  1. Please take your copy of God's Word, turn to Paul's letter to the Colossians, chapter 1.

    Colossians 1 chapter mention

  2. I've looked around the room a bit this morning and just been with the children down front.

  3. ! I think we have some guests with kids that have been here with us before, so this is not a massive surprise.

  4. But just for the sake of everybody, I wanted to remind us in brief why we like to have the children

  5. in the service with us. And I'm going to do so by reading from that opening paragraph on the bulletin,

  6. which is there every single Sunday. And maybe you're tired of it, but I would encourage you to

  7. not be and maybe even read it every single Sunday. About halfway down, it says we place high value on

  8. the health of families and our corporate meetings are multi-generational in that children remain

  9. together with families in the meetings to allow and encourage families to function and grow together.

  10. There's a great deal of value in children getting to see what's important to their parents,

  11. to sit and learn to be church people. We believe that each Christian, young and old,

  12. has a distinct role in promoting the spiritual maturity of others. And on that note, just to say

  13. to you parents, I know it adds some stress. I've been there sitting with the young ones,

  14. thumping them on the head, not hearing a lot of what's going on.

  15. But let me just encourage you to not be stressed. It's good for people. It's good for us to love kids

  16. and to not be so easily distracted, to sit and focus our attention on what really matters.

  17. Beloved, if you're engaging your mind in what we're doing together, little outcries from the

  18. kids should not be a problem. I preach. I preach through a lot of that kind of stuff. And to be frank,

  19. I don't even hear it sometimes. Sometimes Sam will say, boy, the kids were rough today. And I go,

  20. really? I didn't even hear that. Let it be part of our normal gathering together, that we're a faith

  21. family and that our family includes little ones, right? This is precious to me right now, okay?

  22. If it gets hard for you, we do have some practical helps, a space across the hall where we're piping

  23. video and sound over there. We have a nursing room. It's that door. You'll see it in the hallway with the

  24. opaque window in it. And there's a key in that little drawer as you go out the door that gets

  25. you in there if you'd like some privacy to nurse. But just please don't be stressed about it because

  26. we certainly are not. Our text for this morning is Colossians 1 verses 9 through 14. Please follow

    Colossians 1:9–14

  27. along as I read.

  28. thanks to the Father who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light.

  29. He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved

  30. Son in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. This is God's word to us. It was written

  31. for his glory and our good. We would all do well to listen to it in order to believe its promises

  32. and obey its commands. Now this morning I'd like to invite you to make four observations with me from

  33. this morning's text. And this is a quite a big bite to chew off here. I really probably

  34. this text I could see the the clear potential for four sermons coming out of it. I will tell you that

  35. my notes are quite a bit longer than they typically are so I'm going to try to move quite a bit faster

  36. than I do. Let me encourage you to be an active listener this morning. I think it's very very

  37. difficult to listen if you're not taking notes. A pen in hand certainly helps. So let me encourage you

  38. to try to stay engaged with me. If you're like me you like to read the old dead guys. They typically

  39. have so much more to say in their books particularly the Puritan writers and they like to make lists

  40. within lists within lists and it's incredibly easy to get lost on where you even are. You're on like

  41. Roman numeral number seven underneath subheading number two for the main point they're trying to

  42. make and you have to back back up and do that and I'm going to do that to you a bit this morning. So

  43. four observations from this text is the main thing but I also have three lists within the major list

  44. so notes may help you this morning. Be warned. Four observations. Observation number one.

  45. Paul and Timothy's example of intercession. Paul and Timothy's example of intercession. Notice this.

  46. Look at it. Observe it with me together. And so from the day we heard. Heard what? It is made known to us

  47. your love in the Spirit. Verse 8. Epaphras has come to them and said these people love one another

  48. in the Spirit. So from this day we have not ceased to pray for you. This is intercessory prayer. We're

  49. noting Paul and Timothy's example of intercession. Intercessory prayer simply put is the act of praying

  50. on behalf of others. It's the act of praying on behalf of others and it is a bold act of love. To go before

  51. the Father on behalf of someone else is a great great expression of love for them. James 5 16. James exhorts us

  52. to confess our sins to one another and pray for one another intercede for one another that you may be

  53. be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working. Now we are found,

  54. if we are in Christ, we are found as righteous in Him. We have the ability, we have the capacity to

  55. approach the throne because our sins have been forgiven in Christ and we have been given, we have

  56. been, it has been imputed to us His righteousness. As we're saying, in the beloved, right? When God looks at

  57. us, He sees Jesus Christ and the prayers of the intercessor are based in the redemption of Christ

  58. as He is our intercessor and the great example on our behalf of intercession. Romans 8 33 and 34,

  59. Paul writes, who shall bring any charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies, who is to condemn.

  60. Christ Jesus is the one who died more than that, who was raised, who's at the right hand of God,

  61. who indeed is interceding for us. He sits at the right hand of the Father and He says, when I come to God,

  62. this is Nathan. I died for him. I paid the penalty for his sin. He has been given my righteousness.

  63. Listen to His request. There's much intercessory prayer in the Bible. A few examples. Job prayed for his

  64. friends. Job 42 10. Moses prayed for Aaron. Deuteronomy 9 20. David prayed for Israel. 2 Samuel 24 17. So did

  65. Isaiah and Daniel and Ezekiel. Get those references from me later if you'd like. Nehemiah did the same.

  66. Chapter 1 verse 4 through 11 of Nehemiah. Jesus prayed for the apostles and the rest of those

  67. who would and will follow him as his disciples. John 17 9-24. Epaphras prayed for the Colossians.

  68. You see this in Colossians 4.12. Just a page over from where we are. And here we see that Paul and

  69. Timothy also prayed for the Colossian church, even though they did not know them personally.

  70. In verse 8, they had heard from Epaphras of their love for one another in the Spirit.

  71. They knew that we would know Jesus' disciples by their love for one another. So they had been given

  72. evidence that the Colossians were their brothers. They had been adopted into the same family and

  73. therefore they loved them, even though they did not know them. They did not establish the church there.

  74. It's likely that Epaphras, the beginner of the church, had heard the gospel in Ephesus where Paul

  75. was preaching. And the text states that they prayed for them continually. We have not ceased to pray for you.

  76. God has accomplished mighty things for his people using the prayers of his people on their behalf.

  77. Charles Spurgeon, on the presence of examples of intercessory prayer in the Scripture, said this,

  78. Intercessory prayer is exceedingly prevalent. What wonders it has wrought. The Word of God

  79. teems with its marvelous deeds. Believer, thou hast a mighty engine in thy hand. Use it well. Use it

  80. constantly. Use it with faith. And thou shalt surely be a benefactor to thy brethren.

  81. Intercessory prayer, because it is the way in which God chooses so often to act in the lives of others,

  82. has great power. And so you have a ministry in our church. As a congregant of Christ Family Church,

  83. whether you're a member or just a regular attender, as a person sitting here today, you have a ministry.

  84. Pray for one another. Second observation. So that was the first one. Paul and Timothy's example of

  85. intercession. We ought to intercede for one another. Secondly, let's look at Paul and Timothy's actual

  86. intercession. The last half of nine. Asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in

  87. all spiritual wisdom and understanding. So they make a request that they be filled with knowledge.

  88. Filled with it in a controlling way is what Paul is driving at here. That they so know something

  89. that they be moved by it and controlled by it. The Greek word here is epi-gnosis. Gnosis meaning knowledge

  90. and an added preposition to the front of that, epi-gnosis, heightens the veracity of the noun. It means a deep

  91. and thorough knowledge. Epi-gnosis. A deep and thorough knowledge. A knowledge that fills to the point of

  92. controlling and changing who they are. There's a great error in the church today. It certainly exists in ours,

  93. and that is the error of mysticism. I hear way too much talk about feelings giving us direction. I feel like

  94. this is the way I ought to go. I feel called to a particular vocation or particular activity or particular

  95. city. This is not the language of the Bible. Our heads are never meant to be divorced.

  96. From our hearts. They don't function separate from one another. In fact, they're like,

  97. I'm connected by a conduit. Right? I get to you in preaching through your head.

  98. Rightly, I get to you through your head. Right? I speak the truth to you, and you take it in,

  99. and you consider it, you think about it, and you give it application to your being.

  100. Is this who I am? Do I hold up to this truth? Do I rejoice in the truth of the gospel? This is the way in

  101. which we work. Some preaching these days simply appeals to the heart. Moves you in some way. There

  102. are many speakers who we would classify. I would bow to their speaking prowess. They move people,

  103. but they say very little. You feel something, but what do you do with that something? You have some

  104. bit of revelatory joy, and then it fades away because it has no basis in knowledge. Our heads are never

  105. meant to be divorced from our hearts. Proverbs 19.2 warns that it is not good to be without knowledge.

  106. Isaiah 5.13 states that it was for lack of knowledge that the Israelites were led into exile. They did not

  107. know God and how to worship Him. Therefore, they were punished severely, led into exile. Knowledge is a

  108. major theme in the scriptures, and certainly, and especially, I would say, in Paul's writing. Let me show

  109. you a few examples. 1 Corinthians 1.5. He writes that in every way you were enriched in Him and

  110. all speech and all knowledge. He prayed in Ephesians 1.17, that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  111. the Father of glory, may give you the spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of Him.

  112. In Philippians 1.9, he states, and it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more with knowledge

  113. and all discernment. Most of his letters lay a doctrinal foundation before giving any practical

  114. exhortation. Right? He roots the very activity of our lives in who God is and what He has done on our

  115. behalf. Romans, there's 11 chapters of doctrine before the five chapters of exhortation. Now, in light of

  116. all these things, so therefore, because of everything I've told you to be true about the gospel of Jesus

  117. Christ, live this way. Galatians, the first four chapters are doctrine. The last two, exhortation. Ephesians,

  118. it's split evenly, three and three. Philippians and Colossians follow this pattern. Doctrine first, then

  119. exhortation. Knowledge and then applied knowledge. So he prays that they would have knowledge, but knowledge of

  120. what? Not just general knowledge, not knowledge of psychology or biology, but knowledge of God's will.

  121. Knowledge of God's will. And here they are not referring to God's will for your life in a specific way,

  122. in a concealed way. Who you should marry, where you should go to school, what type of job you should

  123. take. John MacArthur calls this dot theology, that we have this idea that there's some perfect will in

  124. which we're meant to channel it. We got to get in there just perfect and thread it just right for God

  125. to be pleased with us, right? People get so consumed with that. College students, you especially, in the

  126. stage in your life where many things are being laid out before you, and there are a lot of opportunities

  127. and options. The largest part of my counseling as a pastor is counseling people on what decisions they

  128. should make. And so often there is no clear answer. I go, that's a good decision, and so is that one.

  129. This is not the God's will he was referring to here. He's referring to the God's will as revealed

  130. in the Scripture. The revealed will of God. Those things that we are meant to be practicing.

  131. John MacArthur organizes these well, and I appreciate he's got a wonderful sermon on this you can go

  132. search for, where he summarizes that if you will practice the revealed will of God, after that,

  133. do whatever you want. If you can say to yourself honestly, I'm practicing the revealed will of God

  134. as shown in the Scriptures, then it'll be obvious to you where you should live and who you should marry

  135. and what job you should take. John MacArthur organized it this way, six things God wills for your life.

  136. Here's your second list. I'm going to run through it fast with no Scripture proofs at all, because it's

  137. not the thrust of today. One, that you be saved. That you come to saving faith in Christ. That your

  138. eternity be secure in Him. Second, that you be Spirit-filled. That you walk by the Spirit.

  139. Third, that you be sanctified. That you are set apart for God's purposes, and you are about this

  140. activity, this synergistic activity of becoming perfect day by day, pursuing holiness, putting off sin,

  141. putting on righteousness. Fourthly, that you be submissive to authority. Varying authorities.

  142. Governmental authority. Authority in the church. Wives with husbands. That you be submissive to authority.

  143. Fifthly, that you suffer. The will of God. That you suffer. That you suffer for His name's sake.

  144. And sixthly, that you be satisfied. Now, MacArthur actually says thankful, which expresses it better,

  145. but it just drives me crazy that He used all S's except for that one. So, that you be satisfied,

  146. by which I mean thankful. That whatever circumstance you walk through, you recognize the sovereignty of

  147. God in all things, and that you give Him, ascribe to Him proper thanks for whatever it is that you're

  148. going through. And that if you're practicing these six things, and these are general and summary

  149. for the Christian life, then you just do whatever you want.

  150. C.S. Lewis in Mere Christianity said,

  151. God is no fonder of intellectual slackers than of any other slackers.

  152. If you are thinking of becoming a Christian, I warn you, you are embarking on something which is going

  153. to take the whole of you, brains and all. You heard a believer say that they don't enjoy theology,

  154. or that they don't want to be theological. If you're going to speak of Christ, you're being theological.

  155. And you better be sure that you're getting it right.

  156. So, Paul and Timothy's prayer is not just that they be filled with the knowledge of His will,

  157. but Paul adds, in all spiritual wisdom and understanding.

  158. Here's a sermon in and of itself. Wisdom and understanding taken together, this is my definition,

  159. is the ability to discern the truth and give proper application to said truth. The ability to discern

  160. the truth and give proper application to the truth. But their prayer is that they would do this in all

  161. spiritual wisdom and understanding, which states the source of the wisdom and understanding. Not human

  162. wisdom and understanding, but spiritual. The Spirit of God bringing to us revelation as we read God's Word.

  163. Douglas J. Moo, which you'll I'm sure hear me quote a number of times as we study through Colossians,

  164. because I have a wonderful commentary by him on the book, said,

  165. The Spirit is the source of the wisdom and understanding that the Colossians were acquired

  166. as they negotiated their way through the maze of first century worldview options. They needed the

  167. Spirit of God to help them understand the way in which they were to go, what they were to believe. And this

  168. is equally true of us. Heresy abounds in our day. There is much to be warned.

  169. But let me just do so in a general way, in the way in which we're meant to be working together

  170. by having you turn to Ephesians chapter 4. Mark Colossians in some way, your finger or your handy ribbon.

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  171. In Ephesians 4 verse 11, Paul talks about the varying roles in the church that have been given to the church.

    Ephesians 4:11

  172. In verse 12, for the work of equipping the saints for the work of ministry for the building up of the body of Christ.

  173. So the leadership in a church, those particular positions in a church are meant to equip the saints

  174. for the work of ministry, which is the building up of the body of Christ. This is the work of ministry

  175. that has been given to all of us. We all have this activity that we are to be about.

  176. And then starting in verse 13, if you'll follow along with me.

  177. Until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God.

  178. There's that knowledge again.

  179. To mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.

  180. So that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves,

  181. and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes.

  182. There's much blowing around out there.

  183. And we must be founded in the truth of the gospel so that we won't be tossed to and fro.

  184. Now the connection for you is that back in verse 4,

  185. Paul writes there is one body and one spirit.

  186. And how did Christ give the gifts at work in verse 11?

  187. He gave them by the Spirit.

  188. He is the very source for this giftedness.

  189. And he is the strength and the ability to carry out this work.

  190. And so as Paul is praying, Paul joined with Timothy.

  191. It's what we assume with the plural pronouns there.

  192. That as he's praying this, he's not disconnecting it from activity in the church.

  193. Right?

  194. He's praying that we will attain this type of knowledge that we'll be working together with spiritual wisdom and understanding.

  195. That there will be an activity about that.

  196. Again, you have a ministry in our church.

  197. Helping someone else along.

  198. I know that you don't feel like you've arrived yet.

  199. Neither do I.

  200. I tremble sometimes at the things I have to teach.

  201. I tremble when somebody comes to me with a question that is so far outside my scope.

  202. But we have the Scripture.

  203. We've been given the Word of God.

  204. And we've been given the Spirit of God to give application for it.

  205. Dive into that.

  206. You have a ministry in our church.

  207. He or she may be sitting to your right or your left.

  208. Across the room.

  209. Begin to identify people.

  210. I can tell you now that if you come to me and ask for something to do, what can I do to help out around here?

  211. Be ready because I'm probably going to go see him.

  212. No one's talking to him right now.

  213. This is your ministry today.

  214. Go get busy doing that.

  215. And see if there's anything you can do to invest in that person's life.

  216. I will make you busy.

  217. Imagine a community of faith that is constantly in a big complex web just preaching the gospel to each other all the time.

  218. In all the varying ways.

  219. And we do this in a high degree as a church already.

  220. It needs to happen more.

  221. You have a ministry in our church.

  222. We observe Paul and Timothy's example of intercession.

  223. Paul and Timothy's intercession itself.

  224. What was it that they were praying for?

  225. However, thirdly, let's observe the aim of Paul and Timothy's intercession.

  226. So they make this intercession on behalf of the Colossian church.

  227. And this information is now passed on to us that we may be filled with the knowledge of God's will and all spiritual wisdom and understanding.

  228. But there's an aim for that.

  229. Not just that we know things.

  230. That we have this big fat head full of information.

  231. But that we're able to work that out.

  232. And Paul is not shy in giving to us the way in which that should be working out.

  233. So the intercession is aimed at five things.

  234. Five things.

  235. Number one.

  236. Here's your second list within your list.

  237. A worthy walk.

  238. Number one.

  239. A worthy walk.

  240. Now he is not communicating that our walk is what makes us worthy.

  241. This is not what he's saying.

  242. What he's saying is that because we are found worthy,

  243. we will walk in a particular way.

  244. A walk refers to the daily pattern of life and includes those activities seen and unseen.

  245. It includes the way you think, the way you feel, the way you act and speak.

  246. As I said, we are found worthy.

  247. We are only found worthy in this absolute sense in Christ.

  248. And because we're worthy, we should walk in a way that is pleasing to God.

  249. We have been redeemed.

  250. This is the monergistic work of God.

  251. God Himself worked that change in us.

  252. We have been changed.

  253. We have been made His.

  254. Now we are being sanctified synergistically.

  255. We have an activity and a part to play in that.

  256. Galatians 2.20, Paul writes,

  257. I have been crucified with Christ.

  258. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me.

  259. And the life I now live in the flesh, I live by faith in the Son of God who loved me and gave Himself for me.

  260. So even as we are to work out our salvation with fear and trembling,

  261. we do so by the power and strength of God in us.

  262. There's a wonderful hymn that doesn't really match our musical style,

  263. although maybe Wes could pull it off for us sometime.

  264. Written by Martin Luther called,

  265. A Mighty Fortress is Our God.

  266. And the second verse reads like this.

  267. I really debated singing this, but I'm not going to.

  268. It's hard to get the tune out of your head though once it's in there.

  269. Just listen to the words.

  270. Did we in our own strength confide,

  271. our striving would be losing.

  272. We're not the right man on our side,

  273. the man of God's own choosing.

  274. Dost ask who that may be?

  275. Christ Jesus, it is He.

  276. Lord, sabay off His name from age to age the same,

  277. and He must win the battle.

  278. And He will for sure.

  279. Lord, sabay off means God of the universe,

  280. which is where Paul heads next in the text.

  281. I'm so excited about next Sunday,

  282. in the text for us next Sunday.

  283. Okay, so this is the first aim.

  284. A worthy walk.

  285. Secondly, a fruitful life.

  286. The last half of verse 10.

  287. Bearing fruit in every good work.

  288. In every good work,

  289. and all of the activity that is set before a Christian,

  290. that we would bear fruit.

  291. That we would reproduce ourselves.

  292. My mind is drawn to the parable of the sower in Mark 4,

  293. which we just completed preaching through.

  294. Jesus' explanation in Mark 4.20 says,

  295. This is the mark of the good soil.

  296. The one who has received the Word,

  297. and accepted the Word,

  298. placed faith in the Word,

  299. had the Word change them,

  300. had the Word set them about an activity,

  301. bear fruit in varying degree.

  302. Don't compare yourself to another,

  303. but is your life bearing fruit?

  304. This is one of the aims of Paul's prayer

  305. for the Colossian church and for us.

  306. The third aim,

  307. growth in knowledge.

  308. This has been already a prayer

  309. that there would be a filling of knowledge,

  310. a changing of their direction,

  311. God's will,

  312. but now he's asking for a growth in it,

  313. an increase in the knowledge of God.

  314. The writer of Hebrews writes in Hebrews 5.12,

  315. For though by this time you ought to be teachers,

  316. you need someone to teach you again

  317. the basic principles of the oracles of God.

  318. You need milk, not solid food.

  319. The writer of Hebrews is saying,

  320. you are babies still in the faith.

  321. We are meant to grow in our knowledge of God.

  322. We can certainly know the Gospel.

  323. We must know it.

  324. We must have it preached to us

  325. in order to place our faith in it.

  326. But we also must grow in our Gospel knowledge.

  327. Learn it.

  328. Understand it.

  329. Turn it over.

  330. It's so beautiful.

  331. And look at it from all of its varying perspectives

  332. that you might have a deeper understanding

  333. of who God is,

  334. a greater understanding of who you are,

  335. which will do nothing but cause you to exalt

  336. in the personal work of Jesus Christ.

  337. We must grow in the knowledge of God.

  338. I hope that you can join in with the psalmist

  339. in Psalm 119.97

  340. and say,

  341. Oh, how I love your law.

  342. It is my meditation all the day.

  343. We cherish it.

  344. That it is precious to us.

  345. That we be a people of the Word.

  346. So many of us are biblically illiterate.

  347. And we wonder why we have problems in our life.

  348. Fourthly,

  349. fourth aim,

  350. spiritual strength.

  351. First part of verse 11.

  352. May you be strengthened with all power

  353. according to His glorious might.

  354. Now the word strengthened in Greek

  355. is a present participle,

  356. which means it's an ongoing activity.

  357. Not like God charges us up with strength,

  358. but that He's constantly providing strength.

  359. According to His glorious might,

  360. the strength of all power

  361. according to His glorious might,

  362. which means that the power available to us

  363. is the limitless power of God Himself.

  364. Paul prayed in Ephesians 3.16

  365. that according to the riches of His glory,

  366. He may grant you to be strengthened with power

  367. through His Spirit in your inner being.

  368. We have been given this

  369. if we are found in Christ.

  370. Strengthened with all power

  371. according to His glorious might.

  372. And the last aim,

  373. fifthly,

  374. endurance with thankfulness.

  375. Last part of verse 11.

  376. For all endurance and patience with joy.

  377. Now endurance and patience are closely related.

  378. If there is a distinction to be made,

  379. endurance deals with circumstance

  380. while patience deals with people.

  381. Both are concerned with trials of various kinds.

  382. So endurance and patience.

  383. We are to endure not merely as stoics,

  384. gritting our teeth,

  385. bearing down.

  386. Think that this is a particular challenge

  387. and problem for American men.

  388. We've kind of ingrained in us

  389. a culture of the cowboy, right?

  390. Grin and bear.

  391. We're not to do it as stoics,

  392. but with joy.

  393. For all endurance and patience.

  394. With joy.

  395. And then we're said,

  396. in the beginning of verse 12,

  397. giving thanks to the Father.

  398. Joy overflowing into thanks.

  399. Look at a wonderful example of this

  400. in Acts chapter 5.

    Acts 5 chapter mention

  401. After the apostles had been on trial,

  402. verse 40 and 42.

  403. And when they had called in the apostles,

  404. excuse me,

  405. this is the council.

  406. When they had called in the apostles,

  407. they beat them

  408. and charged them

  409. not to speak in the name of Jesus

  410. and let them go.

  411. So they are strictly warned

  412. with a beating

  413. to not speak in the name of Jesus.

  414. Then they left the presence of the council,

  415. rejoicing that they were counted

  416. worthy to suffer dishonor

  417. for the name.

  418. Right?

  419. Giving thanks

  420. that they were allowed to suffer

  421. for the name of Jesus Christ.

  422. And the verse 42 says,

  423. and every day in the temple,

  424. so in a public place,

  425. and from house to house,

  426. they did not cease teaching or preaching

  427. that the Christ is Jesus.

  428. Enduring with patience

  429. and joy and thanksgiving.

  430. Back to our main list.

  431. So we've got observations.

  432. Firstly, Paul and Timothy's example

  433. of intercession.

  434. Second, Paul and Timothy's intercession.

  435. Thirdly, the aim of Paul and Timothy's intercession.

  436. And then fourthly,

  437. the confidence of Paul and Timothy's intercession.

  438. The confidence of Paul and Timothy's intercession.

  439. Last part of 12

  440. through the end of our text.

  441. Now, note with me four reasons

  442. for their confidence.

  443. Last list.

  444. Four reasons for their confidence.

  445. You can see why I could have done

  446. four sermons on all of this.

  447. Now, by confidence of their intercession,

  448. I do not mean what makes them confident

  449. to intercede,

  450. although that's still true of them here.

  451. Previously stated,

  452. it is because Christ is our great intercessor

  453. that we have the confidence to intercede.

  454. But what I mean when I say

  455. four reasons for their confidence,

  456. I'm talking about what makes them confident

  457. that God will answer in kind

  458. to their requests.

  459. That He is favorable to these things.

  460. That they can pray these things in His name.

  461. And that He will, in fact,

  462. deliver on those requests.

  463. So, reason for their confidence,

  464. number one.

  465. The inheritance given to the saints.

  466. Last half of 12.

  467. We have been qualified to share

  468. in the inheritance of the saints

  469. in light.

  470. We are unqualified apart from the grace of God.

  471. Totally cut off.

  472. Nothing we could possibly do.

  473. This is the great lesson of the moral law.

  474. That you cannot keep the moral law.

  475. That God's requirement of us

  476. as sin-stained being is too high.

  477. It's impossible for us to do

  478. apart from the grace of God.

  479. There's strong language in the Scripture about this.

  480. Paul writes in Ephesians 2, 1-3,

  481. and you were dead in the trespasses

  482. and sins in which you once walked,

  483. following the course of this world,

  484. following the prince of the power of the air,

  485. the spirit that is now at work

  486. in the sons of disobedience,

  487. among whom we all once lived

  488. in the passions of our flesh,

  489. carrying out the desires of the body

  490. and the mind,

  491. and were by nature children of wrath

  492. like the rest of mankind.

  493. This is who we once were,

  494. and this is who you are

  495. if you're not found in Christ.

  496. We are ensnared.

  497. We are trapped by.

  498. We are being lorded over by

  499. the prince of the power of the air.

  500. Praise God.

  501. Because of His deliverance in Christ,

  502. this has changed for us.

  503. We are now His.

  504. Romans 8.14 says,

  505. For all who are led by the Spirit of God

  506. are sons of God.

  507. Now ladies,

  508. when you see that language

  509. in the Scriptures,

  510. please don't think

  511. that the Scripture is being translated

  512. in an outdated way.

  513. That it's important for the translators

  514. to go back and use

  515. some gender-neutral language in that way.

  516. If they were to do so,

  517. they would neuter the text.

  518. It's making a very strong point.

  519. The fault is not in the translation.

  520. The fault is in your understanding

  521. of who these letters

  522. were originally written to.

  523. A very patriarchal society,

  524. to be sure.

  525. In which only sons

  526. received any inheritance.

  527. The way in which a lady,

  528. a sister,

  529. was to gain an inheritance

  530. was to be married.

  531. This is the way that wealth

  532. was passed along.

  533. So ladies,

  534. you want to be sons of God.

  535. What that language communicates.

  536. But I do appreciate,

  537. in verse 17,

  538. Paul goes on to say,

  539. and if children,

  540. then heirs.

  541. Heirs of God

  542. and fellow heirs

  543. with Christ.

  544. We are all

  545. full family members.

  546. No distinction is made

  547. between us

  548. if we are found

  549. in Christ.

  550. We have been

  551. qualified now

  552. to share

  553. in the inheritance

  554. of the saints

  555. in light.

  556. I think John's writing

  557. helps expound

  558. on that idea

  559. of the inheritance

  560. of the saints

  561. in light

  562. a bit for us.

  563. 1 John 1,

    1 John 1:5

  564. verse 5,

  565. this is the message

  566. we have heard from him

  567. and proclaim to you

  568. that God is light

  569. and in him

  570. is no darkness

  571. at all.

  572. If we say

  573. we have fellowship

  574. with him

  575. while we walk

  576. in darkness,

  577. we lie

  578. and do not practice

  579. the truth.

  580. But if we walk

  581. in the light

  582. as he is in the light,

  583. we have fellowship

  584. with one another

  585. and the blood

  586. of Jesus' Son

  587. cleanses us

  588. from all sin.

  589. Of course,

  590. 1 John being the great

  591. test of our faith,

  592. but we can certainly say

  593. that if we pursue

  594. righteousness,

  595. if we're hating

  596. the world

  597. and we're loving

  598. the things of God,

  599. we're walking

  600. in the light.

  601. God is light.

  602. In him there is

  603. no darkness

  604. at all.

  605. We have been

  606. granted,

  607. qualified,

  608. to share in the

  609. inheritance

  610. of the saints

  611. in light.

  612. Now, I know

  613. that many people

  614. struggle with this.

  615. The great aim

  616. of pastoral counseling

  617. is to draw

  618. people's minds

  619. back to the Gospel.

  620. To unravel

  621. all of their thought

  622. and all of their emotion

  623. and get them back

  624. to the place

  625. to see who

  626. they are

  627. because of God's work

  628. on their behalf.

  629. I know that many

  630. of you struggle

  631. with besetting sin.

  632. Habitual type

  633. of sin.

  634. And while we see

  635. much evidence

  636. of the pursuit

  637. of righteousness

  638. in your life,

  639. there are things

  640. that cause you

  641. to fall

  642. again and again

  643. and again.

  644. I know that many

  645. of you walk around

  646. with a great deal

  647. of guilt

  648. and feelings

  649. of inadequacy.

  650. Let me draw

  651. your mind

  652. back to the Gospel.

  653. This is what

  654. Paul is doing.

  655. He's rooting

  656. the very foundation

  657. for his request.

  658. All of these

  659. good things

  660. he desires

  661. to see happen

  662. in the life

  663. of the Colossian

  664. believers

  665. in the Gospel

  666. truth.

  667. A pastor

  668. named Sam Storms

  669. in a book

  670. he wrote

  671. called The Hope

  672. of Glory,

  673. which are meditations

  674. on Colossians,

  675. wrote,

  676. whatever feelings

  677. of inadequacy

  678. or sense of shame

  679. or depths of despair

  680. may have crippled

  681. you till now.

  682. God has qualified

  683. you to share

  684. in the inheritance

  685. of the saints

  686. of light.

  687. If you find yourself

  688. saying,

  689. I'm not up to the task,

  690. I'm a miserable failure,

  691. I'm a hell-deserving wretch,

  692. I don't deserve

  693. to stand in God's presence,

  694. the only thing

  695. I should inherit

  696. is death.

  697. God now says

  698. to those who are

  699. in Christ

  700. qualified,

  701. forgiven,

  702. adequate in Jesus,

  703. righteous in my Son,

  704. come and receive

  705. and enjoy

  706. your inheritance

  707. together with

  708. all the saints

  709. in the life-giving,

  710. soul-cleansing light

  711. of my kingdom.

  712. Praise God

  713. that we have

  714. an inheritance.

  715. Reason two

  716. for Paul and Timothy's

  717. confidence

  718. delivers

  719. verse 13

  720. says He has delivered

  721. us from the domain

  722. of darkness.

  723. We've been brought

  724. to the domain

  725. of light,

  726. the kingdom of light.

  727. He's delivered us

  728. from the domain

  729. of darkness.

  730. We have been rescued

  731. from the power

  732. of evil.

  733. It has no ultimate

  734. sway

  735. over our lives.

  736. Do you believe

  737. that you've been

  738. set free

  739. from sin?

  740. many of you

  741. act as if

  742. that's not

  743. the case.

  744. You've been set

  745. free from it.

  746. It no longer

  747. has dominion

  748. over you.

  749. John writes

  750. in 1 John 4

  751. 4,

  752. He who is in you

  753. is greater

  754. than he

  755. who is in the world.

  756. So the second

  757. reason for their

  758. confidence

  759. is our deliverance.

  760. Third reason

  761. for our confidence

  762. is the Colossians

  763. in our

  764. transference.

  765. We've been

  766. transferred.

  767. We've transferred

  768. us to the

  769. kingdom

  770. of His

  771. beloved

  772. Son.

  773. We're no longer

  774. citizens of the

  775. world.

  776. We're now citizens

  777. of the kingdom

  778. of God.

  779. We do not differ

  780. in degree.

  781. We do not differ

  782. in degree.

  783. We're not a little

  784. better than we

  785. once were.

  786. We are different

  787. than who we

  788. once were.

  789. We don't differ

  790. in degree,

  791. but we differ

  792. in type.

  793. 1 Peter 2.10

  794. Peter cites

  795. from Hosea,

  796. Once you were

  797. not a people,

  798. but now you

  799. are God's people.

  800. Once you had

  801. not received

  802. mercy,

  803. but now you

  804. have received

  805. mercy.

  806. And on what

  807. basis are we

  808. citizens of

  809. God's kingdom?

  810. On the basis

  811. of righteousness.

  812. This is our

  813. key to the city.

  814. This is what

  815. grants us

  816. access to

  817. God's kingdom.

  818. But not ours.

  819. Christ.

  820. Again,

  821. Christ has

  822. imputed to us

  823. His righteousness.

  824. The reason Christ

  825. had to come and

  826. live a perfect life

  827. was so that

  828. He fulfilled

  829. the law.

  830. So that He came

  831. and lived it

  832. perfectly.

  833. And He therefore

  834. had an account

  835. to credit

  836. to us.

  837. Righteousness

  838. to give

  839. to us.

  840. Christ.

  841. There's a

  842. double imputation

  843. of Christ

  844. in redemption.

  845. We're given

  846. Christ's

  847. righteousness.

  848. And fourthly,

  849. the fourth reason

  850. for their confidence,

  851. we're given

  852. forgiveness.

  853. Our sins have

  854. been forgiven.

  855. Verse 14,

  856. in whom we have

  857. redemption,

  858. the forgiveness

  859. of sins.

  860. Because God is

  861. perfectly just,

  862. God could not

  863. simply dismiss

  864. sin.

  865. That would not

  866. be justice.

  867. He has to

  868. punish sin.

  869. It is infinitely

  870. offensive to Him,

  871. so He punished

  872. infinitely in

  873. Christ our

  874. sin.

  875. We are imputed

  876. the suffering

  877. of Christ.

  878. That has been

  879. forgiven us.

  880. Our sin has been

  881. wiped clean because

  882. it has been punished

  883. in Christ.

  884. I'm going to

  885. read it to us

  886. at the closing

  887. of the Lord's

  888. Supper for the

  889. benefit of our

  890. souls.

  891. This is what

  892. causes Paul to

  893. launch into a

  894. cosmic,

  895. Christological

  896. hymn in

  897. verses 15-20.

  898. This kingdom

  899. in which we

  900. have been

  901. delivered to,

  902. the forgiveness

  903. of our sins

  904. in Christ,

  905. is what causes

  906. Him to go on

  907. to say these

  908. magnificent

  909. things about

  910. who He is,

  911. was,

  912. and now is

  913. to us

  914. in this day.

  915. Praise God

  916. forevermore

  917. for the person

  918. and work

  919. of Jesus Christ.

  920. Because of who

  921. the Colossians

  922. were,

  923. and because of

  924. who we are,

  925. if we are in

  926. Christ,

  927. we only have

  928. two choices.

  929. Be obedient

  930. or make

  931. excuses.

  932. You have been

  933. delivered.

  934. You have been

  935. set free.

  936. You have been

  937. given all the

  938. power you need

  939. to live for

  940. God.

  941. So be obedient

  942. or make excuses.

  943. It's the only

  944. two choices

  945. you have.

  946. because of

  947. who the

  948. Colossians

  949. were,

  950. and because

  951. of who we

  952. are,

  953. if we are

  954. in Christ,

  955. Paul and

  956. Timothy can

  957. confidently ask

  958. and know

  959. that their

  960. prayers will be

  961. answered,

  962. and we can

  963. pray in the

  964. same way for

  965. one another

  966. and have the

  967. same confidence

  968. before God.

  969. And I hope

  970. that you will

  971. begin to do

  972. so if you're

  973. not already.

  974. In closing,

  975. let me read

  976. the text to you

  977. one more time.

  978. And so from

  979. the day we

  980. heard,

  981. we have not

  982. ceased to

  983. pray for you,

  984. asking that you

  985. may be filled

  986. with the knowledge

  987. of his will

  988. and all spiritual

  989. wisdom and

  990. understanding,

  991. so as to walk

  992. in a manner

  993. worthy of the

  994. Lord,

  995. fully pleasing

  996. to him,

  997. bearing fruit

  998. in every good

  999. work and

  1000. increasing in

  1001. the knowledge

  1002. of God.

  1003. May you be
