  1. Turn to the gospel according to Mark chapter 13.

    Mark 13 chapter mention

  2. I have enjoyed the way we've restructured the service and done the offering right before the sermon with the music, but

  3. I'm going to read to you verses 1-13.

  4. And as he came out of the temple, one of his disciples said to him,

  5. Look, teacher, what wonderful stones and what wonderful buildings.

  6. And Jesus said to him, Do you see these great buildings?

  7. There will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down.

  8. And as he sat on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter and James and John and Andrew asked him privately,

  9. Tell us, when will these things be and what will be the sign when all these things are about to be accomplished?

  10. And Jesus began to say to them, See that no one leads you astray.

  11. Many will come in my name saying, I am he, and they will lead many astray.

  12. And when you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed.

  13. This must take place, but the end is not yet.

  14. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.

  15. There will be earthquakes in various places.

  16. There will be famines.

  17. These are but the beginnings of the birth pains.

  18. But be on your guard, for they will deliver you over to councils, and you will be beaten in the synagogues,

  19. and you will take stand before governors and kings for my sake to bear witness before them.

  20. And the gospel must first be proclaimed to all nations.

  21. And when they bring you to trial and deliver you over, do not be anxious beforehand what you are to say,

  22. but say whatever is given you in that hour.

  23. For it is not you who speak, but the Holy Spirit.

  24. And brother will deliver brother over to death, and the father his child,

  25. and children will rise against parents and have them put to death.

  26. And you will be hated by all for my name's sake.

  27. But the one who endures to the end will be saved.

  28. This is God's word to us.

  29. It was written for his glory and our good.

  30. We would all do well to listen to it in order to believe its promises and obey its commands.

  31. Let's pray together.

  32. Father God, we need you in this hour.

  33. And we would ask your favor on the preaching of your word today.

  34. It was written by you under the inspiration of the Spirit.

  35. Here, carried along by the pen of Mark.

  36. It was written for us.

  37. That we might know you and know how to better honor and glorify you with our lives.

  38. Exalt Jesus in our hearts and minds today so that he will be exalted in our living this week.

  39. We're dependent on you to accomplish this.

  40. And so we pray this in the name of Christ.

  41. Amen.

  42. Well, we find ourselves still in Wednesday of the Passion Week.

  43. You remember at the beginning of chapter 11, Jesus has entered into Jerusalem.

  44. It's called the Triumphal Entry.

  45. That evening he goes and he visits the temple and he can see that there's been this money-changing activity happening in the temple.

  46. He goes back out of Jerusalem to Bethel, comes back in on Tuesday,

  47. and for the second time in his ministry, goes and flips over tables and runs out money changers,

  48. stops it being used as a thoroughfare, a cut-through for the city,

  49. essentially shuts down all of this apostate swindling that's going on in this day.

  50. And he's immediately then challenged as he sets up camp on Wednesday in the temple by the religious elite of the day.

  51. And we've kind of seen these waves of aggression come at him,

  52. and he quickly shuts them down as they seek to trap him in such a way that he will be killed.

  53. He's not done yet, though.

  54. He still has some time and some things that he wants to teach,

  55. and so he waylays that, and we see him finally now stepping outside, still on Wednesday,

  56. but leaving the temple court, presumably through the east gate,

  57. down a steep path that crossed through the Kidron Valley,

  58. which is where all of the sacrificial blood flowed,

  59. which we'll get to learn more about in a month or so,

  60. to the Mount of Olives, where they observe what's going on from afar.

  61. And we see in this a question asked by an unidentified disciple.

  62. And I can't say for sure, but I want to imagine that it was Mark's kindness that spared

  63. naming the individual who asked the question,

  64. because he's apparently missed the point of Jesus' teaching that week,

  65. all about the spiritual bankruptcy of the system that existed there,

  66. and all that it included as they look back on this building,

  67. which was a rather magnificent building.

  68. It was a building that all of us would have been in awe at.

  69. But he hadn't seen that what Jesus was saying was that this was not where the worship of God take place.

  70. This was not the way in which God was meant to be worshipped.

  71. And so the question we see asked,

  72. look, teacher, what wonderful stones and what wonderful buildings,

  73. this admiration of this.

  74. And it was certainly that.

  75. The Jewish historian Josephus tells us a bit about it in the Wars of the Jews.

  76. We read,

  77. Now the outward face of the temple in its front

  78. wanted nothing that was likely to surprise either men's minds or their eyes,

  79. for it was covered all over with plates of gold of great weight.

  80. And at the first rising of the sun reflected back a very fiery splendor

  81. and made those who forced themselves to look upon it to turn their eyes away

  82. just as they would have done at the sun's own rays.

  83. But this temple appeared to strangers when they were coming to it at a distance

  84. like a mountain covered with snow.

  85. For as to those parts of it that were not gilt or covered in gold,

  86. they were exceeding white.

  87. White rare stone.

  88. It made it look like a mountain of snow as you approached Jerusalem.

  89. This magnificent building.

  90. Jesus gives to us this direct prophecy that it will in fact be torn down.

  91. And he's not just simply referring to the building itself,

  92. although we're going to talk about that in a moment.

  93. But more than that,

  94. the system that the building represents would soon be destroyed.

  95. The building itself was destroyed in 70 A.D.

  96. Jesus says there will not be left here one stone upon another

  97. that will not be thrown down.

  98. There was a revolt that started a movement called the Zealot Movement in A.D. 66,

  99. which eventually led to Rome finally and fully sacking Jerusalem

  100. and destroying almost to the complete rubble,

  101. almost the entire city of Jerusalem.

  102. They saved a bit of the wall to show people how mighty the wall once was

  103. where the garrisons would camp,

  104. but the rest of it was torn down

  105. to the degree that they took the foundation stones of the wall

  106. and flipped them over just to show their power over this.

  107. You remember back in Mark 12, verses 13-17,

    Mark 12:13–17

  108. there's this question asked by the Pharisees and Herodians about the tax.

  109. And should we pay this particular tax they're referring to known as the poll tax?

  110. And this was a tax that was instituted

  111. when Joseph and Mary traveled with baby Jesus in the belly

  112. to Bethlehem where he was born.

  113. They were being counted.

  114. And this is the way in which Rome said,

  115. not only is your land ours,

  116. but the people themselves belong to us.

  117. So this tax was a head tax paid as a citizen of Rome.

  118. And it was that that led to this revolt

  119. that eventually saw the temple destroyed.

  120. Again, Josephus in the Wars of the Jews,

  121. Now as soon as the army, the Roman army,

  122. had no more people to slay or to plunder

  123. because there remained none to be the objects of their fury,

  124. for they would not have spared any

  125. had there remained any other such work to be done,

  126. Caesar gave orders that they should now demolish

  127. the entire city and temple.

  128. And so it was brought down,

  129. just as Jesus said that it would be,

  130. not too many years later.

  131. And they go from this place as they're traveling

  132. and they go and sit down on the Mount of Olives,

  133. presumably looking at the temple opposite of it.

  134. And Peter and James and John and Andrew

  135. get into the side and they say,

  136. tell us when will these things be?

  137. And what will be the sign when all these things

  138. are about to be accomplished?

  139. Now there is some debate concerning this text

  140. about what it means for this

  141. to have been fulfilled and accomplished.

  142. Certainly, we know that the temple itself

  143. was destroyed in A.D. 70.

  144. And there are some people that say

  145. that the entirety of this passage is fulfilled.

  146. For example, verse 10,

  147. and the gospel must first be proclaimed to all nations.

  148. That that was in fact fulfilled,

  149. which is why the temple was then destroyed.

  150. And they base this argument off of passages

  151. like Colossians 1.23.

  152. Well, Paul writes,

  153. if indeed you continue in the faith,

  154. stable and steadfast,

  155. not shifting from the hope of the gospel

  156. that you have heard,

  157. which has been proclaimed in all creation under heaven,

  158. and of which I, Paul, became a minister.

  159. So they would say, see, look here,

  160. Paul says that the gospel was in fact

  161. proclaimed amongst the nations,

  162. and this is why we can now then presume

  163. that that's been fulfilled,

  164. and now the temple has been destroyed.

  165. But you get into some Greek issues

  166. with Colossians 1.23

  167. if you don't study it carefully.

  168. This phrase which has been proclaimed,

  169. the word proclaimed there is in the aorist tense,

  170. which denotes no specific time whatsoever,

  171. meaning that Paul is not saying

  172. that it is a completed action done in the past,

  173. but he's defining the gospel and its scope,

  174. and that is that it is global in scope.

  175. So it would be improper to look at Colossians 1.23

  176. and go back then to Mark 13.10

  177. and say, oh, and the gospel has then been preached

  178. to all nations.

  179. We're going to say a bit more about that

  180. towards the end of the sermon.

  181. We'll come back to verse 10,

  182. but I want us at this point to see

  183. that this is not what Jesus is trying

  184. to communicate to them,

  185. simply summing up for them

  186. the things that will happen

  187. before the temple is destroyed.

  188. However, it is the question

  189. that the disciples are asking.

  190. They're saying, tell us all the things

  191. that are going to happen

  192. before the temple is destroyed.

  193. They still were so hungry to know

  194. the practical, the tangible things

  195. that could be known about the kingdom of God.

  196. They still seem to not understand

  197. that the kingdom of God primarily

  198. was going to come and bear in their hearts.

  199. This is the way in which God

  200. meant to establish His people,

  201. spirit and truth, a heart worship.

  202. And so I believe He's correcting

  203. their misconception as He goes on

  204. to tell them the things

  205. that are going to come to pass,

  206. including for us, verse 10,

  207. that all of this, the gospel

  208. must be proclaimed to all nations,

  209. putting a timeline, a way out there,

  210. a far-reaching timeline for them.

  211. Their question itself drew my mind

  212. back to Mark 8, verses 11 and 12,

    Mark 8:11

  213. where the Pharisees seek a sign.

  214. And He says to them that a sign

  215. will not be given to this generation.

  216. They wanted to know the tangible.

  217. They wanted to be able to measure it.

  218. They wanted to be able to mark it out

  219. and know when the kingdom of God

  220. would fully arrive.

  221. It's not the way we walk.

  222. We walk by faith.

  223. So Jesus then begins to give them

  224. this prophetic information.

  225. And I think we can really quickly,

  226. in a chapter like chapter 13,

  227. get incredibly distracted

  228. into end-time theology,

  229. really trying to work out all the details

  230. and miss the point altogether.

  231. So we're going to deal with it in brief.

  232. There's a time and a place for it,

  233. and now is not the time,

  234. here is not the place,

  235. this morning.

  236. But we can't neglect it altogether.

  237. We need to look at kind of the driving force

  238. of what He's trying to say to them.

  239. And so in 5 through 9,

  240. He starts out by saying,

  241. see that no one leads you astray,

  242. and that many will come in His name,

  243. claiming to be Him,

  244. and they will lead many astray.

  245. So it's a warning.

  246. Once again,

  247. as we saw back in verse 38 of chapter 12,

  248. a warning against false teachers,

  249. particularly ones that are going to claim

  250. to be the Christ themselves,

  251. but we can certainly broaden it beyond that as well.

  252. Those who are going to take advantage

  253. of the way in which the world is functioning,

  254. the wars and the earthquakes,

  255. all these calamities that we see,

  256. to gather to themselves followers.

  257. People like Margaret Rowan,

  258. the prophetess, quote-unquote,

  259. of the Seventh-day Adventists,

  260. who said the world would come to end in 1925.

  261. Jehovah's Witnesses,

  262. which have been writing and writing

  263. and writing and writing.

  264. 1975 was the big year for them.

  265. Not sure what they say now.

  266. Or guys like Pat Robertson,

  267. the chairman of the Christian Broadcasting Network,

  268. a station you should block on your TV,

  269. who first said that the world would come to end in 1982,

  270. and now, 2007,

  271. haven't heard a new proclamation.

  272. I tried to find to see if Pat Robertson's telling us

  273. when the world will end now.

  274. This is a dangerous thing.

  275. It's not for us to know.

  276. The Scriptures even teach us that.

  277. And yet, many men will claim

  278. that they know when the world will end

  279. and lead people astray.

  280. We should know that it is going to end,

  281. and we should see that the signs are here,

  282. that it is coming to an end.

  283. But that doesn't change what we do

  284. and how we live.

  285. We should always live in light of that reality.

  286. Observing the effects of sin on the world.

  287. Look at the things that he says.

  288. Wars.

  289. Rumors of wars.

  290. We live in a day like this, do we not?

  291. Nation rising against nation.

  292. Kingdom against kingdom.

  293. Earthquakes.

  294. Famines.

  295. He says, but these are the beginnings

  296. of the birth pains.

  297. Paul uses a very similar language

  298. in Romans 8.

  299. Verse 19-22, he writes,

  300. For the creation waits with eager longing

  301. for the revealing of what?

  302. The sons of God.

  303. For the creation was subjected to fertility,

  304. not willingly,

  305. but because of him who subjected it

  306. in hope that the creation itself

  307. will be set free from its bondage

  308. to corruption and obtain the freedom

  309. of the glory of the children of God.

  310. For we know that the whole creation

  311. has been groaning together

  312. in the pains of childbirth until now.

  313. And that is that the world itself

  314. is longing for the day when Christ

  315. will come and restore all things.

  316. And Jesus here is saying,

  317. and Paul is later saying,

  318. that the things we are seeing

  319. is the beginning of that process.

  320. Now I have a four-year-old

  321. and a two-year-old,

  322. and so I have, as a faithful husband,

  323. walked beside a labor.

  324. I have not been in labor, praise God.

  325. Nothing I will ever experience.

  326. I can't possibly imagine

  327. exactly what it feels like.

  328. I will not be one of those fools

  329. who puts the electricity

  330. on their stomachs.

  331. Have you seen those guys

  332. that experience the pain of labor?

  333. No thank you.

  334. But certainly in Sam's labor,

  335. they increased in intensity.

  336. It started off at one level of pain,

  337. a talking, even happy time kind of a pain,

  338. to a, if you crack another joke,

  339. I will kill you kind of a pain.

  340. When Sam goes quiet and she's hurting,

  341. leave her alone.

  342. Just leave her alone.

  343. But all of this led up to,

  344. all of the suffering

  345. that my wife experienced,

  346. all led up to a final,

  347. great deal of joy.

  348. I couldn't believe it.

  349. On the day that she had caged,

  350. she said,

  351. I want to have another one.

  352. I went, are you kidding me?

  353. Did you just,

  354. do you have any idea

  355. what you just went through?

  356. But joy filled her heart so much.

  357. And this is the way in which

  358. the creation is groaning

  359. and longing for the returning

  360. of Christ.

  361. For the church to be completed

  362. one day.

  363. For the new heaven

  364. and the new earth

  365. to be established.

  366. And this is what's happening in that.

  367. There will be pain

  368. before this great,

  369. great deal of joy.

  370. And he doesn't simply limit it

  371. to the apostles.

  372. This is expanded to us as well.

  373. The apostles are going to be part of it

  374. in their suffering

  375. for the kingdom.

  376. They're going to be delivered.

  377. They're supposed to be on their guard.

  378. Delivered to councils.

  379. Beaten in synagogues.

  380. Standing before governors and kings.

  381. Verse 12.

  382. Brother will deliver brother over to death

  383. and the father is child.

  384. And children will rise up against parents

  385. and have them put to death.

  386. And you will be hated by all.

  387. For my name's sake.

  388. Look at the breadth of this pain

  389. that will be experienced.

  390. That it's going to go down

  391. into the family unit.

  392. Many of you experience this kind of tension

  393. in your families

  394. as those who claim the name of Christ.

  395. Trying to be around them at mealtimes

  396. and do things

  397. and hear the conversations.

  398. And see that they don't exalt Him

  399. in their words

  400. or in their living at all.

  401. Jesus says here it will get

  402. much more severe than that.

  403. That children will deliver parents

  404. and parents' children

  405. to death.

  406. We will take place in this suffering.

  407. It's recorded in John 15.

  408. Verse 18 and 19.

  409. Jesus says,

  410. If the world hates you,

  411. know that it has hated Me

  412. before it hated you.

  413. If you were of the world,

  414. the world would love you

  415. as its own.

  416. But because you are not of the world,

  417. because I chose you out of the world,

  418. therefore,

  419. the world hates you.

  420. Jesus Christ,

  421. our Lord,

  422. who came to be a servant of all,

  423. has already told us now

  424. in the Gospel of Mark

  425. three times,

  426. He said to the apostles,

  427. this is what's going to happen

  428. when I go to Jerusalem.

  429. I'm going to be delivered up,

  430. I'm going to be killed,

  431. and then I'm going to rise again.

  432. This is the way in which

  433. I'm coming to ransom many

  434. for myself.

  435. And somehow,

  436. we think we're better than Him.

  437. That we ourselves

  438. won't suffer in the same way.

  439. That it won't be given to us

  440. as the same kind of task.

  441. Paul writes to Timothy

  442. in 2 Timothy 3.12,

  443. Indeed,

  444. all who desire to live a godly life

  445. in Christ Jesus

  446. will be persecuted.

  447. It's a reality,

  448. a necessity of Christian living.

  449. Not that we ask for it

  450. or that we invite it upon ourselves,

  451. but He's telling us

  452. that it will happen.

  453. Those of us who are disciples

  454. of Jesus Christ,

  455. those of us who laid down our lives

  456. to pursue Him

  457. with all that we have,

  458. are going to experience suffering

  459. in this world.

  460. But we don't have to be

  461. concerned about this.

  462. We have a hope.

  463. A lasting hope.

  464. An eternal hope.

  465. A hope that helps us

  466. drive through momentary affliction.

  467. And we have a helper.

  468. In verse 11,

  469. When they bring you to trial

  470. and deliver you over,

  471. do be anxious beforehand

  472. what you are to say.

  473. But say,

  474. whatever is giving you that effort

  475. is not you who speak,

  476. but the Holy Spirit.

  477. Jesus said,

  478. promise this to them.

  479. And it comes in Acts 1,

    Acts 1:7

  480. verses 7 and 8.

  481. He said to them,

  482. It is not for you to know

  483. times or seasons.

  484. Isn't this a fitting verse?

  485. It is not for you to know

  486. times or seasons

  487. that the Father is fixed

  488. by His own authority.

  489. Verse 8,

  490. But you will receive power

  491. when the Holy Spirit

  492. has come upon you,

  493. and you will be My witnesses

  494. in Jerusalem,

  495. and in all Judea,

  496. and Samaria,

  497. and to the ends of the earth.

  498. And in chapter 2,

  499. the Spirit in fact does come

  500. on them with power.

  501. And Peter preaches

  502. his great sermon

  503. on the day of Pentecost.

  504. And thousands and thousands

  505. are included

  506. in the church's number

  507. on that day.

  508. We don't have to be anxious.

  509. We have a helper in this.

  510. One who will carry us along

  511. and who will speak

  512. on our behalf.

  513. Why are we so afraid

  514. to open our mouths

  515. and share the Gospel?

  516. We have a helper.

  517. A person of the triune God

  518. that Jesus has said

  519. will speak on our behalf.

  520. To what end?

  521. The last half of verse 9,

  522. to bear witness before them.

  523. Verse 10,

  524. And the Gospel,

  525. the good news of Jesus Christ,

  526. must first be proclaimed

  527. to all nations.

  528. In the last half of verse 13,

  529. but the one who endures

  530. to the end.

  531. will be saved.

  532. How are we to function?

  533. How are we to live?

  534. As the apostles are about to be

  535. left behind by Jesus Christ,

  536. they're about to stay where they are,

  537. empowered by the Spirit,

  538. what is their task?

  539. The very mission

  540. that's set before them?

  541. And that is for them

  542. to go into the world

  543. and make disciples

  544. of Jesus Christ.

  545. To proclaim His greatness,

  546. to be a witness

  547. before these councils

  548. that they'll be brought before.

  549. To proclaim the good news

  550. of the Gospel,

  551. not simply to make converts,

  552. but to make those

  553. who will endure

  554. to the end,

  555. which is the necessity

  556. of the Christian life.

  557. If your heart is regenerate,

  558. if God has in fact

  559. changed who you are,

  560. you will not go back on that.

  561. And I would say to you

  562. that it is an impossibility

  563. that you could,

  564. you will in fact,

  565. endure to the end

  566. for His name.

  567. So all of this

  568. will come to pass.

  569. The entire passage

  570. will come to pass

  571. back on verse 10

  572. when the Gospel

  573. is proclaimed

  574. to all nations.

  575. We see a glimpse of heaven

  576. in Revelation 5-9.

  577. John writes,

  578. And they sang a new song

  579. saying,

  580. Worthy are you

  581. to take the scroll

  582. and to open its seals,

  583. for you were slain,

  584. this is Christ,

  585. and by your blood

  586. you ransomed people

  587. for God

  588. from every tribe

  589. and language

  590. and people

  591. and nation.

  592. God has always

  593. been about

  594. His global glory.

  595. And He is still

  596. about that to this day

  597. because the task

  598. is yet to be finished

  599. because the end

  600. is not here.

  601. Now as we look

  602. at the world,

  603. there's a lot of statistics

  604. out there.

  605. I'm just going to give you

  606. a few.

  607. Categorically,

  608. we tend to talk about

  609. peoples in terms

  610. of unreached,

  611. reached,

  612. unreached,

  613. and unengaged.

  614. The definition

  615. of unreached

  616. is typically a group

  617. that has less

  618. than 2%

  619. that claim

  620. to be Christians.

  621. This is a broad

  622. definition of what

  623. Christian even means,

  624. self-professing

  625. Christians.

  626. It is estimated

  627. that of the

  628. 7.1 billion people

  629. alive in the world

  630. today,

  631. 2.91 billion of them

  632. live in unreached

  633. people groups

  634. with little or no

  635. access to the gospel

  636. of Jesus Christ.

  637. So unreached

  638. being less than

  639. 2% of the population

  640. that just says,

  641. just professes

  642. to be

  643. a Christian.

  644. According to

  645. Joshua Project,

  646. which is a great website

  647. if you ever want

  648. to peruse it,

  649. there are approximately

  650. 16,500 unique

  651. people groups

  652. in the world

  653. with about

  654. 6,900 of them

  655. considered

  656. unreached.

  657. Now,

  658. unengaged

  659. unreached

  660. people groups,

  661. according to

  662. finishing the task,

  663. there are 440

  664. unengaged

  665. unreached

  666. people groups

  667. with populations

  668. over 25,000

  669. together numbering

  670. over 24

  671. million souls

  672. that are still

  673. beyond the reach

  674. of the gospel.

  675. These 440

  676. are perhaps

  677. the neediest

  678. of the needy

  679. as they are

  680. unengaged,

  681. which means

  682. that no church,

  683. no missionary,

  684. no mission agency,

  685. no one has yet

  686. taken responsibility

  687. to tell them

  688. about Jesus Christ.

  689. Nothing has

  690. happened

  691. with an

  692. unengaged

  693. people.

  694. And beloved,

  695. this should break

  696. our hearts.

  697. as you look

  698. back over

  699. this past

  700. year

  701. at your

  702. activity

  703. for the

  704. kingdom,

  705. it should break

  706. our hearts

  707. that we know

  708. that the end

  709. is coming.

  710. We don't know

  711. when,

  712. but it will

  713. come.

  714. Jesus will

  715. someday return

  716. and judge

  717. the world.

  718. Those who

  719. are not in

  720. Christ will

  721. be eternally

  722. damned,

  723. and we do

  724. almost

  725. nothing

  726. about it.

  727. Shame on

  728. us.

  729. The great

  730. aim of our

  731. lives

  732. is to be

  733. given to

  734. the mission

  735. of God

  736. in the

  737. world.

  738. And that

  739. is,

  740. He came

  741. to seek

  742. and save

  743. the lost.

  744. That's why

  745. He came.

  746. And we're

  747. meant to be

  748. part of

  749. that work,

  750. not because

  751. He needs

  752. us.

  753. Hear this,

  754. God doesn't

  755. need you.

  756. Don't begin

  757. to think so

  758. much of

  759. yourself.

  760. But God

  761. loves you.

  762. And God

  763. knows the

  764. best thing

  765. for you

  766. is to have

  767. more of

  768. Him.

  769. And you

  770. know how

  771. you do

  772. that?

  773. You join

  774. Him and

  775. you walk

  776. alongside

  777. Him in

  778. the work

  779. that He's

  780. accomplishing

  781. in the

  782. world.

  783. You get

  784. busy about

  785. the work

  786. of God

  787. and you

  788. experience

  789. Him in

  790. it.

  791. We can,

  792. of course,

  793. argue over

  794. definitions,

  795. talk about

  796. unreached and

  797. unengaged,

  798. but one thing

  799. can't be argued,

  800. the end has

  801. not yet

  802. come,

  803. so the

  804. job is

  805. yet to

  806. be

  807. finished.

  808. And we

  809. should see

  810. this as the

  811. people of

  812. God

  813. as a

  814. great

  815. opportunity

  816. to have

  817. our joy

  818. made

  819. complete

  820. in

  821. advancing

  822. the

  823. gospel

  824. where

  825. we

  826. live

  827. and

  828. beyond.

  829. Look at Paul's

  830. attitude concerning

  831. preaching of the

  832. gospel.

  833. He writes in

  834. 1 Corinthians 9.16,

  835. For if I preach

  836. the gospel,

  837. that gives me

  838. no ground

  839. for boasting,

  840. for necessity

  841. is laid

  842. upon me.

  843. Woe to me

  844. if I do not

  845. preach

  846. the gospel.

  847. Woe to me

  848. if I do not

  849. preach

  850. the gospel.

  851. Are we ashamed

  852. of the

  853. gospel?

  854. Paul says in

  855. Romans 1

  856. that he's not

  857. ashamed of it

  858. because it's

  859. the power of

  860. God for

  861. salvation.

  862. salvation.

  863. It's what

  864. snatches people

  865. out of the

  866. fires of hell.

  867. And we

  868. don't warn

  869. them.

  870. How cold

  871. and callous

  872. are we?

  873. Wes reminded

  874. me this week

  875. of a

  876. great sermon

  877. which is

  878. from the

  879. book of

  880. Revelation

  881. by a

  882. pastor I

  883. love

  884. by the

  885. name of

  886. Arturo

  887. Azerdia.

  888. If you ever

  889. want to

  890. peruse his

  891. stuff,

  892. spiritempoweredpreaching.com

  893. maybe.org

  894. I encourage

  895. you to check

  896. it out.

  897. But he

  898. tells

  899. this story

  900. of a

  901. dangerous

  902. sea

  903. coast

  904. where

  905. shipwrecks

  906. often occur

  907. and on

  908. that

  909. sea

  910. coast

  911. was

  912. a

  913. single

  914. crude

  915. life-saving

  916. station

  917. with only

  918. one boat,

  919. a small hut

  920. where people

  921. could come in

  922. and be

  923. warmed

  924. after surviving

  925. a wreck.

  926. And many,

  927. many lives

  928. were saved

  929. by this

  930. little station.

  931. They were

  932. all about

  933. the work

  934. of getting

  935. out into

  936. the sea

  937. and saving

  938. those who

  939. were tossed

  940. overboard

  941. in these

  942. wrecks.

  943. So much

  944. so that it

  945. became famous.

  946. And many

  947. of those

  948. who had

  949. been saved

  950. by the

  951. station

  952. or heard

  953. telling of

  954. the station

  955. wanted to

  956. in some

  957. way become

  958. associated

  959. with it.

  960. And so they

  961. gave of their

  962. money and they

  963. soon became

  964. embarrassed by the

  965. crude nature

  966. of the little

  967. station, the little

  968. hut and the

  969. single boat.

  970. So they

  971. enlarged its size

  972. and they

  973. improved its

  974. interior to the

  975. degree that it

  976. became a place

  977. they desired to

  978. spend their free

  979. hours.

  980. A lot like a

  981. small club, a

  982. bit of a

  983. monument to

  984. life-saving.

  985. Soon the

  986. members were

  987. no longer

  988. interested on

  989. going on

  990. life-saving

  991. missions, having

  992. to be trained,

  993. getting out and

  994. doing the hard

  995. work.

  996. So they hired

  997. life-saving

  998. crews.

  999. They began to

  1000. pay some men

  1001. who went off

  1002. and did that

  1003. on their

  1004. behalf.

  1005. And as many

  1006. people were

  1007. saved by the

  1008. newly hired

  1009. life-saving

  1010. crew, the

  1011. people they

  1012. plucked from

  1013. the ocean

  1014. ruined the

  1015. general appeal

  1016. of the

  1017. club.

  1018. After all,

  1019. they were

  1020. wet and

  1021. distraught and

  1022. they needed

  1023. further assistance.

  1024. They needed

  1025. people to

  1026. come alongside

  1027. them and

  1028. help them.

  1029. And so a

  1030. committee was

  1031. quickly formed

  1032. to address the

  1033. issue and a

  1034. building outside

  1035. of the

  1036. life-saving

  1037. station was

  1038. promptly built

  1039. to clean up

  1040. these individuals

  1041. before they

  1042. were permitted

  1043. inside the

  1044. station.

  1045. A meeting

  1046. soon was

  1047. held where

  1048. some of the

  1049. members insisted

  1050. that the

  1051. primary purpose

  1052. of the

  1053. life-saving

  1054. station was

  1055. to save

  1056. lives.

  1057. After all,

  1058. they were a

  1059. life-saving

  1060. station and

  1061. they were

  1062. simply told

  1063. they could

  1064. go down

  1065. the coast

  1066. and begin

  1067. another

  1068. life-saving

  1069. station and

  1070. so they

  1071. did.

  1072. Over some

  1073. years, the

  1074. process repeated

  1075. itself, the

  1076. new station

  1077. becoming like

  1078. the old, and

  1079. this repeated

  1080. itself again

  1081. and again.

  1082. If you visit

  1083. that coast

  1084. today, you

  1085. will find

  1086. many life-saving

  1087. stations.

  1088. Shipwrecks are

  1089. still common in

  1090. those waters,

  1091. waters, but

  1092. most everyone

  1093. drowns.

  1094. This is the

  1095. place that we

  1096. live, right?

  1097. People damned

  1098. to hell for

  1099. eternity because

  1100. of their lost

  1101. state.

  1102. And we get

  1103. together in the

  1104. niceties of our

  1105. club, and we

  1106. don't get out

  1107. there and get

  1108. and brave the

  1109. oceans and be

  1110. where they are

  1111. and share the

  1112. good news of

  1113. Jesus Christ with

  1114. them.

  1115. drag them

  1116. back onto

  1117. shore.

  1118. Beloved, if we

  1119. are to be

  1120. disciples of

  1121. Jesus Christ,

  1122. even claim

  1123. His name, we

  1124. are to follow

  1125. Him where He

  1126. leads.

  1127. And what did

  1128. He come to

  1129. do?

  1130. Luke 19.10,

  1131. the Son of

  1132. Man came to

  1133. seek and

  1134. save the

  1135. lost.

  1136. We spend so

  1137. much of our

  1138. time distracted

  1139. by absolute

  1140. vanity in

  1141. America.

  1142. We are

  1143. entering one

  1144. of the

  1145. seasons that

  1146. ought to be

  1147. so much about

  1148. Jesus Christ

  1149. and come so

  1150. much about the

  1151. vanity of this

  1152. world.

  1153. I absolutely

  1154. want to throw

  1155. up my

  1156. Thanksgiving meal

  1157. with this

  1158. Black Friday

  1159. insanity that

  1160. goes on.

  1161. Pursuing the

  1162. frivolity, the

  1163. stuff that fades

  1164. away, it means

  1165. absolutely nothing.

  1166. We take so

  1167. much effort to

  1168. position ourselves,

  1169. to compare

  1170. ourselves to

  1171. others, to

  1172. look good by

  1173. what we have

  1174. and what we

  1175. can do, the

  1176. leisure of our

  1177. days.

  1178. It's a shame.

  1179. Let me give you

  1180. an insane version

  1181. of this, which

  1182. is not too

  1183. unlike much

  1184. of what we

  1185. do.

  1186. Did you know

  1187. that in 18th

  1188. century England,

  1189. wealthy landowners,

  1190. there was a

  1191. trend for a

  1192. while where they

  1193. competed with

  1194. one another to

  1195. have hermits

  1196. living on their

  1197. properties in a

  1198. hermitage.

  1199. they would

  1200. build them

  1201. tiny little

  1202. homes and

  1203. they would

  1204. hire a guy

  1205. to grow a

  1206. long white

  1207. beard and

  1208. wear robes and

  1209. not talk to

  1210. anybody but

  1211. just hang out

  1212. in the garden.

  1213. This was his

  1214. job to do.

  1215. The ones who

  1216. had the most

  1217. money actually

  1218. were able to

  1219. contract these

  1220. guys.

  1221. They would

  1222. contract them

  1223. typically for a

  1224. period of seven

  1225. years and at

  1226. the end of that

  1227. time they would

  1228. pay them enough

  1229. that they would

  1230. never have to

  1231. work again.

  1232. So it was an

  1233. appealing draw for

  1234. someone with no

  1235. skills but a

  1236. long white beard.

  1237. Because the

  1238. emotion of the

  1239. day that was

  1240. most valued was

  1241. melancholy.

  1242. So the hermit was

  1243. to sit contemplatively.

  1244. Those who

  1245. couldn't afford the

  1246. hermit, the real

  1247. life hermit, would

  1248. get a mannequin or

  1249. sometimes an

  1250. animatron, I guess.

  1251. A puppet that

  1252. would be worked by

  1253. a lesser servant,

  1254. one that didn't

  1255. have a long white

  1256. beard, would lay

  1257. behind him and

  1258. work his hands and

  1259. arms.

  1260. When people came

  1261. walking by on the

  1262. streets.

  1263. This has been

  1264. replaced by the

  1265. garden gnome.

  1266. This is the

  1267. origin of the

  1268. garden gnome if

  1269. you weren't making

  1270. the connection

  1271. yourself.

  1272. Insane, right?

  1273. Competing with

  1274. such a stupid

  1275. thing.

  1276. If you ever get

  1277. to visit England,

  1278. apparently these

  1279. little homes still

  1280. exist in these

  1281. big fancy house

  1282. gardens.

  1283. What's your

  1284. hermit?

  1285. What thing do

  1286. you care so

  1287. much about that

  1288. you wouldn't give

  1289. it up to follow

  1290. Christ?

  1291. Beloved, we have

  1292. many of them.

  1293. Would you give it

  1294. all?

  1295. Would you sacrifice

1296. every bit of it to

  1297. gain more of

  1298. Jesus?

  1299. I think we

  1300. initially say,

  1301. yes, of course,

  1302. I would.

  1303. Your heart needs

  1304. to catch up to

  1305. your head.

  1306. We would look

  1307. different.

  1308. We would spend

  1309. our days differently.

  1310. We would do

  1311. different things.

  1312. If we loved

  1313. Him the way

  1314. we should.

  1315. If we desired

  1316. Him the way

  1317. that we should.

  1318. Listen to

  1319. John's correction

  1320. in 1 John

    1 John 2 chapter mention

  1321. chapter 2.

  1322. Do not love

  1323. the world

  1324. or the things

  1325. in the world.

  1326. If anyone

  1327. loves the world,

  1328. the love of the

  1329. Father is not

  1330. in him.

  1331. For all that is

  1332. in the world,

  1333. the desires of

  1334. the flesh,

  1335. and the desires

  1336. of the eyes,

  1337. and pride of

  1338. life is not

  1339. from the Father,

  1340. but is from

  1341. the world.

  1342. And the world

  1343. is passing away

  1344. along with

  1345. its desires,

  1346. but whoever

  1347. does the will

  1348. of God

  1349. abides

  1350. forever.

  1351. What is the

  1352. will of God?

  1353. That we would

  1354. seek and save

  1355. the lost.

  1356. That we would

  1357. be disciples

  1358. who make

  1359. disciples.

  1360. You want to

  1361. know what it

  1362. looks like in

  1363. verse 13

  1364. to endure

  1365. to the end?

  1366. It's that in

  1367. spite of all

  1368. of this activity

  1369. going on around

  1370. us,

  1371. in spite of

  1372. the way in

  1373. which the world

  1374. is going to

  1375. hate us,

  1376. the way we're

  1377. going to

  1378. suffer in

  1379. this world,

  1380. we still

  1381. make disciples.

  1382. We still

  1383. show people

  1384. a more

  1385. excellent

  1386. thing

  1387. than all

  1388. of the

  1389. frivolity

  1390. of this

  1391. world,

  1392. all the

  1393. things that

  1394. they can

  1395. touch,

  1396. all the

  1397. little

  1398. bobs,

  1399. and all

  1400. the little

  1401. whistles of

  1402. this world.

  1403. We show

  1404. them that

  1405. Jesus is

  1406. better.

  1407. And we

  1408. do that

  1409. in our

  1410. own

  1411. experience,

  1412. and we

  1413. do that

  1414. in the

  1415. way we

  1416. live,

  1417. in our

  1418. display,

  1419. and we

  1420. do that

  1421. in our

  1422. proclamation.

  1423. We must

  1424. go and

  1425. show the

  1426. world.

  1427. Do you

  1428. long for

  1429. the return

  1430. of Christ?

  1431. I do.

  1432. Is there

  1433. anything in

  1434. this world

  1435. that you

  1436. want to

  1437. see

  1438. accomplished

  1439. before

  1440. Jesus

  1441. comes

  1442. back?

  1443. It's an

  1444. idol.

  1445. You just

  1446. need to

  1447. stop

  1448. worshiping

  1449. it.

  1450. Come,

  1451. Lord

  1452. Jesus,

  1453. come.

  1454. It should

  1455. be the

  1456. cry of

  1457. our

  1458. hearts

  1459. every

  1460. single

  1461. day.

  1462. And we

  1463. ought to

  1464. be about

  1465. the work,

  1466. not that

  1467. we can

  1468. change

  1469. the

  1470. date,

  1471. but we

  1472. ought to

  1473. be about

  1474. the work

  1475. of getting

  1476. to that

  1477. day as

  1478. the Gospels

  1479. proclaim to

  1480. all nations.

  1481. The primary

  1482. thing,

  1483. not just for

  1484. your pastor.

  1485. It's my

  1486. job to do

  1487. spiritual

  1488. things and

  1489. not yours.

  1490. It's our

  1491. job to do

  1492. spiritual

  1493. things.

  1494. It's our

  1495. job to

  1496. reach out

  1497. and love

  1498. this community

  1499. and beyond

  1500. with the

  1501. Gospel of

  1502. Jesus Christ.

  1503. I just

  1504. play a

  1505. different role

  1506. in that

  1507. process.

  1508. What is

  1509. your role

  1510. in that

  1511. process?

  1512. Submit

  1513. yourself to

  1514. the Lordship

  1515. of Jesus

  1516. Christ,

  1517. whose son

  1518. is the

  1519. Christ,

  1520. back in

  1521. chapter 12.

  1522. We talked

  1523. about what

  1524. it meant

  1525. to submit

  1526. yourself.

  1527. Do you

  1528. get up

  1529. daily and

  1530. do you

  1531. say to

  1532. God,

  1533. you rule

  1534. over my

  1535. day.

  1536. I'm going

  1537. to die

  1538. to myself

  1539. today.

  1540. I'm going

  1541. to pick

  1542. up my

  1543. cross.

  1544. I'm going

  1545. to follow

  1546. you wherever

  1547. you'll

  1548. lead me.

  1549. I won't

  1550. be anxious.

  1551. I'll open

  1552. my mouth

  1553. and I'll

  1554. speak because

  1555. I know

  1556. that I have

  1557. the Spirit.

  1558. I know

  1559. that the

  1560. Gospel is

  1561. the power

  1562. of God

  1563. for salvation.

  1564. Do with

  1565. me what

  1566. you will

  1567. this day

  1568. and begin

  1569. to seek

  1570. out the

  1571. opportunities.

  1572. So many

  1573. of us are

  1574. so spiritually

  1575. fat because

  1576. we get

  1577. fed and

  1578. we get

  1579. fed and

  1580. we get

  1581. fed and

  1582. we never

  1583. go exercise

  1584. our faith

  1585. at all.

  1586. You combine

  1587. those two

  1588. things,

  1589. you begin

  1590. to learn

  1591. things,

  1592. you learn

  1593. doctrine and

  1594. you affirm

  1595. it by

  1596. experience and

  1597. your faith

  1598. will grow

  1599. exponentially.

  1600. I promise

  1601. you.

  1602. Begin to

  1603. ask that

  1604. God

  1605. would put

  1606. you in

  1607. situations

  1608. to work

  1609. things out.

  1610. Young

  1611. people,

  1612. you're

  1613. in a

  1614. stage in

  1615. your life

  1616. where you're

  1617. preparing for

  1618. the next

  1619. step.

  1620. This is

  1621. not true

  1622. of the

  1623. Gospel.

  1624. You've

  1625. been recruited

  1626. as an

  1627. ambassador.

  1628. You claim

  1629. the name

  1630. of Christ,

  1631. you are

  1632. His and

  1633. He's got

  1634. a mission

  1635. for you.

  1636. Go get

  1637. to the

  1638. mission.

  1639. You don't

  1640. spend years

  1641. languishing

  1642. getting ready

  1643. for the

  1644. mission.

  1645. The mission

  1646. is now.

  1647. The mission

  1648. is your

  1649. roommate and

  1650. your classmates

  1651. and the

  1652. places that

  1653. you work.

  1654. be active

  1655. about this.

  1656. When was the

  1657. last time you

  1658. or someone

  1659. you knew

  1660. saw someone

  1661. come to

  1662. faith in

  1663. Christ?

  1664. Christ?

  1665. It's a

  1666. piercing

  1667. question,

  1668. is it

  1669. not?

  1670. We should

  1671. see people

  1672. coming in

  1673. droves to

  1674. know the

  1675. one and

  1676. only Lord

  1677. and Savior,

  1678. Jesus Christ.

  1679. Do you

  1680. believe that

  1681. God wants

  1682. to do this

  1683. in our

  1684. communities?

  1685. I do.

  1686. I think He

  1687. has plans

  1688. for this

  1689. area.

  1690. I think He

  1691. has people

  1692. that He

  1693. loves

  1694. desperately,

  1695. that He

  1696. wants to

  1697. be part of

  1698. the family.

  1699. I want to

  1700. be a part

  1701. of that.

  1702. I want to

  1703. be involved

  1704. in that

  1705. process of

  1706. bringing people

  1707. into the

  1708. fold,

  1709. bringing them

  1710. underneath

  1711. the Great

  1712. Shepherd.

  1713. What is

  1714. wrong with

  1715. us?

  1716. let's pray.

  1717. Let's

  1718. pray.

  1719. Let's

  1720. pray.

  1721. Let's

  1722. pray.
