  1. Please take your copy of God's Word and turn to Paul's letter to the church at Colossae.

  2. At the risk of giving you ammunition to mess with me during a sermon.

  3. A little over a year ago, I had a hard time getting my notes to print on a Sunday morning.

  4. And as such, I just grabbed the iPad and pulled up the information on it and preached that Sunday

  5. and discovered that I love it because I can see it. I'm getting a bit older, my eyes are getting harder,

  6. and this light's a bit bright. Such a wonderful, wonderful thing.

  7. But I get text messages on my iPad. And from time to time, I'll get a text message.

  8. It pops up at the top of the screen. It's kind of funny.

  9. And just now I got a text, but from four days ago, from my father that said, please call me.

  10. So I just opened my iPad and went, what? Not now.

  11. Well, but it came many days later onto the iPad, apparently.

  12. So don't text me during the service.

  13. It's ultimately the moral of that. But four days ago, you're certainly welcome to.

  14. Our text today is Colossians 2, verses 4 through 8.

    Colossians 2:4–8

  15. Before I read it, though, I want to remind you where we've been in our text.

  16. The church at Colossae is a fairly unsubstantial church in our definition of what is substantial.

  17. A small group of believers in a very small, insignificant town.

  18. I don't remember the exact history as I presented it to you at the beginning of our study,

  19. but the Romans had moved the major highway around Colossae and went through Laodicea,

  20. and Colossae was just kind of left in the middle of nowhere.

  21. This wasn't a church that Paul established.

  22. It's most likely that Epaphras, who's mentioned in the letter multiple times,

  23. carried the gospel from Ephesus, where Paul was, back to his hometown,

  24. saw converts and started a church there.

  25. And it's also most likely that it's Epaphras who has come to Paul while he's in prison.

  26. We think in Roman imprisonment.

  27. We do know that he's in prison.

  28. We're not sure exactly where, but more than likely in Roman imprisonment.

  29. And has come to him and asked for his help in correcting some erroneous doctrine,

  30. some heresy that's encircling the church and possibly making some inroads into the church.

  31. We don't know the exact nature of that heresy.

  32. In some of Paul's other letters, it's much more clear,

  33. specifically the heresies of the day that he's addressing.

  34. Here we're not entirely sure, but in some way or another,

  35. as most heresies concerning Christianity do,

  36. these people seem to be denying the deity of Christ,

  37. that he was himself actually God,

  38. because Paul so clearly addresses that beginning in verse 15.

  39. And they seem to, in some way, be attacking the sufficiency of Christ,

  40. that faith in Christ is what brings salvation and adding work to that,

  41. as he expounds upon, oh, interspersed amongst 12, 13, down 19, down through 23.

  42. So these seem to be the two issues of the day,

  43. which are fairly massive heresies.

  44. I hope for our church and for most Christian churches this morning,

  45. that if these types of things were being taught,

  46. denying that Jesus Christ is himself God,

  47. or that we must work in order to maintain our salvation,

  48. that these people would be fairly readily shut down.

  49. So as we come to these texts, sometimes it feels distant to us.

  50. We seem to live in a place where these aren't great challenges.

  51. But I would put forth to you that they are, in fact.

  52. That there are many ways in which the world and the enemy

  53. is trying to deceive us about who Jesus is.

  54. It just seems to be much more subversive these days,

  55. much more, as we live in such a Christian culture, deceptive.

  56. So it's important that we, especially important, I think,

  57. that we draw our attention to how it is that Paul addresses

  58. and what it is he's trying to press upon the Colossian believers

  59. and how it is we ought to also take up these things

  60. in order to stand firm in Christ.

  61. So beginning in verse 4, I read,

  62. I say this in order that no one may delude you with plausible arguments.

  63. For though I am absent in the body, yet I am with you in spirit,

  64. rejoicing to see your good order and the firmness of your faith in Christ.

  65. Therefore, as you receive Christ Jesus, Lord, so walk in him,

  66. rooted and built up in him and established in the faith,

  67. just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.

  68. See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit

  69. according to human tradition,

  70. according to the elemental spirits of the world,

  71. and not according to Christ.

  72. This is God's word to us.

  73. It was written for his glory and our good.

  74. We would all do well to listen to it in order to believe its promises

  75. and obey its commands.

  76. So Paul directly takes on here these doctrinal heresies.

  77. And again, the application is there's many such challenges to our faith today.

  78. And this is why, and this will be the outline for the text today,

  79. that disciples of Jesus Christ, true disciples,

  80. those who have placed their faith in his saving work,

  81. number one, must have a resolute understanding.

  82. Number two, must walk in him.

  83. And number three, must abound in thanksgiving.

  84. So firstly, disciples of Jesus Christ must have a resolute understanding

  85. of who their Lord is and of our salvation.

  86. This is imperative for us, beloved.

  87. And in fact, he in caps this text today with two charges for this.

  88. Verse four, I say this in order that no one may delude you with plausible arguments.

  89. And verse eight, see to it that no one takes you captive.

  90. And then he lists off a number of ways in which this can take place,

  91. which we'll address in a moment.

  92. We have to pay attention to the very beginning of verse four,

  93. where he says, I say this in order that.

  94. What is the this that he is referring to?

  95. And last week, we fairly glanced over verses two and three of chapter two.

  96. And now I want to kind of help tie that in here

  97. as Paul speaks of his struggle on behalf of the Colossian believers.

  98. And then in verse two, he writes that their hearts may be encouraged,

  99. being knit together in love to reach all the riches of full assurance of understanding

  100. and the knowledge of God's mystery, which is Christ,

  101. in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and of knowledge.

  102. So his struggle on their behalf, even though he hasn't seen these people,

  103. his struggle on their behalf in prayer,

  104. his struggle on their behalf in the writing of this letter,

  105. his struggle in that he's going to send faithful workers to them,

  106. is that they would have a full assurance of understanding

  107. and the knowledge of God's mystery, which is Christ,

  108. that they would know Christ,

  109. that they would understand who Christ is and who he is to them,

  110. that they would get a clear and full confidence in Christ's deity

  111. and his sufficiency, as I referenced earlier in chapter one.

  112. This is who Jesus is.

  113. Fully God, yet man, come to earth,

  114. lived a perfect life that we may have his righteousness,

  115. bore on the cross the wrath for our sin,

  116. ascended and seated at the right hand of the Father,

  117. now making intercession for us,

  118. will one day come back and judge the world,

  119. will separate the righteous from the unrighteous,

  120. the righteous for eternal glory,

  121. the unrighteous to eternal damnation.

  122. This is our Christ.

  123. And we must have a very clear understanding of who he is

  124. and that his work was sufficient for the saving of us,

  125. that we must simply believe that it is his work

  126. that accomplished this thing on our behalf.

  127. 1 Timothy 3.16

  128. And what very likely was a first century hymn,

  129. Paul beautifully writes,

  130. maybe somebody else wrote it and he's simply quoting it,

  131. but verse 16,

  132. Great indeed, we confess,

  133. is the mystery of godliness.

  134. Being Christ.

  135. The mystery of godliness.

  136. He was manifested in the flesh,

  137. vindicated by the Spirit,

  138. seen by angels,

  139. proclaimed among the nations,

  140. believed on in the world,

  141. taken up in glory.

  142. So it is Christ

  143. that we must have a resolute understanding of.

  144. And as with Paul's writing,

  145. as it's so beautiful,

  146. and there's so much depth to it,

  147. it has to be unraveled.

  148. In verses 2 and 3,

  149. this is the maybe even a bit trite summation

  150. of what he's trying to say.

  151. Christ.

  152. The treasure of wisdom and knowledge.

  153. It's Him that we must know.

  154. And we must know Him

  155. so that no one may delude us

  156. with plausible arguments.

  157. This idea of delusion

  158. is simply to be led astray,

  159. to be confused by,

  160. to be, as he says later,

  161. taken captive by.

  162. And he uses this interesting language

  163. of plausible arguments,

  164. which I appreciate.

  165. It means that people who believe in other things

  166. aren't entirely insane in the world,

  167. but these are persuasive arguments

  168. that people are making.

  169. They're arguments that contain within them

  170. some bit of truth.

  171. All believable lies

  172. contain within them some truth.

  173. To be able to grasp it,

  174. to be able to understand it.

  175. An example to this,

  176. if I told you a story

  177. that yesterday I met

  178. and was punched by Mike Tyson,

  179. you'd be very unlikely to believe me.

  180. Thinking that,

  181. how is it possible

  182. that Nathan met Mike Tyson yesterday?

  183. What if I told you

  184. that my wife punched me yesterday?

  185. Well, she didn't.

  186. But it'd be much more believable

  187. because I see her all the time

  188. and I certainly deserve to get punched

  189. at times as well.

  190. You see that in order for something

  191. to be believable,

  192. it has to contain some truth within it

  193. that resonates within us.

  194. So there's a truth mixed with the error.

  195. So these arguments are plausible.

  196. They could sound to us at times like,

  197. oh, well that sounds pretty good.

  198. Do you know people like that

  199. or are you that person possibly?

  200. That it's very easy and simple

  201. for somebody to convince you?

  202. You may be convinced of one thing

  203. and they make a simple argument

  204. and now you're suddenly convinced

  205. of the opposite of that very thing.

  206. So easily swayed back and forth

  207. by plausible arguments.

  208. This has been promised to us

  209. that in the future of the church,

  210. Paul writes much about this,

  211. that there would be false prophets.

  212. There would be people

  213. who would come in amongst the church

  214. and lead members of that church astray

  215. with plausible arguments.

  216. There's much strong warning given against this

  217. in the scriptures.

  218. It should be no surprise to us

  219. that we need to be firmed up in our faith,

  220. that we need to contend for the truth

  221. because this is a thing that's repeated again

  222. and again and again.

  223. A couple quick examples of that.

  224. 2 Corinthians 11, 13-15.

  225. Paul writes,

  226. For such men are false apostles,

  227. deceitful workmen,

  228. disguising themselves as apostles of Christ.

  229. Sounds so good

  230. because they're coming in the name of Jesus.

  231. In verse 14,

  232. And no wonder,

  233. for even Satan disguises himself

  234. as an angel of light.

  235. People come and they say good things

  236. that resonate with us

  237. and then they slip in underneath

  238. the falsehood, the lies,

  239. those things that lead us astray.

  240. Verse 15,

  241. So it is no surprise

  242. if his servants also disguise themselves

  243. as servants of righteousness.

  244. It's difficult to discern these people at times

  245. if we're not founded in the truth

  246. of who Christ is.

  247. The end of verse 15 says

  248. their end will correspond to their deeds.

  249. Paul wrote to the Galatian believers,

  250. chapter 1, verses 6-9,

  251. I am astonished that you are so quickly

  252. deserting Him who called you

  253. in the grace of Christ

  254. and are turning to a different gospel.

  255. Here are people already being turned

  256. by plausible argument.

  257. Verse 7,

  258. Not that there is another one.

  259. There is no other gospel.

  260. There's one true good news.

  261. But there are some who trouble you

  262. and want to distort the gospel of Christ.

  263. The great heresy we know

  264. for the Galatian church

  265. was from the Judaizers

  266. who said that Jesus is good and acceptable.

  267. You can believe in Jesus

  268. and you can follow Jesus,

  269. but you also must obey the law.

  270. You must keep the practice of the Jews

  271. and therefore you must be circumcised.

  272. This was the great thing

  273. that Paul is addressing

  274. to the Galatian church.

  275. Verse 8 he says,

  276. But even if we or an angel from heaven

  277. should preach to you

  278. a gospel contrary to the one

  279. we preach to you,

  280. let him be accursed.

  281. That is, cut off from the grace of God.

  282. As we have said before,

  283. so now I say again,

  284. if anyone is preaching to you

  285. a gospel contrary to the one you received,

  286. let him be accursed.

  287. And it's a challenge in our day, beloved.

  288. It's so very, very difficult

  289. because there's so few people I know

  290. that are so blatantly heretical.

  291. The kind of people,

  292. you just want them almost like

  293. people our day,

  294. preachers our day,

  295. I just want them to step across that line

  296. just so I can say,

  297. no, never listen to that man.

  298. But there's good stuff happening

  299. and I think good motivation

  300. and intention happening.

  301. I listen fairly often

  302. to conservative talk radio.

  303. The CD player doesn't work in my truck

  304. so the radio comes on

  305. when I'm driving places.

  306. And there's often a previous

  307. Southern Baptist leader,

  308. currently the pastor

  309. of a rather large church

  310. in the Atlanta area,

  311. and he has these little moments

  312. that he gets on and shares something.

  313. And they're usually incredibly good.

  314. More often than not,

  315. I really appreciate

  316. the things he has to say.

  317. He takes these big grand truths

  318. about who God is

  319. and he brings them down

  320. in a simple way

  321. to a broad audience.

  322. I really appreciate it.

  323. This week, however,

  324. he started off by talking about

  325. how in racing,

  326. people look for

  327. every little competitive edge

  328. they can get.

  329. The tenths of a second matter

  330. in racing.

  331. And so they're always trying

  332. to find the way racers are

  333. that they can just

  334. get a little bit

  335. of a competitive edge.

  336. And then he went on to say

  337. that in life,

  338. Jesus is our competitive edge

  339. in our race.

  340. Oh my gosh,

  341. like I just wanted to tackle him

  342. and stop the broadcast

  343. of it all.

  344. That's not the case at all.

  345. Jesus puts us in a different race.

  346. He shatters the race.

  347. He says this is a pointless,

  348. fruitless race,

  349. and he puts us on another track.

  350. Completely different.

  351. And then we run after him.

  352. He's not a competitive edge.

  353. He is the goal.

  354. He is the prize

  355. of the race that we run.

  356. So you have to be so careful

  357. about what you take in

  358. and what you hear

  359. and where the foundation is

  360. for your understanding

  361. of truth.

  362. Bookended again.

  363. Plausible arguments.

  364. This is a man

  365. that people listen to

  366. and probably just consumed

  367. what he had to say.

  368. He said,

  369. oh, that's very good.

  370. Competitive edge.

  371. I like it.

  372. This bookending, though,

  373. goes on in verse 8.

  374. See to it that no one

  375. takes you captive

  376. literally means to kidnap,

  377. right?

  378. To bag up and take away

  379. by philosophy, right?

  380. This is not referring

  381. to our modern study

  382. of general and fundamental problems,

  383. but it's a much broader term,

  384. which certainly can include

  385. our modern philosophy,

  386. but also allows for

  387. religious sex.

  388. Just as an example,

  389. the first century historian

  390. Josephus wrote in Jewish Wars,

  391. there are three philosophical,

  392. same Greek word,

  393. sex among the Jews.

  394. So it allowed for that,

  395. a much looser term

  396. of philosophy,

  397. ways of thinking,

  398. worldview.

  399. Don't be taken captive

  400. by the varying worldviews

  401. that are out there

  402. or by empty deceit.

  403. Certainly the Colossian heretics

  404. and those of our day

  405. would have found great value

  406. in their teaching,

  407. believed it.

  408. Otherwise,

  409. they wouldn't teach it.

  410. But Paul here deems it

  411. empty and deceitful,

  412. of no value whatsoever.

  413. According to human tradition,

  414. which is to say that

  415. just because somebody

  416. believed it before,

  417. in the past,

  418. doesn't make it true.

  419. It doesn't necessarily

  420. make it true.

  421. It's of interest

  422. for us today

  423. to study church history

  424. because it informs

  425. so much about what we believe.

  426. If you tend to believe something

  427. that most of Christianity

  428. has deemed a heresy,

  429. you're probably wrong.

  430. There's some value

  431. in looking at the church itself.

  432. I would encourage you

  433. to look at the great heresies

  434. that have come

  435. and been squashed

  436. throughout the days

  437. of the church

  438. and find that you may believe

  439. some of those things

  440. and may have,

  441. at one point in history,

  442. been burned for it.

  443. Human tradition

  444. is not the reason

  445. that we believe things

  446. to be true.

  447. It can have some value,

  448. but you never say

  449. just because,

  450. just because

  451. grandma and grandpa,

  452. just because

  453. mom and dad,

  454. therefore it must be.

  455. The standard for our truth

  456. is the Scripture,

  457. is Christ.

  458. according to the

  459. elemental spirits

  460. of the world.

  461. Now there's a lot of conjecture

  462. about what this

  463. could mean.

  464. I think the simplest explanation

  465. is the proper explanation,

  466. so I'm just going to give you

  467. that one.

  468. If you are interested,

  469. I would encourage you

  470. to study it

  471. on your own time.

  472. The phrase

  473. elemental spirits

  474. is a single noun

  475. and it refers,

  476. its weightiest definition

  477. is referring to

  478. the letters of the alphabet,

  479. the way the letters

  480. of the alphabet

  481. come in order.

  482. The suggestion seems to be

  483. that Paul is stating

  484. that to believe in heresy

  485. is to descend

  486. to foolishness.

  487. Having been enlightened,

  488. having been taught

  489. the glorious truth,

  490. it's to come back down

  491. to the more base things.

  492. It's like a child

  493. learns to read

  494. and then they go back

  495. to just like learning ABCs.

  496. You already know your ABCs.

  497. Move on to the reading.

  498. This seems to be

  499. what he's communing.

  500. It's a regression

  501. in one's understanding.

  502. He's juxtaposing,

  503. I think,

  504. the mature teaching

  505. of Christ's deity

  506. and sufficiency

  507. to the childish teachings

  508. that oppose his deity

  509. and his sufficiency

  510. that would suggest

  511. that Jesus was just a man

  512. and would suggest

  513. that we can somehow

  514. work and earn

  515. our salvation.

  516. This same language

  517. is used elsewhere,

  518. Galatians 4.3.

  519. In the same way,

  520. we also,

  521. before we were

  522. in the faith,

  523. when we were children,

  524. were enslaved

  525. to the elementary principles

  526. of the world.

  527. Same phrase,

  528. elementary principles

  529. and elemental spirit

  530. used in both places.

  531. I think this is what

  532. he's trying to say.

  533. It's childish

  534. to believe such things

  535. that are,

  536. the end of verse 8,

  537. not according

  538. to Christ.

  539. So anything that is

  540. in opposition

  541. to who he is,

  542. the things that he has

  543. accomplished

  544. are heretical.

  545. So,

  546. we must know

  547. who Christ is

  548. and have an understanding,

  549. a resolute understanding

  550. of who Christ is.

  551. So how does that

  552. come to pass?

  553. How do we foster

  554. a resolute understanding

  555. of who Christ is

  556. and what he's accomplished

  557. as deity

  558. and his sufficiently?

  559. Two quick points to that.

  560. Firstly,

  561. prayerfully

  562. read the text

  563. in its context.

  564. That's the exhortation.

  565. Prayerfully

  566. read the text

  567. in its context.

  568. Before you ever come

  569. to the Word of God,

  570. which completely speaks

  571. of Christ,

  572. we need the Holy Spirit's

  573. illumination.

  574. We need His illumination.

  575. We need Him

  576. to give us

  577. spiritual eyes

  578. to understand rightly

  579. what is contained

  580. within this book.

  581. It was spiritually inspired.

  582. It was given to us

  583. by God

  584. and we need Him

  585. to help us

  586. understand it rightly.

  587. There's a wrong way

  588. to read this book,

  589. beloved.

  590. We must read it rightly.

  591. We must prayerfully,

  592. we must ask,

  593. we must come to the Word of God

  594. on our knees.

  595. This is why Paul prays

  596. for the Ephesian church

  597. as we see recorded

  598. in Ephesians 1.18

  599. that the eyes

  600. of their hearts

  601. would be enlightened.

  602. That they would understand

  603. the truth

  604. of the Gospel.

  605. So read it prayerfully.

  606. And read it.

  607. Prayerfully,

  608. read the text.

  609. We never,

  610. never

  611. outgrow

  612. our need

  613. of the Scripture.

  614. This is such

  615. a beautifully complex

  616. book

  617. in the way that God

  618. has orchestrated

  619. its writing

  620. and the way

  621. in which He uses it

  622. in application

  623. to our life.

  624. I am continually

  625. astounded

  626. at the way

  627. that God speaks

  628. to me

  629. through His Word.

  630. It still blows my mind.

  631. Texts that I am

  632. so incredibly

  633. familiar with.

  634. Things that I can

  635. rattle off to you.

  636. And I'll go back

  637. and reread it

  638. and a phrase

  639. will like stamp me

  640. on the forehead

  641. as if I've never

  642. seen it before.

  643. It's alive

  644. and it's active

  645. because the Spirit

  646. uses it as a tool

  647. to change us

  648. from one degree

  649. of glory

  650. to the next.

  651. 99% of the time

  652. someone comes

  653. to me for counsel

  654. and we're talking

  655. about what's going

  656. on in their life

  657. and I ask them

  658. have you been

  659. consistently

  660. prayerfully

  661. reading your Bible?

  662. The answer is

  663. no.

  664. It's incredible.

  665. Go.

  666. Read your Bible.

  667. Ask that God

  668. would work the truth

  669. into your life

  670. and then come back

  671. and let's talk.

  672. He uses the church

  673. as a tool.

  674. But you have to be

  675. practicing these things

  676. beloved.

  677. You have problems

  678. in your life

  679. and we all do.

  680. Go to the Scriptures

  681. for them.

  682. They're sufficient

  683. to give us

  684. the guide

  685. for holy living.

  686. You must read

  687. the text.

  688. You never,

  689. ever,

  690. ever outgrow

  691. your need of it.

  692. You never become

  693. so familiar with it

  694. that meditation

  695. becomes unnecessary

  696. for you.

  697. You've heard me say

  698. before that no doctrine

  699. stays alive in the mind.

  700. No truth just

  701. automatically gets

  702. in our heads

  703. and stays in our heads

  704. and has effect

  705. in our lives.

  706. It must be fed.

  707. You must continually

  708. remind yourself

  709. of the truth

  710. of the Gospel.

  711. Sunday morning's

  712. not enough.

  713. Necessary,

  714. good,

  715. valuable,

  716. important.

  717. Please come and hear

  718. the preaching

  719. of God's Word.

  720. But it's not enough.

  721. You have to be

  722. in this book.

  723. If you spent

  724. all summer with us,

  725. the only thing

  726. you're going to hear

  727. about is the book

  728. of Colossians.

  729. Go study something

  730. else as well.

  731. And I'm in no way

  732. suggesting legalism

  733. to you.

  734. You have to get up

  735. at a certain time.

  736. You have to do

  737. this many minutes

  738. in the Bible,

  739. etc.

  740. But it ought to be

  741. the meditation

  742. of your life.

  743. You ought to be

  744. continually considering

  745. what it is

  746. the Word of God

  747. has to say

  748. to you.

  749. Psalm 1, 1, and 2.

  750. Blessed is the man

  751. who walks not

  752. in the counsel

  753. of the wicked,

  754. nor stands in the way

  755. of sinners,

  756. nor sits in the seat

  757. of scoffers.

  758. Happy is the man

  759. who's not this man,

  760. but instead,

  761. verse 2,

  762. but his delight

  763. is in the law

  764. of the Lord.

  765. Not a labor for him,

  766. but his delight,

  767. his joy,

  768. is to come

  769. to the fountainhead

  770. of God's truth

  771. and impact

  772. in our lives.

  773. His delight

  774. is in the law

  775. of the Lord,

  776. and on his law,

  777. he meditates

  778. day and night.

  779. I know very few people

  780. who can meditate

  781. on the law

  782. of the Lord

  783. day and night

  784. and not spend time

  785. reading it.

  786. I shouldn't even say

  787. very few.

  788. I don't think

  789. I know anybody

  790. who could do

  791. such a thing.

  792. There are days

  793. that I don't

  794. open the Scripture

  795. for the study

  796. of my own soul

  797. because there's

  798. something that's

  799. running around

  800. inside my head

  801. from the day before.

  802. Something I've learned.

  803. Something that's

  804. stuck with me

  805. and I'm still

  806. in the process

  807. of meditating

  808. on that very thing.

  809. So it isn't to say

  810. that you've got to

  811. have your quiet time

  812. every single morning,

  813. but you need to

  814. if you want to have

  815. a life that's fulfilling

  816. and beneficial

  817. and honors God.

  818. You need to be

  819. in the Scripture.

  820. Constantly.

  821. Constantly letting it

  822. work through you.

  823. So prayerfully

  824. read the text.

  825. It's a jewel,

  826. a gift given to us.

  827. And prayerfully

  828. read the text

  829. in its context.

  830. Both immediate

  831. context

  832. and broader context.

  833. And I'm saying this

  834. and I'm adding this

  835. phrase to the end

  836. of this because

  837. there are so many

  838. people who spend

  839. lots of time

  840. in the Bible

  841. and misunderstand

  842. it completely.

  843. A very favorite

  844. verse of so many

  845. people.

  846. And I hope I'm not

  847. squashing your

  848. favorite verse

  849. right now,

  850. but it's Philippians

  851. 4.13.

  852. I can do all things

  853. through him

  854. who strengthens me.

  855. Athletes love

  856. Philippians 4.13.

  857. It seems that

  858. they believe that

  859. God's great concern

  860. is that they win

  861. games.

  862. It's not.

  863. It's not what

  864. Paul's even talking

  865. about at all.

  866. Does it include that

  867. as a much lesser

  868. thing?

  869. Yeah, sure.

  870. Can we do anything

  871. apart from Jesus?

  872. No.

  873. There's some element,

  874. some kernel of truth

  875. contained within there.

  876. But if we back up

  877. just a little bit,

  878. oh, I don't know,

  879. read the chapter

  880. before we make this

  881. our favorite verse.

  882. Beginning in the

  883. last half of verse

  884. 11, Paul says,

  885. I have learned in

  886. whatever situation

  887. I am to be content.

  888. Verse 12,

  889. I know how to be

  890. brought low

  891. and I know how to

  892. abound.

  893. And Paul's version

  894. of abounding

  895. is not our version

  896. of abounding.

  897. In any and every

  898. circumstance,

  899. I have learned

  900. the secret of

  901. facing plenty

  902. and hunger,

  903. abundance and need.

  904. Paul is talking

  905. about in the midst

  906. of his struggle

  907. in advancing

  908. the kingdom of God,

  909. that he's able

  910. to walk through

  911. the trials

  912. as well as

  913. the comfortable

  914. times because

  915. he can do all things

  916. through Christ

  917. who strengthens him.

  918. The context

  919. matters a lot

  920. for these verses.

  921. Another great

  922. example in a broad

  923. sense,

  924. to understand

  925. the scriptures,

  926. another favorite

  927. of many peoples,

  928. Jeremiah 29.11.

  929. For I know the plans

  930. I have for you,

  931. declares the Lord,

  932. plans for welfare

  933. and not for evil,

  934. to give you a future

  935. and a hope.

  936. You need to know

  937. the broader context

  938. of what's happening

  939. and who the you is

  940. in this particular text.

  941. God is making a promise

  942. to exiled Israel.

  943. Israel.

  944. So,

  945. unless you're an Israelite

  946. in Babylonian captivity,

  947. this promise

  948. is not for you.

  949. A lot of

  950. health and wealth

  951. is based

  952. on this verse.

  953. Right?

  954. Subversively,

  955. subliminally,

  956. based on this verse.

  957. Recently,

  958. I went to a dance

  959. recital for my niece

  960. and the church building

  961. that the dance

  962. recital was in.

  963. Had this verse

  964. painted on the wall

  965. huge

  966. when you first walked in.

  967. And what it seems

  968. to communicate to people,

  969. the way people quote it

  970. all the time,

  971. is that God has

  972. welfare plans

  973. for us.

  974. Future and hope.

  975. It's not what the verse means.

  976. Certainly,

  977. we can look at God's character.

  978. We can go other places

  979. in the Scripture

  980. to see that God

  981. has a great deal of care

  982. and compassion for us.

  983. We can see that He has

  984. our good in mind,

  985. but defined much differently

  986. than here.

  987. Himself giving us Himself.

  988. So you must prayerfully

  989. read the text

  990. in its context.

  991. And beloved,

  992. you don't have to be

  993. brilliant to do this.

  994. You don't have to

  995. be a scholar

  996. to be able to do

  997. this type of thing.

  998. All of us are theologians.

  999. All of us can spend time

  1000. in the Scriptures

  1001. prayerfully asking

1002. that God would teach us

  1003. about Himself.

  1004. that we might

  1005. understand it better.

  1006. So firstly,

  1007. prayerfully read the text

  1008. in its context.

  1009. Second,

  1010. surround yourself

  1011. with biblical teaching.

  1012. Surround yourself

  1013. with biblical teaching

  1014. with people

  1015. and other ways

  1016. that you can

  1017. take in

1018. the truth of the Bible.

  1019. We have

  1020. the most amazing,

  1021. almost limitless resources

  1022. at our fingertips

1023. to be able to do this.

  1024. We have no excuse

  1025. for not knowing

  1026. this book

  1027. and knowing it

  1028. very well.

  1029. Be in fellowship

  1030. with a church.

  1031. For us,

  1032. show up to

  1033. our congregational meetings

  1034. like this morning.

  1035. Be involved

1036. in a community outreach group

1037. where people study the Scripture

  1038. and minister the Scripture

  1039. to one another.

  1040. Get involved

  1041. in some small group

  1042. discipleship,

  1043. meeting with people

  1044. on an individual basis

  1045. or in small crews

  1046. to talk about

  1047. the Scriptures

  1048. to be of encouragement

  1049. to one another

  1050. in that way.

  1051. I have been told

  1052. that my preaching style

1053. tends to be a bit academic.

1054. If you don't like that,

  1055. I apologize.

1056. But part of the reason

  1057. I do that

1058. is because I want you

1059. to see how I arrive at things

  1060. because I want you

1061. to be able to do it

  1062. on your own.

1063. I want you to need me.

1064. Like you have to come

  1065. and I impart something

  1066. to you every Sunday

  1067. and you just go,

  1068. oh, thank you.

  1069. That was so good.

1070. And then you try to

  1071. nourish yourself

1072. throughout the week on it.

1073. I want you to understand

1074. how it is we come

  1075. to the Scripture

  1076. and understand the Scripture

1077. so that you can go

  1078. and do it yourself.

  1079. This fellowship

  1080. is really, really important

  1081. to that end.

1082. The church is a grace

  1083. given to us

1084. to help us be founded

  1085. in the truth.

  1086. Remember that Paul

1087. is writing to a church

1088. and the way in which

  1089. they're meant to be

  1090. functioning together.

1091. You remember in verse 2

  1092. that he talked about

  1093. them being knit together

  1094. in love.

1095. That this seems to be

  1096. important and conditional

  1097. for them coming

  1098. to a full assurance

  1099. of faith.

  1100. And there are ways

1101. to access the broader church.

  1102. Don't just come

  1103. and hear my preaching.

1104. I've not written any books

  1105. so you can't read

  1106. anything I've written

  1107. but throughout history

  1108. brilliant scholars

  1109. of the Scripture

  1110. have written books

  1111. for us to enjoy

1112. that speak of the Scriptures.

  1113. And so,

  1114. kind of prioritized

  1115. in this order,

  1116. be in fellowship.

  1117. Read books

1118. that employ the Bible heavily,

  1119. that tell you

  1120. what the Bible says,

  1121. that helps you

  1122. pull it together

  1123. thematically.

  1124. Flip to the back

  1125. of a book

1126. and check the Scripture index.

1127. If it has a good

  1128. Scripture index,

  1129. it's probably,

  1130. not always,

  1131. still need to be

  1132. discerning

  1133. concerning the book,

  1134. but probably

  1135. a good book.

1136. If you want to read

  1137. good books,

  1138. there's a lot of men

1139. and women in this church

  1140. you can ask

  1141. about good books.

  1142. Read biography.

  1143. Access the lives

  1144. of saints

  1145. that have gone before.

  1146. See these examples

  1147. of faithfulness,

  1148. the breadth

  1149. of somebody's life

  1150. and the way

  1151. in which God

  1152. has worked

  1153. and moved through them.

  1154. It's always so nice

  1155. in the midst

  1156. of your trouble

  1157. and the way

  1158. the truth applies

  1159. to you

1160. to step back up high

  1161. and look down

  1162. at somebody's life

  1163. and see the way

  1164. in which God

  1165. has been providential

  1166. through it all.

  1167. Read.

  1168. Take up and read

  1169. good books.

  1170. Listen to sermons

  1171. beyond mine.

1172. Man, we have a great

  1173. wealth of sermons.

  1174. You have so much

  1175. little bits of downtime

  1176. in your day.

  1177. Driving in the car,

1178. waiting in the doctor's office.

  1179. John Piper,

  1180. it's a wonderful resource,

  1181. DesiringGod.org.

  1182. Decades of his preaching

  1183. recorded on there.

  1184. Amazing project

  1185. that they made available.

  1186. John MacArthur,

  1187. GraceToYou,

  1188. GTY.org.

  1189. Also another wonderful one.

  1190. Arturo Azzerdia,

  1191. SpiritEmpoweredPreaching.com.

  1192. He's my favorite,

  1193. so if you have

  1194. limited time,

  1195. go check out

  1196. Pastor Art.

  1197. And more recently,

  1198. Martin Lloyd-Jones,

  1199. The Doctor,

  1200. MLJTrust.org

  1201. is a wonderful,

  1202. wonderful resource.

  1203. Listen to podcasts.

1204. Three that I listen to daily.

1205. Five Minutes in Church History

  1206. by Stephen Nichols.

  1207. Ask Pastor John

  1208. by John Piper.

1209. And The Briefing by Al Mohler.

1210. These things will help you

1211. to have a resolute understanding

  1212. of who Christ is.

1213. This should be our activity,

  1214. beloved.

  1215. You are a theologian

  1216. if you're a Christian.

1217. You must understand God rightly.

1218. It matters for your life.

  1219. So, disciples must have

  1220. a resolute understanding.

  1221. Secondly, disciples of Jesus

  1222. must walk in Him.

  1223. Must walk in Him.

  1224. Verses 5, 6 and 7,

1225. I guess the first part of 7.

1226. For though I am absent in the body,

1227. yet I am with you in spirit,

1228. rejoicing to see your good order

1229. and the firmness of your faith in Christ.

1230. Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord,

  1231. so walk in Him.

1232. Rooted and built up in Him

1233. and established in the faith

1234. just as you were taught.

  1235. Now, remember that Paul

1236. has never seen these believers.

1237. He's never been to this church.

1238. And as far as we know,

1239. he never did go there.

  1240. And he says,

1241. as I'm absent in the body,

1242. I'm with you in spirit.

1243. Just to say that I'm longing

1244. to be there with you.

1245. I'd like to be there with you.

  1246. I'm considering you.

  1247. I'm praying for you.

1248. I'm writing to you now.

  1249. And he's rejoicing.

  1250. He's heard reports

1251. from Epaphras of their good order.

  1252. The way in which

1253. the Gospel is having effect in their life

1254. and that they are in fact

1255. standing against some of these heresies.

  1256. There's a challenge to it.

  1257. There's a tearing at the seams.

  1258. But yet, there's a firmness

1259. of their faith in Christ.

1260. And so Paul commends them

  1261. for their conduct.

1262. Good order and the firmness

  1263. of their faith.

  1264. Proper learning,

  1265. a resolute understanding

  1266. yields proper living.

  1267. It's the necessary outcome

  1268. of understanding

1269. that we get it to the degree

1270. that we act on it.

1271. That it's not just some thing

  1272. in modern terms

  1273. we call it philosophy,

  1274. but that it's a reality.

  1275. It's a thing that

  1276. who Jesus is

  1277. causes us to turn

  1278. and to move

  1279. and to work

  1280. and to act.

1281. A good example of this

  1282. is Romans 12.

  1283. Verse 2

  1284. where Paul writes,

  1285. Do not be conformed

  1286. to this world,

  1287. but be transformed

  1288. by the renewal

  1289. of your mind,

  1290. that by testing

  1291. you may discern

1292. what is the will of God,

  1293. what is good

  1294. and acceptable

  1295. and perfect.

1296. So don't be like the world.

  1297. Be different.

  1298. Be changed

1299. from one degree to another

1300. by the changing of your mind.

  1301. Resolute understanding.

  1302. Getting who God is

  1303. and how He functions

  1304. with you

1305. now that you're His child.

  1306. That by testing

  1307. you may discern.

  1308. And the word discern

  1309. here in the ESV

1310. is kind of a word

  1311. too weak,

  1312. I think.

  1313. It means,

  1314. some of your translations

  1315. may say,

  1316. approve

1317. what is the will of God.

  1318. Still,

  1319. maybe not quite there.

1320. The word carries with it

  1321. the meaning of

  1322. valuing.

  1323. Doing something

  1324. because you have

  1325. assessed it

  1326. and that you agree

1327. that it is the proper

  1328. thing to do.

  1329. That you have looked

  1330. at something

  1331. and you've said,

  1332. yes,

  1333. because my mind

  1334. is being transformed,

  1335. I'm looking at this

  1336. thing in the world

  1337. and I'm seeing that

  1338. it is good

  1339. and right

  1340. and true.

  1341. It's a thing

  1342. that God treasures,

  1343. therefore I will

  1344. treasure it.

  1345. It's good

  1346. and it's acceptable

  1347. and it's perfect.

1348. And this is the way

  1349. in which we're meant

  1350. to walk

  1351. in truth

  1352. under God.

  1353. Ephesians 4.18

  1354. It's an interesting

  1355. connection here

  1356. that Paul makes.

  1357. I think I just realized

  1358. that every single

  1359. reference today

  1360. was written by Paul.

  1361. Ephesians 4.18

  1362. Paul says,

  1363. speaking of

  1364. those who are not

  1365. in the faith,

  1366. unbelievers,

  1367. I hope categorically

  1368. different than who you

  1369. are this morning,

  1370. it says,

  1371. they are

  1372. darkened in their

  1373. understanding,

  1374. alienated from the

  1375. life of God

  1376. because of the

  1377. ignorance

  1378. that is in them

  1379. due

  1380. to their

  1381. hardness

  1382. of heart.

  1383. So it's an interesting

  1384. kind of phrasing

  1385. that he connects

  1386. on the end here.

  1387. Rather than just saying

  1388. they are darkened

  1389. in their understanding,

  1390. they don't understand

  1391. who God is

  1392. and how they're

1393. meant to relate to Him

  1394. and therefore

  1395. they're alienated

1396. from the life of God

  1397. because of this

  1398. ignorance

  1399. that is in them,

1400. he takes it a step

  1401. further to say

  1402. it's due

  1403. to their

  1404. hardness

  1405. of heart.

  1406. And I just want

  1407. to press to you

  1408. and say to you

  1409. again

  1410. that man is

  1411. dichotomous,

  1412. that our head

  1413. and our heart

  1414. are never divorced,

  1415. that the two

  1416. function together,

  1417. that these

  1418. people have

  1419. a hardness

  1420. of heart,

  1421. their emotions,

  1422. their desire

  1423. for the things

  1424. of God

  1425. are turned

  1426. away from God

  1427. and therefore

  1428. they're darkened

  1429. in understanding.

  1430. And for those

  1431. of us who have

  1432. been delivered

  1433. from that,

  1434. our affections

  1435. are turned

  1436. toward God

  1437. and therefore

  1438. our mind

  1439. should also be

  1440. as well.

  1441. We should desire

  1442. to know Him

  1443. more.

  1444. These two things

  1445. should be functioning

  1446. together,

  1447. kind of conduiting

  1448. one from the

  1449. other.

  1450. So it's important

  1451. that we see

  1452. this,

  1453. that we see

  1454. that there should

  1455. be an outflow,

  1456. an outcome

  1457. of the way

  1458. in which we

  1459. think.

  1460. That there

  1461. shouldn't be

  1462. head without

  1463. heart or

  1464. heart without

  1465. head.

  1466. And so in

  1467. verse 6

  1468. He says to

  1469. them,

  1470. as you received

  1471. Christ Jesus

  1472. the Lord,

  1473. so walk

  1474. in Him.

  1475. And there is

  1476. so very much

  1477. to be said

  1478. about walking

  1479. in Christ.

  1480. This little

  1481. tiny phrase,

  1482. so walk

  1483. in Him.

  1484. We could

  1485. expound on

  1486. the entire

  1487. Christian experience

  1488. of what it

  1489. would mean

  1490. to walk

  1491. in Christ.

  1492. And I'm

  1493. not going

  1494. to go

  1495. there today.

  1496. We don't

  1497. have time

  1498. for it,

  1499. or you

  1500. guys have

  1501. the bandwidth

  1502. for it,

  1503. or myself,

  1504. but lest

  1505. you think

  1506. I'm neglecting

  1507. this,

  1508. the breadth

  1509. of that

  1510. phrase,

  1511. let me

  1512. assure you

  1513. that there's

  1514. much opportunity

  1515. to divulge

  1516. more concerning

  1517. this in the

  1518. rest of

  1519. chapter 2

  1520. and chapter 3.

  1521. In fact,

  1522. that's what

  1523. Paul intends

  1524. to go

  1525. on to do.

  1526. In the coming

  1527. weeks,

  1528. we'll look

  1529. more at

  1530. what it

  1531. looks like

  1532. to walk

  1533. in Christ.

  1534. But here

  1535. it is,

  1536. and we

  1537. can't

  1538. possibly

  1539. overlook

  1540. it here

  1541. in its

  1542. immediate

  1543. context.

  1544. We have

  1545. to deal

  1546. with it.

  1547. He says,

  1548. therefore,

  1549. therefore,

  1550. because you

  1551. have received

  1552. Christ and

  1553. have settled

  1554. convictions about

  1555. His deity and

  1556. sufficiency,

  1557. this is working

  1558. in your lives

  1559. for good

  1560. order.

  1561. You've come

  1562. to this

  1563. resolute

  1564. understanding

  1565. and now

  1566. it's out

  1567. working.

  1568. He's saying

  1569. don't stop.

  1570. Just as you

  1571. received Christ,

  1572. walk in Him.

  1573. Don't stop

  1574. doing the

  1575. thing that

  1576. you're doing.

  1577. I've heard

  1578. of your

  1579. good order.

  1580. I've heard

  1581. of your

  1582. firmness of

  1583. faith.

  1584. Don't

  1585. stop.

  1586. Walk

  1587. refers to

  1588. daily

  1589. conduct.

  1590. Continue

  1591. believing the

  1592. truth concerning

  1593. Christ.

  1594. Have an

  1595. unwavering

  1596. Christology and

  1597. have an

  1598. effect in

  1599. your life.

  1600. This is

  1601. specifically what

  1602. he's talking

  1603. about.

  1604. As he goes

  1605. on in the

  1606. letter,

  1607. he talks

  1608. about how

  1609. that should

  1610. come out

  1611. of you

  1612. more

  1613. practically.

  1614. But in the

  1615. beginning of

  1616. verse 7,

  1617. there are

  1618. three

  1619. participles

  1620. that elaborate

  1621. on so walk

  1622. in Him.

  1623. This idea

  1624. rooted and

  1625. built up in

  1626. Him and

  1627. established in

  1628. the faith.

  1629. Those are the

  1630. three.

  1631. First part of

  1632. verse 7,

  1633. rooted and

  1634. built up in

  1635. Him and

  1636. established in

  1637. the faith.

  1638. The phrase

  1639. here,

  1640. rooted,

  1641. you have

  1642. been firmly

  1643. planted in

  1644. Christ.

  1645. This took

  1646. place at your

  1647. salvation.

  1648. If you have

  1649. placed faith

  1650. in Him,

  1651. it's in the

  1652. perfect tense

  1653. which denotes

  1654. it is a

  1655. completed and

  1656. eternal work.

  1657. You have

  1658. power to

  1659. walk in

  1660. Him, to

  1661. be sustained

  1662. in the

  1663. truth because

  1664. you have

  1665. been rooted

  1666. in Him.

  1667. You've been

  1668. planted by

  1669. God.

  1670. And you

  1671. are being

  1672. built up

  1673. in Him.

  1674. The present

  1675. tense here

  1676. indicates that

  1677. it is a

  1678. continuous action.

  1679. It is an

  1680. ongoing thing.

  1681. That God

  1682. is at work

  1683. building us

  1684. up in

  1685. Christ.

  1686. We've been

  1687. rooted in

  1688. Christ and

  1689. we're being

  1690. built up

  1691. in Christ.

  1692. And we

  1693. have been

  1694. established

  1695. in the

  1696. face.

  1697. The passive

  1698. voice denotes

  1699. that the

  1700. establishing

  1701. happens outside

  1702. of us.

  1703. we have

  1704. been

  1705. established.

  1706. We have

  1707. not

  1708. established

  1709. ourselves,

  1710. but we

  1711. have been

  1712. established.

  1713. And that

  1714. is that

  1715. it is

  1716. God who

  1717. does the

  1718. establishing.

  1719. It should be

  1720. of a great

  1721. deal of

  1722. encouragement

  1723. to us

  1724. as disciples

  1725. of Jesus

  1726. Christ must

  1727. have a

  1728. resolute

  1729. understanding,

  1730. must walk

  1731. in Him.

  1732. And lastly,

  1733. disciples of

  1734. Jesus Christ

  1735. must abound

  1736. in

  1737. thanksgiving.

  1738. The last

  1739. part of

  1740. verse 7,

  1741. abounding

  1742. in

  1743. thanksgiving.

  1744. This is

  1745. the fourth

  1746. participle

  1747. that explains

  1748. the walking

  1749. in Him.

  1750. And it

  1751. would seem,

  1752. the way the

  1753. Greek works,

  1754. get down and

  1755. start trying to

  1756. sentence diagram

  1757. this all out,

  1758. that it's a

  1759. response to

  1760. the other

  1761. three

  1762. aforementioned

  1763. participles.

  1764. Rooted and

  1765. built up in

  1766. Him and

  1767. established in

  1768. the faith

  1769. because of

  1770. these things

  1771. abounding

  1772. in

  1773. thanksgiving.

  1774. It kind of

  1775. seems on

  1776. first reading

  1777. to almost be

  1778. like an

  1779. afterthought.

  1780. Like Paul's

  1781. like, oh

  1782. yeah, yeah,

  1783. oh and be

  1784. thankful.

  1785. It's good,

  1786. important to

  1787. be thankful.

  1788. But it really

  1789. deserves a

  1790. closer look

  1791. because there's

  1792. a giving

  1793. thanks theme,

  1794. a theme of

  1795. thanksgiving

  1796. that develops

  1797. in the book

  1798. of Colossians.

  1799. Look quickly,

  1800. chapter 1,

  1801. verse 12.

  1802. You'll see it

  1803. there.

  1804. Here in

  1805. chapter 2,

  1806. verse 7.

  1807. And again,

  1808. in chapter 4,

  1809. verse 2.

  1810. I'll talk about

  1811. each of those

  1812. briefly.

  1813. But why is it

  1814. that Paul

  1815. finds thanksgiving

  1816. to be so

  1817. incredibly

  1818. important?

  1819. It seems to

  1820. be, what he

  1821. seems to be

  1822. presenting it

  1823. as, is a

  1824. weapon against

  1825. the very false

  1826. teaching that

  1827. he's addressing.

  1828. Thanksgiving

  1829. is a weapon,

  1830. an offensive

  1831. against

  1832. false teaching.

  1833. So how could

  1834. that be true?

  1835. Chapter 1,

  1836. verse 12.

  1837. Giving thanks is

  1838. the proper

  1839. response of

  1840. what has

  1841. proceeded in

  1842. chapter 9,

  1843. verse 11,

  1844. and what

  1845. follows in

  1846. verses 12-14.

  1847. Right?

  1848. The goodness

  1849. of God

  1850. to us,

  1851. the brevity

  1852. of it,

  1853. the breadth

  1854. of it,

  1855. in Christ.

  1856. How is it

  1857. God has

  1858. saved us

  1859. by the

  1860. work of

  1861. Christ?

  1862. And giving

  1863. thanks is

  1864. given as

  1865. this proper

  1866. and right

  1867. response to

  1868. that.

  1869. Again,

  1870. here in

  1871. 2-7,

  1872. abounding in

  1873. thanksgiving

  1874. is the

  1875. proper response

  1876. of the

  1877. things that

  1878. have been

  1879. said previously,

  1880. rooted and

  1881. built up in

  1882. Him,

  1883. established in

  1884. the faith,

  1885. just as you

  1886. were taught.

  1887. Taught what?

  1888. The things

  1889. that we've

  1890. seen to be

  1891. true in

  1892. chapter 2,

  1893. 2 and 3,

  1894. which I read

  1895. to you

  1896. previously.

  1897. Hearts

  1898. encouraged,

  1899. together in love,

  1900. to reach the

  1901. riches of

  1902. full assurance,

  1903. of understanding,

  1904. and the

  1905. knowledge of

  1906. God's mystery,

  1907. which is

  1908. Christ,

  1909. in whom are

  1910. hidden all the

  1911. treasures of

  1912. wisdom and

  1913. of knowledge.

  1914. So it's a

  1915. proper response

  1916. giving thanks

  1917. to who

  1918. Christ is

  1919. and who

  1920. He is

  1921. to us.

  1922. Being

  1923. thankful,

  1924. beloved,

  1925. is the

  1926. outworking

  1927. of,

  1928. the

  1929. grasping

  1930. of the

  1931. reality of

  1932. what Christ

  1933. has done

  1934. on our

  1935. behalf.

  1936. It gives

  1937. it wheels.

  1938. When our

  1939. hearts overflow

  1940. with

  1941. thankfulness,

  1942. it takes

  1943. it from

  1944. being high

  1945. and philosophical

  1946. to being

  1947. real to us

  1948. when we

  1949. respond to

  1950. it with

  1951. thanksgiving.

  1952. Being

  1953. thankful has

  1954. perspective

  1955. shifting

  1956. power.

  1957. Let me

  1958. give you

  1959. a very

  1960. obtuse

  1961. example of

  1962. this,

  1963. then I'll

  1964. give you

  1965. a spiritual

  1966. application

  1967. as well.

  1968. Yesterday,

  1969. I mowed

  1970. the grass

  1971. at our

  1972. house.

  1973. I really

  1974. hate

  1975. mowing

  1976. grass.

  1977. I would

  1978. love

  1979. someday

  1980. to pay

  1981. somebody

  1982. to mow

  1983. my grass

  1984. all the

  1985. time.

  1986. It was

  1987. hot out

  1988. yesterday.

  1989. I have

  1990. allergies,

  1991. so as soon

  1992. as I start

  1993. kicking up

  1994. the dust

  1995. and the

  1996. other weeds

  1997. and things

  1998. that are in

  1999. our yard,

  2000. I sneeze

  2001. a lot.

  2002. But I'm

  2003. out there

  2004. and I'm

  2005. cutting the

  2006. grass and

  2007. my mind's

  2008. beginning to

  2009. take this

  2010. grass and

  2011. kind of

  2012. an attitude

  2013. about it.

  2014. And I

  2015. was thinking

  2016. about this

  2017. text and

  2018. I was

  2019. thinking about

  2020. how it

  2021. is that

  2022. being

  2023. thankful

  2024. combats

  2025. lives.

  2026. So here

  2027. I am

  2028. beginning to

  2029. pick up

  2030. all of

  2031. these things

  2032. like it's

  2033. hot,

  2034. starting to

  2035. get damp

  2036. up here.

  2037. I couldn't

  2038. get my

  2039. earbud to

  2040. stay in my

  2041. ear.

  2042. Every time I

  2043. turned my

  2044. head,

  2045. it would

  2046. pop out

  2047. of my

  2048. ear and

  2049. I'd

  2050. have to

  2051. put the

  2052. music back

  2053. in my

  2054. ear.

  2055. It was

  2056. annoying,

  2057. I was

  2058. sneezing

  2059. a lot.

  2060. I'm

  2061. thinking about

  2062. being

  2063. thankful and

  2064. the power

  2065. of being

  2066. thankful and

  2067. all of a

  2068. sudden this

  2069. breeze just

  2070. blew through

  2071. our backyard

  2072. and it was

  2073. so nice and

  2074. cool,

  2075. it felt so

  2076. good and

  2077. I went,

  2078. it's actually

  2079. not that

  2080. hot out

  2081. here.

  2082. The cloud

  2083. covers out

  2084. and yesterday

  2085. got hot but

  2086. when I was

  2087. cutting the

  2088. grass it was

  2089. cloudy at

  2090. our house and

  2091. there was this

  2092. nice breeze.

  2093. I realized that

  2094. I just hadn't

  2095. noticed the

  2096. breeze before but

  2097. the breeze had

  2098. been blowing

  2099. the entire

  2100. time I

  2101. was out

  2102. there.

  2103. I began to

  2104. think about

  2105. how I'm

  2106. thankful that

  2107. I have a

  2108. yard.

  2109. We just

  2110. recently did

  2111. a bunch of

  2112. work on the

  2113. yard and

  2114. it went

  2115. well and

  2116. there's some

  2117. good and

  2118. some value

  2119. in having a

  2120. space to

  2121. enjoy in

  2122. that way and

  2123. suddenly my

  2124. mind shifted

  2125. doing the

  2126. exact same

  2127. activity and

  2128. my mind

  2129. shifted from

  2130. being grumbly

  2131. about it to

  2132. being happy,

  2133. happy that I

  2134. was cutting the

  2135. grass.

  2136. I have grass

  2137. to cut and

  2138. it's a nice

  2139. cool day and

  2140. God has been

  2141. good and

  2142. blessed me

  2143. with this

  2144. house.

  2145. So there's

  2146. this ability

  2147. to shift.

  2148. If you leave

  2149. here and I

  2150. hope that you

  2151. do and you

  2152. go with

  2153. people and

  2154. go have

  2155. food together,

  2156. some form of

  2157. fellowship,

  2158. I'd encourage you

  2159. to talk about

  2160. sermons.

  2161. If the first

  2162. thing you talk

  2163. about is how

  2164. long the

  2165. sermon was

  2166. today,

  2167. you're likely

  2168. not going to

  2169. say a whole

  2170. lot positive

  2171. about the

  2172. sermon beyond

  2173. that.

  2174. You say,

  2175. man,

  2176. Nathan preached

  2177. all the way

  2178. to noon,

  2179. which now I

  2180. have to,

  2181. to just make

  2182. the example

  2183. work well

  2184. for you.

  2185. What a long

  2186. sermon that

  2187. was.

  2188. Rather than

  2189. somebody breaks

  2190. the ice and

  2191. says,

  2192. isn't it good

  2193. that we have

  2194. the truth of

  2195. God,

  2196. that we can

  2197. sit it in our

  2198. laps and we

  2199. can listen to

  2200. it preached?

  2201. Whether I do a

  2202. good job or not,

  2203. I'm always very

  2204. hard on myself,

  2205. that someone this

  2206. week took the

  2207. time to try to

  2208. divulge to you

  2209. the truth contained

  2210. in the Scriptures.

  2211. You begin a

  2212. conversation like

  2213. that and it

  2214. changes.

  2215. The perspective

  2216. changes.

  2217. Yes,

  2218. God is good

  2219. to us.

  2220. Right?

  2221. It causes

  2222. cynicism,

  2223. which I am so

  2224. guilty of,

  2225. to flee.

  2226. It turns our

  2227. hearts.

  2228. It's the

  2229. outcome of

  2230. recognition of

  2231. how very good

  2232. God is to us.

  2233. And Paul places

  2234. it so strategically

  2235. in here as the

  2236. way in which we

  2237. turn our minds

  2238. from the lies

  2239. that the world

  2240. is telling us

  2241. to the truth

  2242. of God.

  2243. And just to

  2244. drive that home

  2245. for you,

  2246. chapter 4,

  2247. verse 2,

  2248. and this is it.

  2249. We're going to

  2250. wrap up here in

  2251. just a moment.

  2252. Chapter 4,

  2253. verse 2.

  2254. He says,

  2255. continue steadfastly

  2256. in prayer,

  2257. so persevere in

  2258. your prayer,

  2259. being watchful in

  2260. it with

  2261. thanksgiving.

  2262. Not and be

  2263. thankful or be

  2264. thankful in your

  2265. praying,

  2266. but be watchful in

  2267. it,

  2268. and the way

  2269. you're being

  2270. watchful is

  2271. with thanksgiving.

  2272. And why is that?

  2273. Because the

  2274. enemy does not

  2275. want us praying.

  2276. God's people

  2277. praying are a

  2278. dangerous thing

  2279. because God

  2280. uses the prayers

  2281. of his people

  2282. to accomplish

  2283. his will.

  2284. He doesn't

  2285. need us,

  2286. but he uses us

  2287. in that regard.

  2288. We're dangerous

  2289. when we get on

  2290. our knees.

  2291. John Piper said

  2292. it this way,

  2293. which I just love,

  2294. really appreciate.

  2295. He said,

  2296. when we pray,

  2297. we kneel in a

  2298. hornet's nest

  2299. of evil.

  2300. That,

  2301. that evil

  2302. pours out.

  2303. Have you,

  2304. have you not

  2305. experienced this

  2306. in your prayers?

  2307. You're so easily

  2308. distracted.

  2309. You buy lies

  2310. so readily.

  2311. The greatest lie

  2312. that I believe

  2313. is that God

  2314. doesn't hear my

  2315. prayers.

  2316. That my prayers

  2317. aren't worthy

  2318. to go up to

  2319. him.

  2320. And this is

  2321. something that's

  2322. told to me

  2323. by the enemy.

  2324. When the truth

  2325. of it is,

  2326. that I'm clothed

  2327. in Christ's

  2328. righteousness,

  2329. by myself,

  2330. they're certainly

  2331. not,

  2332. but because I'm

  2333. clothed in Christ's

  2334. righteousness,

  2335. when God sees

  2336. me,

  2337. he sees Christ.

  2338. And that Christ

  2339. is sitting at

  2340. his right hand

  2341. and he leans

  2342. over when I

  2343. pray and he

  2344. goes,

  2345. you should hear

  2346. this,

  2347. I've got him.

  2348. That my life

  2349. has been redeemed

  2350. and therefore

  2351. my prayers

  2352. are heard.

  2353. So,

  2354. thankfulness is

  2355. the way in

  2356. which we are

  2357. watchful.

  2358. That we can

  2359. rejoice in the

  2360. truth of the

  2361. gospel and

  2362. rightly pray

  2363. and not be

  2364. attacked by

  2365. these outside

  2366. influences

  2367. because it's

  2368. the outcome,

  2369. it's the

  2370. outflow of

  2371. our recognition

  2372. of God's

  2373. goodness to

  2374. us in

  2375. Christ.

  2376. I hope you're

  2377. seeing that

  2378. connection.

  2379. I'm not sure

  2380. my mind is

  2381. totally wrapped

  2382. it up yet,

  2383. but I'm

  2384. going to end

  2385. there because

  2386. it is now

  2387. noon.

  2388. And now my

  2389. example doesn't

  2390. work if I go

  2391. much further.

  2392. So let me

  2393. just conclude

  2394. this,

  2395. beloved.

  2396. If we're

  2397. going to

  2398. contend for

  2399. the truth,

  2400. if we're

  2401. going to

  2402. stand firm

  2403. in the

  2404. faith,

  2405. in the

  2406. midst of

  2407. a day

  2408. when the

  2409. truth is

  2410. being torn

  2411. asunder,

  2412. when the

  2413. truth is

  2414. being distorted,

  2415. the enemy

  2416. is certainly

  2417. at work

  2418. trying to

  2419. lead us

  2420. astray,

  2421. trying to

  2422. take us

  2423. captive,

  2424. we must

  2425. have a

  2426. resolute

  2427. understanding.

  2428. We must

  2429. walk in

  2430. Him,

  2431. Christ,

  2432. and we

  2433. must abound

  2434. in

  2435. thanksgiving.

  2436. Let's pray

  2437. together.
