  1. Certainly in varying degrees, and it's certainly true in some degree in our church, that there's a gap in what we say we believe and the way in which we actually live that out.

  2. That at given moments in any of our days, you can look at us and say, this person doesn't love Jesus at all.

  3. And so two weeks ago, I kind of began this charge to discipleship as we're taking a bit of a break from Mark for the month of February,

  4. and began by talking about how if we are going to follow him, then we have to care about what he cares about.

  5. That the primary thing we should be concerned about is the advancement of the gospel, the building of the kingdom, the making of disciples.

  6. This was his great commission, the big charge that he gave to the church.

  7. Our church, as a local expression of the universal church, has a responsibility to this.

  8. And not that it's a burden, but it's a joy that God has given us to his mission in the world.

  9. Last week, we looked at the ongoing way that this activity is encouraged and supported, and that is in the life of a congregation,

  10. in the way in which the church meets, or at very least, should meet together.

  11. And I emphasized the fact that the primary way in which our church is going to do this,

  12. the specific way that our church is going to do this, is through our community outreach groups.

  13. We're going to be pressing at each other to have our actions match the things that we say that we believe.

  14. That we're going to press at each other in this way.

  15. And I said to you last week, as this week's sermon is going to be about the particulars, the biblical parameters for evangelism,

  16. finding people becoming, that first step of becoming a disciple,

  17. that one sermon on evangelism is not enough for you.

  18. In fact, if I were to preach a sermon on evangelism, how to evangelize every single week for the rest of this year,

  19. it wouldn't be enough, because you need more than that.

  20. Not just hearing it, you need to be putting it into practice, and we need one another to do this.

  21. The accountability and the pressing, we need to be encouraged in this direction.

  22. Living for God in the kingdom opposes the desires of our flesh.

  23. Praise God we have new spirits, we've been made new creations,

  24. and God has given us a community called the church to push each other in this way.

  25. And so this is what we talked about last week.

  26. And so this week we're going to talk a bit more about the specifics of sharing the gospel,

  27. and then next week, discipleship.

  28. How do we go on from there?

  29. Once we see people come to faith in Christ, what do we do?

  30. What are the responsibilities we should take up?

  31. And how do the scriptures guide us in that process?

  32. And so our major text for today, I had you in Mark 8.

  33. Turn back just a few pages to Mark chapter 4.

    Mark 4 chapter mention

  34. I'm going to read to you a rather large chunk of Jesus' teaching here.

  35. I hope that you'll stick with me.

  36. I'm going to come back and address specific parts of it,

  37. but Jesus' teaching is taken here in this completion,

  38. and he begins with this parable called the parable of the sower.

  39. And I want to draw your attention before we read the entire thing together,

  40. because in verse 10, we see that the disciples don't know exactly what he's talking about, right?

  41. And when he was alone, those around him with the twelve asked him about the parables.

  42. This one specifically, he says,

  43. And he said to them,

  44. To you has been given the secret of the kingdom of God,

  45. but for those outside everything in parables,

  46. so that they may indeed see but not perceive,

  47. may indeed hear but not understand,

  48. lest they should turn and be forgiven.

  49. And he's giving these parables in such a way that those with spiritual illumination will understand them,

  50. and those without will not.

  51. And then in verse 13, he says,

  52. Do you not understand this parable?

  53. How then will you understand all parables?

  54. So this is a very important one for us to get right,

  55. and he goes on with a couple of other parables.

  56. Also, mostly, at least two of the three,

  57. have this agrarian theme to them as well,

  58. to help them get some understanding of the way in which the kingdom is going to come about,

  59. and their part to play in that.

  60. So follow along with me as I read Mark chapter 4,

    Mark 4:1–32

  61. verses 1 through 32.

  62. Here we go.

  63. Again, he began to teach beside the sea,

  64. and a very large crowd gathered about him,

  65. so that he got into a boat and sat in it on the sea,

  66. and the whole crowd was beside the sea on the land.

  67. And he was teaching them many things in parables,

  68. and in his teaching he said to them,

  69. Listen,

  70. a sower went out to sow,

  71. and as he sowed,

  72. some seed fell along the path,

  73. and the birds came and devoured it.

  74. Other seed fell along the rocky ground

  75. where it did not have much soil,

  76. and immediately it sprang up

  77. since it had no depth of soil.

  78. And when the sun rose,

  79. it was scorched,

  80. and since it had no root,

  81. it withered away.

  82. Other seed fell among thorns,

  83. and the thorns grew up and choked it

  84. and yielded no grain.

  85. And other seed fell into good soil

  86. and produced grain,

  87. growing up and increasing

  88. and yielding thirtyfold

  89. and sixtyfold

  90. and a hundredfold.

  91. And he said,

  92. He who has ears to hear,

  93. let him hear.

  94. So we see that there's these

  95. varying types of soil,

  96. and the reality of this

  97. is that the scene would have been

  98. very familiar to them

  99. as this was an agrarian society

  100. by and large,

  101. that they had many, many fields

  102. around the cities,

  103. and there would have been

  104. these hard-worn paths in between.

  105. And in fact,

  106. a lot of the roads

  107. that were traveled in this day

  108. were simply these paths

  109. between the fields.

  110. So this hard path

  111. is what he's referring to there.

  112. And the sower goes out,

  113. and as he's scattering his seed,

  114. as he's throwing it to the wind

  115. so that it'll be scattered

  116. across the field,

  117. it lands in various places

  118. and various things happen.

  119. We see good soil,

  120. we see a rocky soil,

  121. we see one that's choked out

  122. by thorns,

  123. and we see another

  124. that the birds come along

  125. and eat it up.

  126. So he's giving us

  127. this picture

  128. that they would have

  129. totally been able

  130. to wrap their minds around

  131. that this is the way

  132. in which the word of God

  133. is going to be received

  134. in the world.

  135. So let's get down

  136. to his explanation.

  137. Verse 14,

  138. the sower sows the word.

  139. The seed is the word of God.

  140. It's the gospel.

  141. And these are the ones

  142. along the path

  143. where the word is sown.

  144. When they hear,

  145. Satan immediately comes

  146. and takes away the word

  147. that is sown in them.

  148. And these are the ones

  149. sown on rocky ground,

  150. the one who,

  151. when they hear the word,

  152. immediately receive it with joy.

  153. And they have no root

  154. in themselves,

  155. but endure for a while.

  156. Then, when tribulation

  157. or persecution arises

  158. on account of the word,

  159. immediately they fall away.

  160. And others are the ones

  161. sown among thorns.

  162. They are those who hear the word,

  163. but the cares of the world

  164. and the deceitfulness

  165. of riches

  166. and the desires

  167. for other things

  168. enter in and choke the word,

  169. and it proves unfruitful.

  170. But those who were sown

  171. on the good soil

  172. are the ones who hear the word

  173. and accept it

  174. and bear fruit,

  175. thirtyfold

  176. and sixtyfold

  177. and a hundredfold.

  178. And he said to them,

  179. Is a lamp brought in

  180. to be put under a basket

  181. or under a bed

  182. and not on a stand?

  183. For nothing is hidden

  184. except to be made manifest,

  185. nor is anything secret

  186. except to come to light.

  187. If anyone has ears to hear,

  188. let him hear.

  189. And he said to them,

  190. Pay attention to what you hear.

  191. With the measure you use,

  192. it will measure to you,

  193. and still more will be added to you.

  194. For the one who has,

  195. more will be given.

  196. And from the one who has not,

  197. even what he has

  198. will be taken away.

  199. And he said,

  200. The kingdom of God

  201. is as if a man

  202. should scatter seed

  203. on the ground.

  204. He sleeps and rises

  205. night and day,

  206. and the seed sprouts

  207. and grows.

  208. He knows not how.

  209. The earth produces

  210. by itself

  211. first the blade,

  212. then the ear,

  213. then the full grain

  214. in the ear.

  215. But when the grain is ripe,

  216. at once he puts in the sickle,

  217. because the harvest

  218. has come.

  219. And he said,

  220. With what can we compare

  221. the kingdom of God,

  222. or what parable

  223. shall we use for it?

  224. It is like a grain

  225. of mustard seed,

  226. which,

  227. when sown on the ground,

  228. is the smallest

  229. of all the seeds

  230. on the earth.

  231. Yet when it is sown,

  232. it grows up

  233. and becomes larger

  234. than all the garden plants

  235. and puts out

  236. large branches

  237. so that the birds

  238. of the air

  239. can make nests

  240. in its shade.

  241. Let's pray together.

  242. Father God,

  243. I would ask today

  244. as we open up your word

  245. that you would humble us

  246. before it.

  247. we recognize

  248. that all scripture

  249. is breathed out by you

  250. and that it's

  251. profitable for us.

  252. Not simply for us

  253. to gain

  254. for our own sake,

  255. but that we might

  256. live righteously

  257. before you,

  258. that we would

  259. please you,

  260. which is

  261. certainly

  262. great gain.

  263. I pray,

  264. Father,

  265. that you will work in us

  266. a miracle

  267. by your Spirit,

  268. that the scriptures

  269. will be illuminated

  270. to us this day,

  271. that you will change

  272. our hearts

  273. by the listening

  274. to it

  275. and the application

  276. of it.

  277. Find us, God,

  278. not to be

  279. simply hearers,

  280. but doers also

  281. of your word.

  282. Find

  283. working in us

  284. the great mark

  285. of Christian

  286. maturity,

  287. which is obedience.

  288. And we pray this

  289. in Christ's name.

  290. Amen.

  291. So,

  292. three points

  293. I want to give

  294. to you today.

  295. And the first one is

  296. that we must

  297. share

  298. the gospel.

  299. We must

  300. share

  301. the gospel.

  302. And I know

  303. that that is

  304. maybe even

  305. somewhat trite

  306. in your mind.

  307. You've heard this

  308. many times before.

  309. Of course we must

  310. share

  311. the gospel.

  312. But here is a

  313. point at which

  314. I think that we

  315. know this to be true,

  316. but so very rarely

  317. prove it.

  318. We very rarely

  319. express that

  320. and walk it

  321. out.

  322. Remember verse

  323. 20 of chapter 4.

  324. Those that were

  325. sown on the good

  326. soil are the

  327. ones who hear

  328. the word.

  329. We're all

  330. saying,

  331. we're all

  332. expressing when

  333. we say we're

  334. disciples of Jesus

  335. Christ that we

  336. are good soil.

  337. We have received

  338. the word.

  339. We accept it.

  340. And he says

  341. it bears fruit.

  342. Thirty-fold,

  343. sixty-fold,

  344. a hundred-fold.

  345. That this will be

  346. a necessary

  347. outcome of the

  348. life of a

  349. disciple of

  350. Jesus Christ.

  351. The bearing

  352. of fruit.

  353. Verse 21,

  354. And he said to

  355. them,

  356. Is a lamp

  357. brought in to

  358. be put under

  359. a basket or

  360. under a bed and

  361. not on a stand?

  362. For nothing is

  363. hidden except to

  364. be manifest,

  365. nor is anything

  366. secret except to

  367. come to light.

  368. And he's being

  369. very tongue-in-cheek.

  370. Why would anybody

  371. ever light a lamp?

  372. Why would God

  373. illuminate our

  374. minds and our

  375. hearts and then

  376. have us hidden

  377. away somewhere?

  378. This is not the

  379. job of the believer.

  380. The job of the

  381. believer is to be

  382. out in the

  383. darkness,

  384. giving light to

  385. people who

  386. desperately need

  387. it.

  388. It's the obvious

  389. thing that you do

  390. with light as you

  391. expose it to the

  392. darkness.

  393. I want us to have

  394. the mind that was

  395. Paul's mind as he

  396. shares in Romans

  397. and in 1 Corinthians.

  398. Romans 1.16,

  399. he says,

  400. for I am not

  401. ashamed of the

  402. gospel.

  403. We are so often

  404. ashamed of the

  405. good news of

  406. Jesus Christ,

  407. for it is the

  408. power of God

  409. for salvation to

  410. everyone who

  411. believes, to the

  412. Jew first, and

  413. also to the

  414. Greek.

  415. This message

  416. that we

  417. proclaimed is

  418. the message by

  419. which we came to

  420. believe, and it

  421. is the very power

  422. of God to bring

  423. others into his

  424. kingdom.

  425. those who are

  426. without this

  427. message eternally

  428. damned, eternally

  429. separated from him,

  430. and they will

  431. suffer torment

  432. forever.

  433. There's a general

  434. grace to this

  435. world right now

  436. that keeps people

  437. who have sinned

  438. against God from

  439. not being just

  440. destroyed.

  441. People generally

  442. experience and

  443. enjoy the warmth

  444. of the sun, the

  445. goodness of food,

  446. the celebration

  447. of family, but

  448. someday when they

  449. pass, those things

  450. will pass away,

  451. and they will be

  452. tormented forever

  453. and ever.

  454. And it is the

  455. gospel that is the

  456. power of God to

  457. save them from it.

  458. Paul writes again

  459. in Romans chapter

    Romans 10:13

  460. 10, verse 13 and

  461. 14, for everyone

  462. who calls on the

  463. name of the Lord

  464. will be saved.

  465. How then will

  466. they call on him

  467. in whom they

  468. have not believed?

  469. And how are they

  470. to believe in him

  471. in whom they've

  472. never heard?

  473. And how are they

  474. to hear without

  475. someone preaching?

  476. Beloved, don't

  477. get caught up in

  478. the cultural

  479. narrative that

  480. there are multiple

  481. ways to heaven.

  482. There are not.

  483. Jesus is the way,

  484. the truth, and

  485. the life.

  486. People must respond

  487. in faith to

  488. gospel proclamation.

  489. And what Paul is

  490. expressing to us

  491. here is that we

  492. are the tools by

  493. which the gospel

  494. is proclaimed.

  495. I may feel like a

  496. heavy burden laid

  497. upon your shoulders,

  498. but let me say to

  499. you that God

  500. doesn't need you.

  501. God is God.

  502. He would cease

  503. to be God

  504. if he needed

  505. you.

  506. But God,

  507. in all of his

  508. infinite wisdom

  509. and his love

  510. for us,

  511. has chosen to

  512. use us

  513. to be the

  514. instruments

  515. for gospel

  516. advancement

  517. for the sake

  518. of our joy.

  519. To experience

  520. the blessing

  521. of being part

  522. of his work

  523. in the world.

  524. So we must

  525. preach.

  526. We must go.

  527. We are tools

  528. in his hands.

  529. In Romans 9,

  530. 1-3,

  531. Paul says this,

  532. I am speaking

  533. the truth in

  534. Christ.

  535. I am not lying.

  536. My conscience

  537. bears me witness

  538. in the Holy Spirit

  539. that I have

  540. great sorrow

  541. and unceasing

  542. anguish

  543. in my heart.

  544. For I could

  545. wish that I

  546. myself were

  547. accursed

  548. and cut off

  549. from Christ

  550. for the sake

  551. of my brothers.

  552. The longing

  553. of Paul's

  554. heart to see

  555. those that

  556. were his kin,

  557. other Israelites,

  558. those who had

  559. been given

  560. so much revelation

  561. of the truth

  562. of God,

  563. and yet had

  564. not responded

  565. favorably to it.

  566. He so desired

  567. to see them

  568. be part of

  569. the kingdom

  570. that he said

  571. he himself

  572. would be willing

  573. to be cut off

  574. from God

  575. for eternity

  576. to see that

  577. be the case.

  578. Is this true

  579. of anybody

  580. in this room?

  581. 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 9 chapter mention

  582. chapter 9.

  583. Turn to this one

  584. with me.

  585. 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 9 chapter mention

  586. chapter 9.

  587. 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 9 chapter mention

  588. chapter 9.

  589. Verse 19.

  590. Paul gives up

  591. his liberty,

  592. puts aside

  593. some of the

  594. things that

  595. he has been

  596. granted access

  597. to in the

  598. gospel of grace

  599. for the sake

  600. of others.

  601. He says,

  602. For though I

  603. am free from

  604. all,

  605. this is 9,

  606. 19,

  607. I have made

  608. myself a servant

  609. to all,

  610. that I might

  611. win more of

  612. them.

  613. To the Jews

  614. I became as a

  615. Jew in order

  616. to win Jews.

  617. To those under

  618. the law I became

  619. as one under

  620. the law,

  621. though not

  622. being myself

  623. under the law,

  624. that I might

  625. win those

  626. under the law.

  627. To those outside

  628. the law I became

  629. as one outside

  630. the law,

  631. not being outside

  632. the law of God,

  633. but under the

  634. law of Christ,

  635. that I might

  636. win those

  637. outside the law.

  638. To the weak I

  639. became weak,

  640. that I might

  641. win the weak.

  642. I become all

  643. things to all

  644. people,

  645. that by all

  646. means I might

  647. save some.

  648. I do it all

  649. for the sake

  650. of the gospel,

  651. that I may

  652. share with

  653. them in its

  654. blessings.

  655. Now there is

  656. so much that

  657. could be said

  658. about becoming

  659. all things

  660. to all people

  661. and what that

  662. means in our

  663. day-to-day living.

  664. But the emphasis

  665. that I want you

  666. to get from here

  667. is how desperately

  668. he wants to see

  669. people come into

  670. the kingdom,

  671. that he might

  672. share with them

  673. in its blessings.

  674. For the sake

  675. of his joy,

  676. he puts aside

  677. trivial things,

  678. things that are

  679. not that important,

  680. the way in which

  681. he conducts himself,

  682. what he eats,

  683. what he drinks,

  684. because he so

  685. wants to enjoy

  686. the blessing

  687. of the gospel.

  688. Back up a few

  689. verses.

  690. 1 Corinthians 9,

  691. 16.

  692. Paul says,

  693. For if I preach

  694. the gospel,

  695. that gives me

  696. no ground

  697. for boasting.

  698. I have no

  699. space in this

  700. to say I am

  701. a preacher of

  702. the gospel.

  703. Good for me.

  704. He says,

  705. For necessity

  706. is laid upon me.

  707. Woe to me

  708. if I do not

  709. preach the gospel.

  710. Is this the

  711. mind that we

  712. have within us?

  713. That we must

  714. preach the gospel.

  715. That there is a

  716. draw on our

  717. hearts because

  718. we so love

  719. Jesus that we

  720. love the things

  721. that he loves.

  722. That we recognize

  723. that his great

  724. work in this world

  725. is about the

  726. building of his

  727. church.

  728. The salvation of

  729. souls that they

  730. might come in

  731. and be discipled,

  732. that they might

  733. sing his praises

  734. forever.

  735. We sang a song

  736. and we said

  737. again and again

  738. and again,

  739. Hallelujah,

  740. which is a

  741. Cobb Brown Hebrew

  742. phrase,

  743. which means

  744. it's a command,

  745. come and

  746. praise my

  747. God with me.

  748. That's what that

  749. phrasing means.

  750. And that is the

  751. hallelujah of our

  752. life is that we

  753. go and advance

  754. the gospel.

  755. We say to people,

  756. come and praise

  757. your God,

  758. the God that

  759. created you,

  760. come back into

  761. a right relationship

  762. with him and

  763. praise him with

  764. me.

  765. He is worthy of

  766. all honor and

  767. all praise.

  768. We want people

  769. as believers to

  770. sing his praises

  771. in greater and

  772. higher degree,

  773. at least I

  774. hope.

  775. That we do.

  776. We must

  777. preach the

  778. gospel.

  779. So do you

  780. sow seed?

  781. Do you sow

  782. the word at

  783. all?

  784. And if you do,

  785. how do you

  786. sow the seed?

  787. Because the

  788. picture painted

  789. for us here

  790. would have been

  791. a very liberal

  792. sowing of the

  793. seed.

  794. There was

  795. plenty of

  796. seed,

  797. so much

  798. seed in

  799. fact that

  800. it was okay

  801. that some

  802. of it fell

  803. on the

  804. path.

  805. It wasn't

  806. all that

  807. important that

  808. every bit of

  809. seed made

  810. it onto

  811. the field,

  812. but that

  813. the seed

  814. was being

  815. cast in

  816. wide and

  817. in liberal

  818. ways.

  819. Being

  820. sown out

  821. so generously

  822. because we

  823. so desire

  824. to see

  825. a yield.

  826. We want

  827. to find

  828. the good

  829. soil.

  830. We want

  831. the word

  832. to fall

  833. on the

  834. good soil

  835. that it

  836. will bring

  837. forth fruit,

  838. that there

  839. will be a

  840. yield,

  841. a harvest

  842. to be had

  843. at the

  844. right time.

  845. I think

  846. that many

  847. of us walk

  848. around rather

  849. than with

  850. large bags

  851. full of

  852. seed that

  853. we sow

  854. and we

  855. sow

  856. and we

  857. sow

  858. and we

  859. sow.

  860. We have

  861. maybe a

  862. couple little

  863. seeds we

  864. carry around

  865. in our

  866. pocket and

  867. we're maybe

  868. looking for

  869. that perfect

  870. opportunity.

  871. Maybe when

  872. I spot some

  873. good soil and

  874. I'm confident

  875. it's good

  876. soil,

  877. I've only got

  878. a couple

  879. of seeds so

  880. I don't want

  881. to put a

  882. seed in any

  883. kind of bad

  884. soil,

  885. I'll put

  886. the seed in

  887. the good

  888. soil.

  889. And I'll

  890. say I'm

  891. a Christian,

  892. I'm following

  893. Jesus,

  894. I know I'm

  895. supposed to

  896. do this

  897. thing.

  898. Rather than

  899. recognizing that

  900. we have the

  901. time and

  902. the ability,

  903. the grace of

  904. God given

  905. to us,

  906. that we

  907. would sow

  908. and sow

  909. and sow

  910. and sow

  911. that we

  912. would plant

  913. the word

  914. everywhere.

  915. You want

  916. to know how

  917. you figure

  918. out where

  919. the good

  920. soil is?

  921. You sow

  922. the seed

  923. everywhere

  924. and you

  925. see where

  926. the good

  927. plants come

  928. up that

  929. stick around

  930. and yield

  931. fruit.

  932. That's how

  933. you know.

  934. How do we

  935. see where the

  936. spirit's at

  937. work,

  938. plowing the

  939. field,

  940. preparing the

  941. soil?

  942. That's not

  943. our work,

  944. that's his

  945. work.

  946. How do we

  947. know where

  948. that's

  949. happening?

  950. We sow

  951. seed and

  952. we see

  953. what happens

  954. with the

  955. seed.

  956. So we

  957. have to

  958. be sowing.

  959. We must

  960. share the

  961. gospel.

  962. We must

  963. go and

  964. go and

  965. go and

  966. go.

  967. In verse

  968. 30 of

  969. chapter 4 of

  970. Mark,

  971. Jesus says,

  972. with what can

  973. we compare

  974. the kingdom

  975. of God or

  976. what parable

  977. shall we use

  978. for it?

  979. He tells

  980. us about

  981. this grain

  982. of mustard

  983. seed,

  984. which is

  985. incredibly

  986. tiny.

  987. A grain

  988. of mustard

  989. seed is

  990. a speck.

  991. It's so

  992. easy.

  993. If I had

  994. one in

  995. my hand

  996. and I

  997. breathed on

  998. it, it

  999. would blow

  1000. off my

  1001. hand and

  1002. we would

  1003. totally lose

  1004. it in

  1005. this room.

  1006. A tiny

  1007. little thing,

  1008. but it grows

  1009. up into

  1010. something that

  1011. is large

  1012. in the

  1013. garden.

  1014. It has a

  1015. great deal

  1016. of usefulness.

  1017. And what

  1018. he's saying

  1019. here is

  1020. that our

  1021. little sharing,

  1022. it seems

  1023. so insignificant

  1024. sometimes,

  1025. it feels

  1026. often pointless.

  1027. Have you

  1028. had those

  1029. gospel

  1030. conversations

  1031. with somebody

  1032. where you

  1033. just feel

  1034. like you're

  1035. beating your

  1036. head against

  1037. the brick

  1038. wall trying

  1039. to talk

  1040. to them,

  1041. and you

  1042. just go,

  1043. I just

  1044. don't

  1045. understand

  1046. how it

  1047. is that

  1048. God

  1049. intends to

  1050. use me

  1051. to advance

  1052. this kingdom.

  1053. It seems

  1054. totally

  1055. insignificant.

  1056. This is

  1057. what he's

  1058. trying to

  1059. say.

  1060. But guess

  1061. what?

  1062. When it's

  1063. planted in

  1064. good soil,

  1065. it yields

  1066. a wonderful

  1067. bush that

  1068. has great

  1069. usefulness in

  1070. the kingdom

  1071. of God.

  1072. Paul says

  1073. in 1 Corinthians

  1074. 3,

  1075. 5-9,

  1076. what then

  1077. is Apollos

  1078. who was a

  1079. disciple?

  1080. What is

  1081. Paul?

  1082. Servants

  1083. through whom

  1084. you believed

  1085. as the

  1086. Lord assigned

  1087. to each.

  1088. I planted,

  1089. Apollos

  1090. watered,

  1091. but God

  1092. gave the

  1093. growth.

  1094. So neither

  1095. he who

  1096. plants nor

  1097. he who

  1098. waters is

  1099. anything,

  1100. but only

  1101. God who

  1102. gives the

  1103. growth.

  1104. He who

  1105. plants and

  1106. he who

  1107. waters are

  1108. one,

  1109. and each

  1110. will receive

  1111. his wages

  1112. according to

  1113. his labor.

  1114. For we are

  1115. God's fellow

  1116. workers.

  1117. You are

  1118. God's

  1119. field,

  1120. God's

  1121. building.

  1122. So our

  1123. responsibility in

  1124. this, as you

  1125. can see Paul

  1126. saying,

  1127. Paul is

  1128. saying that

  1129. I planted.

  1130. Another

  1131. disciple came

  1132. along and

  1133. watered,

  1134. but ultimately

  1135. and finally

  1136. God gave

  1137. the growth.

  1138. It is his

  1139. kingdom and

  1140. we have a

  1141. part to

  1142. play in

  1143. this.

  1144. He's

  1145. invited us

  1146. into his

  1147. work to

  1148. sow the

  1149. seed, to

  1150. sow the

  1151. word of

  1152. the gospel

  1153. liberally

  1154. everywhere we

  1155. go.

  1156. We must

  1157. share the

  1158. gospel.

  1159. Secondly, we

  1160. must share the

  1161. gospel regularly.

  1162. It must

  1163. become a

  1164. natural part

  1165. of our

  1166. life and

  1167. our living.

  1168. There's a

  1169. parable again

  1170. that we read

  1171. together,

  1172. chapter 4,

  1173. verse 26

  1174. through 29.

  1175. The kingdom

  1176. of God is

  1177. if a man

  1178. should scatter

  1179. seed on the

  1180. ground.

  1181. Here again

  1182. we see the

  1183. scattering of

  1184. seed.

  1185. He sleeps

  1186. and rises

  1187. night and

  1188. day and

  1189. the seed

  1190. sprouts and

  1191. grows.

  1192. He knows

  1193. not how.

  1194. He doesn't

  1195. understand how

  1196. it is that

  1197. the seed takes

  1198. any effect

  1199. in anybody's

  1200. life.

  1201. There's a

  1202. great mystery

  1203. of the

  1204. gospel that

  1205. the spirit

  1206. of God

  1207. comes into

  1208. people and

  1209. changes their

  1210. hearts,

  1211. completely

  1212. changes their

  1213. affections,

  1214. causes them

  1215. to do a

  1216. 180 from

  1217. being an

  1218. enemy of

  1219. God to

  1220. being a

  1221. friend of

  1222. God.

  1223. Causes them

  1224. to be

  1225. eternally

  1226. condemned

  1227. before him

  1228. to being

  1229. justified

  1230. before him

  1231. in Christ.

  1232. It's

  1233. incredible

  1234. miracle is

  1235. what he's

  1236. communicating

  1237. to himself.

  1238. The earth

  1239. produces by

  1240. itself,

  1241. the blade,

  1242. the ear.

  1243. We get the

  1244. science behind

  1245. this.

  1246. They certainly

  1247. didn't.

  1248. God's work

  1249. in bringing

  1250. about the

  1251. harvest.

  1252. And every

  1253. year when the

  1254. grain is ripe,

  1255. once he puts

  1256. in the

  1257. cycle because

  1258. the harvest

  1259. has come,

  1260. and this is

  1261. something that

  1262. would have

  1263. happened for

  1264. this person

  1265. every year,

  1266. this regular

  1267. sowing,

  1268. this regular

  1269. sowing,

  1270. this reaping,

  1271. seeing the

  1272. growth,

  1273. reaping the

  1274. reward,

  1275. we are to

  1276. share the

  1277. gospel regularly.

  1278. In the past

  1279. two weeks I've

  1280. shared with you

  1281. on a white

  1282. board,

  1283. we're going to

  1284. put it up on

  1285. the screen

  1286. today because

  1287. this is all I

  1288. needed on the

  1289. screen,

  1290. on the board,

  1291. that this

  1292. tri-county area

  1293. that we live in,

  1294. where our church

  1295. property is,

  1296. is pretty

  1297. equilaterally located

  1298. between Dawsonville

  1299. and Dahlonega and

  1300. Gainesville.

  1301. So in those three

  1302. counties, Hall,

  1303. Lumpkin, Dawson

  1304. counties, there's

  1305. approximately 232,000

  1306. people.

  1307. And I've shared

  1308. with you that the

  1309. Chattahoochee Baptist

  1310. Association estimates

  1311. that 80% of that

  1312. population is

  1313. unchurched.

  1314. It's a fairly loose

  1315. definition, the 20%,

  1316. they don't give a

  1317. denominational, not

  1318. necessarily a

  1319. Georgia Baptist

  1320. church, Southern

  1321. Baptist in

  1322. denomination, but

  1323. 80% unchurched,

  1324. that's 185,600

  1325. people.

1326. This is kind of a

  1327. staggering number,

  1328. 185,600 people,

  1329. just in this area,

  1330. right here where we

  1331. live.

  1332. That if we're

  1333. optimistic as I

  1334. think they are in

  1335. this estimation,

  1336. because we know

  1337. that if somebody is

  1338. in a church, it

  1339. doesn't necessarily

  1340. mean that they're a

  1341. disciple of Jesus

  1342. Christ, but if we

1343. just say this is the

  1344. lost population

  1345. around us, this is

  1346. a staggering,

  1347. staggering number,

  1348. beloved, that

  1349. leaves 46,400

  1350. churched.

  1351. So let's again be

  1352. optimistic and let's

  1353. say that all of

  1354. those people are in

  1355. fact disciples of

  1356. Jesus Christ.

  1357. 46,400 people who

  1358. claim the name of

  1359. Jesus Christ.

1360. And what I say to

  1361. you is that if

  1362. these 46,400 were

  1363. actively involved in

  1364. sowing seed, we

  1365. would be reaping a

  1366. harvest.

  1367. That seed would be

  1368. falling on good

  1369. soil.

  1370. Now something for

1371. us to know and to

  1372. remember about these

  1373. parables is that

  1374. Jesus is also trying

  1375. to communicate to

  1376. them that some

  1377. people will not

  1378. receive the word.

  1379. don't become

  1380. discouraged by that.

  1381. There are going to

  1382. be bad soils.

  1383. Soils that just

  1384. will not reap

  1385. harvest.

  1386. At least now, maybe

  1387. a bad soil becomes a

  1388. good soil as the

  1389. plowing work of the

  1390. spirit works in their

  1391. life.

  1392. But we should be

  1393. reaping a harvest

  1394. if we're sowing, if

  1395. we're finding the good

  1396. soil and planting the

  1397. word in it.

  1398. Now, the current U.S.

  1399. mortality rate, just

1400. to make this, give us

  1401. an eternal perspective

1402. on this, I mean, all

  1403. of these people, again,

  1404. assuming 185,600 people

  1405. are not saved, they're

  1406. not experiencing the

1407. joy of the gospel here

  1408. and now, they're

  1409. separated from God

  1410. here and now.

  1411. These things are

  1412. horrible, but for

  1413. eternity they will be

  1414. separated if they

  1415. don't respond in faith

  1416. to the gospel of

  1417. Christ.

  1418. The current U.S.

  1419. mortality rate means

  1420. that 1,500 of those

  1421. 185,600 will die this

  1422. year.

  1423. 1,500 of those

  1424. people will die,

  1425. presuming that they're

  1426. not saved, that they

  1427. have not yet been

  1428. saved from their sin,

  1429. they are still enemies

1430. of God, they are doomed

  1431. to eternal damnation.

  1432. This should break our

  1433. hearts.

1434. This should press us to

1435. the point where Paul is

1436. at, where we would say,

  1437. I wish that I would be

1438. cut off, that I would be

1439. cursed, if just some of

  1440. these would come to

  1441. faith.

  1442. I'm willing to become

  1443. all things to all

  1444. people, I'm willing to

1445. lay aside all of my

  1446. desires, all of my

  1447. wishes, because I know

  1448. Jesus cares about

  1449. these people.

1450. I know that he wants

  1451. them to hear the

  1452. gospel of Jesus

  1453. Christ, that he wants

  1454. to give them opportunity

1455. to respond in faith to

1456. the good news of the

  1457. gospel.

  1458. I believe that the

  1459. life, death, and

  1460. resurrection of Christ

  1461. has great power.

1462. I said to you two weeks

1463. ago that I think we

  1464. often operate under the

  1465. assumption that God

  1466. doesn't want to save

  1467. people.

  1468. Our actions at least

  1469. seem to reflect that,

  1470. rather than operating

  1471. under the assumption

  1472. that he does.

  1473. He has good, eternal,

  1474. loving plans for the

1475. world around us, and I

1476. so want our church to be

  1477. involved in that.

1478. Now, Paul, in speaking of

  1479. the ministry of

  1480. reconciliation that God

1481. has given us in Christ,

  1482. said in 2 Corinthians 5

1483. 16, we regard no one

  1484. according to the flesh.

1485. And so keep this in mind

1486. as you leave this place,

1487. you go out into the world

1488. around you, you go grab

  1489. some lunch.

1490. We ought not be looking at

  1491. people as temporal things.

  1492. Everything else in this

1493. world you can view as

1494. temporal, because it is for

  1495. sure.

  1496. But people themselves have

  1497. eternal souls.

1498. Do not regard any of them

  1499. according to flesh.

  1500. And they're following one

  1501. of two ways.

  1502. They're following God and

  1503. obedience to him.

  1504. They're found in him.

  1505. They've been saved.

  1506. They will one day

  1507. eternally rejoice with him

1508. in glory, or they're not.

1509. And their end is destruction.

1510. And they need the gospel.

1511. Now, I know that often

  1512. statistics can be really

  1513. challenging.

  1514. I mean, this is just a

1515. number on a screen, right?

  1516. It's zeros and ones on a

  1517. computer that projected an

1518. image up onto a screen.

  1519. Much different than reality.

1520. And so, you need to think of

1521. people that you know that are

  1522. in this category.

  1523. Real human souls.

  1524. Not simply a digit on a

  1525. screen together, but there's

  1526. a reality to this.

1527. And there are people passing

1528. all the time around us.

  1529. There are people currently

1530. separated from God that need

  1531. to know him.

1532. They need to be made right

  1533. again with him.

1534. And so we're going to take a

  1535. break from the sermon.

1536. When you guys all sat down,

1537. there was a piece of paper,

  1538. mostly blank.

1539. So, one verse at the top of it,

1540. and I want you to get it out.

1541. I know many of you bring

1542. paper with you on Sunday

  1543. mornings, and that's good.

1544. I encourage you to be an

  1545. active listener and take

  1546. notes.

  1547. But I don't want any excuses

  1548. this morning.

1549. So, you all have paper.

1550. And right now, if you need a

1551. pen, I want you to raise your

  1552. hand.

1553. We have got pens galore.

  1554. Here we go.

  1555. They're coming at you.

1556. You might be ready to catch

  1557. them.

1558. And the guys are going to

1559. make their way around with a

1560. pen, and I'm going to tell you

1561. what we're going to do with

  1562. these.

1563. And what we're going to do,

1564. again, may seem trite to you.

  1565. I don't care.

1566. I want you to do it anyway.

1567. Because I think that we too

1568. often place ourselves above some

1569. kind of exercise and practice

1570. like this, and therefore we do

  1571. just nothing at all.

1572. There are 15 lines on this piece of

  1573. paper.

1574. After the fact, after I had

1575. printed all these up, I did a

1576. little bit of math, and I was just

  1577. curious, really.

  1578. And I took this 46,400 churched

  1579. people, right?

1580. The remainder above and beyond

  1581. that, this 46,400.

1582. And I just did a little math, and I

1583. just said, if we could just get 25% of

1584. these people, just 25% of that

1585. population to actively be sharing the

  1586. gospel with their neighbors,

  1587. relatives, friends, coworkers, etc.

1588. All the people that run in their

1589. spheres of influence that are not

  1590. followers of Christ.

1591. Then the responsibility of each

1592. individual, and I know that this is

1593. kind of a vacuum number, I get that

1594. there's a lot of overlaps in those

1595. spheres, but provided they were

1596. evenly spread out across these

1597. three counties, would be 16 people.

  1598. So I wish I'd given you 16 lines,

  1599. but I gave you 15.

1600. Feel free to use the margin at the

1601. bottom if you would like.

1602. So we're going to take a break,

  1603. just a five-minute break.

1604. We've got one song that's going to

1605. get played over the speakers, and I

1606. want you to do your very best to

  1607. list 15 people that you don't

1608. believe are followers of Jesus

  1609. Christ, right?

1610. It's kind of tough to tell in our

  1611. culture sometimes, because everyone

1612. seems to say they are.

1613. People that you don't think are

  1614. followers of Jesus Christ.

1615. And it could be as simple as a girl

1616. with blonde hair at Subway.

1617. Like, you may not know her name, but

1618. maybe you need to figure out what her

  1619. name is.

1620. You may have specific people that are

  1621. coming to your mind.

1622. I want you to make a list, if you can,

1623. in this amount of time, do your very,

1624. very best to make a list of 15 people

1625. that you know, your sphere, right?

  1626. That you personally encounter

1627. throughout the week, that you may see

1628. this coming week, that are not

1629. disciples of Jesus Christ, as far as

  1630. you may know.

1631. And then we'll get back together in

  1632. just a few minutes.

1633. So if you bring that music up, guys,

  1634. in about five minutes.

  1635. All right.

1636. Now, if you're astute at all, let me

1637. first say that there are 20 lines.

  1638. Because I had 15 lines, and I made

1639. the font size bigger to give you more

1640. space to write, and it bumped the lines

  1641. up.

1642. So I started counting mine.

1643. I thought, my gosh, oh, okay, the lines.

1644. Oh, the lines are all messed up.

1645. Okay, so there are 20 lines.

1646. And good for you if you fill them all up.

1647. Now, I'm just going to assume, and maybe

1648. a lot of you couldn't quite get to 15 on

  1649. your sheet of paper.

1650. But if there are that many, there are a

1651. lot of souls represented by the people

1652. in this room, the influences that you

1653. have, the people that you get to be

1654. around and give gospel proclamation to.

1655. I think it's also probably pretty safe

1656. to presume that there's not a lot of

  1657. overlap.

1658. A lot of you are college students.

1659. You may know some of the same people.

1660. As a friend group, you may be ministering

1661. and loving on some of the same people.

1662. But there's probably not a lot of

  1663. overlap.

1664. What a massive opportunity to be going

1665. and to be pressing and to be sharing.

1666. Now, if you are not a person that likes

1667. this kind of stuff, you don't like it

1668. when I start talking about statistics.

1669. Let me read something to you by Charles

1670. Spurgeon in a book he wrote called

  1671. The Soul Winner.

  1672. He said,

1673. I am not among those who decry statistics,

1674. nor do I consider that they are productive

1675. of all manner of evil.

1676. For they do much good if they are accurate

1677. and if men use them lawfully.

1678. It is a good thing for people to see

1679. the nakedness of the land which statistics

  1680. of decrease.

1681. That they may have been driven on their

1682. knees before the Lord to seek prosperity.

1683. And on the other hand,

1684. it is by no means an evil thing for workers

1685. to be encouraged by having some account

1686. of results set before them.

1687. We should see the failing

1688. as well as be encouraged

  1689. by the success.

1690. I should be very sorry

1691. if the practice of adding up

  1692. and deducting

1693. and giving in the net result

  1694. were to be abandoned.

1695. For it must be right to know

  1696. our numerical condition.

  1697. It has been noticed

1698. that those who object to the process

  1699. are often brethren

  1700. whose unsatisfactory reports

  1701. should somewhat humiliate them.

1702. This is not always so,

1703. but it is suspiciously frequent.

1704. People who don't want to talk about numbers,

1705. and I want to talk about growth,

  1706. typically are those

1707. who would be very embarrassed

  1708. if they did.

1709. This is what he is suggesting to us.

1710. So, what do I want you to do

  1711. with this little sheet?

1712. You know, it is conveniently

1713. the size of your Bible,

  1714. likely,

1715. will fit very conveniently in there.

  1716. Firstly,

1717. begin to pray for the people

  1718. on this sheet.

1719. Intercessory prayer is number one.

  1720. Pray for them.

1721. Ask that God will be working

  1722. in their hearts.

1723. Ask that He would be plowing

  1724. the soil

  1725. so that good seed

  1726. can land on it.

  1727. It's very possible

1728. that some of these people

  1729. may receive the word

  1730. from somebody else,

1731. but be in the process

  1732. of praying for them.

1733. Ask that God would save

  1734. the souls

1735. of the people on your sheet.

  1736. Secondly,

  1737. look for opportunities

  1738. to love them sacrificially.

  1739. Right?

  1740. As circumstances arise,

  1741. be available for people.

  1742. Go that extra step

  1743. for people.

  1744. Show people

1745. that you care about them.

  1746. There are opportunities

  1747. abound to step

  1748. into somebody's life

  1749. and be a part

  1750. of the hurt

  1751. that's going on

  1752. in the world.

  1753. As the pastor

  1754. of this church,

  1755. let me tell you

  1756. that there are hurts

  1757. in our church.

  1758. And this extends

  1759. out beyond these walls.

  1760. Right?

  1761. This world is sin-infected.

  1762. We are all hurting

  1763. because of the rampant

  1764. nature of sin

  1765. in this world.

  1766. I jokingly ask people

  1767. all the time,

  1768. people talk about

  1769. health issues

  1770. and things like that.

  1771. I say,

  1772. you know why, right?

  1773. And they go,

  1774. no, I go, sin?

  1775. Right?

  1776. That's the thing

  1777. that's messed everything up

  1778. in this world.

  1779. Anything that goes poorly,

  1780. it's because of sin.

  1781. And it's running rampant.

  1782. So there's all kinds

  1783. of opportunities

  1784. to come alongside people

  1785. and love on people.

  1786. I tell you,

  1787. I can't do it all myself.

  1788. Right?

  1789. I need your help.

1790. You've got to be with people.

1791. You've got to be out there

  1792. in the community

  1793. loving them sacrificially

  1794. as the circumstances arise.

  1795. And thirdly,

  1796. commit to proclaiming

  1797. the gospel

  1798. to three people

  1799. on this list

1800. in the next two weeks.

1801. I want you to make

  1802. a star,

  1803. an asterisk,

  1804. a smiley face,

  1805. a swirly thing.

  1806. I don't care.

1807. Whatever you want to make,

1808. I want you to put next

1809. to three people on this,

1810. three people that you believe

  1811. that you'll be able

  1812. to share,

  1813. make gospel proclamation

1814. to in the next two weeks.

  1815. Right?

  1816. It's a simple thing.

  1817. Don't ask their permission

  1818. to do it.

  1819. Say, hey,

  1820. I have something

1821. I want to tell you

  1822. that's really important

  1823. and preach the gospel

  1824. to them.

1825. And I'm going to tell you

  1826. a little bit more

1827. about that in a moment.

  1828. But let's do that.

  1829. Three people

1830. over the next two weeks.

  1831. If you're part of

  1832. a community outreach group,

  1833. share it with them.

  1834. If you're not,

  1835. get involved with one.

  1836. If you're a guest

  1837. with us today,

  1838. find someone

  1839. back where you are,

  1840. a group of people

  1841. that you can be

  1842. accountable to doing this.

  1843. And be flexible.

  1844. Right?

  1845. You might find that

  1846. through the process

  1847. of loving people

  1848. sacrificially

  1849. as circumstances arise,

1850. that your plan may change.

  1851. And that is good

  1852. and fine.

1853. As the Spirit of God

  1854. is moving

  1855. and working

  1856. in the lives

  1857. of these people,

  1858. be willing

  1859. to be flexible

  1860. and to make

  1861. responses to it.

  1862. Now,

  1863. do I expect

  1864. that simply because

  1865. we get active

  1866. doing some things

  1867. like this

  1868. that people

  1869. are necessarily

  1870. going to come

  1871. to faith in Christ?

  1872. No.

  1873. I don't.

1874. I think that the fact

  1875. that we don't see

  1876. more people

1877. coming to faith in Christ

  1878. is indicative

  1879. that we don't do

  1880. this like we should.

  1881. I think that's very true

  1882. of our congregation.

  1883. That we're not going

  1884. and sharing the gospel

1885. the way we ought to.

1886. But God has at times

  1887. in history

  1888. withheld blessing

  1889. and we should be

  1890. very aware of this.

  1891. Right?

1892. There are going to be

  1893. different types of soil.

  1894. Some of these people,

1895. you're going to be faithful,

1896. you're going to get in there,

1897. you're going to do the thing

1898. that you're supposed to do,

1899. and they're going to reject you.

1900. They're going to laugh at you.

  1901. Right?

1902. They're going to mock at you.

1903. They're just going to think

  1904. you're kind of nutty.

1905. Or they may just not really care

  1906. at all.

1907. This is going to happen.

1908. And every time I think about this

  1909. and I experience this,

  1910. I'm always drawn

1911. to the life of Jeremiah

  1912. who was a prophet,

1913. one of the major prophets,

1914. prophesied for a very long time,

  1915. for decades.

1916. And it's presumed that he had,

1917. depending on who you hear say,

1918. that he had nobody turn back

1919. to the ways of God

  1920. in his ministry.

  1921. Some people say won.

  1922. Guys, maybe he did.

1923. The text gives us some clue to that.

1924. He won in all of this time

1925. that he was doing this.

  1926. And he was hated.

1927. He was always telling people

  1928. about the destruction

1929. that was going to come.

1930. If they continued in their ways,

1931. this destruction was coming on them.

  1932. Nobody liked Jeremiah.

  1933. And in chapter 20,

  1934. he laments this.

  1935. Chapter 20, verse 7,

  1936. he says,

  1937. Oh Lord,

  1938. you have deceived me

  1939. and I was deceived.

1940. You are stronger than I

  1941. and you have prevailed.

  1942. I have become a laughingstock

  1943. all the day.

  1944. Everyone mocks me.

  1945. For whenever I speak,

  1946. I cry out,

  1947. I shout,

  1948. violence and destruction.

1949. For the word of the Lord

  1950. has become for me

  1951. a reproach and derision

  1952. all day long.

  1953. God, you tricked me.

  1954. You said to me,

  1955. if I follow you,

1956. I'm going to do great things

  1957. with you.

  1958. Fooled, right?

  1959. I'm a total laughingstock.

  1960. I'm always telling people

  1961. bad news.

  1962. In verse 9,

  1963. he says,

  1964. If I say,

1965. I will not mention him

  1966. or speak any more

  1967. in his name,

1968. there is in my heart,

  1969. as it were,

  1970. a burning fire

1971. shut up in my bones

  1972. and I am weary

  1973. with holding it in

  1974. and I cannot.

  1975. The word of God

  1976. to Jeremiah

1977. was so powerful in him

1978. that he had to share it.

  1979. Even though he had

  1980. these emotions of,

  1981. Oh, I've been tricked.

1982. What a path to walk in.

  1983. It's miserable.

1984. But yet God had given him

1985. a word to give to his people

1986. and he had to share it.

1987. So we ought to be

  1988. in that position.

1989. If people are not responding

  1990. in faith to Christ

  1991. by our work,

1992. we ought to still be

  1993. influenced in this way.

  1994. Pressing on.

  1995. Pushing.

  1996. Pushing.

  1997. Pushing.

  1998. Intercessory prayer.

  1999. Sacrificial love.

  2000. Gospel proclamation.

  2001. I believe God

  2002. will reward our efforts.

  2003. We'll see.

  2004. But if he doesn't,

2005. if he delays the blessing

  2006. of our efforts,

2007. we ought to still work

  2008. at this very thing.

2009. So we must share the gospel.

2010. We must share the gospel

  2011. regularly

  2012. and we must share

  2013. the gospel rightly.

  2014. We must share

  2015. the gospel rightly.

2016. Alright, we're going to scoot.

  2017. You ready?

2018. We're running out of time.

  2019. Verse 14 of Mark chapter 4

    Mark 4 chapter mention

  2020. says,

2021. The sower sows the word.

2022. The good soil bears good fruit.

2023. So the word brings forth

  2024. the word.

  2025. More proclamation.

  2026. More seed planting.

2027. But in the doing of this,

2028. we must preach the whole gospel.

2029. We must preach the whole gospel.

2030. And I hate that there's some kind

2031. of a qualifier placed on gospel.

  2032. We should say gospel

  2033. and everybody knows exactly

  2034. what we're talking about.

  2035. The word simply means

  2036. good news.

2037. We understand it to be

  2038. the good news

  2039. of Jesus Christ.

  2040. But there's this

  2041. cultural press

2042. to say the whole gospel

  2043. because so often

  2044. people are being preached

  2045. the quote-unquote

  2046. gospel

  2047. in an abbreviated form.

  2048. And that is primarily

  2049. across our nation

  2050. this morning

  2051. even happening

  2052. as people are neutering

  2053. the gospel

  2054. because they're taking out

  2055. the judgment of God

  2056. for sin.

  2057. They're teaching simply

  2058. that God is love

2059. which He most certainly is

  2060. but they're neglecting

  2061. the fact that God

2062. is also full of wrath

  2063. and vengeance

  2064. against His enemies.

  2065. They're saying that

2066. we need to be saved

  2067. from something

  2068. but what?

  2069. What exactly

2070. are we being saved from?

  2071. Or being taught

  2072. that there's a God-sized hole

2073. in the middle of our hearts

2074. that only He can fill.

  2075. Right?

  2076. That our life

  2077. will just be better.

  2078. We can experience

  2079. our best life now

  2080. if we simply add

2081. this little thing called Jesus

  2082. to the mix

  2083. of what's going on.

  2084. And I'll tell you

2085. that this is a major reason

2086. that there is rocky soil.

  2087. That they see

  2088. this little spring up

  2089. people go

  2090. that sounds fantastic.

  2091. Right?

2092. Place my faith in Jesus Christ

2093. and things are going to get

  2094. a little bit better

  2095. and then they don't.

  2096. They get worse.

  2097. Right?

2098. The sun of tribulation comes

2099. and those people fade away.

  2100. This is happening

  2101. in such massive

  2102. staggering degree.

  2103. False conversion

  2104. after false conversion

  2105. after false conversion

  2106. because the gospel itself

  2107. is not preached.

  2108. Some little trite version

  2109. of it is preached.

  2110. But not...

  2111. That's the third time

  2112. I've used that word

  2113. this morning.

  2114. Trite.

  2115. They're not being told

2116. of the wrath to come.

  2117. People are not fleeing

2118. from the destruction of God

2119. to the salvation of God.

  2120. Right?

  2121. We are saved

  2122. from God

  2123. by God

  2124. to God.

  2125. Those are all

  2126. important elements

  2127. of good gospel

  2128. presentation.

  2129. A guy,

  2130. a street evangelist

2131. by the name of Ray Comfort

  2132. wrote a book called

2133. The Way of the Master.

2134. You may or may not

  2135. be familiar with him.

2136. Let me just give you

  2137. a couple of antidotes

  2138. from this book

  2139. about the nature

2140. of this type of teaching,

  2141. this neutered version

  2142. of the gospel.

  2143. In Cleveland, Ohio,

  2144. an inner city outreach

  2145. brought 400 decisions.

  2146. The rejoicing no doubt

  2147. tapered off

  2148. when workers involved

  2149. in a follow-up campaign

  2150. couldn't find

  2151. a single one

  2152. of the 400

  2153. who had supposedly

  2154. made a decision.

  2155. In 1991,

2156. organizer of a Salt Lake City

  2157. concert encouraged

  2158. follow-up.

  2159. They said

  2160. less than 5%

  2161. of those who respond

  2162. to an altar call

  2163. during a public crusade

2164. are living a Christian life

  2165. one year later.

  2166. A pastor in Boulder,

  2167. Colorado,

2168. sent a team to Russia

  2169. in 1991

  2170. and obtained

  2171. 2,500 decisions.

  2172. The next year,

  2173. the team found

  2174. only 30

  2175. continuing in their faith.

  2176. That's a retention rate

  2177. of 1.2%.

  2178. George Barna

  2179. of the Barna Group

  2180. says that the majority

  2181. of people making decisions

  2182. leave the church

2183. in six to eight weeks.

  2184. In Leeds, England,

  2185. a visiting American speaker

  2186. acquired 400 decisions

  2187. for a local church.

  2188. Six weeks later,

2189. only two were still committed

  2190. and they eventually

  2191. fell away.

  2192. It's not a new problem.

  2193. In November 1970,

  2194. a number of churches

  2195. combined for a convention

  2196. in Fort Worth, Texas

  2197. and secured

  2198. 30,000 decisions.

  2199. Six months later,

  2200. the follow-up committee

  2201. could find only 30

  2202. still continuing

  2203. in their faith.

  2204. In Omaha, Nebraska,

  2205. a pastor of a large church

  2206. said he was involved

  2207. with the crusade

  2208. where 1,300 decisions

  2209. were made,

  2210. yet not even

  2211. one convert

  2212. continued

2213. in his or her faith.

  2214. Pastor Dennis Grinnell

  2215. from Auckland, New Zealand,

2216. who has traveled to India

  2217. every year since 1980,

  2218. reported that he saw,

  2219. get this,

2220. he saw 80,000 decision cards

  2221. stacked in a hut

2222. in the city of Raja Mundri,

  2223. the results,

  2224. quote-unquote,

  2225. of past evangelistic crusades.

  2226. But he maintained

2227. that one would be fortunate

2228. to find even 80 Christians

  2229. in the entire city.

  2230. We must preach

  2231. the gospel rightly.

2232. We see this to be the case

2233. with the life of Jesus.

2234. And I'm going to get there

  2235. in a moment

  2236. where he gives

  2237. the law

  2238. to the proud.

  2239. He tells the proud,

  2240. the self-righteous,

  2241. about the judgment

  2242. of God.

  2243. And he gives grace

  2244. to those who are

  2245. already humbled

  2246. by the law

  2247. and by the judgment

  2248. of God.

  2249. So they've already received

  2250. that component

  2251. of the gospel message

  2252. and then he just

  2253. simply gives them

  2254. grace.

2255. Now the law serves us

  2256. in such great ways,

  2257. beloved.

  2258. Galatians 3,

  2259. 23-27 says this,

  2260. Now before faith came,

  2261. we were held captive

  2262. under the law,

  2263. imprisoned

  2264. until the coming faith

  2265. would be revealed.

  2266. So then the law

  2267. was our guardian

  2268. until Christ came

2269. in order that we might

  2270. be justified by faith.

2271. But now that faith has come,

  2272. we are no longer

  2273. under a guardian

  2274. for in Christ Jesus

2275. you are all sons of God

  2276. through faith.

  2277. Now the picture

  2278. that's happening here

  2279. for them is that

  2280. in this day

  2281. a wealthy man

  2282. who had a son

  2283. who was young

  2284. wasn't quite considered

  2285. a son yet.

  2286. While he had some

  2287. lineage there,

  2288. he was important

  2289. to the father.

  2290. He didn't have all

2291. the rights of a son yet.

  2292. And the father

  2293. would hire for him

  2294. what was called

  2295. a guardian,

  2296. a tutor essentially.

  2297. And this man

  2298. raised the child

  2299. until the child

  2300. was ready to be

  2301. a son.

2302. And this is the language

2303. that Paul is using here.

  2304. That's what the law

  2305. is for us.

  2306. It's like a tutor.

  2307. It shows us

  2308. how desperately

2309. we need to be saved.

  2310. It shows us

  2311. all our failings.

  2312. It's the light

  2313. that our dark hearts

  2314. are exposed to

  2315. so that we turn

  2316. to Christ.

  2317. That's why it's

  2318. significant in verse 26

  2319. he says,

  2320. for in Christ Jesus

  2321. you are all sons

  2322. of God

  2323. through faith.

  2324. We've been granted

  2325. sonship.

  2326. Even you ladies,

  2327. you want that

  2328. in this case

  2329. in this cultural

  2330. understanding.

  2331. You want all the

  2332. benefits of being

  2333. a son

  2334. of the living

  2335. God.

  2336. God.

  2337. The proud

  2338. need

  2339. the law.

  2340. Spurgeon in a sermon

  2341. which was particularly

  2342. addressed to preachers

  2343. but certainly applies

  2344. to anybody

  2345. who claims the name

  2346. of Christ

  2347. and will be speaking

  2348. the gospel

  2349. says it is absolutely

  2350. necessary to the

  2351. preaching the gospel

  2352. of Christ

  2353. that men be warned

2354. as to what will happen

  2355. if they continue

  2356. in their sins.

  2357. Ho ho

  2358. sire surgeon

  2359. old English

  2360. kind of for you.

  2361. You are too delicate

  2362. to tell the man

  2363. that he is ill.

  2364. You hope to heal

  2365. the sick

  2366. without their knowing

  2367. it.

  2368. You therefore

  2369. flatter them

  2370. and what happens?

  2371. They laugh at you.

  2372. They dance upon

  2373. their own graves.

  2374. At last

  2375. they die.

  2376. Your delicacy

  2377. is cruelty.

  2378. Your flatteries

  2379. are poisons.

  2380. You are

  2381. a murderer.

  2382. Shall we keep men

  2383. in a fool's

  2384. paradise?

  2385. Shall we lull

  2386. them into soft

  2387. slumbers

  2388. from which they

  2389. will awake

  2390. in hell?

  2391. Are we to become

  2392. helpers

  2393. of their damnation

  2394. by our smooth

  2395. speeches?

2396. In the name of God

  2397. we will not

  2398. is how he finishes

  2399. that particular

  2400. paragraph.

  2401. That preaching

  2402. the gospel wrongly

  2403. gives false

  2404. assurance to people.

  2405. Tells them that

  2406. they just must be

  2407. good enough

  2408. and have a little

  2409. Jesus.

  2410. Walk down an aisle

  2411. fill out a card

  2412. and now

  2413. they're saved.

  2414. I've heard many

  2415. many many times

  2416. in my life

  2417. that if you have

  2418. any doubt

  2419. of your salvation

  2420. simply remember

  2421. the day

  2422. that you responded.

  2423. A lot of people

  2424. will write it in

  2425. the front of their

  2426. Bible.

  2427. There's a spot

  2428. for you if you

  2429. flip to your

  2430. Bible.

  2431. The day that

  2432. you became

  2433. a Christian

  2434. you go look

  2435. at that and

  2436. you go oh

  2437. there's the

  2438. day.

  2439. There's the

  2440. date.

  2441. Right?

  2442. That is not

  2443. how we are

  2444. counted in

  2445. Christ.

  2446. It's by our

  2447. fruit.

  2448. The measure

  2449. of that.

  2450. The fruit

  2451. that we yield.

  2452. That's how we

  2453. know that we're

  2454. good soil.

  2455. How do I know

  2456. that I'm alive?

  2457. I never think

  2458. about my

  2459. birth date.

  2460. I get the

  2461. evidence that

  2462. I'm alive.

  2463. I'm alive.

  2464. I think

  2465. before I am.

  2466. I feel things.

  2467. Experience things.

  2468. I know that I'm

  2469. alive right now.

  2470. Robbie Flockhart

  2471. who was an

  2472. 18th and 19th

  2473. century English

  2474. street preacher

  2475. said you must

  2476. preach the law

  2477. for the gospel

  2478. is a silken

  2479. thread and you

  2480. cannot get it

  2481. into the hearts

  2482. of men unless

  2483. you have made

  2484. a way for it

  2485. with a sharp

  2486. needle.

  2487. The sharp

  2488. needle of the

  2489. law will pull

  2490. the silken thread

  2491. of the gospel

  2492. after it.

  2493. Isn't that good?

  2494. One of my

  2495. very favorite

  2496. missionaries is a

  2497. guy named John G.

  2498. Patton who went

  2499. to a group of

  2500. islands called

  2501. the New Hebrides

  2502. now called

  2503. Vanuatu in the

  2504. South Pacific and

  2505. he went to this

  2506. little island of

  2507. headhunters where

  2508. one convert made

  2509. so this man would

  2510. stand over him

  2511. with a musket

  2512. while he was

  2513. doing his

  2514. studying and this

  2515. man was so bold

  2516. that these

  2517. headhunters would

  2518. come to him

  2519. with loaded

  2520. muskets ready

  2521. to kill him

  2522. and eat him

  2523. and he would

  2524. go up to the

  2525. leader of the

  2526. group and he

  2527. would grab the

  2528. musket in his

  2529. hand and lecture

  2530. him about how

  2531. evil he was

  2532. and the man

  2533. would be so

  2534. ashamed that he

  2535. would go away

  2536. and then a couple

  2537. days later they

  2538. would rebound

  2539. and come back to

  2540. him once again

  2541. and he went

  2542. through this

  2543. massive process

  2544. of this and

  2545. ended up seeing

  2546. many souls come

  2547. to Christ in

  2548. that incredible

  2549. boldness just to

  2550. go and tell people

  2551. that there is a

  2552. standard by which

  2553. they are to live

  2554. and that they've

  2555. transgressed it

  2556. and therefore

  2557. judgment is

  2558. theirs

  2559. so the proud

  2560. need the law

  2561. the humbled

  2562. need grace

  2563. those who have

  2564. already been

  2565. humbled by the

  2566. law by God's

  2567. standard they

  2568. need grace

  2569. we've been potty

  2570. training Judah

  2571. the past couple

  2572. of weeks which

  2573. has been pleasantly

  2574. enjoyable he

  2575. actually has done a

  2576. great great job

  2577. with it all and

  2578. he's very determined

  2579. to get his pants

  2580. off himself and

  2581. his little cute

  2582. little boy

  2583. underwear off

  2584. himself and get

  2585. on his little

  2586. froggy potty and

  2587. make it happen

  2588. and our tone has

  2589. changed with him

  2590. because we had in

  2591. the beginning some

  2592. just some accidents

  2593. right he's just

  2594. neglecting the work

  2595. itself he's playing

  2596. he's not paying

  2597. attention you ask him

2598. if he needs to go

2599. he tells you no and

  2600. then two minutes

  2601. later he's wetting

  2602. himself right and

  2603. your tone with him

  2604. then is not harsh

2605. but you go oh buddy

  2606. like come on man

  2607. like we talked about

2608. it I just asked you

  2609. you gotta pay

  2610. attention we gotta

  2611. go potty now now

  2612. he sometimes waits

  2613. too long the other

  2614. day he got himself

  2615. in there and said

  2616. Judy need my help

  2617. because you could

2618. tell he was in a

  2619. hurry you need my

2620. help he goes no I

2621. got it daddy and he

  2622. goes in there and

  2623. all of a sudden I

  2624. just hear him bawling

2625. and I open the door

  2626. to the bathroom and

  2627. he's standing like

  2628. this just standing in

  2629. a puddle with his

  2630. pants like pushed

2631. down a little bit and

  2632. it just like totally

  2633. but he already was

  2634. broken about it like

2635. he knew that he had

  2636. messed up and he

  2637. didn't need to go

2638. oh man come on I

  2639. just asked you we

2640. tried I asked you if

  2641. you needed help when

2642. he needed it for me to

  2643. go buddy it's okay

  2644. it's okay like it's

  2645. alright you tried and

  2646. that's good right like

  2647. I'm not saying that's

2648. what we do with the

  2649. law but there's a

  2650. there's a tone change

2651. right you get you get

  2652. what I'm driving at

  2653. here there's a tone

  2654. change Martin Luther

  2655. in his commentary on

  2656. Galatians said to the

  2657. person who's broken

  2658. already says send

  2659. Moses away with his

2660. law to those who are

  2661. complacent proud and

  2662. obstinate and in these

  2663. terrors and in this

  2664. anguish lay hold upon

  2665. Christ who was

  2666. crucified and died for

  2667. our sins right when

  2668. you are already broken

2669. when a person comes to

  2670. you recognizing that

  2671. they are already guilty

  2672. before God show them

2673. the mercy of God now I

  2674. had a bunch of

  2675. examples for you and

2676. I'm going to skip over

2677. them but let me just

2678. tell you this is what

  2679. John the Baptist did

2680. this is what Stephen did

2681. is what Philip did is

2682. what Peter did is what

2683. Paul did and let's talk

2684. about what Jesus did so

2685. turn with me if you

2686. will to I'm trying to

2687. skip down a bit Luke

    Luke 10:29

  2688. chapter 10 verse 29

  2689. excuse me verse 25

  2690. if you're getting

  2691. hungry don't be upset

2692. at me be thankful I

2693. just skipped a page and

  2694. a half of my notes I

2695. just want you to see a

  2696. good clear example of

2697. the way in which this

  2698. was done by Jesus

  2699. himself Luke chapter 10

    Luke 10 chapter mention

  2700. beginning of verse 25

2701. this is the parable of

  2702. the good Samaritan your

  2703. Bible probably subtitles

2704. it for you it says and

  2705. behold a lawyer stood

2706. up to put him to the

  2707. test saying teacher what

2708. should I do to inherit

  2709. eternal life so here's a

2710. man likely a scribe who

2711. had a lot of religious

2712. training and the point of

2713. what he's doing is to put

2714. Jesus to the test this is

2715. a haughty thing this is

2716. not a humble thing what

2717. should I do to inherit

2718. eternal life and he said

2719. what is written the law

2720. how do you read it and he

  2721. answered you shall love

2722. the Lord your God with all

2723. your heart with all your

  2724. soul with all your

  2725. strength with all your

2726. mind and your neighbor as

  2727. yourself and Jesus says

  2728. you have answered correctly

2729. do this and you will live

2730. but he the lawyer desiring

2731. to justify himself said to

2732. Jesus and who is my

2733. neighbor but define for me

2734. exactly what it is the

2735. thing I must fulfill and

2736. Jesus goes on to tell the

  2737. parable of the good

  2738. Samaritan very shocking to

2739. the people that would have

2740. been listening to this in

2741. fact that it was the

  2742. religious leaders that pass

2743. around this man and it was

2744. instead the Samaritan the one

  2745. that they considered totally

  2746. unholy totally unrighteous the

2747. Samaritans were like a like an

  2748. inbreeding of Babylonians and

  2749. Jewish they were considered

2750. dirty to the Jewish people and

2751. he's the one that would be

2752. justified before God so he gives

2753. to this man the law another

2754. good example of that if you

  2755. turn to Luke 18 there's a

2756. story of the rich ruler

  2757. 18 18 and a ruler asked him

2758. good teacher what must I do to

2759. inherit eternal life and Jesus

2760. said to him why do you call me

2761. good no one is good except God

2762. alone you know the commandments

2763. do not commit adultery do not

2764. murder do not steal do not bear

2765. false witness honor your father

2766. and mother and he said all these

2767. I have kept from my youth he's

2768. certainly a liar at that point was

2769. he not when Jesus heard this he

2770. said to him one thing you still

2771. lack sell all that you have and

2772. distribute to the poor and you

2773. will have measure treasure in

2774. heaven and come follow me but when

2775. he heard these things he became

2776. very sad for he was extremely rich

2777. he worshipped his goods he

2778. worshipped his stuff he had

2779. neglected the mercy of the law he

2780. had not kept the law and Jesus

2781. exposes that in him right and

  2782. unfortunately to this man's

2783. condemnation he goes away sad

2784. because he couldn't give up the

2785. things he had in this earth for

2786. eternal treasure in heaven now let's

2787. look at example of the way Jesus

2788. responds to a man who comes to him

  2789. humble John chapter 3

    John 3 chapter mention

2790. now there was a man of the

2791. Pharisees named Nicodemus a ruler of

2792. the Jews this man came to Jesus by

2793. night and said to him rabbi we know

2794. that you are a teacher come from

2795. God for no one can do these signs

2796. that you do unless God is with him

2797. this man would have been

2798. incredibly influential in this day

2799. and the reason he's coming to him

2800. at night is because the group he's

2801. a part of is opposing Jesus at this

2802. time but he says I've got to go talk

2803. to him right humbled comes to him

2804. to speak to him verse 3 Jesus

2805. answered him truly truly I say to

2806. you unless one is born again he

2807. cannot see the kingdom of God

2808. Nicodemus said to him how can a man

2809. be born when he is old can he enter

  2810. a second time into his mother's

2811. womb and be born Jesus answered

2812. truly truly I say to you unless one

2813. is born of water in the spirit he

2814. cannot enter the kingdom of God

2815. that which is born of the flesh is

2816. flesh and that which is born of the

2817. spirit is spirit do not marvel that I

2818. said to you must be born again the

2819. wind blows where it wishes and you

2820. hear it sound but you do not where it

2821. comes from or where it is going so it

2822. is everyone who is born of the

2823. spirit the Nicodemus says to him how

2824. can these things be he says are you

2825. the teacher of Israel and you do not

2826. understand these things truly truly I

2827. say to you we speak of what we know

2828. and bear witness of what we have seen

2829. but you do not receive our testimony

2830. if I've told you earthly things you

2831. don't believe how can you believe if I

2832. tell you heavenly things no one has

2833. ascended into heaven except he who

2834. descended from heaven the son of man

2835. and as Moses lifted up the servant in

2836. the wilderness so must the son of man

2837. be lifted up that whoever believes in

2838. him may have eternal life so you see

2839. this gospel presentation and then the

2840. ever famous rightly so John 3 16 is on

2841. the heels of this very thing do you

2842. know that this is who Jesus is talking

2843. about this leader of the Jews who

2844. comes to him humbled he says for God

2845. so loved the world that he gave his

2846. only son that whoever believes in him

2847. should not perish but have eternal

2848. life for God did not send a son to the

2849. world to condemn the world but in order

2850. that the world might be saved through

2851. him do you see the difference there

2852. even though Jesus doesn't expressly

2853. talk about the punishment of God for the

2854. sins of man he does recognize that

2855. Nicodemus is already aware of this he

2856. already knows he knows the law and he

2857. knows his inability to keep the law and

2858. so therefore he gives to him the grace

2859. of the gospel of Jesus Christ there are

2860. literally hundreds of examples of gospel

2861. proclamation in the scriptures the

2862. epistles are full of them we see lots of

2863. them in the historical narratives in the

2864. gospels themselves in the book of Acts

2865. they they abound as I said to you I

2866. would have liked to share with you all

2867. of the various ways in which let me

2868. encourage you to go and read those

2869. gospel proclamations right you're saying

2870. but still what do I say right you know

2871. the gospel if you don't know the gospel

2872. very likely you're not a Christian if you

2873. can't simply outline what it is that

2874. you've been saved from and how it is

2875. that you've been saved come to me I

2876. will explain it to you clearly that you

2877. might sort it out right you know the

  2878. gospel if you're a believer Jesus

2879. Christ share the gospel Jesus Christ

2880. your testimony is not the gospel it's a

2881. result of the gospel you can very well

2882. tell your story and interweave gospel

2883. proclamation from the word of God but

2884. let's be clear that you telling your

2885. story about how you used to feel and

2886. how you feel now is not the power of

2887. God for salvation but the gospel is the

2888. power of God for salvation know your

2889. scriptures learn how to share your

  2890. faith it's scary it's scary you're

2891. dealing with the things of God I tremble

2892. to get up here and preach every Sunday

2893. I don't know if you know that or not

2894. sometimes I want to throw up in the

2895. back of the room before I come up here

2896. we do preaching earlier in the service

2897. sometimes I wish we did it way at the

2898. end all of a sudden we're doing the

2899. offering I'm like what is it time oh my

2900. gosh I got to get up there now I'm

2901. extremely introverted maybe many of you

2902. know that about me like I got to really

2903. flip on a switch to get up and try to be

2904. quasi charismatic when I get up here

2905. right talking to people pressing into

2906. things getting uncomfortable I love to

2907. talk about politics I tremble talking

2908. about that I don't want to make anybody

2909. upset but there is eternal things on the

2910. line here right who cares if you're a

  2911. Republican or a Democrat or a

2912. Libertarian in the large scheme of

2913. things but whether or not you're part

  2914. of God's family matters forever let's

2915. be bold let's share how do we share it

2916. we share the word we get into this

2917. thing we understand it and we know it

2918. you guys are equipped so much beyond

2919. what you think and you have the spirit

2920. of God within you who will give you

2921. words to speak will give you words to

2922. speak so you see we must share the

2923. gospel we must share it regularly and

2924. we must share it rightly let's pray

  2925. together
