  1. I always appreciate when you're asked to be seated.

  2. The chairs in the back half, the folding chairs with the pads on them,

  3. ! When you guys all sit down at the exact same time, they go...

  4. Have you ever heard that or not?

  5. Just to give you a little insight into my mind,

  6. if you've ever seen a guy do squats and he exhales before he pushes up,

  7. that's what I imagine all the chairs going...

  8. when you guys all sit down on them at the same time.

  9. Like that.

  10. Mark chapter 11.

    Mark 11 chapter mention

  11. I'm going to begin reading to you in verse 11.

  12. And he, being Jesus, entered Jerusalem and went into the temple.

  13. And when he had looked around at everything, as it was already late,

  14. he went out to Bethany with the twelve.

  15. On the following day, when they came from Bethany, he was hungry.

  16. And seeing in the distance a fig tree and leaf,

  17. he went to see if he could find anything on it.

  18. When he came to it, he found nothing but leaves, for it was not the season for figs.

  19. And he said to it,

  20. May no one ever eat fruit from you again.

  21. And his disciples heard it.

  22. And they came to Jerusalem, and he entered the temple and began to drive out those who sold and those who bought in the temple.

  23. And he overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who sold pigeons.

  24. And he would not allow anyone to carry anything through the temple.

  25. And he was teaching them and saying to them,

  26. Is it not written,

  27. My house shall be called a house of prayer for all the nations,

  28. but you have made it a den of robbers.

  29. And the chief priests and the scribes heard it and were seeking a way to destroy him,

  30. for they feared him, because all the crowd was astonished at his teaching.

  31. And when evening came, they went out of the city.

  32. As they passed by in the morning,

  33. they saw the fig tree withered away to its roots.

  34. And people remembered and said to him,

  35. Rabbi, look, the fig tree that you cursed has withered.

  36. This is God's word to us,

  37. written for his glory and our good.

  38. We would all do well to listen to it in order to believe its promises

  39. and obey its commands.

  40. Let's pray together.

  41. Father God, we do thank you this morning for your word.

  42. And this is the expression,

  43. the physical thing that we gather around today,

  44. because it speaks of Jesus, the word of God.

  45. It points us to him.

  46. And every single word, every verse,

  47. every passage points us to the one, Jesus Christ.

  48. And we thank you for the gospel of Mark

  49. that we have been able to behold the life,

  50. the practice, the words of Jesus here.

  51. And I pray, Father, this morning,

  52. that you will have your way with us

  53. as we sit under the instruction of your word.

  54. That you will shape our hearts.

  55. That you will make us look more like Christ

  56. for your glory and for our good.

  57. And we pray this in Jesus' name.

  58. Amen.

  59. Amen.

  60. So, interestingly, here we find,

  61. in Mark's gospel,

  62. kind of a bookend literary technique.

  63. We see a story framed within a story.

  64. And it would seem that this is meant to help us

  65. interpret both events properly.

  66. There can be some confusion about the chronology of these events.

  67. In Matthew chapter 21,

    Matthew 21 chapter mention

  68. they're not recorded in this way,

  69. in this bookended fashion.

  70. But rather, the temple cleansing happens,

  71. and then the fig tree event happens.

  72. And Matthew records that it withers at once.

  73. Jesus curses it,

  74. and it withers right away.

  75. Some people get very troubled by this,

  76. that the chronology is different

  77. in Matthew's gospel

  78. and in Mark's gospel.

  79. And let me just say to you,

  80. pastorally,

  81. please don't let your hearts be troubled

  82. by such things.

  83. I believe that the chronology

  84. probably happened in reality

  85. the way Matthew records it,

  86. but that Mark,

  87. under inspiration,

  88. records it for us in this way

  89. to highlight the meanings for us,

  90. to help us better understand.

  91. It doesn't mean that the meaning

  92. has changed

  93. by any stretch of the imagination,

  94. but simply that he's trying

  95. to better help us understand

  96. the greater purposes

  97. of these two stories

  98. in the Gospels.

  99. The fact that it happened

  100. is recorded by both Matthew and Mark.

  101. Both of these events

  102. did indeed happen.

  103. And so here we find ourselves

  104. in Mark's gospel account.

  105. Verse 11,

  106. at the end of Jesus' triumphal entry,

  107. he goes into Jerusalem

  108. and into the temple,

  109. and he has a look around.

  110. It's kind of a scouting trip for him.

  111. He goes in to see

  112. what has been happening

  113. in the temple,

  114. but it's late at this hour

  115. and people have gone home

  116. at this time,

  117. and so they return back to Bethany,

  118. to the house of Mary and Martha

  119. is where they're staying

  120. at this time.

  121. And they had back out.

  122. And the following morning

  123. in verse 12,

  124. we see that they had now back in.

  125. And we see this wonderful expression

  126. of Jesus' humanity

  127. that he is hungry.

  128. He's hungry to the degree

  129. that he's rather frustrated

  130. when he doesn't find

  131. the food that he needs

  132. for his hunger.

  133. And we may ask,

  134. does Jesus not eat breakfast

  135. before he heads off

  136. for an important day?

  137. He had a big day ahead of him.

  138. Certainly, we should all eat breakfast

  139. before big important days.

  140. And it's likely that Mary and Martha

  141. and their production of food,

  142. their providing for all

  143. that the disciples needed,

  144. that Jesus missed this

  145. because it was his habit

  146. to go out early in the morning

  147. and to pray.

  148. This is conjecture on my part.

  149. Please hear me.

  150. The text doesn't state this to us.

  151. But I would assume that Jesus,

  152. knowing what was confronting him

  153. that week,

  154. we're in the Passion Week,

  155. the very week that he'll be crucified,

  156. was extra fervent in prayer,

  157. that he was out on his knees

  158. before the Lord,

  159. making sure that he was walking

  160. properly before him.

  161. He also knew what he was about

  162. to go do at the temple.

  163. You remember the evening before,

  164. he had gone in and scouted it out.

  165. He had seen the tables

  166. of the money changers

  167. and those who were selling

  168. the pigeons and the doves.

  169. And he knew what he was coming back in

  170. to do.

  171. And so, likely,

  172. again conjecture,

  173. he missed breakfast.

  174. And so he's hungry.

  175. He was a man,

  176. fully human,

  177. and experienced all of the same

  178. pains that we do in life.

  179. So he sees,

  180. from far off,

  181. a fig tree in leaf,

  182. in verse 13.

  183. Now, it's interesting as we read this

  184. because he arrives at this tree

  185. that has no figs on it,

  186. and Mark records for us

  187. that it's not the season for figs.

  188. And so it seems interesting

  189. when you first look at the text

  190. because you say,

  191. how is it that Jesus got upset

  192. at a thing,

  193. created thing,

  194. following its proper order,

  195. that had not created food

  196. for him to eat?

  197. How was it that he was

  198. so upset at it

  199. that he curses it

  200. so that it'll never produce fruit

  201. again,

  202. knowing full well

  203. the case that it should be in?

  204. And the point is,

  205. you've got to look a little bit,

  206. you've got to dig a little deeper,

  207. and you've got to understand figs.

  208. I had to do this.

  209. I don't know anything about figs

  210. until this past two weeks.

  211. A fig tree puts on fruit

  212. before it puts on leaves.

  213. So the fruit is first produced.

  214. The fig puts its energy

  215. into producing the fruit

  216. first,

  217. and then the leaves,

  218. and then the fruit

  219. begins to mature.

  220. Now remember,

  221. this is Passover week.

  222. On our calendar,

  223. March or April,

  224. sometime in this span,

  225. which is when the fruits

  226. would have come on

  227. to the fig tree,

  228. followed by the leaf.

  229. But those fruits

  230. wouldn't have come

  231. to full maturity

  232. until somewhere

  233. between August and October.

  234. So in the fall

  235. is when the ripened fruit

  236. was actually harvested.

  237. However,

  238. people in this day

  239. would eat the green fruit

  240. from the fig tree,

  241. particularly if they were

  242. very hungry.

  243. So what Mark is telling us

  244. is it's not the full time.

  245. It's not the fall.

  246. It's not the fall.

  247. It's the full ripe fruit

  248. shouldn't be on this thing yet,

  249. but the green ones

  250. should have been

  251. because the tree is in leaf.

  252. That's why that is recorded for us

  253. that the fig tree is in leaf.

  254. So Jesus would have expected

  255. that there would have been

  256. small, hard, green fruit

  257. that would have satisfied

  258. his hunger.

  259. So the fruit comes first

  260. and second comes the leaf.

  261. And it's an important thing

  262. to understand

  263. about why he would have

  264. expected fruit.

  265. In verse 14,

  266. when he doesn't find it,

  267. we see Jesus'

  268. only destructive miracle,

  269. that is,

  270. he produced lots of miracles

  271. that were always constructive

  272. or reconstructive,

  273. healing people,

  274. but this is the only one

  275. where he produces a miracle

  276. that actually destroys something

  277. as he utters a curse

  278. against the tree.

  279. We know it's a curse

  280. because down in verse 21

  281. it says,

  282. And Peter remembered

  283. and said to him,

  284. Rabbi, look,

  285. the fig tree that you cursed

  286. has withered.

  287. The curse he utters is,

  288. May no one ever eat fruit

  289. from you again.

  290. It seems a little bit

  291. like a spiteful act

  292. against the tree,

  293. doesn't it?

  294. Like, why is Jesus

  295. so frustrated

  296. and so upset

  297. that he curses a tree?

  298. Is this some type

  299. of random act of anger

  300. on behalf of our Lord?

  301. No.

  302. Of course,

  303. the answer is no

  304. to that question.

  305. Jesus' curse on the tree

  306. was meant to prefigure

  307. the destruction

  308. of the fruitless.

  309. He's displaying something

  310. for the disciples

  311. to see.

  312. Does Jesus ultimately care

  313. about the life of the tree?

  314. No, he doesn't.

  315. Was he so frustrated

  316. that he had to take out

  317. his anger on the tree?

  318. No, he didn't.

  319. He's doing something here

  320. to teach the disciples

  321. and therefore us

  322. something as well.

  323. The coming destruction

  324. of the fruitless,

  325. of those who do not

  326. bear fruit.

  327. Now, our minds,

  328. as the fastidious students,

  329. I'm sure we all are

  330. of the Scriptures,

  331. likely go to

  332. New Testament texts.

  333. Places like

  334. Matthew 7,

  335. the Sermon on the Mount,

  336. verses 17-19.

  337. So,

  338. every healthy tree

  339. bears good fruit.

  340. The diseased tree

  341. bears bad fruit.

  342. A healthy tree

  343. cannot bear bad fruit,

  344. nor can a diseased tree

  345. bear good fruit.

  346. Every tree that does not

  347. bear good fruit

  348. is cut down

  349. and thrown into the fire.

  350. Or John 15,

    John 15:5

  351. verses 5 and 6.

  352. Jesus says,

  353. I am the vine,

  354. you are the branches.

  355. Whoever abides in me

  356. and I in him,

  357. he it is that bears

  358. much fruit.

  359. For apart from me

  360. you can do nothing.

  361. So those who are in Christ

  362. produce good fruit.

  363. verse 6 says,

  364. if anyone does not

  365. abide in me,

  366. he is thrown away

  367. like a branch

  368. and withers.

  369. And the branches

  370. are gathered,

  371. thrown into the fire

  372. and burned.

  373. So there's a judgment

  374. that comes on those

  375. in Matthew 7

  376. who don't bear

  377. good fruit,

  378. fruit that accords

  379. with godliness.

  380. And in John 15,

  381. those who bear

  382. no fruit at all,

  383. who are cut off

  384. from the life-giving

  385. force of the vine,

  386. and wither

  387. and are thrown

  388. into the fire.

  389. The judgment comes.

  390. Now,

  391. the apostles

  392. wouldn't have had

  393. our New Testament text

  394. as part of their scriptures,

  395. but they also,

  396. as students of the scriptures,

  397. would have gone

  398. to their scriptures,

  399. the Old Testament texts.

  400. Ones like Jeremiah 8.13

  401. When I would gather them,

  402. declares the Lord,

  403. there are no grapes

  404. on the vine,

  405. nor figs

  406. on the fig tree.

  407. Even the leaves

  408. are withered,

  409. and what I gave them

  410. has passed away from them.

  411. Jeremiah is proclaiming

  412. judgment on Israel.

  413. Jeremiah 24.

  414. Jeremiah has a vision

  415. of Israel's judgment

  416. in terms of good figs

  417. versus bad figs.

  418. In Hosea 9.10,

  419. Like grapes in the wilderness

  420. I found Israel,

  421. like the first fruit

  422. on the fig tree

  423. in its first season

  424. I saw your fathers.

  425. But they came to Baal Peor

  426. and consecrated themselves

  427. to the things of shame

  428. and became detestable

  429. like the things they loved.

  430. Verse 16 and 17.

  431. Ephraim,

  432. another name

  433. for the northern tribe,

  434. is stricken.

  435. Their root is dried up.

  436. They shall bear no fruit.

  437. Even though they give birth,

  438. I will put their beloved children

  439. to death.

  440. My God will reject them

  441. because they have not listened to Him.

  442. They shall be wanders

  443. among the nations.

  444. So they would have been

  445. very familiar

  446. with this imagery.

  447. They would have understood

  448. that Jesus proclaiming judgment

  449. on the fig tree

  450. was a foreshadowing

  451. of the judgment

  452. that would come

  453. to the fruitless.

  454. In either case,

  455. New Testament or Old,

  456. the theme holds.

  457. Those who are fruitless

  458. will be judged.

  459. And so we must ask the question

  460. at this point,

  461. do you bear fruit?

  462. I must ask the question to myself,

  463. do I bear fruit?

  464. We should examine our fruit.

  465. Now our fruit does not give us

  466. merit before God.

  467. It doesn't give us merit.

  468. It doesn't earn.

  469. I don't have a big basket of fruit

  470. and I have enough fruit,

  471. enough good working

  472. out of my life

  473. that He'll put it on a scale

  474. and say,

  475. your good fruit

  476. outweighs your bad fruit.

  477. Welcome to my kingdom.

  478. This is not what's happening.

  479. We're not meriting ourselves

  480. to Him.

  481. If you are found in Christ,

  482. God is pleased with you

  483. because of the righteousness

  484. of Christ.

  485. This is the beauty

  486. of the Gospel.

  487. Because none of us

  488. are ever going to be able

  489. to amass enough good fruit

  490. to outweigh the bad fruit.

  491. This is not a possibility

  492. for us to earn our way.

  493. But if we are in Christ,

  494. we have been made perfect

  495. in Him.

  496. This is the glorious truth

  497. that God is pleased with us

  498. regardless,

  499. that nothing takes us

  500. out of His hand,

  501. that when He looks at us,

  502. He sees Jesus.

  503. Even when we fail,

  504. even when we bear

  505. the guilt of that,

  506. we know that we've failed,

  507. we know that we don't walk

  508. in the way that we should walk.

  509. He looks at us

  510. and He is pleased.

  511. Beloved,

  512. this is precious

  513. for us to know.

  514. This is what enables us

  515. when we fall flat

  516. on our faces,

  517. when we commit

  518. grievous sin

  519. against God,

  520. to stand back up

  521. and look at Him

  522. to repent,

  523. to enter back

  524. into His presence,

  525. to be back in relationship

  526. with Him

  527. because Christ

  528. has purchased that

  529. for us.

  530. This is the reality

  531. of those of us

  532. who have placed

  533. believing faith

  534. in Jesus Christ.

  535. However,

  536. we are instructed,

  537. we are meant

  538. to test that salvation,

  539. to be sure of it,

  540. to know without a doubt

  541. that we are found

  542. in Christ

  543. by what?

  544. Our fruit.

  545. the outworking

  546. of the reality

  547. of who we are.

  548. Old has passed away.

  549. New has come.

  550. Right?

  551. I am now a good tree.

  552. I was once a bad tree

  553. and I produced bad fruit,

  554. but I am now a good tree

  555. and therefore

  556. I produce good fruit.

  557. But I should examine that.

  558. 2 Corinthians 13.5

  559. Paul says,

  560. examine yourselves

  561. to see whether you are

  562. in the faith.

  563. He's writing to the church.

  564. Those that we would all

  565. presume were in the faith.

  566. He says,

  567. examine yourselves.

  568. Test yourselves.

  569. Or do you not realize

  570. this about yourselves,

  571. that Jesus Christ

  572. is in you

  573. unless indeed

  574. you fail to meet

  575. the test?

  576. The test is this

  577. issue of fruit,

  578. which is ultimately

  579. an issue

  580. of worship.

  581. How do you spend

  582. your life?

  583. What do you ultimately

  584. care about?

  585. How do you

  586. align everything

  587. that you have

  588. and all that you do

  589. to show that you

  590. worship the one

  591. true God?

  592. You don't worship

  593. yourself.

  594. You don't worship

  595. the things of this world.

  596. You worship God.

  597. This is what God

  598. is concerned about

  599. in the Old Testament.

  600. Obedience to the law

  601. was ultimately

  602. an act of worship.

  603. Aligning the Old Testament

  604. peoples,

  605. aligning themselves

  606. with God,

  607. worshipped Him

  608. by obeying His law.

  609. This is what God

  610. is concerned

  611. within the New Testament.

  612. This is what Jesus

  613. is concerned about.

  614. It's heart worship

  615. worship that matters.

  616. He could have spoken

  617. about all kinds

  618. of things.

  619. We're now in the

  620. 11th chapter of Mark.

  621. We've come through

  622. 10 chapters already

  623. and we've seen Jesus

  624. teach on numerous

  625. occasions.

  626. He could have spoken

  627. about lots of things.

  628. Political issues,

  629. social issues,

  630. there were troubles

  631. in this day.

  632. He could have spoken

  633. to all of those things.

  634. He would have had

  635. wisdom for all of

  636. those things,

  637. but He instead spoke

  638. repeatedly about

  639. heart worship.

  640. He knew that if we

  641. would align ourselves

  642. with God,

  643. that all those things

  644. would begin to sort

  645. themselves out.

  646. The primary thing

  647. reigns over those

  648. secondary things.

  649. Jesus constantly

  650. pressed at people.

  651. You were created

  652. for something.

  653. God is calling you

  654. back to Him.

  655. Worship Him

  656. from the heart.

  657. It's not merely

  658. the exterior that

  659. matters,

  660. but the interior.

  661. Let's look at one

  662. example.

  663. We should turn back

  664. to Mark chapter 7.

    Mark 7 chapter mention

  665. There's one example

  666. of His teaching on this.

  667. Begin reading in verse 14.

  668. And He called the people

  669. to Him again and said

  670. to them,

  671. Hear me,

  672. all of you,

  673. and understand.

  674. There is nothing

  675. outside a person

  676. that by going into Him

  677. can defile Him,

  678. but the things that

  679. come out of a person

  680. are what defile Him.

  681. The fruit, right?

  682. And when He had

  683. entered the house

  684. and left the people,

  685. His disciples asked Him

  686. about the parable.

  687. And He said to them,

  688. Then are you also

  689. without understanding?

  690. Do you not see

  691. that whatever goes

  692. into a person

  693. from outside

  694. cannot defile Him

  695. since it enters

  696. not His heart

  697. but His stomach

  698. and is expelled?

  699. Thus He declared

  700. all foods clean.

  701. Mark's little

  702. parenthetical

  703. addition

  704. commentary.

  705. Jesus is saying

  706. all of these regulations

  707. about food,

  708. don't you see that

  709. this isn't what

  710. changes your heart

  711. because it just goes

  712. into your stomach

  713. and goes back

  714. out of you.

  715. Verse 20,

  716. And He said,

  717. What comes out

  718. of a person

  719. is what defiles Him?

  720. For from within

  721. out of the heart

  722. of man

  723. come evil thoughts,

  724. sexual immorality,

  725. theft,

  726. murder,

  727. adultery,

  728. coveting,

  729. wickedness,

  730. deceit,

  731. sensuality,

  732. envy,

  733. slander,

  734. pride,

  735. foolishness.

  736. All these evil things

  737. come from within

  738. and they defile a person.

  739. So the evidences

  740. of someone's heart

  741. not being shaped by God,

  742. not being made new

  743. in Christ

  744. is the bad stuff

  745. that's coming out of them.

  746. Those things

  747. that are not

  748. fruits of the Spirit

  749. but are rather

  750. fruits of the flesh.

  751. This issue

  752. is pressed

  753. constantly throughout

  754. the Gospel account.

  755. It's pressed in all

  756. the Scriptures

  757. as a matter of fact

  758. that true worship

  759. of God

  760. is an issue

  761. of our hearts.

  762. That works out

  763. in proper ways.

  764. Hear me say that.

  765. It works out

  766. in proper ways

  767. but it's primarily

  768. about our hearts

  769. and the fruit

  770. is the way

  771. in which

  772. we test this.

  773. The issue

  774. is continued

  775. in Jesus' activity

  776. in the temple

  777. picking back up

  778. in verse 15.

  779. You see,

  780. the temple

  781. was at the heart

  782. of Israel's worship.

  783. Metaphorically,

  784. it was the heart

  785. of the nation.

  786. Just as proper worship

  787. now proceeds

  788. from our hearts

  789. figuratively

  790. and in a practical sense,

  791. proper worship

  792. proceeded from the temple.

  793. If the leaders

  794. of the temple

  795. were corrupt

  796. then the people

  797. of God

  798. were also corrupted.

  799. This was a truth

  800. in this day.

  801. The apostasy began

  802. at the temple

  803. and this is what

  804. Jesus is going in

  805. to sort out

  806. and to cleanse

  807. from this place.

  808. This is why

  809. and this is much debated

  810. I'll tell you

  811. but this is why

  812. I believe

  813. that Jesus

  814. started His ministry

  815. with the cleansing

  816. of the temple

  817. and then ends it

  818. here

  819. as He's wrapping

  820. things up

  821. with a second

  822. cleansing

  823. of the temple.

  824. Now I'll tell you

  825. there's a lot

  826. of argument

  827. about this kind

  828. of thing

  829. but John

  830. records it

  831. very early

  832. in his gospel

  833. account

  834. John chapter 2

    John 2:13–17

  835. verses 13

  836. through 17

  837. it seems

  838. that Jesus

  839. goes and makes

  840. a side journey

  841. takes off

  842. goes to Jerusalem

  843. does some temple

  844. cleansing

  845. in that account

  846. we see that

  847. He makes a

  848. whip of cords

  849. I love this one

  850. He's so frustrated

  851. that He braids

  852. up something

  853. and drives people

  854. out in this

  855. account here

  856. there's a different

  857. record of what

  858. said to Him

  859. and what proceeds

  860. after what happens

  861. in the actual

  862. temple event

  863. so I think

  864. He began it

  865. here

  866. He spends

  867. three years

  868. ministering to

  869. the people of

  870. Israel

  871. and He comes

  872. back now

  873. and I think

  874. this is why

  875. He went in

  876. to scout out

  877. what was going

  878. on

  879. He's back

  880. again

  881. on the Passover

  882. week

  883. He's going

  884. to see if

  885. they've sorted

  886. things out

  887. in Israel

  888. or not

  889. He's sorely

  890. disappointed

  891. so He goes

  892. in to cleanse

  893. it once

  894. again

  895. an interesting

  896. parable that

  897. he tells

  898. which I think

  899. gives us

  900. some clue

  901. to the

  902. validity

  903. of my stance

  904. here

  905. is Luke

    Luke 13:6–9

  906. chapter 13

  907. verses 6

  908. through 9

  909. he says

  910. and he told

  911. this parable

  912. a man had

  913. a fig tree

  914. planted in his

  915. vineyard

  916. and he came

  917. seeking fruit

  918. on it

  919. and found

  920. none

  921. first cleansing

  922. he came

  923. seeking fruit

  924. on it

  925. he found

  926. none

  927. and he said

  928. to the

  929. vine dresser

  930. look

  931. for three

  932. years now

  933. I have

  934. come

  935. seeking fruit

  936. on this

  937. fig tree

  938. and I

  939. find

  940. none

  941. cut it

  942. down

  943. why

  944. should

  945. it

  946. use

  947. up

  948. the

  949. ground

  950. and he

  951. answered

  952. him

  953. sir

  954. let it

  955. alone

  956. this

  957. year

  958. also

  959. until I

  960. dig

  961. around

  962. it

  963. and put

  964. more

  965. on

  966. manure

  967. then it

  968. should

  969. bear

  970. fruit

  971. next

  972. year

  973. well

  974. and

  975. good

  976. but if

  977. not

  978. you

  979. can

  980. cut

  981. it

  982. down

  983. so

  984. you

  985. see

  986. this

  987. three

  988. year

  989. gap

  990. he even

  991. speaks

  992. about

  993. in this

  994. end

  995. why

  996. because

  997. he had

  998. taught

  999. them

  1000. the way

  1001. they

  1002. should

  1003. align

  1004. their

  1005. hearts

  1006. he taught

  1007. them

  1008. the proper

  1009. fruit

  1010. that should

  1011. proceed

  1012. and they

  1013. had yet

  1014. to do

  1015. it

  1016. so he

  1017. does at

  1018. the beginning

  1019. he concludes

  1020. the ministry

  1021. with his

  1022. miracles

  1023. cleansing

  1024. the temple

  1025. we've got

  1026. one more

  1027. miracle

  1028. which is

  1029. the miracle

  1030. of the

  1031. resurrection

  1032. but except

  1033. for that

  1034. we don't

  1035. see any

  1036. other

  1037. miracles

  1038. in

  1039. Mark's

  1040. gospel

  1041. account

  1042. this is

  1043. the last

  1044. one

  1045. except

  1046. for

  1047. the

  1048. resurrection

  1049. that he

  1050. does

  1051. Jesus

  1052. was upset

  1053. about the

  1054. improper

  1055. use

  1056. of the

  1057. court

  1058. of the

  1059. Gentiles

  1060. this is

  1061. the

  1062. outer

  1063. court

  1064. of the

  1065. temple

  1066. of the

  1067. worship

  1068. the

  1069. Gentiles

  1070. were allowed

  1071. in this

  1072. arena

  1073. of the

  1074. court

  1075. we see

  1076. that there

  1077. are money

  1078. changers

  1079. there

  1080. they were

  1081. turning

  1082. various

  1083. currencies

  1084. into

  1085. Tyrian

  1086. coinage

  1087. this was

  1088. the coinage

  1089. that was

  1090. accepted

  1091. in temple

  1092. worship

  1093. they were

  1094. selling

  1095. pigeons

  1096. or

  1097. doves

  1098. which were

  1099. required

  1100. for

  1101. sacrifice

  1102. Leviticus

  1103. 5

  1104. 7

  1105. says

  1106. but if

  1107. he

  1108. cannot

  1109. afford

  1110. a

  1111. lamb

  1112. then

  1113. he

  1114. shall

  1115. bring

  1116. to

  1117. the

  1118. Lord

  1119. as his

  1120. compensation

  1121. for the

  1122. sin

  1123. that he

  1124. has

  1125. committed

  1126. two

  1127. turtle

  1128. doves

  1129. or two

  1130. pigeons

  1131. one

  1132. for a

  1133. sin

  1134. offering

  1135. and the

  1136. other

  1137. for a

  1138. burnt

  1139. offering

  1140. so

  1141. these

  1142. activities

  1143. would have

  1144. been

  1145. things

  1146. that

  1147. needed

  1148. to

  1149. happen

  1150. people

  1151. would have

  1152. needed

  1153. to

  1154. purchase

  1155. a

  1156. turtle

  1157. dove

  1158. or

  1159. purchase

  1160. pigeons

  1161. they

  1162. would have

  1163. needed

  1164. their

  1165. coinage

  1166. to see

  1167. that

  1168. Jesus

  1169. actually

  1170. drives

  1171. out

  1172. both

  1173. those

  1174. who

  1175. sold

  1176. and

  1177. those

  1178. who

  1179. bought

  1180. so

  1181. it

  1182. would

  1183. actually

  1184. seem

  1185. that

  1186. the

  1187. activity

  1188. itself

  1189. wasn't

  1190. so

  1191. sinful

  1192. that

  1193. these

  1194. things

  1195. were

  1196. permitted

  1197. to

  1198. happen

  1199. but

  1200. not

  1201. in

  1202. this

  1203. place

  1204. they

  1205. had

  1206. come

  1207. into

  1208. a

  1209. place

  1210. that

  1211. was

  1212. meant

  1213. for

  1214. something

  1215. altogether

  1216. different

  1217. and

  1218. they

  1219. had

  1220. turned

  1221. it

  1222. into

  1223. a

  1224. place

  1225. for

  1226. the

  1227. exchanging

  1228. of

  1229. money

  1230. for

  1231. the

  1232. extortion

  1233. of

  1234. God

  1235. the

  1236. court

  1237. was

  1238. also

  1239. not

  1240. to

  1241. be

  1242. used

  1243. as

  1244. a

  1245. thoroughfare

  1246. he

  1247. stopped

  1248. people

  1249. from

  1250. cutting

  1251. the

  1252. corner

  1253. around

  1254. the

  1255. temple

  1256. and

  1257. cutting

  1258. across

  1259. this

  1260. temple

  1261. court

  1262. on

  1263. the

  1264. outside

  1265. and

  1266. then

  1267. we

  1268. get

  1269. some

  1270. clue

  1271. that

  1272. it's

  1273. possible

  1274. that

  1275. there

  1276. was

  1277. some

  1278. unfair

  1279. trade

  1280. happening

  1281. because

  1282. he

  1283. says

  1284. in

  1285. verse

  1286. 17

  1287. at

  1288. the

  1289. end

  1290. but

  1291. you

  1292. have

  1293. made

  1294. it

  1295. a

  1296. den

  1297. of

  1298. robbers

  1299. so

  1300. lightly

  1301. there

  1302. was

  1303. beyond

  1304. the

  1305. fair

  1306. exchange

  1307. of

  1308. money

  1309. and

  1310. selling

  1311. of

  1312. these

  1313. sacrificial

  1314. animals

  1315. they

  1316. were

  1317. extorting

  1318. people

  1319. above

  1320. and

  1321. beyond

  1322. what

  1323. they

  1324. should

  1325. have

  1326. been

  1327. to

  1328. do

  1329. this

  1330. thing

  1331. but

  1332. he

  1333. is

  1334. altogether

  1335. displeased

  1336. with

  1337. what

  1338. is

  1339. happening

  1340. in

  1341. the

  1342. court

  1343. and

  1344. he

  1345. drives

  1346. them

  1347. out

  1348. people

  1349. could

  1350. have

  1351. been

  1352. there

  1353. so

  1354. the

  1355. fact

  1356. that

  1357. he

  1358. drove

  1359. people

  1360. out

  1361. probably

  1362. mean

  1363. he

  1364. kind

  1365. of

  1366. herded

  1367. them

  1368. out

  1369. and

  1370. that's

  1371. something

  1372. I

  1373. would

  1374. have

  1375. loved

  1376. to

  1377. have

  1378. seen

  1379. both

  1380. the

  1381. account

  1382. with

  1383. the

  1384. whip

  1385. and

  1386. then

  1387. him

  1388. flipping

  1389. over

  1390. tables

  1391. in

  1392. his

  1393. anger

  1394. and

  1395. pressing

  1396. people

  1397. out

  1398. of

  1399. this

  1400. place

  1401. I

  1402. mean

  1403. one

  1404. man

  1405. couldn't

  1406. have

  1407. done

  1408. this

  1409. by

  1410. his

  1411. own

  1412. human

  1413. physical

  1414. strength

  1415. it

  1416. was

  1417. probably

  1418. because

  1419. he

  1420. was

  1421. mean

  1422. that

  1423. we

  1424. have

  1425. righteous

  1426. anger

  1427. we

  1428. could

  1429. wrongly

  1430. do

  1431. that

  1432. the

  1433. main

  1434. point

  1435. of

  1436. this

  1437. text

  1438. now

  1439. I

  1440. would

  1441. exhort

  1442. you

  1443. that

  1444. at

  1445. times

  1446. speaking

  1447. the

  1448. truth

  1449. in

  1450. loves

  1451. means

  1452. turning

  1453. over

  1454. a few

  1455. tables

  1456. there's

  1457. actually

  1458. not

  1459. enough

  1460. of

  1461. that

  1462. in

  1463. our

  1464. culture

  1465. today

  1466. people

  1467. who

  1468. are

  1469. willing

  1470. to

  1471. contend

  1472. for

  1473. the

  1474. truth

  1475. people

  1476. who

  1477. are

  1478. willing

  1479. to

  1480. toss

  1481. a

  1482. table

  1483. now

  1484. and

  1485. then

  1486. and

  1487. stand

  1488. up

  1489. for

  1490. the

  1491. Lord

  1492. we

  1493. need

  1494. more

  1495. of

  1496. this

  1497. we

  1498. need

  1499. mighty

  1500. men

  1501. right

  1502. not

  1503. mansy

  1504. pansy

  1505. Christians

  1506. but

  1507. people

  1508. who

  1509. will

  1510. stand

  1511. firm

  1512. on

  1513. the

  1514. word

  1515. of

  1516. God

  1517. and

  1518. do

  1519. what

  1520. is

  1521. necessary

  1522. to

  1523. correct

  1524. doctrine

  1525. at

  1526. times

  1527. in

  1528. love

  1529. these

  1530. things

  1531. should

  1532. be

  1533. done

  1534. we

  1535. should

  1536. not

  1537. primarily

  1538. make

  1539. Jesus

  1540. action

  1541. here

  1542. about

  1543. setting

  1544. an

  1545. example

  1546. for

  1547. our

  1548. zeal

  1549. although

  1550. true

  1551. we

  1552. shouldn't

  1553. make

  1554. it

  1555. primarily

  1556. about

  1557. that

  1558. I

  1559. want

  1560. you

  1561. to

  1562. !

  1563. me

  1564. to

  1565. the

  1566. Old

  1567. Testament

  1568. book

  1569. of

  1570. Nehemiah

  1571. I

  1572. want

  1573. to

  1574. share

  1575. with

  1576. you

  1577. a

  1578. story

  1579. that

  1580. I

  1581. particularly

  1582. love

  1583. I

  1584. realized

  1585. in

  1586. this

  1587. past

  1588. few

  1589. weeks

  1590. that

  1591. when

  1592. we

  1593. preach

  1594. through

  1595. the

  1596. book

  1597. of

  1598. Nehemiah

  1599. that's

  1600. now

  1601. been

  1602. two

  1603. summers

  1604. ago

  1605. which

  1606. just

  1607. kind

  1608. of

  1609. made

  1610. my

  1611. head

  1612. explode

  1613. Nehemiah

  1614. is

  1615. a

  1616. prophet

  1617. of

  1618. God

  1619. who

  1620. has

  1621. returned

  1622. to

  1623. Israel

  1624. he

  1625. has

  1626. been

  1627. the

  1628. cup

  1629. bearer

  1630. for

  1631. King

  1632. Artaxerxes

  1633. the

  1634. Persian

  1635. king

  1636. and

  1637. King

  1638. Artaxerxes

  1639. has

  1640. begun

  1641. to

  1642. let

  1643. the

  1644. Israelites

  1645. go

  1646. back

  1647. to

  1648. the

  1649. nation

  1650. and

  1651. they

  1652. have

  1653. yet

  1654. to

  1655. rebuild

  1656. Jerusalem

  1657. so the

  1658. major

  1659. activity

  1660. of

  1661. Nehemiah

  1662. is

  1663. he

  1664. goes

  1665. back

  1666. and

  1667. he

  1668. leads

  1669. the

  1670. people

  1671. in

  1672. rebuilding

  1673. the

  1674. city

  1675. which

  1676. was

  1677. the

  1678. visible

  1679. way

  1680. in

  1681. which

  1682. people

  1683. saw

  1684. the

  1685. glory

  1686. of

  1687. God

  1688. like

  1689. how

  1690. are

  1691. the

  1692. people

  1693. of

  1694. Israel

  1695. doing

  1696. so

  1697. he

  1698. went

  1699. back

  1700. and

  1701. he

  1702. built

  1703. the

  1704. wall

  1705. they

  1706. rebuilt

  1707. the

  1708. temple

  1709. at

  1710. this

  1711. time

  1712. and

  1713. he

  1714. had

  1715. some

  1716. antagonists

  1717. all

  1718. throughout

  1719. the

  1720. story

  1721. one

  1722. of

  1723. those

  1724. antagonists

  1725. was

  1726. a

  1727. guy

  1728. named

  1729. 13

  1730. we

  1731. see

  1732. that

  1733. Nehemiah

  1734. goes

  1735. back

  1736. to

  1737. King

  1738. Artaxerxes

  1739. for a

  1740. time

  1741. and

  1742. some

  1743. things

  1744. transpire

  1745. in

  1746. that

  1747. time

  1748. beginning

  1749. in

  1750. verse

  1751. 4

  1752. now

  1753. before

  1754. this

  1755. Eliashib

  1756. the

  1757. priest

  1758. who

  1759. was

  1760. appointed

  1761. over

  1762. the

  1763. chambers

  1764. of

  1765. the

  1766. house

  1767. of

  1768. our

  1769. God

  1770. and

  1771. who

  1772. was

  1773. related

  1774. to

  1775. Tobiah

  1776. prepared

  1777. for

  1778. Tobiah

  1779. a

  1780. large

  1781. chamber

  1782. where

  1783. they

  1784. had

  1785. previously

  1786. put

  1787. the

  1788. grain

  1789. offering

  1790. the

  1791. frankincense

  1792. the

  1793. vessels

  1794. and

  1795. the

  1796. tithes

  1797. of

  1798. grain

  1799. wine

  1800. and

  1801. oil

  1802. which

  1803. were

  1804. given

  1805. by

  1806. commandment

  1807. to

  1808. the

  1809. Levites

  1810. singers

  1811. and

  1812. gatekeepers

  1813. and

  1814. the

  1815. contributions

  1816. for

  1817. the

  1818. priests

  1819. now

  1820. these

  1821. things

  1822. are

  1823. storehouses

  1824. built

  1825. prescribed

  1826. to be

  1827. built

  1828. and

  1829. there

  1830. were

  1831. things

  1832. put

  1833. in

  1834. them

  1835. to

  1836. care

  1837. for

  1838. those

  1839. who

  1840. were

  1841. leading

  1842. people

  1843. in

  1844. the

  1845. worship

  1846. of

  1847. God

  1848. right

  1849. instead

  1850. of

  1851. that

  1852. Eliashib

  1853. clears

  1854. a

  1855. mountain

  1856. gives

  1857. it

  1858. as

  1859. a

  1860. house

  1861. to

  1862. Tobiah

  1863. verse

  1864. 6

  1865. while

  1866. this

  1867. was

  1868. taking

  1869. place

  1870. I

  1871. was

  1872. not

  1873. in

  1874. Jerusalem

  1875. for

  1876. in

  1877. the

  1878. 32nd

  1879. year

  1880. Artaxerxes

  1881. king

  1882. of

  1883. Babylon

  1884. I

  1885. went

  1886. to

  1887. the

  1888. king

  1889. and

  1890. after

  1891. some

  1892. time

  1893. I

  1894. asked

  1895. leave

  1896. of

  1897. the

  1898. king

  1899. and

  1900. came

  1901. to

  1902. Jerusalem

  1903. and

  1904. I

  1905. then

  1906. discovered

  1907. the

  1908. evil

  1909. that

  1910. Eliashib

  1911. had

  1912. done

  1913. for

  1914. Tobiah

  1915. preparing

  1916. for

  1917. him

  1918. a

  1919. chamber

  1920. in

  1921. the

  1922. courts

  1923. of

  1924. the

  1925. house

  1926. of

  1927. God

  1928. and

  1929. I

  1930. was

  1931. very

  1932. angry

  1933. and

  1934. I

  1935. threw

  1936. !

  1937. the

  1938. household

  1939. furniture

  1940. of

  1941. Tobiah

  1942. out

  1943. of

  1944. the

  1945. chamber

  1946. then

  1947. I

  1948. gave

  1949. orders

  1950. and

  1951. they

  1952. cleansed

  1953. the

  1954. chambers

  1955. and

  1956. I

  1957. brought

  1958. back

  1959. there

  1960. the

  1961. vessels

  1962. of

  1963. the

  1964. house

  1965. of

  1966. God

  1967. with

  1968. the

  1969. grain

  1970. offering

  1971. and

  1972. the

  1973. frankincense

  1974. so

  1975. he

  1976. comes

  1977. back

  1978. and

  1979. the

  1980. house

  1981. of

  1982. God

  1983. had

  1984. been

  1985. used

  1986. for

  1987. something

  1988. that

  1989. it

  1990. was

  1991. not

  1992. meant

  1993. to

  1994. be

  1995. used

  1996. for

  1997. this

  1998. was

  1999. not

  2000. the

  2001. purpose

  2002. that

  2003. this

  2004. place

  2005. had

  2006. been

  2007. built

  2008. for

  2009. provision

  2010. for

  2011. the

  2012. worship

  2013. of

  2014. God

  2015. so

  2016. he

  2017. goes

  2018. in

  2019. and

  2020. he

  2021. cleans

  2022. up

  2023. another

  2024. event

  2025. I

  2026. would

  2027. have

  2028. loved

  2029. to

  2030. be

  2031. held

  2032. he

  2033. throws

  2034. all

  2035. of

  2036. Tobias

  2037. furniture

  2038. out

  2039. onto

  2040. the

  2041. lawn

  2042. and

  2043. tells

  2044. him

  2045. to

  2046. get

  2047. Nehemiah

  2048. in

  2049. this

  2050. way

  2051. prefigures

  2052. Christ

  2053. imagine

  2054. that the

  2055. Old

  2056. Testament

  2057. followers

  2058. of

  2059. God

  2060. would

  2061. have

  2062. seen

  2063. this

  2064. and

  2065. understood

  2066. this

  2067. this

  2068. cleansing

  2069. using

  2070. the

  2071. temple

  2072. for

  2073. the

  2074. proper

  2075. use

  2076. was

  2077. not

  2078. meant

  2079. to

  2080. be

  2081. used

  2082. as

  2083. a

  2084. place

  2085. to

  2086. sell

  2087. things

  2088. was

  2089. meant

  2090. to

  2091. be

  2092. used

  2093. for

  2094. the

  2095. worship

  2096. of

  2097. God

  2098. so

  2099. we

  2100. would

  2101. wrongly

  2102. understand

  2103. it

  2104. that

  2105. way

  2106. primarily

  2107. that

  2108. this

  2109. is

  2110. about

  2111. having

  2112. zealous

  2113. anger

  2114. although

  2115. it

  2116. can

  2117. mean

  2118. that

  2119. the

  2120. example

  2121. of

  2122. our

  2123. Lord

  2124. has

  2125. its

  2126. place

  2127. and

  2128. its

  2129. time

  2130. in

  2131. our

  2132. day

  2133. we

  2134. can

  2135. also

  2136. wrongly

  2137. take

  2138. the

  2139. main

  2140. point

  2141. to

  2142. be

  2143. a

  2144. prophecy

  2145. of

  2146. the

  2147. coming

  2148. destruction

  2149. of

  2150. be

  2151. completed

  2152. and

  2153. when

  2154. it

  2155. is

  2156. it

  2157. will

  2158. be

  2159. destroyed

  2160. in

  2161. 70

  2162. AD

  2163. by

  2164. Titus

  2165. Vespasian

  2166. who was

  2167. a Roman

  2168. general

  2169. at the

  2170. time

  2171. later

  2172. became

  2173. a

  2174. ruler

  2175. you're

  2176. welcome

  2177. Clay

  2178. I hope

  2179. I

  2180. pronounced

  2181. that

  2182. properly

  2183. so

  2184. the

  2185. temple

  2186. was

  2187. to

  2188. be

  2189. destroyed

  2190. and

  2191. is

  2192. to

  2193. this

  2194. day

  2195. but

  2196. this

  2197. is

  2198. not

  2199. mainly

  2200. what

  2201. he's

  2202. saying

  2203. here

  2204. in

  2205. some

  2206. way

  2207. we

  2208. can

  2209. see

  2210. some

  2211. foreshadowing

  2212. because

  2213. we

  2214. know

  2215. what

  2216. came

  2217. to

  2218. pass

  2219. but

  2220. I

  2221. don't

  2222. believe

  2223. this

  2224. is

  2225. what

  2226. he

  2227. meant

  2228. to

  2229. teach

  2230. the

  2231. disciples

  2232. at

  2233. all

  2234. he

  2235. does

  2236. so

  2237. in

  2238. other

  2239. places

  2240. though

  2241. like

  2242. Mark

    Mark 13:1

  2243. chapter

  2244. 13

  2245. verse

  2246. 1

  2247. and

  2248. 2

  2249. he

  2250. says

  2251. and

  2252. as

  2253. he

  2254. came

  2255. out

  2256. of

  2257. the

  2258. temple

  2259. one

  2260. of

  2261. his

  2262. disciples

  2263. said

  2264. to

  2265. him

  2266. look

  2267. teacher

  2268. what

  2269. wonderful

  2270. stones

  2271. and

  2272. what

  2273. wonderful

  2274. buildings

  2275. and

  2276. Jesus

  2277. said

  2278. to

  2279. him

  2280. do

  2281. you

  2282. see

  2283. these

  2284. great

  2285. buildings

  2286. there

  2287. will

  2288. not

  2289. be

  2290. left

  2291. here

  2292. one

  2293. stone

  2294. upon

  2295. another

  2296. that

  2297. will

  2298. not

  2299. be

  2300. thrown

  2301. down

  2302. so

  2303. there

  2304. we

  2305. see

  2306. right

  2307. a

  2308. prediction

  2309. of

  2310. what

  2311. would

  2312. happen

  2313. but

  2314. I

  2315. don't

  2316. think

  2317. that's

  2318. primarily

  2319. what

  2320. he's

  2321. trying

  2322. to

  2323. accomplish

  2324. here

  2325. so

  2326. neither

  2327. of

  2328. these

  2329. is

  2330. the

  2331. main

  2332. point

  2333. so

  2334. what

  2335. is

  2336. what

  2337. is

  2338. the

  2339. main

  2340. point

  2341. again

  2342. it's

  2343. Jesus

  2344. coming

  2345. judgment

  2346. on

  2347. the

  2348. fruitless

  2349. this

  2350. is

  2351. how

  2352. Mark's

  2353. literary

  2354. prowess

  2355. if

  2356. you'll

  2357. allow

  2358. serves

  2359. us

  2360. as

  2361. we

  2362. look

  2363. at

  2364. the

  2365. story

  2366. of

  2367. the

  2368. fig

  2369. tree

  2370. and

  2371. the

  2372. story

  2373. of

  2374. Jesus

  2375. cleansing

  2376. the

  2377. temple

  2378. together

  2379. bookended

  2380. in

  2381. this

  2382. way

  2383. one

  2384. helps

  2385. us

  2386. understand

  2387. the

  2388. other

  2389. and

  2390. the

  2391. other

  2392. helps

  2393. us

  2394. understand

  2395. the

  2396. one

  2397. we're

  2398. supposed

  2399. to

  2400. see

  2401. these

  2402. things

  2403. in

  2404. conjunction

  2405. he's

  2406. coming

  2407. to

  2408. the

  2409. very

  2410. place

  2411. in

  2412. which

  2413. people

  2414. are

  2415. supposed

  2416. to

  2417. worship

  2418. God

  2419. rightly

  2420. and

  2421. they're

  2422. doing

  2423. it

  2424. wrongly

  2425. in

  2426. this

  2427. place

  2428. fruitless

  2429. in

  2430. this

  2431. way

  2432. and

  2433. so

  2434. he

  2435. is

  2436. expected

  2437. to

  2438. see

  2439. people

  2440. rightly

  2441. worshiping

  2442. God

  2443. by being

  2444. concerned

  2445. with

  2446. God's

  2447. concerns

  2448. and we

  2449. must ask

  2450. ourselves

  2451. again

  2452. at this

  2453. point

  2454. do you

  2455. love

  2456. the

  2457. things

  2458. that

  2459. God

  2460. loves

  2461. do you

  2462. love

  2463. the

  2464. things

  2465. that

  2466. God

  2467. loves

  2468. Jesus

  2469. quotes

  2470. in

  2471. his

  2472. condemnation

  2473. in

  2474. this

  2475. cleansing

  2476. process

  2477. from

  2478. Isaiah

  2479. 56

  2480. 7

  2481. and

  2482. Jeremiah

  2483. 7

  2484. 11

  2485. now

  2486. we've

  2487. talked

  2488. already

  2489. a bit

  2490. about

  2491. how

  2492. he

  2493. said

  2494. but

  2495. you

  2496. have

  2497. made

  2498. it

  2499. a

  2500. den

  2501. of

  2502. robbers

  2503. this

  2504. is

  2505. the

  2506. thing

  2507. this

  2508. is

  2509. the

  2510. bad

  2511. fruit

  2512. that

  2513. you

  2514. have

  2515. produced

  2516. or

  2517. the

  2518. fruitlessness

  2519. if you

  2520. prefer

  2521. that you

  2522. have

  2523. produced

  2524. Jeremiah

  2525. 7

  2526. 11

  2527. has

  2528. this

  2529. house

  2530. which

  2531. is

  2532. called

  2533. by

  2534. my

  2535. name

  2536. become

  2537. a

  2538. den

  2539. of

  2540. robbers

  2541. in

  2542. your

  2543. eyes

  2544. behold

  2545. I

  2546. myself

  2547. have

  2548. seen

  2549. it

  2550. declares

  2551. the

  2552. Lord

  2553. and

  2554. he

  2555. puts

  2556. us

  2557. along

  2558. with

  2559. Isaiah

  2560. !

  2561. 56

  2562. The

  2563. activity

  2564. that they

  2565. should have

  2566. been about

  2567. in the

  2568. court of

  2569. the

  2570. Gentiles

  2571. was

  2572. prayer

  2573. for the

  2574. nations

  2575. they

  2576. should

  2577. have

  2578. been

  2579. concerned

  2580. about

  2581. God's

  2582. glory

  2583. globally

  2584. they

  2585. should

  2586. have

  2587. been

  2588. concerned

  2589. that

  2590. everyone

  2591. everywhere

  2592. would see

  2593. God

  2594. rightly

  2595. and

  2596. worship

  2597. Him

  2598. from

  2599. the

  2600. heart

  2601. this

  2602. should

  2603. have

  2604. been

  2605. the

  2606. matter

  2607. that

  2608. was

  2609. moving

  2610. at

  2611. them

  2612. to

  2613. worship

  2614. Him

  2615. rightly

  2616. in

  2617. this

  2618. place

  2619. the

  2620. same

  2621. is

  2622. true

  2623. for

  2624. us

  2625. today

  2626. we're

  2627. concerned

  2628. about

  2629. the

  2630. things

  2631. that

  2632. God

  2633. is

  2634. concerned

  2635. about

  2636. that

  2637. we

  2638. love

  2639. the

  2640. things

  2641. He

  2642. loves

  2643. namely

  2644. His

  2645. own

  2646. glory

  2647. to

  2648. be

  2649. the

  2650. activity

  2651. of

  2652. those

  2653. who

  2654. fear

  2655. God

  2656. and

  2657. want

  2658. to

  2659. worship

  2660. Him

  2661. from

  2662. the

  2663. heart

  2664. turn

  2665. with me

  2666. to

  2667. Psalm

  2668. 96

  2669. let me

  2670. just

  2671. emphasize

  2672. this

  2673. point

  2674. to

  2675. you

  2676. let's

  2677. read

  2678. to

  2679. you

  2680. verses

  2681. 1

  2682. through

  2683. 9

  2684. Psalm

  2685. 96

  2686. oh

  2687. sing to

  2688. the

  2689. Lord

  2690. a new

  2691. song

  2692. sing

  2693. to

  2694. the

  2695. Lord

  2696. all

  2697. the

  2698. earth

  2699. sing

  2700. to

  2701. the

  2702. Lord

  2703. glory

  2704. and

  2705. strength

  2706. ascribe

  2707. to

  2708. the

  2709. Lord

  2710. the

  2711. glory

  2712. do

  2713. his

  2714. name

  2715. bring

  2716. an

  2717. offering

  2718. and

  2719. come

  2720. into

  2721. his

  2722. courts

  2723. worship

  2724. the

  2725. Lord

  2726. in

  2727. the

  2728. splendor

  2729. of

  2730. holiness

  2731. tremble

  2732. before

  2733. him

  2734. all

  2735. the

  2736. earth

  2737. this

  2738. is

  2739. what

  2740. we

  2741. are

  2742. meant

  2743. to

  2744. be

  2745. concerned

  2746. about

  2747. all

  2748. the

  2749. activity

  2750. of

  2751. our

  2752. lives

  2753. are

  2754. meant

  2755. to

  2756. press

  2757. at

  2758. people

  2759. our

  2760. lives

  2761. and

  2762. their

  2763. lives

  2764. to

  2765. sing

  2766. praises

  2767. !

  2768. glory

  2769. everywhere

  2770. that we

  2771. go

  2772. that

  2773. is

  2774. the

  2775. fruit

  2776. of

  2777. hearts

  2778. that

  2779. are

  2780. changed

  2781. hearts

  2782. that

  2783. are

  2784. devoted

  2785. in

  2786. worship

  2787. to

  2788. God

  2789. now

  2790. you'll

  2791. notice

  2792. in

  2793. verse

  2794. 18

  2795. and

  2796. 19

  2797. he's

  2798. once

  2799. again

  2800. caused

  2801. a bit

  2802. of

  2803. controversy

  2804. the

  2805. chief

  2806. priests

  2807. now

  2808. have

  2809. entered

  2810. the

  2811. scene

  2812. and

  2813. are

  2814. offended

  2815. and

  2816. the

  2817. scribes

  2818. as

  2819. well

  2820. the

  2821. intellectuals

  2822. the

  2823. religious

  2824. intellectuals

  2825. of the

  2826. day

  2827. and

  2828. they

  2829. begin

  2830. to

  2831. seek

  2832. to

  2833. kill

  2834. him

  2835. which

  2836. is

  2837. not

  2838. a

  2839. new

  2840. thing

  2841. at

  2842. all

  2843. right

  2844. because

  2845. they

  2846. feared

  2847. him

  2848. though

  2849. they

  2850. were

  2851. losing

  2852. control

  2853. of

  2854. the

  2855. crowds

  2856. they

  2857. could

  2858. no

  2859. longer

  2860. keep

  2861. their

  2862. thumb

  2863. down

  2864. on

  2865. them

  2866. because

  2867. Jesus

  2868. is

  2869. coming

  2870. and

  2871. he

  2872. is

  2873. destroying

  2874. their

  2875. power

  2876. right

  2877. their

  2878. apostolic

  2879. power

  2880. it

  2881. doesn't

  2882. it's

  2883. not a

  2884. reality

  2885. of a

  2886. thing

  2887. they've

  2888. created

  2889. this

  2890. new

  2891. religion

  2892. by

  2893. which

  2894. they

  2895. control

  2896. the

  2897. !

  2898. they're

  2899. going

  2900. to

  2901. see

  2902. Jesus

  2903. crucified

  2904. at

  2905. the

  2906. end

  2907. of

  2908. this

  2909. week

  2910. on

  2911. Friday

  2912. this

  2913. is

  2914. Tuesday

  2915. that

  2916. we're

  2917. in

  2918. the

  2919. Passion

  2920. Week

  2921. by

  2922. Friday

  2923. they're

  2924. going

  2925. to

  2926. see

  2927. him

  2928. put

  2929. to

  2930. death

  2931. and

  2932. praise

  2933. God

  2934. by

  2935. Sunday

  2936. he's

  2937. going

  2938. to

  2939. raise

  2940. again

  2941. we

  2942. have

  2943. life

  2944. in

  2945. him

  2946. as

  2947. a

  2948. result

  2949. his

  2950. sacrifice

  2951. on

  2952. our

  2953. behalf

  2954. did

  2955. a

  2956. little

  2957. just

  2958. quick

  2959. flip

  2960. through

  2961. the

  2962. end

  2963. of

  2964. Mark

  2965. just

  2966. to

  2967. see

  2968. !

  2969. how

  2970. much

  2971. longer

  2972. I

  2973. thought

  2974. we

  2975. would

  2976. be

  2977. in

  2978. Mark's

  2979. Gospel

  2980. account

  2981. I

  2982. think

  2983. it's

  2984. going

  2985. to

  2986. take

  2987. us

  2988. through

  2989. May

  2990. to

  2991. complete

  2992. it

  2993. so

  2994. we're

  2995. going

  2996. to

  2997. spend

  2998. months

  2999. gosh

  3000. I'm

  3001. horrible

  3002. at

  3003. math

  3004. in

  3005. this

  3006. way

  3007. on

  3008. the

  3009. calendar

  3010. eight

  3011. months

  3012. I

  3013. feel

  3014. like

  3015. that

  3016. is

  3017. it's

  3018. a

  3019. good

  3020. chunk

  3021. of

  3022. time

  3023. right

  3024. in

  3025. a

  3026. week

  3027. right

  3028. Jesus

  3029. is

  3030. going

  3031. to

  3032. say

  3033. so

  3034. much

  3035. in

  3036. this

  3037. last

  3038. week

  3039. to

  3040. the

  3041. apostles

  3042. and

  3043. to

  3044. us

  3045. it's

  3046. going

  3047. to

  3048. really

  3049. cause

  3050. us

  3051. to

  3052. face

  3053. the

  3054. realities

  3055. as

  3056. this

  3057. all

  3058. winds

  3059. down

  3060. to

  3061. an

  3062. end

  3063. and

  3064. cause

  3065. us

  3066. to

  3067. deal

  3068. with

  3069. all

  3070. the

  3071. implication

  3072. of

  3073. the

  3074. Son

  3075. of

  3076. God

  3077. sacrifice

  3078. on

  3079. our

  3080. behalf

  3081. we're

  3082. really

  3083. going

  3084. to

  3085. have

  3086. to

  3087. do

  3088. that

  3089. together

  3090. as

  3091. I

  3092. hope

  3093. we

  3094. do

  3095. every

  3096. Sunday

  3097. anyway

  3098. it's

  3099. really

  3100. going

  3101. to

  3102. press

  3103. us

  3104. into

  3105. that

  3106. how

  3107. should

  3108. we

  3109. live

  3110. properly

  3111. in

  3112. response

  3113. to

  3114. if

  3115. we

  3116. are

  3117. found

  3118. in

  3119. Christ

  3120. our

  3121. lives

  3122. are

  3123. going

  3124. to

  3125. look

  3126. different

  3127. they're

  3128. going

  3129. to

  3130. be

  3131. different

  3132. from

  3133. the

  3134. lives

  3135. of

  3136. this

  3137. world

  3138. God's

  3139. going

  3140. to

  3141. set

  3142. us

  3143. apart

  3144. he's

  3145. going

  3146. to

  3147. sanctify

  3148. us

  3149. in

  3150. his

  3151. truth

  3152. he's

  3153. going

  3154. to

  3155. lead

  3156. us

  3157. in

  3158. the

  3159. way

  3160. we

  3161. should

  3162. go

  3163. when

  3164. we're

  3165. going

  3166. to

  3167. have

  3168. to

  3169. wrestle

  3170. with

  3171. all

  3172. of

  3173. that

  3174. to

  3175. find

  3176. ourselves

  3177. to

  3178. examine

  3179. ourselves

  3180. !

  3181. find

  3182. that

  3183. we

  3184. are

  3185. we

  3186. are

  3187. reoriented

  3188. now

  3189. those

  3190. things

  3191. are

  3192. done

  3193. we

  3194. are

  3195. now

  3196. picking

  3197. up

  3198. new

  3199. passions

  3200. and

  3201. desires

  3202. and

  3203. those

  3204. are

  3205. the

  3206. passions

  3207. and

  3208. desires

  3209. of

  3210. our

  3211. Lord

  3212. let's

  3213. pray

  3214. together
