  1. I don't know if anybody else feels this way, or maybe from time to time.

  2. I'm having just a crazy morning.

  3. In a very kind of microcosmic way, we were getting ready.

  4. Sam and I were running late this morning trying to get the boys rallied.

  5. Sunday morning breaks their normal routine.

  6. They normally get up and they get to watch a cartoon while they eat their breakfast.

  7. Sunday mornings we throw them in clothes and throw them in the van and they eat on the run.

  8. And Judah really, really wanted, Sam had said he could get two animals,

  9. and he really wanted this one particular tree frog that he had.

  10. And so I was helping him and he really thought it was in his bucket and we couldn't find it.

  11. We had this whole selection process of the replacement tree frog for the one he really wanted.

  12. And just in this little five-minute absolute frustration for me,

  13. I realized that's how my whole morning has been going.

  14. And after that, got a call that the water wasn't functioning too well in the building this morning,

  15. which I'm sure many of you have already experienced.

  16. We're on a well.

  17. The filter was really dirty, so we thought maybe that was it.

  18. Threw a new filter in.

  19. That's not it.

  20. It seems that just generally in the county, the water table is really low.

  21. And so praise God for the potential rain that's coming to bring the water table back up.

  22. The pumps are shut off, so there is no water in the building if you're wondering at this moment what's happening with that.

  23. But the time I would have normally spent just re-going over my notes,

  24. I spent running up and down the stairs and playing with the pump

  25. and trying to figure out what in the world was going on with that.

  26. And I'm in this really bad habit.

  27. I wouldn't suggest any of you who are intending to preach to make notes like I do notes,

  28. because I essentially preach to myself all week.

  29. I'm just constantly looking at the scriptures,

  30. and literally in my head I preach to myself.

  31. I don't picture you guys.

  32. I picture me, and I tell me what I need to hear from this particular text.

  33. And then when I go, oh, that was good, I write it down.

  34. But usually in this very abbreviated form that will just help jog my memory to say it the way I said it in my head.

  35. And so it's really important that I go back and review my notes so I know what in the world I'm talking about.

  36. In fact, I do this to the degree that I've gone back thinking, for example,

  37. college Bible study right now is going through 1 Peter, which a bunch of years ago we preached through 1 Peter.

  38. Oh, like three years ago.

  39. And I got assigned a text that I'd previously done.

  40. I remember doing it.

  41. So I went and found my notes, and they made no sense to me.

  42. There were some references that made sense.

  43. I mean, obviously I had some framework going on there, but why did I write that down?

  44. And what did I intend to say as a result?

  45. So that's kind of where I find myself this morning as I'm coming to my notes.

  46. I looked at them briefly and went, I don't even know what that means.

  47. So let's pray together.

  48. For God's grace, for the preaching of his word this morning.

  49. We always need it.

  50. We need it more.

  51. We feel our need for it more at some time.

  52. So let's pray together.

  53. Father, it is a blessing to get to come to your word.

  54. For us to all hold copies of various sort, translation, some digital, some in paper,

  55. some big and some small in our laps this morning.

  56. And to have a church that celebrates the truth and desires to come around it

  57. and to align our lives with it is a great grace wrought by you.

  58. Father, as we all come from different directions this morning with different levels of craziness in our day,

  59. I would ask that you be very gracious to us.

  60. Still our hearts focus our minds that we might hear what you would say to us by your word this morning.

  61. There is no authority in my speaking except for the authority of your written word.

  62. Help us to cherish it.

  63. Help us to want to hear from you this morning.

  64. To desire to have our little worlds crushed by your astounding love to us.

  65. And Father, help all of this, the great end of it all,

  66. be that we love you more as a result of what we do here together today,

  67. that we will proclaim your excellencies,

  68. that we will leave this place shouting to the mountaintops how great our God is.

  69. We pray all of this in Jesus' precious and holy name.

  70. Amen.

  71. So we are now in Mark chapter 12.

    Mark 12 chapter mention

  72. It is Wednesday of what's been called Passion Week.

  73. Jesus will be crucified on Friday.

  74. And we're going to spend a good majority of the rest of our time in Mark in Wednesday.

  75. Quite a bit of the text itself is on Wednesday.

  76. Things are winding down in one sense and certainly winding up in another sense.

  77. He's entered Jerusalem on Monday, which we see at the beginning of chapter 11.

  78. He cleanses the temple on Tuesday.

  79. Begins to make quite a hubbub in town already.

  80. And then Kyle last week preached from the very end of chapter 11.

  81. And we see the confrontation that begins in Jerusalem with the scribes and the Pharisees,

  82. all these religious elite leaders that eventually leads to his crucifixion on Friday.

  83. And so that's where we find ourselves as we come to the beginning of chapter 12.

  84. So follow along as I read to you, starting in verse 1.

  85. And he began to speak to them in parables.

  86. A man planted a vineyard and put a fence around it and dug a pit for the winepress and built a tower

  87. and leased it to tenants and went into another country.

  88. When the season came, he sent a servant to the tenants to get from them some of the fruit of the vineyard.

  89. And they took him and beat him and sent him away empty-handed.

  90. Again, he sent to them another servant and they struck him on the head and treated him shapefully.

  91. And he sent another and him they killed.

  92. And so with many others, some they beat and some they killed.

  93. He had still one other, a beloved son.

  94. Finally, he sent him to them saying,

  95. They will respect my son.

  96. But those tenants said to one another,

  97. This is the heir. Come, let us kill him and the inheritance will be ours.

  98. And they took him and killed him and threw him out of the vineyard.

  99. What will the owner of the vineyard do?

  100. He will come and destroy the tenants and give the vineyard to others.

  101. Have you not read this scripture?

  102. The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.

  103. This was the Lord's doing and it is marvelous in our eyes.

  104. And they were seeking to arrest him but feared the people for they perceived that he had told the parable against them.

  105. So they left him and went away.

  106. This is God's word to us.

  107. It was written for his glory and our good.

  108. We would all do well to listen to it in order to believe its promises and obey its commands.

  109. Jesus begins, verse 1, we see, to speak to them in parables.

  110. And I think it's important for us to note who it is that he's talking to.

  111. Chapter 11, verse 27.

  112. It's the chief priests and the scribes and the elders.

  113. Essentially, all of those at the top.

  114. The upper echelon of apostate Judaism is who he's speaking this parable to.

  115. And Jesus is such a masterful storyteller.

  116. I would encourage you at some point to take a brief break from whatever study you're doing in the scriptures

  117. and spend some time just studying the parables of Jesus.

  118. Brilliant in every regard.

  119. Direct to the point.

  120. Speaks to these people in terms that they understood.

  121. Drew their minds to the exact place that he intended for them to go.

  122. For us, it takes a little more work sometimes.

  123. We have to understand context a bit more.

  124. But boy, were these stories pointed and perfect in every regard.

  125. Now, we've seen parables serve some different purposes.

  126. Back in Mark chapter 4, he's speaking in parables to the crowd at Barad.

    Mark 4 chapter mention

  127. And in verse 10, it says that when he was alone,

  128. those around him with the twelve asked him about the parables.

  129. And he said to them,

  130. to you has been given the secret of the kingdom of God.

  131. But for those outside, everything is in parables so that they may indeed see,

  132. but not perceive and may indeed hear, but not understand,

  133. lest they should turn and be forgiven.

  134. So Jesus has used the parables to veil the truth in a sense,

  135. to speak about the kingdom of God in such a way that only those whose hearts had been enlightened by the spirit

  136. understood what he was saying to them.

  137. It was kind of a shrouding of the truth.

  138. But now, he's using a parable in a much more pointed fashion.

  139. These darkened, hard-hearted religious leaders fully understand that he is speaking about them.

  140. We see this to be the case in verse 12.

  141. For they perceived, brilliant fellas, glad you figured it out,

  142. that he was talking against them.

  143. These religious leaders, these apostates,

  144. these who were leading the people of Israel astray.

  145. And the story starts out with a man.

  146. This man here is God who plants a vineyard,

  147. puts a fence around it, digs a pit for the wine press, builds a tower.

  148. And for us, these might seem like unimportant details,

  149. but all of these things were necessary for the flourishing of a vineyard.

  150. In fact, in this area, the valleys are very, very fertile, soft, good ground.

  151. The mountains are full of stones.

  152. It took a lot of work to prepare the hillsides,

  153. and this is where they grew.

  154. Wheat in the valley, wine, grapes up on the hillside.

  155. They would have put a tower in the middle of it,

  156. so they could have guarded over it,

  157. from animals that would come and eat the grapes,

  158. as well as any marauders that would come and try to take over the vineyards.

  159. They would build a pit and a wine press,

  160. so that they could process the grapes into something that was useful for their consumption.

  161. These things were all necessary,

  162. and so already he's catching them up into this story.

  163. A man who builds a good vineyard.

  164. A right and a proper vineyard.

  165. But what does the vineyard represent in the story?

  166. What or who is the vineyard?

  167. The vineyard is Israel.

  168. He's making here a direct reference to Isaiah 5,

    Isaiah 5:1

  169. verse 1 and 2.

  170. You're welcome to turn there, or just listen.

  171. Let me sing for my beloved my love song concerning his vineyard.

  172. My beloved had a vineyard on a very fertile hill.

  173. He dug it and cleared it of stones and planted it with choice vines.

  174. He built a watchtower in the midst of it and hewed out a wine vat in it,

  175. and he looked for it to yield grapes,

  176. but it yielded wild grapes.

  177. There are many other Old Testament references as well to this as a symbol,

  178. like Psalm 80, verses 8 and 9.

    Psalms 80:8

  179. This is a psalm of Asaph.

  180. You brought a vine out of Egypt.

  181. You drove out the nations and planted it.

  182. You cleared the ground for it.

  183. It took deep root and filled the land.

  184. This symbol is used most often to speak positively about the Lord's planting of His vineyard,

  185. His keeping of it, His tending of it,

  186. the way in which He sustains it.

  187. But it's also used to speak in negative about Israel,

  188. this vineyard that He had planted,

  189. and the way in which it lacked the proper fruit.

  190. We saw that Isaiah 5 at the end of verse 2.

  191. Looked for it to yield grapes, but it yielded wild grapes,

  192. which was not a grape that was good for wine making.

  193. Again, later on in Isaiah 5, verse 7,

    Isaiah 5:7

  194. For the vineyard of the Lord of hosts is the house of Israel,

  195. and the men of Judah are His pleasant planting.

  196. And He looked for, here's the fruit He's looking for,

  197. the good grapes,

  198. He looked for justice,

  199. but behold, bloodshed.

  200. For righteousness,

  201. but behold, an outcry.

  202. Again, Jeremiah 2, verse 21,

    Jeremiah 2:21

  203. Yet I planted you a choice vine,

  204. holy of pure seed.

  205. How then have you turned degenerate

  206. and become a wild vine?

  207. They did not produce the fruit

  208. that was keeping with righteousness.

  209. They didn't produce the fruit that was proper

  210. for the people of God.

  211. Now, much of this was because

  212. the tenants,

  213. those that were put in charge

  214. over this vineyard,

  215. speaking here of those with spiritual leadership,

  216. did not lead well.

  217. Now, Israel is certainly held accountable as a nation.

  218. Individuals will be held accountable

  219. as individuals in our church.

  220. You will be held accountable

  221. for the sins that you commit,

  222. both those of omission and commission,

  223. but I will be held accountable

  224. to a higher degree

  225. for the way in which I teach you

  226. to obey the Word of God.

  227. What a weight that is,

  228. especially on a morning like this.

  229. So here we see in this parable

  230. a particular indictment

  231. against the religious leaders.

  232. Jesus is not dismissing Israel

  233. for their lack of following Him,

  234. but particularly as these men

  235. come to confront Him,

  236. which is not a new thing for Jesus,

  237. He's already experienced this

  238. as He's traveled all over Galilee.

  239. They've been sending men out to Him.

  240. They've already been trying to trap Him.

  241. He's been avoiding them all along.

  242. But here we see in this final week

  243. as things are coming to a head,

  244. the great climax of this redemptive story

  245. is about to happen.

  246. The confrontations also increase.

  247. And so specifically,

  248. He's speaking against these men.

  249. Again, chapter 11, verse 27,

  250. the chief priests, the scribes,

  251. and the elders who came to Him.

  252. Listen to what He says in Matthew 23.

  253. You'd do well to turn here.

  254. Matthew 23.

  255. There's a well-known chapter

  256. where Jesus speaks out

  257. against the Pharisees,

  258. the woes.

  259. He says,

  260. woe to them,

  261. woe to them,

  262. woe to them.

  263. Beginning in verse 1 of Matthew 23,

  264. then Jesus said to the crowds

  265. and to His disciples,

  266. the scribes and the Pharisees

  267. sit on Moses' seat,

  268. meaning they were given authority,

  269. they were religious leaders,

  270. over the people.

  271. So, do and observe

  272. whatever they tell you,

  273. but not the works they do,

  274. for they preach,

  275. but do not practice.

  276. They were great hypocrites.

  277. The great picture of hypocrisy.

  278. And sadly, I think we too often reflect

  279. the way in which they live.

  280. Verse 4,

  281. they tie up heavy burdens,

  282. hard to bear,

  283. and lay them on people's shoulders,

  284. but they themselves

  285. are not willing to move them

  286. with a finger.

  287. They do all their deeds

  288. to be seen by others,

  289. for they make their phylacteries broad

  290. and their fringes long,

  291. and they love the place of honor

  292. at feasts,

  293. and the best seats

  294. in the synagogues,

  295. and greetings in the marketplaces,

  296. and being called rabbi

  297. by others.

  298. These men had taken these positions

  299. and used it for their own

  300. self-exaltation.

  301. The phylactery was a small leather box

  302. that carried the law of God

  303. on their foreheads,

  304. and their fringes were on their

  305. prayer shawls,

  306. and them having longer fringes

  307. was supposed to be a greater thing.

  308. They were more serious

  309. about their devotion

  310. to the way in which God

  311. had called them to live.

  312. It seemed that they were

  313. getting into a competition

  314. about who could be better

  315. and greater

  316. and be exalted by people.

  317. Is this not the way

  318. that so many of us live?

  319. Do you identify in any way

  320. with these rulers?

  321. Piling up for yourself

  322. praise and exaltation.

  323. Don't forget where we've been

  324. in Mark.

  325. Put yourself back in Mark 8.

  326. The ways in which

  327. that Jesus has now set Himself aside.

  328. He's teaching the disciples.

  329. He's traveling towards Jerusalem.

  330. He's got this final few months

  331. with them moving along.

  332. And He says some incredible,

  333. shocking things about what it looks like

  334. to follow Him.

  335. The high cost of discipleship.

  336. Chapter 8, verse 34.

  337. If anyone would come after Me,

  338. let him deny himself

  339. and take up his cross

  340. and follow Me.

  341. You must die.

  342. You must lay down who you are

  343. if you want to be found in Christ

  344. and be found to be called His.

  345. Chapter 9, verse 35.

  346. If anyone would be first,

  347. he must be last of all

  348. and servant of all.

  349. Chapter 10, verse 31.

  350. But many who are first

  351. will be last

  352. and the last first.

  353. Chapter 10 again, verse 43.

  354. But whoever will be great among you

  355. must be your servant.

  356. And who will be first among you

  357. must be slave of all.

  358. And He puts the great punctuation mark

  359. on all of this

  360. as Himself as the example.

  361. He has yet to do this,

  362. but we're here coming to it

  363. in this week we're studying.

  364. Verse 45.

  365. For even the Son of Man

  366. came not to be served,

  367. but to serve

  368. and to give His life

  369. as a ransom for many.

  370. This is what it looks like

  371. to follow Jesus.

  372. This is what it looks like

  373. to not be apostate

  374. and to follow God.

  375. This is not at all

  376. what these religious rulers

  377. were doing.

  378. They were the antithesis of this.

  379. The very opposite

  380. of this thing.

  381. And we see that even

  382. they are aware of it.

  383. By the end of His story

  384. in verse 12,

  385. they have perceived

  386. that He's talking about them.

  387. The indictment is on them.

  388. And yet they fail to repent.

  389. They instead seek to kill Him

  390. at the appropriate time

  391. when they feel that

  392. they can get away

  393. with such an act.

  394. And back in our story,

  395. verse 2.

  396. When the season came,

  397. He sent a servant

  398. to the tenants

  399. to get from them

  400. some of the fruit

  401. of the vineyard.

  402. Now this whole practice

  403. of leasing out a property,

  404. even setting it up

  405. and then giving it

  406. to people to work

  407. was very common

  408. in this day.

  409. It's not entirely uncommon

  410. in our day either.

  411. But the way that they

  412. would go about this exchange

  413. is that the owner

  414. of the land

  415. would get some percentage

  416. of the crop

  417. that was yielded.

  418. So that's all He's saying here

  419. is driving this story along.

  420. He's bringing the people

  421. who are listening,

  422. particularly these religious leaders,

  423. along in this story.

  424. So they see

  425. there's a good vineyard built,

  426. there's tenants put over it,

  427. and when the fruit comes,

  428. the proper thing

  429. is to follow.

  430. The man who's gone away

  431. has sent somebody

  432. to collect

  433. what is rightfully his.

  434. What would have been expected.

  435. Verse 3,

  436. And they took him,

  437. and they beat him,

  438. and sent him away empty-handed.

  439. So the servant is beaten

  440. and sent back.

  441. Verse 4,

  442. Again he sent to them

  443. another servant,

  444. and they struck him on the head

  445. and treated him shamefully.

  446. And he sent another,

  447. and him they killed,

  448. and so with many others.

  449. Some they beat,

  450. and some they killed.

  451. Now note for a moment

  452. this man with this vineyard

  453. and his great,

  454. great patience

  455. and mercy

  456. towards the tenants.

  457. In fact,

  458. at this point,

  459. the people listening

  460. would have already been

  461. kind of enraged

  462. by the activity

  463. of this man.

  464. Why did he not go

  465. and destroy these tenants

  466. after they beat

  467. and sent away a servant

  468. the first time?

  469. The proper and right thing

  470. for them to have done

  471. on the first sending

  472. of the servant

  473. would have been to

  474. yield the crop,

  475. give to him

  476. what was rightfully his,

  477. and send it back,

  478. and they refused to do it.

  479. This was grounds

  480. for their very dismissal.

  481. In fact,

  482. he would have had

  483. much room to punish,

  484. right?

  485. To destroy them

  486. and to drive them out.

  487. Well, we see this man

  488. standing as a symbol

  489. for our Lord

  490. and the way in which

  491. he dealt with Israel

  492. with great patience,

  493. sending to them

  494. another,

  495. and another,

  496. and another.

  497. Listen to the words

  498. of the Lord.

  499. Return to me.

  500. You are my people.

  501. I will be your God.

  502. These words echo

  503. all throughout

  504. the Old Testament.

  505. The way in which

  506. he beckons his people

  507. to come back to him.

  508. And so,

  509. who are these servants

  510. in our parable?

  511. Who do they represent?

  512. They're the prophets.

  513. They're the prophets.

  514. And what had the leaders

  515. of Israel done

  516. with the prophets?

  517. All of you are scholars

  518. of your Old Testament.

  519. I know you know it

  520. so well.

  521. From Moses

  522. all the way

  523. to John,

  524. the baptizer,

  525. they largely rejected them.

  526. Largely rejected them.

  527. Some repentance.

  528. Some turning back.

  529. But for the most part,

  530. they rejected them.

  531. Some examples for you.

  532. Tradition holds

  533. that Isaiah was

  534. sawn in half

  535. and Jeremiah

  536. was stoned to death.

  537. Ezekiel hated.

  538. Amos had to flee

  539. for his life.

  540. Zechariah was rejected

  541. and stoned.

  542. Micah was beaten.

  543. And here in our

  544. Mark's Gospel account,

  545. John the baptizer

  546. was beheaded.

  547. They rejected

  548. the messengers of God.

  549. They didn't want to hear

  550. what they had to say.

  551. Jesus sums this up

  552. again back in Matthew 23.

  553. I should have had you

  554. keep your finger there.

  555. Beginning in verse 29.

  556. Woe to you,

  557. scribes and Pharisees,

  558. hypocrites,

  559. for you build

  560. the tombs of the prophets

  561. and decorate

  562. the monuments

  563. of the righteous,

  564. saying,

  565. if we had lived

  566. in the days of our fathers,

  567. we would not have

  568. taken part with them

  569. in the shedding

  570. and shedding the blood

  571. of the prophets.

  572. They were so self-righteous

  573. they thought themselves

  574. above their forefathers

  575. who had done these things.

  576. Right?

  577. Who had destroyed

  578. these prophets.

  579. So they're building

  580. for them monuments.

  581. They're decorating

  582. these monuments

  583. and they're saying

  584. we would have

  585. nothing to do

  586. with the murder

  587. of the prophets.

  588. Verse 31.

  589. The indictment

  590. Jesus delivers to them.

  591. Thus you witness

  592. against yourselves

  593. that you are sons

  594. of those who

  595. murdered the prophets.

  596. Fill up then

  597. the measure

  598. of your fathers

  599. you serpents

  600. you brood of vipers.

  601. How are you to escape

  602. being sentenced

  603. to hell?

  604. That's our Lord.

  605. Therefore I send you

  606. prophets

  607. and wise men

  608. and scribes

  609. some of whom

  610. you will kill

  611. and crucify

  612. and some you will

  613. flog in your synagogues

  614. and persecute

  615. from town to town

  616. so that on you

  617. may come

  618. all the righteous blood

  619. shed on earth

  620. from the blood

  621. of righteous Abel

  622. to the blood

  623. of Zachariah

  624. the son of Barakai

  625. whom you murdered

  626. between the sanctuary

  627. and the altar.

  628. Truly I say to you

  629. all these things

  630. will come

  631. upon this generation.

  632. So what is he saying

  633. to them?

  634. He's saying

  635. I'm going to prove

  636. that you are as evil

  637. as your forefathers.

  638. You're going to kill me

  639. and then I'm going to send

  640. to you many people

  641. who are going to come

  642. and profess the truth

  643. of God

  644. and you're going to

  645. kill them too.

  646. And we see this

  647. all play out

  648. in this prediction

  649. that happens here.

  650. that's who these men are.

  651. And boy

  652. the scathing way

  653. in which Jesus

  654. speaks to them.

  655. He gives them

  656. no space

  657. to wiggle out

  658. of this whatsoever.

  659. Serpents

  660. brood of vipers

  661. evil men

  662. with evil intentions

  663. proclaiming to be

  664. men of God

  665. and yet

  666. were not

  667. in any way whatsoever.

  668. Now Jesus uses

  669. two titles of himself

  670. in the coming verses

  671. and we really need

  672. to hone in on this

  673. and really pay attention

  674. to this.

  675. So we see the different

  676. slaves are sent.

  677. Kind of this

  678. amassing number of slaves.

  679. It would appear

  680. that this man

  681. runs out of slaves.

  682. He sends so many

  683. different servants

  684. to them

  685. that he's out.

  686. He's tapped out.

  687. No more servants

  688. to send

  689. because verse 6 says

  690. he still had one other.

  691. A beloved son.

  692. Who is this?

  693. It is the Christ.

  694. It is Jesus.

  695. The beloved son.

  696. The man says

  697. they will respect

  698. my son

  699. but the tenants

  700. said to one another

  701. this is the heir.

  702. This is the Christ.

  703. Come let us kill him

  704. and the inheritance

  705. will be ours.

  706. And they took him

  707. and killed him

  708. and threw him

  709. out of the vineyard.

  710. Jesus is coming

  711. and he is disrupting

  712. their little world

  713. of their religious

  714. eliteness.

  715. They are getting

  716. knocked down

  717. off of their thrones

  718. that they have set up.

  719. For the second time now

  720. Jesus has come

  721. and he has taken over

  722. the temple.

  723. It happens previously

  724. at the very beginning

  725. of his ministry.

  726. We see that in John 2.

  727. This is the second time

  728. he's come back now

  729. and he's done it again.

  730. This courtyard

  731. of the Gentiles

  732. was a huge space

  733. and I would just

  734. love, oh would I love

  735. to see it.

  736. I hope that when we

  737. get to heaven

  738. we somehow get

  739. the revelation

  740. of what that looked like

  741. and we watch the DVD

  742. or something

  743. of him driving out

  744. and controlling

  745. this massive,

  746. massive space.

  747. He's totally disrupted

  748. and that's why

  749. they're coming to him

  750. and that's why

  751. as Kyle was talking about

  752. they're saying

  753. by what authority?

  754. You can't just come in

  755. and take over like this?

  756. He's putting them

  757. in their place.

  758. He's disrupting

  759. all of this.

  760. And they don't want that.

  761. They want the temporary good.

  762. They want the temporary glory.

  763. They want him out of the picture

  764. so they can continue

  765. to persist

  766. in leading in the way

  767. that they have.

  768. Amassing for themselves.

  769. Getting all of the praise

  770. in that time.

  771. Jesus is the beloved Son.

  772. Remember back in Mark 1

  773. when Jesus was baptized

  774. by John the baptizer.

  775. We see this beautiful picture

  776. of the Trinity

  777. all in one place.

  778. Jesus being baptized.

  779. The Spirit of God

  780. descending like a dove

  781. and a voice coming from heaven

  782. that says,

  783. You are my beloved Son.

  784. With you,

  785. I am well pleased.

  786. Places this seal

  787. and this mark on him

  788. and his ministry

  789. really kicks off

  790. at this point.

  791. The amazing thing,

  792. beloved,

  793. and the reason I call you that,

  794. is that if you're in Christ,

  795. we are also now

  796. children of God.

  797. Jesus is the Son of God.

  798. This complex,

  799. mind-blowing,

  800. Trinitarian truth

  801. and the ministry apprenticeship

  802. that we have going on here

  803. this afternoon.

  804. We're going to talk about

  805. the Trinity.

  806. It is such a difficult thing.

  807. It's clearly biblically taught.

  808. So hard to understand.

  809. We've got this equal,

  810. coexisting,

  811. three-part God

  812. and yet it exists

  813. in some hierarchy.

  814. The Son yielding to the will

  815. of the Father.

  816. The Father loving the Son.

  817. It's a complex deal.

  818. But this passes to us.

  819. We get to join in.

  820. Not that we're part of God,

  821. but we get to be part of this

  822. wonderful family

  823. and this communion

  824. that exists in that way.

  825. John writes in 1 John,

  826. 1-3,

  827. See what kind of love

  828. the Father has given to us

  829. that we should be called

  830. children of God?

  831. And so we are.

  832. The reason why the world

  833. does not know us

  834. is that it did not know Him.

  835. Beloved,

  836. we are God's children now

  837. and what we will be

  838. has not yet appeared,

  839. but we know that

  840. when He appears

  841. we should be like Him

  842. because we shall see Him

  843. as He is.

  844. And everyone who thus hopes

  845. in Him purifies himself

  846. as He is pure.

  847. If you have placed your hope,

  848. if you have placed believing faith

  849. in Jesus Christ,

  850. you are a child of God.

  851. And you see that the

  852. clear expectation

  853. as we've been studying

  854. through Mark

  855. is that we're also

  856. going to experience

  857. the kind of suffering

  858. that Christ experiences.

  859. We've seen this now

  860. a number of times

  861. throughout the text.

  862. Prosperity gospel,

  863. be damned.

  864. It's not the truth.

  865. We will suffer

  866. and we will die

  867. for our faith.

  868. We live in a comfortable place

  869. where this isn't a reality to us.

  870. And the shameful thing

  871. is because most of us

  872. aren't living for Christ.

  873. Most of us have bought into

  874. this cheap grace idea.

  875. Right?

  876. You check a box.

  877. Christian.

  878. You show up for an hour and a half.

  879. Maybe some bonus things.

  880. You plug in somewhere

  881. and do your monthly service.

  882. And you think you're good

  883. and right with God.

  884. Discipleship is costly.

  885. It costs you everything.

  886. But it's worth it.

  887. Trade what you can't keep

  888. to that eternal thing

  889. that you cannot lose.

  890. Right?

  891. This is the high call

  892. of the gospel.

  893. To be children of God.

  894. John very poignantly says

  895. the reason the world

  896. does not know us

  897. is that it did not know

  898. Him.

  899. We will be rejected

  900. by the world

  901. but we will be accepted

  902. by God.

  903. Isn't this a better thing?

  904. Here we see these scribes,

  905. these Pharisees,

  906. these elders,

  907. the religious leaders

  908. who were highly accepted

  909. by the world.

  910. Jesus said in Matthew 23,

  911. how will you escape hell?

  912. How?

  913. This is what you're looking for

  914. in life.

  915. Your end is destruction.

  916. What a tragic thing.

  917. Place your faith in Christ.

  918. Accept what comes with that.

  919. The high cost of discipleship

  920. and be called a child of God.

  921. It says in the text

  922. that they killed Him

  923. and then they threw Him out.

  924. This is likely a reference

  925. to the wide rejection

  926. of Jesus by Israel.

  927. They threw Him

  928. out of the vineyard

  929. altogether.

  930. The vineyard itself

  931. did not contain Him

  932. any longer

  933. but they tossed Him

  934. outside of its walls

  935. and so Jesus

  936. opens the indictment up

  937. a bit more.

  938. And then He asks

  939. the question

  940. in verse 9,

  941. what will the owner

  942. of the vineyard do?

  943. Now in the parallel text

  944. in Matthew 21,

    Matthew 21:41

  945. verse 41,

  946. they respond,

  947. they said to Him,

  948. He will put those wretches

  949. to a miserable death

  950. and let out the vineyard

  951. to other tenants

  952. who will give Him

  953. the fruits

  954. in their season.

  955. Now remember

  956. who He's talking to.

  957. He's talking to these

  958. religious scribes.

  959. These people

  960. who should have

  961. had all the answers.

  962. And they did in this case.

  963. In Matthew's account,

  964. they respond

  965. with the right thing.

  966. Jesus has so caught them up

  967. into this story

  968. that they've yet to really realize

  969. that they're now

  970. delivering judgment

  971. on themselves.

  972. What's He going to do

  973. to these men

  974. who have treated Him

  975. so shamefully,

  976. who in every way

  977. have made themselves

  978. His enemy?

  979. They say,

  980. who put Him

  981. to a miserable death?

  982. That's the right

  983. and proper thing to do.

  984. They understood

  985. capital punishment.

  986. Genesis 9, 6.

  987. God speaks to Noah

  988. and says,

  989. whoever sheds

  990. the blood of man,

  991. by man shall his blood

  992. be shed.

  993. For God made man

  994. in His own image.

  995. They would have been

  996. furious

  997. as much as they were

  998. engaging in this story,

  999. this fiction

  1000. that's happening

  1001. before them,

1002. at the way in which

  1003. these tenants

  1004. treated the man

  1005. who owned

  1006. this vineyard.

  1007. Put them to death.

  1008. Come.

  1009. Put them to death.

  1010. Drive them out.

  1011. Give the vineyard

  1012. to other tenants

  1013. who give Him

  1014. the fruits

  1015. in their season.

  1016. And then Jesus

  1017. brings another title

  1018. into our scene

  1019. in verse 10.

  1020. Jesus is

  1021. the cornerstone.

  1022. He's the cornerstone.

  1023. Have you not read

  1024. this Scripture?

  1025. Now, when Jesus

  1026. uses words like this,

  1027. He's really mocking

  1028. these men

  1029. because they had

  1030. read it.

1031. They clearly had read it.

  1032. These were the experts

  1033. on the law.

  1034. I can't hold myself

  1035. in comparison

  1036. to the way

  1037. they understood

  1038. the Scriptures.

  1039. I'm not like this

  1040. in my knowledge.

  1041. We know men

1042. who are in our country

  1043. we look to,

  1044. we use their commentaries

1045. and go and source them

  1046. for help in understanding

  1047. the Scriptures.

  1048. So they knew this.

1049. They had read the Scripture.

  1050. The stone

  1051. that the builders rejected

  1052. has become the cornerstone.

1053. This was the Lord's doing

  1054. and it is marvelous

  1055. in our eyes.

1056. Now, if you don't know much

  1057. about this ancient architecture,

  1058. the cornerstone

  1059. was incredibly important

  1060. for the building

  1061. of a building

1062. because it had to be hewn,

  1063. right?

  1064. They chipped away.

  1065. They built these things,

  1066. blocks of rock.

  1067. They built stones

  1068. to be stacked.

  1069. Incredible.

  1070. I hope someday

  1071. to get to travel

  1072. and see firsthand

1073. some of this ancient architecture.

  1074. That cornerstone

  1075. was so important

1076. because it had to be

  1077. laid out perfectly square

  1078. on all sides

  1079. because it built

  1080. the walls out

  1081. as well as

  1082. the way in which

1083. the wall would be built up.

  1084. Right?

1085. So if it was crooked

  1086. in any way whatsoever,

  1087. the wall would lean

1088. or the walls would gap out

1089. or they would narrow in.

  1090. The building wouldn't

  1091. be put together properly.

  1092. The cornerstone

  1093. was key

  1094. to the function

  1095. of the entire building.

  1096. Without it,

  1097. the building

  1098. could not hold together.

  1099. It could not be

  1100. properly built.

  1101. This is further significant

  1102. because

  1103. he's quoting here

  1104. Psalm 118,

  1105. 22,

  1106. and 23.

1107. Now I know all of you

  1108. have great memories.

  1109. So you're remembering

1110. a number of weeks ago

  1111. when Clay

  1112. spoke

  1113. at the beginning

  1114. of chapter 11

  1115. about the triumphal

  1116. entry.

  1117. And they called out

  1118. all the people

  1119. called out

  1120. Hosanna!

1121. Blessed is he who comes!

1122. in the name of the Lord.

  1123. And guess what

  1124. they're quoting there?

  1125. Psalm 118,

    Psalms 118:26

  1126. verse 26.

  1127. Just a few verses

  1128. after this very thing

  1129. that Jesus is quoting.

1130. The stone that the builders

  1131. project

  1132. has become the cornerstone.

1133. This was the Lord's doing

  1134. and it is marvelous

  1135. in our eyes.

  1136. So by the profession

  1137. of the people

  1138. as he came in

  1139. on Monday,

  1140. he is that cornerstone.

1141. And this may be the point

  1142. we don't know exactly,

1143. but this may be the point

  1144. at which

  1145. in their minds

  1146. it turns

  1147. and they get,

  1148. oh, aha,

  1149. he's talking about us.

  1150. Oh, he's saying

  1151. he's the cornerstone.

  1152. And it mentions there

  1153. in verse 12

  1154. that they feared

  1155. the people.

  1156. So they left him

  1157. and they went away.

1158. Very clever of our Lord

1159. to quote from Psalm 118,

  1160. 22 and 23

  1161. in this case.

  1162. Now you remember

  1163. verse 9,

  1164. pulling us back up,

1165. you remember in verse 9

  1166. that the tenants

1167. are going to be destroyed

  1168. and the vineyard

1169. is going to be given

  1170. to others.

  1171. In Matthew's account

  1172. it says

  1173. that the tenants

  1174. will give him

1175. the fruits of their season.

  1176. The others will be

  1177. new tenants

  1178. that will give him

  1179. fruits in their season.

  1180. So who is Jesus

  1181. referring to

  1182. when he talks about

  1183. the others?

  1184. Who is this vineyard

1185. going to be given to?

  1186. I think specifically

  1187. and firstly

  1188. we need to understand

  1189. to the apostles.

  1190. Already there's been

  1191. some authority shift.

  1192. Hasn't there?

  1193. Jesus has been teaching

  1194. them along the way

  1195. correcting their thinking.

  1196. He's given them

  1197. charge to go out

  1198. and preach the gospel

  1199. of the coming kingdom.

  1200. He's given them

1201. the ability to cast out

1202. demons and to heal people.

  1203. There's already been

  1204. a bit of a power shift

  1205. in the structure

  1206. already

  1207. and it will only

  1208. increase

1209. as he sends his spirit

  1210. the helper

  1211. to come along.

  1212. Jesus says

  1213. that the apostles

  1214. are going to do

  1215. greater works

  1216. than he does.

  1217. They're going to become

  1218. the new leaders.

  1219. The new tenants

  1220. over Israel

  1221. being God's people.

  1222. Remember that 21

  1223. verse 43 of Matthew

  1224. Therefore I tell you

  1225. the kingdom of God

1226. will be taken away from you

1227. and given to a people

  1228. producing

  1229. its fruits.

  1230. producing good works.

  1231. These would be the

  1232. new heralds

  1233. of the truth.

  1234. The guardians

  1235. of it.

  1236. So specifically

  1237. the apostles

  1238. and then beyond that

  1239. to us.

1240. We're in that lineage now

  1241. as those who believe

  1242. in the gospel

  1243. of Jesus Christ.

  1244. That message has passed

  1245. across the generations

  1246. and we are now

  1247. those heralds

  1248. of the truth.

1249. If you don't believe me

  1250. I think you do.

1251. But just in case you don't

  1252. let's turn to 1 Peter

  1253. together.

  1254. Chapter 2.

1255. The scriptures are such a wonderful

  1256. web interweaving

  1257. of symbolism

  1258. written across

  1259. so many years

1260. by so many different writers

  1261. but all inspired

1262. by the spirit of God.

  1263. 1 Peter

    1 Peter 2 chapter mention

  1264. chapter 2.

  1265. I'll begin reading

  1266. in verse 4.

1267. As you come to him

  1268. him is Jesus

  1269. here

  1270. a living stone

  1271. rejected by men

  1272. but in the sight

  1273. of God

  1274. chosen

  1275. and precious

  1276. you yourselves

  1277. like living stones

  1278. are being built up

  1279. as a spiritual house

1280. to be a holy priesthood

  1281. to offer spiritual sacrifices

  1282. acceptable to God

  1283. through Jesus Christ.

1284. So as we come to

  1285. Jesus Christ

  1286. the living stone

  1287. this cornerstone

  1288. we are also

  1289. stones

  1290. being built into

  1291. a house

  1292. to offer what?

  1293. Sacrifices

  1294. acceptable to God

  1295. through Jesus Christ.

  1296. Fruit

  1297. bearing good fruit

  1298. good works

  1299. preaching the gospel

  1300. loving our neighbors.

  1301. Verse 6

1302. For it stands in Scripture

  1303. Behold

1304. I am laying in Zion

  1305. a stone

  1306. a cornerstone

  1307. chosen

  1308. and precious

  1309. and whoever believes

  1310. in him

1311. will not be put to shame.

  1312. So the honor

  1313. is for you

  1314. who believe

  1315. but for those

  1316. who do not believe

  1317. the stone

  1318. that the builders

  1319. rejected

  1320. has become

  1321. the cornerstone

  1322. Does that sound familiar?

  1323. Verse 8

1324. And a stone of stumbling

1325. and a rock of fence

  1326. they stumble

  1327. because they disobey

  1328. the word

  1329. as they were destined

  1330. to do

  1331. but you are

  1332. a chosen race

  1333. a royal priesthood

  1334. a holy nation

  1335. a people

  1336. for his own possession

  1337. Why?

  1338. That you may proclaim

  1339. the excellencies

  1340. of him

  1341. who called you

  1342. out of darkness

  1343. into his marvelous light

  1344. That's why

  1345. we exist

  1346. church

  1347. Once you were

  1348. not a people

  1349. but now you are

  1350. God's people

  1351. Once you had

  1352. not received mercy

  1353. but now you have

  1354. received mercy

  1355. verse 10

  1356. is borrowing

  1357. from Hosea

  1358. What a beautiful

  1359. beautiful picture

  1360. this is

  1361. of us being

  1362. built into

  1363. a holy dwelling

  1364. place

  1365. for God

  1366. Do you see

  1367. the great

  1368. juxtaposition

  1369. here

  1370. in the story?

  1371. Jesus is using

  1372. this story

  1373. directly as an

  1374. indictment

  1375. against these men

  1376. that he's talking

  1377. to

  1378. but it broadens

  1379. out

  1380. as he talks

  1381. about who

  1382. he is

  1383. and we have

  1384. a great

  1385. understanding

  1386. now on

  1387. this side

  1388. of all

  1389. of the

  1390. gospel

  1391. realities

  1392. who we

  1393. are now

  1394. in

  1395. him

  1396. this is

  1397. why we're

  1398. created

  1399. this high

  1400. cost

  1401. of discipleship

  1402. for us to

  1403. walk in

  1404. all of us

  1405. all of us

  1406. a holy

  1407. priesthood

  1408. all of us

  1409. are meant to be

  1410. going and sharing

  1411. going and doing

  1412. it's not reserved

  1413. for my position

  1414. in this church

  1415. all of you have

  1416. been given

  1417. this responsibility

  1418. my job

  1419. primarily

  1420. is to help

  1421. you

  1422. go do

  1423. your job

  1424. 2nd

  1425. Corinthians

  1426. chapter 5

  1427. makes the

  1428. point again

  1429. and I'm going

  1430. to close

  1431. with this

  1432. 2nd

  1433. Corinthians

  1434. chapter 5

  1435. beginning

  1436. of verse

  1437. 17

  1438. therefore

  1439. if anyone

  1440. is in

  1441. Christ

  1442. he is a

  1443. new

  1444. creation

  1445. the old

  1446. is passed

  1447. away

  1448. behold

  1449. the new

  1450. has come

  1451. all this

  1452. is from

  1453. God

  1454. who through

  1455. Christ

  1456. reconciled

  1457. us to

  1458. himself

  1459. and gave

  1460. us the

  1461. ministry

  1462. of

  1463. reconciliation

  1464. understand

  1465. that we

  1466. are enemies

  1467. of God

  1468. and the

  1469. ministry

  1470. of reconciliation

  1471. is that we

  1472. help people

  1473. make peace

  1474. with God

  1475. verse 19

  1476. that is

  1477. in Christ

  1478. God was

  1479. reconciling

  1480. the world

  1481. to himself

  1482. not counting

  1483. their trespasses

  1484. against them

  1485. and entrusting

  1486. to us

  1487. the message

  1488. of reconciliation

  1489. therefore

  1490. we are

  1491. ambassadors

  1492. for Christ

  1493. God

  1494. making his

  1495. appeal

  1496. through us

  1497. we implore

  1498. you

  1499. on behalf

  1500. of Christ

  1501. be reconciled

  1502. to God

  1503. so if you

  1504. are in

  1505. Christ

  1506. you have

  1507. the ministry

  1508. of reconciliation

  1509. to be about

  1510. the work

  1511. of bringing

  1512. people to

  1513. peace

  1514. with God

  1515. and understand

  1516. beloved

  1517. this is a

  1518. big deal

  1519. just before

  1520. this in

  1521. 2nd

  1522. Corinthians

  1523. Paul said

  1524. that we

  1525. no longer

  1526. regard

  1527. anyone

  1528. according

  1529. to the

  1530. flesh

  1531. and what

  1532. he's

  1533. meaning

  1534. there

  1535. is

  1536. that

  1537. they

  1538. see

  1539. people

  1540. as

  1541. eternal

  1542. beings

  1543. no one's

  1544. life gets

  1545. snuffed out

  1546. and it

  1547. ends there

  1548. they go

  1549. on forever

  1550. and where

  1551. do they

  1552. go on

  1553. to

  1554. we should

  1555. really want

  1556. to know

  1557. this

  1558. we should

  1559. be really

  1560. concerned

  1561. about this

  1562. with everyone

  1563. we encounter

  1564. do you

  1565. understand

  1566. the weight

  1567. of sin

  1568. and its

  1569. subsequent

  1570. consequence

  1571. oh if you

  1572. do plead

  1573. with people

  1574. to come

  1575. to the

  1576. Lord

  1577. that they

  1578. might have

  1579. life now

  1580. and for

  1581. eternity

  1582. this is

  1583. the message

  1584. of

  1585. reconciliation

  1586. God has

  1587. granted it

  1588. to us

  1589. he makes

  1590. his appeal

  1591. through us

  1592. and that

  1593. appeal is

  1594. simply this

  1595. if you

  1596. do not

  1597. know

  1598. where you

  1599. stand

  1600. in this

  1601. if you

  1602. think

  1603. I may

  1604. I may

  1605. be in

  1606. the camp

  1607. of these

  1608. religious

  1609. elite

  1610. I go

  1611. through the

  1612. motions

  1613. I do

  1614. the things

  1615. outside

  1616. I'm looking

  1617. pretty good

  1618. inside

  1619. I'm full

  1620. of dead

  1621. people's

  1622. bones

  1623. I'm full

  1624. of hypocrisy

  1625. if you

  1626. think you

  1627. align with

  1628. them in

  1629. this way

  1630. this is

  1631. the appeal

  1632. to you

  1633. we implore

  1634. you

  1635. on behalf

  1636. of Christ

  1637. be reconciled

  1638. to God

  1639. let's pray

  1640. together
