  1. If you weren't here last week, just really quickly, I want to get you caught up.

  2. I know there's a lot of people who weren't here.

  3. These verses that we covered last week and the verses that we covered this week will really be taken as a whole.

  4. And so we kind of have to do some piecing together, some combining of this week and last week.

  5. And I gave you an outline last week so that we can kind of see the overall picture of this text.

  6. And this is basically it, that we have a warning not to be taken by empty deceit, not to be taken by worldly, empty philosophy.

  7. And then we have a call to the sufficiency or the supremacy of Christ over worldly philosophy.

  8. And then the outflow of that is kind of something that's going on in the background all throughout the book of Colossians that Paul is doing.

  9. And that is this thing called apologetics.

  10. It kind of naturally outflows from this idea that we shouldn't be taken by empty philosophy,

  11. that the supremacy of Christ reigns in our hearts, and the outflow of that is apologetics.

  12. And we see this in Paul's letters as well as his preaching and his teaching.

  13. And so last week we defined apologetics in this basic form as knowing what we believe,

  14. why we believe it, and then being able to communicate that effectively to others.

  15. The last part is pretty important, right?

  16. So knowing what we believe, why we believe it, and then being able to communicate that effectively to others.

  17. And this is really what we see Paul doing throughout the book of Colossians.

  18. And the core of his message is in Colossians 2, verses 8 to the end of the chapter, including our text this morning.

    Colossians 2:8

  19. And so we're going to see the core of his message here is really combating heresy.

  20. It's really combating these unbiblical ideas that are making their way,

  21. these empty philosophies that are making their way into the church at Colossae.

  22. And there really isn't a better time to be talking about this than right now.

  23. Nathan's already mentioned it before, but the travesty that took place this week with the Supreme Court ruling,

  24. I use the word travesty, not tragedy.

  25. It's not a tragedy for us as believers.

  26. It's important that we understand this is very much a part of apologetics,

  27. how we react to cultural issues such as what happened this week.

  28. And should we care about the same-sex marriage ruling?

  29. Yes, we should.

  30. We should care about it.

  31. We should be concerned about it.

  32. Should we be concerned about the direction our culture is heading in terms of how it glorifies sin over Christ?

  33. Yes, absolutely.

  34. We should be concerned about these things.

  35. But should we respond in panic and outlash?

  36. Absolutely not.

  37. There's nothing to panic about.

  38. There's nothing that has changed in terms of the biblical definition of marriage.

  39. But they're redefining marriage, right?

  40. No, they're redefining the law.

  41. They have redefined the law.

  42. Let's be clear here.

  43. Whose idea was marriage in the beginning?

  44. It was God's idea.

  45. In Genesis chapter 2, God said that it is not good for the man to be alone.

    Genesis 2 chapter mention

  46. And so he created for Adam a suitable helper.

  47. And right then, in the very beginning, God defines marriage.

  48. Genesis 2, 24.

  49. It's his idea.

  50. It's his definition.

  51. We can't change that as humans.

  52. The Supreme Court can't change that.

  53. Our President of the United States isn't powerful enough to change the definition of marriage.

  54. So God defines it as simply as a covenant union.

  55. A lifelong covenant union between one man and one woman.

  56. That's what marriage is.

  57. God gets to decide what marriage looks like.

  58. It's his idea.

  59. It's his definition.

  60. The Supreme Court has the power to do a lot of things, but they can't redefine biblical marriage.

  61. Genesis chapter 2 defines biblical marriage.

    Genesis 2 chapter mention

  62. The Supreme Court might be able to change the law.

  63. This is important.

  64. Don't miss this.

  65. They might be able to change the law, but they can't put Christ back in the grave.

  66. It means, fellow believers, that we should respond as people who have hope, and we should be living out our faith as people who have hope.

  67. It means we don't panic when the Supreme Court tells us something like they did this week.

  68. We live as people who have hope.

  69. It goes all back to what we talked about last week, that Jesus is the ultimate authority over all authorities, over all rulers.

  70. We read that last week in our text.

  71. He is supreme over all authority.

  72. And yes, that means he is supreme over the Supreme Court of the United States.

  73. They might be the highest court authority, but they are not the highest overall authority.

  74. Jesus is.

  75. Let's not forget that.

  76. And let's not forget that every person outside of God's grace is looking for hope.

  77. They're looking for something to hope in, to place their hope.

  78. And there's a lot of celebration right now in the homosexual camp because they think that they have found hope.

  79. They think that's what they've found.

  80. So don't alienate yourself from these people by pushing them away from the gospel.

  81. Remember what we said last week.

  82. Apologetics is not the vindication of me.

  83. It's the vindication of the Christian philosophy of life.

  84. And so we're not out to win arguments.

  85. We're not out there to defend ourselves.

  86. We're out to defend biblical truth.

  87. So don't push these people away from the gospel.

  88. Because when they finally realize that there's no hope in their lifestyle, it's going to be us standing there with open arms, ready to welcome them in to the fold of Christ.

  89. It's going to be us as they begin to place their hope in the only one true and holy God, the only one true hope that we have.

  90. And we've got to be ready to give a defense for the reason, for the hope that we have, which is Christ Jesus.

  91. I left you last week with something to think about.

  92. And I don't know how many of you have actually thought about it.

  93. Hopefully most of you.

  94. But this is what I said.

  95. There's essentially 66 books of the Bible.

  96. We're not adding any more to that.

  97. The canon is closed.

  98. Which means that there's a limited number of things that we believe, right?

  99. If there's only 66 books of the Bible, it can only contain a certain amount of truth in it.

  100. And that is what we hold to believe.

  101. There's a limited number of things that we believe.

  102. And if that is true, if we have a limited number of things that we believe, that means there's a limited number of objections that people can raise up against our beliefs.

  103. And also a limited number of objections that we must answer.

  104. And thirdly, we have those answers.

  105. God's given them to us in Scripture.

  106. And so my point in telling you that is that you have the ability, as a believer in Jesus Christ, you have the ability to do this thing that we call apologetics.

  107. You can contend for the faith.

  108. It is possible for you to do this.

  109. This isn't just something for elite Christians.

  110. This isn't just something for the seminary professors and then the big mega church pastors or whatever it happens to be.

  111. This is something that you and I can and should do according to Scripture.

  112. Contend for the faith.

  113. It may take some practice.

  114. It may take some boldness.

  115. It might take some courage.

  116. But you can do it.

  117. And so the first thing that we really need to know, practically speaking, when we're contending for the faith,

  118. is that I'm not responsible for defending what I do not believe.

  119. So we're narrowing it down here.

  120. We're even making it more simple, right?

  121. We don't have to defend what we don't believe.

  122. I'm also not responsible for defending heresy.

  123. If someone asks me about heresy, well, yeah, well, what about this?

  124. Well, that's heresy.

  125. I don't believe it.

  126. I'm not going to defend something that I don't believe.

  127. I don't need to defend heresy.

  128. I just need to know what I believe.

  129. Well, it would be kind of like somebody walking up to you and just maybe saying,

  130. well, what about the way the Russians handle their foreign policy?

  131. I don't know.

  132. Well, I'm kind of not a Russian, you know?

  133. I don't know why the Russians do what they do.

  134. Just ask one of them, I guess.

  135. I mean, I'm not a Russian.

  136. I'm also not responsible for defending assumptions in straw men.

  137. You know what a straw man is?

  138. A straw man is an argument that somebody is making or an argument that somebody is refuting that you didn't even make to begin with.

  139. It's a really effective fallacy.

  140. It's an informal fallacy that people often will make in front of other people.

  141. If you have a group and you're doing a debate in front of people, they'll begin to attack an argument you're not even making.

  142. And so it looks effective, but really it's a fallacy.

  143. You've got to call those out.

  144. It's a straw man.

  145. Well, you guys believe, and you can just fill in the blank with whatever, whatever we're being accused of, whatever horrible thing we're being accused of this week.

  146. Well, you guys just believe this.

  147. I don't believe that.

  148. Do you believe that?

  149. I don't know anybody who believes that.

  150. In fact, I think you're making that up.

  151. Paul doesn't entertain assumptions or straw men in his writing or in his preaching.

  152. There's a great example of it.

  153. You can go look it up later.

  154. I don't have time to go there.

  155. But Acts chapter 17, there's a lot of questions being raised to Paul.

    Acts 17 chapter mention

  156. Does he entertain these straw men?

  157. No.

  158. He doesn't entertain them.

  159. He just calls it what it is, and he moves on.

  160. We don't have to defend straw men or anything that we don't believe.

  161. So what do we do?

  162. We use the Word of God as your source of objections.

  163. Why?

  164. Because it is your source for what you believe.

  165. It is your source for what you believe.

  166. If you can't defend what you believe from the Word of God, then it means it probably isn't in the Word of God,

  167. and therefore we probably shouldn't believe it.

  168. So we use Scripture.

  169. It's important.

  170. The first thing that we need to know about these things is that it must be biblical.

  171. Our apologetics must be biblical.

  172. Now at this point, some people will say,

  173. Well, Kyle, that's great if I'm talking to someone who believes the Bible,

  174. but what if I'm talking to someone who doesn't believe in the Bible?

  175. Then I've got to use something outside of the Bible to prove what I believe,

  176. because they don't believe in the Bible.

  177. Says who?

  178. Says who?

  179. They don't believe in the Bible, so I don't use my Bible?

  180. That sounds like their rule.

  181. Why would I do that?

  182. You know what it sounds like to me?

  183. It sounds like if I'm a knight in medieval times,

  184. and I walk up to my opponent, and I say,

  185. Unsheath my sword.

  186. And my opponent looks at me and says,

  187. I don't believe in your sword.

  188. Well, then allow me to speak about the science of the metallurgy,

  189. so that you may as well believe in my sword.

  190. No.

  191. He's either going to believe in my sword,

  192. or he's just going to lose.

  193. Right?

  194. In fact, when we are arguing biblical truth with someone who does not believe the Bible,

  195. if we give up the Bible, then they've just won.

  196. Because we've agreed with them that there's a greater source than the Bible,

  197. and that we don't need the Bible for truth.

  198. The last thing you want to do is give up your Bible.

  199. Why on earth would I allow someone else to dictate how the Word of God is communicated?

  200. It makes no sense at all.

  201. It's alive and active, and sharper than any two-edged sword.

  202. So when I choose to use something outside of the Bible,

  203. it means that I choose to use something that's not as authoritative,

  204. and not as powerful as Scripture.

  205. Therefore, I do not relinquish it.

  206. Do not relinquish your sword.

  207. The Bible compares it, actually, to a sword many times throughout Scripture.

  208. So this is how this works.

  209. We're going to try to simplify this so that we can understand this a little better,

  210. and I promise we're going to get into the text.

  211. This is all kind of work leading up to us seeing how Paul is working this out inside this text.

  212. So this is how this works.

  213. So first of all, it's got to be biblical,

  214. and second of all, it has to be simple,

  215. or else we're not going to do it, right?

  216. If we don't make this simple for ourselves,

  217. then we're not going to practice this in our own lives.

  218. And so if you know seven or eight key characteristics of theology,

  219. and you know a couple of key passages,

  220. two or three key passages,

  221. where these things are discussed,

  222. no one will ever ask you a question that you can't answer.

  223. Because most of the objections that are raised against Christianity,

  224. they fall into one of these seven or eight categories.

  225. And if they do ask a question that you can't answer,

  226. more often than not, they're asking you about something you don't believe,

  227. and you don't have to defend it.

  228. So every question typically falls into these seven or eight categories.

  229. So we learn these categories,

  230. and we can begin to defend what we believe.

  231. So the tools I promised you last week,

  232. I told you that we're going to have some tools that we can use.

  233. The number one tool that we have,

  234. most of you have it in your hands right now,

  235. the Bible.

  236. Number one tool,

  237. know your scripture,

  238. know the word of God.

  239. It's the best and most reasonable thing,

  240. but it is large,

  241. it's hard to know everything that's in it.

  242. So we understand that our apologetics must be biblical,

  243. but there are other tools that are really the training grounds for apologetics.

  244. What are these tools?

  245. Catechisms,

  246. creeds,

  247. and confessions.

  248. Catechisms,

  249. creeds,

  250. and confessions.

  251. There are three C's,

  252. you can write that down in your notes,

  253. help you remember them,

  254. whatever you have to do.

  255. Catechisms,

  256. creeds,

  257. and confessions.

  258. Creeds are summaries of the gospel.

  259. They're summaries of the gospel.

  260. They are poetic in nature,

  261. so they can be easy to memorize.

  262. And there's several creeds out there.

  263. There's the Apostle Creed.

  264. And by the way,

  265. these creeds,

  266. they came out of heretical movements throughout history.

  267. Oftentimes they would call together groups of believers,

  268. and they would have what they called councils.

  269. They had the Council of Nicaea.

  270. On the other side of the Council of Nicaea,

  271. they met together to defend heresy that was going on during this time.

  272. And so on the other side of that,

  273. we get the Nicaean Creed.

  274. They come up with the Nicaean Creed.

  275. It's used to combat heresy during this time.

  276. So these are very effective things for us to look at and to understand.

  277. There's the Apostles' Creed.

  278. There's the Nicaean Creed written to combat Arian heresy of that day.

  279. Interestingly,

  280. Jehovah's Witness,

  281. same heresy.

  282. That's the Arian heresy.

  283. Meaning the Nicaean Creed is a great tool for us.

  284. Only a few months ago,

  285. I had a JW knock on my door.

  286. Unfortunately,

  287. we didn't really have a great conversation.

  288. They weren't really ready to have a conversation with me,

  289. and we were trying to head out the door.

  290. But they showed up at my door,

  291. and we had a short conversation.

  292. It was a little bit awkward.

  293. But this is relevant to us today.

  294. The Athanasian Creed answers the Jehovah's Witness heresy as well.

  295. How do we respond to Pentecostals?

  296. Same thing.

  297. Athanasian Creed.

  298. These creeds were written at times,

  299. not unlike in our passage today,

  300. where they were combating heresy and false doctrines.

  301. So particularly effective.

  302. Here's an interesting thing, too.

  303. Our catechisms and our confessions

  304. were designed to fit into these categories

  305. that we're talking about.

  306. And so you already have the categories laid out

  307. within your confessions.

  308. We already talked about catechisms some last week.

  309. They're questions that we ask our learners

  310. with a predefined response

  311. that the learner is supposed to say

  312. in answer to the question.

  313. So catechisms were designed

  314. to help us learn our confessions.

  315. That's how catechisms work.

  316. And so we see that we have these tools that we have.

  317. And by the way, what's a good confession of faith?

  318. We have one at Christ's Family Church.

  319. Right?

  320. Every person who is a member

  321. should have read through this

  322. before they decided to be a member.

  323. And so we already have one here at our church

  324. that outlines everything that we believe

  325. that falls into these categories.

  326. What's more is that we have Scripture

  327. that goes along with those categories.

  328. So it's a great tool for us to begin to learn.

  329. It's really the training grounds for apologetics

  330. so that we can begin to understand God's Word.

  331. We can begin to understand these categories

  332. where people might ask a question,

  333. and then we have the biblical truth

  334. that shows where we get that truth from.

  335. So particularly effective.

  336. And by the way, if you need a copy of that,

  337. I'm sure Nathan can somehow figure out a way

  338. to get you a copy of our Confession of Faith.

  339. If not, in the meantime,

  340. it is based off the New Hampshire Confession of Faith primarily.

  341. So you can go online,

  342. look up New Hampshire Confession of Faith,

  343. and you'll find essentially

  344. what is contained within Christ's Family's Confession of Faith.

  345. Am I denying that this isn't helpful to know science?

  346. No.

  347. It's not.

  348. There are helpful things,

  349. but what we have to get right first

  350. to make it simple

  351. and so that we can do it

  352. is to understand the biblical truth behind our answers.

  353. And as we do so,

  354. then we can add some other stuff to it.

  355. Simply learning about fallacies and rhetoric

  356. can go a long way

  357. in understanding what people are doing

  358. when they make their arguments.

  359. And we can call them out on certain fallacies,

  360. and they try to use tactics to trip you up.

  361. And God bless you if you take that route.

  362. That's great.

  363. If you want to continue on,

  364. you want to get deeper in your study of apologetics,

  365. you want to get deeper in the way

  366. that you can combat these heresies

  367. and these other things,

  368. these objections people are raising,

  369. then more power to you.

  370. That's really great.

  371. That's extremely beneficial.

  372. But if you want to make this simple,

  373. you're defending what you believe, right?

  374. You're defending what you believe.

  375. As far as doing apologetics,

  376. this is about you always being ready

  377. to give a reason for the hope that is within you.

  378. And you don't believe what you believe

  379. because some philosopher told you to believe it.

  380. You don't believe what you believe

  381. because some scientist told you.

  382. You believe what you believe

  383. because of what's in the text.

  384. Is there a little work that needs to be done?

  385. Yes, there is.

  386. There's some work that needs to be done up front.

  387. And unfortunately,

  388. I can't give you all the answers

  389. in a 30 to 45 minute sermon.

  390. So it's not going to work that way.

  391. You've got to do some work yourself.

  392. Come up with these ideas

  393. and understanding of Scripture.

  394. And then you can be confident

  395. and comfortable when answering these questions.

  396. Now, don't make this mistake

  397. because we make this mistake a lot as believers.

  398. Here's the reality.

  399. It's that God saves sinners.

  400. Apologetics doesn't save sinners.

  401. God saves sinners.

  402. So don't merely use apologetics

  403. without sharing the gospel.

  404. You've got to have gospel truth.

  405. The changing life message of the gospel.

  406. I was talking to a guy that works at UNG

  407. the other day.

  408. That's where I work.

  409. For those who don't know,

  410. I work in the IT department.

  411. And there was a student worker

  412. that works there.

  413. And he's a real people person.

  414. He's a really good person to talk to.

  415. He asks a lot of questions.

  416. He really wants to get to know people.

  417. And I really love that about him.

  418. And over the course of our conversation,

  419. he found out that I have a seminary background

  420. and that I used to work on staff with a church

  421. and all these things.

  422. And I almost cringe whenever I tell people this.

  423. Not because I don't want to share my faith.

  424. I love sharing my faith with people.

  425. It's because usually the walls go up

  426. and the conversation shuts down.

  427. And for those of you who have been in ministry

  428. in the past

  429. or you just happen to know these type of people,

  430. oftentimes these conversations just,

  431. they're squelched

  432. because they don't want to have a conversation

  433. with somebody who's a professional Christian,

  434. so to speak.

  435. And he really surprised me

  436. because that didn't happen with him.

  437. It so pleasantly surprised me.

  438. This guy didn't act this way toward me.

  439. He really wanted to continue engaging

  440. in this conversation.

  441. And he said,

  442. you know,

  443. I used to be an atheist

  444. and I hated the way Christians

  445. would force their faith on people.

  446. I just hated that.

  447. But now,

  448. I just say,

  449. if that's what makes people happy,

  450. then I'm,

  451. you know,

  452. more power to them.

  453. That's great.

  454. That's what makes you happy.

  455. And I said,

  456. well,

  457. I'm not really one to force my faith on anyone

  458. and I'm really not.

  459. I believe to really force your faith,

  460. you've got to try to make them believe

  461. what you believe

  462. and there's no way to do that.

  463. It's impossible.

  464. You can't make somebody believe anything.

  465. They're going to believe

  466. what they accept as truth.

  467. Right?

  468. So I'm not forcing my faith on anyone.

  469. So I said,

  470. I'm not really one to force my faith on anyone

  471. but I'll tell you this,

  472. Jesus Christ has changed my life

  473. and I'll never be the same again.

  474. And he said,

  475. that's really great.

  476. You know,

  477. that's what makes you happy.

  478. I'm happy for you.

  479. That's good.

  480. And I said,

  481. well,

  482. you know,

  483. it's way more

  484. than just making me happy.

  485. This faith that I have in Christ

  486. is way more.

  487. Scripture tells us

  488. the wages of sin is death.

  489. And I was once

  490. on a trajectory

  491. that would have sent me

  492. straight to hell.

  493. But the gift of God

  494. is new life

  495. and that comes only

  496. through the sacrifice

  497. that Jesus paid on the cross.

  498. And that just triggered something

  499. in this guy's mind

  500. and he said,

  501. yeah,

  502. well,

  503. this guy I used to work with,

  504. he told me that

  505. if I don't believe in Jesus

  506. and the people that don't believe in Jesus,

  507. well,

  508. they're going to hell.

  509. And if that's the kind of God

  510. that your God is

  511. and I don't want to have anything

  512. to do with believing in Him.

  513. I said,

  514. did your friend

  515. explain God's reason behind that?

  516. He said,

  517. well,

  518. no.

  519. Since we're already talking about it,

  520. can I explain it to you?

  521. Let's say

  522. that there is

  523. a person,

  524. a serial killer

  525. who was caught

  526. and the evidence

  527. presented before

  528. the jury

  529. was overwhelmingly

  530. guilty.

  531. He is guilty.

  532. He's killed

  533. more than 20 people

  534. and he

  535. is found guilty

  536. overwhelmingly

  537. by his jury

  538. and he stands

  539. before a judge

  540. and the judge

  541. stands up

  542. and he says,

  543. your sentence

  544. is nothing.

  545. You're free to go.

  546. Would that be just?

  547. Well,

  548. absolutely not.

  549. It wouldn't be just at all.

  550. He said,

  551. he deserves the full punishment

  552. of the law.

  553. Right.

  554. And in the same way,

  555. if you commit one sin,

  556. one sin before an eternal God,

  557. you're infinitely guilty

  558. before Him.

  559. And he says

  560. that that

  561. requires

  562. an eternal death,

  563. a sentence of eternal death.

  564. But God

  565. in His love

  566. devised a plan

  567. from the very beginning.

  568. And that plan

  569. was to send His Son

  570. as a substitute

  571. for those who die,

  572. for those who believe.

  573. Sorry.

  574. I mean,

  575. that Jesus died

  576. the death

  577. that I should have died

  578. and I said,

  579. that's why

  580. it can only be

  581. through Jesus.

  582. That's why.

  583. Because it's God's plan

  584. from the very beginning.

  585. Because it was God's plan

  586. to redeem us

  587. from the punishment

  588. that we fully deserve.

  589. And He said,

  590. man,

  591. I haven't ever heard anybody

  592. explain it to me

  593. that way before.

  594. Never heard it that way.

  595. You'll notice,

  596. by the way,

  597. that I didn't shut Him down.

  598. I wasn't trying to

  599. win an argument.

  600. I just spoke the truth

  601. to Him in love.

  602. And that is what

  603. we're called to do,

  604. believers.

  605. It's to speak

  606. the truth in love.

  607. This is what Paul does

  608. over and over and over again,

  609. by the way,

  610. in his letters.

  611. He's firm in the truth,

  612. but he speaks the truth

  613. in love.

  614. And last week,

  615. we saw that we are

  616. complete in Christ.

  617. And this is something

  618. that's going to be

  619. really important

  620. as we jump into

  621. this passage this morning.

  622. Because being complete

  623. in Christ means

  624. that we need

  625. nothing else.

  626. And what we're going

  627. to see is Paul

  628. combining a series

  629. of heresies

  630. which said that

  631. we need Jesus

  632. and something else.

  633. So as we jump into this,

  634. I want you to keep

  635. that in mind.

  636. This week,

  637. we're going to see

  638. Paul employing

  639. apologetics to combat

  640. particular heresies

  641. that the church

  642. was facing at this time.

  643. So we're going to jump

  644. right into this passage.

  645. Colossians 2,

    Colossians 2:16

  646. verse 16.

  647. Colossians 2,

  648. 16.

  649. Therefore,

  650. let no one

  651. pass judgment

  652. on you

  653. in questions

  654. of food

  655. and drink

  656. or with regard

  657. to a festival

  658. or a new moon

  659. or a Sabbath.

  660. This is standing

  661. directly opposed

  662. to the Judaizers

  663. of this day

  664. who were saying

  665. that we need

  666. to keep going,

  667. we need to keep up

  668. the Jewish ceremonial law.

  669. There was a lot

  670. of stuff they had

  671. to do.

  672. There were certain

  673. things that they

  674. could eat.

  675. There were certain

  676. things they couldn't

  677. eat.

  678. There was a lot

  679. of law that was

  680. involved in this.

  681. And what Paul is

  682. saying to the Colossians

  683. says,

  684. look,

  685. these people are

  686. trying to intimidate

  687. you with legalism.

  688. With legalism.

  689. So this is right

  690. here,

  691. this verse,

  692. he is combating

  693. the heresy

  694. of legalism.

  695. They're trying

  696. to judge you

  697. on what you eat

  698. or what you drink

  699. or whether you

  700. attend a Passover

  701. or whether you

  702. attend all

  703. these Jewish

  704. festivals,

  705. whether you

  706. make your sacrifice

  707. on New Moon

  708. or whether you

  709. prescribe to the

  710. rituals of the

  711. Sabbath day.

  712. They're trying

  713. to intimidate you

  714. by saying you

  715. need Christ

  716. plus these

  717. man-made rules.

  718. They're saying

  719. it isn't enough

  720. to know Christ.

  721. You have to know

  722. Christ and keep

  723. the Jewish

  724. ceremonial law.

  725. Legalism,

  726. by the way,

  727. is subscribing

  728. your spirituality

  729. to man-made rules.

  730. Subscribing your

  731. spirituality

  732. to man-made rules.

  733. Defining your

  734. spirituality

  735. by your ability

  736. to keep

  737. man-made rules.

  738. Obeying God's

  739. rules,

  740. by the way,

  741. what is that?

  742. That's obedience.

  743. We get this

  744. confused too often.

  745. And we accuse

  746. people of

  747. legalism

  748. when they're

  749. really just being

  750. obedient to His

  751. Word.

  752. There's a difference

  753. between obedience

  754. and legalism.

  755. Obedience,

  756. obeying God's

  757. Word,

  758. God's commands

  759. to us.

  760. Legalism,

  761. saying that we're

  762. required to follow

  763. man-made rules.

  764. There's a difference

  765. there.

  766. So don't give

  767. believers a hard

  768. time for being

  769. obedient.

  770. It's really

  771. important that we

  772. understand that

  773. distinction.

  774. Paul's not

  775. arguing against

  776. obedience here.

  777. He's arguing

  778. against legalism.

  779. Remember that

  780. Paul uses the

  781. word therefore

  782. at the beginning

  783. of this passage,

  784. which means that

  785. we must reconnect

  786. this back to the

  787. previous thought

  788. that Paul had,

  789. which we talked

  790. about last week.

  791. So in light of

  792. the completeness

  793. that we have

  794. in Christ,

  795. don't let people

  796. place legalistic

  797. judgment on you.

  798. Don't let people

  799. judge you for the

  800. things that God's

  801. Word hasn't said

  802. that we have to do.

  803. In other words,

  804. don't sacrifice

  805. your freedom in

  806. Christ to

  807. circumscribe your

  808. life to a bunch

  809. of rules,

  810. a bunch of

  811. man-made rules.

  812. Christ has

  813. canceled the

  814. bondage of

  815. law.

  816. We see this

  817. in verse 14.

  818. He canceled

  819. the record

  820. or the debt

  821. that stood

  822. against us

  823. with the

  824. legal demands.

  825. He nailed

  826. it to the

  827. cross.

  828. Galatians 5.1

  829. is really

  830. helpful for us

  831. here as well.

  832. It says,

  833. For freedom,

  834. Christ has

  835. set you free.

  836. Therefore,

  837. stand firm

  838. and do not

  839. submit again

  840. to the yoke

  841. of slavery.

  842. Don't go back

  843. to legalism.

  844. It would be

  845. ridiculous to

  846. imagine that

  847. Jesus suffered

  848. what He suffered

  849. on the cross

  850. and to free

  851. us from the

  852. prison and

  853. the bondage

  854. that we were

  855. in prior to

  856. His suffering,

  857. only for Him

  858. to send us

  859. into another

  860. jail cell.

  861. It would be

  862. ridiculous to

  863. think that.

  864. He has set

  865. us free to

  866. stay free.

  867. Now look at

  868. verse 17.

  869. These are a

  870. shadow of the

  871. things to come,

  872. but the

  873. substance,

  874. the substance

  875. belongs to

  876. Christ.

  877. These are the

  878. shadow of the

  879. things to come,

  880. but the

  881. substance

  882. belongs to

  883. Christ.

  884. I love

  885. this verse.

  886. This is an

  887. incredible verse

  888. and I think

  889. that on the

  890. surface level

  891. we don't really

  892. understand what

  893. it means,

  894. so I hope I

  895. can help you

  896. understand that

  897. here.

  898. This is really

  899. referring to the

  900. eating and

  901. drinking and

  902. the festivals

  903. mentioned in

  904. the previous

  905. passage.

  906. All these

  907. rules,

  908. all this

  909. Jewish

  910. ceremonial law,

  911. these were

  912. things that

  913. they had to

  914. do.

  915. These were

  916. things that

  917. were the

  918. shadow of

  919. the One

  920. who was to

  921. come.

  922. That's what

  923. this passage

  924. is talking

  925. about.

  926. These laws,

  927. these regulations,

  928. all these

  929. things that

  930. they had to

  931. follow,

  932. the sacrificial

  933. system,

  934. this is but

  935. a shadow of

  936. the One

  937. who is to

  938. come,

  939. and the One

  940. who is to

  941. come is

  942. here.

  943. He's arrived,

  944. and His name

  945. is Jesus.

  946. All those

  947. other things

  948. were the

  949. shadow that

  950. went before

  951. Him.

  952. And so we

  953. see that this

  954. Jewish ceremonial

  955. law, it was

  956. there, and if

  957. you read the

  958. book of

  959. Leviticus,

  960. if you can

  961. make it all

  962. the way

  963. through the

  964. book, then

  965. that's really

  966. awesome, because

  967. it is really,

  968. really tough to

  969. read straight

  970. through the

  971. book of

  972. Leviticus.

  973. We have a

  974. lot of

  975. narrative in

  976. Genesis and

  977. Exodus, and

  978. we get to

  979. Leviticus, and

  980. man, it's like

  981. the narrative

  982. shuts it down,

  983. it's really

  984. difficult to

  985. make it all

  986. the way

  987. through, and

  988. that's really

  989. great.

  990. You think you

  991. should understand

  992. the book of

  993. Leviticus,

  994. because it

  995. teaches us

  996. what was in

  997. the Jewish

  998. ceremonial law

  999. primarily.

  1000. And it also

  1001. teaches us that

  1002. there is no

  1003. way.

  1004. If you look at

  1005. the rules, the

  1006. regulations, all

  1007. the things that

  1008. they had to do

  1009. just to atone for

  1010. sin alone, it's

  1011. unbelievable.

  1012. We can't

  1013. accomplish this as

  1014. humans.

  1015. Okay?

  1016. Christ had to

  1017. accomplish the

  1018. work on the

  1019. cross for us.

  1020. And so, the

  1021. Old Testament, in

  1022. a lot of ways,

  1023. shows us our

  1024. need for the

  1025. gospel, our

  1026. need for Christ.

  1027. Those things

  1028. were the shadow.

  1029. Paul says, the

  1030. one cast in the

  1031. shadow has

  1032. arrived, and

  1033. this is Jesus.

  1034. He is the

  1035. true substance.

  1036. We no longer

  1037. need ritualistic

  1038. food and drink.

  1039. Jesus is the

  1040. bread of life.

  1041. He has come to

  1042. fulfill the

  1043. law.

  1044. Moving right

  1045. along, Paul

  1046. reaches the

  1047. second issue.

  1048. He addresses

  1049. legalism, then he

  1050. moves right

  1051. into discussing

  1052. mysticism.

  1053. So, before we

  1054. get to verse

  1055. 18, what is

  1056. mysticism?

  1057. Simple definition

  1058. is a deeper or

  1059. higher religious

  1060. experience based

  1061. on personal

  1062. intuition.

  1063. So, this is

  1064. some higher

  1065. level of

  1066. spiritualism that

  1067. we're not going

  1068. to find in

  1069. scripture.

  1070. Right?

  1071. So, it's very

  1072. subjective.

  1073. A very

  1074. subjective,

  1075. experiential type

  1076. spirituality.

  1077. There's nothing

  1078. connecting it to

  1079. the word of

  1080. God.

  1081. There's nothing

  1082. that we can

  1083. connect it to

  1084. anything objective.

  1085. And so, this

  1086. experience could

  1087. be anything for

  1088. anybody.

  1089. And so, this is

  1090. what Paul says

  1091. about this.

  1092. Let no one

  1093. disqualify you

  1094. insisting on

  1095. asceticism and

  1096. the worship of

  1097. angels.

  1098. Going on in

  1099. detail about

  1100. visions,

  1101. puffed up without

  1102. reason by his

  1103. sensuous mind.

  1104. These people,

  1105. he's saying,

  1106. are puffed up by

  1107. this experience

  1108. that they had

  1109. where there's

  1110. nothing objective

  1111. about it.

  1112. Don't let

  1113. anyone make

  1114. you think that

  1115. you're missing

  1116. something based

  1117. off of unbiblical

  1118. principles or

  1119. based off of

  1120. principles that

  1121. aren't found in

  1122. scripture.

  1123. In this case,

  1124. it's mysticism and

  1125. asceticism.

  1126. You haven't

  1127. understood until

  1128. you have understood

  1129. the worship of

  1130. angels.

  1131. This is what

  1132. these people say,

  1133. you haven't had

  1134. the right visions,

  1135. you haven't

  1136. properly caused

  1137. yourself enough

  1138. suffering in

  1139. this world like

  1140. I have.

  1141. They inflated

  1142. themselves in

  1143. their own minds

  1144. because of

  1145. their experiences.

  1146. All the while,

  1147. the one thing

  1148. that they're not

  1149. doing is holding

  1150. fast to the

  1151. head.

  1152. Who is who?

  1153. It's Christ.

  1154. There in verse

  1155. 19, and not

  1156. holding fast to

  1157. the head.

  1158. So this version

  1159. of heresy is

  1160. Christ plus my

  1161. visions, plus my

  1162. experiences, plus my

  1163. deeper experience,

  1164. sorry, my

  1165. experiences with

  1166. angels, plus my

  1167. deeper experience.

  1168. The first heresy

  1169. is Christ plus

  1170. rules.

  1171. This all goes

  1172. back again to

  1173. last week.

  1174. When Christ is

  1175. sufficient for

  1176. our grace, we

  1177. don't need

  1178. anything else but

  1179. Christ.

  1180. But these people,

  1181. the heresy they're

  1182. making is saying,

  1183. you need Christ

  1184. plus these other

  1185. things.

  1186. And that is the

  1187. heresy.

  1188. As a believer, do

  1189. you know what you

  1190. need?

  1191. You need Christ.

  1192. Do you know what

  1193. else you need?

  1194. Absolutely nothing.

1195. He is all that you

  1196. need.

  1197. You don't need

  1198. rules.

  1199. You don't need

  1200. mystical experiences.

  1201. You don't need

  1202. anything else under

  1203. the sun.

  1204. You just need to

  1205. hold fast to the

  1206. head from whom

  1207. the whole body

  1208. nourished and knit

  1209. together through its

  1210. joints and ligaments

  1211. grows with the

  1212. growth that is from

  1213. God.

1214. You just hold on to

  1215. the one who's

  1216. holding the entire

  1217. church together.

  1218. Capital C Church,

  1219. which means broad

  1220. spectrum, whole

  1221. world, capital C

  1222. church, the

  1223. church of Jesus

  1224. Christ.

  1225. Not just this

  1226. church, but all the

  1227. churches who are

  1228. gathering right now

  1229. and with one voice

  1230. worshiping God all

  1231. together this morning.

  1232. That's what we're

  1233. talking about.

  1234. He holds the

  1235. church together.

  1236. Don't be intimidated

1237. by the world and all

  1238. its empty philosophy.

  1239. Don't be distracted

  1240. by other people's

  1241. mystical experiences

  1242. or their man-made

  1243. rules.

  1244. Peter tells us,

  1245. you have received

  1246. all things pertaining

  1247. to life and

  1248. godliness.

  1249. You have already

  1250. received it.

  1251. You don't need

  1252. anything else.

  1253. You have Christ.

  1254. Verse 20.

  1255. If with Christ you

  1256. die to the elemental

  1257. spirits of the world,

1258. why, as if you were

  1259. still alive in the

  1260. world, do you

  1261. submit to regulations?

  1262. Do not handle,

  1263. do not taste,

  1264. do not touch.

  1265. He says,

  1266. your union with

  1267. Christ and his

  1268. death has caused

1269. you to die to the

  1270. elemental spirits of

  1271. the world, which

  1272. means you have

  1273. essentially died to

  1274. the philosophy and

  1275. everything else that

  1276. exists in this world.

  1277. He's primarily

  1278. speaking to

  1279. asceticism here,

  1280. which is following

  1281. a set of man-made

  1282. rules to gain

  1283. higher favor with

  1284. God.

  1285. It's asceticism.

  1286. Let me explain

  1287. this further for you.

  1288. Typically, what

  1289. this looked like

  1290. during Paul's time

  1291. and what he's

  1292. addressing is the

  1293. removing of earthly

  1294. comforts for a

  1295. higher level of

  1296. spirituality.

  1297. And so, the way

  1298. this played out was

  1299. typically a

  1300. monasticism or

  1301. what we would call

  1302. the monks who

  1303. are trying to

  1304. gain a higher

  1305. level of

  1306. spirituality by

  1307. adding more rules

  1308. to their life and

  1309. taking away earthly

  1310. comforts.

  1311. So, this is what

  1312. the monks would

  1313. typically do.

  1314. They would remove

  1315. comforts anywhere from

  1316. shelter all the way

  1317. to comfortable

  1318. clothes.

  1319. They would wear

  1320. fabrics, oftentimes

  1321. such as burlap,

  1322. in order to make

  1323. themselves more

  1324. uncomfortable in

  1325. this life.

  1326. And that was

  1327. somehow supposed to

  1328. ascribe more

  1329. spirituality or this

  1330. higher experience

  1331. with God.

  1332. Some of them would

1333. even go as far as

  1334. to wear cotton

  1335. robes over

  1336. their uncomfortable

  1337. garments underneath,

  1338. their burlap or

  1339. whatever they wore

  1340. underneath, so that

  1341. they didn't get

  1342. favor from men,

  1343. thereby not receiving

  1344. more spirituality

  1345. from God.

  1346. This very strange

  1347. religious thing.

  1348. Early monks would

  1349. remove themselves from

  1350. the general populations,

  1351. you know, thinking

  1352. that, hey, we should

  1353. just completely remove

  1354. ourselves from the

  1355. world and that we

  1356. should go and live

  1357. secluded lifestyles,

  1358. some of them living

  1359. in caves, abandoning

  1360. the traditional

  1361. homes and things

  1362. like that, things

  1363. of that nature.

  1364. Some of them would

  1365. even go to this,

  1366. there's one particular

1367. place that a lot of

  1368. them went to where

  1369. there's these natural

  1370. stone pillars and

  1371. they would make their

1372. way up to the top

  1373. of the stone pillars

  1374. and that's where they

  1375. would hang out, days

  1376. on end.

  1377. And they would live

  1378. in solitude, that way

  1379. nobody can bother

  1380. them.

  1381. And then,

  1382. naturally, people see

  1383. this as a spectacle

  1384. and people by the

  1385. hundreds, often times

  1386. would come out to

  1387. this place and they

  1388. would just gaze upon

  1389. these men with a

  1390. higher calling in life

  1391. and just gaze up

  1392. at them, like, man,

  1393. what a spiritual person

  1394. for sitting up there

  1395. on that column.

  1396. I just, I don't get

  1397. it.

1398. And I'm sure that the

  1399. laughter is because you

  1400. don't get it either.

  1401. That makes sense.

  1402. Some of these monks

  1403. even consider it sinful

  1404. to take a bath.

  1405. That's just wrong.

  1406. Gotta be clean.

  1407. And of course, those

  1408. things don't bring about

  1409. godliness.

  1410. They don't bring about

  1411. godliness.

  1412. These things are

  1413. works-based and they

  1414. are in accordance with

  1415. human precepts and

  1416. human teachings,

  1417. according to verse 22.

  1418. Then verse 23.

  1419. We have indeed an

  1420. appearance of wisdom

  1421. in promoting self-made

  1422. religion and

  1423. asceticism and

  1424. severity to the body,

1425. but they are of no

  1426. value in stopping the

  1427. indulgence of the flesh.

1428. He says they are of no

  1429. value.

  1430. All of these things,

  1431. this legalism,

  1432. mysticism,

  1433. asceticism,

  1434. they all have the

  1435. reputation of wisdom.

  1436. wisdom.

  1437. They all, in other

  1438. words, they look like

  1439. wisdom to the world.

  1440. You look at them,

1441. they keep all the rules,

  1442. they have these higher

  1443. visions, they apparently

1444. go up on pillars and

  1445. sit alone all day,

  1446. praying to God.

1447. They take away all the

  1448. comforts that are

  1449. available to them.

  1450. And this looks good

1451. to the world or to the

  1452. untrained, unthinking

  1453. mind.

  1454. It looks good because

  1455. they are attributing

  1456. these things to

  1457. spirituality.

  1458. spirituality.

  1459. It's a godless

  1460. religion because

  1461. they're really doing

  1462. this for who?

  1463. They're really doing

  1464. it for themselves.

  1465. They're really doing

1466. it so they can obtain

  1467. some higher level of

  1468. spirituality.

  1469. And in the appearance

  1470. of humility, they are

1471. nothing but a mask of

  1472. spiritual pride.

1473. They did this for their

  1474. own spiritual pride.

  1475. Now, does this mean

1476. that we should just all

1477. go and indulge in every

  1478. worldly comfort that is

  1479. out there as believers?

  1480. Should we indulge

  1481. ourselves in everything

  1482. that is out there?

  1483. No.

1484. Because a lot of these

  1485. earthly comforts are

  1486. sin.

  1487. One of the prerequisites

  1488. to following Christ is

  1489. denying yourself.

  1490. Denying yourself.

  1491. These people, these

  1492. ascetics, these people

  1493. who are doing these

  1494. different things that

  1495. are attributing higher

  1496. righteousness to

  1497. themselves, they're not

  1498. doing this for

  1499. righteousness.

  1500. They're not doing it

  1501. to follow Christ.

  1502. They're doing it for a

  1503. higher level of

  1504. spirituality.

  1505. They're doing it for

  1506. themselves.

  1507. So Jesus said in

  1508. Matthew 16 and 24,

  1509. If anyone would come

1510. after me, let him deny

  1511. himself, take up his

  1512. cross, and follow me.

  1513. Self-denial is key.

  1514. But asceticism is not

  1515. self-denial.

  1516. It's the practice of

  1517. self-righteousness.

1518. And when we try to

  1519. attribute righteousness

  1520. to ourselves apart from

1521. God, we end up in sin.

1522. It's an attempt to make

1523. the self look better, and

  1524. therefore, it is the

  1525. opposite of self-denial.

1526. If Christ is supreme, if

  1527. Christ is sufficient, we

  1528. don't need the world.

1529. We don't have to have all

  1530. the comforts in the

  1531. world.

1532. Is it okay to wear

  1533. cotton clothes?

  1534. Yes.

  1535. That's fine to wear

  1536. cotton clothes.

  1537. But we need Christ.

  1538. And that is all.

  1539. That is all.

1540. And we see Paul here,

  1541. heresy after heresy,

  1542. stepping through,

  1543. combating it with

  1544. biblical truth, with

  1545. biblical understanding.

  1546. And so Paul argues,

  1547. you don't need extra

  1548. man-made rules.

  1549. You don't need

  1550. asceticism.

  1551. You don't need

  1552. mysticism.

  1553. You don't need

  1554. worldly philosophy.

  1555. What you need is

  1556. Christ, and Christ

  1557. alone.

1558. And in light of our

1559. culture that seems to be

  1560. increasingly celebrating

  1561. sin over Christ,

  1562. that's exactly what we

1563. need to give the world.

  1564. There's a picture of

  1565. Him.

1566. we need to give them

  1567. the gospel.

  1568. And in our words,

  1569. and in our actions,

  1570. and our example,

1571. and the way that we

  1572. engage people that are

  1573. around us, God has

  1574. given you an influence.

1575. No matter who you are,

1576. you know people, and God

1577. has placed you in this

  1578. influence that you have

1579. to be able to talk to

  1580. people.

1581. You have the ability to

  1582. communicate with these

1583. people, and you have the

  1584. ability to communicate

  1585. God's truth.

  1586. So let's be confident

  1587. and work toward

  1588. understanding what we

  1589. believe, why we believe

1590. it, and the ability to

  1591. communicate to others

  1592. effectively.

  1593. God's Word.

  1594. Let's pray together.
