  1. And this week we will look at Paul's further explanation of the doctrine of reconciliation.

  2. ! But we should remember first, recall that Paul did not establish the church at Colossae.

  3. ! He was not the one who preached the gospel first to them and set up the church there.

  4. It was likely established by Epaphras, who was with Paul in Rome at the writing of this letter,

  5. and had probably traveled there to inform Paul of some heresy that was encircling and within the church at Colossae.

  6. We do not know the exact nature of this heresy, but Paul's letter gives us some clues to it as it is heavily doctrinal,

  7. as most of his writing tends to be.

  8. But what he's doing here is he's trying to establish proper doctrine amongst the church in Colossae.

  9. Paul's letter to the Colossians is very timely for our day,

  10. as there exists today much error encircling and within the church in America.

  11. One particularly troubling error concerns the means and nature of salvation.

  12. You have heard me say before, and I try not to be this person.

  13. I want to be a glass half full kind of a person.

  14. I'm definitely glass half empty or maybe 10% full kind of a person.

  15. But I think with some accuracy that this comment is true that most people who think they're followers of Jesus Christ,

  16. who sit this morning in Sunday services, are not.

  17. They have not been regenerate.

  18. They've had a false gospel preached to them, and they have believed that false gospel,

  19. and that are being led astray as such.

  20. Listen to what the Scriptures have to say concerning this.

  21. You can mark Colossians.

  22. I invite you, though, to turn to the book of Matthew 13 with me.

  23. I'm normally not much for long intros, but this morning we'll have one.

  24. Matthew 13.

  25. I'll begin reading in verse 24.

  26. For Jesus put another parable before them, saying,

  27. The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a man who sowed good seed in his field.

  28. But while his men were sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds or tares among the wheat and went away.

  29. So when the plants came up and bore grain, then the weeds appeared also.

  30. And the servants of the master of the house came and said to him,

  31. Master, did you not sow good seed in your field?

  32. How then does it have weeds?

  33. He said to them,

  34. An enemy has done this.

  35. So the servant said to him,

  36. Then do you want us to go and gather them?

  37. But he said,

  38. No, lest in gathering the weeds you root up the wheat along with them.

  39. Let both grow together until the harvest.

  40. And at harvest time I will tell the reapers,

  41. Gather the weeds first and bind them in bundles to be burned,

  42. And gather the wheat into my barn.

  43. And this parable was meant to teach the disciples that this will be the nature of the church.

  44. There will be false converts amongst us.

  45. What he's trying to encourage them with is that this will one day be sorted out.

  46. Final judgment will sort out who is truly in Christ and who is not in Christ.

  47. This is meant to be a comfort to them.

  48. However, this wheat and tare analogy,

  49. The wheat would have been much more plentiful in this field.

  50. It ought not be accepted on our part,

  51. A, well, that's the way it's going to be sort of mentality.

  52. Because in other places we're warned against this type of thing.

  53. Turn a couple pages back to Matthew chapter 7.

    Matthew 7 chapter mention

  54. In the conclusion of what we call the Sermon on the Mount,

  55. Beginning in verse 21, Jesus says,

  56. Not everyone who says to me,

  57. Lord, Lord, will enter the kingdom of heaven,

  58. But the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.

  59. He's saying, not just the one who gives me lip service,

  60. But the one who is obedient to the will of the Father.

  61. Verse 22,

  62. On that day many will say to me,

  63. Lord, Lord, do we not prophesy in Your name,

  64. And cast out demons in Your name,

  65. And do many mighty works in Your name?

  66. Fantastic things to be witnessed.

  67. Jesus says in verse 23,

  68. And then I will declare to them,

  69. I never knew you.

  70. Depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.

  71. This is a warning against this type of apostasy.

  72. Sitting in amongst churches,

  73. Calling yourself a disciple of Jesus Christ,

  74. And yet not being so.

  75. Listen to what Dr. Jim Binney wrote in Issues of the Heart

  76. Concerning the State of the Church.

  77. He writes, and I quote,

  78. Dr. Rod Bell,

  79. President of the Fundamental Baptist Fellowship of America,

  80. Estimates that 50% of church people are without Christ.

  81. His estimate concurs with that of Bob Jones Sr.

  82. In the 1940s, he also fixed the estimate at 50%.

  83. Dr. B.R. Lakin estimated that 75% are lost.

  84. W.A. Criswell would be surprised to see

  85. Even 25% of his church members in heaven.

  86. Dr. Bob Gray,

  87. Longtime pastor of the prestigious Trinity Baptist Church of Jacksonville, Florida,

  88. Once said that probably 75% of those he baptized were not saved.

  89. Billy Graham puts the figure at 85%,

  90. While A.W. Tozer and Southern Baptist consultant Jim Eliff raise it to 90%.

  91. These are shocking figures, to be sure, but not surprising.

  92. Many such lost people find their way into the roles of the church

  93. through evangelism methods that are less than thorough.

  94. In a country boasting of coast-to-coast Christianity

  95. with thousands of church buildings and millions of members,

  96. it is hard to realize the depth of the problem.

  97. The reason that so many who think they are saved may actually be lost

  98. is traceable to a misunderstanding about the means of salvation.

  99. Many religious people are misled into believing they are genuine Christians

  100. because of some external criteria.

  101. This may be the form of their prayer at the time of salvation.

  102. It can also include a dependence upon feelings going forward at a public meeting

  103. or meeting someone's expectations in any regard about the means of salvation.

  104. The Bible warns against dependency upon the wrong things for salvation.

  105. End quote.

  106. This is a serious issue before us.

  107. And so, Paul sets right their understanding and ours

  108. concerning the means and nature of salvation

  109. by teaching on the doctrine of reconciliation.

  110. So back in Colossians 1, if you're not already there.

  111. It's our text for today, beginning in verse 21.

  112. And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds,

  113. he has now reconciled in his body of flesh by his death

  114. in order to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before him.

  115. If indeed you continue in the faith, stable and steadfast,

  116. not shifting from the hope of the gospel that you heard,

  117. which has been proclaimed in all creation under heaven,

  118. and of which I, Paul, became a minister.

  119. This is God's word to us.

  120. It was written for his glory and our good.

  121. We would all do well to listen to it in order to believe its promises

  122. and obey its commands.

  123. Now, there are five very important words used in the New Testament

  124. to speak of salvation.

  125. The Scriptures tell us that we are justified.

  126. We stand before God guilty and condemned or declared righteous.

  127. We are redeemed.

  128. We stand before God as a slave, but we are granted freedom.

  129. We are forgiven.

  130. We stand before God as a debtor, but the debt is paid and forgotten.

  131. We are adopted.

  132. We stand before God as a stranger, but are made a son.

  133. But perhaps the most rich of all these explanations is that of reconciliation.

  134. We are reconciled if we are in Christ.

  135. We once stood before God as his enemies, but we are made his friends.

  136. The Greek word for reconcile means literally to change in relationship.

  137. Our status with God Almighty has been changed if we are found in Christ.

  138. It is of great importance that we rightly understand the means and nature of our salvation.

  139. The eternal state of our souls and of those who we minister to depend upon it.

  140. This is an eternal, weighty matter before us.

  141. And as such, I believe that the proper application of this text,

  142. which I normally give to you at the end of the sermon, should be given to you now.

  143. I want you to think with these filters on through what we're going to study together.

  144. So the application is to firstly, be sure of your reconciliation.

  145. Know for a fact this morning that you are eternally secure.

  146. That you have placed believing faith in the person and work of Jesus Christ.

  147. That God has in fact changed your heart.

  148. Called you a friend.

  149. Made you his son.

  150. That you have been saved from the wrath to come.

  151. Secondly, contend for the faith.

  152. The last half of Jude verse 3 says,

  153. Contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints.

  154. In the name of the truth, so many are being led astray.

  155. They're hearing this is what it looks like to follow Jesus Christ.

  156. And they're being taken down a wide path.

  157. We must warn them to flee from the wrath to come.

  158. We must preach a pure gospel.

  159. That people may believe and be saved.

  160. Even those who already think that they are.

  161. And so with those filters on, with those applications,

  162. we'll study our text together in the following outline.

  163. And I'll give this to you again as we work through.

  164. But firstly, the need for reconciliation.

  165. Second, the means of reconciliation.

  166. Third, the goal of reconciliation.

  167. And fourth, the evidence of reconciliation.

  168. It is of great importance we rightly understand the means and nature of salvation.

  169. And firstly, we need to look at the need for reconciliation.

  170. Verse 21 says,

  171. We once were separated from God because of who we once were if we're found in Christ.

  172. There are many people and issues in our time that seek to divide humanity for a variety of criteria.

  173. Gender, race, nationality, political party.

  174. Some of these are helpful for certain conversations, to be sure.

  175. I'm not discrediting them altogether.

  176. But the Bible makes the most helpful distinction to aid us in understanding the world,

  177. its nature, and the part that we play in it.

  178. That distinction is whether or not we are a people in fellowship with God or not in fellowship with God.

  179. Where is our status?

  180. One of two most important.

  181. We're saved or we're lost.

  182. There are many other descriptors for these two categories.

  183. Here with the doctrine of reconciliation,

  184. you're either God's enemy or you're reconciled to Him as His friend.

  185. Your relationship has been made right once again.

  186. And Paul gives some understanding of what this without God,

  187. this cut off from fellowship with Him relation looks like.

  188. He uses the terms alienated, hostile in mind, doing evil deeds.

  189. To be alienated means to be cut off, to be separated or estranged from.

  190. The Colossians and all of humanity are estranged from God apart from Christ.

  191. The metanarrative of humanity.

  192. We all share this problem apart from the solution of Jesus Christ.

  193. Paul writes elsewhere, like Ephesians 2.12 of this,

  194. Remember that you were at that time separated from Christ.

  195. Alienated from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers to the covenants of promise.

  196. Having no hope and without God in the world.

  197. The creation separated eternally from its Creator.

  198. We're also hostile in mind,

  199. which means to be hateful toward God in thought and attitude.

  200. It's not just that we are not particularly concerned with who God is and His ways,

  201. but that if we're not found in Christ,

  202. we are actually hateful toward God in our thoughts and our attitudes.

  203. The Colossians and all humanity, apart from Christ,

  204. hate God and His holy standards,

  205. and express so by doing evil deeds.

  206. That is the outcome of hearts that are evil and bent towards God.

  207. Living in contradiction to God and His holy standards.

  208. John 3.19-20 says,

  209. People loved the darkness rather than the light,

  210. because their works were evil.

  211. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light,

  212. and does not come to the light,

  213. lest his works should be exposed.

  214. So there's these important two distinctions.

  215. Without Christ, we are cut off,

  216. separated from, estranged from God.

  217. We have no point and purpose in our life

  218. because we cannot properly worship the Creator.

  219. We cannot do the thing we were created to do.

  220. This is the bad news of this condition.

  221. People are either in fellowship with God or they are not.

  222. It's bad news, beloved.

  223. To not be reconciled to God is bad news

  224. because God hates sinners.

  225. And yes, you heard me right.

  226. God hates sinners.

  227. His wrath burns white hot

  228. against those who are His enemy.

  229. I do not want to be on God's bad side

  230. on the day of judgment.

  231. God hates sinners.

  232. Psalm 5, 5 and 6.

  233. Listen carefully.

  234. This is the holy writ.

  235. The boastful shall not stand before your eyes.

  236. You hate all evildoers.

  237. You destroy those who speak lies.

  238. The Lord abhors the bloodthirsty

  239. and deceitful man.

  240. In the book of Psalms alone,

  241. 14 times in the first 50 Psalms,

  242. it is stated that God hates sinners.

  243. God is also love.

  244. And He is perfectly love.

  245. One time, a young lady asked Charles Spurgeon

  246. how to reconcile the doctrines

  247. of the sovereignty of God

  248. and the responsibility of man.

  249. And his response was,

  250. why would we need to reconcile

  251. two doctrines that are friends?

  252. The same could be said here as well.

  253. There's no real need for reconciliation

  254. between the two.

  255. God is also love.

  256. And as such,

  257. He has made a way

  258. for our reconciliation in Christ.

  259. He has made a way

  260. to extend His love to humanity.

  261. But you must know,

  262. if you're not found in Christ,

  263. God's graciousness in a particular way

  264. is not extended to you.

  265. In a general way, it is

  266. because you're still alive.

  267. You haven't already faced His wrath.

  268. But in a particular way,

  269. His love has not yet been received

  270. because it must be received

  271. in Christ.

  272. If you're apart from Christ,

  273. God hates you.

  274. You have to hear it.

  275. People want to make our sin

  276. exterior to us, right?

  277. The adage, the cliché term.

  278. God doesn't hate sinners.

  279. He hates their sin.

  280. But if we are apart from Christ,

  281. the sin that we do is who we are.

  282. It's an outflow of who we are.

  283. We are evil.

  284. We are His enemies, right?

  285. We with our actions say to Him,

  286. I hate you and I hate your ways.

  287. And God in turn says,

  288. likewise.

  289. And one day I will punish

  290. and destroy you for eternity.

  291. This is the judgment of God for sin.

  292. We need to take sin seriously.

  293. This false gospel

  294. creates God's love

  295. and never talks about

  296. wrath and the consequence of sin

  297. is what caused so many people

  298. to be led astray.

  299. The beginning of knowledge?

  300. Fear of the Lord.

  301. That we may know

  302. that He will not tolerate

  303. those who will not worship Him.

  304. It is of great importance

  305. that we rightly understand

  306. the means and nature

  307. of our salvation.

  308. We have a need

  309. for reconciliation.

  310. We have a means

  311. of reconciliation.

  312. God's love

  313. graciously extended

  314. to us

  315. in the person and work

  316. of Jesus Christ.

  317. The fear of God

  318. enters into your heart.

  319. Look to the cross

  320. and see the love

  321. of God

  322. for you.

  323. Many people today

  324. believe that you must

  325. simply believe

  326. believe in something.

  327. That right motivation

  328. and sincerity

  329. are the proper measure

  330. of that belief.

  331. And that belief itself

  332. in some way

  333. is salvific.

  334. You talk to many people today

  335. and they're spiritual people

  336. and they believe

  337. that they're good people.

  338. And the measure

  339. of that goodness

  340. is found in the sincerity

  341. of those affection.

  342. But the road to hell

  343. is paved

  344. with good intentions.

  345. The Bible

  346. is constantly

  347. and consistently

  348. stressing

  349. the proper

  350. object

  351. of belief.

  352. Belief itself

  353. is not enough.

  354. You can believe

  355. that a rock

  356. will save me

  357. from my sin.

  358. But it has no benefit

  359. to me.

  360. There's no power

  361. in the rock.

  362. We must have

  363. the proper

  364. object

  365. of belief.

  366. Jesus Christ

  367. and His sacrificial

  368. work on the cross.

  369. The first part

  370. of verse 22

  371. says,

  372. He, being Christ,

  373. has now reconciled

  374. in His body

  375. of flesh

  376. by His death.

  377. If we have believed

  378. in Him,

  379. He is reconciled

  380. in His body

  381. of flesh

  382. by His death.

  383. Us to God

  384. and God

  385. to us.

  386. The sacrificial system,

  387. the Old Testament

  388. sacrificial system

  389. was all meant

  390. to prefigure

  391. the ultimate

  392. sacrifice

  393. of Jesus Christ.

  394. The way in which

  395. animals were being

  396. slaughtered.

  397. The temple worship

  398. was constant.

  399. It was ongoing.

  400. There was always

  401. a flow of blood

  402. coming from the temple

  403. because of the sins

  404. of Israel.

  405. It was meant

  406. to show us

  407. the perfect sacrifice.

  408. Prefigure

  409. point to

  410. the one

  411. in whom

  412. we believe.

  413. Do you think

  414. that God

  415. doesn't hate sinners?

  416. You need to listen

  417. to Isaiah 53,

  418. 5-7.

  419. Consider the way

  420. in which God

  421. turned His back

  422. on Christ,

  423. His Son,

  424. perfect in every way

  425. without sin,

  426. laid on Him

  427. the sins of His people

  428. and poured His wrath

  429. out on Him.

  430. Hated Him

  431. to death.

  432. Isaiah 53,

  433. 5-7.

  434. But He was pierced

  435. for our transgressions.

  436. He was crushed

  437. for our iniquities.

  438. Upon Him

  439. was the chastisement

  440. that brought us peace

  441. and with His wounds

  442. we are healed.

  443. All like sheep

  444. have gone astray,

  445. every one of us.

  446. We all need reconciliation.

  447. We have turned

  448. everyone

  449. to His own way

  450. and the Lord

  451. has laid on Him

  452. the iniquity

  453. of us all.

  454. He was oppressed

  455. and He was afflicted

  456. yet He opened

  457. not His mouth

  458. like a lamb

  459. that is led

  460. to the slaughter

  461. and like a sheep

  462. that before it

  463. shears a silence

  464. so He opened

  465. not His mouth.

  466. Beloved,

  467. we have to understand

  468. that Jesus Christ

  469. is the means

  470. of reconciliation.

  471. He is the only

  472. means of reconciliation.

  473. His perfect life

  474. imputed to us

  475. that we may be found

  476. righteous in Him

  477. and His bearing

  478. of our sin

  479. on the cross

  480. that we would be

  481. forgiven

  482. of those sins.

  483. Apart from that,

  484. the wrath

  485. that was poured out

  486. on Jesus Christ

  487. will one day

  488. be poured out

  489. on you.

  490. If Christ

  491. is not born

  492. your sin

  493. because you have not

  494. placed believing faith

  495. in Him,

  496. then it will be

  497. one day

  498. poured out on you

  499. for eternity.

  500. Christ drank up

  501. the wrath of God

  502. for the people

  503. of the church

  504. for all eternity.

  505. And then He said

  506. it is finished.

  507. And He sat down

  508. at the right hand

  509. of the Father.

  510. The author of Hebrews

  511. in chapter 13,

  512. 11, and 12

  513. reiterates this point.

  514. For the bodies

  515. of those animals

  516. whose blood

  517. is brought

  518. into the holy places

  519. by the high priest

  520. as a sacrifice

  521. for sin

  522. are burned

  523. outside the camp.

  524. These animals

  525. that were slaughtered

  526. for the sins of Israel

  527. burned outside the camp.

  528. So Jesus also suffered

  529. outside the gate

  530. in order to sanctify

  531. the people

  532. through His own blood.

  533. We've been reconciled

  534. in His body of flesh

  535. by His death.

  536. Because of that work,

  537. we have been reconciled.

  538. Because of His activity

  539. and His accomplishment

  540. on the cross,

  541. we can be,

  542. I hope,

  543. have been reconciled.

  544. That we might join

  545. with the writers

  546. of the New Testament.

  547. Romans 5, 11,

  548. we also rejoice in God

  549. through our Lord Jesus Christ

  550. through whom we have now

  551. received reconciliation.

  552. Through Jesus.

  553. What does that mean?

  554. John 14, 6,

  555. Jesus said to Him,

  556. I am the way

  557. and the truth

  558. and the life.

  559. No one comes to the Father

  560. except through Me.

  561. Ephesians 2, 8,

  562. for by grace

  563. you have been saved

  564. through faith.

  565. Faith

  566. in the person

  567. and the work

  568. of Jesus Christ.

  569. Rightly setting our belief

  570. on the proper object.

  571. This is the way

  572. that we are reconciled

  573. through Jesus Christ.

  574. Ephesians 2, 8,

  575. goes on to say,

  576. and this is not

  577. your own doing.

  578. It is the gift of God.

  579. Charles Spurgeon said,

  580. reconciliation of man

  581. to his Maker

  582. is never achieved

  583. by man,

  584. but is the work of God

  585. from first to last.

  586. And to God

  587. must be all the glory.

  588. We've got to get this right.

  589. It's of great importance

  590. we rightly understand

  591. the means and nature

  592. of our salvation.

  593. We have a need

  594. for reconciliation.

  595. Jesus Christ

  596. is the means

  597. of that reconciliation.

  598. And there's a goal in mind.

  599. There's a goal

  600. of reconciliation.

  601. The last part of verse 22.

  602. In order

  603. that to present

  604. you holy

  605. and blameless

  606. and above reproach

  607. before Him.

  608. The right state

  609. that we must be in

  610. to enter into

  611. the presence of God.

  612. Set apart

  613. from sin.

  614. Taken away from it.

  615. Sanctified

  616. from sin.

  617. To present you

  618. holy and blameless

  619. and above reproach.

  620. All of these

  621. have both

  622. present

  623. and future

  624. implications.

  625. They are realities

  626. for this life

  627. and

  628. in the hereafter.

  629. Paul says

  630. that if we are

  631. reconciled to God,

  632. we are

  633. holy,

  634. separated from sin

  635. and set apart

  636. to God.

  637. As a result

  638. of faith

  639. in Jesus Christ,

  640. God sees

  641. Christians

  642. as united

  643. with Christ

  644. in His holiness.

  645. This is that

  646. imputed righteousness.

  647. Jesus'

  648. perfect life

  649. given to us

  650. by faith.

  651. Ephesians 1.4

  652. states that

  653. God chose us

  654. in Christ

  655. before the foundation

  656. of the world

  657. that we should be

  658. holy and blameless

  659. before Him.

  660. In 2 Corinthians 5.21

  661. it says,

  662. For our sake

  663. He, being God,

  664. made Him, being Christ,

  665. to be sin

  666. who knew no sin,

  667. gave our sin

  668. to Jesus

  669. so that in Him

  670. we might become

  671. the righteousness

  672. of God.

  673. So that in Christ

  674. we are given

  675. Christ's righteousness.

  676. This is what

  677. Martin Luther called

  678. the great exchange.

  679. Our sin given to Christ.

  680. His righteousness

  681. given to us.

  682. We are also to be

  683. presented blameless

  684. this is without blemish.

  685. Reconciliation gives us

  686. a blameless character

  687. and above reproach

  688. which goes beyond

  689. this idea

  690. of being blameless.

  691. No one

  692. can bring a charge

  693. against us.

  694. Those who are found

  695. in Christ.

  696. Those who have been

  697. reconciled to God.

  698. No one can even bring

  699. a charge against us.

  700. Romans 8.32-34

  701. He who did not

  702. spare His own Son

  703. but gave Him up

  704. for us all,

  705. how will He not

  706. also

  707. so with Him

  708. graciously give us

  709. all things.

  710. Who shall bring

  711. any charge

  712. against God's elect?

  713. It is God who justifies

  714. who is to condemn.

  715. Christ Jesus

  716. is the one who died

  717. more than that

  718. who was raised,

  719. who is at the right hand

  720. of God,

  721. who is indeed

  722. interceding for us.

  723. Because we have

  724. a great intercessor,

  725. the person Jesus Christ,

  726. and because we are

  727. found in Him,

  728. we have been

  729. reconciled

  730. to God.

  731. And because God

  732. has reconciled us

  733. to Himself,

  734. He has declared us

  735. righteous in Christ.

  736. And no one can leverage

  737. a legitimate accusation

  738. against us

  739. that has eternal weight.

  740. It is an accomplished,

  741. finished work

  742. that we would be presented

  743. in this way

  744. before God.

  745. So we have a need.

  746. We have the means.

  747. There's a goal.

  748. There also ought to be

  749. evidence

  750. of our reconciliation.

  751. Evidence.

  752. of that reconciliation.

  753. And beloved,

  754. you need to hear this.

  755. The church today

  756. needs to hear this.

  757. Paul's words in verse 23.

  758. If indeed

  759. you continue.

  760. If indeed

  761. you continue.

  762. This has been accomplished

  763. on your behalf.

  764. You were once

  765. alienated

  766. and hostile mind

  767. and doing evil deeds,

  768. but now

  769. Jesus Christ

  770. by the work of His blood

  771. has reconciled you

  772. to God

  773. to present you

  774. blameless,

  775. holy,

  776. above reproach,

  777. before Him

  778. if indeed

  779. you continue

  780. in this faith.

  781. If you have

  782. professed faith

  783. in Jesus Christ,

  784. His person

  785. and His work,

  786. and then you

  787. continue

  788. in this faith.

  789. Stable

  790. and steadfast.

  791. Not shifting

  792. from the hope

  793. of the gospel

  794. that you heard,

  795. which has been

  796. proclaimed in all

  797. creation under heaven

  798. and of which I,

  799. Paul,

  800. became a minister.

  801. If you

  802. continue

  803. in the faith,

  804. then here is presented

  805. the doctrine

  806. of the perseverance

  807. of the saints.

  808. Those who are truly

  809. in Christ,

  810. who are saints,

  811. will

  812. persevere

  813. to the end.

  814. The doctrine states

  815. that all those

  816. who are in Christ

  817. will persist

  818. in holiness

  819. until the end,

  820. their death

  821. or Christ's return.

  822. They will persist

  823. in holiness.

  824. Progress

  825. in holiness.

  826. Not found perfect

  827. on our own.

  828. Certainly found

  829. righteous in Christ

  830. before God.

  831. Not living perfect lives,

  832. but persisting,

  833. moving on

  834. in holiness.

  835. Continually hating

  836. more of the world

  837. and loving more

  838. of the things

  839. of God.

  840. Turning from sin

  841. and turning to Christ.

  842. You've heard me say

  843. many times before

  844. our trajectory

  845. should be heavenward.

  846. We should be working

  847. in that direction.

  848. Zoom out

  849. from our lives

  850. and that's the way

  851. the graph should run.

  852. Zoom in on any

  853. given moment?

  854. Maybe not.

  855. But in a general sense,

  856. we ought to be

  857. pressing towards

  858. holiness.

  859. Some prefer to call

  860. this doctrine

  861. the perseverance

  862. and preservation

  863. of the saints

  864. in order to express

  865. both the proper activity,

  866. that is,

  867. a pursuit of holiness

  868. of the Christian,

  869. as well as the timeline

  870. for that.

  871. That God will take us

  872. all the way

  873. to the end.

  874. That we are

  875. eternally secure.

  876. We've been sanctified

  877. and we are being

  878. sanctified to express

  879. both of those things.

  880. This must be true

  881. of the Christian.

  882. To know that you're

  883. reconciled to God.

  884. There must be some

  885. evidence of such a claim.

  886. Simply, those who claim

  887. to be disciples

  888. of Jesus Christ

  889. follow Him.

  890. They must follow Him.

  891. The very definition

  892. of the Word.

  893. To say,

  894. I follow Jesus Christ

  895. and then to not

  896. follow Him

  897. is idiotic.

  898. If we are disciples

  899. of Jesus Christ,

  900. we do what He says.

  901. We're obedient

  902. to the call

  903. of the Gospel.

  904. We take up

  905. the promises.

  906. We obey the commands.

  907. We press in

  908. to the truth.

  909. John 3.36

  910. Jesus says,

  911. whoever believes

  912. in the Son

  913. has eternal life.

  914. True.

  915. Right?

  916. Fantastic.

  917. Oh, those words

  918. are precious.

  919. Whoever believes

  920. in the Son

  921. has eternal life.

  922. But He helps us

  923. understand this Greek

  924. word belief,

  925. which is not simply

  926. mental cognition,

  927. but rather the type

  928. of belief that

  929. changes you.

  930. Right?

  931. And it reorients

  932. the way in which

  933. you live.

  934. And He helps us

  935. with that in verse 36.

  936. He goes on to say,

  937. whoever does not

  938. obey the Son

  939. shall not see life,

  940. but the wrath of God

  941. remains on Him.

  942. There are too many

  943. people who claim

  944. to know the Gospel

  945. of Jesus Christ

  946. and believe it

  947. and live in

  948. contradiction to it.

  949. Luke 6.43-45

  950. Jesus says,

  951. for no good tree

  952. bears bad fruit,

  953. nor again does a bad

  954. tree bear good fruit,

  955. for each tree is known

  956. by its fruit.

  957. Now certainly,

  958. occasionally,

  959. an apple tree bears

  960. an apple that's not

  961. delicious.

  962. But still it bears

  963. apples.

  964. For figs are not

  965. gathered from

  966. thorn bushes,

  967. nor are grapes

  968. picked from a

  969. bramble bush.

  970. The good person

  971. out of the good

  972. treasure of his

  973. heart produces

  974. good,

  975. and the evil person

  976. out of his evil

  977. treasure produces

  978. evil.

  979. evil.

  980. How do we know

  981. this then?

  982. How can we possibly

  983. know,

  984. how can we have

  985. some indicator,

  986. some measure of

  987. whether or not

  988. we have been

  989. reconciled?

  990. Whether or not we

  991. are found in Christ?

  992. We've been given a

  993. book that you can

  994. read,

  995. and you can see

  996. how it is that the

  997. Christian is supposed

  998. to live.

  999. And you can not just

  1000. read the book,

  1001. but let the book

  1002. read you,

  1003. and show how you

  1004. fail at these

  1005. things.

  1006. Even though I'm

  1007. not perfect,

  1008. I have a great

  1009. confidence that I

  1010. am of God,

  1011. because when I read

  1012. the things that I

  1013. don't do well,

  1014. I am convicted by

  1015. those things,

1016. and I want to do

  1017. those things.

  1018. I don't want to

  1019. continue in the

  1020. old Nathan ways,

  1021. the old self.

1022. I want to be the

  1023. new self.

1024. I want to live by

  1025. the power of God

  1026. within me to do

  1027. the things I am

  1028. supposed to do.

  1029. I love His Word.

  1030. I treasure it.

  1031. I want to be

  1032. sinless.

  1033. I so desire that,

  1034. to cast off the

  1035. burden of my sin

  1036. and all of the

  1037. consequence that

  1038. comes with it.

  1039. I want to be

  1040. perfect,

1041. so I press at it,

1042. and I go after it,

  1043. and this is the

  1044. evidence that Christ

  1045. is at work within

  1046. me.

  1047. Pick up the book

  1048. and read it,

  1049. and let it read

  1050. you.

  1051. Ask that God

  1052. would work in

  1053. your heart by the

  1054. power of His Word.

  1055. This is the tool

  1056. that the Spirit

  1057. of God uses in

  1058. our lives,

  1059. not your feelings.

  1060. Never your feelings.

  1061. He uses the Word

  1062. of God.

1063. It is precious to us

  1064. for this,

  1065. that we might

  1066. measure our lives

  1067. by it.

  1068. 1 John,

  1069. if you are doubting

  1070. whether or not

  1071. you have placed

  1072. believing faith in

  1073. Christ,

  1074. go read the book

  1075. of 1 John.

  1076. It is just

  1077. constantly saying

  1078. to you,

  1079. hold yourself up

  1080. to this.

  1081. Look at your life

  1082. in comparison to this.

  1083. Be sure you are

  1084. found in the faith.

  1085. Beloved,

  1086. eternal consequence

  1087. is at play here.

  1088. Don't think you're

  1089. good enough.

  1090. Know that you're

  1091. found in Christ.

  1092. That you'll never

  1093. be good enough,

  1094. but that you're

  1095. found in Christ.

  1096. And as such,

  1097. your affections have

  1098. been turned.

  1099. You're moving in a

  1100. different direction.

  1101. You have repented,

  1102. turned from sin,

  1103. and you've been

  1104. turned to God.

  1105. I have been accused

  1106. of heresy

  1107. teaching such a thing.

  1108. 1 John 5.1

  1109. given as the

  1110. counterpoint.

  1111. Now I recognize

  1112. the danger in telling

  1113. you that there has

  1114. to be some measure,

  1115. some outwardly

  1116. visible thing

  1117. that's going to help

  1118. you know you're

  1119. found in Christ.

  1120. I get that.

  1121. I get the fear

  1122. it may even cause

  1123. you,

  1124. but that's a good

  1125. thing if you're

  1126. not found in Christ.

  1127. I hope the majority

  1128. of you this morning

  1129. are saying,

  1130. I'm good.

  1131. I fail,

  1132. but I'm good.

  1133. I know that I have

  1134. this eternal security

  1135. in Him.

  1136. 1 John 5.1 says,

  1137. Everyone who believes

  1138. that Jesus is the

  1139. Christ has been

  1140. born of God,

  1141. and everyone who

  1142. loves the Father

  1143. loves whoever has

  1144. been born of Him.

  1145. There's the text,

  1146. the counterpoint

  1147. to this thing.

  1148. Everyone who believes,

  1149. who has professed

  1150. faith in Jesus Christ

1151. has been born of God.

  1152. But verses 2-5

  1153. go on.

  1154. By this we know

  1155. that we love the

  1156. children of God,

  1157. when we love God

  1158. and obey His commandments.

  1159. For this is the

  1160. love of God,

1161. that we keep His commandments.

  1162. And His commandments

  1163. are not burdensome.

  1164. For everyone who has

  1165. been born of God

  1166. overcomes the world.

  1167. And this is the

  1168. victory that has

  1169. overcome the world,

  1170. our faith.

  1171. Who is it that

  1172. overcomes the world

  1173. except the one

  1174. who believes

  1175. that Jesus

  1176. is the Son

  1177. of God?

  1178. You see what

  1179. John does for us

  1180. there?

  1181. He says,

  1182. if you believe

  1183. that Jesus is the

  1184. Christ,

1185. you've been born of God.

1186. But then he tells us

1187. how it is that we're

  1188. meant to give expression

  1189. of that.

  1190. That we're supposed

  1191. to actually show

  1192. evidence forth

  1193. of that.

  1194. And then he

  1195. encapsulates with

  1196. verse 5,

  1197. who is it that

  1198. overcomes the world?

  1199. Except the one

  1200. who believes

  1201. that Jesus is

  1202. the Son

  1203. of God.

  1204. We have to hold

  1205. our lives up

  1206. to the great truth

  1207. of the Scripture.

  1208. We must

  1209. see evidence

  1210. that we're good

  1211. trees or we're not.

  1212. And then repentance

  1213. and faith.

  1214. Right?

  1215. You can be confident

  1216. this morning

  1217. that you're found

  1218. in Christ.

  1219. Repent of your sin

  1220. and turn to Him.

  1221. It's of great

  1222. importance that we

  1223. rightly understand

  1224. the means and nature

  1225. of our salvation

  1226. because we need

  1227. to be reconciled

  1228. to God

  1229. and Jesus Christ

  1230. is the only means

  1231. by which this is

  1232. possible.

  1233. We need to be

  1234. presented before God

  1235. clothed in Christ's

  1236. righteousness.

  1237. We need to ask

  1238. ourselves if we are

  1239. truly saved

  1240. and we need to

  1241. lead others

  1242. in doing the same.

  1243. Beloved,

  1244. there is a ripe

  1245. harvest to be had

  1246. in the church.

  1247. Those who are

  1248. churched,

  1249. many,

  1250. many people,

  1251. your friends

  1252. and your

  1253. co-workers.

  1254. I know very few

  1255. people who won't

  1256. say,

  1257. yeah,

  1258. I go to church.

  1259. Yeah,

  1260. I'm a Christian.

  1261. They need to be

  1262. asked smart,

  1263. probing questions.

  1264. You need to spend

  1265. time with them

  1266. and you need to

  1267. show them what

  1268. pursuing Christ

  1269. looks like.

  1270. You need to

  1271. experience it for

  1272. yourself and you

  1273. need to display it

  1274. and proclaim it

  1275. in your living.

  1276. The supremacy of

  1277. Jesus Christ in all

  1278. things to all

  1279. peoples.

  1280. will you labor

  1281. with me in that

  1282. proclamation?

  1283. I hope that you

  1284. will with our

  1285. living and with

  1286. our words in all

  1287. things to all

  1288. peoples.

  1289. I'm going to

  1290. close by reading

  1291. to you again

  1292. another prayer.

  1293. You can tell I

  1294. poked around in

  1295. this book this

  1296. morning.

  1297. This is a

  1298. prayer from,

  1299. again,

  1300. from the Valley

  1301. of Vision.

  1302. It's a collection

  1303. of Puritan

  1304. prayers entitled

  1305. Reconciliation.

  1306. Reconciliation.

  1307. Lord God

  1308. Almighty,

  1309. Thou art

  1310. beforehand with

  1311. men,

  1312. for Thou hast

  1313. reconciled Thyself

  1314. to the world

  1315. through the cross

  1316. and dost beseech

  1317. men to accept

  1318. reconciliation.

  1319. It is my

  1320. responsibility to

  1321. grasp Thy

  1322. overtures of

  1323. grace,

  1324. for if Thou,

  1325. the offended

  1326. part,

  1327. act first with

  1328. the word of

  1329. appeasement,

  1330. I need not

  1331. call and

  1332. question Thy

  1333. willingness to

  1334. save,

  1335. but must

  1336. deplore my

  1337. own foolish

  1338. maliciousness.

  1339. If I do not

  1340. come to Thee as

  1341. one who seeks

  1342. Thy favor,

  1343. I live in

  1344. contempt,

  1345. anger,

  1346. malice,

  1347. self-sufficiency,

  1348. and Thou

  1349. dost call it

  1350. enmity.

  1351. Thou hast

  1352. taught me

  1353. the necessity

  1354. of a mediator,

  1355. a Messiah,

  1356. to embrace

  1357. in love

  1358. with all my

  1359. heart,

  1360. as King

  1361. to rule me,

  1362. as prophet

  1363. to guide me,

  1364. and as priest

  1365. to take away

  1366. my sin

  1367. and death,

  1368. and this by

  1369. faith in Thy

  1370. beloved Son

  1371. who teaches

  1372. me not to

  1373. guide myself,

  1374. not to obey

  1375. myself,

  1376. not to try

  1377. to rule and

  1378. conquer sin,

  1379. but to cleave

  1380. to the One

  1381. who will do

  1382. all for me.

  1383. Thou hast

  1384. made known

  1385. to me that

  1386. to save

  1387. me is

  1388. Christ's

  1389. work,

  1390. but to

  1391. cleave to

  1392. Him by

  1393. faith is

  1394. my work,

  1395. and with

  1396. this faith

  1397. in the

  1398. necessity

  1399. of my

  1400. daily

  1401. repentance

  1402. as a

  1403. mourning

  1404. for the

  1405. sin which

  1406. Christ by

  1407. grace

  1408. has removed.

  1409. Continue,

  1410. O God,

  1411. to teach

  1412. me that

  1413. faith

  1414. apprehends

  1415. Christ's

  1416. righteousness

  1417. not only

  1418. for the

  1419. satisfaction

  1420. of justice,

  1421. but as

  1422. unspotted

  1423. evidence

  1424. of Thy

  1425. love to

  1426. me.

  1427. Help me

  1428. to make

  1429. use of

  1430. His work

  1431. of salvation

  1432. as the

  1433. ground of

  1434. peace and

  1435. of Thy

  1436. favor to

  1437. and acceptance

  1438. of me,

  1439. the sinner,

  1440. so that I

  1441. may live

  1442. always near

  1443. the cross.

  1444. Let's pray

  1445. together.
