  1. Well, last week we concluded our verse-by-verse exposition of Mark's Gospel account.

  2. ! And this week we're going to begin our study of Paul's letter to the church at Colossae.

  3. ! So if you will, please with me, turn to the book of Colossians.

  4. Know that I say this often, and I say it because I mean it, but also for the sake of

  5. those who haven't heard me say it before, I'm immensely thankful to be part of a church

  6. that values verse-by-verse exposition. It has value for a number of reasons.

  7. Firstly, we need to hear all that the Word of God has to say to us. It is His inspired,

  8. sufficient, authoritative Word, and none of it's unimportant. All of it is incredibly important.

  9. I think it's helpful in our study verse-by-verse to help you better learn how to study the Bible

  10. for yourself. Me and others that help here, taking week-by-week and helping you place in context

  11. various texts of Scripture. We hope in doing so that we're looking at in a broad sense what

  12. other parts of the Scripture have to say. So as we're going through a New Testament epistle,

  13. for example, to pull in the Old Testament references and speak of them well, I know it's good for me

  14. because it keeps me from having pet topics that I preach upon all the time or being able to skip

  15. over hard things in the Scriptures, which I so very much want to do some weeks, but yet the schedule

  16. is before me and the task is at hand. And so just to reiterate to you the value and importance of that,

  17. as we're about to begin another verse-by-verse exposition of a book of the Bible, in this case,

  18. Colossians. I want you to know that my singular goal in today's sermon is to get you excited

  19. about what God would have to say to us in our study of Paul's letter to the Colossian believers,

  20. that it has relevance and meaning bearing on our lives as we work through this in the coming months.

  21. Colossians, as part of God's holy writ, has a great deal of significance for us today.

  22. But in order for us to fully appreciate that significance, we must rightly understand the

  23. original intent. So we'll begin our study by asking a series of questions of the letter.

  24. Question number one. Who wrote Colossians?

  25. Now in the very salutation in verse one, we see that the letter was written by Paul. Paul,

  26. an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and Timothy, our brother. Some people say that

  27. Colossians was written by Paul and Timothy. It's possible that Timothy was the scribe, the one who

  28. was actually writing down a secretary, so to speak, as Paul spoke the words to him. But certainly,

  29. we see the use of plural pronouns, we, throughout the text. It is a proper assumption to think that

  30. Paul is referring to himself and Timothy when he says we, but also much use of the singular pronoun

  31. I. It was right to understand that Paul himself is the ultimate author of this text. Colossians 4.18,

  32. he says, I, Paul, write this greeting with my own hand. So potentially, the very closing of it, he

  33. himself wrote out to emphasize that it was, in fact, a letter from him. Now there are some arguments

  34. against Paul's authorship, but they're so very weak that they're not worth mentioning in this setting

  35. and at this time. You are welcome to study that. I have some books you can borrow on it if you would

  36. care to, but they're incredibly weak arguments. Church history, certainly contained within the text

  37. itself, is the name of Paul, the context in which he writes, the way that your scriptures actually are

  38. organized as has to do with who they believe wrote this letter. If you like with me, turn to your table

  39. of contents in your copy of God's Word. For those of you who don't know, your scripture is not arranged

  40. chronologically, but rather categorically. In the New Testament, it's hard to find that table of contents,

  41. isn't it? Probably a good sign. It means you know your Bible if you can't find your table of contents.

  42. If you look at your table of contents, we have in the New Testament, Matthew, Mark, Luke,

  43. John. These are the gospel accounts. They're historical accounts of the life, death, resurrection,

  44. ascension of Jesus Christ, and then the book of Acts, which is also, some people rightly call it the

  45. acts of Jesus Christ or the acts of the Holy Spirit, but also a historical narrative of the things that

  46. happened after Jesus' ascension and the sending of the Holy Spirit. You then can see Romans,

  47. down through 2nd Thessalonians. These are Pauline epistles, letters that Paul wrote to specific

  48. churches. The church at Corinth, the church at Galatia, Ephesus, Philippi, Colossae, Thessalonica.

  49. Then you have the pastoral epistles, also written by Paul, 1st and 2nd Timothy, letters written to

  50. Timothy, Titus, and Philemon. And then Hebrews, which is a letter written to Jewish believers, but we're not

  51. sure who in fact authored it. Some believe that Paul did, some do not, and no one can quite agree

  52. on this, and we're all okay with that. So we stick it there. It's kind of the dividing point after

  53. Paul's writing, the book of Hebrews. And then from there on you have other epistles by various apostles,

  54. and then finally the book of Revelation by John. So that's why it's organized in this fashion,

  55. and how Colossians finds itself in the midst of the Pauline epistles. And it's important for us to know,

  56. to rightly understand the book itself. Who wrote it? Paul wrote it. Clay said for us very well last

  57. week, so I won't get into all of the details of it, but when we believe that the Word of God is the

  58. inspired Word of God, that it was written by God Himself, that it's breathed out, that it's exhaled out

  59. by Him, that God did not circumnavigate the personalities and the context of the writer

  60. himself. So we've got to know who Paul is, and why he would have written in the particular way that he

  61. wrote as he was being carried along by the Spirit. So who wrote Colossians? Paul. Secondly, when and where

  62. was Colossians written? When and where? And you might wonder why I ask it in that way. When and where?

  63. The question of when is largely dependent on the answer to the question where. Colossians is a

  64. prison epistle. It was written from a prison cell, from a sentence that was given to Paul. Imprisonment is

  65. mentioned in chapter 4, verse 3, and chapter 4, verse 18, as well as some form of suffering, but we can

  66. rightly assume the suffering in a prison mentioned in chapter 1, verse 24. So the debate about when

  67. really has to do with which imprisonment. Paul was imprisoned a number of times, and we have to know

  68. which imprisonment it was to rightly set the field for when, in fact, it was written. The wide scholastic

  69. agreement, and again, there are some varying arguments, a little stronger than some of the

  70. arguments against Paul's authorship together, but there's some other arguments, but again, not worth

  71. getting into. The wide scholastic agreement is that it is most likely written during Paul's Roman

  72. imprisonment, which dates the letter at approximately 62 AD, which had been around the same time that the

  73. letter to the Ephesians and to Philemon were written, right? So AD 62, from Roman imprisonment some

  74. thousand miles away from Colossae. So when and where, written in Roman imprisonment around AD 62.

  75. Thirdly, to whom was Colossians written? A little easier off the top, we can answer fairly quickly the

  76. church at Colossae, chapter, or excuse me, verse 2, chapter 1 of the salutation, to the saints and

  77. faithful brothers in Christ at Colossae, but it's good and important for us to understand a few

  78. things about this city before we proceed in our study. Colossae was located in the Lycus River Valley

  79. of West Central Asia Minor, and if you want to later look at a map, this is in modern-day Turkey,

  80. approximately in the center of modern-day Turkey. It's important to know that Paul did not establish

  81. the church at Colossae, but it was likely the fruit of his three-year ministry in Ephesus,

  82. Ephesus being about 120 miles west of Colossae. The text tells us in chapter 1, verse 7, that Epaphras

  83. was the one who came and spoke the Word of God to the people of the Colossian church. So it's presumed

  84. that Epaphras traveled to Ephesus, became a convert to Jesus Christ while he was there, and then,

  85. as a proper disciple of Jesus Christ, went home and made disciples and founded a church back in his

  86. hometown of Colossae. Colossae, at one time, before Paul's time, was a very significant city. In fact,

  87. it had become famous for a particular high-quality dark red wool that was actually known as Colossian

  88. wool, and you can find references to that in other historical works. It was located at the crossroads

  89. of two major highways going through the region. But before Paul's time, the Romans moved the road

  90. to pass through Laodicea, which was 12 miles to the west of Colossae, and Heropolis, which was 15 miles

  91. to the northwest. They built a bypass, so to speak, and sort of left Colossae off the map, and so it had

  92. declined in its prominence. In fact, it was a rather insignificant city altogether in the days of Paul.

  93. J.B. Lightfoot, this rather famous commentary on Colossians, wrote,

  94. Colossae was the least important church to which any epistle of St. Paul was addressed.

  95. So, a rather insignificant church as regards the spread of the gospel, because the city itself was

  96. rather insignificant. Those of you who live in Dahlonega and Dawsonville, even though 400 rips right

  97. through the middle of Dawsonville, may be able to relate to this. Those of you who live in Gainesville

  98. have no idea what's being talked about, because it is the chicken capital of the world.

  99. Really, all fairly insignificant in the large scheme of things.

  100. And our little church can feel that way at times. Rather insignificant, hidden behind the hill on the

  101. side of Highway 60 South, with a deteriorating sign, which is going to be fixed very soon.

  102. Who are we that we should even have the Word of God put before us, that God might speak to us from this

  103. letter today. All the same, even though the church at Colossae seemed fairly insignificant,

  104. note Paul's care for them as a church, and for all the churches for that matter. Colossians 2,

    Colossians 2:1

  105. verse 1 and 2, he says,

  106. For I want you to know how great a struggle I have for you and for those at Laodicea,

  107. and for all who have not seen me face to face, that their hearts may be encouraged, being knit

  108. together in love, to reach all the riches of full assurance of understanding and the knowledge

  109. of God's mystery, which is Christ. He has a great struggle, a contest, or a battle, because he has

  110. great concern for any who claim the name of Jesus Christ. His suggestion by all of this is that there is

  111. no insignificant extension of God's redemptive work in the world, that if you are a body of Christ,

  112. then you are His, and therefore very significant. The city itself, because of the region in which

  113. Colossae was located, would have been primarily Gentile. And for those of you who don't know, this would

  114. just simply mean not Jewish. This area particularly would have been Greek. But there was also likely a

  115. significant Jewish population. Josephus, a Jewish historian in antiquities, said that Antichius the

  116. Great settled 2,000 Jewish families in the area in 213 BC. So a little over 200 years ago, a massive

  117. number of Jewish families were moved and settled in the area. So it was likely also a very Jewish

  118. populated region. So both a mix here of Jew and Gentile in the area. So that's who it was written

  119. to, the Colossians. Number four, why was Colossians written? Why was Colossians written? Now the letter

  120. itself makes no explicit claim about its purpose. However, the warnings contained within make it clear

  121. that it is intended to encourage the Colossians to resist some kind of erroneous teaching that's going

  122. on at the time. The actual teaching itself is not stated. We don't know for sure. And there's a lot

  123. of conjecture about that. There were a number of heresies floating around in that day. An example of

  124. one would be Gnosticism. Certainly there seems to be some Gnostic elements in the heresy, but we can't say

  125. for sure that it was the Gnostics that were teaching in the area. So there's this mix of

  126. heresy going on, and Paul seems to be writing to correct those things. Many people believe that,

  127. as we know, Epaphras is with Paul at the writing of this letter. You can see that in chapter 4,

  128. that Epaphras has actually traveled to see Paul in Rome, where he's in prison but in a house arrest

  129. kind of a situation. So he's able to go and see him, and Paul, hearing about the trouble that's

  130. happening in this church, writes them to help do away with some of these heresies. Due to the

  131. population of Colossi being made up of both Gentiles and Jews, it is no surprise, or it shouldn't be,

  132. that this heresy contains both Jewish and pagan elements. I'll tell you what I mean. Firstly,

  133. the pagan elements, the false philosophy of the Greeks. The Greeks loved knowledge. They worshipped

  134. knowledge. And they prided themselves in the sophistication of their philosophical systems.

  135. If you study philosophy, you're going to study the Greeks as college students. They actually believed

  136. that the Gospel was too simplistic. It was too easy. It wasn't worthy of believing in because it wasn't

  137. complex enough. Some evidence of that is in Paul's writing in 1 Corinthians 1, 22 and 23.

  138. For Jews demand signs, and Greeks seek wisdom. But we preach Christ crucified, right? The simple

  139. message of the Gospel. Christ crucified. A stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles. It was so

  140. simple that it was silly in their thinking. Colossians 2, verse 4. Paul says, I say this in order that no one

    Colossians 2:4

  141. may delude you with plausible arguments. And in chapter 2, verse 8, see to it that no one takes you

  142. captive by philosophy and empty deceit according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits

  143. of the world and not according to Christ. So you've got this false philosophy of the Greeks. You also have

  144. this Judaistic legalism happening as well. The Colossian heretics embraced elements of Jewish

  145. ceremonialism. They taught that circumcision was necessary for salvation. They also taught rigid

  146. self-denial and harsh treatment of the body. Things like keeping the Jewish dietary laws and observing

  147. holy days. Chapter 2, verse 16. Paul writes, therefore let no one pass judgment on you in questions of food

  148. and drink or with regard to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath. And verse 18, let no one disqualify

  149. you, insisting on asceticism and worship of angels, going on in details about visions puffed up without

  150. reason by his sensuous mind. So both radical groups suggested that salvation necessitated Christ plus

  151. something else. And we'll get into the details of what those something else's were in our coming study

  152. together. But all of them were saying Jesus Christ crucified was not enough. You must have Christ

  153. plus something else. And this is what Paul seeks to set straight. So question five, what does Colossians

  154. teach? What does Colossians teach? What is the overarching theme of the letter? Because certainly it teaches

  155. many things. But thematically, what is Paul trying to communicate to the Colossian believers and us

  156. today? The sufficiency and supremacy of Jesus Christ.

  157. The sufficiency and supremacy of Jesus Christ. Says it in this way, this kind of perfectly sums it up.

  158. Christ is all. Christ is all and in all. Chapter 3, verse 11. He is God. Chapter 2, verse 9. He is the creator.

  159. Chapter 1, verse 16. Jesus is the savior. Chapter 1, verse 20 and 2, 13 through 14. He is the head of the church.

  160. Chapter 1, verse 18. And kind of wrapping it all up in chapter 1, verse 18. That in everything, Jesus Christ

  161. is supreme.

  162. Chapter 1 has much to do

  163. with the vision and mission statement

  164. of Christ's family church,

  165. desiring that in all things,

  166. Jesus Christ would be shown as supreme.

  167. So the sufficiency and the supremacy

  168. of Jesus Christ.

  169. That He is all and in all.

  170. That He is enough.

  171. So last question,

  172. how does Colossians pertain to us?

  173. We've got some background settings,

  174. some general broad understanding

  175. of the book itself and the writer,

  176. the people that were receiving it.

  177. So how does it then pertain to us?

  178. What is the relevance for us today?

  179. Because certainly we don't deal

  180. with the exact same heretical teachings.

  181. No one's coming into this congregation

  182. and suggesting that you must be circumcised

  183. to be a Christian.

  184. The heresies of our day

  185. are much different,

  186. but the doctrines taught in Colossians

  187. speak to all of our falsehoods as well.

  188. We live in a day

  189. when science seeks to explain away

  190. the very existence of God.

  191. A day when the deity of Jesus

  192. is widely questioned.

  193. When the truth of God

  194. is being laid aside

  195. for a false unity

  196. amongst the religions of the world.

  197. We live in a day

  198. when grace is peddled cheaply.

  199. We live in a day

  200. when followers of Jesus

  201. think they don't need the church

  202. or that it is acceptable

  203. to merely show up

  204. to a congregational meeting

  205. to consume a presentation

  206. rather than being a part of the life

  207. of the body of Christ.

  208. We live in a day

  209. when the definition or role

  210. of the family

  211. is being redefined

  212. and redistributed.

  213. And Colossians speaks

  214. to all of these things

  215. and some more.

  216. It's timely for us

  217. because it answers

  218. all of these

  219. with absolute authority

  220. as Paul's letter

  221. to the church at Colossians

  222. is Scripture

  223. and should be treated as such.

  224. This is the word

  225. of Almighty God

  226. for us.

  227. And with all of that in mind,

  228. I'm now going to read

  229. the entirety of the letter to you.

  230. Now,

  231. I know that some of you

  232. may be already going,

  233. oh my word.

  234. It only takes ten minutes.

  235. It's a rather short epistle.

  236. It contains within it

  237. some phenomenal truth

  238. for how short it is.

  239. It certainly has had

  240. more impact on the church

  241. for its length

  242. than probably any other

  243. of Paul's epistles.

  244. It is important

  245. that we publicly read

  246. the Scripture.

  247. After today,

  248. certainly no one can say

  249. that we don't read

  250. the Word of God

  251. in our meetings

  252. together.

  253. Remember that the way

  254. this would have been received

  255. would have been a letter

  256. on a piece of parchment

  257. and it would have been read

  258. to a congregation

  259. meeting much the way

  260. we are today.

  261. Many people

  262. would have been illiterate.

  263. They definitely wouldn't have

  264. had a copy of it

  265. in front of them.

  266. I'm going to read

  267. from the English Standard Version.

  268. If you have a copy

  269. and you'd like to follow along,

  270. feel free.

  271. If you don't,

  272. it might be better

  273. for you just to listen

  274. to what's being said.

  275. To imagine yourself

  276. in that day

  277. living in a time

  278. with much heresy

  279. running around

  280. and trying to hear

  281. what it is Paul has to say

  282. to set all of that

  283. straight.

  284. This would have always

  285. been taken together

  286. and sometimes

  287. we're so damaging

  288. to the Word of God

  289. because we piecemeal it up.

  290. Because we pull excerpts

  291. from here,

  292. we pull excerpts from there,

  293. and we ignore

  294. the greater context

  295. of what's happening.

  296. And so there's some value

  297. in us seeing it

  298. collectively together

  299. this morning.

  300. So here we go.

  301. I'll do my best

  302. to read it well to you

  303. so you can follow along.

  304. Colossians 1.1

  305. Paul,

  306. an apostle of Christ Jesus

  307. by the will of God

  308. and Timothy our brother

  309. to the saints

  310. and faithful brothers

  311. in Christ

  312. at Colossae,

  313. grace to you

  314. and peace

  315. from God our Father.

  316. We always thank God

  317. the Father of our Lord

  318. Jesus Christ

  319. when we pray for you

  320. since we heard of your faith

  321. in Christ Jesus

  322. and of the love that you have

  323. for all the saints

  324. because of the hope

  325. laid up for you in heaven.

  326. Of this you have heard before

  327. in the word of truth,

  328. the gospel,

  329. which has come to you

  330. as indeed in the whole world

  331. it is bearing fruit

  332. and growing

  333. as it also does among you

  334. since the day you heard it

  335. and understood the grace

  336. of God in truth

  337. just as you learned it

  338. from Epaphras,

  339. our beloved fellow servant.

  340. He is a faithful minister

  341. of Christ on your behalf

  342. and has made known to us

  343. your love in the Spirit.

  344. And so,

  345. from the day we heard,

  346. we have not ceased

  347. to pray for you

  348. asking that you may be filled

  349. with the knowledge

  350. of his will

  351. and all spiritual wisdom

  352. and understanding

  353. so as to walk

  354. in a manner

  355. worthy of the Lord,

  356. fully pleasing to him,

  357. bearing fruit

  358. in every good work

  359. and increasing

  360. in the knowledge of God.

  361. May you be strengthened

  362. with all power

  363. according to his glorious might

  364. for all endurance

  365. and patience with joy,

  366. giving thanks to the Father

  367. who has qualified you

  368. to share in the inheritance

  369. of the saints in light.

  370. He has delivered us

  371. from the domain of darkness

  372. and transferred us

  373. to the kingdom

  374. of his beloved Son

  375. in whom we have redemption,

  376. the forgiveness of sins.

  377. He is the image

  378. of the invisible God,

  379. the firstborn

  380. of all creation.

  381. For by him

  382. all things were created

  383. in heaven and on earth,

  384. visible and invisible,

  385. whether thrones

  386. or dominions

  387. or rulers or authorities,

  388. all things were created

  389. through him

  390. and for him.

  391. And he is before all things

  392. and in him

  393. all things hold together.

  394. And he is the head

  395. of the body,

  396. the church.

  397. He is the beginning,

  398. the firstborn from the dead,

  399. that in everything

  400. he might be preeminent.

  401. For in him

  402. all the fullness of God

  403. was pleased to dwell

  404. and through him

  405. to reconcile to himself

  406. all things,

  407. whether on earth

  408. or in heaven,

  409. making peace

  410. by the blood

  411. of his cross.

  412. And you,

  413. who once were alienated

  414. and hostile in mind,

  415. doing evil deeds,

  416. he is now reconciled

  417. in his body of flesh

  418. by his death

  419. in order to present you

  420. holy and blameless

  421. and above reproach

  422. before him,

  423. if indeed you continue

  424. in the faith,

  425. stable and steadfast,

  426. not shifting from the hope

  427. of the gospel

  428. that you heard,

  429. which has been proclaimed

  430. in all creation

  431. under heaven

  432. and of which I,

  433. Paul,

  434. became a minister.

  435. Now I rejoice

  436. in my sufferings

  437. for your sake

  438. and in my flesh

  439. I am filling up

  440. what is lacking

  441. in Christ's afflictions

  442. for the sake of his body,

  443. that is,

  444. the church,

  445. of which I became

  446. a minister

  447. according to the stewardship

  448. from God

  449. that was given to me

  450. for you

  451. to make the word of God

  452. fully known,

  453. the mystery hidden

  454. for ages and generations

  455. but now revealed

  456. to his saints.

  457. To them God chose

  458. to make known

  459. how great among you Gentiles

  460. are the riches

  461. of the glory

  462. of this mystery,

  463. which is Christ in you,

  464. the hope of glory.

  465. Him we proclaim,

  466. warning everyone

  467. and teaching everyone

  468. with all wisdom

  469. that we may present

  470. everyone mature in Christ.

  471. For this I toil,

  472. struggling with all his energy

  473. that he powerfully works

  474. within me.

  475. For I want you to know

  476. how great a struggle

  477. I have for you

  478. and for those at Laodicea.

  479. For all who have not seen me

  480. face to face,

  481. for their hearts

  482. may be encouraged,

  483. excuse me,

  484. that their hearts

  485. may be encouraged,

  486. being knit together in love

  487. to reach all the riches

  488. of full assurance

  489. of understanding

  490. and the knowledge

  491. of God's mystery,

  492. which is Christ,

  493. in whom are hidden

  494. all the treasures

  495. of wisdom and knowledge.

  496. I say this in order

  497. that no one may delude you

  498. with plausible arguments,

  499. for though I am absent

  500. in body,

  501. yet I am with you

  502. in spirit,

  503. rejoicing to see

  504. your good order

  505. and the firmness

  506. of your faith in Christ.

  507. Therefore,

  508. as you receive Christ Jesus

  509. the Lord,

  510. so walk in Him,

  511. rooted and built up in Him

  512. and established in the faith,

  513. just as you were taught,

  514. abounding in thanksgiving.

  515. See to it that no one

  516. takes you captive

  517. by philosophy

  518. and empty deceit,

  519. according to human tradition,

  520. according to the elemental

  521. spirits of the world,

  522. and not according to Christ.

  523. For in Him

  524. the whole fullness

  525. of deity dwells bodily,

  526. and you have been filled

  527. in Him

  528. who is the head

  529. of all rule

  530. and authority.

  531. In Him also

  532. you were circumcised

  533. with a circumcision

  534. made without hands,

  535. by putting off

  536. the body of the flesh

  537. by the circumcision

  538. of Christ,

  539. having been buried

  540. with Him in baptism,

  541. in which you were also

  542. raised with Him

  543. through faith

  544. in the powerful working

  545. of God

  546. who raised Him

  547. from the dead.

  548. And you

  549. who were dead

  550. in your trespasses

  551. and the uncircumcision

  552. of your flesh,

  553. God made alive

  554. together with Him,

  555. having forgiven us

  556. all our trespasses

  557. by canceling the record

  558. of debt that stood

  559. against us

  560. with its legal demands.

  561. This He set aside,

  562. nailing it to the cross.

  563. He disarmed the rulers

  564. and authorities

  565. and put them

  566. to open shame

  567. by triumphing

  568. over them in Him.

  569. Therefore,

  570. let no one pass judgment

  571. on you in questions

  572. of food and drink

  573. or with regard

  574. to a festival

  575. or a new moon

  576. or a Sabbath.

  577. These are a shadow

  578. of the things to come,

  579. but the substance

  580. belongs to Christ.

  581. Let no one disqualify you,

  582. insisting on asceticism

  583. and worship of angels,

  584. going on in detail

  585. about visions,

  586. puffed up without reason

  587. by His sensuous mind

  588. and not holding fast

  589. to the head

  590. from whom the whole body,

  591. nourished and knit together

  592. through its joints

  593. and ligaments,

  594. grows with a growth

  595. that is from God.

  596. If with Christ you died

  597. to the elemental spirits

  598. of the world,

  599. why,

  600. as if you were still alive

  601. in the world,

  602. do you submit to regulations,

  603. do not handle,

  604. do not taste,

  605. do not touch,

  606. referring to things

  607. that all perish

  608. as they are used,

  609. according to human precepts

  610. and teachings?

  611. These have indeed

  612. an appearance of wisdom

  613. in promoting self-made religion

  614. and asceticism

  615. and severity to the body,

  616. but they are of no value

  617. in stopping the indulgence

  618. of the flesh.

  619. If then you have been

  620. raised with Christ,

  621. seek the things

  622. that are above,

  623. where Christ is,

  624. seated at the right hand

  625. of God.

  626. Set your minds

  627. on things that are above,

  628. not on things

  629. that are on earth.

  630. For you have died

  631. and your life is hidden

  632. with Christ in God.

  633. When Christ,

  634. who is your life,

  635. appears,

  636. then you also will appear

  637. with Him in glory.

  638. Put to death,

  639. therefore,

  640. what is earthly in you,

  641. sexual immorality,

  642. impurity,

  643. passion,

  644. evil desire,

  645. and covetousness,

  646. which is idolatry.

  647. On account of these,

  648. the wrath of God

  649. is coming.

  650. In these you too

  651. once walked

  652. when you were living

  653. in them,

  654. but now you must

  655. put them all away,

  656. anger,

  657. wrath,

  658. malice,

  659. slander,

  660. and obscene talk

  661. from your mouth.

  662. Do not lie to one another,

  663. seeing that you have put off

  664. the old self

  665. with its practices,

  666. and have put on

  667. the new self

  668. which is being renewed

  669. in knowledge

  670. after the image

  671. of its creator.

  672. Here there is not

  673. Greek and Jew,

  674. circumcised and uncircumcised,

  675. barbarian,

  676. Scythian,

  677. slave,

  678. free,

  679. but Christ is all

  680. and in all.

  681. Put on then

  682. as God's chosen ones,

  683. holy and beloved,

  684. compassionate hearts,

  685. kindness,

  686. humility,

  687. meekness,

  688. and patience,

  689. bearing with one another,

  690. and if one has a complaint

  691. against another,

  692. forgiving each other

  693. as the Lord has forgiven you,

  694. so you also must forgive.

  695. And above all these,

  696. put on love

  697. which binds everything together

  698. in perfect harmony.

  699. And let the peace of Christ

  700. rule in your hearts

  701. to which indeed you were called

  702. in one body,

  703. and be thankful.

  704. Let the word of Christ

  705. dwell in you richly,

  706. teaching and admonishing

  707. one another in all wisdom,

  708. singing psalms and hymns

  709. and spiritual songs

  710. with thankfulness

  711. in your hearts to God.

  712. And whatever you do,

  713. in word or deed,

  714. do everything in the name

  715. of the Lord Jesus,

  716. giving thanks to God the Father

  717. through Him.

  718. Wives,

  719. submit to your husbands

  720. as is fitting in the Lord.

  721. Husbands,

  722. love your wives

  723. and do not be harsh with them.

  724. Children,

  725. obey your parents

  726. in everything

  727. for this pleases the Lord.

  728. Fathers,

  729. do not provoke your children

  730. lest they become discouraged.

  731. Slaves,

  732. obey in everything

  733. those who are

  734. your earthly masters,

  735. not by way of eye service

  736. as people pleasers,

  737. but with sincerity of heart,

  738. fearing the Lord.

  739. Whatever you do,

  740. work heartily,

  741. as for the Lord

  742. and not for men,

  743. knowing that from the Lord

  744. you will receive the inheritance

  745. as your reward.

  746. You are serving the Lord Christ.

  747. For the wrongdoer will be paid back

  748. for the wrong he has done,

  749. and there is no partiality.

  750. Masters,

  751. treat your slaves

  752. justly and fairly,

  753. knowing that you also

  754. have a master in heaven.

  755. Continue steadfastly in prayer,

  756. being watchful in it

  757. with thanksgiving.

  758. At the same time,

  759. pray also for us

  760. that God may open to us

  761. a door for the word

  762. to declare the mystery of Christ,

  763. on account of which

  764. I am in prison,

  765. that I may make it clear

  766. which is how I ought to speak.

  767. Walk in wisdom

  768. toward outsiders,

  769. making the best use

  770. of the time.

  771. Let your speech

  772. always be gracious,

  773. seasoned with salt,

  774. so that you may know

  775. how you ought to answer

  776. each person.

  777. Tychicus will tell you

  778. about my activities.

  779. He is a beloved brother

  780. and faithful minister

  781. and fellow servant

  782. in the Lord.

  783. I have sent him to you

  784. for this very purpose,

  785. that you may know

  786. how we are

  787. and that he may encourage

  788. your hearts.

  789. And with him,

  790. Onesimus,

  791. our faithful and beloved brother,

  792. who is one of you,

  793. they will tell you

  794. of everything

  795. that has taken place here.

  796. Aristarchus,

  797. my fellow prisoner,

  798. greets you.

  799. And Mark,

  800. the cousin of Bartimus,

  801. concerning whom

  802. you have received instructions,

  803. if he comes to you,

  804. welcome him.

  805. And Jesus,

  806. who is called Justice,

  807. these are the only men

  808. of the circumcision

  809. among my fellow workers

  810. for the kingdom of God,

  811. and they have been

  812. a comfort for me.

  813. Epaphras,

  814. who is one of you,

  815. a servant of Christ Jesus,

  816. greets you,

  817. always struggling

  818. on your behalf

  819. in his prayers,

  820. that you may stand mature

  821. and fully assured

  822. in all the will of God.

  823. For I bear him witness

  824. that he has worked hard

  825. for you

  826. and for those in Laodicea

  827. and in Heropolis.

  828. Luke,

  829. the beloved physician,

  830. greets you,

  831. as does Demas.

  832. Give my greetings

  833. to the brothers

  834. at Laodicea

  835. and to Nympha

  836. and the church

  837. in her house.

  838. And when this letter

  839. has been read among you,

  840. have it also read

  841. in the church at Laodicea

  842. and see that you also

  843. read the letter

  844. from Laodicea.

  845. And say to Archippus,

  846. see that you fulfill

  847. the ministry

  848. that you have received

  849. in the Lord.

  850. I, Paul,

  851. write this greeting

  852. with my own hand.

  853. Remember my chains.

  854. Grace be with you.

  855. So this is how

  856. it would have been read

  857. originally

  858. to the church

  859. at Colossae.

  860. And this is God's

  861. word to us

  862. written for His glory

  863. and our good.

  864. We would all do well

  865. to listen to it

  866. in order to believe

  867. its promises

  868. and obey

  869. its commands.

  870. Let's look in conclusion

  871. at the first two verses

  872. in just a bit more detail

  873. and then we'll close out

  874. our time

  875. together.

  876. Let me read to you again

  877. Colossians 1, 1, and 2.

  878. Paul,

  879. an apostle of Christ Jesus

  880. by the will of God

  881. and Timothy, our brother,

  882. to the saints

  883. and faithful brothers

  884. in Christ at Colossae.

  885. Grace to you

  886. and peace

  887. from God our Father.

  888. A very familiar salutation.

  889. Most of Paul's openings

  890. were very similar

  891. to this.

  892. He establishes first off

  893. that he is an apostle

  894. of Christ Jesus

  895. by the will of God.

  896. And I believe he

  897. intends to do two things here.

  898. Firstly,

  899. that this is an expression

  900. of his entire

  901. theological perspective

  902. that all things happen

  903. by the will of God.

  904. You remember that

  905. Paul was once Saul,

  906. a very zealous persecutor

  907. of the church of Jesus Christ.

  908. That he had every intention

  909. of imprisoning

  910. all that he could

  911. who claimed to follow Jesus.

  912. He was on his way

  913. to do this very thing

  914. when Jesus encountered him

  915. on the road to Damascus.

  916. You can read about that

  917. in Acts 9, 1-9.

  918. Took hold of him.

  919. Changed his very personhood

  920. in these moments.

  921. According to Paul,

  922. God works all things

  923. according to the counsel

  924. of his will.

  925. It's Ephesians 1, 11.

  926. I believe he's trying to say

  927. his entire theological perspective

  928. that if things come to pass,

  929. they come to pass

  930. by God's will.

  931. I would not be an apostle

  932. of Jesus Christ.

  933. I would not be a follower

  934. of Jesus Christ

  935. if it had not been

  936. for God's intervention.

  937. I would not stand before you

  938. this morning

  939. caring at all

  940. about what Paul had to say

  941. to the church at Colossae

  942. if it were not

  943. for God's intervention

  944. in my life.

  945. If God had not turned me

  946. from an enemy

  947. to a friend

  948. by the will of God.

  949. We are what we are.

  950. Secondly,

  951. he needed to make very clear

  952. to the Colossians

  953. and to us

  954. their and our obligation

  955. to listen to him.

  956. He was an apostle.

  957. Capital A Apostle.

  958. A sent one.

  959. Sent directly from Jesus Christ.

  960. Had spent time with him.

  961. Had been taught by him.

  962. This is a special category

  963. in church history.

  964. There have not been apostles since.

  965. Little A sent into the world,

  966. but not capital A.

  967. Falling in this lineage

  968. of Jesus' apostles and Paul.

  969. He was set apart

  970. for missionary service

  971. by the Holy Spirit.

  972. Acts 13.2.

  973. Commissioned with this calling.

  974. He authored the vast majority

  975. of the New Testament.

  976. He has the authority

  977. from God

  978. to speak to us.

  979. So Paul,

  980. an apostle of Christ Jesus

  981. by the will of God.

  982. And then in verse 2,

  983. he greets the saints

  984. and faithful brothers.

  985. And these are not

  986. two distinct groups.

  987. He's kind of piling up

  988. description

  989. of the people

  990. at the church

  991. at Colossae.

  992. They're merely qualifiers

  993. of the same group.

  994. Saints,

  995. the Greek word,

  996. refers to separation.

  997. These are people

  998. who have been

  999. set apart from sin

  1000. and set apart

  1001. to God.

  1002. These are people

  1003. who have been changed.

  1004. No longer sinners

1005. in need of a Savior,

  1006. but people who have

  1007. received a Savior.

  1008. They are now

  1009. in a new category.

  1010. Saints.

  1011. And the fact that

  1012. they're faithful brothers

  1013. notes the source

  1014. of that separation,

  1015. which is saving faith.

  1016. They had believed

  1017. in the person

  1018. and work

  1019. of Jesus Christ.

  1020. This is the way

  1021. and the only way

  1022. in which God

  1023. saves mankind.

  1024. The great issue

  1025. with mankind

  1026. is that we're separated

  1027. from God

  1028. because of sin.

  1029. Our activity

  1030. says to Him

  1031. that we hate Him

  1032. and His ways.

  1033. And we must

  1034. have somebody

  1035. pay the price

  1036. for that sin

  1037. on our behalf.

  1038. That is the person

  1039. of Jesus Christ.

  1040. All of this

  1041. is also by

  1042. the will

  1043. of God.

  1044. Paul writes

  1045. in Ephesians 2

    Ephesians 2:8

  1046. verses 8 and 9,

  1047. For by grace

  1048. you have been saved

  1049. through faith.

  1050. And this is not

  1051. your own doing.

  1052. It is the gift

  1053. of God,

  1054. not a result

  1055. of works,

  1056. so that no one

  1057. may boast.

  1058. We are saved

  1059. by grace alone,

  1060. through faith alone,

  1061. in Christ alone.

  1062. If you don't know

  1063. that to be true

  1064. of yourself this morning,

  1065. please heed

  1066. the warning.

  1067. You are being

  1068. swept downriver,

  1069. surely to be taken

  1070. over a large waterfall

  1071. that will crush you

  1072. at the bottom

  1073. if you were not

  1074. saved

  1075. saved by Jesus Christ.

  1076. Galatians 6.14,

  1077. Paul says,

  1078. But far be it

  1079. for me to boast

  1080. except in the cross

1081. of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  1082. by which the world

  1083. has been crucified

  1084. to me

  1085. and I

  1086. to the world.

  1087. Paul,

  1088. saved by the will

  1089. of God,

  1090. set apart,

  1091. commissioned as an apostle,

  1092. wrote this book

  1093. to the Colossian believers,

1094. and it has been canonized

1095. now as an inspired work

1096. of the Lord God Almighty

  1097. for us to receive

  1098. in these coming months.

1099. So we have a background,

  1100. a summary,

  1101. and a theme

  1102. for Paul's letter

  1103. to the Colossian believers.

  1104. And we have

  1105. some bearing

  1106. on the salutation.

  1107. I hope that you

  1108. will join me

  1109. with your mind

  1110. and with your heart

  1111. in these coming months

1112. by praying for our study,

  1113. praying for one another

  1114. as we receive

  1115. God's Word to us,

  1116. by attentively listening,

  1117. by being active listeners,

  1118. taking notes,

  1119. really applying your mind

  1120. to the text

  1121. that's before us,

1122. and then taking that truth

  1123. and taking it

  1124. from this place

  1125. and living

  1126. by it

1127. for the glory of God.

  1128. Let's pray together.

  1129. Amen.
