  1. Please open up your copy of God's Word to the Gospel according to Mark.

  2. ! We're in chapter 14.

  3. We're continuing our verse-by-verse exposition through Mark's Gospel.

  4. ! Before we get there, I had intended to make an announcement at the beginning, but I was kind of getting some conflicted reports.

  5. Those of you who have been around for a while know that this building has some water issues.

  6. We're on a well, and sometimes the water doesn't work so well.

  7. Don't pun intended.

  8. And this seems to be one of those mornings for us, and so it wasn't working, and then it was working, and again, now it seems to not be working.

  9. And most of us have dealt with that before, so it seems to be kind of working at the moment.

  10. So, just as a heads-up for whatever you may want to go do in the building concerning water,

  11. to be aware that it may or may not work at the moment that you try.

  12. But, I'm glad that the reason that our church exists is for the supremacy of Christ and not for the beauty of a building.

  13. As we have issues like this, it's just my constant recitation in my head,

  14. but we have no debt, but we have no debt, but we have no debt, and we praise God for that.

  15. So, it is a blessing to us.

  16. Our text for today is Mark chapter 14, verses 66 through 72.

    Mark 14:66–72

  17. And as Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant girls of the high priest came,

  18. and seeing Peter warming himself, she looked at him and said,

  19. You also are with the Nazarene Jesus.

  20. But he denied it, saying, I neither know nor understand what you mean.

  21. And he went out into the gateway, and the rooster crowed.

  22. And the servant girl saw him and began again to say to the bystanders,

  23. This man is one of them.

  24. But again, he denied it.

  25. And after a little while, the bystanders again said to Peter,

  26. Certainly you are one of them, for you are a Galilean.

  27. But he began to invoke a curse on himself and to swear,

  28. I do not know this man of whom you speak.

  29. And immediately the rooster crowed a second time.

  30. And Peter remembered how Jesus had said to him,

  31. Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.

  32. And he broke down and wept.

  33. This is God's word to us, written for his glory and our good.

  34. We would all do well to listen to it in order to obey its promises,

  35. excuse me, believe its promises, and obey its commands.

  36. Let's pray together.

  37. Father, we again praise you for this morning and the opportunity for us to come together as a church.

  38. A people called out of the world and called together for your mission.

  39. We thank you, Father, that you have not left us alone,

  40. but you have given to us a helper, the Spirit,

  41. and you have given us your word,

  42. the tool that he employs in our lives to shape us and change us for your glory.

  43. And so we would ask this day that you would do this,

  44. that he would be alive and active in my speaking and in all of our hearing.

  45. That the things that we hear today will not merely be taken into our minds,

  46. but they will be applied to our hearts.

  47. That all of us will be changed from one degree of glory to another.

  48. That we will leave this place proclaiming the excellencies of him who called us out of darkness

  49. and into his marvelous light.

  50. We pray this in Christ's name.

  51. Amen.

  52. So in our text this morning,

  53. Mark records for us the failure of Peter following Jesus' arrest,

  54. just as Jesus had predicted.

  55. But before we address Peter's failure, and we will,

  56. let's recall together the failure of our author of the Gospel of Mark.

  57. I know that many of you weren't with us when we first began working through this Gospel account.

  58. And in the very first sermon that we worked through together,

  59. I told you a little bit about who Mark is.

  60. And he's an interesting character,

  61. and there's much for us to learn and to be encouraged by his life.

  62. So with me, if you will, just for a brief break from Mark,

  63. you can mark it, no pun intended, once again,

  64. turn to the book of Acts,

  65. and we're going to begin in chapter 12.

  66. Apparently when I'm tired I speak in puns.

  67. We did this once before, so I'm going to do it rather quickly,

  68. but I just want you to see this together.

  69. I believe that Mark's desire to record what Peter did is fueled by his own experience.

  70. So Acts chapter 12, verses 1 through 5.

    Acts 12:1–5

  71. About that time, Herod the king laid violent hands on some who belonged to the church.

  72. He killed James, the brother of John, with a sword.

  73. And when he saw that it pleased the Jews, he proceeded to arrest Peter also.

  74. This was during the days of unleavened bread.

  75. And when he had seized him, he put him in prison,

  76. delivering him over to four squads of soldiers to guard him,

  77. intending after the Passover to bring him out to the people.

  78. So Peter was kept in prison,

  79. but earnest prayer for him was made to God by the church.

  80. So Peter is imprisoned by his faith.

  81. The persecution of the churches is really on the upswing at this time.

  82. And as the church is praying for him,

  83. Peter is delivered from prison by an angel later there in Acts 12.

  84. Peter recognizes it was an angel.

  85. Verse 12 records this for us of the Lord that led him out of prison.

  86. And it says, verse 12,

  87. When he realized this, he went to the house of Mary, the mother of John,

  88. whose other name was Mark,

  89. where many were gathered together and were praying.

  90. And so this is the Mark that wrote the gospel of Mark,

  91. or we could call him John Mark if we would like.

  92. I'm Joseph Nathan, if you don't know that.

  93. And I go by Nathan.

  94. So here we have John Mark going by Mark in many cases.

  95. I'll go a little further in that chapter to verse 25.

  96. And Barnabas and Saul, soon to be Paul, or was Paul at this time,

  97. returned from Jerusalem when they had completed their service,

  98. bringing with them John, whose other name was Mark.

  99. So they picked up a companion in their travels,

  100. and this is John Mark,

  101. who's now traveling with Barnabas and Saul or Paul.

  102. Acts 3, verses 1-5.

    Acts 3:1–5

  103. Now there were in the church at Antioch prophets and teachers,

  104. Barnabas, Simeon, who was called Niger,

  105. Lucius of Cyrene,

  106. Menaion, a lifelong friend of Herod the Tetrarch,

  107. and Saul.

  108. While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting,

  109. the Holy Spirit said,

  110. Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.

  111. Then after fasting and praying,

  112. they laid their hands on them and sent them off.

  113. So being sent out by the Holy Spirit,

  114. they went down to Seleucia,

  115. and from there they sailed to Cyprus.

  116. When they arrived at Salamis,

  117. they proclaimed the word of God in the synagogue of the Jews,

  118. and they had John to assist them.

  119. So Barnabas and Paul set aside for a work to the Gentiles.

  120. Of course, they still visited the Jewish synagogues and preached to the Jews,

  121. and John Mark is with them.

  122. Now in verse 13 of chapter 13,

  123. in case you lost where we were at.

  124. Now Paul and his companions set sail from Paphos

  125. and came to Perga in Pamphylia.

  126. And John left them and returned to Jerusalem.

  127. So John Mark goes with them on this journey,

  128. the beginning of it,

  129. and as they're about to go on to another stage,

  130. he leaves and returns to Jerusalem.

  131. In the account so far,

  132. that's all we know.

  133. Just that he left.

  134. We don't know why he left,

  135. but we find out later the very reason.

  136. Turn a couple of chapters over to Acts chapter 15.

    Acts 15 chapter mention

  137. And after some days,

  138. Paul said to Barnabas,

  139. Let us return and visit the brothers in every city

  140. where we proclaim the word of the Lord

  141. and see how they are.

  142. This is Acts 15.37 now.

  143. Now Barnabas wanted to take with them

  144. John called Mark.

  145. He's actually the cousin of Barnabas.

  146. But Paul thought best not to take with them

  147. one who had withdrawn from them in Pamphylia

  148. and had not gone with them to the work.

  149. And there arose a sharp disagreement

  150. so that they separated from each other.

  151. Barnabas took Mark with him

  152. and sailed away to Cyprus.

  153. And this is when Paul picks up Silas in his journey.

  154. So there becomes a division between Paul and Barnabas

  155. because Barnabas really wanted John and Mark

  156. to go with them on the journey.

  157. But Paul said, No, he abandoned us.

  158. He bailed out on us.

  159. This man was fickle.

  160. Likely due to fear of the advance

  161. and the preaching of the gospel

  162. and the things that were happening in his time,

  163. he went back to Jerusalem.

  164. And Paul wants nothing to do with him

  165. at this point in his journey.

  166. Barnabas so convinced,

  167. Barnabas seems to be the second chance guy,

  168. John Mark is now ready,

  169. that he goes with him.

  170. We don't know exactly where

  171. Barnabas disappears from the New Testament narrative

  172. for two years,

  173. with nothing about the timeline,

  174. for two whole years after this incident.

  175. John Mark disappears from the biblical text

  176. for ten years.

  177. But he does reappear.

  178. He reemerges.

  179. Now after some time,

  180. Paul is in prison for preaching the gospel.

  181. And during his first imprisonment,

  182. he writes his letter to the Ephesians,

  183. his letter to the Colossians,

  184. the letter to Philemon,

  185. and to the Philippians.

  186. And we see in two of those,

  187. particularly in Colossians and in Philemon,

  188. Paul's companion in prison

  189. is none other than John Mark.

  190. So they, by some circumstance,

  191. have rejoined one another

  192. and either been thrown in prison together

  193. or found each other once again in prison.

  194. In Paul's second imprisonment,

  195. one of his last letters he wrote,

  196. 2 Timothy 4.11,

  197. he writes this,

  198. Do your best to come to me soon,

  199. writing to Timothy,

  200. for Demas, in love with his present world,

  201. has deserted me and gone to Thessalonica.

  202. Crescens has gone to Galatia.

  203. Titus to Dalmatia.

  204. Luke alone is with me.

  205. And then the instruction he gives to Timothy

  206. is get Mark.

  207. This is John Mark he's referring to.

  208. Get Mark and bring him with you,

  209. for he is very useful to me for ministry.

  210. So we see this young disciple

  211. that's taken on this journey to begin with

  212. and bails out on the Gospel mission,

  213. likely for fear of what would happen to him,

  214. now re-engaged in Gospel ministry

  215. in a major way as a fellow servant

  216. along with Paul,

  217. later pinning for us

  218. the Gospel account that we've so richly enjoyed

  219. over this past year.

  220. The redemption that is pictured in this

  221. that has to be pieced together,

  222. but yet we find it all the same.

  223. Sinners and recovering sinners

  224. are the only type of people that there are.

  225. So there's much space for us this day

  226. in even considering Peter's denials.

  227. We think about Mark's life,

  228. and later Peter's life,

  229. the things that will be accomplished

  230. by God through him

  231. to reflect upon our own lives

  232. and the ways in which we've failed our Lord.

  233. The ways we've turned our back on Him.

  234. The ways that we have denied Him

  235. to receive joy and encouragement

  236. from the lives of Mark and of Peter.

  237. Now in last week's text,

  238. Mark places Peter in the courtyard of the house

  239. where Jesus' trial is occurring

  240. on the night of His arrest.

  241. And if you'll look back in Mark 14,

    Mark 14:53

  242. verse 53 and 54 reads,

  243. And they led Jesus to the high priest.

  244. And all the chief priests and the elders

  245. and the scribes came together.

  246. And Peter had followed Him at a distance

  247. right into the courtyard of the high priest.

  248. And He was sitting with the guards

  249. and warming Himself at the fire.

  250. Now the other disciples,

  251. it would seem,

  252. have already fled at this time.

  253. We have no record,

  254. no account of them.

  255. Although John's Gospel account

  256. does tell us that the way

  257. that Peter got into the courtyard

  258. is that John was known

  259. by the family of the high priest.

  260. So it's likely that John went along

  261. and said,

  262. Hey, it's okay to let him in.

  263. But it would seem that John's already

  264. left the scene at this point.

  265. The disciples fleeing is a fulfillment

  266. of Zechariah 13.7,

  267. the last half anyway,

  268. which Jesus quotes in Mark 14.7,

  269. Strike the shepherd and the sheep

  270. will be scattered.

  271. So we find Peter having followed at a distance,

  272. having been so bold in the Garden of Gethsemane

  273. that he strikes the ear off of one of the temple guard,

  274. rebuked by Jesus for it.

  275. And then he follows from afar,

  276. wants to be near what's going on.

  277. And this trial is taking place

  278. in the home of the high priest,

  279. which is Caiaphas in this year.

  280. Likely also the home of Annas,

  281. also called the high priest.

  282. He is Caiaphas' father-in-law.

  283. That title never passed away from someone

  284. once they served in the role of high priest.

  285. And Annas is kind of like

  286. the godfather of the Sanhedrin.

  287. He has been appointing high priest.

  288. People do what Annas says.

  289. So there's been a trial before Annas,

  290. which is not recorded in Mark.

  291. And then he's been delivered from Annas,

  292. Jesus has,

  293. to Caiaphas and the Sanhedrin.

  294. This would be 70 men plus the one

  295. being the high priest.

  296. 71 men that hold this sort of trial,

  297. this perversion of justice.

  298. We talked about last week.

  299. We saw the contradiction,

  300. the juxtaposition of the false witnesses

  301. against Jesus' faithful witness

  302. to who he was.

  303. And this is where we find,

  304. as this is happening upstairs

  305. in one of the apartments

  306. of this massive home,

  307. Peter's sitting in the courtyard,

  308. warming himself with the temple guard

  309. around a fire.

  310. John MacArthur says of Peter,

  311. he was caught between fear and faith.

  312. He was caught between love and terror,

  313. between courage and cowardice.

  314. Certainly, Peter loved our Lord

  315. and followed Him because of that.

  316. There's some zeal in Peter

  317. that we certainly should admire,

  318. that he even was willing

  319. to follow that far,

  320. that he was willing to sit outside

  321. in the very home,

  322. enter through a gate,

  323. and be in that place.

  324. But yet he fails.

  325. Now remember who we're talking about,

  326. this Peter.

  327. Back in Mark 8,

  328. beginning of verse 27,

  329. Mark records,

  330. And Jesus went on with His disciples

  331. to the villages of Caesarea Philippi.

  332. And on the way,

  333. He asked His disciples,

  334. Who do people say that I am?

  335. And they told Him,

  336. John the Baptist.

  337. And others say,

  338. Elijah.

  339. And others,

  340. one of the prophets.

  341. And He asked them,

  342. But who do you say that I am?

  343. And it's Peter that answers Him,

  344. You are the Christ.

  345. And in saying that,

  346. that phrase that He's saying,

  347. He is saying that you are the Son of God.

  348. You are the Messiah,

  349. the One that has come to take away

  350. the sins of the world.

  351. Our prophet, our priest,

  352. and our King.

  353. You are the Christ.

  354. Matthew's account adds,

  355. And Jesus answers him,

  356. Blessed are you,

  357. Simon Barjona,

  358. for flesh and blood

  359. has not revealed this to you,

  360. but my Father,

  361. who is in heaven.

  362. So,

  363. God Himself has revealed this truth

  364. to Peter.

  365. And I tell you,

  366. you are Peter.

  367. And on this rock,

  368. I will build my church.

  369. And the gates of hell

  370. shall not prevail against it.

  371. The truth that Jesus is the Christ,

  372. is the rock that He'll build His church on.

  373. He says,

  374. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven,

  375. and whenever you bind on earth,

  376. shall be bound in heaven.

  377. And whenever you loose on earth,

  378. shall be loose in heaven.

  379. This is the Peter

  380. that we're talking about.

  381. And so,

  382. set against the backdrop

  383. of Peter's bold proclamation

  384. of Jesus as the Christ,

  385. Mark tells us of his failure

  386. on the night of Jesus' arrest.

  387. Charles Spurgeon wrote of this text,

  388. This fall of Peter

  389. is doubtless intended

  390. to be a lesson

  391. to the whole church of Christ.

  392. It is recorded for our learning

  393. that we may be kept

  394. from like sorrowful overthrow.

  395. It is a beacon

  396. mercifully set up in Scripture

  397. to prevent others

  398. making shipwreck.

  399. So we must pay attention.

  400. It's important that we stop and look,

  401. not just as a mark in Peter's life,

  402. but what are we meant

  403. to learn and to understand?

  404. We must understand

  405. by this record.

  406. And to do that,

  407. we must examine the condition

  408. of Peter's heart,

  409. which ultimately led

  410. to these denials.

  411. You see,

  412. there must have been something

  413. at work in him

  414. to cause him to betray his Lord, right?

  415. He wasn't on top of the mountain

  416. and suddenly in the valley

  417. there was something happening in him

  418. and we have record

  419. and account of what that was.

  420. Remember that Peter had given up

  421. everything to follow Christ.

  422. He had sacrificed everything

  423. and he'd been with him now

  424. three plus years

  425. bringing him to this point.

  426. What is happening

  427. in the heart of Peter

  428. that would cause him

  429. to deny Christ

  430. at this time?

  431. There are at least three things

  432. we should observe.

  433. At least.

  434. There may be more,

  435. but at least three things

  436. we should observe

  437. that we're going to do this morning

  438. lest we also fail

  439. in this way.

  440. Firstly,

  441. and primarily,

  442. Peter was prideful.

  443. Peter was self-sufficient

  444. in his own mind.

  445. None of us really are self-sufficient.

  446. All of us are sustained

  447. by the power of God.

  448. All of us are very, very, very finite

  449. and so desperately in need

  450. of an infinite God.

  451. Peter didn't recognize

  452. this was the case.

  453. He was prideful.

  454. Mark 14, 26-31 says,

  455. And when they had sung a hymn,

  456. they went out to the Mount of Olives.

  457. And Jesus said to them,

  458. You will all fall away.

  459. For it is written,

  460. this is from Zechariah,

  461. I will strike the shepherd

  462. and the sheep will be scattered.

  463. But after I am raised up,

  464. I will go before you to Galilee.

  465. Peter said to him,

  466. listen to the words

  467. that Peter responds to Christ.

  468. Jesus Christ, the Son of God,

  469. by His own admission,

  470. has said,

  471. You will all fall away.

  472. This will come to pass.

  473. And Peter responds to Him,

  474. Even though they all fall away,

  475. I will not.

  476. And Jesus said to him,

  477. Truly, I tell you,

  478. this very night before the rooster crows twice,

  479. you will deny Me three times.

  480. But He said emphatically,

  481. If I must die with you,

  482. I will not deny you.

  483. And they all said the same.

  484. You see the pride there.

  485. Jesus is telling them

  486. the very thing that will come to pass.

  487. And He's having nothing of it.

  488. Not believing His Lord

  489. and the prediction that He's giving to Him.

  490. This man has seen Jesus accomplish

  491. amazing things.

  492. He has established His authority

  493. over sickness.

  494. He's established His authority over death.

  495. He's raised people from the dead.

  496. He's calmed storms with His voice.

  497. He has forgiven sin.

  498. Amazing.

  499. Amazing things.

  500. And He says a simple thing to Him.

  501. And He is so full of Himself.

  502. He is so arrogant

  503. and so self-sufficient

  504. that He says,

  505. I will not.

  506. I will not deny you.

  507. Are we not this way so often?

  508. Proverbs 16.

  509. Proverbs 16.

  510. 18 says,

  511. Pride goes before destruction

  512. and a haughty spirit

  513. before a fall.

  514. Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 10.

  515. 12,

  516. Therefore let anyone

  517. who thinks that he stands

  518. take heed

  519. lest he fall.

  520. Beloved,

  521. we are always

  522. at all times

  523. in desperate need

  524. of the intervening work of God

  525. on our behalf.

  526. There are certainly

  527. times in our life

  528. that this is

  529. exclamart.

  530. I just made that word up.

  531. There is an exclamation mark

  532. placed on this

  533. at times in our lives.

  534. Let me give you a full sentence

  535. to explain what I meant

  536. by exclamart.

  537. Punctuated,

  538. I think is what I was trying to say.

  539. God's providence

  540. reigns at all times.

  541. Moments in our life

  542. were made very,

  543. very aware of this.

  544. Daniel Gentry,

  545. a member of our church,

  546. and I have been

  547. looking toward

  548. and praying for

  549. the possibility

  550. of our church

  551. doing some work

  552. on the east coast

  553. of Nicaragua.

  554. The west coast

  555. of Nicaragua

  556. is the developed

  557. part of Nicaragua.

  558. You can get a direct flight

  559. on Delta

  560. from the Atlanta airport

  561. straight into

  562. the Managua airport.

  563. From there,

  564. the normal way

  565. that you get

  566. to the east coast

  567. is you hop on another flight

  568. to a town called Bluefields.

  569. Then you get on a water taxi

  570. that takes you to

  571. the place that we were going,

  572. a place called Pearl Lagoon.

  573. We decided instead,

  574. we had a trip of four,

  575. there were four of us

  576. planning on going

  577. at the time we did this,

  578. that it would be cool

  579. to rent a truck

  580. and drive

  581. to the town of Pearl Lagoon.

  582. We just wanted to have

  583. some flexibility,

  584. not be so dependent

  585. on other people

  586. to give us rides.

  587. We really wanted to be able

  588. to check out the area.

  589. Our trip of four people

  590. quickly became a trip

  591. of two people.

  592. So Daniel and I

  593. flew into

  594. the Managua airport.

  595. Our flight was very,

  596. very late.

  597. We just happened to catch

  598. the Alamo Rent-A-Car

  599. attendant

  600. as she was locking up.

  601. She was the only employee

  602. that spoke any English

  603. for Alamo Rent-A-Car

  604. and Daniel and I

  605. spoke no Spanish.

  606. We stayed across the street

  607. at the Best Western

  608. that night

  609. and the next day

  610. we struck out

  611. across Nicaragua.

  612. A couple of white guys

  613. from Georgia

  614. who don't speak

  615. any Spanish

  616. in a rented truck.

  617. And I was never

  618. not aware

  619. of God's providence

  620. in that trip,

  621. that we made it.

  622. The Alamo Rent-A-Car

  623. attendant told us

  624. that her mother

  625. lived in Bluefields

  626. and that she had never

  627. heard of a road

  628. that went to the place

  629. where we were going.

  630. There were no maps.

  631. We couldn't buy a map

  632. in the place.

  633. And yet,

  634. God sustained us.

  635. God brought back

  636. some of my high school

  637. Spanish

  638. to ask for directions.

  639. Brought in this town

  640. that seemed to be

  641. the dead end

  642. of our trip.

  643. Brought into

  644. in a bizarre way

  645. one English speaker

  646. who used to live

  647. in Roswell, Georgia.

  648. And he gave us

  649. directions to where

  650. we were going.

  651. We are always,

  652. the point I'm making,

  653. we are always,

  654. always, always

  655. in need of him.

  656. Sometimes we know it

  657. more than others,

  658. but we are always

  659. in need.

  660. We never should

  661. be prideful.

  662. I will not,

  663. by the grace of God,

  664. should be the cry

  665. of our hearts.

  666. So Peter was prideful.

  667. Secondly,

  668. Peter failed

  669. to heed the word

  670. of God.

  671. This was fueled

  672. by that very pride,

  673. but Peter failed

  674. to heed

  675. the word

  676. of God.

  677. Jesus had said

  678. to him,

  679. this thing

  680. will come

  681. to pass.

  682. And he doesn't

  683. respond with a,

  684. how do I prevent

  685. that?

  686. You told me a thing

  687. that I will do,

  688. but how can I

  689. not do this?

  690. While Peter's

  691. denials validate

  692. the prophetic

  693. words of Christ,

  694. they certainly serve

  695. in that regard,

  696. prophecy does serve

  697. as a warning.

  698. We shouldn't just say,

  699. oh, well that's

  700. going to happen.

  701. Prophecy is a warning.

  702. And Peter would have

  703. done very well

  704. to pay attention

  705. to it.

  706. When Jonah preached

  707. the word of God

  708. to the Ninevites,

  709. Jonah 3.4 says,

  710. yet forty days

  711. and Nineveh

  712. shall be overthrown.

  713. This was the message

  714. that God had given

  715. to Jonah

  716. to preach

  717. to the whole city

  718. of Nineveh.

  719. What did they do?

  720. They repented.

  721. They turned

  722. from their sin

  723. and they repented.

  724. And Jonah 3.10

  725. records,

  726. when God saw

  727. what they did,

  728. how they turned

  729. from their evil way,

  730. God relented

  731. of the disaster

  732. that He had said

  733. He would do to them

  734. and He did not do it.

  735. So,

  736. brings a prophecy

  737. that they respond

  738. appropriately to

  739. and He doesn't do

  740. the thing

  741. that He said

  742. He would do.

  743. Proverbs 6.23

  744. says,

  745. For the commandment

  746. is a lamp

  747. and the teaching

  748. a light.

  749. And the reproofs

  750. of discipline

  751. are the way

  752. of life.

  753. Our last memory verse,

  754. children,

  755. I'll leave you away.

  756. 2 Timothy 3.16

  757. All Scripture

  758. is breathed out

  759. by God

  760. and profitable

  761. for teaching,

  762. for reproof,

  763. for correction,

  764. and for training

  765. in righteousness.

  766. Verse 17

  767. goes on to say

  768. that the man of God

  769. may be complete,

  770. equipped

  771. for every good work.

  772. Peter would have done well

  773. to listen to the words

  774. of Christ,

  775. to have paid attention

  776. to the warning

  777. that He was giving to him

  778. and we do the same.

  779. The Scriptures contain

  780. many warnings.

  781. Let's look at just a few.

  782. What do you say?

  783. Turn with me

  784. to the book of Hebrews.

  785. I'm going to show you

  786. four warnings

  787. just from the book of Hebrews.

  788. Hebrews.

  789. Hebrews.

  790. Hebrews.

  791. We don't know

  792. with certainty

  793. who wrote

  794. the book of Hebrews,

  795. but we do know

  796. that it was written

  797. to Jewish Christians

  798. who were tempted

  799. to deny Christ.

  800. In their minds,

  801. they had added Jesus

  802. to their religion.

  803. They're still worshipping

  804. the same God,

  805. but they had included Jesus

  806. into this equation.

  807. We're following Him.

  808. And things had gotten

  809. tough for them.

  810. The Jews weren't being

  811. persecuted the way they were.

  812. The Jews weren't being

  813. thrown in prison.

  814. The Jews weren't having

  815. their property plundered.

  816. The Jews weren't being killed.

  817. So it's tempting

  818. to go back to Judaism

  819. to deny Christ in this way.

  820. So let's just look

  821. at a few together.

  822. Hebrews 2.1

  823. The danger of drifting.

  824. The writer of Hebrews says,

  825. Therefore we must pay

  826. much closer attention

  827. to what we have heard

  828. lest we drift away from it.

  829. We must pay attention

  830. to the gospel preached.

  831. We must know

  832. the word of God.

  833. Because if we don't know,

  834. we won't know

  835. when we drift.

  836. It will be imperceivable.

  837. Like a ship without an anchor

  838. and suddenly we're out

  839. in the dangerous sea.

  840. Secondly,

  841. Hebrews 3.12

  842. The danger of not

  843. entering into rest,

  844. the rest of the Lord.

  845. Take care, brothers,

  846. lest there be in any of you

  847. an evil, unbelieving heart

  848. leading you to fall away

  849. from the living God.

  850. Be careful, he's saying.

  851. Be careful that you don't exist

  852. within the church

  853. thinking that you have a good heart

  854. when in fact you have

  855. an evil heart

  856. that's leading you away from God

  857. and not toward Him.

  858. Be careful that you're not

  859. just going through

  860. some religious practice

  861. thinking that somehow

  862. that's credited to you

  863. as righteousness.

  864. But that you need

  865. the righteousness of Christ.

  866. Thirdly,

  867. Hebrews 6.11-12

  868. The danger of not going on

  869. to maturity.

  870. Of staying a child

  871. in the faith.

  872. And we desire each one of you

  873. to show the same earnestness

  874. to have the full assurance of hope

  875. until the end.

  876. So that you may not be sluggish

  877. but imitators of those

  878. who through faith and patience

  879. inherit the promises.

  880. Don't be deceived

  881. thinking that you can just

  882. stay nominal.

  883. That it's okay to make

  884. a profession of faith in Christ

  885. and never grow up in Him.

  886. Those who are born again

  887. grow up in Jesus.

  888. We become mature.

  889. There's a danger in not going on

  890. to maturity.

  891. Fourthly and lastly,

  892. Hebrews 10.26-27

  893. The danger of willful sin.

  894. For if we go on sinning deliberately

  895. after receiving the knowledge

  896. of the truth,

  897. there no longer remains

  898. a sacrifice for sins

  899. but a fearful expectation

  900. of judgment

  901. and a fury of fire

  902. that will consume the adversaries.

  903. What he's saying is

  904. if you are a believer,

  905. you claim to be a believer

  906. and you continue to sin deliberately,

  907. you are denying Christ

  908. in that activity.

  909. You are saying

  910. there's not a sacrifice for sin,

  911. there's only a judgment

  912. that will come.

  913. Heed these warnings, beloved.

  914. We must heed the warnings

  915. of the Scripture.

  916. There are so many places,

  917. not just Hebrews,

  918. so many places,

  919. where we are warned against

  920. and warned against

  921. and warned against.

  922. The Christian life is not easy.

  923. Our flesh is at war

  924. with our spirit.

  925. If we are truly believers,

  926. our flesh does not win.

  927. The general trajectory of our life

  928. will be towards holiness

  929. and away from worldliness.

  930. This must be true

  931. in our lives, beloved.

  932. If it's not true in yours,

  933. you must question your faith.

  934. Test yourselves.

  935. I never want to say any of this

  936. to cause those who are Christians

  937. to ever falter in their belief.

  938. The Scriptures exhort us

  939. to test ourselves.

  940. Are you in the faith?

  941. Can you with confidence say,

  942. my heart is changed.

  943. There are things happening in my life

  944. that would not be happening

  945. if it were not for the work of Christ.

  946. Jesus is purging sin from my life.

  947. And I still sin,

  948. but it breaks my heart.

  949. I sympathize.

  950. I want to be there with Peter

  951. when he breaks down and weeps

  952. and go, I know.

  953. Oh, I know.

  954. Me too.

  955. Oh, how I fail.

  956. But test yourself

  957. that you know you're in the faith.

  958. That you know that God is working you

  959. towards holiness.

  960. So many these days want to have

  961. the promises of the Scripture,

  962. but they do not want to obey

  963. its commands.

  964. I flubbed it up this morning.

  965. I keep goofing things up.

  966. It's okay.

  967. But most mornings when we study together

  968. after reading the text,

  969. I say to you,

  970. this is God's Word to us.

  971. It's written for His glory

  972. and our good.

  973. We would know that,

  974. that it's for our good.

  975. We would all do well to listen to it

  976. in order to believe its promises

  977. and obey its commands.

  978. Peter was prideful.

  979. Peter did not listen to,

  980. he did not heed the Word of God.

  981. If he had, thirdly,

  982. he would have prepared himself.

  983. He would have prepared himself

  984. for the thing that was going to come,

  985. the battle,

  986. as he was going to walk following Jesus,

  987. caught between these two places,

  988. his love for Christ

  989. and his fear of what might happen to him.

  990. And so thirdly,

  991. Peter failed to prepare himself

  992. for battle.

  993. Turn back to Mark 14, verse 32.

    Mark 14:32

  994. After the Last Supper,

  995. Jesus and the disciples leave,

  996. verse 32,

  997. and they went to a place called Gethsemane.

  998. The Garden of Gethsemane.

  999. This is the night of Jesus' rest,

1000. and He says to His disciples,

1001. Sit here while I pray.

1002. And He took with them Peter and James and John

1003. and began to be greatly distressed

  1004. and troubled.

1005. And He said to them,

1006. My soul is very sorrowful,

  1007. even to death.

  1008. Remain here and watch.

1009. And going a little farther,

1010. He fell on the ground and prayed

1011. that if it were possible,

1012. the hour might pass from Him.

  1013. And He said,

  1014. Abba, Father,

1015. all things are possible for You.

1016. Remove this cup from Me,

1017. yet not what I will,

  1018. but what You will.

1019. And He came and found them sleeping.

1020. And He said to Peter,

  1021. Simon,

  1022. are you asleep?

1023. Could you not watch one hour?

  1024. Watch and pray

1025. that you may not enter into temptation.

1026. The Spirit indeed is willing,

1027. but the flesh is weak.

1028. Now, who's He talking to specifically?

  1029. To Peter, right?

1030. The one who He had said,

  1031. You will deny.

1032. All of you will be scattered.

  1033. And Peter says,

  1034. I will not.

  1035. He says,

1036. You will deny Me three times.

  1037. He says,

  1038. Oh no, I won't.

1039. And then He's sleeping in the garden.

1040. And Jesus' exhortation to Him

1041. is that He should be watching and praying

1042. so that He won't enter into temptation

  1043. because His Spirit's willing.

  1044. Oh, I will.

  1045. I won't.

  1046. I won't.

  1047. I won't.

1048. But His flesh is weak.

  1049. Verse 39,

  1050. And again He, Jesus,

  1051. went away and prayed,

  1052. saying the same words.

1053. And again He came and found them sleeping,

1054. for their eyes were very heavy,

1055. and they did not know what to answer Him.

1056. And He came the third time and said to them,

1057. Are you still sleeping and taking your rest?

  1058. It is enough.

  1059. The hour has come.

  1060. Peter,

  1061. had he rightly understood

  1062. what Jesus had said,

1063. if He had heeded His warning,

1064. had he not been so prideful,

1065. he would have been preparing himself

1066. for the battle that he was about to face.

1067. And he failed to do so.

1068. And so we see in our text,

1069. and I know that today was kind of a wander

  1070. from the text,

1071. and we'll come back to it for a moment,

  1072. the three denials.

1073. And they all happen right there together.

1074. A servant girl recognizes Him.

  1075. Right?

1076. She again points out the fact,

  1077. no, I'm pretty sure,

  1078. telling some bystanders,

1079. pretty sure this guy was with Jesus.

1080. And notice that he's left the gate now.

1081. He's away from the temple guard.

1082. He's gone outside of the gate.

  1083. Likely still lingering outside,

1084. waiting to see what will happen to Christ.

1085. And his responses get more and more severe.

1086. Leave me alone about it.

  1087. Leave me alone.

1088. I do not know this man.

1089. I am not to be associated with him.

  1090. And then Peter remembers

1091. what Jesus has said to him,

  1092. and he breaks down,

  1093. and he weeps.

  1094. That next day,

  1095. the same,

  1096. the morning,

  1097. this is happening.

1098. It's the reason that the rooster's crowing.

  1099. It's morning now.

1100. There's going to be some other trials.

1101. Another trial before the Jews,

  1102. just really for show.

  1103. Some trials,

1104. three of them in front of the Gentiles.

1105. We'll get into those things

  1106. in the coming weeks.

1107. And then Jesus will be crucified

  1108. that afternoon.

1109. And this is the way in which

1110. the closing remarks for Peter

1111. before our Lord is crucified.

1112. Do you sympathize with Him?

1113. Can you feel His pain in that?

1114. Ways in which you yourself

  1115. have denied Christ.

1116. Opportunity to speak on His behalf

1117. in this world as an ambassador for Him

1118. that you shrank away from.

  1119. Like Him,

  1120. you cowered.

  1121. I don't know Him.

  1122. I don't know Him.

  1123. Don't think me strange.

  1124. Don't think me weird.

1125. Don't hate me for my faith.

  1126. I sympathize with Him.

  1127. And praise God,

  1128. Peter is restored.

  1129. Praise God,

  1130. Peter is restored.

  1131. Turn to John 21.

  1132. After Jesus' resurrection,

1133. He comes and He has breakfast

1134. with seven of the apostles

1135. by the Sea of Tiberias.

  1136. John 21,

  1137. beginning in verse 15,

  1138. says,

1139. When they had finished breakfast,

1140. Jesus said to Simon Peter,

  1141. Simon, son of John,

1142. do you love Me more than these?

  1143. He said to him,

  1144. Yes, Lord,

1145. you know that I love you.

  1146. He said to him,

  1147. Feed My lambs.

1148. He said to him a second time,

  1149. Simon, son of John,

  1150. do you love Me?

  1151. He said to him,

  1152. Yes, Lord,

1153. you know that I love you.

  1154. He said to him,

  1155. Tend My sheep.

1156. He said to him the third time,

  1157. Simon, son of John,

  1158. do you love Me?

  1159. Peter was grieved

1160. because he had said to him

  1161. the third time,

  1162. Do you love Me?

1163. And he said to him,

  1164. Lord,

  1165. you know everything.

1166. You know that I love you.

  1167. Jesus said to him,

  1168. Feed My sheep.

  1169. Truly, truly,

  1170. I say to you,

  1171. when you were young,

1172. you used to dress yourself

1173. and walk wherever you wanted.

1174. But when you were old,

1175. you will stretch out your hands

1176. and another will dress you

  1177. and carry you

1178. where you do not want to go.

1179. This he said to show

1180. by what kind of death

1181. he was to glorify God.

  1182. And after saying this,

  1183. he said to him,

  1184. Follow Me.

1185. And you note that Jesus gives Peter

  1186. three opportunities

1187. to affirm his love for Him.

1188. Just as he has denied Him three times,

1189. he takes them through a process

  1190. of saying to Him,

  1191. I love you.

  1192. I love you.

  1193. I love you.

1194. And then Jesus tells him

1195. exactly what's going to happen to him.

1196. That He is going to be crucified

  1197. like our Lord was.

  1198. He Himself will die

  1199. such a terrible death.

1200. The thing that He was so afraid of

  1201. on this night

  1202. where He betrays Christ,

1203. where He denies Him these three times,

  1204. Jesus tells him,

1205. this is the way that you will also die.

1206. And in spite of that,

1207. Peter would soon speak boldly

  1208. to the very men

  1209. who had judged Jesus.

1210. Like a lion he speaks to them.

  1211. Turn one more time.

  1212. Acts chapter 4.

    Acts 4 chapter mention

1213. It's the last place I'll have you.

1214. And we're wrapping up here.

  1215. I haven't banged on a lectern once.

1216. I promise you I would do that.

  1217. Wake up.

  1218. Acts chapter 4.

    Acts 4 chapter mention

  1219. Acts chapter 4.

    Acts 4 chapter mention

  1220. Verse 5.

1221. It's after the day of Pentecost.

  1222. On the next day,

1223. their rulers and elders and scribes

  1224. gathered together in Jerusalem

1225. with Annas the high priest

1226. and Caiaphas and John and Alexander,

1227. all who were of the high priestly family.

1228. So all of those five and six,

1229. all of those people are Sanhedrin.

1230. It's the same people that judge

1231. perverted justice in their judgment of Jesus.

  1232. Verse 7.

1233. And when they had set them in the midst,

  1234. they inquired,

1235. By what power or by what name

  1236. do you do this?

  1237. Then Peter,

1238. filled with the Holy Spirit,

1239. the source of his great boldness,

  1240. said to them,

1241. Rulers of the people and elders,

1242. if we are being examined today

  1243. concerning a good deed

1244. done to a crippled man,

1245. by what means this man has been healed,

1246. let it be known to all of you

1247. and to all the people of Israel

1248. that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth,

  1249. whom you crucified,

1250. whom God raised from the dead,

1251. by him this man is standing before you well.

1252. You notice that he calls him Jesus of Nazareth?

1253. The very accusation made to him.

1254. Weren't you with Jesus the Nazarene?

  1255. Here he says,

  1256. you're darn right I was.

  1257. Jesus Christ of Nazareth.

  1258. Verse 11,

1259. This Jesus is the stone that was rejected by you,

  1260. the builders,

1261. which has become the cornerstone,

1262. and there is salvation in no one else,

1263. for there is no other name under heaven

  1264. given among men,

1265. by which we must be saved.

1266. The boldness as he's filled with the Spirit,

1267. the way in which his life has been redeemed,

  1268. such a low point,

1269. now brought just a couple of months later

1270. to such a high point in his service to our King.

1271. And I think many of us find ourselves

1272. in the place of Peter,

1273. having seen that in some way,

  1274. in some regard,

1275. our life does not reflect our love

1276. and devotion to our Lord.

1277. We serve things that are so shabby,

  1278. so worthless,

  1279. so fading away,

  1280. when we have Christ.

1281. In so many varied ways,

  1282. we deny Him.

  1283. Let me encourage you,

1284. if you are found in Him,

1285. Paul writes in Philippians 1.6,

1286. And I am sure of this,

1287. that He who began a good work in you

1288. will bring it to completion

1289. at the day of Jesus Christ.

  1290. Praise God.

  1291. Romans 8,

1292. There is therefore now no condemnation

1293. for those who are in Christ Jesus.

1294. And so the call to us is to repent

  1295. and believe.

  1296. That is,

1297. to take up the precious truths of the Gospel

1298. as we find ourselves failing Jesus

1299. in all of the ways that we do.

  1300. And to praise Him,

1301. that it is His righteousness

1302. that's been given to us.

  1303. Counted to our credit.

  1304. When God sees us,

  1305. He sees Christ.

  1306. And beloved,

1307. this should be motivating to us.

  1308. This should move us

1309. to share Him with the world.

  1310. This should move us

  1311. to rearrange our lives,

1312. to give up our self-determination

  1313. to experience,

  1314. proclaim,

  1315. and display Him

  1316. in all things

  1317. to all peoples.

  1318. Let's pray together.
