  1. The text before us today is Mark chapter 12, verse 38 through 44.

    Mark 12:38–44

  2. Now, let me remind you before we read this where we are.

  3. ! We're in the Passion Week.

  4. Jesus is now in Jerusalem.

  5. On Friday, He will be crucified.

  6. And this is Wednesday.

  7. And we've been here for a while now in Wednesday.

  8. And we'll be here for about a month more.

  9. On Monday, He entered into Jerusalem.

  10. The praise of the people.

  11. The triumphal entry is what it's often called.

  12. Tuesday, He goes back in.

  13. He goes out for a while.

  14. He goes back in.

  15. He takes over the temple by overturning the money changers' tables

  16. and stopping the court of Gentiles from being used as a thoroughfare.

  17. And then on Wednesday, He's now encountered this wave of confrontations.

  18. First from the Pharisees, along with a political group called the Herodians.

  19. Then the Sadducees.

  20. And then a scribe.

  21. One who's a professional in the law.

  22. And in verse 34 of chapter 12, we see,

  23. And after that, no one dared to ask Him any more questions.

  24. Because all who had come to Him, who had sought to make a fool of Him,

  25. He turned back around and made fools of them.

  26. And so they've ceased asking questions.

  27. And in verse 35, He then begins to teach.

  28. Let's read together, beginning in verse 38.

  29. And in His teaching, He said,

  30. Beware of the scribes who like to walk around in long robes

  31. and like greetings in the marketplaces

  32. and have the best seats in the synagogues

  33. and the places of honor at feasts,

  34. who devour widows' houses and for a pretense make long prayers.

  35. They will receive the greater condemnation.

  36. And He sat down opposite the treasury

  37. and watched the people putting money into the offering box.

  38. Many rich people put in large sums.

  39. And a poor widow came and put in two small copper coins,

  40. which make a penny.

  41. And He called His disciples to Him and said to them,

  42. Truly I say to you,

  43. this poor widow has put in more than all those

  44. who are contributing to the offering box,

  45. for they all contributed out of their abundance,

  46. but she, out of her poverty,

  47. has put in everything she had,

  48. all she had to live on.

  49. This is God's Word to us.

  50. It was written for His good,

  51. or excuse me, for His glory,

  52. and our good.

  53. My brain is still catching up this morning.

  54. We would all do well to listen to it

  55. in order to believe its promises

  56. and obey its commands.

  57. Let's pray together.

  58. Father God, we certainly do praise You this morning

  59. for the blessing of Your Word,

  60. for becoming an author,

  61. for inspiring men by Your Spirit

  62. to pen these words for us today.

  63. Father, we ask for a great miracle in my speaking,

  64. that You would guard me from air,

  65. that I would lead people well by Your Word.

  66. And we also ask for a great miracle in the hearing,

  67. that the Spirit would apply the words that I speak

  68. concerning Your Word

  69. to people's hearts appropriately,

  70. that they might respond appropriately.

  71. All of this to the praise of Your glorious name.

  72. And we pray this in Christ's name.

  73. Amen.

  74. Amen.

  75. So, as I said, we are in Wednesday.

  76. And just to give you a little bit of an idea

  77. of where we're headed to,

  78. at the end of chapter 12,

  79. Jesus heads out of the temple

  80. and continues to teach about the end of all things

  81. through the end of chapter 13.

  82. Beginning of chapter 14,

  83. we'll then get into Thursday.

  84. I've managed to sit down and plot out the timeline

  85. for the rest of Mark.

  86. And praise God,

  87. we get to actually preach on the resurrection on Easter.

  88. I'm so thankful that it turned out in that way.

  89. So you may be asking,

  90. why is it that these two texts are placed together?

  91. Why 38 through 40 and then 41 through 44?

  92. Because certainly those two things

  93. seem to be able to stand alone.

  94. And we could.

  95. It could be preached that way.

  96. Though I think you'll find,

  97. and I'll hope to show you,

  98. the great theme that exists

  99. between the two of them.

  100. They are actually tied together thematically.

  101. I'm not doing that just to keep the timeline

  102. of getting us to the resurrection on Easter.

  103. Very important that we wrap our minds around

  104. why Jesus says the one,

  105. and then He says the next.

  106. And the major theme that ties it together

  107. is this nature,

  108. this situation that's before them

  109. of these false teachers.

  110. Jesus here calls them scribes.

  111. For a particular group,

  112. although they weren't an official religious group,

  113. they weren't an official political faction,

  114. they were just the extra learned men.

  115. Most likely Pharisees.

  116. This was typically the case.

  117. These men were experts in the law.

  118. They knew the law very, very well.

  119. They were the theologians,

  120. so to speak, of the day.

  121. John MacArthur said,

  122. the Jews had a saying

  123. that Moses received the law

  124. and gave it to Joshua.

  125. Joshua received the law

  126. and gave it to the elders.

  127. The elders received the law

  128. and gave it to the prophets.

  129. The prophets received the law

  130. and gave it to the scribes.

  131. They were the professionals.

  132. They were the experts of this day.

  133. And everybody trusted them

  134. and hung on what it was they had to say

  135. concerning the law.

  136. But Jesus gives to us

  137. a very strong warning

  138. concerning these men.

  139. He says to us,

  140. beware of the scribes.

  141. Strong warning.

  142. And let me say to you

  143. that as a general habit,

  144. it is healthy and right

  145. to be known for what we're for

  146. rather than for what we're against.

  147. Although,

  148. there's a great deal of value at times.

  149. From time to time to stop

  150. and to recognize the wrong

  151. in order to maintain the right.

  152. And this is what Jesus is doing here.

  153. He's making a very emphatic point

  154. to the disciples

  155. and those others

  156. that are listening to Him

  157. that this is not the way

  158. to worship God.

  159. There's a right way

  160. to worship the right God.

  161. And these men

  162. really worship themselves,

  163. but in this pursuit

  164. of worshiping God,

  165. were doing so wrongly.

  166. In fact, they were apostate.

  167. They were outside

  168. any favor of God's blessing.

  169. And they were leading the people

  170. in the same way.

  171. Jesus says some very stark things

  172. about them

  173. that they are sons of Satan

  174. and they're making sons of Satan.

  175. Matthew 23, 15 says,

  176. Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees,

  177. hypocrites!

  178. For you travel across sea and land

  179. to make a single proselytite

  180. or convert.

  181. And when he becomes

  182. a proselytite,

  183. you make him twice as much

  184. a child of hell

  185. as yourselves.

  186. They were leading people astray.

  187. And you have to understand

  188. that there's not a continuum

  189. for the way in which people are led.

  190. You either are going to lead people

  191. in the way of God

  192. or you're going to lead people

  193. in the way of Satan.

  194. And that's where these men

  195. find themselves.

  196. Now, there's a scope to this warning

  197. which exists all throughout

  198. the Scriptures.

  199. I'll give you one Old Testament example.

  200. Ezekiel 13,

  201. false prophets are condemned.

  202. And in chapter 14,

  203. idolatrous elders are condemned

  204. for the way in which

  205. they led the people astray.

  206. Jesus said in Matthew 7, 15,

  207. beware of false prophets

  208. who come to you

  209. in sheep's clothing,

  210. but inwardly are ravenous wolves

  211. dressed up.

  212. They look good on the outside,

  213. but truly they come

  214. to devour and to destroy.

  215. Paul says in 2 Corinthians 11,

    2 Corinthians 11:13–15

  216. verse 13 through 15,

  217. for such men are false apostles,

  218. deceitful workmen,

  219. disguising themselves

  220. as apostles of Christ.

  221. And no wonder,

  222. for even Satan disguises himself

  223. as an angel of light.

  224. So it is no surprise

  225. of his servants

  226. also disguise themselves

  227. as servants of righteousness.

  228. Put on the dressings,

  229. the trappings of good,

  230. but ultimately,

  231. they're aimed at evil.

  232. Paul makes an emphatic charge

  233. to Timothy in 1 Timothy

  234. on a number of occasions.

  235. I'll let you read those

  236. on your own later.

  237. Chapter 1, verses 3 through 7.

  238. Chapter 4, verses 1 and 2.

  239. Chapter 6, verses 3 through 5.

  240. The major charge to him

  241. is that he preserve sound doctrine

  242. among the church at Ephesus.

  243. Peter also gives warning to this

  244. in 2 Peter 2, verse 1.

    2 Peter 2:1

  245. But false prophets

  246. also arose among the people,

  247. just as there will be

  248. false teachers among you

  249. who will secretly bring in

  250. destructive heresies,

  251. even denying the Master

  252. who bought them,

  253. bringing upon themselves

  254. swift destruction.

  255. 1 John 4, verse 1.

    1 John 4:1

  256. Many false prophets

  257. have gone out into the world.

  258. And so this is to be

  259. the reality of things,

  260. that in this day,

  261. there was warning about it

  262. in the Old Testament.

  263. Jesus said it would be true.

  264. Certainly there are scribes

  265. in this day

  266. that he is giving strong

  267. warning against.

  268. And the apostles warn

  269. in those churches

  270. it would be true

  271. as well as in our day.

  272. And it's certainly

  273. our experience at this

  274. is the case.

  275. Many false teachers

  276. leading people ultimately astray.

  277. And we tend to categorically

  278. put some people way off,

  279. way off in left field

  280. who do this very thing.

  281. But there really isn't a spectrum.

  282. This makes me tremble.

  283. I want to rightly handle

  284. the Word of God.

  285. I cannot say to you

  286. that I have never erred.

  287. I am sure that I have.

  288. Probably someday

  289. I will go back

  290. and listen to some old

  291. recording of a sermon

  292. and ask that it all be destroyed

  293. because I messed it up.

  294. If we do not walk in the truth,

  295. then we walk in a lie.

  296. Any believable lie

  297. contains within it

  298. some measure of truth.

  299. This is the great deception of Satan.

  300. He takes things that are true

  301. and he distorts them.

  302. Things that are bizarrely false

  303. no one believes.

  304. It's a very bizarre lie

  305. and no one would ever believe it.

  306. But if you anchor it

  307. in some truth,

  308. then it becomes believable.

  309. And this is the great deception

  310. of Satan.

  311. And therefore,

  312. all men who even speak

  313. some truth,

  314. but yet mixed within it lies,

  315. are they themselves not liars?

  316. Servants of Satan.

  317. It's a great strong warning here.

  318. Beware.

  319. This is the exhortation

  320. that Jesus is giving to us.

  321. Beware.

  322. The explicit thing

  323. that He's trying to tell us.

  324. But what can we draw out

  325. of who these people are?

  326. How can we help to identify

  327. these people?

  328. And He gives to us

  329. some nature.

  330. So we see a warning

  331. firstly in verse 38.

  332. Then going on,

  333. verse 38,

  334. and into the following,

  335. we see the nature

  336. of their hypocrisy.

  337. It says,

  338. to like to walk around

  339. in long robes

  340. and like greetings

  341. in the marketplaces

  342. and have the best seats

  343. in the synagogues

  344. and the places of honor

  345. at feasts

  346. who devour widows' houses

  347. and for pretense

  348. make long prayers.

  349. These men like to walk around

  350. in their ceremonial robes,

  351. these long decorative robes

  352. so they can be picked out

  353. of a crowd

  354. so you can see them coming

  355. and know that here comes

  356. a great learned man,

  357. a wonderful follower of God.

  358. In the parallel passage,

  359. Matthew 23,

  360. Matthew records

  361. that they make their fringes long.

  362. At the bottom of these robes

  363. were blue fringes.

  364. In fact,

  365. it was commanded

  366. in Numbers 15

  367. that the Jewish people

  368. were to put little blue tassels

  369. on the bottom of their robes

  370. to identify themselves as Jews

  371. and to identify themselves

  372. as those who gave their attention

  373. to God

  374. and their attention

  375. to God's word.

  376. It was meant to be a reminder

  377. of this very thing.

  378. In fact,

  379. in Matthew 9,

    Matthew 9:20

  380. verse 20,

  381. most of you are familiar

  382. with the miracle

  383. of the woman

  384. with the discharge of blood

  385. who touches the fringes

  386. of Jesus' garment.

  387. That's what she touched

  388. were these tassels

  389. that would have been

  390. on the edge

  391. of his garment.

  392. So it wasn't wrong

  393. to do that,

  394. but these men

  395. were elevating.

  396. They were making

  397. their tassels extra long

  398. to say to others,

  399. we are extra devoted.

  400. We are extra followers

  401. of God.

  402. Please pay attention to us

  403. and what it is

  404. we have to say.

  405. They like to walk around

  406. in these long robes

  407. and they like to receive

  408. greetings

  409. in the marketplaces.

  410. Now,

  411. he's not talking here

  412. about people saying

  413. hello to them.

  414. I like it when people say

  415. hello to me.

  416. He's talking about

  417. pomp and circumstance

  418. type of greetings.

  419. Again,

  420. in the parallel passage,

  421. Matthew 23,

    Matthew 23:7

  422. verse 7,

  423. it adds that they like

  424. to be called

  425. rabbi

  426. or teacher

  427. or my master.

  428. This is a great,

  429. high,

  430. elevated title

  431. given to these men,

  432. which is why

  433. I don't care much

  434. at all for titles.

  435. You'll never hear me

  436. call myself

  437. Pastor Nathan.

  438. My email

  439. just is Nathan

  440. at our website.

  441. If you want to call me

  442. Pastor,

  443. I consider that an honor,

  444. but I don't seek out

  445. that type of thing.

  446. This type of title

  447. is a lot like

  448. people who earn

  449. PhDs

  450. or doctors of ministry

  451. and want to be called

  452. doctor.

  453. Now,

  454. clearly,

  455. it is a lot of work.

  456. It's a massive amount

  457. of work to earn

  458. these degrees

  459. and MD,

  460. I will include

  461. in that.

  462. And in some sense,

  463. these people deserve

  464. to be called

  465. doctor.

  466. In fact,

  467. I will call

  468. anybody doctor

  469. until they ask me

  470. to do it.

  471. They deserve

  472. some commendation

  473. for them,

  474. but as soon as

  475. somebody says,

  476. oh,

  477. excuse me,

  478. that's doctor

  479. so-and-so,

  480. well,

  481. they have just

  482. ensured that

  483. I will never

  484. call them

  485. doctor so-and-so.

  486. We get on a

  487. first-name basis

  488. at that point.

  489. This is what

  490. these men

  491. are looking for.

  492. Oh,

  493. great,

  494. learned doctor,

  495. rabbi,

  496. let us step

  497. out of your way

  498. and let you

  499. pass.

  500. This type of

  501. honor is what

  502. they sought

  503. in the market

  504. places.

  505. In addition to

  506. that,

  507. they sought

  508. the best seats

  509. in the synagogues

  510. and the places

  511. of honor

  512. at feasts.

  513. They wanted

  514. to be placed

  515. first in all

  516. of their social

  517. circumstances.

  518. When they gathered

  519. for worship

  520. together and

  521. when they gathered

  522. to eat food,

  523. they wanted

  524. to be placed

  525. at the very

  526. highest place

  527. to be shown

  528. honor in that

  529. way.

  530. Jesus has

  531. been speaking

  532. directly against

  533. this type

  534. of attitude

  535. leading up

  536. to our text

  537. today.

  538. Flip back

  539. just a couple

  540. of pages

  541. starting in

  542. Mark 8,

    Mark 8:34

  543. verse 34.

  544. I've shown you

  545. this theme

  546. a number of times.

  547. I want to show

  548. you to it once more.

  549. Mark 8,

  550. 34-36.

  551. If anyone

  552. would come

  553. after me,

  554. let him deny

  555. himself

  556. and take up

  557. his cross

  558. and follow me.

  559. This is

  560. antithesis

  561. to long

  562. fringed

  563. robes

  564. and seeking

  565. honor in

  566. things.

  567. Verse 35,

  568. for whoever

  569. would save

  570. his life

  571. will lose it,

  572. but whoever

  573. loses his life

  574. for my sake

  575. in the Gospels

  576. will save it.

  577. For what

  578. does it

  579. profit a man

  580. to gain

  581. the whole

  582. world

  583. and to

  584. forfeit

  585. his soul?

  586. To gain

  587. all of that

  588. honor,

  589. but yet

  590. to be found

  591. outside the

  592. faith.

  593. Chapter 9,

  594. verse 35,

  595. If anyone

  596. will be

  597. first,

  598. he must

  599. be last

  600. of all

  601. and servant

  602. of all.

  603. Not self-exalting,

  604. but self-emptying

  605. in service

  606. to others.

  607. Chapter 10,

  608. verse 44

  609. and 45,

  610. and Jesus

  611. then gives

  612. to us

  613. the extent

  614. of this

  615. sacrifice.

  616. Whoever

  617. would be

  618. first among

  619. you must

  620. be slave

  621. of all.

  622. For even

  623. the Son

  624. of Man

  625. came

  626. not to

  627. be served,

  628. but to

  629. serve,

  630. and to

  631. give his

  632. life

  633. as a

  634. ransom

  635. for many.

  636. To show

  637. honor to

  638. other people,

  639. to love

  640. them even

  641. to the

  642. point

  643. of death.

  644. Jesus

  645. told a

  646. parable

  647. that's

  648. recorded

  649. in Luke

    Luke 14 chapter mention

  650. chapter 14,

  651. beginning

  652. in verse

  653. 7.

  654. He says,

  655. Now he

  656. told a

  657. parable

  658. to those

  659. that were

  660. invited

  661. when he

  662. noticed

  663. how they

  664. chose

  665. the

  666. places

  667. of honor,

  668. saying

  669. to them,

  670. When you

  671. are invited

  672. by someone

  673. to a

  674. wedding

  675. feast,

  676. do not

  677. sit down

  678. in a

  679. place

  680. of honor,

  681. lest

  682. someone

  683. more

  684. distinguished

  685. than

  686. you

  687. be invited

  688. by him.

  689. And he

  690. who

  691. invited

  692. you

  693. both

  694. will

  695. come

  696. and

  697. say

  698. to

  699. you,

  700. Give

  701. your

  702. place

  703. to

  704. this

  705. person,

  706. and

  707. then

  708. you

  709. will

  710. begin

  711. with

  712. shame

  713. to

  714. take

  715. the

  716. lowest

  717. place.

  718. But

  719. when

  720. you

  721. are

  722. invited,

  723. go

  724. and

  725. sit

  726. in

  727. the

  728. lowest

  729. place,

  730. so that

  731. when

  732. your

  733. host

  734. comes,

  735. he

  736. may

  737. say

  738. to

  739. you,

  740. friend,

  741. move

  742. up

  743. higher.

  744. Then

  745. you

  746. will

  747. be

  748. honored

  749. in

  750. the

  751. presence

  752. of

  753. all

  754. who

  755. sit

  756. at

  757. table

  758. with

  759. you.

  760. For

  761. everyone

  762. who

  763. exalts

  764. himself

  765. will

  766. be

  767. humbled,

  768. and

  769. he

  770. who

  771. humbles

  772. himself

  773. will

  774. be

  775. exalted.

  776. And

  777. he's

  778. speaking

  779. an

  780. indictment

  781. on

  782. these

  783. men

  784. who

  785. place

  786. themselves

  787. in

  788. positions

  789. of

  790. honor.

  791. And

  792. the

  793. groomsmen

  794. will

  795. come

  796. to

  797. them

  798. one

  799. day

  800. and

  801. put

  802. them

  803. in

  804. the

  805. lowliest

  806. of

  807. places.

  808. That

  809. is

  810. the

  811. place

  812. of

  813. eternal

  814. destruction.

  815. They

  816. thought

  817. that

  818. they

  819. deserved

  820. the

  821. favor

  822. of

  823. God,

  824. that

  825. they

  826. as we

  827. ought

  828. to,

  829. putting

  830. ourselves

  831. in

  832. the

  833. lowliest

  834. place.

  835. Certainly

  836. we

  837. deserve

  838. eternal

  839. damnation

  840. for our

  841. sin,

  842. and yet

  843. the

  844. groom

  845. will

  846. come

  847. to

  848. us

  849. and

  850. say,

  851. please

  852. come

  853. and

  854. sit

  855. in

  856. this

  857. honored

  858. place.

  859. Jesus

  860. was

  861. never

  862. self-exalting.

  863. In fact,

  864. he was

  865. constantly

  866. self-abasing,

  867. constantly

  868. pointing to

  869. God the

  870. Father as

  871. the source

  872. of all

  873. the things

  874. that he

  875. did.

  876. He

  877. did

  878. nothing

  879. on his

  880. own

  881. initiative.

  882. John

  883. records this

  884. for us

  885. again and

  886. again.

  887. He

  888. acted,

  889. and he

  890. only

  891. spoke

  892. as he

  893. saw

  894. the

  895. Father

  896. doing.

  897. He

  898. exalted

  899. the

  900. Father

  901. in

  902. all

  903. that

  904. he

  905. did.

  906. Isn't

  907. it

  908. interesting

  909. that we

  910. live in

  911. a day

  912. and age

  913. that if

  914. you're

  915. going to

  916. be

  917. popular

  918. in the

  919. Christian

  920. world,

  921. you have

  922. to be

  923. self-exalting

  924. instead

  925. of self-emptying?

  926. You have

  927. to be

  928. incredibly

  929. active

  930. with your

  931. blogs

  932. and your

  933. Twitter

  934. feed,

  935. and you

  936. have to

  937. be

  938. constantly

  939. touting

  940. all the

  941. things

  942. that you

  943. know

  944. and all

  945. that you

  946. can

  947. do.

  948. Adfinitum,

  949. if you're

  950. going to

  951. be popular

  952. in this

  953. day,

  954. I want to

  955. be like

  956. Jesus,

  957. and I

  958. also don't

  959. like

  960. social media.

  961. It works

  962. out,

  963. right?

  964. Now it

  965. says,

  966. please don't

  967. draw that as

  968. a direct

  969. connection,

  970. right?

  971. It says

  972. that they

  973. like to

  974. walk around.

  975. Now there's

  976. an interesting

  977. verb here,

  978. they like,

  979. and it means

  980. more so than

  981. just what we

  982. would think of

  983. as like,

  984. that they

  985. desire these

  986. things,

  987. that they

  988. love these

  989. things,

  990. right?

  991. This is the

  992. very existence

  993. of their

  994. being,

  995. this type

  996. of praise

  997. being heaped

  998. upon them.

  999. And so,

  1000. as Jesus

  1001. is saying

  1002. to them

  1003. and to

  1004. us,

  1005. beware of

  1006. the scribes,

  1007. beware of

  1008. these false

  1009. teachers,

  1010. he's saying

  1011. to them,

  1012. beware of

  1013. people who

  1014. are self-exalting.

  1015. Beware of

  1016. people who

  1017. are self-exalting.

  1018. Now we'll

  1019. skip down

  1020. for a moment

  1021. and see

  1022. that they

  1023. also make

  1024. a pretense

  1025. of long

  1026. prayers.

  1027. They make

  1028. a pretense

  1029. of long

  1030. prayers.

  1031. For the

  1032. sake of

  1033. appearance

  1034. would be

  1035. another way

  1036. to say

  1037. that.

  1038. Some of

  1039. your

  1040. translations

  1041. may.

  1042. For the

  1043. sake of

  1044. appearance,

  1045. they make

  1046. long

  1047. prayers.

  1048. When Jesus

  1049. teaches the

  1050. disciples how

  1051. to pray,

  1052. Matthew 6,

  1053. 5 says,

  1054. and when you

  1055. pray,

  1056. you must not

  1057. be like

  1058. the hypocrites.

  1059. That's who he's

  1060. referring to.

  1061. For they love

  1062. to stand and

  1063. pray in the

  1064. synagogues

  1065. and at the

  1066. street corners.

  1067. They may be

  1068. seen by

  1069. others.

  1070. Truly I

  1071. say to you,

  1072. they have

  1073. received their

  1074. reward.

  1075. They like to

  1076. put on the

  1077. pretense.

  1078. They like to

  1079. act righteous

  1080. on the

  1081. outside and

  1082. like to do

  1083. so in such

  1084. a way that

  1085. everyone can

  1086. see it.

  1087. Not in the

  1088. quiet,

  1089. hidden,

  1090. secret places,

  1091. but out where

  1092. everyone can

  1093. see.

  1094. And they put a

  1095. great show

  1096. on so that

  1097. they will be

  1098. praised.

  1099. Jesus says

  1100. beware of the

  1101. scribes,

  1102. the false

  1103. teachers.

  1104. Beware of

  1105. people who

  1106. merely put on

  1107. the appearance

  1108. of holiness.

  1109. And then

  1110. lastly,

  1111. in the

  1112. nature,

  1113. we see that

  1114. these men

  1115. devour

  1116. widows'

  1117. houses.

  1118. They devour

  1119. widows'

  1120. houses.

  1121. Now,

  1122. for the sake

  1123. of time,

  1124. I won't

  1125. develop thematically

  1126. for you all

  1127. of God's

  1128. commands to

  1129. care for

  1130. widows,

  1131. but they

  1132. are many,

  1133. 20 to 30

  1134. different times

  1135. in the Old

  1136. Testament.

  1137. There are

  1138. commands to

  1139. care for

  1140. widows,

  1141. to look out

  1142. for them.

  1143. And these

  1144. men were

  1145. doing the

  1146. very opposite

  1147. of that.

  1148. As they

  1149. still believed,

  1150. even though

  1151. they were

  1152. under Roman

  1153. rule,

  1154. that they

  1155. lived a

  1156. theocracy,

  1157. in many

  1158. ways,

  1159. these men

  1160. ruled.

  1161. They were

  1162. part of

  1163. the ruling

  1164. class,

  1165. the Sanhedrin,

  1166. those who

  1167. sat in

  1168. judgment over

  1169. Israel,

  1170. and they

  1171. were experts

  1172. in the

  1173. law,

  1174. and so

  1175. they did

  1176. things,

  1177. they managed

  1178. to do

  1179. things in

  1180. being asked

  1181. to help

  1182. with estates

  1183. from these

  1184. widows.

  1185. They did

  1186. manipulative

  1187. things to

  1188. take advantage

  1189. of them.

  1190. They took

  1191. advantage of

  1192. their

  1193. property,

  1194. they would

  1195. stay at

  1196. their homes,

  1197. and eat

  1198. their food,

  1199. and they

  1200. would find

  1201. ways in

  1202. which to

  1203. actually keep

  1204. their

  1205. property.

  1206. Above and

  1207. beyond that,

  1208. they developed

  1209. a system that

  1210. wasn't just

  1211. oppressive to

  1212. widows,

  1213. but all people

  1214. generally,

  1215. which said that

  1216. you must buy

  1217. the favor of

  1218. God.

  1219. There were

  1220. 13 offering

  1221. boxes in

  1222. the temple

  1223. where you

  1224. would put

  1225. your money

  1226. to buy

  1227. God's

  1228. favor.

  1229. favor.

  1230. And this

  1231. was a

  1232. system that

  1233. presumably

  1234. the people

  1235. didn't care

  1236. for.

  1237. I think

  1238. they knew

  1239. that they

  1240. were being

  1241. swindled,

  1242. which is

  1243. likely why

  1244. they began

  1245. to pay

  1246. attention to

  1247. Jesus when

  1248. he overturned

  1249. the money

  1250. changers table.

  1251. They liked

  1252. that.

  1253. Here was a

  1254. man who

  1255. was coming

  1256. and flying

  1257. in the face

  1258. of all

  1259. that was

  1260. being done

  1261. in the

  1262. name of

  1263. God

  1264. to take

  1265. advantage

  1266. of the

  1267. people,

  1268. and they

  1269. began to

  1270. listen.

  1271. This is

  1272. why these

  1273. groups of

  1274. men,

  1275. these religious

  1276. leaders,

  1277. were so

  1278. offended at

  1279. what Jesus

  1280. was doing

  1281. because he

  1282. was disrupting

  1283. that system.

  1284. He was

  1285. cutting off

  1286. their flow

  1287. of income

  1288. in this

  1289. way.

  1290. The more

  1291. I study,

  1292. Mark,

  1293. the more

  1294. I understand

  1295. I could

  1296. actually put

  1297. myself in

  1298. the shoes

  1299. of these

  1300. religious

  1301. leaders,

  1302. why they

  1303. would have

  1304. been so

  1305. upset at

  1306. Jesus,

  1307. even to

  1308. the point

  1309. of death.

  1310. They

  1311. worshipped

  1312. themselves.

  1313. They worshipped

  1314. the system

  1315. they had

  1316. established.

  1317. They worshipped

  1318. all of the

  1319. fame and

  1320. honor that

  1321. came to

  1322. them,

  1323. and Jesus

  1324. came to

  1325. destroy

  1326. that kind

  1327. of self

  1328. exaltation.

  1329. So they

  1330. devoured

  1331. widows'

  1332. houses,

  1333. the very

  1334. lowliest

  1335. of society

  1336. that should

  1337. have been

  1338. cared for

  1339. and supported

  1340. by the

  1341. law of

  1342. God.

  1343. They did

  1344. the very

  1345. opposite

  1346. of that

  1347. thing

  1348. with the

  1349. structure

  1350. that they

  1351. created.

  1352. This is

  1353. true in

  1354. our day

  1355. as well.

  1356. Many

  1357. false

  1358. teachers,

  1359. most of

  1360. them that

  1361. you can

  1362. see on

  1363. TV,

  1364. not all

  1365. but most

  1366. on TV,

  1367. who just

  1368. want a

  1369. little seed

  1370. gift,

  1371. just want

  1372. you to

  1373. order up

  1374. the prayer

  1375. rug,

  1376. which is

  1377. a piece

  1378. of paper

  1379. strangely,

  1380. right?

  1381. That are

  1382. going to

  1383. give you

  1384. some kind

  1385. of a

  1386. thing

  1387. that's

  1388. going to

  1389. bless

  1390. you

  1391. more.

  1392. If they

  1393. could just

  1394. wring a

  1395. little bit

  1396. more out

  1397. of you.

  1398. You know

  1399. some of

  1400. these people.

  1401. Joel Osteen,

  1402. Joyce Meyer,

  1403. T.D.

  1404. Jakes,

  1405. Benny Hinn,

  1406. Creflo Dollar,

  1407. !

  1408. The list can

  1409. go on and

  1410. on and

  1411. on.

  1412. Beware of

  1413. these people.

  1414. As I said

  1415. to you though,

  1416. we tend to

  1417. put them

  1418. categorically

  1419. off in one

  1420. place.

  1421. It's not

  1422. just them.

  1423. There are

  1424. many others

  1425. who do

  1426. this as

  1427. well that

  1428. just don't

  1429. have the

  1430. name or

  1431. the scope

  1432. that they

  1433. have.

  1434. So beware of

  1435. the scribes,

  1436. the false

  1437. teachers.

  1438. Beware of

  1439. people who

  1440. take advantage

  1441. of the less

  1442. advantaged.

  1443. Who don't

  1444. serve,

  1445. but are

  1446. served.

  1447. And so

  1448. this is the

  1449. nature of

  1450. their hypocrisy.

  1451. We've got a

  1452. strong warning

  1453. against people

  1454. like this.

  1455. And then we

  1456. see in

  1457. verse 40

  1458. their final

  1459. condemnation.

  1460. The text

  1461. says they

  1462. will receive

  1463. the greater

  1464. condemnation.

  1465. 2 Corinthians

  1466. 11.15

  1467. says their

  1468. end will

  1469. correspond to

  1470. their deeds.

  1471. And as I

  1472. read to you

  1473. 2 Peter 2.1

  1474. I'll read it

  1475. to you again.

  1476. But false

  1477. prophets also

  1478. arose among

  1479. the people,

  1480. just as there

  1481. will be false

  1482. teachers among

  1483. you, who

  1484. will secretly

  1485. bring in

  1486. destructive

  1487. heresies, even

  1488. denying the

  1489. master who

  1490. bought them,

  1491. bringing upon

  1492. themselves swift

  1493. destruction.

  1494. And there's a

  1495. great deal of

  1496. encouragement in

  1497. that, and seeing

  1498. that there is in

  1499. fact a

  1500. condemnation for

  1501. these men,

  1502. because even

  1503. as we are to

  1504. beware them,

  1505. and I will

  1506. show you some

  1507. other places

  1508. that we are

  1509. actually supposed

  1510. to battle

  1511. against them,

  1512. that one day,

  1513. fully and

  1514. finally, God

  1515. will be

  1516. vindicated.

  1517. In fact,

  1518. Peter says

  1519. that their

  1520. destruction will

  1521. be swift.

  1522. Not in our

  1523. terms, certainly.

  1524. There are many

  1525. men, I would

  1526. gladly see their

  1527. destruction come

  1528. now, that they

  1529. would quit leading

  1530. so many people

  1531. astray, but their

  1532. destruction will

  1533. in fact be

  1534. swift.

  1535. Things will be

  1536. made right in

  1537. that day.

  1538. And this is the

  1539. final place for

  1540. these men, damned

  1541. for eternity,

  1542. because they used

  1543. the name in our

  1544. day of Jesus

  1545. Christ to

  1546. perpetuate their

  1547. own kingdoms.

  1548. Now, verse

  1549. 41 through

  1550. 44.

  1551. So Jesus

  1552. goes out, he

  1553. sits out opposite

  1554. the treasury,

  1555. and he watched

  1556. the people putting

  1557. money into the

  1558. offering box.

  1559. Many rich people

  1560. put in large

  1561. sums, and a

  1562. poor widow came

  1563. and put in two

  1564. small copper coins

  1565. which make a

  1566. penny.

  1567. And he called

  1568. to his disciples

  1569. to him and

  1570. said to them,

  1571. truly I say to

  1572. you, this poor

  1573. widow has put in

  1574. more than all

  1575. those who are

  1576. contributing to

  1577. the offering box,

  1578. for they all

  1579. contributed out

  1580. of their abundance,

  1581. but she, out of

  1582. her poverty, has

  1583. put in everything

  1584. she had, all she

  1585. had to live on.

  1586. She puts in

  1587. there what is the

  1588. equivalent of a

  1589. one-sixty-fourth of

  1590. a denarius, which

  1591. a denarius was a

  1592. day's wage.

  1593. To give you an

  1594. idea of how little

  1595. money this was,

  1596. one-sixty-fourth of

  1597. a denarius, and

1598. this seems to be all

  1599. that she has left

  1600. in the world.

  1601. These coins that

  1602. she puts in are

  1603. the two of the

  1604. smallest coins used

  1605. by Jews.

  1606. insignificant from

  1607. everybody else's

  1608. perspective.

  1609. Now, how does the

  1610. one connect to the

  1611. other?

  1612. You've probably heard

  1613. this preached.

  1614. I believe I've used

  1615. it as an example

  1616. of sacrificial

  1617. giving, of the

  1618. faith that it

  1619. takes to give,

  1620. of seeking first

  1621. the kingdom of

  1622. God and all of

  1623. our needs will be

  1624. added to us, but

  1625. that is not at

  1626. all what this

  1627. text is about.

  1628. It's not even

  1629. kind of.

  1630. what it's about.

  1631. In fact, we tend

  1632. to want to run

  1633. to juxtapose the

  1634. rich against her,

  1635. but Jesus never

  1636. condemns the rich

  1637. here.

  1638. In fact, he says

  1639. that they give

  1640. well.

  1641. They're giving a

  1642. lot out of their

  1643. abundance.

  1644. It's not the

  1645. point at all.

  1646. What he's doing

  1647. is he's pointing

  1648. to the fact that

  1649. she is a victim

  1650. of this system.

  1651. She is a victim

  1652. of the scribes,

  1653. believing that

  1654. she must come

  1655. and buy God's

  1656. blessing.

  1657. She has given

  1658. every single

  1659. bit that she

  1660. has.

  1661. She's given it

  1662. all away.

  1663. She now no

  1664. longer has any

  1665. money to support

  1666. herself because

  1667. she's given it

  1668. now to the

  1669. temple worship,

  1670. to the apostate

  1671. temple worship.

  1672. Jesus here is not

  1673. supporting giving

  1674. good offerings in

  1675. our churches,

  1676. although you should.

  1677. That's not what

  1678. he's doing in

  1679. this case.

  1680. Every sermon

  1681. you've heard preached

  1682. out of this likely

  1683. had the right

  1684. point made,

  1685. but taught

  1686. someplace else

  1687. in Scripture.

  1688. Jesus is simply

  1689. finding a physical

  1690. example in the

  1691. temple court of

  1692. the very thing

  1693. he's been saying.

  1694. He's saying,

  1695. see, beware the

  1696. scribes.

  1697. Look, case in

  1698. point, they devour

  1699. widows' houses.

  1700. Luke 16, 14,

  1701. Jesus says that

  1702. the Pharisees are

  1703. lovers of money.

  1704. They have failed

  1705. to love the

  1706. people.

  1707. They have failed

  1708. to lead the

  1709. people in the

  1710. truth, but

  1711. rather they

  1712. seek what

  1713. they can gain

  1714. from them,

  1715. not what they

  1716. can give to

  1717. them.

  1718. And this is

  1719. the case

  1720. with the

  1721. widow's

  1722. offering.

  1723. Now I hope

  1724. that by her

  1725. faith God

  1726. was good to

  1727. her in this,

  1728. but this act

  1729. is not what

  1730. bought her

  1731. God's favor.

  1732. She's a victim

  1733. of this very

  1734. thing.

  1735. What is the

  1736. application for

  1737. us today?

  1738. Rightly so,

  1739. we've said it.

  1740. Beware.

  1741. Beware of the

  1742. false teachers.

  1743. This warning is

  1744. explicit here in

  1745. our text today.

  1746. Avoid the

  1747. teachings of

  1748. these people.

  1749. Let me say to

  1750. you, the call

  1751. here is not to

  1752. avoid these

  1753. people altogether,

  1754. to ignore them,

  1755. but rather to

  1756. avoid their

  1757. teachings.

  1758. Be very,

  1759. very careful

  1760. what people

  1761. like this

  1762. perpetuate with

  1763. their mouths.

  1764. Watch what

  1765. they say.

  1766. Be careful of

  1767. their example.

  1768. Beware.

  1769. In fact,

  1770. Jesus gives an

  1771. example of

  1772. not just

  1773. avoidance,

  1774. right, but

  1775. he is

  1776. constantly

  1777. engaging with

  1778. these people.

  1779. We've seen

  1780. that quite

  1781. extensively here

  1782. in chapter

  1783. 12.

  1784. He stands

  1785. firm and

  1786. he contends

  1787. for the

  1788. truth.

  1789. Turn with

  1790. me, if you

  1791. will, in

  1792. closing to

  1793. Jude, the

  1794. book of

  1795. Jude.

  1796. Right

  1797. towards the

  1798. end of

  1799. your New

  1800. Testament.

  1801. Jude has

  1802. no chapters

  1803. or one

  1804. chapter,

  1805. whichever

  1806. you prefer

  1807. to say.

  1808. Jude is

  1809. James'

  1810. brother.

  1811. Verse 3

  1812. and 4,

  1813. he writes,

  1814. Beloved,

  1815. although I

  1816. was very

  1817. eager to

  1818. write to

  1819. you about

  1820. our common

  1821. salvation,

  1822. I found

  1823. it necessary

  1824. to write

  1825. appealing to

  1826. you to

  1827. contend for

  1828. the faith

  1829. that was

  1830. once for

  1831. all delivered

  1832. to the

  1833. saints.

  1834. For certain

  1835. people have

  1836. crept in

  1837. unnoticed

  1838. who long

  1839. ago were

  1840. designated

  1841. for this

  1842. condemnation,

  1843. ungodly

  1844. people who

  1845. pervert the

  1846. grace of

  1847. our God

  1848. into

  1849. sensuality

  1850. and deny

  1851. our only

  1852. Master

  1853. and Lord,

  1854. Jesus

  1855. Christ.

  1856. So his

  1857. very longing

  1858. is that he

  1859. can talk

  1860. about what

  1861. he's for.

  1862. I really

  1863. wanted to

  1864. write to

  1865. you is what

  1866. he's saying.

  1867. It was my

  1868. eager desire

  1869. to write to

  1870. you about

  1871. our common

  1872. salvation.

  1873. I just

  1874. wanted to

  1875. write to

  1876. you and

  1877. talk about

  1878. the goodness

  1879. of the

  1880. gospel of

  1881. Jesus

  1882. Christ.

  1883. However,

  1884. it's

  1885. necessitated.

  1886. There's an

  1887. importance,

  1888. an emphasis

  1889. placed upon

  1890. me because

  1891. people are

  1892. coming in

  1893. and they're

  1894. leading you

  1895. astray.

  1896. Therefore,

  1897. I've come

  1898. to set

  1899. you straight.

  1900. This letter

  1901. is aimed

  1902. at that

  1903. very

  1904. thing.

  1905. Contend

  1906. for the

  1907. faith.

  1908. Beware of

  1909. the false

  1910. teachers,

  1911. but contend

  1912. for the

  1913. faith.

  1914. And how

  1915. do we

  1916. do that?

  1917. Number

  1918. one,

  1919. by searching

  1920. the scriptures

  1921. for ourselves.

  1922. Search the

  1923. scriptures for

  1924. yourself.

  1925. In Acts

  1926. 17,

  1927. 11-12,

  1928. we see a

  1929. little story

  1930. of Paul and

  1931. Silas being

  1932. in Berea.

  1933. Many of you

  1934. are familiar

  1935. with the

  1936. Bereans.

  1937. A little

  1938. mention of

  1939. them.

  1940. Verse 11,

  1941. Now these

  1942. Jews,

  1943. being the

  1944. Bereans,

  1945. were more

  1946. noble than

  1947. those in

  1948. Thessalonica.

  1949. They received

  1950. the word

  1951. with all

  1952. eagerness,

  1953. examining the

  1954. scriptures daily

  1955. to see if

  1956. these things

  1957. were so.

  1958. They're talking

  1959. about the

  1960. gospel proclamation

  1961. there.

  1962. And therefore,

  1963. verse 12,

  1964. many of them

  1965. therefore believed.

  1966. They carefully

  1967. scrutinized.

  1968. They studied it

  1969. for themselves

  1970. to see if

  1971. what the

  1972. apostles were

  1973. saying concerning

  1974. the scriptures

  1975. was true.

  1976. How will

  1977. you be able

  1978. to identify

  1979. a false

  1980. teacher if

  1981. you don't

  1982. know the

  1983. teaching itself?

  1984. And beloved,

  1985. this is not

  1986. a laborsome

  1987. task.

  1988. This is an

  1989. incredible book

  1990. and it is so

  1991. varied in its

  1992. themes,

  1993. in its

  1994. stylistic

  1995. expertise.

  1996. It's a

  1997. beautifully

  1998. written book.

  1999. It is not

  2000. that hard

  2001. to know

  2002. your scriptures.

  2003. I shared

  2004. with you a

  2005. number of

  2006. weeks ago

  2007. that the

  2008. average college

  2009. student,

  2010. and I know

  2011. none of you

  2012. are this

  2013. kind of

  2014. average,

  2015. but spends

  2016. 106

  2017. minutes per

  2018. day on

  2019. social media.

  2020. So if you

  2021. just took,

  2022. I'm not saying

  2023. social media is

  2024. all bad,

  2025. right?

  2026. It's okay to

  2027. spend some

  2028. time on

  2029. social media,

  2030. but let's

  2031. just say

  2032. theoretically

  2033. that you

  2034. did that

  2035. twice in

  2036. a week,

  2037. and the

  2038. rest of

  2039. the week

  2040. you devoted

  2041. that time,

  2042. that 106

  2043. minutes,

  2044. across,

  2045. let's give

  2046. you a couple

  2047. weeks off,

  2048. let's say

  2049. 50 weeks

  2050. of the year.

  2051. Do you know

  2052. how many times

  2053. you could read

  2054. the scriptures

  2055. that time

  2056. through?

  2057. Average reading

  2058. speed of 250

  2059. words per

  2060. minute,

  2061. eight and a

  2062. half times.

  2063. Eight and a

  2064. half times.

  2065. We piddle

  2066. away time

  2067. on unimportant,

  2068. unnecessary

  2069. things,

  2070. and we neglect

  2071. to know our

  2072. scriptures.

  2073. How are we

  2074. to contend

  2075. for the

  2076. faith if we

  2077. do not

  2078. know our

  2079. faith?

  2080. We get

  2081. that we

  2082. have a

  2083. belief,

  2084. but what

  2085. does it

  2086. mean?

  2087. And what

  2088. are all

  2089. of its

  2090. intricacies

  2091. and complexity?

  2092. Get after

  2093. searching the

  2094. scriptures

  2095. for yourself.

  2096. And then

  2097. turn,

  2098. I shouldn't

  2099. say turn,

  2100. you're probably

  2101. on the same

  2102. page,

  2103. Jude 17-23,

  2104. and I'll

  2105. give you

  2106. two more

  2107. points.

  2108. So contend

  2109. for the

  2110. faith by

  2111. number one,

  2112. searching the

  2113. scriptures

  2114. for yourself,

  2115. and let's

  2116. read beginning

  2117. of verse 17.

  2118. But you

  2119. must remember,

  2120. beloved,

  2121. the predictions

  2122. of the

  2123. apostles of

  2124. our Lord

  2125. Jesus Christ.

  2126. They said

  2127. to you,

  2128. in the last

  2129. time there

  2130. will be

  2131. scoffers

  2132. following

  2133. their own

  2134. ungodly

  2135. passions.

  2136. It is

  2137. these who

  2138. cause

  2139. divisions,

  2140. worldly

  2141. people,

  2142. devoid of

  2143. the

  2144. spirit.

  2145. But you,

  2146. beloved,

  2147. building

  2148. yourselves up

  2149. in your

  2150. most holy

  2151. faith,

  2152. studying the

  2153. scriptures,

  2154. and praying

  2155. in the

  2156. Holy Spirit,

  2157. keep yourselves

  2158. in the

  2159. love of

  2160. God,

  2161. waiting for

  2162. the mercy

  2163. of our

  2164. Lord Jesus

  2165. Christ that

  2166. leads to

  2167. eternal

  2168. life.

  2169. And have

  2170. mercy on

  2171. those who

  2172. doubt,

  2173. save others

  2174. by snatching

  2175. them out

  2176. of the

  2177. fire,

  2178. to others

  2179. show mercy

  2180. with fear,

  2181. hating even

  2182. the garment

  2183. stained by

  2184. the flesh.

  2185. So firstly,

  2186. search the

  2187. scriptures for

  2188. yourself.

  2189. We even

  2190. see that

  2191. as in

  2192. verse 20,

  2193. Jude writes,

  2194. building yourselves

  2195. up in your

  2196. most holy

  2197. faith.

  2198. Secondly,

  2199. pray.

  2200. It is by

  2201. the grace

  2202. of God,

  2203. given to us

  2204. by his

  2205. Holy Spirit,

  2206. that we are

  2207. maintained in

  2208. the truth.

  2209. That I have

  2210. understood

  2211. anything true

  2212. in this world

  2213. is a great

  2214. gift of

  2215. God.

  2216. My mind

  2217. and my heart

  2218. will be just

  2219. as darkened

  2220. as these

  2221. scribes if it

  2222. weren't for

  2223. the Lord.

  2224. So pray.

  2225. Pray that we

  2226. would have

  2227. right understanding.

  2228. Pray that we

  2229. would be able

  2230. to open up

  2231. the scriptures

  2232. and have our

  2233. minds illuminated

  2234. by the Spirit.

  2235. This is a

  2236. possible thing.

  2237. It's a promised

  2238. thing given

  2239. to us as

  2240. Christians.

  2241. Pray.

  2242. We are

  2243. dependent on

  2244. God to

  2245. rightly maintain

  2246. the truth.

  2247. Let me add

  2248. to that as

  2249. a step outside

  2250. of Jude's

  2251. exhortation,

  2252. but let's

  2253. also pray for

  2254. these false

  2255. teachers.

  2256. That God

  2257. would do the

  2258. same for

  2259. them.

  2260. That all of

  2261. those under

  2262. their influence

  2263. would be

  2264. rightly

  2265. turned.

  2266. Now likely

  2267. their churches,

  2268. their following

  2269. would die

  2270. away.

  2271. However,

  2272. maybe some.

  2273. Maybe some

  2274. would be

  2275. converted.

  2276. Maybe some

  2277. would follow

  2278. in the way

  2279. of God.

  2280. What a

  2281. wonderful thing

  2282. it would be

  2283. if Joel Osteen

  2284. one Sunday

  2285. got up and

  2286. repented of

  2287. everything that

  2288. he's been

  2289. teaching and

  2290. rightly taught

  2291. the gospel.

  2292. Let's pray

  2293. for these

  2294. people.

  2295. And thirdly,

  2296. teach the

  2297. truth.

  2298. Verse 22

  2299. and 23.

  2300. People are

  2301. going to

  2302. doubt.

  2303. People are

  2304. not going

  2305. to understand

  2306. the truth.

  2307. They're

  2308. going to be

  2309. following some

  2310. of these

  2311. teachers.

  2312. We must

  2313. teach the

  2314. truth.

  2315. You have

  2316. it.

  2317. You have

  2318. the truth.

  2319. Teach the

  2320. truth.

  2321. Find every

  2322. opportunity to

  2323. lead people

  2324. rightly, to

  2325. lead them

  2326. away from

  2327. those that

  2328. will lead

  2329. them astray

  2330. and lead

  2331. them in

  2332. the way

  2333. of God.

  2334. Now likely

  2335. very few of

  2336. us will

  2337. have chance

  2338. to encounter

  2339. the large

  2340. false prophets

  2341. of this

  2342. world.

  2343. Certainly

  2344. given the

  2345. opportunity,

  2346. teach them

  2347. as well.

  2348. If I'm

  2349. ever given

  2350. the chance,

  2351. I certainly

  2352. would be

  2353. glad to.

  2354. I will be

  2355. content with

  2356. teaching you

  2357. and teaching

  2358. those around

  2359. me at

  2360. this point.

  2361. So search

  2362. the scriptures

  2363. for yourself.

  2364. Pray that

  2365. God would

  2366. illuminate your

  2367. mind to

  2368. understand and

  2369. to keep

  2370. you, hold

  2371. you fast

  2372. to the

  2373. truth, and

  2374. then turn

  2375. and teach

  2376. that truth.

  2377. Now as we

  2378. are on the

  2379. Sunday before

  2380. Thanksgiving,

  2381. aren't you

  2382. thankful today

  2383. that we're

  2384. not counted

  2385. amongst the

  2386. scribes and

  2387. the false

  2388. teachers?

  2389. I am.

  2390. It is a

  2391. great wait to

  2392. get up each

  2393. week and to

  2394. teach the

  2395. word of God.

  2396. It is the

  2397. struggle of my

  2398. week to

  2399. rightly understand

  2400. it so that I

  2401. don't err, so

  2402. that I don't

  2403. lead you astray

  2404. in any measure.

  2405. It is a

  2406. blessing to be

  2407. found in

  2408. the truth.

  2409. And I don't

  2410. know all of

  2411. your different

  2412. spheres and

  2413. all the

  2414. things that

  2415. you're being

  2416. taken off to

  2417. into this

  2418. week.

  2419. I know many

  2420. people have

  2421. difficult family

  2422. situations,

  2423. unbelieving

  2424. parents, maybe

  2425. the believing

  2426. parents that

  2427. just seem to

  2428. not quite get

  2429. it are the

  2430. most challenging

  2431. of all.

  2432. Go and

  2433. contend for

  2434. the faith

  2435. this week.

  2436. Rejoice in

  2437. the good news

  2438. of the gospel

  2439. of Jesus

  2440. Christ and

  2441. share that

  2442. with those

  2443. around you.

  2444. Let's pray

  2445. together.
