  1. So this will be our last Sunday taking a break from our normal pattern of verse-by-verse exposition through the Gospel of Mark.

  2. We've come in Mark to Jesus' arrest and we're going to pick back up next week with his trial and his crucifixion and his resurrection that follows that.

  3. I'm thankful by no great effort of my own in the scheduling of this that we'll actually be able to, Lord willing, things don't change on us, to preach on the resurrection on Easter Sunday.

  4. Not as a break from the text, but as part of the natural flow and telling of it by Mark.

  5. But we've found this need to take a little break, a little stop, a little step away from Mark's Gospel.

  6. Really not as a complete diversion from it, but really as kind of an outworking of some of the things that I believe are happening in our church as a result of our study of Mark.

  7. Two verses in particular that have really been resonating with me.

  8. This axiomatic statement that Jesus makes in Mark 8, 34 and 35, where he says,

  9. If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.

  10. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the Gospels will save it.

  11. So we see that Jesus is saying that you must give up those things that are of value in the world.

  12. You must give up your self-determination.

  13. You must give up your plans and take up mine.

  14. And that's what it's going to mean to follow Jesus, that we're going to deny ourselves.

  15. We're going to die to ourselves and we're going to follow him.

  16. And I think that unfortunately in the American church, there's so many mouths that claim to know Christ.

  17. And there's so few people that actually follow him, that are truly his disciples.

  18. Now hear me, we don't do activity so that we will become his disciples,

  19. but the activity itself becomes the result of who we are in him.

  20. That God, through the work of Christ, has changed our hearts.

  21. He's made us new.

  22. And new people live different than old people.

  23. New creations working out the great mission of the Gospel in this world.

  24. So we started three weeks ago, kind of just gave a general charge to discipleship.

  25. We talked about some of the challenges in our very culture.

  26. The three-county area that we live in, 232,000 people.

  27. It's estimated, I think, quite generously that 80% of them are unchurched.

  28. And so we're looking at a massive number, 186,500 people who, in a generous estimation,

  29. don't know Christ, are eternally separated from God, will be damned forever, rightly, justly punished for their sin.

  30. And they won't respond in faith in large part because Christians aren't telling them the good news of Jesus Christ.

  31. If we're to follow Jesus, we're going to care about what he cares about.

  32. We're going to have to be disciples who are about the work of making disciples.

  33. Two weeks ago, we talked about how the ongoing way this activity is to be encouraged,

  34. which is by the life of a local congregation, by the life of the church.

  35. And in our setting, we talked more specifically about how that will happen in our community outreach groups.

  36. Last week, we addressed some particular, some biblical pattern for evangelism,

  37. for the sharing of the gospel, for the making of converts.

  38. And this week, we're going to talk about discipleship, the ongoing work of maturing converts.

  39. So once a convert is made, and if you guys are hearing, and if God is working in your lives,

  40. and you're seeing the point, if I'm to be a disciple of Jesus Christ,

  41. I'm going to be about the work of making disciples.

  42. This begins with the act of conversion, the Spirit working by our words to change people's hearts.

  43. What do we do after that?

  44. Is there a responsibility beyond?

  45. And yes, there is.

  46. And we tend to call this responsibility discipleship.

  47. But let's build a bit together toward this idea.

  48. So if you will, let me turn to Matthew chapter 28, starting in verse 18.

    Matthew 28 chapter mention

  49. The mission that God has given His church to, we very often, most often call it the Great Commission.

  50. You probably have a subtitle in your copy of God's Word that says the Great Commission.

  51. It's repeated in the synoptics.

  52. It's restated in a little bit of a different way in the first chapter of Acts.

  53. One of my favorite statements of it is recorded here by Matthew.

  54. And Jesus came and said to them,

  55. All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me.

  56. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations,

  57. baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

  58. teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.

  59. And behold, I am with you always to the end of the age.

  60. And we see in these verses, these three verses, a commandment first of all.

  61. And that commandment is in verse 19 in the first part of 20.

  62. Go and make disciples.

  63. Conversion is certainly part of that process, but not merely converts.

  64. Don't just preach the gospel.

  65. Have people respond in faith and leave them.

  66. We've talked about scattering seed.

  67. The way in which we're meant to sow in the parable of the sowers.

  68. And the way that we find the good soil is by sowing seed.

  69. This is the way you see the evidence of this.

  70. But there's a follow-up that must take place.

  71. The field must still be tended when we find good soil.

  72. And part of the way we weed out some things is that we recognize,

  73. as we're working in people's lives, once they have been made converts to Christ,

  74. the fruit and the things that are happening to them in that regard.

  75. We're meant to baptize them in the name of the Father and Son and Holy Spirit.

  76. And we're meant to teach them to observe all that Jesus Christ has commanded us.

  77. So this is what he leaves us with.

  78. Here are the things that I have given to you.

  79. Now go and make disciples.

  80. So we should ask the question, what is a disciple?

  81. If we are disciples and we're meant to make disciples, what is a disciple?

  82. And just simply, probably even in too simple of a term,

  83. I'm going to say that a disciple is a follower and propagator of Jesus,

  84. his teaching and his ways.

  85. A follower and propagator of Jesus, his teaching and his ways.

  86. So a disciple makes disciples, necessarily.

  87. This is part of what a disciple does.

  88. They make others disciples.

  89. Dietrich Bonhoeffer, in his book, The Cost of Discipleship,

  90. which I would strongly encourage anyone here to read.

  91. He defines what discipleship is and what it is not.

  92. He writes this,

  93. Discipleship means adherence to Christ.

  94. And because Christ is the object of that adherence,

  95. it must take the form of discipleship.

  96. We must follow because it's Christ.

  97. He's a man.

  98. We must follow.

  99. An abstract Christology or understanding of who Christ is,

  100. a doctrinal system, a general religious knowledge on the subject of grace

  101. or on the forgiveness of sins,

  102. render discipleship superfluous.

  103. And in fact, they positively exclude any idea of discipleship whatever

  104. and are essentially inimical or contrary to the whole conception of following Christ.

  105. With an abstract idea, it is possible to enter into a relation of formal knowledge,

  106. to become enthusiastic about it,

  107. and perhaps even to put it into practice.

  108. But it can never be followed in personal obedience.

  109. Christianity without the living Christ is inevitably Christianity without discipleship.

  110. And Christianity without discipleship is always Christianity without Christ.

  111. Let me rephrase that in my own terms.

  112. I hope you appreciate Bonhoeffer's writing.

  113. We, and I think particularly us, tend to be very heady Christians.

  114. We know a lot.

  115. This congregation could stand toe-to-toe with many people and defend the faith.

  116. And this is good.

  117. It's good for us to have a depth in that regard.

  118. It's good for us to know a lot.

  119. Theology is precious.

  120. God has revealed Himself to us in the Scriptures,

  121. and we ought not neglect anything that He has taught us to be true.

  122. But in many ways, we're very, very immature as Christians

  123. because we know so much and we practice so little.

  124. And this is what He's saying.

  125. Some abstract idea, some formation of a philosophy of who Jesus Christ is,

  126. is of no value if it's not practiced in our lives.

  127. We must be obedient to the things that we know.

  128. And a disciple necessarily works out and is obedient to the call of Christ.

  129. The great mark of Christian maturity is obedience.

  130. Why are we to make disciples?

  131. Again, from this text.

  132. Verse 18.

  133. Jesus says,

  134. All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me.

  135. And then He says what in verse 19?

  136. Go, therefore.

  137. Because this is the case, go and make disciples.

  138. Jesus Christ has been set on His throne to reign over His kingdom.

  139. This has been accomplished.

  140. He Himself says it there.

  141. All authority in heaven and on earth.

  142. It has been given.

  143. In Mark 1, 14 and 15, Mark records that now after John was arrested,

  144. Jesus came into Galilee proclaiming the gospel of God, the good news of God,

  145. and saying,

  146. The time is fulfilled and the kingdom of God is at hand.

  147. Repent and believe in the gospel.

  148. This was the message that He brought as well.

  149. The kingdom is here.

  150. My reign has begun.

  151. And the way in which God, through Christ, reigns in the world is by bearing Himself,

  152. bringing people into new life, restored relationship with Him in their hearts, here and now.

  153. And this is why we're meant to make disciples.

  154. This is why the major activity of the Christian church is to advance the kingdom of God by the grace of God in this world.

  155. We're bringing to bear the things that Christ Himself is reigning over.

  156. And in the last half of verse 20, we're given a promise.

  157. A precious promise.

  158. A promise that without this task would be entirely overwhelming.

  159. I would shut down if it were not for the promise in the last half of verse 20.

  160. Which is,

  161. And behold, I am with you always to the end of the age.

  162. Behold, the one to whom all authority over heaven and earth has been given is with you

  163. as you go about this work of making disciples.

  164. So we are granted power by Jesus Christ,

  165. who possesses all the power to bring others to follow Him.

  166. To the end that He will be exalted in all things to all peoples.

  167. Sounds familiar, doesn't it?

  168. I'm always afraid I'm going to point at that and it's not up there.

  169. So this wonderful promise that He will be with us in this.

  170. Praise God for the sending of His Spirit.

  171. That when Jesus left, the nature by which the Spirit operated in the world changed.

  172. Prior to Jesus coming onto the earth,

  173. the Spirit came and visited people in particular times and in particular ways.

  174. This has changed entirely.

  175. It's a promise that He gave to us.

  176. And let me encourage you to turn to John 14.

  177. And just follow quickly with me through three chapters.

  178. A couple verses from each one.

  179. And let me tell you what I mean.

  180. It is better that Jesus is now seated at the right hand of the Father.

  181. It's better.

  182. And in my mind, sometimes that's hard to understand

  183. because it seems to me that the days,

  184. the most precious days in history are the days in which He walked on the earth.

  185. And the disciples just got to follow Him around and watch Him work and do and go.

  186. He was the disciple maker.

  187. They were tasked a couple of times to go out and preach the gospel.

  188. But primarily, they were a witness to what He was doing.

  189. But He said it's far better that He's gone.

  190. We have the helper now.

  191. John 14, verses 16 and 17.

    John 14:16

  192. He says,

  193. So this is right before Jesus' crucifixion.

  194. The Spirit dwells with you and will be in you.

  195. It's promised that the Spirit of God will actually come and reside

  196. in those of us who place our faith in Jesus Christ.

  197. Turn to the next chapter, John 15.

  198. 4 and 5.

  199. This is going to have great implication

  200. for those of us who have placed our faith in Jesus Christ,

  201. who are in fact new creations,

  202. converted,

  203. who have the Spirit of God within us.

  204. Jesus says,

  205. Verse 4,

  206. Abide in Me,

  207. and I in you.

  208. This is the walking by the Spirit

  209. that Paul talks about in Romans.

  210. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself

  211. unless it abides in the vine,

  212. neither can you unless you abide in Me.

  213. I am the vine.

  214. You are the branches.

  215. Whoever abides in Me and I in him,

  216. he it is that bears much fruit.

  217. For apart from Me,

  218. you can do nothing.

  219. This is on the heels of Him telling them

  220. He's going to send to them a helper.

  221. The very power of God to live within them.

  222. That they might abide

  223. so that they will bear fruit.

  224. John 16.

  225. 7.

  226. There's some sorrow on behalf of the disciples.

  227. What you're leaving,

  228. He's promising,

  229. and there's great things that are going to happen

  230. when He does depart.

  231. They're leaving.

  232. And He says,

  233. I tell you the truth,

  234. 16.

  235. 7.

  236. It is to your advantage that I go away.

  237. For if I do not go away,

  238. the Helper will not come to you.

  239. But if I go,

  240. I will send Him to you.

  241. So as we talk about this process

  242. of making disciples

  243. and what that looks like,

  244. we must,

  245. we absolutely must,

  246. stop and recognize

  247. that it is by the power of God

  248. that people are converted

  249. and that people are ultimately made perfect.

  250. That they are sanctified.

  251. They are moved along in holiness.

  252. This is a work of God.

  253. However,

  254. God does use graces.

  255. One of those is the church.

  256. One of those is the people sitting to your right

  257. and to your left

  258. and before you and behind you.

  259. That we are saved to a community of believers

  260. by which we disciple one another.

  261. But it's ultimately and finally the work of God

  262. through those people on our behalf.

  263. I found this,

  264. some of the crosses quote

  265. by Charles Spurgeon.

  266. He said,

  267. If I had any human master,

  268. he would have been out of patience with me long ago.

  269. I would agree with him on that.

  270. But the Lord Jesus Christ

  271. never gives up a scholar.

  272. Having once commenced to teach,

  273. he continues his divine lessons

  274. till they are fully learned.

  275. And the more difficult it is for him to teach,

  276. the more honor it will be

  277. when he gets all his scholars educated

  278. for the skies.

  279. So, praise God that it's ultimately Jesus' work.

  280. Because he doesn't give up on us

  281. even though in our human relationships

  282. we often grow tired of the work ahead

  283. for the work of sanctification.

  284. So, what is then discipleship?

  285. What is this grace given to us

  286. by which we work in this way?

  287. And here's my definition.

  288. Discipleship is the God-given,

  289. God-empowered process

  290. by which the church brings about obedience

  291. to the commands of God.

  292. Discipleship is the God-given,

  293. God-empowered process

  294. by which the church brings about obedience

  295. to the commands of God.

  296. Now, sometimes as the church,

  297. when we think about discipleship

  298. or when we practice discipleship,

  299. our definition is too narrow.

  300. We think of it as one particular thing,

  301. but in a broad sense,

  302. it's so many things.

  303. It's everything that one Christian does

  304. in service to another Christian,

  305. at least rightly does,

  306. in service to another Christian.

  307. In a broad sense,

  308. discipleship is most everything

  309. we're doing together.

  310. Me preaching to you this morning

  311. is a form of discipleship,

  312. opening the Word of God before you

  313. and telling you what it means

  314. and the implications for your life.

  315. Discipleship is Wes and Liz

  316. picking out God-honoring,

  317. Gospel-saturated songs

  318. and leading us in the singing of them.

  319. If you even kind of tune your brain in

  320. to the words that you're singing,

  321. you will be taught by those songs.

  322. It's the prayers that you're led in

  323. when we meet together in this way.

  324. Prayers based in the promises of God.

  325. It's the activity of our community outreach groups,

  326. the way in which they fellowship

  327. with one another around the Scriptures

  328. and encourage each other to love in good works.

  329. It's the encouraging words

  330. that you speak to one another in the hallways.

  331. It's the late-night phone conversations

  332. when you're having a struggle

  333. and you need a good Christian friend.

  334. It's the modeling of a healthy home

  335. around a meal.

  336. Young people,

  337. those of you who are not in college,

  338. the few of you in the room,

  339. many of these young people

  340. don't know what healthy homes look like.

  341. The more and more we get to know

  342. our congregation

  343. and the people who are coming in

  344. and out of our congregation,

  345. healthy home is more of a rarity

  346. than I'd like to admit.

  347. It's a sad thing.

  348. They need to see healthy home

  349. just coming over

  350. and having a meal with you

  351. and just seeing the way in which

  352. you love on your wife

  353. and on your children.

  354. Discipleship in the broad sense

  355. is the life of the church.

  356. It's all the things we do together,

  357. both within our set programs

  358. and without.

  359. And as such,

  360. no one is exempt

  361. from this activity

  362. for any reason whatsoever.

  363. That's what we have been saying

  364. about the body a couple of weeks ago.

  365. Talking about the activity

  366. of the church.

  367. We're all part of the body.

  368. Necessary parts of the body.

  369. You all have a part to play

  370. in service to one another.

  371. That we will be pressing at each other

  372. gospel truth

  373. to follow Christ

  374. in all that we do.

  375. These things are of immense importance.

  376. Now, a way of kind of framing this idea

  377. which has been helpful to me

  378. in thinking about the life of our church,

  379. both the things that we ought

  380. to be doing together,

  381. the programs we should have in place,

  382. and the things that we ought not,

  383. the things that shouldn't be programmed,

  384. the things that shouldn't be organic,

  385. that should be happening

  386. as a result of the work of the Spirit

  387. in your lives.

  388. There's a book called

  389. The Trellis and the Vine,

  390. which is written by,

  391. co-written two guys,

  392. Colin Marshall and Tony Payne.

  393. And there's a wonderful analogy

  394. which the title of the book

  395. is based off of,

  396. and I'm going to read it to you

  397. and give a little bit

  398. of explanation to it.

  399. I hope this will help

  400. get your head going

  401. in the right direction as well.

  402. What does, in a general sense,

  403. discipleship look like?

  404. How should it be played out

  405. in our day-to-day living

  406. with one another?

  407. I think it's Tony Payne.

  408. I think it's Tony Payne

  409. that's writing in chapter one.

  410. We have two trellises

  411. in our backyard.

  412. Do you guys all know

  413. what a trellis is?

  414. It's a thing that's on the side

  415. of your house

  416. that supports a vine?

  417. We have two trellises

  418. in our backyard.

  419. The one attached

  420. to the back wall of the garage

  421. is a very fine piece

  422. of latticework.

  423. I wish I could claim it

  424. as my own creation,

  425. but I cannot.

  426. It is sturdy and dependable

  427. and neatly designed,

  428. and the Federation green paintwork

  429. has been kept fresh.

  430. It lacks only one thing,

  431. a vine.

  432. Tony Payne is Australian,

  433. so Federation green

  434. is a color

  435. that they would understand there.

  436. Kelly green

  437. would be our version of it.

  438. Imagine there once was a vine,

  439. unless, oh, I'm sorry,

  440. I imagine there once was a vine,

  441. unless the construction

  442. of the trellis

  443. was one of those handyman tasks

  444. that took so long

  445. that in the end,

  446. no one got around

  447. to planting something

  448. to grow on it.

  449. Someone certainly put a lot

  450. of time and care

  451. into building it.

  452. It's almost a work of art,

  453. but if there was ever

  454. a vine that laced itself

  455. around this beautiful trellis,

  456. there is now no trace of it.

  457. The other trellis

  458. leans up against the side fence

  459. and is barely visible

  460. beneath a flourishing

  461. jasmine vine.

  462. With some fertilizer

  463. and an occasional watering,

  464. the jasmine keeps thrusting

  465. out new shoots,

  466. winding its way across,

  467. up,

  468. and over the fence,

  469. putting out its delicate

  470. white flowers

  471. as the warmth of spring approaches.

  472. Some pruning is needed

  473. every now and then,

  474. and some weeding

  475. around the base.

  476. I've also had to spray it

  477. once or twice

  478. to stop caterpillars

  479. from feasting

  480. on the juicy green leaves,

  481. but the jasmine

  482. just keeps growing.

  483. It's hard to tell

  484. what condition the trellis

  485. is under the jasmine,

  486. but at the few points

  487. where it is still visible,

  488. I can see that it hasn't

  489. been painted

  490. in a long time.

  491. At one end,

  492. it has been pried

  493. off the fence

  494. by the insistent fingers

  495. of the jasmine,

  496. and although I have tried

  497. to reattach it

  498. more than once,

  499. it is useless.

  500. The jasmine

  501. has taken over.

  502. I know I'll have to do

  503. something about this

  504. in the long term,

  505. because eventually

  506. the weight of the jasmine

  507. will pull the trellis

  508. off the fence altogether,

  509. and the whole thing

  510. will collapse.

  511. I've often thought

  512. of taking a cutting

  513. from the jasmine

  514. and seeing if it will grow

  515. on the beautiful

  516. but vacant trellis

  517. on the garage,

  518. although it almost

  519. seems a shame

  520. to cover it up.

  521. And in the book,

  522. they go on to talk

  523. about how the church

  524. is so often

  525. very distracted

  526. with what they call

  527. trellis work,

  528. which is important

  529. and necessary

  530. to support the vine,

  531. the programs,

  532. the administrative things

  533. that we do,

  534. but we get so captivated

  535. by those things

  536. that we lose track

  537. of the vine work,

  538. the people work,

  539. the heart work.

  540. And the way

  541. that we do this

  542. is we simply apply

  543. the gospel to one another

  544. in so many situations,

  545. in all the various ways

  546. that we ought to be doing

  547. that's given to us

  548. in the scriptures,

  549. rather than creating

  550. program after program

  551. after program

  552. after program

  553. after program.

  554. There's a little need.

  555. We must have a ministry

  556. to meet that need.

  557. Our lives are ministry.

  558. There's a ministry,

  559. right?

  560. And that is discipleship.

  561. So begin to see things.

  562. Start to think about things

  563. in terms of trellis and vine,

  564. and I hope in your life

  565. there's much more weight

  566. given to the vine work

  567. that is so,

  568. so very necessary.

  569. Now certainly

  570. in a more specific sense,

  571. discipleship can mean something,

  572. and this is where we tend

  573. to have this narrow idea of it,

  574. but it is valuable

  575. as a narrow idea,

  576. and that takes place

  577. in more planned,

  578. more organized,

  579. one-to-one discipleship,

  580. or one-to-two,

  581. or three,

  582. or four,

  583. or five.

  584. Many of you

  585. who have been involved

  586. in campus ministries here

  587. are very familiar

  588. with this type of discipleship,

  589. and this is a type

  590. of discipleship

  591. that takes place

  592. in our church as well.

  593. There are many,

  594. many people

  595. in our church

  596. that are involved

  597. in some form

  598. of discipleship group

  599. that meet in various ways.

  600. I've got a couple of guys,

  601. we meet together,

  602. and we just finished

  603. reading a biography together,

  604. and now we're going to study

  605. the book of Acts together.

  606. I know there are a lot

  607. of people who are gathering.

  608. It's so encouraging to me

  609. that you're coming up here

  610. on Sunday afternoons

  611. and using the building.

  612. The other Sunday,

  613. I couldn't find a space to go

  614. because there are little groups

  615. meeting all over the place.

  616. They hadn't even talked to me

  617. about being here,

  618. but I didn't care.

  619. Like, come on,

  620. use the building.

  621. Meet around the scriptures

  622. and encourage one another

  623. to love and good works.

  624. These activities

  625. are taking place.

  626. And what I'd like to say to you

  627. is that it should be happening

  628. in a higher degree.

  629. There should be more

  630. of this going on.

  631. Spurring one another on.

  632. Encouraging one another.

  633. Loving each other

  634. with the gospel.

  635. So turn with me a little

  636. to Titus chapter 2.

    Titus 2 chapter mention

  637. If you can believe it,

  638. this is our main text for today.

  639. Although,

  640. I'm just going to glean

  641. some things out of it.

  642. We're not going to look

  643. at every bit of it.

  644. There's much to be said

  645. about this chapter

  646. that I just won't have time

  647. for today.

  648. But there are a few things,

  649. some characteristics

  650. of discipleship,

  651. five in fact,

  652. that I want to pull out

  653. of this text

  654. to show you

  655. how is it that we're meant

  656. to be going about this work.

  657. It's a short chapter.

  658. We're going to read

  659. all of Titus chapter 2 together.

    Titus 2 chapter mention

  660. This is Paul's letter to Titus.

  661. But as for you,

  662. teach what accords

  663. with sound doctrine.

  664. I just want to remind you

  665. that Titus is a man.

  666. So he's going to give

  667. some instruction to men.

  668. Titus is a man

  669. in this environment.

  670. But as for you,

  671. teach what accords

  672. with sound doctrine.

  673. Older men are to be

  674. sober-minded,

  675. dignified,

  676. self-controlled,

  677. sound in faith,

  678. in love,

  679. and in steadfastness.

  680. Older women, likewise,

  681. are to be reverent in behavior,

  682. not slanders

  683. or slaves to much wine.

  684. They are to teach

  685. what is good.

  686. And so train the younger women

  687. to love their husbands

  688. and children,

  689. to be self-controlled,

  690. pure,

  691. working at home,

  692. kind,

  693. and submissive

  694. to their own husbands,

  695. that the word of God

  696. may not be reviled.

  697. Likewise,

  698. urge the younger men

  699. to be self-controlled.

  700. Show yourself in all respects

  701. to be a model of good works,

  702. and in your teaching

  703. show integrity,

  704. dignity,

  705. and sound speech

  706. that cannot be condemned,

  707. so that an opponent

  708. may be put to shame,

  709. having nothing evil

  710. to say about us.

  711. Slaves are to be submissive

  712. to their own masters

  713. and everything.

  714. They are to be well-pleasing,

  715. not argumentative,

  716. not pilfering,

  717. but showing all good faith,

  718. so that in everything

  719. they may adorn the doctrine

  720. of God our Savior.

  721. For the grace of God

  722. has appeared,

  723. bringing salvation

  724. for all people,

  725. training us to renounce

  726. ungodliness

  727. and worldly passions,

  728. and to live self-controlled,

  729. upright,

  730. and godly lives

  731. in the present age,

  732. waiting for our blessed hope,

  733. the appearing of the glory

  734. of our great God and Savior,

  735. Jesus Christ,

  736. who gave himself for us

  737. to redeem us

  738. from all lawlessness,

  739. and to purify for himself

  740. a people for his own possession

  741. who are zealous

  742. for good works.

  743. Declare these things,

  744. exhort and rebuke

  745. with all authority.

  746. Let no one disregard you.

  747. So in this,

  748. we see this charge

  749. to life together.

  750. In fact,

  751. many people will refer

  752. to this chapter

  753. as Titus 2 ministry,

  754. the way in which

  755. the generation before

  756. is meant to invest

  757. in the generation

  758. that's coming along.

  759. Firstly,

  760. discipleship is personal.

  761. Discipleship is personal.

  762. It necessitates relationship.

  763. Relationship in which

  764. there is transparency

  765. and honesty.

  766. So many people

  767. are parts of churches

  768. and the people in that church

  769. really don't know them.

  770. No one in that church

  771. really knows them.

  772. In fact,

  773. I think this is one

  774. of the great reasons

  775. that the mega church

  776. is on the rise

  777. because people don't like

  778. to be made uncomfortable.

  779. People want to melt

  780. into the back

  781. and melt back out.

  782. No one knows

  783. if they're there

  784. or not.

  785. Sam and I went to

  786. a new hamburger place,

  787. a place called Burger 21

  788. down by the Mall of Georgia.

  789. My brother-in-law's brother

  790. owns it,

  791. so if you're in the area,

  792. go support him.

  793. He's a good guy.

  794. We're sitting there

  795. and we ended up

  796. with a table

  797. really close to the soda fountain

  798. and people are going

  799. and coming and going

  800. and we ran into

  801. a lot of people

  802. that we knew

  803. that we hadn't seen

  804. in a long time

  805. like my middle school

  806. health teacher.

  807. An interesting night

  808. and Sam ran into

  809. a lot of people

  810. that she had grown up

  811. in church with

  812. and in their conversation,

  813. many of them

  814. told her

  815. where they were now

  816. fellowshipping,

  817. where they were attending

  818. to church

  819. and it was

  820. all the same place.

  821. Every single person,

  822. every single one of them

  823. was the same place

  824. and I didn't

  825. but as a sociological experiment

  826. I really wanted

  827. to get up on the table

  828. and just get them

  829. all to raise their hands,

  830. anybody who fellowshiped,

  831. attended this place

  832. and then see how many of them

  833. actually knew each other

  834. because as I watched them

  835. they didn't seem

  836. to have a clue.

  837. They didn't have a clue

  838. that they all

  839. actually were part

  840. participating in

  841. the life

  842. of a local fellowship.

  843. It's easier

  844. that way.

  845. But discipleship,

  846. growing,

  847. practicing,

  848. employing this grace

  849. that's given to us

  850. by God,

  851. the church

  852. is going to require

  853. relationship.

  854. It's going to be

  855. personal.

  856. It's going to hurt

  857. at times.

  858. It's going to cause you

  859. to have to drop

  860. the facade.

  861. Take off the

  862. front stage makeup

  863. and let people

  864. into the backstage

  865. of your life.

  866. Show them the mess.

  867. It's important.

  868. It's the best thing

  869. that can happen

  870. in the pursual of Christ.

  871. Tell people

  872. how much you need

  873. His grace.

  874. Encourage them

  875. to preach the gospel

  876. to you.

  877. Look at verse 7

  878. of chapter 2

  879. of Titus.

  880. See,

  881. his exhortation

  882. to Titus

  883. is to show

  884. yourself

  885. in all respects

  886. to be a model

  887. of good works.

  888. To have people

  889. walk along with you

  890. to model for them

  891. what good works

  892. look like.

  893. And to show

  894. in the teaching

  895. integrity,

  896. dignity,

  897. sound speech

  898. that can't be

  899. condemned.

  900. So that an opponent

  901. can just be put to shame.

  902. They have nothing evil

  903. to say about you

  904. or about us.

  905. There's other

  906. personal language

  907. in the text as well

  908. like train

  909. and urge.

  910. Verse 15,

  911. exhort

  912. and rebuke.

  913. We are meant

  914. to be in relationship

  915. with one another

  916. and discipleship

  917. must be

  918. personal.

  919. Ecclesiastes 4,

  920. 9 and 10

  921. says,

  922. Two are better

  923. than one

  924. because they have

  925. a good reward

  926. for their toil.

  927. For if they fall,

  928. one will lift up

  929. his fellow.

  930. But woe to him

  931. who is alone

  932. when he falls

  933. and has not another

  934. to lift him up.

  935. Personal.

  936. A person who is there

  937. who witnesses

  938. the fall,

  939. who catches you

  940. in the process of it

  941. and lifts you

  942. back up.

  943. Galatians 6,

  944. 2 says,

  945. Bear one another's

  946. burdens

  947. and so fulfill

  948. the law of Christ.

  949. And I believe

  950. what Paul is referring

  951. to there

  952. is when Jesus says

  953. that he's giving

  954. to them a new law

  955. and that is

  956. that you love

  957. one another.

  958. Of great importance.

  959. Discipleship is

  960. personal.

  961. Secondly,

  962. discipleship is

  963. theological.

  964. Discipleship is

  965. theological.

  966. Don't be misled.

  967. Instead,

  968. just getting together

  969. and talking

  970. about your problems

  971. does not mean

  972. you're part

  973. of a discipleship

  974. process.

  975. Getting together

  976. and venting out

  977. the issues of your life,

  978. giving trite

  979. pop psychology

  980. answers to those things

  981. isn't really helpful

  982. or good for anybody.

  983. Discipleship

  984. is centered around

  985. the Word of God.

  986. The Word of God

  987. is centered around

  988. the Gospel of God.

  989. This is the treatment

  990. for all of our ills.

  991. This is the encouragement

  992. to love

  993. and to good works.

  994. Discipleship must be

  995. theological.

  996. Again, look at our text.

  997. Titus chapter 2

    Titus 2:1

  998. verse 1

  999. But as for you,

  1000. teach what accords

  1001. with sound doctrine.

  1002. An exhortation

  1003. to older women.

1004. Last half of verse 3.

  1005. They are to teach

  1006. what is good.

  1007. Verse 5

  1008. The activity

  1009. that the younger women

1010. are supposed to be about.

  1011. The older women

1012. are supposed to be teaching them.

  1013. This activity

  1014. that they're supposed

  1015. to be about.

  1016. Paul says

1017. that the Word of God

  1018. may not be reviled.

  1019. There's a practice

  1020. that is in line

  1021. with the things

  1022. that God is teaching.

  1023. Verse 15

  1024. Paul says

  1025. Declare these things.

  1026. Exhort and rebuke

  1027. with all authority.

  1028. Let no one

  1029. disregard you.

1030. And back into verse 10

  1031. the activity

  1032. of the bondservant

  1033. is meant to be

  1034. a display

  1035. so that in everything

  1036. they may adorn

  1037. the doctrine

  1038. of God our Savior.

  1039. This is the activity

  1040. of discipleship.

  1041. It is theological.

  1042. Growing people

  1043. with the truth.

  1044. This is the expression

  1045. given to us

  1046. in Ephesians 4

  1047. of the activity

  1048. of the church

  1049. beginning in verse 11.

  1050. And He being Jesus

  1051. gave the apostles

  1052. the prophets

  1053. the evangelists

  1054. the shepherds

  1055. and teachers.

  1056. I think these are

1057. things that are still active.

  1058. So apostles

  1059. little A

  1060. not apostles big A

  1061. and prophets

  1062. not vision seers

  1063. but those who are

  1064. calling people back

1065. to the truth of God.

  1066. Evangelists

  1067. those who are

  1068. particularly gifted

  1069. in the sharing

  1070. of their faith.

  1071. Shepherds and teachers

  1072. which I believe

  1073. is one thing

  1074. but those who are

  1075. called to pastor people

  1076. these gifts given

  1077. to the church.

  1078. Verse 12

  1079. to equip the saints

1080. for the work of ministry

  1081. for the building

1082. of the body of Christ.

  1083. So the work

  1084. is then given

  1085. to the church

  1086. this work

  1087. that's multifaceted

  1088. that involves everybody

  1089. the body building itself.

  1090. Right?

  1091. So you're giving

  1092. and equipping

  1093. that you might minister

  1094. to one another.

  1095. Verse 13

  1096. until we all attain

  1097. to the unity

  1098. of the faith

  1099. of the knowledge

1100. of the Son of God.

  1101. It's very doctrinal

  1102. is it not?

  1103. To mature manhood

  1104. to the measure

  1105. of the stature

  1106. of the fullness

  1107. of Christ

  1108. so that we may

  1109. no longer be children

  1110. tossed to and fro

  1111. by the waves

  1112. and carried about

  1113. by every wind

  1114. of doctrine.

  1115. We'll be able

  1116. to stand firm

1117. because we have been taught

  1118. because our discipleship

  1119. is theological.

  1120. By human cunning

  1121. by craftiness

  1122. and deceitful schemes

  1123. rather

  1124. speaking the truth

  1125. in love.

1126. We are to grow up

  1127. in every way

  1128. into him

  1129. who is the head

  1130. into Christ

1131. from whom the whole body

  1132. joined and held together

  1133. by every joint

1134. with which it is equipped

  1135. when each part

  1136. is working properly

  1137. makes the body grow

  1138. so that it builds

  1139. itself up

  1140. in love.

1141. Do you see the expression

  1142. given there

1143. of the way in which

  1144. we're meant to be

  1145. ministering

  1146. the word of God

  1147. to one another?

  1148. Discipleship is

  1149. theological.

  1150. 2 Timothy 3.16

  1151. Familiar?

  1152. Children?

  1153. You ready?

  1154. All scriptures

  1155. breed that by God

  1156. and profitable for teaching

  1157. for reproof

  1158. for correction

  1159. and for training

  1160. in righteousness

  1161. and for their sake

  1162. we didn't go on

  1163. to verse 17

  1164. but I would encourage

  1165. you to know

1166. that the man of God

  1167. may be complete

  1168. equipped

  1169. for every

  1170. good work.

1171. So it is the tool

  1172. put in our hands

  1173. by which we

  1174. grow one another

  1175. in faith.

  1176. The Holy Bible

  1177. is our guide

  1178. and our rule

  1179. for holiness

  1180. so it must be

  1181. employed

  1182. in the making

  1183. of disciples.

  1184. So discipleship

  1185. is theological.

  1186. But not just that

  1187. discipleship

  1188. is also

  1189. practical.

  1190. It's also practical

  1191. which means

  1192. it takes

  1193. an investment

  1194. of time.

  1195. It's important

  1196. beloved

  1197. that we

  1198. are saying

  1199. to one another

  1200. not simply

  1201. do as I say

  1202. but also

  1203. do as I

  1204. do.

  1205. Look at the

  1206. instruction

  1207. for the way

  1208. in which

  1209. people are

  1210. meant to

  1211. live

  1212. in Titus

    Titus 2:2

  1213. chapter 2

  1214. verse 2

  1215. older men

  1216. we get this

  1217. list of things

  1218. sober minded

  1219. dignified

  1220. self-controlled

  1221. sound in faith

  1222. and love

  1223. and instead

  1224. facets

  1225. it's meant

  1226. to be a

  1227. display

  1228. it's meant

  1229. to be a

  1230. thing

  1231. that's being

  1232. modeled

  1233. older women

  1234. likewise

  1235. reverent in

  1236. behavior

  1237. not slanders

  1238. or slaves

  1239. to much

  1240. wine

  1241. there to

  1242. teach

  1243. what is

  1244. good

  1245. so train

  1246. the young

  1247. women

  1248. to love

  1249. their husbands

  1250. and children

  1251. to be

  1252. self-controlled

  1253. pure

  1254. working at

  1255. home

  1256. kind

  1257. and submissive

  1258. to their own

  1259. husbands

  1260. likewise

  1261. urge the

  1262. younger men

  1263. to be

  1264. self-controlled

  1265. bond servants

  1266. are given

  1267. some instruction

  1268. here

  1269. servants

  1270. will be

  1271. submissive

  1272. to their

  1273. own masters

  1274. well-pleasing

  1275. not argumentative

  1276. not pilfering

  1277. but showing

  1278. all good

  1279. faith

  1280. so that

  1281. everything

  1282. that may

  1283. adorn

  1284. the doctrine

  1285. of God

  1286. our Savior

  1287. and here's

  1288. a great

  1289. tragedy

  1290. in our

  1291. culture

  1292. we become

  1293. such high-minded

  1294. Christians

  1295. that we

  1296. either think

  1297. only those

  1298. who have

  1299. such great

  1300. depth

  1301. of theological

  1302. education

  1303. have any

  1304. business

  1305. teaching

  1306. anybody

  1307. anything

  1308. we have

  1309. a tragedy

  1310. in that

  1311. or

  1312. that we

  1313. think

  1314. because

  1315. we

  1316. don't

  1317. we have

  1318. nothing

  1319. to offer

  1320. anybody

  1321. else

  1322. and talking

  1323. with some

  1324. of the

  1325. non-college

  1326. adults

  1327. in our

  1328. church

  1329. many of

  1330. you are

  1331. intimidated

  1332. by the

  1333. knowledge

  1334. of the

  1335. students

  1336. that are

  1337. in our

  1338. church

  1339. but they

  1340. need to

  1341. see your

  1342. faithfulness

  1343. to the

  1344. word of

  1345. God

  1346. modeled

  1347. out

  1348. right

  1349. again

  1350. like I

  1351. mentioned

  1352. before

  1353. the way

  1354. in which

  1355. you love

  1356. your wife

  1357. and your

  1358. children

  1359. vice

  1360. versa

  1361. wives

  1362. the way

  1363. you love

  1364. your husbands

  1365. and lead

  1366. your children

  1367. this is an

  1368. important thing

  1369. see the

  1370. faithfulness

  1371. in working

  1372. a job

  1373. holding down

  1374. the nine

  1375. to five

  1376. they need

  1377. to hear

  1378. about how

  1379. you've

  1380. learned

  1381. to glorify

  1382. God

  1383. in the

  1384. mundane

  1385. things

  1386. of life

  1387. college students

  1388. have no

  1389. idea

  1390. how much

  1391. time is

  1392. going to be

  1393. spent in

  1394. a home

  1395. washing

  1396. dishes

  1397. and

  1398. clothes

  1399. and cleaning

  1400. floors

  1401. just

  1402. clueless

  1403. for the

  1404. most part

  1405. and it's

  1406. shocking to

  1407. them when

  1408. they get

  1409. to this

  1410. point

  1411. how do

  1412. I

  1413. worship

  1414. God

  1415. in

  1416. these

  1417. things

  1418. it's

  1419. amazing

  1420. to hear

  1421. the stories

  1422. of young

  1423. people

  1424. who have

  1425. gone off

  1426. to be

  1427. foreign

  1428. missionaries

  1429. they've

  1430. romanticized

  1431. it

  1432. they think

  1433. it's

  1434. going to

  1435. be such

  1436. a fantastic

  1437. it's

  1438. going to

  1439. be so

  1440. radical

  1441. and they

  1442. realize

  1443. when they

  1444. get there

  1445. they have

  1446. to wash

  1447. dishes

  1448. and do

  1449. laundry

  1450. but it

  1451. just takes

  1452. twice as

  1453. long

  1454. all of

  1455. the mundane

  1456. things of

  1457. life go

  1458. along

  1459. with them

  1460. and you

  1461. have such

  1462. opportunity

  1463. to show

  1464. them how

  1465. to walk

  1466. these things

  1467. out together

  1468. there's got

  1469. to be a

  1470. practical

  1471. side to

  1472. discipleship

  1473. not just

  1474. teaching things

  1475. but modeling

  1476. it out

  1477. as well

  1478. so discipleship

  1479. is

  1480. practical

  1481. discipleship

  1482. is

  1483. humble

  1484. fourthly

  1485. discipleship

  1486. is humble

  1487. both for

  1488. the

  1489. disciple

  1490. e

  1491. and the

  1492. disciple

  1493. and i'm

  1494. really pretty

  1495. sure i just

  1496. made both

  1497. those words

  1498. up

  1499. verse 11

  1500. says for

  1501. the grace

  1502. of god

  1503. has appeared

  1504. bringing salvation

  1505. for all people

  1506. verse 12

  1507. training us

  1508. to renounce

  1509. ungodliness

  1510. and worldly

  1511. passions and

  1512. to live

  1513. self-controlled

  1514. upright

  1515. and godly

  1516. lives in

  1517. the present

  1518. age for

  1519. the grace

  1520. of god

  1521. being

  1522. christ

  1523. and now

  1524. by his

  1525. spirit

  1526. with the

  1527. primary use

  1528. of the word

  1529. we are being

  1530. trained in

  1531. the way

  1532. that we

  1533. should live

  1534. as i said

  1535. before

  1536. this is a

  1537. mighty work

  1538. of god

  1539. so to grow

  1540. in faith

  1541. in the activity

  1542. of discipleship

  1543. either as the

  1544. recipient of it

  1545. or the

  1546. leader of it

  1547. is a humbling

  1548. thing because

  1549. we need him

  1550. we need him

  1551. to work in us

  1552. and through us

  1553. you ought to

  1554. feel the weight

  1555. of being a

  1556. discipler

  1557. you ought to

  1558. go god

  1559. i'm not sufficient

  1560. for this task

  1561. but praise you

  1562. i am in

  1563. christ

  1564. this is the

  1565. thing i shared

  1566. with you

  1567. as i got up

  1568. here this

  1569. morning

  1570. i tremble

  1571. to preach

  1572. god's word

  1573. and it doesn't

  1574. matter if this

  1575. room is filled

  1576. or if there's

  1577. only five people

  1578. to speak of the

  1579. word of god

  1580. and to say

  1581. this is what

  1582. it means

  1583. just causes

  1584. me to

  1585. shudder

  1586. the weight

  1587. of that type

  1588. of thing

  1589. i need

  1590. god's

  1591. intervention

  1592. to help

  1593. me do

  1594. it

  1595. rightly

  1596. it is my

  1597. prayer that

  1598. when i

  1599. err you

  1600. just forget

  1601. about what

  1602. i said

  1603. what a blessing

  1604. that is

  1605. that's actually

  1606. happened

  1607. i've actually

  1608. said i'm

  1609. really sorry

  1610. that i said

  1611. this and people

  1612. have gone

  1613. you didn't

  1614. say that

  1615. i'm like

  1616. i'll show

  1617. you the

  1618. note

  1619. i did

  1620. i did

  1621. in fact

  1622. say it

  1623. but people

  1624. just forget

  1625. it

  1626. altogether

  1627. it's a

  1628. very humbling

  1629. experience

  1630. to walk

  1631. into these

  1632. types of

  1633. situations

  1634. and to

  1635. share

  1636. in this

  1637. way

  1638. because

  1639. god's

  1640. power

  1641. is at

  1642. work

  1643. in it

  1644. i want

  1645. us to

  1646. as

  1647. disciples

  1648. have

  1649. the

  1650. mind

  1651. of

  1652. paul

  1653. he says

  1654. in

  1655. first

  1656. corinthians

  1657. three

  1658. five

  1659. through

  1660. seven

  1661. what

  1662. then

  1663. is

  1664. apollos

  1665. what

  1666. is

  1667. paul

  1668. servants

  1669. through

  1670. whom

  1671. you

  1672. believe

  1673. as

  1674. the

  1675. lord

  1676. assigned

  1677. to

  1678. each

  1679. i

  1680. planted

  1681. apollos

  1682. watered

  1683. but

  1684. god

  1685. gave

  1686. the

  1687. growth

  1688. so

  1689. neither

  1690. he

  1691. who

  1692. plants

  1693. nor

  1694. he

  1695. who

  1696. waters

  1697. is

  1698. anything

  1699. but

  1700. only

  1701. god

  1702. who

  1703. gives

  1704. the

  1705. growth

  1706. that's

  1707. massively

  1708. humbling

  1709. to see

  1710. people

  1711. grow

  1712. in

  1713. faith

  1714. by

  1715. the

  1716. work

  1717. that

  1718. i

  1719. do

  1720. it

  1721. causes

  1722. me

  1723. to

  1724. give

  1725. all

  1726. praise

  1727. in

  1728. honor

  1729. to

  1730. him

  1731. because

  1732. i'm

  1733. an

  1734. idiot

  1735. but

  1736. he

  1737. uses

  1738. me

  1739. to

  1740. accomplish

  1741. his

  1742. will

  1743. in

  1744. many

  1745. ways

  1746. in

  1747. many

  1748. cases

  1749. you

  1750. may

  1751. not

  1752. think

  1753. that

  1754. you

  1755. have

  1756. anything

  1757. to

  1758. offer

  1759. anyone

  1760. else

  1761. you

  1762. may

  1763. doubt

  1764. your

  1765. ability

  1766. !

  1767. you

  1768. in

  1769. many

  1770. ways

  1771. you

  1772. must

  1773. check

  1774. the

  1775. condition

  1776. of

  1777. your

  1778. heart

  1779. because

  1780. what

  1781. you're

  1782. really

  1783. doing

  1784. is

  1785. denying

  1786. that

  1787. god

  1788. is

  1789. powerful

  1790. to

  1791. work

  1792. in

  1793. you

  1794. to

  1795. accomplish

  1796. anything

  1797. in

  1798. anyone

  1799. else's

  1800. life

  1801. you're

  1802. saying

  1803. that

  1804. he

  1805. can't

  1806. possibly

  1807. use

  1808. you

  1809. to

  1810. do

  1811. his

  1812. work

  1813. i'll

  1814. tell

  1815. you

  1816. this

  1817. god

  1818. can

  1819. do

  1820. whatever

  1821. he

  1822. wants

  1823. to

  1824. it

  1825. is

  1826. good

  1827. to

  1828. be

  1829. humble

  1830. it

  1831. is

  1832. good

  1833. to

  1834. walk

  1835. into

  1836. that

  1837. desiring

  1838. you

  1839. will

  1840. rely

  1841. on

  1842. his

  1843. grace

  1844. there's

  1845. much

  1846. promise

  1847. in

  1848. our

  1849. church

  1850. i

  1851. in

  1852. earthly

  1853. terms

  1854. in

  1855. human

  1856. terms

  1857. am

  1858. intimidated

  1859. by

  1860. some

  1861. of

  1862. the

  1863. people

  1864. in

  1865. our

  1866. church

  1867. charles

  1868. spurgeon

  1869. once

  1870. said

  1871. a

  1872. wet

  1873. stone

  1874. though

  1875. it

  1876. cannot

  1877. cut

  1878. a

  1879. wet

  1880. stone

  1881. is

  1882. a

  1883. stone

  1884. made

  1885. for

  1886. sharpening

  1887. knives

  1888. a

  1889. wet

  1890. stone

  1891. though

  1892. it

  1895. may

  1896. sharpen

  1897. a

  1899. that

  1900. will

  1901. god

  1902. uses

  1903. us

  1904. in

  1905. all

  1906. of

  1907. our

  1908. various

  1909. ways

  1910. and

  1911. all

  1912. of

  1913. our

  1914. various

  1915. giftings

  1916. even

  1917. in

  1918. our

  1919. inability

  1920. to

  1921. disciple

  1922. people

  1923. so

  1924. as

  1925. a

  1926. discipler

  1927. it's

  1928. incredibly

  1929. humbling

  1930. proverbs

  1931. 1

  1932. 5

  1933. says

  1934. let

  1935. the

  1938. and

  1939. increase

  1940. in

  1941. learning

  1942. and

  1943. the

  1955. in

  1956. your

  1958. eyes

  1959. fear

  1960. the

  1962. and

  1963. turn

  1964. away

  1965. from

  1966. evil

  1967. some

  1968. people

  1969. may

  1970. think

  1971. themselves

  1972. above

  1973. discipleship

  1974. I'm

  1975. not

  1976. you

  1977. guys

  1978. have

  1979. designated

  1980. me

  1981. the

  1982. pastor

  1983. of

  1984. this

  1985. church

  1986. I

  1987. am

  1988. not

  1989. above

  1990. discipleship

  1991. it's

  1992. why

  1993. we

  1994. have

  1995. elders

  1996. in

  1997. our

  1998. church

  1999. I

  2000. need

  2001. a

  2002. peer

  2003. group

  2004. men

  2005. who

  2006. I

  2007. can

  2008. share

  2009. my

  2010. struggles

  2011. with

  2012. and

  2013. who

  2014. can

  2015. admonish

  2016. me

  2017. and

  2018. exhort

  2019. me

  2020. and

  2021. encourage

  2022. me

  2023. it's

  2024. why

  2025. I

  2026. seek

  2027. discipleship

  2028. even

  2029. outside

  2030. of our

  2031. church

  2032. as

  2033. well

  2034. with

  2035. other

  2036. pastors

  2037. there's

  2038. some

  2039. things

  2040. that

  2041. our

  2042. elders

  2043. don't

  2044. fully

  2045. understand

  2046. about

  2047. the

  2048. way

  2049. I

  2050. walk

  2051. out

  2052. my

  2053. life

  2054. and

  2055. the

  2056. things

  2057. that

  2058. I

  2059. do

  2060. in

  2061. the

  2062. day

  2063. to

  2064. day

  2065. and

  2066. so

  2067. I

  2068. try to

  2069. fellowship

  2070. with

  2071. other

  2072. pastors

  2073. as well

  2074. that can

  2075. invest

  2076. in me

  2077. if you

  2078. think that

  2079. you're

  2080. above

  2081. discipleship

  2082. it's at

  2083. this

  2084. very

  2085. point

  2086. that

  2087. you

  2088. need

  2089. discipleship

  2090. you

  2091. need

  2092. someone

  2093. to speak

  2094. to you

  2095. about

  2096. your

  2097. pride

  2098. and

  2099. your

  2100. self

  2101. righteousness

  2102. we're

  2103. so often

  2104. blind

  2105. to these

  2106. types

  2107. of

  2108. things

  2109. we

  2110. need

  2111. someone

  2112. else

  2113. to

  2114. look

  2115. into

  2116. peer

  2117. into

  2118. our

  2119. hearts

  2120. and

  2121. tell us

  2122. how

  2123. horribly

  2124. deceptive

  2125. that

  2126. they

  2127. are

  2128. all

  2129. of

  2130. us

  2131. need

  2132. to

  2133. be

  2134. in

  2135. some

  2136. process

  2137. of

  2138. discipling

  2139. another

  2140. or

  2141. being

  2142. discipled

  2143. ourselves

  2144. this

  2145. great

  2146. complex

  2147. network

  2148. that we

  2149. are

  2150. as a

  2151. congregation

  2152. we need

  2153. to be

  2154. doing

  2155. this

  2156. in

  2157. this

  2158. large

  2159. general

  2160. sense

  2161. but I

  2162. would

  2163. also

  2164. encourage

  2165. it

  2166. to

  2167. happen

  2168. in

  2169. that

  2170. more

  2171. small

  2172. programmatic

  2173. one to

  2174. one

  2175. or a

  2176. couple

  2177. sense

  2178. to be

  2179. getting

  2180. together

  2181. and

  2182. pressing

  2183. at each

  2184. other

  2185. in the

  2186. truth

  2187. and

  2188. fifthly

  2189. and

  2190. finally

  2191. discipleship

  2192. is for

  2193. the glory

  2194. of God

  2195. in all

  2196. of these

  2197. things

  2198. Paul says

  2199. in

  2200. Titus

  2201. verse 13

  2202. that we

  2203. are waiting

  2204. for our

  2205. blessed

  2206. hope

  2207. the appearing

  2208. of the

  2209. glory

  2210. of our

  2211. great

  2212. God

  2213. and

  2214. Savior

  2215. Jesus

  2216. Christ

  2217. who

  2218. gave

  2219. himself

  2220. for

  2221. us

  2222. to

  2223. redeem

  2224. us

  2225. from

  2226. all

  2227. lawlessness

  2228. and to

  2229. purify

  2230. for

  2231. himself

  2232. a

  2233. people

  2234. for

  2235. his

  2236. own

  2237. possession

  2238. who

  2239. are

  2240. zealous

  2241. for

  2242. good

  2243. works

  2244. the

  2245. gospel

  2246. is

  2247. not

  2248. firstly

  2249. about

  2250. you

  2251. the

  2252. gospel

  2253. is

  2254. firstly

  2255. about

  2256. God

  2257. and

  2258. his

  2259. glory

  2260. Jesus

  2261. Christ

  2262. came

  2263. we

  2264. are

  2265. the

  2266. recipients

  2267. of

  2268. his

  2269. perfect

  2270. life

  2271. he

  2272. lived

  2273. the

  2274. life

  2275. that

  2276. we

  2277. could

  2278. not

  2279. he

  2280. did

  2281. not

  2282. transgress

  2283. the

  2284. law

  2285. spotless

  2286. perfect

  2287. sacrifice

  2288. and

  2289. he

  2290. went

  2291. a

  2292. step

  2293. beyond

  2294. and

  2295. he

  2296. paid

  2297. the

  2298. price

  2299. for

  2300. our

  2301. sin

  2302. he

  2303. took

  2304. all

  2305. of

  2306. the

  2307. condemnation

  2308. that

  2309. was

  2310. due

  2311. to

  2312. us

  2313. rightly

  2314. do

  2315. us

  2316. and

  2317. he

  2318. bore

  2319. it

  2320. in

  2321. himself

  2322. God

  2323. being

  2324. perfectly

  2325. just

  2326. could

  2327. not

  2328. just

  2329. simply

  2330. dismiss

  2331. sin

  2332. he

  2333. had

  2334. to

  2335. punish

  2336. it

  2337. he

  2338. punished

  2339. it

  2340. in

  2341. the

  2342. person

  2343. redeem

  2344. us

  2345. to

  2346. deliver

  2347. us

  2348. from

  2349. the

  2350. punishment

  2351. that

  2352. was

  2353. due

  2354. us

  2355. but

  2356. he

  2357. brought

  2358. us

  2359. along

  2360. beyond

  2361. that

  2362. to

  2363. redeem

  2364. us

  2365. from

  2366. lawlessness

  2367. to

  2368. purify

  2369. a

  2370. people

  2371. for

  2372. his

  2373. possession

  2374. who

  2375. are

  2376. zealous

  2377. for

  2378. good

  2380. a

  2381. people

  2382. who

  2383. are

  2384. about

  2385. his

  2386. exaltation

  2387. this

  2388. is

  2389. why

  2390. we

  2391. exist

  2392. all

  2393. of

  2394. that

  2395. everything

  2396. that

  2397. we've

  2398. mentioned

  2399. today

  2400. all

  2401. the

  2402. things

  2403. we've

  2404. mentioned

  2405. over

  2406. the

  2407. last

  2408. three

  2409. weeks

  2410. all

  2411. of

  2412. this

  2413. is

  2414. about

  2415. the

  2416. glory

  2417. of

  2418. God

  2419. in

  2420. similar

  2421. language

  2422. Peter

  2423. writes

  2424. in

  2425. 1st

  2426. Peter

  2427. 2

  2428. 9

  2429. but

  2430. you

  2431. are

  2432. a

  2433. chosen

  2434. race

  2435. a

  2436. royal

  2437. priesthood

  2438. a

  2441. a

  2442. people

  2443. for

  2444. his

  2447. why

  2448. that

  2449. you

  2450. may

  2451. proclaim

  2452. the

  2453. excellencies

  2454. !

  2455. of

  2456. him

  2457. who

  2458. called

  2459. you

  2460. out

  2461. of

  2462. darkness

  2463. into

  2464. his

  2465. marvelous

  2466. light

  2467. he

  2468. has

  2469. made

  2470. us

  2471. who

  2472. we

  2473. are

  2474. so

  2475. that

  2476. we

  2477. can

  2478. tell

  2479. this

  2480. world

  2481. about

  2482. him

  2483. right

  2484. some

  2485. will

  2486. respond

  2487. he

  2488. is

  2489. the

  2490. one

  2491. that

  2492. plows

  2493. the

  2494. field

  2495. he

  2496. is

  2497. the

  2498. one

  2499. that

  2500. makes

  2501. the

  2502. soil

  2503. causes

  2504. the

  2505. seed

  2506. to

  2507. grow

  2508. we

  2509. are

  2510. just

  2511. meant

  2512. to

  2513. scatter

  2514. it

  2515. right

  2516. to

  2517. exalt

  2518. him

  2519. in

  2520. the

  2521. way

  2522. in

  2523. which

  2524. we

  2525. live

  2526. and

  2527. the

  2528. way

  2529. in

  2530. which

  2531. we

  2532. speak

  2533. to

  2534. go

  2535. far

  2536. and

  2537. wide

  2538. we

  2539. are

  2540. to

  2541. be

  2542. disciples

  2543. who

  2544. make

  2545. disciples

  2546. who

  2547. make

  2548. disciples

  2549. who

  2550. make

  2551. disciples

  2552. hastening

  2553. the

  2554. day

  2555. to

  2556. the

  2557. ends

  2558. of

  2559. we

  2560. have

  2561. completed

  2562. the

  2563. number

  2564. of

  2565. the

  2566. church

  2567. he

  2568. will

  2569. come

  2570. back

  2571. and

  2572. judge

  2573. the

  2574. world

  2575. and

  2576. he

  2577. will

  2578. reign

  2579. forever

  2580. and

  2581. ever

  2582. and

  2583. ever

  2584. I

  2585. hope

  2586. this

  2587. morning

  2588. that

  2589. with

  2590. confidence

  2591. you

  2592. can

  2593. say

  2594. that

  2595. you're

  2596. part

  2597. of

  2598. that

  2599. kingdom

  2600. you

  2601. know

  2602. without

  2603. a

  2604. doubt

  2605. that

  2606. you

  2607. are

  2608. a

  2609. disciple

  2610. of

  2611. Jesus

  2612. Christ

  2613. is

  2614. all

  2615. of

  2616. this

  2617. bearing

  2618. down

  2619. on

  2620. you

  2621. with

  2622. massive

  2623. !

  2624. conviction

  2625. It

  2626. may

  2627. be

  2628. that

  2629. you're

  2630. not

  2631. or

  2632. that

  2633. you

  2634. just

  2635. simply

  2636. need

  2637. to

  2638. repent

  2639. of

  2640. your

  2641. own

  2642. self

  2643. sinterness

  2644. and

  2645. turn

  2646. back

  2647. to

  2648. following

  2649. Christ

  2650. either

  2651. way

  2652. the

  2653. call

  2654. is

  2655. the

  2656. same

  2657. repent

  2658. and

  2659. believe

  2660. repent

  2661. and

  2662. believe

  2663. repent

  2664. and

  2665. believe

  2666. let's

  2667. pray

  2668. together
