  1. Please join me in turning to Paul's letter to the church at Colossae, the book of your copy of God's Word that we call Colossians.

  2. As we continue together our study last week looking at the first two verses, the salutation, as well as some of the background, the occasion for the writing of this letter.

  3. It's of interesting note, not in any strange supernatural way, but I was listening to that album this morning as I was kind of doing my last note preparation and praying for the preaching this morning.

  4. Evan Thomas way. Very good stuff.

  5. And we continue Colossians chapter 3 and I'll read to you through verse 8.

    Colossians 3 chapter mention

  6. We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you, since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love that you have for all the saints because of the hope laid up for you in heaven.

  7. Of this you have heard before in the word of truth, the gospel, which has come to you as indeed in the whole world it is bearing fruit and growing as it also does among you.

  8. Since the day you heard it and understood the grace of God in truth, just as you learned it from Epaphras, our beloved fellow servant.

  9. He is a faithful minister of Christ on your behalf and is to make known to us your love in the spirit.

  10. As we turn our minds and our hearts toward God's holy writ, let me remind you that this is God's word to us.

  11. It was written for his glory and our good.

  12. We would all do well to listen to it in order to believe its promises and obey its commands.

  13. Now, as Paul begins to write this letter, we know that he's writing it to correct some type of heresy that was going on.

  14. And we talked at length about that last week, not knowing exactly what the heresy was,

  15. but being able to see some elements of some common heresy that was going on in the day.

  16. Paul wastes no time at all getting to the very meat of his letter to the Colossian believers.

  17. And he begins, as he rightly should, with the gospel.

  18. Notice the last half of verse 5.

  19. The word of the truth.

  20. The gospel.

  21. This is the good news of Jesus Christ.

  22. The very foundation from which all other truth is built.

  23. And so we should rightly understand the gospel as well as the outcomes of said good news.

  24. A wonderful historical summary of the gospel is found in 1 Corinthians 15 verses 1 through 4.

    1 Corinthians 15:1–4

  25. Where Paul says,

  26. Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preach to you,

  27. which you received and which you stand, and by which you are being saved,

  28. if you hold fast to the word I preach to you, unless you believed in vain or didn't believe at all.

  29. Verse 3,

  30. For I have delivered to you as of first importance what I also received,

  31. that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures.

  32. That He was buried.

  33. That He was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures.

  34. Which Paul repeats twice, which is to say that God had preordained and planned this thing to come to pass.

  35. That Jesus, the one they called the Christ, was in fact God's Son.

  36. And therefore, the work that was accomplished has veracity.

  37. It has meaning.

  38. It actually took its full effect in the world.

  39. The good news of Jesus Christ is that He came and died for the complete forgiveness of sins.

  40. And then He rose from the dead so that those who believe in Him will live forever.

  41. We cannot have good news without bad.

  42. And the bad news is that all of humanity has inherited the guilt of Adam.

  43. And we are guilty ourselves of living in direct opposition to the ways of God.

  44. Do not take your sin lightly as little and frivolous.

  45. Everything that you have done that has transgressed the law of God has said to Him,

  46. I hate you.

  47. You are my enemy.

  48. I know what's best for me.

  49. I am king.

  50. It is of great offense to a holy God.

  51. God cannot tolerate your sin.

  52. And therefore, you are separated from Him.

  53. And you are cast away from Him forever if you die without the righteousness of Jesus Christ.

  54. Jesus Christ came to save sinners of whom I am foremost.

  55. And He rose from the dead that we may have believed in Him and have life in Him.

  56. The word gospel in Greek, euangelion, from which we get the word evangelize.

  57. It's really just a technical term in Greek for good news.

  58. It was originally used as a term in relationship to battles.

  59. In some records of the past, there would be occasions when a certain city would fight against another city.

  60. It was very common in Greece for the country to be divided up into these city-states.

  61. And each city-state would maintain its own army.

  62. And occasionally they would go to battle.

  63. There would be these great battles.

  64. And everyone in the city would wait to hear the news of what had happened on the battlefield.

  65. The armies would ride out and they would go to battle.

  66. And everyone in the city would wait with this eager anticipation to find out who it was they were going to pay homage to at the end of this battle.

  67. No Twitter. No Instagram. There was no way for this to be updated except by messengers.

  68. And men would be sent back to the city.

  69. Runners would be sent back to the city to declare what had happened.

  70. This was this euangelion, the proclaimers of good news.

  71. This person would come running from the battlefield declaring,

  72. We have won.

  73. This is that word. Gospel.

  74. That we're talking about.

  75. The good news. The good news of victory over our enemy.

  76. The news of victory over sin.

  77. This is the reference Paul makes when he speaks of the gospel preached in Romans 10.15.

  78. When he quotes from Isaiah 52.7, he says,

  79. How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news.

  80. He's saying those runners who come and declare victory over sin.

  81. And to fully appreciate that citation from Romans 10.15, let me read to you Isaiah 52.7.

  82. How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news.

  83. Who publishes peace.

  84. Who brings good news of happiness.

  85. Who publishes salvation.

  86. Who says to Zion,

  87. Your God reigns.

  88. This is the good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  89. And this is the way in which Paul begins his letter to the Colossian believers.

  90. So let's notice together five things about the gospel.

  91. Number one.

  92. The gospel gives reason for thanksgiving.

  93. Verse 3.

  94. Paul writes,

  95. We assume that this is Paul and Timothy as the salutation notes for us.

  96. We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you.

  97. We give proper thanksgiving.

  98. We give thanks to the proper source of who you are in Christ.

  99. If my wife, Samantha, she hates it when I call her that, Sam, but for you guests, I want you to know,

  100. my wife's name is Samantha, gave me a present for my birthday.

  101. It wouldn't be proper for me to thank one of my sons for the gift.

  102. Wouldn't be proper, would it?

  103. Caden, thank you so much for this wonderful gift.

  104. If Sam gave me the gift, it's proper for me to thank Sam for the gift.

  105. However, when one of my sons gives me a gift for my birthday, it's proper, after thanking them, to thank my wife,

  106. who is the real source of said gift.

  107. The one who did all the hard work to actually load up boys and take them to a store and keep them from destroying things.

  108. It's proper for us to ascribe thanksgiving to the proper source, which is what Paul does here.

  109. We always thank God, the Father of our Lord, Jesus Christ, when we pray for you.

  110. God was and is the source of the church.

  111. He was and is the source of the church.

  112. This is further driven in the last half of verse 6 of Colossians 1.

  113. Since the day you heard it, being the gospel, and understood the grace of God in truth.

  114. This gift given to us by God.

  115. The grace of God in truth.

  116. The gospel of Jesus Christ.

  117. Paul writes in Ephesians 2, verses 8 and 9,

    Ephesians 2:8

  118. For by grace you have been saved through faith.

  119. And this is not your own doing.

  120. It is the gift of God.

  121. Not a result of works, so that no one may boast.

  122. And verse 9 is so very important for us to understand what Paul is trying to explain in verse 8.

  123. For by grace you have been saved through faith.

  124. And this is not your own doing.

  125. Many people want to say that Paul is referring to the grace given there.

  126. I would argue that he's referring to the faith.

  127. Because he goes on to say it's not a result of works, so that no one may boast.

  128. It is fully of God.

  129. Our salvation is monergistic.

  130. God himself acts upon us.

  131. You can rearrange these things to say that we're saved by grace through the gift of God,

  132. which is faith, and not as a result of our works.

  133. It's highly debated in churches these days.

  134. By men that I think are worth listening to.

  135. But let me say to you,

  136. that the changing of our hearts happens before we place faith in Jesus Christ.

  137. That regeneration precedes faith in Christ.

  138. That God works in us a new heart so that we can believe.

  139. And then we are justified by that faith.

  140. All of this being a work of grace in our lives.

  141. Regeneration, faith, justification, sanctification, glorification.

  142. Regeneration precedes faith.

  143. Happens in a moment.

  144. I don't really want to parse it all out.

  145. It doesn't really matter.

  146. Right?

  147. But we are incapable.

  148. We cannot do good things.

  149. We cannot be righteous.

  150. And faith would certainly be included in that category unless we are changed.

  151. So it's fully of God.

  152. Regeneration precedes faith.

  153. We must give Him much praise for the salvation of the Colossian church and for our own.

  154. All of the glory.

  155. All of the honor is ascribed to Him.

  156. It all belongs to Him and the praise of His name.

  157. So that's number one.

  158. The Gospel gives reason for thanksgiving.

  159. To the proper place.

  160. To God the Father.

  161. Secondly, the Gospel is believed by faith.

  162. First part of verse 4.

  163. Since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus.

  164. And what Paul is talking about here is a saving faith.

  165. Not just a mental assent to something.

  166. Not just believing and saying with your mind,

  167. Yeah, that makes sense.

  168. Jesus is the Son of God and came and died for our sins.

  169. But a saving faith.

  170. A faith that is preceded by regeneration.

  171. A faith that has as its object the person and work of Jesus Christ.

  172. There are many people of faith these days.

  173. Saving faith is faith that has as its object the person and work of Jesus Christ.

  174. Charles Spurgeon tells a story about two men in a boat who are being swept towards a waterfall

  175. and their certain death.

  176. And at the same time, one is thrown a rope from shore by a group of men working to save him.

  177. And the other sees a log floating by.

  178. And one jumps onto the log.

  179. The other takes hold of the rope.

  180. And the point of the story is that the object must be the correct object in order to save us.

  181. The man jumping onto the log did himself no service.

  182. He just got really wet before he went over the waterfall.

  183. The man who held the rope was saved because the object was right and it was proper.

  184. Charles Spurgeon again, and I'm going to throw a little addition to this quote in for you for free

  185. because it's very good.

  186. He said,

  187. So an encouragement to you to read Puritans, the old dead guys.

  188. As of them, he says, the old writers tell you, right?

  189. So the Puritans say that faith is made up of three things.

  190. First, knowledge.

  191. Then, assent.

  192. And then what they call affiance or the laying hold of the knowledge to which we give assent

  193. and making it our own by trusting in it.

  194. So first, we must know something.

  195. The gospel must be preached to us.

  196. We must understand the state of our sin, separation from God, the need of a Savior.

  197. We must understand that Jesus Christ is that Savior.

  198. We must have some knowledge of double imputation.

  199. That He takes away our sin and that He gives to us His righteousness.

  200. That that is what is required before God.

  201. We must have some knowledge of that.

  202. And then we must have some belief that it's true.

  203. But more than that, we must trust in it.

  204. We must take it up into ourselves.

  205. We must say, this is a truth that belongs to me.

  206. That I am saved by this great truth.

  207. So knowledge and belief and trust.

  208. How do you know if you have a saving faith?

  209. This is a question that we must ask as American Christians, particularly those who live and likely grew up in the Southeast.

  210. Because we live in a place where so many, and I will use my quote unquote fingers, Christian leaders peddle cheap grace.

  211. They would have you many places this morning.

  212. And this is tragic and saddening.

  213. Many places this morning, they would say to somebody, if you doubt that you were a Christian,

  214. let me draw your mind back to the day in which you made a decision.

  215. The day in which you walked an aisle.

  216. Remember the card you filled out.

  217. Flip to the front of your copy of God's Word.

  218. Remember where you wrote down the date.

  219. Some activity on your part that saved you from the wrath to come.

  220. And certainly, many people have been saved by such activity.

  221. There was, I shouldn't say by activity.

  222. They were saved in the midst of such activity.

  223. That God worked in that and used it to save them.

  224. But it is not the surety of your salvation.

  225. You've heard me say before, the fact that you have a birth date and you know the date

  226. does not prove to you that you're alive.

  227. You know that you're alive because you experience life.

  228. You know that you're alive and breathing and that you're working out activity.

  229. And the same is true of the Christian.

  230. Our work must reflect the fact that we are saved.

  231. Our work does not earn us salvation.

  232. We're not found righteous because of the things that we do,

  233. but we will live in righteousness because of who we are.

  234. It's a great monergistic work of God on our behalf.

  235. Now our sanctification, the continuing perfection of us being synergistic,

  236. we have a part to play in it.

  237. An activity to be carried out.

  238. The great marker of Christian maturity is obedience.

  239. I know people who have been Christians for decades

  240. who don't show the maturity that some young believers do

  241. because those young believers are obedient with what they know.

  242. So many of us are so top heavy.

  243. We know so much and do so little with it.

  244. The great marker of Christian maturity is obedience.

  245. However, obedience is the marker of any truly regenerative individual's life.

  246. And there are some who call this lordship theology,

  247. although those who believe this to be true would never call it that,

  248. and they condemn it as heresy.

  249. They think it is a works-based theology.

  250. And beloved, hear me.

  251. I never want to cast into doubt your salvation unless it's necessary that I do so.

  252. I don't want you to come in here every Sunday and wonder leaving.

  253. Am I truly saved?

  254. Is my life progressing in holiness the way it ought to be?

  255. I just don't know.

  256. I want you to have surety.

  257. I want you to hold tight to it.

  258. I want you to join with me even though I still sin,

  259. to be able to stand up under the condemnation,

  260. knowing that there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ.

  261. I want you to experience the seal of the Spirit on your life,

  262. where you can with confidence go before God,

  263. knowing that you are clothed in Christ's righteousness.

  264. But I also do not want you to be led astray.

  265. I tend to be a half-glass-empty kind of guy,

  266. and I really don't like that about myself,

  267. and I try not to be.

  268. I don't want to believe what I'm about to say,

  269. but I think that most of the people sitting in churches in the southeast this morning

  270. think they're Christians,

  271. and they are not.

  272. I think that they are tares,

  273. and they're going to be weeded out and thrown into the fire one day

  274. because of this cheap grace idea

  275. that simply there's some assent given,

  276. some word spoken,

  277. and now you're a Christian.

  278. Rather than seeing that our lives must be progressing in holiness

  279. to see that we're saved.

  280. Test yourself.

  281. Examine to make sure you're in the faith.

  282. 1 John 5, 1-3.

  283. John says,

  284. Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God,

  285. and everyone who loves the Father loves whoever has been born of Him.

  286. Okay, so conveniently, many people stop there.

  287. Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God.

  288. But let me tell you that the belief is not simply some mental cognition to the facts,

  289. but rather a belief that changes who you are.

  290. It's that kind of belief.

  291. It's a trusted belief.

  292. It's a thing that so defines who you are that you live differently.

  293. The last half of that verse 1 says,

  294. And everyone who loves the Father loves whoever has been born of Him.

  295. Verse 2,

  296. By this we know that we love the children of God,

  297. when we love God and obey His commandments.

  298. For this is the love of God,

  299. that we keep His commandments,

  300. and His commandments are not burdensome.

  301. This is the proof of what we have said has happened in our lives,

  302. that we begin to live as we should.

  303. Not perfectly.

  304. Don't hear me saying that.

  305. I still am in need of grace.

  306. Praise God,

  307. I can trust in the completed work of Jesus Christ on my behalf.

  308. W.E. Vine, in his book,

  309. The Expositional Dictionary of New Testament Words,

  310. wrote,

  311. There is no evidence in your life

  312. that you have a saving faith.

  313. Let me plead with you this morning to repent and believe.

  314. Put down your pride.

  315. I do not care how long you've said you're a Christian

  316. and you're suddenly realizing that you're not.

  317. Repent and believe.

  318. Your eternal soul is at stake here.

  319. Do not let the cheap grace peddlers lead you astray.

  320. The Gospel comes by faith,

  321. by saving faith.

  322. Thirdly,

  323. we see this in the first part of verse 5,

  324. the Gospel gives hope

  325. because of the promise of heaven.

  326. The text reads,

  327. Because of the hope laid up for you in heaven.

  328. The hope of heaven causes us to live for the eternal

  329. and not to be caught up in the trivial nature of the temporal.

  330. Just in case you're trying to write that down,

  331. I'll say it one more time.

  332. The hope of heaven causes us to live for the eternal

  333. and to not be caught up in the trivial nature of the temporal.

  334. It fuels the daily dying that is necessary to follow our risen Lord.

  335. Remember Mark chapter 8,

    Mark 8 chapter mention

  336. as we just finished studying through Mark.

  337. If we want to be a disciple of Jesus Christ,

  338. we're going to have to take up our cross and follow Him.

  339. We're going to have to die to the things that we want,

  340. our self-direction,

  341. in order to follow Him.

  342. And the hope of heaven is the great charge we need for that.

  343. That we know that one day we will eternally live with Him forever.

  344. We're living for the eternal, not for the temporal.

  345. There's a great example of that in Hebrews chapter 11.

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  346. I invite you to turn there with me to verse 24.

  347. Hebrews 11 verse 24.

    Hebrews 11:24

  348. Okay, I'm going to rock.

  349. You'll get there.

  350. Ready?

  351. Verse 24.

  352. By faith, Moses, when he was grown up,

  353. refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter.

  354. You remember the story Moses put into a basket,

  355. found by Pharaoh's daughter,

  356. adopted as a son.

  357. Verse 25.

  358. Choosing rather to be mistreated with the people of God

  359. than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin.

  360. The writer of Hebrews giving his commentary

  361. on what's going on with Moses.

  362. Instead, going and being part of the Jewish people

  363. rather than living in the highest place of luxury,

  364. having everything that his flesh could have possibly desired.

  365. The commentary of the writer of Hebrews says

  366. the fleeting pleasures of sin.

  367. Certainly pleasurable, but passing.

  368. Verse 26.

  369. He considered, and I love this,

  370. he considered the reproach of Christ.

  371. The reproach of Christ.

  372. Not that he knew who Jesus was,

  373. but this writer of Hebrews sees that

  374. all of the suffering of all God's people

  375. was part of the world's condemnation

  376. and rejection of the Savior.

  377. He considered the reproach of Christ

  378. greater wealth than the treasures of Egypt,

  379. for he was looking to the reward.

  380. The eternal reward.

  381. Not to the temporal, but to the eternal.

  382. Verse 27.

  383. By faith he left Egypt,

  384. not being afraid of the anger of the king,

  385. for he endured as seeing him who is invisible.

  386. Rather than worshiping the king of Egypt,

  387. Pharaoh, he worshiped God.

  388. God.

  389. Jim Elliot is cited in Elizabeth Elliot's

  390. shadow of the Almighty as saying,

  391. he is no fool who gives what he cannot keep

  392. to gain what he cannot lose.

  393. Beloved, so many of us

  394. who claim the name of Christ

  395. live for the temporal.

  396. We get so wrapped up into the day-to-day

  397. fleeting pleasure of sin.

  398. The Gospel gives us hope

  399. because of the promise of heaven.

  400. It changes the way in which we live.

  401. Fourthly, last part of verse 4,

  402. the Gospel produces love.

  403. The Gospel produces love.

  404. The text reads,

  405. the love that you have for all the saints

  406. is one of the things that Paul is thanking God for.

  407. Why is he thanking God for it?

  408. Because it's a supernatural love.

  409. Notice verse 8.

  410. That Epaphras has made known to us

  411. your love in the Spirit.

  412. One of the fruits of the Spirit being love

  413. has been produced in them

  414. because of the work of God

  415. on their behalf.

  416. And we see here in our text today

  417. the triad of Christian virtues.

  418. Faith, hope, and love.

  419. 1 Corinthians 13.

  420. So now, faith, hope, and love

  421. abide these three,

  422. but at the greatest of these

  423. is love.

  424. You see that also in 1 Thessalonians 1.3

  425. and 1 Thessalonians 5.8.

  426. The great virtue of Christian love.

  427. Let me connect for you

  428. that Christian love

  429. produces Christian unity.

  430. They're thanking God

  431. for the love that they have

  432. for one another.

  433. This week,

  434. if you're part of a community outreach group,

  435. you studied the beginning

  436. of Philippians 2.

  437. You draw your attention

  438. to verses 2 and 3.

  439. Paul says,

  440. Complete my joy

  441. by being of the same mind,

  442. having the same love,

  443. being in full accord

  444. and of one mind.

  445. Do nothing from selfish ambition

  446. or conceit,

  447. but in humility,

  448. count others

  449. more significant than yourselves.

  450. This is the definition of love.

  451. That you seek the good of others

  452. before your own good.

  453. John 17.

  454. I'll get you to turn there with me.

  455. John 17.

  456. I'll begin reading in verse 20.

  457. This is part of

  458. Jesus' prayer

  459. that has become known

  460. as the High Priestly Prayer.

  461. I want you to note

  462. four verses of it.

  463. John 17,

    John 17:20–23

  464. verses 20-23.

  465. And he prays,

  466. I do not ask for these only,

  467. he's talking about the apostles,

  468. but also for those

  469. who will believe in me

  470. through their word.

  471. Now, us.

  472. This is his prayer

  473. for all of us.

  474. Those of us who claim

  475. to follow Christ.

  476. Verse 21,

  477. that they may all be one.

  478. Just as you,

  479. Father,

  480. are in me

  481. and I in you,

  482. they also may be in us.

  483. So that the world may believe

  484. that you have sent me.

  485. The glory that you have given me,

  486. I have given to them.

  487. That they may be one

  488. even as we are one.

  489. I in them

  490. and you in me.

  491. That they may become

  492. perfectly one.

  493. So that the world may know

  494. that you sent me

  495. and love them

  496. even as you loved me.

  497. Notice the repetition

  498. that's going on there.

  499. Verse 21,

  500. that they may be one.

  501. Verse 22,

  502. they may be one.

  503. Verse 23,

  504. that they may become

  505. perfectly one.

  506. Jesus prays that we

  507. will be unified.

  508. Why?

  509. So that the world will know

  510. that Jesus is the Christ

  511. and that we are loved

  512. by God

  513. through Him.

  514. Note again,

  515. the repetition.

  516. Verse 21,

  517. so that the world may believe

  518. that you have sent me.

  519. In verse 23,

  520. so that the world may know

  521. that you sent me

  522. and love them

  523. even as you loved me.

  524. It's meant to be a display

  525. of the way in which

  526. God loves us

  527. by the way we love

  528. one another.

  529. Jesus said in John 13, 35,

  530. by this,

  531. all people will know

  532. that you are my disciples

  533. if you have love

  534. for one another.

  535. This is the way

  536. that the world is supposed

  537. to look at us

  538. and say,

  539. what a peculiar people

  540. set apart for God.

  541. Look at the way

  542. they love each other.

  543. Not by signs

  544. or big fancy buildings

  545. or programs

  546. or kitschy t-shirts

  547. or cool websites.

  548. Neat Facebook posts.

  549. By our love

  550. for one another.

  551. This is the defining

  552. characteristic

  553. of Christians together

  554. and how the world

  555. looks at us

  556. and knows we belong

  557. to God.

  558. John writes

  559. in 1 John 4, 7 and 8,

  560. Beloved,

  561. let us love one another

  562. for love is from God

  563. and whoever loves

  564. has been born of God

  565. and knows God.

  566. Anyone who does not love

  567. does not know God

  568. because God is love.

  569. How do we love one another?

  570. Paul writes in Galatians 6, 2,

  571. bear one another's burdens

  572. and so fulfill

  573. the law of Christ.

  574. He's talking about

  575. this commandment

  576. that Jesus has given

  577. that we should love

  578. one another.

  579. That we bear

  580. one another's burdens.

  581. And beloved,

  582. I will tell you

  583. that in most churches,

  584. including our own,

  585. there are many,

  586. many people

  587. who work

  588. to bear the burdens

  589. of others.

  590. But that number

  591. is far too few.

  592. And those people

  593. are so very burdened

  594. by everybody else's burdens.

  595. That they often flame out

  596. very quick.

  597. They get consumed.

  598. They have to take

  599. massive breaks

  600. in order to be replenished

  601. so that they can get back

  602. and bear burdens

  603. once again.

  604. There are single individuals

  605. bearing the burdens

  606. of many.

  607. But the beautiful picture

  608. is that if we're all

  609. bearing one another's burdens,

  610. the load gets incredibly light.

  611. That we pick up the pieces

  612. of one another

  613. and function as a body together

  614. that way.

  615. That means

  616. that you have

  617. a part to play.

  618. Whether you're part

  619. of this church

  620. or another

  621. and you're just a guest

  622. here today.

  623. That you have a part

  624. to play.

  625. You have a ministry

  626. in the church.

  627. The church growth gurus

  628. say that it's incredibly

  629. important to plug someone in

  630. to give them a job

  631. within the first six months

  632. of them coming

  633. to a church.

  634. Right?

  635. You can't know

  636. somebody's character

  637. in six months.

  638. That's insanity.

  639. But this is what

  640. so many are doing

  641. so that people feel

  642. that they belong

  643. rather than saying to them

  644. you have a ministry.

  645. You have a ministry.

  646. It's to one another.

  647. This means that it's not okay

  648. just to show up

  649. on a Sunday morning.

  650. You can't just walk in

  651. at 1025,

  652. 1035,

  653. sit down

  654. and when we're done

  655. get up and walk

  656. right back out.

  657. I know

  658. that sometimes

  659. that's what has to happen

  660. on a Sunday.

  661. I know the amount

  662. of time it takes

  663. to invest

  664. in people

  665. and to get to know people

  666. you have to do the work.

  667. You have to.

  668. You have to find times

  669. and opportunities

  670. to get with

  671. the people of God

  672. so that you can

  673. display

  674. love.

  675. It's of vital importance

  676. in your service

  677. to the church

  678. and I guarantee you

  679. that as you do so

  680. your burdens

  681. will be bore

  682. as well.

  683. You will also be

  684. loved.

  685. It's a work.

  686. It is hard.

  687. It has been so many years

  688. since I ever went

  689. and fellowshiped

  690. with a new group

  691. of people.

  692. I can remember

  693. faintly,

  694. it's a dim light

  695. in my mind

  696. how strange

  697. and awkward it is

  698. to walk into a group

  699. of people

  700. that you don't know.

  701. I know it's hard.

  702. I know it's hard.

  703. Do the work.

  704. Put in the time.

  705. Show up to the things

  706. that we're doing.

  707. We have meetings

  708. that are almost exclusively

  709. for the opportunity

  710. to be able to love

  711. each other

  712. in this way.

  713. So what are some

  714. practical ways

  715. you can bear

  716. another's burdens?

  717. Just a few

  718. that popped in my mind.

  719. Help a brother move.

  720. Moving out

  721. at the end of the semester.

  722. Pick up a couple of boxes.

  723. Be available for a sister

  724. at any hour of the night

  725. or stay up late

  726. in prayer

  727. for someone.

  728. Show up to help

  729. with a project

  730. on the property

  731. here.

  732. minister alongside

  733. someone.

  734. Service that somebody

  735. is doing in the community.

  736. Join them in that work.

  737. Partner with them in it.

  738. Give up your

  739. free time

  740. for the sake

  741. of the kingdom.

  742. College students,

  743. let me speak directly

  744. to you for a moment.

  745. I know that you feel

  746. busy.

  747. That's a real feeling

  748. that you're having.

  749. I don't want to totally

  750. negate the feeling

  751. that you're having.

  752. I know.

  753. It is finals week.

  754. This is maybe

  755. the only week

  756. you really have an excuse.

  757. I know that the burden

  758. of it is laid

  759. on your shoulders

  760. and you feel so busy.

  761. Start getting into

  762. healthy church habits

  763. now.

  764. Serving others.

  765. Giving of your time

  766. because you only

  767. get busier.

  768. I don't really

  769. even know

  770. the word

  771. free time.

  772. Like what

  773. what is this thing

  774. free time?

  775. Invest in the kingdom.

  776. Invest in eternal things.

  777. And listen,

  778. I'm not saying

  779. that you can't

  780. have hobbies

  781. and that it's not

  782. good and healthy

  783. to unplug

  784. from things sometimes

  785. and just have

  786. some fun.

  787. Sam and I

  788. are taking a vacation

  789. this summer.

  790. We're planning

  791. on taking the boys

  792. on our first

  793. canoe camping trip.

  794. This is a good thing.

  795. Good for our family

  796. to be together.

  797. Good for me

  798. to be far,

  799. far away

  800. from a cell phone

  801. signal.

  802. This has value.

  803. But I can tell you

  804. this,

  805. that at the end

  806. of my life

  807. I'm not going

  808. to look back

  809. on my life

  810. and wish

  811. that I had

  812. done more

  813. whitewater paddling

  814. or rock climbing

  815. or played more

  816. golf.

  817. I would never

  818. do that.

  819. Or played more

  820. video games.

  821. I think that most

  822. of us are going

  823. to look back

  824. on our lives

  825. and say,

  826. look at the time

  827. that I wasted.

  828. I flittered it away

  829. on nothing

  830. rather than investing

  831. in my future.

  832. You have so much

  833. that you can give

  834. to one another.

  835. How can you know

  836. someone's burdens?

  837. Ask.

  838. Everybody's hurting

  839. in some way

  840. at some time.

  841. Ask.

  842. And be willing

  843. to hear the answer.

  844. Ask somebody

  845. how they're doing

  846. and actually mean it.

  847. When somebody says,

  848. I'm not doing that well,

  849. say,

  850. tell me about it.

  851. I wasn't just being cordial.

  852. I really want to know.

  853. How are you doing?

  854. And how can I help

  855. you bear up

  856. when things aren't going

  857. that well

  858. in your life?

  859. This all means

  860. that relationships

  861. in the church matter.

  862. That the church

  863. was meant to be relational.

  864. It's about people

  865. and not programs.

  866. Programs don't matter

  867. at all

  868. if they're not helping

  869. people be drawn together

  870. in love

  871. for one another.

  872. They're pointless.

  873. The relationships

  874. matter.

  875. We do community

  876. outreach groups

  877. as a way to develop

  878. and to build

  879. those things.

  880. I've been visiting

  881. around those groups

  882. and I will tell you

  883. there are so many

  884. good, healthy things

  885. happening

  886. in what we're calling

  887. our COGS.

  888. Fantastic things

  889. that are happening

  890. but there's so much

  891. more even still.

  892. In so many ways still

  893. they're program

  894. and not people driven.

  895. We need to be bonded

  896. together.

  897. We need to be,

  898. as I love Kyle Webb

  899. says so often,

  900. a faith family.

  901. Connected that way

  902. because we're connected

  903. by the blood

  904. of Jesus Christ.

  905. The world should see

  906. the gospel

  907. in the way

  908. that we love each other.

  909. If we have a hope

  910. that produces love

  911. then people should see it

  912. and they should want

  913. to understand it.

  914. Peter exhorts

  915. in 1 Peter 3.15

  916. to always be prepared

  917. to make a defense

  918. to anyone who asks you

  919. for a reason

  920. for the hope

  921. that is in you.

  922. His suggestion here

  923. is that if you are living

  924. as believers ought to live,

  925. people are going to ask you

  926. about the hope

  927. that you have.

  928. What is this thing

  929. that has made you

  930. so different

  931. and changed you?

  932. And he's suggesting

  933. that you have an answer

  934. for that.

  935. That you be ready

  936. to give an answer

  937. to such a question.

  938. How many of us

  939. are being asked

  940. that question?

  941. Many of us struggle

  942. in evangelism

  943. because we are peddling

  944. a product

  945. that really hasn't worked

  946. for us.

  947. There's not all

  948. that much different

  949. about who we are.

  950. There's a chance

  951. there's nothing different

  952. about who you are.

  953. We need to throw ourselves

  954. into Christian love

  955. for one another.

  956. This will overflow

  957. in our evangelistic efforts.

  958. Look,

  959. briefly,

  960. I'm going to read this

  961. to you fast.

  962. The early church,

  963. Acts 2,

  964. 42-47,

  965. and they devoted themselves

  966. to the apostles' teaching

  967. and the fellowship,

  968. to the breaking of bread

  969. and the prayers,

  970. and awe came upon every soul

  971. and many wonders

  972. and signs were being done

  973. through the apostles.

  974. And all who believed

  975. were together

  976. and had all things in common.

  977. And they were selling

  978. their possessions

  979. and belongings

  980. and distributing the proceeds

  981. to all as any had need.

  982. And day by day,

  983. attending the temple together

  984. and breaking bread

  985. in their homes,

  986. they received their food

  987. with glad and generous hearts,

  988. praising God

  989. and having favor

  990. with all the people.

  991. Here they are doing

  992. all this activity together.

  993. This is early church.

  994. Everything they're doing

  995. is about being together

  996. and doing things together.

  997. Right?

  998. Loving each other

  999. the way believers

1000. ought to love each other.

1001. And then it's finished off.

  1002. Verse 47,

1003. the Lord added to their number

  1004. day by day

1005. those who were being saved.

1006. It was being put on display

1007. so that people were attracted to it

  1008. or repelled by it.

  1009. That'll happen as well.

  1010. But many, many

  1011. were attracted to it.

  1012. If you're not living

  1013. in a relationship

  1014. with the church,

  1015. begin.

  1016. Repent.

  1017. Believe.

  1018. It's time to start.

  1019. If you are,

  1020. just keep it up.

1021. Keep plugging away at it.

  1022. I know that it's not easy.

  1023. The toughest thing

  1024. about Christianity

  1025. are Christians.

  1026. We're people.

  1027. We're a mess.

  1028. Right?

1029. In great need of grace.

  1030. Even though we've been

  1031. delivered from sin,

  1032. our flesh still exists.

  1033. There's a battle going on

  1034. within all of us.

  1035. Praise God

  1036. that the victory

  1037. has been completed

  1038. and the good news

  1039. has conquered.

  1040. We need one another

  1041. to work out

  1042. our sanctification.

1043. So that was number four.

  1044. Number five.

  1045. I'm almost done.

  1046. Number five.

1047. Notice in the first part

  1048. of verse six.

  1049. The gospel has

  1050. and is

  1051. completing its task.

  1052. Paul says,

  1053. this gospel truth

1054. which has come to you

1055. as indeed in the whole world

  1056. it is bearing fruit

  1057. and increasing.

  1058. Paul is referring to

  1059. the known world,

  1060. the beyond,

  1061. the Jewish population,

  1062. the whole world

1063. is what he's referring to

  1064. here.

  1065. It's bearing fruit.

  1066. It's increasing.

  1067. It's doing the thing

  1068. that it's set out

  1069. to accomplish.

  1070. God is ultimately

  1071. the source

  1072. of the power

  1073. in the gospel.

  1074. And he is accomplishing

  1075. his will

  1076. and his purpose.

  1077. Jesus says in Matthew 16, 18,

1078. I will build my church

1079. and the gates of hell

1080. shall not prevail against it.

  1081. The gospel makes advance

  1082. in the world.

1083. We don't hold back hell.

  1084. Hell shudders

1085. in front of the gospel.

1086. The gospel is going to overwhelm

  1087. and knock down

  1088. hell

  1089. and its dominion.

1090. I will build my church

1091. and the gates of hell

1092. shall not prevail against it.

1093. The gospel has and is

  1094. completing its task.

1095. But the gospel has and is

  1096. completing its task

  1097. through the work

  1098. of faithful ministers.

  1099. God uses us

  1100. as his means

  1101. to accomplish

  1102. his ends.

  1103. Verse 7 and 8.

1104. Just as you learned it

  1105. from Epaphras,

  1106. our beloved fellow servant.

1107. He is a faithful minister

  1108. of Christ

  1109. on your behalf

1110. and has made known to us

  1111. your love

  1112. in the Spirit.

1113. The gospel has and is

  1114. completing its task

  1115. through the work

  1116. of faithful ministers.

1117. If you were here last week,

  1118. you've heard this.

  1119. If you weren't,

  1120. Paul did not begin

  1121. the church in Colossae.

  1122. It was started by

  1123. a man named Epaphras

  1124. who likely had traveled

  1125. to Ephesus

1126. some 120 miles to the west,

  1127. had heard the gospel,

  1128. became a believer,

  1129. and as a disciple

  1130. of Jesus Christ should,

  1131. he went back

  1132. and began to preach

  1133. the gospel

  1134. and establish disciples

1135. which led to a church,

  1136. a gathering of God's people.

  1137. people.

  1138. Earlier I referenced

  1139. the words of Paul

  1140. in Romans 15

  1141. where he says,

  1142. citing Isaiah 52.7,

1143. how beautiful are the feet

  1144. of those who preach

  1145. the good news.

  1146. Just before this,

1147. he writes in Romans 10.14

1148. and the beginning of verse 15,

1149. hear the rest of that.

1150. How then will they call on Him

1151. in whom they have not believed?

1152. And how are they to believe

  1153. in Him of whom

  1154. they have never heard?

1155. And how are they to hear

  1156. without someone preaching?

1157. And how are they to preach

  1158. unless they are sent?

  1159. And then he says,

1160. how beautiful are the feet

  1161. of those who preach

  1162. the good news.

  1163. There's a real practicality

1164. to the way in which

1165. people come to saving faith

  1166. in Jesus Christ.

  1167. They must hear

1168. the gospel of Jesus Christ

  1169. preached.

  1170. There are stories

1171. all over the world right now

  1172. about people having visions

1173. of Jesus and coming to faith

  1174. in Jesus Christ.

  1175. Don't believe it for a minute.

1176. Maybe some of those things

  1177. are happening

  1178. and leading those individuals

  1179. to ask questions

1180. of those who can preach

  1181. the gospel to them.

1182. But the way that the gospel

  1183. of Jesus Christ

  1184. comes to the minds

  1185. and hearts of individuals

  1186. is through the preaching

  1187. of His Word.

1188. God is raising up an army

  1189. for that very purpose.

1190. Beloved, that is the purpose

  1191. of our church

  1192. and the purpose

1193. of every individual in it.

  1194. The primary way

1195. in which we glorify God

  1196. is by the making

  1197. of disciples.

  1198. This includes so much

  1199. about our Christian living.

1200. But this is the drive

  1201. and the point.

  1202. Believers in Jesus Christ

  1203. bring about,

  1204. work toward,

  1205. strive for faith

  1206. in other people.

  1207. Ultimately and finally,

1208. this is all a work of God.

  1209. While we recognize,

1210. along with Paul and Timothy,

1211. that God was the ultimate source

  1212. of the Colossian church,

  1213. we must also recognize

  1214. that He graciously involved

  1215. Epaphras in that process.

1216. Not because God is somehow

  1217. incapable apart from us.

  1218. That God can't accomplish

  1219. exactly what God

  1220. sets out to accomplish.

1221. He did not need Epaphras,

  1222. but He loved him.

1223. And because He loved him,

  1224. He included him

  1225. in the great work

  1226. of the gospel advancement

  1227. in the world.

1228. The same is true of us.

  1229. He doesn't need you,

  1230. but He wants you.

1231. He wants to bless you

  1232. by involving you

  1233. in His kingdom advancement.

  1234. We get to experience

  1235. who God is

1236. as we go about the work

  1237. of making disciples.

1238. You want to know why

1239. many of you are not growing

  1240. in your faith?

  1241. It's because you're not

  1242. actively working out

  1243. the things God

1244. has told you to do.

1245. You're not actually seeing Him.

  1246. You're not beholding Him

1247. as He works in the world.

  1248. I would strongly suggest

  1249. that you do so.

  1250. It will bless you

  1251. beyond measure

  1252. to see that God

  1253. changes people.

  1254. It will encourage you

  1255. that He can still

  1256. change you.

  1257. You sometimes feel

  1258. trapped in your sin.

  1259. It could be because

  1260. you're not seeing God

1261. as work in other individuals.

1262. Paul later in his letter

  1263. to the Colossians

1264. speaks of making the gospel

1265. fully known to the Gentiles.

  1266. And then he says

  1267. in chapter 1, verse 29,

  1268. For this I toil.

  1269. For this I labor.

  1270. I work hard.

  1271. Struggling with all

  1272. His energy

  1273. that He powerfully

  1274. works within me.

  1275. The great promise

  1276. of Matthew 28, 18-20

  1277. which is known

  1278. as the Great Commission.

1279. Jesus came and said to them,

  1280. All authority in heaven

  1281. and on earth

1282. has been given to Me.

  1283. Go therefore

  1284. and make disciples

  1285. of all nations,

  1286. baptizing them

1287. in the name of the Father

  1288. and of the Son

1289. and of the Holy Spirit,

  1290. teaching them to observe

1291. all that I have commanded you.

  1292. And behold,

1293. I am with you always

1294. to the end of the age.

  1295. Note

  1296. that the command

  1297. to make disciples

  1298. is incapped

1299. by a statement of power

  1300. and by a promise.

  1301. Jesus says,

  1302. All authority

  1303. that doesn't exclude anything.

  1304. All authority

1305. in heaven and on earth

1306. has been given to Me.

  1307. I have a people

  1308. that I have redeemed

  1309. for myself.

  1310. My completed work

  1311. on the cross

  1312. has been accomplished.

  1313. There is a people

  1314. that I am seeking

  1315. in the world.

  1316. So,

  1317. go find them.

  1318. I have all authority.

1319. It's all been given to me.

1320. All dominion belongs to me.

  1321. And there's a purpose

1322. I'm going to work out

  1323. in the life

  1324. of your church

  1325. and in you

  1326. as an individual.

  1327. So go

  1328. and make disciples.

  1329. and in the promise

1330. that He will be with us

1331. to the end of the age.

  1332. Beloved,

  1333. we have nothing

  1334. to fear

  1335. in advancing

  1336. the good news

  1337. of the Gospel

  1338. of Jesus Christ.

1339. As God is for us,

  1340. who can be

  1341. against us?

  1342. And so,

  1343. in summary,

  1344. I just remind you

  1345. once again,

  1346. the Gospel gives

  1347. reason for thanksgiving.

  1348. The Gospel is believed

  1349. by saving faith.

  1350. The Gospel gives hope

  1351. because of the promise

  1352. of heaven.

  1353. The Gospel produces love.

  1354. And the Gospel has

1355. and is completing its task

  1356. through the work

  1357. of faithful ministers.

  1358. Let's pray together.
