  1. I'll tell you that this week, Thursday night, I was hit by a truck driven by a big burly guy who goes by the radio handle ragweed.

  2. ! And I've suffered for it. You guys really, I'm sorry, you really thought I was hit by a truck. I wasn't really hit by a truck.

  3. It kind of flattened me just the same. On Friday, I'm still suffering from that now. A couple of weeks ago, I was reminded of

  4. a quote by Dr. Martin Lloyd-Jones who said,

  5. Preaching is theology coming through a man who is on fire. And this morning, I feel like I'm just smoldering.

  6. But we'll get through it together. We do believe in the primacy of preaching in our corporate meetings.

  7. The preached Word of God is incredibly important to the people of God, and we live in a day where that seems to be on the decline.

  8. And as it is, it also seems that the church is on the decline. And so even amidst suffering, rough voices, the preaching of the Word is of great, great importance.

  9. Now today will probably be a briefer sermon than we've had in the past. I think you all are due that.

  10. I think over the past, if I'm remembering correctly, over the past three weeks, I've preached for two hours and 48 minutes, I think.

  11. So I'm going to try to bring it in for you tonight. Although ironically, we're going to cover more text the Sunday than we have in the past Sunday.

  12. So join me at the beginning of verse 32 of Mark chapter 10 as I read through the end of the chapter.

    Mark 10 chapter mention

  13. Woe is right.

  14. And they were on the road going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was walking ahead of them.

  15. And they were amazed, and those who followed were afraid.

  16. And taking the twelve again, He began to tell them what was to happen to Him, saying,

  17. See, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and the scribes,

  18. and they will condemn Him to death and deliver Him over to the Gentiles.

  19. And they will mock Him and spit on Him and flog Him and kill Him.

  20. And after three days, He will rise.

  21. And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came up to Him and said to Him,

  22. Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you.

  23. And He said to them, What do you want Me to do for you?

  24. And they said to Him, Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory.

  25. Jesus said to them, You do not know what you are asking.

  26. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?

  27. And they said to Him, We are able.

  28. And Jesus said to them, The cup that I drink you will drink.

  29. And with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized.

  30. But to sit at My right hand or at My left is not Mine to grant,

  31. for it is for those for whom it has been prepared.

  32. And when the ten heard it, they began to be indignant at James and John.

  33. And Jesus called them to Him and said to them,

  34. You know that those who are considered rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them,

  35. and their great ones exercise authority over them.

  36. But it shall not be so among you.

  37. But whoever will be great among you must be your servant.

  38. And whoever will be first among you must be slave of all.

  39. For even the Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve,

  40. and to give up His life as a ransom for many.

  41. And they came to Jericho.

  42. And as He was leaving Jericho with His disciples, a great crowd,

  43. Bartimaeus, a blind beggar, the son of Timaeus, was sitting by the roadside.

  44. And when He heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, He began to cry out and said,

  45. Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on Me.

  46. And many rebuked Him, telling Him to be silent.

  47. But He cried out all the more, Son of David, have mercy on Me.

  48. And Jesus stopped and said, Call Him.

  49. And they called the blind man, saying to Him,

  50. Take heart, get up, He is calling you.

  51. And throwing off His cloak, He sprang up and came to Jesus.

  52. And Jesus said to him, What do you want Me to do for you?

  53. And the blind man said to him, Rabbi, let me recover My sight.

  54. And Jesus said to him, Go your way, your faith has made you well.

  55. And immediately He recovered His sight and followed Him on the way.

  56. This is God's Word to us, written for His glory and our good.

  57. We would all do well to listen to it in order to believe its promises and obey its commands.

  58. Let's pray together.

  59. Father God, we are in all ways and at all times beholden to Your strength.

  60. We are completely weak apart from You.

  61. But there are certainly moments in our lives that we feel that more readily.

  62. And Father, this is probably the best place for us to be wholly dependent,

  63. recognizing that we need You and we need You this morning to preach through me,

  64. to apply the preaching of Your Word to our hearts,

  65. to change us from one degree of glory to another.

  66. We throw ourselves on Your promises.

  67. We know that You love Your people.

  68. And You want to see Your people come into perfection.

  69. We know that You love Your glory, that You're zealous for it.

  70. And You want a people that will honor You with their lives and with their lips.

  71. And so have Your way with us this morning as we open Your Word.

  72. And we pray this in Christ's name.

  73. Amen.

  74. Amen.

  75. So, as we've discussed previously, Mark's Gospel is written in a sort of three-act way.

  76. Now, I don't think he laid it out specifically in this way,

  77. but you can kind of see some divisions.

  78. And we've worked our way through Act 1 up through chapter 8, verse 21,

  79. which largely accounts for Jesus' public ministry.

  80. We certainly pick up some teaching in there.

  81. We see lots of miracles.

  82. All these miracles, they gave affirmation to the words that He was saying.

  83. But since chapter 8, verse 22,

  84. we've come into what we've kind of seen to be the second act,

  85. where Jesus' public ministry is minimized

  86. and His attention to disciples is emphasized.

  87. We can see this in chapter 9, verse 30 and 31.

  88. They went on from there and passed through Galilee.

  89. And He did not want anyone to know,

  90. for He was teaching His disciples.

  91. This was the major thrust of His ministry at this time.

  92. And in this act that goes through the end of chapter 10,

  93. we see it punctuated by Jesus' passion predictions.

  94. That is, His predictions of His suffering, His death, and His resurrection.

  95. We saw that in chapter 8, verse 31.

  96. And in 9, verse 31.

  97. And then before us this morning in verses 33 and 34 of chapter 10.

  98. So it seems to be marked out by these passion predictions.

  99. And in each case of Mark's account,

  100. these passion predictions are followed by a record of the misunderstanding of the disciples.

  101. And I find it very easy to wag my head at the disciples

  102. and not be able to comprehend how it is that they were so misled and so confused.

  103. But as we've noted, the culture was informing them about who the Messiah would be.

  104. They thought the Messiah was going to come and reign militarily.

  105. They thought He was going to sit on a throne on this earth in that time.

  106. And He was going to lead a great army and overthrow Rome.

  107. That He was going to set the Jews free from their earthly oppression.

  108. But because God's Word is written for us,

  109. we ought not merely just muse at the response of the disciples.

  110. Look at the poor, pitiful disciples and their muted understanding.

  111. But we also ought to apply Jesus' teaching to our own hearts.

  112. To ask the question,

  113. do we rightly understand what it means to be a disciple of Jesus Christ?

  114. We have been called from our nets on the seashore.

  115. We are now following Him.

  116. But do we follow Him rightly?

  117. And so we see their journey continuing in verse 32.

  118. And for the first time, we see the name of the place that they are headed to.

  119. I have been saying to you all along that this last six months,

  120. as He's putting His major focus on the disciples,

  121. that He's moving towards Jerusalem.

  122. This is how we know that to be the case in verse 32.

  123. They're moving from the east, headed towards Jerusalem.

  124. If you're looking at a map,

  125. it would look as if they're heading southwest.

  126. But you see it says they're going up to Jerusalem.

  127. But everything was up to Jerusalem in this day.

  128. Jerusalem was the great pinnacle of civilization.

  129. And furthermore, since they're coming from the east,

  130. there actually was a climb.

  131. They had quite a steep road on their journey to Jerusalem.

  132. So they're traveling up to Jerusalem.

  133. And we see in verse 32 a difference in the way in which they're walking.

  134. Mark records that Jesus was walking ahead of them.

  135. It doesn't seem to be a stroll amongst the disciples any longer,

  136. where He's teaching them as they talk along the way.

  137. But now He's walking out ahead of them.

  138. He's now determined where He's going and what He's going to go and do.

  139. You will note, for the original language,

  140. we see that this fear and amazement is the fear of the disciples

  141. and is the amazement of the crowd.

  142. And these things should be read in light of the following words

  143. that Jesus is going to speak to them.

  144. Saying to them,

  145. See, we're going up to Jerusalem.

  146. And He makes this prediction once again,

  147. a more expanded version of the predictions that He's made earlier

  148. in chapter 8, verse 31,

  149. and chapter 9, verse 31.

  150. And we know from our hindsight,

  151. from our position in redemptive history,

  152. that all of these things came to pass.

  153. Turn with me to Mark 15.

  154. We'll look in a short text here

  155. and see all of the realizations of all of these things.

  156. Mark 15, beginning in verse 15,

  157. So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd,

  158. released for them Barabbas.

  159. And having scourged Jesus,

  160. they flogged Him.

  161. He delivered Him to be crucified.

  162. And the soldiers led Him away inside the palace,

  163. that is the governor's headquarters.

  164. And they called together the whole battalion.

  165. And they clothed Him in a purple cloak

  166. and twisted together a crown of thorns.

  167. They put it on Him.

  168. And they began to salute Him.

  169. Hail, King of the Jews!

  170. They mocked Him.

  171. And they were striking His head with a reed

  172. and spitting on Him.

  173. They spit on Him

  174. and kneeling down in homage to Him.

  175. And when they had mocked Him,

  176. they stripped Him of the purple cloak

  177. and put His own clothes on Him.

  178. And they led Him out to crucify Him.

  179. We know what follows.

  180. They did in fact kill Him.

  181. So this tragic prediction that Jesus makes for us

  182. in chapter 10 certainly comes true.

  183. And the disciples are having a hard time understanding

  184. why.

  185. Why would the King of the Jews,

  186. why would the Messiah,

  187. the One who has come to deliver us,

  188. die?

  189. It seems that the fear of the disciples

  190. is rooted in their temporal mindsets

  191. of what this death march Jerusalem

  192. was going to mean for them.

  193. They had yet to fully comprehend

  194. and understand the eternal purposes

  195. of God and Jesus Christ.

  196. They had yet to understand

  197. that Jesus came to inaugurate

  198. a spiritual kingdom

  199. that would be consummated

  200. someday in the future.

  201. They seemed to miss that Jesus

  202. had always finished

  203. His passion predictions

  204. with His resurrection.

  205. He never fails.

  206. Never fails to say it.

  207. After three days,

  208. He will rise.

  209. He never leaves them hopeless.

  210. After three days,

  211. I will rise.

  212. This is the exclamation mark

  213. on the end of these predictions

  214. of suffering.

  215. Death will have no dominion

  216. over me.

  217. And therefore,

  218. death has no dominion

  219. over us.

  220. Peter put it this way

  221. in 1 Peter 1.3,

  222. Blessed be the God and Father

  223. of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  224. According to His great mercy,

  225. He has caused us

  226. to be born again

  227. to a living hope

  228. through the resurrection

  229. of Jesus Christ

  230. from the dead.

  231. In Jesus' resurrection,

  232. we ourselves

  233. have been resurrected.

  234. We were put to death

  235. and we have been raised again

  236. to live with Him.

  237. This is the beautiful promise

  238. of the Gospel

  239. when Jesus is giving it

  240. to them right here

  241. and He's laying it out

  242. before them

  243. and they have just yet

  244. to fully understand.

  245. And we see it again.

  246. This is the third time now.

  247. Look at the response

  248. of James and John.

  249. These brothers,

  250. the sons of Zebedee,

  251. they make a request of Him.

  252. They want to sit,

  253. one at the right,

  254. one at the left hand,

  255. in glory.

  256. They want to reign with Him

  257. in glory.

  258. Perhaps because they're familiar

  259. with 1 Samuel 2.8.

  260. Which says,

  261. He raises up the poor

  262. from the dust.

  263. He lifts the needy

  264. from the ash heap

  265. to make them sit with princes

  266. and inherit a seat of honor.

  267. They were rightly asking

  268. in some sense,

  269. Lord, we want to reign with You.

  270. We want the promise

  271. of 1 Samuel 2.8

  272. to come true for us.

  273. But look at how Jesus responds

  274. to them in verse 38.

  275. You do not know

  276. what you are asking.

  277. If you are to receive

  278. the blessing of reigning with Me

  279. in glory,

  280. do you understand

  281. what that means?

  282. And He asks them a question,

  283. a rhetorical question,

  284. which He answers

  285. that they will in fact

  286. be able to do.

  287. Are you able to drink

  288. the cup that I drink

  289. or to be baptized

  290. with the baptism

  291. with which I am baptized?

  292. And this question

  293. is saturated

  294. with Old Testament imagery

  295. of suffering.

  296. They would have understood

  297. what He meant

  298. when He talked about

  299. drinking of a cup

  300. and being baptized

  301. with this baptism.

  302. Drink the cup that I drink

  303. means the cup of God's wrath.

  304. This is what He's specifically

  305. referring to in this case.

  306. At the hands of men,

  307. Jesus Christ on the cross

  308. was going to experience

  309. the full cup of God's wrath.

  310. Psalm 75.8 reads,

  311. For in the hand of the Lord

  312. there is a cup

  313. with foaming wine

  314. well mixed

  315. and He pours out from it

  316. and all the wicked of the earth

  317. shall drain it down

  318. to the dregs.

  319. This is why Jesus prays

  320. in the Garden of Gethsemane.

  321. Good record of this

  322. is Luke 22.42.

  323. Father, if You are willing,

  324. remove this cup from Me.

  325. Nevertheless,

  326. not My will,

  327. but Yours.

  328. Let us be done.

  329. Jesus knew that it was

  330. the very wrath of God

  331. that was going to be

  332. poured out on Him

  333. for our sins

  334. that He was going to drink of.

  335. And in His human nature

  336. asked that if God's will

  337. could be accomplished

  338. in another way

  339. that He wouldn't have

  340. to do this thing.

  341. But yet,

  342. this being the will of God,

  343. the preordained will of God,

  344. Jesus drank it

  345. to the very last drop.

  346. How about the baptism

  347. that He refers to here?

  348. That's a clear allusion

  349. to God's judgment

  350. in the flood.

  351. That Jesus was going to be

  352. overwhelmed by God's judgment.

  353. Again,

  354. poured out on Him

  355. because of the sinfulness

  356. of mankind.

  357. And James and John

  358. respond to Him,

  359. we are able.

  360. We are able.

  361. And I don't think that they

  362. fully comprehended

  363. what Jesus was talking about

  364. in His suffering.

  365. None of us can suffer

  366. the way that Jesus suffered.

  367. I don't know how many of you

  368. saw the passion of the Christ

  369. such a brutal depiction,

  370. a fairly accurate depiction

  371. of what crucifixion looked like.

  372. The thing that was

  373. heartbreaking to me

  374. about that

  375. is everybody said,

  376. oh, look at this man

  377. and what they did for me

  378. and the things he did

  379. in his flesh,

  380. others would do.

  381. I think James and John

  382. understand that.

  383. I would do that for you.

  384. I would receive that kind

  385. of physical suffering

  386. for you,

  387. but the thing that I could

  388. never do for you

  389. is to be punished

  390. in my spirit

  391. the way that Jesus was.

  392. To drink of the full wrath

  393. of God

  394. for the sins of the church.

  395. To have His judgment

  396. wash over Him.

  397. One who had been

  398. in perfect union

  399. with the Godhead

  400. for all eternity.

  401. Suddenly had God

  402. turn His back on Him.

  403. This is something

  404. that none of us

  405. could have ever bore

  406. except for Jesus Christ.

  407. So they say we are able

  408. and if we're getting

  409. to this point in the text

  410. and we've yet to read

  411. the rest of it,

  412. we should say,

  413. no you can't.

  414. Impossible.

  415. How could you possibly?

  416. But what does Jesus

  417. respond to them?

  418. The cup that I drink,

  419. you will drink.

  420. With the baptism

  421. with which I am baptized,

  422. you will be baptized.

  423. Now is He talking about

  424. the exact same suffering

  425. that He would go through?

  426. No.

  427. He's not.

  428. But He is talking about

  429. the physical suffering.

  430. The persecution

  431. that He'll receive

  432. at the hands of the Gentiles.

  433. They will receive

  434. as well.

  435. Surely you will.

  436. James and John

  437. were not lacking

  438. in willingness.

  439. But they didn't fully get

  440. what they were saying.

  441. They wanted a reward

  442. for their part in the suffering.

  443. It's if they're coming

  444. to Him to say,

  445. we want to guarantee

  446. that if we're going to continue

  447. to follow you to Jerusalem

  448. and this is what's going

  449. to happen to you,

  450. that something really good

  451. and positive is going

  452. to happen for us.

  453. We are willing,

  454. we are able to suffer

  455. if only we can have

  456. the promise of glory.

  457. You see,

  458. they wanted to serve Jesus

  459. for their sake

  460. and not for the sake

  461. of others.

  462. And they certainly did.

  463. James,

  464. you can read about

  465. in Acts 12.2,

  466. was killed by King Herod

  467. with a sword.

  468. John was exiled

  469. to the island of Patmos.

  470. Tradition holds

  471. that he's the only apostle

  472. that was not martyred.

  473. However,

  474. he was tortured.

  475. He suffered greatly.

  476. It's believed that he died

  477. of natural causes,

  478. but he took on

  479. all kinds of torment.

  480. He had even been dipped

  481. in hot oil

  482. and the skin on his body

  483. was removed

  484. by that process.

  485. They certainly suffered

  486. for the sake of the name

  487. of Jesus Christ,

  488. but Jesus presses to them

  489. that this suffering

  490. does not guarantee

  491. some special status,

  492. a future glory to be sure,

  493. but not some special status.

  494. However,

  495. humility does lead

  496. to exaltation.

  497. It turns me to Luke 14

  498. while I take a water break

  499. from my throat.

  500. He says to them,

  501. it's not for me to decide

  502. who will sit at the right hand

  503. or the left hand of me

  504. in glory.

  505. This place has been prepared

  506. beforehand.

  507. But what does

  508. humiliation

  509. award us?

  510. How can we

  511. persevere

  512. through persecution?

  513. And there is a future promise

  514. for us.

  515. He tells a parable

  516. beginning in verse 7,

  517. Luke 14.

  518. Now he told a parable

  519. to those who were invited

  520. when he noticed

  521. how they chose

  522. the places of honor,

  523. saying to them,

  524. when you are invited

  525. by someone to a wedding feast,

  526. do not sit down

  527. in a place of honor,

  528. lest someone more distinguished

  529. than you

  530. be invited by him.

  531. People in this day

  532. who were more distinguished

  533. sat closer to the head

  534. of the table.

  535. Verse 9,

  536. And he who invited you both

  537. will come and say to you,

  538. give your place

  539. to this person,

  540. and then you will begin

  541. with shame

  542. to take the lowest place.

  543. But when you are invited,

  544. go and sit in the lowest place

  545. so that when the host comes,

  546. he may say to you,

  547. friend,

  548. move up higher.

  549. Then you will be honored

  550. in the presence of all

  551. who sit at table

  552. with you.

  553. For everyone

  554. who exalts himself

  555. will be humbled,

  556. and he who humbles himself

  557. will be exalted.

  558. So the very thing

  559. that they're asking for

  560. is the self-exaltation.

  561. And the point is further made

  562. by the response

  563. of the other ten.

  564. This activity amongst

  565. James and John

  566. and the other disciples

  567. leads Jesus

  568. to the teaching

  569. of verse 42, 43, 44, and 45.

  570. It says when the ten heard it,

  571. verse 41,

  572. they began to be indignant

  573. at James and John.

  574. They became angry with them

  575. because James and John

  576. were asking for seats of honor.

  577. It was the same problem

  578. we saw back in chapter 9

  579. where they're arguing

  580. about who is the greatest

  581. among them.

  582. They're feuding in between

  583. of their little band.

  584. Who's going to be generals

  585. and who's going to be colonels

  586. in Jesus' army?

  587. And Jesus calls to them together

  588. and says,

  589. You know those

  590. who are considered

  591. rulers of the Gentiles,

  592. lord it over them.

  593. They deal with them unjustly.

  594. And their great ones

  595. exercise authority over them.

  596. You know it to be true

  597. of this world

  598. that people who are

  599. in positions of power

  600. rain down on people

  601. who are lowly.

  602. But God's kingdom

  603. looks different.

  604. Verse 43,

  605. But it shall not be so

  606. among you.

  607. But whoever will be great

  608. among you

  609. must be your servant.

  610. And whoever will be first

  611. among you

  612. must be slave

  613. of all.

  614. It seems to be

  615. a little backwards

  616. in God's economy

  617. that if we want to be

  618. first,

  619. we must be last.

  620. That we must

  621. empty ourselves

  622. and serve

  623. others.

  624. And then Jesus

  625. gives for this

  626. the great

  627. example

  628. of His own life.

  629. For even

  630. the Son of Man

  631. came not to serve,

  632. not to be served,

  633. but to serve,

  634. and to give His life

  635. as a ransom

  636. for many.

  637. The Son of Man,

  638. Jesus,

  639. the Christ,

  640. the Messiah

  641. came not to rule

  642. militarily,

  643. not to be set up

  644. on a throne

  645. and worshipped

  646. in the temporal,

  647. but to serve

  648. in the eternal.

  649. To give up

  650. His life

  651. that we may

  652. have life

  653. in Him.

  654. He secured

  655. an eternal

  656. redemption

  657. for the church

  658. in this great

  659. climax

  660. of redemptive

  661. history.

  662. He's just

  663. driving the same

  664. point.

  665. It's the theme

  666. of this second

  667. act of Mark's

  668. that He's made

  669. previously to us.

  670. Remember Mark

    Mark 8 chapter mention

  671. chapter 8,

  672. 34 and 35.

  673. This is in response

  674. to the improper

  675. understanding

  676. of the disciples.

  677. If anyone

  678. would come after

  679. Me,

  680. let him deny

  681. himself

  682. and take up

  683. his cross

  684. and follow

  685. Me.

  686. That is,

  687. empty him

  688. of himself,

  689. all of his

  690. self-determination,

  691. all of his

  692. self-worship

  693. and follow

  694. Jesus.

  695. Verse 35,

  696. For whoever

  697. would save

  698. his life

  699. will lose it.

  700. But whoever

  701. loses his life

  702. for My sake

  703. and the Gospels

  704. will save it.

  705. Again,

  706. Mark chapter 9,

    Mark 9 chapter mention

  707. after the inappropriate,

  708. the misunderstanding

  709. of the disciples,

  710. their argument

  711. about who

  712. would be first

  713. and who

  714. would be the

  715. greatest.

  716. In verse 35

  717. of chapter 9,

  718. if anyone

  719. would be first,

  720. he must be

  721. last of all

  722. and servant

  723. of all.

  724. And Jesus

  725. again drives

  726. all of this

  727. with the great

  728. example of

  729. His life

  730. and the way

  731. in which

  732. He came

  733. to serve.

  734. Why do we

  735. think,

  736. why do we

  737. misunderstand

  738. understand

  739. that we

  740. would be

  741. any greater

  742. than this?

  743. Jesus came

  744. into this

  745. world

  746. and was

  747. hated.

  748. You see,

  749. the thousands

  750. that are following

  751. Him through the

  752. first part of

  753. Mark are

  754. following Him

  755. because of the

  756. things that they

  757. do,

  758. not because of

  759. who He is.

  760. For the things

  761. that can be

  762. granted to them,

  763. not because they

  764. want Him.

  765. He's rejected

  766. in His own

  767. town.

  768. People will

  769. follow Him

  770. for a while

  771. and then when

  772. He says

  773. something difficult,

  774. they will

  775. leave.

  776. He's got a

  777. very small

  778. group of

  779. people that

  780. are devoted

  781. to Him.

  782. We see in

  783. the beginning

  784. of Acts

  785. probably about

  786. 120.

  787. 120!

  788. Our normal

  789. Sunday morning

  790. congregation is

  791. larger than

  792. that.

  793. This is

  794. Jesus,

  795. the Christ.

  796. Why do we

  797. think we

  798. would be any

  799. better?

  800. He was

  801. delivered to

  802. the authorities.

  803. He was

  804. spit on.

  805. He was

  806. flogged.

  807. He was

  808. mocked.

  809. And He was

  810. finally killed.

  811. Why do we

  812. think anything

  813. different would

  814. come to us?

  815. In case you

  816. do,

  817. Matthew

    Matthew 10 chapter mention

  818. chapter 10.

  819. Turn there

  820. please.

  821. Jesus is not

  822. unaware of what

  823. will happen to

  824. us as we

  825. devote our

  826. lives to

  827. us,

  828. as we

  829. die to

  830. ourselves,

  831. take our

  832. crosses,

  833. as we

  834. follow Him.

  835. Beginning of

  836. verse 16,

  837. Matthew 10,

  838. Behold,

  839. I am sending

  840. you out as

  841. sheep in

  842. the midst

  843. of wolves.

  844. So be

  845. wise as

  846. serpents and

  847. innocent as

  848. doves.

  849. Do you know

  850. what happens to

  851. sheep in the

  852. midst of wolves?

  853. Beware of

  854. men, for they

  855. will deliver you

  856. over to courts

  857. and flog you

  858. in their

  859. synagogues.

  860. And you

  861. will be

  862. dragged before

  863. governors and

  864. kings for

  865. my sake,

  866. to bear witness

  867. before them

  868. and the

  869. Gentiles.

  870. When they

  871. deliver you

  872. over, do

  873. not be

  874. anxious how

  875. you are to

  876. speak or what

  877. you are to

  878. say, for what

  879. you are to

  880. say will be

  881. given to you

  882. in that hour.

  883. For it is not

  884. you who speak,

  885. but the spirit of

  886. your father

  887. speaking through

  888. you.

  889. Brother will

  890. deliver brother

  891. over to death

  892. and the father

  893. his child,

  894. and children will

  895. rise against

  896. parents and have

  897. them put to

  898. death, and you

  899. will be hated

  900. by all for

  901. my name's

  902. sake.

  903. But the one

  904. who endures to

  905. the end will

  906. be saved.

  907. When they

  908. persecute you

  909. in one town,

  910. flee to the

  911. next.

  912. For truly I

  913. say to you,

  914. you will not

  915. have gone

  916. through all

  917. the towns

  918. of Israel

  919. before the

  920. Son of

  921. Man comes.

  922. A disciple

  923. is not above

  924. his teacher,

  925. nor a servant

  926. above his

  927. master.

  928. It is enough

  929. for the

  930. disciple to

  931. be like his

  932. teacher,

  933. and the

  934. servant like

  935. his master.

  936. If they

  937. have called

  938. the master

  939. of the house

  940. Beelzebul,

  941. how much

  942. more will

  943. they malign

  944. those of

  945. his household?

  946. He says

  947. again,

  948. John 15

  949. 18-20,

  950. If the

  951. world hates

  952. you,

  953. you know

  954. that it

  955. has hated

  956. me before

  957. it hated

  958. you.

  959. If you

  960. were of

  961. the world,

  962. the world

  963. would love

  964. you as

  965. its own.

  966. But because

  967. you are not

  968. of the world,

  969. but I chose

  970. you out of

  971. the world,

  972. therefore the

  973. world hates

  974. you.

  975. Remember the

  976. word that I

  977. said to you,

  978. a servant

  979. is not greater

  980. than his

  981. master.

  982. If they

  983. persecuted

  984. me,

  985. they will

  986. also

  987. persecute

  988. you.

  989. So if we

  990. belong to

  991. the Lord,

  992. if we are

  993. following Jesus

  994. in his way,

  995. we will

  996. suffer.

  997. There's no

  998. wiggle room

  999. in this.

  1000. There's no

  1001. way around

  1002. it.

  1003. And so what

  1004. does it

  1005. mean for

  1006. us if we

  1007. don't

  1008. suffer?

  1009. v. 19

  1010. of John

  1011. 15,

  1012. if you

  1013. were of

  1014. the world,

  1015. the world

  1016. would love

  1017. you as

  1018. its own.

  1019. It is

  1020. possible to

  1021. be a

  1022. disciple of

  1023. Jesus Christ,

  1024. to have

  1025. made a

  1026. profession of

  1027. faith in

  1028. him,

  1029. to be

  1030. truly saved,

  1031. and to

  1032. have stopped

  1033. following

  1034. him altogether.

  1035. That

  1036. possibility

  1037. exists that

  1038. you become

  1039. so ensnared

  1040. by the

  1041. traps of

  1042. this world

  1043. that he

  1044. has gone

  1045. on ahead

  1046. of you,

  1047. and you're

  1048. just sitting

  1049. in the

  1050. luxury of

  1051. the things

  1052. around you.

  1053. If the

  1054. world doesn't

  1055. hate you,

  1056. it's because

  1057. you look

  1058. like the

  1059. world.

  1060. If you're

  1061. following

  1062. Christ and

  1063. you look

  1064. like him,

  1065. you will

  1066. be

  1067. persecuted.

  1068. Now,

  1069. what does

  1070. this look

  1071. like for

  1072. us as

  1073. American

  1074. Christians?

  1075. We have

  1076. laws that

  1077. prevent

  1078. by and

  1079. large

  1080. physical

  1081. persecution.

  1082. It's not

  1083. likely that

  1084. any of

  1085. us would

  1086. be beheaded,

  1087. drug out

  1088. of our

  1089. homes,

  1090. thrown

  1091. into

  1092. prison,

  1093. certainly

  1094. not

  1095. crucified.

  1096. There are

  1097. laws that

  1098. prevent

  1099. such

  1100. things,

  1101. but yet

  1102. persecution

  1103. should

  1104. exist

  1105. in other

  1106. forms by

  1107. us being

  1108. thought

  1109. strange,

  1110. being made

  1111. fun of,

  1112. people thinking

  1113. that their

  1114. intellect is

  1115. so much

  1116. larger than

  1117. ours,

  1118. because we

  1119. do things

  1120. like skip

  1121. watching the

  1122. Super Bowl

  1123. to be with

  1124. God's people

  1125. on a Sunday

  1126. evening,

  1127. because we

  1128. don't let

  1129. sports get

  1130. in the way

  1131. of our

  1132. child's

  1133. spiritual

  1134. growth,

  1135. because we

  1136. don't go out

  1137. late on

  1138. Saturdays,

  1139. because we

  1140. care about

  1141. our activity

  1142. on Sunday

  1143. morning,

  1144. because we

  1145. don't go

  1146. along with

  1147. every narrative

  1148. taught to

  1149. us in

  1150. the classroom,

  1151. we don't

  1152. make the

  1153. best grades

  1154. sometimes,

  1155. because we

  1156. don't put

  1157. down the

  1158. answer the

  1159. professor wants

  1160. to hear,

  1161. because we

  1162. work extra

  1163. hard,

  1164. even at

  1165. menial tasks,

  1166. even when

  1167. no one is

  1168. watching,

  1169. because ladies,

  1170. you don't fit

  1171. in on the

  1172. beach,

  1173. because you

  1174. care about

  1175. modesty,

  1176. because you

  1177. would rather

  1178. serve others

  1179. than be

  1180. served,

  1181. because you

  1182. warn people

  1183. of their

  1184. certain

  1185. destruction

  1186. unless they

  1187. repent and

  1188. believe in

  1189. Jesus Christ.

  1190. Beloved,

  1191. there are so

  1192. many things,

  1193. these are

  1194. examples that

  1195. popped into

  1196. my head,

  1197. ways in which

  1198. we should be

  1199. living that

  1200. sets us apart

  1201. from this

  1202. world,

  1203. following in

  1204. the ways of

  1205. God,

  1206. being disciples

  1207. of Jesus

  1208. Christ,

  1209. is going to

  1210. make us

  1211. strange.

  1212. We should

  1213. suffer in the

  1214. world.

  1215. We ask this

  1216. question,

  1217. do you feel

  1218. more comfortable

  1219. in your

  1220. other spheres,

  1221. the other

  1222. circles that

  1223. you run in,

  1224. than you do

  1225. when you

  1226. come and

  1227. you're with

  1228. the church?

  1229. So many

  1230. times,

  1231. I've heard

  1232. the accusation,

  1233. people will

  1234. come here and

  1235. not come back

  1236. because they

  1237. don't make

  1238. them feel good

  1239. about themselves.

  1240. It's not my

  1241. job to make

  1242. you feel good

  1243. about yourself.

  1244. It's make

  1245. you feel good

  1246. about Jesus,

  1247. to love Him,

  1248. to see your

  1249. own failing.

  1250. But shouldn't

  1251. we walk in

  1252. here together

  1253. and feel

  1254. comfortable

  1255. in our

  1256. failing?

  1257. Shouldn't

  1258. we walk in

  1259. here together

  1260. and want

  1261. to be

  1262. together?

  1263. Because this

  1264. place is a

  1265. refuge where

  1266. we all come

  1267. together and

  1268. say we fail

  1269. in the way,

  1270. but we know

  1271. the way.

  1272. And we know

  1273. the way isn't

  1274. crazy.

  1275. Encourage me,

  1276. spur me on

  1277. in the way.

  1278. I want to

  1279. follow Jesus.

  1280. I want to be

  1281. like Him.

  1282. Shouldn't

  1283. this be where

  1284. we're most

  1285. comfortable?

  1286. Isn't this

  1287. why we come

  1288. together as the

  1289. church?

  1290. We might

  1291. encourage each

  1292. other in this

  1293. way,

  1294. we might press

  1295. each other on

  1296. to go back

  1297. out and to

  1298. keep fighting?

  1299. To go to a

  1300. place that's

  1301. hostile towards

  1302. us?

  1303. A place that

  1304. doesn't want to

  1305. hear the things

  1306. we have to say

  1307. because it's not

  1308. of the world?

  1309. The answer to all

  1310. these rhetorical

  1311. questions is a

  1312. resounding yes.

  1313. This should be

  1314. true of us.

  1315. This should be so

  1316. true of us.

  1317. James 1, 2-4.

  1318. James says,

  1319. Count it all

  1320. joy, my

  1321. brothers, when

  1322. you meet trials

  1323. of various kinds.

  1324. For you know

  1325. that the testing

  1326. of your faith

  1327. produces steadfastness

  1328. and let steadfastness

  1329. have its full effect

  1330. that you may be

  1331. perfect and

  1332. complete, lacking

  1333. in nothing.

1334. Do we want to be

  1335. driven on in our

  1336. faith?

  1337. Then welcome the

  1338. suffering.

  1339. I'm not suggesting

  1340. that you go and

  1341. seek the suffering,

  1342. but begin to

  1343. arrange your life

  1344. so that it looks

  1345. like the life of

  1346. Jesus and I

  1347. promise it will

  1348. come and count it

  1349. a joy when it

  1350. comes because you

  1351. will be purified by

  1352. it.

  1353. Your faith will be

  1354. increased by it.

  1355. Beloved, we are

1356. so far ahead of so

  1357. many others in the

  1358. Christian faith.

  1359. We have much to

  1360. rejoice in.

  1361. God has done good

  1362. things with us,

1363. but we are also a

  1364. long way from where

  1365. He would have us

  1366. be.

  1367. We have so much

  1368. changing to do

  1369. in our lives.

  1370. Casting off our

  1371. American Christian

  1372. culture and truly

  1373. being devoted to

  1374. the One who has

  1375. called us.

  1376. We see in the

  1377. summation of

  1378. chapter 10 a

  1379. beautiful picture of

  1380. calling.

  1381. As their journey

  1382. brings them to

  1383. Jericho, northeast of

  1384. Jerusalem, north of

1385. the Dead Sea, a man

  1386. named Bartimaeus

  1387. hears that He's

  1388. coming and he

  1389. cries out to Him

1390. and he cries out to

  1391. Him with a very

  1392. specific name,

  1393. Jesus, Son of

  1394. David.

  1395. That means that he

  1396. recognized that Jesus

1397. was the Son of God,

  1398. that He was the

  1399. Messiah.

  1400. He knew who

  1401. Jesus was.

  1402. And Jesus says in

  1403. verse 49,

  1404. call Him.

  1405. He hears the call

  1406. of the blind man

  1407. Bartimaeus and He

  1408. says to him,

  1409. call Him, and you

  1410. see in verse 52

  1411. that His sight is

  1412. restored.

  1413. It's immediately

  1414. recovered because of

  1415. His faith.

1416. I've said to you as

  1417. we've worked through

  1418. the second act that

  1419. it's bookended by

  1420. two accounts of

  1421. Jesus healing

  1422. blind men.

1423. We see the man at

  1424. Bethsaida, 8,

  1425. 22-26.

  1426. He's a man who's

  1427. healed in degrees

  1428. and he's brought

  1429. to Jesus by

  1430. others.

  1431. Brought to Him.

  1432. Not given a name

  1433. here.

  1434. And Jesus takes

  1435. him away and He

  1436. does two miracles.

  1437. He partly restores

  1438. the sight and then

  1439. He fully restores

  1440. His sight.

  1441. And then He sends

  1442. him off and says,

  1443. don't go into the

  1444. village.

  1445. Then we see

  1446. Bartimaeus who's

  1447. healed immediately.

  1448. And these things

  1449. seem to be, by

  1450. Mark's inspired

  1451. account, put it

  1452. either in, bookmarked

  1453. it either in, to

  1454. drive the point that

  1455. Jesus is not only

  1456. the miracle worker

  1457. over physical

  1458. blindness but over

  1459. spiritual as well.

1460. That He is the Lord

  1461. of spiritual blindness.

1462. And I just love the

  1463. picture of Bartimaeus

  1464. calling out to Him.

  1465. He calls him to

  1466. Himself.

  1467. He restores His

  1468. sight.

1469. And as He says to

  1470. him, verse 52,

  1471. go your way.

  1472. Your faith has

  1473. made you well.

  1474. And Mark's record

  1475. says, and immediately

  1476. He recovered a sight

  1477. and followed Him

  1478. on the way.

  1479. Bartimaeus' way

  1480. became Jesus' way

  1481. when Jesus restored

  1482. His sight.

  1483. When He made Him

  1484. whole once again.

1485. And so we can take

  1486. some confidence in

  1487. the fact that Jesus

  1488. is Lord over

  1489. spiritual blindness.

  1490. If we will simply

  1491. call out to Him,

  1492. put ourselves

  1493. at His mercy.

  1494. Paul said this

  1495. in Philippians 1.6,

1496. and I am sure of

  1497. this, that He who

  1498. began a good work

  1499. in you will bring

  1500. it to completion

  1501. at the day of

  1502. Jesus Christ.

1503. And so as we feel

  1504. bad about ourselves,

  1505. as we recognize

  1506. that we don't suffer

  1507. for the sake of

  1508. Jesus Christ and

  1509. the gospel the way

  1510. we should,

  1511. we can take

  1512. confidence in the

  1513. fact that He is

  1514. completing in us

  1515. the work that He

  1516. set out to begin,

  1517. that we are still

  1518. on a road of

  1519. sanctification,

  1520. that He has not

  1521. given up on us.

  1522. Let's pray together.
