  1. Please join me in turning your copy of God's Word to Paul's letter to the Colossians.

  2. Our text for today is Colossians 1-24.

  3. But before we get there, I want to catch you up to where we've been just beginning at verse 15 and working our way up to verse 23.

  4. Two weeks ago, we looked at this great cosmic Christological hymn found in verses 15-20 which reads,

  5. He, being Jesus Christ, is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.

  6. For by Him, all things were created in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities.

  7. All things were created through Him and for Him.

  8. And He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.

  9. And He is the head of the body, the church.

  10. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything He might be preeminent.

  11. For in Him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell,

  12. and through Him to reconcile to Himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven,

  13. making peace by the blood of the cross.

  14. And we saw that Jesus Christ is supreme in a number of different ways.

  15. But finally, the fourth way in which He is supreme is that He has made a way of reconciliation by the cross.

  16. And we talked about that at greater length last week, verses 21-23.

  17. Stating the condition that all of humanity finds themselves in apart from Christ,

  18. and the way in which we are once enemies of God, but made friends with God.

  19. Verse 21 reads,

  20. And you who were once alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds,

  21. He is now reconciled in His body of flesh by His death,

  22. in order to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before Him.

  23. If indeed you continue in the faith, stable and steadfast,

  24. not shifting from the hope of the gospel that you heard,

  25. which had been proclaimed in all creation under heaven,

  26. and of which I, Paul, became a minister.

  27. So you see there in verse 23, Paul has this ministry now of reconciliation,

  28. as do we all.

  29. And now we find in the next four verses,

  30. verses 24-27, a bit of a fleshing out of that very ministry.

  31. So I want us to see today the aim of Paul's ministry,

  32. and also the means of Paul's ministry.

  33. And I'm front-loading you here, and I'm aware of this,

  34. but the means of Paul's ministry is suffering.

  35. The means of Paul's ministry is suffering.

  36. And this is such a weighty topic.

  37. There's so much to this.

  38. And I feel this week that I've been rushed right into the midst of something

  39. that I can't possibly unravel in the next 30-45 minutes.

  40. There's a great breadth of teaching in the Scripture concerning suffering.

  41. Today's sermon will be just a small piece of the pie.

  42. My head is a jumbled mess,

  43. and my heart is wrestling still with the implications of such teaching.

  44. Specifically, what does it mean for me?

  45. For my life?

  46. And specifically, what does it mean for the life of our church?

  47. There's so much here.

  48. In this example of Paul's ministry,

  49. the means by which he is carrying out this ministry of reconciliation.

  50. And it's very easy for us to just run past this type of teaching.

  51. Give it a little wave or a tip of the hat as we go by.

  52. Sure, suffering, yeah, doctrine about that.

  53. We get it.

  54. When that's a reality someday for us,

  55. we'll have the knowledge to deal with it.

  56. And we fail to really engage it.

  57. To really work out its meaning

  58. and all of its subsequent requirements of our life.

  59. So I want to invite you to do that with me today.

  60. To encourage you that sitting here for this bit of time

  61. and thinking about these things while I'm talking about it

  62. is not nearly enough.

  63. But you need to go from this place and continue conversations.

  64. You need to wrestle with it in your own heart.

  65. You need to go back and read and re-read and re-read

  66. and allow it to read you this particular text.

  67. And so I read, beginning in verse 24.

  68. Paul writes,

  69. Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake.

  70. And in my flesh I am filling up what is lacking in Christ's afflictions

  71. for the sake of His body, that is, the church.

  72. Of which I became a minister according to the stewardship from God

  73. that was given to me for you,

  74. to make the Word of God fully known.

  75. The mystery hidden for ages and generations,

  76. but now revealed to a saint.

  77. To them God chose to make known

  78. how great among the Gentiles

  79. are the riches of the glory of this mystery,

  80. which is Christ in you,

  81. the hope of glory.

  82. This is God's Word to us.

  83. It was written for His glory and our good.

  84. And we would all do well this morning

  85. to listen to it in order to believe its promises

  86. and to obey its commands.

  87. Firstly, let's see the aim of Paul's ministry.

  88. Verse 25, 26, and 27.

  89. I hope you'll allow me to work backwards

  90. and that won't bother you too much.

  91. What is the aim of Paul's ministry?

  92. A couple of key phrases here

  93. to make the Word of God fully known.

  94. He talks about this mystery that's been hidden for generations.

  95. And what he's talking about is the way in which

  96. the Gospel of God was meant to come

  97. and extend to the entire world.

  98. Not just a salvation for Israel,

  99. but to go much further beyond.

  100. And the way in which that would happen

  101. in the person and work of Jesus Christ.

  102. Verse 27,

  103. To them God chose to make known

  104. how great among the Gentiles

  105. the saints get to know

  106. this great work among the Gentiles,

  107. the riches of His glory,

  108. which is Christ in you.

  109. The hope of glory.

  110. This Gospel of reconciliation,

  111. bringing people back into right relationship with God

  112. that was intended from the very beginning

  113. to extend to the nations.

  114. The purpose of God in history

  115. is that the Gospel of reconciliation

  116. spread to all peoples of the world

  117. and yield God-centered,

  118. Christ-exalting churches.

  119. This is the purpose of God in human history.

  120. This redemptive story is about

  121. spreading the Gospel of reconciliation

  122. to all the peoples of the world

  123. to yield God-centered,

  124. Christ-exalting churches.

  125. This was the promise of the Old Testament.

  126. Psalm 22, verse 27 and 28.

    Psalms 22:27

  127. All the ends of the earth

  128. shall remember and turn to the Lord,

  129. and all the families of the nations

  130. shall worship before you.

  131. For kingship belongs to the Lord

  132. and He rules over the nations.

  133. This was the promise of Jesus

  134. to His disciples.

  135. Matthew 24, verse 14.

    Matthew 24:14

  136. And this Gospel of the Kingdom

  137. will be proclaimed throughout the whole world

  138. as a testimony to all nations.

  139. And then the end will come.

  140. This was the design of God in the cross.

  141. As heaven's worship proclaims

  142. in Revelation 5-9,

  143. you were slain,

  144. and by your blood you ransomed people

  145. for God from every tribe

  146. and language and people and nation.

  147. This was the final command

  148. of our risen Lord.

  149. Matthew 28, 18-20.

  150. All authority in heaven and on earth

  151. has been given to me.

  152. Go therefore and make disciples

  153. of all nations,

  154. baptizing them in the name of the Father

  155. and the Son and the Holy Spirit,

  156. teaching them to observe

  157. all that I have commanded you.

  158. And behold,

  159. I am with you always

  160. to the end of the age.

  161. This was the God-given aim

  162. of Paul's apostleship.

  163. Romans 1-5.

  164. Through Christ we have received grace

  165. and apostleship

  166. to bring about the obedience of faith

  167. for the sake of His name

  168. among all the nations.

  169. This was Paul's holy ambition.

  170. It was rooted not just in a unique apostolic call

  171. to Paul to go to the Gentiles,

  172. but also in the Old Testament promise

  173. that is still valid today.

  174. Paul writes in Romans 15, 20-21,

  175. citing from Isaiah 52-15,

  176. I make it my ambition to preach the Gospel,

  177. not where Christ has already been named,

  178. lest I build on someone else's foundation,

  179. but as it is written,

  180. those who have never been told of Him will see,

  181. and those who have never heard

  182. will understand.

  183. Also in Acts 13-47,

  184. citing from Isaiah 42-6,

  185. the Lord has commanded us, saying,

  186. I have made you a light for the Gentiles

  187. that you may bring salvation

  188. to the ends of the earth.

  189. This was the purpose of the sending

  190. of the Holy Spirit.

  191. Acts 1-8.

  192. You will receive power

  193. when the Holy Spirit has come upon you,

  194. and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem

  195. and in all Judea and Samaria

  196. and to the end of the earth.

  197. Again, the purpose of God in history

  198. is that the Gospel of reconciliation,

  199. the ability for people to be reconciled

  200. to God through Christ,

  201. be spread to all the peoples of the world

  202. and yield God-centered,

  203. Christ-exalting churches.

  204. And this is the aim of Paul's ministry

  205. as we see in those last three verses

  206. of our text today,

  207. 25, 26, and 27.

  208. This is the goal of his ministry,

  209. that these peoples might know Christ,

  210. the hope of glory.

  211. Secondly, though,

  212. what is the means of Paul's ministry?

  213. What is the vehicle that carries along

  214. this great, high, divine call

  215. on Paul's life?

  216. And this is where we'll spend

  217. the rest of our time in v. 24,

  218. where he says,

  219. Now I rejoice in my sufferings

  220. for your sake.

  221. And in my flesh I am filling up

  222. what is lacking in Christ's afflictions

  223. for the sake of the body,

  224. that is, the church.

  225. So these two broadening objects

  226. of his ministry.

  227. The sake of the Colossian believers.

  228. I rejoice in my suffering for your sake.

  229. And all believers,

  230. for the body of Christ,

  231. the church.

  232. He's speaking in large terms here.

  233. The entirety of the church.

  234. And in my flesh I am filling up

  235. what is lacking in Christ's afflictions

  236. for the sake of the body.

  237. That is, the church.

  238. The vehicle by which

  239. his ministry is being carried along

  240. is suffering.

  241. It's very interesting, isn't it?

  242. Very curious that we ought to really

  243. stop and pay attention

  244. to what's being said here.

  245. If God's historical,

  246. global purposes still stand,

  247. which they do,

  248. and we are part of that process,

  249. now given as ministers of reconciliation,

  250. we really need to look

  251. at Paul's example

  252. for the means by which

  253. we are to carry the gospel

  254. to the world.

  255. The suffering of Paul

  256. was not a consequence

  257. of his ministry.

  258. Some would look at it that way.

  259. Here, the suffering he's referring to

  260. is his imprisonment.

  261. He is right now in prison

  262. writing this letter.

  263. Likely a Roman prison.

  264. He's referring to that

  265. specifically,

  266. but it's not a consequence

  267. of his ministry,

  268. but rather

  269. a strategy

  270. of his ministry.

  271. A God-given,

  272. a divine

  273. strategy

  274. of his ministry.

  275. Suffering was a primary means

  276. by which Paul spread

  277. the gospel of reconciliation

  278. to all peoples of the world

  279. in order to yield

  280. God-centered,

  281. Christ-exalting churches.

  282. Hear me say that again.

  283. Suffering

  284. was a primary means,

  285. not the only,

  286. but a primary means

  287. by which Paul spread

  288. the gospel of reconciliation

  289. to all the peoples of the world

  290. in order to yield

  291. God-centered,

  292. Christ-exalting churches.

  293. And nothing has changed.

  294. If you believe that it has,

  295. then you have failed

  296. to believe the gospel rightly.

  297. You have discarded

  298. the sufficiency

  299. of the Scriptures.

  300. You think in some way

  301. we live beyond this age.

  302. That this wasn't really written

  303. for us

  304. as Americans.

  305. But it was.

  306. Let me assure you

  307. of that.

  308. This is the era

  309. of much modern preaching.

  310. And it is very Achan

  311. to the prosperity gospel

  312. which I hope all of you

  313. reject fully.

  314. Rather than saying

  315. believe in Jesus

  316. and He will make you

  317. wealthy and healthy.

  318. This type of teaching says

  319. believe in Jesus

  320. and you can keep your wealth

  321. and your health.

  322. You've already got it.

  323. Just hang on to it.

  324. Jesus is a little addition

  325. to that.

  326. Fire insurance policy.

  327. Stick in your back pocket.

  328. It also says

  329. change isn't necessary

  330. to follow Jesus.

  331. Go about your life

  332. as an American Christian.

  333. It's fine and good.

  334. Just add a little bit

  335. of extra activity

  336. and everything will be okay

  337. in the end.

  338. Beloved,

  339. this is not the call

  340. of the gospel.

  341. And this is the great error

  342. of our day.

  343. It's cheap grace.

  344. The gospel is a free gift to us,

  345. but then it requires of us

  346. our lives.

  347. All of who we are.

  348. Let's look at the call

  349. of the gospel

  350. of Jesus Christ.

  351. Matthew 8, 34 and 35.

  352. If you've been with us,

  353. you should be familiar with us.

  354. If anyone would come after me,

  355. let him deny himself

  356. and take up his cross

  357. and follow me.

  358. For whoever would save his life

  359. will lose it.

  360. But whoever loses his life

  361. for my sake

  362. and the gospels will save it.

  363. The cross was not a beautiful thing.

  364. The cross was not some little burden

  365. you have to bear day to day.

  366. The cross was a place of death.

  367. The cross was a place of sacrifice.

  368. The cross was a place

  369. where we lay down everything

  370. in order to gain Jesus.

  371. Matthew 10, 16.

  372. Jesus says,

  373. Behold, I am sending you out

  374. as sheep in the midst of wolves.

  375. So be wise as serpent

  376. and innocent as doves.

  377. In Romans 8, 36,

  378. Paul writes,

  379. citing from Psalm 44, 22,

  380. As it is written,

  381. For your sake we are being killed

  382. all the day long.

  383. We are regarded as sheep

  384. to be slaughtered.

  385. Look at the portion granted

  386. to those in Christ in 8, 35.

  387. Proceeding this, Romans 8, 36.

  388. Romans 8, 35.

  389. Tribulation, distress,

  390. persecution, famine,

  391. nakedness, danger,

  392. and sword.

  393. Jesus goes on in Matthew 10, 17, and 18.

  394. Beware of men,

  395. for they will deliver you over

  396. to courts and flog you

  397. in their synagogues,

  398. and you will be dragged

  399. before governors and kings

  400. for my sake.

  401. Why?

  402. At the end of verse 18.

  403. To bear witness before them

  404. and the Gentiles.

  405. The very purposes of God

  406. are being carried out

  407. in the suffering

  408. of His people.

  409. Verse 24,

  410. this phrase is so very,

  411. very fascinating.

  412. It should draw our attention.

  413. In my flesh,

  414. I am filling up

  415. what is lacking

  416. in Christ's afflictions.

  417. It's an interesting phrasing,

  418. is it not?

  419. We must be very careful

  420. at this point

  421. to not think

  422. that the affliction

  423. of the saints

  424. is somehow salvific.

  425. That Christ's suffering

  426. and death on the cross

  427. wasn't enough

  428. for the salvation of people,

  429. and so we also

  430. bring about redemptive work

  431. in our suffering.

  432. That there's somehow

  433. some kind of holiness

  434. propitiated to people

  435. who believe

  436. because of our suffering.

  437. Right?

  438. Our suffering has

  439. nothing to do

  440. with the remediation

  441. of sin.

  442. Christ's suffering

  443. was sufficient

  444. for that.

  445. Turn to the book of Hebrews

  446. with me,

  447. beginning in chapter 7.

  448. I'm having you turn here

  449. because I really want you

  450. to see this.

  451. I can't rattle past this.

  452. I know so often

  453. I just spit Scripture

  454. at you.

  455. It's my hope

  456. that you go back

  457. and listen to a recording

  458. or that you're taking

  459. fast notes.

  460. For the sake of time,

  461. I try not to have you

  462. turn everywhere we go.

  463. But you need to see this.

  464. The blood of Jesus Christ

  465. was enough

  466. to pay for the sins

  467. of the church.

  468. For all of those

  469. who would believe in Him,

  470. it was sufficient.

  471. It was not lacking

  472. in that sense.

  473. Right?

  474. Make sure you get this right.

  475. Hebrews 7.27

  476. He has no need,

  477. Jesus,

  478. has no need

  479. like those high priests

  480. to offer sacrifices daily.

  481. First for His own sins

  482. and then for those

  483. of the people

  484. since He did this

  485. once for all

  486. when He offered up Himself.

  487. A completed work.

  488. The temple sacrificial system

  489. was an ongoing,

  490. a constantly ongoing work

  491. happening.

  492. But Jesus Christ

  493. accomplished this

  494. once for all

  495. when He offered up Himself.

  496. Hebrews 9.12

  497. Jesus entered once for all

  498. into the holy places.

  499. Not by means of the blood

  500. of goats and calves,

  501. but by means of His own blood.

  502. Thus securing

  503. an eternal redemption.

  504. A completed work.

  505. A final thing.

  506. Once for all.

  507. Hebrews 9.26

  508. The second part of it.

  509. Jesus has appeared

  510. once for all

  511. at the end of the ages

  512. to put away sin

  513. by the sacrifice

  514. of Himself.

  515. Hebrews 10.14

  516. For by a single offering

  517. Jesus has perfected

  518. for all time

  519. those who are being

  520. sanctified.

  521. Not sacrificed.

  522. Those who are being

  523. sanctified.

  524. Those who have believed

  525. in the work of Jesus Christ

  526. on the cross

  527. are saved

  528. for all time.

  529. Okay?

  530. This message

  531. is the thing

  532. that we believe in.

  533. It's the way

  534. in which the Word

  535. comes to us.

  536. So do not be mistaken.

  537. Jesus' sacrifice

  538. was not lacking

  539. in its power

  540. to redeem the church

  541. from its sin.

  542. In no way

  543. was it lacking for that.

  544. Jesus' life and death

  545. was fully sufficient

  546. to save for all time

  547. those who have placed

  548. and will place

  549. believing faith

  550. in Him.

  551. Accomplished work.

  552. It is fully sufficient

  553. for that.

  554. So how then

  555. are Christ's afflictions

  556. lacking?

  557. Because they seem to be

  558. in some way, right?

  559. Paul's saying that

  560. he's filling up

  561. what is lacking

  562. in the afflictions

  563. of Christ.

  564. Let me read to you

  565. a quote

  566. from John Piper's

  567. great book

  568. he wrote called

  569. Filling Up

  570. the Afflictions of Christ

  571. in which he wrote,

  572. What is lacking

  573. in the afflictions

  574. of Christ

  575. is not that they

  576. are deficient

  577. in worth

  578. as though they

  579. could not sufficiently

  580. cover the sins

  581. of all who believe.

  582. What is lacking

  583. is that the infinite

  584. value of Christ's

  585. afflictions

  586. is not known

  587. and trusted

  588. in the world.

  589. These afflictions

  590. and what they mean

  591. are still hidden

  592. to most peoples.

  593. And God's intention

  594. is that the mystery

  595. be revealed

  596. to all nations

  597. as I proved

  598. to you previously.

  599. So the afflictions

  600. of Christ

  601. are lacking

  602. quote unquote

  603. in the sense

  604. that they are not

  605. seen and known

  606. and loved

  607. among the nations.

  608. So they must be

  609. carried by us.

  610. The afflictions

  611. must be taken

  612. by us

  613. and put on display

  614. by us.

  615. And in so doing

  616. we complete

  617. what is lacking

  618. in the afflictions

  619. of Christ

  620. by extending

  621. them to others.

  622. We put on display

  623. what Christ

  624. accomplished

  625. accomplished

  626. for those

  627. who would believe

  628. in His person

  629. and His work.

  630. A little help in this

  631. for us

  632. from a man named

  633. Epaphroditus.

  634. Those of you

  635. who are part of

  636. community outreach groups

  637. you're meeting last week

  638. you studied this.

  639. If you'll turn to

  640. Philippians chapter 2

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  641. I'll show you quickly

  642. the similar language

  643. that Paul is using

  644. to help us understand

  645. what he means here.

  646. I'm going to read

  647. this for you quickly

  648. just to set the stage

  649. for you.

  650. We're really trying

  651. to get to verse 30

  652. so hang with me

  653. if it drives you crazy

  654. I'd read fast

  655. I apologize.

  656. Philippians 2

    Philippians 2:25

  657. verse 25

  658. I have thought it necessary

  659. to send to you

  660. Epaphroditus

  661. my brother

  662. and fellow worker

  663. and fellow soldier

  664. and your messenger

  665. and minister to my need

  666. for he has been longing

  667. for you all

  668. and has been distressed

  669. because you heard

  670. that he was ill

  671. indeed he was ill

  672. near to death

  673. but God had mercy on him

  674. and not only on him

  675. but me also

  676. lest I should have sorrow

  677. upon sorrow

  678. I am the more eager

  679. to send him

  680. therefore that you may rejoice

  681. at seeing him again

  682. and that I may be less anxious

  683. so receive him in the Lord

  684. with all joy

  685. and honor such men

  686. for he nearly died

  687. for the work of Christ

  688. risking his life

  689. to complete

  690. what was lacking

  691. in your service

  692. to me.

  693. Okay so this man

  694. named Epaphroditus

  695. was sent by the Philippian believers

  696. to bring some gift

  697. money

  698. food

  699. books

  700. something of that sort

  701. to Paul

  702. and on the journey there

  703. it would seem

  704. he became

  705. really ill

  706. almost to death

  707. of interesting note

  708. Epaphroditus

  709. is really worried

  710. about what they think

  711. about that

  712. not so much

  713. about his physical state

  714. God spares him

  715. of that

  716. and as Paul

  717. is going to send him back

  718. he's saying

  719. honor this man

  720. for the way

  721. in which he has lived

  722. for your sake

  723. and he has come

  724. he's almost died

  725. risking his life

  726. gone through some affliction

  727. some suffering

  728. risking his life

  729. to complete

  730. what was lacking

  731. in your service

  732. to me

  733. and that is to say

  734. that it would have been ideal

  735. it would have been

  736. most perfect

  737. for the Philippians

  738. themselves

  739. to have been there

  740. but instead

  741. Epaphroditus

  742. was sent

  743. as an ambassador

  744. he filled up

  745. what was lacking

  746. he himself

  747. came

  748. and presented it

  749. before Paul

  750. and it's the exact

  751. same phrasing

  752. the exact same

  753. Greek phrase

  754. that's used

  755. in both places

  756. to help us

  757. understand this

  758. so suffering

  759. was a primary

  760. means

  761. by which

  762. Paul spread

  763. the gospel

  764. of reconciliation

  765. to all peoples

  766. in the world

  767. in order to yield

  768. God-centered

  769. Christ

  770. exalting

  771. churches

  772. again

  773. a divine

  774. strategy

  775. not merely

  776. a consequence

  777. this is the way

  778. God

  779. has worked

  780. and is continuing

  781. to work

  782. in the world

  783. in the advance

  784. of his kingdom

  785. Tertullian

  786. who was a Christian

  787. who lived from

  788. about

  789. AD 160

  790. to about

  791. AD 225

  792. said of Roman

  793. persecution

  794. the oftener

  795. we are mown

  796. down by you

  797. the more

  798. in number

  799. we grow

  800. the blood

  801. of Christians

  802. is seed

  803. the way

  804. in which

  805. the gospel

  806. advanced

  807. so very

  808. rapidly

  809. in the very

  810. early days

  811. of the church

  812. was through

  813. the persecution

  814. of the church

  815. it had

  816. saving effect

  817. not that it was

  818. powerful for that

  819. but people

  820. looked at

  821. a people

  822. who were

  823. so strange

  824. who had

  825. their gaze

  826. so fixed

  827. heavenward

  828. who worshipped

  829. God in such

  830. a way

  831. that even

  832. to the point

  833. of death

  834. they remained

  835. true

  836. to him

  837. this is a

  838. phenomenal

  839. thing

  840. John Piper

  841. adds to

  842. Tertullian's

  843. statement

  844. for almost

  845. 300 years

  846. Christians

  847. grew in

  848. soil

  849. that was

  850. wet

  851. with the

  852. blood

  853. of martyrs

  854. the suffering

  855. of God's

  856. saints

  857. ought to

  858. be the

  859. norm

  860. not the

  861. exception

  862. it ought

  863. to be

  864. the norm

  865. not the

  866. exception

  867. it should

  868. be

  869. normative

  870. not

  871. exceptional

  872. and it's

  873. really difficult

  874. to know

  875. what this

  876. may look

  877. like

  878. in our

  879. American

  880. setting

  881. it's a

  882. place where

  883. praise God

  884. our religious

  885. freedoms are

  886. protected

  887. or at least

  888. are supposed

  889. to be

  890. protected

  891. we are

  892. reaping the

  893. benefit of

  894. that now

  895. getting to

  896. drive onto

  897. this property

  898. with a

  899. sign

  900. kind of

  901. and meeting

  902. at a certain

  903. time in a

  904. very public

  905. manner

  906. the fact that

  907. my preaching

  908. will be

  909. recorded and

  910. posted online

  911. I have no

  912. fear of

  913. somebody kicking

  914. in my door

  915. as a result

  916. of this

  917. we reap

  918. benefit of

  919. this type of

  920. thing so it's

  921. hard to know

  922. exactly what

  923. this is supposed

  924. to look like

  925. what does

  926. persecution look

  927. like for

  928. the American

  929. Christian

  930. I'm not sure

  931. I completely

  932. know

  933. this is where

  934. my heart

  935. is wrestling

  936. and turning

  937. over

  938. I do

  939. believe that

  940. we're not

  941. there though

  942. maybe it's

  943. just a bit

  944. of discomfort

  945. maybe just a

  946. tiny bit of

  947. derision

  948. you may not

  949. be the cool

  950. person at

  951. your work

  952. or in your

  953. class

  954. but I think

  955. there's got to

  956. be more to

  957. it than that

  958. I wonder how

  959. we would

  960. respond

  961. our church

  962. how we would

  963. respond

  964. if there were

  965. picketers at

  966. the front of

  967. our property

  968. on a Sunday

  969. morning

  970. people with

  971. signs

  972. saying that

  973. we're

  974. hateful

  975. or that

  976. we're

  977. evil

  978. because we

  979. pursue the

  980. ways

  981. of God

  982. worse yet

  983. what if there

  984. were threats

  985. made on our

  986. lives

  987. what if I got

  988. an email

  989. this past

  990. week

  991. that said

  992. that those

  993. who show

  994. up to

  995. this property

  996. on this

  997. day

  998. will certainly

  999. be killed

  1000. how do we

  1001. respond to

  1002. that type

  1003. of threat

  1004. would you

  1005. all gather

  1006. at dawn

  1007. in a secret

  1008. place

  1009. because you're

  1010. so hungry

  1011. for Christian

  1012. fellowship

  1013. and for the

  1014. word of God

  1015. preached

  1016. that you

  1017. would make

  1018. the effort

  1019. to do

  1020. that

  1021. you wouldn't

  1022. just show up

  1023. to church

  1024. when it's

  1025. convenient for

  1026. you

  1027. when there's

  1028. nothing else

  1029. going on

  1030. that weekend

  1031. you decide

  1032. to pop

  1033. in

  1034. would you

  1035. so desire

  1036. Christian

  1037. fellowship

  1038. to be part

  1039. of the

  1040. work

  1041. of the

  1042. kingdom

  1043. of God

  1044. that you

  1045. would

  1046. work hard

  1047. to get

  1048. enough rest

  1049. on Saturday

  1050. night

  1051. so you're

  1052. ready to

  1053. go

  1054. at the

  1055. very crack

  1056. of dawn

  1057. on Sunday

  1058. morning

  1059. rather than

  1060. just

  1061. incidentally

  1062. you happen

  1063. to get

  1064. enough sleep

  1065. that evening

  1066. would you

  1067. arrange your

  1068. week around

  1069. such activity

  1070. to get to

  1071. be with

  1072. the people

  1073. of God

  1074. to be

  1075. encouraged

  1076. by them

  1077. to go

  1078. back out

  1079. into a

  1080. world

  1081. that is

  1082. hostile

  1083. towards who

  1084. you are

  1085. and to

  1086. what you

  1087. believe

  1088. I hope

  1089. that you

  1090. can answer

  1091. with a

  1092. resounding

  1093. yes

  1094. it would

  1095. be foolish

  1096. for us

  1097. to meet

  1098. early

  1099. but if I

  1100. said

  1101. next week

  1102. we have

  1103. to

  1104. there's

  1105. no way

  1106. around

  1107. some

  1108. threat

  1109. that's

  1110. been

  1111. given

  1112. to

  1113. our

  1114. church

  1115. we have

  1116. to meet

  1117. at dawn

  1118. next week

  1119. that every

  1120. one of you

  1121. would be

  1122. there with

  1123. us

  1124. that all

  1125. of us

  1126. would boldly

  1127. proclaim

  1128. the gospel

  1129. come what

  1130. may

  1131. Paul writes

  1132. in 2nd

  1133. Timothy 3

  1134. 12

  1135. let this

  1136. stick in

  1137. your mind

  1138. indeed

  1139. all who

  1140. desire to

  1141. live a

  1142. godly life

  1143. in Christ

  1144. Jesus

  1145. will

  1146. be

  1147. persecuted

  1148. not

  1149. maybe

  1150. but will

  1151. be

  1152. persecuted

  1153. it's not

  1154. something held

  1155. for a

  1156. select few

  1157. for those

  1158. who are to

  1159. be the

  1160. loudest

  1161. but anyone

  1162. who desires

  1163. to live

  1164. a godly

  1165. life in

  1166. Christ

  1167. Jesus

  1168. and beloved

  1169. anyone

  1170. who has

  1171. been saved

  1172. by Christ

  1173. Jesus

  1174. wants to

  1175. do that

  1176. wants to

  1177. follow him

  1178. wants to

  1179. pick up the

  1180. cross

  1181. wants to

  1182. go wherever

  1183. he leads

  1184. wants to

  1185. turn away

  1186. from the

  1187. world

  1188. and turn

  1189. towards

  1190. righteousness

  1191. will be

  1192. persecuted

  1193. will be

  1194. hated

  1195. in some

  1196. respect

  1197. this shouldn't

  1198. be some

  1199. far removed

  1200. foreign

  1201. theory of

  1202. the Christian

  1203. life

  1204. oh that's

  1205. true of so

  1206. many other

  1207. places and

  1208. so many other

  1209. people but

  1210. not us

  1211. because we

  1212. live here

  1213. in America

  1214. you have to

  1215. ask yourself

  1216. what is

  1217. missing in

  1218. your life

  1219. that prevents

  1220. your

  1221. affliction

  1222. what thing

  1223. are you

  1224. not doing

  1225. or thing

  1226. that you

  1227. are doing

  1228. that is

  1229. preventing

  1230. your

  1231. affliction

  1232. what comfort

  1233. in this

  1234. world do

  1235. you hide

  1236. behind

  1237. what sacrifice

  1238. do you need

  1239. to make

  1240. I think

  1241. that if our

  1242. lives looked

  1243. much more

  1244. sacrificial

  1245. than they

  1246. do

  1247. the way

  1248. in which

  1249. we are

  1250. treated

  1251. in this

  1252. world

  1253. would be

  1254. much

  1255. different

  1256. some

  1257. would

  1258. love

  1259. us

  1260. those

  1261. people

  1262. who love

  1263. Christ

  1264. would be

  1265. drawn

  1266. to us

  1267. those

  1268. people

  1269. who don't

  1270. will

  1271. hate

  1272. us

  1273. that

  1274. should

  1275. be

  1276. the

  1277. response

  1278. not this

  1279. lukewarmness

  1280. not this

  1281. you're okay

  1282. I'm okay

  1283. kind of

  1284. response

  1285. but some

  1286. people should

  1287. absolutely

  1288. hate us

  1289. and what we

  1290. stand for

  1291. and this

  1292. should be

  1293. no surprise

  1294. to us

  1295. and others

  1296. should love

  1297. us

  1298. we would

  1299. be an

  1300. aroma

  1301. to them

  1302. of

  1303. Christ

  1304. the

  1305. contemporary

  1306. Romanian

  1307. pastor

  1308. Joseph

  1309. San

  1310. who

  1311. suffered

  1312. greatly

  1313. at the

  1314. hand

  1315. of

  1316. Russian

  1317. communists

  1318. stated

  1319. Christ's

  1320. suffering

  1321. is for

  1322. propitiation

  1323. our

  1324. suffering

  1325. is for

  1326. propagation

  1327. God

  1328. has always

  1329. used

  1330. suffering

  1331. in this

  1332. way

  1333. and he

  1334. has

  1335. promised

  1336. it to

  1337. us

  1338. the

  1339. seed

  1340. of

  1341. the

  1342. gospel

  1343. is

  1344. sown

  1345. through

  1346. the

  1347. suffering

  1348. of his

  1349. people

  1350. and the

  1351. way

  1352. in which

  1353. we

  1354. suffer

  1355. as well

  1356. it's

  1357. not just

  1358. enough

  1359. that we

  1360. suffer

  1361. but that

  1362. we

  1363. experience

  1364. proclaim

  1365. and display

  1366. the

  1367. supremacy

  1368. of Jesus

  1369. Christ

  1370. in

  1371. our

  1372. suffering

  1373. in

  1374. John

  1375. 12

  1376. 24

  1377. and

  1378. 25

  1379. Jesus

  1380. said

  1381. truly

  1382. truly

  1383. I

  1384. say

  1385. to

  1386. you

  1387. unless

  1388. a

  1389. grain

  1390. of

  1391. wheat

  1392. falls

  1393. into

  1394. the

  1395. earth

  1396. and

  1397. dies

  1398. it

  1399. remains

  1400. alone

  1401. but

  1402. if

  1403. it

  1404. dies

  1405. it

  1406. bears

  1407. much

  1408. fruit

  1409. whoever

  1410. loses

  1411. his

  1412. life

  1413. I'm

  1414. sorry

  1415. whoever

  1416. loves

  1417. his

  1418. life

  1419. loses

  1420. it

  1421. and

  1422. whoever

  1423. hates

  1424. his

  1425. life

  1426. in

  1427. this

  1428. world

  1429. will

  1430. keep

  1431. it

  1432. for

  1433. eternal

  1434. life

  1435. he's

  1436. not

  1437. just

  1438. talking

  1439. about

  1440. martyrs

  1441. at this

  1442. point

  1443. the

  1444. seed

  1445. that

  1446. falls

  1447. into

  1448. the

  1449. ground

  1450. and

  1451. dies

  1452. certainly

  1453. refers

  1454. to

  1455. martyrs

  1456. and

  1457. the

  1458. martyrs

  1459. !

  1460. death

  1461. but

  1462. he's

  1463. referring

  1464. to

  1465. the

  1466. daily

  1467. dying

  1468. of

  1469. disciples

  1470. of

  1471. Jesus

  1472. Christ

  1473. the

  1474. putting

  1475. aside

  1476. of

  1477. our

  1478. desire

  1479. and

  1480. our

  1481. direction

  1482. the

  1483. comfort

  1484. of

  1485. this

  1486. world

  1487. and

  1488. living

  1489. sacrificially

  1490. !

  1491. to

  1492. them

  1493. those

  1494. who

  1495. take

  1496. up

  1497. their

  1498. crosses

  1499. and

  1500. follow

  1501. him

  1502. follow

  1503. the

  1504. example

  1505. of

  1506. his

  1507. life

  1508. and

  1509. his

  1510. death

  1511. I

  1512. feel

  1513. the

  1514. same

  1515. way

  1516. about

  1517. it

  1518. Graham

  1519. our

  1520. Lord

  1521. was a

  1522. suffering

  1523. servant

  1524. servant

  1525. he

  1526. didn't

  1527. come

  1528. and

  1529. live

  1530. a

  1531. pleasure

  1532. life

  1533. John

  1534. 13

  1535. 16

  1536. he

  1537. says

  1538. truly

  1539. truly

  1540. I

  1541. say

  1542. to

  1543. you

  1544. a

  1545. servant

  1546. is

  1547. not

  1548. greater

  1549. than

  1550. his

  1551. master

  1552. nor

  1553. is

  1554. a

  1555. messenger

  1556. greater

  1557. than

  1558. the

  1559. one

  1560. who

  1561. sent

  1562. him

  1563. the

  1564. proper

  1565. Christian

  1566. life

  1567. is

  1568. one

  1569. of

  1570. daily

  1571. death

  1572. it's

  1573. one

  1574. of

  1575. daily

  1576. death

  1577. putting

  1578. aside

  1579. ourselves

  1580. and

  1581. pursuing

  1582. with

  1583. all

  1584. that

  1585. we

  1586. are

  1587. our

  1588. Lord

  1589. and

  1590. Savior

  1591. Jesus

  1592. Christ

  1593. Paul

  1594. gives

  1595. example

  1596. of

  1597. this

  1598. in

  1599. this

  1600. way

  1601. 2nd

  1602. Corinthians

  1603. 4

  1604. 8

  1605. through

  1606. 12

  1607. he

  1608. says

  1609. we

  1610. are

  1611. afflicted

  1612. in

  1613. every

  1614. way

  1615. but

  1616. not

  1617. crushed

  1618. !

  1619. Perplexed

  1620. but

  1621. not

  1622. driven

  1623. to

  1624. despair

  1625. persecuted

  1626. but

  1627. not

  1628. forsaken

  1629. struck

  1630. down

  1631. but

  1632. not

  1633. destroyed

  1634. always

  1635. carrying

  1636. in

  1637. the

  1638. body

  1639. the

  1640. death

  1641. of

  1642. Jesus

  1643. so

  1644. that

  1645. the

  1646. life

  1647. of

  1648. Jesus

  1649. may

  1650. also

  1651. be

  1652. manifested

  1653. in

  1654. our

  1655. bodies

  1656. for

  1657. we

  1658. who

  1659. live

  1660. are

  1661. always

  1662. being

  1663. given

  1664. over

  1665. to

  1666. death

  1667. for

  1668. Jesus

  1669. sake

  1670. so

  1671. that

  1672. the

  1673. life

  1674. of

  1675. Jesus

  1676. also

  1677. may

  1678. be

  1679. manifested

  1680. in

  1681. our

  1682. mortal

  1683. flesh

  1684. so

  1685. death

  1686. is

  1687. at

  1688. work

  1689. in

  1690. us

  1691. but

  1692. life

  1693. in

  1694. you

  1695. and

  1696. what

  1697. he's

  1698. just

  1699. saying

  1700. is

  1701. that

  1702. !

  1703. the

  1704. way

  1705. in

  1706. !

  1707. you

  1708. is

  1709. that

  1710. we

  1711. suffer

  1712. and

  1713. we

  1714. die

  1715. it's

  1716. the

  1717. cycle

  1718. that's

  1719. happening

  1720. in

  1721. our

  1722. lives

  1723. of

  1724. all

  1725. of

  1726. the

  1727. comfort

  1728. and

  1729. all

  1730. the

  1731. things

  1732. of

  1733. this

  1734. world

  1735. being

  1736. stripped

  1737. away

  1738. from

  1739. us

  1740. that

  1741. we

  1742. might

  1743. have

  1744. more

  1745. of

  1746. Christ

  1747. now

  1748. there

  1749. are

  1750. people

  1751. in

  1752. this

  1753. world

  1754. that

  1755. seek

  1756. suffering

  1757. just

  1758. for

  1759. suffering's

  1760. sake

  1761. there

  1762. are

  1763. people

  1764. in

  1765. this

  1766. world

  1767. that

  1768. are

  1769. rightly

  1770. persecuted

  1771. for the

  1772. wrong

  1773. reasons

  1774. though

  1775. they're

  1776. just

  1777. dumb

  1778. about

  1779. the

  1780. way

  1781. they

  1782. go

  1783. about

  1784. doing

  1785. things

  1786. we

  1787. should

  1788. be

  1789. wise

  1790. as

  1791. serpents

  1792. and

  1793. harmless

  1794. as

  1795. doves

  1796. Sam

  1797. Storms

  1798. wrote

  1799. in his

  1800. devotional

  1808. Glory

  1809. Suffering

  1813. a

  1814. reproach

  1815. suffering

  1816. for

  1817. suffering's

  1819. is

  1820. perverted

  1821. suffering

  1822. for

  1823. the

  1824. sake

  1825. of

  1826. Christ

  1827. and

  1839. Peter

  1840. writes

  1841. rejoice

  1842. in so

  1843. far

  1844. as

  1845. you

  1846. share

  1847. Christ's

  1848. sufferings

  1849. that

  1850. you

  1851. may

  1852. also

  1853. rejoice

  1854. and

  1855. be

  1856. glad

  1857. when

  1858. his

  1859. glory

  1860. is

  1861. revealed

  1862. if

  1863. you

  1864. are

  1865. insulted

  1866. for

  1867. the

  1868. name

  1869. of

  1870. Christ

  1871. you

  1872. are

  1873. blessed

  1874. because

  1875. the

  1876. spirit

  1877. of

  1878. glory

  1879. and

  1880. of

  1881. God

  1882. rests

  1883. upon

  1884. you

  1885. but

  1886. let

  1887. none

  1888. of

  1889. you

  1890. suffer

  1891. as

  1892. a

  1893. murderer

  1894. or

  1895. a

  1896. thief

  1897. or

  1898. an

  1899. evildoer

  1900. or

  1901. as

  1902. a

  1903. meddler

  1904. he's

  1905. saying

  1906. don't

  1907. pervert

  1908. that

  1909. kind

  1910. of

  1911. suffering

  1912. to be

  1913. about

  1914. suffering

  1915. for

  1916. the

  1917. name

  1918. of

  1919. Christ

  1920. verse

  1921. 16

  1922. yet

  1923. if

  1924. anyone

  1925. suffers

  1926. as

  1927. a

  1928. Christian

  1929. let

  1930. him

  1931. not

  1932. be

  1933. ashamed

  1934. but

  1935. let

  1936. him

  1937. glorify

  1938. God

  1939. in

  1940. that

  1941. name

  1942. and

  1943. all

  1944. this

  1945. is

  1946. why

  1947. Paul

  1948. was

  1949. able

  1950. to

  1951. say

  1952. now

  1953. I

  1954. rejoice

  1955. !

  1956. in

  1957. my

  1958. sufferings

  1959. how

  1960. odd

  1961. right

  1962. he's

  1963. able

  1964. to

  1965. rejoice

  1966. in

  1967. his

  1968. suffering

  1969. suffering

  1970. for the

  1971. name

  1972. of

  1973. Christ

  1976. join

  1977. Christ

  1978. in

  1979. his

  1980. suffering

  1981. and

  1982. this

  1983. is

  1984. why

  1985. this

  1986. was

  1987. so

  1988. precious

  1989. to

  1990. Paul

  1991. right

  1992. there's

  1993. a

  1994. wonderful

  1995. example

  1996. of

  1997. it

  1998. in

  1999. the

  2049. in

  2050. that

  2052. for a

  2053. moment

  2054. you're

  2055. caught

  2056. speaking

  2074. what

  2075. would

  2076. be

  2077. your

  2078. response

  2079. to

  2080. that

  2081. how

  2082. would

  2083. you

  2084. feel

  2085. about

  2086. !

  2087. that

  2103. face

  2104. of

  2119. that

  2120. the

  2121. Christ

  2122. is

  2123. Jesus

  2124. beloved

  2125. if you're

  2127. okay

  2128. with

  2129. this

  2130. teaching

  2131. then

  2132. you

  2133. do

  2134. not

  2135. treasure

  2136. Christ

  2137. the

  2138. way

  2139. you

  2140. ought

  2141. to

  2142. if

  2143. you're

  2144. sitting

  2145. here

  2146. and

  2147. you're

  2148. saying

  2149. wait

  2150. a

  2151. second

  2152. !

  2153. what

  2154. you're

  2155. !

  2156. if

  2157. I'm

  2158. really

  2159. going

  2160. to

  2161. follow

  2162. Jesus

  2163. Christ

  2164. that

  2165. I'm

  2166. inviting

  2167. suffering

  2168. I'm

  2169. inviting

  2170. affliction

  2171. that's

  2172. going

  2173. to

  2174. be

  2175. a

  2176. reality

  2177. of

  2178. my

  2179. life

  2180. and

  2181. my

  2182. response

  2183. to

  2184. you

  2185. is

  2186. assuredly

  2187. yes

  2188. if

  2189. you're

  2190. not

  2191. experiencing

  2192. suffering

  2193. something's

  2194. wrong

  2195. something's

  2196. amiss

  2197. in your

  2198. life

  2199. we need

  2200. to be

  2201. observing

  2202. that

  2203. we need

  2204. to be

  2205. introspective

  2206. about

  2207. that

  2208. we need

  2209. to be

  2210. asking

  2211. !

  2212. if

  2213. the

  2214. Lord

  2215. would

  2216. show

  2217. us

  2218. ways

  2219. in

  2220. which

  2221. we're

  2222. being

  2223. disobedient

  2224. to

  2225. his

  2226. call

  2227. in

  2228. the

  2229. gospel

  2230. ways

  2231. in

  2232. which

  2233. we

  2234. don't

  2235. carry

  2236. our

  2237. cross

  2238. this

  2239. is

  2240. what

  2241. I'm

  2242. saying

  2243. to

  2244. you

  2245. and

  2246. if

  2247. you're

  2248. not

  2249. okay

  2250. with

  2251. that

  2252. then

  2253. you

  2254. don't

  2255. love

  2256. Jesus

  2257. the

  2258. way

  2259. you

  2260. should

  2261. you

  2262. don't

  2263. treasure

  2264. him

  2265. the

  2266. way

  2267. that

  2268. you

  2269. ought

  2270. to

  2271. you

  2272. have

  2273. not

  2274. counted

  2275. the

  2276. cost

  2277. of

  2278. following

  2279. Jesus

  2280. Christ

  2281. it

  2282. will

  2283. cost

  2284. you

  2285. everything

  2286. Matthew

  2287. 13

  2288. 44

  2289. Jesus

  2290. said

  2291. the

  2292. kingdom

  2293. of

  2294. heaven

  2295. treasure

  2296. hidden

  2297. in

  2298. a

  2299. field

  2300. which

  2301. a

  2302. man

  2303. found

  2304. and

  2305. covered

  2306. up

  2307. then

  2308. in

  2309. his

  2310. joy

  2311. he

  2312. goes

  2313. and

  2314. sells

  2315. all

  2316. that

  2317. he

  2318. has

  2319. and

  2320. he

  2321. buys

  2322. that

  2323. field

  2324. Christ

  2325. is a

  2326. more

  2327. supreme

  2328. thing

  2329. so

  2330. much

  2331. higher

  2332. and

  2333. cannot

  2334. be

  2335. lost

  2336. so

  2337. we

  2338. give

  2339. away

  2340. all

  2341. those

  2342. things

  2343. that

  2344. are

  2345. temporal

  2346. in

  2347. our

  2348. lives

  2349. all

  2350. of

  2351. our

  2352. wealth

  2353. and

  2354. all

  2355. of

  2356. our

  2357. health

  2358. all

  2359. of

  2360. the

  2361. comfort

  2362. in

  2363. order

  2364. to

  2365. have

  2366. more

  2367. of

  2368. him

  2369. Paul

  2370. rejoiced

  2371. in his

  2372. sufferings

  2373. because

  2374. he knew

  2375. that it

  2376. was for

  2377. the gain

  2378. of the

  2379. Colossian

  2380. church

  2381. he knew

  2382. that it

  2383. was best

  2384. it was

  2385. part of

  2386. God's

  2387. purpose

  2388. in

  2389. Christ

  2390. for the

  2391. Colossian

  2392. church

  2393. to

  2394. witness

  2395. his

  2396. suffering

  2397. and he

  2398. could

  2399. rejoice

  2400. in that

  2401. these

  2402. larger

  2403. things

  2404. this

  2405. heavenward

  2406. perspective

  2407. in

  2408. conclusion

  2409. suffering

  2410. is a

  2411. primary

  2412. means

  2413. by

  2414. which

  2415. we

  2416. are to

  2417. spread

  2418. the

  2419. gospel

  2420. of

  2421. reconciliation

  2422. to

  2423. all

  2424. the

  2425. peoples

  2426. of

  2427. the

  2428. world

  2429. in

  2430. order

  2431. to

  2432. yield

  2433. God

  2434. centered

  2435. Christ

  2436. exalting

  2437. churches

  2438. after

  2439. all

  2440. Christ

  2441. family

  2442. church

  2443. exists

  2444. to

  2445. glorify

  2446. God

  2447. by

  2448. experiencing

  2449. proclaiming

  2450. and

  2451. displaying

  2452. the

  2453. supremacy

  2454. of

  2455. Jesus

  2456. Christ

  2457. in

  2458. all

  2459. things

  2460. to

  2461. all

  2462. peoples

  2463. beloved

  2464. we must

  2465. ask

  2466. ourselves

  2467. if we

  2468. are

  2469. living

  2470. to

  2471. this

  2472. high

  2473. mark

  2474. as

  2475. a

  2476. community

  2477. of

  2478. faith

  2479. I'm

  2480. confident

  2481. that we

  2482. have

  2483. much

  2484. work

  2485. to

  2486. do

  2487. let

  2488. us

  2489. then

  2490. together

  2491. yield

  2492. ourselves

  2493. to

  2494. the

  2495. will

  2496. of

  2497. the

  2498. Father

  2499. live

  2500. such

  2501. radically

  2502. God

  2503. oriented

  2504. lives

  2505. that

  2506. come

  2507. what

  2508. may

  2509. we

  2510. will

  2511. hold

  2512. high

  2513. the

  2514. supremacy

  2515. of

  2516. Jesus

  2517. Christ

  2518. so

  2519. that

  2520. God

  2521. will

  2522. draw

  2523. men

  2524. to

  2525. himself

  2526. let's

  2527. pray

  2528. together
