  1. Mark chapter 12 will begin in verse 28.

    Mark 12 chapter mention

  2. And one of the scribes came up and heard them disputing with one another,

  3. ! And seeing that he answered them well, asked him,

  4. ! Which commandment is the most important of all?

  5. Jesus answered, The most important is,

  6. Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one.

  7. And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart,

  8. and with all your soul,

  9. and with all your mind,

  10. and with all your strength.

  11. The second is this,

  12. You shall love your neighbor as yourself.

  13. There is no other commandment greater than these.

  14. And the scribe said to him,

  15. You are right, teacher.

  16. You have truly said that he is one,

  17. and there is no other beside him.

  18. And to love him with all the heart,

  19. and with all the understanding,

  20. and with all the strength,

  21. and to love one's neighbor as oneself

  22. is much more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.

  23. And when Jesus saw that he answered wisely,

  24. he said to him,

  25. You are not far from the kingdom of God.

  26. And after that,

  27. no one dared to ask him any more questions.

  28. This is God's word to us.

  29. It was written for his glory and our good.

  30. We would all do well to listen to it

  31. in order to believe its promises

  32. and obey its commands.

  33. Let's pray together.

  34. Father, we would ask for your namesake

  35. that you would bless the preaching of your word.

  36. Lord, we all need you in this time.

  37. I need you to help me speak with clarity,

  38. with a compassion,

  39. and a conviction for the truth.

  40. And we all need you to rightly apply these words to our hearts.

  41. Change us from one degree of glory to another.

  42. Father, to the praise of Jesus.

  43. We pray this in his name.

  44. Amen.

  45. When we continue, if you're a guest with us,

  46. we've been working through the Gospel of Mark,

  47. verse by verse,

  48. and we've come now here to Mark 12.

  49. This is during the historical event of Passion Week.

  50. Jesus has come into Jerusalem on Monday.

  51. You can read about that at the beginning of chapter 11.

  52. On Monday, on Tuesday,

  53. he comes and he cleanses the temple.

  54. He goes in and he runs out the money changers,

  55. the people who were doing business in the temple court,

  56. the court of the Gentiles.

  57. He had, in fact, done so three years prior to this.

  58. We can read about this in the second chapter of John,

  59. that at the very beginning of his ministry,

  60. he went and did this very same thing,

  61. disrupted the temple practice of the day,

  62. the apostate worship that was going on,

  63. and he's now back.

  64. And he's in this final week,

  65. and we've come to Wednesday of this week.

  66. Jesus will be crucified on Friday.

  67. But here we find him having kind of dominated,

  68. having set up camp and taken over in the temple,

  69. having driven out those who were exchanging money

  70. and extorting the people,

  71. who were leading them astray,

  72. and he is set up, presumably, teaching.

  73. And as we see at the end of chapter 11

  74. and then into the beginning of chapter 12,

  75. we see a number of confrontations.

  76. 12.12, we see that as he indicts

  77. these apostate religious leaders,

  78. the text says,

  79. And they were seeking to arrest him,

  80. but feared the people,

  81. for they perceived that he had told the parable against them.

  82. So they left him and went away.

  83. So he's disrupting this temple worship that's going on

  84. and the power of these men.

  85. He's becoming more popular than them.

  86. And he's delivering indictments to them

  87. that's going to disrupt this place of power

  88. and influence and money that they're in.

  89. And so they're seeking to destroy him.

  90. This is absolutely what they're bent upon.

  91. But their concern is

  92. that the people have his...

  93. Or he has the people's ear.

  94. That he's found favor with the people.

  95. And so they're trying now

  96. to find ways to discredit him.

  97. And so we see in chapter 12,

  98. leading up to our text,

  99. they send a faction of Pharisees

  100. along with some Herodians,

  101. which was a political group,

  102. trying to trap him theologically and politically.

  103. They try to put him in a tough spot.

  104. And under inspiration from the Father,

  105. he makes fools of them.

  106. They then send to him a faction of Sadducees,

  107. another group of religious elite individuals

  108. with a theological trap.

  109. And once again, he makes fools of them.

  110. So rather than him being discredited,

  111. they are discredited.

  112. And in our text today,

  113. they send a scribe.

  114. Now, when we look at Mark 12, 28,

  115. the record is,

  116. and one of the scribes came up.

  117. And the scribes were kind of the

  118. religious scholars of the day.

  119. They were the learned,

  120. those who really poured over

  121. and really studied the Scriptures.

  122. In fact, you'll see them in places

  123. referred to as lawyers,

  124. not in that they defended it judicially,

  125. but that they were experts on the law.

  126. In the parallel text in Matthew 22,

    Matthew 22:34

  127. verse 34 and 35, it says,

  128. but when the Pharisees heard

  129. that he had silenced the Sadducees,

  130. they gathered together.

  131. So there's this meeting of the Pharisees

  132. and the Sadducees,

  133. these groups that very rarely agreed

  134. on much of anything at all,

  135. but they gather together.

  136. And then verse 35 says,

  137. and one of them, a lawyer or scribe,

  138. asked him a question to test him.

  139. So we get a little bit more

  140. as we look at the parallel text

  141. about why it was that this particular man came.

  142. So he heard them disputing,

  143. and he saw that he answered them well,

  144. and he said,

  145. but I've got a question.

  146. I've got a question for him

  147. that will stump him,

  148. that will discredit him.

  149. At the outset of this interaction,

  150. the scribe is not on Jesus' team,

  151. although it seems to shift

  152. as we go through our text today.

  153. Now, as I said,

  154. the Pharisees and the Sadducees

  155. didn't agree about much,

  156. but they did both esteem the law very highly.

  157. Both held a high degree of respect

  158. for the law.

  159. And there was a common debate amongst them

  160. about which law was the greatest law.

  161. This very question that the scribe

  162. is going to come and ask to Jesus.

  163. There was much debate about this.

  164. These men had little else to do

  165. than to sit around,

  166. collect people's money,

  167. and debate theology together.

  168. Shame on them and shame on us

  169. when we do the same.

  170. Rabbinical tradition holds

  171. that they considered there to be

  172. 613 separate commandments

  173. in the Old Testament,

  174. many of which were hedge laws

  175. or those traditional things

  176. added to the law

  177. to help the Jews

  178. from breaking any of the laws,

  179. hedge laws,

  180. but 613 separate commandments.

  181. And you may ask,

  182. how exactly did they arrive at this

  183. even as they were adding

  184. their tradition to it?

  185. And the foolish thing is

  186. that they arrived at 613

  187. because there are 613 letters

  188. in the Hebrew of the Ten Commandments.

  189. Isn't that ridiculous?

  190. So they took the Ten Commandments,

  191. they counted up the number of letters,

  192. there are 613,

  193. and then they came up with 613 laws

  194. that they said the Scriptures taught.

  195. Some were, of course,

  196. some were not.

  197. 248 affirmatives,

  198. things that should be done,

  199. and 365 negatives,

  200. one for every day of the year.

  201. It was rather ridiculous and foolish

  202. the way they had gathered

  203. these laws together.

  204. And so as I said,

  205. they debated often

  206. about the greatest law

  207. because they knew

  208. they couldn't keep the whole thing,

  209. right?

  210. Not all 613.

  211. They knew they were capable

  212. of doing this,

  213. of amassing enough good work

  214. to credit them before God.

  215. They knew their own frailty,

  216. but if they could just

  217. keep a couple of them,

  218. right?

  219. If we could reduce it

  220. to just a couple

  221. that are the most important,

  222. then maybe we can tip the scale

  223. in our favor.

  224. Maybe we can set off

  225. against all the other laws

  226. that we break.

  227. If we can get the couple

  228. that we think are most important

  229. right and set those

  230. on the good side of our scale,

  231. we'll find favor before God.

  232. This effort exists today

  233. in great degree,

  234. does it not?

  235. People running around

  236. trying to weigh out

  237. what is most important

  238. to live in society.

  239. And you'll hear people

  240. say things like,

  241. well, yeah,

  242. I think I'm a good person

  243. because,

  244. and I'll list off

  245. some major things,

  246. and they neglect

  247. other parts

  248. of God's standard.

  249. These people recognized

  250. that God had a standard,

  251. but they wanted to

  252. redefine the standard

  253. in a way

  254. that they could keep.

  255. But all of us,

  256. every single one of us,

  257. the great metanarrative

  258. of humanity

  259. is that we have failed

  260. to keep God's standard.

  261. In fact,

  262. we are incapable

  263. of our own power

  264. to do so.

  265. You know this to be true

  266. of yourself.

  267. If you are honest

  268. with yourself,

  269. you know that you cannot

  270. be a good person.

  271. You know how much

  272. bad you do.

  273. Even in the things

  274. that the world thinks

  275. are good,

  276. you know the motivation

  277. behind it is so often

  278. bad.

  279. If you're honest

  280. with yourself,

  281. if you're not,

  282. I suggest that you get

  283. honest with yourself.

  284. If you can't do that,

  285. if your conscience

  286. doesn't bear witness

  287. against you,

  288. your wife or your husband

  289. know how bad you are,

  290. how much you fail

  291. at holding to the standard

  292. of God.

  293. Your kids know.

  294. Young people,

  295. your parents,

  296. ask them,

  297. am I a good person?

  298. They will tell you

  299. the truth.

  300. Your roommate,

  301. your employer.

  302. We are all very aware

  303. of this reality.

  304. We are deluded

  305. and deceiving ourselves

  306. and others

  307. if we think

  308. that we're not.

  309. We think that we're

  310. good enough.

  311. And this is what

  312. they were about doing

  313. as they debated this

  314. and they had this

  315. conversation,

  316. this question.

  317. Jesus delivers

  318. an indictment to them

  319. in Mark 7,

    Mark 7:6–8

  320. verses 6-8.

  321. Mark records,

  322. and he said to them,

  323. Well, did Isaiah

  324. prophesy of you hypocrites?

  325. As it is written,

  326. This people honors me

  327. with their lips,

  328. but their heart

  329. is far from me.

  330. In vain do they

  331. worship me,

  332. teaching as doctrines

  333. the commandments

  334. of men.

  335. You leave the commandment

  336. of God and hold

  337. to the traditions

  338. of men.

  339. So these people

  340. had elevated

  341. their own idea

  342. of what it meant

  343. to follow God.

  344. They were worshiping

  345. the right God,

  346. but they were

  347. worshiping him

  348. wrongly.

  349. And this is a serious

  350. matter.

  351. This is a serious

  352. issue.

  353. It would seem

  354. that they were

  355. so close.

  356. They were Jews.

  357. They were descendants

  358. of Abraham.

  359. And yet,

  360. they had totally

  361. become apostate.

  362. They had totally

  363. wandered away

  364. from the faith

  365. of Abraham,

  366. that saving

  367. faith.

  368. And so this was

  369. a trap,

  370. this question

  371. was.

  372. Because the Sadducees

  373. and the Pharisees

  374. elevated,

  375. believed in,

  376. esteemed the law,

  377. although it was a

  378. very distorted

  379. misunderstanding of it.

  380. And they held a

  381. particular person

  382. in very high regard.

  383. They agreed

  384. that Moses

  385. was to be held

  386. in high esteem.

  387. There was no one

  388. greater than Moses.

  389. Moses,

  390. the one who was

  391. given the Ten

  392. Commandments

  393. on the mountain,

  394. who met with God

  395. face to face,

  396. whose face

  397. shone with the glory

  398. of God.

  399. You remember

  400. these stories,

  401. right?

  402. Moses had a close

  403. encounter with God.

  404. They esteemed him

  405. very highly.

  406. And so,

  407. when the scribe

  408. comes to ask Jesus

  409. this question,

  410. he's setting him up

  411. to have authority

  412. over Moses

  413. and therefore

  414. discredit himself.

  415. Therefore,

  416. have the people

  417. not follow him

  418. any longer.

  419. Now,

  420. of course,

  421. our Lord

  422. perfectly

  423. articulates

  424. a response.

  425. And he does so

  426. by quoting

  427. from the Old Testament,

  428. from Deuteronomy

  429. and from Leviticus.

  430. This scribe

  431. was sent on behalf

  432. of the Pharisees

  433. and the Sadducees.

  434. The Sadducees

  435. relegated.

  436. They didn't care

  437. too much

  438. about the prophets.

  439. They cared primarily

  440. about the first

  441. five books

  442. of the Bible.

  443. So he quotes

  444. from there.

  445. He gives them

  446. an answer

  447. that they would

  448. have been very,

  449. very familiar

  450. with.

  451. From Deuteronomy

  452. 6,

  453. 4 and 5,

  454. which reads,

  455. Hear, O Israel,

  456. the Lord our God,

  457. the Lord is one.

  458. This is a

  459. restatement

  460. of the law.

  461. Just as the people

  462. are about to go

  463. and take the land

  464. that God had promised

  465. to them.

  466. This is a restatement

  467. here.

  468. Verse 5,

  469. You shall love

  470. the Lord your God

  471. with all your heart

  472. and with all your soul

  473. and with all your might.

  474. And then Leviticus

  475. 19,

  476. 18 says,

  477. But you shall love

  478. your neighbor

  479. as yourself.

  480. And these sum up

  481. the rest of the law.

  482. We'll look at that a bit

  483. in just a minute.

  484. But these are the

  485. great commandment

  486. that Jesus speaks of

  487. here.

  488. And we could spend

  489. months

  490. unpacking

  491. and trying to understand

  492. all the implications

  493. of this command.

  494. In fact,

  495. we will spend our lives

  496. endeavoring to do so.

  497. To see what it means

  498. to love God

  499. and to love people

  500. in this way

  501. is the great endeavor

  502. of the Christian life.

  503. I hope we'll get

  504. enough of it

  505. this morning

  506. to set us on

  507. the right trajectory.

  508. That we'll have in mind

  509. what this looks like

  510. so that we can continue

  511. to do this

  512. in our life.

  513. And we'll continue on

  514. next week

  515. in Mark.

  516. The greatest commandment

  517. is a commandment

  518. to love.

  519. Verse 31b.

  520. A commandment.

  521. Jesus says

  522. there is no other

  523. commandment.

  524. Singular.

  525. It's singular in the original.

  526. There is no other commandment

  527. greater than

  528. these.

  529. So the great commandment

  530. is a commandment

  531. to love.

  532. To love vertically

  533. God

  534. and to have that

  535. spill over

  536. into a horizontal love

  537. for others.

  538. Vertical and horizontal

  539. love.

  540. Because you see,

  541. beloved,

  542. what we love

  543. directs

  544. how we act.

  545. The affections

  546. of your heart

  547. deem

  548. how you'll respond

  549. in any given

  550. circumstance.

  551. For example,

  552. if you love

  553. Georgia football,

  554. you're going to

  555. tend to do

  556. certain things.

  557. Are you not?

  558. I think we all

  559. either are

  560. or know

  561. Georgia football

  562. fans.

  563. You'll probably

  564. wear something

  565. red and black.

  566. I know

  567. that you're going

  568. to put things

  569. on Facebook

  570. regarding the game.

  571. Why do you

  572. live tweet

  573. and Facebook

  574. post a game?

  575. If somebody

  576. cares about it,

  577. they're watching it.

  578. I don't need

  579. to know the

  580. play-by-play.

  581. I know

  582. what you're

  583. going to be doing

  584. on the times

  585. when Georgia's

  586. playing,

  587. unless somebody

  588. plans a wedding.

  589. How dare you?

  590. During Georgia

  591. football season.

  592. It's going to

  593. dictate certain

  594. things.

  595. It's what you're

  596. going to talk

  597. about.

  598. People are

  599. very aware

  600. of those who

  601. love Georgia

  602. football.

  603. The same thing

  604. is true of our

  605. children,

  606. isn't it?

  607. I've got friends

  608. that vented

  609. about how moms

  610. always put stuff

  611. on Facebook

  612. about their

  613. children.

  614. I can't believe

  615. clogging up my

  616. feed with all

  617. these pictures

  618. of your babies

  619. and now they do

  620. it.

  621. It's just so

  622. wonderful.

  623. It's so

  624. ironic and

  625. apropos that

  626. they're now

  627. doing it as

  628. well and it's

  629. because they

  630. love their

  631. kids and they

  632. want to share

  633. their kids

  634. with the

  635. world.

  636. I don't fault

  637. them or the

  638. Georgia football

  639. fans for doing

  640. so.

  641. What we love

  642. directs how we

  643. act, how we

  644. respond.

  645. If we love

  646. God properly,

  647. we will love

  648. people properly

  649. and we will

  650. keep the

  651. commandments.

  652. we read

  653. beyond Jesus'

  654. quote in

  655. Deuteronomy.

  656. So he quotes

  657. from Deuteronomy

  658. 6, 4 and

  659. 5.

  660. Deuteronomy

  661. 6, 6

  662. says,

  663. and these

  664. words that I

  665. command you

  666. today shall

  667. be on your

  668. heart and it

  669. can also be

  670. very readily

  671. translated,

  672. shall be in

  673. your heart,

  674. planted in

  675. your heart.

  676. speaks of a

  677. change in

  678. our hearts

  679. themselves.

  680. Not merely

  681. some mental

  682. cognition to

  683. the law of

  684. God, but

  685. that the law

  686. of God is

  687. within us and

  688. therefore we

  689. respond as

  690. we should.

  691. It's an

  692. internal issue,

  693. not merely an

  694. external issue,

  695. it's an

  696. internal issue.

  697. Jesus says it

  698. this way,

  699. stated in the

  700. negative,

  701. Mark 7,

  702. 20-23,

  703. and he said,

  704. what comes

  705. out of a

  706. person is

  707. what defiles

  708. him.

  709. From within,

  710. out of the

  711. heart of man

  712. come evil

  713. thoughts,

  714. sexual immorality,

  715. theft,

  716. murder,

  717. adultery,

  718. coveting,

  719. wickedness,

  720. deceit,

  721. sensuality,

  722. envy,

  723. slander,

  724. pride,

  725. foolishness.

  726. He covers

  727. all the things

  728. that would

  729. transgress the

  730. law.

  731. All these

  732. evil things

  733. come from

  734. within and

  735. they defile

  736. a person.

  737. It's the

  738. matter of

  739. somebody's

  740. heart that

  741. makes them

  742. wrong before

  743. God,

  744. that makes

  745. them not

  746. able to

  747. stand in

  748. God's

  749. presence,

  750. that costs

  751. them,

  752. that gives

  753. to them

  754. eternal

  755. destruction.

  756. And so

  757. therefore it

  758. has to be

  759. in the

  760. positive that

  761. the other

  762. is true,

  763. that it

  764. comes from

  765. our heart,

  766. the good

  767. things that

  768. God requires

  769. of us.

  770. Because Jesus

  771. is stating it

  772. here in

  773. the positive.

  774. Elsewhere

  775. in the

  776. scriptures,

  777. John 14,

    John 14:21

  778. verse 21,

  779. Jesus says,

  780. whoever has

  781. my commandments

  782. and keeps

  783. them,

  784. he it is

  785. who loves

  786. me.

  787. And he

  788. who loves

  789. me will

  790. be loved

  791. by my

  792. Father,

  793. and I

  794. will love

  795. him and

  796. manifest

  797. myself to

  798. them.

  799. 1 John 2.15,

  800. John writes

  801. again,

  802. do not love

  803. the world

  804. or the things

  805. in the world.

  806. If anyone

  807. loves the

  808. world,

  809. the love

  810. of the

  811. Father is

  812. not in

  813. him.

  814. And so

  815. the adverse

  816. is true.

  817. If the love

  818. of the

  819. Father is

  820. in you,

  821. then you

  822. will not

  823. love

  824. the world.

  825. And this

  826. is at the

  827. very center

  828. of all

  829. of our

  830. experience

  831. and how

  832. it is

  833. we're trying

  834. to work

  835. out Christian

  836. living.

  837. It is a

  838. matter of

  839. our affection.

  840. What do

  841. we love?

  842. Those of us

  843. who have been

  844. redeemed,

  845. who have been

  846. set free

  847. from the

  848. bondage of

  849. sin,

  850. the great

  851. travesty

  852. of our

  853. sin is

  854. that we've

  855. been freed

  856. from it.

  857. We no

  858. longer have

  859. to.

  860. We've been

  861. freed to

  862. love God,

  863. but when we

  864. sin,

  865. it proves

  866. that in

  867. that moment

  868. we love

  869. the sin

  870. more than

  871. we love

  872. God.

  873. It's a

  874. tragedy.

  875. We do

  876. it all

  877. the time.

  878. We spit

  879. back in

  880. the face

  881. of the

  882. Father

  883. and praise

  884. God

  885. because of

  886. His goodness

  887. to us

  888. in Christ.

  889. He's

  890. forbearing

  891. and His

  892. love is

  893. never-ending.

  894. Now,

  895. the commandment

  896. in Deuteronomy

  897. 6.5

  898. says that

  899. we're to

  900. love the

  901. Lord our

  902. God with

  903. all our

  904. heart,

  905. with all

  906. our soul,

  907. with all

  908. our might.

  909. And so

  910. it's worth

  911. us talking

  912. about this.

  913. Jesus

  914. adds to

  915. that with

  916. our minds.

  917. So in

  918. brief,

  919. your heart

  920. is the

  921. core of

  922. who you

  923. are.

  924. From it

  925. emanates

  926. all of your

  927. thoughts,

  928. your words,

  929. your actions.

  930. It is the

  931. very core

  932. of your

  933. identity.

  934. Proverbs 4.23

  935. says,

  936. keep your

  937. heart

  938. with all

  939. vigilance

  940. for from

  941. it flow

  942. the springs

  943. of life.

  944. It is the

  945. very essence

  946. of who

  947. you are.

  948. Your soul

  949. is the

  950. seat of

  951. your

  952. emotions.

  953. Matthew

  954. 26.38

  955. Jesus says

  956. to them,

  957. my soul

  958. is very

  959. sorrowful

  960. even to

  961. death.

  962. And then

  963. He asks

  964. them to

  965. remain with

  966. Him

  967. in the

  968. garden

  969. to pray.

  970. My soul

  971. is the

  972. place from

  973. which emanates

  974. our

  975. emotions.

  976. Our

  977. mind,

  978. again,

  979. Jesus'

  980. addition here

  981. to the

  982. commandment

  983. in Deuteronomy,

  984. our intellect,

  985. our power

  986. of reason,

  987. our intention,

  988. our purpose.

  989. 1 Kings 4.29

  990. records that

  991. God gave

  992. Solomon wisdom

  993. and understanding

  994. beyond measure

  995. and breadth

  996. of mind

  997. like the

  998. sand on

  999. the seashore.

  1000. He made

  1001. him able

  1002. to understand,

  1003. able to

  1004. comprehend,

  1005. able to

  1006. hold out

  1007. cognition

  1008. and logic

  1009. and to

  1010. be wise

  1011. in his

  1012. judgment

  1013. over Israel.

  1014. And then

  1015. our strength

  1016. which speaks

  1017. to our

  1018. physical

  1019. energy.

  1020. In Deuteronomy

  1021. it's translated

  1022. our might.

  1023. That physical

  1024. energy that we

  1025. have,

  1026. the way in

  1027. which we

  1028. get up

  1029. and the

  1030. way that

  1031. we act,

  1032. the way

  1033. that we

  1034. carry out.

  1035. It's

  1036. every bit

  1037. of us.

  1038. These are

  1039. all the

  1040. components

  1041. that make

  1042. up a

  1043. human being.

  1044. Our heart,

  1045. our soul,

  1046. our mind.

  1047. our strength.

  1048. And before

  1049. each one of

  1050. these in

  1051. the original

  1052. language,

  1053. we see the

  1054. little phrase

  1055. all of

  1056. your,

  1057. all of

  1058. your heart

  1059. and all

  1060. of your

  1061. soul

  1062. and all

  1063. of your

  1064. mind

  1065. and all

  1066. of your

  1067. strength.

  1068. And the

  1069. original

  1070. doesn't say

  1071. with all

  1072. of your

  1073. heart,

  1074. soul,

  1075. mind,

  1076. and strength.

  1077. It puts

  1078. the emphasis

  1079. and puts

  1080. it before

  1081. the phrase

  1082. before each

  1083. one of

  1084. these

  1085. nouns

  1086. to say

  1087. every

  1088. single

  1089. bit.

  1090. All of

  1091. your heart,

  1092. all of

  1093. your soul,

  1094. all of

  1095. your mind,

  1096. all of

  1097. your strength.

  1098. We're not

  1099. to be

  1100. divided

  1101. in any

  1102. way,

  1103. but we're

  1104. to be

  1105. completely

  1106. devoted

  1107. in our

  1108. affection

  1109. to the

  1110. Lord.

  1111. John

  1112. MacArthur

  1113. said it

  1114. this way,

  1115. so the

  1116. intellectual,

  1117. emotional,

  1118. volitional,

  1119. and physical

  1120. elements of

  1121. personhood all

  1122. combine to

  1123. love the

  1124. one true

  1125. God.

  1126. It is an

  1127. intelligent

  1128. love.

  1129. It is an

  1130. emotional

  1131. love.

  1132. It is a

  1133. willing love.

  1134. And it is an

  1135. active love.

  1136. It is an

  1137. all-consuming

  1138. love.

  1139. This is the

  1140. way we are

  1141. to love

  1142. the Father.

  1143. Part of

  1144. the greatest

  1145. commandment.

  1146. How do

  1147. we do

  1148. that?

  1149. How is

  1150. this

  1151. possible?

  1152. Those of

  1153. us who

  1154. were once

  1155. enemies of

  1156. God have

  1157. now been

  1158. made His

  1159. friends by

  1160. the power

  1161. of the

  1162. gospel.

  1163. Our

  1164. hearts

  1165. have been

  1166. made new.

  1167. He is

  1168. redeeming

  1169. our

  1170. emotions

  1171. and our

  1172. mind.

  1173. We are

  1174. now capable

  1175. of being

  1176. set free

  1177. from sin

  1178. to live

  1179. to Him,

  1180. to live

  1181. to righteousness

  1182. by our

  1183. strength.

  1184. The natural

  1185. response of

  1186. the redeemed

  1187. soul is to

  1188. love the

  1189. one that

  1190. redeemed

  1191. Him.

  1192. So we

  1193. love God

  1194. because of

  1195. the gospel.

  1196. Verse 31,

  1197. the second

  1198. is this.

  1199. That was the

  1200. vertical element

  1201. of this

  1202. love,

  1203. affection set

  1204. on God.

  1205. The second

  1206. is this.

  1207. You shall

  1208. love your

  1209. neighbor as

  1210. yourself.

  1211. You shall

  1212. love your

  1213. neighbor as

  1214. yourself.

  1215. It shall

  1216. flow out

  1217. for your

  1218. love for

  1219. God to

  1220. other people

  1221. as well.

  1222. And your

  1223. neighbor is

  1224. anybody that

  1225. you encounter.

  1226. So don't

  1227. think we're

  1228. just merely

  1229. talking about

  1230. the person

  1231. who shares

  1232. a property

  1233. line or

  1234. a wall in

  1235. your dorm

  1236. or apartment.

  1237. This is

  1238. anybody that

  1239. you encounter.

  1240. It's those

  1241. people that

  1242. you work

  1243. with.

  1244. It's those

  1245. people that

  1246. ring you up

  1247. at the

  1248. places that

  1249. you buy

  1250. your groceries.

  1251. It's the

  1252. server,

  1253. server that

  1254. serves you,

  1255. that you

  1256. tip so

  1257. poorly.

  1258. Love these

  1259. people.

  1260. Love these

  1261. people.

  1262. Romans 13,

  1263. 8 and

  1264. 10,

  1265. Paul writes,

  1266. O no one

  1267. anything except

  1268. to love each

  1269. other.

  1270. For the one

  1271. who loves

  1272. another has

  1273. fulfilled the

  1274. law.

  1275. Isn't that

  1276. interesting?

  1277. Paul understood

  1278. the greatest

  1279. command.

  1280. For the one

  1281. who loves

  1282. another has

  1283. fulfilled the

  1284. law.

  1285. For the

  1286. commandments,

  1287. you shall

  1288. not commit

  1289. adultery,

  1290. you shall

  1291. not murder,

  1292. you shall

  1293. not steal,

  1294. you shall

  1295. not covet,

  1296. and any

  1297. other

  1298. commandment

  1299. are summed

  1300. up in

  1301. this word.

  1302. You shall

  1303. love your

  1304. neighbor as

  1305. yourself.

  1306. The last

  1307. four of the

  1308. ten commandments

  1309. he says are

  1310. summed up by

  1311. this and

  1312. any other

  1313. commandment,

  1314. any other

  1315. commandment

  1316. that is about

  1317. us relating

  1318. to one

  1319. another are

  1320. summed up

  1321. in the word.

  1322. You shall

  1323. love your

  1324. neighbor as

  1325. yourself.

  1326. Verse 10,

  1327. love does

  1328. no wrong

  1329. to a

  1330. neighbor,

  1331. therefore love

  1332. is the

  1333. fulfilling of

  1334. the law.

  1335. Paul wrote

  1336. again in

  1337. Galatians 5

  1338. 14,

  1339. for the

  1340. whole law

  1341. is fulfilled

  1342. in one

  1343. word,

  1344. you shall

  1345. love your

  1346. neighbor as

  1347. yourself.

  1348. And then

  1349. James writes

  1350. in chapter 2

  1351. verse 8,

  1352. the book of

  1353. James,

  1354. if you really

  1355. fulfill the

  1356. royal law

  1357. according to

  1358. the scripture,

  1359. you shall

  1360. love your

  1361. neighbor as

  1362. yourself.

  1363. You are

  1364. doing well.

  1365. How do we

  1366. love our

  1367. neighbor?

  1368. We love

  1369. our neighbors

  1370. sacrificially,

  1371. in practical

  1372. ways.

  1373. We empty

  1374. ourselves of

  1375. our self

  1376. determination,

  1377. our own

  1378. self glorification.

  1379. If we properly

  1380. love God,

  1381. if we are

  1382. humble before

  1383. Him,

  1384. we recognize

  1385. that this is

  1386. not a proper

  1387. thing for the

  1388. one who

  1389. worships God

  1390. to do,

  1391. and we serve

  1392. our neighbor

  1393. sacrificially.

  1394. We find

  1395. ways in

  1396. which we

  1397. can serve

  1398. them that

  1399. no one

  1400. else would

  1401. do.

  1402. We lay

  1403. down our

  1404. lives for

  1405. the sake

  1406. of their

  1407. lives.

  1408. And we

  1409. do this so

  1410. that we

  1411. can preach

  1412. the gospel

  1413. to them.

  1414. So that we

  1415. can give

  1416. them the

  1417. great solution

  1418. to their

  1419. major problem.

  1420. Remember

  1421. meta-narrative

  1422. problem.

  1423. We come

  1424. and we

  1425. fix the

  1426. little

  1427. problems.

  1428. We're

  1429. there as

  1430. a shoulder

  1431. to cry

  1432. on,

  1433. but then

  1434. we need

  1435. to give

  1436. them

  1437. Jesus.

  1438. So the

  1439. greatest

  1440. way that

  1441. you can

  1442. love

  1443. anybody,

  1444. fill their

  1445. belly,

  1446. and then fill

  1447. their soul.

  1448. Matthew 22,

  1449. 40,

  1450. Jesus says,

  1451. on these

  1452. two commandments,

  1453. this is the

  1454. parallel text,

  1455. depend all

  1456. the law

  1457. and the

  1458. prophets.

  1459. It's

  1460. fulfilled in

  1461. all of

  1462. this,

  1463. this vertical

  1464. access of

  1465. affection towards

  1466. God and

  1467. the horal

  1468. access of

  1469. it as

  1470. well.

  1471. And then

  1472. verse 32

  1473. of chapter

  1474. 12 of

  1475. Mark.

  1476. The

  1477. scribe seems

  1478. to be a

  1479. bit open-minded

  1480. as he comes

  1481. to him,

  1482. to test

  1483. him,

  1484. is very

  1485. pleased with

  1486. his answer

  1487. because he

  1488. repeats it

  1489. back.

  1490. The

  1491. scribe said

  1492. to him,

  1493. you are

  1494. right,

  1495. teacher,

  1496. you have

  1497. truly said

  1498. that he

  1499. is one.

  1500. We know

  1501. we're

  1502. worshiping

  1503. the right

  1504. God

  1505. together,

  1506. this God

  1507. that is

  1508. one.

  1509. There is

  1510. no other

  1511. besides

  1512. him.

  1513. And to

  1514. love him

  1515. with all

  1516. the heart,

  1517. with all

  1518. the understanding,

  1519. and with all

  1520. the strength,

  1521. and to love

  1522. one's neighbor

  1523. as oneself

  1524. is much

  1525. more than

  1526. all whole

  1527. burnt

  1528. offerings

  1529. and sacrifices,

  1530. he understands

  1531. that this

  1532. commandment is

  1533. greater than

  1534. all of the

  1535. temple worship

  1536. that was

  1537. going on

  1538. in this

  1539. day,

  1540. all of the

  1541. religious

  1542. practice

  1543. that was

  1544. happening.

  1545. And then

  1546. Jesus'

  1547. response,

  1548. when Jesus

  1549. saw that

  1550. he answered

  1551. wisely,

  1552. said to

  1553. him,

  1554. you are

  1555. not far

  1556. from the

  1557. kingdom of

  1558. God.

  1559. And then

  1560. Mark records

  1561. for us

  1562. that they

  1563. stop asking

  1564. questions,

  1565. and Jesus

  1566. spends the

  1567. rest of

  1568. Wednesday

  1569. teaching,

  1570. telling them

  1571. rather than

  1572. being on

  1573. the defense,

  1574. he's now

  1575. on the

  1576. offense in

  1577. the rest of

  1578. this chapter

  1579. and a bit

  1580. beyond that.

  1581. But he

  1582. says to

  1583. this scribe,

  1584. you are

  1585. not far

  1586. from the

  1587. kingdom of

  1588. God.

  1589. And this

  1590. gives me

  1591. some encouragement

  1592. for this

  1593. scribe's soul.

  1594. We don't get

  1595. a record of

  1596. what happens

  1597. to him.

  1598. He's nameless

  1599. in our text,

  1600. and he is in

  1601. all the parallel

  1602. texts as well.

  1603. I hope that

  1604. he got it.

  1605. I hope that

  1606. he witnessed

  1607. the crucifixion,

  1608. that he heard

  1609. of the

  1610. resurrection,

  1611. and he placed

  1612. believing faith

  1613. in Jesus

  1614. Christ,

  1615. but we

  1616. don't know.

  1617. But we

  1618. can say

  1619. this from

  1620. our text,

  1621. that not

  1622. far is

  1623. not good

  1624. enough.

  1625. Not far

  1626. from the

  1627. kingdom is

  1628. not in

  1629. the kingdom.

  1630. It wasn't

  1631. good enough

  1632. at this

  1633. point in

  1634. our text.

  1635. My dad,

  1636. all of my

  1637. life growing

  1638. up,

  1639. would say,

  1640. close only

  1641. counts in

  1642. horseshoes

  1643. and hand

  1644. grenades.

  1645. It's a

  1646. familiar phrase

  1647. to some of

  1648. you, I

  1649. can tell.

  1650. Close only

  1651. counts in

  1652. horseshoes,

  1653. hand

  1654. grenades.

  1655. It doesn't

  1656. count in

  1657. the kingdom

  1658. of God.

  1659. There's not

  1660. a measure.

  1661. We don't

  1662. vary in

  1663. degree.

  1664. We're good

  1665. enough to

  1666. get into

  1667. the kingdom

  1668. of God.

  1669. You either

  1670. are in

  1671. the kingdom

  1672. of God

  1673. or you

  1674. are not

  1675. in the

  1676. kingdom

  1677. of God.

  1678. You

  1679. either are

  1680. under God's

  1681. rule over

  1682. your life

  1683. because of

  1684. what Christ

  1685. has done on

  1686. your behalf.

  1687. God has

  1688. worked a

  1689. faith in

  1690. you that

  1691. you would

  1692. believe in

  1693. him and

  1694. he has

  1695. changed

  1696. you.

  1697. He's made

  1698. you a new

  1699. creation.

  1700. You are now

  1701. a citizen of

  1702. his kingdom,

  1703. no longer

  1704. his enemy,

  1705. but his

  1706. friend,

  1707. adopted as

  1708. a son,

  1709. redeemed,

  1710. you've been

  1711. bought with

  1712. a price.

  1713. That's either

  1714. true of

  1715. you or

  1716. it's not.

  1717. And at

  1718. this point,

  1719. this is the

  1720. case for

  1721. this man.

  1722. He had

  1723. the wisdom

  1724. to give a

  1725. wise answer,

  1726. but that

  1727. wasn't enough.

  1728. It wasn't

  1729. enough for

  1730. him just to

  1731. know the

  1732. truth and

  1733. give some

  1734. assent to

  1735. it in

  1736. his mind.

  1737. He had

  1738. to give

  1739. all of

  1740. himself,

  1741. pick up

  1742. his cross,

  1743. and follow

  1744. Jesus

  1745. Christ.

  1746. I hope

  1747. he did.

  1748. And I

  1749. hope that

  1750. all of

  1751. us in

  1752. this room

  1753. today are

  1754. doing the

  1755. same.

  1756. We must

  1757. enter the

  1758. kingdom of

  1759. God by

  1760. faith in

  1761. the completed

  1762. work of

  1763. Christ on

  1764. our behalf.

  1765. This man

  1766. recognizes that

  1767. it's an

  1768. internal issue.

  1769. That's to

  1770. his credit.

  1771. He gets

  1772. that it's an

  1773. internal issue

  1774. with his

  1775. mind.

  1776. He's yet to

  1777. be changed

  1778. internally.

  1779. We have

  1780. much to

  1781. praise God

  1782. for if

  1783. this is

  1784. true of

  1785. us.

  1786. Of all

  1787. the men

  1788. of Israel,

  1789. these scribes

  1790. should have

  1791. most understood,

  1792. most gotten

  1793. the scriptures.

  1794. They were

  1795. much smarter

  1796. than any

  1797. of us

  1798. in this

  1799. room.

  1800. But yet,

  1801. the truth

  1802. of God

  1803. had not

  1804. been revealed

  1805. to them.

  1806. Praise God

  1807. that he's

  1808. revealed his

  1809. truth to

  1810. simple minds

  1811. like mine.

  1812. That he

  1813. has rent

  1814. my heart.

  1815. He has

  1816. changed it.

  1817. From an

  1818. old heart.

  1819. A stony

  1820. heart.

  1821. A heart

  1822. that was

  1823. bent against

  1824. him and

  1825. set it in

  1826. his direction.

  1827. We have

  1828. much to

  1829. praise him

  1830. for.

  1831. If you

  1832. are not

  1833. found in

  1834. Christ,

  1835. if you

  1836. find yourself

  1837. relating to

  1838. these Pharisees

  1839. and Sadducees,

  1840. to these

  1841. scribes,

  1842. trying to

  1843. figure out

  1844. what are

  1845. the weightier

  1846. matters,

  1847. what things

  1848. must I

  1849. make sure

  1850. I'm doing

  1851. well to

  1852. earn favor

  1853. with God,

  1854. then I

  1855. would ask

  1856. that you

  1857. recognize

  1858. that nothing,

  1859. nothing earns

  1860. you favor

  1861. with God

  1862. except the

  1863. completed work

  1864. of Christ

  1865. on your

  1866. behalf.

  1867. He took

  1868. your place

  1869. on the

  1870. cross.

  1871. The song

  1872. Mercy that

  1873. Wes sang

  1874. was about

  1875. that.

  1876. He hung

  1877. on your

  1878. tree,

  1879. on your

  1880. behalf,

  1881. took the

  1882. wrath of

  1883. God for

  1884. your sin.

  1885. Those things

  1886. you've done,

  1887. those things

  1888. you're doing

  1889. even now,

  1890. and those

  1891. things you

  1892. will do,

  1893. this completed

  1894. work,

  1895. it is

  1896. finished.

  1897. If you

  1898. would just

  1899. believe in

  1900. Him.

  1901. Let's pray

  1902. together.
