do well to listen to it in order to believe its promises and obey its commands.

  32. Let's pray together.

  33. Father, I have no good thing in me apart from you.

  34. The gifting that we would call natural only has its proper effect when you work powerfully in me.

  35. The gifts that you have given me were ultimately given for the church,

  36. and so I would pray that you would use them this morning.

  37. Use me beyond my giftedness to speak your word with clarity and conviction to your people.

  38. Father, we would ask this morning that you would have the word properly work in our hearts,

  39. convict us of sin, turn us to repentance and further belief.

  40. Make us this morning long for Christ all the more as we hear the preaching of your word.

  41. And we pray this in Christ's name. Amen.

  42. Now, as I mentioned, this is part two of us dealing with this text.

  43. Last week we dealt with the more evangelistic aspect of the text.

  44. You remember that we have here, aptly subtitled in most of your copies of the word,

  45. the rich young man or the rich young ruler,

  46. a man who comes up and interrupts Jesus as he's setting out on his journey,

  47. his journey towards Jerusalem.

  48. We're in the months leading up to his crucifixion and subsequent resurrection.

  49. And he's trying to pack in the last bit of teaching that the disciples need to receive,

  50. the things that he's trying to build into them that he promised he would bring to their remembrance

  51. by the power of the Spirit on the day of Pentecost.

  52. So he's setting out on this journey and he's interrupted.

  53. We get from the context of the parallel passages in Luke chapter 18 and in Matthew chapter 19

Luke 18 chapter mention Matthew 19 chapter mention

  54. that he's this rich young ruler, likely a ruler of the synagogue,

  55. which would have been a very esteemed religious position.

  56. As a young man, he would have had to be incredibly pious by the culture standards

  57. to be able to hold this position at that age.

  58. And it was also a position that came with a lot of wealth.

  59. He would have had great possessions.

  60. And we see that in verse 22 of our text.

  61. He had great possessions.

  62. He knows, though, that he's lacking something.

  63. He gets that the equation is not quite completed

  64. as we see him come in an apparent act of humility

  65. and come to Jesus and say,

  66. Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?

  67. And in fact, he runs to him,

  68. which is a thing that rich people did not do in this day,

  69. and he kneels down before him.

  70. But Jesus gives him a curious response.

  71. Most of us would have wanted to just preach the gospel to him,

  72. give him the very clear repent and believe.

  73. But Jesus instead gets at his very heart.

  74. And he knows where this man stands as he calls,

  75. he throws around this term good.

  76. He uses it very flippantly of a man who he knows is a teacher,

  77. but he doesn't know that he's the Son of God.

  78. He does not know that he is the Christ.

  79. And so Jesus sees that his intention is not really a humble intention,

  80. but what he wanted to do was to add to the things that he already had.

  81. He didn't come to him seeking God himself.

  82. He came seeking what could be added to his account.

  83. He wanted to see what he could gain from God.

  84. This is evidence in the way he responds as Jesus tells him the thing he's lacking.

  85. This is what you lack.

  86. The thing that you treasure,

  87. the thing that you are holding so dear to,

  88. is your material possession.

  89. And if you're to worship the one true God,

  90. you have to stop worshiping this thing,

  91. and the command he gives to him is,

  92. therefore, get rid of it.

  93. Prove it.

  94. Prove that you don't worship the things that you have

  95. by giving it away to the poor.

  96. And come follow me.

  97. And the young man we see goes away disheartened.

  98. So we dealt with that primarily last week.

  99. Jesus' evangelistic strategy in this case.

  100. Today we're going to look and see what true wealth is in God's economy.

  101. What true wealth is in God's economy.

  102. Now we have to be really, really careful, I think, when we talk about money.

  103. The scriptures have a lot to say concerning the matter.

  104. And it's very easy to get on the pendulum and swing from one extreme to the other

  105. and not walk the proper balance of the doctrine of money

  106. and how it is we're meant to deal with it as followers of Christ.

  107. Because the Bible does not condemn the right of private property.

  108. The Bible has been used throughout history to make claims of socialism

  109. and more severe forms of the same.

  110. But the Bible doesn't condemn the right of private property

  111. but actually assumes the rightness of it.

  112. In the Ten Commandments, Exodus 20.15 says,

  113. You shall not steal.

  114. Why?

  115. Because those are other people's possessions, not your possessions, right?

  116. They rightly own those things.

  117. Therefore, don't take it from them because it's not yours.

  118. Another wonderful example of this, if you'll turn to Acts chapter 5,

    Acts 5 chapter mention

  119. is the story of Ananias and Sapphira.

  120. This is early days of the church.

  121. And we see at the beginning of chapter 5, verse 1,

  122. But a man named Ananias with his wife Sapphira sold a piece of property.

  123. And with his wife's knowledge, he kept back for himself some of the proceeds

  124. and brought only a part of it and laid it at the apostles' feet.

  125. If we were to stop here, it would seem that the right and proper thing

  126. for all Christians to do is to sell things we have, give to the poor.

  127. I'm going to make a case to that later, but not on this text.

  128. Look at what Peter says in verse 3.

  129. But Peter said, Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit

  130. and to keep back for yourself part of the proceeds of the land?

  131. So the lie here is against God, against the Spirit.

  132. Verse 4, while it remained unsold, did it not remain your own?

  133. It was yours. It was your property.

  134. Was it not yours?

  135. And after it was sold, was it not at your disposal?

  136. Was it not your possession to do with it as you please, is what he's saying?

  137. Why is it that you contrive this deed in your heart?

  138. You have not lied to man, but to God.

  139. We see shortly after, the two of them dropped dead in the presence of Peter.

  140. The issue at hand was not that they didn't give all of the proceeds,

  141. but that they lied about giving all of the proceeds.

  142. That they did this good act to mount on themselves a claim for being so devoted to the early church,

  143. when in fact, they sold it, kept some for themselves, and said,

  144. here's the proceeds from the selling of that land.

  145. So Peter affirms that they had a right to the personal possession.

  146. Now there are other teachings, of course, in the Scriptures about this.

  147. Let's look together at what the Proverbs, just the Proverbs, right?

  148. The challenge of preparing for this is narrowing down what text we're going to use.

  149. Let's look just at the Proverbs together, what they say concerning possessions,

  150. because they both commend the having of wealth

  151. and give strong warning concerning the having of the same wealth.

  152. They do both.

  153. There's a balance struck here.

  154. Proverbs 10, verse 15.

    Proverbs 10:15

  155. A rich man's wealth is his strong city.

  156. The poverty of the poor is their ruin.

  157. So wealth has a place.

  158. It serves a purpose.

  159. It gives to us security.

  160. It is the way in which we deal in the world.

  161. This is what this Proverb is saying.

  162. Proverbs 10, verse 15.

    Proverbs 10:15

  163. However, on the other side of the coin,

  164. Proverbs 18, verse 11,

    Proverbs 18:11

  165. says,

  166. A rich man's wealth is his strong city.

  167. Notice the same phrasing.

  168. And like a high wall in his imagination.

  169. So this Proverbs says that it would seem to those who have wealth

  170. that they are in fact secure

  171. when the reality of it is that their security comes from a higher place.

  172. God uses their wealth as a means for their provision.

  173. So you see the two sides there.

  174. The proper way to think about wealth as a security.

  175. All right.

  176. Again, chapter 10, verse 4.

  177. A slack hand causes poverty,

  178. but the hand of the diligent makes rich.

  179. Here, a positive thing for working hard,

  180. for not being lazy,

  181. because if you are, you will be impoverished.

  182. But if you're to work hard,

  183. you will be rich.

  184. But, Proverbs 11, verse 4,

    Proverbs 11:4

  185. So, we're being commended to be rich.

  186. However, 11, verse 4 says,

  187. but they're not going to profit you in the end.

  188. But righteousness is what delivers us from death.

  189. And the Proverbs go on.

  190. And again and again and again,

  191. the Proverbs are full of encouragements to generosity.

  192. Chapter 19, verse 17.

  193. Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the Lord,

  194. and he will repay him for his deed.

  195. Proverbs 11, verse 24.

    Proverbs 11:24

  196. One gives freely, yet grows all the richer.

  197. Another withholds what he should give,

  198. and only suffers want.

  199. They're being commended to give,

  200. not necessarily to receive monetary wealth,

  201. but that will be richer in another way,

  202. which we'll talk about shortly.

  203. Right?

  204. But the ones who withhold only suffers want.

  205. It's lacking.

  206. Proverbs 28, verse 27.

    Proverbs 28:27

  207. Whoever gives to the poor will not want,

  208. but he who hides his eyes will get many a curse.

  209. So there's a proper balance to strike here,

  210. especially as we look at our text before us today,

  211. and see that Jesus gives a very pointed,

  212. unavoidable command to the rich young ruler.

  213. In his commentary on the Sermon on the Mount,

  214. James Montgomery Boyce,

  215. who was a 20th century Presbyterian pastor,

  216. commentator, as I mentioned,

  217. wrote this,

  218. Now someone will ask,

  219. Aren't we to sell all that we have and give to the poor?

  220. After all, this is how Jesus instructed the rich young ruler.

  221. Boyce writes,

  222. Yes, he did.

  223. But we must also note that he did not say it to Mary or Martha or Lazarus or to John the Evangelist or to Zebedee.

  224. He said it to the rich young ruler because his chief obstruction to a life of following Christ lay in his possessions.

  225. He proved that by turning away.

  226. For such a person,

  227. and there are many today,

  228. don't catch,

  229. miss that phrase,

  230. for such a person,

  231. and there are many today,

  232. many in this room,

  233. the loss of their possessions would be the most significant blessing of their lives.

  234. The best thing they could do would be to give them away.

  235. This does not mean, however,

  236. that possessions in themselves are wrong.

  237. It's the people and the way we use the possessions that's wrong,

  238. not the possessions themselves.

  239. They're amoral.

  240. Or, for that matter,

  241. that poverty is a particularly blessed form of Christianity.

  242. God has not called us to poverty,

  243. but he has told us how we should deal with our wealth.

  244. In a very particular way.

  245. So let's look together first in our text at the poverty of possessions.

  246. Beginning in verse 23.

  247. Jesus looks around after this encounter with the rich young ruler,

  248. and he makes some very big statements.

  249. How difficult it will be for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom.

  250. Right?

  251. They're amazed by this.

  252. Verse 24.

  253. Children, how difficult it is to enter the kingdom of God.

  254. It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle

  255. than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.

  256. He keeps raising this.

  257. He says in verse 24 how difficult it is,

  258. and he goes on to use this analogy of a camel going through the eye of a needle,

  259. which was a popular saying of the day,

  260. and it meant, simply, it's impossible.

  261. There are many people that try to get around this,

  262. many commentators that make up all sorts of things

  263. about there potentially being in Jerusalem.

  264. A gate called the needle gate that they took camels through

  265. that they just barely fit through.

  266. There's no archaeological evidence of that.

  267. It's absolutely insane to think that anyone would try to stuff a camel

  268. through a small gate rather than taking them through the big gates

  269. that were conveniently located around the exterior of the city.

  270. No, what he is saying is that it's impossible.

  271. That is what he is saying to them in our text so far.

  272. Why is it particularly impossible for wealthy people to enter the kingdom of God,

  273. which is his address?

  274. And that is because it is easy to love the things that you have.

  275. It's particularly easy to love the things that you hold in your hands.

  276. You can love things either way.

  277. Don't miss that.

  278. You can love and worship stuff and not have much at all.

  279. But it's especially easy when it's in your hands to love it.

  280. A number of years ago, I don't remember how many exactly,

  281. but we were preaching something similar about wealth

  282. and holding on to material things in this world.

  283. I've come to a place in my life where I'm pretty open-handed with the things that I have.

  284. And I can't say to you this morning that I always am.

  285. I struggle just like you do, loving stuff too much sometimes.

  286. But for the most part, I'm pretty open-handed.

  287. I have plenty of things taken from me.

  288. I've lost things.

  289. I've come to realize that my goal is to be eternal and not temporal here.

  290. But there's one thing in this world that it would just break my heart to lose,

  291. and that's my wedding band.

  292. My wife gave me this wedding band.

  293. I really can't replace it.

  294. I could get another wedding band, sure,

  295. but it wouldn't be this wedding band.

  296. I really, really like this.

  297. It's not worth a ton of money, right?

  298. Maybe you could sell it for $100, right?

  299. But it's really precious to me.

  300. And after we had gotten done with this sermon,

  301. I talked quite a bit about holding so tightly to Jesus

  302. that we didn't have anything else, no other room in our hands for anything else.

  303. We went out, and it was the 4th of July,

  304. with her parents out onto the lake to watch the fireworks.

  305. And we pulled around the front of this island close to the dam

  306. where the waves are three feet tall because everyone's out on the lake

  307. renting their massive houseboats and causing quite a commotion out there.

  308. And her dad, who has this old pontoon boat and doesn't have a proper anchor

  309. that drags and catches you in the sand when you're trying to sit in those kinds of ways,

  310. you boat people know what I'm talking about,

  311. but instead had an old set of barbells with a rope tied to it,

  312. which would roll along the bottom because they were round,

  313. was trying to get us off the bank, and we were smashing into the bank,

  314. and so I thought it'd be helpful.

  315. I hopped up on the back of the boat, pulled the rope up,

  316. and gave it a good heave-ho out there.

  317. And the rope actually made my ring spin on my finger,

  318. and it spun straight up right off my finger

  319. and then dropped, I mean, an inch from the edge of the boat.

  320. And I was standing on the edge, I mean, you know, phone-in pocket and all that,

  321. and I didn't catch it, and it went into the bottom of the lake.

  322. I promptly threw everything out of my pockets and jumped in after it,

  323. but the water was so murky, and I'm really not a fantastic swimmer,

  324. that I spent 20 just desperate minutes trying to find my ring on the bottom of the lake

  325. and finally had to say, well, oh well.

  326. And as I gave up and got out, climbed up out of the water onto the boat,

  327. the thought that went through my mind was, prove it.

  328. Everything that I had been saying that very morning,

  329. God was saying to me, show it to be true.

  330. Even your wedding band, you have to be okay.

  331. With this.

  332. Praise God, two days later, actually it took me a couple days to kind of settle on it all

  333. and say, well, it is just a thing.

  334. It is temporal, right?

  335. It's fading away like everything else in this world.

  336. It is, in fact, a temporal thing.

  337. Just about the time I had become okay with that,

  338. her dad had really graciously gone back out with a triathlete from his church

  339. and a much better swimmer than myself is the point I'm making,

  340. and he dove a hundred times and found my ring.

  341. So I got it back.

  342. I got to tell the story the next Sunday, and I had it off my finger as I'm telling the story,

  343. so people are having heart attacks, and then I put it back on my finger.

  344. So this is the ring, still on my finger.

  345. Here, I have it back.

  346. Right?

  347. But are we willing to let go of all those things that we have?

  348. And it's just so easy when it's in your hands to love it.

  349. To absolutely love it.

  350. And to not want to give it up for the sake of Christ.

  351. 1 John 2, verse 15-17 says this,

    1 John 2:15–17

  352. Do not love the world or the things in the world.

  353. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

  354. For all that is in the world, the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life,

  355. is not from the Father, but is from the world.

  356. And the world is passing away along with its desires.

  357. But whoever does the will of God abides forever.

  358. And a lot of people want to stop at this point.

  359. And they want to say,

  360. Yes, it's okay to have things as long as I don't worship those things.

  361. And if I were observing a life that seemed properly oriented,

  362. that in all ways said,

  363. I love Jesus more than these things,

  364. I would say,

  365. Amen, I think you've got it right.

  366. I think you're walking the balance just so.

  367. But most of the people who will say that,

  368. don't live that way.

  369. By all appearances,

  370. they love their stuff much more than they love Jesus.

  371. John goes on to say in 1 John, in chapter 3, verse 17-18,

  372. But if anyone has the world's goods,

  373. and sees his brother in need,

  374. yet closes his heart against him,

  375. how does God's love abide in him?

  376. Little children,

  377. let us not love in word or talk,

  378. but in deed and truth.

  379. We live in an incredibly broken world.

  380. Sin is ravaging across the face of our planet.

  381. One of the major ways it does this is in poverty.

  382. And there's a lot of factors that go into poverty

  383. there's a lot of factors that go into bringing people out of poverty.

  384. But it's a reality.

  385. It exists.

  386. And we all know that it exists.

  387. We very conveniently hold poverty at an arm's length

  388. because we pay taxes

  389. and we have social welfare programs in place in our country,

  390. which we all know are horrible failures.

  391. They don't do the work

  392. because they're not accompanied by love and truth.

  393. Just money.

  394. It's not accompanied by love and truth.

  395. There's all kinds of statistics out there

  396. about poverty in the world.

  397. I'm just going to give you a couple.

  398. Gallup did a world poll

  399. where they actually asked individuals these questions.

  400. And of course, it was a broad study.

  401. I think you guys all know how statistics work, though.

  402. But they say,

  403. self-reporting,

  404. 33% worldwide say they don't have money for food.

  405. They're lacking money for food.

  406. 38% say their living standards are poor.

  407. 39% say they are in difficulty.

  408. So there's a big issue out there of poverty.

  409. And the way in which we can go and minister and love on people in difficult situations,

  410. the tool that's used to accomplish that is financial.

  411. The means are necessary to get these types of things accomplished.

  412. And we live in a world,

  413. American evangelicals give on average 2% of their income.

  414. 2%.

  415. Which means there's probably many who don't give at all,

  416. and there's a lot that give way beyond.

  417. But the average, it averages out.

  418. American evangelicals,

  419. those who say that we follow Christ,

  420. and we follow Christ in such a way

  421. that we know we need to share our faith.

  422. That we want to bring people into the church.

  423. That this is our goal.

  424. The Great Commission means something to us.

  425. Give 2% of their income.

  426. And they live on the rest.

  427. We live in a nation that's indebted.

  428. The average American household

  429. has $15,000 in credit card debt.

  430. $15,000.

  431. So not only,

  432. we would include Christians in that category,

  433. not only do we only give 2%,

  434. but we live beyond our means just the same.

  435. It's a sickness.

  436. And it's the sickness of our souls.

  437. Now in these things,

  438. just writing checks and throwing money around

  439. is not the solution.

  440. And I'm not suggesting that.

  441. We don't have time today

  442. to talk about a proper methodology of giving

  443. and therefore helping issues like this.

  444. It's not the time for that type of thing.

  445. However,

  446. there's a high calling for us in Christ

  447. to give,

  448. not just materially,

  449. but also of our time,

  450. of our energy.

  451. To really love people out of these situations,

  452. we're going to have to enter into relationships with them

  453. and love them with the truth.

  454. We've pursued them with everything that we have.

  455. Another case by Paul in 1 Timothy 6.

  456. He instructs at the end of his letter to Timothy,

  457. beginning of verse 17,

  458. As for the rich in this present age,

  459. charge them not to be haughty,

  460. nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches,

  461. but on God,

  462. who richly provides us with everything to enjoy.

  463. You've probably heard this verse in your life.

  464. It's another one that likes to be flagged,

  465. heralded as a way of saying,

  466. See,

  467. I can have stuff.

  468. The stuff is good.

  469. The stuff is for me to enjoy.

  470. That's why God gave it to me.

  471. He richly provided it for me to enjoy.

  472. I just can't hope in it.

  473. I've got to hope in Him

  474. and not in Him.

  475. I've got to worship the giver,

  476. not the gift.

  477. But read on.

  478. Context here.

  479. What's the instruction that Timothy's meant to give to the rich?

  480. They are in fact rich.

  481. Be rich.

  482. But what are you to do with that?

  483. Verse 18,

  484. They are to do good.

  485. To be rich in good works.

  486. To be generous and ready to share.

  487. Which necessitates sharing.

  488. Not just ready,

  489. but sharing.

  490. You're ready to share so you do.

  491. Verse 19,

  492. Thus,

  493. storing up treasure for themselves

  494. as a good foundation

  495. for the future

  496. so that they may take hold of that

  497. which is truly life.

  498. So does God give us things to enjoy?

  499. Yes.

  500. He does

  501. by enjoying Him.

  502. By being engaged

  503. in His kingdom work.

  504. He gives money

  505. to people.

  506. And let's face it,

  507. even you college students in the room,

  508. we are wealthy.

  509. We are wealthy by the world's standards.

  510. And in fact,

  511. most of you,

  512. socioeconomically,

  513. from your background,

  514. are wealthy by American standards as well.

  515. You're doing better

  516. than a lot of people.

  517. We have

  518. so that we can enjoy Christ.

  519. So we can get the thing

  520. that's ultimately enjoyable.

  521. Wouldn't God be a mean God

  522. if He is the greatest thing

  523. that He could possibly give us?

  524. Himself,

  525. the Creator,

  526. and instead He says,

  527. Here, go play with these toys.

  528. Don't spend time with me.

  529. Don't be around me.

  530. Don't be involved in my work.

  531. But instead,

  532. go be distracted by cars

  533. and fancy vacations

  534. and clothes

  535. and stupid jewelry.

  536. He'd be a horribly mean God

  537. if He doesn't give us Himself.

  538. Dietrich Braunhofer,

  539. an early 20th century

  540. German Lutheran pastor,

  541. theologian,

  542. who was an anti-Nazi dissident.

  543. He was part of a plot

  544. to murder,

  545. to assassinate Hitler.

  546. He was also a martyr.

  547. He said,

  548. Earthly goods are given

  549. to be used,

  550. not to be collected.

  551. Hoarding is idolatry.

  552. Now there's some

  553. in our world,

  554. certainly in our country,

  555. that teach

  556. that a camel can squeeze

  557. through the eye of a needle.

  558. Jesus is very clear about this.

  559. It's impossible.

  560. A camel cannot squeeze

  561. through the eye of a needle,

  562. but many teach

  563. that a camel can.

  564. It's most commonly called

  565. the prosperous.

  566. prosperity gospel.

  567. And it is a special type

  568. of devilish heresy.

  569. It's being exported now

  570. from our country

  571. into other countries,

  572. into incredibly impoverished countries.

  573. Proponents of it

  574. are false teachers.

  575. They're absolutely false teachers

  576. who say true things at times

  577. which only proves

  578. that the devil does in fact

  579. come as an angel of light.

  580. Joel Osteen,

  581. Joyce Meyer,

  582. T.D. Jakes,

  583. Benny Hinn,

  584. Creflo Dollar,

  585. to name a few of them.

  586. Heretics,

  587. cut off from the faith.

  588. We ought not listen

  589. to such people.

  590. If I just shattered

  591. your world

  592. with any of these names,

  593. please come talk to me.

  594. Stop.

  595. Stop listening

  596. to these teachers.

  597. They are false.

  598. They're leading you astray.

  599. And the shame is

  600. that it's more subversive,

  601. but I think much

  602. of this teaching

  603. has crept into

  604. a lot of our

  605. evangelical churches

  606. as well,

  607. primarily in the form

  608. of silence.

  609. We just don't talk

  610. about it that much.

  611. People are afraid

  612. to get into

  613. that area

  614. of people's lives

  615. because they know

  616. the idol

  617. that it is.

  618. As Paul says,

  619. I seek not

  620. what is yours,

  621. but you.

  622. I want you

  623. to have the greatest

  624. and highest joy.

  625. I want you

  626. to be caught up

  627. in the mission of God

  628. and not sit around

  629. playing with toys.

  630. I seek not

  631. what is yours,

  632. but you.

  633. The Bible's not

  634. silent on this matter

  635. and neither

  636. should we be.

  637. I want to encourage you

  638. to begin to read

  639. your scriptures

  640. with the idea

  641. of money in mind

  642. and just see

  643. all the many places

  644. it's dealt with.

  645. And this is the case

  646. because we're all

  647. going to encounter it.

  648. This is not a situation

  649. that's unique

  650. to any of us.

  651. Not all of us

  652. will walk through cancer

  653. in our lives,

  654. but we're all

  655. going to deal

  656. with money

  657. and we all

  658. need to deal

  659. with money

  660. rightly.

  661. Now as it concerns

  662. false teachers,

  663. whether so

  664. out in the open

  665. or more closeted

  666. on the matter,

  667. take some courage

  668. in this.

  669. 2 Peter 2,

  670. 1-3

  671. But false prophets

  672. also arose

  673. among the people

  674. just as there

  675. will be false teachers

  676. among you

  677. who will secretly

  678. bring in destructive

  679. heresies,

  680. even denying the

  681. master who bought them,

  682. bringing upon themselves

  683. swift destruction.

  684. Not swift by my standard,

  685. but swift by God's standard.

  686. And many will follow

  687. their sensuality

  688. and because of them

  689. the way of truth

  690. will be blasphemed.

  691. And in their greed

  692. they will exploit you

  693. with false words.

  694. Their condemnation

  695. from long ago

  696. is not idle

  697. and their destruction

  698. is not asleep.

  699. There will be damnation

  700. for people

  701. who lead people away

  702. from the true and living God

  703. to worship things.

  704. Who say to them

  705. that if you add Jesus

  706. to your life,

  707. you will gain

  708. materially.

  709. No.

  710. You will gain spiritually.

  711. You will have joy

  712. abounding.

  713. You will have peace

  714. in Him,

  715. but it does not come

  716. with money.

  717. If you have been

  718. given things,

  719. you have been given

  720. things to get more

  721. of Him.

  722. To get more of Him.

  723. The gospel's not cheap.

  724. It's costly.

  725. Jim Elliott,

  726. famous missionary,

  727. Christian martyred

  728. by the people

  729. he went to go

  730. share the gospel with,

  731. famously said,

  732. He is no fool

  733. who gives what

  734. he cannot keep

  735. to gain that

  736. which he cannot lose.

  737. Are we fools,

  738. beloved?

  739. Jesus in today's text

  740. is really just elaborating

  741. on the general call

  742. He made to the crowd

  743. in Mark chapter 8,

    Mark 8:34–37

  744. verse 34 through 37.

  745. You remember this?

  746. If anyone would come

  747. after Me,

  748. let him deny himself

  749. and take up his cross

  750. and follow Me.

  751. That is to die.

  752. That is to die

  753. to our own desires.

  754. For whoever would

  755. save his life

  756. will lose it.

  757. But whoever loses

  758. his life for My sake

  759. and the gospel's

  760. will save it.

  761. For what does it

  762. profit a man

  763. to gain the whole world

  764. and forfeit his soul?

  765. For what can a man

  766. give in return

  767. for his soul?

  768. It costs us something

  769. to follow Jesus.

  770. It costs us

  771. our self-determination.

  772. It costs us

  773. our desires.

  774. But praise God,

  775. He makes our desires

  776. into His.

  777. He shapes us

  778. into one who wants

  779. to worship Him,

  780. who wants to give up

  781. these things.

  782. Discipleship is costly.

  783. It asks everything of us.

  784. We are to be men

  785. selling all that we have

  786. to buy a field

  787. and merchants

  788. selling everything

  789. to have the pearl

  790. of surpassing value.

  791. You recall these parables?

  792. Mark chapter 13.

    Mark 13 chapter mention

  793. Back to back,

  794. the kingdom of heaven

  795. is like treasure

  796. hidden in a field

  797. which a man found

  798. and covered up.

  799. Then in his joy

  800. he goes and sells

  801. all that he has

  802. and buys that field.

  803. Jesus is the treasure.

  804. Again,

  805. the kingdom of heaven

  806. is like a merchant

  807. in search of fine pearls

  808. who on finding

  809. one pearl

  810. of great value

  811. went and sold

  812. all that he had

  813. and bought it.

  814. Willing to give up

  815. everything

  816. to have this

  817. greater prize,

  818. this greater treasure.

  819. That's found in Christ.

  820. Now again,

  821. Dietrich Bonhoeffer

  822. to quote,

  823. the previous quote

  824. was from his book

  825. The Cost of Discipleship

  826. that I would really

  827. commend to you.

  828. He talks a lot in there

  829. about cheap grace

  830. versus costly grace

  831. and let me read you

  832. an excerpt

  833. from that book.

  834. Cheap grace,

  835. which is what's being peddled

  836. so often today

  837. in American churches,

  838. means grace sold

  839. on the market

  840. like cheap jacks wears.

  841. The sacraments,

  842. the forgiveness of sin,

  843. and the consolations

  844. of religion

  845. are thrown away

  846. at cut prices.

  847. Grace is represented

  848. as the church's

  849. inexhaustible treasury

  850. from which she showers

  851. blessings with generous hands

  852. without asking questions

  853. or fixing limits.

  854. Grace without price,

  855. grace without cost.

  856. The essence of grace,

  857. we suppose,

  858. is that the account

  859. has been paid in advance

  860. and because it has been paid,

  861. everything can be had

  862. for nothing.

  863. Since the cost

  864. was infinite,

  865. the possibilities

  866. of using and spending it

  867. are infinite.

  868. What would grace be

  869. if it were not cheap?

  870. What he's saying is

  871. the way we tend to think

  872. about grace

  873. is that it's this free gift

  874. and because it's a free gift

  875. bought by Christ,

  876. we can just presume upon it

  877. and presume upon it

  878. and presume upon it.

  879. We can go say

  880. some trivial,

  881. trite little prayer

  882. and never respond.

  883. We can never live

  884. in a different way.

  885. We can never say

  886. God has rescued me.

  887. He's made me a child.

  888. He's put me into his kingdom

  889. and now I'm meant

  890. to live a certain way.

  891. I'm meant to worship him

  892. with everything that I am.

  893. That's cheap grace.

  894. Cheap grace is the preaching

  895. of forgiveness

  896. without requiring repentance.

  897. Baptism without church discipline.

  898. Communion without confection.

  899. Absolution without personal confession.

  900. Cheap grace is grace

  901. without discipleship.

  902. Grace without the cross.

  903. Grace without Jesus Christ

  904. living and incarnate.

  905. Costly grace

  906. is the treasure hidden in the field.

  907. For the sake of it

  908. a man will go and sell

  909. all that he has.

  910. It is the pearl of great price

  911. to buy with the wife

  912. which the merchant

  913. will sell all his goods.

  914. It is the kingly rule

  915. of Christ

  916. over our lives.

  917. For whose sake

  918. a man will pluck out the eye

  919. which causes him to stumble.

  920. It is the call of Jesus Christ

  921. at which the disciple

  922. leaves his nets

  923. and follows him.

  924. Costly grace

  925. is the gospel

  926. which must be sought

  927. again and again.

  928. The gift which must be asked for.

  929. The door at which

  930. a man must knock.

  931. Such grace is costly

  932. because it calls us

  933. to follow.

  934. And it is grace

  935. because it calls us

  936. to follow Jesus Christ.

  937. It is costly

  938. because it costs

  939. a man his life.

  940. And it is grace

  941. because it gives

  942. a man the only true life.

  943. It is costly

  944. because it condemns sin.

  945. And grace

  946. because it justifies

  947. the sinner.

  948. Above all

  949. it is costly

  950. because it cost God

  951. the life of his son.

  952. You were bought

  953. at a price.

  954. And what has cost God

  955. much cannot be cheap

  956. for us.

  957. Above all

  958. it is grace

  959. because God

  960. did not reckon his son

  961. too dear a price

  962. to pay for our life

  963. but delivered him up

  964. for us.

  965. Costly grace

  966. is the incarnation

  967. of God.

  968. God

  969. means something.

  970. It is going to require

  971. things

  972. of us.

  973. Jesus is just

  974. further developing

  975. this idea.

  976. He very soon

  977. in our text

  978. in Mark 10

  979. is going to once again

  980. foretell his death.

  981. And once again

  982. the disciples

  983. are not going to get it.

  984. They have been debating

  985. all along

  986. what does it mean

  987. that Jesus is going to die.

  988. How can this be?

  989. We don't want you

  990. to have the suffering.

  991. We just want you

  992. to have the glory

  993. because we want the glory.

  994. We don't want the suffering.

  995. We don't want to have

  996. to give up anything

  997. to follow you.

  998. We want to be us

  999. like the rich young ruler

1000. to have all that we have

1001. and just add to it.

1002. Just give me a little extra

  1003. for eternal life

  1004. and not be willing

  1005. to give away anything

  1006. to gain it.

  1007. Do you recognize

  1008. that you can have

  1009. all that this world

  1010. has to offer

  1011. every bit of it

  1012. and still be

  1013. impoverished?

  1014. That this life

  1015. is fleeting.

  1016. You're passing through it.

  1017. It's a vapor

  1018. in the wind

  1019. and that your mind

1020. should be set on things

  1021. eternal

  1022. and not those things

  1023. that are temporal.

  1024. Everything you can

  1025. see right now

  1026. besides the souls

  1027. of the people

  1028. you're looking around at

  1029. is finite.

  1030. It's going away.

  1031. It's not infinite.

1032. It will all be turned

  1033. to dust one day.

1034. It will all be tested

  1035. by fire.

  1036. Do you recognize

  1037. that wealth

1038. has been given to you

  1039. for the sake

  1040. of eternal joy

  1041. and not just

  1042. your temporal joy?

1043. If Jesus were to say

  1044. to you,

  1045. you lack one thing,

  1046. go sell all

  1047. that you have

1048. and give to the poor

  1049. and you will have

  1050. treasure in heaven

  1051. and come,

  1052. follow me.

  1053. Would you go away

  1054. disheartened

  1055. or would you gladly

  1056. trade it all

  1057. to gain him?

  1058. Now in response

  1059. to this,

  1060. verse 26,

  1061. the disciples

  1062. are exceedingly

  1063. astonished.

  1064. Exceedingly

  1065. astonished.

  1066. Then,

  1067. who can be saved?

  1068. And we have to

  1069. understand why

  1070. they were exceedingly

  1071. astonished.

  1072. The common

  1073. teaching of this day,

  1074. and I'll thank

  1075. John MacArthur

  1076. for spelling this out

  1077. in his sermon

  1078. on this very text

  1079. for me.

  1080. Saved me a ton

  1081. of time.

  1082. The common

  1083. misconception of the day,

  1084. which was from

  1085. the rabbis,

  1086. the teachers

  1087. that had worked

  1088. through time

  1089. over the previous

  1090. 400 years,

  1091. is that the way

  1092. in which you

  1093. gained redemption

  1094. is through the

  1095. giving of alms,

  1096. which was giving

  1097. to the poor.

  1098. This is the thing

  1099. that Jesus has

  1100. asked them to do.

  1101. They said that

  1102. with alms,

  1103. one purchases

  1104. his redemption.

  1105. A couple of

  1106. examples for you.

  1107. One writing taken

  1108. from Tobit

  1109. says this,

  1110. It is good

  1111. to do alms

  1112. rather than

  1113. to treasure up

  1114. gold for alms,

  1115. deliver from death,

  1116. and this will

  1117. purge away

  1118. every sin.

  1119. Syriac 3

  1120. says,

  1121. alms will atone

  1122. for sin.

  1123. The Talmud

  1124. says,

  1125. almsgiving

  1126. is more excellent

  1127. than all offerings

  1128. and is equal

  1129. to the whole law.

  1130. If you give

  1131. to the poor,

  1132. then this is

  1133. an equal thing.

  1134. And who was

  1135. most able

1136. to give to the poor?

  1137. For the rich.

  1138. Here,

  1139. even Jesus

  1140. gave the command

  1141. to this young man

  1142. which he was

  1143. unwilling to do.

  1144. But what Jesus

  1145. was telling him

  1146. to do

  1147. is not to do

  1148. a good work

  1149. that he might

  1150. gain righteousness,

  1151. that he would

  1152. have his redemption,

  1153. that he would

  1154. be justified

  1155. before God

  1156. because of the action.

  1157. He was telling him

1158. to give up an idol

  1159. and to worship

  1160. Jesus,

  1161. to follow him.

  1162. That's the key

  1163. distinction here.

  1164. It's a matter

  1165. of the heart.

  1166. Not that we go

  1167. through some works

  1168. in order to gain

  1169. our salvation

  1170. which is an impossibility.

  1171. None of us

1172. can keep the whole law.

  1173. You can't do it.

1174. Don't try to amass works

1175. in order to gain salvation.

  1176. Be saved,

  1177. respond to the gospel,

  1178. and then do works

1179. as a response to it.

  1180. The disciples got this,

1181. but they got it wrongly.

  1182. They went too far

  1183. with the cultural understanding.

  1184. And as such,

  1185. Jesus broadens

  1186. the impossibility.

  1187. Look at him

  1188. broaden it out.

  1189. They say,

1190. then who can be saved?

  1191. Jesus looked at them

  1192. and said,

1193. with man it is impossible,

  1194. but not with God.

  1195. He doesn't say

  1196. with rich men

  1197. it is impossible,

  1198. but not with God.

  1199. He says,

1200. with man it is impossible.

  1201. You cannot save yourself.

  1202. God can save you

  1203. if he so desires.

1204. If you have some working

  1205. in your heart

1206. to respond to the gospel,

1207. see it as the Spirit's work

  1208. on your behalf

  1209. and respond to it.

1210. Jesus says to them in this

  1211. that man is spiritually

  1212. impoverished,

1213. whether they're rich or poor,

  1214. they're spiritually impoverished.

1215. We have nothing to offer God

1216. for the dimptive of our souls.

1217. This is why we need grace.

  1218. It's why we need a Savior.

  1219. We cannot save ourselves.

1220. That's the bad news side

  1221. of the gospel

1222. which makes the good news

  1223. so good

  1224. because Jesus did it

  1225. on our behalf.

  1226. He paid the debt

  1227. for us

1228. that if we would believe in Him,

1229. we would have eternal life.

1230. Paul puts it this way

  1231. in Ephesians 2,

    Ephesians 2:8

  1232. verse 8, 9,

1233. grace given as a gift to us.

1234. For by grace you have been saved

  1235. through faith.

1236. And this is not your own doing.

1237. It's the gift of God,

1238. not a result of work

1239. so that no one may boast.

  1240. So proper living

  1241. is a response

  1242. to the work

  1243. that God has wrought

  1244. in our hearts,

  1245. the way in which

  1246. He has changed us.

  1247. So we looked at

  1248. the poverty of possessions.

  1249. Let's look now together

  1250. quickly at the possessions

  1251. of poverty.

  1252. Verse 28,

1253. Peter began to say to Him,

1254. and I really love this

1255. just because I'm musing about it.

1256. Mark seems to cut Him off.

  1257. Peter was always

  1258. the wordy one.

  1259. You see Him constantly

  1260. interrupting

  1261. and opening His mouth

  1262. when He shouldn't have.

  1263. So He just says,

1264. Peter began to say to Him,

1265. see if we have left everything

  1266. and followed you.

  1267. I would imagine

  1268. that He went on

  1269. to elaborate

  1270. on that point.

1271. And Jesus responds to Him

1272. with His rather amazing truth.

1273. Truly I say to you,

  1274. no one is left,

  1275. and I won't read all those

1276. for the sake of time,

  1277. for my sake

  1278. and for the gospel.

  1279. Not left those things

1280. that they might gain more things,

  1281. but for the sake

  1282. of Jesus Christ

  1283. and the good news

  1284. of Jesus Christ

  1285. who will not receive

  1286. a hundredfold

  1287. now in this time

  1288. all those things

  1289. with persecutions

1290. and in the age to come

  1291. eternal life.

1292. He says to us again,

1293. but many who are first

  1294. will be last

  1295. and the last first.

1296. The one who wants to leave

  1297. might become a servant.

1298. The one who wants to leave

  1299. the gospel of all.

1300. Look at this proper response

  1301. of Peter.

  1302. John chapter 6

    John 6 chapter mention

  1303. beginning in verse 65.

  1304. Jesus just said

  1305. some very difficult things

  1306. to the larger group

  1307. of disciples.

  1308. He's talked about

  1309. drinking His blood

1310. and feasting on His flesh

1311. and they just don't get it.

1312. And He says to them,

1313. not all of you believe.

1314. Not all of you believe.

1315. No one can come to Me

1316. unless the Father sent Me

  1317. and draws them.

1318. He's using this type of language.

  1319. Verse 65.

1320. This is why I told you

1321. that no one can come to Me

1322. unless it is granted Him

  1323. by the Father.

  1324. Verse 66.

  1325. After this,

  1326. many of the disciples

  1327. turned back

  1328. and no longer walked

  1329. with Him.

  1330. Verse 67.

1331. So Jesus said to the twelve,

1332. Do you want to go away as well?

1333. Do you also want to leave?

1334. Is this too hard for you?

1335. And Simon Peter answered Him,

1336. Lord, to whom shall we go?

  1337. You have the words

  1338. of eternal life

  1339. and we have believed

1340. and have come to know

1341. that You are the Holy One

  1342. of God.

1343. You can put these texts together.

  1344. We have left everything

  1345. for Your sake.

  1346. Right?

1347. Where are we going to go?

1348. We've left it all behind.

1349. We know that You're the Christ.

  1350. Why would we leave?

1351. Look at some improper responses.

  1352. Luke chapter 9,

    Luke 9 chapter mention

  1353. beginning of verse 57.

  1354. As they,

  1355. Jesus and the disciples,

1356. were going along the road,

  1357. someone said to Him,

  1358. I will follow you

  1359. wherever you go.

1360. And Jesus said to him,

  1361. Foxes have holes

1362. and birds of the air

  1363. have nests,

1364. but the Son of Man

  1365. has nowhere

  1366. to lay His head.

1367. It's presumed at this point

1368. that the man did not follow Him

  1369. because of this saying.

  1370. Verse 59.

  1371. To another,

  1372. He said,

  1373. Follow Me.

  1374. But He said,

1375. Lord, let me first go

  1376. and bury my father.

1377. And Jesus said to him,

  1378. Leave the dead

1379. to bury their own dead.

  1380. But as for you,

  1381. go and proclaim

  1382. the kingdom of God.

  1383. Yet another said,

1384. I will follow you, Lord,

1385. but let me first say farewell

1386. to those at my home.

  1387. Jesus said to him,

1388. No one who puts his hand

  1389. to the plow

  1390. and looks back

1391. is fit for the kingdom of God.

1392. We must set our sights

  1393. fully on Jesus Christ.

  1394. Whatever may come,

  1395. whatever may fall away,

  1396. here you have men

  1397. who are leaving Judaism

  1398. to follow Jesus.

1399. This happens in our day as well.

1400. Many of you college students

  1401. experience this

  1402. with unbelieving parents.

  1403. You become strange

  1404. to your parents.

  1405. Your parents don't want

1406. to spend time with you

  1407. the way they did.

1408. The decisions that you're making

  1409. are counter-cultural.

  1410. They don't want you

  1411. to enter the ministry.

1412. They want you to have a career.

1413. They want you to make money.

1414. They want you to take care of them

  1415. in their old age.

1416. It puts you at odds with them.

1417. This is a common thing.

1418. The gospel often divides people

  1419. because people become devoted

  1420. to Christ

1421. and others just don't get that.

1422. What are we to do with that?

1423. He gives us a promise.

  1424. This is the way

1425. in which we leave behind

  1426. houses, brothers, sisters,

  1427. mother, father, children, lands.

1428. He says he'll give to us

1429. a hundredfold in this day.

1430. How is that the case?

1431. What does he mean by that?

  1432. What he means

1433. is that in this age

1434. he'll give us the church.

  1435. He'll deliver us

  1436. into a community,

  1437. a faith family,

1438. that we might love each other

  1439. the way in which

  1440. a family is meant

  1441. to love each other.

  1442. Praise God,

  1443. many of you have

  1444. believing parents

1445. and this has not been

  1446. the case for you.

1447. But we as a church

  1448. need to do better

  1449. at loving each other

  1450. like a family loves.

  1451. Because there are people

  1452. amongst us

1453. that are hurting in that way

  1454. who need spiritual fathers

  1455. and mothers

  1456. and brothers

  1457. and sisters.

  1458. How do you have

  1459. houses and lands?

1460. Because you have my house

1461. and you have my lands.

  1462. Right?

  1463. You come over

1464. and you can eat with me.

1465. You need a place to crash?

  1466. Let me know.

  1467. Not just me.

  1468. There's other people

  1469. in this church too

  1470. that have houses

  1471. and lands.

  1472. I don't want to run

  1473. a bed and breakfast.

  1474. Look at an example

1475. of this from the scriptures.

  1476. Acts 2

  1477. is after the day

  1478. of Pentecost.

  1479. We have seen

  1480. thousands,

  1481. 3,000 is the number

  1482. I believe in verse 41

  1483. recorded of people

1484. added to the early church

1485. and most of these people

  1486. would have been pilgrims

  1487. from Jewish settlements.

  1488. They would have traveled

  1489. to Jerusalem

  1490. and they didn't want

  1491. to go home.

  1492. The only church

  1493. at the time

1494. was this group of people,

  1495. these thousands of people

  1496. that were gathered

  1497. in Jerusalem.

1498. They didn't want to go back

  1499. to their towns

1500. where there were no Christians

  1501. and so they lingered.

  1502. They stuck around

  1503. for a little while.

  1504. We see beginning

  1505. in verse 42

  1506. and they,

  1507. all these new Christians,

  1508. devoted themselves

  1509. to the apostles' teaching

  1510. and the fellowship,

1511. to the breaking of bread

  1512. and the prayers

  1513. and all came upon

  1514. every soul

  1515. and many wonders

1516. and signs were being done

  1517. through the apostles

  1518. and all who believed

  1519. were together

  1520. and had all things

  1521. in common

  1522. and they were selling

  1523. their possessions

  1524. and belongings

  1525. and distributing

  1526. the proceeds to all

  1527. as any had need

  1528. and day by day

  1529. attending the temple

  1530. together

  1531. and breaking bread

  1532. in their homes

  1533. they received their food

1534. with glad and generous hearts

  1535. praising God

  1536. and having favor

  1537. with all people

  1538. and the Lord added

  1539. to their number

  1540. day by day

1541. those who were being saved.

1542. So you see that these people

  1543. crashed on the couch.

1544. They wanted to stick around

1545. and they were glad to have them.

1546. All these new baby Christians

  1547. got together

1548. and they were so hungry

  1549. to hear the teaching

  1550. of the apostles

1551. to know more about Jesus Christ

1552. that they got really practical

  1553. about it

  1554. and they shared things

  1555. and they sold lands.

  1556. Ananias and Sapphira,

1557. the failures in this thing,

1558. but that's what they were about doing

  1559. in this process

  1560. of providing for

  1561. and being a family

  1562. together.

1563. So for those of us,

  1564. for those of you

  1565. who are leaving behind

  1566. these types of things

  1567. to follow Jesus,

1568. giving up that kind of stuff,

1569. it's being granted to you,

1570. it's being given to you

  1571. in the church.

1572. But he includes in here

  1573. also

  1574. that persecutions

  1575. will come.

  1576. Isn't that curious?

  1577. He talks about

  1578. all these things

  1579. but he includes

  1580. all these other things

  1581. in this age

1582. that are going to be

  1583. given back to you,

  1584. families, brothers, sisters,

  1585. with persecutions.

1586. Why would he include this here?

1587. It's because he wants them

1588. to know that life's not

1589. going to just get easy.

  1590. You've left behind

  1591. this family,

  1592. I'm giving you

  1593. a different family,

  1594. there's going to be

  1595. limitless resources,

  1596. you're going to have

  1597. so much fun,

1598. it's going to be great.

  1599. No,

  1600. you'll be persecuted.

  1601. Matthew 5.10,

  1602. Blessed are those

  1603. who are persecuted

  1604. for righteousness' sake,

  1605. for theirs is

  1606. the kingdom of heaven.

  1607. Blessed are you

  1608. when others revile you

  1609. and persecute you

  1610. and utter all kinds

  1611. of evil against you

  1612. falsely on my account.

  1613. Rejoice and be glad

  1614. for your reward

  1615. is great in heaven.

  1616. For so they persecuted

  1617. the prophets

  1618. who were before you.

  1619. It's a wonderful response

  1620. that the apostles

  1621. are recorded for us

  1622. in Acts chapter 5

    Acts 5 chapter mention

  1623. after the apostles

1624. are beaten by a council

  1625. of Sadducees

  1626. in these early days

  1627. of the church.

  1628. It says,

1629. Then they left the presence

  1630. of the council rejoicing

  1631. that they were counted

  1632. worthy to suffer dishonor

  1633. for the name.

  1634. One of the ways

  1635. we'll know

  1636. that we're following Jesus

  1637. is if we're persecuted

  1638. for his name,

  1639. rightly,

1640. not in some of the

  1641. bizarre political ways

1642. we see in our day,

  1643. but rightly persecuted

  1644. for sharing the gospel

  1645. of Jesus Christ.

  1646. So how do we

  1647. in this day

  1648. properly

  1649. manage our money?

1650. All I can say to you

  1651. is what the scriptures

  1652. say to you.

  1653. Work hard.

  1654. Gain it.

  1655. Please,

  1656. young people,

  1657. go after it

  1658. because the church

  1659. needs it.

  1660. Our church needs it.

  1661. Other churches need it.

  1662. The work of God

  1663. needs your resources.

  1664. Be generous.

  1665. Recognize

  1666. that you're given money

  1667. to live on

  1668. for your needs,

  1669. the temporal things,

  1670. and take the excess

  1671. and give it

  1672. freely

  1673. to the kingdom.

  1674. Gain Christ.

  1675. Buy more of him

  1676. with your money.

  1677. Not the salvation,

  1678. but the experience

  1679. of him.

  1680. Be involved

  1681. in what he's doing

  1682. around the world

  1683. with your finances.

1684. It used to frustrate me

  1685. that the scriptures

1686. seem to be so vague

  1687. on some issues.

  1688. Like,

1689. I just want the list.

1690. Just give me the budget.

  1691. I want the percentages.

  1692. Just tell me exactly

1693. what it is I'm supposed

1694. to do in every area

  1695. of my life.

1696. And I've come to the point

  1697. where I believe

1698. that God does not do that

  1699. because he wants us.

1700. He wants to know you.

  1701. And he wants you

  1702. to know him.

1703. He wants you to align

  1704. your desires

  1705. with his desires.

  1706. Right?

  1707. If I was given a list,

  1708. I would ignore him

  1709. altogether.

  1710. I'd stop asking.

1711. He already gave me the list.

  1712. I know how I'm supposed

1713. to send in my money.

1714. He wants us to go to him.

1715. He wants us to go to him

  1716. on our knees humbly,

  1717. recognizing that nothing

  1718. that we have

  1719. belongs to us ultimately.

1720. It was given to us

  1721. as a gift

  1722. by his provision.

  1723. He gave it.

  1724. He could certainly

  1725. take it away.

1726. Pay attention to the story

1727. of Job on that point.

1728. And he gave it back.

1729. Why is he giving it to us?

  1730. What is the point

1731. of him giving it to us?

  1732. It's that we might

  1733. enjoy him forever.

  1734. He also promises here

  1735. that this gifting,

  1736. this giving,

  1737. will have some effect

1738. in the age to come.

1739. And that is eternal life.

1740. Our grace can't be cheap.

1741. There must be a response.

  1742. There's a cost

  1743. to following Jesus.

1744. And how do you know

  1745. if you're a disciple

  1746. of Jesus Christ?

  1747. How do you know?

  1748. Don't pin it on a date.

1749. Don't pin it on some card

  1750. that somebody handed you,

  1751. a little placard,

1752. or a date you wrote

1753. in the front of your Bible.

  1754. I grew up in a church

  1755. that told me constantly

1756. if you ever doubt your faith,

1757. if you're ever not so sure

  1758. that you're saved,

  1759. remember the date

  1760. that you were saved.

  1761. This is entirely anti-biblical.

1762. It's not in the Scriptures anywhere

1763. to pin it on a date like that.

  1764. Rather,

1765. pin it on the fact

1766. that you're growing in holiness,

  1767. that you don't love

1768. the things of the world,

1769. but you love the things of God,

  1770. and that you're growing

  1771. in that way.

  1772. Test your faith.

  1773. If you don't know

  1774. that you're a Christian,

  1775. I plead with you,

  1776. repent and believe.

  1777. Repent and believe.

1778. If you are a Christian,

  1779. there's room for repentance

  1780. and belief as well.

1781. Let me close by reading to you

  1782. a psalm.

  1783. Psalm 73.

1784. Let me ask you to turn there.

  1785. I'll finish quickly.

  1786. I had every intention

1787. of not going this long today.

1788. Psalm 73 is a psalm of Asaph.

  1789. He's a songwriter.

1790. Some of my favorite psalms are his.

  1791. He says,

1792. Truly God is good to Israel

1793. for those who are pure in heart.

  1794. And so,

  1795. God is good.

  1796. I'm setting that up

1797. as the very premise of this psalm.

1798. For those who are pure in heart,

1799. God is good to us.

  1800. Verse 2,

  1801. But as for me,

1802. my feet had almost stumbled.

1803. My steps had nearly slipped.

1804. For I was envious of the arrogant

1805. when I saw the prosperity

  1806. of the wicked.

1807. For they have no pangs until death.

1808. Their bodies are fat and sleek,

1809. which would have been a good thing

  1810. in this day.

1811. They are not in trouble

  1812. as others are.

  1813. They are not stricken

1814. like the rest of mankind.

  1815. Therefore,

  1816. pride is their necklace.

  1817. Violence covers them

  1818. as a garment.

  1819. Their eyes swell out

  1820. through fatness.

1821. Their hearts overflow with follies.

1822. They scoff and speak with malice.

  1823. Loftily,

  1824. they threaten oppression.

  1825. They set their mouths

  1826. against the heavens

1827. and their tongue struts the earth.

  1828. Therefore,

1829. his people turn back to them

1830. and find no fault in them.

  1831. And they say,

  1832. How can God know?

  1833. Is there knowledge

  1834. in the Most High?

  1835. Behold,

  1836. these are the wicked,

  1837. always at ease.

  1838. They increase in riches.

  1839. So see,

  1840. he's recognizing

  1841. the folly

  1842. and the error

  1843. of these men.

  1844. But that these men

1845. are followed by other people.

  1846. People look to them

  1847. for leadership.

1848. They think they've got it

  1849. all together

1850. because they're fat and sleek.

  1851. Because they have wealth.

  1852. Because they're not suffering

1853. at all in this world.

  1854. He says,

  1855. My feet almost slipped.

1856. I almost bought into this.

  1857. I almost thought

1858. that was a better way.

  1859. We brought this

  1860. into our current context.

1861. We could throw the word

  1862. American in here

  1863. a few times.

  1864. Verse 13.

  1865. All in vain

1866. have I kept my heart clean

  1867. and washed my hands

  1868. in innocence.

1869. For all the day long

  1870. I have been stricken

  1871. and rebuked

  1872. every morning.

  1873. If I had said

  1874. I will speak thus,

  1875. I would have betrayed

  1876. the generation

  1877. of your children.

  1878. There's that summation

1879. of the way he was feeling

1880. and the things he was thinking.

1881. The way he almost aired.

  1882. Verse 16.

  1883. But when I thought

  1884. how to understand this,

  1885. it seemed to me

  1886. a wearisome task.

  1887. How is it that

  1888. these people,

  1889. these evil people,

  1890. these adulterous people

  1891. have everything?

  1892. And those who

  1893. keep their hands clean,

1894. who try to follow God,

  1895. don't have things?

1896. It was a wearisome task

  1897. to understand this

  1898. until I went

1899. into the sanctuary of God.

  1900. Then I discerned

  1901. their end.

  1902. Truly you set them

  1903. in slippery places.

  1904. How they are destroyed

  1905. in a moment,

  1906. swept away utterly

  1907. by chairs,

  1908. like a dream

  1909. when one awakes.

  1910. O Lord,

  1911. when you rouse yourself,

  1912. you despise them

  1913. as phantoms.

  1914. Their eternal destruction.

  1915. He understood

  1916. their eternal destruction.

  1917. His eternal life,

  1918. their eternal destruction.

  1919. Verse 21.

  1920. My soul was embittered

1921. when I was pricked in heart.

1922. I was brutish and ignorant.

1923. I was like a beast towards you.

  1924. Nevertheless,

1925. I am continually with you.

1926. You hold my right hand.

  1927. You guide me

  1928. with your counsel.

  1929. And afterward,

  1930. you will receive me

  1931. to glory.

1932. Whom have I in heaven

  1933. but you?

  1934. And there is nothing

  1935. on earth

1936. that I desire beside you.

  1937. My flesh

  1938. and my heart

  1939. may fail,

1940. but God is the strength

  1941. of my heart

  1942. and my portion

  1943. forever.

1944. For those who are far from you

  1945. shall perish.

  1946. You put an end

  1947. to everyone

1948. who is unfaithful to you.

  1949. But for me,

  1950. it is good

  1951. to be near God.

  1952. There's the wealth.

  1953. There's the true wealth.

  1954. There's the possession

  1955. of poverty.

  1956. God himself.

1957. I have made the Lord God

  1958. my refuge

  1959. that I may tell

  1960. of all

  1961. your works.

  1962. Let's pray together.

  1963. God bless.
