  1. It's an honor and a privilege to be here with you once again.

  2. For those of you who may not know me, my name is Jonathan Hoffman.

  3. ! I am a current graduate, or recent graduate, of the apprenticeship program that we have here at Christ Family Church.

  4. And so, in part, that is a reason why I have been invited and given this privilege today.

  5. So, it is quite an honor for me to be allowed this opportunity.

  6. And, just to share something with you that has been in my heart.

  7. I moved up here to North Georgia in order to go to Bible college.

  8. I was converted, became a Christian about almost four years ago.

  9. And, God has so powerfully moved in my life since then.

  10. And, I moved up here with the mindset of, I want the rest of my life to revolve around these truths that I had found.

  11. That my eyes had been open to.

  12. And, so, I have come to feel the sense of calling into the ministry.

  13. A burden to preach God's Word because I believe that it is the only thing, as Scripture says, that has the power to save.

  14. And, so, it is a privilege to be given this opportunity.

  15. But, at the same time, I moved up here and I left my dream career of law enforcement because it had become an idol.

  16. And, I believe it was Calvin.

  17. Calvin, I could be wrong.

  18. But, a whole theologian once said that the heart is an idol factory.

  19. We create gods by the dozens, by the thousands even, in our hearts.

  20. And, so, while I was going through Bible college, Tripp McConnell, for about a year,

  21. one of the greatest convictions that has come upon me of my own sin is my battle with my pride.

  22. It is a tremendous, tremendous battle that I have to fight with my pride.

  23. And, it is why I left law enforcement.

  24. And, while I was going through Bible college, and even now, my pride is still an issue to where I felt like I am constantly in danger of giving myself over to my pride in my learning now.

  25. You know, I am going through Bible college, and I am learning all these great things and these great truths.

  26. And, my fear is that I am doing it for the wrong reasons.

  27. I constantly keep that in check.

  28. And, God has given me a lot of grace in battling that.

  29. And, so, I tell you that because I believe that even preaching can be turned into an idol.

  30. And, it is my greatest fear this morning and for my future that I will turn preaching into an idol.

  31. Because I can write a good paper, or because I can use eloquent words, or so on and so forth.

  32. And, so, that has been my greatest battle in preparing for this sermon is to make sure that my pride is at check.

  33. So, that I will be able to preach in power through the Spirit.

  34. That I would be as a clean vessel for His Word to come through me.

  35. And, so, I pray this morning and I ask you, I ask every one of you to pray along with me.

  36. That, that would be the case.

  37. And, I ask that every one of you would pay attention.

  38. Pay close attention because there are waiting matters at hand here this morning.

  39. And, so, pray for yourselves as well.

  40. That God would soften your hearts.

  41. And, that we would be changed by what we learned today.

  42. And, so, I hope that that is the case this morning.

  43. If God would see it fit, that that would be the case.

  44. So, please turn with me to the book of Colossians chapter 3.

    Colossians 3 chapter mention

  45. Colossians chapter 3.

    Colossians 3 chapter mention

  46. And, just to give you a quick review for those who have not been with us for the last few weeks.

  47. We have been going verse by verse through the book of Colossians.

  48. The book of Colossians is a letter that the Apostle Paul wrote to the church at Colossae.

  49. And, now, Colossae was a city in modern day Turkey.

  50. And, it was about 100 miles east of Ephesus, the city of Ephesus.

  51. Now, Paul had never visited Colossae.

  52. And, so, it is believed that the church there was started by a man by the name of Epaphras.

  53. Epaphras, who was converted during a visit to Ephesus where Paul, the Apostle, was ministering there for three years.

  54. And, Colossae was primarily a Gentile city but had a fairly large Jewish population.

  55. And, so, as the gospel spread and the church at Colossae was established, it consisted of a mixture of Jews and Gentiles.

  56. A dangerous heresy then arose in the church.

  57. And, this heresy contained a mixture of Jewish mysticism and pagan, or Jewish legalism, I'm sorry, and pagan mysticism.

  58. It began to cause division in the church.

  59. And, Epaphras, being so concerned about the people of that church, made a journey to Rome to ask for Paul's help in combating this heresy.

  60. Now, Paul was, at the time, in Rome in prison.

  61. He was in a Roman prison.

  62. And, it was around the same time that Paul wrote the letter to Philemon, the letter to the Ephesians, and the letter to the Philippians.

  63. And, this one in particular was primarily for that initial purpose of combating this heresy.

  64. And, so, in the last few weeks, we have been going through the book of Colossians, and we have now reached chapter 3.

  65. And, in the first two chapters, we have seen that we have been given a lot of doctrine.

  66. The first two chapters are a lot of doctrine.

  67. And, this seems to be a pattern with Paul in his letters.

  68. First, he gives us doctrine, and then he follows it by practical exhortations or application.

  69. And, so, it is the case here.

  70. And, one of the reasons for that is because good life application must be founded upon good doctrine.

  71. And, so, our text this morning will be Colossians chapter 3, verses 1 through 4.

    Colossians 3:1–4

  72. Colossians chapter 3, verses 1 through 4.

    Colossians 3:1–4

  73. And, as we begin to look at the practical application portion of this letter, I would like to actually start reading from chapter 2, verse 20.

  74. So, please look with me at chapter 2, verse 20 of the book of Colossians.

  75. And, God's Word, which is inerrant, infallible, and sharper than any two-edged sword, reads,

  76. If with Christ you died to the elemental spirits of the world, why, as if you were still alive in the world, do you submit to regulations?

  77. Do not handle, do not taste, do not touch, referring to things that all perish as they are used, according to human precepts and teachings.

  78. These have indeed an appearance of wisdom in promoting self-made religion and asceticism and severity to the body.

  79. But they are of no value in stopping the indulgence of the flesh.

  80. If, then, you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.

  81. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.

  82. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.

  83. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory.

  84. Pray with me.

  85. Father, we thank You this morning, Lord, for Your work, Lord, that You have achieved, accomplished.

  86. Lord, for sending Christ to die for us on the cross, Lord, that we might be reconciled to You.

  87. Lord, that we may receive of this free gift of salvation, conversion, Lord, where You give us a new heart,

  88. with new desires and an ability to understand Your Word and to love You and follow Your ways.

  89. Lord, I pray that Your Spirit will be at work within me this morning,

  90. and within all of those who are in this building.

  91. Lord, that You would bring about conviction.

  92. Lord, that You would change hearts.

  93. Please, Lord, we pray for that.

  94. Illumine our minds, Lord.

  95. Change us.

  96. Please, change us.

  97. Lord, we thank You, we praise You, and we love You.

  98. In Jesus' name, amen.

  99. Amen.

  100. It was R.C. Sproul, who is currently a pastor for St. Andrew's Chapel in Sanford, Florida,

  101. and the founder of Ligonier Ministries, who once said of modern Christianity,

  102. and I quote,

  103. It is a dangerous thing for the Christian's mind to be trapped within the confines of the terrestrial horizon.

  104. Close quote.

  105. It is a dangerous thing for the Christian's mind to be trapped within the confines of the terrestrial horizon,

  106. to be earth-grounded instead of lifted up.

  107. And it was, for example, for this reason,

  108. that the Lord Jesus Christ rebukes Peter so harshly.

  109. In Matthew 16, verse 23,

    Matthew 16:23

  110. as He says to His beloved disciple,

  111. Peter, who would become a giant contender of the faith,

  112. a leader amongst Christians,

  113. one whom the book of Revelation, in chapter 21, verse 14,

  114. says that His name will be written on the foundation stones of the wall of the New Jerusalem.

  115. It is to this apostle Peter

  116. that Jesus rebukes by saying,

  117. Get behind me, Satan.

  118. Why?

  119. Jesus goes on,

  120. Because you are not setting your mind on the things of God,

  121. but on the things of man.

  122. Peter, a true Christian,

  123. at that moment had his mind trapped within the confines of the terrestrial horizon,

  124. and our Lord called him Satan for it.

  125. It is a hindrance upon the believer to be effective in kingdom work.

  126. It is a serious and dangerous place to be,

  127. and from it arise many of our maladies today,

  128. such as depression, covetousness,

  129. pride, strife,

  130. idolatry,

  131. etc.

  132. The Christian should have his mind set on the things that are above,

  133. not on the things of the earth.

  134. And in our text this morning,

  135. we will see the difference between,

  136. and the implications of,

  137. earthly and heavenly mindedness.

  138. And so I have divided this text into four sections,

  139. or four headings.

  140. And for our first heading,

  141. I want you to notice the subject of the exhortations.

  142. The subject of the exhortation.

  143. Beginning in verse 1 of chapter 3.

  144. If then you have been raised with Christ.

  145. Now stop right there.

  146. Who are the subjects of this exhortation?

  147. If then you have been raised with Christ,

  148. it's Christians.

  149. It is true born again believers

  150. that the Apostle Paul is addressing here.

  151. Now it is the true condition of the church.

  152. In our day,

  153. as much as it was in Paul's day,

  154. that not everyone who attends church services,

  155. and not everyone who goes to Sunday school,

  156. and not everyone who even becomes a member of a church,

  157. or reads their Bible every day,

  158. or does all sorts of activity in the name of Jesus,

  159. is a true Christian.

  160. And for the purpose of our text this morning,

  161. this truth has massive implications.

  162. Why?

  163. Well, let's look first at the purpose of the exhortation.

  164. What is the reason behind this text

  165. that we are looking at this morning?

  166. Verse 1.

  167. If then.

  168. The if then here can also be translated,

  169. therefore, if.

  170. The therefore is a conjunction

  171. connecting the last paragraph of chapter 3,

  172. or of chapter 2,

  173. to the first paragraph of chapter 3.

  174. And so that's why we started reading from chapter 2, verse 20.

  175. So let's read that again,

  176. starting in verse 20.

  177. If with Christ you died to the elemental spirits of the world,

  178. why, as if you were still alive in the world,

  179. do you submit to regulations?

  180. Do not handle, do not taste, do not touch,

  181. referring to those things that all perish as they are used,

  182. according to human precepts and teachings.

  183. These have indeed an appearance of wisdom

  184. in promoting self-made religion,

  185. and asceticism and severity to the body.

  186. But.

  187. But.

  188. Now here is the purpose of the exhortation

  189. that is to come in chapter 3.

  190. They are of no value

  191. in stopping the indulgence of the flesh.

  192. The main purpose of this exhortation

  193. is for the true Christian

  194. to be given the key

  195. to stopping the indulgence of the flesh.

  196. And so it is important

  197. to understand that Paul here,

  198. first of all,

  199. is saying that you must be

  200. a Christian

  201. if you are to attain

  202. any degree of this

  203. truth with any value.

  204. Otherwise, all you have

  205. is someone in the flesh

  206. trying to stop

  207. the indulgence of the flesh,

  208. which kind of reminds me

  209. of a saying of our Lord,

  210. and if Satan cast out Satan,

  211. he is divided against himself,

  212. how then will his kingdom stand?

  213. It is these people

  214. who in the power of the flesh

  215. try to stop the indulgence of the flesh

  216. that Paul warns us of

  217. and warns us against.

  218. Those who try to mortify the flesh

  219. through self-made religion,

  220. asceticism,

  221. and severity to the body.

  222. And even Paul says

  223. that these things

  224. appear to be wise.

  225. If you look at these people,

  226. you might think to yourself,

  227. wow,

  228. how righteous they are,

  229. what piety,

  230. what discipline.

  231. But behind the smoke and mirrors,

  232. there is no true power.

  233. Kyle taught us last week

  234. some about this.

  235. He said that these people

  236. practice these things

  237. to try to reach

  238. a higher level of spirituality

  239. by reducing earthly comforts.

  240. But in reality,

  241. it is a practice

  242. of self-righteousness,

  243. not self-denial.

  244. And this,

  245. at its core,

  246. is idolatry.

  247. These people

  248. who try these

  249. have created

  250. a God

  251. in their image,

  252. in their own mind,

  253. to suit

  254. their own desires.

  255. And they try

  256. to gain God's favor

  257. and even salvation

  258. through their works.

  259. Now,

  260. these false doctrines

  261. have been widespread

  262. all throughout history.

  263. And it is true

  264. of just about

  265. every religion

  266. that is not Christian.

  267. And it is also the case

  268. in those who

  269. entitle themselves

  270. to be Christian,

  271. but are not really

  272. Christian.

  273. I say that

  274. of such

  275. religions

  276. as

  277. such as Mormonism,

  278. Jehovah's Witnesses,

  279. and yes,

  280. even the Catholic Church.

  281. Now,

  282. let me give you

  283. just two quick examples

  284. of this asceticism.

  285. Now,

  286. Paul wrote this letter

  287. in about 60

  288. to 62 A.D.

  289. And in A.D. 52,

  290. at the age of 16,

  291. the historian Josephus

  292. wrote about

  293. three major sects

  294. or philosophies

  295. amongst the Jews.

  296. Now,

  297. Pastor Nathan

  298. quoted this portion

  299. a few weeks back

  300. where Josephus says

  301. that

  302. the first

  303. were the Pharisees,

  304. then the Sadducees,

  305. and the third

  306. were the

  307. Essenes.

  308. Now,

  309. the Essenes

  310. were a group

  311. that were

  312. dedicated to

  313. asceticism.

  314. And Josephus

  315. writes of them,

  316. and I quote,

  317. I contended myself

  318. with hard fare

  319. and underwent

  320. great difficulties

  321. and went through

  322. them all,

  323. nor did I contend

  324. myself with these

  325. trials only.

  326. But when I was

  327. informed that one

  328. whose name was

  329. Banus,

  330. who was an

  331. Esseni,

  332. who lived in the

  333. desert

  334. and used

  335. no other clothing

  336. than that which

  337. grew upon trees

  338. and had no other

  339. food than what

  340. grew of its own

  341. accord,

  342. and bathed

  343. himself in

  344. cold water

  345. frequently,

  346. both by night

  347. and by day,

  348. in order to

  349. preserve his

  350. chastity.

  351. I imitated

  352. him in those

  353. things and

  354. continued with

  355. him for three

  356. years.

  357. Did you catch

  358. that?

  359. That man,

  360. Banus,

  361. tortured himself

  362. with cold water

  363. multiple times a

  364. day in order to

  365. stop the indulgence

  366. of the flesh.

  367. But there was

  368. no power.

  369. There was no

  370. true power.

  371. And Josephus,

  372. thinking this

  373. lifestyle to be

  374. wise,

  375. imitated him for

  376. three years.

  377. Now here's

  378. another example.

  379. Historian Edward

  380. Gibbon, in his

  381. book, The

  382. History of the

  383. Decline and the

  384. Fall of the

  385. Roman Empire,

  386. writes of a

  387. Roman Catholic

  388. monk, Dominic

  389. Loricatus, and

  390. how he tried to

  391. gain God's

  392. favor and

  393. forgiveness of

  394. sin.

  395. And listen to

  396. what he writes.

  397. I quote,

  398. It is a

  399. maxim of the

  400. civil law that

  401. whosoever cannot

  402. pay with his

  403. purse must pay

  404. with his body.

  405. Now this law,

  406. by the way,

  407. came from the

  408. Catholic Church.

  409. In the practice

  410. of flagellation,

  411. that being the

  412. practice of

  413. whipping or

  414. lashing oneself

  415. for the purpose

  416. of mortification,

  417. asceticism or

  418. penance,

  419. was adopted

  420. by the monks,

  421. a cheap

  422. though painful

  423. equivalent.

  424. He continues,

  425. by fantastic

  426. arithmetic,

  427. a year of

  428. penance was

  429. taxed at

  430. 3,000

  431. lashes.

  432. And such

  433. was the

  434. skill and

  435. patience of

  436. a famous

  437. hermit,

  438. St.

  439. Dominic of

  440. the Iron

  441. Curios,

  442. that in

  443. six days,

  444. he could

  445. discharge an

  446. entire century

  447. by a

  448. whipping of

  449. 300,000

  450. stripes.

  451. His example

  452. was followed

  453. by many

  454. penitents

  455. of both

  456. sexes.

  457. And as a

  458. vicarious

  459. sacrifice

  460. was accepted,

  461. a sturdy

  462. disciplinarian

  463. might expiate

  464. on his own

  465. back the

  466. sins of

  467. his benefactors.

  468. Close quote.

  469. They thought

  470. that they

  471. could get

  472. forgiveness

  473. of sins

  474. through these

  475. works.

  476. And even

  477. worse,

  478. they thought

  479. that they

  480. could get

  481. forgiveness

  482. of other

  483. sins by

  484. their own

  485. works,

  486. by whipping

  487. themselves.

  488. And many

  489. looked up

  490. to this

  491. guy,

  492. Dominic,

  493. as a

  494. saint.

  495. They thought

  496. it was wise

  497. what he

  498. was doing.

  499. They thought

  500. there was

  501. power and

  502. value behind

  503. it.

  504. And even

  505. the Catholic

  506. Church

  507. venerated

  508. him as a

  509. saint.

  510. This

  511. has the

  512. appearance

  513. of wisdom

  514. but there

  515. is no

  516. power.

  517. It is

  518. of no

  519. value

  520. in stopping

  521. the indulgence

  522. of the

  523. flesh.

  524. And so

  525. in order

  526. for there

  527. to be

  528. any value

  529. in stopping

  530. the indulgence

  531. of the

  532. flesh,

  533. there must

  534. be power

  535. from on

  536. high.

  537. And so

  538. in order

  539. for there

  540. to be

  541. power,

  542. you must

  543. be a

  544. true

  545. Christian.

  546. Christian.

  547. Now I'm

  548. very thankful

  549. for this

  550. church and

  551. for our

  552. pastor because

  553. the true

  554. gospel is

  555. preached here

  556. on a

  557. regular and

  558. consistent

  559. basis.

  560. But I do

  561. have a

  562. fear that

  563. some of

  564. you may

  565. believe

  566. yourselves

  567. to be

  568. Christians

  569. this morning

  570. simply because

  571. you come

  572. to a very

  573. biblical

  574. church.

  575. church,

  576. you know

  577. the terminology.

  578. You know

  579. what to say.

  580. You know

  581. how to act.

  582. You know

  583. how to answer

  584. questions of

  585. the faith.

  586. You may

  587. even know

  588. your Bible,

  589. but inside

  590. you are

  591. not truly

  592. changed.

  593. You have

  594. not been

  595. born again.

  596. And so

  597. you do

  598. not know

  599. Christ and

  600. Christ does

  601. not know

  602. you.

  603. And so

  604. I ask

  605. every one

  606. of you

  607. this morning

  608. to please

  609. examine

  610. yourselves,

  611. examine your

  612. heart,

  613. test your

  614. heart,

  615. make sure

  616. that you

  617. are truly

  618. in the

  619. faith.

  620. Because my

  621. biggest fear

  622. is that some

  623. of you are

  624. comfortable in

  625. your deception

  626. and are just

  627. playing church

  628. and going

  629. through the

  630. motions.

  631. And may

  632. one day open

  633. your eyes to

  634. the torment

  635. that is

  636. hell for

  637. eternity.

  638. So please

  639. examine

  640. yourself.

  641. There is

  642. so much

  643. at stake.

  644. So much

  645. at stake.

  646. And so

  647. in direct

  648. correlation to

  649. Paul warning

  650. against heretical

  651. teaching,

  652. let's look at

  653. some characteristics

  654. of what a

  655. true Christian

  656. is.

  657. If you would

  658. turn with

  659. me to

  660. Philippians

    Philippians 3 chapter mention

  661. chapter 3.

  662. Philippians

    Philippians 3 chapter mention

  663. chapter 3.

  664. And look

  665. at verse

  666. 2.

  667. The

  668. apostle Paul

  669. says,

  670. look out

  671. for the

  672. dogs,

  673. look out

  674. for the

  675. evildoers,

  676. look out

  677. for those

  678. who mutilate

  679. the flesh.

  680. Now in

  681. this context,

  682. one of the

  683. major heretical

  684. sects that

  685. Paul was

  686. combating here

  687. were the

  688. Judaizers,

  689. who were

  690. all about

  691. works and

  692. external things.

  693. Do not

  694. touch,

  695. do not

  696. handle,

  697. do not

  698. taste.

  699. they clung

  700. to ceremonial

  701. laws and

  702. insisted on

  703. such things

  704. as circumcision.

  705. Paul is

  706. saying here,

  707. look at

  708. verse 3,

  709. now what he

  710. says to

  711. that,

  712. for we

  713. are the

  714. circumcision.

  715. Paul is

  716. saying we

  717. are the

  718. true

  719. circumcision.

  720. Who

  721. what?

  722. Who

  723. worship

  724. by the

  725. Spirit of

  726. God and

  727. glory in

  728. Christ Jesus

  729. and put

  730. no confidence

  731. in the

  732. flesh.

  733. And there

  734. is a

  735. characteristic

  736. of a

  737. true

  738. Christian

  739. who

  740. worship

  741. by the

  742. Spirit of

  743. God.

  744. Who

  745. worship

  746. by the

  747. Spirit of

  748. God.

  749. If you

  750. are a

  751. true

  752. Christian,

  753. if you

  754. are a

  755. born-again

  756. believer of

  757. the supernatural

  758. working of

  759. the Spirit

  760. of God,

  761. the rest

  762. of your

  763. life from

  764. the moment

  765. of conversion

  766. will be

  767. marked by

  768. Spirit-drawn,

  769. Spirit-filled,

  770. Spirit-empowered

  771. worship.

  772. And what I

  773. mean by this

  774. is not that

  775. you come to

  776. church and

  777. sing songs

  778. and go to

  779. Sunday school

  780. or Bible

  781. studies or

  782. listen to the

  783. Christian radio

  784. on your way

  785. here.

  786. God

  787. what I

  788. mean by

  789. this is

  790. have your

  791. eyes

  792. truly been

  793. opened

  794. to the

  795. reality of

  796. what Christ

  797. has done

  798. to what

  799. he has

  800. accomplished

  801. for you

  802. to what

  803. he has

  804. saved you

  805. from

  806. to the

  807. blessings and

  808. promises that

  809. have been

  810. poured out

  811. on you

  812. that all

  813. you desire

  814. for the rest

  815. of your life

  816. from that

  817. moment that

  818. you were

  819. converted is

  820. to worship

  821. him and

  822. to order

  823. the rest of

  824. your life

  825. in such a

  826. way as best

  827. to please

  828. him.

  829. It isn't

  830. something that

  831. you are

  832. forced to

  833. do for the

  834. sake of

  835. religion but

  836. rather the

  837. Spirit of

  838. God within

  839. you softens

  840. your heart

  841. that you

  842. come to

  843. love him

  844. and thank

  845. him and

  846. want to

  847. know more

  848. about him

  849. and long

  850. for him

  851. and you

  852. long for

  853. his return

  854. and you

  855. long for

  856. him to be

  857. honored

  858. and for

  859. his name

  860. to be

  861. glorified

  862. and proclaimed

  863. in all

  864. the nations

  865. is this

  866. true of

  867. you?

  868. Do you

  869. ever just

  870. fall flat

  871. on your

  872. face

  873. and worship

  874. and weep

  875. out of your

  876. love for

  877. him in

  878. remembrance of

  879. what he has

  880. done for

  881. you?

  882. Are you

  883. a true

  884. Christian?

  885. Here's

  886. another

  887. characteristic

  888. of a

  889. true

  890. Christian.

  891. Do you

  892. have a

  893. new

  894. relationship

  895. with sin?

  896. Have

  897. your

  898. desires

  899. changed?

  900. Do you

  901. now hate

  902. your sin?

  903. Do you

  904. see it

  905. more than

  906. ever before?

  907. Or do you

  908. just hate

  909. the thought

  910. of people

  911. finding out

  912. about it?

  913. Have you

  914. in your

  915. innermost

  916. being

  917. been

  918. changed?

  919. Spurgeon,

  920. the prince

  921. of preachers,

  922. a British

  923. pastor from

  924. the 1800s,

  925. used to

  926. describe

  927. conversion

  928. with an

  929. illustration

  930. that went

  931. something like

  932. this.

  933. Say you

  934. have two

  935. plates and

  936. you set

  937. them on

  938. the ground

  939. and on

  940. one plate

  941. you have

  942. some of

  943. the finest

  944. cuisine of

  945. the land

  946. and on

  947. the other

  948. you have

  949. a bag

  950. or correction

  951. you have

  952. just a

  953. contents

  954. of a

  955. bag

  956. from a

  957. household

  958. trash can

  959. and you

  960. get a

  961. pig

  962. and you

  963. let this

  964. pig go

  965. to eat

  966. which

  967. plate

  968. is he

  969. going to

  970. go to?

  971. The two

  972. plates are

  973. sitting

  974. side by

  975. side.

  976. More

  977. than likely

  978. nine out

  979. of ten

  980. times

  981. that pig

  982. will go

  983. to

  984. the one

  985. with the

  986. trash.

  987. It's a

  988. pig.

  989. It likes

  990. trash.

  991. Now say

  992. that in

  993. one

  994. instance

  995. while that

  996. pig

  997. is

  998. pigging

  999. out

  1000. to this

  1001. trash

  1002. you

  1003. by a

  1004. supernatural

  1005. working

  1006. are able

  1007. to convert

  1008. him

  1009. into a

  1010. man

  1011. what will

  1012. happen?

  1013. That man

  1014. who is

  1015. currently

  1016. eating

  1017. that

  1018. trash

  1019. will be

  1020. disgusted

  1021. by what

  1022. he's

  1023. eating

  1024. by what

  1025. he has

  1026. put in

  1027. his

  1028. mouth

  1029. and he

  1030. will spit

  1031. it out

  1032. and be

  1033. ashamed

  1034. that he

  1035. ever went

  1036. to that

  1037. plate.

  1038. His

  1039. relationship

  1040. with that

  1041. plate

  1042. will change

  1043. forever.

  1044. I promise

  1045. you he

  1046. will

  1047. hopefully

  1048. go

  1049. to the

  1050. fine

  1051. cuisine

  1052. from that

  1053. moment on.

  1054. But if he

  1055. ever were to

  1056. return to

  1057. that other

  1058. plate

  1059. that relationship

  1060. is different

  1061. though he

  1062. may have

  1063. enjoyed it

  1064. at one

  1065. time if he

  1066. tries to

  1067. eat of

  1068. that trash

  1069. this time

  1070. as time

  1071. progresses

  1072. he will be

  1073. more and

  1074. more repulsed

  1075. by it.

  1076. The

  1077. relationship

  1078. with it

  1079. is different

  1080. because he

  1081. has been

  1082. changed

  1083. and that

  1084. is an

  1085. illustration

  1086. of conversion.

  1087. It is a

  1088. powerful thing.

  1089. It is a

  1090. supernatural

  1091. work of

  1092. God.

  1093. God, have

  1094. you

  1095. experienced

  1096. this

  1097. change?

  1098. Friend, if

  1099. you do not

  1100. have some

  1101. measure of

  1102. this, it

  1103. could be

  1104. because you

  1105. are walking

  1106. the wrong

  1107. path.

  1108. You could

  1109. be on the

  1110. road that

  1111. is broad

  1112. that leads

  1113. to destruction.

  1114. And so I

  1115. urge you and

  1116. I beg you to

  1117. repent, to

  1118. put your

  1119. trust in

  1120. Christ for

  1121. he alone

  1122. can save

  1123. you.

  1124. There is

  1125. nothing in

  1126. and of

  1127. yourselves

  1128. that you

  1129. could ever

  1130. do, anything

  1131. that could

  1132. come out

  1133. of your

  1134. mouths to

  1135. justify you

  1136. before a

  1137. holy God.

  1138. Nothing.

  1139. Nothing.

  1140. Nothing.

  1141. Turn from

  1142. your sins.

  1143. Forsake those

  1144. things which

  1145. you love, that

  1146. you know are

  1147. wrong.

  1148. Because they

  1149. are going

  1150. against God.

  1151. Sin is

  1152. transgression of

  1153. the law.

  1154. It is a

  1155. crime against

  1156. God.

  1157. It is a

  1158. crime against

  1159. the one who

  1160. gave you

  1161. life, who

  1162. gave you

  1163. everything that

  1164. you have, who

  1165. cares for you,

  1166. who created

  1167. all things.

  1168. Flee from

  1169. the wrath to

  1170. come.

  1171. Please do

  1172. not harden

  1173. your hearts.

  1174. Do not

  1175. harden your

  1176. hearts.

  1177. Repent.

  1178. Trust in

  1179. Christ.

  1180. Believe the

  1181. gospel today.

  1182. Right now.

  1183. Repent.

  1184. And if you

  1185. are one who

  1186. has been

  1187. playing church,

  1188. please,

  1189. please let

  1190. someone know.

  1191. Let someone

  1192. know there is

  1193. so much at

  1194. stake here.

  1195. I promise you

  1196. that there would

  1197. be no

  1198. condemnation from

  1199. whoever you

  1200. go to.

  1201. If you

  1202. have not

  1203. experienced any

  1204. degree of

  1205. this, please,

  1206. what every

  1207. one of us

  1208. desire is

  1209. your salvation,

  1210. because we

  1211. love you and

  1212. care for you.

  1213. Please, let

  1214. someone know.

  1215. Now, I

  1216. don't want to

  1217. bring unnecessary

  1218. doubt to some

  1219. of you true

  1220. Christians.

  1221. Some of you

  1222. could simply be

  1223. struggling against

  1224. apathy.

  1225. and your

  1226. fire just

  1227. needs to be

  1228. rekindled.

  1229. Preach the

  1230. gospel to

  1231. yourself.

  1232. Remember,

  1233. cling to the

  1234. promises.

  1235. Remember what

  1236. He has done

  1237. for you.

  1238. Now, a

  1239. reason for

  1240. this apathy

  1241. and lack

  1242. of zeal

  1243. could be

  1244. the result

  1245. of earthly

  1246. mindedness.

  1247. So now, we

  1248. are looking at

  1249. this a little

  1250. backwards, but

  1251. our next

  1252. heading, our

  1253. second heading

  1254. for this

  1255. morning is

  1256. simply earthly

  1257. mindedness.

  1258. So if you

  1259. would look at

  1260. verse 2 of

  1261. Colossians

    Colossians 3:2

  1262. chapter 3,

  1263. verse 2 of

  1264. Colossians

    Colossians 3 chapter mention

  1265. chapter 3,

  1266. notice our

  1267. second heading,

  1268. earthly

  1269. mindedness.

  1270. Set your

  1271. minds on

  1272. things that

  1273. are above,

  1274. not on

  1275. things that

  1276. are on

  1277. earth.

  1278. Now, turn

  1279. back to

  1280. Philippians

    Philippians 3 chapter mention

  1281. chapter 3

  1282. with me for

  1283. a moment.

  1284. And look

  1285. at verses

  1286. 17 through

  1287. 19.

  1288. And Nathan

  1289. just read

  1290. this this

  1291. morning, so

  1292. good to hear

  1293. it again.

  1294. Paul writes,

  1295. beginning in

  1296. verse 17,

  1297. Brothers,

  1298. join in

  1299. imitating

  1300. me, and

  1301. keep your

  1302. eyes on

  1303. those who

  1304. walk according

  1305. to the

  1306. example you

  1307. have in

  1308. us.

  1309. For many

  1310. of whom I

  1311. have often

  1312. told you and

  1313. now tell you

  1314. with tears

  1315. walk as

  1316. enemies of

  1317. the cross

  1318. of Christ.

  1319. Their end

  1320. is destruction,

  1321. their God

  1322. is their

  1323. belly, and

  1324. they glory

  1325. in their

  1326. shame with

  1327. minds set

  1328. on earthly

  1329. things.

  1330. So what

  1331. is earthly

  1332. mindedness?

  1333. I have

  1334. defined it

  1335. as when

  1336. the actions

  1337. of the

  1338. will or

  1339. the affections

  1340. of the

  1341. soul are

  1342. anchored to

  1343. and driven

  1344. by the

  1345. things of

  1346. this world.

  1347. And by

  1348. things of

  1349. this world,

  1350. I mean

  1351. anything that

  1352. is of this

  1353. world,

  1354. material or

  1355. not.

  1356. It could

  1357. be pleasures,

  1358. it could

  1359. be comforts

  1360. or things

  1361. derived from

  1362. them,

  1363. honor,

  1364. power,

  1365. pride.

  1366. Now it is

  1367. important to

  1368. understand that

  1369. it is not

  1370. inherently sinful

  1371. to enjoy or

  1372. make use of

  1373. earthly things,

  1374. or even have

  1375. an abundance of

  1376. earthly things.

  1377. even God

  1378. himself knows

  1379. that we have

  1380. need of

  1381. things and

  1382. he provides

  1383. them for

  1384. us.

  1385. Now I

  1386. don't have

  1387. much time,

  1388. so just

  1389. quickly I'm

  1390. going to

  1391. give you

  1392. some

  1393. characteristics

  1394. of

  1395. earthly

  1396. mindedness

  1397. and we

  1398. will move

  1399. on.

  1400. So first,

  1401. you are

  1402. earthly minded

  1403. if you look

  1404. at earthly

  1405. things as

  1406. the greatest

  1407. things of

  1408. all and

  1409. believe that

  1410. happiness

  1411. happiness

  1412. will be

  1413. derived

  1414. from the

  1415. possession

  1416. of them.

  1417. So this

  1418. could be

  1419. anything,

  1420. relationships,

  1421. comforts,

  1422. homes,

  1423. cars,

  1424. money,

  1425. or anything

  1426. that makes

  1427. you think

  1428. to yourself,

  1429. if I just

  1430. had that

  1431. thing,

  1432. I would be

  1433. happy.

  1434. If I just

  1435. had that

  1436. thing,

  1437. this earthly

  1438. thing,

  1439. I would be

  1440. happy.

  1441. If that

  1442. is part

  1443. of the

  1444. state of

  1445. your mind,

  1446. then you

  1447. could be

  1448. earthly

  1449. minded.

  1450. Second,

  1451. you are

  1452. earthly

  1453. minded if

  1454. the sum

  1455. of or

  1456. the majority

  1457. of your

  1458. thoughts

  1459. revolve

  1460. around

  1461. earthly

  1462. things.

  1463. Proverbs

  1464. 23,

  1465. 7 says,

  1466. As a

  1467. man thinks

  1468. in his

  1469. heart,

  1470. so is

  1471. he.

  1472. And in

  1473. Matthew

  1474. 15,

  1475. 18 through

  1476. 19,

  1477. Jesus

  1478. says,

  1479. What comes

  1480. out of the

  1481. mouth proceeds

  1482. from the

  1483. heart,

  1484. and this

  1485. defiles a

  1486. person?

  1487. For out of

  1488. the heart

  1489. come evil

  1490. thoughts,

  1491. murder,

  1492. adultery,

  1493. sexual

  1494. immorality,

  1495. theft,

  1496. false witness,

  1497. and slander,

  1498. and all of

  1499. these things

  1500. being indulgences

  1501. of the flesh.

  1502. So in

  1503. your

  1504. innermost

  1505. thoughts,

  1506. in the

  1507. secret

  1508. chambers

  1509. of your

  1510. heart,

  1511. what is

  1512. most

  1513. sweet

  1514. to you?

  1515. Where do

  1516. you find

  1517. your happiness?

  1518. If the

  1519. things of

  1520. earth reign

  1521. in your

  1522. heart in

  1523. this manner,

  1524. then you

  1525. are earthly

  1526. minded.

  1527. Third,

  1528. you are

  1529. earthly

  1530. minded

  1531. if your

  1532. purpose,

  1533. drive,

  1534. and goal

  1535. in life

  1536. is only

  1537. the

  1538. accomplishment

  1539. of

  1540. earthly

  1541. endeavors.

  1542. There is

  1543. no concept

  1544. of doing

  1545. what you

  1546. do for

  1547. the Lord.

  1548. You only

  1549. mind those

  1550. temporal

  1551. things which

  1552. will one

  1553. day perish,

  1554. and you are

  1555. even angry

  1556. or afraid

  1557. at the

  1558. thought of

  1559. losing

  1560. any of

  1561. these

  1562. worldly

  1563. things

  1564. that your

  1565. mind is

  1566. set on.

  1567. And

  1568. fourth and

  1569. last,

  1570. for the

  1571. sake of

  1572. time,

  1573. you are

  1574. earthly

  1575. minded

  1576. if you

  1577. are

  1578. predominantly

  1579. earthly

  1580. in

  1581. spiritual

  1582. things.

  1583. Meaning

  1584. all

  1585. spiritual

  1586. or

  1587. religious

  1588. activity

  1589. that you

  1590. partake

  1591. in

  1592. is

  1593. nothing

  1594. but a

  1595. means

  1596. to

  1597. earthly

  1598. ends.

  1599. The

  1600. intentions

  1601. behind

  1602. your

  1603. actions

  1604. are

  1605. simply

  1606. horizontal

  1607. in the

  1608. confines

  1609. of the

  1610. terrestrial

  1611. horizon.

  1612. They are

  1613. not

  1614. vertical

  1615. pointed

  1616. to the

  1617. things

  1618. above.

  1619. And so

  1620. I give

  1621. you those

  1622. four things

  1623. and from

  1624. that

  1625. the

  1626. opposite

  1627. could be

  1628. said

  1629. encompasses

  1630. what it

  1631. means to

  1632. be

  1633. heavenly

  1634. minded.

  1635. And so

  1636. for our

  1637. third

  1638. heading

  1639. heaven

  1640. mindedness

  1641. please

  1642. look at

  1643. the

  1644. second

  1645. half of

  1646. verse

  1647. one

  1648. to the

  1649. first

  1650. half of

  1651. verse

  1652. two

  1653. back in

  1654. Colossians

  1655. chapter

  1656. three.

  1657. So

  1658. Colossians

  1659. chapter

  1660. three

  1661. verse

  1662. one

  1663. second

  1664. half of

  1665. verse

  1666. one

  1667. notice

  1668. our

  1669. third

  1670. heading

  1671. heaven

  1672. mindedness.

  1673. Seek

  1674. the

  1675. things

  1676. that

  1677. are

  1678. above

  1679. where

  1680. Christ

  1681. is

  1682. seated

  1683. at

  1684. the

  1685. right

  1686. hand

  1687. of

  1688. God

  1689. set

  1690. your

  1691. minds

  1692. on

  1693. things

  1694. that

  1695. are

  1696. above.

  1697. And for

  1698. the sake

  1699. of time

  1700. as I

  1701. said

  1702. you can

  1703. probably

  1704. deduce

  1705. what

  1706. heaven

  1707. mindedness

  1708. is

  1709. just

  1710. by

  1711. applying

  1712. the

  1713. opposite

  1714. of

  1715. what

  1716. it

  1717. means

  1718. to

  1719. be

  1720. earthly

  1721. minded.

  1722. But

  1723. very

  1724. quickly

  1725. let's

  1726. just

  1727. look

  1728. at

  1729. a

  1730. few

  1731. things

  1732. and

  1733. implications

  1734. of

  1735. heaven

  1736. mindedness.

  1737. First

  1738. those

  1739. who are

  1740. heaven

  1741. minded

  1742. are

  1743. those

  1744. who

  1745. live

  1746. with

  1747. an

  1748. eternal

  1749. perspective

  1750. an

  1751. eternal

  1752. perspective.

  1753. It was

  1754. Jonathan

  1755. Edwards

  1756. an

  1757. American

  1758. preacher

  1759. from the

  1760. 1700s

  1761. who is

  1762. widely

  1763. acknowledged

  1764. as one

  1765. of

  1766. America's

  1767. greatest

  1768. preachers

  1769. greatest

  1770. theologians

  1771. and greatest

  1772. intellectual

  1773. who

  1774. cried

  1775. out to

  1776. God

  1777. Lord

  1778. stamp

  1779. eternity

  1780. on

  1781. my

  1782. eyeballs.

  1783. And it

  1784. is from

  1785. a similar

  1786. disposition

  1787. that Paul

  1788. could cry

  1789. out in

  1790. Romans 9

  1791. that he

  1792. had

  1793. great

  1794. sorrow

  1795. and

  1796. unceasing

  1797. anguish

  1798. in his

  1799. heart

  1800. for lost

  1801. souls

  1802. because he

  1803. knew and

  1804. kept at

  1805. the forefront

  1806. of his

  1807. mind

  1808. the fact

  1809. that

  1810. multitudes

  1811. were on

  1812. their way

  1813. to

  1814. eternal

  1815. punishment.

  1816. And it

  1817. is from

  1818. this

  1819. disposition

  1820. of our

  1821. perspective

  1822. that love

  1823. and passion

  1824. to seek

  1825. out those

  1826. who are

  1827. lost

  1828. is birthed

  1829. from.

  1830. In 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 4:16

  1831. chapter 4

  1832. verses 16

  1833. and 18

  1834. Paul says

  1835. says,

  1836. for the

  1837. things that

  1838. are seen

  1839. are

  1840. transient

  1841. but the

  1842. things that

  1843. are unseen

  1844. are eternal.

  1845. The man

  1846. who can

  1847. say this

  1848. is heaven

  1849. minded

  1850. seeking

  1851. the things

  1852. above.

  1853. He does

  1854. what he does

  1855. for God

  1856. for the

  1857. kingdom

  1858. for souls.

  1859. So let me

  1860. ask you this

  1861. question.

  1862. What you do

  1863. where you

  1864. work

  1865. the life

  1866. decisions

  1867. that you

  1868. make

  1869. do you

  1870. make them

  1871. in light

  1872. of eternity?

  1873. Do you

  1874. make decisions

  1875. for the

  1876. service

  1877. of the

  1878. kingdom

  1879. of God?

  1880. Do you

  1881. have an

  1882. eternal

  1883. perspective?

  1884. Second,

  1885. heaven

  1886. mindedness

  1887. is pursuing

  1888. godliness.

  1889. Pursuing

  1890. godliness.

  1891. In 1 Timothy

    1 Timothy 4:7–10

  1892. chapter 4

  1893. verses 7

  1894. through 10

  1895. Paul says,

  1896. have nothing

  1897. to do

  1898. with worldly

  1899. fables

  1900. fit only

  1901. for old

  1902. women.

  1903. On the

  1904. other hand,

  1905. discipline

  1906. yourself

  1907. for the

  1908. purpose of

  1909. godliness.

  1910. For godliness

  1911. or for

  1912. bodily

  1913. discipline

  1914. is only

  1915. of little

  1916. profit,

  1917. but godliness

  1918. is profitable

  1919. for all

  1920. things since

  1921. it holds

  1922. promise for

  1923. the present

  1924. life and

  1925. also for

  1926. the life

  1927. to come.

  1928. It is a

  1929. trustworthy

  1930. statement

  1931. deserving

  1932. full acceptance

  1933. for it is

  1934. for this

  1935. we labor

  1936. and strive

  1937. because we

  1938. have fixed

  1939. our hope

  1940. on the

  1941. living God.

  1942. It does

  1943. take a

  1944. certain level

  1945. of discipline

  1946. and sometimes

  1947. hard work

  1948. to be godly,

  1949. to live

  1950. in righteousness.

  1951. But the

  1952. heaven-minded

  1953. Christian

  1954. learns that

  1955. alongside of

  1956. this discipline

  1957. there is a

  1958. fountain,

  1959. a fountain

  1960. of joy

  1961. and sweetness

  1962. unspeakable.

  1963. And it is

  1964. this Christian

  1965. who is

  1966. heaven-minded

  1967. that can

  1968. learn,

  1969. as 1 Timothy

  1970. 6.6

  1971. says,

  1972. that godliness

  1973. with contentment

  1974. is great

  1975. gain.

  1976. it is

  1977. for this

  1978. reason that

  1979. the apostle

  1980. can say

  1981. in Philippians

  1982. 4.11

  1983. I have

  1984. learned

  1985. in whatever

  1986. situation

  1987. I am

  1988. to be

  1989. content.

  1990. So this

  1991. leads us

  1992. to our

  1993. fourth and

  1994. final heading,

  1995. the reward

  1996. of things

  1997. above.

  1998. The reward

  1999. of the

  2000. things

  2001. above.

  2002. Starting in

  2003. verse 4,

  2004. when Christ,

  2005. who is your

  2006. life,

  2007. appears,

  2008. then you

  2009. also will

  2010. appear with

  2011. him in

  2012. glory.

  2013. Now what are

  2014. the things

  2015. above?

  2016. What is it

  2017. to seek

  2018. those things?

  2019. things?

  2020. It is

  2021. simply

  2022. this,

  2023. Christ.

  2024. It is

  2025. simply

  2026. Christ.

  2027. It is

  2028. to seek

  2029. him.

  2030. It is

  2031. to cling

  2032. to the

  2033. promises

  2034. that he

  2035. has given

  2036. us,

  2037. that we

  2038. will one

  2039. day appear

  2040. with him

  2041. in glory,

  2042. that one

  2043. day every

  2044. knee shall

  2045. bow,

  2046. and every

  2047. tongue

  2048. confess that

  2049. Jesus Christ

  2050. is Lord

  2051. to the glory

  2052. of the

  2053. Father.

  2054. Paul writes

  2055. in Philippians

  2056. 3.20-21,

  2057. and actually

  2058. I think this

  2059. is what

  2060. Nathan read,

  2061. not in the

  2062. last text,

  2063. but Paul

  2064. writes,

  2065. for our

  2066. citizenship

  2067. is in

  2068. heaven,

  2069. from which

  2070. also we

  2071. eagerly

  2072. await for

  2073. a Savior,

  2074. the Lord

  2075. Jesus Christ,

  2076. who will

  2077. transform the

  2078. body of

  2079. our humble

  2080. state into

  2081. conformity with

  2082. the body of

  2083. his glory,

  2084. by the

  2085. exertion of

  2086. the power

  2087. that he

  2088. has,

  2089. even to

  2090. subject all

  2091. things to

  2092. himself.

  2093. Oh,

  2094. that our

  2095. hearts would

  2096. learn what

  2097. our mouths

  2098. proclaim when

  2099. we sing

  2100. songs that

  2101. have lyrics

  2102. such as,

  2103. nothing in

  2104. my hands

  2105. I bring,

  2106. simply to

  2107. the cross

  2108. I cling.

  2109. Seek

  2110. him,

  2111. get to

  2112. know

  2113. him,

  2114. cling to

  2115. him,

  2116. and live

  2117. the rest of

  2118. your life

  2119. in that

  2120. pursuit.

  2121. That we

  2122. could all

  2123. one day

  2124. point,

  2125. be able to

  2126. say,

  2127. alongside of

  2128. Paul,

  2129. what he says

  2130. in Philippians,

  2131. I count

  2132. everything as

  2133. rubbish

  2134. compared to

  2135. the surpassing

  2136. worth of

  2137. knowing Christ

  2138. Jesus,

  2139. my Lord.

  2140. Have you

  2141. come to

  2142. understand a

  2143. portion of

  2144. what it means

  2145. when Paul

  2146. says to

  2147. live is

  2148. Christ,

  2149. to die

  2150. is gain?

  2151. you know,

  2152. when I

  2153. first

  2154. became a

  2155. Christian as

  2156. a young

  2157. believer,

  2158. one of my

  2159. friends at

  2160. the police

  2161. department,

  2162. one of the

  2163. few Christians

  2164. who worked

  2165. at this

  2166. police

  2167. department,

  2168. a very

  2169. mature

  2170. believer,

  2171. would often

  2172. say things

  2173. like,

  2174. I just

  2175. wish that

  2176. Christ would

  2177. come back

  2178. today,

  2179. I wish I

  2180. would die

  2181. right now,

  2182. like I'm

  2183. done with

  2184. this,

  2185. and I

  2186. was just

  2187. like,

  2188. what?

  2189. Like,

  2190. this makes

  2191. no sense,

  2192. why?

  2193. Why?

  2194. You know,

  2195. it's like,

  2196. why?

  2197. Don't you

  2198. want to

  2199. live?

  2200. Do you

  2201. not enjoy

  2202. life?

  2203. Why would

  2204. you want

  2205. to die?

  2206. It made

  2207. no sense

  2208. to me.

  2209. As I

  2210. have

  2211. matured

  2212. in my

  2213. walk

  2214. with

  2215. Christ,

  2216. now it

  2217. makes

  2218. perfect

  2219. sense.

  2220. It

  2221. makes

  2222. clear

  2223. sense.

  2224. To

  2225. live is

  2226. Christ,

  2227. to die

  2228. is gain.

  2229. I

  2230. long for

  2231. that day

  2232. and I

  2233. have now

  2234. since then

  2235. had moments

  2236. where I

  2237. just

  2238. have this

  2239. overwhelming

  2240. sense and

  2241. I pray that

  2242. Christ would

  2243. just come

  2244. back right

  2245. now because

  2246. I'm tired

  2247. of this,

  2248. because I

  2249. do not

  2250. belong to

  2251. this world.

  2252. I am not

  2253. of this

  2254. world.

  2255. Do you

  2256. have this

  2257. in your

  2258. life?

  2259. Do you

  2260. have this?

  2261. Do you

  2262. long for

  2263. his return,

  2264. for him to

  2265. be glorified?

  2266. God?

  2267. Is this

  2268. true of

  2269. your

  2270. heart?

  2271. In

  2272. conclusion,

  2273. earthly

  2274. mindedness

  2275. is

  2276. idolatry.

  2277. James 4.4

  2278. says that

  2279. friendship with

  2280. the world

  2281. is adultery

  2282. and enmity

  2283. against God.

  2284. The

  2285. apostle Paul

  2286. says that

  2287. it leads

  2288. men to

  2289. fall into

  2290. temptation

  2291. and a

  2292. snare.

  2293. Ezekiel

  2294. 33.31

  2295. describes it

  2296. as

  2297. covetousness.

  2298. My friends,

  2299. nothing is

  2300. more contrary

  2301. to the

  2302. work of

  2303. grace in

  2304. a believer

  2305. than

  2306. earthly

  2307. mindedness.

  2308. John Calvin,

  2309. a pastor and

  2310. theologian from

  2311. the 1500s,

  2312. once said,

  2313. and I

  2314. quote,

  2315. the whole

  2316. soul

  2317. ensnared

  2318. by the

  2319. allurement

  2320. of the

  2321. flesh,

  2322. seek its

  2323. happiness

  2324. on the

  2325. earth.

  2326. To meet

  2327. this

  2328. disease,

  2329. the Lord

  2330. makes His

  2331. people

  2332. sensible

  2333. to the

  2334. vanity

  2335. of the

  2336. present

  2337. life

  2338. by

  2339. constant

  2340. proof

  2341. of its

  2342. miseries.

  2343. There is

  2344. no medium

  2345. between the

  2346. two things.

  2347. The earth

  2348. must either

  2349. be worthless

  2350. in our

  2351. estimation

  2352. or keep

  2353. us

  2354. enslaved

  2355. by an

  2356. intemperate

  2357. love of

  2358. it.

  2359. Close quote.

  2360. The Lord

  2361. Jesus Christ

  2362. warns us

  2363. that one

  2364. cannot serve

  2365. two

  2366. masters.

  2367. And

  2368. likewise,

  2369. a man

  2370. cannot both

  2371. look up to

  2372. heaven

  2373. while he's

  2374. looking down

  2375. on earth.

  2376. choose this

  2377. day whom

  2378. you will

  2379. serve

  2380. in the

  2381. direction

  2382. that you

  2383. will fix

  2384. your eyes

  2385. upon.

  2386. Let us

  2387. pray.

  2388. let us

  2389. let us

  2390. let us
