  1. As the spring semester has come to an end and we're entering into the summer, we have begun a verse-by-verse exposition of the book of Colossians.

  2. So let me invite you to turn there with me to Colossians chapter 1 while I explain to you why I'm not going to be preaching from Colossians this morning.

    Colossians 1 chapter mention

  3. But I want to show you the why and the how of it.

  4. Last week was a very busy week for me, primarily because the Dahlonega Care Center had its banquet on Friday.

  5. And thank you to all of you who were part of that and made it possible.

  6. It went very well, but occupied much of my extra brain capacity.

  7. So I got started very early in the week, hammering after Colossians 1, 15 through 20, this great cosmic Christological hymn.

  8. It's such a precious, precious text.

  9. It's the center, although not in verse counting, but it's the center of Paul's letter to the Colossian church.

  10. It is a phenomenal passage of text.

  11. And so I got an early start on it and went after it hard and have enjoyed my study of it and am prepared to preach 15 through 20.

  12. But I failed my little bit of extra brain bandwidth to realize that I got way ahead of myself in my preparation.

  13. That for our schedule for the summer, I had intended to preach verses 15 through 17.

  14. And then next week, verses 18 through 20.

  15. Which made a mild conundrum.

  16. Not a large conundrum, but a small one.

  17. Just that if I preach Colossians 1, 15 through 20 this week, we'd be a week ahead.

  18. And at some point would have to drop out or finish early and fill in something topical before college students come back in the fall.

  19. Not a major deal, but began to make me go, huh, I wonder if maybe.

  20. All this happening at 5 o'clock yesterday evening.

  21. As I said to you previously, going throughout the week, I heard many, many, I won't be there this Sunday.

  22. And so those two things combined caused me to say, well, let me step away from the text.

  23. We'll pick up next week again, 15 through 20, in Colossians.

  24. But let me step away from it for this week.

  25. And then our main crew will be back next week and we can press on together in the book of Colossians.

  26. So this morning, I'll preach a Mother's Day sermon of sort.

  27. So if you will, join me in Proverbs, the book of Proverbs, chapter 1.

    Proverbs 1 chapter mention

  28. I'm thankful for a church that appreciates verse by verse exposition.

  29. I hope this doesn't offend your sensibilities too much.

  30. Too upset with me.

  31. Proverbs, chapter 1, verses 7 through 9.

    Proverbs 1:7–9

  32. This is God's Word to us.

  33. It was written for His glory and our good.

  34. We would all do well to listen to it in order to believe its promises and obey its commands.

  35. And this morning, I want to observe, to pull out from these three verses,

  36. six realities from Proverbs 1, 7 through 9.

  37. A little less complex than last week.

  38. You won't have three lists within a major list.

  39. Just one list, six realities from Proverbs 1, 7 through 9.

  40. Firstly, reality number one, the family is an institution of God's making.

  41. Solomon here, writer of this beginning proverb, writing to his son,

  42. takes for granted that his readers will have fathers and mothers to listen to.

  43. That God's good design would be at play in the world.

  44. God created the family.

  45. The family is God's plan.

  46. God's desire.

  47. To put it one more way, the family is ordained by God in creation.

  48. In the very first chapter of the Bible,

  49. Genesis 1, 27 and 28 says,

  50. And God created man in His own image.

  51. In the image of God, He created them.

  52. Male and female, He created them.

  53. And God blessed them.

  54. And God said to them,

  55. Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth.

  56. I brought you together.

  57. One of the purposes of Adam and Eve being brought together

  58. was that they would multiply,

  59. that they would be a family.

  60. How were they to do this fruitful earth filling

  61. by indiscriminate mating pregnancies?

  62. The second chapter of the Bible, Genesis 2, 24, gives the answer.

  63. A man shall leave his father and his mother

  64. and shall cleave to his wife

  65. and they shall become one flesh.

  66. This profound relationship between one man and one woman

  67. whose covenant relationship shows the world

  68. the way that God relates to His covenant people

  69. in love and faithfulness

  70. was meant to reproduce little ones

  71. who also honor God as His image bears.

  72. This was God's original intention.

  73. His original design.

  74. All of this by grace

  75. God has sustained countless imperfect people

  76. and countless imperfect situations

  77. for the sake of His name.

  78. But God intended for the family

  79. to be in full function in the world.

  80. Why do you think that Satan

  81. is so going after the family

  82. to destroy it,

  83. to rip it apart?

  84. As goes the family,

  85. so goes the society.

  86. Do you know the three institutions

  87. that God's ordained?

  88. There's three.

  89. The family,

  90. the church,

  91. and the government.

  92. All ordained by God

  93. to serve a very particular role

  94. and function.

  95. And when those roles and functions

  96. are traded,

  97. when the parameters between them

  98. get skewed,

  99. bad things always happen.

  100. The family was created by God

  101. to help God's little ones

  102. worship Him.

  103. And Solomon assumes

  104. the family is exercising its role

  105. in this text.

  106. So the family is an institution

  107. of God's making, firstly.

  108. Second reality,

  109. the family is meant to be

  110. a school.

  111. The family is meant to be

  112. a school.

  113. Note verse 7,

  114. the commendation of knowledge.

  115. Fools despise wisdom

  116. and instruction.

  117. And then Solomon says to his son,

  118. how is it that this wisdom

  119. and instruction

  120. is going to come to you?

  121. It's going to come to you

  122. by your mother

  123. and your father

  124. in the family.

  125. The family is God's basic school

  126. for instructing children

  127. how to live in the world.

  128. Unlike many animals,

  129. children do very little

  130. instinctually.

  131. There's some amazing things

  132. they do,

  133. like when a baby's brand new,

  134. first born,

  135. if you knew this or not,

  136. but you can get them

  137. to grasp your fingers

  138. and you can pick them up.

  139. I haven't tried it,

  140. but so I'm told

  141. that this is true.

  142. That if you blow in their face

  143. or hold their breath

  144. and you can dunk them

  145. under water,

  146. also wasn't allowed

  147. to try that one.

  148. They suckle by instinct.

  149. They cry when they're hungry

  150. or tired.

  151. They blink.

  152. Probably it.

  153. Not much more than that.

  154. As humans,

  155. we must be taught

  156. how to eat and walk,

  157. how to talk and read,

  158. how to show gratitude

  159. and other manners.

  160. Just about everything

  161. that we do is learned.

  162. The family is God's intended school

  163. for this massive undertaking.

  164. The family certainly

  165. may employ the help of others

  166. in this effort.

  167. Relatives,

  168. a nanny,

  169. a school,

  170. the church,

  171. I would encourage

  172. all of those things.

  173. But ultimately,

  174. the responsibility

  175. for passing along

  176. the necessary skills

  177. for this life

  178. and,

  179. more importantly,

  180. the next life

  181. is laid squarely

  182. on the shoulders

  183. of the family.

  184. Parents,

  185. future parents,

  186. that is your responsibility.

  187. Proverbs 22.6

  188. says,

  189. Train up a child

  190. in the way he should go.

  191. Even when he is old,

  192. he will not depart from it.

  193. Deuteronomy 6.4-7

  194. Speaking of God's moral law,

  195. Hear, O Israel,

  196. the Lord our God,

  197. the Lord is one.

  198. You shall love the Lord your God

  199. with all your heart

  200. and with all your soul

  201. and with all your might.

  202. And these words

  203. that I command you today

  204. shall be on your heart.

  205. Then, verse 7,

  206. You shall teach them

  207. diligently to your children

  208. and shall talk of them

  209. when you sit in your house

  210. and when you walk by the way

  211. and when you lie down

  212. and when you rise.

  213. The family is an institution

  214. of God's making

  215. and the family is meant to be

  216. a school.

  217. Thirdly,

  218. the third reality in our text,

  219. the proper object

  220. of family instruction,

  221. the great end,

  222. the goal of all of the instructing

  223. that happens

  224. is the fear of the Lord.

  225. Verse 7 tells us,

  226. the fear of the Lord

  227. is the very beginning of knowledge.

  228. It is that foundation

  229. for anything else important in life

  230. that must be learned.

  231. What is the fear of the Lord?

  232. It's not a carnal fear,

  233. a fear that is faithless,

  234. that doesn't depend

  235. on the goodness

  236. and the sovereignty of God,

  237. but rather it's a divine fear.

  238. It's a faith-filled fear,

  239. which is the reverencing

  240. and adoring

  241. of God's holiness,

  242. the recognition

  243. that He is perfect,

  244. that His being

  245. is worthy of our awe.

  246. And it's the setting

  247. of ourselves

  248. always under

  249. His sacred inspection.

  250. Recognizing that

  251. in His holiness,

  252. He looks down upon us

  253. and expects the same.

  254. And we place ourselves

  255. under that

  256. and this causes

  257. a fear

  258. because we fail

  259. at this.

  260. The infinite distance

  261. between God and us

  262. causes this fear.

  263. And it's a good thing.

  264. It's a healthy thing

  265. because it drives us

  266. to the cross.

  267. Fear of the Lord

  268. is the leading grace.

  269. It's the beginning grace.

  270. The thing that God works

  271. in our hearts

  272. to change us.

  273. The thing that sends us

  274. running to the cross

  275. of Christ.

  276. Recognizing that God is holy

  277. and we are not

  278. and we will be judged

  279. and we need someone

  280. to stand in that gap

  281. for us.

  282. To make propitiation

  283. for our sin.

  284. Ecclesiastes 12,

  285. 13, and 14.

  286. In the book

  287. of Ecclesiastes,

  288. there's some speculation

  289. about who wrote it

  290. but likely Solomon

  291. wrote it.

  292. And it's amusing

  293. on what is of value

  294. in life

  295. and it sums up

  296. this way.

  297. Ecclesiastes 12,

  298. 13, and 14.

  299. The end of the matter.

  300. All has been heard.

  301. Fear God

  302. and keep His commandments

  303. for this is the whole duty

  304. of man.

  305. For God will bring

  306. every deed into judgment

  307. with every secret thing

  308. whether good

  309. or evil.

  310. So if we love our children

  311. properly,

  312. we will seek

  313. their greatest good.

  314. This is the aim of love.

  315. To seek the greatest good

  316. of the object

  317. of that love.

  318. I see so many parents

  319. these days

  320. simply pacifying

  321. their children.

  322. Giving in to their

  323. every whim

  324. and want.

  325. Meeting their children's

  326. felt needs

  327. rather than

  328. their real needs.

  329. Parents,

  330. this must not be so

  331. of us.

  332. We need to give

  333. our children

  334. what is good

  335. for their souls.

  336. Behavior modification

  337. should not be

  338. the ultimate goal

  339. of our parenting

  340. although it is

  341. part of it.

  342. We expect our children

  343. to act appropriately.

  344. I say to my sons

  345. all the time

  346. in punishment

  347. after the fact

  348. when we're reconciling

  349. I say to them

  350. all the time

  351. you're my son

  352. and I love you

  353. and that's why

  354. I want you to obey.

  355. Because of who you are

  356. you will act like

  357. my son.

  358. And I'm hoping

  359. that they'll get this

  360. and that it'll translate

  361. to who they're meant

  362. to be in Christ.

  363. Because you belong

  364. to God

  365. you will do

  366. what God

  367. wants you

  368. to do.

  369. Because ultimately

  370. what we want to see

  371. happening in our children

  372. is heart change.

  373. This is the aim

  374. of teaching them

  375. these things.

  376. This is why

  377. the fear of the Lord

  378. is so important

  379. because it's this

  380. leading grace

  381. in their lives.

  382. Our children need

  383. to fear the Lord

  384. so that they will run

  385. to the cross.

  386. So that they will

  387. embrace Christ

  388. in all that He offers them.

  389. All that He does

  390. in their place.

  391. We need to teach them

  392. the fear of the Lord

  393. so that they will find

  394. God so awesome

  395. that they will tremble

  396. at His holiness.

  397. A proper use

  398. of the word awesome.

  399. They will tremble

  400. at His holiness

  401. and they will also

  402. find Him so beautiful

  403. that they will never

  404. want to leave

  405. His presence.

  406. Proverbs 14

    Proverbs 14:26

  407. verse 26 and 27

  408. reads,

  409. In the fear of the Lord

  410. one has strong confidence

  411. and his children

  412. will have a refuge.

  413. The fear of the Lord

  414. is a fountain of life

  415. that one may turn away

  416. from the snares of death.

  417. And Proverbs 19.23 reads,

  418. The fear of the Lord

  419. leads to life

  420. and whoever has it

  421. rests satisfied.

  422. He will not be visited

  423. by harm.

  424. So,

  425. the family is an institution

  426. of God's making.

  427. It is meant to be

  428. a school

  429. and the proper object

  430. of family instruction

  431. is the fear of the Lord.

  432. The fourth reality

  433. from the text,

  434. the instruction

  435. in the fear of the Lord

  436. is the responsibility

  437. of fathers

  438. and

  439. mothers.

  440. It is the responsibility

  441. of fathers

  442. and

  443. mothers.

  444. I hope this is fairly

  445. obvious to you in the text,

  446. but it bears

  447. saying.

  448. Now,

  449. as the Father

  450. is meant to give

  451. leadership in the home,

  452. is primarily charged

  453. with leadership

  454. in the home,

  455. this includes also

  456. the instructions

  457. in the way of God.

  458. All things spiritual.

  459. He is ultimately

  460. responsible for this.

  461. But He is not alone

  462. in the task

  463. praise God.

  464. We've been given

  465. a partner,

  466. a helper,

  467. that's suitable for us

  468. to help us

  469. in this task.

  470. Still giving leadership

  471. to it,

  472. but having our dear

  473. wives and mothers

  474. come alongside us

  475. and help us

  476. in it.

  477. Verse 8,

  478. we see both

  479. at play here.

  480. Hear my son,

  481. your father's instruction

  482. and forsake not

  483. your mother's

  484. teaching.

  485. Now,

  486. since today

  487. is Mother's Day,

  488. I'm going to take

  489. a moment to encourage

  490. our mothers.

  491. At this point,

  492. certainly we could

  493. speak at length

  494. about the responsibility

  495. to fathers.

  496. Maybe some other

  497. Father's Day

  498. will do that.

  499. But to mothers

  500. today,

  501. we praise God

  502. as we rightly should

  503. for the mothers

  504. of our church.

  505. Mothers do

  506. so much

  507. and are so

  508. very often

  509. underappreciated.

  510. And the reality

  511. of it is

  512. that many mothers

  513. also undervalue

  514. their work.

  515. Many moms

  516. here today

  517. are very guilty

  518. of being

  519. swayed

  520. by Pinterest.

  521. You know

  522. that the wonderful

  523. moms on Pinterest

  524. took a long time

  525. to clean that

  526. corner of the room

  527. up so it looked

  528. so perfect

  529. and put together

  530. and as soon

  531. as they took

  532. the photo,

  533. it was destroyed

  534. by their children.

  535. So many moms

  536. feel day in

  537. and day out

  538. like such

  539. failures.

  540. But let me say

  541. to you

  542. that from the outside

  543. as an observer,

  544. the mothers

  545. of our church

  546. are doing

  547. a wonderful,

  548. wonderful job.

  549. I admire

  550. each

  551. and every one

  552. of you.

  553. None of you

  554. are perfect

  555. and have it

  556. wonderfully,

  557. perfectly figured out,

  558. but you are doing

  559. so well

  560. and so much better

  561. than many others.

  562. A lot of moms

  563. war against

  564. feminism.

  565. This idea

  566. that women

  567. must have careers,

  568. that simply being

  569. a mom is not

  570. enough,

  571. that that in and of

  572. itself is not

  573. a job,

  574. that you must do

  575. more and make

  576. more,

  577. that you're not

  578. created different

  579. to have a different

  580. task.

  581. Creeping into

  582. the church

  583. is the idea

  584. of egalitarianism,

  585. that men and women

  586. are alike

  587. in all ways.

  588. This is simply

  589. not true.

  590. This is a way

  591. that the enemy

  592. is attacking

  593. the very fabric

  594. of the family.

  595. We are

  596. complementarianism.

  597. Excuse me.

  598. We believe

  599. that men and women

  600. are equal.

  601. Stand before God

  602. equal,

  603. but different.

  604. Created to fulfill

  605. different roles.

  606. We have women

  607. in this church

  608. that are embracing

  609. that role,

  610. and I praise God

  611. for that.

  612. I think that's a

  613. grace working in

  614. your hearts to that

  615. end.

  616. But you war against

  617. feminism.

  618. People ask you

  619. what you do for a

  620. living,

  621. and you say,

  622. I'm a mom,

  623. and I hear it in

  624. your voice sometimes,

  625. like it's less.

  626. It's not as good

  627. as.

  628. Don't believe

  629. those lies.

  630. A lot of moms

  631. wrestle with the

  632. mundane,

  633. trying to find

  634. the value in the

  635. day-to-day,

  636. and the cleaning

  637. up,

  638. and the little

  639. messes,

  640. and all of that.

  641. Let me just

  642. encourage you

  643. that you are

  644. investing in the

  645. future of your

  646. children.

  647. What a valuable,

  648. valuable task.

  649. I remind Sam

  650. often,

  651. she reminds me

  652. at times,

  653. that we're not

  654. raising boys,

  655. we're raising men.

  656. There's going to be

  657. an end product

  658. that we're producing.

  659. And as they're

  660. arrows in my

  661. quiver,

  662. I want them to be

  663. perfect and straight,

  664. that they'll hit

  665. their mark.

  666. Where God

  667. intends for them

  668. to go.

  669. There's a greater

  670. thing at play

  671. in the day in

  672. and the day out

  673. of the spit up

  674. and the messes.

  675. Learn to worship

  676. God in the mundane.

  677. Your task

  678. is so

  679. important.

  680. God has

  681. designed you

  682. in His

  683. image,

  684. in His image

  685. to be caretakers

  686. of the home.

  687. It's valuable,

  688. it's a beautiful

  689. task.

  690. It's something

  691. that should be

  692. revered

  693. amongst us.

  694. Speaking of

  695. the excellent

  696. wife,

  697. in Proverbs 31,

  698. out of 22

  699. verses,

  700. 9 refer

  701. directly to

  702. the excellent

  703. wife's work

  704. in the home.

  705. A substantial

  706. amount of them

  707. refer to

  708. this work.

  709. It is a

  710. precious one.

  711. In a letter

  712. to Ann

  713. Landers,

  714. I'm going to

  715. date myself,

  716. I had no idea

  717. who Ann

  718. Landers is.

  719. I don't know

  720. if any of you

  721. know who

  722. Ann Landers

  723. was.

  724. It was a

  725. pen name

  726. for a

  727. Chicago Sun

  728. Times

  729. advice

  730. columnist.

  731. This is a

  732. letter from

  733. 1988.

  734. I found it

  735. someplace else

  736. in another

  737. sermon.

  738. But this

  739. woman wrote

  740. this to

  741. Ann Landers.

  742. I'm so

  743. tired of

  744. all those

  745. ignorant

  746. people who

  747. come up to

  748. my husband

  749. and ask him

  750. if his wife

  751. has a full

  752. time job

  753. or if

  754. she's

  755. just a

  756. housewife.

  757. Here's my

  758. job description.

  759. I'm a

  760. wife,

  761. mother,

  762. friend,

  763. confidant,

  764. personal

  765. advisor,

  766. lover,

  767. referee,

  768. peacemaker,

  769. housekeeper,

  770. laundress,

  771. chauffeur,

  772. interior

  773. decorator,

  774. gardener,

  775. painter,

  776. wallpaper,

  777. remember I was

  778. in 88,

  779. dog groomer,

  780. veterinarian,

  781. manicurist,

  782. barber,

  783. seamstress,

  784. appointment

  785. manager,

  786. financial

  787. planner,

  788. bookkeeper,

  789. money manager,

  790. personal

  791. secretary,

  792. teacher,

  793. disciplinarian,

  794. entertainer,

  795. psychoanalyst,

  796. nurse,

  797. diagnostician,

  798. public relations

  799. expert,

  800. dietician and

  801. nutritionist,

  802. baker,

  803. chef,

  804. fashion coordinator

  805. and letter

  806. writer for both

  807. sides of the

  808. family.

  809. I'm also a

  810. travel agent,

  811. speech therapist,

  812. plumber and

  813. automobile maintenance

  814. and repair

  815. expert.

  816. From the

  817. studies done,

  818. and there's

  819. been a recent

  820. Facebook post

  821. going around,

  822. some of you

  823. may have seen

  824. where the guy

  825. writes,

  826. I can't afford

  827. my wife,

  828. from the

  829. studies done,

  830. it would cost

  831. more than

  832. 75,000 a

  833. year to

  834. replace me.

  835. It took time

  836. out of my

  837. busy day to

  838. write this

  839. letter,

  840. Anne,

  841. because there

  842. are still

  843. ignorant

  844. people who

  845. believe a

  846. housewife is

  847. nothing more

  848. than a

  849. babysitter who

  850. sits on her

  851. behind,

  852. also a

  853. 1988 word,

  854. I think,

  855. all day and

  856. looks at

  857. soap operas.

  858. And all of

  859. this was found

  860. in a book by

  861. Linda Weber

  862. from Focus on

  863. the Family

  864. called Mom,

  865. You're

  866. incredible.

  867. You ladies do

  868. a massive

  869. amount of

  870. work.

  871. Guys,

  872. stay at home

  873. for two

  874. days with

  875. no help

  876. from your

  877. wife and

  878. you'll

  879. appreciate her

  880. to a very,

  881. very high

  882. degree.

  883. So this

  884. responsibility

  885. of raising

  886. up and

  887. instructing in

  888. the fear of

  889. the Lord is

  890. the responsibility

  891. of fathers

  892. and mothers.

  893. Ladies,

  894. thank you for

  895. your hard

  896. work in

  897. this regard.

  898. Fifthly,

  899. children are

  900. responsible for

  901. submission to

  902. this instruction.

  903. And this

  904. includes both

  905. at home and

  906. away from

  907. home.

  908. See the words

  909. in verse 8,

  910. Hear my son

  911. your father's

  912. instruction.

  913. Present,

  914. you're here.

  915. Hear my

  916. instruction.

  917. Use my

  918. instruction.

  919. And do not

  920. forsake your

  921. mother's teaching.

  922. When you leave

  923. our presence,

  924. when you go

  925. out into the

  926. world,

  927. college students,

  928. when you walk

  929. away and you're

  930. in a different

  931. place living on

  932. your own,

  933. do not forsake

  934. your mother's

  935. teaching.

  936. These people

  937. have been placed

  938. over you by

  939. God to help

  940. you in this

  941. life.

  942. One commentator

  943. has said of

  944. verses 7-9,

  945. verses 7-9 may

  946. be regarded as

  947. a summary statement

  948. of the principle

  949. on which the

  950. whole book of

  951. Proverbs is

  952. based,

  953. and of the

  954. duty which it

  955. enjoins.

  956. The principle

  957. is that true

  958. wisdom is based

  959. on the fear

  960. of God,

  961. and the duty

  962. is to listen

  963. to parental

  964. instruction.

  965. That this

  966. proper worship,

  967. the true

  968. wisdom,

  969. is based on

  970. the fear of

  971. God.

  972. And how

  973. ought we to

  974. gain that

  975. wisdom?

  976. Listen to

  977. your parents.

  978. God finds

  979. this so

  980. important that

  981. it is part of

  982. his moral

  983. law.

  984. Exodus 20-12,

  985. honor your

  986. father and

  987. your mother.

  988. Paul states

  989. it again,

  990. Ephesians 6-1.

  991. Children, you

  992. should be

  993. familiar with

  994. this one.

  995. Children,

  996. obey your

  997. parents and

  998. the Lord,

  999. for this

  1000. is right.

  1001. That is,

  1002. it is what

  1003. is proper

  1004. for children

  1005. to do.

  1006. Thomas Watts,

  1007. a 17th century

  1008. English Puritan,

  1009. stated that

  1010. fear of the

  1011. Lord leads

  1012. to industry.

  1013. And I like

  1014. that.

  1015. would have

  1016. to come

  1017. from a

  1018. 17th century

  1019. Puritan to

  1020. use that

  1021. type of

  1022. language.

  1023. But that

  1024. is that

  1025. it leads

  1026. to action.

  1027. That if

  1028. we're going

  1029. to properly

  1030. worship God,

  1031. our parents

  1032. should have

  1033. led us to

  1034. a fear of

  1035. God.

  1036. But even

  1037. if they

  1038. didn't,

  1039. a fear of

  1040. God ought

  1041. to lead

  1042. us to

  1043. being obedient

  1044. and listening

  1045. to our

  1046. parents'

  1047. instruction.

  1048. Now,

  1049. I recognize

  1050. that many

  1051. of us

  1052. don't have

  1053. perfect

  1054. parents.

  1055. And the

  1056. reality of

  1057. it is that

  1058. none of

  1059. us have

  1060. perfect

  1061. parents.

  1062. Because all

  1063. of our

  1064. parents are

  1065. dealing with

  1066. sin in

  1067. their own

  1068. lives.

  1069. Most,

  1070. if not all,

  1071. of our

  1072. parents have

  1073. really tried.

  1074. And they've

  1075. really done

  1076. their very

  1077. best.

  1078. I know a

  1079. lot of you

  1080. struggle with

  1081. very,

  1082. very difficult

  1083. parents.

  1084. Consider for

  1085. a moment who

  1086. Solomon's parents

  1087. were.

  1088. David,

  1089. who certainly

  1090. possessed

  1091. much wisdom,

  1092. and his

  1093. mother was

  1094. Bathsheba.

  1095. We don't

  1096. know a

  1097. whole lot

  1098. about

  1099. Bathsheba,

  1100. except that

  1101. she was

  1102. beautiful.

  1103. But these

  1104. two came

  1105. together under

  1106. a messy,

  1107. messy

  1108. circumstance.

  1109. There had

  1110. to have

  1111. been some

  1112. challenges in

  1113. their marriage.

  1114. A marriage

  1115. that began

  1116. with adultery

  1117. and murder

  1118. on David's

  1119. heart.

  1120. But yet,

  1121. Solomon says,

  1122. listen to

  1123. the instruction

  1124. of your

  1125. parents.

  1126. The same

  1127. applies.

  1128. Provided that

  1129. their instruction

  1130. does not

  1131. oppose the

  1132. command of

  1133. God.

  1134. Your parents

  1135. have wisdom

  1136. for you

  1137. even if

  1138. they're not

  1139. followers of

  1140. Jesus Christ.

  1141. Remember that

  1142. Proverbs is

  1143. aimed at

  1144. helping us

  1145. walk wisely

  1146. in this

  1147. world.

  1148. Ultimately

  1149. aimed at

  1150. toward

  1151. culminating with

  1152. the fear of

  1153. the Lord,

  1154. the glory of

  1155. God.

  1156. This is the

  1157. direction that

  1158. it's taking

  1159. us in,

  1160. but there are

  1161. still good

  1162. and wise

  1163. things that

  1164. we can learn

  1165. from our

  1166. parents.

  1167. Let me

  1168. encourage you

  1169. if you have

  1170. difficult

  1171. parents,

  1172. to find

  1173. those things

  1174. that they

  1175. are good

  1176. at,

  1177. that they

  1178. know to

  1179. be true.

  1180. Respect

  1181. your parents

  1182. and listen

  1183. to them.

  1184. Remember

  1185. that God

  1186. gave you

  1187. your

  1188. parents.

  1189. Recognize,

  1190. embrace

  1191. His

  1192. sovereignty.

  1193. He gave

  1194. them to

  1195. you.

  1196. I love

  1197. Romans 8.

  1198. 28.

  1199. It should

  1200. be so

  1201. familiar

  1202. to you.

  1203. You

  1204. suffer

  1205. in this

  1206. world,

  1207. and we

  1208. know

  1209. that for

  1210. those who

  1211. love God,

  1212. all things,

  1213. including

  1214. parents,

  1215. difficult

  1216. parent

  1217. situations,

  1218. work

  1219. together

  1220. for good

  1221. for those

  1222. who are

  1223. called

  1224. according

  1225. to His

  1226. purpose.

  1227. God

  1228. knew

  1229. the parents

  1230. you

  1231. needed

  1232. to gain

  1233. the best

  1234. for you,

  1235. the greatest

  1236. for you.

  1237. He knew

  1238. the parents

  1239. that were

  1240. necessary

  1241. for that

  1242. to take

  1243. place.

  1244. God

  1245. is using

  1246. even the

  1247. sins

  1248. of our

  1249. parents

  1250. to bring

  1251. us

  1252. to Him.

  1253. I want

  1254. to read

  1255. to you

  1256. a poem

  1257. as an

  1258. encouragement

  1259. to that

  1260. end by

  1261. John

  1262. Piper

  1263. called

  1264. On

  1265. Grace.

  1266. It speaks

  1267. to this

  1268. very

  1269. thing.

  1270. He

  1271. writes,

  1272. Some

  1273. people

  1274. tell me

  1275. I was

  1276. free

  1277. when I

  1278. believed

  1279. in

  1280. Christ,

  1281. and by

  1282. my

  1283. power

  1284. got

  1285. victory

  1286. when

  1287. all

  1288. the

  1289. world

  1290. enticed.

  1291. I

  1292. think

  1293. they

  1294. did

  1295. not

  1296. know

  1297. my

  1298. heart

  1299. nor

  1300. theirs.

  1301. Let

  1302. it

  1303. be

  1304. said

  1305. that

  1306. I

  1307. for

  1308. one

  1309. had

  1310. sought

  1311. no

  1312. part

  1313. in

  1314. rising

  1315. from

  1316. the

  1317. dead.

  1318. They

  1319. wonder

  1320. at

  1321. the

  1322. sovereign

  1323. rights

  1324. that

  1325. I

  1326. allow

  1327. my

  1328. king

  1329. and

  1330. puzzle

  1331. at

  1332. the

  1333. worship

  1334. heights

  1335. to

  1336. which

  1337. his

  1338. rule

  1339. gives

  1340. wing.

  1341. But

  1342. I

  1343. will

  1344. rest

  1345. God's

  1346. grace

  1347. today

  1348. on

  1349. this

  1350. I

  1351. need

  1352. no

  1353. other.

  1354. He

  1355. did

  1356. not

  1357. give

  1358. any

  1359. say

  1360. but

  1361. chose

  1362. for

  1363. me

  1364. my

  1365. mother.

  1366. My

  1367. reading at

  1368. the beginning

  1369. of this

  1370. morning

  1371. in Psalm

  1372. 139

  1373. had this

  1374. in mind

  1375. God's

  1376. personal

  1377. care

  1378. for you

  1379. includes

  1380. the grace

  1381. of your

  1382. parents

  1383. being given

  1384. to you.

  1385. So the

  1386. family is an

  1387. institution of

  1388. God's making

  1389. meant to be a

  1390. school

  1391. with the

  1392. object of

  1393. the instruction

  1394. of that family

  1395. aimed at the

  1396. fear of the

  1397. Lord.

  1398. The

  1399. responsibility of

  1400. fathers and

  1401. mothers and

  1402. of children to

  1403. listen to it

  1404. and obey

  1405. it.

  1406. And then

  1407. sixthly and

  1408. lastly,

  1409. last observation

  1410. from the

  1411. text.

  1412. There is a

  1413. promise given

  1414. in this

  1415. instruction

  1416. is submitted

  1417. to.

  1418. There is a

  1419. promise given

  1420. if this

  1421. instruction

  1422. is submitted

  1423. to.

  1424. Verse 9

  1425. For they are a

  1426. graceful

  1427. garland for

  1428. your head

  1429. and pendants

  1430. for your neck.

  1431. They are a

  1432. graceful garland

  1433. for your head

  1434. and pendants

  1435. for your neck.

  1436. These were

  1437. signs of

  1438. victory.

  1439. If a race

  1440. was won

  1441. or a battle

  1442. was conquered,

  1443. these were

  1444. signs of

  1445. victory of

  1446. the day.

  1447. The rest of

  1448. Ephesians 6

  1449. after verse 1

  1450. beginning in

  1451. verse 2

  1452. and 3,

  1453. this is Paul's

  1454. commentary on

  1455. Exodus 20

  1456. 12.

  1457. He says,

  1458. Honor your

  1459. father and

  1460. mother.

  1461. This is the

  1462. first commandment

  1463. with a promise

  1464. that it may

  1465. go well with

  1466. you and

  1467. that you

  1468. may live

  1469. long in

  1470. the land.

  1471. There were

  1472. many promises

  1473. given along

  1474. with the

  1475. commandment,

  1476. but later on

  1477. in the text,

  1478. this is the

  1479. first one as

  1480. God gave to

  1481. Moses the

  1482. Ten Commandments,

  1483. the moral law

  1484. that contained in

  1485. the actual

  1486. commandment a

  1487. promise that it

  1488. may go well

  1489. with you and

  1490. that you may

  1491. live long in

  1492. the land.

  1493. Do you

  1494. remember the

  1495. Proverbs I

  1496. read previously?

  1497. Proverbs 14

  1498. 26 and 27?

  1499. In the fear

  1500. of the Lord

  1501. one has strong

  1502. confidence and

  1503. his children will

  1504. have a refuge.

  1505. The fear of the

  1506. Lord is a

  1507. fountain of

  1508. life that one

  1509. may turn away

  1510. from the snares

  1511. of death.

  1512. In Proverbs 19

  1513. 23,

  1514. the fear of the

  1515. Lord leads to

  1516. life and whoever

  1517. has it rests

  1518. satisfied.

  1519. He will not be

  1520. visited by

  1521. harm.

  1522. This is the

  1523. wreath on your

  1524. head.

  1525. And the

  1526. ornament on

  1527. your neck for

  1528. embracing the

  1529. fear of the

  1530. Lord that your

  1531. mother and

  1532. father taught

  1533. you.

  1534. A fountain of

  1535. life and

  1536. strong confidence

  1537. and deep

  1538. satisfaction.

  1539. And so the

  1540. family was

  1541. created by

  1542. God and

  1543. ultimately for

  1544. God.

  1545. He designed

  1546. that the

  1547. family should

  1548. be a school

  1549. of instruction

  1550. and godliness.

  1551. Fathers and

  1552. mothers instructing

  1553. their children in

  1554. the ways of the

  1555. Lord so that the

  1556. children will

  1557. have Godward

  1558. lives with a

  1559. sure eternal

  1560. confidence.

  1561. Whether or not

  1562. our families have

  1563. been a perfect

  1564. representation of

  1565. God's intent and

  1566. purpose, we ought

  1567. to always recognize

  1568. that He is good

  1569. and given our

  1570. particular families

  1571. to us for our

  1572. good.

  1573. fathers and

  1574. mothers, let us

  1575. strive together.

  1576. It's one of the

  1577. great graces of the

  1578. church that we can

  1579. work together and

  1580. encourage one another

  1581. and support one

  1582. another in this

  1583. endeavor.

  1584. Let us strive

  1585. together to fulfill

  1586. the high calling

  1587. that God has placed

  1588. on our lives to

  1589. instruct our

  1590. children and let us

  1591. praise God that He

  1592. provides for all

  1593. that He commands.

  1594. Let's pray together.

  1595. Let us pray together.
