  1. And amen. Please take out your copy of God's Word. Turn to the Gospel according to Mark, chapter 12.

    Mark 12 chapter mention

  2. ! Gospel of Mark, chapter 12. We're going to begin today in verse 35.

    Mark 12 chapter mention

  3. And as Jesus taught in the temple, He said,

  4. and for His glory and for our good, we would all do well to listen to it in order to believe its promises and obey its commands.

  5. Let's pray together.

  6. Father, we do praise You this day that You condescended to become an author,

  7. that You used men who were carried along by the Spirit to pen words that have bearing for us today.

  8. And so as we look at these three verses, this teaching of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ,

  9. I pray that You will work a miracle in us, that You will, by Your Spirit, rightly apply the truth contained in these verses to our hearts.

  10. Change us, Lord. Don't let us leave here looking like we did when we came in.

  11. Make us more like Your Son so that His name will be exalted in the region we live in and in the nations.

  12. And we pray this in the precious name of Christ. Amen.

  13. So if we continue our verse-by-verse exposition of the Gospel according to Mark,

  14. we are now in chapter 12, and this is Wednesday of the Passion Week.

  15. We've been in Wednesday of the Passion Week for quite a mile.

  16. We saw at the beginning of chapter 11 on Monday, Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem.

  17. Tuesday, He takes over the temple by turning over the money-changers tables,

  18. by stopping the court of Gentiles from being used as a thoroughfare.

  19. And on Wednesday, He's kind of set up camp in the temple,

  20. and He's been confronted by a number of groups of people,

  21. the Pharisees with the Herodians, the Sadducees,

  22. and then a scribe or a representative from the scribes.

  23. And He's encountered these confrontations back to back to back.

  24. Now, we kind of conclude those confrontations, which we did last week,

  25. and you'll see in verse 34 of chapter 12, the very end, Mark records,

  26. and after that, no one dared to ask Him any more questions.

  27. These men, these religious leaders, the elite religious of that day,

  28. were looking to make Him look like a fool,

  29. and in turn, He had done the very same to them.

  30. And so people have stopped asking Him questions.

  31. They have recognized that this is a foolish thing to do.

  32. Now, just in case you're wondering, as we've been in the text,

  33. and I've repeatedly said it is Wednesday of the week,

  34. and you're wondering when Wednesday will be over,

  35. not until the end of chapter 13.

  36. He'll be in the temple until the end of chapter 12,

  37. and then He leaves the temple and continues to teach

  38. some rather perplexing things in chapter 13,

  39. which I am eager to dive into.

  40. We find ourselves with these three incredibly important verses in front of us

  41. as He turns now to teach those who are gathered,

  42. specifically, in this case, the Pharisees.

  43. How do we know this?

  44. Because of a parallel text in Matthew.

  45. Matthew 22, verse 41 and 42.

    Matthew 22:41

  46. Matthew records,

  47. Now, while the Pharisees were gathered together,

  48. Jesus asked them a question.

  49. So Mark records Him just beginning to teach,

  50. but Matthew records that He actually was asking the Pharisees a question.

  51. Now, others would have been gathered around Him at this time,

  52. so others certainly would have been hearing the teaching,

  53. but He's aiming this question specifically at the Pharisees.

  54. And I think at this point, the value to us in recognizing this

  55. is to know that, by and large,

  56. these men would reject Jesus,

  57. these religious leaders of the day.

  58. These men were apostate.

  59. They were not worshipers of God.

  60. They thought they worshipped God.

  61. They thought they were worshipping the right God in the right way,

  62. but in fact, they were worshipping Him wrongly.

  63. They were outside the faith itself,

  64. and they were leading Israel in the same way.

  65. Jesus has harsh words for them all throughout the Gospels.

  66. He calls them repeatedly hypocrites, snakes.

  67. He calls them a brood of vipers.

  68. But He has not excluded them from responding in faith with repentance.

  69. Here He once again turns to encounter them,

  70. as we can see in Matthew 22 in this parallel text.

  71. Luke records for us about a man named Joseph of Arimathea.

  72. Most of you are probably familiar that this is the man who owned the tomb

  73. in which Jesus' body was laid.

  74. In Luke 23, verse 50 and 51, Luke records,

    Luke 23:50

  75. Now there was a man named Joseph from the Jewish town of Arimathea.

  76. He was a member of the council,

  77. a good and righteous man who had not consented to their decision and action.

  78. That was to crucify Christ.

  79. And he was looking for the kingdom of God.

  80. And so there were men numbered amongst these Pharisees and the Sadducees

  81. and the scribes that did respond in faith to the call of Christ.

  82. So here we see him doing that once again.

  83. And he asks them this interesting question in Matthew.

  84. What do you think about the Christ?

  85. And followed with the question,

  86. Whose son is He?

  87. And they respond to Him,

  88. this is in verse 42 of chapter 22 of Matthew,

  89. the Son of David.

  90. The Son of David.

  91. So their understanding of who the Messiah was to be

  92. is that He would be the Son of David.

  93. And they were right in that.

  94. But they didn't take it far enough.

  95. They understood some of the Old Testament prophecy,

  96. which we'll get to in just a moment.

  97. But they didn't understand the completion of it.

  98. In fact, the prevailing understanding of this day,

  99. of who the Messiah would be,

  100. would be an earthly man that would come

  101. and He would conquer and reign in an earthly fashion.

  102. He would come in a military way.

  103. In fact, these religious leaders were positioning themselves

  104. to be part of that leadership structure.

  105. When He came and overthrew Rome,

  106. they wanted to be first in line to have power

  107. and to have prestige.

  108. But instead, the Messiah comes

  109. as a servant from a lowly town,

  110. the son of a carpenter.

  111. One who comes and lays down His life and dies.

  112. Certainly reigns, but not in the way they thought.

  113. They thought He was merely,

  114. the Messiah was merely going to be a man

  115. who would come to reign on earth.

  116. But Jesus, rightly, is a son of David,

  117. the Messiah.

  118. Old Testament prophecy.

  119. 2 Samuel 7, verses 12 and 13.

    2 Samuel 7:12

  120. God speaking to David said,

  121. When your days are fulfilled,

  122. and you lie down with your fathers,

  123. I will raise up your offspring after you

  124. who shall come from your body,

  125. and I will establish His kingdom.

  126. He shall build a house for My name,

  127. and I will establish the throne of His kingdom forever.

  128. You see it in there?

  129. Son of David, the Messiah.

  130. Psalm 89, verses 1-4.

    Psalms 89:1–4

  131. This is the psalm of a man named Ethan.

  132. He writes,

  133. I will sing of the steadfast love of the Lord forever.

  134. With My mouth I will make known

  135. Your faithfulness to all generations.

  136. For I said,

  137. Steadfast love will be built up forever in the heavens.

  138. You will establish Your faithfulness.

  139. You have said,

  140. that is, God has said,

  141. I have made a covenant with My chosen one.

  142. I have sworn to David My servant.

  143. I will establish Your offspring forever,

  144. and build Your throne for all generations.

  145. And there are many other messianic prophecies

  146. that speak in the same way.

  147. That Jesus would, in fact,

  148. be a descendant of David.

  149. The people who encountered Jesus in His day

  150. understood this not too long ago.

  151. You'll recall in Mark 10, verses 47-48,

    Mark 10:47–48

  152. the healing of blind Bartimaeus.

  153. And in those verses,

  154. look at how Jesus is approached.

  155. Verse 47 says,

  156. And when He heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth,

  157. this is blind Bartimaeus,

  158. He hears that it's Jesus of Nazareth,

  159. He began to cry out and say,

  160. Jesus, Son of David,

  161. have mercy on Me.

  162. Verse 48,

  163. And many rebuked Him,

  164. telling Him to be silent,

  165. but He cried out all the more,

  166. Son of David,

  167. have mercy on Me.

  168. There's many other encounters

  169. in the very same way

  170. where people recognized

  171. that Jesus was,

  172. as the Messiah,

  173. the Son of David,

  174. that He was in the lineage of David.

  175. Matthew takes great effort

  176. to establish this

  177. in chapter 1

  178. of his Gospel account.

  179. Matthew 1, verse 1,

    Matthew 1:1

  180. the book of the genealogy

  181. of Jesus Christ,

  182. the Son of David,

  183. the Son of Abraham,

  184. working to establish

  185. that the Old Testament

  186. Messianic prophecy

  187. is fulfilled

  188. in the person of Jesus.

  189. Verse 17 of chapter 1 of Matthew,

  190. So all the generations

  191. from Abraham to David

  192. were 14 generations,

  193. and from David to the deportation

  194. to Babylon,

  195. 14 generations,

  196. and from the deportation

  197. to Babylon

  198. to the Christ,

  199. 14 generations.

  200. And He, at length,

  201. in those 15 verses in between,

  202. establishes that Jesus

  203. is in fact

  204. in the lineage of David.

  205. So they were right

  206. in that understanding,

  207. but they did not

  208. take it far enough.

  209. And this is the point

  210. that Jesus is making

  211. in our text today

  212. when He quotes from

  213. Psalm 110, 1,

  214. that He is the Messiah

  215. and He is to be worshipped

  216. as Lord.

  217. Not merely a man

  218. that would come and rule

  219. as a king,

  220. but He was to be worshipped

  221. as God.

  222. In the Old Testament,

  223. God gives Himself

  224. the name Lord.

  225. In Hebrew,

  226. the English pronunciation

  227. being Yahweh.

  228. In fact,

  229. Lordship is an

  230. Old Testament theme.

  231. Over and over,

  232. we are told that God

  233. performs His mighty deeds

  234. so that people

  235. will know

  236. that He is the Lord.

  237. Whether that's

  238. His people Israel

  239. or those outside,

  240. those who will be

  241. destroyed,

  242. who are not His people,

  243. we see this as a theme

  244. established again

  245. and again

  246. and again.

  247. Let's look at some examples.

  248. And I just encourage you

  249. to be an active listener.

  250. Don't turn.

  251. Listen.

  252. And write these down

  253. if you'd like to look

  254. at these references later.

  255. Exodus 14, 4.

  256. God says,

  257. And I will harden

  258. and I will harden

  259. Pharaoh's heart

  260. and he will pursue them

  261. and I will get glory

  262. over Pharaoh

  263. and all his hosts

  264. and the Egyptians

  265. shall know

  266. that I am

  267. the Lord.

  268. And they did so.

  269. Deuteronomy 4,

  270. 35

  271. To you it was shown

  272. that you might know

  273. that the Lord

  274. is God.

  275. There is no other

  276. besides Him.

  277. 1 Kings

  278. 20, 13

  279. in a prayer

  280. to be delivered

  281. from a king of Assyria.

  282. And behold,

  283. a prophet came near

  284. to Ahab king of Israel

  285. and said,

  286. Thus says the Lord,

  287. Have you seen

  288. all this great multitude?

  289. Behold,

  290. I will give it

  291. into your hands

  292. this day

  293. and you shall know

  294. that I am

  295. the Lord.

  296. Psalm 83, 18.

  297. Again,

  298. some deliverance

  299. from enemies.

  300. Verse 18,

  301. That they may know

  302. that you alone

  303. whose name is the Lord

  304. are the most high

  305. over all the earth.

  306. Again,

  307. Isaiah 37, 20.

  308. So now,

  309. O Lord our God,

  310. save us from His hand

  311. that all the kingdoms

  312. of the earth

  313. may know

  314. that you alone

  315. are the Lord.

  316. Ezekiel 6, 7.

  317. Last one.

  318. And the slain

  319. shall fall in your midst

  320. and you shall know

  321. that I am the Lord.

  322. So this is a theme

  323. that's established

  324. all throughout

  325. the Old Testament

  326. that God is Lord.

  327. That is,

  328. that He is to be worshipped

  329. with all that we have.

  330. That He is to set

  331. direction for us.

  332. We are to lay aside

  333. our self-direction

  334. and pick up His.

  335. That we are to follow Him

  336. with everything

  337. that we are.

  338. But it doesn't end there.

  339. Lordship is also a theme

  340. in the New Testament.

  341. In fact,

  342. the New Testament Greek

  343. word for Lord

  344. is applied regularly

  345. to Jesus Christ.

  346. A couple of examples.

  347. 1 Corinthians 12, 3.

  348. Therefore,

  349. I want you to understand

  350. that no one speaking

  351. in the Spirit of God

  352. ever says,

  353. Jesus is accursed.

  354. And no one can say,

  355. Jesus is Lord,

  356. except in the Holy Spirit.

  357. Philippians 2,

    Philippians 2:10

  358. verse 10 and 11.

  359. So that the name of Jesus,

  360. every knee should bow

  361. in heaven and on earth

  362. and under the earth,

  363. and every tongue confess

  364. that Jesus Christ

  365. is Lord

  366. to the glory of God,

  367. the Father.

  368. John 20, 28.

  369. This is after Thomas

  370. touches the risen Christ's side.

  371. Thomas answered Him,

  372. my Lord

  373. and my God.

  374. In fact,

  375. I would argue

  376. that the great theme

  377. of the Bible

  378. is the Lordship

  379. of Jesus Christ.

  380. That the redemption

  381. of our souls

  382. is ultimately

  383. about bringing us

  384. back into a relationship

  385. with Him

  386. and changing our hearts

  387. so that we can

  388. worship Him

  389. as the Lord of all.

  390. These men

  391. failed,

  392. by and large,

  393. not only to recognize

  394. that the Messiah

  395. was not merely

  396. the Son of David,

  397. but that He is,

  398. in fact,

  399. Lord.

  400. And so Jesus

  401. gives them

  402. a little sermon.

  403. Did you know

  404. that Jesus

  405. was an expeditional preacher?

  406. I bet

  407. that you guys

  408. wouldn't mind

  409. if my sermons

  410. were as short

  411. as His this morning.

  412. Jesus quotes

  413. from Psalm 110,

  414. 1.

  415. Now this is

  416. a massively

  417. important psalm.

  418. In fact,

  419. it's quoted

  420. more than any other psalm

  421. in the New Testament.

  422. I'm going to read to you

  423. Psalm 110,

    Psalms 110:1–4

  424. verses 1-4.

  425. It just sets

  426. a little more

  427. context for us.

  428. Remember

  429. that these men

  430. in the hearing of Jesus

  431. would have

  432. fully understood

  433. this psalm

  434. and beyond it.

  435. They just didn't get

  436. the implications

  437. of it.

  438. They had wrongly

  439. applied this psalm

  440. and Jesus corrects

  441. their thinking

  442. in this way.

  443. So I'm going to read to you

  444. Psalm 110,

    Psalms 110:1–4

  445. verses 1-4.

  446. The Lord says

  447. to my Lord,

  448. sit at my right hand

  449. until I make

  450. your enemies

  451. your footstool.

  452. This is what Jesus

  453. quotes.

  454. Verse 2,

  455. So this is a little

  456. broader context.

  457. text.

  458. And just as a bit

  459. of a side note,

  460. let me just show you

  461. some of the places

  462. that this is quoted

  463. elsewhere in the New Testament.

  464. Peter quotes from this psalm

  465. in his sermon

  466. on the day of Pentecost

  467. in Acts 2,

  468. 34-35.

  469. Paul quotes from this psalm

  470. in his explanation

  471. of Jesus' resurrection

  472. and subsequent reign

  473. in 1 Corinthians 15,

    1 Corinthians 15:27–28

  474. verses 27-28.

  475. The writer of Hebrews

  476. quotes from this psalm

  477. a number of times

  478. in making his case

  479. that Jesus is superior

  480. to angels

  481. in Hebrews 1-13

  482. and in teaching

  483. Jesus' supremacy

  484. over the present priesthood

  485. in Hebrews 5-6,

  486. 7-17,

  487. and 7-21.

  488. That is,

  489. that Jesus is

  490. a priest

  491. king.

  492. This is something

  493. that was forbidden

  494. all throughout

  495. the Old Testament

  496. and the only other character

  497. we see in the pages

  498. of Scripture

  499. that was both

  500. a priest and a king

  501. is a rather obscure character.

  502. One who is a priest king

  503. over the city of Shalom

  504. whose name was Melchizedek.

  505. And he shows up

  506. after Abraham's first

  507. battle conquest.

  508. Abraham gives to him

  509. a tenth of all the spoils.

  510. There's a prayer prayed

  511. over Abraham

  512. and he leaves

  513. and he doesn't show up again

  514. until the pages of Hebrews

  515. under the inspiration

  516. of the Spirit.

  517. So we see this priest king

  518. in this function

  519. and then we see Jesus

  520. functioning in this way.

  521. Some, I think, wrongly

  522. have said that was

  523. Jesus himself

  524. in Abraham's day.

  525. It doesn't really matter.

  526. The point being

  527. that Jesus now

  528. makes propitiation,

  529. makes sacrifice

  530. on our behalf

  531. the perfect sacrifice for us,

  532. stands in the gap

  533. between us and God

  534. and also rules over us

  535. as Lord.

  536. And this is what this psalm means.

  537. It's such a beautiful psalm

  538. speaking of the coming Christ.

  539. And Jesus very simply says to them

  540. using really basic logic,

  541. verse 37,

  542. if David himself calls him Lord,

  543. how is he merely his son?

  544. This is the way

  545. to understand this.

  546. How is he just his son?

  547. Just a son of flesh,

  548. right?

  549. That would come and rule

  550. in the way that David ruled.

  551. He would rule in a much more

  552. mighty way

  553. as a priest king.

  554. David recognized

  555. the coming Messiah

  556. as his Lord.

  557. This is the pressing point

  558. that Jesus is making.

  559. David got it.

  560. He got that the coming Messiah,

  561. the one that would be

  562. prophesied to be

  563. one day of his lineage,

  564. was the coming Lord.

  565. What you believe

  566. about Jesus

  567. is the most important thing

  568. about you.

  569. What we believe

  570. to be true about Jesus

  571. is the absolute most

  572. important thing

  573. about us.

  574. There are many

  575. erroneous understandings

  576. of who Jesus was

  577. or is,

  578. depending on the understanding.

  579. Muslims believe

  580. that he was a prophet,

  581. a real man.

  582. He existed.

  583. He was a prophet.

  584. He had wise things

  585. to say from God,

  586. but he was merely

  587. a predecessor of Muhammad.

  588. Jehovah's Witnesses

  589. believe that he was

  590. not God incarnate,

  591. but a created being.

  592. In fact,

  593. they believe that he was

  594. Michael the Archangel

  595. before he was recreated

  596. as a perfect man.

  597. Mormons,

  598. those known of

  599. the Church of Jesus Christ

  600. of Latter-day Saints,

  601. believe that Jesus

  602. was a, again,

  603. created being,

  604. a man who became

  605. a God,

  606. and therefore they believe

  607. that the same can be true

  608. of them.

  609. Many evangelicals

  610. believe that Jesus

  611. is their homeboy

  612. to their everlasting shame.

  613. And evangelicals

  614. also want to separate

  615. the recognition

  616. of Jesus as Savior

  617. from their devotion

  618. to Jesus as Lord.

  619. Two separate things.

  620. And I say to you

  621. that the two

  622. are inextricable.

  623. They cannot be separated.

  624. If Jesus is,

  625. in fact,

  626. your Savior,

  627. then he is,

  628. in fact,

  629. your Lord.

  630. Now,

  631. in Romans chapter 10,

    Romans 10 chapter mention

  632. some of this

  633. misunderstanding,

  634. verses 9 and 10,

  635. upon a simple reading

  636. of it,

  637. Paul writes,

  638. now in this

  639. is in the midst,

  640. remember,

  641. of him talking about

  642. God's sovereign purpose

  643. over saving a people,

  644. his elective purposes,

  645. that he has moved

  646. the gospel from beyond

  647. the Israelites

  648. to the Gentiles,

  649. but yet he's still

  650. including Jewish people

  651. in this.

  652. Paul says,

  653. chapter 10,

  654. verse 9,

  655. because if you confess

  656. with your mouth

  657. that Jesus is Lord

  658. and believe in your heart

  659. that God raised him

  660. from the dead,

  661. you will be saved.

  662. And then verse 10,

  663. for with the heart

  664. one believes

  665. and is justified,

  666. and with the mouth

  667. one confesses

  668. and is saved.

  669. And so they want to say

  670. that simply making

  671. a profession

  672. is salvific.

  673. Simply saying

  674. that I believe

  675. that Jesus is Lord

  676. is in and of itself

  677. salvific.

  678. But if you really look

  679. at these words,

  680. the word believe,

  681. every time it's used

  682. in the New Testament,

  683. it's one Greek word,

  684. and it's written

  685. in the indicative mood,

  686. which means that

  687. the writer's portraying

  688. something as actual,

  689. something that's actually

  690. carrying out

  691. and having real effect

  692. versus intended.

  693. So we may believe,

  694. I think most of you

  695. have probably flown

  696. on planes,

  697. but for those of you

  698. who haven't,

  699. I'm sure you believe

  700. that planes do fly.

  701. You've seen them fly.

  702. But it's not really

  703. a belief in this verb's sense

  704. until you get on the plane

  705. and let it take off.

  706. If you didn't believe

  707. you'd get back

  708. off the plane,

  709. at least I hope you would,

  710. unless you're just a fool.

  711. But it has real effect.

  712. It's working things out

  713. in your life.

  714. There's a result

  715. of the belief,

  716. something that is tangible,

  717. something that can be measured.

  718. But people try to pull them apart,

  719. and I think this often happens

  720. because of our experience

  721. in American evangelical Christianity.

  722. Many of you have had

  723. this experience.

  724. You come to faith.

  725. You believe you come to faith.

  726. Maybe you do.

  727. Maybe you don't.

  728. This is a big wrestling

  729. in your mind.

  730. But you come to faith

  731. at a very early age.

  732. You're taught the gospel

  733. in church and at home

  734. at a very, very early age.

  735. And you give some response.

  736. You give some opportunity

  737. to respond to the gospel.

  738. But then what happens

  739. is the church shelters you

  740. for decades.

  741. pulls you in

  742. and protects you

  743. from the world

  744. and maybe teaches you

  745. some things about being moral,

  746. like be obedient like Abraham

  747. or be brave like David,

  748. but doesn't really press you out

  749. into the world

  750. and see that as a Christian,

  751. you are automatically

  752. given a mission

  753. in this world.

  754. So there's an equipping period

  755. of 15 to 25 years.

  756. Someday you'll be grown up enough

  757. in your faith

  758. to begin to work with God

  759. in the world.

  760. This is a great shame.

  761. What does it take

  762. to be equipped to share

  763. the good news of Jesus Christ?

  764. If you're a believer,

  765. you have it.

  766. The Spirit of God

  767. and the gospel,

  768. which I hope you know

  769. because you responded to it

  770. in faith.

  771. You have this equipping,

  772. but we sit around

  773. on our hands

  774. just waiting

  775. and waiting

  776. and waiting.

  777. And so there's a fear

  778. for many evangelicals

  779. that we're going to tend

  780. towards a works-based salvation

  781. if we're saying to people

  782. in these settings

  783. that there must be

  784. something tangible.

  785. There has to be fruit.

  786. If you're going to be

  787. a good tree,

  788. there has to be fruit.

  789. Is this not scriptural?

  790. So what they want to do

  791. is say,

  792. you can just say

  793. that you're a good tree

  794. and that's good enough

  795. for us.

  796. Jesus is your Savior

  797. if you say you're a good tree.

  798. And at some point

  799. in your life,

  800. embrace Him as your Lord

  801. and begin to bear fruit.

  802. We cannot separate

  803. the two things, beloved.

  804. They cannot be

  805. separated apart.

  806. There's this great emphasis

  807. in our time

  808. placed on conversion

  809. at the neglect

  810. of discipleship.

  811. The Great Commission

  812. is for us to go

  813. and make disciples.

  814. There's this great emphasis

  815. on growing in breadth

  816. and not being concerned

  817. at all about growing

  818. in depth.

  819. If you're going

  820. to follow Jesus,

  821. you cannot simply

  822. follow Him

  823. to the end of an aisle

  824. and stop there.

  825. It does not work

  826. that way.

  827. And this is what Jesus

  828. is saying

  829. to the Pharisees.

  830. They were going

  831. through the religious motions.

  832. Some of them

  833. were the right motions.

  834. Just done

  835. with the wrong

  836. motivation.

  837. Right?

  838. We are to

  839. empty

  840. ourselves.

  841. ourselves.

  842. Self-determining.

  843. We no longer

  844. worship us.

  845. We now worship

  846. Jesus

  847. as Lord.

  848. This isn't new

  849. at this point

  850. in the text.

  851. He said this before.

  852. Turn back to Mark

    Mark 8 chapter mention

  853. chapter 8.

  854. beginning of verse 34.

  855. And calling the crowd

  856. to Him

  857. with His disciples,

  858. He said to them,

  859. If anyone

  860. would come after Me,

  861. follow Me,

  862. Be My disciple.

  863. Let Him deny Himself

  864. and take up His cross

  865. and follow Me.

  866. Oh, you can meditate

  867. on this for your

  868. entire life.

  869. Verse 35,

  870. For whoever would

  871. save his life

  872. will lose it.

  873. But whoever loses

  874. his life for My sake

  875. and the Gospels

  876. will save it.

  877. Empty ourselves

  878. and follow Jesus

  879. to go wherever

  880. He goes.

  881. And beloved,

  882. there is so

  883. much example

  884. given to us

  885. of the way

  886. in which Jesus

  887. functioned

  888. and the places

  889. in which He went

  890. that we have

  891. plenty of growing

  892. to do

  893. in this regard.

  894. Listen to Paul's

  895. exhortation

  896. in 2 Corinthians 13.5.

  897. Examine yourselves

  898. to see whether

  899. you are in the faith.

  900. Test yourselves.

  901. Or do you not

  902. realize this

  903. about yourselves

  904. that Jesus Christ

  905. is in you?

  906. Unless indeed

  907. you fail

  908. to meet the test.

  909. What is this test

  910. that we're being

  911. exhorted to do?

  912. I have sat

  913. under many,

  914. many preachers

  915. that want to make

  916. this test

  917. the remembering

  918. of a date

  919. and an activity,

  920. an action.

  921. Tell me that's not

  922. works-based.

  923. Right?

  924. Write it down.

  925. Oh, write it down

  926. in the front of your Bible

  927. so if you ever have

  928. a doubt,

  929. you can look

  930. at that page

  931. and then you'll know

  932. that you're found

  933. in Christ.

  934. That you've declared

  935. yourself a good tree.

  936. Phariseeism.

  937. This is a message

  938. from the devil.

  939. Air conditioning.

  940. Right?

  941. On a train ride

  942. to hell.

  943. This is not good

  944. for people to hear.

  945. What is the test?

  946. The test is fruit.

  947. And we're exhorted

  948. to do it.

  949. Now hear me,

  950. the works do not

  951. save us.

  952. But the works

  953. are the evidence

  954. of God's salvific work

  955. in our hearts.

  956. If I asked you

  957. this morning,

  958. how do you know

  959. this morning

  960. that you're alive?

  961. None of you would say,

  962. because I have a birth date.

  963. Let me share my birth date

  964. with you.

  965. You would give some evidence

  966. to that fact.

  967. Well, I'm standing

  968. in front of you.

  969. Look, I'm doing the things

  970. that living people do.

  971. Right?

  972. Descartes would have said,

  973. I think, therefore,

  974. I am.

  975. Right?

  976. None of you would go,

  977. well, I have a birth date.

  978. So, of course,

  979. I'm alive.

  980. This is foolishness

  981. and this is what is happening

  982. in our churches.

  983. Turn to 1 John 3.

  984. The great effort

  985. of John's first letter

  986. is to give us

  987. a lens by which

  988. to hold our lives up to,

  989. to compare to.

  990. How do we test ourselves?

  991. How do we know?

  992. How do we know?

  993. 1 John 3,

  994. beginning in verse 4.

  995. Everyone who makes

  996. a practice of sinning

  997. also practices lawlessness.

  998. Sin is lawlessness.

  999. You know that He appeared

1000. in order to take away sins

1001. and in Him there is no sin.

  1002. This is Christ.

  1003. Verse 6.

1004. No one who abides in Him

  1005. keeps on sinning.

1006. No one who keeps on sinning

  1007. has either seen Him

  1008. or known Him.

  1009. Little children,

1010. let no one deceive you.

  1011. Whoever practices righteousness

  1012. is righteous

  1013. as He is righteous.

  1014. Whoever makes a practice

  1015. of sinning

  1016. is of the devil

  1017. for the devil

  1018. has been sinning

  1019. from the beginning.

1020. The reason the Son of God

  1021. appeared was to destroy

1022. the works of the devil.

1023. No one born of God

  1024. makes a practice

  1025. of sinning.

  1026. For God's seed

  1027. abides in Him

1028. and He cannot keep on sinning

  1029. because He has been

  1030. born of God.

1031. By this it is evident

1032. who are the children of God

1033. and who are the children

  1034. of the devil.

  1035. Whoever does not

  1036. practice righteousness

  1037. is not of God

  1038. nor is the one

  1039. who does not love

  1040. his brother.

  1041. We are all indicted

  1042. by these words,

  1043. are we not?

1044. So we need to wrestle

1045. with this a little bit.

  1046. Right?

1047. All of you who are perfect,

  1048. raise your hand.

  1049. No one, right?

  1050. None of us, right?

1051. We have been set free

  1052. from sin

  1053. and yet we continue

  1054. to sin.

  1055. The great struggle

  1056. of Paul

  1057. in Romans chapter 7.

    Romans 7 chapter mention

  1058. This body of death

  1059. that he carries around

  1060. that draws him

  1061. into the things

  1062. that he doesn't

  1063. want to do.

1064. And this is the nature

  1065. of Christian living.

  1066. This ebb and flow

  1067. of righteousness.

  1068. Seasons even

  1069. that we go through

  1070. in our Christian lives.

  1071. And so John

1072. is not saying to us

  1073. that if you sin

  1074. you are not found

  1075. in Christ.

  1076. There's a status,

  1077. right,

1078. that is given to us

  1079. by our faith

  1080. in him.

  1081. But the general

  1082. trajectory of our living

  1083. should be towards

  1084. righteousness.

  1085. righteousness.

  1086. I don't know if

  1087. everyone in the room

  1088. can see the bald

  1089. cypresses outside.

1090. Do you see this orange

  1091. tree that's blocking

  1092. that entire window

  1093. right there?

  1094. There's two of them

  1095. on either side

  1096. of the sidewalk.

  1097. And these are really,

  1098. really neat trees

  1099. called bald cypresses.

1100. And most of the year

  1101. they're very green

  1102. and beautiful.

  1103. They're a deciduous

  1104. pine tree

  1105. and they turn

  1106. this beautiful orange

1107. color for like a week

  1108. and they drop

  1109. all of the needles.

  1110. Likely,

  1111. next week

  1112. there will be not

  1113. a single needle

  1114. on either of those

  1115. two trees

  1116. and they'll all be

  1117. all over the ground

  1118. desperately needing

  1119. to be cleaned up

  1120. from the sidewalk

  1121. down there.

  1122. A really fascinating

  1123. tree.

  1124. A good portion

  1125. of the year

  1126. these trees look dead.

  1127. Totally lifeless.

  1128. If you didn't know

  1129. what they were

  1130. you would definitely

  1131. cut them down.

  1132. You'd go,

  1133. this looks kind of

  1134. like a pine tree

1135. with no needles on it.

  1136. It's definitely dead.

1137. Our lives are that way

  1138. at times.

  1139. No real experience

1140. of the presence of God

  1141. in our lives.

1142. We just seem to love

  1143. sin so much

  1144. appearing dead.

  1145. I've been coming

  1146. to this building now

1147. for quite a few years

1148. and I can tell you

  1149. that the general trajectory

  1150. of these trees

  1151. is that they're alive.

  1152. Every year

  1153. when they look dead

  1154. I know that they're not dead

  1155. because they continue

  1156. to grow

1157. and year by year by year

1158. they get a little bit bigger

  1159. and they encroach

  1160. on the building

  1161. a little bit more

1162. and a few more branches

1163. have to be pruned off of them

1164. so that we can walk

  1165. down the sidewalk

  1166. and the roots

  1167. continue to advance

  1168. across the playground

  1169. and pop up

  1170. from time to time

  1171. across the playground

  1172. like I know

  1173. that they're alive

  1174. because of the general

  1175. presence of life

  1176. in those trees.

  1177. So John's not saying

1178. to us that we have

  1179. to be perfect

  1180. in every way

1181. but that we should be

  1182. generally hating sin

  1183. and generally

  1184. loving righteousness.

1185. if this isn't true of you

  1186. then you are not

  1187. found in Christ.

  1188. You have not

  1189. recognized Him

  1190. as Lord.

  1191. You've added Him

1192. as a slip of paper

  1193. of fire insurance policy

  1194. that you folded up

  1195. and you stuck

  1196. in your back pocket

1197. which is of no value

  1198. to you whatsoever.

  1199. If your heart

  1200. has not been changed

  1201. if you have not

  1202. been propelled

  1203. by the work

  1204. in your heart

  1205. of the Holy Spirit

  1206. to follow Him

  1207. to worship Him

  1208. as Lord

  1209. then you are not

  1210. found in Him.

  1211. Repent

  1212. and believe.

  1213. Repent and believe.

  1214. Pray that He would

  1215. do a work

  1216. in your life

  1217. like that.

1218. And for those of us

  1219. who have recognized

  1220. Him as Lord

  1221. but yet deal with

  1222. the day-to-day

  1223. how do we continue

  1224. to submit ourselves

  1225. to Him as Lord?

  1226. I have to say

  1227. that that very question

  1228. which I know

  1229. none of you asked

1230. but I posed it to you

  1231. as well

  1232. demands the point

  1233. that I'm making.

  1234. Those of us

  1235. who are found

  1236. in Christ

  1237. who call Him

  1238. Savior and Lord

  1239. should know

  1240. how to follow Him.

  1241. He has spoken

  1242. to us

  1243. by His

  1244. Word.

  1245. This is the way

  1246. in which we came

  1247. to Him

  1248. by the work

  1249. of the Spirit

  1250. in our lives

  1251. that we would

  1252. continue in that

  1253. and that we would

  1254. go to His Word

  1255. to know Him.

  1256. This is the way

  1257. in which we continue

  1258. to submit to Him.

  1259. Young people

  1260. so many of you

  1261. want to know

  1262. the will of God

  1263. for your life

  1264. but it has really

  1265. nothing to do

  1266. with Lordship

  1267. and submitting

  1268. yourself to Him

  1269. day by day

  1270. week by week.

  1271. It's really just

  1272. because you want

  1273. answers

1274. and it is your hope

  1275. that if it's God's answer

1276. that it's going to be

  1277. a good one

  1278. that's going to work

  1279. out favorable

  1280. for you.

  1281. Self-serving

  1282. in that way.

  1283. You don't submit

  1284. yourselves daily

  1285. to the Lord

  1286. and say

  1287. what would you

  1288. have me do

  1289. in this day?

  1290. What major

  1291. should I have?

  1292. Who should I marry?

  1293. Where should I live?

  1294. Where should I invest

  1295. in church?

  1296. Who should I be

  1297. sharing the Gospel

  1298. with?

  1299. Your search

  1300. serves your ends

  1301. and not His.

  1302. Many of you

  1303. want to know

  1304. the will of God

  1305. but you don't

  1306. know your Bible

  1307. and He has revealed

  1308. His will to us

  1309. in the Scriptures.

  1310. Our Lord

  1311. has written us

  1312. a book.

  1313. We should know it.

  1314. Why do we neglect

  1315. this so much?

  1316. Recognize

1317. that there is a battle

  1318. a war being waged

  1319. within you

  1320. to get you away

  1321. from this book.

  1322. To hear God speak

  1323. day by day

  1324. by day

  1325. and submit yourself

  1326. to what He would

  1327. have you do.

  1328. Practice

  1329. the revealed

  1330. will of God.

  1331. All that other stuff

  1332. the petty stuff

  1333. who you'll marry

  1334. where you'll work

  1335. where you'll live

1336. where you'll go to church

  1337. will all sort out

  1338. in the end.

  1339. Submit yourself

  1340. to the Lordship

  1341. of Jesus Christ.

  1342. Stop being

  1343. self-determining

  1344. and then always

  1345. submit

  1346. to Him.

1347. This is what it means

  1348. to be a Christian,

  1349. to be

  1350. a disciple

  1351. of our Savior

  1352. and Lord

  1353. Jesus Christ.

  1354. Let's pray together.

  1355. Let's pray together.
