  2. Turn to the Gospel according to Mark chapter 16.

    Mark 16 chapter mention

  3. !

  4. We have been for quite some time in our verse-by-verse exposition of Mark's Gospel account in the Passion Week,

  5. this final week of Jesus' life.

  6. In fact, since the beginning of chapter 11, Mark is accounting this,

  7. which Clay started out for us on September 7th of last year.

  8. We've been working our way through it.

  9. We've seen the triumphal entry of Christ into Jerusalem on Monday.

  10. Yes, you heard me correctly.

  11. Palm Monday.

  12. The cleansing of the temple on Tuesday.

  13. The teaching and confrontations with Jesus on Wednesday.

  14. The prophecy and Last Supper on Thursday.

  15. And then the betrayal, arrest, the six various trials,

  16. the suffering, the crucifixion, and burial on Friday.

  17. And we haven't talked about it at all because it wasn't in our text,

  18. but there is also the silence of Saturday.

  19. There is a rather famous motto of the Protestant Reformation,

  20. which is in Latin, of course,

  21. which is post tenebrous lux,

  22. which means after darkness, light.

  23. And they meant it in various ways.

  24. They were coming out of what would have been called the Dark Ages,

  25. separating from, reforming Catholicism.

  26. But they also meant it for what Christ has done in the world.

  27. The darkness of sin being pierced by His sacrifice on the cross.

  28. And certainly today, we have much to celebrate in that.

  29. After the darkness of Christ's suffering, crucifixion, and burial,

  30. we have the light of the resurrection.

  31. And today we get to look at that.

  32. What a glorious thing to do in chapter 16, verses 1-8.

  33. This is likely the end of Mark's narrative.

  34. Some of your translations may not include a verse 9-20,

  35. although most do, but we'll put it in brackets

  36. and give some explanation to the fact that

  37. very few of the early manuscripts contain verses 9-20.

  38. Most scholars agree that verses 9-20 were not in the original text.

  39. And there's much contention about whether or not

  40. our ending, verse 8, is in fact Mark's intended ending or not.

  41. We have to use verses 9-20 with a great deal of caution.

  42. Certainly, denominational practice should not be formed on those verses.

  43. And I will say to you today, I'm thankful that this is my closing of Mark's gospel account.

  44. But we are going to look at verses 9-20,

  45. and Clay is going to pick up that gauntlet and tackle that for us next week.

  46. Likely mostly to talk about bibliography and how it is we arrive at

  47. what is the scripture and what isn't the scripture.

  48. So, for our kind of study proper,

  49. this will be the closing of Mark's gospel account.

  50. For fun, I looked back.

  51. We began our sermon series through Mark's gospel account

  52. on September 22nd of 2013.

  53. That's 81 Sundays ago.

  54. I can't say with certainty that we've done anywhere near that many sermons.

  55. I know we've taken a couple of breaks, at least four for sure, this past February.

  56. But we've been at this for quite some time.

  57. And what a wonderful, glorious way to end it now with the resurrection.

  58. I'm so very thankful for this text of Scripture, Mark's gospel account.

  59. And so very thankful for the opportunity to preach it to you over this past year and a half.

  60. Because in so many ways, my heart has been rent in two as we've studied Mark together.

  61. It has been pierced and divided.

  62. It has been impressed upon me the high cost of discipleship

  63. and the subsequent glories thereof.

  64. The beautiful nature of following Christ,

  65. that it's going to mean suffering in this world, but glory beyond.

  66. Mark's purpose for writing of this narrative has been so carefully applied to my being

  67. by the transforming work of the Spirit of God.

  68. And I hope that this has been true for you as well.

  69. If you're a guest with us, I know you haven't heard all of this.

  70. But for those of you who have been here regularly,

  71. I really hope that Mark's gospel account has worked in you in the way that it's worked in me.

  72. And if you are a guest with us this morning, I hope this closing will do the same.

  73. So let's read together.

  74. Mark 16, verses 1-8.

    Mark 16:1–8

  75. When the Sabbath was passed,

  76. Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James and Siloam brought spices,

  77. so they might go and anoint Him.

  78. And very early on the first day of the week,

  79. when the sun had risen, they went to the tomb.

  80. And they were saying to one another,

  81. Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance of the tomb?

  82. And looking up, they saw that the stone had been rolled back.

  83. It was very large.

  84. And entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting on the right side,

  85. dressed in a white robe, and they were alarmed.

  86. And he said to them,

  87. Do not be alarmed.

  88. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified.

  89. He has risen.

  90. He is not here.

  91. See the place where they laid Him?

  92. But go tell His disciples and Peter that He is going before you to Galilee.

  93. There you will see Him, just as He told you.

  94. And they went out and fled from the tomb,

  95. for trembling and astonishment had seized them.

  96. And they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.

  97. This is God's Word to us.

  98. It was written for His glory and our good.

  99. We would all do well to listen to it in order to believe its promises

  100. and obey its commands.

  101. Now, this morning, I do not wish to play the apologist

  102. compounding for you the facts concerning the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

  103. Although there are many,

  104. and I would encourage you, if you are a skeptic to any degree,

  105. to take a good look at them.

  106. This morning, by faith,

  107. I and I hope you accept the reality of such an event,

  108. this resurrection of Jesus Christ, our Lord.

  109. So much hangs on the historic veracity as we will soon see.

  110. But for the skeptic this morning,

  111. let me read just a short quote from Charles Spurgeon,

  112. the Prince of Preachers, who said,

  113. the resurrection is a fact better attested

  114. than any event recorded in any history,

  115. whether ancient or modern.

  116. And I hope for the skeptic in you that may allow your mind to rest enough,

  117. give some assumption to the reality of this event

  118. to see what it is that has been made possible by it.

  119. Let's notice together a few things before we get into the doctrine of the resurrection.

  120. Let's notice a few things about Mark's telling of the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

  121. If you look at the synoptics as well as John,

  122. there's a lot of variance in the tellings.

  123. And so, let's look at Mark's account,

  124. and I'll pull together some of the others for you as well.

  125. And we notice first,

  126. the women that go when the Sabbath was passed.

  127. To begin with,

  128. we need to be clearly thinking about the amount of days that have passed

  129. since Jesus was crucified.

  130. And for some, this becomes problematic

  131. because He was crucified on Friday,

  132. and He was resurrected on Sunday,

  133. which from our estimation is only two days.

  134. But He has predicted over and over again

  135. that after three days, He would rise.

  136. So just as a note to you,

  137. you must know that the Jews would have counted as a part of a day,

  138. a full day.

  139. So Friday would have been day number one

  140. when He was laid in the tomb.

  141. Saturday day number two.

  142. The end of Saturday would have been sundown on Saturday.

  143. Sunday begins,

  144. and it's on this day that He's resurrected.

  145. And so three days,

  146. and He is risen.

  147. So it's when the Sabbath has passed.

  148. Saturday, the day of rest.

  149. It would seem that the women were unable to properly adorn His body,

  150. able to take the spices that would have been given.

  151. Not that He would have been embalmed the way

  152. the pharaohs of old would have been embalmed in Egypt,

  153. but it was a process they went through,

  154. a way of preserving the body a little bit longer,

  155. mostly to show honor to the one who was being buried.

  156. There was a great deal of rush

  157. about the crucifixion of Jesus Christ,

  158. making sure that He was dead and put in the tomb

  159. before sundown on Friday when the Sabbath began

  160. and the Jews could do no work at that time.

  161. And so it would seem that He wasn't properly embalmed at that time.

  162. And so when the Sabbath is over,

  163. they have gone,

  164. they have bought these spices,

  165. and now they're coming to anoint Him.

  166. Very early, verse 2 says,

  167. on the first day of the week.

  168. And Mark, as he's so glossary sometimes,

  169. includes very few details,

  170. in this case wants us to be sure to know

  171. that it's when the sun had risen.

  172. It's early, early morning on Sunday.

  173. And they go to the tomb,

  174. and they're not very prepared,

  175. I'll have you note,

  176. when they go to the tomb,

  177. because on their way to the tomb,

  178. they're wondering how in the world

  179. they're going to even access the body of Christ.

  180. This very large stone, Mark tells us,

  181. has been rolled in front of the tomb.

  182. And they say,

  183. who will roll away the stone for us?

  184. But when they get there, verse 4,

  185. they see that the stone has already been rolled back.

  186. Mark doesn't give us much else.

  187. It leaves a lot to be assumed on our part.

  188. But Matthew records in 28, verse 2 of his Gospel account,

  189. And behold, there was a great earthquake,

  190. for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven

  191. and came and rolled back the stone.

  192. And sat on it.

  193. So God Himself sent a messenger

  194. to roll away the stone

  195. to prepare for them to come and see

  196. that their Savior was, in fact, risen.

  197. It's very significant that it's women that go,

  198. and they're the first ones to see this,

  199. and that all of the accounts record

  200. that this is the case.

  201. For two reasons.

  202. First, they were witnesses to His life.

  203. You can see that in chapter 15, verse 41 of Mark.

  204. To His death.

  205. Chapter 15, verse 40.

  206. To His burial.

  207. Chapter 15, verse 47.

  208. And now, His resurrection.

  209. These women have been given privy

  210. to see all of these events together.

  211. It's as if it taps it all off.

  212. That their testimony might be able to carry across

  213. all of the major events of Jesus' life, death, and resurrection.

  214. His life, death, burial, and now His resurrection.

  215. Secondly, they're women.

  216. Significant.

  217. The significance of the women is that they are women.

  218. And to us, this isn't very telling,

  219. but certainly, in this day, it would have been.

  220. Let me read you a little bit from Sinclair Ferguson's commentary on Mark.

  221. He writes,

  222. Mark tells us that it was the women

  223. who first discovered the empty tomb

  224. and who heard the first announcement of the resurrection.

  225. To our 20th century Western minds,

  226. that may seem unremarkable.

  227. But in the context of first century Palestine,

  228. it was highly significant.

  229. For women were often treated as second-class citizens.

  230. Their testimony would be inadmissible in a court of law.

  231. As witnesses, they had no standing.

  232. No one who wanted to fabricate a convincing account

  233. of the resurrection in first century Palestine

  234. would have dreamed of doing it in this way.

  235. These were not the witnesses for this day.

  236. They did not carry with them the credibility

  237. to speak to this.

  238. So if someone were simply making this up,

  239. they would not have included this detail about the women.

  240. Later, we see in John's account

  241. that John and Peter go and see the empty tomb.

  242. This is where they would have begun

  243. if they weren't committed

  244. to sharing the whole story with their readers.

  245. There's a great deal of beauty in the Gospel

  246. and this extension of God to women of this day

  247. that they might be the first witnesses

  248. of such an event.

  249. To just kind of cap that off for you,

  250. Josephus, who's a Jewish historian,

  251. in his book entitled Antiquities of the Jews said,

  252. But let not the testimony of women be admitted

  253. on account of the levity and boldness of their sex.

  254. And ladies, I don't know if that's offensive to you or not,

  255. but there certainly is a degree of both things

  256. which we love about you.

  257. And we see that they enter the tomb in verse 5.

  258. I'm trying to backpedal off that, but I can't.

  259. So we will move on.

  260. In verse 5, we see that they enter the tomb.

  261. They see a young man sitting on the right side.

  262. Very little detail again from Mark.

  263. A young man seated on the right,

  264. dressed in a white robe,

  265. and they are alarmed.

  266. Who is this man?

  267. Why should they be alarmed?

  268. Again, Matthew's account gives us a bit more detail

  269. in chapter 28, verses 3 and 4.

  270. Matthew writes,

  271. His appearance was like lightning

  272. and his clothing white as snow.

  273. And for fear of him,

  274. the guards trembled and became like dead men.

  275. They passed out is what that means.

  276. This is a phrasing that would have been used in this day.

  277. So presumably, the women,

  278. when they show up to the tomb,

  279. they're not alone.

  280. There's this man sitting there

  281. who's like lightning,

  282. but also the guards are passed out on the ground

  283. because he was such a fearful sight.

  284. And he says to them,

  285. as so many angelic appearances start in this way,

  286. do not be alarmed.

  287. Do not be alarmed.

  288. You seek Jesus of Nazareth

  289. who was crucified.

  290. And then this most wonderful,

  291. most emphatic statement,

  292. He has risen.

  293. He is not here.

  294. Listen to the same telling from Luke 24,

    Luke 24:6

  295. verses 6 and 7.

  296. Luke records,

  297. He is not here,

  298. but has risen.

  299. Remember how He told you

  300. while He was still in Galilee

  301. that the Son of Man

  302. must be delivered in the hands of sinful men

  303. and be crucified

  304. and on the third day rise.

  305. So in Luke's account,

  306. this angel gives to them

  307. a remembrance of the things that Jesus said.

  308. And they're saying to them,

  309. the things that Jesus has said

  310. would come to pass,

  311. have.

  312. Do not be alarmed.

  313. He told you this would happen.

  314. And He does it a number of times

  315. in Mark's account.

  316. Mark 8, 31,

  317. 9, 31,

  318. and 10,

  319. 33-34.

  320. If you've been here,

  321. we've gone through those

  322. and repeated them a number of times.

  323. Let me read to you

  324. just Mark 9, 31,

  325. where Jesus says,

  326. the Son of Man

  327. is going to be delivered

  328. into the hands of men

  329. and they will kill Him.

  330. And when He is killed,

  331. after three days,

  332. He will rise.

  333. So,

  334. the previous prophecy

  335. has already come to pass.

  336. Jesus has been delivered

  337. into the hands of men

  338. and they have killed Him.

  339. And now,

  340. it's fulfilled

  341. that after three days,

  342. He has risen.

  343. And the angel gives a command to them,

  344. but go.

  345. Do not be alarmed.

  346. This thing has happened

  347. that's supposed to come to happen.

  348. Verse 7,

  349. but go.

  350. Tell His disciples and Peter

  351. that He is going before you

  352. to Galilee.

  353. There you see Him

  354. just as He told you.

  355. But just as He told you

  356. is found in Mark 14, 28.

  357. It's a little detail

  358. that's easy to miss,

  359. but Jesus says,

  360. but after I am raised up,

  361. I will go before you

  362. to Galilee.

  363. We'll go back

  364. to the place of preparation,

  365. the place in which

  366. He gathered up the disciples,

  367. the place where most

  368. of His ministry took place.

  369. Kind of the home turf

  370. is where they would gather together

  371. once again

  372. before Jesus finally ascends

  373. and sends them on their mission

  374. to establish the church

  375. and to change the world.

  376. But they leave.

  377. Mark's record is very brief

  378. at this point.

  379. They leave the tomb.

  380. They flee from it.

  381. And for trembling and astonishment,

  382. they say nothing to anyone,

  383. for they were afraid.

  384. We have noted on a number of occasions

  385. Mark's particular way

  386. in which he records the failures

  387. of those who were close to Jesus,

  388. pressing at us all through

  389. his Gospel account

  390. to be disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ,

  391. but showing all along

  392. how very difficult

  393. and challenging

  394. this is.

  395. We know of Mark's life

  396. that he deserted

  397. Paul and Barnabas.

  398. Paul wanted nothing

  399. to do with him after that.

  400. In fact,

  401. that was the conflict

  402. that called Paul and Barnabas

  403. to part ways.

  404. And Barnabas wanted

  405. to take his cousin,

  406. John Mark,

  407. along with him

  408. on this next stage

  409. of their journey.

  410. And Paul wanted nothing

  411. to do with the deserter.

  412. But we get to see later on

  413. in multiple texts

  414. that now this Mark

  415. is now serving alongside

  416. and likely imprisoned

  417. with Paul

  418. in a number of places.

  419. He himself

  420. has been this

  421. restored deserter.

  422. We see it to be true

  423. of Peter

  424. and the way in which

  425. he tells Peter's story.

  426. And we know that

  427. Peter is restored.

  428. And he seems to do it again here.

  429. He seems to hang the ladies out

  430. that they didn't do

  431. what they were asked to do

  432. by the angel of the Lord,

  433. at least not

  434. in his telling.

  435. In other tellings,

  436. we see that they do go

  437. and they do share

  438. with the disciples.

  439. But at this moment in time,

  440. they say nothing

  441. because they are so

  442. very afraid.

  443. And it would seem

  444. that this is the way

  445. that Mark concludes

  446. his Gospel account

  447. of the life, death,

  448. and resurrection

  449. of Jesus Christ.

  450. So we should take some time.

  451. We would do well

  452. to reflect upon

  453. the doctrine

  454. of the resurrection

  455. or the things

  456. that are possible

  457. because of

  458. the resurrection

  459. of Jesus Christ.

  460. So,

  461. you had your exegesis

  462. now for your doctrine.

  463. Firstly,

  464. Jesus' resurrection

  465. is the guarantee

  466. of our regeneration.

  467. Now, regeneration

  468. is an act of God

  469. in which we are given

  470. new spiritual life.

  471. to borrow the language

  472. of John 3,

  473. to be born again.

  474. In John 3,

  475. Jesus says

  476. that we must

  477. be born again

  478. to see

  479. the kingdom of God.

  480. That our

  481. image-bearing

  482. capacity

  483. has been spoiled

  484. by sin.

  485. By very nature,

  486. we are not acceptable

  487. to God.

  488. And so we must be

  489. born again.

  490. We must be

  491. made new

  492. to be found acceptable

  493. and to be part

  494. of His kingdom.

  495. We're once not

  496. a people,

  497. but we need to be

  498. made a people.

  499. We're not citizens.

  500. We need to be

  501. citizens

  502. of the kingdom of God.

  503. And this requires

  504. regeneration.

  505. Ezekiel 36,

  506. 26 and 27,

  507. the Lord says this,

  508. and I will give you

  509. a new heart

  510. and a new spirit

  511. I will put within you

  512. and I will remove

  513. the heart of stone

  514. from your flesh

  515. and give you

  516. a heart of flesh.

  517. And I will put

  518. My Spirit within you

  519. and cause you

  520. to walk in My statutes

  521. and be careful

  522. to obey My rules.

  523. This is regeneration.

  524. And what He's doing

  525. in such beautiful language

  526. is saying that our hearts

  527. apart from Christ,

  528. apart from His intervening work

  529. in our lives,

  530. are hearts of stone,

  531. cold,

  532. hard,

  533. against the things

  534. of God.

  535. But He will take that

  536. out of us

  537. and He will put in us

  538. a heart of flesh,

  539. a heart that beats

  540. for Him.

  541. He will make us new.

  542. He will give us

  543. His Spirit

  544. and cause us,

  545. move us

  546. to keep His statutes

  547. and to obey

  548. all of His rules.

  549. And the text there

  550. gives us a clue.

  551. How is it that God

  552. works this change in us?

  553. What is the means

  554. by which He accomplishes

  555. this work?

  556. John 3.8 says

  557. that regeneration

  558. is a work

  559. of the Holy Spirit.

  560. It's one of the great works

  561. that God accomplishes

  562. by that part of the Trinity

  563. known as

  564. the Holy Spirit.

  565. John 3.8 says

  566. the wind blows

  567. where it wishes

  568. and you hear it sound,

  569. but you do not know

  570. where it comes from

  571. or where it goes.

  572. So it is with everyone

  573. who is born

  574. of the Spirit.

  575. So Jesus' resurrection

  576. is incredibly important to us

  577. because He made a promise

  578. to the apostles

  579. to send the Spirit

  580. to them.

  581. He needed to be alive.

  582. He had said all these things

  583. to them.

  584. What a sad, sad day

  585. for them

  586. from their perspective,

  587. from their side of the cross.

  588. His death was

  589. because all of the things

  590. He had said

  591. would come to pass

  592. had yet to.

  593. How is it possible

  594. that He would do the things

  595. He said He was going to do

  596. if He's dead

  597. and buried

  598. and in a tomb?

  599. John 16.7 says,

  600. Nevertheless,

  601. I tell you the truth.

  602. It is to your advantage

  603. that I go away.

  604. For if I do not go away,

  605. the Helper,

  606. He's referring to the Holy Spirit

  607. there,

  608. will not come to you.

  609. But if I go,

  610. I will send Him to you.

  611. Jesus is telling His disciples

  612. before His death

  613. that His death, burial,

  614. resurrection,

  615. and ascension

  616. is necessary

  617. that the Spirit of God

  618. would come.

  619. I have at many points

  620. in my life

  621. wished that Jesus

  622. would be here now

  623. with us.

  624. Of course,

  625. I long for His second coming

  626. when He'll finish His work.

  627. But in the meantime,

  628. wishing that He

  629. would be here with us.

  630. But He says

  631. it's to our advantage

  632. that He goes away.

  633. We have a better thing.

  634. It's better to be a Christian now,

  635. to have new hearts

  636. and the Spirit of God

  637. working within us,

  638. than to have walked with Him

  639. in those days.

  640. That's hard for me

  641. to get my mind around.

  642. It's something to certainly

  643. meditate upon.

  644. It's a better thing

  645. to have the resurrected

  646. and ascended Jesus Christ

  647. and been granted

  648. the promised Holy Spirit.

  649. 1 Peter 1.3

  650. helps tie this thought together.

  651. Peter writes,

  652. Blessed be the God and Father

  653. of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  654. According to His great mercy,

  655. He has caused us

  656. to be born again

  657. to a living hope

  658. through the resurrection

  659. of Jesus Christ

  660. from the dead.

  661. Now, Peter sees

  662. that this was a necessary thing.

  663. The resurrection of Jesus Christ

  664. must have taken place

  665. in order to guarantee

  666. our regeneration.

  667. So that was firstly.

  668. Jesus' resurrection

  669. is the guarantee

  670. of our regeneration.

  671. Secondly,

  672. Jesus' resurrection

  673. is the guarantee

  674. of our justification.

  675. Now, justification

  676. justification is

  677. the right legal standing

  678. before God.

  679. Justification is

  680. the opposite

  681. of condemnation.

  682. To state it in the negative,

  683. to be justified

  684. before God

  685. is to not be guilty

  686. of the sins

  687. that are ours,

  688. that ultimately belong to us,

  689. that we own,

  690. is to have those dismissed,

  691. stricken from the record.

  692. That's to state it in

  693. the negative.

  694. And I don't mean

  695. in a bad way.

  696. Right?

  697. Stated in the positive,

  698. to be justified

  699. is to be declared

  700. righteous.

  701. righteous.

  702. In the perfect life

  703. and death,

  704. suffering,

  705. death,

  706. and resurrection

  707. of Jesus Christ,

  708. we have given to us

  709. both

  710. the effect of Jesus'

  711. passive

  712. and His active obedience.

  713. His passive obedience

  714. being the suffering

  715. of His life

  716. and His death.

  717. His active obedience

  718. being all of the righteousness

  719. that He exhibited

  720. before

  721. in His living.

  722. Right?

  723. That we're not just found

  724. neutral before God,

  725. having our sins dismissed,

  726. but that we're found

  727. righteous before God

  728. because we have

  729. Christ's righteousness.

  730. Christ's propitiation says,

  731. thank you,

  732. He appeased God's wrath

  733. with His death.

  734. Right?

  735. Christ's propitiation says

  736. He appeased God's wrath

  737. when His death,

  738. the wrath that was due us,

  739. we have failed

  740. in every way

  741. to keep God's moral law.

  742. If you're not found

  743. in Christ today,

  744. please know that

  745. this is true of you.

  746. It's true of all of us.

  747. The great meta-narrative

  748. of humanity

  749. is that we all have sinned

  750. and we all fall short

  751. of the glory of God.

  752. There is none righteous.

  753. No, not one.

  754. We have all failed

  755. to meet His standard.

  756. It's impossible to do so

  757. because of our sin nature.

  758. So there is infinite wrath

  759. due to us.

  760. But because of Christ's sacrifice,

  761. because Christ took the wrath

  762. of God on our behalf,

  763. we have been given

  764. a dismissal note for that.

  765. 1 John 2.2 says,

  766. He is the propitiation

  767. for our sins

  768. and not for ours only,

  769. but also for the sins

  770. of the whole world.

  771. So Christ's propitiation,

  772. He appeased God's wrath

  773. with His death.

  774. Christ's imputation,

  775. we are granted

  776. His righteousness.

  777. Romans 10.4,

  778. For Christ is the end

  779. of the law for righteousness

  780. to everyone who believes.

  781. It doesn't mean

  782. that there's not a standard

  783. we are still to live to.

  784. This is not cheap grace.

  785. Grace is costly

  786. in that it requires your life.

  787. That we are meant

  788. to pursue God

  789. with all that we have.

  790. We are still meant

  791. to fulfill the moral law of God,

  792. but when we fail

  793. and we will,

  794. we still have His righteousness.

  795. We get to wear it.

  796. I get to put it on

  797. as a cloak.

  798. And as I endeavor

  799. by God's grace

  800. to live to His righteous standard,

  801. my failures are covered

  802. by His goodness to me

  803. in Christ.

  804. Romans 4.22-25,

  805. after a rather lengthy discourse

  806. about Abraham's faith

  807. in God's promise,

  808. says this,

  809. That is why his faith

  810. was counted to him

  811. as righteousness.

  812. We're talking about Abraham.

  813. But the words

  814. that was counted to him

  815. were not written

  816. for his sake alone,

  817. but for ours also.

  818. It will be counted to us

  819. who believe in Him

  820. who raised from the dead

  821. Jesus our Lord,

  822. who was delivered up

  823. for our trespasses

  824. and raised

  825. for our justification.

  826. You see Paul

  827. wrapping those ideas together.

  828. Us being given

  829. our justification.

  830. Our sins dismissed.

  831. Us taking on

  832. the righteousness of Christ

  833. because of the One

  834. who raised Jesus

  835. from the dead.

  836. So Jesus' resurrection

  837. is the guarantee

  838. of our regeneration.

  839. Jesus' resurrection

  840. is the guarantee

  841. of our justification.

  842. And thirdly,

  843. Jesus' resurrection

  844. is the guarantee

  845. of our resurrection bodies.

  846. This is a bit briefer point,

  847. but an equally glorious one.

  848. Jesus was the first recipient

  849. of a new body.

  850. This transformed state.

  851. You know,

  852. there are other men

  853. who had been resurrected.

  854. Take Nicodemus

  855. as the example for that.

  856. But 1 Corinthians 15.20

  857. says,

  858. but in fact,

  859. Christ has been raised

  860. from the dead.

  861. The first fruits

  862. of those

  863. who have fallen asleep.

  864. So He's the beginning

  865. of something.

  866. The first fruits.

  867. He's the beginning

  868. of this new type

  869. of transformed body.

  870. And we will be recipients

  871. of the same type of body

  872. which will have

  873. no more disease,

  874. sickness,

  875. suffering,

  876. death.

  877. There's much conjecture

  878. about exactly what this

  879. will look like.

  880. I have absolutely no idea.

  881. I'm going to guess

  882. maybe my 18-year-old self.

  883. I'm going to go back

  884. to that

  885. because life hurt

  886. a lot less

  887. in those days.

  888. Take my 18-year-old self

  889. and take out type 1 diabetes

  890. and that I think

  891. might be my resurrected state.

  892. We don't really know,

  893. but we know that we will have

  894. transformed bodies,

  895. that they will be without

  896. all the suffering

  897. and the disease

  898. and the sickness of the world

  899. and that they will not die.

  900. So to say that Jesus' resurrection

  901. is the guarantee

  902. of our resurrection bodies

  903. is to say that we will live

  904. with Him forever.

  905. Praise God.

  906. 1 Corinthians 15.42

  907. Paul says,

  908. So it is with the resurrection

  909. of the dead.

  910. What is sown

  911. is perishable.

  912. He's using this analogy

  913. of the way that seeds

  914. bring forth something else.

  915. The way a seed goes

  916. into the ground

  917. and it dies,

  918. but then it brings forth

  919. a different type

  920. of vegetable or fruit.

  921. What is sown

  922. is perishable.

  923. What is raised

  924. is imperishable.

  925. So Jesus' resurrection

  926. is the guarantee

  927. of our regeneration,

  928. our justification,

  929. and our resurrection bodies.

  930. We have been changed by God,

  931. made righteous in His sight,

  932. and will live with Him forever

  933. because Jesus lived

  934. the perfect life.

  935. He died to bear our sin,

  936. and He was raised

  937. to glory.

  938. So what?

  939. What do we do

  940. with these types of doctrines?

  941. I hope firstly,

  942. not as a point of application,

  943. but I hope firstly

  944. that those kinds of truths

  945. just warm your heart.

  946. That you're just given

  947. cause to celebrate

  948. who God is to us

  949. in the personal work

  950. of Jesus Christ.

  951. That you want to exalt His name

  952. because of what He's done

  953. on your behalf.

  954. It really should be enough.

  955. But all the same,

  956. Jesus' resurrection,

  957. as I mentioned before,

  958. supplies to us

  959. the Holy Spirit.

  960. Let me read to you again

  961. John 16, 7.

  962. Nevertheless,

  963. I tell you the truth,

  964. it is to your advantage

  965. that I go away.

  966. For if I do not go away,

  967. the Helper will not come to you.

  968. But if I go,

  969. I will send Him to you.

  970. All of us

  971. who have placed our faith

  972. in Jesus Christ

  973. are given the gift

  974. of the Holy Spirit.

  975. We have Him.

  976. He abides within us.

  977. And I know that's trippy

  978. to think about.

  979. But He does.

  980. All the same.

  981. We are given Him

  982. as a seal

  983. and as a helper.

  984. So firstly,

  985. Jesus' resurrection

  986. supplies by the Holy Spirit

  987. the surety

  988. of your salvation.

  989. the sure knowledge

  990. of your justification

  991. before God

  992. and your eternal state

  993. of your future

  994. resurrection body.

  995. I think it would be good

  996. if you turned with me

  997. to 1 Corinthians 15.

  998. The classic resurrection chapter.

  999. Some people might try

1000. to not preach a sermon

  1001. on Easter Sunday

  1002. using 1 Corinthians 15.

1003. It's rather difficult to do.

1004. It would seem that a number

  1005. of the Corinthian believers

  1006. or otherwise

  1007. those that were part

  1008. of the church

1009. believe that it is not possible

  1010. that a person

  1011. could be raised

  1012. from the dead.

1013. And Paul is addressing that

  1014. here in chapter 15

1015. in such a wonderful way.

  1016. Let's begin

  1017. at verse 1 and 2.

  1018. Now I'd remind you,

  1019. brothers,

  1020. of the gospel

  1021. I preach to you

  1022. which you received

  1023. in which you stand

1024. and by which you are being saved

  1025. if you hold fast

  1026. to the word

  1027. I preach to you

  1028. unless you believed

  1029. in vain.

  1030. So let's just note

  1031. he's saying,

  1032. now it reminds you

1033. of the gospel I preach

1034. by which you are being saved.

1035. And then he goes on

  1036. to elaborate

1037. in the rest of the chapter

  1038. about this gospel

  1039. he preached.

1040. What is it that he had come

  1041. and preached to them?

  1042. Earlier on

1043. in the book of 1 Corinthians

  1044. he said,

  1045. I came and I knew

  1046. nothing among you

  1047. except Jesus Christ

  1048. and Him crucified.

  1049. Which includes

  1050. the resurrection.

  1051. He elaborates on that

1052. later on in that chapter.

  1053. So 1 Corinthians 15.12-19.

1054. Now if Christ is proclaimed

1055. as raised from the dead,

1056. how can some of you say

1057. that there is no resurrection

  1058. of the dead?

1059. But if there is no resurrection

  1060. of the dead,

  1061. then not even Christ

  1062. has been raised.

1063. And if Christ has not been raised,

1064. then our preaching is in vain

1065. and your faith is in vain.

  1066. We are even found

  1067. to be misrepresenting God

  1068. because we testified

  1069. about God

  1070. that He raised Christ

1071. whom He did not raise

  1072. if it is true

1073. that the dead are not raised.

1074. Are you tracking his logic

  1075. through that?

1076. For if the dead are not raised,

  1077. not even Christ

  1078. has been raised.

1079. And if Christ has not been raised,

  1080. your faith is futile

  1081. and you are still

  1082. in your sins.

  1083. Then those also

  1084. who have fallen asleep

  1085. in Christ have perished.

1086. If in Christ we have hope

  1087. in this life only,

1088. we are of all people

  1089. most to be pitied.

  1090. So the resurrection

  1091. of Jesus Christ

  1092. by the Spirit

  1093. gives us this surety

  1094. of our salvation.

  1095. If it didn't happen,

  1096. we are fools.

  1097. We are absolute fools.

  1098. What are you doing

  1099. with this mourning

  1100. if Jesus Christ

  1101. has not been raised

  1102. from the dead?

  1103. Go do something else

1104. because this is a waste

  1105. of your time.

1106. That's stated in the negative.

  1107. We are fools

1108. if Christ has not been raised.

  1109. Don't leave.

  1110. I'm thankful

  1111. that He has been.

  1112. Stated in the positive,

  1113. we have not believed

  1114. in vain

  1115. because He,

  1116. in fact,

  1117. has been raised.

  1118. We are not fools.

  1119. We are wise

  1120. for having believed

  1121. this thing.

  1122. 2 Corinthians 1.22 says,

  1123. God has also put

  1124. His seal on us

  1125. and given us

  1126. His Spirit

  1127. in our hearts

  1128. as a guarantee

  1129. of these sure realities

1130. that we may be found in Him.

  1131. So Jesus' resurrection

1132. supplies by the Holy Spirit

1133. the surety of our salvation

  1134. and secondly,

  1135. the power

  1136. for your sanctification.

  1137. The power

  1138. for your sanctification.

1139. Let me draw your mind

  1140. back to the doctrine

  1141. that the resurrection

  1142. guarantees

  1143. your regeneration.

  1144. The power for that

  1145. comes from the resurrection.

  1146. Your regeneration.

1147. That you have been changed.

1148. That you have been made

  1149. a new creation.

  1150. The term sanctification

1151. has two elements to it.

  1152. One is that

  1153. once we are found

  1154. in Christ,

1155. we have been set apart.

  1156. We have been

  1157. sanctified.

  1158. We have been

  1159. separated in status.

1160. We are a new type

  1161. of individual.

1162. But it also carries with it

  1163. this element

  1164. that we are still

  1165. in the process

  1166. of being made

  1167. into those people

1168. for the glory of God.

  1169. That all throughout

  1170. our lives

  1171. we will be made

1172. in greater and greater degree

  1173. more like Christ.

1174. So this is the type

  1175. I'm talking about.

  1176. That power

  1177. for our sanctification.

1178. We have been made new.

  1179. Therefore,

  1180. we have the ability

  1181. to proceed

  1182. to strive

  1183. after righteousness.

  1184. After all,

1185. Paul says in Philippians 1.6

1186. and I'm sure of this,

  1187. that he who began

1188. a good work in you

1189. will bring it to completion

  1190. at the day

  1191. of Jesus Christ.

  1192. God has saved us

  1193. and God will

  1194. perfect us.

  1195. Romans 8.11

  1196. Paul writes,

1197. that the Spirit of Him

  1198. who raised Jesus

  1199. from the dead

  1200. dwells in you.

1201. He who raised Christ Jesus

  1202. from the dead

  1203. will also give life

  1204. to your mortal bodies

  1205. through His Spirit

  1206. who dwells in you.

  1207. We have been given

  1208. the Spirit of God

  1209. that we might live

  1210. to God.

1211. And there are far too many

  1212. people today

  1213. who profess

  1214. the name of Christ

  1215. and there's zero

  1216. evidence of it

  1217. in their life.

  1218. None whatsoever.

  1219. What does Jesus say

  1220. about vines

  1221. that don't bear fruit?

  1222. They'll be trimmed away

  1223. and thrown

  1224. into the fire.

  1225. A good tree

  1226. bears good fruit.

  1227. It is necessary

  1228. that having been saved,

  1229. the evidence of this

  1230. is that we live

  1231. for God.

  1232. And the Spirit

  1233. gives us the power

  1234. to do so.

1235. It gives us the power

  1236. to resist sin.

  1237. Beloved,

  1238. we do not have

  1239. to sin

  1240. any longer.

  1241. We've been set free

  1242. from it.

  1243. We're no longer

  1244. slaves to it.

  1245. Romans 6, 9-11.

  1246. We know that Christ

  1247. being raised

  1248. from the dead

  1249. will never die again.

  1250. Death no longer

  1251. has dominion

  1252. over Him.

  1253. For the death

  1254. He died,

  1255. He died to sin

  1256. once for all.

  1257. But the life

  1258. He lives,

  1259. He lives

  1260. to God.

  1261. You see this?

  1262. He died a death

  1263. to sin.

  1264. Now,

  1265. being raised,

  1266. He lives to God.

  1267. Verse 11,

  1268. so you also

  1269. must consider

  1270. yourselves

  1271. dead to sin

  1272. and alive to God

  1273. in Christ Jesus.

  1274. You have been given

  1275. the ability

  1276. to keep God's standard

  1277. now.

  1278. Will you?

  1279. It's not likely.

  1280. It's not likely.

  1281. But you can

  1282. and you should.

  1283. We've also been given

1284. the power by the Spirit

  1285. to be obedient.

  1286. to not only do

  1287. the things

  1288. that we're not

  1289. supposed to do,

1290. but to do the things

  1291. that we are

  1292. supposed to do.

  1293. Paul again,

  1294. Colossians 3,

  1295. 1 and 2.

  1296. If then

  1297. you have been

  1298. raised with Christ,

  1299. seek the things

  1300. that are above

  1301. where Christ is,

  1302. seated at the right

  1303. hand of God.

  1304. Set your minds

1305. on things that are above,

  1306. not on things

  1307. that are on earth.

  1308. We have been given

  1309. the ability

  1310. in Christ

  1311. by His Spirit

  1312. because of

  1313. the resurrection

  1314. to live

  1315. in this way.

  1316. Beloved,

  1317. there is such a

  1318. great mission

  1319. set before us

1320. as the people of God.

  1321. The exaltation of God,

  1322. declaring the supremacy

  1323. of Christ

  1324. in all things

  1325. to all peoples.

  1326. We've been given

1327. the power to do this,

  1328. to resist sin,

1329. to be obedient to this.

  1330. To be the disciples

1331. that Mark is calling us

  1332. to be all

  1333. throughout the text.

  1334. To give up

  1335. all things

  1336. for the sake

  1337. of Jesus Christ

  1338. and the gospel

  1339. of the kingdom

  1340. of God.

  1341. I'll repeat to you

  1342. the motto

  1343. of the Reformers

  1344. post-Tenebrous Lux.

  1345. They meant it

  1346. certainly for their

  1347. reform from Catholicism

  1348. coming out of

  1349. the dark ages,

  1350. the wonderful

  1351. translations of

  1352. Bibles that were

  1353. taking place.

  1354. So much light

  1355. in that sense.

  1356. They meant it

  1357. also in terms

  1358. of the way

  1359. in which a dark

  1360. heart is turned

  1361. to God

  1362. that the light

  1363. of the gospel

  1364. would penetrate it.

  1365. And I would say

  1366. to you this morning

  1367. that this very same

  1368. motto should be

  1369. true of us

  1370. today.

  1371. That those ways

  1372. in which we have

  1373. not pursued God

  1374. in light

  1375. of the glorious

  1376. truth of the

  1377. resurrection

  1378. of Jesus Christ,

  1379. we should allow

  1380. the light of the

  1381. gospel to penetrate

  1382. those dark places

  1383. in our hearts

  1384. as well.

  1385. If you don't

  1386. know Christ,

  1387. your fate is

  1388. eternal damnation.

  1389. And you need to

  1390. hear that.

  1391. You need to be

  1392. warned of the

  1393. judgment that is

  1394. to come.

  1395. God is a good,

  1396. loving God.

  1397. He's also a just,

  1398. condemning God.

  1399. He has a standard

  1400. that none of us

  1401. have held

  1402. and we must

  1403. have Christ's

  1404. righteousness

  1405. on the day

  1406. of judgment.

  1407. So please,

  1408. I plead with you,

  1409. if you have not

  1410. placed your faith

  1411. in Christ,

  1412. allow the light

  1413. of the gospel

  1414. to dawn in your

  1415. hearts for the

  1416. first time

  1417. this day.

  1418. The call of the

  1419. gospel is not

  1420. to walk an aisle

  1421. and repeat after me.

  1422. The call of the

  1423. gospel is to

  1424. repent,

  1425. turn from your

  1426. sin,

  1427. and believe

  1428. in the person

  1429. and work.

  1430. His life,

  1431. death,

  1432. burial,

  1433. resurrection,

  1434. ascension of

  1435. Jesus Christ.

  1436. Let's pray together.

  1437. Amen.
